When your young adult is ready to move out, how far will you let her go? Help your teen evaluate the pros and cons of dorm versus off-campus living.

Where will your college freshman live?

Now that your child has chosen a college, it's time to select living arrangments. Unless your child is commuting to a school within driving distance, he or she will have to secure living arrangments either on or off campus.

Friendships

Dorm: All of the students living in the dorm are in the same situation, and that creates a positive social experience. As roommates and neighbors, they have each other when home seems so far away.
Apartment: Apartment living can be the ideal arrangement for friends who are attending the same school. Living with a high school friend might make the transition to college less frightening.

I do regret not doing at least my freshman year on campus. I met a lot of people and had a lot more experiences that I couldn’t get with off-campus housing. ~Danielle

10 Dorm safety tips for college kids >>

Privacy

Dorm: Dorms aren’t private. Your child will likely share a bedroom with at least one other student. He’ll also share a bathroom with many other students, and he’ll share common areas with still more.
Apartment: If it's affordable, consider an apartment that offers a separate bedroom for each renter. The only way to truly guarantee privacy in an apartment, however, is to rent one without roommates.

20 College essentials >>

Convenience

Dorm: Dorms are typically right on campus, so your child won’t have to deal with traffic and parking — and there’s no excuse to miss or be late for class!

Top iPhone apps for college students >>

Apartment: Apartment living might be just the ticket, however, for a student who also has an active off-campus life. Students who work in addition to attending school, for example, may find that a centrally-located apartment offers more convenience than one on campus.

Food

Dorm: Your kid gets three squares a day without having to spend valuable study time to grocery shop, cook and wash dishes... but it’s cafeteria food. ‘Nuff said.
Apartment: On the plus side, your child can eat whatever he wants.

Why college freshmen gain weight >>

Mom tip: When Abby’s son moved into an apartment with three of his good friends, the roomies decided that they would split the food costs four ways. “The arrangement lasted about a week,” said Abby. “One of the roommates ate everyone else’s food plus his own.”

Safety

Dorm: Most dorms, on the other hand, enforce curfews and are tied in to campus security. That offers a little peace of mind, right Mom?
Apartment: Off-campus apartments are not as safe as on-campus residences. Buildings are not secured at night, and there's no guarantee that close neighbors are also students.

5 Celebrity college confessions >>

Money

Dorms: You pay one price up front, and your child doesn’t have to worry about coming up with money for gas, food and utilities. And the price you pay is tied in to the school year — you don’t have to worry about signing a 12-month lease and finding someone to sublet your child’s room when school’s not in session.
Apartment: Some parents believe that their kids can afford an apartment for less than what it might cost to stay in a dorm. For example, your child might not need a full meal ticket. Don't forget to add in the associated costs: car, car insurance, gas, parking, food, utilities and renter's insurance.

My son stayed in a four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment about a mile from campus. He was comfortable with it, which made his transition to college life easier. And his apartment didn’t cost much more than a dorm. ~Jeanette

Turkey-decorated cupcakes

$

0
It’s a little bit early to start thawing out the turkey for your autumnal gathering, but in keeping with this week’s Craft Wars Thanksgiving theme, I thought it would be fun to show you my buttercream bird recipe.

Turkey cupcake

My Glitterville forefathers would have most likely brought these festive fowl to the table of that most noted luncheon oh-so-long ago! These tasty turkeys, made from chocolatey cupcakes topped with real buttercream frosting and candy trims, far exceed the boundaries of the kid's table.

Turkey cupcakes

Yields approximately 12 cupcakes

Ingredients:

Cupcakes

  • Chocolate cupcake mix of your choice
  • Buttercream frosting
  • Dark chocolate morsels, melted
  • White chocolate morsels, melted
  • Decorator bags
  • Wax paper
  • Cookie sheet or pan
  • Candy corn
  • Red jelly beans
  • Red food coloring

Frosting

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 4-6 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 cup sifted cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Prepare and bake cupcakes according to package instructions.
  2. To make the frosting, place butter in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add four cups of confectioners' sugar, milk and vanilla.
  4. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about three to five minutes.
  5. Gradually add the cocoa and remaining sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition until the icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency. If mixture is too soft, add more sugar; if too thick, add more milk until you reach the right consistency.
  6. Use and store the icing at room temperature because icing will set up if chilled. Icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days.

Decorating directions:

1

Frost the cupcakes

Cover the tops of your cupcakes with the chocolate buttercream using a knife to create feathery peaks or with a decorator bag fitted with the star tip . Shape the head by putting an extra dollop of frosting on one side.

Frost the cupcake

2

Create chocolate decorations

To make the turkey tail feathers, fill two disposable decorator bags with melted chocolate, dark in one and white chocolate in the other. Snip the tip off of the decorator bag, using a pair of scissors, and pipe the dark chocolate outline of the feathers onto a wax paper-lined sheet pan, followed by the white chocolate to fill in the centers. Create the eyes using the same technique and place in freezer to chill until hard , then remove from freezer and peel off the paper.

3

Make turkey trimmings

Assemble the tail by pushing your piped chocolate feathers into the frosting across the back in a fan shape. Next, add a piece of candy corn for his beak and a few additional pieces to add more color and to give him wings. Complete his look with a bit of red frosting on the top of his head and a red jelly bean for his waddle!

SheKnows Exclusive: Jillian Michaels

Back in May, fitness guru Jillian Michaels announced that she adopted a 2-year-old daughter from Haiti named Lukensia, but that wasn't the only news. The same week that she brought her daughter home, Michaels' longtime partner, Heidi Rhoades, gave birth to a son — Phoenix.

Now the mother to both a toddler and an infant, Michaels is finding ways to stay fit, have fun and enjoy time with her new family. We had the opportunity to talk to her about fitness, nutrition and more.

Staying fit with little ones

When you have babies and young kids, it seems impossible to find another minute in the day. So for many moms, their own fitness and health fall by the wayside. However, thanks to jogging strollers, mommy-and-me fitness classes and other alternatives, you can find ways to work out with little ones.

"It can definitely be hectic with a baby and a toddler at home," says former The Biggest Loser trainer. "Time is of the essence every day, but it's crucial to get a workout in. It is important for moms to be healthy for their kids and set a good example for them early on. In my own life I do my best to maximize the time I do have to work out. This means doing harder, more efficient workouts to get results in less time. Multitasking is key — which is great because moms are already masters of that, right? Train multiple muscle groups at the same time to maximize calorie burn and shave off time."

Setting an example

Though it may take a little extra work, it's important that you get active with your children — not just drop them at the daycare at the gym or leave them home with your partner every time.

"It's key to be active with your kids."

"It's key to be active with your kids," Michaels explains. "I like to take the baby in the Bjorn for hiking or the toddler in a side car for a bike ride. I take them for jogs with my jogging stroller, and we love to play on the beach. Sometimes I even paddle board with my toddler in tow. It is important to get them involved and teach them to lead a healthy lifestyle early on. Now is the time to teach them habits that will last their entire lives."

Serving healthy snacks

Moms on the go need snacks that can go with them. That doesn't mean candy bars, cookies and other sugary treats, however. You can find a number of convenient yet healthy options for your little ones — carrot sticks, cereal bars, squeezable yogurt, natural apple sauce packets and so on.

"There are so many great snacks that you can throw in a purse or diaper bag to have available throughout the day. Organic, low-fat string cheese, hummus and carrots, bananas, or Happy Tot or Plum Organics fruit puree," says Michaels. "I even allow the kids to have treats . If your kids have a sweet tooth, stick to a better choice. I love Unreal chocolate treats for my kids because they are all natural with no chemicals, corn syrup or other things that don’t belong in their little bodies. Moderation is still key — you don’t want your kids eating an entire bag of sugar but these are a better choice for a small treat. I also love Popchips. They come in small, single-serving size bags and are all-natural, so they are a much better choice than the other things lined up in that chip aisle."

Getting kids to eat veggies

Try bento boxes
Get creative and make this funny face bagel bento box for lunch. You'll love making it as much as your kids will love eating it.

A big challenge for many moms is getting their kids to eat their vegetables. Michaels offers these tips to get your picky children to eat more healthfully:

  • Involve them - Take your kids to a farmers market. Start a little garden in your yard or at a community garden space. Peas go over great with my 2-year-old. Have them get involved with cooking the food so they take ownership of it.
  • Make it fun - Choose bright colored fruits and veggies and cut them into bite-size pieces.
  • Try negotiating - To get my toddler to try new things, I tell her that if she takes a bite of the avocado she can have a bite of pasta.
  • Be sneaky - Hide the veggies if you have to do it. I use products like Macro Greens chocolate powder to make her smoothies, or the Plum Organics fruit and veggie purees also work great.
  • Use cheese or a dash of sauce - My daughter will eat lettuce because she loves Caesar dressing. So we put a light spread on a bunch of romaine leaves and she goes to town. Cheese on broccoli is the oldest trick in the book. Just make sure the sauces [and dressings] are healthy and use them in moderation.

Finding "me" time

You can't take care of your family if you don't take care of yourself. That means eating right, exercising regularly and finding a little "me" time. Time to yourself is important for your physical and emotional health and wellness.

"Planning is key when it comes to finding 'me' time."

"Planning is key when it comes to finding 'me' time," says Michaels. "I try to use that me time to get a workout in. This means squeezing it in during nap time or right after the kids are in bed for the night. Asking a family member to watch them for an hour so you can take a jog . You can also trade off with your spouse and take turns exercising while the other watches the kids."

Getting an energy boost

"When it comes to energy, there is no question that being a mom takes a whole lot of it," Michaels says. "Sometimes I’m stunned at how much energy they have in those little bodies and how much of my energy it takes to keep up with them. For me it is key to stay physically fit and to eat right. I also discovered EBoost. It is an all-natural clean energy drink packed with vitamins, nutrients and green tea extract to give me that energy punch. It comes in handy packets that I can just stick in my bag and mix with water on the go... which is pretty much always."

ESPN's Skip Bayless: Aging Derek Jeter juices

$
0
0
The ESPN commentator America loves to hate, Skip Bayless, is once again showing why there are multiple Facebook accounts dedicated to hating on the 60-something host.

Derek Jeter steroids?

On the heels of baseball standouts Melky Cabrera and, most recently, Bartolo Colon testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, ESPN's Skip Bayless is saying baseball's golden boy, Derek Jeter, is using as well.

Wednesday "HGH," "PED" and "Jeter" were trendy on Twitter, thanks to Bayless sounding off on ESPN's First Take about the 38-year-old ballplayer's age-defying performance with the New York Yankees this season.

"I am shocked by what I am seeing from Derek Jeter right now -- in 2010, two seasons ago, he hit a career low 270," one of ESPN's answers to shock jock said. "All of the sudden, this man turns 38 years old in June and already he has more hits than last year in 2011, and already he has doubled his home run total."

"I am seeing a whole new guy," Bayless continued, stressing he "defended" critics who formerly said Jeter was "washed up."

Derek Jeter's autographed souvenir to his one-night stands >>

While Bayless contended Jeter still had life in him, even while knocking on 40, he said there was "no way" he could have seen him being an MVP candidate.

"Are you kidding me?" he said, through interruptions from fellow mouthy anchor Stephen A. Smith. "You would have to have your head in the sand or your head somewhere else to not at least wonder, 'How is he doing this?'"

Bayless further brought up Victor Conte -- who did time for his role in distributing steroids -- and his assertion that "many of the top players in baseball… say there is rampant use of synthetic drugs in the sport of baseball today."

No doubt, both San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera and, as of Wednesday, Bartolo Colon of the Oakland A's have been suspended for 50 games after failing drug tests.

Minka Kelly steps up to the plate with Jeter, again >>

Bayless contends that the performance-boosting Human Growth Hormone is only tested for once by the MLB -- and that's during spring training, insinuating that some HGH users, including star players like Jeter, could fall through the cracks.

The insinuation that Jeter uses drugs to get an edge in his advancing age not only rocks Yanks' worlds but all of baseball because, through the years, he has been looked upon as untouchable. With the exception of his dating life -- lest we forget he dated Mariah Carey back in the 1990s and has been linked to actresses Jordan Brewster, Minka Kelly and Jessica Biel -- even TMZ appears to have taken an off-limits approach to the sports star. And maybe that's because, well, there's "Nothing here to see, folks. Move on."

Or maybe it's all in the perception.

Back in 2010, Jeter's name came up during the latest scandal over performance enhancers. Jaws seemed to drop at the mere mention that Jeter was somehow involved.

New York baseball blogger Sean Pidgeon put it like this: "If any baseball player is worthy of canonization, it’s St. Derek. Jeter has been long known to succeed with poise, intangibles, and that preternatural baseball instinct that only comes with an almost mystical love of the game that only the greats have."

Talk about man love! Can "man love" blind fans from the truth? Or is Skip Bayless just being an idiot again?

Natalie Portman continues her partnership with Christian Dior with a sexy new ad campaign for Diorskin lip color.

Natalie Portman goes topless for Dior.

Natalie Portman steams up fashion as she goes topless for Dior. The beautiful photos for the Diorskin Nude ad campaign are tasteful and sultry. One photo shows Portman leaning over an expertly-placed sofa arm while another photo just shows Portman staring into the camera with a sexy side pose.

Natalie Portman keeps weekend wedding hush-hush >>

In the photos Portman wears her favorite Dior lipstick, 169 Grege, which is part of Dior's Diorskin Nude lip color line. "I chose the color Grege because it's the one I'd pick to wear myself," says Portman. The number [169] contains different dates that are important to me and my family."

Natalie Portman shows off baby Aleph >>

Always charitable, proceeds from 169 Grege will benefit the Free the Children Association, a non-profit organization that aims to increase educational opportunities for children in developing nations. In April 2012, Natalie Portman was named an ambassador for Free the Children. "As a mother and the organization's newest ambassador, I am grateful to Free the Children for giving me the opportunity to channel my passion and love of children into meaningful action that furthers the education and leadership of young women for years to come," said Portman.

Natalie Portman is also the face of Christian Dior's Miss Dior fragrance. Portman went topless for Dior back in January 2011 for a Miss Dior campaign. That campaign was far sweeter than the sultry campaign for Diorskin, but nonetheless sexy. People magazine reports this is Natalie Portman's first Dior ad since John Galliano was removed as head designer for the fashion label.

As duos, these flavors knock your taste buds into overdrive with the perfect mix of sweet and salty or rich and nutty. Because these ingredient pairs go so well together, we thought heck, why not mix them all up into one crispy, bite-size square? Which is exactly how these incredibly mind-blowing maple bacon crunch bars came to be.

Britney Spears takes us behind the scenes of the release of her latest project, the new Twister game.

Britney Spears Twister Dance

Want to play Twister with Britney Spears? Sounds like every guy's fantasy back in 1999. Well, now that dream is coming true… kinda. Spears is the first singer to revamp the classic game with a twist all her own.

Britney Spears' Twister Dance is an "awesome dance game [that] combines today's best dance music with the iconic Twister spots, providing a new way to learn hot, new dances. You'll love learning dance moves by following the lights from the Twister Dance console and dancing on the Twister spots," toymaker Hasbro told SheKnows.

Songs in Britney Spears' Twister Dance include a remix of Spears' "Till the World Ends," along with the following songs:

  • "Whip My Hair" by Willow Smith
  • "We R Who We R" by Ke$ha
  • "Cupid Shuffle" by Cupid
  • "Caught Up in a Twister," an exclusive track

Spears is even starring in an official video for the Twister Remix of "Till the World Ends," which is set for release on Sept. 9.

Jamie Lynn Spears unveils country song she wrote about Britney >>

The singer is quite the busy woman these days — she's gearing up for her primetime judging gig on The X Factor and her future wedding to fiance Jason Trawick. Contrary to rumors, she's not getting cold feet about walking down the aisle. Spears was spotted without her engagement ring last week, sparking questions about her commitment to Trawick.

Actually, it was all a misunderstanding.

"She was not wearing her ring last week at court because she took it off during an Elizabeth Arden [photo] shoot, and Jason was holding it for her," a source told People. "He simply forgot to give it back until later."

Simon Cowell was surprised at Britney Spears' personality >>

The couple won't get married until after she's done with this season of The X Factor, though.

"Even though Britney has been married before, she looks at her wedding to Jason as her real wedding," the source added.

We're excited to see Brit on television again! Until then, we'll be playing Twister Dance.

Justin & Jessica aren't married to their NYC home

Do Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel long for a simpler life? They're selling one piece of property in New York City.

Justin Timberlake selling New York City penthouse

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake might not be married yet, but they are trying to divorce. Divorce themselves from some property, that is. The acting pair is looking to unload Timberlake's Soho penthouse at 311 West Broadway, according to Trulia, the real estate agency handling the property. The former *NSYNC lead singer purchased the abode in 2010 for a staggering $6.56 million and has listed it at $7.65 million.

Not a bad return on a two-year investment, if he can get the asking price.

The penthouse "features 3 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, a gas-burning fireplace, and a large, private, set-back wrap terrace," according to Trulia. "A dramatic glass curtain wall and 10'2" high ceiling offer unparalleled light and stunning views of Soho and the Empire State Building."

It looks pretty amazing, judging from the photos.

We have to wonder why they're getting rid of the place. Maybe they're buying a place with room for kiddos? Biel recently revealed she wants to raise a family in the same place where she grew up.

"I would like those future little people to have the [same] experience that I had," she told InStyle in a new interview. "I love Colorado. I've always thought that could be a possibility for me."

She added that she looks to her parents as an example of how to have a successful marriage.

"The best thing I learned from [my parents] is that you have to put your relationship first," she added. "It is really easy to let that go by the wayside. It's easy to say, 'Hey. I’ll see you later. I love you.' And you can’t do that."

Kelsey Grammer seems disgusted with ex-wife Camille Grammer as he tells Oprah about the divorce.

Kelsey Grammer talks Camille and divorce on Oprah.

Kelsey Grammer isn't one to shy away from voicing his opinions. In a new interview with Oprah on an upcoming episode of Oprah's Next Chapter, Kelsey discusses everything from his career to his love life. In a preview of the Grammer-Oprah interview, Kelsey makes it clear he has zero affection for his ex-wife, Camille Grammer.

Kelsey Grammer thinks his GOP ties cost him an Emmy nod >>

Oprah starts of by summing up why Kelsey Grammer left Camille. Kelsey nods as Oprah explains, "You already knew your marriage was over. It had already gone on too long, according to you, because it was over when it started. It was a facade. But you lacked the courage to come home and say so." Kelsey confirms and goes on, "Yeah, I did. And I did believe that I owed something to that person. That I owed fame."

Kelsey and Kayte Grammer welcome child, reveal a tragedy >>

Shockingly, Kelsey Grammer goes to great lengths to avoid saying his ex-wife's name. Oprah asks, "You won't say her name?" Kelsey responds as he shakes his head, "No." Oprah then asks in disbelief, "You believe you owed [Camille] fame?" Kelsey nods and, in a subtle but very sarcastic tone, explains that Camille demanded fame as payment for the miserable life she endured with him over their fourteen-year marriage.

Kelsey Grammer sued for Ponzi scheme >>

Kelsey Grammer says, "Because [Camille] had given up so much to endure this horrible life she had with me… and I did believe what she said — and that is what she said." Oprah continues with her interview and says to Kayte Grammer that she is painted as "the other woman who stole [Kelsey] away from his marriage and children." As Kayte nods, Kelsey can't resist a laugh as he responds, "Yeah, right!"

You can check out the preview below. Oprah's Next Chapter with Kelsey Grammer airs Sunday, Aug. 26.

Justin Bieber to guest star on The Simpsons

The singer is almost five years younger than the show, but today he tweeted that he will be appearing on an episode of its 24th season.

Justin Bieber

Since The Simpsons debuted in 1989, many stars have lent their voices to the cartoon, including Keith Richards, Stephen Hawking, Simon Cowell, Patrick Stewart and Paul McCartney. Just last season, Lady Gaga had a whole episode devoted to her.

So it was no surprise when the producers of the cartoon confirmed today that Justin Bieber will be in an episode of their new season. But, unlike Gaga, Bieber will only be making a short appearance.

Bieber tweeted today, "Just did a voice over for the SIMPSONS!!! #swaggy." The tweet was deleted quickly, but the show did confirm it was true.

So, if not a full episode, what will Bieber's part be like?

"He tries to get into a talent show that Bart is playing piano in, and they won't admit him," executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly. "Draw your own conclusions."

The 24th season of the show kicks off in September, but Bieber's episode won’t air until 2013. The episode is called "The Fabulous Faker Boy."

According to Entertainment Weekly, other guest stars this season will include names such as Edward NortonSteve CarellZooey DeschanelAnne Hathaway and Natalie Portman. Jean also told Entertainment Weekly that Edward Norton's episode will have him playing the "most lovable minister in the world."

As for Bieber's part, don't expect the episode to be about him. But Jean insists you should still watch the entire episode.

"It's a cameo," he said. "But all of his fans should watch every minute of the show, before and after he's on."

Even with the short part, you can be sure all Beliebers will be watching the entire episode intently.

To make Bieber's appearance even more of a big deal, here's a thought: The Canadian singer was not born until more than four years after The Simpsons debuted as its own show in 1989, after three years of the title family appearing in animated shorts.

Jacqueline Laurita's son is autistic

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Jacqueline Laurita has revealed that her three-year-old son, Nicholas, is autistic.

Jacqueline Laurita's son is autistic

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Jacqueline Laurita managed to hide a big secret from reality television cameras last season: Her son, Nicholas, has autism. Laurita and her husband, Chris, started worrying that something was wrong when Nicholas was 18 months old.

"We had no idea what was going on," Laurita told People in a new interview, adding that Nicholas wasn't developing motor skills and wouldn't acknowledge people when they walked into the room.

"You never want to think that your child isn't perfectly healthy," she added of her son's diagnosis. "We didn't want to believe it was true."

50 Cent's autism tweet earns him a mom beatdown >>

The reality star did a lot of research about the illness after her son was finally diagnosed, but she still worries.

"I worry about him being independent when he's older," she admitted.

Laurita certainly isn't the only celebrity mom with an autistic child. Both Jenny McCarthy and Holly Robinson Peete are activists for autism awareness, thanks to their autistic sons.

"…There are extra, added layers of fears when you're talking about a kid with autism or who has some special-needs issue, Robinson Peete told USA Today earlier this year. "You worry about him being bullied, about [him] being treated unfairly. You worry about him doing the wrong thing in public and it being misconstrued."

However, children with autism can thrive, thanks to increased public understanding and new treatments.

"Fortunately, we have some pretty great organizations that can guide you. Autism Speaks is one of them. They have 100-day kits for the first 100 days after a diagnosis... And they have a lot of community resources and a database on their website," Robinson Peete continued. "You have organizations like ours, HollyRod, which gives compassionate care to families. We're working really hard to erect a compassionate care center where families can go."

10 Steps to school year success

One of the most important aspects of parenting is ensuring that your child gets a good education. School is a place where your child not only learns skills like reading and writing, but also about friendship, responsibility and fairness. In short, school is a test-run for the real world, and your child needs your help to navigate this complicated arena.

Back-to-school success

One of the most important aspects of parenting is ensuring that your child gets a good education. School is a place where your child not only learns skills like reading and writing, but also about friendship, responsibility and fairness. In short, school is a test-run for the real world, and your child needs your help to navigate this complicated arena.

When your child was a baby, you scheduled your life around nap times and diaper changes. Now your growing child needs you to schedule your life around school.

1

Establish consistent routines

Take the "year at a glance" approach. If you have a child starting first grade and one in fourth, one a musician and the other an athlete, then you must sketch out how you will achieve a balance between school, their activities, your work and your activities.

It's best to look at all of these areas at once so you can spot the trouble spots. Once you have the big picture, it's time to ask how you can set up a regular routine to ensure that everyone's needs are met -- including yours. Early in the school year, decide which activities will fit and which will have to be postponed. One of the biggest areas of concern for modern families is activity overload. Avoid it!

Now that you know what activities you'll do regularly, decide where homework fits and set a regular time for it. Whether there are assignments or not, this should be the time of day that your child always does a little school work, even if it's extra work assigned by Mom or Dad. When will you have dinner? If possible, do it at the same time every day and expect all family members to attend . Don't eat on the run! If you have to eat in the car to stay on schedule, then you're doing too much!

2

Set reasonable bedtimes

alarm clock

Open any magazine in America and you might find a story on the cumulative sleep debt that Americans are suffering from. It causes accidents, ill health and poor work performance. It has the same effect on young students. Without enough sleep, their learning suffers, as does their behavior.

Additionally, lack of sleep makes kids prone to getting sick, which means they miss school and get behind in their learning. Avoid these problems by setting a reasonable bedtime for your children and sticking to it. According to Jodi Mindell, Ph.D., a member of the National Sleep Foundation, elementary-aged children need between 10 and 12 hours of sleep each night. She also recommends adding an additional 10 to 20 minutes to that amount to account for the time is takes your child to fall asleep. Keeping these requirements in mind, your child's bedtime should be no later than 8:30 p.m.

3

Learn to say "no"

There are many demands placed on our time. There are after-school opportunities galore: sports, music, drama, art and more. Parents have an equal number of options for after-work activities. Parents want to provide the best for their children and many believe that giving them access to as many opportunities as possible is the best way to enhance their learning.

In fact, the best way to enhance a child's learning is to allow them to slow down and think about what happened in class and to talk to them about it. This type of reflection can only come when parents and children have some downtime together. We advocate the motto: Just Do Nothing.

4

Limit TV

We all love TV. We loved cartoons as kids, and probably sitcoms, dramas or reality shows now. But be careful not to watch TV to the exclusion of all other forms of entertainment. Kids aren't as good at moderating their exposure to TV. They need the help of their parents to make good choices and to limit the time spent being a passive observer. Kids learn best when they're actively involved in what they're doing. Reading, talking, exploring, drawing, building, playing -- these are all important parts of childhood. Make sure they don't get squeezed out by too much Phineas and Ferb.

How to raise happy, successful kids
Girl reading book

Back-to-school success

One of the most important aspects of parenting is ensuring that your child gets a good education. School is a place where your child not only learns skills like reading and writing, but also about friendship, responsibility and fairness. In short, school is a test-run for the real world, and your child needs your help to navigate this complicated arena.

5

Encourage reading

stack of books

Research has shown that one of the greatest predictors of academic success is the amount of time a student reads. When asked by parents what they should do to help their child learn, most teachers will answer, "get them to read!" Books not only open new worlds and ideas for children, they build their vocabulary, improve their memory, grow their imagination and teach them valuable thinking skills. Time spent reading is an investment in your child's future.

6

Support your child's teacher

It is an unfortunate fact of modern-day society that teachers feel less support from parents, administrations and governments than ever before. This is a shame, not only for the hard-working teachers who deserve to feel respected as professionals, but for the students they teach.

Students receive the best education when they're part of a committed triumvirate. For a child to truly learn in school, all three members of the team need to work together. The teacher, student and parents should all be working toward the same goal with commitment and help from one another. All points of the triangle must be connected for the goal to be met. Go against the tide -- give your child's teacher the respect she deserves and the support she requires. Your child will thank you .

7

Enlist support

It truly does take a village to raise a child. Too often these days, however, parents find themselves struggling to do it all with very little support. If you live near grandparents, aunts or uncles, ask if they can occasionally go to the soccer game or pick up the art materials or buy the new notebook.

Very often, it is the little tasks that combine to make parents feel overwhelmed. Spreading the small tasks around to willing volunteers may give you more time to focus on the important aspects of the school year. If family members aren't available to help, then exchange help with neighbors and friends.

8

Practice what you preach

To make the school year go more smoothly, it's important that your child is responsible, timely and well behaved. You are far more likely to have a child who behaves this way if you model appropriate behavior for them.

If you are frequently late, often forget important items, and are stressed and irritable most of the time, you're far more likely to have chronic problems with your children -- especially during the school year when time is tight. Give your child the skills to succeed by working on them yourself. Nobody's perfect, but if you show that you ask of yourself the same things you ask of them, then you're more likely to garner their cooperation.

In short, school is a test-run for the real world, and your child needs your help to navigate this complicated arena.

9

Plan ahead

If you fail to plan, then plan to fail. Harsh though that statement may be, it often happens that you'd experience more success at school if you'd take the time to plan ahead. If you know that your daughter is going to appear in a play during the month of May, which will require lots of rehearsals after school, don't enroll her in tap class and swimming until June.

When you know that time will be tight, it also makes sense to speak to your child's teacher to advise her of the situation and to get her help with scheduling homework. Always keep in mind what's coming up next week and what may be required due to the seasons. Getting to school in September may not be much of an issue, but what will you do when the snow falls?

10

Keep your eye on the prize

Being committed to managing the school year well takes effort. Keeping your family balanced despite all of the demands on everyone's time can be difficult. All of it can be managed better if you always stay focused on your purpose.

Your purpose as a parent is to raise well-adjusted children who can enter society and forge a good life on their own. They need a good education to do this. How to ensure your child receives the best education possible ought to be the first thing you think about in the morning and the thoughts you keep as you close your eyes at night.

Knowing that you've arranged your life around the essentials, despite how hectic life can be, will greatly enhance your sense of satisfaction. After all, as parents, it's rare that we receive kudos for a job well done, so we must learn to put first things first and then congratulate ourselves on our success.

Amber Portwood hands over full custody of Leah

Troubled Teen Mom star Amber Portwood is in prison for five years, so she opted to hand over full custody to on-again, off-again boyfriend Gary Shirley.

Teen Mom Amber Portwood signs over custody

Amber Portwood won't be able to take care of her daughter for the foreseeable future, thanks to her five-year prison sentence. We all wondered what she'd do about custody of her daughter Leah — and now we know, thanks to Tuesday night's epsiode of Teen Mom.

Portwood, 22, signed over full custody rights to on-again, off-again boyfriend Gary Shirley as the cameras rolled. Granted, Portwood still wasn't in the right frame of mind, but it was a step in the right direction. However, Portwood and Shirley only did it to get Child Protective Services off their backs.

7 leading ladies of reality TV we'd like to see share the slammer with Amber Portwood >>

Since filming, Portwood has started serving time for lying to a Madison County, Ind., judge about her drug use. She decided to go for the prison term instead of finishing her court-mandated rehab because she figured she'd end up in prison anyway.

"In my situation, I felt [that being] in the program, there were a lot of eyes on me. And it was uncomfortable," Portwood told E! Online. She said her fame had worsened her addiction problems. "I was not using my anti-psych medication, even," Portwood said.

The reality star couldn't get a handle on her addiction because she wasn't in charge of her body, addiction specialist Dr. Karen Khaleghi told SheKnows in June.

Can Amber Portwood change her life and be a good mom? >>

"An addict is not in the driver's seat of their life — addiction is," the Creative Care Malibu addiction specialist said. "They're not actively sitting down and going through their decisions and weighing out the pluses and minuses of what they do in their lives."

Will she beat it once and for all in prison? Maybe, but she has to actively work on it.

"She can expect hard knocks, that's for sure," Khaleghi said. "But if it's just hard knocks, and she doesn't understand how she got to the place emotionally that drives her addiction in the face of all rational things, she will continue to use."

Draped in gorgeous, Keira Knightley becomes Anna Karenina

The lush costume design found on Keira Knightley leaves little to be desired in this steamy, romantic adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece, Anna Karenina.

Anna Karenina

That hat, that scarf, that dress!

Our first thought upon seeing Tolstoy's masterpiece brought to the big screen in the first major U.S. production in more than a decade is...

Where can we get that hat? And that dress? Ooh-la-la! The costumes alone are going to make the new film adaptation of Anna Karenina worth watching.

Keira Knightley embodies the role of the title character, Anna Karenina, and her struggle to keep her powerful husband in the dark about her secret affair.

Keira Knightley: Just one of Hollywood's epic beauties >>

With costume design by British designer Jacqueline Durran, audiences are in for the kind of buttoned-up wardrobe that makes for the steamiest of romances. The film is set in chilly 19th century Russia, which means Durran will be mixing a bit of Victorian fashion with some powerful Eastern flare. Gorgeous hats, furs, luscious adornments and fabulous dresses are sure to be out in full form.

Durran received an Oscar nomination for her work on the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice, also starring Knightley as well as Matthew Macfadyen and Donald Sutherland. Durran has also designed for the films Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Atonement.

Instead, Anna's heart belongs to the passionate cavalry officer Count Vronsky, played by relative newcomer Aaron Johnson, who has previously appeared in The Illusionist and Nowhere Boy.

Rich costumes with an even richer story make for a indulgent film, although we hope some of the best parts of the movie are with no costumes at all.

Daniel Day-Lewis strikes a pose in the first poster for Lincoln, the Steven Spielberg drama that recounts the tumultuous presidency of the former lawyer.

Lincoln Poster

DreamWorks is rolling out the promotion for Steven Spielberg's new film, Lincoln. The biopic paints an intimate portrait of the former president, and stars Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role.

Daniel Day-Lewis playing Lincoln for Spielberg >>

According to the official synopsis, Lincoln is "a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th president's tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come."

Daniel Day-Lewis becomes Honest Abe in Spielberg’s Lincoln >>

Spielberg gathered a who's who of talent to bring the film to life. Aside from two-time Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field — who play Abraham and his wife Mary Todd, respectively — Spielberg cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt as their son Robert, Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens, James Spader as W.N. Bilbo and Hal Holbrook as Francis Preston Blair.

Sally Field joins the cast of Lincoln >>

Lincoln is based in part on the book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin. The screenplay was adapted by acclaimed writer Tony Kushner, who previously wrote Spielberg's Munich.

This will be one to watch this awards season. Many suspect that Day-Lewis' transformation could earn him another Oscar nod. But only time will tell.

Lincoln opens in select theaters Nov. 9 and expands Nov. 16.
