High protein and low fat foods make energizing snacks to keep kids going strong!

little girl eating yogurt

It's all about planning! Part of being prepared for school to resume is to stock up on healthy foods for school lunches and after school snacks. Most kids are hungry when they get home from school. Their lunch break was hours ago and children need to eat every few hours for optimum nutrition. Having your refrigerator and pantry stocked with a variety of high protein, low-fat foods means you can offer yummy snacks that will boost energy for after school activities and will help kids concentrate when they hit the books to tackle homework.

Snacks to pack

If your child takes part in athletics after school, there may not be an opportunity to come home for a snack before practice starts. Nutritious snacks that keep without refrigeration are the solution in a time crunch. Peanut butter is a great food for instant snacking. Pair it with vegetable slices, whole-grain crackers or crusty slices of a baguette. Low-sugar cereals in single serving sizes are a portable snack that will deliver a punch of carbohydrate that's perfect for an active athlete. Try a homemade snack mix of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and cereal combined with a few pieces of chocolate -- just to make the gorp more fun! Homemade quick breads made with pureed fruits and vegetables travel well, as do cookie bars. Keep the sugar content low and the fiber high. Dried fruits like apricots and cranberries add sweetness to these recipes. Oatmeal bars are full of fiber and protein and are chewy and satisfying. Fresh fruits like grapes, apples, bananas, pears and oranges are a naturally sweet snack with an extra advantage since the high water content in them helps with hydration. Don't forget to send along small bottles of water or a hydrating sports drink.

Snacks at home

Feed your hungry scholars with delicious after school snacks that are quick and easy. What's quicker than a sandwich? Keep grilled or baked chicken strips on hand to combine with creative toppings. Try a chicken sandwich with apple and cheese slices, or chopped and mixed with wild rice in a creamy ranch dressing on a pita with chunks of veggies, or in a tortilla with salsa and avocado slices. Make up a tuna salad to have on hand, then sprinkle with parmesan cheese for a wonderful kick of flavor and texture. Roasted chickpeas, hummus or yogurt-based dips partnered with veggies and crackers are an easy and fun snack. Stuff some celery with peanut butter or cottage cheese and dot with raisins for an "ants on a log" snack little ones will gobble up. Slices of fresh fruit or berries can be blended into a smoothie -- or creamy yogurt with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar is another option for a sweetly satisfying snack to boost energy and refuel kids for their busy afternoon.

Quick tip

Prep snack items ahead of time: Cook extra chicken to set aside for mini sandwiches and wraps, cut and clean veggies for grab and go convenience and have basics for kids' snack attacks stocked in your pantry and refrigerator.

Say goodbye to the mommy wars and say hello to celebrating individual choice in motherhood. Parenting is personal and we are all doing our best to make parenting decisions that best fit our beliefs, lifestyles and abilities. Instead of allowing our differences to polarize us, let’s discover what we have in common and support each other as we raise the next generation of the world’s children.

Dina Ridenour

Meet attachment parenting mom Dina Ridenour and learn more about how she balances the messy realities of day-to-day motherhood with her unique, natural and gentle parenting style.

Becoming a parent

Dina Ridenour, a certified public school teacher and attachment parenting mom of two beautiful girls, came into her parenting style by natural instinct. "My husband Don and I were married for 10 years, enjoying our time together when I found out I was pregnant with my first child. We did not plan to get pregnant then, but it was the best thing we ever did by accident! We love our role as parents. Our parenting style is kid-centered. They drive most of what goes on around here and we are perfectly fine with that."

Discovering attachment parenting

Becoming a mom by surprise at age 35 was an adjustment for Dina, but she soon realized that this was actually a benefit in disguise. "As I was meeting the many demands of motherhood, I realized at 35 that I was much more ready to do all the sacrificing that I believe good parenting requires. Don and I had our fun and we were both ready to concentrate our energies on being good parents.

I believe in attachment parenting because I believe in giving my children a firm foundation on which to stand so they can spread their wings safely and fly. I feel an accepting environment is created when children have their needs met and feel loved and cared for. I have joked that my children never really cried as babies. I was always there to meet whatever need they had, be it my milk, a hug, food or sleep. They came first. This taught them to trust and helped them become very caring and loving themselves. My proudest moments come when I am told how loving or kind my child has been or that my child sees an injustice and speaks out for the underdog. That's the kind of child we want to send out into the world."

Dina Ridenour collage

The co-sleeping family

Dina and Don did not plan to co-sleep with their kids. In fact, they spent countless hours before their first daughter Chloe was born decorating a nursery, putting up a crib and even painting a beautiful mural on the wall. But after Chloe arrived, co-sleeping just felt natural. Now, nine years later, they're still all sleeping in the same room.

Dina says, "We love co-sleeping. We still co-sleep even now but we have four single beds going across the room. Everyone has their own space, but at the same time we sincerely love the closeness it allows. I love waking up hugging and snuggling with the girls. What better way to start the day? For those who joke and wonder if my kids will be bringing their spouses into the bedroom someday, I just laugh. Everything in its own time. When they are ready, they’ll go. My oldest says she is getting ready to go into her own room soon. She is beginning to want the freedom that being 9 brings. Most people would say she is a loving and confident young lady who has a great sense of herself. I feel the outcome is worth the investment.”

Choosing to homeschool

To those on the outside, it seems curious that a certified public school teacher would choose to homeschool. But for Dina and her family, the decision came naturally. “I believe there is a lot of good going on in public schools. I know because I was part of those good things for many years. But honestly, I homeschool because I am able. I was really dedicated to educating other people's kids for 10 years and now I want to educate my children -- it's as simple as that. I believe what makes the difference in a child’s life, whether going to public school or being homeschooled, is the involvement of the parents. If you are a diligent, loving parent and provide a safe, loving environment for your children, I believe they will thrive no matter where they are educated."

Mom Wisdom

Don't let the mommy wars take you down. There are many different approaches to parenting and many ways to raise happy, healthy children. Discover your own parenting style and be proud of your own parenting choices, whatever they may be.

6 Reasons why after school activities are worth the effort

Don't let kids miss out on the many benefits after school activities provide!

Little girl on soccer team

It takes time and effort to juggle after school activities in a busy schedule. Children have homework and family activities to balance with these extracurricular programs, and parents often have to adjust their own schedules to be available for transportation and to attend events. It may be tough to sandwich in time for after school activities, but the benefits kids gain are more than worth the extra effort!

Physical development

Kids who participate in sports and other athletic recreational programs get the exercise every child needs and are building good habits for a healthy lifestyle. They also learn lessons in teamwork and good sportsmanship. Kids who are involved in sports learn to be humble winners and gracious losers. Often, these sports activities will continue into adulthood and provide lifelong enjoyment.

Teamwork

Sports teams aren't the only avenue for kids to learn about teamwork. Clubs and activities like dance and scouting require children to work together for a common goal. This skill will be helpful to them throughout their lives with family and in a future workplace.

Self esteem

Mastering any new skill builds confidence in kids, and who doesn't want a confident kid? Confidence gained through learning something new in the relaxed atmosphere of an after school activity is a great way to foster self-esteem and encourage self-empowerment.

Time management

Kids have especially busy schedules during the school year and will learn how to manage their time when they participate in after school activities. Don't let them overload their days. Discuss the activities they'd like to be involved with and choose based on their enthusiasm and available time.

Relationships

Kids who participate in after school programs find it easier to build relationships and make friends with other children who have a similar interest. A common interest in a sport, music, an educational club or a community activity is a bond and allows kids to socialize and let relationships evolve in a natural way. Even shy kids overcome social awkwardness while enjoying a favorite activity with a group of peers.

Setting goals

Many after school activities are fun and exciting for kids while also teaching them to set goals. As they learn and achieve, build skills and gain confidence, they are also encouraged to perform at a higher level. Setting goals and working to reach them is an important skill to use throughout their lives.

When you are constantly running and barely have time to think, the thought of finding easy ways to eat waistline-friendly meals on the go may seem like a lofty goal. Here are a few easy ways to eat on the run while keeping it healthy.

eating healthy on the go

When you are constantly running and barely have time to think, the thought of finding easy ways to eat waistline-friendly meals on the go may seem like a lofty goal. Here are a few easy ways to eat on the run while keeping it healthy.

Plan ahead

The absolute best way to keep your hunger at bay during a busy day is to plan for your meals before you leave your house in the morning. Go through your schedule and determine when you'll have time to eat, where you'll eat and then, from there, plan out what you'll eat for the day. Having plenty of water and healthy snacks available makes it easier to avoid making unhealthy meal options, so keep your car stocked. Pack fruits and veggies in a cooler and dry cereal or trail mix in the glove compartment. No matter where you go, you'll know that you are prepared for the day! Plus, when you pack your meals in the morning, your portion sizes are likely to be smaller, which will definitely keep your diet on track.

AppleMake time for breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day -- especially if the day is going to be a busy one. It get's your metabolism moving and provides you with the energy you need to function at full capacity. If you don't have time to sit down and eat, then pick up a non-fat latte for a good calcium boost to go with your caffeine. Skip the muffin or pastry and opt for a piece of fruit and trail mix or half of a bagel.

The lesser of lunchtime evils

The occasional fast food meal is inevitable, so when a quick meal is your only option, opt for lighter choices. Deli-style restaurants often have a variety of healthy options, and you can always pick up a whole grain bagel with non-fat cream cheese from a bakery in a pinch. When you hit the drive-through, grilled chicken entrees are usually a healthier choice. Make sure you ask them to hold the sauce and add extra pickles, tomatoes, onions and lettuce for extra flavor. Not only is this better for you, but it is much less of a mess -- an added bonus for eating on the go!

Try a liquid lunch

Instead of eating on the run, pick up a cool and refreshing smoothie to get you through meal or snack time. Keep it low-cal by opting for smoothies made with low-fat yogurt, fruit and non-fat milk. Avoid sugary syrups and whipped cream and add protein and vitamin boosts when they are available. Smoothies are the perfect pick-me-up on a long day and will give you the energy you need to make it to your next destination.

Celebrity body "flaws"

What is it about celebrities that makes us feel so self-conscious about our looks? Hmm... maybe their amazing bodies, stunning beauty and flawless skin? But doesn't all that perfection get a little boring? The next time you're obsessing over how you look in a bikini or considering a little facial sculpting, think of these celebrities who have embraced their “flaws.”
Anna Paquin
Jessica Pare
Kirsten Dunst

 “Bad” teeth

You'd think bad teeth would be the first thing celebrities would fix. No personal trainers or plastic surgeons required. A simple visit to the dentist, and voila -- perfect pearly whites. These smart ladies know beauty and character go hand in hand, and have no intention of messing with their God-given choppers.

  • Anna Paquin -- Following in the tradition of the great Lauren Bacall, actress Anna Paquin has a rather large gap between her two front teeth and no plans to fix it. In a sea of hot young actresses, she stands out because of her so-called “imperfection.” Photo credit: WENN
  • Jessica Pare -- You know her as Mrs. Megan Draper. And if you're a Mad Men fan, you've probably noticed her somewhat horsey teeth. Pare told New York Magazine, “I’m actually really self-conscious about them. But I never wanted to change my teeth because they’re mine, and I don’t know what I’d look like without them.”
  • Kirsten Dunst -- You'd think that an actress who began her acting career in a vampire movie would be self-conscious about her Dracula-like teeth. Nope. Dunst once told Elle UK “I love my snaggle fangs. They give me character and character is sexy."

Marilyn Monroe

Cindy Crawford

Celebrity moles

Call it a mole, a birthmark or a beauty spot. The fact remains -- it's a dark, raised lump and it's on your face. Sure you could have it removed, but these gorgeous women have done just fine with their bodacious beauty marks.

  • Marilyn Monroe -- Marilyn practically made moles synonymous with glamour. Her platinum curls, pouty red lips and prominent beauty mark were key elements of this icon's signature look.
  • Cindy Crawford -- Sexy supermodel Cindy Crawford is known for her dark mole located just above her lip. She once starred in a chocolate commercial where she licked it off! Photo credit: WENN

Rihanna

Curvy figures

We love these women for dissing Hollywood's obsession with being thin. Here's to the curvy celebrities who celebrate their womanly figures.

  • Kim Kardashian -- Move over, skinny blondes. Buxom, dark-haired bombshell Kim Kardashian has sexy curves galore, and flaunts them with skin-tight clothing. She's even launching a plus-sized denim line at Sears with her sisters. It's called Kardashian Kurves.
  • Jennifer Lopez -- J. Lo is the original booty queen. Some say it's her big sexy butt that helped launch her successful singing, dancing and acting career. Of course talent had a little something to do with it, but she sure knew how to make an “asset” out of something most women might have tried to shrink on the Stairmaster.
  • Rihanna -- Not all celebrities have been celebrated for their curves. Rihanna has received plenty of criticism for her fluctuating weight and generous curves. Her response? "I realized that I actually like my body, even if it's not perfect according to the book. I just feel sexy. For the first time, I don't want to get rid of the curves. I just want to tone it up. My body is comfortable, and it's not unhealthy, so I'm going to rock with it," she said in an interview with Vogue magazine. You go, girl.

Criticism is a part of life. It may come from a colleague in a meeting, a judgmental mom on the playground or a snarky comment on Facebook. Even well-intentioned criticism spikes our heart rate and puts us on the defensive. If we give in to these negative urges, we end up feeling even worse. Learn how to adopt a Zen-like approach to handling criticism. You'll be glad you did.

proud woman

Take a moment

Let's be honest: When a critic gives negative feedback, it feels bad. Those bad feelings quickly morph into anger and if you're not careful, you're probably going to say or write something you'll only regret later. Instead of going with that first reaction, take a deep breath and do not respond. Not giving you that calming effect you were hoping for? Take another deep breath. In fact, take all the time you need until you can find a sense of inner peace. You'll know when you're ready to reply with a calm and kind response.

Acknowledge and thank

Leo Babauta, author of the popular blog Zen Habits, penned two blog posts specifically on how to accept criticism. Babauta says he learned to thank his blog critics for their comments, even if those comments were scathing. “This had a startling effect,” writes Babauta. “The commenter would often respond very positively. Thanking the commenter and acknowledging their point is disarming. People who leave rude comments don’t expect you to listen to them, much less be grateful and empathetic. I had many of my critics become friends after doing that — I’ve never seen a tactic have better results.”

Seek the truth in criticism

As bad as criticism makes us feel, there's often a kernel of truth in what the critic has said. Ignore personal attacks, and examine your critic's comment to see if there is an opportunity for positive change. If so, take the criticism and use it to improve yourself.

Feel good

By rising above insults and attacks, Babauta explains there are two amazing benefits: “Others will admire you and think better of you for rising above the attack. Especially if you remain positive and actually take the criticism well.” Secondly, Babauta writes, “You will feel better about yourself. By participating in personal attacks, we dirty ourselves. But if we can stay above that level, we feel good about who we are.”

Mini sandwiches
kids love

Here are our top six mini sandwich meals that are tested and approved by moms and kids.

Turkey sliders

A wonderful alternative to burgers, our cheddar-stuffed turkey sliders can actually be made with ground turkey or ground chicken. Since they don't require much prep or cook time, this simple dish could easily become a new family favorite in no time.

Tyson Mini chicken sandwiches®

Just heat and eat the new Tyson® Mini Chicken Sandwiches for a quick mini-meal that will keep your kids fueled up through homework and playtime. Chicken patties come fully cooked and stacked between fresh bakery rolls, so they are perfect for busy kids on the go. You can pick them up with or without cheese, too, so you're sure to have a crowd pleaser on your hands when they are stocked in the freezer.

Stuffed mini-pitas

Stuffing mini pitas when making sandwiches for dinner is another great on-the-go option because they travel so well. Stuff with chicken salad or egg salad for a more traditional approach, or make a pita-style not-so-sloppy joe. Stuff with salad and cheese for a fresh, vegetarian option. Any way to slice it, these mini-sandwiches are sure to please!

Baked ham and cheese rolls

Try our four ingredient recipe for these small, baked sandwiches. Simple to make and so delicious, they are an ooey gooey kid-pleaser! These rolls are typically made with pizza dough, but if you don't have any around, crescent roll dough and biscuit dough will also work and taste great! Make them Hawaiian-style by adding a little pineapple. Or substitute turkey for ham, if you prefer it.

Bite-sized peanut butter and jelly

Make a pint-sized version of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for your favorite half-pint. Instead of using sandwich bread, make your PB&J on English muffins. Mix things up with these peanut butter variations:

  • Replace jelly with thinly sliced apples, strawberries or banana with honey.
  • Top peanut butter with marshmallow fluff for a dessert-style sandwich.
  • Or if you're feeling really adventurous, harness your inner-Elvis and try topping your peanut butter and banana sandwich with bacon and cheese.

Mini grilled cheese sandwiches

Mini grilled cheese sandwiches make a great sleepover snack or meal on a rainy evening when paired with a cup of creamy, tomato soup. Create a miniature take on a classic grilled cheese by grilling up whole wheat bread strips with American cheese to make grilled nibblers. It's a great dish to make when you're short on time and ingredients! Get creative with different flavors by changing up your cheese. Try Gouda, brie or Havarti and throw in a few slices of pear or apple. Instead of sandwich bread, pick up mini loaves of French or rye. Make a mini-Italian with mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh basil and use olive oil to toast your bread instead of butter.

Peer pressure and parenting

Under the shadow of the mommy wars and sensationalized media campaigns, it’s easy for moms to fall into the “Are You Mom Enough?” trap. But peer pressure and parenting is no joke. It’s time to cast away the judgment and embrace our differences. You are more than enough. We all are.

mom with baby on floor

Parenting under pressure

From talk shows and parenting magazines, to baby gurus and even the 50-year-old childless guy in front of you in the grocery store, everyone seems to have an opinion about how you should raise your kids. There’s attachment parenting, authoritative parenting, helicopter moms, tiger moms, elephant moms and well... you get the idea. Parenting has been so fractionalized and polarized that even if you do feel strongly about your parenting style, it's hard to know where you stand.

Hot-button parenting

But why is parenting such a hot-button issue? Perhaps it’s because, of all the things we will do in our adult lives, parenting is one of the most consequential. Our parenting decisions don’t just affect us -- they affect the lives of living, breathing little people who depend on us. They affect the future of the next generation. They affect the future of the world in which we live.

But even without the pressure of social responsibility, parenting is hard enough. Children are not born with instruction manuals and even the most concerned, sensitive parent is going to make mistakes along the way.

In the uncharted territory of new motherhood, it can be easy to feel confused and disoriented by all the conflicting advice you will receive. Is breast really best? Will my baby be in danger if I decide to co-sleep? Am I a bad mom if I can’t get my baby to stop crying? It’s not uncommon for new moms to feel overwhelmed when faced with the crushing responsibility of raising another human being.

How to cope with parenting peer pressure

If you are feeling pressured and judged about your parenting, here are some ways to cope:

Educate yourself

While some books and magazines can have a judgmental tone, the abundance of material available on parenting is a bonus to modern parents. Take time to read up on different parenting styles, methods and techniques and discover what appeals to you and your family.

Accept change

Remember that parenting is a work in progress. As you learn and grow, you may discover new methods that work better than what you are currently using. Don’t be afraid to change. The best parent is the one who can accept her mistakes, make changes and move forward with grace and love.

Believe in yourself

Parenting is personal. How you parent is highly influenced by many factors -- including your own upbringing, peer groups, lifestyle, education and popular culture, among other things. Once you’ve found a parenting style that works for you, stand proud. Don’t feel the need to compare yourself to your friends, parents or anyone else. If anyone questions you or criticizes your choices, don’t be afraid to stand up for your beliefs.

Find common ground

The mommy wars have reached their boiling point. It’s time to put an end to pressurized parenting. We are all doing our very best to be good parents. We are all more than enough. Be the parent you want to be and honor the parents around you with tolerance and acceptance. Imagine how much more we could grow as parents and as a society if we take the time to listen and learn from one another before we ask, “Are you mom enough?”

Mom Wisdom

It's okay to bow out of a "momversation" that gets too heated. You can remain quiet or simply say, "I feel like parenting is a personal decision and prefer not to argue about this topic with friends I respect and love."

Every child is special and extraordinary. Discover your child’s interests, gifts, talents and abilities and nurture their unique individuality as they grow and develop.

mom and son coloring together

Discover multiple intelligences

Help your child tap into their strengths through multiple intelligences. This concept was coined by developmental psychologist Howard Gardner in an effort to change how we understand "intelligence." He described eight intelligences that people can possess -- linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalistic. The idea is that everyone possesses all eight multiple intelligences in varying amounts, but that we are naturally inclined towards some more than others. For example, if you learn best while moving around, you are probably strong in bodily-kinesthetic intelligence.

While traditional schools often focus on linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences, Gardner’s approach shows that this is not the only way to measure growth and learning. When you provide opportunities to engage all the intelligences, you can help your children to explore their full potential. Over time, you will discover which intelligences your child is drawn to most and you can tailor her learning to maximize her interests and natural abilities.

Stay engaged

The best way to nurture your child’s unique abilities is to stay engaged with your child. There are many people who will influence your child throughout the years -- including teachers, coaches, mentors and peers -- but no one’s influence will be as significant as your own. Play with your child. Go on adventures together. Watch to see what piques his interest. Be available to talk when your child has questions or just needs an ear to listen. In all these ways, you will be communicating your unconditional love for him as a human being and lighting the spark of self-empowerment and healthy self-worth.

Try new things

Children love to try new things. Use your imagination and take the time to expose your child to lots of new activities. Singing, dancing, cooking, playing an instrument, sports, board games, nature hikes… there are an infinite number of activities you can enjoy together. No one is great at everything, but you’ll never know what you are passionate about unless you explore.

Listen to your children

As a parent, it is sometimes hard to separate your own dreams from those of your children. It might be hard to swallow that your child just doesn’t like football when you live for Sunday nights. Be sensitive and listen to your children. When you believe in your children, it helps them believe in themselves. Follow their lead and you will help your children to blossom into the amazing, unique individuals they are destined to become.

Reasons why protein-packed snacks are good for kids

Snacking smart means offering kids foods that keep them fit and fueled!

Tortilla wrap with avocado

Want to help keep your child fit and healthy? Think protein! Proteins are vital to the body's immune system because they help form antibodies to protect against bacteria and viruses. Proteins also have a significant role in regulation of brain signals and cellular construction, and hemoglobin proteins carry oxygen in the bloodstream. Hair and nails are formed from protein and muscular activities are fueled by proteins known as actin and myosin. Protein snacks can help repair wear and tear on body tissues, keep muscles firm and even help with concentration!

Snacking smart

Another benefit of protein-rich snacks is that they're filling and often low in calories and fat... provided you choose the right ones! Consider these lean and filling options:

  • Grains like oatmeal, popcorn, rice and whole grain cereal all provide protein, but most grains are incomplete protein sources, so be sure to pair them with complimentary proteins or animal proteins to deliver a full dose of the good, cell-building stuff.
  • Add some low-fat dairy to your child's afternoon snack for a satisfying treat that boosts energy. Cheese, yogurt and milk all deliver nutrient-rich protein that fills kids up for an active afternoon.
  • The lean protein in fish, eggs, chicken and turkey is guaranteed to be complete, plus adding these protein sources to meals will keep kids full for hours.
  • Fresh veggies including avocado, broccoli, carrots, celery and tomatoes even deliver protein. Serve them with hummus or black bean dip for a fun afternoon snack.

Deliver energy

With packed schedules filled with classes and after school activities, your child's energy requirements are high. It's important to make snacks nutritious. High protein foods are a building block to proper development. By making tasty snacks that your children are eager to eat, you'll be helping to fuel their minds and their bodies. Here are a few easy, nutritious and energy-boosting options:

  • Mini sandwiches filled with tuna salad, chicken or turkey topped with veggies or a slice of low-fat cheese
  • Tortillas filled with black beans and salsa, topped with grated cheese and melted under the broiler
  • Yogurt topped with chunks of fruit
  • Fruit smoothies made with berries and soymilk
  • Baggies of wheat crackers and colorful vegetable strips served with hummus or Greek yogurt dip

After school snacks your kids can prepare

Getting your kids involved in activities in the kitchen is not only fun, but it's also a great way to introduce them to healthy foods. Children are often more likely to try new foods if they had a hand in preparing them -- and what better time to engage them in an activity than right after school when their tummies are grumbling and you need to start preparing dinner!

Make a parfait

Parfaits hit the trifecta of kid-friendly snacks. They are healthy, super-easy to prepare and totally customizable. The key to making a good parfait is having fresh ingredients available for layering and a whole grain cereal or granola available for a little crunch. Yogurt is an ideal after school snack because it is packed with probiotics and protein -- especially Greek yogurt. This helps to regulate little digestive systems and truly holds kids over until dinner. Get your kids started by setting out all of the parfait ingredients -- plain yogurt, honey, fresh berries, cereal or even peanut butter -- and let them go to town. Since all of the ingredients are healthy, you don't have to worry about controlling the ratios or layering. Just give them small bowls, so it's no big deal if they fill them up.

Roll-ups

Fun and easy to prepare, let your kids make roll-ups the next time they are in the mood for a quick, savory snack. Offer up whole grain tortillas, cream cheese and their favorite lunchmeat for an after school snack that is made to be eaten on the go. Go from savory to sweet by having them spread their favorite nut butter on a tortilla and wrapping up a banana. Or make it a hot, taquito-style snack by adding cheddar and salsa and heating it up for 30 to 40 seconds.

Trail mix

Buying bulk foods that your family loves is a cost-effective way to make sure your kids always have healthy snacks they enjoy available. Fill canisters with healthy, bulk foods like whole grain cereal, dried fruit , sunflower or pumpkin seeds, pretzels and peanuts. Give your kids a cup, a spoon and canister access and they will have all of the tools they need to whip up a batch of their own signature trail mix blend. Now, that's something any mother would be proud of!

Stacked crackers

What kid doesn't like to build stuff? Harness your child's love of blocks and all things stackable in the kitchen for an easy and delicious after school snack. Offer up crackers, cheese and apple or pear slices and let your kids build their very own culinary creation. Sweeten up the deal with peanut butter, cream cheese and slices of peach, melon or berries. You can even mix it up by offering graham crackers or melba toast instead of the standard soda cracker. Your kids are sure to devour their creations in half of the time that it took to build them.

For the evenings where there just isn't enough time to whip up a home-cooked meal, put your microwave to work and make a meal quickly without sacrificing on nutrition or flavor.

5 Fast and easy meals for families on the go

Ready made meals

You'll find plethora of heat-and-eat meals calling out to busy moms from the freezer section at the grocery store. All ready-made meals are not created equal, though, and it's important to take a few moments to read labels to make sure you're not stocking your freezer with food that's full of calories and light on nutrition. The new Tyson® Stuffed Mini Bread Bowls are a great option for busy families because they come packed with protein, vegetables, fresh bread and cheese. Our favorite is their Chicken Broccoli and Cheese Stuffed Mini Bread Bowl. It's a well-rounded option that will get you through dinnertime in a pinch.

Soups and stews

The next time you make your family's favorite soup or stew, double the batch and freeze single serve portions for a perfect microwave-ready meal. Since most soups freeze really well, you can have a home-cooked meal straight out of the microwave. And freezing soup in single portions makes defrosting and heating much faster. On a chilly, fall evening, a microwave baked sweet potato topped with black bean chili is hard to beat. It's perfect fuel to get your family through a busy evening!

Have breakfast for dinner

Make scrambled eggs in less than a minute by microwaving them in a mug. Just mix one egg with a tablespoon of milk or water. Add ham, turkey, cheese, salsa or chopped veggies, cover with plastic wrap and heat on high for around 45 seconds. It will be done before you've had a chance to butter the side of toast that pairs perfectly with this quick and yummy meal.

Quick quesadillas

Quesadillas are super easy to prepare in the microwave! Get your kids involved and let them customize their quesadillas with their favorite ingredients. To make micro-dillas, just place a single tortilla on a piece of wax paper. Top the tortilla with cheese, salsa, beans, chicken or beef, and veggies. Top the filling with another tortilla and cover with one more sheet of wax paper. Cook on high for approximately one minute, allow to cool and enjoy!

Leave a little room for dessert

Even with a hectic schedule, finding a little time to satisfy your sweet tooth can be lots of fun for the family ! One of the easiest ways to make a microwavable dessert is simply by making a quick fondue by melting chocolate in the microwave. Dip banana slices, strawberries, brownies or graham crackers for a special treat. Or you can also try mixing melted chocolate with ricotta cheese to make a cheesecake style dip that is borderline amazing with chocolate wafer cookies. By keeping it simple, you can enjoy many of your favorite foods and flavors -- even when you are on the go!

Mommy guilt: “You” time versus “kid” time

$

If there was one critical lesson that all moms should learn, it wouldn't be how to help your baby fall sleep, sanitize a sippy cup or even how to handle a poopy diaper blowout on an airplane. Nope. It would be how to let go of the mommy guilt, find your life balance and live worry-free.

mom meditating

Motherhood and transformation

Sailing into the uncharted territory of new motherhood presents many new challenges. You have to face the enormous learning curve of figuring out how to care for a tiny, helpless human being, all while revamping your own identity and surviving on practically nonexistent amounts of sleep. It’s clearly a recipe for disaster, but somehow we moms make it through. But not without some stretch marks -- both literally and figuratively.

Balancing self and family

The early years of parenting are intense. Babies require huge amounts of attention and our lives naturally bend to provide what they need. But as the years go on and our babies become toddlers, preschoolers and then elementary school students -- we begin to get glimpses of a life that includes a little more focus on our adult selves again. However, finding the balance between “me” time and “kid” time isn’t easy and it can be one of the most guilt-producing aspects of motherhood. Need a little help finding the right balance between self and family? We’ve got some tips to help you keep all the balls in the air.

Mommies need "me" time

The messy realities of modern motherhood are many, and fitting in “me” time isn’t always easy. But it’s made so much more difficult when you live in a state of guilt every time you go to the gym, get your hair done or spend a night out with the girls. If you accept that time for yourself is essential to your well-being, you can relax and let go of the guilt. Instead of waiting to sneak in a little “me” time once you’ve reached the end of your rope, get out your day-planner and put it on the calendar. Think about what helps you recharge your batteries. Zumba class? A weekly massage? A monthly trip to the spa? Do the things that make you happy and you will have more to give to your family in the long run.

Take care of yourself

It’s natural for moms to put their children’s needs before their own, but over time, you can find yourself running thin. Don’t wait until you are catching every virus that passes by. Be proactive and take care of yourself. This might include things like:

  1. Checking with your insurance provider to see what kind of wellness programs are available.
  2. Joining a gym with childcare so you can work out regularly. 24 Hour Fitness and Lifetime Fitness are national clubs that offer terrific childcare that kids enjoy.
  3. Hiring help for childcare or household chores. It’s okay to admit that you can’t do it all. Need a good reference for a babysitter, nanny or day care? Care.com is an excellent resource you can depend on.

Working moms share: How I plan school week menus

When it comes to planning school lunches, it's easy to fall into a rut. Here's how a couple of working moms made lunchtime fun and took their weekly menus beyond the turkey sandwich.

Keeping lunches fun five days a week

When it comes to planning school lunches, it's easy to fall into a rut. Here's how a couple of working moms made lunchtime fun and took their weekly menus beyond the turkey sandwich.

I've gone totally bento

Blogger Wendy Copley shares lots of helpful lunchtime tips and inspiration for packing bento boxes at her site wendolonia.com. Bento boxes are compartmentalized containers that originated in Japan. These boxes have been used for takeout and for taking home-cooked meals on the go. Wendy shares a list of kid-friendly foods that her kids like and will eat cold or at room temperature. She uses those lists to plan the weekly lunches for her children, ensuring that she provides them with an interesting variety of foods that will keep them eating and well-nourished.

Pre-pack bento compartments for the week to make assembly each morning something that you can actually do with at least one eye closed. Match different colored containers with types of food -- blue with proteins, green with vegetables, etc. -- to make sure you're covering all of the food groups each day.

There's an app for that

For more proof that there's really nothing that your smart phone can't do, check out the LaLa Lunchbox app developed by working mom Gillian Fein. She created a system to deal with the what's for lunch question in her home.

According to her blog, Fein originally developed the system for her daughter and asked her to pick out what she wants packed in her lunch for the week. Of course, there had to be a few ground rules. Each lunch had to contain a fruit, a vegetable, a protein and a snack. After her daughter made her selections, Fein wrote up a grocery list, bought the weekly supplies and called it a day. Her app brings the system into your home. Just give your kids your phone and let them make their choices. The app will then give you a grocery list and schedule to work from.

Quick and healthy sandwich ideas

Nutritionist Tina Ruggiero shares ten quick, healthy and yummy sandwich ideas at modernmom.com. Her ideas include offering up an omelet sandwich made with mozzarella and served on whole grain bread and using leftovers to stuff pita pockets and build hearty sandwiches that your kids will love. Work hummus and veggies, almond butter and other less conventional, but completely healthy, ingredients into your kid's lunch to continue to foster variety and avoid a lunch rut.

Real women share: My favorite flaw

Accept your flaws and love yourself for who you are. Easier said than done, right? Here are the inspiring stories of two women who have come to terms with their so-called flaws.

woman with big smile

From big thighs to legs of steel: Getting comfortable in her own skin

Before sharing her favorite flaw, Debra L. took a moment to appreciate how much her self-acceptance has evolved over the past decade. "Combining the words 'favorite' and 'flaw' in one sentence would have seemed impossible in my 20s," she said. “After all, aren't we always trying to fix these aspects of ourselves that make us cringe?"

"As I near my 40s, I've come to accept that there are certain flaws I must live with — maybe even grow to accept," said Debra. "I would have to say of all my flaws, my favorite would be my big, athletic thighs."

When asked how she felt about her legs at a younger age, Debra answered "My short, stocky, athletic legs have bothered me for years. I can remember during my high school years, trying to find jeans that fit both my thighs and my waist, which were not quite in proportion. It was an annoying challenge. I always had an abundance of cute tops in my wardrobe, but few bottoms that I actually felt comfortable or confident in."

"They got me up hills and allowed me to sprint. The fact that each run depended upon my two legs, and that my thighs were the power source behind these legs, allowed me to embrace them. "

So what changed her perspective? This past year Debra trained for her second half-marathon. "I'd say this was the turning point in how I felt about my thighs. Instead of feeling like they stuck out and were always in the way, like two thick trunks, I started to look at them as my two powerhouses. They got me up hills and allowed me to sprint. The fact that each run depended upon my two legs, and that my thighs were the power source behind these legs, allowed me to embrace them. 'Love' may be too strong a word, but I have definitely come to a happy place where my thighs are concerned."

From floater to fearless: Coming to terms with individualism

Kimmie S. says it's her individualism that she's learned to embrace as a flaw that's uniquely hers. At the age of 40, Kimmie says she appreciates her individualism because it has allowed her to be true to her own spirit and follow her life's calling.

When asked if this characteristic ever bothered her, she emphatically replied, "Oh, it's bothered me alright! Growing up in high school I never felt like I fit into any one single group of friends. I envied people like my sister who had one solid group of friends that they could always count on to hang out with, eat lunch with, and just generally be there." Kimmie says she was more of a "floater," which often left her feeling lonely.

While Kimmie says she gradually learned to accept her individualism, it still makes things difficult at times. "I have a tendency to raise my voice regarding issues that concern me in a way that sometimes seems to alienate people as being overly pushy, aggressive or condescending."

"...I feel that my independent spirit has opened many doors for me, such as friendships with exchange students from all around the world -- one of which led me to living overseas, where I have an extremely rich and full life."

Despite the challenges, however, she says, "I really don't think that I would have things any other way. I think that being isolated within one single group would have been extremely hard for me, and I feel that my independent spirit has opened many doors for me, such as friendships with exchange students from all around the world — one of which led me to living overseas, where I have an extremely rich and full life."

Even though her strong views sometimes get her into trouble, Kimmie says it's those views that have helped her work for social change to make our world a better place.

Hollywood tells Kim Kardashian she is not eligible for star

Kim Kardashian said many might disagree with her dream of getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But it turns out the star isn't a matter of taste — just a hard-and-fast rule laid down by Hollywood.

Kim KardashianKim Kardashian has been in our lives for at least a few years now, and the reality TV star feels comfortable enough to talk about how big a star she has become. However, no matter what she accomplishes on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, there is one goal she has that cannot be accomplished, at least not until she ventures out of that show.

Talking with V Magazine about how she would love to be given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she said she knows many would disagree, but that she would "love to break that mold," said the Hollywood Reporter.

But Kardashian's trek to gain that star is not about anyone disagreeing but is not going to happen because of the actual rule set forth by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

"Part of criteria in being honored is receiving awards such as Emmy's, SAG Awards, Oscars etc. in the category of Television, Live Stage Performance or Motion Pictures," the rep said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "They have to have a career in the business of acting for five years or more."

While Kardashian's first role was in Disaster Movie four years ago, she is far from having had an acting career. Besides her family's show, she has done a few guest roles in shows like CSI: NY and Drop Dead Diva, as well as a part in a Tyler Perry film. But for Kardashian to be given a star, she would have to really put herself into securing more spots.

Kim Kardashian is a Drop-Dead Diva!

But weirder things have happened. The Emmy Awards have a category for Best Outstanding Reality Program, an award that is barely over a decade old. Hollywood has been known to adjust to changing times, and the city of Hollywood might change before Kim Kardashian decides on a full-time acting career.

However, the rep for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce told the Hollywood Reporter this probably won't happen anytime soon.

"Can't really say if reality stars will ever be eligible. Not on our radar right now."

Kristen Stewart's mom files for divorce

Just a month after her daughter's relationship ended, Jules Stewart files for divorce from Kristen's dad after 27 years of marriage.

Kristen Stewart

Like daughter, like mother. At least in the case of Kristen Stewart and her mom. Just a month after Kristen Stewart and longtime boyfriend Robert Pattinson split, it looks like Stewart's mom, Jules Stewart, is doing the same.

"Writer and script supervisor Jules Stewart is representing herself in the action to end her 27-year marriage with TV producer John Stewart, court records show," said the New York Daily News. "The mom cited 'irreconcilable differences' and said the couple broke up in June 2010, TMZ.com first reported."

The elder Stewart has been in Hollywood longer than her daughter has been alive. The script supervisor worked on her first project, TV movie Shootdown, in 1988 . She has worked on dozens of projects since then, mostly TV movies, although she did have jobs with shows like Picket Fences, The Practice and The Sarah Silverman Program. Jules Stewart had a work hiatus from 2010 until this year's Noah's Ark: The New Beginning.

While Jules Stewart's split from Kristen's father may have come as no surprise to her or her daughter, Kristen's breakup was a shock to everyone. Kristen was photographed by Us Weekly kissing her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. She later issued a statement, directed at beau Robert Pattinson.

"This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob," she said at the time. "I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry."

Pattinson since broke up with Stewart and has put the home that they shared up for sale. The last of the Twilight films is set to come out in November, which means that the two will be doing promotion for the film starting very soon. You can bet all eyes will be on how they act toward each other when they have to be together.

Third Hobbit film gets a release date

When The Hobbit movies were split into three films instead of the original two, we knew the release dates would be close. But now we know that all three films will be released within two years of each other.

Peter Jackson directs <em>The Hobbit</em>

If any film project could say it has been one of the most anticipated events since it was first talked about, it would be The Hobbit. When Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, took over the project, many knew it would be handled the right way. But things are changing, and while Jackson will still be the creative genius behind the project, it will look different than originally thought.

"Back when Peter Jackson assumed the directorial role on Warner Bros.' adaptation of Tolkien's The Hobbit, it was envisioned as two films, one titled An Unexpected Journey and the other titled There and Back Again," said ScreenRant.com. "The first film's title was a creation of the writing team while There and Back Again was a reference to the book Bilbo writes to sum up his adventures."

Jackson announced earlier this summer that the project would turn into three films, instead of the originally announced two films.

"The second film has been retitled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The third film will take the title that was previously assigned to the second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again," said the Hollywood Reporter.

It's official! Hobbit fans in for a third film >>

All three films have release dates. The first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will open on Dec. 14, 2012, and the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, will open Dec. 13, 2013. But now we know that the third film will open less than a year after the second film: The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be released July 18, 2014, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films," Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman told the Hollywood Reporter. "Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure."

Seal says Heidi Klum was cheating with her bodyguard

When Klum and Seal announced their divorce, it seemed like it would happen civilly. But both sides are showing they are ready to fight.

Heidi Klum and SealSeal and Heidi Klum seemed like the perfect couple for a long time, but we are now seeing that it's hard to know what happens within a marriage. Their divorce has turned dirty, and Seal is throwing out the next attack.

Klum was spotted recently on a vacation with her arms around her bodyguard, Martin Kristen. TMZ asked Seal about the relationship on Aug. 31.

"Look boys, that's what happens when two people separate. They move on and that generally means [they have] other people in their lives," Seal said, according to Us Weekly. "I necessarily don't expect to Heidi to all of a sudden become a nun, but as always, my main priority is the emotional well-being of our children."

In that comment, he seems like such an understanding ex-husband. But then he continues and slips something into the conversation that hints at infidelity on Klum's part.

"To be quite honest, if there is going to be somebody else in their lives, I'd much rather it was a familiar face," he told TMZ. "I guess the only thing I would have preferred is that... I guess I didn't expect any better from him, I would have preferred Heidi show a little bit more class and at least wait until we separated first before deciding to fornicate with the help, as it were. But I guess you now all have the answer that you've been looking for for the past seven months."

Seal explains divorce to kids >>

Wait, what? He sounded like he is being supportive until he snuck in that little nugget of information. It looks like Seal is saying they broke up because of Klum and Kristen's relationship. You can be sure Klum is probably not going to comment on Seal's suggestion of infidelity, but it will leave everyone wondering. In April, however, she did speak with Elle magazine. And without giving anything away, she said she didn't want to talk about the reasons behind the split.

"To the outside world, you don't really share all the things that happen. You kind of share just the most amazing sides," she said, according to Us Weekly. "But I don't really want to get into any of that stuff. With my life, my family, my business — I want to go forward."

Klum is currently hosting the 10th season of Project Runway on Lifetime.
