Food trends through the ages and what to expect next

The 2000s are definitely the age of the foodie. But what foods were trendy when your mom was a kid? Or your grandma? Bon Appétit took a look at food trends through the ages, and you won't believe its findings.

The Roaring '20s: Enter the fruit cocktail

It seems Prohibition put a bit of a damper on the popular amuse-bouche of oysters with Champagne. Instead, creative hosts decided that if life gave them lemons, they'd make a fruit cocktail garnished with marshmallows or confectioners' sugar. It's probably best not to serve an aphrodisiac with an inhibition kicker before dinner anyway.

The Dirty '30s: Jell-O salad is born

The obvious solution to getting bored with fruit cocktails was clearly to mold Jell-O into fancy-schmancy shapes and dropping fruit, veggies, nuts and more into it. In fairness, entertainment was probably at a premium during the Great Depression, so a dessert that jiggled at least had some additional entertainment value.

The Fighting '40s: Order the Spa-a-a-am, order the Spa-a a-am

Quick! What happened on Dec. 7, 1941? The attack at Pearl Harbor marked the beginning of the U.S.'s involvement in World War II. What does this have to do with food trends? Everything. Spam was created as a convenient way to feed soldiers, but it also turned out to be pretty darn popular stateside.

The Nifty '50s: Casseroles are king

After WWII ended, the casserole became the go-to easy-to-prepare dish for the working gal and a fun way to experiment with new flavors for the ladies who chose to go back home.

The '60s: NASA-inspired edibles

Potato flakes, instant coffee and (rejoice!) Tang became all the rage during a decade when astronauts were the ultimate heroes.

That '70s Food: Fondue

Fondue has seen a slight resurgence in recent years, but it's hard to separate it from the images of shag carpet and lava lamps.

The "Me" '80s: Pasta salad

Pasta salads are a quick and easy side when a shoulder-pads-wearing working girl needs to bring one to the church picnic, especially with all the new dressing options.

The Networking '90s: Fat-free and fab

During the time when computer games replaced playing outside, it's no surprise the food focus was on things one could easily enjoy while helping Link rescue his Princess Zelda. Thus the boom in diet snack foods (remember Olestra?) and fun and flavorful drinks like Orbitz and Clearly Canadian.

The New Millennium

At the turn of the century, the excess of the previous decade led to a food revolution of the dietary kind. Atkins, Slim-Fast, the Cookie Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, the Chicken Soup Diet, South Beach, the Hollywood Diet and more were fad diets with varying levels of success (and health concerns) that took hold as celebs' flawless physiques continued to be the focus of now near-instantaneous internet news reports.

But a new movement also took hold: gourmet indulgence in the form of things like foams à la Marcel Vigneron, sushi, high-end beef cuts like Kobe and even organics and superfruits and superveggies.

In the second decade of the millennium, we really started experimenting. Bacon isn't just for breakfast anymore — sometimes it's for dessert. We've seen the rise of Sriracha sauce, gourmet cocktails, food truck food and ethnic and fusion concoctions, among others.

What's in store for 2014?

The National Restaurant Association has released a culinary forecast for 2014, and according to it, there's a lot in store for the gastronomically inclined.

10 Ways to lose the job before you're hired

Young female business professional on interview

Photo credit: Chris Ryan / Caiaimage / Getty images

Competition nowadays is fierce, and there are hundreds of people that could be applying for the same position. Before you walk into your next big interview, make sure you use the following tips to avoid losing the job before you’re hired.

1

"I got this."

Have you ever felt so confident about a position that you want to just walk into an interview and wing it? Think again. No matter how qualified you are for the job, not doing your homework on the company will show that you are not prepared. Career coach Jill MacFadyen points out that winging it by not researching the company or not practicing makes you look disinterested or lazy. She encourages interviewees to become familiar with the company's product.

2

"I hate wearing suits. I want to dress like myself."

Yes, your potential employer wants you to be authentic, but your appearance still matters, and first impressions say a lot. Whether you like to rock tank tops and flip flops or you prefer stilettos and dresses, you may have to adjust your everyday wear for the interview. You have to look the part to get the part. MacFadyen shares these dos and don’ts for interview attire and appearance.

 • Avoid smelling of cologne or cigarette smoke. One client, a smoker, just couldn’t land an interview until he had his interview outfit dry cleaned and kept in a closet separate from other clothes. He also didn’t smoke on the way to the interview.
 • Think twice before you layer on perfume. Cologne can be equally off-putting. The recruiter won’t tell you that this is why you didn’t proceed to the next round, but it could be the case, and you might never know.
 • If you have a pet, make sure that your interview clothing is free of hair and spots. It is nice to talk about your pets if the interviewer has pictures of his/her pets, but it's not nice to shed all over the office.
3

"How much am I getting paid again?"

Sure, you'll want to know how much you are getting paid, but don't bring up salary or benefits unless the interviewer talks about them first. Salaries are often talked about once an offer has been made. Check out sites, such as salary.com, to search and compare average salaries for the position in your area and use that knowledge to negotiate if you're offered the job. "Interviewees should never ask about salary or benefits. It makes them look greedy," says MacFadyen.

4

"I’m going to change the entire culture... and the workflow process. And the mission statement could use some work, right?"

Employers love ambition and want applicants to bring amazing ideas to the table, but being too demanding or aggressive can be off-putting. They want to know what you can contribute to the company, but they'll be turned off if you sound like you want to take over the company. On the other end of the spectrum, MacFadyen points out that being too relaxed or vague can work against applicants as well.

5

"I mean… I pretty much ran the entire company."

Most people tend to hype up their résumé by using action words such as "captivated" or "directed," but lying about your previous work experience and qualifications is a sure way to become the "ex" factor before you even make it to the second round. No matter how much you want to embellish, don't lie. If you feel you're not qualified and you're unsure of your abilities, choose to play up your strengths instead of fabricating reasons why you can do the job.

6

"I got along with everyone."

MacFadyen says it is important to adequately answer behavioral/situational questions during the interview. For example, when you are asked, “Tell me about a time you had trouble getting along with a co-worker,” it is best that you give more than a vague response.

"In a strictly behavioral interview you would fail if you merely replied that you get along with everyone. Your answer needs to include SITUATION — what happened, ACTION — what you did and RESULT — why was it good for the company or the customer."

7

"My former boss was a joke who didn't know how to do the job."

Maybe Miranda Priestly was an angel compared to your former boss, but the interview is not the time to share your feelings about your former boss' wrongdoings. Bad-mouthing your former employer to a prospective employer during an interview can definitely backfire. You don't want to come off as the "impossible to please or two-faced employee." MayFadyen advises job seekers to have a succinct reason why they left their prior job. This reason should not include blaming prior managers or companies.

8

"It would be nice to let someone know I'm waiting."

Be mindful of everyone you come in contact with as soon as you walk into the building, whether it's the CEO or the janitor. The way you interact with other employees within the company before you're hired is important, so refrain from giving the receptionist the side-eye.

"Being impolite to the receptionist or security guard or being impatient about having to wait for the interview is one way to lose the job before you start. As a recruiter, I always asked the receptionist what she thought of the interviewee."

9

"Nope. That’s all I have."

"Not having questions to ask the interviewer makes the interviewee look disinterested," says MacFadyen. "Let your interviewer know that you are interested by asking questions, such as "What do you enjoy most about the company?" or "What is the culture of the company?"

10

"Get the ____ out of here."

Are you and the interviewer laughing, telling stories and having a good time? Even if it feels like you’re talking to an old friend rather than an employer, don’t forget that you're in an interview. MacFadyen advises interviewees to always keep it professional and avoid using swear words.

Tips from Jill MacFadyen

 • When asked the infamous "Tell me about yourself?" question, avoid looking at your résumé. Just tell them.
 • Don't bring messy copies of your résumé. (Instead bring a neat portfolio with several copies of your résumé to hand to anyone who interviews you.)
 • Make sure you answer “Why do you want to work for our company?” with energy and enthusiasm.
 • Don't be on time for the interview — be early.

This is what Nicole Richie wore for the AOL Upfronts to announce another season of her online show #CandidlyNicole, and we've got to be completely candid and up front: We're not loving this look. From her lilac locks to the jingleball-embellished dress, Nicole made a misstep.

We know purple streaks are a trend but this hue makes the 32-year-old mom of two look like an alien. After we finally stopped staring at her hair, we see she chose a dress that looks like a studded punk rock diaper with that strange pointed piece in front. It's actually by Anthony Vaccarello from his Spring 2014 collection, but seems like something better suited as a cute onesie for her son Sparrow. Just add a snap between the legs and voila.

The final verdict? We expect more from fashionista Nicole, but hopefully she'll redeem herself at the next red carpet event. Her Jimmy Choo rope stiletto sandals are super sexy though, so she can keep those around.

Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood at the Time 100 Most Influential gala

Carrie Underwood couldn't decide if she wanted to go girlie or gothic for the Time 100 Most Influential gala in NYC, so she did both. For the swanky event, the country crooner donned a Claire Pettibone pastel gown that's got too much print going on for our taste.

There's already a pattern on the lilac bodice of the gown, along with a black mesh overlay, big flowers embroidered on top and a train. Is this her best evil stepsister look? The black overlay adds bulk to the look and clashes with the princess feel to the rest of the dress. We'd much prefer this frock without the unnecessary layer and giant floral accents.

The final verdict? We recommend that Carrie pick an aesthetic for the night and stick to it instead of trying to straddle the fence in this discombobulated dress. At least her romantic retro waves and soft, pretty makeup get the thumbs up from us.

5 Signs that James Franco needs to get back to work

Too much private time

So what are you going to do in the wee hours of the morning when you're a celebrity, and you are sweating profusely? You're going to pull a Geraldo Rivera and take — then post — a very unflattering, almost nude selfie.

James Franco slams critic after review: "Such a little b****" >>

James Franco has since removed this image from his Instagram account, but it leaves us wondering. Is sweating and poor decision-making in the middle of the night in any way linked to the abuse of substances one should not be abusing? Aren't cough syrup and weed to blame for at least half of Miley Cyrus' tacky career decisions? Maybe that is what is happening here.

Lying naked in bed

Dude! Get out of bed. Geez. Several of James Franco's Instagram shots are of him in bed — with his hands on his unmentionables. This guy needs some work — evidently his promotion schedule for the May 9 premiere of Palo Alto isn't that strenuous. Another Instagram selfie shows Franco shirtless, in bed, gnawing on an apple. We could probably excuse this behavior if Franco was a stoned college kid, but he's a 35-year-old, Academy Award-nominated actor.

Seth Rogen & James Franco Vogue spoof: "It had to be done" >>

Bromance with Keegan Allen

Franco's grudge match with gossip sites regarding his sexuality is nothing new. Last September, he posted pictures of holding a guy's hand and making out with him to make fun of Perez Hilton and Just Jared. In this attention-getting selfie (plus one), Franco is in bed (again), spooning with Keegan Allen. We'd like to belabor the point that Franco has a little too much free time on his hands, but some of us have to get back to work.

Players be playin'

In early April, Franco was busted after trying to hook up with a 17-year-old fan. That's not at all creepy. What's even funnier is Franco had the stones to go on Howard Stern and complain, "My dirty s*** gets put out internationally." Maybe Franco doesn't know how social media works. Perhaps he's oblivious to the fact that when he wakes up at 1 a.m. sweating, sticks his hand down his pants, takes a pic and posts it on Instagram that he is putting his dirty s*** out there internationally.

He called Lindsay Lohan delusional?

Franco "can't believe" he landed on Lindsay Lohan's list of guys she said she slept with (which she penned in rehab). He told Howard Stern the two hung out a couple of times and made out but that they definitely did not sleep together. Franco goes on to say, "I can't believe she put me on that list. She's so delusional." While few would waste time debating that point, Franco's recent social media behavior has us thinking the same thing about him.

It's finally here — a premiere date for Girl Meets World! The show was ordered by Disney more than a year ago, and will be back on the small screen on Friday, June 27 on the Disney Channel. However, verified viewers of WATCH Disney Channel will be able to see it as early as May 21.

INTERVIEW: Girl Meets World cast talks Boy Meets World >>

Girl Meets World will follow Cory and Topanga Matthews as they raise their daughter Riley, played by Rowan Blanchard.

Girl Meets World will continue Boy Meets World's story, "only this time from a tween girl's perspective", said Disney in a statement.

Riley grows up in Manhattan, and her dad, played by original star Ben Savage, will be her history teacher. Danielle Fishel is also reprising her character of Topanga. Girl Meets World will then debut in its regular timeslot on Friday, July 11.

Watch the trailer here.

Disney kids from the ‘90s will also be treated to a Boy Meets World marathon starting June 15.

Those eagerly awaiting the series premiere of Girl Meets World will also be able to see the Disney Channel original movie Zapped before the premiere on June 27. Zapped stars Zendaya, of Dancing With the Stars and Shake It Up fame.

Danielle Fishel marries much younger college sweetheart >>

Zapped is "the story of Zoey, a girl whose well-ordered life is up-ended when her mother remarries and she finds herself part of a family composed of rambunctious, chaotic — and most of all — messy boys — and a male dog, to boot," Disney explained. "She finds salvation in the unlikeliest of places when she unwittingly comes into possession of a smartphone app that magically controls boys."

Watch the trailer here.

It will be a big couple of months for Disney, and Girl Meets World and Zapped are helping kick off all the fun on June 27.

Jalapeño popper stuffed rolls

With each bite, you get the crispy outside, the creamy and cheesy inside and the kick from the jalapeño, just without the unnecessary deep-fried exterior. Oh, and if you're worried, don't be. I tried one of these with a cold beer, and let me tell you, they go even better together than the deep-fried version.

Jalapeño popper stuffed rolls

Jalapeño popper rolls recipe

Yields 8-10

Ingredients:

 • 1 package active dry yeast
 • 2 tablespoons sugar
 • 1/4 cup olive oil
 • 1/4 cup melted butter
 • 1 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
 • 3-1/2 cups bread flour
 • 1 cup crushed cracker crumbs
 • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
 • 1 tablespoon Italian season
 • Salt and pepper
 • 1 egg white

For the filling

 • 6 ounces cream cheese
 • 4 small jalapeños, seeded and chopped
 • 6 slices bacon, cooked and chopped
 • 1/3 cup cheddar cheese
 • Salt and pepper

Directions:

 1. In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, sugar, olive oil, butter and warm water. Let the mixture sit until foamy, about 10 minutes.
 2. Stir in the flour 1 cup at a time, and then stir until the mixture comes together.
 3. Place the dough on a floured surface, and with floured hands, knead until it's soft, smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, and cover it with a greased piece of saran wrap. Place the bowl in a warm spot, and let the dough rise until doubled in size, about 60 minutes.
 4. Punch the dough down slightly, and pull apart 8 equal-size balls. Roll each into a soft ball.
 5. In another bowl, mix together the cream cheese, jalapeños, bacon, salt, pepper and cheddar cheese until combined. Place about 1-1/2 to 2 tablespoons of filling into the center of each ball, and then gather up the sides, folding the opening over so it stays shut.
 6. Mix together the cracker crumbs, Parmesan and Italian seasoning. Roll the balls in the egg white, and then liberally coat them with the cracker crumbs.
 7. Grease a large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Place the balls seam side down about 1 inch apart. Bake for about 16 minutes or until golden brown.

Night weaning 101
Woman nursing at night | Sheknows.com
Photo credit: Ghislain & Marie David de Lossy/Vetta/Getty Images

Even after they are capable of sleeping through the night, toddlers can get into the habit of waking up at night to nurse. As you would expect, this can be hard on the moms they cherish, so getting a handle on night weaning is a goal of many.

What is night weaning?

Sleep when you have a baby is a precious commodity. It can seem to become even further out of reach if you have an older baby or toddler, who seems to be capable of going eight or more hours without nursing, but who continues to wake up at night to breastfeed. This is where night weaning comes in. You're not interested in weaning totally — just for the overnight hours.

When you're both ready

The first thing you should keep in mind is that not every child is ready to sleep through the night in the same time frame. This means that even if your first child slept through the night at 3 months, that doesn't necessarily mean that your next child will be ready to follow suit.

"It was a lot easier than I thought it would be."

However, by the end of the first year, many (if not most) babies are ready to move past night feedings, and by that time, most moms are really ready for them to. "I'm getting to the point of being so ready, but I feel like Sage isn't going to take it well and I'll probably end up going back on it," shares Tiffany, mom of one. "Sometimes it just feels like torture with the nipple pinching and teeth and fingernails. I wouldn't mind just getting a full night of sleep again, which I know will happen on its own eventually, but he seems like he's nursing more at night lately."

Steps for success

There are a few strategies that moms employ for night weaning. One method that is often successful is putting your child on a schedule so expertly they're not even aware they're on one. "I set an alarm for myself to go in his room before I knew he would wake up to nurse," Emily, mom of two, tells us. "He used to cry out every three hours like clockwork, so I would beat him to the punch of actually being in a routine of waking for it. Then each day for about a week I cut the feedings shorter and shorter. Then I would eliminate one of the feedings at a time. Eventually I stopped going in and he stopped crying for it. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be."

Other moms use the "nursies go to sleep" method, which is where you tell your little one that your breasts have gone night-night. Books such as Nursies When the Sun Shines can really help your child make the adjustment better. However, it can still be a difficult transition, and moms we spoke with tell us that you really have to hold your ground for success.

"I night weaned Ella at 19 months," shares Brittany, mom of one, who had several reasons for night weaning. "It was really trying. The first week she'd stand at the bed and cry. We stuck with it because of her brother due in June and she had upcoming dental work. It took about two full weeks for her to fully grasp it."

Other strategies

You'll also want to nurse your little one as much as possible during the day, particularly before bedtime, because if they're too distracted to nurse well during the day, they may try to make up for it at night. Also, if your child gets sick or you travel, you might find yourself needing to make exceptions to the no-nursing-at-night rule. Dr. Jay Gordon has a really in-depth method for gentle night weaning that many parents have found to be extremely valuable — check it out if you're interested.

And above all, when you set out to night wean, keep in mind that your little one might not be quite ready to give up nursing at night, or you might not be either — and that's OK. "We tried when she was younger, around 12 to 15 months, with no luck," remembers Kelly, mom of two. If your child doesn't cope well, you might consider trying again in a few months. Parker from Texas had a similar experience. "The first time we tried, it failed and I gave up because she just cried and cried for hours still after trying it for over a week," she remembers. "We tried it again probably six months later and it worked like a charm."

Even though it may seem like your child will always wake at night to nurse, she definitely won't. Try night weaning, and if it doesn't work out right now, try again later.

Gwen Stefani's "Girls Night Out" Selfie

Now that’s what you call a super-charged Mom’s Night Out. (Side note: Where was our invitation?) Gwen Stefani posted this fun group selfie with Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Richie, Stella McCartney, Chelsea Handler, Naomi Watts and Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Wood.

"#girlsnight @chelseahandler making us all laugh!" Stefani captioned the photo.

The A-list group reportedly had dinner at the vegan restaurant Crossroads in Hollywood (and we would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for the dinner conversation).

Although Stefani has yet to post a picture of her baby boy Apollo whom she gave birth to in February, she did confirm via Twitter that she would be the new The Voice coach, filling in for Christina Aguilera who took time off for her second pregnancy.

Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera

Aguilera responded to Stefani's pic, tweeting:

.@gwenstefani #waybackwednesday old school pic!

Stefani will reportedly be the only female on Season 7 of The Voice, joining Pharrell Williams and original coaches Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, who have not officially signed on for another season of the show quite yet. Shakira took over for Aguilera in season 6 of the show.

Newly single, ahem “consciously uncoupled,” Gwyneth Paltrow shared this photo as she snuggled up to her kids, Apple and Moses, while on vacation.

Children at school | Sheknows.com

We send our children off to school each day assuming that they will be safe from harm and busy learning. But unfortunately, the times we live in dictate that our kids must know that there is always a potential for danger lurking just beyond the school’s front gate — and there is a plan for how to handle any emergency scenario. Beyond the duck-and-cover drills for earthquakes and the lockdown drills for a potential “active shooter” situation lies that gray zone that has some parents worried that their kids may not be safe enough at school. What are they doing? Teaching their kids how to escape school.

Not your mother’s fire drill

We all grew up with fire drills at school, possibly earthquake drills or tornado drills depending on where we lived. Our children not only have these to deal with, but also terror drills, active shooter drills or evacuation drills. Controversy erupted in March when officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security joined with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Department of Education’s Safety and Security Task Force to visit Glen Ridge High School in New Jersey for an unannounced school lockdown drill. While the reports indicated that everything went smoothly and officials were impressed, the implications of a completely unexpected drill — and the terror inflicted on the school children involved — made many parents furious.

Even more concerning to parents are so-called evacuation drills or relocation drills where students can be loaded on a bus, stripped of cell phones and driven to an unknown location deemed to be “safe” from harm. The implications that school officials might be able to transport their children to an unknown location without their consent has some parents upset — and considering alternative plans.

Should kids be taught to bug out?

Daisy Luther is a freelance writer, and on her website, The Organic Prepper, she offers information on healthy prepping, including premium nutritional choices, general wellness and non-tech solutions. She writes about these drills. "During these drills kids are not allowed to phone their parents and parents are not even allowed to know where their children are in many cases," Luther writes. "In some incidences during which the school forewarns parents about the drill, the parents are told that they cannot pick up their children 'for any reason' during the drill. Many schools now boast of having supplies to keep children at the school for 48 hours in the event of an ‘emergency,’ during which time the children will not be released to their parents," she adds. Under what circumstances would parents be allowed to retrieve their kids from school? Some parents feel that the obvious solution is to teach their children how to escape school.

"By no means am I suggesting that this is a legitimate course of action for every child," shares Luther on her site. "Some kids are too young or too prone to panic and poor judgment to safely bug out. Some environments are too dangerous for a young person to take off on his or her own. Parents have to consider the skills and mindset of their kids before making plans like this. It can definitely be risky, and you have to compare it to the alternative of having your child herded along," she adds. Luther says that she has a huge amount of faith in her child, and that they perform drills of their own.

Teaching kids to stay safe

Christina Rondeau teaches stranger danger to kids, is a 5th degree black belt and a safety expert. She is the author of two books on common-sense safety, The Elements of Staying Safe and Power Parent. "I do think kids should be taught how to escape and not just sit there to be a victim," she says. "I teach my own two children that if they see an opportunity to escape they should if anything was to ever happen. So sad to have to teach this, but it's the ugly truth," she adds. "Kids need to learn they can use a dead body as a shield, climb out a window, run, hide and elude the shooter. They need to learn how to not be a victim."

Will this work for your family?

Many families won’t be comfortable with having an escape plan for their kids. According to Luther, if you think this is a valid option for your family, there are a few things to consider. "Only you can judge whether or not your child or teen can keep a cool enough head to execute a similar plan and use their own judgment in a surprise situation," she says. Luther shares the following tips on her site.

 • If there are younger siblings at the school, your older children will need to plan how to connect with them, and whether or not to abort the bug-out if they can’t connect with the younger ones.
 • You need to set up a primary and secondary rally point where you’ll meet your kids. This should be within a couple of miles of the school, and it should be a place where your children can stay hidden from the main road. The plan should always be to go to the primary rally point, but if for some reason that is unsafe or inaccessible, there should be a secondary rally point that is reached by a different route.
 • Figure out the route your child will take to get to the rally point. Practice getting there from the school. If possible, for reasons of safety and stealth, develop a route that does not use the main road to take them there. Hike or walk this route with your child until they are completely comfortable with it.
 • There are some situations in which evacuation is actually necessary. For example, some places are prone to forest fires, and you wouldn’t want your child out on foot in such a scenario. If the school building were to collapse, it’s obvious the children would be relocated to a safe shelter. This is the point at which your child’s judgment comes into play. It is vital to discuss different scenarios in which evacuation is necessary.

Bottom line? Only you know your children well enough to assess whether or not they are mature enough to determine when — and if — an escape from school may be warranted. But many parents are beginning to question the decision-making skills of school administrators, and are considering alternative plans in the event of a catastrophic emergency.

Supermodel problems: Kate Upton thinks her butt gets no love.

The Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover girl said her chest steals the spotlight from her pert derriere, which we gotta say is pretty great.

In a behind-the-scenes video from a Sports Illustrated shoot in the Cook Islands, Upton laments how everyone ignores her butt in favor of what's up top, and is excited about a specific pose that might finally get her rear some visibility.

"You know what, my butt doesn't get that much attention, so I think this shot will get it the attention it deserves," The Other Woman star said coyly.

Upton also jokes about her famous breasts. When asked why a wardrobe assistant is adjusting her bikini top to make it smaller, she sarcastically replied, "Because you know it helps me appear larger up top, which clearly I need help in."

But Upton made it clear that Sports Illustrated shoots are by far her favorite, no butts about it.

"There's something special about an SI shoot because of the crew — everybody on set feels like family and friends to me and we're all just joking and laughing and having fun," she said. "I feel warm, I feel great, I feel excited... hashtag: best shoot ever!"

Ellen Page stars in one of the biggest summer blockbusters, X-Men: Days of Future Past, but she's making headlines for another big reason: she's talking in-depth about her sexuality. Even though she came out in February at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's inaugural Time to Thrive conference in Las Vegas and opened up about the big confession in an interview with Flare magazine, Page is now sitting down to chat with someone who knows all too well about this topic.

Sitting down with Ellen DeGeneres on her daytime talk show, the 27-year old star appeared nervous when watching footage of her speech, but says she was so ready to get the news off her chest. "I knew I would be a happier person. I knew that I was going to feel better and I did not anticipate just how happy I would feel in every aspect of my life, just an ease and a comfort," Page confessed. "It's really been quite extraordinary to feel the shift that was pretty much overnight."

Ellen Page to pastor: Less prayer, more girl hugs, please >>

Page went on to thank DeGeneres for paving the path for women like her, admitting that that she was "grateful" for the host for coming out "at a time when it was much harder and much scarier." DeGeneres knows all about Page's situation, as she came out in 1997 with a Time magazine cover, so it's only expected that the host shared some insight herself. "It doesn't feel like it at the time but it's a very selfish thing to do."

Page tells the talk-show host that she felt guilty for not being out and even isolated from the LGBT community, but now feels a sense of relief, especially in the work field. "It's so nice to be at work and talk about an ex or, you know, get to wear what you want and not have a conversation about it," she explained.

Bad Teacher is a winner: 5 Reasons you should be watching

Bad Teacher

Sometimes it's hard to tell how you're going to feel about a show after just a pilot episode. I've seen OK pilots become great series and fantastic pilots become terrible ones. But after watching two episodes of Bad Teacher, I love it.

INTERVIEW: Bad Teacher's Ari Graynor on saucy new show >>

The funny thing is that I almost feel like I shouldn't love it because the main character is a woman that, if I met her in real life, I'd immediately want to run away. But she's also a person that you need to get to know to understand how great she is. Meredith (Ari Graynor) should be obnoxious, but instead she's kind of admirable. If a situation doesn't go her way, she figures out a way to make it happen.

In the first episode, her husband cheated on her and left her with nothing in the divorce settlement. So what did she do? She found a job as a teacher that let her meet rich, single dads and gave herself a goal: find a new husband. Even if you don't admire her plan, you have to admire the way she didn't let her previous losses bring her down.

Girl Meets World's June premiere date released by Disney Channel >>

If that's not enough to convince you to watch this new show, here are five reasons to love it.

The hot coach is also a sweetheart

Joel (Ryan Hansen) may have hooked up with Meredith in the first episode, but he's anything but a player. In the second episode he helped the very awkward Irene (Sara Gilbert) stay safe while internet dating and even let her think he asked her out when a blind date dumped her. Talk about adorable.

The principal is hilarious

David Alan Grier kills it on this show as Principal Carl. Sure, Carl tends to over-share a bit and can't seem to stop talking about his roommate, but that is all part of his charm.

The kids

The kids on this show are great for so many reasons. They provide some hilarious reactions to Meredith and her antics, but they also don't let her walk all over them. Meredith learns just as much from her students as they do from her.

Playing House review: Sisters doing it for themselves >>

The extremely high-strung Ginny

Ginny (Kristin Davis) is another character that adds to the charm of the show. She's beyond uptight and isn't exactly what you'd call kind, but you can't help but laugh at pretty much everything that comes out of her mouth.

Meredith makes for an unusual role model

At first glance, the idea of Meredith being a role model might seem far-fetched. But the truth is she's got some admirable qualities — even if it doesn't always seem that way. She doesn't back down from a fight, she always fights for the little guy, she never lets obstacles get in her way and always stays true to who she is. Those are definitely traits to strive for.

Martha Stewart's medicine cabinet is not as tidy as you might think

Martha Stewart's "How to Organize Your Medicine Cabinet" video gives helpful tips like ignore the namesake and don't actually put medicine in there. This small bathroom space is made for items you use every single day. Martha stores her beauty care products in small containers, giving her medicine cabinet a neat and tidy look. We love the simple color scheme and the light and airy feel to this medicine cabinet, but we couldn't help but notice that it wasn't quite as "Martha" as we thought it would be. Maybe it's just us, but we expected more. So we took to Instagram to see if anyone else out there could out-Martha Martha herself.

Keep it simple

Martha's medicine cabinet tutorial sticks to the "keep it simple" mantra — small containers in similar colors. We love this look. But if the medicine cabinet doors came off — or guests were to peek in — what we'd see is still a medicine cabinet. Take a look.

Our winners

What we were hoping to find is something with a bit more decorative style on the inside. And that's what we found when we peeked inside Katherine Sandoz's medicine cabinet. Rumor has it, she even leaves notes inside her medicine cabinet just in case guests really do decide to take a look for themselves.

We also love the look and style of Stephanie Orr's medicine cabinet. Those ceramic bottles are doing double service — they're not just storing day-to-day products, they're also decorating that small space to the max.

Poor Aaron Carter: Hilary Duff hints at reunion with hubby

After being spotted together on romantic vacations, lunch dates and a weekend at Coachella, the rumor mill went into overdrive that Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie were back together just months after announcing their separation. Turns out, that isn't too far from the truth.

In an interview with E! News, Duff said she and Comrie spend loads of time together and are still in love.

"We are constantly seen together and everyone's like, 'What are they doing? Are they back together, are they not?'" she said. "We are really good friends and we have so much respect for each other, and, obviously, Luca is our number-one priority.

"I think we got to a point where we were like, 'We really need to honor happiness and whatever that is,' and however we need to sort that out or work that out, we're doing that," she added. "We love each other so much and we love spending time together. So when you see us out it's not just for Luca, it's because we make plans and we hang out. And we don't know what our future looks like right now, but we're both doing really good and just figuring out what makes us happy."

Her words are bound to devastate poor Aaron Carter, who has been publicly pining away for his teenage sweetheart since Duff and Comrie announced their split.

"I don't know who she is today, she doesn't know who I am today, but I would sweep her off her feet if I ever got a chance to again and fix what I did wrong," Carter recently told Entertainment Tonight, just a month after tweeting his undying love for the mom of one.

Better step up your game, Carter.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have been on a continuous promotional trail to promote their new film The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and while there have been a few mid-interview surprises along the way, Garfield's latest appearance takes the cake. Whether or not it was an intentional effort to one-up Stone's epic lip-synch, the British heartthrob took to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform one amazing rendition of the comic book legend's theme song.

During his interview with Fallon, Garfield spoke about how he's learning how to play guitar, revealing that he knows how to play Cat Stevens and Neil Young songs. Coincidentally, Fallon had a guitar just lying around behind his desk and asked the actor to give viewers a little taste of his skills.

Spider-Man cast on Andrew Garfield: He's not like Spidey at all >>

"This is important. I'm no Idina Menzel. This is the first time I've sung in public," he told the cheering audience, before getting into an adorable live rendition of the Spider-Man theme song. Well into his performance, Fallon, his house band The Roots and the audience joined in on the fun, helping the actor out with additional instruments and cheering. Talk about a surprise performance.

Just last week, his girlfriend Stone appeared on Fallon's show and stunned viewers when she engaged in a lip-synch battle with the late-night host. But this actress didn't lip-synch just any old song. Stone absolutely nailed DJ Khaled's "All I Do Is Win," and we're talking about the Ludacris verse as well.

The choreographer formerly known as Laurieann Gibson is back with a new name, Harlee, and a new album featuring her as a first-time music artist with Akon.

SheKnows caught up with Harlee at the red carpet of the iHeartRadio Music Awards where she revealed some surprising things, including an unexpected name change and working with Akon on her new and first music album.

"I think it's all surprising. I think working with Akon, who is forcing me to make sure I don't lose, including asking me to change my name — I think that was the biggest surprise," Harlee told us.

And as far as her new album goes, Harlee told us all about that as well.

"I have a single out right now, 'Dream Warriors,' featuring Akon," the talented dancer added. "I have a video on Vevo, 'Harlee: Featuring Akon,' and the video is amazing, I directed it with amazing choreography, a dramatic storyline, so you must watch it if you haven't. I am super-excited about the album."

Harlee claimed that while it was odd to change her name, she has actually called herself Harlee every time she referred to her "singer-performer side." But, making it official was not something she had thought about before Akon suggested it.

In addition to having a new album and a whole new identity, Harlee hopes that her music will help fans know that they can go far in life if they stick with it. Having come from a less-than-wealthy home it was "very challenging" for Harlee to get to where she is today, but she didn't let that stop her.

"I hope [fans] get reminded that it's not just a figment of their imagination, but you can really become all that you dream of," she said. "If I didn't give up then, they definitely shouldn't give up either. It's not worth it."

Saks shopper finds desperate plea from Chinese prisoner in her bag

A modern take on a message in a bottle? A Saks Fifth Avenue shopper found a cry for help that had traveled across many oceans and countries... in the bottom of her shopping bag. Stephanie Wilson was looking for her receipt and instead found the handwritten plea, titled "HELP HELP HELP," from Tohnain Emmanuel Njong, a prison laborer in China. Njong wrote that he was being held in a Chinese laogai, a type of labor reform school known to be used to imprison outspoken anti-government political figures.

"We are ill-treated and work like slaves for 13 hours every day producing these bags in bulk in the prison factory," Njong wrote in blue pen. The note went on to detail the isolation, abuse and terrible working conditions he and his fellow prisoners were suffering before concluding with, "Thanks and sorry to bother you."

Wilson stared at the tiny passport photo of a man in an orange jumpsuit included with the letter and was deeply shaken. And no wonder. Especially after the Rana Plaza factory collapse a year ago that killed 1,100 and wounded another 2,500, we are all becoming more and more aware that people are suffering to make things for us that we just throw away. The sad part is, it's not often that we have to confront it so literally.

I remember shopping at a Forever 21 store after reading an expose of the horrible labor practices used to produce "fast fashion" and feeling sick to my stomach. Which is worse: buying a $6 T-shirt knowing that the low price is because of sweat shops or not buying it and putting poverty stricken people out of a job? I didn't ask myself if I really needed another white T-shirt because the answer to that is always yes. And no. And as this situation clearly shows, the problem goes far beyond cheap tees to even the shopping bag they come in. The real question is that now that we know, how can we answer their cry for help?

For Wilson, thankfully Njong also included an email address and the internet set out to track him down. Eventually the note got turned over to the Department of Homeland Security since U.S. law makes it illegal for "products made using slave, convict or indentured labor to be imported into the United States." (Saks denies knowing how the bags were manufactured and has opened up an investigation into their supply chain.)

While the DHS isn't commenting on Njong's case specifically, it did say this is definitely not the first report of a Chinese cry for help ending up in a consumer's hands in the U.S. Also in 2012, a woman found a similar letter in a Halloween decoration she bought from Kmart.

Just something to think about the next time you go shopping and are thrilled with the super deal you got on clearance. Is it really a good deal, after all? Oh, and don't forget to check your bag.
