Kim Kardashian is in trouble again for wearing fur

$

Kim Kardashian’s love of fashion has no boundaries. If it looks good, she’ll wear it regardless of what other people might think. It’s a strategy that’s created an unstoppable brand for her, but it’s also gotten her in some hot water, especially when she wears fur. Today, the reality star was back in trouble, this time with Sia for being a huge fan of fur coats.

Sia tweets Kim Kardashian

Sia tweets Kim Kardashian

The singer recently tweeted Kardashian asking if she’d reconsider her wardrobe. Her tweet read, “Hey @KimKardashian I think you’re lovely. Would you consider going fur free? This is what animals go through for it.” Sia then included a link to a very graphic YouTube video that exposed the fur industry.

Soon after Sia’s tweet went out, PETA found out and thanked her for using her voice for good. They said, “Amazing. Thank you for using your voice, as always, for the animals skinned alive for fur coats. We [love] you.”

PETA has been known to hate on Kardashian for her fur fashion. Although they denied being directly involved, back in 2012 they did show their support for someone who flour-bombed Kardashian on the red carpet because she was wearing a fur coat.

More: Kim Kardashian gets under PETA's skin

The hate clearly hasn’t changed Kardashian’s mind about what she should wear. She even snapped a selfie in front of an entire coat rack full of fur coats earlier this week, which is what reportedly prompted Sia to send her tweet in the first place.

Regardless of which side you fall on, you have to respect the unaggressive way in which Sia approached Kardashian. Issues like this tend to get heated fast, particularly when two celebrity egos are involved, but Sia went the opposite route. She stayed calm, led with a compliment and didn’t demand any answers from Kardashian and just simply asked that she reconsider. Even if you aren’t a fan of her music, you have to respect her as a person.

Kardashian hasn’t given any official response, but my guess is she’s going to continue to wear her fur. The best we can hope for from her is fake fur coats.

Royal Pains' Evan taking a stand against Eddie has been a long time coming

For eight seasons now, Evan has grown from a goofball to quite the mature man. The same can be said for Wednesday's episode, where Evan took a major stand against his father, after Eddie finally returned to the Hamptons.

More: Royal Pains' final season: Will Hank walk away from HankMed for good?

It's been a long time coming. For years now, Evan has been the one defending his father, whereas Hank is usually the one in disagreement. Well, the most recent episode just proved that Evan and Hank have definitely swapped roles when it comes to their dad.

At the beginning of the season, Eddie disappeared without word or reason, but Hank finally figured out that his father underwent heart surgery without anyone's knowledge. Leave it to Hank to hire a private investigator to decipher exactly what Eddie has been up to. As he told Evan, he felt like Eddie going MIA this time around was different than all those other times. He was kind of right, but that still doesn't make it OK and that is exactly how Evan feels.

Evan made it very clear that right now he doesn't want to see or speak to his dad. Of course, that didn't go as planned, because the two eventually came face to face. Once again, Eddie pulled an Eddie by apologizing for leaving and promising to never do it again. How many times have the Lawson boys heard that before?

More: Royal Pains canceled: 8 hopes for Hank, Evan and Divya before the show ends

Unlike Hank, who is not being hard on Eddie at all, Evan put his foot down. Not only did he tell Eddie that he and Paige have a lot going on with trying to start a family, but he said that his first priority as a parent will be to protect his family from Eddie. To clarify, Evan said he won't cut Eddie out completely and will even attend his upcoming wedding to Ms. Newberg (yes, the nuptials are back on), but he will make sure Eddie won't ever hurt his family like he's hurt Evan and Hank repeatedly.

It sounds harsh, but can you blame him? For years, Eddie has been pulling the same stunts and has yet to learn from his mistakes. Maybe this time around he'll will finally change his ways.

As much as I love when Eddie, Evan and Hank are getting along, it's refreshing to see Evan defending himself and his family. He may be considered the comic of the series, but Evan has a heart, a mind and feelings, too. He knows what he wants and what is best for himself and those he loves. When it comes to the latter, there's nothing Evan won't do, even if it's telling off his father.

I'm sure by the time Royal Pains comes to an end, all will be well between the Lawson men, but for right now, things are definitely rocky.

Royal Pains airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA.

NYC will make tampons available in schools for the low, low cost of free

On Tuesday, the NYC city council unanimously voted to provide free pads for women in schools, jails and shelters.

More: TV star didn't expect this letter from her doctor after a hysterectomy

"This package is remarkable," New York City councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland told a crowd after the vote. "It is the only one of its kind, and it says periods are powerful. Menstrual hygiene products are as necessary as toilet paper — and no one is freaking out about toilet paper."

The reason is simple: Sanitary products are costly, especially for low-income women, and often they have to choose between buying these essentials or buying food.

"Some women are living paycheck to paycheck," Jennifer Weiss-Wolf, vice president at NYU School of Law, told the Huffington Post. "And when you can’t buy tampons in bulk at Costco, or you can’t carry around a huge amount of them, say, if you’re homeless — you end up paying more."

More: Amazing teen boys are working to provide free tampons to girls at school

Even worse, some students opt to stay home during their periods, putting their educations at risk.

"I was the director of an after-school program in Queens, New York, and I came to learn that young girls would skip out and go home because they were on their periods. Sometimes it was due to the discomfort, but other times they’d run out of pads and were too embarrassed to ask a teacher or nurse," Ferreras-Copeland told Yahoo Health in 2015. "They preferred to lose learning time in order to save face."

This shouldn't happen in the U.S. — and it shouldn't happen anywhere.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to sign it into law within a month. Let's hope other cities take the lead and offer the same to women in their cities. Oh, and while we're at it, let's eliminate the "pink tax," too.

After watching Bethenny Frankel’s health scare, I vowed to take better care of myself

I have to admit, when Bethenny Frankel started talking about her bleeding on last week’s The Real Housewives of New York episode, I was sure she was playing it up for the cameras. She’s known to be a bit dramatic, so I thought this was just another thing she was blowing out of proportion that she would blow off later. But when she revealed how bad it actually was on tonight's episode, I was forced to reevaluate my own health priorities.

More: Bethenny Frankel's excuse for being too thin is questionable (VIDEO)

Frankel’s mystery bleeding was so severe that it left her with three options, one of which was a hysterectomy. There’s no doubt that she took it seriously, but she’s a businesswoman who’s running a huge corporation. Chances are good that Frankel put off going to the doctor for much longer than she should have. Not because she didn’t know better, but because she had different priorities.

When she finally got the diagnosis and the treatment options, it was a gigantic wake-up call. For her and for me.

More: Bethenny Frankel's got a new boyfriend and this one could really stick

Like Frankel, I have a tendency to put everything but myself first. Whether it’s family, friends, household chores or work, there are at least a hundred things on my to-do list before I take care of my health. I honestly can’t remember the last time I had a physical. But by doing everything for everyone else, Frankel (and every woman like her) is actually doing a disservice to them. It means Skinnygirl, her daughter and the other Housewives will never get the best of her because she’s run down and exhausted.

The problem is I don’t think any of us realizes we’re performing at less than our potential. We’ve all gotten so used to being constantly busy and overcommitting to things that we wouldn’t even know how to describe fully rested or healthy if someone asked us.

More: Bethenny Frankel's not giving up without a fight on latest divorce proceedings

Hopefully going through this health scare is enough to force Frankel to prioritize herself above everything else, because it definitely did that for me.

What we know about Blac Chyna & Rob Kardashian's wedding so far

Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna are getting closer and closer to their big day. Their whirlwind romance may have caught everyone off-guard, including his entire family, but that hasn’t stopped them from sticking to their plan to get married this summer. If the rumors are true, we’re probably going to see the entire thing unfold on TV, but in the meantime, here is what we know so far about the wedding event of the summer.

More: The Kardashians are being really unfair about Rob & Blac Chyna's engagement

Kardashian and Chyna have decided to get married before she gives birth to their first child. Insiders have confirmed that the nuptials are planned for July, but they’re staying tight-lipped about whether it will be at the beginning of July or toward the end. My guess is it will be early July so the bride can be as comfortable as possible in her wedding dress, but unfortunately, I’m not a Kardashian insider yet.

As for the wedding party, it’s been rumored that Kylie Jenner, Kardashian’s sister, will be a bridesmaid. He and Jenner have been exceptionally close throughout the years, at least until they started relationships with exes. But now that Jenner and Tyga have parted ways, she and Chyna have become fast friends, making it almost a given that Jenner will be in the wedding.

More: Blac Chyna proves her butt is good for Rob Kardashian's business, too

Insiders have also let it slip that the wedding will take place “someplace warm,” but with temperatures in Los Angeles reaching 100 degrees just last week, that could be their own backyard.

However the details pan out, we’ll be able to catch every bit of drama on TV. Ever the businesswoman, Kardashian’s mom, Kris Jenner, has convinced the couple to sell their ceremony, and probably the weeks leading up to it, as a separate show, so the whole thing will be on E! as fast as the editors can get through the footage.

More: Kim Kardashian's Snapchat videos reveal how she feels about Rob Kardashian

The most important detail, though, is that Kardashian is the happiest and most confident he’s been in years. In my opinion, seeing him in love and happy will be the most heartwarming part of the entire ceremony.

Another Housewife is tragically diagnosed with Lyme disease

Amber Marchese, a former cast member of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, announced today that she has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. The 38-year-old told ET that she was officially diagnosed last week after noticing some symptoms for a couple of weeks. This makes her the second member of the Housewives franchise to have the disease.

More: Lyme disease symptoms that are misdiagnosed as the flu

Marchese said, "About two weeks ago, I had flu-like symptoms which included a low grade fever, headache, aches, chills, joint pain and awful neck pain. I posted my condition on social media and a friend suggested I get tested for Lyme disease. She shared with me her struggles with Lyme disease and we shared many of the same symptoms."

As if that weren’t bad enough, Marchese is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. But thanks to that treatment, she was able to catch the disease early, making it possible for her to monitor the symptoms and not require treatment just yet.

More: Avril Lavigne gives emotional update to her battle with Lyme disease (VIDEO)

Being able to catch the disease before it reached advanced stages, along with the lucky recommendation from Twitter, has helped Marchese maintain a positive outlook on her health. She swears by the power of positivity to aid her recovery.

She explained, "If I thought about the joint pain, then the pain increased. When I ignored it, got my butt to the gym, it went away. I believe in the power of the mind. You are sick if you want to be sick, you are well if you want to be well. That is just the way I choose to live my life."

No doubt bringing in Big Brother vets means the drama will start early

Much to my dismay, the premiere of Big Brother tonight stayed relatively quiet. Julie Chen did throw three major twists at the newest cast at the Big Brother house, but they managed to keep their cool about everything. I know, I know — it’s way early and there’s plenty of backstabbing to come, but with so many curve balls, I was expecting so much more from the first episode.

More: Julie Chen tears up as she speaks about one Big Brother star

The biggest reason I thought the drama would start immediately is they brought in four veterans from past seasons to shake things up in the house. Anytime past cast members join any show, they waste no time asserting their dominance and stirring the pot to make sure everyone knows they came to play. But when the four vets entered the house, they managed to stay well below the radar.

If anything, it was the newbies who caused the most drama. Three cast members in particular — Jozea, Zakiya and Paul — formed an alliance right away, promising to watch out for each other and stab everyone else in the back, no matter what. So at least I can count on them for drama.

More: Big Brother 17 pushes diversity boundaries more than any other show on TV

As a brand new viewer of the show, I have to admit that this wasn’t what I was expecting from Big Brother. It wasn’t until the last half hour of the show that anything relatively exciting happened. The competitions seemed to bring out the ugliest sides of everyone’s personality, but even that was tame compared to other reality show competitions. I know that it’s early, but so far, I’m going to need more from the cast members if they want to convert me into a new fan.

One thing is for sure, between now and tomorrow’s episode, I will be tweeting Paul to try to get some answers as to why he’s wearing glitter in his beard.

The Bachelorette offers fairy-tale romances — not real-life partnerships

Getting to know someone for who they are is JoJo's fear in the beginning of a recent episode of The Bachelorette, in part because she feels like she did not get to know Chad well enough. The men comment that she is serious about finding love since she discovered Chad's true colors and sent him home.

It's not really JoJo's fault that it is difficult to really get to know these men. She continues to get to know these men in individual dates and group dates set up by producers of the show and has very little time to develop a relationship that is based on anything other than manufactured entertainment.

More: The Bachelorette needs to learn the difference between chemistry and attraction

I believe that the façade of exciting dates, fancy dresses and suits can be misleading to what true romance is.Fancy meals and gorgeous hotels are staples of the show, which make for great scenery. The group goes to South America and makes a stop in Uruguay, and they're thrilled at the prospect of traveling to this far away destination. JoJo and Jordan go on a yacht in Uruguay and have a romantic dinner over candlelight outside with gorgeous clothes and beautiful sites. While this is great to watch, it does not necessarily mean she is getting to know him well enough to know if a relationship would last or even develop. In a real pursuit of love and getting to know someone, it would involve much more complex situations that arise organically as two people form a relationship and might experience real trials and tribulations. True romance has nothing to do with anything external. Real romance is all about the emotional connection and communication between two people.

More: Hasty Tinder decisions could be ruining your chance at love

The Bachelorette misses key experiences that would allow for contestants to actually get to know each other. It makes me wonder, what would happen if they never left the city? What if dinner dates had to occur in boring places like kitchens and living rooms, without a private chef? Maybe they could go to a movie theater or a local coffee shop. What if dessert was at a yogurt store in your neighborhood? What if each contestant had to keep their jobs and work all week and then go out on dates on weekends and not have fancy clothes or flowing champagne at their fingertips? What if they had to discuss finances and bills? Now that would make an interesting show, and it would be lot more real. Doing basic things can create love just as fancy things can. It is the person, not the scenery, that will make love last a lifetime.

These fairy-tale scenarios do not allow a contestant to see what happens when her partner is under stress or worried about finances. These fancy trips and competitive sports dates do not teach anyone about trust or companionship. Winning a soccer game does not mean you are good at relationships. While it is great TV, in my view, it does not make for getting to know someone well enough to get married.

Don't worry if your first dates are occurring at the coffee shop down the street from your home. Love can blossom here just as likely as a fabulous beach in some exotic country, and it might last longer.

The sex hack that basically saved my marriage

$

Sex is really pretty fantastic no matter what time of the day you do it. Morning sex is sensual and slow, a great way to ease into the day with a smile on your face. Night sex is intimate and cozy with a huge bonus: falling asleep in each other's arms. But for me, there is, and always will be, one time of day that is superior to all others. The afternoon. Sky rockets in flight and all that. Truly, every day at 2 PM I am in the mood without fail.

Unfortunately, it is also the least convenient time for sex. After all, my husband is at work five days a week at that time. On the weekends, we can sometimes hit that timing (especially when our toddler naps), but with three kids, it's not always the best time. Meanwhile, I am always up and running (literally) at 5 a.m. making morning sex impossible. And by 9 p.m. I am too exhausted to see straight. There is no way sex is happening.

More: I have the world's most boring relationship and I'm grateful for it every day

My husband is a morning sex person. He likes to get it done and start the day that way. He's not too tired, he's not too distracted. Meanwhile, for me, morning sex has always been difficult. I like to work out in the morning and morning sex feels like it takes away from that. I am sapped of mojo and not in the mood for a 5 miler. For me, it has always been 2 p.m. or bust. For obvious reasons, this proves frustrating to my husband. We tend to text in the afternoon and sometimes talk on the phone. But it is hard for us to actually be in person at that time. And since I am rarely in the mood any other time, he's traditionally been pretty frustrated. I can't help myself. It's hormonal. On the other hand, I knew I had to meet him halfway to get him to meet me half way. So I started sucking it up a little.

I'd drink coffee around 4 p.m. to get the engine going. I'd stay in bed a little longer on a Saturday and I asked him to do the same. On the weekends, we try to put the baby down earlier. Any time he can work from home, I like for him to take his lunch break in bed. It works.

I still prefer afternoon sex and I still get that 2 p.m. itch every day like clockwork. But between me trying a little for him and him trying a little for me, we have found a good balance that keeps us both satisfied. And my husband has discovered the joys of afternoon sex. If there is any better way to spend a warm afternoon with the windows open and follow it up with a nap, I can't imagine what it might be.

Johnny Depp hides on private island after Amber Heard granted restraining order

Johnny Depp is in hiding on his private island in the Bahamas as his contentious divorce from Amber Heard plays out. While he's avoiding Los Angeles, he's bringing his friends and family to him. (Not a bad deal — a vacation in the Bahamas. The worst part, honestly, would probably be hanging out with a moody Johnny Depp.) An insider spoke to People about Depp's strategy for lying low.

More: If Amber Heard won't publicly speak out about Johnny Depp, her friend will

"He has no plans to return to LA," said the source. "He misses nothing about LA but his kids, and they are visiting him in the Bahamas." Now that school has concluded, his daughter Lily-Rose Depp has scheduled a visit, and his son Jack is allegedly expected to arrive shortly with his mother Vanessa Paradis, who has remained close to Depp.

"Having his kids around is always great for him. He has really missed his kids," says the source.

More: Amber Heard is suing the man who accused her of blackmailing Johnny Depp

Aside from having family close, friends are also "flying back and forth for visits" to the island. One reason he may be staying far away from Los Angeles? Heard has been granted a temporary restraining order against him. Instead of tempting fate, he can simply hide out on what's surely a very comfortable private island way from those pesky photographers. But not to worry — we'll see him back stateside soon for a tour with his band the Hollywood Vampires.

11 clitoris facts you'll think about the next time you have sex

$
0
0

I haven't even met you, but I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that your clitoris is amazing because all clitorises (clitorii, as I like to call them) are amazing. It's that mysterious body part that some sex partners just can't seem to figure out, but when they finally do it's well worth all the homework.

I spoke with relationship coach and sex educator Dawn Serra to understand the ins and outs of the clitoral pleasure bomb, and the facts she shared might just surprise you. At worst, you get to spend five minutes reading about your clitoris. How can you lose?

1. It gets an erection

Even though the clitoris is tucked away from view, it grows erect when a woman is aroused. "It's made of erectile tissue, and it engorges with blood like a penis," said Serra.

2. It's a lot larger than you think

Don't let the external nub of the clitoris fool you — it's actually much larger and more complicated than you'd think. "Most people don't realize that the clitoris is actually about the same size as penis," she said. It's about the size of a medium zucchini.

3. It's normal for it to look different

There's no such thing as a "normal" clitoris, because all women are shaped differently. Serra explained that some are large, small, protruding or hidden, but they all do the same job. However, it has been said that the distance from vagina to clitoris can impact your ability to orgasm (see number seven).

More: 6 Extremely common sex problems it's OK to finally talk about

4. It has one near-universal truth

"Dry fingers and [sex] toys on a clitoris don't usually feel good," said Serra. If you and your partner want a happy clitoris and there isn't enough natural fluid to make a wet environment, always use lube.

5. It's Greek

Have you ever wondered where the word "clitoris" came from? According to Serra, the root of the word is the Greek word for "key." As in, the key to a woman's orgasm.

6. It has a better orgasm than a penis does (take that, men)

"Both the penis and clitoris are full of incredibly sensitive nerve endings," said Serra. "However, the nerve endings in the penis are spread out over a much larger area while most of the nerve endings are concentrated in a more intense area in the clitoris." The concentration of nerve endings can spell out stronger sensations than even the penis can muster.

7. Its distance from the vaginal opening has everything to do with your orgasm

Not size, but distance. Serra explained that the size and placement of your clitoris can affect sexual pleasure. "The distance between your vaginal opening and the size of your clitoris can greatly impact pleasure during penis-in-vagina intercourse," she said. For those whose clitoris is further away from the vaginal opening, you may need to experiment with toys or other stimulation for a fabulous orgasm.

More: 10 erogenous zones you didn't know you had

8. Penetration isn't always its favorite game

Speaking of penetration, penis-in-vagina sex isn't usually the best for clitoral stimulation. "Most women can't orgasm from vaginal penetration alone, because the penis may miss the clitoris entirely," said Serra.

9. It's shaped like a four-legged animal, seriously

"Your clitoris is a massive network of swollen, tingly pleasure," said Serra. She explained that some sex educators call the clitoris a four-legged animal, because that's exactly what the network of clitoral structures look like within your pelvic floor.

10. You're not broken if it takes a while

Don't let anyone tell you that your orgasm should happen quickly — your clitoris is a slow-moving machine. "Remember that it takes, on average, 20-25 minutes of stimulation and foreplay before a woman is fully aroused," Serra said. Some women find that they even need 45 minutes of clitoral stimulation before they're aroused for intercourse.

More: The truth about low sex drive (no, you're not broken)

11. Its arousal patterns change, like the weather

Unlike men, who have fairly consistent arousal patterns, clitoral arousal changes according to the time of the month, stress levels and even hydration and nutrition levels. "The way you experience pleasure and arousal can change," she concluded. "Communicate, and have a sense of adventure about it all."

Michael Jackson's family defends him against 'new' child porn charges

A tabloid has published what they call never-before-seen, damning evidence found at Michael Jackson's house before his child molestation trial, but there are a couple of problems with that claim.

A report on Radar Online claims that police found a treasure trove of child pornography when they searched Jackson's Neverland Ranch back in 2003, including "disgusting and downright shocking images of child torture, adult and child nudity, female bondage and sadomasochism," according to their source.

More: How Paris Jackson honors her deceased father is none of your business

"In a book Jackson called Room to Play, there is a deeply disturbing photo of a [murdered child beauty queen] JonBenét Ramsey look-alike with a noose around her neck," revealed the insider. "There were also photos and videos featuring sadomasochistic sex, bondage..."

Here are the issues with Radar's so-called "exclusive": One, the material in question has been in the public domain and all over the internet for years. Two, Room To Play is actually an art book released by photographer Simen Johan in 2002 and is still readily available on Amazon for as little as $20. The photos are controversial, for sure, but hardly pornography — no sexual acts are depicted. Three, police confirmed that your average, run-of-the-mill porn was found in Jackson's possession — specifically some issues of Playboy and Penthouse, the same as many men have.

"There were all kinds of conventional porn magazines," former Santa Barbara Senior Assistant District Attorney Ron Zonen told People. "Things like Playboy, Penthouse. There was one called Barely Legal. It was a publication that featured young women presumably over the age of 18 but selected because they look much younger.

"There were photos of nude children but they weren't sexually graphic," he said. "They weren't children engaged in sexual activity and there was no child pornography. There were no videos involving children. There were videos that were seized but they were conventional adult sexually graphic material. No children involved."

More: Joe Jackson hospitalized and possibly on his deathbed

Jackson's family and estate are livid that the story has resurfaced, just days before the anniversary of his death.

"Seven years ago this coming Saturday, the world lost an amazing artist and humanitarian devoted to helping children in need in all corners of the world. Michael Jackson's fans, including the executors of his estate, prefer to remember the wonderful gifts Michael left behind instead of having to once again see his good name dragged through the mud by tabloid trash," the estate said in a statement.

"Everything in these reports, including what the county of Santa Barbara calls 'content that appears to be obtained off the internet or through unknown sources' is false, no doubt timed to the anniversary of Michael's passing. Those who continue to shamelessly exploit Michael via sleazy internet 'click bait' ignore that he was acquitted by a jury in 2005 on every one of the 14 salacious charges brought against him in a failed witch-hunt. Michael remains just as innocent of these smears in death as he was in life even though he isn't here to defend himself. Enough is enough."

And both his daughter Paris and brother Jermaine chimed in with their own thoughts on the rehashed story.

Bloody hell, this neurological disorder could make you talk like a Londoner

As far as accents go, you definitely can't mistake a Texan drawl for a British accent. Which made one woman's particular health issue something of a talking point in her hometown of Rosenberg.

More: You can actually test how fast you're aging, and it's pretty fascinating

After mom-of-three Lisa Alamia had jaw surgery to correct her underbite, she came round from the anesthesia with one very unexpected side effect: a British accent. (FYI, there are around 56 main "accent types" in the U.K., but we'll assume "British" in this case means London.)

Initially, her family thought Alamia was joking, but then she got an official diagnosis of foreign accent syndrome, an extremely rare neurological disorder that usually results from a stroke, but can also develop from head trauma, migraines or developmental problems. In other cases, no clear cause can be identified.

When Alamia's own accent didn't return, she spent much of her time completely silent, scared that people would judge her, or think she was faking her accent. Thanks to supportive family and friends, she is learning to live with her new voice, although she admits it still causes problems when people she speaks to don't understand what she's saying.

Foreign accent syndrome is so rare that less than 100 people have been diagnosed worldwide within the past century. As well as adopting a foreign accent, sufferers may forget words and struggle with grammar. Technically, the new "accent" — which may be any accent, but in Alamia's case happens to be that of a Londoner — is caused by combination of a change in timing, intonation, and tongue placement.

Other foreign accent syndrome cases that have been documented around the world include accent changes from Japanese to Korean, British English to French, and Spanish to Hungarian.

Our accent is something we take for granted, and it's rarely a talking point. How strange it must be to wake up with a completely different accent. Despite going through a huge number of tests, doctors have not been able to tell Alamia what caused the syndrome, and whether she might revert to her original Texan accent. Let's hope she does — but in the meantime, she should embrace her London twang. Lots of us couldn't even imitate one if we tried.

5 tips for your summer travel so the crowds don't ruin it

It is exciting to jet around the world and visit beautiful destinations, but it can also be stressful — particularly before your flight. No matter how much you travel, there's always something new to discover to make your life easier. Here are some travel tips I've learned that will help make your upcoming summer travels go off without a hitch.

More: 6 Reasons you need to visit Western Montana

1. Arrive earlier than you think you need to

We all know about those long security lines at the airport and restrictions on what we can bring on board the plane. To de-stress the process, arrive far in advance of your flight. There's nothing worse than starting a trip by feeling the pressure of potentially missing a flight. Most major hubs have excellent restaurants and upscale shopping, so minimize the chances of mishaps by arriving ahead of schedule and enjoy a meal, read a book or have a cocktail (or two) to smooth those pre-flight jitters.

2. Look online for cheaper checked bag fees

Weight and size restrictions are not just for checked baggage. Some airlines have similar restrictions for carry-on luggage and personal items, especially on International flights. Check with your airline before you arrive at the airport rather than get there and discover your carry-on or checked bags are too large or overweight and you get fined hefty fees.

If you have extra bags to check, go to your airline's website and see if purchasing online is cheaper than at the gate. Avoid the surprise of twice the price upon check-in, which can be hundreds of dollars.

3. Use packets for personal items

With weight and liquid restrictions limited to one quart-size bag filled with three-ounce containers, what's a girl to do when bringing along her cosmetic, skincare and personal items? Packets are the answer. While not everything is available in a tiny square package, many things are, including most makeup and skincare on the market. They are convenient, don't weigh much and, best of all, don't count toward your limit of carry-on liquids. Visit your cosmetic counter and ask for samples and then purchase whatever else you can in packets, reserving favorite items that only come in larger packages for the three-ounce containers.

4. Buy spinner luggage

Spinner luggage has four wheels instead of the standard two. Even if there's nothing wrong with your older luggage, lightweight luggage with four spinning wheels is an ingenious invention, especially for those of us who spend a lot of time wheeling luggage through long corridors at the airport. Gone are the days when you have to drag your luggage behind you while juggling two or three other items. These bags wheel right alongside of you without weighing you down.

5. Invest in travel gadgets

There are several items every serious traveler will find invaluable. Most of these items are small, don't weigh much and are easy to pack, so invest in a few:

  • A portable charger, so your smartphone doesn't run out of juice when it's also your camera
  • Noise-canceling headphones, for the occasional screaming child or two
  • A digital luggage scale to weigh luggage at home
  • If you want to spring for one of the newest techie gizmos, order a LugLoc. This is the first luggage locator in the world and can locate your luggage even when the airlines can't with a simple app downloaded on your iPhone or Android.

There are many other tips and tricks to save time, relieve stress and make packing a breeze when traveling. These are just a few to get you started on your summer travels.

Before you judge the leash on my kid, hear me out

I used child leashes on two of my three kids at various points during their highly mobile toddlerhood. Our kiddie leash resembled a cute, fuzzy, bear backpack. The leash handle zipped inside. I could whip it out and hook it up whenever I felt the situation called for it. Key words here, people: whenever I felt the situation called for it.

I’m pro-child leash. Actually, I’m pro-“whatever the parent thinks is the right decision to keep her child safe unless it’s illegal or harmful.” See also pro-“people minding their own bees.”

More: No, drugging my kid is not an easy way out

We leashed sparingly, in dense crowds or situations where grownup hands were occupied. I’m absolutely convinced my youngest son is still in our family because we used the fuzzy bear leash in the security line at the Atlanta airport in 2012. I was juggling my boarding pass, passport and a packed-to-the-gills diaper bag that kept slipping off my arm, in addition to trying to manage my wiggly 2-year-old.

Airports are large, fast-moving places where you can lose a child in a flash. The end of the leash was wound around my wrist twice. I could feel my son straining against his tether and I knew if I let go, he’d blast off toward whatever shiny thing piqued his interest. He was low to the ground and could have zipped through people’s legs below my line of sight and been gone in a nanosecond.

We like to judge parents who use child leashes, don’t we? We like to call them cruel, lazy. We also like to judge parents who can’t control their kids in public and we love to judge parents who lose their kids in public. The internet is always there to tell parents we’re “doing it wrong.”

Let me tell you about the time I wanted to use my child leash and didn’t. Read my story and then tell me if you still judge me. Actually, don’t tell me. I don’t care.

It was 1996 and my daughter was 4. I’m not sure how long child leashes had been around, but they were causing ripples in the pre-internet parenting communities. Same as now, the word on the street was that parents who use leashes on kids are mean or lazy. If you teach your children to mind, they won’t wander away from you. If you’re an attentive parent, that is.

I was at an amusement park that day in 1996. The leash was tucked in my backpack. I wrestled with whether I should use it. The park was crowded and my daughter bounced up and down with excitement. She tugged on my hand, begging to go in this direction, in that direction. There were costumed cartoon characters, rides and Oh look, Mommy, ICE CREAM!

More: Why the 'terrible' mom in this viral video wants you to watch her toddler's meltdown

I decided not to use the leash. I was with a large group of friends and family, maybe 20 people total. My daughter was the only small child and there were plenty of adults to help keep an eye on her. I always worried about her in public places because she was a friendly child and a wanderer. And she was fast.

I remember the time I heard “lost child at security” while shopping at Target. I looked down to make sure my child was there next to me. She wasn't.

“Mommy, you left me,” she accused me when I frantically showed up to collect her.

You left me,” I corrected her. I'd focused on some bargain shampoo and took my eyes off of her for a second, and she made her move.

The amusement park was different, I told myself. It wasn’t as if it were just the two of us. I had lots of help. No need to clip on the leash and suffer dirty looks from leash haters. Besides, 4 was getting to be too old. She’d be fine.

“Make sure you always hold hands with a grownup while we’re here.” I crouched at her eye level and spoke sternly.

“OK, Mommy.”

More: Think Disney princesses are bad for our daughters? About that ...

I don’t remember how long we’d been there when I glanced down to reassure myself that my daughter was by my side. I’d let go of her hand and I wanted to put eyes on her. She wasn’t there. Willing myself not to panic, I scanned my group to see if she was holding hands with a family member. No.

My heart started to race and the frantic “Where’s Laura?” flew from my mouth repeatedly as I spun in circles, looking high and low for a little blonde head in the crowds.

I’m sure my panic was contagious. I’m sure my family joined me in the search. I don’t remember anything except a sinking feeling and despair. Then I caught sight of a familiar blonde head about a football field’s length away from me. A grandmotherly woman who thankfully wasn’t a child snatcher or a pervert had my daughter by the hand, walking toward me.

Maybe my daughter pointed to this crazy-eyed, blubbering mess and said, “That’s my mommy.” Maybe I thanked the woman. I don’t remember much beyond crying and yelling at my daughter who told me she’d just “wanted to see the boats,” the little remote-controlled boats. You feed them coins and watch them putter around the man-made lake. She saw the boats and went for it. Because she could. Because there was no one stopping her.

We were lucky that day.

If harm had come to my child, there would be so much judgment. If I’d walked my child around on a leash at an amusement park, there would still be judgment. If this happened today, the judgment would be magnified because of the internet. Pictures of me, labeled “bad mom,” might go viral.

I have never forgotten that day; and when my younger, just-as-inquisitive son came along, I never hesitated to use that leash when I thought it was needed. I’m a fan of child leashes — and now you know why.

I’m also a fan of giving other parents the benefit of the doubt and a little grace. There’s not enough of that going around.

Michael Strahan doesn't miss Live! with Kelly and he's not afraid to say it

In the weeks since Michael Strahan's dramatic departure from Live!, Kelly Ripa has been thrust into fun (and awkward) situations with new guest host after new host. But how's Strahan doing over at Good Morning America?

More: Michael Strahan is kind of rubbing his new job in Kelly Ripa's face

According to a new interview on Chelsea Handler's new talk show Chelsea, Strahan is doing just fine. More importantly, he's convinced he made the right decision. "I really haven't missed it," he said without a hint of sugar-coating. "But I loved it. Don't get me wrong: I loved it. When you get a break, sometimes you kind of go, 'Wow, I kind of needed it.' I needed a break."

More: Kelly Ripa is so not ready to kiss and make up with Michael Strahan

The shade doesn't stop there. Strahan must know how hard Ripa has been working to replace his seat, but he told Handler: "I really haven't had a chance to watch. But I think I've been working so hard for the last seven or eight years since I retired from football, that it's been a relief." We get it, he's thrilled that he's not on Live! any more. But it seems a little rude to go on a talk show and be so public about the fact that he adores his new job and hasn't even thought about his old one, don't you think? It's like posting a bunch of new photos of your girlfriend while your ex is at home crying. Strahan, you can do better.

10 ways to keep dogs safe in the summer sun (that they'll actually enjoy)

Summertime is a fun time for dogs and their families! Going on picnics, playing in water, camping, hiking and taking beach excursions are just that much better with a furry friend along. As temperatures rise, it's important to keep your dog safe and cool. Heat stroke in pets is a real health concern, and dehydration can happen more quickly than you expect. The good news is that it's easier than you think to keep your dog happy this summer. These simple ideas will help you and your dog beat the heat.

1. Homemade ice lick

Think of this as a giant doggy popsicle. Freeze chew toys in a bucket (or Bundt pan, for a ring shape). Try blending in chicken broth or peanut butter for extra flavor. Once it's frozen solid, simply empty the container for a DIY treat your dog won't be able to resist. This is a great way to alleviate dog boredom too!

2. Kiddie pool

When you can't make it to the beach, bring the beach to your backyard. You can opt for a dog-specific pool like this one or go the classic route. Think hard plastic with a pattern of colorful fish — inexpensive and lightweight but sturdy enough for dog paws. It's also easy to rinse, clean and dry.

3. Flavored water

Having trouble getting your dog to drink enough water? Add a flavor boost. A splash of chicken broth will entice most pups to drink. Alternatively, try draining the water from a can of tuna into your dog's bowl. Just watch how fast it gets lapped up!

4. Dog sunscreen

Yes, your dog might need sunblock too. Hairless dogs are prone to sunburn, along with dogs sporting bald spots. When choosing a sunscreen for your pooch, keep it simple. Opt for unscented, mild and natural brands, such as those for children or babies. Safety tip: Avoid brands with zinc oxide, which is a common ingredient that can be toxic to dogs if eaten.

5. DIY freezer treats

Slushies, popsicles and other refreshing treats aren't just for humans! Check out these fabulous options for quick, wholesome hot-weather goodies for your dog. They couldn't be easier. Simply mix, freeze and feed. We're especially fond of these icy watermelon treats from Gone to the Snow Dogs.

6. Doggy day care

If you work all day and your dog is home alone, it's important to keep your house cool enough for your pet's comfort. If you don't have A/C or if the prospect of a giant electric bill is daunting, we recommend doggy day care. It's easy to find and book the perfect daytime companion for your dog. They'll get out to play, and you'll get peace of mind.

7. Car safety for dogs

Car accidents can be just as dangerous for our pets! Fortunately, dog seat belts exist. Unfortunately, most of them aren't very effective. The Center for Pet Safety did a big study testing various dog seat belts, and only one clear winner emerged: the Sleepypod Clickit Utility Harness. It's reasonably affordable at $65 - $85 — and well worth the peace of mind.

8. Wet food, please

This tip is so simple, it's easy to overlook. As the weather heats up, consider replacing some of your dog's dry food with a nutritious wet variety. Canned foods contain more moisture and will help keep your dog hydrated.

9. Dog cooling vest

We love this wearable option from Ruffwear, which will keep your dog cool on the go. Simply soak it, wring it out and put it on your dog. It harnesses the power of natural evaporative cooling — mimicking the way that humans sweat. Feeling DIY? You can make your own with an old pair of cargo pants!

10. Create shade

Last not but least, don't underestimate the power of shade. From the backyard to the beach, make sure your dog has a shady resting spot to beat the heat. Set up camp under a tree, encourage naps under the picnic table, string up a tarp and buy a giant beach umbrella. You can also try a pop-up canopy just for dogs, like this one from Quik Shade. Just don't let your dog retreat to the tent or the dog house on a hot day. Temperatures are actually higher in there!

It's more than little terrifying what teenage boys are using to masturbate

Having never been a boy, I had no idea about all the weird shit boys do to get off. Even though I had a big brother, I wasn’t privy to the vast array of strange self-satisfying tools and tricks teenage boys have up their sleeves. That is, until I met my husband and he told me a hilarious story about why he loved climbing the pole at school.

“At first,” he explained, “I just climbed because I liked to see how fast I could get to the top. But one day when I climbed something weird happened. It felt really good. Like, so good I would make sure to climb that pole every morning and every lunch.”

More: This teenage girl just got fired for speaking up about inequality

Even as my own sons grew, I didn’t understand just how resourceful boys could be, until I questioned my then-12-year-old about why he had a giant box of condoms in his bedroom.

His hesitation should have been my first clue.

“Well, umm,” he said. “I use them to, uh, you know...”

“To what?” I asked. I had no idea what he was trying to say.

“To masturbate!” he finally said.

“Oh. Oh, well, OK,” was all I managed to say.

A week later, while out for drinks with my girlfriends, who also had teen boys, I asked if that was normal.

“I don’t know about condoms,” my friend Tammy said, “but I found out my son Charlie was using socks.”

“Socks?” I had never heard of boys sexualizing slippers.

“Yeah, socks. Your boys don’t do that?” Tammy asked. “Well, Charlie does. I swear I won’t even touch his laundry anymore. All it took was one time grabbing a sock that was hard as a rock and I was done. It was nasty!”

Learning about socks, and laughing my ass off watching the Bridesmaids scene where a mom describes cracking her son’s comforter, made me curious about what other means boys employ to get their (pun intended) socks off.

More: Labiaplasty, vodka tampons and more scary teen "trends your kids are sick of hearing about

Naturally, I first turned to my husband and sons to learn more. I was in for a surprise with their answers.

Like machine gun fire, my eldest son listed his favorite masturbation props.

“Let’s see, there’s good old wadded-up toilet paper, towels, even shirts. Heck, I’ll use dirty laundry if it's there. Whatever is within reach, really,” he shared. As he spoke, my younger son nodded his head emphatically.

“Anything else?” I asked. I was all business. Hey, who was I to judge? As a teen, I’d had an amorous moment or two with my favorite bottle of perfume, Love’s Baby Soft, which, if anyone remembers, was totally shaped like a dildo.

“OK, don’t laugh, but one time I put my penis in the vacuum hose,” my youngest said.

“While it was on?” I asked. I’d lost my deadpan expression the moment I picture my son losing his penis in a vacuuming accident.

“Yeah, but it was on low, don’t worry,” he reassured me. “It didn’t feel that good, so I only did it once.”

You can imagine my relief.

“Oh, what about paper towel rolls?” my oldest added. “And that time I used the cantaloupe?”

Even my husband was shocked at the cantaloupe revelation. Fruit. Really? I thought that was only a thing women in prison did.

“And the trash can,” my youngest said. Was nothing sacred?

More: I have to be honest: Other parents scare me more than pedophiles

By the end of our conversation, I had the idea that my sons, and probably all teenage boys, used anything and everything at their disposal to masturbate.

With my curiosity quelled, I had to wonder if my quest for knowledge was a worthy endeavor. Honestly, I’ll probably never look at a cantaloupe the same way again, but I am grateful I had this awkward, yet illuminating, discussion with my kids.

They felt confident enough to be real, knowing full well I would write this information and share it with the world. It may seem like too much for some parents, but talks like these let me know that my sons can truly be open with me about any subject, no matter how uncomfortable. Like, penis-in-a-vacuum uncomfortable. Ouch.
