Your baby’s health and development: What is normal?

$
0
0
It is hard to describe normal. What might be normal for one baby, is not for another. Don't compare your baby to your friends' or strictly follow the charts — instead shoot for individual milestones. There is a range of normalcy for every infant; each baby has his own personality and style of development.

Some babies are very motivated, while others are more oriented to talk or to develop fine motor skills. Others hate tummy time, and many long for it most of the day. There are loud and passionate babies and quiet observers. Regardless, help support each baby's individual development; they'll do things at different paces and show you what they want. There are four categories of infant development to keep in mind as your baby grows:

  • Language
  • Small motor development
  • Large motor development
  • Social

What can you do with your baby to help encourage his normal development?

Tummy time

This is a chance to get babies off of their backs; providing a break to the muscles that support back time and help strengthen neck muscles that will prepare babies to crawl. Tummy time is also noted to help babies push up, sit up, roll over and eventually stand. The benefits of this small practice are incredible in encouraging small and large motor skills.

Tummy time: Why it's essential for your baby's development >>

First steps

There is no set month when a baby might take her first steps, but it is a Kodak moment the second it happens. In order to help this development, try walkers. Do not completely rely on the walker as the baby might become lazy and only walk with the walker. Set up fun obstacles for Baby to hold onto as she begins to walk in a path.

Making memories: Celebrating your baby's first steps >>

Building balance

Sometimes after a baby has mastered tummy time, balance exercises naturally set in. When Baby becomes a bit stronger around 4 to 6 months, try propping the baby in a sitting position, helping him get a sense of balance. You can also use a Boppy or inner tube to help assist him in balancing.

Play time

Play helps infants become stimulated and begins to aid in the connection between nerve cells that will develop language, small and large gross motor skills and social development. The saying goes, play is child's work, and it is! Provide a comfortable and stimulating environment and Baby will begin her work. There is no such thing as too much play time for Baby.

Crawling on all fours

Usually after a baby can sit by himself, crawling begins. Again, each baby moves at a different pace and some might skip one step and go directly onto the next. Get on all fours and show Baby how to crawl — this might help entice him — and babies can learn by example. Don't feel bad — go ahead and entice him and put a couple toys out of reach. Sooner or later, Baby will start moving around to get to the toys and be more willing to test boundaries.

Treasure every moment of the special time, as once he gets going, he won't stop!

Sexy snaps of Sofia Vergara are being shopped

Sexy shots of Sofia Vergara were apparently stolen from fiance Nick Loeb's phone. We doubt the sexy actress has anything to be embarrassed about.

Sofia Vergara sexy photos

Get ready, boys: Sofia Vergara might have some sexy photos floating around out there — and drooling website owners are trying to their hands on them.

"The photos show Sofia in her bathroom and the bedroom, and, while they are personal, they are not fully revealing," a source tells the New York Post of the non-nude snaps. "But her management team are doing their best to make sure they do not become public."

Sofia Vergara dishes on her style and what’s next for Modern Family >>

The Modern Family star reportedly "looks fantastic" in the photos allegedly pilfered from fiancé Nick Loeb's BlackBerry. We have a hard time believing she's really that upset over the photos. After all, this is the same woman who showed off her thong-clad butt on Twitter during the Emmys. She knows her T&A is what made her a star — and she embraces it.

"I know [my breasts] have opened doors for me ... I want to show all this off while I still have it. I already know I am going to get a breast lift," she told CNN earlier this month. "Then, maybe one day, when I am done with being sexy, I will just get rid of them."

Julianne Hough does her best Sofia Vergara impression >>

Plus, we love her no-apologies approach to her curves. The Colombia native told The Talk last year that she's never fit into the size-0 samples given to her for events.

"Somebody told me: 'You have to lose weight because you're going to look bad in pictures. Looks at the other actresses — look how good they look,'" she said.

"I told her: 'They might look better in pictures but I look better naked.'"

We don't doubt it, Sofia.

Lil Wayne didn't have a seizure after all

Lil Wayne is getting better after an emergency trip to a Texas hospital on Thursday.

Lil Wayne didn't have a seizure

Lil Wayne's plane had to make an emergency landing in Texas on Thursday night after the rapper suffered a medical emergency on board. He was transported to a local hospital and spent several hours there before checking out around 6 p.m.

Wayne didn't suffer from a seizure, contrary to reports.

"Lil Wayne was successfully released from the hospital after being treated for a severe migraine and dehydration," his rep said in a statement. "He is at home on doctor mandated rest and will return to work soon. He appreciates all of his fans for their support and love."

Lil Wayne's big ego made Nicki Minaj bail on show >>

Dehydration seems to affect a lot of celebrities — it's one of Lindsay Lohan's favorite ailments. However, Weezy hasn't really complained of health problems during his career, but he did almost die from a self-inflicted gunshot wound when he was 12.

Lil Wayne denied entry, lets out lil whine >>

"Little Dwayne picked up the gun and began horsing around with it in front of a stereo blaring music. At about 1:15 p.m., the boy accidentally fired a bullet through his chest. The slug then shot out the lower left corner of a window," the New Orleans Times-Picayune wrote in a 2009 profile of the off-duty cop who saved him.

Lil Wayne: I’m retiring for my kids >>

"Somehow, it missed every vital organ. But the boy was dying. Dwayne dialed 911, wheezing as he spoke. As blood poured out of the wound and formed a puddle near the stereo, the operator pressed for details. 'You will find out when you get here,' the boy said, according to the police report."

After that, a little dehydration seems like a piece of cake.

iPad Mini: Is it worth it?

iPad mini
Skeptical over Apple's
pricey new gadget

introducing the iPad mini

Apple seems a bit conceited with its iPad Mini release. Will Apple fans just buy any device it makes — even poorly conceptualized ones like the iPad Mini?

The iPad Mini was available for preorders this morning at midnight Pacific time. Fans will be just shocked to learn that in just a few hours the iPad Mini is now back-ordered at least two weeks. We at SheKnows eyed this latest Apple creation with some serious skepticism: Are consumers simply desperate for any product new from Apple?

This pricey device is annoyingly expensive: $330 to $660

The iPad Mini is noticeably less expensive than the iPad 2 and iPad 3 — more so when comparing it to larger capacities — but all iPad Mini models lack the beautiful retina display of Apple's iPad 3. Moreover, the iPad Mini is still pricey; prepare to shell out at least $330 for the device.

Let's be honest: The iPad really shines when it's used for entertainment so forking over $330 for 16GB of space — Wi-Fi only mind you — is a bit ridiculous. Yes, the iPad Mini at this capacity is $70 cheaper than the iPad 2 and a painful $170 cheaper than the iPad 3. However, at this 16GB capacity, the iPad mini is also a glorified iPad Touch. The features are almost exactly the same except for the iPad Mini's dimensions. Except now you're paying $330 instead of $200, and you still don't get to enjoy the amazing experience of the retina display – which is included in the latest iPod Touch.

As you start to move up the capacity ladder, you will pay an additional $100 each time you double your space: 16GB is $330, 32GB is $430, and 64GB is $530. Of course, if you want to be able to use your iPad Mini with your cellphone network, brace yourself for sticker shock: 16GB is $460, 32GB is $560, and 64GB is $660!

Did someone have a problem with the "big" iPad?

The iPad Mini is about 4 inches smaller , and it weighs about three-quarters of a pound less than the iPad 2 and iPad 3. This is great. Except, and maybe I missed some fodder over the iPad 2 and iPad 3, was anyone actually complaining about their size? The standard iPad 2 and iPad 3 are already compact for traveling and still allow you to enjoy entertainment and internet surfing. Won't the iPad Mini take away from the entertainment experience?

And if you're justifying the smaller screen with the smaller price as I originally did, well, keep reading...

Gasp! Is the iPad Mini just a cool Amazon Kindle Fire HD?

The iPad Mini is about the same size as Amazon's Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Fire HD has extremely comparable features to Apple's iPad Mini. Uh oh. So now consumers can get the same features as the Apple iPad Mini for $130 less? You can even double your space with Amazon Kindle Fire HD for an additional $50, making a true price comparison of $430 for the 32GB iPad Mini and only $250 for the Kindle Fire HD!

As a true disclaimer, I am a committed Apple fan. I love the design of the iPad, and I do think the Apple iPad Mini looks nicer than the Amazon Kindle Fire HD. However, we are talking about a very significant price difference for no real iPad Mini advantage in features.

Final thoughts

The iPad Mini is likely for users who have yet to buy an iPad 2 or iPad 3. The cheaper price seems alluring at first until it becomes clear what features users are giving up — a beautiful retina display — and how the iPad Mini compares not only to Apple's other products but competitors as well.

Most users will be fine with 32GB of space. That being said, the issue then becomes if consumers want Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and cellular network capabilities. . I bet most people can't afford the nearly $600 price tag for the 32GB iPad Mini with the cellular network option, and let's not forget the charges from your cellphone provider for the added device .

So, at the end of the day the Amazon Kindle Fire HD is $250 or the iPad Mini is $430. Do you want to pay an addtional $180 for "aesthetics"?

Russell Crowe's ego and schedule are to blame

$

Russell Crowe has been famous for years for his temper, his ego and his carousing. It looks like all of that is finally catching up to him as he and his wife, Danielle Spencer, call it quits.

RussellCroweDaniellSpencerDivorce

Last week there were rumblings about the demise of actor Russell Crowe's marriage to his wife of nine years, Danielle Spencer. This week, it appears new details about the impending divorce are emerging.

The couple, who married in 2003 after years of an on-again, off-again relationship, has weathered many rumors over the years due to the Master and Commander's hot-headed temper and wandering eye. Two famous instances of misbehavior still stick in many people's memory because of the public nature of his temper tantrums and his large ego.

In 2003, while his wife remained home pregnant with their first child in Australia, Crowe was spotted in Hamburg at The Dollhouse, a well-known strip club in Germany. This was just seven months after they had walked down the aisle. To make matters worse, he was photographed by another patron and his temper got the best of him as he tried to make the shutterbug erase the photo in exchange for money. The photos were released despite an attempt from his legal team to obtain an injunction.

In 2005, the Oscar winner tore a phone off of a wall and threw it at a hotel concierge in New York City when he was trying to reach his wife and wasn't able to get through. However, other rumors persist that he was with another woman and trying to hide his infidelity. The actor was charged with second-degree assault and fined for his offense.

The couple has two boys, Charles, 9, and Tennyson, 6, but it seems the busy actor has spent very little time with his children or his wife in the last few years. He has been on the film set over the last eighteen months working on Man of Steel, Les Miserables, The Man with the Iron Fists and Noah. Spencer and the kids live in Rose Bay, an eastern suburb of Sydney, while Crowe has traveled the world for work.

There's been no official word from the Gladiator star except on his Twitter account, which has been documenting his fitness regime:  "yesterday 10km bike ride to work, 25 mins weights, 25mins yoga/stretch."

Spencer has been keeping busy with a stint on the Australian version of Dancing with the Stars and while she has kept mum, her partner, Damian Whitewood, revealed, "Once we’d wrapped and finished she said things weren’t great."

The couple does not have a pre-nuptial agreement, so expect this battle to be played out quite a bit in the coming months.

10 top wines for under $20

$

You have a fancy, upscale dinner party to attend at one of your wealthier friend's houses. You promised them you'd bring a bottle of wine but know you can't afford the $40 stuff they gave you for Christmas. Instead of blowing the bank on overpriced vino, bring one of these under $20 bottles! Don't let the price tag fool you, though — these are some of the most highly rated wines out there!

Variety of wine

From California to New York and all the way to Italy, these wines have received high marks against more expensive bottles. Trust us, the only person who will know how much you spent is you! These wines were chosen by the experts at Food & WineDelishWine Spectator and The Reverse Wine Snob!

10

Porca de Murca Douro, 2009

This Portugal favorite scored over 90 points in the Wine Spectator ratings and has been completely sold out on wine.com for months. So why is this wine so good? It's made with a blend of port grapes, which gives it a hearty but not too heavy texture. According to the folks at Delish, this wine has a tart, fresh cherry flavor but a very earthy and humble finish. This wine would pair wonderfully with a bowl of hearty beef stew. If the flavor and high marks aren't enough to persuade you to try it, what about the price tag, which is around $7 per bottle? To snag a bottle, check out Astor Wines!

9

Mumm Napa Brut Prestige

You can't have a list of great wines without including one bottle of bubbly, right? This nonvintage from Napa Valley received high marks from Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator . This mix of primarily pinot and chardonnay grapes gives this sparkling wine a layered flavor filled with floral notes and tons of citrus and fruit. Because of the lush fruit flavors, we'd pair this wine with a lemon zest angel food cake. You also can't go wrong with the price, just $20!

8

Kirkland Signature Rutherford Napa Valley Meritage, 2010

You can't beat a good bottle of wine that you can buy at Costco! This Napa Valley Meritage is made up of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot and cabernet franc grapes. This wine was a top pick by the Reverse Wine Snob for its dry and long finish. We love its medium body and the spice you get from the mixture of the different grapes. This pairs well with bold cheeses like goat, so serve it alongside this tomato and goat cheese quiche. You can buy this at most Costco stores for about $13 a bottle.

7

Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Chardonnay, 2010

Kendall-Jackson has always been a great bang for your buck, but this 2010 chardonnay takes it to a whole new level. For just shy of $20, this high-rated wine is rich and creamy, with delicious hints of vanilla and cinnamon. Unlike many chardonnays, this isn't overly buttery, but instead has a very smooth, slightly fruity finish. Chardonnays pair well with mild poultry, so serve this bottle with a classic roasted chicken.

6

Napa Cellars Merlot, 2010

If you're not a big merlot fan because of how heavy and dry it is, give the grape another chance with this luscious wine. For about $16 a bottle, you can't beat it! This wine has a very fruity, bold flavor but is not as overwhelming as typical varieties of merlot. The finish is complex and slightly oaky. Pair this bottle with this crispy-spiced duck breast.

5

Chateau Ste. Michelle Cold Creek Vineyard Riesling, 2010

If you aren't sure what kind of wine to get, a bottle of Chateau Ste. Michelle will never disappoint, especially this Cold Creek riesling. Made in the Columbia Valley of Washington, this crisp, sweet and tart white is one of the top 20 highest rated wines under $20 on wine.com. Unlike many rieslings, this bottle is fresh and clean without being overly sweet or syrupy. We paired ours with this spicy three-bean chili, but any spicy dish will pair well with it!

4

Columbia Crest Grand Estate Merlot, 2008

A 2008 vintage for $12 isn't easy to find, especially from a top-notch winery like Columbia Crest. This 2008 received an 89 rating from Wine Spectator, naming it one of the best value wines. This merlot is made up of 90 percent merlot, 5 percent cabernet sauvignon and 5 percent cab franc, which gives it a slightly lighter, more fruity finish than other merlots. We love the caramel, nutty flavors as well, which make this the perfect wine to pair with one of these decadent dark chocolate dessert recipes.

3

Chateau Tanunda Shiraz Grand Barossa, 2008

This is easily one of the best shirazes we've ever tasted. This 2008 scored one of the coveted spots in Wine Spectator's annual top 100 wines of the year list for 2011. This medium-bodied wine has notes of blackberry and plum, with a slight aftertaste of cracked black pepper and spice. This dark wine also received a rating of 92 points. If you can find it, it goes for $18. Shirazes pair well with lamb, so we recommend having a glass with these lamb steaks.

2

Buehler Zinfandel, 2010

This top rated  falls right under our $20 budget at $19.99. Like many zinfandels, the Buehler has a fresh, fruity taste, with hints of cherry in each sip. You also get a rich vanilla aftertaste and even a hint of spice. What makes this particular zinfandel a must-have is how light it is in body and flavor. Pair this with some old-fashioned BBQ ribs.

1

Domaine Jean Descombes
Morgon, 2009

With a rating of 93 and a spot in the top 50 wines of 2011 by Wine Spectator as well as a rating of 91 by Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate, we knew this wine was going to talk a big game. What we didn't expect was how fruity, sweet and even florally the finish would be. In addition to floral and fruity , each sip has a definitive spiciness to it. Plus, for just $15, this amazing French wine can be yours. You really can't beat a budget-friendly wine that tastes like it should cost in the upper 50-dollar range.

Katy Perry rocks the vote in a latex dress

Katy Perry publicly announces her vote for president in a most unusual way: her dress.

KatyPerryBarackObamaDress

It looks like President Barack Obama can add one more vote to his re-election campaign. Singer Katy Perry officially endorsed the president at a rally in Las Vegas on Wednesday night.

This comes as no surprise to her fans since the Grammy Award nominee played at another Obama event in Los Angeles earlier in the month. This time, though, Perry chose to reveal her vote in a rather unusual way: her dress.

The tight, white latex dress featured a ballot box with the names of the president and his contender, Mitt Romney, clearly featured down the front. The only difference was the ballot box visibly filled in next to Obama's name.

The dress was revealed during her second song after her backup dancer pulled off her original outfit. The form-fitting dress showcased her fit body and was accessorized by her red Mary Janes.

Playing to a crowd of 13,000 people, her five-song set featured her mega-hit "Firework" as the finale. She encouraged the Nevada audience to get out there and exercise their right to vote by saying, "Don't wait. Go tomorrow."

The America Forward Grassroots concert was held in an area just northwest of downtown Las Vegas. The event was also featured on Thursday night's Rock Center episode during an exclusive interview with NBC's Brian Williams and the president.

Another famous face also made an appearance during that broadcast: Perry's 91-year-old grandmother, who is a longtime resident of the state of Nevada. It seems that her grandmother caused a bit of mischief during the evening's events, leaving a lipstick mark on Obama's cheek.

He jokingly said, "I've got to know Katy and she's a wonderful young lady. And I can tell that part of it is because of her outstanding grandma, a 50-year resident of Nevada. The only thing I have to say is she got some lipstick on me when she kissed me. Fortunately somebody wiped it off before Michelle saw it. I'm telling you, you're going to get me in trouble!"

Clearly the president had a great time, but it seems like the "Teenage Dream" singer was even more impressed as she tweeted, "So tonight was a great night! The PRESIDENT gave grandma and I unforgettable shout outs & now I am officially 28! Best. birthday. Ever.''

Semisonic's Dan Wilson up for his first Country Music Award

$
0
0
Even though his band Semisonic released their last album more than ten years ago, Dan Wilson has stayed in the industry. He has has helped write songs for some of the biggest names in music and has now been nominated for his first Country Music Award.

Dan Wilson

Those who remember the song "Closing Time" from the late 1990s may think the band Semisonic was a one-hit wonder. And even though the band is not regularly together anymore, you probably hear music similar to theirs everywhere you go. That is because the lead singer of the band is working with some of today's biggest artists — as a songwriter.

Earlier this year, Dan Wilson was part of the Grammy Award–winning team that co-wrote "Someone Like You" with Adele. He also co-wrote the tracks "Don't You Remember" and "One and Only" from her album 21. The album ended up winning Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

Wilson also won a Grammy for the Dixie Chicks' 2006 album Taking the Long Way, for which he co-wrote six songs, including the Song of the Year, "Not Ready to Make Nice." The album ended up winning the band a total of six Grammy Awards.

And next week, Wilson will be up for his first Country Music Award, for the song "Home" by Dierks Bentley, which Wilson co-wrote with Bentley and Brett Beavers. The song came from Bentley's 2012 album Home and reached number one on the Billboard Singles Country chart. Wilson has attended most of the Grammy ceremonies he has been invited to, and chances are, he will be with Bentley at the CMAs.

Wilson has also contributed to albums by artists like Josh Groban, Weezer, Pink, Katy Perry and Jason Mraz. And it's possible Wilson will be back at the Grammy Awards next year, because he contributed to Taylor Swift's new album, Red. He co-wrote the songs "Come Back... Be Here" and "Treacherous."

But Wilson's own band still hasn't won a Grammy, even though in 1999, they were nominated for Best Rock Song, for "Closing Time." They lost to Alanis Morissette and her song "Uninvited," but it sounds like Wilson is doing just fine now. After the third Semisonic album in 2001, he decided to focus more on songwriting and production. He is a Minneapolis native but now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.

iPad Mini: Is it worth it?

$

It's a girl for Lisa Ling

On Anderson Cooper's show, Lisa Ling shares the good news that after a heartbreaking miscarriage in 2010, she is now expecting a baby girl!

LisaLingPregnant

TV journalist Lisa Ling announced earlier this week that she and her husband, physician Paul Song, are expecting their first child. The exciting news comes after heartbreak in 2010, when the Our America host publicly shared her thoughts after suffering a miscarriage.

She revealed that the experience made her feel like "a complete failure." The event inspired her to create a website called Secret Society of Women, which allows women to safely swap stories on any topic.

The site's mission is to "offer women a confidential community to freely share thoughts and advice, and by doing so, to learn from each other. What you'll find here is that no matter what the topic may be, you're not alone. There are others like you who may have had similar experiences and can offer perspectives about whatever is on your mind."

While the former View co-host has generously shared her sorrows with the public, she was thrilled to be able share her happy news with TV audiences. Ling gave the baby news exclusively to Anderson Cooper on his daytime talk show, Anderson Live. She brought along a sonogram and also announced she was having a girl.

The OWN star is starting her sixth month of pregnancy, and she admitted on Access Hollywood Live today that "I've just been trying to be very, very cautious about everything... with diet, with exercise."

It is understandable that the first-time mom is taking a safe course of action, but overall, she's having a great pregnancy.

She explained, "I've been so lucky — I have felt completely normal this entire time. Other than the fact that I feel like I'm getting this big gut, I didn't have any morning sickness or anything."

The 2012 CMAs: A city slicker's guide to country music

$
0
0
If you're a city slicker and you've always felt a little left out because you aren't familiar with country music, you are not alone. Country music appreciation can be hard to come by when you know more about Christian Louboutin shoes than cowboy hats. Still, country music isn't just for rednecks with chain saws who go noodling on the weekends . Here’s your guide to country music appreciation.

Honey Boo BooDo your homework

Tune into Swamp People, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo or pretty much any show where subtitles are necessary for English-speaking folks. Here you'll learn how to speak hillbilly, the tenets of redneck society and several ways to prepare mac-n-cheese. These programs are vastly entertaining, and mock if you will, but every city slicker should have a redneck in his or her hip pocket if s*** goes down. If the world ends tomorrow, you'll need someone who knows how to live off the land, catch a catfish using a forearm as bait, and use mud and duct tape in a hundred different ways. After watching a few of these shows, you should develop a fondness for banjos — oh, and antibiotics.

Twang it all!

Country music has its own accent, called twang. This happens when a person speaks ordinary English until he or she puts on a cowboy hat, worn jeans and cowboy boots — and steps in front of a mic. This very same person will develop a drawl and a twang and all of sudden start saying stuff like, "y'all," "slap the dog and spit in the fire" and "son of a biscuit." Go to your local honky-tonk bar, and you'll see what we mean. When at home, try dropping a "dagnabbit,” or describe someone as "nuttier than a squirrel's breakfast." Once you've developed an ear for twang and hillbilly-speak, your journey to better appreciating country music will have begun.

It's not for the weak

Wait until you're in a good frame of mind before beginning your country music education. If you are easily depressed, you are ill advised to listen to this genre of music by yourself. Have you seen the e-card that says, "Country music is just about people cheating on their wives, then shooting their dog and eating it for dinner"? Extreme though this example may be, it makes a valid point. At least with the blues, we know what type of music we are in for, and we know to not listen to it if we've officially bottomed out. But country music can be a little sneaky that way. Listen with caution if you are in a fragile place. We'd never suggest that country music will make a city slicker want to end it all, but it is best enjoyed when your coping skills are not compromised.

Start out with the classics

A good place to start your country music appreciation is with the classics. The outlaw tunes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams Jr. are what made country music as popular as it is today. These early rebels were all about whiskey and doin' things their way . Dial up a little "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean," "A Country Boy Can Survive," "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" and "Folsom Prison Blues." If you're serious about falling in love with country music, start with "Seven Spanish Angels" by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles, and feel free to belt out "well, well well" every time they say "in the valley of the gun."
