How Nicole Kidman's Role in Destroyer Affected Her Relationship With Keith Urban

Anyone who's seen Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies — or any of her projects over the last 35 years — knows that she pulls inspiration for her characters from a number of sources. But while she admits to being mostly ruled by the heart in a new interview for Marie Claire, she also says that she and her husband, Keith Urban, have a game they like to play when it comes to determining how other artists are inspired in their work.

More: Here's Everything Nicole Kidman Is Working on Right Now (Hint: It’s a Lot)

An example: “When I say to him, ‘What kind of guitarist is that person?’ we do this,” Kidman said, then patted her head, patted her heart and made a motion below her waist, per Marie Claire. “Head, heart, or— It’s a great way to describe different artists, right?"

She admitted that she's a "pretty even mix," but added that she's "probably dominated" by her heart. “If you don’t come from a feeling place, you just end up with an enormous amount of technique," Kidman said. “I have [my head], but that can be overruled. It fluctuates too. I have a strong sexuality. It’s a huge part of who I am and my existence."

That combination has allowed Kidman to sink deeply into the characters she plays — and sometimes, it can really affect her real life. "I get to live my life, but I get to go into other people’s lives too. They’re transient, but I absolutely live those lives," she explained, going on to add that her level of empathy for her characters is so deep that Urban sometimes worries, like he did in her upcoming film Destroyer, in which she plays a detective who has to reckon with bad choices from her past and which has gotten her noticed for the way she has tackled her character: "That was a hell place to exist. I was completely in pain, to the point my husband was like, 'I cannot wait for this to end.'"

Per the expansive Marie Claire interview, we also learned other interesting tidbits about Kidman's inner life and history, including that fact that she traces her feminist ideals back to the 1970s, when her nurse-educator mother would ask her and her sister to hand out political pamphlets advocating women's rights.

“We’d get teased at school: ‘Oh, your mom is so radical,’” Kidman said. “At the time, we’d roll our eyes and be embarrassed. But my sister and I are both advocates now. It was an incredible gift to be given."

These roots have helped grow Kidman into an outspoken feminist today, with examples of that including her work as a Goodwill Ambassador for U.N. Women and working behind the scenes for women's rights. In her acceptance speech for best female actor at the Golden Globes in January, she thanked her Big Little Lies castmates and crew for centering women in their own stories: "I do believe, and I hope, we can elicit change through the stories we tell and the way we tell them. Let's keep the conversation alive. Let's do it."

On Friday, Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, and while the storm was downgraded to a Category 1, it brought with it torrential amounts of rain. In fact, according to The Charlotte Observer, some areas saw as much as 17 inches. The good news is that the storm is finally moving on; most areas of the Carolinas are now rain-free. However, the damage is already done. Florence claimed 17 lives and flooded countless neighborhoods before it left. But victims do not have to go through this alone.

Houseguest Etiquette: The Do’s & Don’t’s When Staying at a Friend’s or Family Member's House

You may know the basic etiquette rules: show up on time, don't put your elbows on the dining table, don't talk with your mouth full, hold the door open for the person behind you (or in front of you, if you see them coming), etc. We may break these rules from time to time, but for the most part, they're still important in this day and age.

There are etiquette rules applicable for nearly every aspect of our lives, from dining out to being a houseguest. And with the holidays quickly approaching, now, more than ever, is a great time to brush up on the latter — because no matter how comfortable you are with your host or hostess, there's no excuse not to be polite.

To get the latest on houseguest etiquette, we spoke to Lizzie Post of The Emily Post Institute and great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post, an American author famous for writing about etiquette. Appropriate, right? If anyone were to know the do's and don'ts of staying at a friend's or family member's house, it's Post.

More: A Guest’s Guide to Wedding Etiquette

Is etiquette really still relevant?

The short answer is yes! Being polite never goes out of style. And Post agrees.

"From an Emily Post perspective, we really believe that etiquette helps us build better relationships with each other," she tells SheKnows. "Manners can help us learn, know and expect what to do and what to expect from others. And the more that we, as a culture, come together and try to have positive interactions, whether it's holding the door for some stranger that you're never going to see again or whether it is two families being joined via marriage, we live a life where you're a connected species and therefore valuing those connections. Making sure that they're positive is imperative to us getting along and being able to be healthy, happy human beings."

Now let's get to the rules...

Rule No. 1: Bring a gift

It's a rule most of us know: Show your appreciation for your host opening their home to you with a gift. But what you may not know is you don't have to bring it to their home upon arrival.

"It doesn't have to be something that you bring with you," Post says. "It might be something that you're inspired to get after the trip, but you do usually want to make sure that that gift is given within a week or two of your visit."

That doesn't mean you can't bring something with you, though. For gift ideas, Post's go-to store is Marshall's, where you can find all kinds of fun, unique home decor items.

"Gifting can be really easy. It can be really, really fun, especially when you can head to a place where there are a lot of surprising finds that can inspire you on your trip," she says. "I know that when I know the person whose house I'm going to go stay at, I love going and thinking about what really works for them and might be there and see that it's like bathroom slippers or it might be something from the kitchen department if you know that you guys are going to be doing a lot of cooking together over the weekend or the vacation, but it's a nice way to get inspired."

Post recommends starting with kitchen items, specialty food items, picture frames, candles and candle sticks — as these are pretty easy, universal items virtually everyone will find useful. But remember: You know your host best. What would they want?

"Think about your friends. Think about the things they like to do. Think about what you know about how they enjoy their home," she says. "If they aren't big foodies or if they really don't cook that much, getting them stuff for the kitchen might not really make any sense. But it might be something like a diffuser or it might be a picture frame or tchotchkes, something for their home."

Now, on to answer the question we know you must be asking yourself at this point: "How much should I spend?"

While there is no minimum or maximum spend amount, don't stretch yourself too thin.

"This is my favorite piece of advice to give — is that you should always shop within your budget," Post tells SheKnows. "It is really, really important that you never feel like you were overextending yourself or purchasing items that you can't. It's really important to stick within that budget."

She continues to say that purchasing something that's way out of your price range could make a big difference on how you're going to feel about the whole weekend.

"That kind of pressure can then make you feel really put out for the rest of the weekend if there are other things you're asked to contribute to," she says.

Rule No. 2: Ask questions

Before you head over for the weekend or for an extended stay, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. Basically, communicate with your host and ask them for their expectations. Do they have fun plans for the both of you? Do they want to keep it pretty relaxed? Talk to them, "because for some trips, sometimes you're staying at someone's house because they're doing you a favor, and other times it's really a trip to spend time with them. So it's important to make sure that you know the difference between what trip you're on and to actually ask your host, 'Hey, I just wanted to check in. What are some of the things that we're planning on doing?' Or maybe it's more along the lines of 'What's your schedule while I'm visiting just so that I know how to operate and how I can set myself up during the trip?' Those kinds of things," Post recommends.

In short: Get the conversation rolling.

Rule No. 3: Keep it tidy

"Make sure you are aware of the space that you get to be in," Post says, and keep the area clean.

For instance, if your bedroom is the pullout couch in the living room, make sure the living room is clean and how you found it upon arrival.

Same goes for the rest of the house.

"Keep track of your belongings. Make sure you aren't leaving a mess in the bathroom or in the kitchen," she says.

Just because you're the guest doesn't mean you can do anything you want. You still need to do your part.

"There definitely is a good, strong rumor out there that guests should be catered to 100 percent, and I would say it should definitely be nixed," Post says. "A host should not feel like they have to cater to every single whim that a guest has."

Rule No. 4: Ask first

Don't just assume you have free reign of everything in the house just because you're the guest. Want a snack? Ask if they have anything you can munch on. Need Wi-Fi? It's perfectly appropriate to ask for the house Wi-Fi according to Post. She says you should always ask before you use anything you haven't been invited to use.

"If you're the host, it's really nice to add on, 'Please feel free to help yourself to anything in the kitchen' or whatever it is that makes sense for the situation."

Rule No. 5: Build in some downtime

If you've ever been a host, you've likely felt it before: that feeling like you need entertain your guest 24-7. And the same goes for the guest, feeling like you need to be with your host all the time. But according to Post, building in some downtime is absolutely encouraged.

"It's OK to say things like, 'I think I'm going to take a nap this afternoon for about an hour or so,' or 'I'm going to go read by the garden for a little bit.' It's OK for either the host or the guest to say or do those kinds of things," she assures.

Rule No. 6: Chip in

"Guests often make the mistake of not offering to chip in on anything," Post tells SheKnows. "A lot of hosts feel so much pressure to provide everything for you, and it's really nice to offer."

For instance, if your host is heading to the grocery store while you're there, tell them you're more than happy to contribute. If they don't say anything, just offer it. And don't worry if you feel like you're interfering with their routine — it's enough for the host to know you're recognizing just how much he or she is doing.

"It's good to get involved or a little bit curious. Saying things like, 'Oh, my gosh, he's just gotten the most amazing food for us all week long. Is there some way I can contribute?' Or, 'I'd love to do something in return!' Even just hearing that really makes the host feel like, a) they're doing a great job, and b) that that job is so appreciated that someone was willing to offer to make it even easier. That's a good relationship-building moment there."

Another gesture Post recommends is taking your hosts out for dinner.

"Those are all just nice gestures that show that you're aware of the impact you're having on someone's day-to-day, and I think that's really important," she adds.

Rule No. 7: If you have a pet, bring everything it'll need

If you've received permission to bring your pet to your host's home, make sure you pack every single item your dog might need. Even if your host also has a pet, it should not be assumed that you can use their pet's food and water dishes or toys.

"Obviously, you need to make sure that you bring all the foods, the toys, everything — even if the people you're going to [visit] have their own pet. It's not appropriate to lean on all of their pet items to then be shared with your pet. Dogs get territorial over their food dishes," Post says.

"You want to show up prepared."

Rule No. 8: Send a handwritten thank-you note

It may seem like an antiquated tradition, but it's still so, so important — especially to Post.

If you bring notes with you, leave it in the guest room or leave it with a gift before you leave. You can also send it to them via snail mail within a week or two after the visit.

"I love that tradition of the handwritten thank-you note," she tells SheKnows. "It means so much when it shows up in your mailbox and that someone actually took the time to sit down and hand-write it and then go mail it."

Of course, you can send a text message, an email or make a phone call too. "They aren't worthless by any means, but that handwritten thank-you note, it really, really does make a wonderful impact. It's a nice way to express your gratitude."

You've Been Pronouncing Chrissy Teigen's Name Wrong This Whole Time

No, you didn't misread that headline. We've all been mispronouncing Chrissy Teigen's surname wrong for years according to Teigen (and her mom) who responded to a fan tweet on Sunday alleging this not-so-conspiracy theory. Here's what went down.

More: Chrissy Teigen Finds a Way to Roast John Legend on Their Wedding Anniversary

It started when someone tweeted a video from Australian breakfast radio show, The Kyle & Jackie O Show, wherein they talked about how Ariana Grande's last name is actually pronounced "Grand-ee", not "Grahnd-ay," though Grande has never corrected anyone about it (but did casually comment on it in August). Someone quote-tweeted that and wrote, "You know how innocent you have to be to allow a world to pronounce yo last name wrong yo whole life and just go along with it?"

Then a Teigen fan added, "Well we pronounce @chrissyteigen's name wrong all the time." Getting tagged into the conversation made Teigen herself respond, and she blew our minds with this revelation.

As reported by Entertainment Tonight, Teigen tweeted, "Word! gave up a long time ago. Last name is tie-gen not tee-gen." Say what? When one fan pointed out that even Teigen pronounces her last name with a long "e" sound, she she said, "I know. I even correct people when they say it correctly. It’s all v effed up."

"I don’t correct people, ever," she added in another tweet. "They can call me Janet and I won’t. Wrong order? I’ll eat it. Taxi going to the wrong airport? I’ll change my flight." Then, apparently overwhelmed with the replies in her notifications, Teigen added, "I don't correct people but I do I don't know im [sic] so tired please let me go."

In order to properly put a rest to the topic, Teigen recorded a video of herself — and her mom — confirming that her name is pronounced Tie-gen, not Tee-gen.

"I'm tired of living this lie," Teigen said in the vid. "It's Tie-gen." Then she yelled, "Isn't it, Mom?" and aimed the camera into another room. Off-camera, her mom shouts, "Yep!" When Teigen brings the camera back to herself, she says, "Told you. It's Tie-gen." She seems pretty amused by the whole thing.

We learned two things in the last few weeks: how to pronounce Teigen's name and how to pronounce Grande's. Now the question is: How many celebrities' names are we mispronouncing on a regular basis? The number is probably overwhelming.

Eva Mendes Finally Dishes on Her 2 Daughters

Come on, admit it: You've wondered at least once what it's like to be Eva Mendes — actor, designer and mother of two with her partner, actor Ryan Gosling. News from Mendes' world has been in short supply, as both she and Gosling tend to be tight-lipped about their private lives. But the very private Mendes made an exception when she spoke with E! News about her daughters with Ryan Gosling — Amada, 2, and Esmeralda, 4 — at the Eva Mendes collection show for New York & Company.

MoreEva Mendes Lets Her Kids Wear Whatever They Want

The show took place at the Palace Theater in Los Angeles, and Mendes was surprisingly generous with her comments about her family, marriage and career.

"I'm just so obsessed with my kids that I don't want to leave them," Mendes told E! News when asked if returning to acting was in her future. "They're just still so little."

"I don't feel like I have it balanced at all. I kind of have been figuring it out as I'm going along, and it's just important to have a support system," she said in the interview. "I have my family. I have Ryan's family, and that's just, like, invaluable to have family around supporting you."

MoreLaura Prepon & Eva Mendes Are Working Mom Goals

Mendes has been designing for New York & Company for five years. She looked fab as ever, but she insisted her kids have yet to show any interest in couture fashion. "They live in jammies, you know. They're still in diapers — well, one of them's still in diapers, so they're just being babies, as they should be." In fact, in March, Mendes told E!, "Thank God there's no fashion talk. But I let them wear whatever they want," she said.

Mendes even shared news of Esmeralda's birthday, saying it was full of "cake, candles and gifts... typical family stuff." She added, "It was beautiful. They're just so beautiful."

We're not sure what made Mendes so unusually chatty about her lovely family, but we're glad for the peek into her behind-the-scenes life.

Turns Out Air Pollution Can Even Reach... Your Placenta?!

Most pregnant people will do anything they can to ensure their unborn child's health, right? They exercise, they avoid hot dogs and sushi, they take vitamins, and they replace margaritas with matcha (in moderation). But one thing expectant parents have little control over? The air they breathe. And — you guessed it — this may be cause for concern according to a new study.

More: Gestational Diabetes May Increase Risk of Postpartum Depression

In fact, researchers for the European Lung Foundation, which conducted the study, found that air pollution has the ability to pass through a pregnant person's lungs and into the placenta.

Of course, according to Dr. Lisa Miyashita, one of the study's authors, the effects of air pollution on fetal development have been known for some time. "We've known for a while that air pollution affects [fetal] development and can continue to affect babies after birth and throughout their lives." However, what Miyashita and fellow researcher Dr. Norrice Liu wanted to find out was "if these effects could be due to pollution particles moving from the mother's lungs to the placenta."

"Until now, there has been very little evidence that inhaled particles get into the blood from the lung," Miyashita said in a statement.

But this study changed all that. In fact, it provided evidence that inhaled pollution particles can indeed move from the lungs into the placenta.

It's worth noting that the study was very small in scale. Researchers worked with only five healthy pregnant women, all from London. After delivery, researchers analyzed the placentas of these women and, using an optical microscope, they found 72 dark particles among 3,500 cells, which researchers determined to be carbon particles.

Of course, that may not sound like much — 72 in 3,500 — however, these particles should not be present in the placenta at all. At all. And according to the researchers, the presence of these particles proves environmental contaminants can absolutely affect a mothers' pregnancy.

"It is very evident to us they are black sooty particles," explained Miyashita.

That said, it is still unclear whether these particles can then pass from the placenta to the fetus. "We do not know whether the particles we found could also move across into the [fetus], but our evidence suggests that this is indeed possible. We also know that the particles do not need to get into the baby's body to have an adverse effect, because if they have an effect on the placenta, this will have a direct impact" on the fetus.

So how can we deal with this? Professor Mina Gaga, president of the European Respiratory Society and medical director and head of the respiratory department of Athens Chest Hospital in Greece, advises implementing stricter policies — now. "We need stricter policies for cleaner air to reduce the impact of pollution on health worldwide because we are already seeing a new population of young adults with health issues."

Kristen Bell Uses This Eleanor Roosevelt Quote to Overcome Feeling Inferior

Imposter syndrome and an inferiority complex plague everyone at times — even celebrities. Some of them, like Kristen Bell, have found a means of dealing with it through the inspirational words of women who came before them. We can definitely relate to her feelings of inferiority, but we're also inspired by how she puts those feelings aside in order to be confident in herself and her work.

More: Kristen Bell's Self-Proclaimed Shortcomings Are So Relatable

At the Women Making History Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, Bell was one of several honorees alongside Gabrielle Union, Kathy Bates, and activist Patrisse Cullors according to Elle magazine

During the event, Bell said, "I walk into every room feeling inferior." That may sound surprising given that Bell is one of the stars of The Good Place and since she's got a long list of accomplishments under her belt, including several awards and nominations throughout the course of her career.

But Bell went on to say that some of this inferiority comes from her size (she's 5 feet, 1 inch tall), which might lead people to underestimate her. However, she said that when she feels inferior, she turns to the words of former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who once said, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

“Think about that for a second," Bell said. "No one can make you feel inferior unless you consent. I read that ten years ago, and I think about it every single day.” To overcome her own feelings of inferiority, Bell said, “I just stopped consenting.” Since she first read the quote, she said, “I at least try" to feel capable.

Bell also said that she's raising her daughters with powerful female role models, including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (they have finger puppets of the Supreme Court judge) and her sister-in-law, who Bell said was "like a third parent." It's great for someone like Bell, who's seemingly on top of the world and totally confident, admit to her insecurities but also offer advice on how to overcome them while paying her dues to women who carved their own paths ahead of her.

Are the Kardashian 'Triplets' Poised to Take Over the World?

$

No, they're not literal Kardashian triplets. Calm down, all of you.

Stormi, Chicago and True are first cousins, not sisters — but their being born so close together has the world referring to them as the "triplets" of the Kardashian-Jenner family tree. We're asking all the pertinent questions, like: Was this planned? Are these adorable creatures poised to take over the Kardashian-Jenner empire someday — and, uh, the world?

Meet your future style-makers and possible world leaders, Chicago, True and Stormi (left to right).

Kim Kardashian West posted this stop-your-heart-it's-so-pink pic of the three newest Kardashian-Jenners with the caption "The Triplets." In case you were floating around in outer space or kept in a locked trunk in the attic, you probably know who's who, but here's a brief rundown. First on the scene was Chicago (daughter of Kanye "Imma let you talk" West and Kim Kardashian West), born in January. Stormi, Kylie Jenner's daughter with Travis Scott, arrived shrouded in secrecy in February. And the youngest of the bunch, True Thompson, was born in April to Khloé Kardashian just as she was finding out her baby daddy (Tristan Thompson) had been unfaithful during her pregnancy. Yikes.

MoreKhloé Kardashian Shamed for Leaving True With...True's Dad

The three first cousins are so freaking cute, we want to munch on their arm rolls. Wait, what? I meant we want to look at them from a safe distance and keep our hands to ourselves and not freak anyone out, duh.

So, who are these babies, and who are they likely to turn out to be? Our hard-hitting news coverage takes a closer look at these wee heirs to the Kardashian-Jenner empire and, you know, maybe the United States too since we're now apparently a reality TV show.

The most recent arrival, True, takes after mama Khloé Kardashian with her love of crazy faces and chic black jumpsuits. We're betting she'll be the comic relief — and the deal closer with a little bodyguard vibe thrown in. If she's inherited an ounce of her mom's do-not-mess protectiveness, yeah, you're going to want True on your side. Check out this nugget.

Kardashian recently asked sister Kardashian West to be True's godmother, possibly pissing off Kourtney Kardashian, but hey, Kourt, you didn't pop out a pseudo-triplet, now did you? Khloé said on a recent episode of the family's show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, “I feel like Kim has been so selfless during my pregnancy. She’s trying to just help make sure that you feel your best, look your best, have the best. She’s so secure in her life that I feel like she would be an incredible godparent. She’s just been a great friend and sister.”

MoreThings Between Kim Kardashian West & Tristan Thompson Are Worse Than We Knew

Stormi is likely to be the richest of the faux triplets if she should inherit her almost-billionaire mama Kylie Jenner's cosmetics empire. We're guessing she'll be the one to declare a moratorium on work and fly everyone off to Turks and Caicos on a whim — with the perfect tropical sunglasses and lip lacquers in gift bags.

And last but not least, we've got Chicago, who's shown here with cousin True. Chicago's the one on the right taking charge, showing real leadership. We guess she'll take after her mom, Kardashian West. There's a serene, maternal quality to Chi, even as she's preparing to call in a bodyguard to adjust True in her baby seat.

We're OK with these three being our future leaders should they decide to take over the universe. As long as we get gift bags too, OK?

Cher Recalls How It Felt When She First Met Her Now Ex-Boyfriend, Tom Cruise

Cher isn't afraid to speak up about her beliefs or experiences, as evidenced by her candor in interviews and on Twitter. But in June, when she was a guest at a live show of James Corden's The Late Late Show in London, she participated in a game that was similar to truth or dare: "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts." Cher and Corden both had the option of eating dried caterpillars, haggis and cow's tongue, among other "delicacies," or answering questions about everything from their love lives to celebrity encounters to career moves. The results were interesting to say the least, and now, she's expanding on some of the previous comments she made about ex-boyfriend Tom Cruise — and the outcome is interesting.

Saturday, in an interview with The Daily Mail, Cher admitted that Corden's first question quoted her on something she doesn't deny saying but also doesn't remember saying. Corden asked, "You said Tom Cruise is one of your top five favorite lovers — who are the other four?" Rather than divulge the answer, Cher opted to eat some freeze-dried caterpillars.

"I could have said it," Cher told The Daily Mail. "God knows I say everything. Although I think I’m much more guarded now because of social media and because everyone has a camera. You can’t get any privacy now."

She did admit that she and Cruise are still friends. "Though I don’t get what he does, that whole Scientology thing. I can’t understand it so I just… don’t."

Cher and Cruise met at Sean Penn and Madonna's wedding in 1985, per The Daily Mail. Then, Cher said, they were both invited to an event at the White House for folks who have dyslexia. "We didn’t go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there," she said.

In the same interview, Cher indulged readers with some information about other previous romances. The Daily Mail reports that she said she's "still sweet" on most of her exes, including deceased ex-husbands Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman. On former boyfriend Val Kilmer, who costarred with Cruise in Top Gun, Cher said, "[W]hen we kissed I thought my head would shoot right off my body." On David Geffen, she said, "If it wasn't for him I'd have ended up on the street." She called Gene Simmons "the one I'm crazy about" and described Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora as "one of the most underrated singers ever."

Cher also said that her diva personality in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is nothing like her personality in real life. She also promised she won't stop tweeting or fighting for what she believes is right, which makes us as happy as the rest of this incredible interview.

Coca-Cola May Be Working on a New CBD-Infused Beverage

CBD has taken center stage in recent years. In fact, the naturally occurring component of cannabis is legal in 46 states — though guidelines and regulations vary. And while CBD can be found in numerous products, from oils and chocolates to coffee, candy and even shampoo, one product it hasn't made its way into is the American soft drink. At least not yet. However, according to a new report by BNN Bloomberg, that may soon change: Coca-Cola is looking to add CBD into their drinks.

According to the report, the Coca-Cola company is in “serious talks” with Aurora Cannabis — a Canadian-based cannabis producer — to develop cannabis-infused beverages, "a groundbreaking move that would signal a significant foray into the marijuana sector by one of the world’s most iconic consumer brands," sources told BNN Bloomberg. And while Coca-Cola and cannabis may seem like a natural match, sources told BNN Bloomberg that the beverage would likely be something entirely new.

“It’s going to be more of the ‘recovery drink’ category,” the source said.

Of course, Coca-Cola hasn't commented on the talks with Aurora directly. However, Kent Landers, a spokesperson for the company, said that they are "closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world [as] the space is evolving quickly."

Landers also noted that "no decisions have been made at this time."

That said, while Aurora Cannabis is a legal producer of CBD in Canada, as mentioned, the legality of CBD in America is far less straightforward, which means that even if Coca-Cola develops a CBD product, it may or may not be available in the States.

Victoria Beckham Briefly Transformed Back Into Posh Spice During London Fashion Week

Will any of us ever forget the words to "Spice Up Your Life"? This seminal smash hit from the Spice Girls has been a karaoke favorite for more than 20 years. At London Fashion Week on Sunday, Victoria Beckham (formerly known as Posh Spice) reminded people exactly why this song is such a jam — and why we'll forever approve of her reliving her Spice Girls glory days  — while participating in a celebratory karaoke session during London Fashion Week.

In a video posted on Beckham's Instagram early Monday, she can be seen lip-synching the pre-chorus and part of the chorus from "Spice Up Your Life" while she performs the iconic dance routine from the music video, all while standing on a couch. If you had any doubts about Beckham being able to channel all that big Spice Girls energy... well, think again.

Beckham captioned the video, "Disclaimer: high heels on the sofa at @marksclubmayfair. #startsomethingpriceless @mastercarduk x VB #VBSince08."

The nostalgic, seemingly impromptu performance took place at a party in Beckham's honor, continuing the celebration of the 10-year anniversary of her namesake fashion label, Victoria Beckham, after a show earlier in the day. People reports that this was the first time Beckham held her show in London rather than in New York City during New York Fashion Week, as she's done in the past.

Throughout the weekend, Beckham shared photos from London Fashion Week, including shots with hubby David Beckham and British Vogue editor Edward Enninful (the couple is on the magazine's October issue along with their children), her parents and her clients. She is clearly excited about this anniversary show, as she should be — 10 years of success in the fashion industry is a major accomplishment.

"So grateful for the past 10 years," she wrote in the caption of a photo of herself, descending a grand staircase. "Thank u #TeamVB x VB Kisses #VBSS19 #LFW #VBSince08."

Per People, Beckham was all smiles as she thanked the audience at her show on Sunday. Her husband and family were there to support her in this major career moment, and we love that her hard work keeps paying off — and that she shared such a fun moment from Sunday's party with her followers.

Why It's Important to Let Your Kid Fail

Standardized tests; extracurriculars; instilling a can-do, stick-with-it attitude — much of parenting trends' focus in recent years has been on raising kids with drive and ambition: kids who will succeed. But the truth is that failure is inevitable along the road to success.

Are we giving our children the wrong message when we tell them to never give up — but also never let them fail?

More: My Daughter's Decision to Attend Boarding School Breaks My Heart, but I'm Here for It

What are the benefits of failure?

Failure teaches lessons. If parents swooped in every time a baby learning how to walk fell, we’d all be carrying around 10-year-olds. But concepts that were easy to grasp with young children are a lot harder when grades, sports and friendships are on the line. Sometimes, you might need to remind yourself — and your kids — of the benefits of failure.

Children who internalize the idea that failure is unacceptable are often vulnerable to anxiety, fear change and are reluctant to try new things. They lack resiliency, or the ability to bounce back from life’s disappointments, which is a crucial life skill. Letting your child fail when they’re young (and the consequences aren’t as dire or dramatic) builds that internal strength as well as their ability to handle disappointment.

It also builds your child’s self-confidence when you demonstrate your belief in their abilities — and your certainty that eventually, they’ll get that task they’ve tried 10 times. Constantly intervening sends the message that you don’t trust your child to manage their own fate — which might inspire them to stop trying to overcome new challenges altogether. Believe it or not, failing and then recovering from it teaches children that failure isn’t life-ending. Rather, it's just one step along the way.

So, if you’re ready to let your kid fail, how do you do it?

How to let your child fail

You’ve nagged, pleaded and threatened, and your son still hasn’t studied for his geography test. It might be time to let him get that C. Very few failures in life are life-ruining, and at some point, your child will have to learn how to self-motivate. However, that’s if the task truly is something your child has the skills to accomplish.

It’s unfair to present kids with challenges that aren’t developmentally appropriate. Dr. Michael D. Thompson, a clinical psychologist and author of nine books on child development, tells SheKnows, "What gives you an enormous amount of shame and inadequacy is being presented with developmentally inappropriate challenges.” Feelings of shame can cause a lot of damage to children, leading to a deep reluctance to try something again. When you let your child fail, avoid shaming them.

Stay present with your child, and don’t abandon them to whatever it is that they’re struggling with. Demonstrate a new chore, and praise their attempts to get it right. You can also talk them through what changes they could make next time to do better — like starting to study for that test a week earlier.

Reframe failure

We all fell down the first time we tried walking. Clinical psychologist Dr. Jamie Howard tells SheKnows, “Failing can be reframed as trying, practicing and putting in effort.” When choosing your words to describe what happened, emphasize concepts of trying and learning rather than failure. Don’t be afraid to point out if they didn’t put in any effort and how that might have led to the poor result.

It’s worth waiting to see if your child even views the incident as a failure. Thompson says, “Kids are more resilient than parents believe; they’re more likely to pick themselves up and dust themselves off and start all over again.” In the time it took for you to jump up from the park bench and run over, they’ve moved on.

More: Can Kids Benefit From Instability?

What to say when they fail

Avoid saying anything caustic, mean or overly critical. Don’t belittle or put your child down, but do relate to them. Tell a story of a time that you failed — didn’t get the part in the school play, failed to block a shot during a hockey game — and model for them how you handled it.

Validate and acknowledge their emotions by saying things like, “I’m sorry you’re so upset,” or “That was a tough loss,” but also remind them that they’ll get more chances to succeed. There will be another geography test or soccer game.

Failure doesn’t just test our kids' emotional maturity; our response tests a parent’s maturity. But just like our kids, we can handle it.

Days of Our Lives Has Big Plans for Deidre Hall's New Marlena Storyline

Played by beloved soap star Deidre Hall for the better part of four decades, Days of our Lives' Marlena Evans has endured many ups and downs, including but not limited to: getting married more than once, being pregnant, being possessed, being mind-controlled and "killed" (only to later be magically resurrected). However, on the Aug. 27 episode of Days, Marlena was shot by her daughter Sami Brady (played by Alison Sweeney) and has been in a coma for nearly a month. While Marlena woke up from her coma during Monday's installment, it looks like Days is going to be taking this character in a new direction.

More: Is John Stamos Planning His Return to General Hospital?

Well, sort of.

You see, things are very different for Marlena now that she has awoken. In fact, according to Soap Dirt, Marlena is now waking up as Hattie Adams, a woman who bears a strong resemblance to Marlena... but isn't Marlena. Confused? OK, let's back it up a bit.

A quick catch-up: When Marlena woke up, her family was thrilled to see her — and understandably so. She had been taken off life support, and they thought she was gone for good. But when Sami cried and told her mother “You’re going to be OK,” Marlena immediately snapped back, “No thanks to you... get her out of here before she finishes me off.”

Of course, no one could understand the sudden personality shift — which she also directed at her other daughter, Belle Black (played by Martha Madison) — at least no one except husband John Black (played by Drake Hogestyn) and Kayla Brady Johnson (played by Mary Beth Evans). Why?

Well, because John and Kayla concocted a plan to keep Marlena alive — and on life support — as long as possible. According to Soap Dirt, John and Kayla moved Marlena to a hospital room on an abandoned floor. Since no one is ever down there, they knew they'd be able to keep her on the ventilator and hope that she wakes up in due time. But in order to make this ruse completely convincing, they needed someone to be her "body double." Enter Hattie Adams, Marlena's doppelgänger, who used this opportunity as a chance to get out of prison.

Of course, that means Marlena isn't really Marlena — which stinks — but it also means that the real Marlena is still alive, and that is good news for all Days of Our Lives fans.

Our Favorite Kitchens From Around the World

Whether you enjoy pulling inspiration for your own globally inspired space or simply like indulging in a bit of voyeurism, there’s something about comparing styles from around the world that feels like an insight into the cultures themselves. Every country has its unique characteristics, color palettes and staple fabrics — some hailing from traditional crafting techniques, others a result of the landscape and climate — that consistently make appearances in the regions’ interior design.

That said, it’s not fair (or journalistically accurate) to relegate an entire geographical area full of diverse people and differing design preferences to one specific aesthetic. Just look at California — as equally known for its breezy, whitewashed bohemian styles as it is for its cool, urban contemporary spaces. So instead, we pulled together an array of various spaces from different countries worldwide; specifically, kitchens from around the world.

The heart of the home and one of the most-frequented rooms in any house or apartment, the kitchen is one place we find ourselves most drawn to for sourcing design inspiration. If you’re the same, here’s all the global kitchen inspo you’ll ever need. Read on and find the style that most appeals to you.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Tel Aviv, Israel

Despite being located in an über-historic part of the world, Tel Aviv is also incredibly vibrant and contemporary. This kitchen, located in a 1,300-square-foot condo, reflects that. Between the cool fuchsia pink-bulb pendants (one of our favorite trending statement light ideas) and the cobalt blue cabinets (inspired by Frida Kahlo), the lively space is anything but boring. We especially love the more modern elements juxtaposed with some older accent pieces, like the clay pots and vases on display.

Valle de Bravo, Mexico

The very definition of warm, natural design, this wooden kitchen takes monochrome to the next level — even the beautiful dinnerware, visible thanks to open shelving, is washed in a similar earthy caramel color. The natural materials used in this home are directly influenced by the fact that it’s situated in the middle of a forest; the architects pulled brick and wood from the home’s surroundings to build a home that’s truly one with the region.

Calgary, Canada

Calgary, Canada

Sometimes, awkwardly shaped rooms don’t have to be bad news: Take note of this tiny home in Calgary to see just how to hack your small space. Skylights inserted into the slanted ceiling bring in extra light that in turn opens up the kitchen even more. Recessed shelving is a clever solution to a lack of cabinet and surface space. The home itself is a historical one, with the designers working to infuse modern smart-design solutions (like the kitchen!) while also preserving the feel of the original space.

Puglia, Italy

Love quintessential Mediterranean style? Nowhere is it more evident than in the south of Italy in the region of Puglia. The “heel of Italy’s boot” is sunny, seaside and heavily features materials like terra-cotta tiles or clay. As such, you’ll find spacious kitchens — the only thing better than Italian design is Italian food, obviously — full of rustic materials and naturally derived colors. The stone sink is a unique touch that pulls everything all together.

Shanghai, China

Shanghai, China

This minimalist Shanghai home is a design feat as a whole (seriously, you need to see what it looked like before), but of special note is the kitchen. Neatly tucked away in a nook under the stairs, there’s nothing superfluous; yet it somehow manages to make utilitarian look stylish. This is due to the clean wooden cabinetry and strict adherence to a minimalist aesthetic. It ensures that what little color is present — the raspberry-red paper towel dispenser, the blue staircase — doesn’t overwhelm the tiny space.

Neffiès, France

Everything you love about rustic French country design in one space. This kitchen belongs to a B&B in the south of France named La Belle Vue. We love the idea of scouring an antique market for a one-of-a-kind farmhouse table to replace a standard kitchen island; and for wall decor, why not marry function with fashion and hang up your favorite copper pots and pans? A smattering of pendant lights finish off this dreamy kitchen, which we think is reason enough to book a holiday.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, Spain

Anyone who’s ever been to Barcelona probably fell in love with the colorful, lively city within an hour of landing. This blue-tinted kitchen exhibits the best of the city’s style: It’s playful, a tiny bit edgy and completely unpretentious. Slate-black cabinet fronts balance out the punchier pops of color and pattern, grounding the kitchen in a bit of simplicity.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali is a must-see for every kind of traveler, and if you go, you should definitely stay at The Island Houses (or at least add the rooms to your Pinterest travel board). The Pandan House features this gorgeous pink kitchen, which we love for all the little finishing touches that pay homage to the boutique hotel’s region. One design idea we’re stealing? Mixing and matching pendant lights; the eclectic yet collected is so much more interesting than a lineup of uniform brass fixtures.

Bath, England

Bath, England

Designer Claire Rendall’s country home in Bath is a mix of comfort and sophistication, and her kitchen is everything we love about British design. The timeless elegance feels fresh, with cool, contemporary additions like acrylic dining chairs — more juxtaposition takes place when you consider the old Indian timber pillars against the white glass tabletop. And the ultimate British design piece may just be the fruit bowl — it belonged to David Bowie.

Gotland, Sweden

This mini-kitchen, situated underneath a lofted bedroom, is Scandi simplicity at its finest. If you live in cramped quarters with a lofted bedroom, take a note from the Swedes and invest some time in turning your home into a warm-but-minimalist retreat to take full advantage of what square footage you do have. Uniformly white appliances and cabinets allow the wooden accents to really pop. When your floors are a cool concrete, a little throw rug is all that’s needed to finish off the room.

Victoria, Australia

Victoria, Australia

We’re having a bit of an Australian "it" girl obsession at the moment, and when kitchens like this exist in that country, it’s easy to see why. The Pinterest-perfect space is cool and effortless at the same time. Opting for multicolored stools in lieu of more streamlined formal chairs is one way to bring in casual elegance. Open shelving that displays an eclectic collection of glassware, dinnerware and even books is another. But our favorite unexpected twist has to be the concrete backsplash — it’s a refreshing change from the classic subway tile.

Kassel, Germany

Comprised of simple yet stylish little vignettes, this colorful kitchen is a pastel-filled dream. With ample space in which to display both functional kitchenware and decorative trinkets, it’s the perfect place to spend a morning enjoying coffee or an afternoon baking some delicious German confections. It’s worth noting the dedication to a color scheme: Even the slightly retro tile backsplash matches the hues exhibited in the decor.

Portland, Maine

Portland, Maine

As for the example of an American kitchen, this one ticks all the boxes: Navy blue cabinets? Check. Subway tiling? Check. Brassy light fixtures? Check. Open shelving? Check. It’s the perfect pictorial illustration of all our favorite and most-reported-on kitchen trends — and with all the natural light and ample space, you’d never guess this room used to be a closet.

South Ostrobothnia, Finland

Here’s a Nordic country we should be paying more attention to in terms of lustworthy interiors: Finland, the home of design house Marimekko and famous architect Alvar Aalto to name-drop a couple of noteworthy reasons. And with kitchens like this, it seems there’s much Scandinavian minimalist inspiration to be found within the country. A clean, whitewashed backdrop allows for every single colorful, interesting kitchen tool to pop, be it the pink mugs on display in the shelves or the matte black faucet.

Asilah, Morocco

Asilah, Morocco

Situated in the historical Medina of Asilah in Morocco, this rustic-looking kitchen may not be what you first think of when you think of stereotypical Moroccan design — there’s not a loud pattern or super-saturated hue to be seen — but if anything, that’s proof of just how diverse the city is. We’re loving the wooden accents (they even make a dish-drying rack look chic) and the fabric covers in place of regular cabinet doors. The best part? This kitchen is actually part of an equally gorgeous home currently available to rent via Airbnb. It may just be time to book your next vacation.

The Cast of This Is Us Drops Major Hints About Season 3 at the Emmys

NBC’s tear-jerking drama This Is Us could take home three golden statues at Monday's 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, so it’s no wonder the cast hit the red carpet in full force. And while, yes, they all looked beautiful and we want them to win their respective categories, we're probably not alone in saying we mainly tuned in to the red carpet coverage to see if the show's stars would leak a spoiler or two about the upcoming (and highly anticipated) third season.

More: A Special This Is Us Episode Is Airing Before Season 3, So Mark Your Calendars

Luckily, they delivered, and the timing couldn't be more perfect: Although the season three premiere is just a week away, waiting to find out what happens to the beloved Pearson clan feels like it’s taking an eternity. So, until This Is Us officially gets rolling again on Sept. 25, these teasers shared by the cast on the red carpet will have to tide us over.

Hint 1: There’s trouble in paradise for Randall and Beth

Sterling K. Brown, who’ll square off against costar Milo Ventimiglia for outstanding lead actor, confirmed what many fans already feared: trouble ahead for our favorite couple. “There’s some tension between Randall and Beth,” Brown revealed before clarifying that they were not breaking up (whew!). “This couple’s not going anywhere, but just like in life, you have your highs and your lows... we’re gonna go through some of the worst, so we can get to the better.”

Hint 2: Randall might be headed back to work

In addition to diving into Randall and Beth’s relationship, This Is Us will also devote time to how Deja finds her place in the family, Brown said. As if that wasn’t enough for anxiety-prone Randall to juggle, Brown hinted that his character could be heading back to work, too. “There’s a possible new career opportunity that is on the horizon,” he said.

Hint 3: And baby makes three?

Last season proved to be a total roller coaster for Kate and Toby, who — spoiler alert! — struggled to come to terms with Kate’s miscarriage but also got married. However, it was during those finale nuptials when fans saw a flash-forward that showed a seemingly ominous future for the couple. As Toby lay in bed, Kate told him the doctors wanted to check his medications again.

So, is Toby’s depression back? What does this mean for them? Judging by Chrissy Metz’s comments, that glimpse doesn’t mean it’s all bad news. When asked if they might try for another baby, Metz hinted, “That might be a possibility. I just know that there’s going to be some good news for Kate and Toby, even though it will be difficult getting there. It’s going to be good. People are going to be happy.”

Hint 4: We won’t ugly cry (as much as last time, anyway)

OK, so we all know that there’s no realm of existence in which This Is Us will be a tear-free viewing experience. But according to Mandy Moore, who plays Pearson family matriarch Rebecca, this season will be decidedly more upbeat. “It’s exciting,” she said. “I feel like this season, selfishly from my perspective, has a little more light and levity.” Hey, we don’t hate that idea! Moore also noted that the series would have fun exploring Jack and Rebecca’s courtship during the '70s.

More: Our First Look at Jack Pearson in Vietnam on This Is Us Is Here

Hint 5: There’s a juxtaposition in Jack’s story

Ah, finally, Papa Pearson. While we all understand and (begrudgingly) accept that Jack died, fans look forward to every second he makes an appearance in a flashback. So, naturally, we hung on every word as Milo Ventimiglia gave a glimpse into what’s in store for this treasured TV dad. “We go back to a younger Jack, in wartime, in the Vietnam War, [but we also] see budding love between Jack and Rebecca," he said. "We get to know more about the Pearsons and the family dynamic.”

Emmy Awards' Opening Bit Pokes Fun at Hollywood's Diversity Problem

When the Oscar nominations were read in January 2015 and not one person of color was nominated in any of the lead or supporting actor categories, it became clear to more and more people that Hollywood would have to answer for its lack of diversity. But how far has the industry really come since #OscarsSoWhite? During the opening number at the 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Saturday Night Live stars (and Emmy nominees) Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson had an announcement: Hollywood has solved its diversity problem.

More: All the Best-Dressed Celebs at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards

"We're celebrating the fact that this year's Emmy awards has the most diverse group of nominees in Emmy history," Thompson said onstage. "I'm gonna go ahead and say it: We solved it," he continued, referencing Hollywood's diversity problem. McKinnon and Thompson then broke into a song poking fun at how far Hollywood still has to go to truly achieve diversity.

The two were joined by a star-studded cast of celebrities that included Kristen Bell, Andy Samberg, John Legend, Sterling K. Brown, RuPaul and even a guest appearance from Ricky Martin. The satirical skit didn't stop with poking fun at Hollywood's lack of cultural diversity, either — the cast took jabs at Hollywood's problems with sexual assault, too. But the musical number was met with mixed reactions from viewers online.

While some were critical of the cold open, others thought it was spot-on.

Chrissy Teigen Claps Back After Being Asked If She’s Pregnant at the 2018 Emmys

Chrissy Teigen might be at the Emmys tonight, but she’s never off-duty as Twitter’s clapback queen. The model killed it on the red carpet at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday night, but not everyone was pleased with how she looked.

More: You've Been Pronouncing Chrissy Teigen's Name Wrong This Whole Time

After she walked the red carpet with her husband, John Legend, Teigen was asked by a Twitter user if she was pregnant. Spoiler: She’s not. The Lip Sync Battle cohost gave birth to her second child, a son named Miles Theodore, in May — as she had to remind body-shamers who still thought she was pregnant.

“I’m asking this with the utmost respectful, but is @chrissyteigen pregnant again?” the user asked. “I just had a baby but thank you for being soooo respectful,” Teigen clapped back.

Teigen also received criticism for her appearance at the Emmys, with many believing that her role as a presenter was unnecessary and only happened because she’s married to Legend. “Chrissy Teigen is beautiful but does she have to be included in everything just because she’s married to John Legend? #emmys,” one user tweeted. “breathe, chrissy,” Teigen responded. She added in another tweet, “man. you guys are brutal.”

Surprise Marriage Proposal Steals the Show at the 2018 Emmy Awards

That’s it — everyone else can just go home, because Glenn Weiss just won the entire Primetime Emmys. To be clear, the director did win an actual Emmy for outstanding directing for a variety special for his work on The Oscars telecast. But he completely stole the show tonight when he used his acceptance speech as an opportunity to propose to his girlfriend.

More: The Cast of This Is Us Drops Major Hints About Season 3 at the Emmys

Weiss’ speech proved poignant from the start, although no one could have guessed what was to come. “I’m really grateful to be here, but it’s bittersweet,” he said. “The person most proud of this moment would be my mom, and she passed away just two weeks ago. Part of my heart is broken. I don’t think it will ever be repaired. But, she’s in me.”

Many viewers were already moved by his words. But the jaw-drop heard 'round the world occurred a moment later, as Weiss continued: “Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things, and she adored my girlfriend, Jan,” Weiss said — now appearing to speak directly to his partner, Jan Svendsen, who was seated in the audience.

“Jan, you are the sunshine in my life. And Mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”

He then pulled out the ring “that my dad put on my mom’s finger 65 to 67 years ago,” saying, “Jan, I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger, in front of all these people, and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?”

A tearful Svendsen then joined Weiss on stage, where he dropped to one knee and presented her with an engagement ring. Unsurprisingly, she accepted. It marks the first live marriage proposal in the 70-year history of the show.

Weiss, who took home his fourth Emmy Award tonight, will undoubtedly look back on 2018 as the year he truly won big. Guess that just leaves one question: what was his backup plan if he'd lost in his category tonight?!

Sandra Oh Losing at the 2018 Emmys Has People Responding With Anger

History could've been made in a major way at the 2018 Emmys, but that definitely didn't happen. Sandra Oh lost to Claire Foy in the lead actress in a drama series category, and people are angry.

More: Ellen Pompeo Has a Lot to Say About Sandra Oh's Emmy Nomination

By receiving a nomination for her role in Killing Eve, Oh became the first Asian woman to be nominated for a lead actress Emmy ever. Her nomination was something the Emmys, of course, highlighted. After being recognized onstage by Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson during the opening performance, Oh responded in the audience, "It's an honor... just to be Asian."

Monday night's Emmys focused heavily on diversity and celebrated just how diverse this year's awards were. Regarding the nominees, yes, they were the most diverse in Emmys history, but the same can't be said about the winners. So when it came time for Oh's category and she didn't win, well, those rooting for her were upset even more.

Of course, Claire Foy is an extremely talented actor who did award-winning work as Queen Elizabeth II in season two of Netflix's The Crown, but the same can be said about Oh in Killing Eve. Many have deemed her loss as a missed opportunity and a historical moment that could've impacted the Emmys majorly.

Like Oh told The New York Times in July, "We've got to start somewhere. And I’m happy to get that ball rolling, because what I hope happens is that next year and the next year and the next year, we will have presence. And the presence will grow not only to Asian-Americans, you know, from yellow to brown, but to all our other sisters and brothers... If I can be a part of that change, like [expletive], yeah, let’s celebrate it."

Even Foy recognized Oh onstage by saying during her acceptance speech, "This wasn't supposed to happen. Sandra Oh, I just love ya."

A lot of people love Oh too, and they can't help but express their anger over her loss. Here are just a few of the reactions on Twitter.

More: Surprise Marriage Proposal Steals the Show at the 2018 Emmy Awards

It's definitely disappointing to see Oh walk away from the Emmys without a gold statue. If you're feeling down about it, here's what Oh told Entertainment Tonight on the Emmys red carpet.

"Images are extremely important to culture, and being a part of that image making, I take a great responsibility, and I'm very grateful for my job to be able to do so," she said. "I hope that the wave continues and we see real change. But it's also [important] to be patient, you know what I mean? Because change is slow and I don't want people to ever give up on it."

As upsetting as her loss is, Oh doesn't want people to ever stop fighting for change and representation that matters.

How to Deal With Infertility Because of PCOS

$

If you've been trying to get pregnant and are handed a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome, it can be a lot to process. Not only are you trying to find out what is causing your infertility, but you're now also facing a health problem that can impact your ability to conceive as well as cause other symptoms and health issues. Let's take a look at what PCOS is, why it can impact fertility and what can be done about it.

PCOS defined

PCOS is caused by a reproductive hormone imbalance. According to materials from the Office on Women's Health, typically, there is a certain rhythmic ebbing and flowing of reproductive hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, that work carefully together to release an egg at the proper time during the menstrual cycle. But hormone levels can be impacted by many factors, including having high levels of male hormones (also known as androgens) or producing too much insulin, and this can put your whole system out of whack the OWH explains. Understandably, it's not hard to see how ovulation problems can make trying to conceive difficult, if not impossible.

More: How Infertility & Trying to Conceive Changes Sex

"PCOS is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age," Dr. Ilana Ressler, a reproductive endocrinologist with RMA of Connecticut who specializes in patients with PCOS, tells SheKnows.

According to Ressler, PCOS is diagnosed when a patient meets two of the following three criteria:

  1. Irregular menstrual cycles,
  2. Elevated androgens, which are “male hormones,” like testosterone, or having symptoms of elevated androgens (e.g., acne or excess/unwanted hair growth) and
  3. Polycystic-appearing ovaries on ultrasound.

Dr. Christine Mullin, a physician and director of the in vitro fertilization program and preimplantation genetic diagnosis program at Northwell Health Fertility, tells SheKnows that PCOS is most often detected in early adulthood (late teens and 20s) and can cause enlarged ovaries in addition to cystlike follicles within the ovaries.

How can PCOS impact fertility?

It all boils down to hormones, both docs say. PCOS often interferes with ovulation, which means maybe you'll ovulate, and maybe you won't. Also, in addition to irregular ovulation, Mullin says that those with PCOS can have prolonged menstrual cycles, where you have no idea when or if you're ovulating, and it can take months to have a period.

"This makes it difficult to determine your most fertile times, and therefore, [it's] difficult to conceive," she says. "If you’re not ovulating, an egg cannot be fertilized by sperm, so you can’t get pregnant."

What treatments are available for someone with PCOS who wants to conceive?

For those who are not interested in conceiving, treatment for PCOS is pretty easy — Mullin says, "Typical treatment for PCOS is birth control because most birth controls contain the hormone progestin that can help to alleviate symptoms."
