Does Jessica Simpson's dad have a boy toy?

The parents of Jessica Simpson are splitting after 34 years of marriage, and a little secret papa Joe may have kept locked in the closet could be the cause.

Joe, Jessica and Tina Simpson

Joe and Tina Simpson are calling it quits after a whopping 34 years of marriage, the couple announced Wednesday.

Rumors swirled that Jessica Simpson's parents were on the outs when they placed their Los Angeles mansion — the location of Ashlee Simpson's shotgun wedding — on the market in September for $4.4 million. Now those rumors have been confirmed.

"It is an amicable split and there is no third party involved," a rep for the couple confirmed. "Any other related allegations are completely false. The family appreciates your respect for their privacy at this time."

What related allegations would those be? Oh, just that little rumor that Joe is a closet case with a 20-year-old boyfriend on the side.

According to The National Enquirer, Joe told the family his dark secret two months ago — shortly before Tina filed for divorce.

Did Jessica Simpson's fiancé cheat on her? >>

"Joe got the family together about two months ago and came out of the closet," a source told the Enquirer. "He told them that he'd tried to continue in his marriage to Tina, but he couldn't go on any longer and deny the fact that he had these feelings for men."

The source also pointed to Joe's August DUI arrest as further proof his life was falling apart and he couldn't keep his secret much longer.

"The police report stated that there was someone else in the car with Joe," another family insider told the Enquirer. "Some reports have stated it was Tina, but now the belief is that it may well have been a boyfriend."

Joe, a former Baptist minister and youth pastor, wed Tina in 1977.

How to... make a dry erase board

Whiteboards are the new blackboards. Create your own and you have a fun and functional tool for kids that are back in school.

What you'll need:

  • Plywood
  • High-quality transparent tape
  • Clean rag
  • 120 grit sandpaper
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint primer
  • Dry-erase paint

Step 1: Prepare the surface

Prepare the surface that you'll be painting, using tape to mask off the areas that you don't want painted. Wipe off any dirt or dust with the rag. You might want to lightly sand the plywood to make sure that the surface is smooth enough to write on. Wipe off any additional dust.

Step 2: Prime the board

Prime the surface using a high-quality primer; two coats give the best results. The primer should dry in about an hour. Once the primer is dry, give it another wipe with the rag to get rid of any dust.

Step 3: Mix and paint

When you purchase the dry-erase paint, you will receive two canisters. Mix the two canisters -- but don't mix more than you're ready to use. Once the liquid is combined you only have an hour and a half to apply the paint.

Once the paint is mixed, apply the paint, working in 2-foot areas. The dry-erase paint cannot be spread out, so remember to apply generously to every inch of the surface. For best results, paint the surface meticulously, in a grid pattern.

Step 4: Let dry

It usually takes seven days for the paint to dry completely. Take off the tape and feel free to customize the borders to your liking. Add a hook or staple a ribbon to the back so you can hang it up. Whatever you do, the kids are sure to write, erase and repeat!

How to make your own fake blood

$
0
0
If you're looking for that authentic zombie or vampire effect, you're probably not happy with the bright-red sticky stuff you buy in the costume aisle. Make it yourself at home just like the Hollywood pros do with these simple and easy instructions.

Hollywood-style fake blood recipe

Making Hollywood-style fake blood is easier than you think, and it can be done with ingredients you probably already have around the house. If you've got flour, food coloring and some corn syrup, you're about 10 minutes away from homemade ghoulish fun — for Halloween or just for fun!

Hollywood-style fake blood recipe

Yields about 2 tablespoons

What you'll need:

  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1 tiny drop blue food coloring
  • 1 tiny drop green food coloring
  • 1 scant teaspoon flour, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup
  • 1 small shallow glass or plastic bowl
  • 1 toothpick
  • Cooking spray
  • Water
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Liquid laundry soap

Directions:

  1. Add flour and red food coloring to the mixing bowl.
  2. Spritz your tablespoon with cooking spray and use it to add corn syrup to the mix.
  3. Use the toothpick to add the tiniest drop of blue food coloring. You can always add more. Add the same amount of green food coloring if you need it to be more purple. Stir with a small whisk or spoon until well blended .
  4. Adjust the recipe using additional food coloring, chocolate sauce, water or laundry detergent as needed.

Ingredients for fake blood

It's obvious why you need the syrup and red food coloring, but using those ingredients alone will produce the same fake-looking goop you buy in the Halloween aisle. To properly adjust your mix, it's important to understand the effects the other ingredients have on your fake blood so you know how to adjust the recipe to your unique needs. For the best results, try making some ahead of time so you can experiment.

Fake blood mixed

Cooking spray

The cooking spray simply acts to prevent the corn syrup from sticking to the tablespoon. The fat prevents the syrup from adhering to the plastic or metal surface. In a pinch, you could also use butter, shortening or even regular cooking oil. Just make sure it's a light coating so you don't add too much oil to the mix.

Blue and green food coloring

The blue and green food coloring help darken the red so it doesn't have that bright, fake look. If your blood is too bright, you can add more. Start with just the blue and add green, as well, if you need a more "purple" look.

You want lighter blood for "fresh wounds" and darker blood for those that would have been there longer. Just add the blue or green food coloring, one very tiny drop at a time . Remember, arterial blood is bright red and veinous blood is dark .

Flour

Flour is a thickener. Don't use extra corn syrup to thicken, as it gives the blood a strange, almost sticky look. If you don't have flour, you can add a bit of cornstarch, as well, but use less.

Glass or plastic bowl

Be careful what container you use for the mix. Red food coloring stains, especially if it's left in the container for too long. Use one you don't care about. If you tend to like creepier costumes, just mark it "fake blood" and tuck it away with your Halloween decorations.

Water & chocolate sauce

Water and chocolate sauce can be used to adjust the thickness of the blood. Water will thin it, while the chocolate will thicken. Only use the chocolate if your blood can stand to be a bit darker. Otherwise, stick with flour or cornstarch.

Liquid laundry detergent

Adding laundry detergent to the mix is said to make it easier to get it out of clothing. But beware. It may not work on all clothes. Also, you shouldn't use it for blood that's going to be on kids or blood that goes too near your mouth or fingers, as you're likely to ingest some . Skip this step if you need to keep it fully edible.

Mascarpone penne with sun-dried tomatoes

Sun-dried tomatoes make a delicious sauce

Yes, it's true that fresh tomatoes make a wonderful marinara sauce. But have you ever tried sun-dried tomatoes? Turns out they make an awesome pasta sauce as well.

A few months ago, I had dinner at an Italian restaurant that was out of this world. They made a farfalle that was covered in a delicious mascarpone cheese and sun-dried tomato sauce. I couldn't believe I was such a fan because I hate sun-dried tomatoes. I'm not sure why I don't like them, maybe it's the taste, maybe it's the texture. Whatever the reason, I rarely order anything that has sun-dried tomatoes in it. So, why did I try this pasta dish? Because several people had recommended it. I was so thrilled with my order, I decided to try and make the same dish at home. I couldn't believe how easy it was. But the best thing about the dish, it was just as tasty as the restaurant version.

Mascarpone penne with sun-dried tomatoes

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 12 ounces penne
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 container mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup Italian cheese mixture, shredded
  • 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1 cup peas

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper and cook in a baking dish for 20 minutes. Cut the chicken breasts into one-half-inch cubes and set aside.
  2. Cook the penne according to the package directions, drain and set aside.
  3. Melt the butter over medium-high heat in a large saucepan. Whisk in the flour and milk until combined. Add the mascarpone and Italian cheeses and stir until melted and thick. Stir in the tomatoes, peas and chicken.
  4. Pour the cheese sauce over the penne and toss until coated. Serve immediately.

How to detect breast cancer early

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time when the country pulls out their pink ribbons, make donations, run a few miles and posts a chain status to Facebook in recognition of this disease. For those fighting breast cancer and for their loved ones, who can only watch, the battle goes way beyond October.

woman doing breast exam

It’s an everyday struggle that lasts their entire lives. It’s the daily question of whether they're going to live. It’s a young woman who struggles to fathom how to live through the rest of her live without the advice or touch of her mother. It’s a young woman who doesn’t have to fathom it, but has to face it. When someone loses that fight, the immeasurable loss haunts their families forever. The most important element missing from this equation is the period before cancer happens — that’s the time to make a change. Here are three must-do early detection ways find breast cancer before it finds you.

Step 1: Never miss a checkup

"Romina Schaan’s mother didn’t have health insurance when it was time for her routine checkup, but cancer didn't wait."

"She didn't miss her mammogram by choice," said Romina Schaan, a 21-year-old college student whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011.

A year and a half before the diagnosis, Schaan’s mother went in for her routine mammogram, and it came back entirely clear. There were no lumps, spots or warnings. She was 100 percent cancer-free, and according to her daughter, the perfect image of health. Schaan’s mother didn’t have health insurance when it was time for her next routine checkup, but cancer didn't wait.

"In a year and a half it managed to become stage four," Schaan said.

The cancer had spread to her breast bone, but doctors assured her she would be one of the lucky few to be cured. Despite aggressive treatment and the hopes of her family, however, the cancer spread to her lungs, brain, liver and other bones. Her health deteriorated rapidly and she passed away only weeks after watching her daughter walk down the aisle.

Never miss a checkup with a doctor, whether this be a mammogram or a clinical breast exam -- there is never a valid excuse or reason, and if you think there is, cancer won’t care.

Step 2: Breast self-exam

We’ve all seen the posters for them in the bathroom stalls and doctor's office, but how many of us actually do it?

My mom did, and it was the difference between life and death.

She was taking a shower and while she was rubbing soap on her breasts, her own designed check-up, and she felt something strange -- a firm, small and unmistakable lump. She made the mistake of waiting three months, but with pleas from her family, didn’t wait one second more. She got insurance and after two surgeries, extreme radiation, a strong fight and five years of Tamoxifen, she is, thankfully, alive.

I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if she hadn't checked her breasts that day. It’s important to incorporate this into our weekly or at least monthly lives so we are familiar with our breasts and able to detect any changes. Learn the simple steps and make it a part of your life.

Here are the red flags to always be looking for, according to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s website :

  • Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area
  • Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast
  • Change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
  • Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
  • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
  • New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away

Step 3: It’s never too early to start checking

For those who are in their early 20s like me, it’s too early to start breast self-exams or read up on breast cancer developments, right?

Wrong. It’s never too early, especially with people being exposed every day to hormones, radiation and health hazards that other generations never had. We have a cell phone to our ear, hormone-fed everything and computers on our laps to write articles on daily basis. We are all at risk; one in eight women under 45 will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Once you turn 20, start having a clinical breast exam every three years. Once you turn 40, it should be every year. Also stay informed about the latest breast cancer developments and treatments. Ask if you really need that X-ray or CT scan, for example.

Romina Schaan's mother left behind children, grandchildren and a husband of 35 years. During her mother's treatment, Schaan met many young women with more than breast cancer; they had children, and babies. She doesn't want to share the same fate, especially with a beautiful life ahead with her new husband. Schaan and has already started getting yearly breast exams and aims to stay informed and conscious of her health.

"The difference a few months make cannot be stressed enough. It is life or death."

"My family can't leave this in the past -- it's our life now and the glue that held us together is gone," Schaan said. "The difference a few months make cannot be stressed enough. It is life or death."

It’s never too early to start fighting breast cancer -- your mother would agree.

Vegas recap: Dodging bullets

There's conflict left and right on the bright streets of Vegas! The Lamb brothers aren't getting along and Vincent Savino can't seem to make a friend to save his life! At least he's a good driver and can save it himself!

The Lamb Brothers

Sheriff Ralph Lamb proves once again that he makes the rules and others abide, but this time it's not against the rule-breakers. No, this time the conflict emerges with his brother, Jack over an old oak tree. That's right. A tree.

Jack wants to move the tree, but Ralph refuses to let him. In a touching moment, Ralph remembers his wife hanging laundry on the clothesline by the oak tree. He sits on his couch and has the perfect view of his window of those special, yet mundane memories. There's no way he's moving that tree, but he won't tell Jack why. Stubborn cowboy pride, I suppose.

Maybe it's respect for the family hierarchy, but Ralph always seems to win and after 30 some odd years Jack seems to be growing rather tired of it. So, despite Ralph's obvious disdain for all things mob related, Jack makes a move on the notorious Johnny Rizzo's daughter. Mia is stunning and always has amazing hair, so I can see the appeal, but you have to wonder how a relationship between a mobster's daughter and a law man would ever survive in this feuding city?

Jack flirts with Mia

Unfortunately, he's too late because that dirty DA already scooped her up for a romantic drive to the Hoover Dam. I caught that twinkle in her eye for Jack, though. He may still have a chance.

Vincent Savino and his newly acquired enemies are to blame for most of the city's conflict. Since Angelo told him he couldn't expand the casino from the inside, Savino decided to make a move on his own and expand from the outside by partnering with the owner of the Tumbleweed Casino across the street.

Unfortunately, the Milwaukee mob wants in on the deal as well and decides to take Savino out. But, the guy's got moves! He dodges bullets and drives his car away from the gunmen while lying down. The things you learn from a life of crime.

Savino, as usual, showed them who's boss and they wound up with bullets in their brains in the trunk of a car. Unlike those other guys, Savino makes sure he gets the job done. However, Savino's boss doesn't like that he made the deal without his permission, so he's definitely skating on thin ice here… with everyone.

The 1950s style, culture and energy shine in this show and are a huge part of what makes this show so fun to watch! Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how everything comes together to bring this true to life story to the same screen.

How to carve a pumpkin

Happy Halloween!

How to...
carve a pumpkin

Everyone enjoys carving pumpkins around Halloween, but it can be messy and challenging. Here are tips on how to get your perfect pumpkin.

Step 1: Pick your pumpkin

The type of pumpkin you choose to carve can determine your carving's fate. Look for a large pumpkin -- the larger, the better. Pumpkins with a light color also tend to be softer and easier to carve. And look for bruising or moldy stems before you purchase your pumpkin because that will cause early spoiling.

Step 2: Clean

As you cut off the top of your pumpkin, try to angle the cut so your top won't fall into the pumpkin when the cut is complete. Next, remove the seeds and “guts” of the pumpkin, scraping the sides until they are clear -- this will help to prevent early rotting. Another trick is soaking your newly clean pumpkin in bleach water for a couple of hours. Once the pumpkin is dry, rub the inside and outside with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to prevent shriveling. Don’t forget to save the seeds for a tasty treat later on!

Step 3: Choose a template

Now that your pumpkin is clean, it's time to pick a template. Your pumpkin's face can be anything you want -- scary, funny, entertaining, etc. Most store-bought pumpkin carving kits include a book with multiple faces to choose from, but you can also get inspiration from the web. Your pumpkin doesn’t have to have to be a classic scary face -- it could even be someone’s actual face. If you are a beginner, though, make sure to stick to simple designs. Cut out the areas of the template that you wish to carve into the pumpkin and using a Sharpie or a small thumb tack, trace around the edges of the template. You can tape the template on the pumpkin for this step or hold it in place.

Step 4: Cut

Using a serrated knife, begin to cut around the edges of your outlined template. These knives are usually included in a store-bought kit, but a regular serrated knife you have on hand will do. Move the knife along the edges of your template in a sawing motion. Take your time with this step -- make sure you don't leave any marker showing. This is the most time-consuming step, so be patient.

Step 5: Light your pumpkin

Once your carving is complete, it’s time to light your pumpkin. Carving the bottom off of your pumpkin can help with this step -- not only will it provide easier access to the candle, but it will make it easier to carve and more stable. Simply place the candle on a wide enough fire-proof base and slip the pumpkin right over it -- just make sure you cut off enough space on the bottom to accommodate the candle. If you do not choose to cut the bottom off, consider using a flameless candle or votive candle in a glass holder. These options make it easier to regulate the temperature inside the pumpkin to prevent a fire hazard. It is also recommended that you leave the lid off of your jack-o-lantern, but if you must put the lid on, make sure to carve a hole in the unseen back side of the pumpkin to serve as a chimney.

Step 6: Decorating

To make your pumpkin stand out you can add decorating accessories. Any of these awesome kits will help add pizzazz to a garden-variety pumpkin. If carving pumpkins is too messy and takes too long for you, these stick-on decorative items can also take the place of traditional carvings. Paint is another great alternative to carving as well.

Mom story: I left Hollywood to help sick kids

After realizing that she wanted to help families with critically ill children, Paula DuPre’ Pesmen, 50, quit her job as an associate producer in Hollywood and returned home to Boulder, Colorado, to start There With Care, a nonprofit that gives families a hand. The mother of two boys ages 7 and 10, Paula knows from personal experience how important it is to have people to lean on.

my mom story

by Paula DuPre’ Pesmen
as told to Julie Weingarden Dubin

I loved working behind the scenes on the first three Harry Potter films. I learned a great deal about the industry as an associate producer and I learned even more about the fragility of life.

During my time working on the Harry Potter movies, I started a program with the movie’s director, Chris Columbus, to welcome sick children and their families to the sets. Children with life-threatening illnesses were given a day to escape their worries and pain and visit the world of Harry Potter. While spending time with those special families, I discovered how people wanted to help, but didn't know what to say or do, so they often didn't do anything.

When I first started talking to families who came to the sets, I mentioned that I bet there were many people wanting to help them. But that wasn’t the case. Surprisingly, most said that people weren’t calling or coming over. They felt alone and I realized that these families needed support.

A deeper meaning

I understand how desperate and alone people can feel at such a vulnerable time in their lives. I helped my husband, Curt, battle advanced colon cancer in 2001.

In 2005, it became clear what I needed to do. I quit my job as a producer and moved back home to Boulder, Colorado, to start There With Care, a nonprofit that connects people who want to help with those who need it. I wasn’t nervous about leaving a movie career behind. After going through my husband's battle with cancer and then spending time with so many families enduring critical illness, I couldn't imagine not being there for these families.

Holding families together

Hey, Moms: Do you know a mother with a great story? We’re looking for Mom Stories. Email Jrosewriter@gmail.com with your suggestions.

There With Care provides a broad range of services, allowing the program coordinators to shift services as the families' needs change. Whether it’s offering babysitting for the families’ other kids, cooking and delivering meals, shopping for necessities or giving rides to chemo appointments, There With Care is ready to step in and offer support. We reach families in Colorado and California, and have 500 volunteers. We serve on average 80 to 100 families each day.

My work with There With Care is rewarding and fulfilling. It’s truly a privilege to be a small part of the support for a family facing critical illness. What these families go through is going to happen — we can't change that, but we can break down their isolation. Our goal is to take just a few things off of their plate so they can focus on their children.

My inspiration

My children, Josh and Jesse, have brought me and my husband so much joy and laughter. We no longer look at just our lives, but we look at our family's lives and the future of our boys. Everything I do in regards to work has been inspired by my children.

I hope that my sons are learning compassion through There With Care and that it’s important to share what we have, because we all need to take care of each other.

Mom wisdom

When things are challenging, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. You can't fix everything, but you can do little things that add up. I find comfort when I stay focused on my family. Family is where I'm most grounded and it’s where the love is.

Most beautiful colleges in the U.S.

When you are buying a home or planning a vacation, location is one of the most important deciding factors. Surprisingly enough, the same is true for incoming college freshmen when they are considering where to attend. Unique architecture, natural and artistic landscape and picture-perfect views all play a larger role than you think when it comes to attracting potential students, faculty and even tourists! If the thought of cramming for finals with a view of the ocean, mountains or historical buildings sounds good, one of these colleges is for you!

University of Washington, Seattle, Washington

These five campuses are not just some of the best academic institutions in the entire world, but also some of the prettiest places to get an education as well. From gothic-style buildings to stained-glass windows to views of mountains and beaches, these unique architectural campuses may make it hard to focus on your studies!

University of Washington, Seattle, Washington

It's no surprise this school made our list, especially because Seattle is one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S. Not only does the university have stunning views of snowcapped Mount Rainier, but it also has some pretty incredible architecture. Most of the buildings are built in a gothic theme, especially the Suzzallo Library, which is complete with 35-foot-high stained-glass windows and ornate vaulted ceilings that are more than 65 feet tall. The quad's 30 unique Yoshino cherry trees will take your breath away in the spring with vibrant pink blossoms that provide a stark contrast to the rest of the buildings. One of the students' favorite places to relax is the Drumheller Fountain, which is made up of three jets with the center one shooting water almost 100 feet in the air.

Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio

Kenyon College, a small school that sits atop the hilly town of Gambier, Ohio, has received a ton of press lately, and not for just academics! Forbes and Travel & Leisure both named this one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country. What appeals to most prospective and current students are the sweeping trees and lawns, the expanses of lush green gardens and the way the Gothic architecture of the historic college contrasts with the simple Midwestern homes speckling the campus. Besides the 10-foot-wide middle path, which is decorated with mature trees , the Old Kenyon building, the college's first building, is a student favorite because of its multicolored spire.

University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia

The gorgeous campus of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson, is not just one of the prettiest college campuses in the country, but is the only university in the U.S. to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site! The grand architecture, fields of green and pockets of large, lush trees make this university a gorgeous place to be . A favorite spot for the students, faculty and photographers is the Rotunda, which towers over the landscape with Neoclassical pillars and a large dome. The Rotunda was modeled after the Pantheon in Rome and many of the other buildings have a very similar look and feel.

Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon

Located just six miles from trendy downtown Portland, Lewis and Clark College feels like it's light-years away from the hustle and bustle. Situated among 137 acres of lush green forests, sweeping pathways, gardens and stone walls, this stunning college looks and feels more like a posh ski lodge than an academic institution. One of the most beautiful buildings is the Frank Manor House, which was once a 35-room private mansion and now houses the financial, admissions and business office. Another hot spot for students and visitors is the Reflecting Pool and Estate Gardens, which are bordered by a lush wall and feature a stunning view of Mount Hood. In addition to the stellar views, the college sits right by the Tyron Creek State Natural Area, a popular hiking spot of more than 600 acres.

University of San Diego, San Diego, California

University of San Diego, San Diego, California

If you ask most of the students at University of San Diego why they love their school, they will probably answer "the weather," "the architecture" and "the views." This acclaimed university also made the coveted Travel & Leisure list as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country and after one visit, it's not hard to see why. The buildings are reminiscent of the Spanish Renaissance with delicate and elaborate ironwork and ornately carved woodwork. You can't miss the Immaculata Chapel, which has a bright blue dome that is often visible from the entire city. Another favorite to catch some views is the Garden of the Sea, located right near the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice, because of its serene and relaxing reflecting pool and gardens that offer breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the city's widespread beaches.

Why do you volunteer in the classroom?

$
0
0
With school budgets under ever increasing stress, and cuts happening in even the wealthiest of school districts, volunteering in the schools is more important than ever. Assistants and aides are often some of the first positions on the chopping block , so teachers need help in the classroom with everything from set-up to photocopying to leading small group activities. If you have the time and inclination, it's very much worth your effort to be a classroom volunteer.

Volunteering in a school classroom is not only helpful to the class teacher, but it has numerous other benefits, especially if you work directly with your child’s class. Some think that those who participate in the classroom have another goal in mind — hovering, or checking up on the classroom teacher to make sure that their child’s needs are being met. While some parents do wish to be able to keep an eagle eye on their kiddo’s day, most are truly there to help out.

Hearts of gold

Teachers appreciate volunteers more than you might know. “Oh without a doubt they have the hearts of gold and are doing it to help,” explained Katie, mother of two and a high school biology teacher.

Liz, mother of two, agreed. “When I volunteered, I was working with kids that needed extra help, so I didn't even interact with my daughter except when I got there and when I left. In my experience I haven't seen the hovering, but that's because I haven't seen many parent volunteers in the classroom.”

You get known

Parent volunteers can become well known to not only their child’s teacher, but the other classroom teachers and the rest of the staff as well. Having a presence in your child’s school also helps you to get to know and interact with your child’s friends. Being familiar to your child’s teacher, the school secretary, the principal and the rest of the staff can ease pick-up time and your comfort in the school can make it seem like you’re part of the group.

Inner workings

Having a presence in the school lets you in on your child’s daily routine as well as allowing you to witness how the school works. “Personally, I volunteer at my child's school for adult interaction, and because I want to be involved in my child's education,” explained Kelly, mom of two. “When you volunteer, you know more about the inner workings of the school... that has its advantages. When I volunteer at class parties, I do it to help out, but I also like being with my child.”

Benefits for your child

Your child may reap benefits of your continued presence as well. Jolene from California found that teachers were nicer to the kids whose parents volunteered. “It is not fair, but that did play into my desire to volunteer at the beginning because Kaden was a shy kid,” she told us. Other parents felt that kids whose parents volunteered at school tended to do better in school and were more socially accepted. “At least in my area, those whose parents are heavily involved are well liked, get the best classes and excel in school,” said Lisa, mom of three.

Volunteering in your child’s school benefits not only your child, but the teachers, staff and you as well. Being a hands-on part of your child’s education can be very rewarding. And what’s more important than that?

Meat Loaf is a butcher: Another questionable endorsement

We can’t be the only ones who are excited for the election to come to an end. Romney and Obama have got to be exhausted by now, and are probably looking forward to the day their celebrity “friends” don’t help quite so much. Meat Loaf’s horrific rendition of America the Beautiful had us almost feeling sorry for politicians, but opened the “favorite massacres of patriotic songs” door for us. Enjoy…

Meat LoafMeat Loaf

Painful. Just painful. When we think of meatloaf we think of a bulky, greasy mess comprised of questionable ingredients and served to us when Mom ran out of ideas. The comparison is not dissimilar when we watch with horror as Meat Loaf wails his way through America the Beautiful. Mitt Romney has a look on his face that says, "How the hell do I get off this stage gracefully? I knew I should been more skeptical when I saw my campaign manager having lunch with Obama!"

Obama to Madonna: Could you just not? >>

Christina Aguilera

You know how people always ask what you were doing during important events in history? When Christina took liberties with the national anthem lyrics, most of us were in the kitchen piling on the snacks for the first phase of our gluttonous Super Bowl feeding frenzy, listening to Christina in the background. About 1 minute and 19 seconds into the performance, we heard something that damn near made us drop our Lil Smokies on the floor as we whipped around and said, “What the hell did she just say?” She later explained her flub-up on Ellen, saying that she got wrapped up in how far she had come from her days of singing the national anthem when she was 8 years old. Okay. Why can’t she just say, “Hey, it’s a really hard friggin’ song to sing and my extensions were sewn in a little tight that day, constricting the blood flow to my brain.” There. Was that so hard?

Christina Aguilera is embracing her post-pregnancy body >>

Michael Bolton

You only have to wait about 48 seconds into this wickedly satisfying national anthem disaster for the punch line. Even though most of us memorized the words to The Star-Spangled Banner the first week of kindergarten, Michael Bolton has to look at his hand. As much as it kills us to play nice and not be completely snarky, we’ll allow that the national anthem is a difficult song to sing, and we can see where nerves may get the better of a performer. But writing the lyrics on your hand? And then looking at them? It just puts Bolton in the same category as the little weasel in second grade who always looked at our paper during a spelling test. Makes you wonder if Bolton even spelled “were” correctly on his hand.

Steven Tyler

Maybe Steven watched this clip, and that's why he decided to quit American Idol. Perhaps he thought, "Wow, if I got up and auditioned with The Star-Spangled Banner, I’d never make it past the first cut." Okay, that's kind of harsh, but kind of true. Steven is a legend, and is unstoppable at what he does well — it just so happens that singing the national anthem is not one of those things. Watching him scream at the end makes me glad I wasn’t born as Steven Tyler’s vocal chords. Ouch!

ABC brings the giggles when kids recap Revenge

What's more mind-boggling than the plot of Revenge? The plot of Revenge through the eyes of grade-school kids. Still, they're pretty cute.

Revenge's Emily

Still need to catch up on Revenge? Don't have time to sit through the entire hour before the next episode? There is a funny and extremely adorable solution to that problem.

Meet Emily, Charlize, Mason and Madeline. Where they came from or who they belong to is a mystery. However, whoever owns them decided to let them sit through an episode of Revenge. Afterward, ABC let the cameras roll while the four cuties recapped the entire episode. Hilarity ensues.

When "Intuition" begins, it's a dramatic close-up.

"The girl was washing the floor," Emily starts.

"Then she squeezes it into the little bucket," Madeline adds, referring to the bloody rag.

Next we see Victoria scrunch up a letter and a check and throw them into the fire. There's a bit of a debate. Was it a bill? Was it money? Or was it... a piece of paper?

"What was the paper?" Charlize pleads.

Later, Madeline and Mason act out a scene between Amanda and Emily. Dramatic body language is included. Lines are misheard and misinterpreted. Cliché lines and dramatic effects are completely lost on at least two of them.

And who is supposed to be dead, anyway? Is it Emily's father... or mother? It's so hard to keep up.

Whether you actually know what's going on with Revenge or not, the video is pretty cute. If you've got five minutes to waste, watching Revenge from a Kid is the way to spend them.

ABC should consider making Mad, Mas, Char and Em a regular occurence.

Justin Timberlake had nothing to do with that video, ok?

Justin Timberlake is now apologizing for an offensive video given to him from a pal during his wedding to Jessica Biel last week in Italy.

Justin Timberlake apologizes for homeless video

We were thrilled earlier this week when Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel released photos and little tidbits — via People — of their wedding last week at the Borgo Egnazi resort in Puglia, Italy.

Well, we were thrilled until Gawker posted a video — shot by friend Justin Huchel — showing homeless "friends" of the couple wishing them well in their new marriage.

"Justin and Jessica, I haven't seen you for a long time," one homeless man said into the camera. "I hope the wedding goes fine for you. My gift is in the mail."

No, you're prettier: What JT & Jess might fight about >>

The homeless men were allegedly paid around $40 for their participation, according to TMZ. However, Huchel's lawyer said it was all in good fun. Now, Timberlake is apologizing for the eight-minute clip via an open letter on his official website.

Normally, as some of you know, I am a pretty private person. So, I don't really take it upon myself to comment on things that so often go misunderstood or something that has even shed any kind of dark light on what was and will always be one of the most special weeks of my life. But, in light of the recent events, I can't fight the urge to clarify my thoughts and feelings on what has been a very upsetting portrayal of the people closest to me and myself. It's not who I am as a professional or as a man.

I can't help but think of one of the many great life lessons my Grandfather has taught me... He told me when I was younger that "Sometimes, you are confronted with challenges in life that perhaps are not your own. And, when those moments arise, the right thing for a man to do is accept that responsibility, whatever it may be, and face it with honesty and humility."

The actor and singer goes on to explain that he doesn't like to make fun of anyone, excluding himself. He cites his Tennessee upbringing as the reason for his kindness before launching into a detailed explanation of his non-involvement with the video.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel: How we knew they were meant to be >>

As it pertains to this silly, unsavory video that was made as a joke and not in any way in mockery:

1. I had no knowledge of its existence. I had absolutely ZERO contribution to it.

2. My friends are good people. This was clearly a lapse in judgment which I'm sure no one who is reading this is exempt from. But, I don't believe it was made to be insensitive. More so, I think it was made as a joke on me not having that many friends attending my own wedding .

3. Like many silly rumors that I have been made aware of about the week: It was NOT shown at my wedding.

4. I think we can all agree that it was distasteful, even though that was not it's [sic] intention.

…I want to be very clear... I am NOT defending the video. I agree with the overall consensus. But, to use another "pants" analogy... It seems that these days, misconception gets around the world before the actual truth even wakes up and gets it's [sic] pants on.

I want to say that, on behalf of my friends, family, and associative knuckleheads, I am deeply sorry to anyone who was offended by the video. Again, it was something that I was not made aware of. But, I do understand the reaction and, by association, I am holding myself accountable.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts. It really is a blessing to be able to speak directly to my true fans so that you can know exactly where I stand.

As for how he'll get back at his friend?

"You can bet your ass that I'm having my friend do at least 100 hours of community service... Boom," he concluded.

While we appreciate the apology, it's important to drive home the idea of "think before you act."

Timeline: How to prepare your body for pregnancy

$
0
0
Deciding to have a baby can be one of the most exciting times in your life — you may even get sidetracked with anticipation. But when it comes to conceiving, it’s important you remember to prepare your body for pregnancy. Here’s a brief timeline on what you should be doing pre-conception and when.

Woman beginning fitness routine

Three months before conception

Visit your doctor

The healthier you are, the easier conceiving will be. Not only that, your body will better be able to handle pregnancy. So visit your doctor for a full physical to ensure your blood pressure levels are in check — even some basic bloodwork will come in handy to make sure that everything is functioning properly. If they're not, alter your lifestyle habits accordingly — your doctor can tell you what you need to do.

Go off birth control

Most doctors say it takes about three months for your body to return to a normal cycle — whereby you can track ovulation — after being on birth control. Once your cycle seems normal, you can then talk to your doctor about tracking ovulation with an ovulation test or charting your daily temps.

Stop drinking or smoking

Both of these vices will adversely affect your health, your baby's health and the likelihood that you'll be able to conceive. If you want a child, it's best to start the quitting process now so there's no chance you'll be doing either one once fertilization happens.

Two months before conception

Start a regular exercise regimen

If you don't already work out on a regular basis, now is the time to start. Not only will exercise help reduce the amount of cortisol in your body, it will also help you cope with any conception issues you may encounter. On top of that, it will help boost your muscle and cardiovascular strength — you'll need both to carry the extra weight of a baby.

Change your diet

Getting your daily dose of nutrients and vitamins is not only essential for your health, but it's super important for your baby's. Research says it takes 30 days for something to become habit, so if you need to alter your eating patterns — digging into more vegetables or going organic — now would be the time to change things up.

One month before conception

Start popping folic acid pills

Folic acid is essential if you're trying to get pregnant. Not only does it protect the female reproductive system, it will stave off neural tube defects . Talk to your doctor about how much folic acid you will need to take on a daily basis and get suggestions on the kind of multivitamin/folic acid pills you should purchase.

Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to barbaric roots

Arnold Schwarzenegger's career is moving full speed ahead. The actor will reprise his role as the iconic hero Conan the Barbarian. The 65-year-old plans to star in the new sequel, The Legend of Conan.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger's returning to familiar territory. The actor will headline the action film, The Legend of Conan. It's been 30 years since Schwarzenegger first played the literary hero.

The new film will completely disregard the 2011 reboot starring Jason Mamoa, as well as the 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer. It will be a direct follow-up to 1982's Conan the Barbarian.

Producer Chris Morgan told Deadline, “After the original seminal movie, all that came after looked silly to me. Robert E. Howard’s mythology and some great philosophy from Nietzsche to Atilla [sic] the Hun was layered in the original film... This movie picks up Conan where Arnold is now in his life, and we will be able to use the fact that he has aged in this story... We think this is a worthy successor to the original film. Think of this as Conan’s Unforgiven.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger is coming back to the big screen >>

Schwarzenegger has no problem playing the character as a senior citizen. After wrapping up his stint as governor of California, he's been anxious to get back in theaters. “I always loved the Conan character and I’m honored to be asked to step into the role once again," the actor said. "I can’t wait to work with Universal and the great team of Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan to develop the next step of this truly epic story.”

Before grabbing his sword and loincloth, Schwarzenegger has a couple other films on the horizon. Next year, he'll appear in The Last Stand, followed by The Tomb alongside Sylvester Stallone.

Levi Johnston is soon to be a married man! The father of curiously named kids Tripp and Breeze Beretta is to marry his second baby mama this weekend, but unlike his engagement to Bristol Palin, the 22-year-old seems set on actually walking down the aisle this time.

Levi Johnston

Levi Johnston's bachelorhood is scheduled to come to an end in a matter of hours. The former fiancé of Bristol Palin is to walk down the aisle this weekend to exchange vows with his other baby mama, Sunny Oglesby.

Although Levi Johnston once seemed set on making a career out of clawing his way up the celebrity ladder, the former Playgirl model is now happily settled into a quiet life as an electrician in Alaska.

Sarah Palin on Levi Johnston's fatherhood falsehoods >>

"You couldn’t pay me enough to go back to that place," he previously told Inside Edition, recalling life in the limelight. "It just wasn’t who I was."

All seems to be going well with baby girl Breeze Beretta and Sunny Oglesby. A few weeks after her birth in early September, Levi Johnston shared, "Things are good. We're happy at night. We're a family, and that's good."

Levi Johnston wants custody of son after watching Life's A Tripp >>

Sunny Oglesby, for one, can't wait to get hitched. Writing on her Facebook page this week, the bride-to-be gushed, "Glad to finally have a ring on my finger."

Clearly head over heels for Levi Johnston, the new mom also shared a photo of bacon, hashbrowns and French toast, writing, "Sometimes you gotta get up at midnight and make your man exactly what he's craving to make him feel loved...even one handed with a baby on your hip... Love both my babies and would do anything for them."

No word yet on if Tripp Johnston, the groom's nearly 4-year-old son with former fiancée Bristol Palin, will be a part of the weekend wedding.
