Everything you need to know about Common Core

Understanding Common Core

Common Core is the new set of academic standards in math, English and language arts for kindergarten through twelfth grade. With every grade level comes a list of what the child should be expected to comprehend by the end of that year. While many parents may start sweating about the concept of Common Core standards because, in many cases, they are more rigorous than previous standards, Pearl Chang Esau, CEO of Expect More Arizona, assures us that they are designed to better prepare our kids for the ultimate goal — college and career readiness — via a focus on critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication skills.

How to help your teen choose his path after high school >>

Why the new standards are better

She says, "Arizona teachers have been improving their teaching practices to go deeper to help their students understand concepts and apply them to real-life situations." And Arizona is not alone. Forty-five other states have also implemented Common Core standards as well because they allow for fewer yet clearer expectations for each grade level, encouraging the teacher's ability to further develop each concept in the classroom and ultimately ensuring that all the children in a classroom master a lesson before moving on to the next.

The parent's role

Esau says that reading to your child on a regular basis is the number one way you can prepare a child who has yet to enter school. Using the principles of the Common Core standards, she also advises implementing real-world applications such as talking with your kids about daily experiences and making connections between their experiences and things they read in books or see on their favorite television shows.

Are school reading programs too structured? >>

Esau adds that striking up a partnership with your child's teacher to help your child is a good way to start out the school year. Ask for an ongoing assessment, as well as support materials for any skill gaps your child may be experiencing so you can help your child at home.

She suggests asking your child's teacher the following questions:

  • What are the most important topics my child will be learning this year?
  • Can I review an example of my child's work? Is this example satisfactory? How can it be improved?
  • Is my child on track to be successful in this class? Is he or she prepared for next year, for college and a career?
  • What resources are available if my child needs additional help or wants to learn more about a subject?

She notes, "A parent needs to know if a child is ahead or falling behind and challenge them accordingly. Don't wait until the end of the year. The farther your child falls behind, the more he could be at risk for having to repeat the grade."

Kirk Cameron proudly wears the Christian actor label

In an interview with Fox411, the former Growing Pains star explained, "I think eventually if people are thoughtful you start asking grown-up questions like, 'How did the world get started? Where did we come from? Where are we going? Why are we here?' And I guess when I, as a child, I just sort of had blind faith in the fairy tale that the way we got here was from goo to the zoo to you. I finally said, 'That doesn't sound right,' and someone took me to church and kind of opened my eyes to what I believe is the truth about who we are and why we're here, and so when I was about 18 years old I wanted to start living my life in a way that said thank you to the way God made me."

Now that he's moved into the role of producer and star of Christian-themed films, he's proud to be called a Christian actor.

"I love God — I'm a Christian, but the films that I make... are really about themes that I think resonate in people's hearts; at least they do in my own family," he said. "So I'm always going to make movies that I believe in, that I can give 100 percent to, that I think are going to be offering people something good."

Hollywood has not shared his enthusiasm for Christianity and beliefs on gay marriage. He often finds himself a target of negative press when he expresses his controversial opinions, but Cameron feels like he has a purpose in the public eye.

The Mercy Rule star revealed, "I think that when anyone is in the spotlight... you're always going to be held to a higher standard — and we should be held to a higher standard because we're influencing more people than others might be. With the privilege of a platform comes great responsibility... [We've] got to be careful with what we say and how we say it, and everything should be seasoned with grace — and while I certainly don't do that perfectly, I strive to do it increasingly."

McDonald's mozzarella sticks are a terrible, tasty idea

The mozzarella stick is a near-perfect food item. Gooey mozzarella coated with crispy, golden-brown breading in a convenient stick form, dipped in sweet, tart, savory marinara... But would you really trust McDonald's with such precious foodstuff?

McDonald's is ostensibly a burger joint, but if you've ever had one of its meals, then you probably know the chain can barely get that right (see mysterious gray burger meat, lifeless lettuce and spongy, flavorless buns). So why bother attempting one of the holiest of all cheesy fried foods in the known universe? Probably because they know that if there's one thing that can get in the way of rational thinking, it's fried cheese.

Tweet about: Mozzarella dippers from McDonalds

Tweet about: Mozzarella dippers from McDonalds

"Mozzarella Dippers" have been previously available in the U.K., coming three to an order and served with a "salsa dip." The chain is now testing the sticks stateside, in select New Jersey, New York and Connecticut locations, according to Chicago Business.

Will I try McDonald's mozzarella sticks? Probably. Will I regret every second of it? Most likely. But will the irresistible pull of deep-fried, melty mozz lead us, zombielike, toward the golden arches when we're hit with a craving at 1 a.m. and have nowhere else to turn? Yes, my friends. The answer is, sadly, yes.

While most kitchen cabinets are made of laminate or particle board, the custom cabinets featured in this kitchen designed by Ben Riddering were manufactured from reclaimed French oak. Made to have a modern appeal with a rustic twist, this kitchen was built to fit the homeowner's style specifications. The home is in Arroyo Grande, California, a town with a lot of history and unique architectural design, which fits the house to a T.

The teal stands out nicely with the wood design and stainless steel appliances, making the home an awesome blend of luxury and modern-day splendor. One would think they're staying in a wooden cabin rather than on the coast of central California.

The kitchen's designer, Bed Riddering, worked as a furniture builder before opening his own studio in 2008. While he still designs unique reclaimed furniture, he also does custom concepts, as displayed in this space. Utilizing as many reclaimed resources as he can, Ben tries to also use locally found resources. The amount used in each product depends on the home's design and what is available to him. Being a very humble man, he attributes his design abilities and creativity to God.

The results were super-amazing and fun.

First up, we asked MTV host and comedian Yassir Lester about the lyric line to Pharrell Williams' "Happy" that says, "Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof."

2014 MTV VMA winners: The complete list >>

"To me it means, be open, be free, explore yourself, explore your body and your surroundings," Lester said. "Build that plane that you've been working on and learn to fly."

For Taylor Swift's "Love Story," the line we picked was, "Because you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter and my daddy said stay away from Juliette." MTV's 10 On Top host Lenay Dunn said, "It definitely means that in a past life she was a dinosaur and dinosaurs should never adventure to the end of the word!"

Next was Teen Wolf's Arden Cho, who wasn't quite sure what "but every song is like gold teeth," from Lorde's "Royals," meant.

"I don't know... I never really thought about it," Cho laughed. "I think it's like that extra bling... showing off your, what's that called... your grill! Showing off how much money you got, yeah, maybe..."

What does it mean to "go ahead and go ham sandwich?" Katie Stevens of Faking It said that Jason Derulo and Snoop Dogg's lyrics to "Wiggle Wiggle" just mean to "go and have a ham sandwich..." Simple enough.

Lastly, Faking It's Michael Willett said that Miley Cyrus' words "party ain't nothing but a party, when you party every day, it ain't nothing but a party," from her "Love, Money, Party" single are "really deep and poetic." He added they certainly make him "question" his "morals and sense of reality."

Hottie James Marsden is a big drama nerd >>

This is one relationship rumor that we were really hoping was true, but unfortunately the pair is just good friends.

"He's just one of my best friends," the Masters of Sex star revealed of newly single Marsden to People at Showtime's Emmy Eve Soiree on Sunday. "He's one of my dearest friends."

Jennifer Lopez insists she doesn't whore around (VIDEO) >>

But then again, the Save the Date actress wouldn't give anything away when it comes to her personal life anyway.

"I wouldn't tell you anyway!" she said to the mag.

So Caplan may not have been enjoying Marsden as her date (and serious arm candy) for the forthcoming Emmy Awards, but she plans to hang out with her friends on her big night anyway. She is nominated for the first time for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as sexologist Virginia Johnson in Masters of Sex.

Masters of Sex star Lizzy Caplan says there's no hot romance in the cards >>

"I have a lot of friends coming to hang out. There will be food. And they will be drinking. I will probably get slightly annoyed and looking for a moment of quiet and solitude, which I will not get," she joked. "And in the car ride there, I will be very happy that all the people showed up to hang with me. It's awesome. The fact my friends want to come hang is really nice."

Congratulations to Caplan on her Emmy Nomination — we can't wait to see if she takes home the gold later tonight.

Trick your guests with cupcakes that look like rice bowls

$

The rice texture of the frosting is created by using a handheld potato ricer. Just squeeze and shake it over a cupcake in a bowl to make drops of icing that look like white rice. And if you'd rather fool someone with a bowl of fried rice, just add some yellow food coloring and a few assorted candies.

Bake or buy the correct size of cupcakes that will fit inside your rice bowls. My bowls were fairly large, so I needed jumbo cupcakes.

Rice bowl cakes

You can use store-bought or homemade buttercream frosting. Lightly frost the tops of the cupcakes so the frosting rice will stay in place when it's sprinkled on.

Rice bowl cakes

The frosting needs to be stiffer to go through the potato ricer. Crumble up an extra cupcake, and add some powdered sugar.

Rice bowl cakes

Test your frosting in your potato ricer. If it's too soft, then it won't sprinkle correctly. Mix in more powdered sugar if necessary. (Don't worry, it won't make the frosting taste too dry. Amazingly enough, it stays very moist.)

Rice bowl cakes

To get the frosting to sprinkle, shake your potato ricer. You can also use a knife to loosen the bits of frosting.

Rice bowl cakes

Use a toothpick to adjust the "rice" and fill in spots that need more coverage.

Rice bowl cakes

You can leave your rice plain or make fried rice by coloring the frosting and using candy as accents. I heated Starburst candy in the microwave for about 10 seconds to soften it before I tore it apart to make it look like bits of a fried egg, and added other candies as vegetables. You could also dust it with cocoa powder for a more realistic appearance.

Rice bowl cakes

Give someone a set of chopsticks, and watch them try to eat their rice bowl cake.

Rice bowl cakes

Rice bowl cakes

For some additional food-fooling fun, you can also fill a clean soy sauce bottle with caramel or chocolate sauce.

Rice bowl cakes

You can fool the eyes, but not the taste buds.

Rice bowl cakes

These delicious bowls of rice really take the cake.

Rice bowl cake recipe

Yields 4

Ingredients:

  • 5 vanilla cupcakes
  • 3 cups buttercream frosting
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • Yellow food coloring
  • 8 orange Life Savers Gummies
  • 15-20 green Sixlets candies
  • 4 yellow Starburst candies

Directions:

  1. Place 4 cupcakes inside rice bowls.
  2. Lightly frost the tops of the cupcakes with buttercream icing.
  3. Add the powdered sugar and 1 crumbled cupcake to the frosting, and mix well. (If you want to make "fried rice" instead of white rice, then add yellow food coloring at this point too.)
  4. Put some of the frosting mixture inside a potato ricer, and gently squeeze the handle until the frosting starts to come out.
  5. Shake the potato ricer, and let the bits of frosting that emerge fall off onto your cupcakes. You can also use a knife to cut the frosting bits from the ricer. Continue to squeeze, shake and sprinkle until your cupcake is mostly covered.
  6. Using a toothpick, arrange your bits of frosting rice around the bowl as desired.
  7. If making fried rice bowl cakes, add your candies to the top. Cut the orange Life Saver Gummies to look like bits of carrot. Add the green Sixlets candies to look like peas. And tear apart the yellow Starburst candies to look like flat bits of fried egg.

Dog plays pool

Essentially, this cute guy is the canine version of Tom Cruise in The Color of Money — there's a notion to give you pause (paws?) for thought.

It should also be noted that after sinking virtually every ball on the table, he shakes his opponent's hand. Clearly, he's a pretty good sport... and/or attended an excellent obedience school.

As you may know, in billiards lingo, a "pool shark" is someone who rules the table for hours on end. So, while we hate to do this just after Shark Week, this skilled pup proves that the idiom should be updated.

Our suggestion? Pool dog.

9 Secrets to being a happy parent

$

It only takes a look around the carpool lane to see that most modern parents are stressed out and unhappy because of sleep deprivation, marital trouble and money problems. How depressing. But University of Michigan researchers swear up and down that parents can find happiness while raising crazy kids by following just nine simple steps.

1. Be old

Be old | Sheknows.com

This is perhaps the simplest step of all. University of California Berkeley research states that parents 25 and younger have more stress when raising kids. Make sure that you are old but not too old, or your kids will hate you for that too.

2. Maintain eye contact during family dinner

Having regular family dinner is parenting 101. Up the ante by maintaining constant eye contact with your kids during family dinner so that they get the most out of it. This will also prepare them for awkward future dates.

3. Maintain eye contact during family game night

Family game night is just as important as family dinner, but rule No. 2 still applies. Don’t ever look away.

4. Take a vacation

Preferably without your kids. They’ll probably hate you for this in the long run, but it’s totally worth it.

5. Choose to be happy

Guess you can throw this entire list away because the secret to happy parenting is choosing happiness. Who knew?

6. But not too happy

But not too happy | Sheknows.com

Choose to be happy, but don’t expect your kids to make you happy. If you’re both happy at the same time, bonus.

7. Do everything on your to-do list

Psychology expert Christine Carter believes that this will make you feel accomplished and happy. It may also make you feel like your children’s slave, in which case you should refer to No. 5 as you spot wash piles of laundry and steam clean ketchup out of the carpet for the hundredth time.

8. Watch your baby smile

University of Michigan researchers found that parents are stressed about childhood obesity. Tackle this problem head-on by chasing your kids down the street after dinner every night. They will run faster if you don’t tell them why you are doing it.

5 Things to know about Donald Trump's daughter, Tiffany Trump >>

The feud dates back to the 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner when Meyers hosted the event. The former Saturday Night Live star made a joke about Trump's possible run for president.

He quipped, "Donald Trump has been saying that he will run for president as a Republican. Which is surprising, because I just assumed he was running as a joke."

Trump, who attended the event, wasn't too pleased to be the butt of Meyers' jokes. He sat stone-faced in the audience.

After the dinner, the New York Daily News spoke to the real estate mogul's spokesperson who responded with a statement, "Seth Meyers is a third-rate talent who performed very poorly at the Washington Correspondents' Dinner. He had marbles in his mouth and couldn't get the words out."

One person who does have faith in Meyers is the 2013 Emmy Awards host, Neil Patrick Harris. He told the New York periodical, "He's super funny and charming and handsome and he should be amazing. If he can play the White House Correspondents' Dinner, he'll be fine with the Real Housewives of Atlanta."

Now, let's hope Meyers makes a Trump joke tonight. It will only add fuel to the Twitter fire.

Your awesome ice bucket challenge video may not even matter

$

The #icebucketchallenge is a trending social media campaign created by The ALS Association to raise awareness and donations for ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease. The Ice Bucket Challenge has been a home-run viral hit, with a groundswell of supporters that include Ben Affleck and former President George W. Bush.

Just like it sounds, the Ice Bucket Challenge requires the participant to film and post a video of a bucket of ice water being dumped on their head via social media. Once the epically chilling video is complete, the participant nominates new challengers by tagging them in the post. They have 24 hours to film their own challenge video or donate to the cause. In most cases, participants happily do both.

At face value, this viral campaign seems ingenious. It has raised $42 million and counting for ALS. This is a marked increase from the $2 million raised last year. So what is The ALS Association going to do with this cold, hard cash? The money will go to medical research, but experts believe that social media donations may not be enough.

According to NBC News, "Anyone who thinks that money is going to cure ALS is just dreaming." This statement is utterly depressing if you have been one of the many people to publicly participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge with the hopes of making a change.

Yes, The ALS Association plans to donate millions to research. Yet President and CEO of The ALS Association Barbara Neuhaus states, "These flash-in-the pan things that will go away after a few months will not help ALS in the long run."

Don't demand your money back just yet. Your contributions and viral videos do matter — they just aren't enough to find an immediate ALS cure. Compared to the billions spent on medical research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), viral funds are sadly just a "drop in the bucket."

The good news is that astounding ALS awareness has been raised. You can still support ALS medical research by contacting your Congressman and petitioning to put a stop to NIH budget cuts. But before you post a cute viral video or pledge for a cause, it's important to know the facts.

The Ice Bucket Challenge won't cure ALS. It will raise public interest in medical research, for ALS and other serious conditions. Still, those suffering from the condition seem to be satisfied with the awareness the challenge has generated.

Hayden Panettiere shows off baby belly at the 2014 Emmys

Did the Emmys take it too far with Sofia Vergara bit, post-Beyoncé feminist performance?

$

0

To cap off the VMAs, Beyoncé took the stage for an epic 15-minute song medley. She performed "Flawless" as part of that medley, at which point she stood in front of a huge screen reading "FEMINIST." And, yes, looking every bit a feminist, and a fierce one at that.

2014 Primetime Emmy Awards: The complete list of winners >>

She also recited part of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's stirring speech about young girls and feminism (just as she does in the video for "Flawless"). At the end of the spirited performance, Jay Z — looking ever so proud and supportive — took the stage with the couple's adorable daughter, Blue Ivy, to present Queen Bey with the show's highest honor, the Vanguard Award.

You could practically hear the charge in the air — an electric current of pride and strength and power. The collective consciousness of badass women and the men who respect them.

Meanwhile, last night at the Emmys, the only thing you could hear when Television Academy chairman Bruce Rosenblum took the stage was a pin drop. Not because people were captivated by what he was saying but, rather, because he roped Sofia Vergara into a shtick that still has us scratching our heads.

I mean, really... what were they thinking?

Here's how it played out. Vergara pokes a little fun at the old American dream by joking that she had always dreamed growing up of coming to this country to... introduce the Academy chairman. Rosenblum then takes the stage, at which point the bit took a decidedly seedy turn.

Jimmy Kimmel takes the metro to the Emmys >>

After pointing out the tremendous impact television has had this year, Rosenblum asks the Colombian beauty to step up onto a spinning pedestal. And, let's be honest, nobody heard anything else Rosenblum said, aside from his parting words. "What truly matters is that we never forget that our success is based on always giving the viewer something compelling to watch."

Primetime Emmys: Sexist Sofia Vergara skit

Primetime Emmys: Sexist Sofia Vergara skit

Cue Twitter pandemonium. Everyone from Katie Couric to musicians Tegan and Sara chimed in to point out the seeming sexism of the skit.

For her part, Vergara insists it wasn't sexist. In fact, it was anything but. "I think it's absolutely the opposite [of sexist]. It means that somebody can be hot and also funny and make fun of herself," she told EW. Does she have a point?

Primetime Emmys: 9 Things Lena Dunham's hair looks like >>

Clearly, she wasn't offended by the skit. Rather, she claims that is part of feminism: the fact that women are now in on the joke, rather than the butt of it. But does complicity make sexism OK? Just because it didn't ruffle Vergara's feathers doesn't mean it didn't piss everyone else off. After all, she may have been dealt part of that hand, but it's not as though the rest of us were holding any cards.

Another argument to be made in Vergara's defense, however, could be that Beyoncé's performance also put her body on display in a way designed to call attention to it. Where does embracing one's feminist wiles cross the line from feminist to sexist? If you take the man out of the equation, would what Vergara did be nearly as offensive?

Still, in contrast to Beyoncé's VMAs performance, Vergara's Emmys skit feels like a throwback to the days when women weren't four-time Emmy and Golden Globe nominees (as she is) and were rather just "pretty faces."

OITNB showdown: Which cast member is your pick for best dressed? >>

Perhaps it is particularly frustrating to see this today, on national Women's Equality Day. Women have worked so hard to get to the point where we're taken seriously and where our roles carry the same weight — and often more — as our male counterparts. Aren't we doing ourselves a disservice if we let anyone marginalize that or use it as part of a cheap parlor trick?

Women like Beyoncé and Sofia Vergara deserve to be put on a pedestal because they are smart and funny and immeasurably talented — not so men can ogle their asses.

The garden cinema

We love the idea of pulling up a reclining lawn chair by the big screen and taking in our favorite shows in the midst of lush green grass, colorful flora and gorgeously tall trees. It's far better than long lines of moviegoers, exorbitantly priced junk food and inescapable darkness.

Polanco and Leyva both have Latin backgrounds and claim they are living their dreams by being portrayed on television representing their community and attending their first Emmys ever.

"It is a dream come true, I'm fangirling around a lot of people," Leyva said.

Polanco added that they've "had many moments of self-realization when we look at one another and say, 'Are we really here?'"

While breaking into the acting world has been an unbelievable and awesome goal they've both attained, Polanco and Leyva admit that being on a show like OITNB as Latina women is what has mattered most.

"It's more so the moment of us representing the Latinos," Polanco explained. "Looking to represent the women as curvacious as we are, you know, we're just trying to represent us in a very positive way and live our dream and influence many others and open the opportunities for many others as well."

The pair also said they are very touched by stories of other women who have been influenced by them in their journeys into the acting world in Tinseltown.

"Every time I hear a young woman in the business saying 'Thank you, I finally have someone I can relate to, I can look to, someone who looks like me,'" Leyva said. "I grew up in a time when there were very few Latina representation [sic] on television and in Hollywood."

The Spanish stars also revealed how during their career beginnings they were often told they were too heavy and/or too curvaceous, but then Jennifer Lopez came along and changed the mainstream view of body shapes.

"I think we're celebrating curves," Leyva added. "Women are supposed to have curves and be celebrated for that."
