Zooey Deschanel's Emmys nail art is adorably pink

$

There was the tuxedo mani she sported to the 2012 Golden Globes (nothing short of incredible, right?), of course. And who can forget that cool cinema-themed nail art she wore to the show the following year? We could go on and on, but we know you want to see her latest work of nail art.

Tom Bachik Tweet about Zooey Deschanel nails

At last night's Emmys, Zooey showed up looking stunning in a gorgeous hot pink, strapless gown and metallic pumps, and her mani wasn't too shabby either. To go along with her flirty beauty look (fun retro curls and a pretty pout), Zooey's nail artist, Tom Bachik for L’Oréal Paris, went for a simple yet totally chic mani with a touch of personality.

He shared his inspiration for the look with SheKnows: "Zooey is sporting a super-hot pink dress, so I wanted to create a simple and classic look, playing up the tone-on-tone style. We wanted her nails to be clean and traditional, but with a fun, modern twist. I loved the idea of a reverse moon look on her. It's architectural, straight and very sleek." We have to agree. Lucky for you, we got Tom to share the step-by-step process for channeling Zooey's classy mani. Have fun, ladies!

Get the look

  1. Start off by polishing each nail with a baby pink color, such as L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Polish in I Pink I'm in Love.
  2. Next, place electric pink nail art tape about 3/4 of the way down the nail in a horizontal line.
  3. Make sure your look lasts by sealing it in with L’Oréal Paris Top of the Line Top Coat ($6).
  4. For an extra touch of shine and moisture, add a few drops of L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Glow Renewal Facial Oil directly onto nails and cuticles.

Woman pays $150,000 to look like her cartoon caricature (VIDEO)

$

Krystina Butel, 30, has spent the last 15 years and over $150,000 on beauty treatments and surgery so she can resemble a caricature someone drew of her while she was on vacation. Since that time, she has had five breast enhancements, Botox, lip injections and makeup tattooing, and has more ideas in mind to complete her plan to look like this idealized version of herself.

First of all, I do find it really creepy that a caricature artist drew a 15-year-old girl so provocatively — she appears to be topless, with long hair barely covering her giant boobs. The swim ring she's wearing around her waist, which features a turtle, is looking up at her with love (lust?) in his eyes and hearts blooming from his noggin.

Butel didn't find it creepy, though (and apparently her parents didn't, either). She says that she has used this caricature as a road map of sorts for building a new version of herself. When she first saw it, she claimed that she was jealous of how glamorous it looked.

Standards of beauty are formed throughout our culture in many ways, with media playing a big part — and who's to say that an impressionable teenage girl can't be swayed by what an artist saw as her most interesting features?

She's not alone in the extremes she's going through in order to attain this idealized beauty. And while celebrities are famous for customizing their bodies, even in massively painful ways, it's not limited to the wealthy. Should we judge this woman for internalizing her own ideal and using her own money to bring it to life? I don't think so.

Krystina Butel via Facebook

Krystina Butel via Facebook

The decidedly unique role model Butel is using is sure to turn heads, and she does resemble the original art — overdrawn, exaggerated and larger than life. She has even incorporated the hearts from the drawing with tattooed heart-shaped areolas, which I honestly find to be pretty cute. And even though I am not interested in pursuing plastic surgery myself, that is no reason to badmouth Butel.

What one person finds beautiful, another does not, and while there are some pretty typical beauty standards that many will agree to, this goes to show that not everyone is on the same page. While Butel may spend thousands more dollars and may not ever reach her perfect ideal, it's her choice so I can't really blame her for trying.

Why gender-bending hairstyles are good for feminism

$

0

I love it. Similar to the strict ideas of what makes women beautiful and feminine, men have a rigid form for what masculinity should be. Flip through a hairstylist's book for "men's haircuts" and it's pretty limited — a little shorter on the sides, rarely the benefit of highlights or color and movement beyond this becomes a point of discussion. For women, we've got highlights and lowlights, bobs, A-lines, layers, razoring, texturizing — you get the point. Men have little room for personal hair expression, particularly straight men.

If we open up the doors for men to play with their hairstyles without it being immediately feminized or niche, it's one more step toward balancing the scales for self-expression between men and women. I think we're mostly over saying that women with pixie cuts look like dudes — we should also let men have Katniss braids without saying they look like girls.

Not to mention, think of how many more friends you'll have who can help you get ready in the morning or for a night out.

As with most things in feminism, allowing for these things benefits both genders. Some hair trends I hope men start adopting (mostly for my own personal gain):

  • Curling
  • Braiding
  • Straightening
  • Blow outs (or even blow drying, which I can't even master)
  • The perfect top knot
  • Whatever this hairstyle is

Please & thank you!

Laverne Cox almost quit acting before OITNB role (VIDEO)

Orange Is the New Black cast glammed out for the 2014 Primetime Emmys >>

After gushing about her debut appearance at the awards ceremony, Cox told us that her road to success almost didn't happen. "In 2011, I had done, like, seven independent films. I was like 'Good. Things were picking up. I'm making progress,'" she said. Unfortunately, her goals of locking in a role on a series the year afterwards didn't pan out, leading the actress to contemplate quitting acting altogether.

Even if Cox didn't continue to pursue her acting aspirations, the Orange Is the New Black actress says that she still had a backup plan. "I was talking to a friend and she had just gone back to grad school and I'm like, 'Maybe it's time to go back to grad school,'" she confessed. "I had got all the materials for the GRE and my friend, who just finished with grad school, sold them to me at a discount."

OITNB showdown: Which cast member is your pick for best dressed? >>

Despite her nudges toward education, Cox tells SheKnows that her passion for acting prompted some hesitation on tackling grad school. Shortly afterwards, she would begin to submit herself for gigs and eventually land the role of Sophia Burset from the hit Netflix show. It doesn't look like the show's success is stopping anytime soon, either. Back in May, Laura Prepon broke the news that the show had been renewed for a third season.

Bad boy Bieber gets in a brawl at Dave and Buster's

Not long ago Justin Bieber and Orlando Bloom got into an altercation in Ibiza, Spain, after Bieber made unwanted comments about the British star's ex-wife Miranda Kerr, and now he's allegedly managed to find another fight, this time at arcade and sports bar Dave & Buster's.

Orlando Bloom throws a punch at bad boy Bieber >>

Apparently Bieber and on-again, off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez were enjoying a night out together on Monday at the Hollywood branch of the bar when a fan angered the pop star by trying to take a snap of him.

According to TMZ, the "Never Say Never" hit maker lunged at the man and tried to grab his phone, presumably to try to delete the pics. Does this ring a bell? Bieber was previously under investigation for attempted robbery when he snatched a woman's cell phone at a batting cage in Los Angeles, California, after she allegedly took pictures of him.

Justin Bieber shaves off his teeny mustache in clip (VIDEO) >>

Apparently, this time around Bieber's security managed to hold him back and he never actually made contact with the fan, yet the angry man still wants to press charges, and this is bad news for the star.

Bad boy Biebs is already on probation stemming from his egging case and he could now find himself in jail if found guilty of one of several potential charges including attempted battery, attempted theft and attempted robbery, TMZ reports.

Are Selena and the Biebs back together — again? >>

However, the Daily Mail says that there's no problem here and a police spokesperson revealed to them that there are no charges and it was a "big lot of nothing."

"There's been no fight, no scuffle and no crime occurred," the publication reports.

Oh Justin, what will you make headlines for next?

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland and her longtime beau split

The Modern Family star appeared at the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards without a date on Monday night and it has now been reported that she and her beau apparently decided to call time on their relationship because it just wasn't working, Us Weekly reports.

Sarah Hyland rocks a crop top to the Emmys >>

"Sarah's doing fine. It didn't work out," a source revealed to the mag. "She's young. They decided they would be better off as friends."

And although the beauty was dateless to the 2014 Emmys, she and her Modern Family family had plenty to celebrate because the show took home the gong for Outstanding Comedy Series again.

Hyland and Prokop first began their relationship after meeting at an audition for High School Musical 3: Senior Year in 2008. And things looked to be pretty serious at one point, because they lived together and shared an adorable pet dog, Barkley Bixby.

VIDEO: Sarah Hyland is a fan of 13-year-old Kiernan Shipka >>

In fact, the former couple often looked loved up when spotted out together and there was much speculation as to when an engagement would occur. The Geek Charming actress even gushed about her man during an interview with E! News, referring to herself as "practically married," to Prokop and saying, "We have a dog and live together, so I'm OK with that."

Oh, well, at least Hyland still looks happy, as she was all smiles on the night of the Emmys and she stunned in a Christian Siriano crop-top-and-full-skirt combo.

Teyonah Parris' heart-wrenching journey before Mad Men

We asked Teyonah Parris — known for playing Dawn, Don Draper's secretary on Mad Men — if she used to dream about being at awards shows as a kid.

"I would sit there... and just stare at the awards: the Tonys, the Emmys, Oscars, all of it! Like a lot of little girls, I had this dream in my spirit and in my soul to tell other people's stories and I'm so blessed to be able to walk that out and be here, at this moment."

Love it or hate it: Lena Dunham wears something pink and poofy to the 2014 Emmys >>

We asked her about her own personal journey and if she ever considered giving up acting.

"At any point or at every other point along the way? In this industry, you get told no so much. I remember moving to Los Angeles, this was maybe three years ago, and having the hooptie car and not knowing if I would make it to an audition. Staying on a twin-sized bed and sharing a room with my 12-year-old cousin because I had to come to LA and I had to give this a try.

"To be where I am now, I'm so grateful and I don't take it lightly or for granted that I'm here. And also to be here with my peers! There are some girls here that I went to high school with, to college with.

"Danielle Brooks from Orange Is the New Black, and Samira Wiley. I went to high school in Greenville, South Carolina, with Danielle. Samira, Danielle and I were all at the Juilliard School together. So to grind in those hallways, in those windowless rooms — it's so hard to fight to get the training we desired and to be here together and all nominated for our respective shows — it's amazing."

We wanted to know what kept Parris motivated. "I had a teacher in high school who said, 'This isn't for you, you should probably look into other avenues.' That was the first time I had ever experienced that level of rejection. My stomach sank and I went to cry to my mother and my dad, and they said, 'Get yourself together, pick yourself up and keep moving. Who is he? God is the only one to tell you where to move and how to move forward in this world and that man doesn't have any say over your destiny.' It's hard as a young person hearing that. But, by the grace of God, I picked myself up and I kept going."

We asked Parris if she ever contacted the naysayer to make sure he knew he was dead wrong. Watch our video to find out what she had to say.

Miley Cyrus' homeless VMAs date is a wanted man

The world was touched by Jesse Helt's emotional acceptance speech, in which he addressed the number of homeless youths living on the streets of the U.S. However, it turns out that Helt is a wanted man.

Emotional Miley Cyrus sends homeless youth to accept VMA >>

Apparently Helt is on the run from police after he broke probation, following a failed drugs test.

According to the Daily Mail's MailOnline, Helt told them that he is looking forward to heading home to Oregon to see his mother, but he may also face jail time because in 2011, a judge issued a warrant for his arrest for repeatedly violating the terms of his probation.

Helt has been arrested before. He previously spent 30 days in county jail after he broke into the home of a man who he claimed had sold "bad marijuana" to him. In addition to his time in county jail, he was placed on supervised probation for 12 months, fined $572 and ordered to pay restitution.

Miley Cyrus vows at the VMAs that her twerking days are behind her >>

Helt's troubles don't end there. In February 2012, he made the Most Wanted List for Polk County, Oregon. He was listed as No. 2 on the list for first-degree trespass, the MailOnline reports.

But now he's headed home. Helt apparently boarded an Alaska Airlines flight from Los Angeles International Airport on Monday night to go back home — an economy-class trip which was allegedly paid for by Miley Cyrus.

"I miss my mom. I haven't seen her in three years," Helt confessed to the MailOnline. "I've been suffering since I was the age of 13, but I’m glad to be back home," he added.

Frosty Miley Cyrus is still holding a grudge against Ed Sheeran >>

Helt's mom Linda Helt also commented on her son's troubles, saying, "Jesse's had ups and downs like anybody else... He didn't wanna give up and run on home to Mommy, but only he knows the reasons; that's for him to say.

"He wanted to be in Los Angeles and he had opportunities and he took them, but you know, he's had his ups and downs like anybody else. It was his choice. He was always welcome, he could always come back any time. If he needed help, I'd help him. We help one another," she added.

15 Crazy-genius life hacks for dog owners

1. DIY food-stuffed tennis ball chew toy

You can create your own food-stuffed dog chew to keep your little guy busy and anxiety-free while you're at work by carefully cutting a 1- to 1-1/2-inch hole in an old tennis ball. Then just fill the ball with everything from dog treats to peanut butter and cheese.

2. Carabiner security

Carabiner security

A carabiner is a metal clamp with a spring-loaded gate used by mountain climbers and in other safety systems to quickly but securely get a firm hold. Put the carabiner around the loop of your dog's leash when you go out, and you can easily secure it to any stationary object. You can also use it to connect multiple leashes to walk all your dogs at once.

3. Trick toothbrush

If your pooch resists regular dental cleanings, spread a little enzymatic doggie toothpaste onto a rope toy or chewy bone toy (or similar) and let it go to town.

4. Dog hair-free carpet

Use a squeegee to remove dog hair from the carpet before vacuuming. It's more effective and keeps dog hair from clogging your vacuum's rollers. It also works in your car.

5. Couch dog-hair grabber

Wet a rubber or latex glove, and use it to pick up the dog hair left on upholstery.

6. Dog food canister

Dog food canister

Dog food is easier to dispense if you store it in a large plastic pitcher or cereal container with an airtight lid, like this one from Buddeez (SpaceSavers, $6)

7. Semi-destructible stuffed toy

Semi-destructible stuffed toy

If your fur baby has a habit of ripping apart stuffed animals, use a Hol-ee Roller Ball stuffed with a treat surrounded by scraps of fabric. Your dog will spend all day yanking out the fabric to get to the treat, and you can just re-stuff it for next time, and your only extra expense is dog treats.

8. DIY flea and tick removers

Ticks are easier to remove if you dab them with a swab soaked in liquid dish soap. For fleas, mix one part each of Dawn and vinegar with four parts of warm water. Massage it in; let your dog sit in water for about five minutes. The fleas should float to the top of the water and die.

9. Storm chaser

If your dog flips out during thunderstorms, the problem may be a negative reaction to the static buildup in its fur. Rub it down with a dryer sheet to see if that helps.

10. Teeth trouble food options

If your dog has failing teeth, mix a little chicken broth into its food and nuke it for 30 seconds. When your pooch is good, treat it to some homemade easy-to-chew treats.

11. Shower-caddy storage

Shower-caddy storage

Shower caddies aren't just for the shower. Hang one in the closet or garage, and you can store extra dog treats, care products and more in the shelves and hang leashes, harnesses and rain gear on the pegs. Depending on where you put it, you may need to be creative with installation, but try this InterDesign stainless steel model with deep, adjustable baskets. (Organize-It, $90)

12. Pool party

If your dog's a water hound (pun intended), fill an inflatable pool with cool water on hot days and stock it with plenty of rubber duckies and other fun chew toys.

13. DIY doggie stain and odor remover

While you should always test DIY products in inconspicuous places first, we like this idea. Mix 1 cup of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with 2 teaspoons of mild liquid dish soap. For urine stains, mop up the liquid before beginning. Sprinkle the area liberally with baking soda, and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Then use your liquid to scrub the baking soda into the fibers with a bristled brush. Let it dry, then vacuum it up.

14. Doggie scratching post?

Doggie scratching post?

If your dog's a scratcher or digger, it might enjoy playing with a homemade toy it's allowed to scratch all it wants (no yelling from Mama). Take a plank of wood and glue on some sandpaper of varying coarseness… at least two. Stand it upright if your dog prefers, and let it scratch away. Just like an emery board.

15. Homemade pill pockets

Homemade pill pockets

If you have one of those dogs that turns its nose up at vital medicine, trick it with a homemade pill pocket. Just mix peanut butter, milk and flour and roll it into balls, stabbing them with the blunt end of a chopstick to create the pockets. Store them in the fridge or freezer. I like to use crunchy peanut butter because my dog is less likely to detect the pill.

If you're worried your pup will get suspicious that it suffers certain side effects each time, you can just use them as regular treats sometimes, too.

Aaron Paul's Emmys speech crashes Kind Campaign website

He said, "And to my wife, my god, thank you for marrying me. Thank you for dedicating your life to spread kindness across the world. We all appreciate it. If you guys don't know what she does, look up 'Kind Campaign.' Do yourself and your children a favor. Kind Campaign."

Sarah Silverman took liquid pot to the Emmy Awards >>

That message sent thousands of people scurrying to the internet to check out the charity, which eventually crashed the website on Emmys night.

Their mission statement at Kind Campaign is simple. The website states, "Kind Campaign is an internationally recognized movement, documentary and school program based upon the powerful belief in KINDness that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl 'crime.'"

Parsekian and her Pepperdine University classmate Molly Thompson started the movement in February 2009 after being victims of female bullying. Together, they created the documentary Finding Kind to expose the issue of girl-on-girl violence.

Paul's wife told the News-Press in 2009 how her own experiences in middle school were dangerous to her physical and mental health.

Primetime Emmys: Melissa McCarthy tears up on the red carpet >>

She said, "I was tortured. I became scared to go to school, for the fear of what new tortuous experience they would put me through. My grades started to drop, I was scared to answer the phone, and finding places to hide on campus became a daily routine. Through this time I battled depression and thought about suicide frequently. I remember feeling worthless, ugly, stupid, and more than anything else, I felt like my world was over."

The Emmy winner has been tremendously supportive of his wife's endeavors. In 2013, he helped raised $1.8 million with a Breaking Bad finale fundraiser.

Parsekian continues to spread the word about the charity on social media and by visiting schools… and through her husband's award show acceptance speeches.

ABC has picked its next Bachelor and it's Chris Soules

Soules was competing with Emily Maynard's season finalist Arie Luyendyk Jr. for the coveted dating show spot and Us Weekly confirmed the farmer from Andi Dorfman's season was the one to nab it. Additionally, Luyendyk himself hinted at the news with a post on his Twitter account on Monday, Aug. 25.

Bachelorette Ashley Hebert has a baby on the way >>

"I'm not the Bachelor," he wrote. "Have fun on the farm people."

After an emotional exit from The Bachelorette during the semifinal episode, Soules quickly became even more liked by fans. The Iowa native took Dorfman's rejection super-graciously, even though he claimed he was in love with the Atlanta district attorney.

Dorfman explained how fond she was of Soules, but the romantic connection just wasn't there and she had to let him go without taking him into the overnight date.

Clare Crawley says rejection was a "blessing in disguise" >>

"I think it's a big deal to take someone in an overnight, whether or not you do anything," Dorfman said during The Bachelorette: The Men Tell All special. "Just the act of, like, spending the night with someone should mean something, and I think you should feel like you have a future with somebody if you're willing to spend the night with them."

Before the network chose to go with Soules, they were actually getting him and Luyendyk ready for the show by hiring trainers to get both of them in shape for the show. They both also had the packages they run at the beginning of the season shot and ready to go.

GIFs: 5 Reasons The Bachelor reminds us of Sixteen Candles >>

But ultimately, they went with Soules when producers felt he was the better choice. Luyendyk, however, was thankful to his fans for their support and didn't take his loss overly hard.

"It wasn't meant to be, and I'm OK with it," he said. "Happy I can move forward."

A Southern twist on a classic English cocktail, the Pimm's Cup

$
0
0

What makes a Pimm's Cup a Pimm's Cup is the use of, well, Pimm's liqueur, an English favorite found at any respectable liquor store. But what makes this Pimm's Cup a little sassier (with a few more "oh, bless your hearts!") is the addition of a Southern favorite — whiskey. More booze with the same level of class; the only thing you're missing is a floppy hat.

Southern-style Pimm's Cup recipe

Serves 2

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Pimm's No. 1 liqueur
  • 1/4 cup whiskey or bourbon (we used Maker's Mark)
  • 1-1/2 cups ice
  • 1 cava cava orange, sliced and quartered
  • 1/3 English cucumber, julienned
  • 1/2 apple, cut into thin slices
  • 3/4 cup ginger ale
  • 1/3 cup fresh mint leaves

Directions:

  1. In a large pitcher, mix the Pimm's No. 1 liqueur, whiskey, orange slices, apple slices and a few cucumber slices. Mix in some of the mint leaves. Let chill for about 10 minutes.
  2. Add in the ginger ale, and pour into 2 glasses filled with the ice cubes. Add a few more sprigs of fresh mint and a few extra slices of cucumber for garnish.

You need to bring your baby to the bar more often

$
0
0

Quite frankly, bars and babies are a match made in heaven. I took my oldest son to a bar with my husband when he was just 2 weeks old. We were new parents who were entirely overwhelmed and also going stir-crazy from being cooped up in the house for weeks — months when you include pregnancy. We just wanted to go out in public and be normal again.

I pumped some breast milk, packed the diaper bag for the first time and planned a few hours when my son would be fairly content between feeding and sleeping. We went to one of our favorite neighborhood breweries in the daytime to have a quick drink and an appetizer to relax. It went off without a hitch. I even posted a few pictures of the scandalous idea to Facebook. Hey, here’s my baby in a bar! He’s hitting the bottle already! Yuk yuk yuk.

In truth, non-smoking bars are excellent places to take a baby. Taylor Tepper describes in Time one of the great benefits of taking your infant to the bar with you, “You are better off eating at home and then going out for a pint or two. Bars are louder than restaurants, and the ambient noise will muffle your baby’s sobs. Also, beer is less expensive than dinner, which means you’ll minimize your sunk costs if you have to leave in a hurry.”

This is it in a nutshell, folks. You may think that you can brave a public outing with your tiny baby to a local restaurant, but you would be wrong. Most times, diners will glare at you when your baby fusses before you pop a bottle in his mouth. Don’t even get me started on what might happen if you whip out your boob to breastfeed at the table.

A bar in the daytime is relaxed and inviting. A bar during happy hour is full of cheerful patrons who might just buy your tired, stressed new parent self a drink. Save your babysitting money for another round.

Luxury residences: Odeon Tower Monaco

Luxury residences: Odeon Tower Monaco

The building, appropriately referred to as Odeon Tower (or Tour Odéon), is fast becoming known for having the most expensive penthouse in the world. Beginning its construction in 2009, the Tour Odéon is the first high-rise to go up in Monaco since the '80s and has taken five years to complete due to its construction during an economic downturn.

Residents aren't as excited about the suites as we are, considering the high-rise building is in the heart of the city and not exactly as pleasant to look at as it is to look from. However, this penthouse not only features ridiculously attractive architecture by Alexandre Giraldi, it symbolizes the true definition of Euro glam. It has a pool that you can access from an upper floor by using an awesome slide, and the structure is equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows that show off the beautiful city. With the high-rise stated to be the epitome of the "ultimate lifestyle," you'll definitely have to spend some big bucks to afford the ultimate lap of luxury, as penthouses are rumored to cost from $387 million to $440 million dollars.

I have just one question: Do the hot guy, amazing speedboat, stellar sports car and expensive jewels come with my penthouse purchase? If so, then sign me up (once I can secure the ginormous down payment).

Get ready to obsess over Little Caesars' new pretzel crust pizza

Little Caesars is beckoning masochists everywhere to try their new Soft Pretzel Crust Pepperoni Pizza, the chain's first limited-time offering in a decade, according to Businessweek.

They're following on the heels of other fast-food chains who've been cranking out dishes like the Wendy's Pretzel Pub Chicken Sandwich (sounds okay), Arby's Cheddar Pretzel Nuggets (not for the faint-of-heart), and Sonic Drive-In's Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog (woof).

Known mostly for their cheap pepperoni pizza and breadsticks, Little Caesars' venture into epic food mashup territory could have pizza lovers crying "Hail Caesar!" — but a failure could also signal the crumbling of an empire.

It's hard not to be a little leery of the $6 Soft Pretzel Crust Pepperoni Pizza, since the most innovative item to make the Little Caesars menu in the past decade is a deep dish pizza. But at the same time, if you cover almost anything in "creamy cheddar sauce" and four types of melted cheese, it'll probably be at least edible (though with the sodium from the salted pretzel crust and cheeses combined, you might want to keep 911 on speed dial while you're eating). And, let's be honest — if you're going to Little Caesars for dinner, "edible" is probably the most you're hoping to get out of your meal.

It could be worse. Imagine the horrors that might result if they attempted this ramen crust pizza, a bacon weave pizza, or (the horror!) cauliflower crust pizza. The sight of a fresh vegetable in the Little Caesars kitchen would probably incite a riot.

Will you be giving this twisted new dish a try? Or do you think it's best to stick with the classics?

Recycling your period blood — is it the next superfood?

Yes, women can and apparently do recycle their own uterine expulsions as plant food. Of course, if you've ever had a period in your life, you are already totally squicked out by this idea. Having a period sucks and the idea of doing anything besides flushing it down a toilet sounds completely nutty. And while we've all probably eaten something that was grown in soil treated with chicken manure, thinking about eating vagina blood food is just barf worthy.

However, go ahead and collect your period blood in a menstrual cup, dump it in a jar, and add it to the soil of the vegetables you hope to eat someday. According to Becca Grim, who did just that, the lettuce she grew from her own uterine goo was crisp and the soil was obviously healthy. She recommends creating a "blood tea" out of one part period blood and nine parts water.

However, I must ask, would it be any different from using any other fertilizer? Doubtful. The same micronutrients can be added to your soil using the fertilizers mentioned above — blood meal and composted vegetable matter or animal feces. Using period blood isn't really any healthier for your plants — or you — than other organic fertilizers. So what's the advantage?

Using something that you created yourself — and in your pants, to boot — that helps your food or plants grow better is actually kind of cool. To turn something that we all loathe into something usable and even edible is, can I say it? Magical.

Although I do have to wonder — is it tough to eat?

South Korean female bodybuilders are challenging their country's beauty ideals

However, brave South Korean female bodybuilders are daring to break that well-established mold. The BBC just profiled one, Jeong Yeon Soon, who began strengthening her body after seeing photos of the very toned Madonna. Jeong Yeon Soon was a former beauty queen, who suddenly realized being happy and healthy was much more important than fitting the cultural ideal of beauty she'd come to know so well.

That doesn't mean her journey is easy now, though. She's on a five-times-daily, chicken-potatoes-veggie diet, often in the form of hearty shakes. Soon says her lifestyle is hard for others to understand, and it's hard for her to make friends and go out on dates. In a country where women will often undergo full-body liposuction — even a procedure to remove muscles in the calves so legs appear smaller — to achieve an ideal of beauty, Soon's muscular physique has raised some eyebrows. "People say, 'Oh, what's that? Women should be feminine and small.' They say, 'She must be transgendered.' I heard that!" Soon confessed in her interview.

It's always hard when you're blazing a trail yourself, so I feel for Soon. It must be hard to get the stares (and even disapproval) of those who don't necessarily understand or feel comfortable with what you're trying to do. But I'm also so proud to see her take this road. Trying to change the literal structure and stature of your body to be more "delicate," like many South Korean women are expected to do, is ludicrous. It's not natural. It's not sustainable. And ultimately it's not healthy, from both a physical and psychological perspective.

Like Soon, we need more women all over the globe to opt for being strong, fit and healthy over whatever bodily form our culture's currently glorifying. If we can all work on being our happiest, healthiest selves, we'll naturally redefine what it means to be beautiful.

Charcoal as teeth whitener — we put it to the test

In case you haven't seen it, activated charcoal powder is black as night, so applying it to tooth enamel for a whitening treatment seems counterproductive. I'm willing to admit, though, that I didn't go to dental school and I might not know everything, so I submitted my skepticism to Dr. Joseph Banker of Creative Dental Care so he could set me straight.

The activated charcoal method

"The tiny granules of activated charcoal are extremely porous and very effective in binding certain materials to their surface," Banker explained. Apparently, charcoal granules can pull the tannins found in coffee, tea and red wine from teeth, thereby reducing the appearance of stains in just one use. Unlike peroxide whitening products, however, charcoal only removes surface stains, so it's not helpful if your enamel is discolored.

If you want to give activated charcoal a try, Banker says the process is simple. First, head to your local pharmacy to pick out activated charcoal capsules. Break one open, and mix with a few drops of water. Apply the mixture to your teeth with a toothbrush, and let it sit for two minutes before rinsing. "Just don't brush with the charcoal, as the abrasiveness can damage your teeth or gums," Banker cautioned. He also added that you shouldn't try the treatment if you've taken medication within the last few hours.

Results are in, and they're mixed

Charcoal teeth cleaning

Of course, I simply had to try Banker's treatment for myself. So, how'd it go?

It took a while to rinse the charcoal out of my mouth to view my results, and I wasn't exactly blown away. My teeth looked about the same — which is to say, "yellowing and lackluster" — both before and after treatment. However, I noticed that the spaces between my teeth looked cleaner and brighter than before. In other words, the charcoal treatment was good for a minor adjustment but certainly didn't produce a whitening overhaul.

On another note, guys, keep your paper towels handy if you use activated charcoal. This was one of the messiest home beauty treatments I've ever tried, and I'm sure it didn't help that I was trying to snap selfies while drooling black powder. It also didn't help that my daughter found one on the floor and thought it was a skittle. Whatever, don't judge me.
