The Big Benefit Breast Milk May Have for Premies

They say, "Breast is best," and in most cases, it is. In fact, the benefits of breast milk are well-documented. However, a recent study — conducted by researchers at the University of Edinburgh and published in the journal NeuroImage — found that breast milk may be particularly beneficial to premature babies.

More: The Benefits of Breastfeeding — for You, Not Just the Baby

In fact, breast milk may have a substantial impact on their brain development.

The study analyzed the brain scans of 47 babies who were born before 33 weeks. And while breast milk consumption varied, researchers found the babies who had the most breast milk — i.e., who consumed breast milk exclusively for three-quarters of their hospital stay or more — showed improved brain connectivity and function.

Professor James Boardman, director of the Jennifer Brown Research Laboratory at the University of Edinburgh and one of the lead researchers on the study, said in a statement that these "findings suggest that brain development in the weeks after preterm birth is improved in babies who receive greater amounts of breast milk." As such, "mothers of pre-term babies should be supported to provide breast milk while their baby is in neonatal care — if they are able to and if their baby is well enough to receive milk — because this may give their children the best chance of healthy brain development."

Of course, not every person who has given birth can breastfeed. Some mothers cannot produce enough milk to adequately care for their child and others simply shouldn't due to drugs, medications or other medical conditions. However, the study found that donor breast milk worked just as well, and there are donor programs like the Human Milk Banking Association of North America specifically designed to help premature babies.

That said, Boardman noted that while breast milk is hugely beneficial to premies, additional research is necessary: "This study highlights the need for more research to understand the role of early life nutrition for improving long-term outcomes for pre-term babies."

The Big Bang Theory's Final Season May Include Big Changes for Penny & Leonard

When The Big Bang Theory returns for season 12 on Monday, it will be the sitcom's last-ever season premiere. CBS announced earlier this year that the show will end after this season, so obviously, fans have burning questions about how showrunner Steve Holland and his team plan to wrap things up.

More: Kaley Cuoco Talks About the Emotional Moment She Learned TBBT Was Ending

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Holland answered some of those questions, though he was careful not to give too much away. In particular, he talked about Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki), who got married in the season nine premiere after years of will-they-won't-they tension.

Fans have often wondered if the couple will ever have children, something Cuoco has told ET she doesn't want because she doesn't like babies on set. But now that The Big Bang Theory is in its final season, if Penny does get pregnant, it seems like there's a slim chance she'll actually give birth before the series finale. At least, that's what Holland seems to hint during his chat with ET.

"We are certainly going to talk about it," Holland tells the outlet. "Leonard and Penny are going to have that discussion. They’re at that point in their marriage where they’re like, 'Are we going to do this or not?'"

Everyone on TBBT has come a long way since the show first premiered, especially Penny and Leonard. Cuoco even recently shared a side-by-side comparison photo of herself on Instagram from the pilot episode and herself in the season 12 premiere to illustrate how her character has changed. Despite the changes this show and its actors have made over the years, one thing has remained the same — we still don't know Penny's last name. Holland admitted to ET that it's likely we never will.

"It was never an intentional thing, honestly," he said. "At first, it was that we just hadn’t mentioned it and then we realized that we hadn’t mentioned it and then it became just a sort of superstition." He added, "I think it just won’t sound right. The trickiest one to write was when Penny’s dad came because we couldn’t write him as 'Mr. Whatever-His-Last-Name-Is,' so I think he has to cut him off and say 'Call me Wyatt' right off the bat."

Whether or not we learn Penny's last name in the final season, it sounds like potentially big changes are coming for her and Leonard. Fans shouldn't stress too much, because regardless of how things pan out, Holland told ET that a "happy ending" for the series seems likely.

More: Big Bang Fans Will Love Johnny Galecki's Sweet Post for Kaley Cuoco

"This isn’t spoiling anything — because we haven’t written the episode and there’s nothing to give away yet — but one of the things I love about this show is that it’s a happy and positive show about people who love each other," he said. "I don’t think it would feel right to have a bummer ending to the show, it just wouldn’t feel in tone."

The Big Bang Theory season 12 premieres Monday, Sept. 24 at 8/7c on CBS.

Ellen Pompeo Says Her Grey's Salary Negotiation Moved Other Women to Tears

Grey's Anatomy hasn't officially been renewed beyond the upcoming season 15, but star Ellen Pompeo, who plays title character Meredith Grey, signed a contract in late 2017 that attaches her to the project through at least season 16. The contract also made her the highest-paid female actor on television today, and while that is a huge accomplishment, some critics believe her pay increase is what pushed Grey's to write two other women out of the show after season 14.

More: Grey's Anatomy Could Be Done After Season 16 — Here's Why

Entertainment Weekly asked Pompeo about her contract renegotiation — and the feedback on it — when she did a recent photo shoot for a special collector's cover of the magazine. She acknowledged her particular privilege in being able to ask for what she deserved for her work on Grey's and said that oftentimes, when women succeed, it's harder for other women to feel a responsibility to hold them up.

“Women approached me on the street in tears — crying — and it is really interesting how as women we are really not used to, or accustomed to being forceful and asking for what we want, or asking for what we deserve, or speaking up, or speaking our mind," Pompeo told EW.

She added, "It’s been a very interesting ride, the whole topic of standing up for yourself and what it takes to get yourself emotionally to the place where you’re comfortable doing that. Of course, it was a challenging thing to do right, because I’m in a very specific situation. Like I had said in the past, I had very quantifiable numbers that I could derive my number from. Not everybody has the blessing to be able to do that. You don’t know how your work impacts your workplace."

Pompeo did not speak directly to the accusations that her raise forced out Grey's Anatomy cast members Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw after the season 14 finale. However, when Deadline reported on their departures in March and mentioned Pompeo's new contract in the article, seemingly tying the situations to each other, Pompeo did speak out on Twitter.

On March 8, Pompeo tweeted, "Its [sic] unfortunate that @DEADLINE chooses to try to pit women against each other on #InternationalWomensDay #shameonyounotme." She added, "I'm a big girl @DEADLINE can take shots at me if they want but to the fans please don't fall into that trap. This is above my pay grade."

In speaking to EW, Pompeo said her contract renegotiation and the ensuing debacle after the Deadline article paints a specific picture of how women are pitted against each other: "I’m glad I [renegotiated] and I’m really glad that it was received in the way that it was received, but we still have a really long way to go with respect to women supporting women," she said.

She added, “When there’s a victim situation and other women can come in like, ‘Let me help you,’ they can be empowered because they’re helping someone who’s down. It’s still more challenging to get women to support you when you’re actually on top and doing fantastic.”

Women discussing equal pay are bound to face backlash, but Pompeo's honesty on this topic is absolutely necessary. It reminds us that women not only need to be fighting for equal pay and discussing it with each other, but supporting one another in a fight that affects us all.

Serena Williams Credits Daughter for Calming Her After US Open Loss

Serena Williams has had a difficult month. On Saturday, the tennis star received three code violations in her final U.S. Open match against Naomi Osaka, which cost her $17,000 in fines, a point and, ultimately, the title and game. (Osaka beat Williams in two straight sets to win her first Grand Slam.) And while Williams has spoken out about the incident, one thing she has been rather mum about is how she handled the loss emotionally.

More: Serena Williams Had an Embarrassing In-Flight Moment With Baby Olympia

In fact, Williams has not talked about that evening at all, at least until now.

But in a recent interview on the podcast No Filter with Mia FreedmanWilliams opened up about the minutes and hours that followed, and she revealed it was her daughter who helped her most after the now-infamous match.

"I got in the car, and Olympia was in the car... and she started giving me kisses," Williams explained to Freedman. "She never gives me kisses. She doesn’t even know to give kisses, and she just grabbed me, and I was like this little baby is so smart."

Williams also told Freedman that, while the loss was undoubtedly hard, Olympia definitely helped make it better, as she does with every day of Williams' life: "It’s just hard to be too down when you have a little one... like, I have to take care of this person, and I have to do this type of stuff. It puts everything in perspective."

That said, Williams admits she is still shaken, telling Freedman she is doing “OK, [but] not great... I’m doing the best that I can to try and move forward."

The good news is that Williams told Freedman she has a solid plan. "Spending time with Olympia... you realize [you want to focus on] the most important things that really matter.”

2 Female Bachelor Vietnam Contestants Went Home Together, & the Internet Loved It

Fans of The Bachelor Vietnam got a huge shock during last week's rose ceremony. After Bachelor Quoc Trung eliminated contestant Minh Thu by not giving her the requisite rose, she opted against fighting for her chance to stay and instead confessed her love for another contestant, Truc Nhu. The two women left the rose ceremony together after Trung and the show host unsuccessfully tried to get Nhu to stay, and the internet has been — rightfully — freaking out over the now-viral clip.

More: 11 Reality Dating Shows to Stream During the Bachelor Hiatus

According to BuzzFeed, people are reacting so intensely to this Bachelor Vietnam clip, not just because two women have never left a rose ceremony together during any Bachelor Nation franchise, but because of what this means for Vietnam viewers in particular.

Although Vietnam has made huge strides toward implementing better LGBTQ rights, including repealing the same-sex marriage ban in 2014 (but not recognizing same-sex marriages as "legal families"), the country still has a long way to go when it comes to widely accepting these identities. Per a 2015 article on HuffPost, LGBT rights program manager at Vietnam's Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment said that family attitudes are a major obstacle for Vietnam's LGBTQ community.

“Because of traditional norms — such as keeping the family line intact, saving face, etc. — there is a lot of stigma and misunderstanding,” he said. “Many people also think that LGBT people are ‘social evils,’ or that it is ‘fashion’ or ‘social trend.’ [As a result,] most LGBT people still hide their sexuality from their parents.”

Thus, this kind of declaration on Vietnamese television is huge. Viewer reactions have been appropriately intense.

One fan shared the clip and tweeted, "I CANT BREATHE. ON THE BACHELOR VIETNAM ONE WOMAN PROFESSED HER LOVE FOR ANOTHER FEMALE CONTESTANT AND ASKED HER TO COME HOME WITH HER THE GAYS NEVER LOSE!"

Another wrote, "two contestants falling in love is what i hope for when i watch the bachelor lmao i love it and it’s in vietnam of all places i love being gay and vietnamese."

After people started accusing the show of staging the moment, one person said, "Doesn’t matter to me if that clip from Vietnam’s 'The Bachelor' is staged or not. Would 100% watch an entire show where beautiful women turn down a rose from a beautiful tuxedoed man & leave together."

But it wasn't all rainbows. A self-identified bisexual viewer called out the treatment of this moment as a "salacious plot point in someone else's story."

According to BuzzFeed, senior story producer on The Bachelor Vietnam Anh-Thu said, "In the cynical age that we live in, it’s very easy to believe these things are staged, but if you look at every contestant’s face as well as the host’s, you can tell this is 100% real. There aren't any fast cuts nor do we overplay the scene. This scene breathes on its own."

However, the viral clip leaves out one important moment. As originally reported by NextShark, despite the fact that Nhu and Thu left the rose ceremony together, Nhu decided to keep her rose and continue on the show after a "heart-to-heart" with Trung.

Bachelor Nation contestants go on to date each other with some frequency — in fact, in 2016, two former female contestants from The Bachelor Australia dated and garnered a ton of attention for it. It would have been amazing if Thu and Nhu really did leave The Bachelor Vietnam together, but you never know. Maybe when the finale airs, we'll learn that they took another chance after filming ended.

Signs Your Thyroid Might Be Out of Whack

If you've never had any problems with your thyroid, you probably haven't spent much time thinking about this important gland situated in the front of your neck. Truth be told, there can be all sorts of symptoms if it starts to go wonky, and some of these can be mild and some can be simply odd. But as annoying (or weird) as they are, these symptoms can clue you in that you might need to head to a doc. Let's take a look at your thyroid gland and how it can affect your body in all sorts of different ways.

Meet your thyroid

Your thyroid is an endocrine gland, situated in your neck. An article published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine explains that it releases a flow of thyroid hormones into your bloodstream that helps regulate certain bodily functions, such as your heartbeat, your body temperature and your metabolism. It's shaped like a butterfly or bowtie (you pick!) and you might not be able to feel it if you poke around your neck — and really, if your thyroid is functioning properly, you probably never think about it either.

However, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a healthy thyroid is always working in the background to control how your body uses the energy it has available and has an impact on almost every organ in your body.

Your thyroid is stimulated by yet another endocrine gland — the pituitary, which is found in your brain. Your pituitary gland releases something called the thyroid-stimulating hormone, which in turn causes your thyroid to release thyroid hormones according to the USNLM. Your pituitary gland can also tell if you don't have enough thyroid hormones in your bloodstream and will react accordingly — it will send out more thyroid-stimulating hormone if your thyroid levels are low and will send out less TSH if they're on the high side.

More: Here's Why Some People Never Seem to Catch a Cold

So, what happens when your thyroid isn't functioning normally? Let's take a look.

Thyroid problems: Signs & symptoms

As with many maladies, some thyroid problems don't cause anything other than mild symptoms as well as symptoms that can be mistaken for something else. Also, there is not just one thyroid disease to discuss here — there are a few things that can go wrong in Thyroidland.

"The signs and symptoms of thyroid issues can be very different depending upon exactly which thyroid problem an individual is experiencing," Dr. Samuel Malloy, medical director at Dr. Felix (a U.K.-based online doctor and pharmacy), tells SheKnows. "There's a huge range of thyroid conditions including goiter, thyroiditis, cancer, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism."

Let's break them down to see what symptoms might clue you in that you need to get your thyroid checked out.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism means that your thyroid gland is underactive and not producing enough thyroid hormones. "Not everyone experiences every symptom, and the symptoms are easily confused with other conditions," Malloy notes. That being said, here are some symptoms hypothyroidism can cause, according to the USNLM:

  • Fatigue
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Shortness of breath upon exertion
  • Weight gain
  • Memory problems
  • Constipation
  • Hair loss
  • Dry skin
  • Low or hoarse voice
  • Menstrual problems, such as heavy periods or fertility problems
  • Muscle pain
  • Brittle hair and nails

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, means your thyroid is overactive and producing too much hormone. As you might expect, the symptoms are often opposite those of hypothyroidism, Malloy says. Here are signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Weight loss
  • Increased appetite
  • Trembling
  • Irritability
  • Sleep problems
  • Restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness

Goiters

The term goiter describes an enlarged thyroid gland. This can be caused by the conditions outlined above, but in any case, an enlarged thyroid gland should be investigated even if you don't have any other symptoms. According to Malloy, here are some of the more common symptoms of a goiter:

  • Lump or swelling in the thyroid area of the neck
  • Coughing
  • Tightness of the throat
  • Voice changes
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Stridor (a high-pitched whistling noise when you breathe)

More: Are Your Cold Symptoms Actually Just Allergies?

Thyroid cancer

Also, your thyroid gland can develop cancer. Here are some of the signs and symptoms of thyroid cancer:

  • Lump in the neck
  • Trouble breathing
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Pain upon swallowing
  • Hoarseness

As you can see, those symptoms are similar to those of a goiter, so Malloy says that it's important to have these types of symptoms checked out if you experience them.

What causes thyroid disease?

Many thyroid conditions are a result of the thyroid malfunctioning because of nutritional deficiencies, genetics or infection, Malloy explains. "In these cases, the thyroid is unable to function correctly, as it does not have what it needs to do so," he adds.

However, there is also autoimmune thyroid disease, which is another ball game. "Thyroid disease from an autoimmune cause occurs because one's own immune system — the body system that protects our body from infections — is treating the thyroid gland like a foreign invader and attacking it," Dr. Chirag Shah, an emergency medicine physician and cofounder of Accesa Labs, tells SheKnows. "Over time, this leads to thyroid tissue destruction and impaired thyroid health."

Additionally, there may be a genetic component to thyroid disease, but generally, genetics tend to come into play more with autoimmune diseases. "There are clusters of families that have higher rates of autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's and Graves' disease, suggesting a genetic relationship," Shah notes.

The tendency for autoimmune diseases (as a whole) is more likely to be passed down through families and not necessarily specific diseases according to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Autoimmune Disease Research Center.

When to seek a doctor's help

If you have any of these symptoms, even if they seem mild, it wouldn't hurt to check in with a doctor. Hypo- and hyperthyroidism can be detected with a blood test, and a physical exam can help your doctor know if more tests are needed for an enlarged thyroid. Your thyroid takes care of you, so make sure you take care of it.

North West Makes Fierce Modeling Debut, Kim Kardashian West Is Super-Proud

It was just a matter of time. North West — North West — the fashion-forward daughter of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West — made her runway debut on Saturday. North, 5, strutted her stuff for brand L.O.L. Surprise in Pacific Palisades, California, looking plenty fierce. Dressed as an L.O.L. doll character, North rocked the runway in a magenta vinyl jacket, sassy miniskirt and black crop top. Oh, and don't forget the oversize shades and bag.

Seriously? Watch out, Kendall Jenner. Your niece may be your newest competition.

Proud mama Kim Kardashian West was on hand (obvi) and pretty much losing her mind during the show. “Kim was cheering North’s name as she walked,” a source told Us Weekly. “[Kim] even hopped out of her seat and ran over to North before she walked to give her some last minute modeling tips!”

Kardashian posted a video of North strutting the catwalk on her Instagram Stories, captioning it "North as THRILLA @lolsurprise" and "Northie came through!"

As if Northie wouldn't rock her first modeling gig. Please. Kardashian West added a second Instagram Story featuring North beaming while holding the hands of the other child models at the end of the show (including actor Busy Philipps' daughter Birdie).

“North is completely obsessed with L.O.L. Surprise already, so when we found out there was going to be an L.O.L. Surprise BIGGER Surprise Fashion show, she absolutely had to be involved,” Kardashian West said. “She loves to dress up like her favorite characters, so it was so exciting for her to actually become a real-life L.O.L. doll.”

Hmmm. Wonder where she gets it from...

We're kind of expecting a mother-daughter modeling event at some point in the future. I mean, just look at these two twinning away.

Will we see North West's siblings — little brother Saint and new sis Chicago — on the runway someday? We're guessing yes.

Princess Charlotte & Prince George Stole a Wedding Spotlight, Because Obviously

How many weddings can one (royal) family go to in a year? We've lost count of the nuptials attended by Kate Middleton and Prince William in 2018 — now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — and their elder children, Prince George, 5, and Princess Charlotte, 3. The latest: the wedding of Sophie Carter, one of Kate's besties, in which Prince George served as page boy and Princess Charlotte as bridesmaid. (They start 'em young over there.)

More: Princess Charlotte Is a Boss — and a Perfect Host Too

People snagged exclusive photos of George and Charlotte having a blast at Carter's wedding to Robert Snuggs in Norfolk, England, on Saturday morning. Carter is one of Princess Charlotte's godmothers. The Royal Fashion channel also compiled wedding shots in a YouTube video. Prepare to ooh and ah.

By all accounts, it was a very happy affair — even for the littles at the adult event. “George is a real star, quite the little chap. He was having a great time, running around like the leader of the pack," one source reported to the magazine. And mama Kate seemed to be delighted, beaming as she watched her son and daughter playing with the other children present.

MoreHeath Ledger's Parents to Meet Michelle Williams' New Husband

George and Charlotte wore traditional wedding attendant ensembles in blue and white (Kate reportedly loves children’s wear designer Amaia, which they wore). The two were picture-perfect when it was time for photo call with the bride and groom.

Of course, it's not all royal shindigs and fancy high teas for the royal family. Kate and William try as much as possible (not easy when William is second in line for the throne of England) to raise their kids in a down-to-earth way.

Harper's Bazaar reported that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge even take their kids to school themselves — how perfectly low-key is that?

In the new teaser shared by E! News on Monday, Beth's exact reaction to Zoe and Kevin is put on full display. While talking with Randall in their kitchen, Beth says to her husband, "Now I'm sure of it. Your brother and my cousin are knocking boots." Randall asks, "Whatchu talking about, Beth?"

Beth hilariously replies, "It's an expression from the '90s. It means that they are having sex." Randall answers, "I'm familiar with the expression, woman, I'm just asking why you're so positive."

Beth's reply? "Because I know." Randall stops her right there and says, "But you don't."

Then, Beth delivers such a Beth line that will make fans literally laugh out loud. She asks Randall to please talk to his brother and, "Tell him to get the hell off of Beth's cousin before I kill you in the face!"

Oh, Beth. She really is the best, isn't she?

Their conversation gets even better when Randall tells Beth he will not do that, especially when they don't have "evidence to prove it." He pleads with Beth to please not say anything, because it's his birthday and they are all celebrating later that same night. Randall even goes as far to say to Beth, "It is my birthday and I need you to swear to it on Oprah."

Initially, Beth tells him no, but eventually she gives in and swears on Oprah. However, as soon as Randall leaves the kitchen, she says to herself, "Even Gayle lets Oprah down sometimes."

This just might be Beth's greatest season yet.

Based on a first look from the season three premiere shared on Sept. 9, Beth definitely didn't keep her promise to Randall. She's seen walking up to Zoe and Kevin at what appears to be Randall's birthday party (based on the balloons in the background) and says heatedly, "You two are knocking boots." In the same sneak peek, Beth tries to talk to Kevin and Zoe separately and to say she's mad is an understatement.

It's no secret that Beth wouldn't be happy about her cousin and brother-in-law as a couple. Everyone knows how Beth feels about Kevin. At the end of August, Susan Kelechi Watson also admitted Beth wasn't going to take too kindly to Zoe and Kevin. "She probably thinks it's not a good idea," the star said in a clip shared on the This Is Us YouTube page. "To Beth, worst case scenario is they get together."

Fans can see how the Beth-Zoe-Kevin situation plays out in its entirety soon enough. This Is Us season three premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c on NBC.

Why I Decided to Be Completely Open With My Young Child About Having Cancer

$

When I got cancer, I made one fateful decision that forever changed my relationship with my son: I promised him full transparency.

If I didn’t tell my 8-year-old child the truth, his mind would fill in the blanks. I made the choice to fill in the blanks in the best kid-appropriate way I could. My goal was to answer all his questions, prevent him from worrying and provide him with as much information as possible so he didn't make things up in his head.

I was diagnosed with recurrent cervical cancer in February 2016. My first cancer was stage 1B cervical cancer in 2012. This was an easily treated cancer. We called it a “baby” cancer because there was one quick surgery — a radical hysterectomy — and I was back to normal in a few months. In hindsight, it was no worse than if I’d had to have my gallbladder removed.

More: After Infertility, I Was Scared of a Breast Cancer Diagnosis — Here's Why

But the second time around, I was deemed incurable and was told that I would die in as few as 15 months. The doctor spelled out my treatment plan, telling me, "You will have chemo until you can't and then you will die."

The fight for my life had already started. There was no hiding this or pretending it was OK. My husband and I agreed on full transparency for my son’s sake.

We sat our son down and told him the truth. "Mommy has cancer again. We know it sounds scary, but we don't want you to be scared. We promise to tell you anything you want to know."

After a moment of silence, he asked: "Anything?"

"Anything," we said, holding our breath.

"Santa?" asked my innocent one. "Is Santa real?"

Shocked, amazed and amused, my husband and I looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders and realized in an instant “full transparency” means never lying.

My son was crestfallen to learn that Santa wasn't real. An 8-year-old couldn't comprehend that the cancer he thought had gone away had instead grown up and was threatening to take his mommy away. He only saw a loophole to learn the question that was burning his mind.

More: Signs of Cervical Cancer You Might Miss

My son did come to understand what was happening as he watched his mother melt away under chemotherapy. I was bald; 30 pounds lighter; sensitive to touch, smells and sounds; and always exhausted. Watching the reality and fear grow in the eyes of my precious son was devastating.

"Mommy?" he asked as I turned out the light after prayers and a bedtime story, "Are you going to die?"

My heart froze. Time stopped. In the dark room, I braced myself with the doorframe so I wouldn't collapse. Transparency. I had promised full transparency.

After a deep breath, I gently said, "Honey, I don't know if Mommy is going to die, but I promise you I'm going to do everything in my power to live."

And I did. I changed every part of my life, read every book and studied every method that felt right. My son was a part of every decision and discussion. From then on, we talked openly about the medical treatments I was doing and why: drugs I was taking, opioid withdrawal, neuropathy and whether I should do an immunotherapy trial.

We talked about all the crazy woo-woo stuff I was trying: acupuncture, psychotherapy, crystals, energy healing, essential oils, astrology and meditation. He begrudgingly went along with all the radical diet changes I was making to heal my body, like eliminating gluten, sugar, alcohol, soy and dairy.

Tracy White with her son

Our relationship grew and evolved. He had to grow up sooner than I liked. I had to find ways to let him still be a child. There were aspects of cancer he didn't need to see. Like how hard the first three days after chemotherapy were.

On those days, my “boys” – that is, my husband and son – went on all-day ski trips or on other adventures. Our son knew I needed rest and never questioned or pushed. He got a fun dad-son day. I got solitude and sleep.

Other times, we made sure he had a schedule packed with playdates. Sometimes, I had to drop my son off at various classmates’ homes at 6 a.m. on school days so I could get to chemotherapy. When that happened, every mom made sure that my son was treated like part of their family and made his time with them feel like an adventure.

One day, our relationship took a very unexpected turn when I found myself crying on my son’s shoulder. I’d been working from home; it was late in the day, and my son was home from school. I was emotionally, spiritually and physically exhausted. I couldn't hold back the tears anymore. I had tried so hard to always be strong around him, to be strong for him, but I hit a breaking point.

Intuitively, he understood. He hugged me the hardest he ever has and told me it was going to be OK. I was embarrassed for myself, but I also knew he needed to see the truth. He needed to know it was OK to have emotions, to be vulnerable, to be scared. I've never hidden my emotions from him since.

Over the next two years, we were each other’s biggest cheerleaders. I began to heal and defy medical expectations, and he started fourth, then fifth grade.

Now that I'm in remission, our transparency with each other is still intact. He's now 11 and headed to middle school this year. Who knows where our relationship will go as we enter teenage years, but the base of trust we built through my illness is a stronger foundation than I could have imagined when I got sick, and I’m still grateful for that every day I continue to wake up.

Here's What's New in the Murphy Brown Reboot

Twenty years after the original series ended, Murphy Brown will make its TV comeback this fall. We can’t tell what we’re more excited about — the return of the tough-as-nails title character, or to see how a show that has always been ahead of its time will change to suit the time we now inhabit.

We already know that the series will be the same in some ways, starting with bringing back star Candice Bergen. We suspect Bergen’s Murphy Brown will still be as sharp as ever, perhaps with even less patience with society’s shortcomings. But CBS has made it clear that the reboot isn’t a carbon copy of the original, which aired from 1988 to 1998 and received a whopping 62 Emmy nominations

To get to the bottom of what the new Murphy Brown will be bringing to our screens, we did our own bit of investigative journalism. Here are a few key differences we found.

1. Murphy's got a new gig

In the OG series, Murphy acted as a news anchor for FYI, a fictional CBS television newsmagazine show. This go-round, Murphy will host a show called Murphy in the Morning.

2. Her show will square off against a familiar rival

OK, so the rival isn't familiar to us, the viewers. However, it's someone who isn't just familiar to Murphy — he's downright familial. Figured it out yet? If you guessed Murphy's now-grown son, Avery, you're right.

According to the Daily Beast, Avery hosts an ultra-conservative talk show. The competition between his show and his mother's show is meant to mirror the rivalry between MSNBC's Morning Joe and Fox News' Fox & Friends

3. There will be new faces alongside the vets

Naturally, you're probably wondering who'll play Murphy's son Avery. Spoiler alert: It's not Haley Joel Osment. Rather, Jake McDorman (Limitless) got the part. According to the network's official character description, Avery is a "millennial journalist who is following in his mother's footsteps, perhaps too closely, and has his mother's competitive spirit and quick wit."

There will be other newcomers as well. Emmy Award-winning Tyne Daly (Judging Amy) is set to play Phyllis, a new friend of Murphy's. Nik Dodani (Atypical) will play Pat, a social media director.

4. A few old favorites couldn't return

The sad reality is that two decades have gone by, during which a few of Murphy Brown's original stars passed away. In 2004, Robert Pastorelli — who fans knew as Murphy's beloved painter/nanny Eldin — died from an accidental heroin overdose. In 2006, Pat Corley, who played barkeep Phil, died of congestive heart failure. And Brittany Murphy, who guest starred on the series, died unexpectedly in 2009 at the age of 32.

5. The new age of political sparring is upon us

There should be no doubt in fans' minds that the new Murphy Brown will be just as politically charged as its predecessor. According to a press release for the show, the reboot will focus on "a world of cable news, social media, fake news and a very different political and cultural climate."

In fact, the current political climate is part of the reason the reboot is happening. Bergen said that she and creator Diane English "thought it might be nice to have a counterweight to this administration." As for whether the cast thinks the reboot will draw the ire of the current administration, well, Bergen had something to say about that, too. "We're hoping so much for a comment, but I think they'll be as restrained as they can be," she told a TV Guide reporter

6. The #MeToo movement will have its moment

Given the sexual misconduct allegations that have toppled the careers of so many men in Hollywood over the last year, it's not surprising that a cultural touchstone like Murphy Brown would address the #MeToo movement. In the show's fourth week, a special episode titled "#MurphyToo" will air.

"I can tell you that in the writers' room we have a great collection of people — men and women, gay and straight — who developed this episode," English said at the Television Critics Association's press tour. "I don't think there is a woman out here who hasn't had some experience with misogyny or misconduct. It's a powerful moment and we wanted to do it justice."

Murphy Brown premieres Thursday at 9:30/8:30c on CBS.

7 Halloween Playlists for Every Type of Party

A Halloween party without a killer (pun intended) soundtrack simply lacks panache. You want to give guests a playlist they can really sink their teeth into, whether you're queuing up the music at your annual office shindig or trying to creep out your closest friends at your costume party.

But knowing where to begin can be just as terrifying as the tracks you're trying to find. There's certainly no shortage of fun and fear-inspiring music floating around, and the internet has many dark corners. Don't worry, though — we did the digging for you.

More: The 10 Best Haunted Destinations to Visit This Fall

Check out these seven spooky playlists you'll actually want to play, sorted by the style of party you plan to host. Trick or treat? You be the judge. [Cue maniacal laughter.]

1. The office party

The last thing you want to happen at your annual office Halloween party is for it to get any more awkward. Keep things light and fun with a playlist full of nostalgic favorites.

2. The creepy dinner party

You don't want your guests screaming across the dinner table — unless of course they're screaming in terror. We kid, we kid... kinda. Cue up these haunting ambient songs to leave your guest feeling delightfully unsettled throughout dinner.

3. The kids party

While it's perfectly appropriate to scare the living daylights out of your closest friends, you don't exactly want to scar your children for life with a poor choice of Halloween tracks. Give them this upbeat mix of silly and only slightly spooky songs instead.

4. The costume party

It's OK to be a little cheesy when choosing a soundtrack for your costume party. In fact, it's part of the fun. This playlist doesn't take itself too seriously, which will help you forget about the fact you're a grown-ass person dressed like a pirate.

More: What's the Deal With Ouija Boards? We Asked 3 Experts to Find Out

For this party, you want people on their feet, but not running toward the nearest exit. An eclectic mashup of hot contemporary songs with decidedly dark undertones will ensure your gala isn't totally lifeless.

6. The scary party

Whether you have your living room set up like a haunted house or simply plan to jump out and delight in guests' blood-curdling screams as they enter, you're going to want a suitably intense soundtrack to help you set the horrific mood. These songs should do the trick.

7. The vibey party

You know what we're talking about, right? It's somewhere between the plucky adult dance party and the one where you want to send everyone away with night terrors. You don't necessarily want to overtly frighten anyone, but you want the eerie vibe of the evening to linger long after the party ends.

Kelly Ripa Fires Back at Critics Who Say She's Too Old For Mark Consuelos

Kelly Ripa routinely defends herself against social media trolls, and their latest attack on her might be the most ridiculous yet.

Over the weekend, an Instagram hater made the unsolicited observation that the Live With Kelly and Ryan host looked too old for her husband, Mark Consuelos. Granted, they are both 47 years old — and Ripa looks stunning, per the norm. Is this really where we are as a society, people?

More: Kelly Ripa Is Still Battling Rude, Body-Shaming Trolls on Instagram

While Ripa doesn’t feel compelled to respond to every rude remark or wild accusation lobbed at her on the internet, she does take specific care to address the ones she finds especially problematic.

And her clapback to this ageist troll is classic Ripa perfection.

But first, a bit of exposition. On Friday, Consuelos posted a photo on Instagram in which he is holding up a #HeForShe sign. “Now more than ever,” the Riverdale star captioned the photo, “We should want to live in a world where we’re all equal. That’s why I’m partnering with @HeForShe — to champion real change in gender equality.”

Among the thousands of fans who showed up to comment on Consuelos’ photo was Ripa, who wrote to her husband, “You make me proud @instasuelos.”

While this entire moment — a male in Hollywood openly advocating for the #HeForShe movement, Ripa supporting her husband — could have simply lived on as a shiny, happy minute in time, a troll couldn’t help but interject. “@KellyRipa yes he is so handsome but you need to go Kelly you look to old for him,” they wrote, adding, “sorry but you do.”

But Ripa didn’t feel like taking the high road on this occasion and, hey, we don’t blame her. “You need to learn how to spell the word too sweetie,” Ripa clapped back. “As in you’re too stupid to be with my young, handsome husband. Ps, he likes proper grammar as well you dope.”

Fans were living for Ripa’s comeback, cheering on the television host for standing up for herself. Sadly, she's gotten adept at doing so in recent years due to the fact that trolls come at Ripa for all manner of absurd reasons.

Earlier this year, another hater suggested she was too old to wear a bikini (strange, is there an expiration date on the tag or something?). And tragically, just as is the case with this current troll, the person doing the insulting appeared to be a fellow female.

More: Kelly Ripa Was Shamed for Wearing a Bikini Because She's Too Old, & We Can't

As a fan who came to Ripa's defense pointed out, women should "lift each other up, not tear each other down." But, until we're all on the same page, perhaps this particular hater will serve as a cautionary tale — don't send for Ripa, because she will come for you.

7 Ways to Set Boundaries With Your Work Friends

$

Having friends at work can improve your overall office experience. Just having someone to eat lunch with or talk to before a big meeting can make your days seem shorter and more meaningful.

But regardless of how well you get along with someone at work or how close you think you are, you have to remember that they are your coworker. Creating boundaries for workplace friendships can be difficult, but they are necessary. Think about it: Keeping a little distance can prevent you from sneaky unwanted repercussions on your professional life, like an embarrassing secret getting out or a bad reputation forming around your blurred lines.

We’ve outlined a few easy steps for preventing your workplace friendship from crossing dangerous boundaries you definitely want to avoid. You know, without it being super-awkward. You don't need to wear a keep-away sign. Just do these things.

1. Don't gossip

While gossiping about other colleagues can be tempting, avoid doing so with your workplace friend. They could have a relationship with the other coworker you are mentioning, which could cause friction between you, your friend and said coworker. But even worse, you could get the reputation as an untrustworthy employee or, worse, the office gossip.

More: 12 Habits You Don't Realize Are Losing You Respect at Work

2. Don't bad-mouth your boss

Or any superiors for that matter. Frankly, you shouldn’t be bad-mouthing anyone at work, but you should especially avoid saying negative things about those who could, um, fire you. While we all feel the need to vent about work every once in a while, do so on your own time. Talk about your frustrations with your friends, family or spouse — essentially anyone who isn’t employed by your company.

3. Be cautious about divulging personal information

As cool as your work friend may seem, they may not take kindly to the fact that you were out at a concert until 2 a.m. the night before work, regardless of how well you’re functioning that day. Every person has different hobbies, interests and lifestyles — and they may not understand those of others. Try to maintain a divide between your work life and your personal life. Talk about light things, like your cute cat or their obsession with chocolate.

4. Be cautious about posting on social media

If your work friend follows you on social media, beware of what you post and how it could reflect on you as an employee. While screenshots and screen-recordings are amazing technological developments, they can also be used against you.

More:  10 Things Smart People Do When They Don’t Like Their Coworkers

5. Be clear about remaining unbiased

Your work friend should never assume you will take their side in meetings or support a professional venture of theirs simply because you're friends. And you shouldn’t assume they'll behave this way either. Make sure you treat them the same way you treat your other colleagues.

6. Be realistic about your relationship

Consider the most negative outcome possible: a falling-out. Never reveal information you wouldn’t want to be used against you if your friendship ended on bad terms. Don't forget to put your career first and protect your position at the company along with your professional relationship with your boss and other colleagues. Use caution in your interactions and realize it might not work out.

More: 23 Offensive Things You're Accidentally Saying at Work

7. Be professional

The most important rule is to always maintain your professionalism. If you’re questioning whether or not to act a certain way with your work friend, the answer is probably no. And on that note, don't drink too much alcohol around them. Come on, everyone.

Kate Hudson Wants ‘a Little Shot of Whiskey’ to Kick-Start Labor

It sounds like Kate Hudson is over pregnancy. So over it. And who can blame her? She seems to have been pregnant for centuries. But while some women go on walks to induce labor or eat pineapple — like, an entire pineapple — Hudson has had another idea: whiskey.

More: Goldie Hawn Swam & Ate Doritos During Kate Hudson's Labor

In fact, the star joked on her Instagram Story that a nip of the good stuff would do the trick: "I figure a little shot of whiskey can put me into labor... I mean, how do Southern girls get labor going?”

Hudson thought of the idea while reading friend Reese Witherspoon's new cookbook, Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits. But that wasn't all; she also asked Witherspoon to hook her up.

"I can’t walk, I can’t speak," Hudson joked on Instagram. "Listen. Reese is my neighbor. Just bring the whiskey. I don’t need the teacup,” referencing the cookbook's cover image.

And whiskey — specifically bourbon — seems to be on Hudson's mind in more ways than one. As she made her way through Witherspoon's book, she said in an Insta Stories video, “I’m looking through it, and what I really want to try is this,” pointing to a delicious-looking cocktail. “See? That guy. The mint julep... but I can’t.”

The good news is whiskey and juleps are surely in Hudson's future. I mean, her baby has to come out... eventually. And when it does, Hudson can indulge in all those drinks and more. And sushi. Because doesn't every pregnant person crave sushi?

This Is When Making a Murderer Season 2 Returns to Netflix

Good news, Making a Murderer fans: Netflix has announced the premiere date for season two, and the best part is that you won't have to wait long. In fact, according to Variety, the second installment of the documentary series will debut on October 19 — mere weeks from when we're telling you this. For true crime fans, the excitement is real.

More: There Might Be a New Suspect in the Making a Murderer Case

On Tuesday, the Making a Murderer team posted a teaser announcement to their Twitter, confirming the premiere date of season two with a short video hinting that the coming episodes will focus on the seemingly unwinnable fight central figures, Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, face as they attempt to overturn their sentences.

As for season two, the show is slated to pick up right where the captivating season one left off. As series creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos tell Variety, in this new season they will be following Avery, Dassey, their families and their legal teams once more.

“Steven and Brendan, their families and their legal and investigative teams have once again graciously granted us access, giving us a window into the complex web of American criminal justice,” Ricciardi and Demos said. “Building on Part 1, which documented the experience of the accused, in Part 2, we have chronicled the experience of the convicted and imprisoned, two men each serving life sentences for crimes they maintain they did not commit. We are thrilled to be able to share this new phase of the journey with viewers.”

Since Avery and Dassey's 2007 conviction in the Teresa Halbach murder trial, there have been some notable turns in the case. In 2016, Judge William Duffin ruled that Dassey's confession to police concerning the 2005 rape and murder of Halbach was coerced. As such, Dassey's legal team tried to appeal his conviction. However, in December 2017, the full 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that Dassey's confession was voluntary — and his sentencing stood. Dassey's lawyers attempted to take the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, but in June the court declined to hear it.

There's also been a lot of talk about suppressed evidence that could not only prove Avery and Dassey's innocence but may point to another suspect. In July, Rolling Stone reported that Avery's lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, submitted a 599-page filing that "asks that the Wisconsin Circuit Court in Manitowoc County allow her to supplement Avery’s current appeal with previously suppressed evidence," namely a "CD-ROM containing 2,449 pages of data downloaded from the Dassey family’s laptop computer." However, on September 7, the Sheboygan County Circuit Court judge overseeing Steven Avery's case denied the motion, according to the Post Crescent.

Whatever is next for Avery and Dassey — and season two of Making a Murderer — remains to be seen and we're already very curious to see it.

Apparently, Channing Tatum & Daughter Everly Have a Dance-Off Every Day

Apparently, Channing Tatum and his daughter — Everly, 5 — have daily dance-offs. Suddenly, the apocalypse doesn't seem so near.

"We have dance-offs almost every day at some point," Tatum told E! News at the premiere for his new animated movie, Smallfoot. He also told the interviewer that Everly's absolute fave time for these contests is during the opening songs of the TV shows she likes. "It's dance party time... We get down," he said.

MoreWe Made Channing Tatum a Tinder Profile Because He'll Need It Soon

Tatum — who shares daughter Everly with ex-wife Jenna Dewan — is known for his sweet moves (uh, what do you mean you haven't seen Magic Mike?). And Dewan is an accomplished dancer as well, having appeared in sets with Pink, Janet Jackson and Christina Aguilera. Of course Everly has the dance gene.

"She's always had dance moves," Tatum continued. "She does her own dance moves. I don't know where she gets them, but she's been doing them since the day she came out."

Did Everly like her dad's new movie, Smallfoot? Well...not exactly. "She gets it by about 70 percent. She knows it's not me, but [my character gets] tranquilizer darted, and she did not like that," he told E! News at the premiere.

Tatum and ex-wife Dewan met on the set of dance flick Step Up. After eight years together, the couple announced on Instagram in April that they had "lovingly chosen to separate." In the post about their split, they described themselves as "still a family" and "loving dedicated parents to Everly." Yes, that is the sound of our muffled weeping. The co-parenting dance duo was spotted together at Everly's school year graduation in June.

"There is a lot of love between them and they want to do things peacefully," a source told E! News. "They are focused on Everly and being great parents to her."

Dewan, the host of World of Dance, spoke to Women's Health in July about life apart from Tatum. "It's been a journey, and it's been a transformation of myself — my needs and wants as a woman. I think everyone wants to hold on to what's in front of them, but when you open your mind saying, 'I want what's best for myself and my daughter,' you have to be OK with however that looks. I feel like I've been on a wave of growth," she mused.

"It does look different; it's a new normal, and I really think we'll get used to that," she added.

MoreThe Only Reason Jenna Dewan & Channing Tatum Split

Both Dewan and Tatum have described Everly as a "little mirror" for themselves — and clearly, the daily dance-offs are a big part of that. Still, we mourn the days of Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan lap dances on Lip Sync Battle. (Rated R. Sorry, Everly.)

Ashley Iaconetti & Jared Haibon Are Inviting 2 A-Listers to Their Wedding

The wedding plans of Bachelor in Paradise alums Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon continue to progress, with the reality TV couple even starting to nail down their guest list. And although they aren’t giving too much away, the happy couple did just reveal that, according to Us Weekly, they’ve invited a major Hollywood husband-and-wife duo Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher to attend!

More: Ashley Iaconetti & Jared Haibon Reveal Their Wedding Planning Headaches

You may be thinking, “Hmm, how do Iaconetti and Haibon even know Kunis and Kutcher?” Well, in short, they don’t — technically. But as any loyal Bachelor Nation viewer knows, the A-listers are big fans of the franchise. In 2017, they even appeared on Rachel Lindsay’s season to help the then-Bachelorette host the ultimate challenge in “husbandry.”

At the time, Kunis and Kutcher revealed to People magazine that, “Monday nights for us are white wine, vodka tonic, Bachelor or Bachelorette.”

Considering both couples love participating in charitable events and all four are celebs, it’s not altogether surprising that they would bump into one another at an event, and, considering all this Bachelor Nation love, that a connection might be felt from a least one person in the group. During that fateful run-in, Haibon recalls that he and Iaconetti capitalized on Kutcher and Kunis’ love for the franchise while striking up a conversation with them.

“They’re Bachelor fans. They’ve talked about us publicly, personally multiple times,” Iaconetti added. “So we know all we had to do was make eye contact with them. When we did, it was like all our dreams came true. Ashton was like, ‘No way!’ He got so stoked.”

More: Ashley Iaconetti Sets the Record Straight on Those Cheating Rumors

The Ranch star’s wife proved to be pretty “stoked,” too. “Mila was like, ‘Don’t even tempt us with inviting us to the wedding because we’ll actually take you up on the offer,” Iaconetti said, with Haibon revealing, “We’re like, ‘Don’t you worry, we’re inviting you.’”

Wait, could this really happen? It would obviously be a reality TV dream come true if it did — and it’s not entirely outside of the realm of possibility. According to Iaconetti, they’ve already tasked their wedding planner with adding Kunis and Kutcher to the guest list. “We’re like, ‘OK… you’ve got to find their address,’” she joked.

If nothing else, though, at least Iaconetti and Haibon got a fun story and a killer selfie with the famous couple out of the unexpected meeting.

We're not sure if Kutcher and Kunis will accept, but this much is certain: if they do RSVP to attending Iaconetti and Haibon’s wedding ceremony, we’re definitely going to need a televised special officiated by Chris Harrison. Unless, of course, either Kunis or Kutcher are ordained, in which case they should absolutely do the honors.

Jason Sudeikis & Olivia Wilde's Son Thinks Dad Has a Lego Stuck in His Nose

Actor Olivia Wilde confirmed to Jimmy Kimmel on Monday night that the rumors are true: Her fiancé, Jason Sudeikis, was born without a sense of smell — or taste.

“Apparently, it took quite a while for him to realize it,” Wilde said to Kimmel. “I had weirdly heard it from our mutual friends, and it was an awkward thing I brought up on our first date. I was like, ‘I heard you don’t smell so great.’" Oopsie.

MoreOlivia Wilde's Tattoo — & the Meaning Behind It

Sudeikis, an SNL alum, never really had a problem with his smell or taste deficit — that is, until the couple's kids, Otis, 4, and Daisy, 2, arrived on the scene. “When our kids were born, he had a real Forrest Gump moment where he was like, ‘Is he normal? Can he smell?’” Wilde said.

Son Otis is very worried about his dad's condition and is pretty sure he can fix it himself. "Otis can smell, which is lucky for him," Wilde continued. “He’s like, ‘Dad, there is a Lego up your nose. You just have to breathe out really hard.’ He tries to coach him. He holds his face. He’s like, ‘I’m gonna get it. Don’t worry.’“

Like Otis, Wilde also wishes Sudeikis could smell the good things in life. "Sautéing onions. Garlic and onions. The beginning of a pasta," she said. Mmmm. Poor guy.

But Wilde said there are benefits that come along with Sudeikis not being able to smell. "...I guess if you’re gonna lose a sense… New York in the summertime, you don’t want your sense of smell.”

True story. Wilde occasionally posts personal pics on Instagram, like this super-sweet birthday post. No sense of smell needed to appreciate all the family love here.

Wilde captioned the adorable shot, "What could I possibly ask for on this 34th birthday? Just endless health and happiness for these magical maniacs. Thank you thank you thank you, a million times, thank you."
