I starved myself into a full blown mental illness

Nobody expects a diet to drive them to insanity, but that is exactly what happened to me three years ago. I was 22 years old, finishing up my senior year of college, and gradually developing the most significant mental illness of my life. As I continually dropped weight and felt powerless to stop, I wondered to myself, “How did something as innocuous as a diet make me lose my mind?” I felt dumbfounded, as if I had been blindsided by this affliction that nobody understood — least of all me.

More: My anxiety attacks chased me out of my job, relationship and country

I had struggled with my weight for my entire adult and adolescent life, and during the fall of my senior year, I decided that enough was enough. I downloaded a popular calorie counting app, and I began tracking my caloric intake and exercising moderately. At first, my diet felt innocent enough, but the casual nature of my diet gave way to a frightening intensity as time went on.

I became much more meticulous when counting calories, and my workouts lasted for hours on end. I started to notice small signs that my health was declining, but I felt powerless to stop it. My hair began falling out, my sensitivity to cold ramped up and I lost my menstrual cycle, yet I was unable to fully process how rapidly I was losing my grip on reality.

The ensuing decline in my mental health terrified me to my core. Nothing compares to the feeling of slowly going crazy, and that is exactly how I felt. The thoughts that I had no longer made sense. I started to think that one latte would make me go up a pant size. I feared the calories taken in by chewing gum. I began to believe that every single calorie counted and that I could calculate my intake and expenditure down to the tenth of a calorie.

More: How meditation can help ease your anxiety

At my worst, I was weighing every morsel of food that I ate, refusing to chew more than five pieces of gum per day and watching my body shut down. I had become depressed, anxious and irritable, and I hardly recognized myself. The funny, vibrant girl who should have been enjoying her last year of college had been replaced with the mere shell of a person. It was then that I reached a breaking point, and I decided to seek help in the interest of survival.

Anorexia is a fascinating mental illness because of its significant physical component. A starved body cannot think clearly, and my mental illness did not begin to dissipate until my brain could begin healing itself. Even after the body and brain have been fed, it takes time and hard work to undo the lies that we begin to believe when our body is starved and our decisions are being made entirely from a place of mental illness. The recovery process is long and arduous, but it is entirely possible.

Three years later, I still struggle to rid myself of all my disordered thoughts, but I have managed to build a wonderful life that is truly worth living. Although mental illness may be something with which I struggle for quite some time, I'm not willing to let it keep me from living the life that I want. With determination, strong supports and openness to change, I believe that anybody can create and live a life that brings joy.

Before I experienced this terrifying reality myself, I never would have imagined that it were possible. I was an excellent student pursuing a degree in social work. I had a fantastic group of friends, and I thought that severe mental illness was not something that would directly affect me. Yet, despite all this, I found myself in the grips of an eating disorder that made me feel absolutely insane.

I now realize that anybody, at any time, can experience mental illness. Fortunately, I have also come to learn that recovery from an eating disorder can be a reality and that it is possible to break free from the stigma of mental illness and live a fulfilling life in spite of it.

I posed nude for art and it gave me a whole new perspective

I'm walking around my friend's photography studio in nothing but my skin, discussing the value of 12-year over 18-year Scotch. I set down my snifter after taking a nice, smoky sip and lay beneath the flashbulbs, ready for my nude close-up that will hopefully appear in a Phoenix gallery the following summer.

Now I'm in an Arizona swimming pool the temperature of a Yellowstone hot spring. My wardrobe is a piece of red see-through fabric. The photographer tells me to take a breath and float beneath the surface, stretched out, sun scalding my nipples — all for National Geographic. I submerge. In the silence of the water, I'm David Byrne wondering, "How did I get here?" Just another day at the office.

This, friends, was not always the case. Once upon a time, I wouldn't let my mother see me naked climbing out of the shower. My mother. She cleaned my diapers, yet seeing my adult boobs was too much?

Unlike many of my cohorts, I kept my clothes on in college. I wasn't sexually active. Despite how many men hit on me in bars and how many times I heard I was smoking hot, I didn't believe it. I thought I was The Chubby One — and nobody wants to see The Chubby One naked.

More: Woman told she was 'too big' to wear a bikini has the last laugh

Except I wasn't actually chubby, and people did actually want to see me naked. After college, one of my best girlfriends asked if I would do a boudoir shoot for her to help build up her portfolio. I agreed, as long as she supplied me with beer and cigarettes for the duration. It was not an entirely nude shoot. I had on underwear and even a man's shirt at one point. Still, it was sexual in nature — or, at least, I felt sexy.

Then I moved to Phoenix, and I guess I gave off some vibe because a female friend soon asked if I'd be willing to take some naked pictures for a presentation she was doing about the power of nudity. I, shockingly, agreed.

Maybe my confidence was at an all-time high because I was married to someone wonderful. Maybe it helped that I didn't feel like The Chubby Girl anymore. Or maybe (and more likely) I'd come to realize being naked was fun.

I did that first nude photo shoot, and my friend's presentation was seen by hundreds of people — and I didn't even blink. Next, I got into bodyscaping, where photographers took abstract photos of my naked form. I moved away from Arizona before I got to have my body painted for a shoot, and yes, I'm still disappointed about it.

Over the course of my nude modeling experiences, I've learned that women come in all shapes and sizes (thank you, Captain Obvious), but that the shape and size doesn't matter one whit. Tall, short, curvy, slim — when reclining beneath those flashbulbs with the entire focus of the room on you, there is no body shaming. There are no judgments. As a nude model, you are there, and you are the center of attention. You are the work of art, and you are worshiped.

More: Gorgeous model is throwing away her career for all the right reasons

I now tell every woman I know to do a nude photo shoot at least once, just to experience that feeling of artistic adoration. There is power in nudity, yes, but not the kind of power you see in strip joints. There is power in revealing yourself and not being afraid. There is power in that level of confidence, and once you've felt the P-O-W-E-R, you'll understand.

Your nudes don't have to hang in galleries or be entered into international competitions. You don't even have to share your nudes with your significant other — although they'll thank you for it. (And yes, nude modeling does make you more comfortable in the bedroom.) You can do a nude shoot just for you, to show yourself you can do it and that you are worthy of admiration because you are. It's not sexual. It's not trashy. It's empowering.

Are you really prepared for your fiancé to have a buck wild bachelor party?

We all love the bachelorette party tradition. Ladies love to get their friends together and have the perfect farewell to the single life party, complete with reminiscing, themed outfits and sometimes a wild party that involves dancing on top of a bar. We can gather our best girlfriends and do anything that comes to mind essentially guilt free. Flirting, dancing on banquettes, seeing male strip shows, dressing scantily and passing the line at the nightclub.

More: 4 Tips for bridesmaids on a budget

We're not the only ones who want to celebrate the occasion on the horizon by getting a little wild. Somehow, not so shockingly, fiancés like that too. Let's be honest: There's often a double standard when it comes to what's acceptable behavior on the part of a bride-to-be versus a groom-to-be. Every woman has a different relationship style — some liberal and some blind with jealous rage, but every man deserves a little party of his own. Should your man's plans include a trip to the strip club, you're going to have to decide pretty quickly how you feel about things. The first — and maybe only — rule of thumb is, without a doubt, be honest.

Before plans are cemented, you need to have a come to Jesus conversation with your significant other. Discuss openly, in advance, where your boundaries lie. If you are not, and know you never will be, OK with exotic dancers in the same room as your man, you need to express this. There's no need to fly off the handle as you try to get your point across — the potential transgression hasn't occurred yet. Have a clear and open conversation as to why this is bothersome, and don't be too closed off to listen to him as well.

More: 6 ways to talk to your partner about the future

There is a second part of this rule of thumb: You need to extend the honesty pact to after the party as well. I don't know about you, but I would rather not have a man who's so concerned about my rules that he would partake in the forbidden festivities and then lie. Lying, in my world, is a major deal breaker. Everything is worse when lying is involved.

Let your fiancé know that he can be honest with you about whatever happens during his party and that you two will work it out however possible. Obviously there are situations in which this wouldn't apply — like cheating. You should be honest as well.

Another thing I like to suggest if you're having some reservations about your boo taking a bachelor party trip with his wild, and maybe single, friends is that you plan your parties to happen at the same time. This will help to ease your mind. How much could you possibly be worrying when you're out with all your besties having the time of your life at your Single Life Grand Finale party?

Plain and simple, be honest and don't be afraid to draw the line. I would suggest being open to letting him choose his own activities. You wouldn't want him sanctioning off all your girlfriends' planned activities either, would you? Think banning bikinis — ouch!

As much as we hate to admit it, it's likely that there are a few tiny, insignificant things about your future hubs that differ from when he's with you to when he's without you. It's going to be OK. Put it out of your mind and have a great time at your own party. Let's face it: Yours will be better than his anyway.

Hargitay shared a photo to her Instagram on Thursday showing her onstage with Vice President Joe Biden. Biden was being honored by the Joyful Heart Foundation, a charity founded by Hargitay, for his work to end domestic violence against women.

"My heart is full of joy and gratitude for @thejhf’s invaluable ally, my friend, and my hero in this work, @VP Biden, whom we honored at the 2016 #JoyfulRevolution Gala last night," Hargitay captioned the photo, showing her presenting Biden with the first-ever Finnegan Award, which is named after his father.

"My father was a graceful, decent, honorable man who taught me that the worst of all sins was the abuse of power — whether it was abuse of economic power, or political power, or physical power. And he raised us all to believe that the cardinal sin of all was for a man to raise his hand to a woman or child, or another man who was subservient to him," Biden said as he accepted the award. "And so to receive this award tonight is one of the greatest honors I’ve had."

He continued, "When I wrote the Violence Against Women Act over 20 years ago, domestic violence was considered a private matter. There was no hotline or special-victims units, and the legal system and public opinion routinely revictimized the victim. I became convinced that if we pulled back the mask on this epidemic that occurred in the country, we can begin to not only change the laws, but we could change lives."

Hargitay, whose role on SVU tackles issues surrounding violence against women on a regular basis, has long been an advocate for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

You might want to sit down for this: Lisa Vanderpump could leave RHOBH

Most of the original women of RHOBH are long gone, but no matter how much the show changes, viewers can take solace in knowing that Lisa Vanderpump will always be on hand to share her wit and fawn over adorable puppies. Or at least, viewers used to be able to count on Vanderpump returning to the Beverly Hills battlefield. All bets are off now, as the queen bee is rumored to be ditching the show that made her famous.

More: Lisa Rinna's RHOBH strap-on confession says nothing about her honesty

Vanderpump recently hinted at the possibility of a departure in response to an outraged conversation on Twitter. The super fans involved in this discussion were disappointed with the poor treatment Vanderpump suffered this season, and they claimed that she would be better off without the likes of Lisa Rinna and Eileen Davidson in her life. Vanderpump seemed to agree, but she also appeared reluctant to leave, in part because the show has been such an important part of her life. She added that, while no final decisions have been made, she is definitely having second thoughts about her continued involvement in the Real Housewives world.

Lisa Vanderpump season 7 tweet

Lisa Vanderpump season 7 tweet

If Vanderpump does leave, it certainly would not be the first time that an original woman from the Real Housewives said adios to Bravo. NeNe Leakes shocked us all last year when, after years of claiming to be finished with reality TV (and always returning for more), she finally backed off and became a mere guest on The Real Housewives of Atlanta. If Vanderpump's recent musing is any indication, Leakes may have launched a new trend in departures.

More: Brandi Glanville's return to RHOBH was awkward and unnecessary

Although some shows have benefited greatly from cast shakeups, RHOBH is clearly not one of them. Season 6 has largely been deemed the worst season yet, and according to many, it's all because of Lisa Rinna. Given the fallout from this disaster of a season, it wouldn't be surprising if Rinna's continued involvement in the series convinced Vanderpump to leave. If that happens, a lot of viewers will probably ditch the show as well. It just won't be the same without Vanderpump's snark, and it could be a hell of a lot worse if Rinna's given any more than her already inordinate amount of screen time.

Someone in Peachtree City, Georgia, had a very interesting day. The Walking Dead actors Norman Reedus and Steven Yeun witnessed a car accident near their film set and called the police. How's that for a silver lining?

TMZ reports that the injuries were fairly minor, but the actors waited for paramedics to arrive nonetheless.

For The Walking Dead fans, Reedus and Yeun's good deeds could also mean a major spoiler alert for the show. When we last left their characters Daryl and Glen, it was unclear whether they would make it to next season. Spotting Reedus and Yeun on set is a fantastic sign... unless they're shooting flashbacks. As Entertainment Weekly asks: Does this mean Daryl and Glen are alive? Ironically, Reedus and Yeun's help in saving a life could mean spoiling their characters' lives on the show. Whoops!

According to local Georgia news channel WTOC, Reedus was acting like a true gentleman. "It looked like he was trying to help everybody, kind of calm everybody," said onlooker Mikail Turan. 3 ways to choose the perfect affordable summer camp for your kids

$
0
0

Day camp or residential camp? Recreational camp or specialty camp? These are just some of the many decisions parents face when selecting a summer camp for their children. Most summer camps begin registering students as early as January or February, so if you have not yet selected a program for your student, you may feel panicked or stressed. Luckily, some summer camps are still accepting participants, and your child can certainly still enjoy her experience if the fit between program and student is a great one. How can you ensure this correctness of fit?

More: 5 Essential skills a child learns from playing with water

1. Tailor your initial search to your child's interests

Even a cursory Google search can unearth a staggering number of summer camps. The breadth of these options can be overwhelming, which is why it can be helpful to frame your search not by location, but by your student's interests. For example, is your child comfortable with the idea of sleeping, learning and playing away from home for an extended period of time? If she is, an overnight (or residential) camp may appeal to her.

Many overnight camps offer programming that is subject-specific, such as horseback riding or marine biology. Residential camps with varied programming also exist. If your student would rather remain close to home, her academic and extracurricular interests can still — and, in fact, should — form the basis of your initial summer camp research.

More: 4 springtime writing exercises to do with your kids

2. Hone your short list of summer camps with budget in mind

Several factors influence the cost of summer camp. Overnight camps, for instance, are typically more expensive than day camps because they include food and lodging. Themed programs that require specialized equipment, such as laboratory equipment for a chemistry day camp, are also generally costly.

When determining the price of each summer camp that you and your child are interested in, be sure to include all hidden and optional costs, such as admissions fees on field trips, camp T-shirts, and extended-day care in the mornings or afternoons. While some programs may offer care from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., only 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. may be reflected in the base cost. Finally, disregard any summer camps that are no longer appealing or that are outside your budgeted allowance.

3. Investigate summer camp specifics to make your final choice

Once you have narrowed your options to three or four programs, it may be helpful to focus on the smaller details when making your final decision. For instance, if you are weighing several academic summer camps, you might ask about the qualifications of the instructors. Are they professors or school teachers? Are they graduate students or current college students who are majoring in the subject? Similarly, if your student has a severe food allergy, what preventative and emergency measures are in place? Like the other parts of this process, what you deem to be most important will drive your investigation, and no two searches will look exactly the same — even if the two searches are for two siblings. Good luck!

I applaud Megan Fox for saying no to porno-like roles and taking back her body

"In show business, women who are lucky enough to find employment are asked to do only two things in every role they ever play: take your shirt off and cry.” So said David Mamet, playwright, essayist, screenwriter and film director, to actress Nancy Balbirer when she was a student at NYU Drama School. It impressed her so much that she made it the title of her 2009 memoir, Take Your Shirt Off and Cry: A Memoir of Near-Fame Experiences.

I don’t know how today’s female entertainers feel about the crying part, but stunning actress and mom Megan Fox has joined longtime clothes-on advocate and style icon Sarah Jessica Parker in now refusing nude scenes or sex scene parts, or as Fox called them in an interview with The Sun, “near-pornographic” scenes. She added, “There are just certain things boys should never see their mothers do.”

More: All signs point to a fresh start for Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green

I respect her choice, and believe she is taking her children into consideration, but also using them as a valid excuse to get out of doing something, like eye-candy parts, that she never really wanted to do in the first place. My guess is that if Fox wanted to get into movies where she rolled around in bed with a male performer and had him fondling as well as kissing her breasts, she would have gone directly into the skin flick industry.

There are still plenty of actresses to fill Fox’s void. There are a lot of women in film who, unlike me, have enviable bodies and the confidence to show them off. They may even truly believe that nudity is important for the character being played. Although an argument can be made that it is their career and body to do with as they choose, I still wonder if it's really a choice. Or do they think that if they turn down the racy role and the direction to take off their shirt, and everything else, they will not get hired?

More: No nude scene for Hailee Steinfeld

Have actresses ever used nudity to their advantage? Just check out Sharon Stone in Harper's Bazaar when she showed her industry what 57 looks like. Or look to the other glossies for young adults exploring their sexy side as a way to announce they are no longer tweens and are ready for more challenging roles.

I hope that Megan Fox's decision will afford her the opportunity to play characters that now show off her acting chops. Whether her new stand works out for her or not, I admire her willingness to risk limiting her opportunities and fame. This no-nudity mindset is just a component of a bigger movement by actresses to not do what they are not comfortable with, such as also not being retouched, as protested recently by Meghan Trainor in her latest video, Rumer Willis in Vanity Fair and Kerry Washington in Adweek.

More: Anne Hathaway reveals: "I don't get hung up on nudity"

If one actress goes against convention, she's "difficult" and "ruining her career." But when female entertainers ban together, changes will happen. If not, then those who make movies and those in the media will have something to cry about when actresses won't work with them.

How do you feel about the extent nudity goes to in movies?

Jermaine Jackson is ready to be an uncle. In a new interview in People, he gushed about his sister Janet Jackson's pregnancy, offering the first family confirmation that she is expecting. Big brother isn't afraid to get down and dirty with the diapers, and we have a feeling it won't be too long until he gets a call for babysitting duty.

Jermaine, who's 61 years old, can't seem to get over the fact that his sister is old enough to have a baby. “My sister Janet is my baby," he told the mag at a gala in Los Angeles. "She is fine but she’s having a baby. A baby having a baby. We look at her like our little baby and now she’s grown and having a baby. “I hope she’s having a girl,” he continued. “We need more girls in the family. There are too many boys.”

John Stamos sends a big F-you to Fox after Grandfathered cancellation

TV networks went on a cancellation rampage this week, and John Stamos' hotness could not save his show from getting the ax.

Over a dozen prime-time series will be no more after this round of cancellations, including Stamos' sitcom Grandfathered. He won't exactly need to file for unemployment since he still has his gig producing Fuller House (with the occasional guest appearance), but judging from his social media posts, he is still pretty unhappy about the situation.

Are you one of the few and the proud who don't have a crush on Drake? If so, I may have a game changer for you: his laugh. The rapper is at 30 Rock while he gears up to host Saturday Night Live this weekend, so naturally he stopped by for a game of Faceketball with pal Jimmy Fallon. Prepare yourself to watch two grown men play basketball on each other's faces.

More: You dating Drake or Leonardo DiCaprio? Please make up your mind, Rihanna

Naturally, these two can't get enough of this game — Drake even gets to play with mini Toronto Raptor-colored basketballs — and they're laughing hysterically the whole time. For someone who's followed Drake's career for years, I can't believe I've never heard this man laugh. His laugh sounds like a sound box that should go inside a Build-a-Bear, not a multimillionaire rapper whose album just broke a record for streaming. But isn't that why we love him?

In the delightful segment, Fallon and Drake also play with a mini Drake and put it on a coffee cup, a basketball and even Drake himself. Don't you just love a man who can make fun of himself? Drake fans, you'll be proud: He wins Faceketball by full-on destroying Fallon's basket.

My son wanted to know how to make his girlfriend feel good, so I told him

I was a horny kid. I know it's not good manners to talk openly about things like this, but it’s true. From the time I was 5, I had no qualms about sticking my fingers up my lady parts because it felt good. By 9, I had mastered masturbation (thank you bathtub faucet), and by 13, I became sexually active. I didn't have a lot of guidance in the area of sex and relationships, and no one to talk to when I discovered intimacy.

When I became a mother, my first instinct was to protect my children from making the mistakes I did (too many lovers, too young, too reckless). At first, I warned them to avoid sex until marriage, but somewhere along the line I realized I was being a complete hypocrite. Why would I expect them to have unrealistic attitudes about sex when I myself didn’t practice what I preached?

By the time my sons hit puberty, I’d changed my tune. I decided that above all else, I wanted an honest, loving relationship with my sons about all topics, including sex. What I hoped was that my sons would see physical intimacy as a valuable experience in a committed relationship.

I didn’t want my children to feel ashamed about their emerging sexuality or feel like they had to lie or hide their behaviors (within reason, I also taught them about personal privacy). Most importantly, I wanted a different outcome for my children than what I had, and so I had to be willing to try something different.

I made sex an easy-to-approach topic. I didn’t judge or shame my sons when they brought the subject up. If asked, I spoke frankly and honestly with my children about whatever they wanted to know. In our family, sex is treated as normally as eating and sleeping. Just like one wouldn’t eat something poisonous, or sleep while driving, my boys wouldn’t have unprotected sex, either. My husband and I have made it a point to teach our sons that protected, consensual sex can be a positive, healthy experience.

Like me, my sons expressed a certain natural joie de vivre when it came to their sexuality, and it was no shock when my eldest son, then 16, began a physically intimate relationship with his long-term girlfriend.

A year after their relationship started, my son and I found ourselves in a deep discussion about animals and nature, which then led to the topic of sex. My son told me that he and his girlfriend were intimate a few times a week, and then, out of the blue shared a concern he had about not pleasing her.

“I’ve tried to give her an orgasm but I don’t know how. It never works,” he said.

He was 17 and looking to me for support, and because I had taught him that it was OK to speak about sex, he felt safe talking to me about his performance worries. I’ll be honest; it was even a little weird for me at first. I’m not a sex therapist or some expert in the field of human sexuality. I’m just a mom who wants to give my sons a strong, healthy foundation for adulthood, and open communication is one facet of that journey, in my book.

So, I took a deep breath and went with it.

“Alright, well, girls typically don’t orgasm just from penetration alone,” I explained. Yes, I felt my face get red. I know I said I’ve fostered an open dialogue about sex with my kids but even I didn’t know how to navigate this uncharted territory. “Generally speaking, girls need clitoral stimulation to orgasm.”

“Like a dildo?” my son asked.

“Not necessarily. A dildo is just a fake penis, where as a vibrator, which some dildos have, is meant for stimulating the clitoris. Oral sex is another way to do that, but the focus needs to be on the clitoris for her to climax.”

Yep. I said all of that in my kitchen to my teenage son. And, I kept a straight face

I reminded him of the need to have safe sex and also, to talk to his girlfriend about what she liked specifically.

“Listen to her and let her show you what works for her body. That’s the best way to figure it out,” I advised.

Our conversation shifted to more “normal” stuff like what I was making for dinner that night and whether or not my son had homework. I was happy with how I handled my son’s dilemma and proud that he felt like he could talk to me about a subject most people are too embarrassed to discuss.

I know plenty of parents reading this will either be grossed out or think I am the worst parent imaginable. For those of you who feel it’s reprehensible to be open minded and talk truthfully with your children — that’s your call. Your kids are still going to have sex at some point in their lives, and studies show that abstinence-only education is the least effective form of curbing teen sexual behavior.

I’m happy to report that my son, who is now a legal adult, is still with the same girl (it’s been three years), is about to graduate high school and go to college, is an Eagle Scout and has not had an STD or gotten anyone pregnant. He also isn’t afraid to get help when he has a problem. That makes every uncomfortable discussion worth it, in my book.

What drama? Kelly Ripa & Michael Strahan were adorable on his last day

Live! producers were so eager to get Michael Strahan off the show that they didn't even let him finish his good-byes before heading to commercial.

Kelly Ripa plastered on a smile and made nice on Strahan's last show, giving her co-host some fabulous parting gifts, including a framed photo of the pair, a photo album and a pair of bronzed high heels he wore on a Halloween episode.

"We couldn't be prouder of you," she said. "You have given us so much joy in the morning, from your smile to your sense of humor to your horrible French accent. We really are so, so proud of you. We've achieved so much together, and I look forward to watching you every morning and seeing what else you achieve."

More: Kelly Ripa can't fool us with a thinly veiled slam against Michael Strahan

Very nice — but when Strahan tried to say his own good-byes, he was unceremoniously cut off like a Best Documentary winner at the Oscars.

"I just want to say, this is very bittersweet to me, and I just want to say thank you to everybody," he began. "And it's been so overwhelming with the response that we've had over the past four years, and I have loved this show. And it means the world that you give us an hour of your day, and what you don't realize is, we get more from that hour than you, really."

Strahan continued, "And we sit in front of a live audience who is always, I say during our commercial breaks, are the third co-host of the show. The energy that they bring really makes this show work. And we have an amazing staff here from the producers to the staff to the crew that make sure..." And cue the music playing him off.

More: We're secretly hoping Kelly Ripa lets Michael Strahan have it on Live!

Ouch. At least Strahan was able to continue after the cameras were off, in front of the studio audience, and Ripa made sure to give him a bear hug for good measure.

What do you think Ripa is saying to him that their mics didn't pick up? Perhaps she said, "I don't care what Gelman said. If you ever set foot on this set again, I will cut you."

The entire CSI franchise might as well die now that CSI: Cyber is canceled

So, this is it. CBS, a chronic offender in canceling good dramas young and old, has nixed CSI: Cyber after its sophomore season. And thus ends the long-running, beloved CSI franchise, according to several published reports.

While I did not watch the first shows in the franchise — the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami and CSI: NY — I did watch the last and final incarnation. This smart show, starring Patricia Arquette, Ted Danson and James Van Der Beek, covered high-tech crimes that could happen in our modern world, no matter how far-fetched they may seem on the show at times. Plotlines included perps who shut down subway systems and a hospital as part of a murder plot. The FBI agents raced against the clock to find the offender before anyone else got hurt.

More: Another '90s heartthrob joins the CSI: Cyber cast

The talented and gorgeous Arquette anchored the show with her bold, tenacious but gentle character, head honcho Avery Ryan. Oscar winner Arquette has the sort of fan base that would attract devotees, myself included, to a new show simply because she stars in it. Arquette also deserved to star in a new show after her successful seven-season run as Allison DuBois on Medium, which started on NBC and moved to CBS for its last two years.

More: Patricia Arquette stole the show with her pro-woman Oscar speech

Though I may not have gotten around to regularly watching the earlier CSI shows, I certainly respect the franchise as a pop culture phenomenon that lasted 16 years overall. Shows don't last that long without a lot of fans and a lot of virtues. The CSI shows gave viewers a behind-the-scenes view, though fictionalized, of how law enforcement examines little details like DNA evidence in order to solve a murder. Surely the episodes could be fascinating.

Now, CBS had a grand opportunity to continue the franchise with an ultramodern incarnation in CSI: Cyber.

More: CSI: Cyber — Patricia Arquette explains why the spinoff is more relevant

Unfortunately, CBS chose to kill CSI: Cyber. The network is responsible for the final CSI victim: the show itself. And it may as well just end the series, because you can't replace or equal the CSI: Cyber cast.

That is a shame. May this iconic series go down in television's hall of fame, and may Arquette soon find another good series in which she can star.

Calm down, people, The Amazing Race winners crossed the finish line fair and square

Season 28 of The Amazing Race has come to a close and the winners crowned.

Throughout the entire season, which featured social media celebrities and Insta-famous folks, favorite teams have trended on Twitter based on their cult followings and their various social media accounts.

Team Tyler and Korey has been a fan favorite from the first episode. Tyler Oakley and Korey Kuhl had arguably the largest pre-Race fan club, and as they continued to do well episode after episode, their fan base only grew. With a total of five first-place finishes, Oakley and Kuhl were a shoo-in for first place overall.

More: The Amazing Race takes a cutthroat turn — and we love it

But in a stunning turn of events, unexpected winners were crowned king and queen of the latest season. The aptly named Dancers took home the first-place win and $1 million, shocking fans a little but mostly just pissing everyone off.

One of the most reviled teams of this season, Dana Borriello and Matt Steffanina have brought out some of the worst vitriol seen in reactions to The Amazing Race.

Most of the harsh criticism has been weighed against the feisty, opinionated and quick-tempered Borriello. She's been called a drama queen, mental, a brat and much worse. During a particularly terrible meltdown, the tweets against her were just downright uncalled for.

More: The Amazing Race's Dana Borriello shouldn't be shamed for her meltdown

So when Dana and Matt pulled through all the fighting and bickering to win it all, the ride-or-die fans of Tyler and Korey were not happy about it.

And while most people were sad that their favorite team didn't win, they did finally concede and gave begrudging, half-hearted congratulations.

Then there were those who were happy for Steffanina but thought that fiancée Borriello didn't deserve praise.

Excuse me while I take two minutes to roll my eyes at these people. Despite having a fiery temper and, yes, yelling at Steffanina a little bit, Dana did pull her own weight, did she not? She did her fair share during roadblocks and detours. She contributed just as much as any other team member on any other team, and she deserves just as much praise as her counterpart.

More: Finally The Amazing Race is getting heated

This final episode proved that Dana and Matt can work together, that their relationship might be more than the first catfights you've been seeing on screen and that, fair and square, they won the last leg and the million dollars.

Borriello was undeniable in that final challenge, flying through it like it was nothing, and to deny her the congratulations she earned as much as Steffanina is downright despicable.

Congratulations to the new winners of The Amazing Race — both Dana and Matt.

Young Shark Tank entrepreneur is a winner despite not scoring a deal

When adults shake their heads and mutter, "Kids these days," they're clearly not referring to the youngsters on Shark Tank. Tonight's episode featured yet another very ambitious teen who has accomplished more in a few short years than most of us have in the past decade.

More: Shark Tank is better when the Sharks offer advice, not insults

Rachel Zietz isn't old enough to drive a car, and yet she's already a huge business success. She's also smart and athletic and the type of person everybody in high school wanted to emulate. Like many of the young entrepreneurs on Shark Tank, she didn't just launch a business for the sake of making money — she pursued her chief passion in life. Obsessed with the sport of lacrosse, Zietz decided to use her expertise to make training more effective for fellow athletes. Her efforts have led to early profitability for Gladiator Lacrosse, a rebounder that fills an important niche and is thus in high demand.

Usually, an ambitious young woman such as Zietz would have no problem scoring a deal from the Sharks. A good pitch, a successful company with a bright future... what do they have to lose? Unfortunately, Gladiator Lacrosse may have been too successful for Shark Tank, as the Sharks seemed reluctant to get in the way of a business that appears to be running so seamlessly.

More: Inspiring Shark Tank baker taught me the power of persistence

The other big concern among the Sharks was that they just didn't understand Zietz's niche. That's fair; one of the main premises of Zietz's company is that she knows lacrosse inside and out. The Sharks seemed concerned that an outside player might harm her credibility, which is a crucial component of her success thus far.

Zietz was clearly disappointed by the lack of a deal, but at least she received very positive feedback. If nothing else, she can take solace in knowing that the show has given her a huge marketing boost.

Although the Sharks didn't invest in Gladiator Lacrosse, they made it abundantly clear that they approve of Zietz and her entrepreneurial endeavors. They encouraged her to continue to set a good example for other teenagers who wish to one day start their own businesses. With or without the Sharks, Rachel Zietz is one impressive teen — and she has a very bright future ahead of her.

The Vampire Diaries finale was so heartbreakingly romantic I can't stand it

The Vampire Diaries Season 7 has admittedly had its ups and downs, but tonight's finale was so good in so many ways that it was definitely the cherry on top of the sundae.

More: The Vampire Diaries' Caroline & Stefan just need to get back together already

There were so many ups and downs, near-deaths and touching moments that, yeah, I cried. I'm woman enough to admit it. I needed that tissue box and the wine to keep on coming tonight, and it was glorious.

First of all, let's talk about Benzo's most romantic moment yet. Granted, Bonnie almost staked him in the heart... but it was completely touching nonetheless.

"Wait, Enzo's still alive? I thought I waited long enough," Damon (Ian Somerhalder) of course, pipes in with comedic relief after the tension faded.

And then, of course, there was Alaric's confession to Caroline, and her return to Stefan's arms.

"I lied earlier. There was a thaw," Caroline told him, which obviously led to the kiss we've all been waiting for. Yes! Yes! And yes!

More: Buckle up, The Originals fans — Season 3 is bringing more death and heartbreak

Plus, Alaric assured Caroline that the two of them, with their twins, would always be a family — even if (and when) Caroline chose Stefan (Paul Wesley).

Can we take a moment to appreciate the man that is Alaric? The show had better give him a woman of a woman in Season 8. Jo was awesome! Until she died. He deserves someone that sees him for the gem he is. I hope he finds the girl of his dreams — finally — in Season 8.

But the moment that really had me sobbing was Matt's big moment with Penny's maybe ghost.

I definitely didn't expect this to be the one that got the tears flowin', especially because I've been pretty over Matt this season. Still, seeing him pinned under the dashboard of a car was enough for me to realize that getting out of Mystic Falls was the best decision he could ever make.

I'm sad to see him leave the show, but I also think those final scenes he was given showcased the importance of him moving forward, and that was a beautiful moment to witness.
