Silversun Pickups to Mitt Romney: Stop playing our song!

$

Like Somali artist K'Naan before them, Silversun Pickups is going after the Romney camp -- sending a cease and desist letter to the GOP frontrunner's campaign to stop using their song, "Panic Switch," as it travels the country drumming up support.

Romney Silversun Pickups

Silversun Pickups got its attorney involved after catching wind on Twitter that the alt-rock group's song, "Panic Switch," was played during Mitt Romney's stop in North Carolina.

"We don't like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don't like the Romney campaign," Lead singer Brian Aubert said in the statement, by way of the Associated Press. "We're nice, approachable people. We won't bite. Unless you're Mitt Romney!"

Devo's ode to Mitt Romney's dog, "Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro!"

"We were very close to just letting this go because the irony was too good. While he is inadvertently playing a song that describes his whole campaign, we doubt that 'Panic Switch' really sends the message he intends," the musician continues.

No joke, Aubert. "Panic Switch" addresses the "red views" that "keep ripping the divide." A career politician like Romney, who is so often criticized for his lack of authenticity and backbone, probably wants to shed lyrics like the following: "Could I be anything you want me to be. It's always meant to be seen."

Then there's the reference to "pink slip" -- not exactly a characteristic we'd think Bain Capital's golden boy would want to promote, considering claims that he's "no mercy" when it comes to widespread layoffs.

In response to the cease and desist letter received from the L.A.-based band's attorney, the Romney camp contends "Panic Switch" was played by accident --- as the campaign was setting up for an event.

"That said, it was covered under the campaign's regular blanket license, but we will not play it again," a spokesperson said.

Tim Pawlenty's unlikely crush? Lady Gaga > >

According to the AP, the campaign has licensing agreements with BMI and ASCAP, which apparently means it was protected from legal action for using the song; however, the band's publicist says otherwise -- that the song's use wasn't covered.

This isn't the first time a musician has gone after the Romney campaign for using a song.

Earlier this year, Somalia-born rapper K'Naan called for Romney to stop using "Wavin' Flag" -- the World Cup anthem -- during campaign stops.

"I have not been asked for permission by Mitt Romney's campaign for the use of my song. If I had been asked, I would certainly not have granted it,” K'Naan said in a statement published by CNN in February. “I would happily grant the Obama campaign use of my song without prejudice."

The AP takes an even bigger step back in time, reminding us of the controversy surrounding the Reagan campaign's use of Springsteen's "Born in the USA" and, more recently, Michelle Bachmann's face-off with Tom Petty for using his "American Girl" during her bid.

Aside from that whole "the GOP is destroying itself, thanks to its warring factions," the party has another problem on its hands: the Dems have all the good music! .

Robert Downey Jr.'s got a boo boo. The actor recently injured himself while filming the blockbuster Iron Man 3. Disney and Marvel are playing it safe, and have pulled the plug on the shoot.

Robert Downey Jr

Marvel's next big production has been put on ice -- temporarily. Filming on Iron Man 3 has halted due to an injury suffered by Robert Downey Jr. The actor plays the film's title character, so if he's hurt, we all feel the pain.

Has Iron Man met his match in Ben Kingsley? >>

According to HitFix, Marvel Studios released a statement revealing that Downey sustained a minor setback while on the set. And no matter how small, they're taking the necessary precautions.

"Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of Iron Man 3 in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt. There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates."

Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man 3 make big splash at Comic-Con >>

They didn't confirm when shooting will resume, but they should be back sooner rather than later. There's been no change made to Iron Man 3's release date, which is set for May 3. So that's a good sign.

This is the first time we've heard of such an incident occurring on the Iron Man set. For the most part, Downey has managed to avoid injury and stay unscathed. But no one is invincible, not even the mighty Tony Stark.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black and has been in production since June. Aside from Downey, the film stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau and newcomers Sir Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall.

We wish Downey a speedy and safe recovery!

Teaching teens about identity theft

Once your teens venture out into the world, they are on their own to make choices about who they share their personal information with. Walk any college campus and you will see countless offerings of free T-shirts or gift cards in exchange for your child’s private information. How can you teach them when to give out personal information and when not to?
Teens are vulnerable — especially in college

Is your teen's identity safe?

Once your teens venture out into the world, they are on their own to make choices about who they share their personal information with.

Walk any college campus and you will see countless offerings of free T-shirts or gift cards in exchange for your child’s private information. How can you teach them when to give out personal information and when not to?

Most adults are diligent about protecting their identity and credit from being misused or stolen, but what about your teenager’s information? When children are young, their parents maintain control of personal identifiers such as social security numbers and bank accounts. When teenagers start to fill out employment applications or college admission forms they have easy access to this personal information, making it harder for parents to protect them.

Are teens really at risk?

It is easy to assume that since your teen hasn’t established credit in his name that his identity is safe. According to Greg Meyer, community relations manager at Meriwest Credit Union, “The social security number of a 14-year-old is just as good as one from a 40-year-old — often better as there is no past history. When a minor's social security number is used to access a credit report, the reports are usually squeaky clean.” Fraudulent activity can go on for quite some time without being detected.

"Teach him to always ask why a social security number is needed... "

Keep it secret

One of the most important things to teach your teen is to rarely give out her social security number. Many applications and businesses will ask for it, but sharing it leaves your teen vulnerable. Teach him to always ask why a social security number is needed, and to only give it out when absolutely necessary — like in doctor’s offices or at the bank.

What to know about your teen's first job >>

Internet safety

Since there are various ways in which identity thieves can access their information, teens need to be vigilant in all aspects of their life. Julie Cook, certified financial planner at Savant Capital Management, shares a few tips on how teens can protect their identity while using their computers and other devices.

  • Keep anti-virus software up-to-date on all computer devices, including smartphones.
  • Use strong passwords with a mix of letters, symbols and numbers. Make them at least six characters long and change them every three weeks. Avoid using passwords such as birthdays, common words or the last four digits of your social security number.
  • Use cloud computing with caution.
  • Be extra cautious in choosing the information you share on social media websites.

Banking smarts

How can your teen protect his banking information? Mitchell Weiss, author and adjunct professor of finance at the University of Hartford Barney School of Business offers these tips.

  • Safeguard all confidential information — especially paper checks.
  • Create separate passwords for the different types of online accounts that you manage. For example, your banking and credit card account passwords should be entirely different from your shopping site passwords and your email passwords.
  • Never share your PINs and passwords with anyone under any circumstances.
  • Do your ATM transactions on your bank's own ATMs and never use a keypad that can be seen by others or, for whatever reason, seems to have been tampered with.
  • Never do your banking or any other confidential transacting in a public place or via an open Wi-Fi.

Help your teen protect her identity now to avoid serious problems in the future.

ParaNorman star Leslie Mann strives to be a mom who listens

SheKnows caught up with Leslie Mann who voices the mom character in the new zombie kids flick ParaNorman. Just how close is the parenting style of this loveable animation to the real-life mom…? Leslie Mann tells all.

Being a parent isn’t easy, on or off screen. In the new zombie kids flick, ParaNorman, actress Leslie Mann performs the voice of Sandra Babcock, the mom of an 11-year-old boy who can see and hear ghosts. “It’s so hard,” the 40-year-old actress and mother of two says of parenting. She only hopes to be as thoughtful and caring as the character she plays on screen.

Movie review: ParaNorman is zombiebusters in 3D! >>

Does art imitate life in parenting mode?

Leslie Mann

“The real life version of that is you can be a calm, sweet voice, but sometimes life gets hard and it gets stressful and you can’t be that voice and then someone else steps in and it’s kind of like moving pieces all the time,” Mann says.

ParaNorman is the new 3D stop-motion animation film from the makers of Coraline. When the creepy New England town of Blithe Hollow receives a group of visitors in the form of 300-year-old zombies, little Norman is the only one who can help save the day.

Hot tralier: ParaNorman: I see dead cartoons >>

Mann plays Norman's mother and one of the only characters in the film who has any sympathy for his condition. “My character in this movie is really nice, maybe I’m not as nice,” Mann admits, although laughing while she does it.

A mom’s role is to listen

So, how does the star of the upcoming mid-life crisis movie This Is 40 react when her own kids come to her with problems? “With having a 14-year-old and a nine-year-old girl... they really struggle, and especially my 14-year-old who has a lot of hormones and craziness happening right now. I really need to be there for her, and she mainly needs to vent. She needs me to listen,” she says. Mann is married to director Judd Apatow .

“They just want to get it all out, and then they feel better. You can offer them advice, they usually don’t hear it. You can try… I heard somewhere that you have to say things thousands of times before it sinks in to your kids.”

We hope Norman doesn't need that much encouragement before he saves his town from zombies! Actor Kodi Smit-McPhee voices the role of Norman, and Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck and John Goodman co-star in ParaNorman, which creeps into theaters Aug. 17.

Set up a preschool classroom in your home

Whether you’re hoping to get a head start, trying to avoid the fees associated with preschool or looking for ways to keep your preschooler engaged while at home, setting up an educational play space for your child benefits his or her natural development and encourages emotional growth.

Why a preschool classroom in your home?

When you set up a preschool-like classroom or space in your own home, you’re helping your child learn and fine-tune gross motor skills while playing with age-appropriate — and often play-based —  toys. This environment also encourages independence as well as social interactions between parent and child and between child and peers.

The Montessori method is a common and popular preschool curriculum for both Montessori-based preschools and traditional preschools. Montessori learning consists of using all of the human senses to experience and learn from the toy, object, place or experience presented to the child. Because preschool-aged children naturally rely greatly on their senses, Montessori tends to be one of the more natural environments for them.

Homeschooling methods: How to find the right approach for your family >>

How to model the Montessori method in your own home

These tips make creating a Montessori learning environment in your home easy and fun for your preschooler.

  • Tip: If you have a child with Sensory Processing Disorder or special needs, a space filled with sensory materials can help calm and engage your child through transitions and play time.
Read up about the Montessori method and how it’s easy to implement with a preschool-aged child.
  • Set up everything at or below the eye level of the child.
  • Make the space inviting, colorful and engaging.
  • Organize your space to encourage productive play.
  • Once your child has mastered an activity or toy , create an extension. An extension is simply taking the activity to the next level. For example: You can trace or rub crayons over leaves in between two sheets of paper and then take a nature walk in your yard to experience the leaves in the trees and on the ground.
  • Introduce everyday activities and chores into your child’s play time. Pouring a pitcher of water, sweeping the floor or washing the windows are all activities that preschoolers enjoy and they count as productive play time.

How to set up a preschool room or space

You can easily make a room in your house, a playroom or even a section of a bedroom or living room into a preschool area for you child. The main thing to remember is to make everything easily accessible to your child.

By placing toys, games and activities on low shelves, in baskets or displayed on a child-sized table, your child’s natural reaction is to explore and experience those items that are within reach.

Think outside the box to create an educational play space for your child by utilizing your furniture and storage space to its best ability. A bookshelf in a living room can be used to house children’s books, puzzles and baskets full of toys and activities while the bottom shelf on a console table can house manipulation toys like block tracks, push toys and more.

Art can be made anywhere — especially when you incorporate a chalk wall, hanging paper rack or child-sized easel into your home décor.

Incorporate your child’s play furniture into your home décor by using a train table for a coffee table, a child-sized table and chairs in the corner near the toys and floor pillows to encourage a safe and comfortable reading spot.

Label your toy storage bins to teach placement and organization while keeping things in its place. Once you open up your home to being a preschool classroom, you will find that toys and objects that were otherwise contained to a bedroom or playroom will now be in your living space. By modeling and encouraging clean-up time, your child will learn at an early age the skill and importance of chores and organization.

New Breaking Dawn photos show one big happy Cullen family

Well, this is awkward. Summit Entertainment has just released some new photos from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 showing Edward and Bella looking blissful.

The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2

Sadly, the peaceful and pretty photos of Edward and Bella in the last installment of The Twilight Saga are a far cry from real life. Robert Pattinson is definitely getting a lot of sympathy during his Cosmopolis promotional tour this week, but Kristen Stewart is still being shunned.

{pageBreak}

Breaking Dawn Part 2

What's worse? Stewart's affair partner, director Rupert Sanders, will return to direct the Snow White and the Huntsman sequel. And KStew? She won't be in the sequel. The classic sexist double standard in Hollywood and, well, pretty much every industry.

{pageBreak}

Breaking Dawn Part 2

At least Jodie Foster has her back.

"We've all seen the headlines at the check-out counter. 'Kristen Stewart Caught.' We've all thumbed the glossy pages here and there. 'Kris and Rob a couple?'..... But we seldom consider the childhoods we unknowingly destroy in the process," Foster wrote in an essay for The Daily Beast on Wednesday, adding that if she was young today she wouldn't be acting.

{pageBreak}

Breaking Dawn Part 2 photos

"I would quit before I started. If I had to grow up in this media culture, I don't think I could survive it emotionally. I would only hope that someone who loved me, really loved me, would put their arm around me and lead me away to safety," Foster added.

{pageBreak}

Breaking Dawn Part 2 photos

We don't expect the talk about Stewart's affair to end any time soon, especially since she and Pattinson will be on the promotional trail for the film in the coming months. At least we can look at these photos and imagine Pattinson and Stewart during happier times — and man, we're excited for this movie.

Top 5 ways to boost your child's self-esteem

Come back-to-school time, you may find your child getting a bit anxious to return to class. But with these five easy self-esteem boosters, he'll be ready to head back to school with his head held high.

Amp up your child's ego

Come back-to-school time, you may find your child getting a bit anxious to return to class. But with these five easy self-esteem boosters, he'll be ready to head back to school with his head held high.

Teach them to compliment themselves

Stephanie Owens, MA, coach, speaker and author suggests teaching your children to compliment themselves rather than you constantly complimenting them.

She says, "When you want to encourage your child to feel good about him or herself, you tell them what you think about them. Even the most positive, supporting words roll right off like Teflon if he or she sees themself differently."

But wait... don't forget the importance of praising your kids >>

"There’s infinitely more power in the words kids speak aloud."

Instead, she encourages parents to "help [kids] build [confidence and self-esteem] from the inside out. There’s infinitely more power in the words kids speak aloud than any positive strokes that come from outside."

Simply ask your child to tell you what she likes about herself. She admits, "They might be shy or uncomfortable about this at first. To get the wheels turning, smile lovingly and ask questions like, 'Tell me what’s so special about you?,' 'What do you like/love most about yourself?' or 'Do you know what I appreciate about who you are?' (Be ready with a short list of specific traits… not actions. For example, 'You have such a good heart' versus 'You always take care of people.'"

Appreciate their talents and encourage their dreams

Allow your children their own dreams and help foster their natural talents and gifts.

PCI certified parent coach and certified family manager coach Susan Heid suggests, "Whatever way your child is gifted, embrace it. Often as parents, we want things for our children that we didn't have. This can unwittingly crush their tender dreams. Allow for their self-expression and accept them for who they are."

Get more details on helping your child discover her talents >>

She adds, "When your child says they have an aspiration, get
behind it."

Take time for your kids

"When your child says they have an aspiration, get
behind it."

Part of boosting your children's self-esteem involves making time for them and making them feel like an invaluable member of your family, according to Mary Jo Rapini, MEd, LPC, a nationally known psychotherapist, author, public/keynote speaker and television and radio commentator.

Rapini suggests ignoring everything else for a little bit while you spend some quality time with your kids, saying, "When you are with your kids on a play day, walk or activity, shut your phone off. Nothing is as important in your life as this moment."

She also encourages families to start a "family day" once a week in which you all engage in activities/hobbies you share.

Get inspired for family with these 50 family fun night ideas >>

Rapini adds, "Take time and cook with your children. Take time and fix things around the house with your children. Take time and help your kids with their homework. Take time and go to your kids' after-school activities." Notice a pattern here?

Increase your child’s sense of mastery

Dr. John E. Mayer, author and expert of families, encourages parents to help their child gain a sense of mastery, adding that the younger your child is "the more effective it is to do this through a physical task or activity."

He notes, "Let your child choose an activity for the whole family to participate in. Let them set or even make up the rules of the game and then everyone joins in. Let your child plan and choose the foods/dishes for a family meal or better yet, even a family party. Or, if you have several children let each child choose a dish for the party and then label that dish, 'Jessica's Creation' or 'Dwayne's Dessert.' Of course, let them help in the preparation. See their delight when the company loves it!"

Provide the proper environment

Anastasia Gavalas, MS, SDA, family life teacher, author and mother of five says, "Providing a nurturing yet independent environment for children to discover their preferences and strengths helps them develop confidence in themselves and their sense of self."

Perhaps the best tip ever, Gavalas adds, "Love children without conditions and for who they are.

The Avengers 2 is officially on! Sequel date revealed

The Avengers 2 is officially a go! Rejoice and practice your patience, comic book fans, more Marvel/Disney magic is headed to theaters... eventually.

Robert Downey Jr. at The Avengers

The Avengers sequel fans have been hoping for has been given the green light. Walt Disney Studios announced Thursday our favorite crime-fighting team is going to suit up yet again, though we'll have to wait two years to see them in action!

Sending out The Avengers 2 announcement, Disney wrote:

The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios' sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel's The Avengers. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the UNTITLED MARVEL'S AVENGERS SEQUEL set for release May 1, 2015.

The Avengers, which killed it in the opening weeks of this summer's box office competition, is the first-ever distribution by Disney of a Marvel-owned property. To say the partnership was a success is a bit of an understatement, as the film became the fastest flick to ever gross $1 billion worldwide -- not to mention the totals are now said to be up to a staggering $1.46 billion!

One doesn't have to wonder too hard where motivation for a sequel stemmed from, now do they?

As for what fans can expect from The Avengers 2 come May of 2015, Disney chief Bob Iger announced last week Joss Whedon, who both scripted and directed 2012's smash hit, has signed on to work his magic yet again. No newbies will be handling this precious film cargo! Not only that, Whedon has agreed to develop a live-action Marvel-themed TV show for ABC.

No word on if Robert Downey Jr., seen looking sexy in silver at The Avengers premiere at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, will reprise his role as Iron Man alongside the all-star cast, though we can hope! Rumor has it Scarlett Johansson, the bendy Black Widow herself, will bring in a record-breaking paycheck for The Avengers 2. Must be good to be a part of the Marvel gang.

Will you be lining up for opening night of The Avengers 2 in 2015?

Kristi Yamaguchi: Skating her way through life

$

We all remember when Kristi Yamaguchi won Olympic gold for figure skating in 1992. So what is America’s darling-on-ice up to these days? We caught up with Kristi and learned about her clothing line, her children’s book and why you’ll never see her on America’s Got Talent

Kristi YamaguchiKat: Good grief, girl, you are busy! Let’s start with your clothing line, tsu.ya. Whatever inspired you to design clothes?

Kristi: Where I am in my lifestyle right now — being an active, busy woman and a mom and wanting to look for clothes that are functional and comfortable but fashionable too — I wanted something I’d feel comfortable working out in, and yet continue on with my day running the kids or grocery shopping or whatever. I wanted to create an active women’s clothing line with feminine details to it.

Kat: When can we expect to see that?

Kristi: I’m launching it September 6 at select Lord and Taylor stores as well as online and at www.lordandtaylor.com or www.kristiyamaguchi.com.

Kat: And then in your spare time, you went right ahead and cranked out a children’s book, It’s a Big World, Little Pig! Again, what motivated you?

Kristi: My kids motivated me to attempt to write a children’s book. Bedtime reading is a real tradition in our household and it’s fun to see the same books that they read over and over again, so I wanted to add to that collection.

Kat: Was writing a children’s book something you always wanted to do, or just since you’ve had kids?

Kristi: It was something I always had in the back of my mind, and then when they got to an age that they started reading picture books I was like, “Okay, that day is here. Let’s give it a try.”

Kat: Give us some insight into what it’s like when the Olympics are over. For example, some athletes go into the games in relative obscurity, and then go home as household names like Michael Phelps, Gabby Douglas and yourself. So what’s that like? What should someone like Gabby prepare for?

Kristi: It’s quite a whirlwind. Gabby is an amazing girl and it was thrilling to watch her and I think so many were excited to see her win the gold. She’s pretty young, so I think you rely on your family a lot and enjoy the ride, you never know how long it will last. Stay grounded. It’s a little different — you have to get used to the attention. It’s a bit intimidating and daunting at first.

Kat: Having been an Olympic champion, what is your general take-away from the Summer Olympics?

Kristi: I think it was amazingly successful for the U.S. You know they won so many medals, and there’s so many incredible, positive stories that came out of it.

Kat: You have two little girls. Do either of them show any interest in following in Mom’s footsteps?

Kristi: Not the older, but the younger one who is six is enjoying skating, but we’re taking it slow. She’s just a beginner.

Kat: What is your older daughter interested in?

Kristi: She likes softball and dancing and she’s really into art.

Kat: You also, among a zillion other things you’ve won, are a Dancing with the Stars champion. How was the transition from the ice to the dance floor? It has to be easier, right?

Kristi: I wouldn’t say easier — I didn’t have to worry about falling as much and it was nice to have a professional partner. It was fun — it was competitive and stressful.

Kat: You seem to be really good at all the things you do. Can you make the rest of us feel better and share something you’re really terrible at?

Kristi: Oh yeah, lots of things. I can’t sing at all.

Kat: So we won’t see you on America’s Got Talent any time soon?

Kristi: Oh no. But I guess I least know I can’t sing.

Kat: That does separate you from a lot of other people. Anything else?

Kristi: I always tell people that for being an Olympic athlete, I’m not good at any other sport.

Kat: So the kids aren’t wowed by your baseball performance?

Kristi: No, not at all.

Kat: Describe your idea of a lazy day.

Kristi: Sleeping in and being around the house is a dream, do something fun with the kids or just relaxing. I probably wouldn’t answer any e-mails.

Kat: Finish this sentence for me: “In ten years I will be…”

Kristi: Old. .

Kat: You’ll be running a successful clothing line, you’ll probably write a couple more books. How about starring in any blockbuster movies?

Kristi: Yeah, probably not. Unless I can pick my co-star.

Kat: Before we wrap up, tell us a little bit about the Smuckers Uncrustables Unstoppable Family Photo Contest...

Kristi: People can go to www.smuckersuncrustables.com, and enter a family photo of themselves being unstoppable as a family, doing something fun and energetic showing where they like to enjoy their Uncrustables with a short caption and then they have a chance to win $15,000 that would go toward a family adventure or vacation or whatever. People can go online and vote for their favorite photo. Families should definitely check it out.

Gabby Douglas is America's latest sweetheart thanks to her amazing gold-medal performances at the 2012 Summer Games. Douglas took home two gold medals for the Unites States in the women's gymnastics' individual all-around competition and the team all-around competition.

Us Weekly reports celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson gave Gabby Douglas her amazing new locks. And while Gibson was honored to help Gabby out with her hair, he was not happy with the recent criticism she faced. Gibson spoke to The Daily Beast about the disrespectful comments. "I couldn't believe it and still can't" said Ted. "You have this young girl doing amazing things, and the conversation becomes about her hair? It was ridiculous and shameful." We couldn't agree more.

Gibson said Gabby's PR team reached out to him directly, although he doesn't usually work with teenagers or children -- with exceptions for Angelina Jolie's kids -- Gibson said he still wanted to create a look that would make her feel beautiful.

"It's tricky because Gabby is 16 and I don't want to do anything to make her look 25 years old," he said. "Together with her vision, I hope we can create something that's easy and looks great no matter what she's doing or where she is. I hope to create something that makes her feel good about herself as well. That's so important and a big part of what I do for all the women I work with."

Chris Brown wants Rihanna to STFU

Rihanna is still talking about the night Chris Brown beat the stuffing out of her three years ago -- and he wants her to shut it. Is he just trying to sweep his violence under the rug?

Chris Brown

Wouldn't it be nice for Chris Brown if Rihanna would stop talking about the night he punched her in the face and repeatedly slammed her hear against his car window? Then we might all forget it ever happened. She is still talking about that incident three years ago, though -- and Brown is getting ticked.

Rihanna discussed the beating in a sit-down interview airing on Oprah's Next Chapter on Sunday, and Brown -- who she's rumored to still be hooking up with from time to time -- is peeved.

"Chris is just confused about Rihanna's decision to bring up the past again and again — this time in an interview with Oprah," a source told RadarOnline. "Rihanna has previously given wide ranging interviews about the beating to Diane Sawyer and several print magazines. Chris just doesn't think it's productive or relevant to rehash the events since essentially nothing new is being revealed in the interview Rihanna has done with Oprah… he thinks that in order for them to both move forward and not be defined by that one night, it would be better to stop bringing it up."

Rihanna told Oprah that she felt protective of him when the media initially turned against him. Brown's career hasn't suffered, however, and it seems neither has his relationship with Rihanna at the end of the day.

"Rihanna and Chris have spoken since she did her interview with Oprah," the source said. "They have a very complicated and intense relationship even though Chris has a girlfriend. The fact is, Chris and Rihanna just can't stay away from each other. There is a lot of love there -- it's definitely not a healthy situation for either one of them."

Less food waste, more money saved

Nowadays, we do as much as we can to be green and keep as much as possible out of the trash. The kitchen is one place to easily eliminate waste, and these tips will help you use up all your excess food.

Most of us have quite a bit of food waste, but a lot of that can be kept out of the garbage can and even the compost bin. Read on to find out how to use up all those scraps and excess quantities instead of throwing them away. Not only will you save food, but you'll save money, too. Win, win!

Get more bang for your buck: Check out these dinners for less than $10 >>

Stock

One of the easiest and most common ways to use bones, vegetable peels, rinds and other inedible food pieces is to make stock. Let your scraps dictate the kind of stock you'll make and add anything you can't use in your dish — the more you put in, the more flavorful the end result will be. Making homemade stock is as easy as throwing everything into a pot, covering it with water and simmering for four to six hours. Strain and freeze for later use. Although you do throw the scraps away in the end, you've now made something out of nothing. Tip: For extra flavor, add Parmesan cheese rinds to your pot.

Herb pesto

How often do you buy an entire bunch of herbs only to use one tablespoon for a recipe? The next thing you know, they're wilting at the back of the crisper. A great way to use all those herbs is to make herb pesto. Think outside the box and beyond the standard basil pesto by using cilantro, parsley or mint instead. Pestos use a large quantity of herbs and give a huge flavor boost to your meal.

lemon peelCitrus peels

Not only do lemon, lime and orange peels have tons of flavor, they also freshen things up in the kitchen. Stick a few pieces down a stinky garbage disposal for a natural cleansing or even throw a few dried pieces onto a fire for a citrusy essence. Citrus peels can be used in liquids to enhance flavor — try adding some to your glass of water or infusing vodka. If you're roasting or braising meat, throw the peels in and remove before serving.

Overripe fruit

Bananas turn brown fast and peaches seem to go from green to overripe in a matter of hours. Although these fruits might be a little too mushy to eat whole, they're perfect for baking. In fact, banana bread is better when made with overripe bananas since they have a much more concentrated flavor. Likewise, overripe peaches, plums and apricots are perfect for baking or making jam. For cocktail time, make happy hour even sweeter by using strawberries that are slightly past their prime in a daiquiri or margarita.

Take a bath

At the end of your long day in the kitchen, take some of those scraps into the bathroom and draw a relaxing, fragrant bath. This is another great use for citrus peels, which lend a pleasant scent to the water. For dry, itchy skin, drop in soothing cucumber peels. After saving all this money on food, you deserve a little pampering!

Compost

When all else fails and you've made as much stock and pesto as you can handle, compost your scraps and let your garden benefit. You're still keeping it out of the trash and that's something to feel good about.

Jenny McCarthy is single again, boys

Well, it was good while it lasted: Jenny McCarthy and Chicago Bears player Brian Urlacher have ended their relationship.

Jenny McCarthy is single againPlayboy cover girl Jenny McCarthy is back on the market. The Love in the Wild host revealed that she and Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher have opted to end their relationship.

"Brian and I have decided to turn our romance into an amazing friendship," the 39-year-old told People Thursday. "I will continue to be the biggest cheerleader for him. Go, Bears!"

The pair was first spotted out together in April, but McCarthy played coy about the whole thing. He seemed to fit her description of her ideal mate: a man's man who doesn't need all the necessities that the metrosexuals of Los Angeles need to survive.

"Out here, they want to borrow my makeup and concealer," she said in November 2011. "I want to bring a little bit of importing into my life and look for guys outside of L.A. I don't care if they have a big nose. I don't care if they're bald. [I just want someone who's] really sweet and who's a perfect reflection of who I am now."

Jenny McCarthy to bare boobies in Playboy for autism >>

The guy also needed to make his own money, which Urlacher obviously does. "They have to have a job. I'd like them to at least be able to buy dinners and stuff like that. That is important."

It is possible that the NFL player wants to have a family, while McCarthy is done with the whole pregnancy thing. McCarthy's focus is on her son with autism, Evan.

"Evan is doing amazing. He was undiagnosed from having autism, clinically, which is incredible. He's not the only one, there's thousands of kids that get better. It was a long journey. He's the love of my live," she said earlier this year. "I want to give Evan all my attention, because I am a single mom. I think, this uterus is closed."

She might be single now, but we doubt it'll be for long.

Do dogs feel guilty?

Guilty dog

Pet owners always swear they can read their babies' minds. The non-dog-people in the world often scoff, but anyone who owns a dog knows they've seen that familiar reaction: head down, eyes staring remorsefully in your direction. But what do scientists say?

What scientists say about dogs' emotions

Is it really guilt?

In 2009, dog expert Alexandra Horowitz led a study on whether dogs are actually experiencing guilt when they do something wrong. She asked the dog owners participating in the trials to command their pups not to partake of a tasty treat, then leave the room. A scientist would then either give the dog the treat or not and ask the owner to return. The scientist would tell the owner whether or not the dog took the treat .

The dogs who took the treats were scolded by their owners. Each time, the dog exhibited signs of guilt — even if they were, in fact, innocent. None of the dogs who didn't eat the treat exhibited signs of guilt, even if they were. This led Horowitz and her team to the conclusion that dogs don't experience true guilt, but instead, simply react in a way we perceive as guilty because they're being scolded by a superior member of their pack.

Guilty dogSo, it's all in our minds?

Not exactly. Horowitz is quick to point out that there's a difference between feeling guilty and understanding forbidden behavior. Guilt is a highly complex emotion that requires an understanding of a moral code. That doesn't mean a dog can't understand forbidden behavior.

A dog may not understand intrinsically that it's wrong to take a toy from someone else. Pet owners teach this behavior by scolding the dog when she's done something wrong. Human children have to be taught these social skills, as well. But as they grow cognitively, they begin to understand the reasons behind the forbidden behavior and incorporate those into their moral code. Dogs just know what you told them they can and can't do.

What it really means

A new study by scientists at the University of Porto in Portugal may show that dogs do feel empathy. They were able to induce yawning in 12 of 29 dogs by playing them tapes of their owners and complete strangers yawning. They yawned five times more frequently when it was their human's yawn they heard than when it was a stranger's.

No one's saying dogs don't feel, they're simply questioning whether dogs actually feel complex emotions like guilt. Your dog knows right from wrong, though. So be careful when scolding them that you know factually they're the guilty party, or they could misinterpret your anger as being related to something else.

In fact, you only have about 1.3 seconds to praise or scold your dog for its behavior to ensure a proper association. If you fly off the handle when you come home to a mess your dog created, he may learn, not that it's bad to make a mess, but that messes are inherently bad. If that's the case, he may look guilty when you come home to a mess, even if it was your teenager making the mess!

Al Roker is on Team Ann Curry

Think the co-anchors on NBC's Today show don't take sides? Think again: Al Roker made a quip on Thursday's show that makes us think he's in ousted host Ann Curry's corner.

Al Roker is on Team Ann Curry

We've always wondered how Today show co-hosts feel about the whole bruhaha between Matt Lauer and Ann Curry. Now we know: It seems like weatherman Al Roker is definitely on Curry's side, judging from some comments he made during Thursday morning's show.

It all started during an interview of the U.S. Olympic women's rowing team. The ladies were discussing the tradition of throwing one team member in the water after a victory when Lauer made a tongue-in-cheek comparison to New York City.

Reports: NBC to pay Ann Curry $10 million >>

"The tradition here in New York is you throw her in the Hudson River," Lauer joked. Roker then weighed in with a quip of his own.

"Which is different in our tradition, which is to throw one of us under the bus. That's another story," the jolly weatherman replied, referring to a comment that Lauer "threw [Curry] under the bus" in deciding whether or not to fire her from the show.

Ba-dum ching!

Roker's words prompted a few moments of awkwardness, with co-host Savannah Guthrie and Lauer chiding him with "Mr. Roker!"

Could he just be joking about the whole situation, or is he really on Curry's side about the whole thing? It seems like the latter, judging from the tense response of the team.

NBC president: "My heart goes out to Ann Curry" >>

The 50-year-old newswoman has not minced words since being dismissed from the show in July. She might have kept a cushy job with NBC, but she's obviously bitter about the way her firing went down. Basically, she thinks she was set up to fail and could never do anything right when it came to her appearance.

"One day I wore a multicolored dress [on Today] and someone asked if I was trying to be Toucan Sam," she told Ladies Home Journal. "But I chose it because I thought, 'This will perk up America.' I'm encouraged by my bosses to wear these ridiculously high-heel shoes because women say, 'I love your shoes!' So if it makes women happy, I'll wear them. But I'm still going to be me."

Curry again appeared with Lauer during an Olympics segment — and the tension was thick. They were cordial on camera, but "when the cameras stopped rolling, Ann wouldn't even look at Matt," a source told US Weekly.

10 Years: Channing Tatum's awkward past comes to light

Channing Tatum is head of the class. The actor's new film, 10 Years, takes him back to high school, where he mingles with old pals. Rosario Dawson, Chris Pratt, Anthony Mackie and Kate Mara are just some of the stars who pop up at his reunion.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum co-star in

It's hard to believe that hottie Channing Tatum went through an awkward stage. Or at least he did in his latest film, 10 Years.

Yahoo! Movies has released the first trailer for the ensemble dramedy that follows in the footsteps of The Big Chill and Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.

Man Candy Mondays: Channing Tatum >>

In 10 Years, Tatum shares the screen with real-life wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum. And he's gone from Magic Mike to Average Joe. The film features some of Hollywood's hottest stars, as well as a few up-and-comers.

The cast includes Rosario Dawson, Chris Pratt, Ari Graynor, Justin Long, Max Minghella, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Aubrey Plaza, Lynn Collins, Oscar Isaac and Kate Mara.

The movie takes place the night of their high school reunion, where they quickly return to their juvenile ways.

Tatum's character is ready to propose marriage to his girlfriend but gets sidetracked by an old flame . Long and Minghella battle each other for the attention of former "it girl" Collins, while Pratt's character, a reformed bully, reverts to brutish behavior.

Hollywood's a small town, and most of the film's cast has worked together in the past. Both Pratt and Plaza currently star in NBC's Parks and Recreation, and Mackie and Geraghty co-starred in both The Hurt Locker and We Are Marshall. There are more where those came from, but you get the point.

Check out the first trailer for 10 Years below:

10 Years looks like a fun flick to enjoy with friends. The film opens in theaters everywhere Sept. 14.
