Get ready to root for your favorite contestant and drool over dishes you only wish you could make — MasterChef is back! Season 9 of the cooking competition will see 43 of America's best home chefs compete for one of the top 24's coveted white aprons.

But this year, there's a twist. The contestants aren't just competing against each other... the judges are too. Gordon Ramsay, Aarón Sánchez and Joe Bastianich each have only eight aprons to hand out. They will then mentor their team for the entirety of the season in hopes that one of their original white-apron picks will be the last home chef standing.

Just think of it as the culinary version of The Voice.

Of course, this undoubtedly means the judges will be more selective than ever. They want to ensure that the home chefs they give their aprons too give them the greatest chance possible to earn those end-of-season bragging rights. I mean, c'mon, we all know that Bastianich hates to lose at anything.

And so far, it seems the judges won't be disappointed. Here's what we know about the first crop of home chefs who've earned an apron.

1. Bowen

MasterChef Season 9 Bowen

Prepare to get in your feels quickly, people. Twenty-four-year-old Bowen is the stuff good stories are made of. Originally from Tianjin, China, he came to the U.S. at age 15. In China, his father is a professional chef whom Bowen likens to Ramsay ("always yelling in the kitchen"). But Bowen's backstory gets emotional when the young pilot explains that he was in a severe car accident nearly two years before, spending a year of recovery in the hospital. "MasterChef got me through it," he says, explaining it was the only show he watched. *BRB, crying*

For Bowen's dish, he made a dish called Lion's Head meatball garnished with pickled radish. All of the judges raved about the taste of the meal, and ultimately, both Bastianich and Ramsay offered Bowen an apron. Through tears, Bowen accepted the apron offered by Ramsay — who said the home chef was, "a fascinating character."

2. Emily

MasterChef Season 9 Emily

This 28-year-old food research analyst (pictured above right) from Neenah, Wisconsin, has a few things going for her. Not only is her career centered on all things culinary — she calls herself a "food anthropologist" — but she has also traveled nearly every continent, sampling a wide range of global cuisines.

Although Bastianich was initially put off by Emily's use of garlic and onion powder on her filet mignon, the judges praised the steak as well as her mushroom duxelle and fondant potato with red wine pan sauce. It was enough for Bastianich to offer her an apron if she could assure him she was worth it (which she did).

3. Samantha

MasterChef Season 9 Samantha

Most of this 20-year-old's culinary experience comes from cooking "hangover food" for her sorority sisters in West Des Moines, Iowa. However, her love for food stretches back much further to her family. But sadly, Samantha's father was diagnosed with — and subsequently succumbed to — stage-4 renal cell carcinoma when she was a teen. Coming into the competition, she feels like her dad is looking over her.

Although all the judges thought the chicken portion of Samantha's chicken piccata was cooked beautifully, they found fault with her potato purée and wine reduction. Sánchez and Bastianich both passed on the college student, but Ramsay saw tremendous potential in her — and it earned her one of his aprons.

4. Mark

MasterChef Season 9 Mark

Oh, Mark. This cocky 19-year-old dishwasher from Rockport, Maine, came into the MasterChef kitchen and proclaimed himself "one of the most talented chefs in the room." Having amassed tons of life experience working at his family's restaurant, Mark claimed he didn't need culinary school. Everyone seemed anxious to see whether he could back his swagger.

Unfortunately, he couldn't. Mark's pan-roasted lamb chops fell flat with the judges — largely because they were extremely undercooked. Ramsay seemed especially unimpressed, calling Mark "full of shit" and telling him to "man up a little bit." Sánchez and Bastianich both also passed. Or, wait, did they? As Ramsay dismissed Mark and told him to come back next year, Bastianich offered up an apron. Plot twist!

Not pictured

Also making the first cut was 34-year-old Miami, Florida event promoter Shanika, 34, who promised, "I cook how I look: bold, tough, daring." That confidence (and some culinary skills) impressed Bastianich enough to land Shanika a spot on his team. Sánchez picked up a home chef named Julia, and Ramsay added a home chef named Sid to his roster.

Flip or Flop Season 8 Features Post-Divorce Tension Between the El Moussas

When HGTV's Flip or Flop returns for Season 8 on Thursday, fans may have a different viewing experience than in the past. That can be chalked up to the fact that cohosts Tarek El Moussa and Christina El Moussa are still working together after ending their marriage, which is bound to create some tension. In a new interview with Daily Pop on E! News, Tarek got real with cohosts Morgan Stewart and Carissa Culiner about how just how hard working with Christina was during Season 8 given the former couple's history together

More: Tarek & Christina El Moussa's Relationship Breakdown Will Be on Flip or Flop

In a clip of the new Flip or Flop season, Christina gets a little freaked when she and Tarek find a mouse in a run-down house. The clip then jumps to their conversation after, wherein he says, "I'm desensitized?"

Christina shoots back, "Yeah. To a rodent almost crawling on your foot and you don't even care?!"

As Tarek leaves the room, he says, "I'm desensitized to everything. Trust me." Christina makes a face at the camera and follows him out.

The tension is certainly noticeable, and Stewart and Culiner comment on it during Tarek's interview with them for Daily Pop. He explains, "We do our best to be as professional as possible, but every now and then we have to jab at each other — sometimes more serious than others. It's kind of how it goes nowadays."

Culiner asks, "Are you nervous about any of that tension showing on camera? Or are you like, 'That's real life.'"

"I just watched the first episode last week," Tarek admits, "and it is absolutely different than anything you've ever seen from us. We got into a few arguments that I didn't think were going to make [it to] camera and they did."

Yikes. Further questions about the future of Flip or Flop, as well as whether or not it's comfortable spending so much time with his ex make Tarek visibly uncomfortable. "It's our job, you know?" he says, and when asked if he thinks if he or Christina is more likely to get a spinoff, he adds, "I have no idea. I wouldn't really care either way."

More: Tarek El Moussa Is Happy About Christina El Moussa's New Relationship

Tarek also said he wishes Christina the best. "We have kids together, so I need her to continue her career, and I want her to be successful and make money. That way she can live a great life and my kids can live a great life."

That's pretty diplomatic, all things considered. We're sure it's uncomfortable to work with your ex, especially in front of cameras that record your every move. E! News reports that it's too early to say whether this will be the last season of Flip or Flop, and there's no word yet on whether either of the El Moussas will get their own spinoff in the future. We're just hoping the new season isn't too tension-filled... for their sake and for the fans.

Just a few months ago, Jesse Williams was connected to Minka Kelly. Now, it looks like the Grey's Anatomy star is moving on once again. According to Page Six, Williams is dating someone new, though the outlet admits that the potential new couple is making strides to keep things under wraps for now — which means we have to take this news with a grain of salt, exciting though it may be.

Here's what we know about Williams' rumored new romance: An insider told Page Six that he and SportsNet New York anchor Taylor Rooks spent time together in Atlantic City, New Jersey over Memorial Day weekend. The pair was spotted at Kevin Hart's comedy show at Boardwalk Hall, and it looked like they were on a date.

“They are eager to keep their romance under wraps. He’s been going through a difficult divorce [from first wife Aryn Drake-Lee], but he’s found solace with Taylor,” the source said. Page Six said that representatives for Williams and Rooks did not comment on the story.

After Williams filed for divorce from Drake-Lee in 2017, he asked the judge to grant him joint physical and legal custody of their two children, Sadie and Maceo. Per E! News, after a monthslong court battle, in March 2018, a judge granted the pair joint custody. Williams sees his children every other weekend and two days during the week as well as on Father's Day. He was previously ordered to pay Drake-Lee more than $50,000 in spousal support each month.

Rooks, meanwhile, has gained notoriety in the sports world for her YouTube series and podcast Timeout with Taylor Rooks. She's interviewed guests including Meek Mill, Dion Waiters and Dwyane Wade. If the rumors are true and these two are a couple, then we wish Rooks and Williams the best!

Things to Keep in Mind When You're in an Early-Days Sex Haze With a New Partner

$

I’m in the throes of a new relationship, and the sex is red hot. Every first and new experience is exciting, and I cannot wait for the next steamy sesh. In the past, I’ve been burned by having high “sexpectations.” As soon as the blissful butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling fades, so does the relationship. (Not all the time, but it happens.) In this instance, there’s a shelf life on the relationship since my partner is moving cross-country. So even though I’m totally intoxicated by new relationship energy, I have realistic expectations — whether I like it or not.

“The honeymoon phase is a very exciting time for couples,” Jenna Ponaman, a relationship coach and expert, tells SheKnows. “Emotions are at their all-time high where an allusion is created that they have met their match in every way possible. Things are seemingly perfect, and this person can do no wrong. However, what usually happens is that all of the qualities and things that you originally held at high value in a relationship can easily become undermined or swept under the rug.”

Ponaman reminds us it is very easy to jump the gun at this point in time and start to imagine a future with this person: “This is a bit of a catch-22, because while you want to remain open to seeing what possibilities lay ahead, you also want to proceed with caution.”

Instead of playing fortuneteller, make sure you are crystal clear on what it is you are looking for in a relationship and what the other person wants. “You may find yourself in a relationship where the other person may not want to be committed while you are looking for that kind of commitment,” she says.

Whether you’re in the intoxicating beginning of a new relationship or recently got hitched, here are a few things to keep in mind during these intense moments of attraction.

Communicate — often

There are several things people should keep in mind during those magical early days of a new sexual relationship. Kayla Lords, a writer and sexpert for Jack and Jill, tells SheKnows that she encourages couples to communicate often.

“What you do in the beginning of a relationship will stick with you throughout it,” she says. “If you don't develop good communication skills now, while the sex and romance are at a fever pitch and everything feels good, it'll be harder to do when reality sinks in.”

Share likes & dislikes

Share what you enjoy and what you don't during sex. “Talk about the fantasies you're comfortable sharing and ask about your partner's fantasies and desires.,” says Lords. “Anything you can do to make it easy to talk to each other now will help later.”

Don’t make assumptions

“When everything feels good at the beginning, it's easy to think your partner feels the same way or is having a good time too,” Lords advises. “Don't assume you know anything or that you're on the same page. Ask plenty of questions and pay attention to the answers you receive. Lords suggests asking yourself, “Do they match with what you see with your own eyes?”

Honesty is key

Whether it's about your STI risk or what you enjoy during sex, be honest. “Say what you mean and mean what you say,” Lords says. “A good feeling can turn bitter quickly once you start hiding your true feelings or carrying resentment around because a need isn't getting met.”

Don’t fake it

“If you pretend to like something now, your partner will probably keep doing it throughout the relationship,” Bethany Ricciardi, a sex educator at TooTimid, tells SheKnows.

“Talk and be open about what feels good and what doesn't. Don't start listing off things they do wrong, but show them what you're into," she advises.

Use protection

Be sure to protect yourself when you're having sex. “You would think this is common knowledge, but in this current day and age more and more young couples neglect common precautions when it comes to sex,” Ponaman says. “[The] honeymoon [sex] phase does not mean you’re in a serious relationship, so protect yourself from the things that will force the relationship to go somewhere it is not ready to go.”

Take things slowly

“When you're just starting to create a new physical relationship with someone, it might be tempting to pull out the whips and handcuffs,” Ricciardi says. Still, she encourages couples to take it slowly and leave your partner wanting more. “You can introduce something new to them every time you're back in the bedroom together and keep the sexy spontaneity and mystery alive!”

Don’t compare a new partner to your ex

Whatever you do, don't compare this new person to your ex. One of the best parts about them is that they aren't your ex, and you have an open door of brand-new memories to create. There might be things you like and dislike about why this person does or doesn't remind you of an ex, but shake the thought off and focus on what you want this brand-new relationship to look like.

Don’t let adoration blind you

Don't let the butterflies and adoration blind you. Everyone tries to be their absolute best in the beginning, and you want to see through that and still love them for their imperfections. Be sure to stay clear-minded enough to make rational decisions.

You don't want to totally lose yourself in this relationship, especially right at the start. Be sure to stay your own person, and don't become too emotionally dedicated too soon. Be honest with yourself; is who you're with the type of person you want to stay with?

And it should go without saying, but have fun! Getting to know a new partner can be an amazing experience, so be present in the moment and enjoy it.

Jason Momoa Doesn’t Have Great Things to Say About The Crow Remake Upon Quitting

Despite Sony Pictures announcing an October 2019 release date for its remake of the 1994 cult classic film The Crow, the reboot's long-attached star, Jason Momoa, has officially exited the project as of Thursday — leaving the film in limbo. The news came from Momoa himself in an Instagram post.

Momoa shared a photo of himself and the project's director, Corin Hardy, peeking over an illustration of The Crow. He captioned it, "I’ve waited 8 years to play this dream role. I love you @corinhardy and @sonypictures unfortunately I may have to wait 8 more. Not our team. But I swear I will. James O’Barr sorry to let you down I won’t on the next. This film needs to be set free. And to the fans. Sorry. I can’t play anything but what this film deserves and it needs love. I’m ready when it’s right." He ended the caption with, "Love u Corin" and "aloha j".

Per The Hollywood Reporter, financial issues between producer Samuel Hadida and Sony may have caused the project's demise. The project was slated to move forward despite Alex Proyas, the director of the original film, speaking out against the reboot for being disrespectful to the memory of Brandon Lee.

In the original film, Lee's character was brought back from the dead in order to avenge the death of his girlfriend, as well as his own. The actor was killed in an on-set accident during production and the tragedy served to heighten The Crow's cult status.

In November 2017, Momoa shared art of The Crow on Instagram, captioning it, "I’ve been waiting for sooooo long." The new remake was supposed to be very faithful to James O'Barr's 1989 indie comic, hence Momoa's apology in his Thursday statement.

It's always a bummer when interesting projects are shelved, especially for financial reasons. We respect Momoa's decision to leave, especially if the film didn't feel right to him as a fan and as a professional. Hopefully, a future for The Crow isn't totally gone, but we don't think anyone else can embody the role nor do it as respectfully as Momoa.

Jennifer Garner's New Movie Looks Amazing for These Reasons

The trailer for Jennifer Garner's new movie, Peppermint, is one of the most badass things we've seen this week. No, seriously — it's simultaneously a throwback to her Alias days and a whole new take on a growing trend in film, where women avenge the deaths of their families, Punisher-style, and basically become avenging angels. We are so, so here for it.

More: Everyone Lost Their Cool Over Jennifer Garner's Oscars Appearance

Peppermint Trailer 1

Peppermint Trailer 1

Peppermint follows Garner's character as she wakes up from a coma after her family is gunned down at a fair. When the prosecutors decide there isn't enough evidence to convict the killers, Garner's character "disappears" for five years to train for revenge, not only upon the killers but upon the system that enabled them to do what they did and get away with it. She enacts that revenge bloodily and without shame.

It's been a very long time since we've seen Garner in any kind of action role. She never really recovered from how badly Elektra flopped at the box office in 2005, despite Alias being one of the best female-led action shows of the early aughts. That sucks, especially when we consider how many male actors go on to have thriving careers after their own action or superhero movies flop (like, for example, Ben Affleck, whose Daredevil first introduced Garner's take on Elektra Natchios and led to the pair marrying in real life before divorcing in 2017).

I mean... look at how many Bourne movies there are. Can we move on already?

It seems like we aren't the only ones who feel that way. Peppermint follows in the footsteps of films like Proud Mary, starring Taraji P. Henson, and Breaking In, starring Gabrielle Union, both of which featured badass women taking the lead. Peppermint is yet another female-led movie backed by STX Entertainment, a relatively new company in Hollywood whose titles (so far) include The Edge of Seventeen, A Bad Moms Christmas, I Feel Pretty and the upcoming Second Act starring Jennifer Lopez.

More: Ben Affleck Could Be Jennifer Garner's New Neighbor

From the trailer, Peppermint looks like it flips some really tired tropes on its head, though it also leans into others pretty hard. While the film doesn't fridge a woman for the plot development of its male lead and instead does the opposite, the trailer suggests that it also relies heavily on the idea of a woman going "mad" at the loss of her family. Garner's character growing out her hair before she goes Punisher-side also points to some weird ideas about femininity and how women have to maintain some aspect of "prettiness," even when they're literally killing criminals and hanging them from Ferris wheels.

That being said, this movie looks amazing... and we are so excited to see it on opening weekend.

According to Forbes, STX and Lakeshore Entertainment will release Peppermint on Sept. 7, 2018. The film is directed by Pierre Morel, who was also behind the first Taken movie, as well as District B13From Paris With Love and The Gunman. We hope it's a rousing success at the box office, not only so we can (hopefully) get more action movies starring Garner, but so we can continue to prove that action movies fronted by women are much-desired and much-needed in Hollywood.

6 Things Women Should Consider Before Joining an MLM

$

If you’ve never heard the term multilevel marketing before, you’ve still probably heard of an MLM company. Have a friend selling essential oils? Ever bought Mary Kay? Do you have a drawerful of LuLaRoe leggings? Yep, those are multilevel marketing companies. They’re also sometimes referred to as referral marketing, pyramid selling or network marketing.

Here’s the basic way they work: A company is formed. They usually have a product, like the aforementioned essential oils, makeup or leggings. Rather than put their product on store shelves, they instead hire "distributors" to do direct selling. Those distributors make money in two ways. One, distributors sell a product and make money off the top. Two, distributors recruit other people to be distributors and make a cut of what these new distributors sell.

More: What to Do When You Unexpectedly Lose Your Job

Unlike other selling positions, you don’t make a salary or minimum wage, and you almost always have to pay up front for product that you can sell. There has been plenty of blowback about the legitimacy of multilevel marketing. The Atlantic did a feature on the topic and found that at one company, 94 percent of sellers made an average of $1 a month. A Quartz article investigated the psychological and financial toll of joining another popular MLM. John Oliver did a 30-minute segment on the topic, concluding that “MLMs are hurting people and we need to spread the word about their dangers.”

If the above hasn’t made you wary about the value of multilevel marketing — maybe you have a friend who is doing really well with one, maybe you love a product and wouldn’t mind selling it, whatever the reason — here are a few things to consider before joining one yourself.

1. Find out what you’re selling

The Federal Trade Commission recommends evaluating the product you’re going to be selling, as many of them promise unsubstantiated “miracle” cures and could even be dangerous. See if there’s good, solid research to back up any claims made.

“I recommend only doing it if you really love a product,” said Ashley Feinstein Gerstley, life coach and owner of The Fiscal Femme, who has had several clients who did multilevel marketing on the side.

More: These Red Flags May Mean You Shouldn't Take the Job

2. Research the company

The FTC recommends learning how long the company has been in business, searching the name with keywords like “scam” or “complaint” tacked onto the term and going several pages back in results. Has the company been sued for bad business practice? Does it have a positive or negative reputation?

“When you’re selling something, your reputation is on the line too. Make sure it’s a company that you’re happy to be the face of,” Gerstley said.

3. Take time to evaluate the offer

Do not sign a contract or pay money up front in an “opportunity meeting,” the FTC advises. The meeting is also your chance to ask questions about the compensation structure, expenses you can anticipate and documentation supporting any claims about how much money you can expect to make.

“It’s important to understand the financials,” Gerstley said. “If you have to put in a really high up-front investment, it could be a red flag or really important to look at.”

The FTC also has an excellent list of questions to ask the person recruiting you, including how many people they’ve recruited and how long they’ve been in the business. It’s also a good idea to have a friend read over the contract too.

“I wouldn’t recommend putting yourself in financial distress in any way to join on,” Gerstley added.

4. Get the refund policy in writing

Many MLM companies say that they allow you to return unused product, but the details of the return policy can be difficult to parse and leave you with a garage filled with unused product and money you won’t see again. Get their refund policy in writing, the FTC recommends, including whether you’ll receive a full refund.

5. Ask about training requirements

Training can be another cost MLMs require you to shoulder, so ask up front about what kind of training and training materials are required, how much time they take and what happens if you don’t attend, the FTC suggests.

6. How do you make money?

Per the FTC, a valid multilevel marketing plan will mean that distributors — what you would be signing up to be — make most of their money through direct sales of a product or service. So, if you’re a distributor selling athletic wear, for example, you’ll earn most of your money through selling running shorts and synthetic shirts.

But if most of the money you’re making is by recruiting more distributors — signing people up to do the same job you do, just a step on the ladder below you — then, as the FTC says plainly, “It could be a pyramid scheme. Pyramid schemes are illegal, and the vast majority of participants lose money.”

Good luck on your side-hustle quest, and dodge the scammers as best you can.

Serena Williams Wants to Pass Along This Body-Positive Lesson to Her Daughter

In her 20-plus year career as an athlete and celebrity, Serena Williams has endured quite a lot of highs and lows. But among the trophies she's earned, praise she's received, new business ventures she's embarked on and personal milestones she hit (including getting married and becoming a mother inside of a year), Williams has faced a lot of negativity, mostly aimed to tears her down based on her appearance. Now, she's pushing back and telling Harper's Bazaar UK in a new interview how she's turning that negativity into a teaching moment for herself and her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr.

More: Serena Williams Is Pursuing a New Career That Has Nothing to Do With Tennis

"It was hard for me," Williams said of the criticisms she once faced. "People would say I was born a guy, all because of my arms, or because I'm strong. I was different to [her sister] Venus: She was thin and tall and beautiful, and I am strong and muscular—and beautiful, but, you know, it was just totally different."

While it's heartbreaking to know that Williams faced the kind of unfair, sexist cruelty that — as many woman can confirm — is somehow just the norm for being a woman in this world, the conversation got even more heartwrenching when she spoke about a 2004 report that noted one goal: to reach a size four.

"Oh God, I'll never be a size four," Williams remarked to Harper's Bazaar. "Why would I want to do that, and be that?"

But now, Williams is in a more reflective, positive state of mind; she's embracing her body in all its curves and glory. "This is me, and this is my weapon and machine," Williams stated. "But I love that I said that because I can understand. I can show Olympia [her daughter] that I struggled, but now I'm happy with who I am and what I am and what I look like. Olympia was born and she had my arms, and instead of being sad and fearful about what people would say about her, I was just so happy."

She continued, "I knew I was having a girl, because when I was playing tennis in the [2017 Australia Open], I didn't have one day of morning sickness, no symptoms. Australia is really hot, some days can be over 40 degrees [Celsius], which is insane, but she never complained. I said to Alexis, 'This is a girl. Only a woman can be this strong.'"

We've only known them for a little while, but Chip and Joanna Gaines have been in it for the long haul for quite some time. In fact, we know just how long these two have been together because they celebrated one of their two big relationship milestones on Thursday, May 31: their 15th wedding anniversary.

The respective worlds of Instagram and Twitter were made a little brighter on Thursday when Chip and Joanna hopped onto social media to celebrate their big day. Joanna chose her Instagram as the place where she could send out her love to her adorable hubby, putting up a throwback photo from their wedding day to mark the occasion.

"It's been a good fifteen years @chipgaines. Here's to fifty more..." Joanna captioned the photo, adding in an event-appropriate heart emoji to make sure the love was really felt. But gosh, looking at this photo is such a trip because these two lovebirds look so young. Time really does fly, huh?

Meanwhile, Chip went straight to his Twitter account to type out his thoughts and feelings about 15 years of marriage to Joanna. "15 years... where’d they go/15 years... I’d like to know/15 more, to God I pray/15 more just to make her day," Chip wrote, formatting it into a bit of a makeshift poem before ending the entire, sweet tweet with a resounding: "Happy anniversary, sweet girl!"

Chip and Joanna have been through so much in the last 15 years and we've seen just a bit of that in recent years, but over the course of the last year especially. After announcing in 2017 that Season 5 of Fixer Upper would be their last, the couple has (together and separately) run a marathon, announced they were expecting their fifth child, launched a home goods line in collaboration with Target, run their businesses (including their beloved Magnolia!) and they've done it while being stellar parents to their four kids. That's a lot crammed into such a short amount of time, but there's nobody better suited for it than the superstars that are Chip and Joanna Gaines.

My Anxiety Got Me Fired From 5 Jobs

Anna Wintour has reportedly said that everyone should be fired at least once. But what if you’re fired five times?

Although I hate to admit it, I was let go from five jobs in five years, but not because I was incompetent — it was because I had severe anxiety.

From the time I entered middle school, I have suffered from anxiety. I was always described as being “high-strung,” but throughout my educational career, this wasn’t much of an issue. If anything, my anxiety enabled my academic success because I obsessed over grades and assignments. I was the student who started to write the paper the day that it was assigned; I was the student who began to study for the exam at least a full week in advance; and I was the student who always completed the extra assignments even though I didn’t need the additional points.

More: Can Workplace Anxiety Be a Good Thing?

In high school, I was every teacher’s pet, and in college, I was every professor’s prodigy. I was lauded for my diligence and work ethic, but it was really my anxiety that should’ve been praised. My anxiety is what compelled me to complete all tasks ahead of time and with extensive effort. While having this mental illness actually benefited me for a large portion of my life, it suddenly destroyed me as I entered into the career world.

While a proactive and assiduous workaholic might appear to be every employer’s dream, when anxiety is the cause of the work ethic, employers often become displeased. Because I worked all hours of the day including weekends, my employers often described me as “intense.” When problems would arise, rather than remaining calm while working toward resolving the issues, I would become agitated, and my anxiety began to show itself in the worst possible ways.

It was difficult for me to control my emotions, so as soon as potential issues occurred, I became overwhelmed and distressed, as I would immediately think of all the worst possible outcomes. Sometimes, I would become so frustrated that I would just sit at my desk and cry. But I was known to make mountains out of molehills, and that became my downfall.

Oftentimes, my bosses would tell me to relax or just breathe, because everything was going to be OK, but I couldn’t believe that until it actually happened. I would immediately react without even processing the issue. My nerves and anxiety were emanating in the office, and I suddenly became known as a source of drama.

At the end of each year, I would receive an excellent review from my boss, but it was always followed by “I’m sorry, but this isn’t a good fit.” Some employers would use euphemisms for my anxiety, claiming that I was “high energy,” but I knew that they just didn’t want to deal with an anxious worker.

As this pattern persisted, I began to reassess my life to discover the cause of the issue. I knew that I was high-strung and easily stressed, but I never sought help from a therapist because I always viewed therapy as a form of punishment.

While I was growing up, my parents would threaten me with therapy whenever I misbehaved or displayed signs of anxiety and depression. I can vividly remember my father looking exasperated as he screamed down the hallway, “You have issues! There’s something wrong with you!” Every time he and I had a dispute, he would try to end it with those hurtful statements, as though I were too irrational to argue, so he was automatically right.

Even in my most depressed moments when I would spend most of the day sleeping in my bed, my parents would take turns entering my bedroom to berate me for wasting the day away, and in a rather malicious tone, they would yell, “You’re depressed! You have problems! Get help!” I couldn’t fathom how they were mad at me when I didn’t do anything wrong.

To spite my parents, I never went to therapy, and I refused to succumb to their desires. But after losing four jobs, I became desperate for success, so I finally capitulated. Unfortunately, I sought the wrong therapist, so I can’t say that my first year of therapy was beneficial for my career. But after finding a psychiatrist who could properly medicate me, I began to thrive in all aspects of my job.

More: Instead of Helping, My Psychiatrist Made My Mental Health So Much Worse

It would be remiss to say that therapy and medications were the cure-all. In reevaluating my life and discussing my issues with a therapist, I realized that my parents were the main source of my anxiety, so as I gradually convalesced, I finally gained the courage I needed to move out of my parents’ house and into my very own place.

Problems still arise at work, but at least now, I know how to properly react and deal with them. I’ve learned that employers like people who can resolve issues on their own without engaging their emotions. They prefer people who are laid-back and easygoing but still get the job done.

I can’t say that my anxiety is completely nonexistent at work, but when it does begin to show, I recognize that I need to take a step back, reevaluate the situation and maintain equanimity while conversing with my colleagues or my boss.

5 Black Women Share the Washday Routines That Keep Their Hair Healthy

Although we have a popular number-letter system for identifying our hair’s texture, the truth is Black women more often than not have various textures throughout their hair. For instance, the hairs nearest the nape of my neck are tight and spirally, while the ones in the middle of my head are wavy. Managing various curl patterns at the same time requires a very specific cleansing and styling routine.

And this usually means that what works for one person — even if they share one of your textures — won’t necessarily work for you. So we spend a lot of time trading information and products, hoping that a mix of advice and experimenting will help us land on a washday routine that actually works. In an effort to help you with that advice part, five Black women with varying curl patterns, including myself, are sharing the washday routines that keep their hair healthy and in check.

Black Women Share Hair Routine 1

Name: Nikki

Style: Wavy/curly pixie

Routine: So, I’m braving the awkward grow-out phase and doing everything I can to ensure my curls remain intact as they get longer. Right now, since my hair is super-dry in between seasons, the LOC (leave-in, oil, cream) method is truly saving my mane. I’m almost always switching out my shampoos and conditioners (nature of my job as a beauty editor), but for the past few months, I’ve been loving Briogeo’s Don’t Despair, Repair! Super Moisture Shampoo and Not Your Mother’s Natural Matcha Green Tea & Wild Apple Blossom Nutrient Rich Butter Masque. The combo of these two has provided the most hydration without weighing down my hair, which is definitely on the finer side.

After that, I’ll spritz my hair with Briogeo’s Don't Dispair, Repair! Strength & Moisture Leave-In Mask and get out the shower. From there, I run a dime-size amount of Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil through my hair. It smells amazing and includes peppermint oil too, which really helps with my itchy scalp. Sometimes, I’ll add a little tea tree oil to the mix if it feels extra flaky. Lastly, before wrapping my hair in an Aquis towel, I’ll finger-comb my hair with Creme of Nature’s Pure Honey Moisture Whip Twisting Cream. It’s made with honey, coconut oil and shea butter, all ingredients that keep me moisturized without being too heavy.

Routine: As most naturals, I usually reserve washday for Sunday. I’ll use shampoo on my hair about once every two weeks, so when I do, I use the Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration Shampoo followed by the Extreme Restoration Conditioner. My current leave-in conditioner go-to is Shea Moisture’s Curl Stretch Pudding, so I’ll section off my hair and apply it evenly, then just go about my day. The next morning, I’ll wet my hair again and style it with Cantu Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream, which is my wash-and-go holy grail curly product.

Name: Jasmine

Style: Low-cut Caesar

Routine: I keep my hair pretty short in a low-cut Caesar, so I maintain my hair by using a mixture of almond, olive and argan oils with some water and glycerin. It helps keep my scalp protected, especially in those NYC winter months. I love using Pantene products to wash and condition my hair.

Wearing a do-rag at night is extremely essential for me to keep my cut lasting fresh and preventing any harsh pulling I get from the pillow at night. In the summertime, I like to bleach my hair platinum blond. It’s just more fun! I use Shimmer Lights shampoo to keep the color vibrant. I use the same oiling routine, and for added hydration, I use Pantene’s curling custard to combat the harsh sunrays.

Black Women Share Hair Routine 4

Black Women Share Hair Routine 4

Name: Danielle

Style: Locs

Routine: I’ve had my locs for a little over four years now. On washday, which is about every two to three weeks, I like to lightly brush them to make sure I’m not washing any dust or lint into my hair. I also spray them with a little water beforehand to prevent breakage. I make sure all the buildup is brushed up so my washing can be more effective. I wash starting in sections. My choice of shampoo is currently Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap, in peppermint or tea tree. This soap has all-natural ingredients and is sulfur-free so that I can wash without leaving behind any residue.

After washing, I dry with a T-shirt wrapped around my head. Once my hair is damp and not soaking wet, I add a mixture of coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba and Jamaican black castor oil to remoisturize my hair and scalp. To style, I use Cantu Shea Butter Twist & Lock Gel along with my spray bottle of water because you never want to twist dry locs! I sleep with a scarf around my edges and a stocking to keep away anything that could get caught in my hair and maintain moisture by spritzing with water and massaging in my mixture of oils. I like to use all-natural and unprocessed products in my hair. It helps me keep things simple and make sure my hair has a natural and healthy environment to grow!

Routine: I wash my hair with Aesop Calming Shampoo and then condition with Aussie Mega Moist Conditioner. I then do a twist-out using Cantu Coconut Curling Cream. Leave it in overnight, and that’s it! When it comes to hair, simpler is better for me.

14 Celebrities Who Were Raised by Strong Single Women

Not everyone grows up with two parents. That’s exactly what can be said about the following celebrities. These stars were raised by strong single women who helped shape them into who they are today.

More: 15 Celebrity Moms Who Make Us Feel Better About Our Postpartum Bodies

Some of the most famous faces in Hollywood come from single-parent homes. Did you know Julia Roberts and her siblings were basically raised by just their mom? In April 2017, the Oscar-winning actor opened up to People about the death of her mom, Betty Lou Bredemus.

“My mom worked a full-time job and raised three girls pretty much on her own,” the Wonder star said. “My brother [actor Eric Roberts] is older, so he was gone and out of the house. She never showed the strain of it.”

After Roberts became a mother to her three children (twins Hazel and Phinnaeus and son Henry) with Daniel Moder, she appreciated her mom even more. “[When I] had three children under 3 years old, I was like, ‘Mom, how did you do this?’” Roberts recalled to People. ”And instead of saying, ‘Well, you just have to apply yourself and it takes effort,’ she goes, ‘It’s called daycare, honey.’ And I was so appreciative and so grateful she didn’t tell me some sage, bullshit story about what it’s like to be a great mother.”

That’s just one story out of many from celebrities who grew up with an amazing woman guiding them along in this journey called life. Here are a few more.

1. Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera has never been shy about being raised by a single mom, Shelly Loraine, or about being a single mom herself after splitting with Jordan Bratman in 2010. While appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in November 2010, Aguilera said, "More power to single moms and those out there doing it. I was raised by a single mom — I'm a smart girl and I make choices for specific reasons."

In March, Paper magazine released a candid chat with Aguilera, where she talked about how her mom faced domestic violence and taught her how to be the strong, amazing woman she is today. She said, "I watched my mom have to be submissive, watch her Ps and Qs or she's gonna get beat up... You can either be, unfortunately, so damaged by it that you take a turn for the worse, or you can feel empowered by it and make choices to never go down that route." She even told Latina in May 2010 (via Us Weekly), "To remember the chaos that [my mother] went through, the abuse, I don't know how she did it. But it's amazing how much you can trick your mind into surviving when you have to."

2. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber was raised by his mom, Pattie Mallette, who had the singer when she was just 17. Despite the two facing ups and downs, like many mothers and their children do, Bieber still praised Mallette on Mother's Day 2018 for being an amazing mom. He shared sweet lyrics from Boyz II Men's "Song for Mama" next to an image of him hugging his mom. Bieber even wrote a song honoring his mom, "Turn to You," which he released in 2012.

"I wrote a song for my mom. But I'm going to put it out on Mother's Day," he told MTV News in May 2012. "[It's] about the struggles, I say in the song. She had me at, like, the age I am now. [It's about] just the struggles she went through and how brave she was, and I think the world needed to know that." In the song, he sings, "You worked two jobs to keep a roof up over our heads/You chose life for me, no you never gave up/I admire you for the strength you instilled in me."

3. Kanye West

Kanye West, Donda West, Strong Single Mom

In 2007, Kanye West's mother, Donda West, died from heart disease after undergoing plastic surgery and while facing "multiple post-operative factors," according to the L.A. coroner. Kanye had a strong bond with his mom, who raised him as a single mother in Chicago. Donda was a scholar and a college professor who also sat on the chair of the Kanye West Foundation, an educational nonprofit, and acted as the chief executive of West Brands, the parent company of the rapper's businesses.

The Life of Pablo artist has never been shy about how much he loved his mom and how much he misses her. In October 2008, he told Ellen DeGeneres, "She really supported me, and she always wanted me to be the best that I could be and not get hung up on the small things. So, with her not being here to try and talk me into doing things, I just try to do things she would want me to do."

4. Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez's parents split when she was only 5, which affected the actor/singer greatly. But Gomez realizes what a tough job her mom, Mandy Teefey, had, especially since she was a teen mom. "Having me at 16 had to have been a big responsibility," she said during a June 2011 E! special (via Huffington Post), "My mom gave up everything for me and had, like, three jobs. She supported me, sacrificed her life for me."

In October 2012, she told Glamour, "It’s because of [my mom] that I can do things on my own. I like being professional. I like showing up on time. I like being good to people, and I know that I’m reflecting her at the end of the day."

5. Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys

If there's one speech that describes how Alicia Keys feels about her mom, Terria Joseph, it's the one she gave at the Harlem School of the Arts' 50th anniversary gala in October 2015. "Tonight, this honor here is really all about my mother,” she said. “I can only say... and she’s standing behind me so I can’t even see her... I can only say thank you, and it’ll never, ever be enough."

Then, she got real. Yes, you might need tissues. The singer continued, “I want to thank her for all the Sundays she played Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington on vinyl. I want to thank her for being my mother, my father, my best friend and my biggest fan — even when nobody knew a thing about me. I want to thank you for being my example of dedication, of loyalty, of determination, of dreams, of compassion, of kindness, reciprocity and womanhood. I want to thank her for everything that I am, because without her, I wouldn’t have the soul that I have, I wouldn’t have the love that I have, the will that I have, the versatility that I have or the strength that I have... Because without you, there would be no me, and that’s actually and artfully.”

6. Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson's estranged father divorced her mom, Jeanne Taylor, when the American Idol winner was 6. It's no secret that Clarkson has no relationship with her father. The song "Piece by Piece" is even about him. However, Clarkson is very close with her mom. She credited her mom for giving her the strength to do what she loves during a "Finding Your Voice as a Parent" panel hosted by Today and The Voice in February.

"How I've been able to handle this industry and what has been thrown at me, I can't thank her enough," Clarkson said. "She was the perfect mom. I don't think there's a perfect mom; I think there's a perfect mom to mold their kids for their situations. I thank my mom every day, because I wouldn't have been able to handle the criticism and flat-out 'I hope your baby chokes on its umbilical cord and dies' tweets. You're like 'Have a nice day, God bless.' My mom was a hard mom. She was like 'Get up, try again.' I think it really served me well."

7. Leonardo DiCaprio

Irmelin Indenbirken, Leonardo DiCaprio, Strong Single Mom

Leonardo DiCaprio has always praised his parents and credited them for helping him get to where he is today. His parents split when he was a toddler, and he truly admires both of them, he has said. After winning a Golden Globe in January 2014, the Revenant actor told Access Online, "I wouldn’t be doing any of this if it weren’t for her, both my parents." According to the Daily Mail, his mom didn't have an easy upbringing. She was reportedly born in a German air raid shelter in 1943 and lived the first two years of her life in the hospital due to a broken leg, infection and malnutrition.

She seems like a very strong woman who wanted to give her son the world. DiCaprio also spoke specifically about his mom, Irmelin Indenbirken, with Access Online and said, "She supported this little kid who said, ‘I want to be an actor,’ at 12 years old, which is ridiculous, and she drove me to all these auditions. She’s the only reason I’m able to do what I do."

8. Jay-Z

Jay Z, Gloria Carter, Strong Single Mom

After Jay-Z's mother, Gloria Carter, came out in her son's song "Smile" from his 2017 album 4:44, their relationship became crystal clear: the rapper loves her immensely and wants her to live a happy life. While chatting with David Letterman on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction in April, Jay-Z gushed about his mom, "For her to sit in front of me and tell me 'I think I love someone' — I mean, I really cried. That's a real story. I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free."

It's easy to see where Jay-Z gets his work ethic: from his mom. According to USA Today, she was a New York City comptroller for 30 years. Once she split with the rapper's father after 13 years of marriage, she pretty much raised Jay-Z and his three siblings all by herself. "Sometimes I took on an extra job as a security guard to make ends meet," Carter told USA Today. She even worked after Jay-Z started becoming successful. "Jay had a problem with that," she said. Her kids wanted her to retire, which she did, but she quickly became "bored." And now, she does work through the Shawn Carter Foundation, of which she is the co-founder and CEO.

9. Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie, Marcheline Bertrand, Strong Single Mom

Angelina Jolie's late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, raised the actor and her brother, James Haven, after divorcing Jon Voight when Jolie was only a child. Jolie was also estranged from Voight for most of her life. It's no secret Jolie had a close bond with Bertrand, who died in 2007 from ovarian cancer. In 2011, Jolie told 60 Minutes, "I will never be as good a mother as she was. I will try my best, but I don’t think I could ever be. She was... she was just grace incarnate. She’s better than me."

After losing their mother, Jolie and Haven released a statement to People that read, "There are no words to express what an amazing woman and mother she was. She was our best friend.” In May 2017, Jolie expressed to Elle France (via People) how much she wished Bertrand was by her side. "I know how much she would have contributed to their [her grandchildren's] lives and I am sad they will miss out on that. I would give anything for her to be with me at this time. I’ve needed her. I talk to her often in my mind and try to think what she might say and how she might guide me.”

It's obvious how much her mom meant to her — and still does.

10. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has had a hard life, including dealing with substance abuse, bipolar disorder and bulimia. The "Tell Me You Love Me" singer had to also deal with an abusive father, who died in 2013 from cancer. Thankfully, her mom, Dianna De La Garza, has been by her side. Like her daughter, De La Garza also dealt with substance abuse issues and an eating disorder.

In March 2018, Lovato's mom released a book, Falling With Wings: A Mother's Story, and the singer wrote the foreword, which speaks to their relationship. In it, Lovato says, "I’m so proud of my mom for achieving something she’s always wanted to do — tell her story. She’s resilient, inspiring and strong. Because of her journey and strength to overcome the obstacles that she’s faced in her life, she is my hero.”

11. Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert, Lorna Colbert, Strong Single Mome

In June 2013, Stephen Colbert's mom, Lorna Colbert, died at the age of 92. She was an amazing woman who raised 11 children. Her obituary called her "an accomplished artist, a church leader, a businesswoman, a supporter of the arts and a woman whose profound faith was apparent in her daily life."

Colbert, his siblings and his mother didn't have an easy life. When Colbert was just 10, his father and two brothers were killed in a plane crash. As the youngest of 11 children, Colbert spent a lot of time with his mom, and they helped each other through the tragedy. "I was there with my mom, she was there for me, and I sort of kept her going. Mom and I used to joke that I raised my mom, because at a certain point it had changed her completely and it changed me completely.”

After her death, Colbert honored his mother on The Colbert Report by saying, "I know it may sound greedy to want more days with a person who lived so long. But the fact that my mother was 92 does not diminish it; it only magnifies the enormity of the room whose door has now quietly shut.” He added, "When you watch the show, if you like this show, that’s because of everybody who works here, and I’m lucky to be one of them. But when you watch the show and you also like me, that’s because of my mom.”

12. Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling, Donna Gosling, Strong Single Mom

Did you know Ryan Gosling was raised by a single mother? His mom, Donna Gosling, and his older sister pretty much shaped him into the person he is today. He even admitted to the Evening Standard in June 2016, "I think women are better than men. They are stronger. More evolved. You can tell especially when you have daughters and you see their early stages, they are just leaps and bounds beyond boys immediately." He also said, "I’ve always liked women more. I was brought up by my mother and older sister. I found my way into dance class. My home life now is mostly women. They are better than us. They make me better."

His 2014 film (and directorial debut) Lost River was actually inspired by his mom and his life growing up with a single mother. "My mom is very beautiful and was a single mom,” he said in May 2015 after a screening of the film, according to the Wisconsin Gazette. "When you’re a kid and you have a single mom, all men feel like wolves. Guys would whistle at her — it was very predatory and threatening. As a kid I felt helpless, so you start to imagine all these [scenarios] where you can do something. You see the world through the filter of your imagination."

13. Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron has a close connection with her mom, Gerda Martiz. They're so close, in fact, that Maritz helps Theron co-parent her two children. A defining moment in their lives and relationship was when Maritz shot and killed Theron's alcoholic father in self-defense.

In July 2017, Theron got real with Howard Stern about the night that changed their lives. "I have an incredible mother... She’s a huge inspiration in my life." The Oscar-winning actor continued, "She’s never really had therapy. So, a mother who never really had therapy dealing with something like that — trying to get your child out of that. Her philosophy was, 'This is horrible. Acknowledge that this is horrible. Now make a choice. Will this define you? Are you going to sink or are you going to swim?’ That was it."

Theron didn't stop there. She added, "I think both of us have dealt with that night really well. I think both of us still have to deal with the life that we had — and that’s what people don’t really realize. It’s not just about what happened one night."

14. Ariana Grande

Joan Grande, Ariana Grande, Strong Single Mom

In October 2014, Ariana Grande spoke candidly with The Telegraph, where she opened up about how difficult it was for her when her parents divorced. She also gushed about her mother, Joan Grande, and how she went above and beyond to ensure Grande lived her dream. At 8, the singer got the part of Annie in Annie, and her mom auditioned for a role so Grande wouldn't be left alone at rehearsals.

"She was Daddy Warbucks’ maid," Grande revealed. "She had to wear a French maid’s outfit and use a broom. She was like, 'I have no idea what I’m doing right now... but anything for my daughter.'" The "No Tears Left to Cry" singer thought her mom auditioning for Annie was "the funniest thing that’s ever happened in the history of the world!" She further explained, "Because my mom is a CEO [she runs Hose-McCann Communications], she has her own companies, her own full schedule. They design and manufacture the Marines’ communication equipment — like, [for] the Army and the Navy."

Our total BFF and mom crush Chrissy Teigen shared a photo with us a few days ago of brand-new baby boy Miles Theodore with his sister Luna Simone. We're pretty sure she and husband John Legend won't mind if we let you peek. OK, fiiine, so she posted it on Instagram for everybody to see:

Luna and Miles

Luna and Miles

No, that's the sound of your ovaries exploding. We're totally chill. Nothing cute to see here, not even the pacifier assist from Luna, who seems to already be a pro at the big sister thing.

The photo isn't Miles' first Instagram appearance. The little guy made quite a debut on May 20 on Teigen's Instagram page. She captioned his first shot: "Hello, world! This is Miles Theodore Stephens - We are drowning in his little peeps and nuzzles. Our household feels overwhelmed with love. Thank you for all your well wishes!"

And she's not kidding about the well wishes. Kim Kardashian West is clearly trying to move in on our BFF status. Teigen posted a shot of Luna standing next to a massive ball of yellow lavender roses (yes, you read that right — it's apparently a thing) and thanked Kardashian West with the caption, "Joey Lawrence WHOA @kimkardashian thank you!! Going to open a potpourri business in about one week taking orders now!"

The Mom's Guide to San Francisco

The Mom's Guide to Glasgow

For the longest time, when people thought of San Francisco, they thought of flower children staging love-ins in grassy parks and hippies turning on, tuning in and dropping out in the Haight-Ashbury district. But by the time I was growing up in the late '80s, San Francisco was the picturesque backdrop for the Tanner family from Full House. (The opening credits with the row of Painted Ladies houses are forever burned into my brain.) And today, San Francisco’s identity has pivoted from that of a hippie heaven and sitcom setting to a tech utopia, the heart of where everything app-related originates.

While a good portion of SF’s bohemian population has been replaced (aka pushed out due to insanely high rents) by hoodie-wearing aspiring entrepreneurs, the city is still an exhilarating destination to visit — with no shortage of things to do for the whole family.

My family makes about two to three trips to San Francisco each year from our home in Los Angeles, and we’re constantly amazed — and relieved — at all the awesome kid-friendly spots. Also, huge shoutout to San Francisco International Airport for having dedicated family bathrooms, nursing rooms and small playgrounds in their terminals. We wish all airports were like you.

Museums

San Francisco and the Bay Area in general have an unreal amount of crazy-good museums to visit. It’s not possible to do them all in one trip, of course, but pick two of the four listed below and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

The Children’s Creativity Museum: Right next to the Moscone Convention Center in the SoMa neighborhood, the Children’s Creativity Museum is an innovation- and technology-focused spot where kids are expected to get their hands dirty and create things. My older girls (ages 7 and 5) loved the stop-motion clay studio and the music area, while my baby boy (almost 1) got to crawl around in the imagination lab.

California Academy of Sciences: This is hands-down one of the best science museums in the world, with “an aquarium, a planetarium, and a natural history museum, all under one living roof” as the museum’s own tagline describes. Oh, and there’s also a rainforest in the middle of the museum as well. Plus, staffers roam around in bright-orange lab coats to give mini-lessons about each exhibit.

The Exploratorium: While California Academy of Sciences leans more toward environmental science, the Exploratorium, located in the Embarcadero, is all about tinkering and experimenting. (You know, like physics class, but way cooler.) This spot is really good for elementary schoolkids.

The Bay Area Discovery Museum: If you’re looking to get outside, head to the base of the Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Area Discovery Museum, which has both outdoor and indoor exhibits, playgrounds and STEM and art labs for kids from ages 6 months to 10 years old to enjoy. And you can’t beat that scenic setting. (Just remember to bring layers for everyone.)

Mom tip: Consider buying a CityPASS for these attractions and others like the cable car and a cruise around the bay.

Where to eat

Leopold’s Gasthaus SF: This small Bavarian-style restaurant in Russian Hill is a win-win for parents and kids. Parents can indulge their Oktoberfest fantasies with a well-rounded beer menu (you can order your beer in a large glass boot) while kids will gobble of the käsespätzle (Austrian for "mac and cheese"). And do order the apfelstrudel ("apple strudel") for dessert.

Delarosa: There’s no shortage of chain restaurants around Union Square and SoMa but Delarosa near the Yerba Buena Gardens is an original San Francisco treat. The main attraction of the menu is their Roman-style pizzas, but my family also overloaded on the appetizers, such as burrata bruschetta, spicy meatballs and a kale and romaine Caesar salad. Yes, of course they serve wine and beer and craft cocktails too. Bonus: there’s another location in the Marina.

Mom's guide to san francisco: Delarosa's

Yank Sing: To be entirely honest, the only place in San Francisco where I've ever had dim sum is at Yank Sing at the Embarcadero location on Stevenson. But it’s that good: I don’t care to find any other dim sum place. Be sure to make a reservation before you go. Then, once you get there, sit back and let the carts loaded with yummy goodness drop off delightful dishes at your table. Stretchy pants highly recommended.

Ghirardelli Square: This is a touristy stop along Fisherman’s Wharf but it’s a treat nonetheless. There are a few restaurants and shops to peek into, but the real highlight is to have an ice cream sundae at the original Ghirardelli chocolate store.

Where to stay

Airbnb: The home-sharing site is headquartered in San Francisco, so naturally, there are plenty of lodging options here. Just keep in mind that not all apartments or houses will have parking available. Uber, Lyft and BART are still the best ways to get around the city, but it’s something to remember in case you are driving.

Argonaut Hotel: If your top to-do in San Fran activities are centered around Fisherman’s Wharf, the Piers and Alcatraz, then the Argonaut is a perfect choice. The guest rooms are done in an adorable, nautical style, and they offer plenty of services and amenities for kids. Just be aware there’s an “Urban Facilities Fee” of $25 a night, which sounds like a drag, but actually includes discounts to area attractions, a $10 food and beverage credit, bike rentals and a guided waterfront tour on the weekends. So be sure to take advantage of all of this during your stay.

The Mom's Guide to San Francisco

St. Regis San Francisco: This luxury hotel has a sleek modernist vibe but it’s surprisingly family-friendly. Little guests receive a welcome bag with a St. Regis stuffed bear and a reusable water bottle. Its location near the Yerba Buena Gardens and SoMa is so convenient. There’s a Target two blocks away and yet another museum next door. (The SF MoMA.) Oh, and (how could we forget?) an indoor swimming pool.

Hilton San Francisco Financial District: The guestrooms here are standard Hilton fare, but the views of the city are stunning. The public spaces of the hotel are also super-modern, and there’s even an on-site karaoke room to play around in. If you stay here, be sure to join the HHonors loyalty program for the best rate. Then, using the HHonors app, you can select your exact room before checking in and then use your phone as the room key. That’s so SF!

It's Official: John Cena & Nikki Bella Are Back Together

It's a reunion some of us have been so ready for, with all of the hints, innuendo-laden tweets, wistful Instagrams and reflective interviews. It's a reunion that's kept us on tenterhooks as we wondered whether or not it would actually happen. But now, the time is here. The reunion is confirmed. You guys: John Cena and Nikki Bella are officially back together.

More: John Cena Says Everything & Nothing With a Tweet That May Be About Nikki Bella

As Friday, June 1 rolled around, People magazine issued a report confirming that nearly two months after calling off their engagement, Cena and Bella had rekindled their relationship. Finally! We knew you two would do it, but deep down, it was really a question of when it would happen.

An unnamed source spoke to People, confirming the happy news. "They were always going to find their way back to each other. It was never going to be permanent,” the source told the outlet.

This source's confirmation back up yet another source quoted by People from a few weeks ago, wherein they remarked that Cena and Bella calling off their engagement was never about them actually splitting up, but pressing pause on their wedding plans in order to figure out what their future together should look like.

"This was never really about ending their relationship — it was about calling off a wedding because something didn’t feel right. It was a wedding that was entered into under false pretenses. She was pretending she was okay with not having a kid, he was pretending he absolutely couldn’t and wouldn’t budge on that point," the source told People.

Cena and Bella have yet to issue official statements of their own, but considering the way they spoken about and treated each other publicly, this source's comments seem to align with their behavior. It was only after Memorial Day Weekend that Cena was posting a cryptic tweet about messing around, which had us wondering if he was talking about Bella. Oh, and who could forget the fact that these two have been regularly spotted out and about with one another like it's no big deal? Never mind the fact that these two have also reportedly been spending time with one another consistently, even after calling off their engagement back in early April.

It's good to see these two are back together, especially since they've spent so much time talking about their desire to rekindle their relationship. Let's hope that this rekindling sticks and they are in for the long haul, because we love seeing them together.

Leah Remini Takes Her Daughter's Breakfast Order — Via Text Message

Actor (and Scientology whistleblower) Leah Remini shared her daughter Sofia's recent hilarious breakfast request on Instagram — and we can so relate.

Leah Remini

Leah Remini

Remini's caption: "My kid, texting me her very specific food order, the fruit... well - that was 'an array'. Please tell me I’m not alone, does your kid text you from the next room? #gotkids #parenting#shortordercookupinhere #foryouiwill"

Remini quickly discovered she was not alone, as hundreds and hundreds of her Instagram followers responded with their own, well, array of kid-text tales.

One commenter wrote, "Two years ago, I would have sworn that would never be our household. In fact, I still used a flip phone then, my daughter rarely used cell phone, and my son had no phone at all. Now, we're worse than people we used to sneer at. We sometimes text one another while in the same room going about different activities."

Others reported other tasks requested by their kids. "I get a text message from the 18 yr old boy who is in the bathroom that he needs toilet paper," said one fan.

"My girls usually text me from their rooms to come kill a bug," said another.

Many followers were seriously grooving on Sofia's vocabulary: "The fact that your child used the word array is awesome!!!! Lol #parentingdoneright," one praised Remini.

Of course, we had plenty of haters and Judgy McJudgersons eager to respond:

"You created the situation put a stop to it now or she'll be like that for the rest of her life. Her future husband will thank you," griped one commenter. Seriously? "Her future husband?"

"Damn she can’t tell you that she gotta text you that???? NOTMYMOMGOALS," another wrote.

And then, of course, there were the comments that we're not sure exactly how to take.

"Don't forget to serve it on a satin pillow with lemon verbena spritzing in the air and a trail of rose petals," one commenter said (jokingly, we hope).

And this one just had to go there: "Aren't you glad you left Scientology? You would have missed that moment with your little one." Um, OK.

Honestly? We have no trouble with the occasional texted breakfast order from a polite kid. These days won't last forever. And Remini's Mother's Day Instagram post tells us that she has a pretty wonderful bond with her daughter.

Leah

Leah captioned the post: "I have been so loved today! I received a 50 page book from my daughter that made me cry, beautiful flowers, PJ,s, my favorite breakfast sandwich from my hubby @therealangelopagan @rindermikebrought us pastries, @williamkilmartinbrought over bagels... I mean a lot of calories were consumed, but the love was everything. #soblessed #mothersday."

You're doing fine, Leah. Next time, text Sofia for some toast, just the way you like it.
