Kim Kardashian delivers her baby several weeks early

More: Whoopi Goldberg just managed to upset breastfeeding moms everywhere

Kim wasn't due for another three weeks, but her new baby boy didn't seem to care about due dates. The delivery of North West's baby brother came hours after Kim posted to Instagram that she was ready for her little guy to make his arrival:

Kim K baby

Kim K baby

The couple then made an official birth announcement, including the news that "mother and son are doing well" on Kim's website.

Although delivering a baby early can come with risks, it's good to know everything turned out OK for the West family. And considering Kim's had a rather difficult pregnancy, seeing the end come three weeks early is no doubt a relief.

More: Connie Britton reveals her biggest parenting challenge

Of course what's still under wraps is the one thing everyone wants to know: The name of Kanye and Kim's baby boy! Kim revealed earlier this fall that she was shying away from another direction name, and stuck a pin in the rumors that they'd welcome a boy named South West.

As for her pick? Kim admitted to Ellen Degeneres that she really dug the name Easton, an English name that's grown in popularity in recent years. Of course that's still a bit of a direction name, but it's one with a long history.

Then again, the couple just might surprise us with something totally unique ... it wouldn't be the first time!

11 Geeky gifts for board game lovers

$
0
0

But, a good board game can do wonders. We started playing some new games recently, and the board games available are nothing like the games I remember. They are richly detailed with varying levels of complexity. They're nothing like the old games I grew up with, which often ended in a lot of board-flipping anger or just plain boredom.

Here is an awesome gift guide for unique and fun gifts for board game novices and enthusiasts alike.

1. Agricola

Agricola
Image: Amazon

This game is a great introduction to newer styles of board games. Agricola has several rounds of play and makes you think about portioning resources on your little farm. It has a family level, too, which my son always begs to play. The details are so rich, and each game is a little different — so even years later, I still love it. You have to play more than once to get the hang of it, but then it draws you in. (Amazon, $49)

2. Moldable fimo clay

Clay

One of the most fun things you can do for your games is to create your own pieces. Instead of using brightly colored wood chips in Agricola to represent animals and crops, you can make your own little pigs and cows, which are infinitely cuter. This is a fun activity to do together, which comes in handy down the line as you play. Get a multicolor pack, so can make all the different animals and crops you want. (Amazon, $8)

3. Pandemic

Pandemic
Image: Amazon

This is a cooperative game where players work together to save the world from four different deadly diseases. It is fun to work together for a change. Everybody wins or everybody loses. This is true in life a lot. And it's a lot more pleasant than most games, like Monopoly. (Amazon, $20)

4. Pandemic Legacy Blue

Legacy
Image: Amazon

This game is a total paradigm shift in how board games are played. Without giving too much away — in Pandemic Legacy you get two games a month for a year and lots of different cards, which change the conditions over time. Find a group and play together for a year — what a fun way to get a group of friends together on a regular basis. You could even play two games in one night, so the meet ups are monthly. (Amazon, $30)

5. Pandemic Legacy Red

Legacy 2
Image: Amazon

If you are getting the blue version, why not get the red version as well? I love the idea of being able to play the game again, since you can't restart the legacy game. You can play with a different group or keep the same players, but try different combinations. It's a fun way to see how much is skill and how much is luck. Can you tell I'm obsessed with this game yet? (Amazon, $49)

6. Mysterium

Mysterium
Image: Amazon

Mysterium is a murder mystery game set in 1920s Scotland. The game is played with different mediums and one ghost who gives clues. This is a semi-cooperative game, where a majority of mediums need to solve the crime before the ghost can rest. (Amazon, $39)

7. Dixit

Dixit
Image: Amazon

Dixit is a really fun family game. The game comes with a large variety of colorful and whimsically drawn cards, and players take turns telling stories based on a card and getting others to guess the right card. It is a fun way to get kids to recall literature we have read. The Chronicles of Narnia is a common theme, but so are Disney movies. (Amazon, $25)

8. Lucite bookshelf

Bookcase
Image: Land Of Nod

Lucite is my favorite new look. It is so funky and clean and is a great piece to mix and match with existing decor. The great thing about this Lucite bookshelf is that it disappears in a room because of the clear sides. It's the perfect way for someone to store a growing board game collection. (The Land of Nod, $200).

9. Family Business

Family Business
Image: Amazon

This is a card game involving strategy and luck. Family Business uses different historical mob families as the card characters. (It is always fun to read their names.) It is quick to set up and very engaging — a fun one for a small group to play together. (Amazon, $14)

10. Black Sheep

Black Sheep
Image: Amazon

Black Sheep is kind of like a beginner version of Agricola in a lot of ways — you collect animals and build your farm. There is a lot of really interesting strategies involved in how you play your cards and influence the other players to put down cards. Kids can play this game as well, making it a great game for players at different levels. (Amazon, $24)

11. Risk: Star Wars edition

Star Wars game
Image: Amaon

This is such a cute edition of Risk. If you've played the original before, you know how it can become tedious quickly. The Star Wars edition reboot does a great job of transporting the game into the Star Wars universe and makes game play a lot more brisk and engaging. The board game enthusiast on your giving list will be pleasantly surprised by the new version, which lets you reenact the final scene from Return of the Jedi. (Amazon, $24)

How to transition your kid's bedroom into a tween room

$
0
0

Now, I am at the threshold of tweendom and this one folks, while slightly breaking my heart, is more likely to break my bank.

There has to be a way to change out all of those fairies, ballerinas and unicorns for more “grown up” décor without completely throwing out every single piece of furniture and blanket you’ve ever bought. That stuff was expensive. So here are a few tips for giving your tween a more “grown-up” room without buying all new.

Ask your tween/teen — especially if they are of the female persuasion

Each child is different, but not every single one cares about the minutia of decorating. Have a talk and find out what your child might like.

Organization is close to sanity

Start by eliminating all the stuff you know is not staying like the Cinderella Lego Blocks. Sure they were adorable at one time, but your 15 year old is not going to be playing with them anytime soon; same goes for all of those board books, lovies and size 4T adorable dresses that have overstayed their welcome. Find them a new home where they can be appropriately loved.

If it doesn’t work, chuck it.

If your tween hates it, get it out of there. Those fairies hanging from the ceiling were darling when she was two, but now she keeps bumping her head into them. Get rid of them — unless she is still way into fairies, then re-purpose them. Just because your kid is big doesn’t mean they’ve outgrown their childhood; each kid is different. Hell, I still love unicorns.

Paint your world beautiful

A can of fresh paint can make a world of difference and can change the entire feel of the room. Believe me, going from ballerina pink to silver can definitely make a tween feel more sophisticated.

Out with the kiddie and in with the teen

In addition to a big kid bed, try big kid bedding — PB Teen has some great patterns and nicer lighting — we opted for modern lamps and lighting, no more pink or Fancy Nancy nightlights. Provide a comfy chair in a well-lit area for reading. It’s not quite the tented reading corner my girls had when they were younger, but it serves the same purpose.

Make it cozy

You’ve changed the bedding and wall colors and moved around some furniture, now throw down a funky area rug to help deaden the sound of all that loud music in your very near future. Wayfair has loads of great patterns in nearly every color your teen could ever want.

Window dressing

Time to pull down those Disney Princess curtains and replace them with room darkening drapes. We’ve actually had these in the girls’ rooms since they were babies to help with nap time, but they are perfect for brooding teens who like to sleep in on weekends.

What’s your favorite tip for transitioning your child’s room into a tween room?

7 Most awkward things about being a parent during Christmas

Now not only do you have to tell Aunty Gladys that you love the horrid Christmas sweater she knitted for you, but you also have to come up with a whole range of fibs to keep the magic alive for your kids.

Oh, yes. Christmas is when uncomfortable parenting moments receive a standing ovation. Here are seven of the most awkward:

1. Letters to Santa

Letters to Santa

Letters to Santa

You actually actively encourage your kids to write out their hopes and dreams in crayon and then pretend to post them to the North Pole, just so you can ransack them and figure out what on the list is achievable. Magical flying purple squirrel with a tiny bolero? Out. A rocking horse made entirely of caramel popcorn? Maybe.

2. Elf on the shelf

confused and curious

confused and curious

Rather than spend your evening sensibly by catching up on sleep or watching the latest episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians (don't judge — we all have our vices), you spend hours arranging a tiny elf into yet another bizarre — but often hilarious — pose, just so your kids think it can move on its own.

3. Santa photos

suspicious toddler and Santa

suspicious toddler and Santa

Why is Santa here? Shouldn't he be making toys? Where's Rudolf? Why is Santa so thin? You spend hours fielding questions, making up elaborate stories just so your kid can sit on a stranger's lap for a photo.

4. Lying about Santa

Pinocchio

Pinocchio

The sled is a hovercraft, that's why it lands so quietly. Bravo. When there's no chimney, Santa abseils down the side of the building, jimmies open a window and crawls in that way. You hear the words come out of your mouth and immediately want to kick yourself in the shin. Now you're going to have to spend three nights in bed with your terrified 4-year-old.

5. Dressing as Santa

aggressive Santa

aggressive Santa

Just because lying about it wasn't enough, now you have to ask your uncle Boris to play Santa without offending him or mentioning his physique. Alternatively, you can "pop out to the store" yourself and hope your kids don't recognise you or question why Santa changed since the day they took photos with him or wonder why you didn't actually buy anything.

6. Sneakily wrapping and then hiding presents

Penguin hiding

Penguin hiding

It's midnight. You've turned your bed into a wrapping station and hold your breath as you fold every corner and rip every bit of tape. Now to find a good hiding place. Under the bed? Too obvious. In the wardrobe? Not going to work either. You rip up the floorboards to stash the goods. The magic has been preserved.

7. Stealthily placing gifts under the tree

Prepare for a lot of herding and shuffling of kids as you lie through your teeth and attempt to sneak Jimmy's new bike into the living room.

One woman's makeup mirror almost burned down her house

$

Don't share mascara because it might cause infection. Watch out for allergic reactions.

These are important things to be aware of, but one woman has a warning for every makeup lover out there — and it's likely something you've never thought of before.

More: 10 Beauty experiences to give your makeup-addicted friends

"If any of you do your makeup in a little mirror in front of the window like I do, stash it away when you're done," Kasey Ault wrote on Facebook Dec. 1. "I just came home to a house full of smoke and found clear evidence of a fire on my desk."

makeup mirror fire

makeup mirror fire

The reason: She believes her makeup mirror reflected the sunlight off the magnified side. "I'm extremely lucky the fire didn't reach the battery of my iPad, my wooden desk, my laundry basket next to my desk," she continued. It miraculously was somehow contained. I had my sweet chihuahua asleep in that room, along with my other three dogs and five cats in the house. I could have lost them all."

More: This foolproof method will make any lipstick matte

Though it's not common, fires resulting from makeup mirrors have happened before. Earlier this year, a British couple's mansion was gutted after a makeup mirror reflected the light. "Cases of reflected light triggering fires in homes are rare, however we would urge the public to be aware of the potential danger of reflective surfaces intensifying the sun's rays," a rep for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service told the Daily Mail in February.

It's most likely to happen in the winter months because the "low-lying sun can shine on fixed surfaces for a prolonged period." So while it probably won't happen to you, it's better safe than sorry. Just stick your mirror in the drawer when you're done applying your makeup.

3 Tips to stay detoxed and healthy during the holiday season

$

Detox means cleansing your body of all the excesses that it has absorbed.

There are many benefits that you can derive from a thorough detox. They include getting rid of chemicals and toxins that accumulate in our bodies from processed foods and ready-made meals, improving the efficiency of the immune system, losing weight and achieving holistic well-being.

There are many products out there that promise complete detox to your mind and body, and there are a number of websites and online tutorials offering detox advice. But, not all of them are trustworthy or genuine.

You need to understand the unique nature and requirements of your body and determine what works for you. Winter is especially the time to cleanse your body and step into the new year in good health. And where better to start than your kitchen? Your nutritional intake and exercise regimen are the two most important factors for an effective detox.

Here are a few tips to help you enjoy a happy and healthy 2016!

Stay hydrated

Water is the key to staying light after a night of indulgence — for instance, the day after a big holiday party. It helps flush out toxins from the body and helps your digestive system recover. Also, winter months are a particularly important time to stay hydrated. It can do wonders for your skin and overall health.

It works even better when the first thing that you have in the morning is a cup of warm water with a slice of fresh lemon or lime in it — feel free to add honey too! Tangy lime is rich in antioxidants and will help speed up the cleansing process.

You can continue sipping on infused water throughout the day and enjoy the multitude of benefits. Vitamin C and potassium are present in abundance in lemons and limes, which help your body achieve optimal performance.

Vitamin C helps break down toxins into water-soluble form and speed up their elimination from the body. Lemon also helps increase enzyme production in the body and aids in blood purification.

Eat greens

Green leafy veggies are a best bet to give your body tons of nutrition as well as essential nutrients and minerals. Robust kale, mustard greens, turnip tops, chard and ice spinach are all found in most markets — especially during the winter months. Escarole is another bridging green that can be a tremendously powerful source of nutrition in the winter.

Trendy kale and flavor-rich collards that are abundant in winter are part of the Brassica vegetable family and are nutritional powerhouses, rich in manganese, potassium, phytochemicals, vitamins A, C, K and E and a host of other nutrients.

Dark green veggies are among the most powerful detoxing foods that you can eat. These foods help create a strong alkaline environment in the body to help reduce the growth of bad bacteria and acids. An alkaline body environment is healthy and prevents the buildup of cellular toxins, including cancer-causing free radicals.

Chlorophyll present in green leafy veggies increases oxygen supply to cells, thereby improving their health.

Get some light exercise

Heavy exercise when you are feeling bloated and full can do more harm than good. A brisk walk can give the much-needed jolt to your metabolism that has been lulled to sleep by the fat and sugar overload from holiday festivities!

The extra calories that have been piled on need to be worked off or they may accumulate in unseemly or even dangerous places. If it’s the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas, a brisk walk can prime your metabolism to help process the extra intake.

Yoga is another great way to give your body a cleansing workout. It takes into account the physical and spiritual health of a person. Yoga is a great way to calm and soothe both body and spirit. A healthy mind is an essential part of a comprehensive detox — so grab your gear and get moving!

Also make sure that you remove excess alcohol buildup from your body. Foods containing fructose will help burn alcohol in the body. Fresh fruit juices, coconut water and tomato juice will help your body recover from a hangover, and they also supply vitamins and minerals.

The bottom line

Winter is the best time to pamper yourself. It is the season when some of the healthiest fruits and veggies around begin to make their seasonal appearance in markets. In addition to indulging in seasonal festivities, make sure that you give your body the TLC it deserves. A smart detox can help you start the new year on a happy and healthy note.

Why I shared my colonoscopy on social media

$
0
0

In the past few months I have offered up quick accounts of my experience with mammograms, colonoscopy, and gastrostomy. Some might call that over-sharing. The fact is, I deliberately look for ways to either be funny or poignant about things that matter to people my own age, to try to humanize daunting milestones.

I figure if I can make fun of myself, or relate a positive ending to a scary scenario, perhaps others will be less afraid to tackle those things we all know we should be checking up on. Who in their right mind would voluntarily have tender bits squashed between glass plates or be probed with a medical Roto-Rooter? Up to this age, we have mostly just had the odd x-ray on creaky knees or aching backs, maybe a periodic pap smear.

Stuff is getting more real, and 50 years of wear and tear warrants a closer look.

Our generation, those born between 1950 and 1970, are the ones who feasted on convenience foods. Artificial flavorings, colors and sweeteners, along with a laundry-list of preservatives, were our newly-working mothers' saviors in the kitchen. We were the Tang Generation. We were Cheez Whiz, Twinkies and SpaghettiOs. TV dinners in partitioned tinfoil pans. Most of that stuff still exists to some degree, but for us then, they were new-fangled inventions, and we gobbled them up.

We have since learned we weren't maybe so forward-thinking after all, because our digestive and respiratory tissues have suffered. We have figured out that fructose and pesticides weren't wise. We are back to basic fresh foods responsibly-produced, but still need to keep apprised of our aging assumptions, which means doing all of those eeww-inducing and totally-humbling procedures.

I cannot tell you how many friends of mine, and their loved ones, have made themselves get screened and come back relieved. Some of them have come back with battle plans. A few of them waited too long and are now fighting for their lives.

Some of us are going to get sick no matter what we do; it's the crappiest part of getting older. We shore up one another as best we can, try to be understanding and helpful without intruding upon private pain and circle the wagons. Being as proactive as we can about our own bodies is the least we can do not just for ourselves but for those who love us even when we are in denial.

So, I figure I tell you about my colonoscopy and conquering a 30-year fear in the hands of compassionate professionals, maybe you'll think about booking your own Kodak Moments — thanks to my friend Gail for that nickname. Google the terms and understand what's at stake.

Time itself feels like it's stuck on 78 rpms and the needle skips. So get out there. Do the stuff that makes you feel all puppy-tail-wiggly and consciously enjoy it. Be present enough to forget your stresses for the duration of a belly-laugh. Hug somebody who doesn't get enough of them. Sing theme songs from sitcoms only your contemporaries will remember. If you forget a few of the words, just make them up and keep singing.

Have a dance party with a giggly little kid. Let them paint your toe nails. Boogie at the bus stop to keep warm on a wintry day. Wear your softest blue jeans and comfortable shoes and take a friend's dog for a walk; they get an hour's grace and you get a little fresh air with a happy canine companion in whose company it will be tough not to grin. Send an anonymous fan letter to a friend. Bake bread so your house smells like heaven for the day. Lose yourself in a favorite book. Try something you've always had a private yen for. (My Mum's was archery). Love yourself a little. It's all Good Medicine.

Slow Cooker Sunday: The easiest bourbon-glazed holiday ham you’ll ever make

The hardest part about preparing this ham is making sure it fits in the slow cooker. I've made the mistake before of getting a ham that was a little too big.

So now I make sure to get a ham that's on the smaller side when cooking it in the slow cooker so the lid will fit on top.

The bourbon, butter and apple cider glaze definitely agrees with this scrumptious ham, and it's better than any glaze that comes premade.

How the obsession with Adele's bodyguard is a grand step toward equality

$
0
0

What struck me is that we finally have equality. If George Clooney had a female bodyguard and we were shown pictures of her in a bikini, women would think she was being wronged. Women of 2015 are supposed to be carrying on the banner of equal pay for equal work. We hold men accountable that it’s not the look of a woman but that she can do her job. The lead story, male and female, has come to focus on how that person looks, not if he or she is the most qualified.

Watching the program, I felt like I was on the wrong-side of a double standard, one where a female entertainer can have eye-candy as their “bodyguard” because he can still do the job, yet the press would think a female bodyguard was just hired for her looks. Feminists would be outraged. Mothers would tell their daughters this should not be their hero. We would look into our child’s eyes and say a woman is to be valued for her brains, her skills and her inner beauty. There would be a social media storm, decrying that a woman bodyguard is just as capable regardless of her allure.

We teach our sons that they must be strong, yet caring. We mentor our boys so that they see the strength of their female peers. Our children, both girls and boys, play together on the playground and work together on STEM projects. Employers are learning to see the value of an integrated workforce. Companies are penalized for having unfair hiring and promoting practices.

Still, the glass ceiling remains. Image still trumps resumé. A contestant on a beauty pageant was ridiculed for showing her brain and her heart. Female athletes are still rated first on looks, second on ability. Women are still encouraged to be teachers rather than engineers.

For over 50 years, women have fought for gender equality.

I never expected the first equality achieved would be a male bodyguard being valued for his looks and not his capability.

How regular weekly dinners made my family closer

$
0

There were many justifications for repurposing the large formal dining room, the biggest room in our house:

  1. We are not "formal dining room people," plus we've left our friends and family behind in our former city.

  2. There's a (small) eating area off the kitchen.

  3. We really, really need extra living space — and, hey, I’m all about making a home work for its people!

Sometimes, however, we become so used to doing things the same old way that we get stuck doing things the same old way.

One day, I had a moment of clarity. There we were, my lovely family — including two young men (now over 6 feet tall), girlfriends, my daughter, a boyfriend (you get the picture) — squeezed around a little table in a little room.

“What is this madness?” I asked. It was time to take back the dining room. Since I love to decorate, this gave me a fun new project — but my intentions were very altruistic, I swear!

I found a large vintage dining set at a country auction for $50, which fit my small redecorating budget quite well. Do you know that many of the baby boomers are downsizing and getting rid of their old dining room sets? There are some great bargains out there, and you can easily repurpose them so that they stand up to modern family living. Check out my how-to blog post.

What I am most happy about is that we not only gained a larger, more comfortable dining room, but also our occasional family dinners, typically held on special occasions, have evolved into a new tradition: the weekly family dinner night.

Here are our family dinner night “rules”:

Flexibility is key

Since everyone’s schedule is irregular — these are young people with school, shift work and part-time jobs, plus two of them are living on their own — we figure out a night that works for everybody. This is our biggest challenge, but lots of texting and messaging helps. If someone can’t make it, we carry on (and forgive them!).

A #NotFancy menu and atmosphere is preferred

My son’s girlfriend and I came up with this hashtag as a bit of a joke (it tends to drive my son a little crazy since he hates hashtags), but our meals can be classified as “cheap and cheerful.” This means, we cook a lot of Crock-Pot stews in the winter, barbecued burgers and chicken in the summer and easy, but comforting meals, such as spaghetti bolognese. I make sure that there is lots of food, since the two kids who don’t live at home love to take leftovers.

While the meal is casual, this doesn’t mean that we don’t pretty things up — candles, place mats, napkins and flowers are all essential parts of the dinner.

Participation in meal planning and preparation is highly valued

This did not start out as a rule, but it has evolved over time so that everyone is so invested in our weekly dinners that they get very involved in the meal planning. My foodie son will show up a couple of hours early, if time permits, to help with food prep. My daughter often brings over extra items for the meal and also helps out with food prep. Texting and Facebook messaging get utilized a lot — both with meal suggestions, grocery store bargains, recipes and, of course, scheduling.

Can I mention here that it is a lot more satisfying to text the kids who are no longer living at home with messages other than, “How are thing’s going?”

Friends are always welcome

Of course, we welcome significant others who become regular participants of the family dinners, but friends get included too, if they happen to be around. A girlfriend’s father was recently visiting from Europe, and it was highly anticipated by all of us that he would be joining us at the weekly dinner.

You will be shunned and mocked (OK, maybe a slight exaggeration) if you bring a cell phone to the table

The dinners are all about human interaction and lively conversation.

Nobody leaves until everything is cleaned up (Does this need to be said?)

Let’s just say that this is the expectation, but occasionally someone (I’m not naming names here) will sneak away early, thinking that nobody notices (we all do).

It is hard to summarize the benefits to my family of our regular weekly dinners, but sometimes when I walk into the kitchen to grab an item we forgot, I stop for a moment and listen to the sounds of my family’s laughter and conversation and silently give thanks to the wise and insightful builder of our old house, who knew that a formal dining room was an essential part of a family home.
