How to use your menstrual cycle to your fat-burning advantage

$

We talked with naturopathic doctor, personal trainer, female hormone expert and co-author of Lose Weight Here, Dr. Jade Teta — who offers a practical guide on how you can use your menstrual cycle to help you reach your health and fitness goals. And, if you’re perimenopausal, menopausal or post-menopausal, he offers guidance here too.

First, a primer on menses

The menstrual cycle is measured from day one of your period up to day one of your next menstrual cycle. The length of the average menstrual cycle is 28 days (though cycle length can vary anywhere from 21 to 35 days).

On day one of your cycle — the day when bleeding starts — both estrogen and progesterone are low. During the first part of your cycle (days 1-14), progesterone remains low as estrogen begins to rise, peaking around day 14. Mid-cycle is typically when you would ovulate: the follicle, stimulated by the luteinizing hormone, releases the egg. The follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. The first part of the menstrual cycle can be thought of as estrogen-dominant.

After ovulation, on days 15-28, estrogen decreases as progesterone rises. You can think of the second part of the menstrual cycle as being progesterone-dominant.

More: Reasons you should exercise during your period

This continual rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone has an effect on fat storage and fat burning. These two hormones also influence two primary fat-regulating hormones — insulin and cortisol. Estrogen decreases insulin’s capacity to store fat, making the body more sensitive to insulin. Both estrogen and progesterone help buffer the negative effects of cortisol, the stress hormone that promotes fat storage.

So what do we make of all this?

How to exercise during the first half of your cycle

Higher estrogen = More fat burning and muscle building

When estrogen is rising during the first 14 days of your cycle, your body will have a higher tolerance for more exercise overall. It’s an ideal time to focus on weight training.

According to Teta, estrogen is an anti-stress hormone; a fairly good anabolic hormone (meaning that estrogen encourages cellular growth and contributes to building muscle); and an insulin-sensitizing hormone, which means that you’ll be less likely to store fat.

Higher estrogen levels also mean that you can consume more carbohydrates and exercise more without negative consequences. “This is a good time,” says Teta, “to do weight training. Your body is able to handle more stress, including more exercise overall, and a higher carbohydrate consumption — just don’t go overboard!”

How to exercise during the second half of your cycle

Higher progesterone = More fat storing and muscle sparing

As progesterone rises and estrogen falls the two weeks after ovulation, or during days 15-28, your body will have less tolerance for too much exercise. Aim to pair higher intensity and shorter duration exercises (like heavy weight lifting) with moderate-intensity and longer duration cardio — and lots of leisure walking on most days.

With higher progesterone levels, Teta advises going easier on exercise and lowering your carbohydrate intake. During this time, you are less insulin sensitive, which means that consuming carbohydrates (especially refined sugars and starches) — in excess of what you need — will likely be stored as fat.

Exceptions to the rule

Using your menstrual cycle to lose fat won't work for you if:

  • You are naturally more insulin resistant
  • You have polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • You have hypothyroidism (low thyroid)
  • You have adrenal fatigue
  • You have irregular periods
  • You take birth control pills
  • You are on hormone replacement therapy

How to exercise during perimenopause

The hormonal shifts that eventually lead to menopause can begin from age 35 — though many women “feel” these shifts in their 40s. This transitional period is known as perimenopause. You’re still getting your period, but there may be wild fluctuations in your estrogen and progesterone levels that affect your mood, body temperature, mental focus, sleep and appetite.

Perimenopause is very much like experiencing prolonged premenstrual syndrome, says Teta. Estrogen and progesterone begin dropping, but estrogen levels are higher relative to progesterone. Because progesterone levels are not as high as they should be, a woman will usually be in an estrogen-dominant state. “This means that perimenopausal women tend to have increased food cravings. During perimenopause, hormonal changes also affect the thyroid and adrenal glands, which — when combined with lower levels of estrogen — contribute to insulin resistance. This means that perimenopausal women are less able to tolerate carbohydrates and more likely to gain fat,” explains Teta.

More: The never-ending period and what can cause this condition

If you’re in perimenopause — and losing weight is a health goal — it’s important to not overexercise and to decrease your carbohydrate consumption. Too much exercise increases hunger and cravings, especially for starchy carbohydrates. But, your body will be less likely to burn them during perimenopause.

How to exercise during menopause and post-menopause

In menopause and beyond, both estrogen and progesterone are low. You are not ovulating, and you will not have had a period in the last 12 months. At menopause, the wild hormonal fluctuations of perimenopause have stabilized. However, with the dramatic decline in estrogen and progesterone, your levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) can escalate. Your body becomes much more sensitive to stress — and this includes too much exercise. Overexercising — like engaging in daily, long-duration cardio, CrossFit or weight training — without adequate rest periods can lead to increased fat storage, weight gain and muscle loss.

Low estrogen levels in menopause and post-menopause also mean a high likelihood of insulin resistance — even if you eat the same amount of calories that you always have. “This means that you really won’t be able to consume as many carbohydrates as you did prior to menopause — especially if weight loss is a goal,” says Teta.

During perimenopause and menopause, the key is to take a "Goldilocks" approach to exercise — not too much, not too little, just enough for you. And your exercise regimen should include plenty of rest and recovery activities, like walking.

Why DIY and maker culture are making Canada a more creative place

The words “maker” and “DIYer” can mean vastly different things. In this case, "maker culture" refers to a contemporary subculture representing a technology-based extension of DIY culture, while "DIY culture" focuses on the ethic of self-sufficiency by completing tasks without the aid of a paid expert in a variety of disciplines, including home improvement, first aid or creative works.

This ethos first came to fruition in 2006 and has strong roots in the tech and hacking community.

So what is it about maker and DIY culture that is making Canada more creative?

You can find support and training to finish a project you never thought possible

Rather than relying on others to make things for you, maker spaces teach in a collaborative setting. So whether you want to learn about 3-D printing, video game design or bookbinding, these spaces teach you how to make and create items. For example, in Toronto, you can attend workshops and classes at The Shop and learn everything from ceramics to beekeeping to woodworking.

Kids are making and shaping our future

Children who have an interest in STEM fields have been flocking to Maker Faires throughout Canada to collaborate and learn with other children their age. In Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver, they have Maker Junior, an organization dedicated to making with kids. Its biggest goal is to create maker-centred learning for young people and to help them create a better sense of self and a sense of community that empower them to engage with their world and others.

Author David Lewis of EdSurge explains, "Some young makers might discover a new passion for STEM or develop a hobby that doesn't involve bright screens and inactivity. They also get to go home with a sense of accomplishment and the slightly wicked feeling that they have been allowed to do something a little dangerous."

More: Who says girls aren't good at STEM?

Creating safe spaces to learn

Hackerspaces and makerspaces are commonly associated with dude-bros and places that aren’t necessarily comfortable or safe for women. But if you’re a techno wannabe, multimedia artist or nerd, several venues are actually gender nonconforming and female friendly. The Tool Library (located in Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax and Vancouver) and Dames Making Games are two spaces committed to providing safe spaces for those developing, growing and wanting to learn more.

According to the Feminist Journal of Art and Digital Culture, "In the case of feminist hackerspaces, such safer spaces are not only about safer speaking spaces, but also safer making and trying spaces. Moreover, the idea of creating safer spaces within hackerspaces is a way to invite and/or retain more feminists and gender nonconformists, among others, who might not fully identify with the dominant hacker culture."

Having an impulsive personality can lead to eating disorder, says new study

$

Being impulsive isn't always a bad thing. After all, it's the spontaneous trip-takers, sky divers and party-throwers that seem to have the most fun. But impulsive decisions can wreak havoc on your waistline, no question. (Let the woman among us who hasn't eaten a giant, gourmet cupcake because it was attractively displayed in the bakery window raise her hand now.) A new study shows exactly how much this one personality trait could be harming your health.

Research from the University of Chicago found that girls who had problems with self-regulating and planning ahead were more likely to binge eat and suffer health problems because of it.

"Food in our society is so ubiquitous," said Andrea Goldschmidt, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience and author of the paper, in a press release. "You can't even go to [a hardware store] without seeing colorful candy bars in the checkout line. When kids have [problems] controlling their behaviors, it makes sense they would disinhibit themselves around food."

And it's not just kids. While the researchers noted it in girls as young as ten, the pattern of impulsive decisions and binge eating continued through the teen years and they added that previous studies have shown similar patterns in adults.

Ultimately, Goldschmidt hopes that identifying impulsivity as one of the root causes of binge eating will lead to better prevention and treatment of the disorder that affects up to five percent of men and women. Even if you don't lose control in a true binge, the information can be helpful to all of us who struggle between what we know we should be eating and what we want to eat, says Jennie Miremadi, M.S., a certified holistic nutrition counselor. She sees this a lot in her practice and offers these five tips for controlling impulsive eating:

  1. Eat mindfully, tasting each and every bite of food.
  2. Ditch distractions, like the TV, the internet and your phone, during mealtimes.
  3. Take small bites and eat slowly.
  4. Check in with your stomach and make sure your desire to eat is coming from hunger and not from your taste buds.
  5. Once you're satisfied, put down the fork and stop eating. (She adds the key to this step is recognizing that your food is not a limited resource and you can always come back and eat more if you get hungry again later!)

Depressed? There's an app for that

According to The National Institute for Mental Health, 6.7 percent of adults in the United States have suffered from at least one depressive episode in the last year. Women are 70 percent more likely to experience depression in their lifetimes than men, and postpartum depression no doubt plays a major role in that statistic.

More'Get the Picture' aims to change how we view people living with mental illness

However, one of the scariest statistics among these is that 50 percent of Americans are not seeking treatment for their mental illness. Many people remain in denial over their depression for years, while others refuse to believe it's something for which they need medical treatment. Still more don't seek treatment because they simply can't afford the staggeringly high cost of therapy. But technology may have finally found a way around this last obstacle.

Smartphone apps called Behavior Intervention Technologies have begun to emerge as an alternative way to seek treatment for mental health issues like depression and anxiety. While it doesn't involve meeting face-to-face with an unbiased therapist, the app technology claims to offer the same benefits — understanding your difficulties and finding a way to effectively combat them.

Some mental health apps do offer the opportunity to communicate with a therapist, either via phone calls or online messaging, which according to recent research, is comparably helpful to face-to-face therapy. As such, other countries such as Australia, the Netherlands and Britain have already begun to incorporate remote therapy as an option in their healthcare systems. Yet one more way other countries are far surpassing America's healthcare plans.

MoreBreaking the mental illness stigma

But thankfully, American engineers and scientists are on the way to making these more accessible forms of therapy more readily available to us. Northwestern University’s Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies has come up with several BIT apps already that help combat common mental health disorders like depression and anxiety in different ways.

1. Daily Feats

One majorly debilitating aspect of depression is feeling like you're not accomplishing anything, or only seeing what you're not achieving. Daily Feats helps you work through that by allowing you to structure your day into small feats that you can check off as you do them. They can be anything from getting out of bed, to making it to the gym. Similar to an exercise app that allows you to see how your exercise habits are improving over time, this app allows you to see all the mental hurdles you made it over in a day, which in turn helps you focus on the positives rather than the negatives.

2. Aspire

Sometimes we experience situational anxiety because we feel stuck in life, whether it's in our career, our personal life, or with a habit we can't seem to shake. Aspire allows you identify what fulfills you and gives you purpose, and helps you map out what little things you can do each day to get closer to that feeling. These things can be as general as finding three ways to support your family, or a way to feel physically fit, even if it's as basic as walking around the block.

3. Though Challenger

When you're depressed or anxious, sometimes it feels impossible to stop the negative thoughts from filling your head. Thought Challenger encourages you to write those thoughts down, and then consider them from a different angle so that they don't look so daunting and anxiety-producing.

There are already plenty of mental health apps on the market, but there is little data behind them to show how effective they really are. This comprehensive study at Northwestern could change all that though, because it will be able to chronicle each apps' success rate in a somewhat controlled environment (a University).

The next step will of course be finding a way to incorporate such apps into a healthcare plan. However, with the current healthcare systems in place, that will likely be a long time coming. But the more important (and might I add more positive) thing to focus on here is these apps will make mental health treatments much more available to people who might not otherwise help themselves.

Do you feel things more deeply than most people?

Ever feel haunted by your past? Is it harder for you to let things go than it seems for other people? Do everyday situations often feel too intense? The surprising answer to these questions may lie in your genes, not your mind, say scientists from the University of Melbourne. In a study that will relieve every woman who's ever been told she's "too sensitive," researchers found that people who have a certain gene are more affected by their life experiences.

Previous research has linked the SERT gene with mood disorders, but this new study found that there is more to the picture. While it is true that people who carry the short-short form of the gene are more likely to become depressed after a negative event, like trauma or abuse, it turns out that they're also more likely to be happier than the general population after a positive event.

"Our results suggest some people have a genetic makeup that makes them more susceptible to negative environments, but if put in a supportive environment these same people are likely to thrive," said Chad Bousman, Ph.D. a professor and lead author of the study, in a press release.

As a sensitive person myself, I love this idea that my deep emotional life is a feature not a flaw — especially as it gives me permission to appreciate the extreme highs I get along with learning to moderate the deep lows. It's also comforting to know that if the roller coaster of life goes down then it will certainly come back up again in time.

And this research is particularly great news for people who suffer from mood disorders, Bousman added. "A person's genes alone are not enough to determine how they might experience depression," he said. "This research tells us that what may be considered a risk gene in one context, may actually be beneficial in another. So, this directly opposes the notion of genetic determinism, the idea that your genes define your fate."

He explained that, rather, feelings oppressed by overwhelming emotions, those of us who are super-feelers should feel a greater sense of control from this information. "You can't change your genotype or go back and change your childhood, but you can take steps to modify your current environment," he said.

In a world where people are often accused of not feeling enough or of being insensitive, here's to feeling all the feels! Anyone else struggle with feeling too much? How do you deal?

More: Miley Cyrus wants a plastic surgery procedure that's truly terrifying

The 22-year-old singer and her brother, Braison Cyrus, have been working in British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest to raise awareness for wolf culling and grizzly bear hunting — and the work seems to have Cyrus questioning her own purpose.

British Columbia's wolf culling is already controversial. The practice is aimed at protecting caribou, an endangered species preyed upon by wolves. But conservationists question whether culling upsets the area's natural ecosystem, and Cyrus is the latest to criticize the practice.

"When I first spoke out, I knew in my heart that the wolf cull was wrong," Cyrus said on the website for Pacific Wild, a nonprofit she's working with in British Columbia. "But after this visit, I know science is on my side, not just on the wolf cull, but also on the trophy hunt issue. Both are unsustainable and both are horrific. Both have to end."

What's more, Cyrus said her time in the wild made her realize that her music career isn't such a big deal.

She continued, "I'm like, 'I can't believe I'm not a biologist and I'm a pop star. That's ridiculous.' But that's given me such a platform."

Cyrus started speaking out against wolf culling earlier this month, when she urged her Instagram followers to sign a petition against the practice. Pamela Anderson has also spoken out against wolf culling in British Columbia, her home province.

British Columbia premier Christy Clark has addressed the criticism from both stars, saying, "We're trying to defend an endangered species and population of caribou that will go utterly extinct in British Columbia if we don't do this. I just hope that they really work a little to understand the issue."

That said, please go to a professional if you're ready to dye your arches. Oxidative dyes (like those found in most hair coloring and brow dye, require an oxidative agent (like hydrogen peroxide) to work.

This means there's a possibility for serious allergic reactions or even blindness if you get some of the dye into your eyes.

A professional understands the risks and will be able to apply in a way that avoids your eyes while still giving you the color you desire. Plus, many hair colors require a clean slate (of sorts) for it to stick, meaning you'll have to bleach your brows before going bright. This brings with it even more risk, so it's better to leave it to the pros.

Be prepared, though: The average lifespan of eyebrow hair is about four months, meaning you'll be doing a lot of upkeep to keep your color bright.

But it'll be totally worth it for eyebrows like these.

But is Lambert already moving on? One source seems to think so.

The insider revealed to E! News that Lambert is taking things one day at a time following her split, but that she's enjoying the single life so far.

Even amid rumors of a pretty nasty divorce, Lambert has already returned to the stage. Sources say she's excited for the future and that she wants to focus on her music more than ever, which is exciting for her fans, and, reportedly, therapeutic for her.

And when it comes to romance, sources say the Grammy winner is just taking things as they come.

She is reportedly planning to take some time off for herself before she'll consider another relationship. But the insider told E! News that Lambert isn't writing anything off just yet and that she believes she'll get another chance at love.

And Lambert, who is reportedly a hopeless romantic, plans to take things slower and be a little wiser with her future relationships, the source said. It was revealed that Lambert still wants a family, but only if it's meant to be.

Rumors of cheating and nastiness between what was once the golden couple of country music have been swirling ever since the divorce announcement, but this source says Lambert only wishes the best for Shelton and wants him to move on and find happiness. We hope it's true!

Soon after the split was announced, sources close to the couple said busy schedules and constant rumors of infidelity were what went wrong.

"Their busy schedules were a big issue for them. They both worked a lot and had to spend a lot of time apart. The less time they spent together, the more they grew apart," one insider said, adding, "Trust was an issue for both of them. It went along with having to spend a lot of time apart. Rumors of infidelity put stress on them. Despite denials, even just rumors of cheating are still hard to hear."

"We met at the Grammys when I was 13 years old," 20-year-old Hadid shared. "And he asked me to a baseball game, and I said, 'No.'"

The reason, however, might be the most awkward, surprising, hilarious part of the whole story.

"I was so nervous," Hadid continued. "I literally didn't even know what it meant to hang out with a boy. And also, Grammys are on a Sunday, and I didn't want to tell him that I had school the next day, so I was like, 'No, maybe next time.'"

We all know how the story ends — Hadid and 26-year-old Jonas have been dating since May. But at the time, Jonas seemed to handle the rejection pretty well, even though he was in front of his then-bandmates, Kevin and Nick Jonas. According to Hadid, he slipped his phone number to her mom, Yolanda Foster, before the end of the night.

"[He] wrote it on a piece of paper and gave it to my mom," Hadid dished. "And then we"ve been friends ever since. Except now. We're more than friends, obvs."

This story just makes us really curious to know how much of a role Hadid's mom had to play in getting the two of them together. Later that day, an unidentified source was concerned about Rounds and contacted police. It is unclear why she became concerned for her, but the Clarkstown Police Department immediately responded to the call and according to a second source, officers were forced to break down Rounds' hotel door.

While her medical status is currently unknown, she is said to be still under doctors' care at Nyack Hospital, where she was taken by the authorities.

"She had apparently taken some pills and drank wine. It looked to be a suicide attempt," the source claims. "Michelle was very depressed lately over the divorce and custody battle with Rosie. In fact, in the past few days, [she] and Rosie spoke and they had a bitter argument."

This "cry for help," as the insider puts it, comes just two weeks after rumors began circulating that O’Donnell has not only moved on but possibly may even be living with a new girlfriend.

It was widely reported that Tatum O’Neal and O’Donnell might be a new hot item. The last time I was in school was before she was born, so this time around I'm learning to be a student all over again. The late nights of cramming are harder to do when I know my daughter will wake up at 6 the next morning and need me to help her get ready for her own school day. The textbooks are a little harder to pore through when Curious George is playing in the background after school or when I'm sitting down to help her work on a project. Still, we press on. Even though it's been a challenge with a steep learning curve, I treasure the way she looks at me and smiles when I sit down next to her with a book in my hands. It's like she knows and is proud too.

I felt proud when I brought her to a doctoral program party, where she was able to see a host of other student mothers who have likewise placed a high value on their education and have brought their children along for the ride.

Education is a beautiful thing. I have felt this way all along, but my reverence for education has grown exponentially as I've participated in the educational process with a little one watching me. It is one thing to teach our children the value of a good education and entirely another thing to live out the value of it before their very eyes. I know not all parents can afford — with either time or money — to return to a formal education, but I truly believe that obtaining a particular degree isn't exactly the point, anyway.

The point is teaching our children that the human brain is the most valuable resource available to anyone and that the growth of our intellect and intelligence is not an option — it is a duty and a privilege. And for me, as a single parent, it is the resource that no one can take away from me and that I will use to provide my child with the life I want for her.

Tim Tams — the cookie that will ruin you for all other desserts

I remember the first time I realized that American dessert is a total sham. It was in London, and I was handed half a candy bar by someone who couldn't finish it. Never being one to turn down free candy from people I barely know — or ever, in any situation — I ate it. I don't remember what kind it was; I just remember feeling betrayed. As a resident of Hershey, Pennsylvania, I was sure I knew what chocolate was. I didn't. If you've had British chocolate, you know the feeling.

Now imagine that feeling, magnified by a factor of duodecillion, and that's what it's like to put a Tim Tam — a delicious Australian cookie biscuit made of chocolate creme sandwiched between crispy malted chocolate and dipped in chocolate — in your mouth. You don't just eat Tim Tams — you have a relationship with them, and it looks like this:

1. Someone introduces you to Tim Tams

Maybe it's your Australian friend or some other person who has been to Australia lately. They hand you a packet of the treat. "You have to check out Tim Tams," they tell you. You're not sure. After all, Tim Tams are biscuits, and what's wrong with American cookies?

2. You become infatuated

After your first Tim Tam, all you want to do is lock yourself indoors and celebrate this newfound love. Everything is more enjoyable with Tim Tams: a cup of coffee, a little Netflix, stolen rendezvous at the office...

More: 8 Reasons the selfie spoon is a food lover's nightmare

3. You can't shut up about your new love

You're starting to annoy the crap out of people, but you can't help it. Is it really so wrong that you just want everyone to have what you have? You decline invitations to go get frozen yogurt because you already have the only dessert you need. If your friends can't understand this kind of love, well, what kind of friends are they? You stop taking calls.

4. The honeymoon phase ends

You will eventually finish your tray of Tim Tams. One day you will wake up to have your morning coffee Tim Tam, and you will notice that it is the last one. "It's OK," you think. "I'll just get some more when I go to the store later."

More: Is the new bottled Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino as good as the real thing?

5. The long-distance phase begins

You do not get more when you go to the store later, because the shelves there are stocked with garbage cookies. It's then that you remember that America was never Tim Tams' home. They're in Australia, you're in America, and there are miles of ocean and loneliness between you.

You frantically Google phrases like "where can I buy Tim Tams in America" and "Tim Tams America pls" and "oh god tim tams whyyyyyyy"

You sullenly order some off of Amazon, paying too much for Tim Tams' transportation but accepting that long-distance relationships are hard work.

6. You stray a little

You're only human, after all. You have needs. Maybe one day you see that Target is selling something called Tim Tams, but the package isn't the same. The taste isn't the same. It just isn't the same. In your weakest moment, you aren't proud to admit that you may have bought some Oreos.

7. You break up with Tim Tams for a while

It's just too much. The shipping fees, the roller coaster of emotion that starts with the high of tearing off the wrapper of a new tray and ends with the low of heartbreaking crumbs, the guilt and shame of turning to Chips Ahoy when your family asks you to pick up dessert at the store — it's all too much. You decide you need a break from this — you start taking calls from your friends again and appreciate that they welcome you back and give you solace.

More: Unpopular opinion: In-N-Out Burger ain't all that

8. You always come back to Tim Tams. Why can't you quit Tim Tams?

One day, you'll be doing something mundane, like tidying the house or making some corpo spreadsheet thing and, with a pang of intense emotion, you'll think, "Gee, it might be nice to see Tim Tams again." You shouldn't. You know you shouldn't. The pain of separation is too great. But you do.

You always will.

The 16-year-old is the youngest son of Foster and her ex-husband, real estate developer Mohamed Hadid and, as you can probably imagine, is just as beautiful as the rest of his family.

"They're my best friends," Anwar told Seventeen. They can be really protective, but they've taught me not to let other people define what I'm capable of."

3 Easy ways to bring the farm to your city kid’s table (wherever you live)

So we teamed up with #GenStem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) kids to make pizza from local tomatoes and took to the farms of Brooklyn to get in touch with nature. We worked on sustainability in a real way and had messy, non-digital fun (yes, it’s possible for this generation of Digital Natives) with their nimble digits. With so many benefits, it’s easy to see why parents want to share this activity (and pizza recipe from WellnessInTheSchools.org). But cities are often too cramped to practice. Right? Wrong! Here are three easy ways to stay in the green.

1. Greenmarket shopping

Shop at your neighborhood farmer's market to get fresh, seasonal produce. This is a great way to introduce your child to seasonal local produce. Additionally, they can get a hands-on appreciation for how ripe vegetables and fruit feel. National markets can be found easily.

2. Create a school garden

Many schools have the space for a selective garden, but have never considered how they can use it for a garden. A great resource is KidsGardening.org.

Garden in every school (VIDEO)

3. Plant herbs indoors

Easy and readily used, fresh-picked rosemary, mint and parsley bring joy to your young farmer. Want to try something new? Grow an indoor spice garden. Spices are parts of the plant that are not leafy. Think roots, stems, bulbs, bark or seeds. They may also have medicinal aspects, so this is a double treat. Both herb and spice growing tips can be found at Greenchildmagazine.com

Lena Dunham's entire ESPN interview should be your new exercise anthem

Recently Girls star Lena Dunham sat down with ESPN magazine to talk about her attitude towards exercise, sports and health. And, true to form, she bucks the starlet stereotype — there are no liquid diets, endless treadmill runs or plugs for SoulCycle in the whole interview. Instead, she serves up all realness, and we can guarantee she'll have you nodding in agreement.

She had to overcome her gym class trauma

Sure, there were some kids who excelled in gym, but for most of us it was a mix of uncomfortable polyester shorts, worries about being picked last and the always-humiliating Presidential Fitness Test. Add in some body shame if you hit puberty before or after your peers or if you didn't align perfectly with the Abercrombie ideal. Lena feels your pain. "I was not an athletic kid. I was the kid who came up with a thousand excuses not to take a gym class. Even now, if I could, I would do all my work from bed," she said. But she realized that for her health and her career (her character Hannah took up running in the show) she needed to have a better relationship with exercise. Now, she says she has a whole new relationship with an activity she formerly considered "torturous."

She had to learn to run

For every loping gazelle effortlessly running around your neighborhood, there are likely ten of us with beet-red faces, breathing so hard we sound like asthmatic hyenas. Running did not come naturally at first for Lena either — but that didn't stop her from embracing the sport. She even took a few lessons from a running coach to get her form down. "I just ran down the street and it felt nice," she said. "To run with this increased confidence and the sense that I could actually use my body to get places, that was a pretty big revelation considering I've already been alive for almost three decades."

She's scared to try new things — but does anyhow

A month ago, the actress made waves for Instagramming a paparazzi picture of herself running in a crop top. At first, she said seeing the picture embarrassed her but then she realized how amazing it really was. "Not usually one to post a paparazzi shot but this fills me with pride," she noted on Instagram. "When I saw that picture, what would normally embarrass me, which is a shot of me in physical motion, made me feel really good. I'm an open person, but that was pretty vulnerable for me. Trying feats of physicality is not my jam. It had taken guts for me to do it, and when I saw the picture and realized, 'Oh, I don't hate what I look like doing this,' that I looked like a person who could run, that was just so thrilling for me."

She's a big fan of the runner's high

If you've ever exercised because you knew you'd feel better afterward, this is for you: "I started from a place of, 'I'm so annoyed I have to do this.' It was the last thing I wanted to do. When it became something that actually gave me pleasure, I was shocked," she explained. "Also, endorphins are real. You run with someone for an hour, you feel pretty good. Running for an hour does not make you feel worse."

More: Carrie Underwood's fitness line is legit and so it's message

She exercises for her overall well-being, not to look skinny

Like so many of us, Lena didn't start from a place of always loving her body but fitness helped her discover a new part of herself. "My relationship with my body is constantly evolving. I'm going to be 30 next year. I had to learn, as you age, you have to move. You have to move so you don't die. You have to move so your brain doesn't atrophy. You have to move so that you look a little bit like a person that you might want to be. There are a thousand reasons why exercise is important, and I've had to find ways to make it sexy for myself," she said. Then she added, "It made me incredibly happy when so many women connected to that idea of getting into it with your body when maybe that's not what's natural for you."

Well, we can say she definitely inspired us! Keep running and rocking those crop tops, Lena — we'll be right behind you.
