How Accusing Someone of Sexual Assault Affects Your Mental Health

A few days ago, most of us didn't know the name Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Sure, if you have a career in academic psychology or are one of her colleagues at Palo Alto University, you may be familiar with her work, but she was hardly a public figure like she is now, after accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault. And to be clear: Fame was never her goal in doing so, nor is it for the countless other people who have done the same thing only to see their own careers harmed.

In fact, when she went on the record for The Washington Post to discuss an incident — which happened in the early 1980s when Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were both in high school — she could not have been clearer about her reservations in coming forward. “Why suffer through the annihilation if it’s not going to matter?” she told the Post.

And if you take one look at the 28,300 comments (and counting) on the Washington Post article, it quickly becomes apparent why Ford felt this way. So many of the remarks accuse her of coming forward now in the so-called "eleventh hour" of the confirmation hearings as a last-ditch effort by Democrats to stop Kavanaugh (and for the record, he absolutely should be stopped given his views on women's health alone) or because she wants a piece of that juicy #MeToo fame that has helped launch the careers of so many accusers.

More: Roe v. Wade Is Terrifyingly Vulnerable Right Now — Here's What You Need to Know

Except it hasn't. Sure, we have made more progress in that area than we have in decades between the takedowns of powerful men like Harvey Weinstein and Matt Lauer, but let's not forget that someone who has been accused of sexual assault by numerous women and was caught on tape bragging about groping women is currently residing in the White House.

And while accusing someone famous of sexual assault means that the traumatic, horrible thing that happened to you is now out there in the public, people who come forward about being sexually assaulted by non-famous people also face their fair share of attacks on their character, credibility and mental health.

This is something I've experienced firsthand. A few years ago, I wrote about my experience reporting my sexual assault to the New York Police Department. The man who reached under my dress and grabbed my vulva was not, to my knowledge, famous, so I arguably had nothing to gain from spending my Saturday at my local precinct trying to convince the officers on duty that the incident wasn't my fault. (Seriously.)

Then the comments and unsolicited advice started pouring in. Most fell into one of two camps: 1) that I made the whole thing up for attention or 2) that it was my fault regardless. I received several tweets from now-blocked users referencing the fact that I'm an ethics professor and questioning my credentials because I had so clearly fabricated this entire story. So when I read comments that Ford was able to use her background as a psychologist in order to "beat" the lie detector test she took (and passed) regarding her incident with Kavanaugh, I again could see why it was such a hard decision for her to come forward.

I can also relate to the significant impact coming forward about sexual assault can have on your mental health. Of course, I'm not comparing my situation to Ford's, but even on an incredibly smaller scale, making this accusation and then discussing it publicly exacerbated my depression and anxiety. Honestly, the victim-blaming I experienced the day I reported it to the NYPD followed by the comments and messages I received spelling out exactly what I did wrong was much worse. Here are some of the ways reporting a sexual assault can impact your mental health.

Reliving the assault

Before we even get into the victim-blaming, it's important to acknowledge that speaking about assault means not only acknowledging that you experienced a traumatic event, but also can involve a reliving of the assault.

"Feelings of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and shock are all mental health concerns that can surround sexual assault and make it hard to make a report," says Shadeen Francis, a marriage and family therapist that specializes in sex therapy and social justice.

Victim-blaming

Then there's the small matter of being blamed for your own sexual assault.

"There is still so much shame and humiliation attached to being a victim," says Dr. Fran Walfish, Beverly Hills family and relationship psychotherapist, author of The Self-Aware Parent, regular expert child psychologist on The Doctors and costar of Sex Box. "Victims are still often blamed and held accountable for the assault and end up feeling either that they brought it on somehow or could have prevented it. That is simply not true."

Dr. Kelly Moore, a clinical psychologist, tells SheKnows that this culture of victim-blaming and -shaming often prevents people from coming forward about an incident at all. Questions like "What were you wearing?" or "Why didn't you fight the attacker off?" send victims the message "that they could have prevented the assault or that they were too weak to stop it once it started," adds Moore. These questions can be even worse when the person being accused is someone famous or in a high-profile position, like Kavanaugh, and every detail of the accuser's story is scrutinized.

Another reason people may not come forward about sexual assault is because they know their sexual history could be used as a weapon to negate the assault they experienced, explains Moore. "But the truth is that if a person says no or is under the influence and consent is not given, it doesn't matter what they were wearing, who they've been with before or anything like that...." she says. "If a person continues without consent, it's wrong."

Imbalance of power

Furthermore, sexual assault often involves an imbalance of power, so fear of retaliation is also a common barrier to speaking up, explains Francis. "We can’t have this conversation without acknowledging that assault survivors are routinely silenced, shamed, blamed and discredited when they try to seek justice," she says. "These societal reactions are amplified for marginalized groups and people considered less credible, which greatly discourages people from reporting."

Not believing victims

And let's not forget that people who report sexual assault or other crimes are frequently not believed. "It can be traumatic to disclose an assault and not be believed," notes Francis. "Similar mental responses to the initial trauma of assault can be expected when a report is turned around to undermine or shame a survivor, the most common of which are post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression and anxiety as well as disorders of coping like substance abuse and eating disorders."

More: Our Narrow View of Sexual Assault Is Letting People Get Away With It

If there is a silver lining from people like Ford speaking out, it's that it could help others who have been sexually assaulted feel less alone.

"The overwhelming public attention drawn to high-profile cases such as Christine Ford’s accusal of Brett Kavanaugh's sexual assault exemplifies this," explains Walfish. "This event is going to help so many victims feel less alone and less isolated and less stigmatized."

Here's hoping that's the case — and that Ford's sacrifice does in fact stop Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Princess Charlotte May Be a Natural Boss, but She's a Killer Host Too

Oh, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. The second child of Prince William and Duchess Catherine (aka Kate Middleton) just does us in with her spunky, bigger-than-life personality. Case in point: The scene-stealer even managed to swipe the limelight in this family photo following the christening of her little brother, Prince Louis.

The little princess with a big attitude even stole the show at the baptism when she royally forbade photographers from following her family into a private brunch by commanding, "NOT YOU!" in a tone worthy of any great queen. Charlotte is fourth in line to the throne, but we're pretty sure she'd be able to assume the title tomorrow without much problem. The kid is a royal natural, people. Did we mention she also photobombed a certain royal wedding with her tongue stuck out?

MorePrincess Charlotte & Prince George Steal the Show on Royal Visit to Poland

But we're loving the latest reports that Princess Charlotte has another cherished role besides boss of Kensington Palace: perfect host. We are suddenly very much in the mood for a tea and a watercress sandwich.

It's Us Weekly that reports Charlotte adores approaching guests to take their food and drink orders. She'll apparently offer them tea or coffee or sweets — melt, melt, melt. The magazine reports that she's "very bubbly," like a fine glass of Champagne. Go, Charlotte!

Add style influencer to her résumé while you're at it. The annual U.K. Retail Report by eBay was surprised to find that Charlotte's recent flower crown at Uncle Harry's wedding created a flower crown boom on eBay, with searches for similar items rising by 60 percent. Charlotte also ranked third place as a fashion influencer(!!), following her mom, Kate (No. 1), and her new auntie, Duchess Meghan (née Markle) of Sussex (No. 2).

Seriously, whatever Charlotte wears publicly sells out within minutes. That's pretty impressive for someone who probably can't spell her entire title just yet. A massive fan of Princess Charlotte, Harper Beckham recently took some crowning inspiration from her. Wow! The daughter of Posh Spice is taking style moves from Princess Charlotte. The mind reels.

Not to get all political on you or anything, but we're totally OK if Prince William and Prince George decide to abdicate the throne and leave the family business to Charlotte. It's unlikely, but, oh, would it ever be fun to watch.

All the Other Celeb Names We're Mispronouncing According to Chrissy Teigen

If you’ve been feeling like your life is a lie since Chrissy Teigen revealed the real pronunciation of her name on Twitter earlier this week, the model’s appearance at the Emmys probably only made things worse. On Monday, while chatting with E!’s Giuliana Rancic, Teigen reiterated her last name's incorrect pronunciation — along with a few others. And, naturally, we’re all shook.

When asked on the red carpet about her last-name revelation, Teigen took a minute to fully set the record straight. “It’s Tie-gen,” she told Rancic, at which point her husband, John Legend, added, “Tie-gen is the official, real Norwegian name.”

Mind still blown.

That’s not all, though. Teigen also reminded everyone that her name isn’t the only celebrity name that is getting mispronounced all the time. According to Teigen, she was inspired to speak up after hearing another star reveal her own name-bungling debacle: Ariana Grande.

More: This Is Why Chrissy Teigen Is Still Chrissy Teigen & Not "Chrissy Legend"

In case you missed it, Grande brought to light during an August interview with Apple Beats 1 that her famous last name isn’t exactly what you think it is.

“My grandparents said Gran-dee. My brother [Frankie Grande] kind of changed it to Grawn-day because Gran-dee was kind of like the Americanized version of it,” Grande explained, clarifying, “I grew up saying, 'Gran-dee.'”

Alluding to this moment while chatting with Rancic, Teigen joked, “That’s way bigger. Mine is the least of anyone’s worries.”

In that vein, Teigen also referenced the fact that we’ve all apparently been saying Rihanna’s name wrong too. (Seriously, though, why hasn’t someone corrected us?!)

This isn’t exactly new news, but it still shocks us every time we hear it. In a Snapchat video that surfaced in 2015, Rihanna refers to herself not as "Ri-ah-nuh" — the way many of us pronounce her name — but, rather, "Ri-anne-uh."

We weren’t ready for all of these bombs from Teigen, who we're dubbing the official celebrity name-truther from here on out. It's really only a matter of time before she reveals yet another celebrity name we’ve been botching our whole lives — and we can't wait for it to happen.

Here's What Bryce Dallas Howard Told Us About Working With Chris Pratt

When it comes to seasoned pros in Hollywood, Bryce Dallas Howard tops the list. She's not only been acting since the late '80s, she's grown up in the film industry, getting to spend time on set with her father, Ron Howard, director of films like Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind. With a lifetime of experience, you'd think that Howard would be super chill about her work. Boy, oh boy, were we wrong.

When we chatted with her about her latest film, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (released on digital on Sept. 4 and available on Blu-Ray on Tuesday), Howard's excitement was palpable. Not only was she excited to talk about the film and the development of her character, Claire Dearing, but the brightness with which she spoke about working with costar Chris Pratt after laughing through telling us what's making her feel powerful right now made us feel warmed to the core.

We think Howard is a ray of sunshine, but you can read our interview with her and decide for yourself.

SheKnows: Let's start off with something fun. What’s making you feel powerful right now?

Bryce Dallas Howard: I can't believe that I'm going to admit that, but [laughs] there's a new mix that [Amazon's] Alexa introduced me to and that I am all about. So, like three days ago, I said to Alexa, "Alexa, play fun music," and then Alexa said, "Playing Gay Pride Party," and it's the best thing I've ever heard and I can't stop listening to it. It's for anyone who wants to feel powerful, empowered, encouraged, jazzed up for workouts or getting ready in the morning or whatever. Say to Alexa, "Listen to Gay Pride Party," and it is incredible.

SK: This is your second time playing Claire Dearing in a Jurassic World movie, and this time, she gets to exercise her badass side a bit more. Do you relate to that in any way, or are there other ways you relate in real life?

BDH: Definitely. Even in [2015's Jurassic World], I remember Colin [Trevorrow], who wrote it and directed it, kept saying — I was like, "What is she like?" — "She's like, you." One time we were hanging out, and we're walking around my neighborhood and there was a house was for sale, and I walked into the house with him. I was like, "Hey, do you mind if we just check this out quickly?" And we walked in there and I was asking the realtor questions, [...] and I think the realtor mentioned something like, "You know, you can rent it out," and I was like, "Oh, really? Because I didn't think the zoning in this neighborhood allows for you to do that." [...] Then I exit the conversation and Colin goes, "That's Claire." So I think that there's an assertiveness, that kind of an unapologetic assertiveness, that I definitely really relate to.

[As for Fallen Kingdom], I would also hope that in terms of her sort of righteousness and her unwavering dedication to her mission — I mean, I think that's something also that I certainly relate to when I'm focused on something, like a dog with a bone.

SK: This is also your second time working with Chris Pratt, and we just have to know: What’s it like working with him?

BDH: It's honestly the best. I highly recommend it [laughs]; it's great for everyone. Everyone should get the full Chris Pratt experience, honestly. He's an impeccable human being and a blast and I adore him. He's so funny. He's a total extrovert. I'm a secret introvert, like a talkative introvert, so it's perfect because when we're on set, I will whisper into his ear and he's like this very charismatic, incredible leader, and yeah, it's just good.

SK: As a working mother, I’m curious to know if you ever had to deal with feelings of mom guilt in splitting time between work and your family and, if so, how you worked through that.

BDH: Well, I mean, it's a great question, and I think one that all of us ask ourselves and are constantly navigating. What I would say for me is it's about routines that are consistent and add up over time. So, it's a little bit like investing in the stock market or something in compound interest. If you take 10 percent of your savings and 10 percent of what you make and you put it in savings automatically and you automate it, you don't even think about it but it just is adding up. So, in terms of family, if there are routines in place and traditions in place that they don't matter how much you're traveling or how tired you are, whatever. It's just that's an automatic, a non-negotiable.

SK: Are there any values or life lessons you’re working on passing along to your children at this moment in time/in their lives?

BDH: Right now I'm reading a book called The Opposite of Spoiled, which is about finances and know-how and [a little bit about] parenting. [...] But the biggest answer to your question is a few years ago, I called the Theosophical Society in Chicago and [...] I literally asked him, "My kids are getting to an age where I'm trying to figure out like what to teach them. What do you guys teach kids? Do you guys have like a Hebrew school or Sunday school program? What do you recommend for kids?"

What they said, I always took to heart. They said the most important thing is that you, as parents, are on your journey and that you are exposing [your kids] to your journey of figuring out what you know your moral compass is, the philosophy in your life and what your spiritual journey is. You show them that, through your example, but what you actually teach them is three things: healthy body, healthy mind and the brotherhood of man. So, it's basically like how to teach them how to have a healthy body, have a healthy mind, and you teach them the golden rule, essentially how to be a part of a community and how to treat others in the same way that you would want to be treated.

I was like, "You know what, that's really good." So, sometimes when things get overcomplicated or I get overwhelmed or I feel like as a parent I've missed out on some things, I'm like, "OK, of those three kinds of subjects, what does my nagging complaint or concern fall under?" and then let me home in on the big picture issue. That usually helps me kind of figure it out.

Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel Flash Secret Sign to Son Silas During Emmy Awards

Nope, that sign flashed by Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake on the red carpet at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards was not an Illuminati deal. Sorry, conspiracy theorists. It was actually their special secret sign for their son, Silas, who had to sit out the festivities due to this thing called bedtime.

The happily married pair served up joint interviews on the red carpet, but clearly, their fave part of the evening was their hello to Silas, now 3.

Access Hollywood's red carpet crew members were the lucky ducks who caught the sweet moment. The network tweeted a video clip, saying: “Parenting is a full time job, even on the #emmys red carpet! @jtimberlake and @JessicaBiel send their 3-year-old son Silas a special signal that absolutely melted our hearts.”

Timberlake posted on Instagram a super-glam shot of them headed to the Emmys with the simple caption: "We got a babysitter. #Emmys."

MoreJessica Biel on Self-Care Amid Chaos

Biel wasn't complaining about her Emmy nom for lead actress in a limited series, though. When the couple chatted with E! Live from the Red Carpet, The Sinner actor raved, "It means everything to me. To be nominated for the first time for this, it’s just an absolute, massive honor and a dream and it’s just wonderful. I’m just very, very excited.”

MorePeople Are Mom-Shaming Jessica Biel for a Truly Stupid Reason

Meanwhile, Timberlake beamed at his wife. Yeah, it's rough to be Jessica Biel.

“I’m more geeked out than she is,” Timberlake said. “I found out about the nomination before she did — she was in Europe, actually, when the nominations came out — but, yeah, I was there to watch her option this and develop it from scratch… I saw how much she put into it. And so, I’m just so proud to be here and see this happen for her.”

Could they be any cuter?

Thandie Newton May Have Confirmed She's Returning to Westworld

While many exciting things happened at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards last night, one in particular has Westworld fans feeling some kind of way. Well, two, to be truly accurate — and they both revolve around Thandie Newton. First, she took home an Emmys statue for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series. But it also may be time for fans to rejoice, because the actor gave an interview in which she made it seem like she’ll be returning to Westworld.

More: The Internet's Favorite Theories About  Westworld  Season 3

Here’s what went down. While speaking with Entertainment Tonight backstage, the recent news that Aaron Paul is joining the series came up. “I haven’t met him!” Newton said. “I found out just a couple of days ago, [but I’m] really excited!” As of right now, any details about Paul’s role on the series are being kept under lock and key. And, like the rest of us, Newton’s curiosity is piqued.

“We have such strong actors on the show, and to have someone of his caliber… he’s got such great energy. I have no idea what character he’s going to play, or anything. So, it’s very intriguing, too,” she admitted.

Then Newton dropped a potential bombshell, saying, “What I can’t wait for is to go back on set and to be with everybody from Westworld, because I just know how proud they are tonight and how thrilled they are for me. But I feel so thrilled for them because I could not have achieved any of it without the costume, the writing, the makeup, the production design, all the elements that go into the work that we do.”

Is it just us, or did that sound like an unequivocal confirmation that Newton will be coming back for season three? This comes as a bit of a surprise to fans, however exciting it may be, because (spoiler alert) it looked as if Newton's Westworld character, Maeve, died a tragic, selfless death for the sake of her daughter during the season two finale. But was that the end for Maeve? You never know with Westworld, but Newton's comments are giving us reason to hope we'll see more of her in the future.

And now, thanks to Newton’s comments about coming back to set and being excited about the idea of working with Paul, we think we’ve got our answer. Thankfully, it seems to be the one we were hoping for — long “live” Maeve!

Pretty much everything about Giada De Laurentiis is picture-perfect, from her megawatt smile to her flawless kitchen. Well, we can add another item to that list, because we just saw the Dutch oven she created with Italian cookware company Lagostina, and we're in love.

The 4-quart Dutch oven is stainless steel with a copper-bonded base and a hammered copper lid. It's being released just in time for cooler weather, which means braises, roasts, stews and long-simmered sauces are all on the menu. What better way to make a one-pot meal feel truly special than with an exquisite piece of cookware?

More: 14 Things About Giada De Laurentiis You Probably Never Knew

Unlike a bulky electric slow cooker, this pot can easily transition from cooking vessel to serving dish. It has stay-cool steel handles, so you don't have to worry about burning yourself or your dinner guests when you set it on the table to serve from.

De Laurentiis created the Dutch oven as part of Lagostina's "Bring Back the Sunday Dinner" campaign, which encourages families and communities to sit down to a shared meal at least once a week.

One-pot meals are a great way to do this. You don't have to worry about managing multiple dishes on the stove and in the oven, and when it's time to eat, everybody can just dig in. Anything that makes it easier to share a meal with our loved ones is a win in our book.

The pot is being sold at Macy's for $100, and it was available on Amazon for $70 but has already sold out. If you want to cook like De Laurentiis this winter, you'd better get your hands on one of these babies soon before they're all gone.

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson’s brood is about to get a little bit bigger. On Tuesday, the singer-slash-entrepreneur enlisted her kids — 6-year-old daughter Maxwell and 5-year-old son Ace — to help her announce that they’re getting another sibling

In fact, not only is Simpson pregnant, but the precious family of four (for now) already knows the sex of the baby, which they also revealed on Tuesday. The two-part Instagram post Simpson made was actually a super-cute gender reveal that clued in Simpson’s family — and all the rest of us — that she’s having another girl.

Kit Harington Credits Game of Thrones With Helping Him Meet the Love of His Life

Game of Thrones may be ending after its eighth season wraps up in 2019, but the legacy of the HBO series or its impact on the fans and cast alike certainly won't end with it. Consider the response from GoT star Kit Harington, who had the sweetest response when asked how the HBO series changed his life during the backstage interviews at the Emmys on Monday night.

More: This  Game of Thrones  Prequel Is Officially Happening

While at the first big award show of the season (Harington was there on behalf of GoT, which ultimately snagged an award for outstanding drama series) many cast members stopped to speak with reporters backstage, which is where Harington revealed his sentimental side.

“I met my wife in this show. In that way, it gave me my future family and my life from here on in. That’s the main thing it did for me,” the actor told Variety during a cast interview following their big win.

Suffice it to say, Harington is very aware and grateful for his time on the series. “It’s changed it completely,” he said. “The last 10 years. You cannot ask for a better job to have in your twenties, to take you through your twenties than to be an actor in Game of Thrones. It’s been the most amazing thing. It’s changed it completely.”

But Harington isn't the only one who recognizes the power of GoT or the people in it. In fact, Leslie is just as excited for the show’s final episodes to air (and to watch her husband in them) as the next fan.

“I for sure ask Kit not to show me his excitement after he has read an episode, simply because I don’t want to read anything in his eyes,” Leslie told Entertainment Tonight in March. “I know the anticipation is killing a lot of people, and my God the build-up is fantastic. I can’t wait until next year. So when he’s at the other end of the room and reading the episode, it’s like, no… we are not going to have eye contact for a long time. Go make a cup of tea. Calm down.”

We'll probably never get over how cute it is that Harington and Leslie are each other's biggest fans, and Harington's comments at the Emmys only remind that these two truly are meant for one another.

The show follows an afternoon of engaging in the culture, dance and games of the people of Hawai’i, Tonga, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Fiji, Tahiti and Samoa. The living museum is set up as separate villages and offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life on each of these island nations.

The Bishop Museum is a state-sponsored educational center where the history and science of Polynesians can be explored indoors. The Waikiki trolley makes this destination an easy ride from downtown Honolulu, and there are fun family events, film series and cultural experiences available here year-round.

Sea Life Park

Love sea turtles, seals and dolphins but don’t want an ocean encounter? Visit Sea Life Park where you can touch, feed and interact with these sea animals as well as sharks in a controlled environment. Like SeaWorld in San Diego, there are also live shows that feature the animals at play, including the Hawaiian monk seal, penguins and the rare wholphin. If feeding the fish isn’t adventurous enough for your little one, The Dolphin Aloha encounter allows for tots’ to get up close to dolphins without having to get in the water with them. Feeding the cockatiels and lovebirds in their open-air aviary with ice pop sticks is also an exciting experience for kids and adults alike.

Malls & meals

Authentic Japanese Food from Sobaya at The Lanai

Mall shopping is pleasurable for moms, but the variety of food options they offer is also a big draw for the whole family. The Lanai @ Ala Moana Center, the world’s largest open-air shopping center, offers variety in the way of poke bowls, Moroccan roasted chicken and loco moco burgers, all feet away from each other, allowing you and the kids to eat whatever suits your picky palates.

At the International Marketplace, The Street Food Hall is a step up from the usual, offering 12 different restaurant concepts that will satisfy the kids’ pizza cravings while giving you access to Ramen noodles, Texas brisket and more. Wash it all down at The Myna Bird Tiki Bar, where passion fruit punch, Jungle Bird and Cure the Cafard challenge the mai tai for tastiest cocktail.

At the Royal Hawaiian Center, you can enjoy their live entertainment Tuesday through Saturday as well as free classes in lei-making, lauhala-weaving, hula and ukulele playing Monday through Saturday. They even have a hula lesson just for kids. The RHC’s Pa'ina Lanai Food Court offers familiar staples like Subway, Panda Express and Mexican food at Maui Tacos. Don’t miss Island Vintage Coffee, where they serve 100 percent Kona coffee along with perfect acai bowls and smoothies for adults and a keiki menu too boot.

Where locals go

Hiking Trail at Waimea Valley

As you plan the tourist destinations, remember to check out local libraries and Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation website. There, you will find free events for kids that are low- to no-cost along with opportunities to explore the island like a local.

There are half a dozen botanical gardens on Oahu, but if you want to lose yourself in a guided nature hike, Waimea Valley is the place to go. Learn about the history of this sacred valley and take a short stroller-friendly hike to a 45-foot waterfall that cascades into the 30-foot-deep pond. Swimming is allowed with life vests, and there are showers and changing rooms for families to use.

Get a taste of local vendors at the Kapi'olani Community College Farmers Market and Kaka'ako Farmers Market. Many locals also volunteer to support the sustainability of local farming. Try your hand at ecotourism as you and your little one get in on purposefully muddy fun at Kako’o Oiwi in He’eia. Say hi to the dog and pig that call the farm home, watch the plentiful mimosa pudica plants shy away from the slightest touch, and see flowering breadfruit on the vine before ending the day with a rinse in the nearby river.

Go to Kono’s Restaurant for Pig LauLau and Papa Ole’s Kitchen (on Oahu’s North Shore) for the macadamia nut pancakes or Hawaiian Plate for authentic Hawaiian fare.

To lighten things up, visit Waialua Bakery, which has healthier options, including salads, sandwiches and tropical smoothies.

Try Portuguese "doughnuts" called malasadas, a Hawaiian food favorite. Locals point to Leonard’s as the best on Oahu.

Shave ice bucket list

Uncle Clay's Shave Ice

You can’t leave any of the Hawaiian Islands without enjoying some shave ice. The softest melt-in-your-mouth goodness I’ve ever had is Waiola Shave Ice, where you can get the Obama Special of passion fruit, lemon-lime and cherry. Add lilikoi cream for an extra-sweet boost. Shimazu Store offers up the best presentation and variety of flavors. Both Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha and Monsarrat Shave Ice are options with locally sourced artisanal syrups for those of us who prefer all-natural to high-fructose corn syrup. If you’re on the North Shore and need to cool off, Matsumoto Shave Ice is a fan favorite, but don’t miss nearby Aoki’s Shave Ice, a fourth-generation family-run shop in Haleiwa Town.

Don’t forget your leis

Leis intertwined

Whether you get it upon arrival or on your way home, don’t miss out on the traditional lei greeting. Arrange a greeting directly by contacting Greeters of Hawaii at 808-836-0161 (don't forget about the significant time difference between the continental 48 and the islands!) or visit one of the 12 lei stands located at the airport entry road before Terminal 1 if you’d like to grab some fresh flower leis before your flight. Aloha!

McDonald's iconic apple pies hold a dear space in people's hearts, so when they change the recipe? Uh, yeah, everyone collectively loses their minds.

The chain just announced they'll be reworking the recipe for their famous dessert to make it... healthier. *Cue screams of horror*

Featuring less sugar and fewer ingredients overall, the new pie also has a lattice pastry top instead of a full crust.

Tiffany Briggs, a spokesperson for McDonald's, said in a press release, "Our new freshly baked Apple pie recipe is in line with other positive changes we have made," pointing out that in the past few years, they've made changes such as removing artificial preservatives from Chicken McNuggets and switched to using real butter in their breakfast sandwiches.

The pie also now features sliced apples instead of diced, has cinnamon in the filling and uses real butter.

Nevertheless, a lot of people aren't convinced the switch has been a positive one, nearly matching the fury of the public when McDonald's switched to baked pies instead of fried.

Yet, for all the naysaying, there are some folks who are loving the new recipe.

I guess we'll just have to see for ourselves whether the new recipe is a success.

Sesame Street's Bert & Ernie Were Gay, a Former Writer Confirms

It’s apparently not all sunny days within the Sesame Street universe. A discussion over whether or not beloved odd couple Bert and Ernie are actually in a romantic relationship dominated Twitter on Tuesday after a former Sesame Street writer revealed the two characters were gay and meant to be perceived that way — a claim the current officials for the show quickly refuted.

We should say right now that this isn’t the first time the idea that Bert and Ernie could be more than platonic pals has been kicked around. Given that the two characters, per the Sesame Street canon, have always lived together and have always had a deep bond, adults have speculated whether these two were coded to be gay. However, this may very well be the first time someone with a close connection to the long-running children’s show has claimed it to be true and unabashedly stated it on the record.

More: 7 Ways to Be a Good Parent to Your LGBTQ Child

In a new interview with Queerty, ex-Sesame Street staffer Mark Saltzman, who contributed to writing for Bert and Ernie, admits that the duo’s relationship was likely informed by his own relationship with acclaimed editor Arnold Glassman, who died in 2003. Per Saltzman, “more than one person referred to Arnie & I as ‘Bert & Ernie.’”

The fact that these iconic characters might be more than just friends was something that other people picked up on, Saltzman said, sometimes to comedic effect.

“I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked ‘are Bert & Ernie lovers?’ And that, coming from a preschooler was fun,” he said. “And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it.”

But, says Saltzman, he feels as though Bert and Ernie being gay could very well have been an organic sort of self-reflection.

“And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were [gay]. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them,” he said, adding that he was very much like Ernie and Arnie very much like Bert. “So I don’t think I’d know how else to write them, but as a loving couple. I wrote sketches… Arnie’s OCD would create friction with how chaotic I was. And that’s the Bert & Ernie dynamic.”

It didn’t take long for Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind the show, to respond.

In a statement via Twitter, they wrote, “As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

Additionally, one of the series’ creators, Frank Oz, took to Twitter to voice his thoughts on the topic.

“It seems Mr. Mark Saltzman was asked if Bert & Ernie are gay. It’s fine that he feels they are. They’re not, of course. But why that question? Does it really matter? Why the need to define people as only gay? There’s much more to a human being than just straightness or gayness,” wrote Oz.

One could argue, naturally, that if the characters’ sexual orientation doesn’t matter (as implied by the Sesame Workshop and Oz) then there is no need to issue a public denial of Saltzman’s personal feelings. One could also point out that the question of being gay or straight does very much matter to people, including some young people, for whom seeing a touchstone on-screen would make a world of difference in helping them understand the broad spectrum of human sexuality.

The conversation over whether or not Bert and Ernie should be considered gay and in a relationship quickly dominated Twitter, with many weighing on with their hot takes on the matter.

Did Sesame Workshop miss an opportunity to simply let people draw their own conclusions about these lovable Muppets? Can't we just let Bert and Ernie live?

Why Frozen Shoulder Is a Feminist Issue

$
0
0

What is frozen shoulder, and how is does it relate to feminism? I promise you there’s a connection.

First, a bit of time travel. Nothing crazy or sci-fi, just back to a few winters ago…

Ah, Christmas holidays in snowy Wisconsin, surrounded by my boyfriend’s bustling family and the homey aromas of stew, melty cheese sauce and his mom’s buttery homemade almond cookies that are one of my weaknesses.

At Christmastime, this nice Jewish girl goes all in for Santa Claus and sweets. That’s me in the corner trying to stay out of the way of cooks and kids and eager dogs, wondering if just one more of those insanely yummy cookies would qualify as a reasonable lunch, butter being a legit protein source. I reach up for a mug — because a cup of coffee is the BFF of an almond cookie — and feel a twinge of pain in my right shoulder. I cannot recall an injury, so I move onward to the cookie tin and hope the pain will go away.

As the days pass, my right arm grows stiffer and weaker. I have to use my left arm to give my right arm a leg up, so to speak. By the time we get home to Brooklyn, the pain is a steady drone. No more yoga for me, but like busy women everywhere, I soldier on, working and organizing family life. Within a month, I am in sleepless, excruciating pain, edging closer to nine on the sad-face scale, even on a steady diet of Advil. I’ve been through childbirth, definitely a 10 on the pain scale, but at the end, I had an adorable baby to show for my effort. This is relentless — 24-7. No end, and no cute baby. I can barely hold a fork. I have to sign checks using my left hand to support my right.

More: 7 Things I Feared About Menopause That Didn’t Happen (& One That Did!)

My medical mystery

I make the rounds of physical therapists and specialists who cater to the injuries of professional football and tennis players. Torn rotator cuff is the diagnosis. My shoulder is inspected and injected with cortisone, but the pain continues, reaching code red, like someone is jabbing an ice pick into my shoulder. I can’t focus on work. I need help dressing. I’ve never felt so helpless in my adult life. What the *bleep* is happening to me?

Then I remember that my brother had some kind of shoulder issue a few years earlier. He reminds me that our mother also had a bad shoulder and sends me to Dr. Vijay Vad, a physiatrist at New York City’s Hospital for Special Surgery. In the days prior to my appointment, I resort to more red wine than is good for me (it seems to dampen the pain more enjoyably than Advil) and reread George Eliot’s Middlemarch, which at 800-plus pages keeps me distracted in the 19th century. Dorothea’s marriage woes are definitely a super-10 sad face on the emotional pain scale.

When Vad examines my shoulder and asks me to perform a few simple arm movements, I can barely move the dangling appendage on my right side. “This is adhesive capsulitis,” he says, “Frozen shoulder.” He describes the disease as a spontaneous inflammation of the soft tissue surrounding the shoulder joint. “I see so many women your age with this condition. But don’t worry, we’re going to fix this.” I’m so relieved I do some bawling right there in his office and feel better already.

He identifies a number of risk factors for this disease: 5 percent of women overall, mostly in perimenopause and menopause (that’s me, and probably you, dear reader), 20 percent of diabetics; people with autoimmune disorders including thyroid disease, cardiac patients, patients who’ve had upper-body surgery and people with a family history (my brother and my mom).

Vad says that the winter onset time of my frozen shoulder is also a hallmark of the disease. But the majority of his frozen shoulder patients are women just about my age. And yes, decreasing hormones are to blame. Frozen shoulder is a midlife woman thing. Ask around. I guarantee that if you haven’t had this nasty business, one of your friends has.

Will my shoulder ever unfreeze?

Vad explains four distinct stages of the disease, each with an optimal treatment solution. His mantra is early diagnosis, but unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen. Because the disease will eventually resolve itself, patients are often still told to “wait it out,” resulting in many months or even years of needless suffering.

In Stage 1, which is where I was when I reached for a coffee cup and winced, a sonogram-guided cortisone injection into the shoulder joint can eliminate the pain and quickly restore mobility.

By now, I was in Stage 2, with severe pain and stiffness. Most doctors will advise arthroscopic surgery for this stage, which is invasive and expensive and can result in chronic pain… and a refrozen shoulder.

In Stage 3, the shoulder is frozen completely stiff and pain subsides. For this stage, arthroscopic surgery is the only treatment option.

Stage 4 is described as the “thawing” period.

Vad prefers to treat my Stage 2 case with a brief, inexpensive procedure called capsule distension. After a local anesthetic is administered, the shoulder joint is injected with saline to flush out and expand the joint, which has shrunk. Vad describes the texture of the inflamed joint as something like a well-chewed piece of gum. Yuck. After the saline, in goes some cortisone. Nice. Fifteen minutes, no incision, done. An ice pack, and you can head home to binge-watch seasons of 30 Rock.

Following my successful capsule distension, I worked with a physical therapist to regain strength and mobility. I am back to Plank pose and Downward Dog. I have let go of headstands and Reverse Prayer for now, but I’ve got biceps again, and I can reach for coffee mugs, which is awesome.

Frozen shoulder syndrome & menopause: The slap in the face from insurance

Unfortunately for all the wonderful women out there who will get frozen shoulder, there is no insurance code for capsule distension. No insurance code means insufficient reimbursement for physicians, which means that most would rather do the expensive, invasive procedure for which they have been well-trained and will be fully reimbursed, than a brief, inexpensive procedure that requires minimal recovery time.

I was covered for my procedure because it was conducted in a hospital operating room in the city where I lived. But most women who could benefit from capsule distension treatment will not have access to a doctor willing or able to perform it. Vad treats patients who fly in from all over the country and beyond. But this is obviously not an option for most of us, and that is just crazy.

This is why frozen shoulder is a feminist issue. Considering the impact this badass disease has on our productivity and personal joy, we should all be banging on doors lobbying for capsule distention. As with other medical situations women face — childbirth, for example, or abortion, for another — if men developed frozen shoulder in similar numbers, you can be sure that this inexpensive procedure would be widely available. Instead, even if you ask for capsule distension, your doctor might edge you toward arthroscopy. Our hardworking female shoulders carry enough burdens without the pain of recovery from needless major surgery.

Vad looks to ongoing research to identify the underlying causes of adhesive capsulitis and other issues that affect women in midlife. He recommends an anti-inflammatory diet, and he’s a big believer in turmeric and oral vitamin D, which can have a positive impact on back pain, depression, and arthritis. I can personally attest to the benefits of all these strategies in keeping my 40-plus body flexible and healthy.

More: Turns Out Coconut Oil Might Actually Be Unhealthy — Here’s How You Should Really Use It

Until a miracle pill comes along that will zap adhesive capsulitis after Stage 1, Vad hopes to create an environment where women in midlife are more informed and empowered. “With early intervention, we can save you months or years of suffering,” he says, restating his mantra. “If you have pain in your shoulder and there was no trauma and you are beginning to lose range of motion, you should get to a doctor immediately. If a few weeks of physical therapy do not bring good results, you should demand treatment for adhesive capsulitis. If you feel you might have a frozen shoulder, don’t sit and wait — take charge.”

Which sounds like good advice for all our life challenges.

Grey's Anatomy fans, the two-hour season 15 premiere is right around the corner, but until then you need to check out the key art that was just released for the upcoming season. On Thursday, ABC revealed the new photo, which will please Meredith Grey fans greatly.

More: Grey's Anatomy Just Made a Major LGBTQ Casting Choice — & Fans Will Love It

As you can see below, the key art shows a very happy Meredith. She is wearing a huge smile on her face. Be sure to also take note of the tagline, which reads, "15 seasons of feels."

First of all, that tagline is super-accurate. The first 14 seasons of Grey's gave fans nothing but feels, and it seems like season 15 (how has it been that long already?) will do the same.

As for Meredith, well, it sure seems like a happy season is ahead for the doctor. Let's hope that's the case. She's been through a lot over the years, so keep those fingers crossed this season really will give the drama's main character genuine happiness in her life.

More: Kim Raver's Grey's Anatomy Storyline Is Getting an Upgrade in Season 15

Based on everything showrunner Krista Vernoff has teased thus far, it sure sounds like this season will not only bring Meredith joy, but also love. In addition to Vernoff dubbing season 15 the "season of love," she also told TV Line in September, "I can’t tease who she will end up with, but I can say that it is going to be a joyful, funny, complicated journey to get there."

See? Meredith's journey this season will be "joyful" and "funny," which means she must be smiling a lot, as teased in the key art.

Plus, like Vernoff also told TV Line in August, Meredith is "very much part of our Season of Love." The showrunner also dished, "The question this season is not 'Will Meredith Grey find love again,' but 'With whom will she find love?'"

More: The First Photos of Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Are Here, & They're Promising

As for whether or not she'll find love with DeLuca (have you seen the season 15 trailer?) or Nashville alum Chris Carmack's "ortho god" character, Link, remains unknown.

Fans will just have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what and who is waiting for Meredith this season. All that said, it's definitely comforting to know lighter and more freeing times are ahead for her.

Grey's Anatomy season 15 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 8/7c on ABC.

Kelly Clarkson Confirms Her Talk Show Is Happening & Teases What to Expect

Remember those rumors that Kelly Clarkson was getting her own talk show? Well, not only are they true, but now we also know a little bit about what that show might be like (other than awesome, which is a given with Clarkson as host). During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, the pop superstar spilled the beans on her new gig.

First, Clarkson revealed that last year’s winner of The Voice, Brynn Cartelli, will be joining her on tour next year. “She’s opening, and Kelsea Ballerini. We’re starting in January. It’s cool,” said Clarkson. Which, c’mon, would be exciting on its own.

More: Kelly Clarkson Has Strong Words About Her Weight & Mental Health

But then, Clarkson casually slipped in the confirmation we’ve all been waiting for. “I’m doing this thing to kind of prep for my talk show that’s gonna be next year, but we’re doing a live segment during my show,” she said, “so every night on tour, we’re going live online… I’ve got a lot of jobs, Jimmy!”

A visibly surprised Fallon quickly pointed out, “This is a big announcement because this has not been announced yet…” Although Clarkson brushed if off as no big deal (“Well, it’s been leaked!”), the enthusiastic response from Fallon and the audience makes it clear this is in fact kind of a big deal.

“Are we going head-to-head at 11:30? Fallon joked, feigning indignation. “How dare you take my job!”

According to Clarkson, the news came as just as big a shock to her as it did to anyone else. “I didn’t think I’d ever do it, but then, yeah, we shot the pilot. And it’s kind of… well, I love talking. It’s kind of like my favorite pastime, so...” Clarkson trailed off as the audience laughed.

She also admitted that she’s already found her weakness when it comes to the talk show format.

“It’s hard for me to shut up, though. You have to listen to people who come on your show, and I just keep talking,” she revealed. That’s the only thing I’ve gotta work on: listening.”

More: Kelly Clarkson's Net Worth Just Came Out, & Wow

As if all this weren’t promising enough, Clarkson added that her show will appear right before The Ellen DeGeneres Show. So maybe we should all start having mandatory forced laugh sessions now to prepare our stomach muscles and laugh boxes (that’s totally a thing, right?) for the back-to-back hilarity we’ll soon be laughing our way through each day.

Fallon was all of us as he gushed, “Gosh, that’s going to be a good block right there.”

When asked about whether or not she’ll have a band, Clarkson offered up more details, revealing her band would be on the show — which would be “a little different,” since she’s also obviously still a singer-slash-entertainer.

“We sing every day on the show and do this fan request thing. It’s fun,” she said. “In the pilot, I got people to sing with me and do little skits. So, it’s very musical as well. It would be weird if it wasn’t.”

More: Kelly Clarkson Defends Herself Against Accusations From Eliminated Voice Contestant

And don’t worry — this isn’t one of those things you hear about and get all pumped about only for it not to happen. Per TVLine, The Kelly Clarkson Show, as it has been officially titled, has officially been picked up by NBC.

According to the network, it will be a “fun, energetic show that breaks with tradition.” Each episode will be filled with “remarkable stories, celebrity guests, spontaneous surprises, humor, heart and, of course, good music!”

Well, now we're just extra excited to see what the final result will look like. Is it 2019 yet?

Will Smith's Instagram Birthday Tribute to Jada Pinkett Smith Is the Best Gift

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith aren’t letting time dull their passion for each other. In fact, judging by Will Smith’s birthday tribute to his beautiful wife on Tuesday, the couple is more in love than ever after more than two decades together.

More: Will Smith Discovered the Only Key to Real Happiness

On Instagram, Smith posted a photo of the longtime couple celebrating Pinkett Smith’s birthday in the most relatable way: sleeping. In the snapshot, the aspirational duo snoozes side by side in their seats on a plane.

“Wow… 24 Birthdays together! Happy Bday, My Queen. Let’s Go Get 24 more,” Smith captioned the picture. And, for good measure, he also included a hilarious, oh-so ‘90s photo of them mean-mugging during their early years together.

Smith and Pinkett — who have a son, Jaden, 20, and a daughter, Willow, 17 — married in 1997 following a couple-years courtship. Although the Hollywood power couple has courted their fair share of controversy over the years for their super-honest approach to marriage, they’re a testament to the power of keeping it real.

“Thank God I have a husband who’s just a gangster partner because can you just imagine taking that road together from 25 to 44?” Pinkett Smith told Howard Stern during an interview on his Sirius radio show in 2015. “You’ve got to be strong… it takes work.”

She also explained that a huge factor in the longevity of their marriage is trusting each other to be the best version of themselves.

“Here’s what I trust: The man that Will is, is a man of integrity. He’s got all the freedom in the world… as long as Will can look in the mirror and be OK, I’m good,” she said.

More: Jada Pinkett Smith Is Slowly Changing Hollywood & Her Own Career

Smith clearly thinks just as highly of his wife, telling Tidal’s Rap Radar podcast in July of this year that they’ve stopped even referring to themselves as married. Rather, they think of themselves as life partners.

“There’s no deal breakers,” he said of getting to the point where you know you’ll be with someone the rest of your life. “There’s nothing she could do — ever. Nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support 'til death, you know what I mean, and it feels so good to get to that space where you’re not complaining, and worry, and demanding that a person be a certain thing.” We may need a second, folks, because the love is just too damn real.

Excitement is in the air as movie lovers anticipate the release of the best films of the year. Studios schedule these releases in the fall to keep the films fresh in people's minds during awards season, which kicks off with the Golden Globes on Jan. 6. It's still fairly early to predict any best picture winners, but the films on this list are certainly in the running.

To be more inclusive, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been busy inviting more women and people of color to be voting members this year, so we're excited to see how that translates into Oscar nominations.

While the majority of the movies on this list have yet to be released, there are a couple huge award contenders that have already been in theaters, such as Black Panther and First Reformed. Both were hands-down excellent movies and loved by critics.

Get ready to see the best costume dramas, biopics and one very famous remake hoping to rake in the statuettes in 2019.

Directed by Damien Chazelle (La La Land) and starring Ryan Gosling as astronaut Neil Armstrong and Claire Foy (The Queen) as Janet Armstrong, expect First Man to dominate all awards categories. Look for it in theaters Oct. 12.

What's exciting is that McCarthy gets to show her true acting chops in a dramatic role that will no doubt turn heads and earn her a best actress nomination. Look for it in the best picture category, and Malek will likely earn a best actor nomination. Bohemian Rhapsody will be in theaters Nov. 2.

5. Boy Erased

Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe star in Boy Erased, based on a true story about a teenage boy (Lucas Hedges) who's sent to conversion therapy after coming out to his preacher dad. Joel Edgerton writes, directs and also stars in this film about the breakdown of an American family. Look for it Nov. 2.

6. Widows

When four women — Veronica (Viola Davis), Alice (Elizabeth Debicki), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) and Belle (Cynthia Erivo) — discover their husbands are criminals and have all died, leaving them with a huge financial debt, they try to pull off a huge heist. With a script by Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn, 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen and Prime Suspect writer Lynda La Plante, look for Widows to be nominated in the best adapted screenplay category and Viola Davis to be nominated for best actress. American Senator Gary Hart (Hugh Jackman) has his eyes on the White House as he runs for president in the late 1980s. Look for Hugh Jackman to be nominated for best actor and costar J.K. Simmons as best supporting actor.

He'll certainly be nominated in the best director category, but whether or not three times is a charm for him, we'll just have to wait and see. BlacKkKlansman is currently playing in theaters.

11. Black Panther

We know what you're thinking: Superhero movies never get celebrated during awards season, and now that the Academy has postponed its "popular movie" category, there's no hope for Black Panther to take home a statuette. But the movie was so well-received, it's likely to show up in the best picture category, especially with Hollywood being pushed toward inclusivity this season. Black Panther is currently available on DVD and various streaming platforms.

With two Jurassic World films under her belt, it's safe to say Bryce Dallas Howard knows a thing or two about dinosaurs. She has brought the beloved Jurassic Park franchise back to life with two blockbuster installments — Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom — and a third installment in on its way. With Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom finally available to watch at home (it was released on digital Sept. 4 and Blu-ray Sept. 18), SheKnows wanted to put Howard's newfound knowledge of dinosaurs to the test with a couple of rounds of dino trivia we whipped up — with a few surprise questions about costars Chris Pratt and Jeff Goldblum.

Not surprisingly, Howard’s wits were as sharp as a velociraptor’s claws, and her knowledge was plentiful, ultimately passing our quiz like a total pro. Not only did she correctly answer our question about the sound it is believed dinosaurs once made, but she was actually down to give a preview of that sound — and yes, it's hilarious to watch. Oh, and speaking of hilarious, Howard, without hesitating, revealed what her dinosaur name would be thanks to her instantly recognizable laugh: Laughasaurus.

Basically, this is a trivia session you don't want to miss.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is out now on digital and Blu-ray. After you watch the video, you can check out our full interview with Bryce Dallas Howard here.
