The People v. O.J. Simpson highlights huge problem in the justice system

Tonight's episode of American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson felt more like an episode of Serial, and I loved every minute.

More: 7 ways The People v. O.J. Simpson brings new life to an old case

Here's the thing (and I've said this before), this show isn't so much about whether or not Simpson is guilty. Rather, the show serves to highlight the issues in the country then and now, the relations between people and the court system at the time that led to Simpson's exoneration.

And tonight's episode, titled "A Jury in Jail," dropped the most poignant bomb yet because it shows the trial, at its core, was utterly flawed because the jurors weren't in a position to adequately do their job and make a just decision.

Rather, the jury members themselves lived in a prison of their own during the eight excruciating months the trial dragged on for.

And they weren't just up in some cushy hotel sipping Mai Tais between arguments. They were strictly monitored.

Not only were these the days before Facebook, Netflix and iPhones, but jurors weren't even allowed to watch TV or read books unless they had been preapproved by officers and deemed "appropriate."

The only reason I can begin to imagine how torturous that must have been for these people is because the show did such a brilliant job of showing just what a hell it was to be so disconnected from the world.

More: How American Crime Story Season 1 will affect the #BlackLivesMatter movement

By the time these poor people were actually expected to make a decision about Simpson's guilt or innocence, they had been through more than any people should expect for doing their civic duty.

Juror turnover was rampant. Apparently, one guy was dismissed because he once took a picture with Simpson. Another was excused after it was discovered he was arrested for kidnapping. And a woman was dismissed because it was revealed that she had lied about being the victim of domestic violence.

As if that didn't add to the paranoia these jurors must have felt, it was all enhanced with rumors that there were cameras filming them in their hotel rooms and reports that white jurors were being treated better than the black ones.

It got so bad that Judge Ito put the trial on hold for a couple of days after the jurors revolted.

The scary part of this jury spotlight is that it doesn't appear this case caused much change in the juror treatment during a trial. The United States still has relatively the same process of selection and sequestering for jurors in high-profile cases.

It definitely doesn't inspire much hope that the 12 people selected because they were deemed to be in their right mind will still be in that state of mind months later when they are expected to make a decision about a person's life and the lives s/he may or may not have affected.

More: American Crime Story digs up memories of the O.J. Simpson trial

Personally, it makes me scared for the state of our court system. And it could also explain why so many people are wrongfully convicted and, as Simpson proves, maybe vice versa. According to The Guardian, 4.1 percent of death row inmates in the United States are innocent. Meaning about 200 people currently incarcerated are sentenced to die for crimes they didn't commit.

Maybe we should stop putting the focus on the evidence so much and start looking at the system in place to convict. While 4.1 percent is far from a majority, it's enough to suggest some big changes are needed. And The People v. O.J. Simpson gave me enough food for thought tonight that I think those changes may need to start with jury selection and treatment.

Where do you think the biggest problem in the court system lies?

3 signs your migraine is something more serious

Saying migraines are "just a headache" is like saying Mariah Carey is "just a singer." But the thing is, although migraines are horribly painful, the majority of the time they aren't indicative of any larger health problem, says Dr. Paul Michael, an oncologist with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, a practice within the US Oncology Network.

More: Alarming facts about migraines and millennials

Still, while you're laying in a dark room feeling like your head is about to explode, it's totally natural to wonder if your headache is really something worse. And it can definitely be hard to tell when there's a problem, especially when you're in pain. So Dr. Michael has a few tips to help you tell the difference between horrible head-splitting pain and horrible head-splitting pain that requires medical attention.

When is your migraine just a migraine?

A lot of people automatically think "brain cancer" when they get bad head pain, but Dr. Michael says migraines are not a typical symptom of a brain tumor, nor is there any research linking migraines to an increased risk of any cancer. (But, he says, people prone to migraines do have a higher risk of heart disease as they age, so you should stay on top of your checkups.)

If your headache always happens soon after certain activities, such as eating a big meal, drinking wine, working on the computer or watching TV for long periods of time; coincides with your menstrual cycle; or if it goes away after a few hours, then it's most likely nothing to worry about, Dr. Michael says.

More: Migraines: 11 ways not to treat a headache

When is your migraine possibly something worse?

There are three red flags to look for when determining if your migraine is more than a migraine, Dr. Michael says.

  1. Does the pain wake you up in the middle of the night? If you feel pain so severe it wakes you from sleep, then the pressure from lying down could mean that there is a tumor or something else serious.
  2. Is the pain chronic? Pain that lasts day and night without stopping is worrisome, particularly when it goes on longer than three days.
  3. Does it cause any mental or physical changes? A headache that results in noticeable personality changes (such as heightened anxiety or aggression) or physical changes (such as weakness in your arms or legs) is a serious problem.

Any of these three signs would necessitate an immediate call to your doctor's office. Dr. Michael adds that if you are vomiting uncontrollably, lose vision suddenly or the pain suddenly gets super intense, then you should skip the phone call and go straight to the emergency room.

Little Women: LA bachelorette party stirs up some major drama

When the women of Little Women: LA throw a bachelorette party, they make sure to make the most of it. Unfortunately, the drama that is good for TV is not always good for friendship. The women got together to celebrate Briana Renée’s bachelorette party, but instead of celebrating her, two women stole the focus for themselves.

Great friendships are built on a foundation of attention hogging and ruined parties, after all.

More: Little Women: LA's Tonya Banks dishes on the value of friendship

In this exclusive sneak peek of the newest episode, the women are sitting around talking when Christy McGinity Gibel announces she has some big news. She tells the women that her and her husband have decided to adopt. The women all congratulated her, but she was quickly shoved out of the spotlight when Elena Gant revealed she was expecting not one but two babies.

As you can imagine, Renée wasn’t totally excited that her friends picked her bachelorette party to announce these huge milestones. Her annoyance with her friends was totally obvious and she couldn’t even pretend to be excited for her friends.

More: Little Women: LA's Terra and Tonya talk to Briana about Matt (VIDEO)

The most hilarious part came when Gibel decided that it was rude of Gant to steal her thunder, completely oblivious to the fact that that’s what she’d done to Renée first. It’s fascinating that no matter how many reality TV shows end up on air, casting directors still manage to find more oblivious and selfish people.

Although it’s always great to hear when a friend is expanding their family, especially if they’ve faced struggles with it, you never expect them to do it while at an event in your honor. That seems like friendship 101.

More: Little Women: LA's Terra and Brittney take the drama with them to Hawaii (VIDEO)

We'll all have to tune in at 9/8c tonight to find out if a fight erupts between all the women after this talk. I'll probably put my money on yes.

Also, be sure to stick around to check out the premiere of Little Women: Terra's Little Family right after at 10/9c on Lifetime.

6-year-old girl failed by court that removed her from foster family

I’m angry… and a little teary. I just read a story in the New York Daily News about a 6-year-old girl in California who was taken from her foster family because of her ethnicity. She’s being sent to live with relatives in Utah that she doesn’t know based on the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) — a 1978 federal law designed to keep Native America families intact.

More: 12-year-old girl pinches boy's butt, gets smacked with criminal charges

The courts reportedly stated that Lexi would not suffer emotional harm after being taken away from her foster family.

I’m sorry, but I call B.S.

Wait. As an adoptive parent raising kids of a different ethnicity, I call B.S.

Yes, there is probably more to this story than meets the eye. There usually is. As with most emotionally-charged family situations, there are multiple sides to the story along with healthy doses of he-said/she-said and drama, but still, based on my own experience, my heart broke as I saw the images of her being taken from the only family she ever knew.

I remember the day I met my son Zack with an amazing degree of clarity. I can tell you every single nitty gritty detail about that day but the memory that sticks out in my mind the most is how traumatized my new child was by the whole ordeal. Yes, I said ordeal because that’s what it was, through his eyes.

MORE: 35 things kids simply don't need

He’d just turned 2. He’d been living with a foster family since he was 9 months old. They were the only family he knew. It was an international adoption, so the first day I met him was the last day he saw his foster family. I’ll be the first to tell you no adoption is perfect and if there would have been a way to provide my little guy some closure and solace on what was a very traumatic day in his young life, I would have done it.

We played the cards we were dealt and tried to comfort him as best we could.

More: Confessions of an accidental attachment parent

Zack didn’t understand much about what was going on, but he did know that he had a mommy and that I wasn’t her. Looking at the pictures of our first day together brings complicated emotions. Our first pictures together show a terrified child.

That was almost four years ago and my son no longer remembers that day. But, I remember it and I can tell you that without a doubt, my child suffered emotional harm. Yes, our situation is different than this California family. Yes, things are great for us right now and no, no one knows if the trauma at the root of our adoptions will surface again one day. Who knows?

But that 6-year-old girl will remember. And anyone who thinks emotional harm isn’t a factor needs to watch that video of a terrified, screaming child being taken from her home courtesy of a court order.

I get that birth culture is important and I understand the reason the ICWA was put into place almost 40 years ago. But I don’t think anything about what happened with this child in California fits in with the spirit and intent of the ICWA.

You see, I’m raising a child that was taken from his birth culture. My husband and I are Caucasians from an area that’s not very ethnically diverse. Our son is from China and he’s the only Asian child in his class and one of a handful of Asian kids at his school. We understand the importance of cultural and racial identity. I’ve made an effort to educate myself and to educate those around me. We have infused Chinese culture into our everyday lives. Just a few weeks ago, my son got to be the cool kid in class because he was the only one who handed out red envelopes full of “lucky money” to ring in the Year of the Monkey.

I’m not perfect at this. I'm not the same as a Chinese mom. What I don’t know about my son’s birth culture would make a much longer list than what I do know. I don’t think that not being Chinese makes me any less capable of parenting him. I am his mom.

My son has been in my custody about a year longer than Lexi lived with her foster parent. I know this is comparing apples to oranges but having Zack removed from my home because a law favored Chinese parents is unimaginable. It would have been unimaginable a year ago. Or two years ago. Or six months after we brought him home. Or six days.

A piece of Zack will always be different from me, but that’s what makes him special. I can learn about the differences and help him celebrate them, just as Lexi’s foster parents could help her celebrate her tiny little piece of Native American heritage.

As an adoptive parent, reading Lexi's story makes me sad. As a mother, this makes me sad. I can’t make a declaration about the right life decisions for this little girl based on one news article, but I’m going to go out on a limb today and say someone’s calling the wrong shots on this one. As a mom to a child whose ethnicity I don't share, this court's decision just feels wrong to me.

We've all seen Chelsea Handler's artistically nude poses and witnessed her support for the FreeTheNipple movement, so when she flaunts her figure, it's really nothing new, except this latest picture is in special honor of Reese Witherspoon.

Witherspoon celebrated her 40th birthday on March 22, and Handler decided to honor her while posing in her birthday suit — and we have to hand it to her, it's a pretty hilarious photo.

Handler can be seen posing with only long black socks, as she takes a selfie in her bathroom mirror. She captioned the post with a simple, "Happy Birthday @reesewitherspoon." And judging from the comments on the picture, people are really impressed, even if they are jealous that they can't have a picture like this dedicated to them on their own birthdays.

The Catch: 7 things we already know about Shonda Rhimes' new show

1. It will be another juicy crime drama

the catch mireille enos

Like Rhimes' other hits Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder, The Catch has major themes of betrayal, fraud and double lives. It follows the story of Alice Vaughan, a private investigator from Los Angeles, who is unknowingly about to be the victim of fraud by her con artist fiancé, Kieran Booth. But Alice isn't about to let this con go without retaliation, and in between her own cases, she sets out to discover the truth about her fiancé, setting off a dangerous game of cat and mouse.

2. It has a star-studded cast

Mireille Enos (The Killing) will play the lead role of Alice, while Parenthood's Peter Krause will portray her shady fiancé. Sonya Walger is set to play Kieran's criminal wife, Zoe. Meanwhile, Rose Rollins, Elvy Yost, Jay Hayden, Jacky Ido and Alimi Ballard will also costar.

3. It's already had some behind-the-scenes drama

the catch recast

The show underwent some major casting changes after the filming of the initial pilot, with original stars Damon Dayoub and Bethany Joy Lenz (both pictured above) being replaced by Krause and Walger, respectively. In August, the series saw another shakeup when show creator and showrunner Jennifer Schuur abruptly left the series, reportedly due to "creative differences" over the direction of the project.

4. It has a Scandal and Grey's Anatomy vet as a showrunner

Luckily, the series found a good replacement for Schuur following her departure. Allan Heinberg (pictured above), who has previously written and produced for Sex and the City, Gilmore Girls and Rhimes' Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, has since stepped in as showrunner.

Heinberg will bring personal experience to the job. Per Variety, Heinberg was betrayed by someone he was in a 10-year relationship with, so he knows the issue of fraud well. “This was a perfect opportunity to get him to stand up,” Rhimes told Variety of his hiring.

5. It will be packed with shocking twists and cliffhangers

the catch trailer

the catch trailer

As the trailer highlights, the show starts off with one big twist — with Alice's seemingly loving fiancé stealing all her money and turning her perfect life upside down. But that's just the beginning. That sets off an increasingly complicated series of unpredictable turns... not that we'd expect anything less from a Rhimes-produced show.

6. It will showcase a major lighthearted side of Shondaland

the catch2

the catch2

While we can expect all the twists and turns of a TGIT show, The Catch won't be quite as dark as the rest of that night's lineup. Though it deals with serious subject matter, the show boasts a lighter, more playful tone, thanks to Heinberg's revisions. "It’s not a dark, brooding thriller about corrupt people,” Heinberg told Variety. “It’s this oddly fun confection with a really different energy. I think (ABC) responded to that.”

7. It has a lot to live up to

the catch abc
Image: ABC

The Catch faces its fair share of pressure from the lead-up to its premiere. Aside from standing among the acclaimed and widely watched series in TGIT, The Catch has a lot riding on it, in terms of potential network success. ABC has had mixed results with its midseason shows so far this season — Of Kings and Prophets was canceled after just a couple of episodes and The Family has already seen a dip in ratings. Whether The Catch will be able to deliver the hit the network wants remains to be seen, but we have high hopes, given Rhimes' involvement.

The Catch will premiere on ABC on March 24.

Moms needed for largest ever postpartum depression study: How you can help

Perinatal mood disorders affect a large number of women and families in the U.S. According to the CDC, 11 to 20 percent of women who give birth each year have postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms. And yet, there is still so much unknown about these mood disorders, why some women are more prone to experiencing them, yet not others, and how to best help those affected. That is why a new study and its potential impact is so groundbreaking.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine are teaming up with the consortium Postpartum Depression: Action Towards Causes and Treatment (PACT) to launch the largest ever study of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. The study, which will have an international reach, is also one of the first PPD related studies to utilize smartphones to help gather data.

More: The Mamafesto: Moms need mental health checks, and they need them now

Women can access the study via PACT's app "PPD ACT," which is currently available in the App Store as a free download for iOS devices in Australia and the U.S. and will be available soon in the U.K. The app surveys women to identify those who have had symptoms of PPD. Based on survey responses, the app will invite some women to provide DNA samples so that researchers can study the genes of those impacted by PPD.

“Between 12 and 23 percent of women will experience symptoms of depression after pregnancy, and this app will help us better understand why,” Dr. Meltzer-Brody, faculty member of UNC School of Medicine and director of the Perinatal Psychiatry Program at the UNC Center for Women’s Mood Disorders, told SheKnows. She continued, “We hope that women will share their experiences so that we can more effectively diagnose and treat PPD in the future.”

More: What you need to know about adoption and postpartum depression

One of the PPD ACT's partners is Postpartum Progress, an international nonprofit organization that has spearheaded a number of significant initiatives surrounding PPD. Katherine Stone, founder of Postpartum Progress, explained to SheKnows why this app and the resulting data is so important.

"I want to see women have the opportunity to share their experience and their data to help move science forward. You never know what will come from a study like this... are there specific genetic markers? Are there not? What matters to me is that we will, as survivors and those currently struggling, be putting forth the effort to find out. In the end I do hope information is identified that will lead to quicker identification and better treatments, and possibly even prevention. I think it's worth doing what we're doing to see if we can make that happen."

According to the researchers, the app is intended for women 18 years or older who have previously given birth and believe they may have experienced or are currently experiencing signs or symptoms of PPD, such as anxiety, depression, guilt, irritability or extreme sadness. While an iPhone is needed to access the free app, UNC is donating iPads to select perinatal clinics in the U.S. for use by their patients during office visits.

Stone's one message to moms about how they can help? "I think the most important thing is that to get good answers we need more moms. If you had or have PPD or anxiety or psychosis? If you felt it was one of the worst experiences of your life? If you can't stand the idea of having more mothers, future generations of mothers, continuing to have to suffer for months on end as they do now? Download an app. Contribute to the science yourself. Be part of the story of making change."

Why you must keep your dog away from your Easter eggs

More: 15 surprising facts about dogs you should know

Dogs Trust has issued a reminder to dog owners to keep their pooches away from chocolate following a survey that revealed 1 out of 10 pet dogs who have eaten chocolate intended for humans have fallen ill as a result. Of those dogs, 8 percent of them died due to the effects and almost a quarter of them needed urgent treatment from a vet.

Dogs and chocolate warning

Dogs and chocolate warning

If you're a chocolate lover you may find it hard to believe that something so good could cause harm but it contains theobromine, which is perfectly safe for human consumption but extremely toxic to our doggy companions. The darker the chocolate, the greater the amount of theobromine and the greater the risk.

Paula Boyden, the Dogs Trust Veterinary Director, said: "Apart from the risks of obesity and the obvious dangers of eating the foil wrapping, the biggest risk of eating human chocolate is poisoning, resulting in an emergency dash to the vet and sadly even death.

More: 10 facts about puppies even dog people don't know

"We estimate that just 50g of plain chocolate could be enough to kill a small dog, whilst just 400g could kill an average size dog, so we urge people to make sure they keep treats well out of the reach of pesky paws and make sure children don't share their Easter eggs with their furry friends."

Dogs Trust have the following tips for keeping "Chocs Away" from your dog this Easter:

  • Never feed your dog chocolate intended for humans.
  • If your egg is missing and you suspect your dog is the culprit contact your vet straight away.
  • Be aware of the following symptoms: vomiting containing blood, a sore tummy, excessive thirst, excitability, drooling, rapid heart rate and, in severe cases, epileptic-type fits.
  • If your dog is displaying any of these signs take him to your vet without delay.
  • There is no antidote for theobromine poisoning meaning the sooner treatment is started, the greater the chance of recovery.
  • If you want to treat your dog this Easter stick to natural doggy snacks that won't cause harm.

Why you need different lotions for your hands and body

$

0

It seems like a big ole waste. At this very moment, your bathroom medicine cabinet is probably filled with various creams designed to protect your skin — there's a cream with SPF, a night cream with retinol, a body lotion that smells like vanilla and a hand lotion because... hold on a minute, your hands are a part of your body — can't you simply kill two birds with one stone (and save money) by using one lotion for everything below your neck?

Well, actually, no — not unless you're satisfied knowing you'll be short-changing your poor hands, which are incredibly susceptible to dry, tight skin, particularly during the winter months.

More: 7 steps to the ultimate home facial for glowing skin

"Although one cannot generalize, most hand lotions are thicker and more emollient than body lotions," says Dr. Christine Choi Kim, a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist. "There are certainly 'body butters' and thicker body lotions as well. Hand and body lotions, for the most part, could be used interchangeably."

There is one exception to the rule — a caveat that should inspire you to carefully read labels before using your hand cream on your body.

"One exception is that some hand lotions may also have keratolytic (peeling) ingredients such as lactic acid to gently exfoliate as well as moisturize rough skin," Choi Kim says. "Although these formulations could also be used on rough elbows, knees and the bottom of your feet, they may be irritating if used all over the body. Both hand lotions and body lotions may include sunscreen, which is great for daytime protection."

More: What exactly is happening under your skin when you pop a pimple

Some say you can avoid lotion confusion by sticking with what they consider the best product that can add moisture to any part of your body — one you can find in the grocery store: coconut oil.

Miki Spies, a spiritual care giver, credits her soft skin to just that. "I am 48 years old and my skin has never been softer," she says. "A jar of coconut oil costs around six bucks and lasts a long time. When you get out of the shower, lather it on. Apply again before bed."

Bottom line: If you're using natural moisturizers like coconut oil, you may be able to get away with applying them all over your body — hands included. But it isn't recommended that you use hand lotion on the body, nor should body lotion cross over into hands territory unless you've already been blessed with baby-soft hands. On a positive note: You haven't been wasting money all this time — hurray for that!

Joe Giudice's time behind bars will be very different from Teresa's

Bravo couldn't get enough of Teresa Giudice when she was behind bars, but is the network as interested in her husband, Joe?

More: Insider spills on Joe Giudice's last date night with Teresa Giudice

Apparently not. And as Joe gets ready to serve his 41-month prison sentence for fraud charges at the Federal Correctional Institute, Fort Dix, in New Jersey, he is going in without any interest from the network, production sources tell TMZ.

So, you will not be finding out how Joe is coping with being behind bars, and he won't be given the same three-part special that his wife, Teresa, got when she was serving time. In fact, Bravo reportedly has no plans to do anything with Joe, other than film him entering the prison gates on Wednesday — which will air on Season 7 of The Real Housewives of New Jersey.

According to TMZ, Joe will "essentially disappear from sight" during his prison sentence, unless the story line directly affects his wife or four daughters.

Three and a half years is a long time to be apart from your spouse, but if you thought Teresa was going to throw in the towel, you'd be mistaken, because she's reportedly firmly focused on making her relationship work.

The family had a bit of a going away party with 75 loved ones at Blu Alehouse restaurant in Riverdale, New Jersey, on Monday night, Entertainment Tonight reports. According to a source, Joe rented out the back of the restaurant and guests were treated to a feast of steak, pasta and chicken.

"It was a very light and fun night," the source said of the party. "Everyone was laughing and joking. There were a lot of kids running around — everyone brought their kids."

"It was very low-key, private and a lot of fun."

The source also noted that no professional Bravo people were present, and there were no microphones or cameras.

Total Divas' Eva Marie's plan for the rest of Season 5 may change her image

This is an exciting time for Total Divas star Eva Marie, who is set to return to WWE's main roster after a nine-month break. She's put a lot of effort into working up to this big moment — and her hard work has been quite evident on Total Divas.

Unfortunately, while Eva Marie would like to keep the focus on wrestling, drama always seems to follow her. She's a heel in wrestling, but she has just as much of a bad girl persona on Total Divas. However, she's spent much of Season 5 trying to repair fractured relationships with her fellow Divas.

More: Eva Marie reveals her plans to make amends on Total Divas

In an exclusive interview with SheKnows, Eva Marie shared the scoop on her evolving relationships with the gals of Total Divas, as well as her new friendship with Mandy. She has admitted that her chief goal for Season 5 is to focus on honing her craft as a wrestler and to "stay out of the crazy drama, because I had enough of it last season." It hasn't been easy, but she feels she has "done a good job in staying as low-key as possible."

Eva Marie's efforts at reconciliation have been met with varying degrees of success, but she has managed to establish a really strong friendship with the new girl, Mandy. She knows exactly what it's like to be the odd one out, so she can really relate to the show's newest cast member.

"I've been in [Mandy's] shoes, and walking into the lion's den isn't the easiest thing to do, especially being brand-new," Eva Marie said.

She does admit, however, that there's a little selfishness in her fondness for Mandy: "It was great to get a new girl because it means less heat for me."

More: Nikki Bella dishes on the pressure of leading the Divas Revolution (EXCLUSIVE)

Not only can Eva Marie relate to Mandy's plight of being the new girl on Total Divas, she appreciates that Mandy knows exactly what it's like to enter the WWE Universe.

"Her and I have been able to train and do some shows together in NXT. It's always nice to show the Total Divas audience as well as the WWE Universe that... you're not just born a wrestler. You gotta work at it, you gotta train hard. It's not something that happens overnight. Her and I are not from the wrestling world... I wanted to welcome her as best as I possibly can into the situation."

Eva Marie likes to think that she made Mandy's entrance into the WWE Universe and the world of reality TV a little easier, and she'd like to do the same for future Total Divas cast members. She offered a few words of advice to any new girls who might join the show in the future: "Remember why you wanted to be a WWE Diva, remember why you got into this business. Never lose sight of that, no matter what anybody's saying. Never stop. If you want something, keep on going."

Fans can expect Eva Marie to abide by her own advice and keep on going, no matter what drama the other Divas throw her way. She's well on her way to becoming more than the heel of Total Divas — and viewers are excited to watch her journey! What school dress codes should look like

When it comes to dress codes, it's no secret that girls and women usually get the raw end of the bargain. Instead of teaching boys how to comport themselves around young women, many schools are targeting girls and policing their attire, causing many problems all around. With all the issues surrounding them, we just had to hear what our favorite Raging Feminists thought the ideal dress code should be.

What do you think a dress code should say?

"Dear Student,

You are important, you are inherently worthy of respect, and you come to school to achieve. Your clothing should reflect this reality. If you choose clothing that interferes with your learning process, the admin office will provide you with something very uncool to wear for the day that will better allow you to focus on your studies.

Make good choices,

Your School Admins" — Ashley Black

"A dress code should instruct everyone to dress in a way they're most comfortable. It should assure young people their appearance is their own choice and doesn't concern anyone else. Too often, these policies project how OTHERS feel about how an individual appears." — Danielle Corcione

More: School gives girls uniforms, then bans them from wearing them

"Wear clothing that allows you to fully participate in your education, is weather appropriate, and in which you can safely move through, enter and exit the school facilities even in case of emergency."

— A mother

"Honestly I have shut down some sexist parents with 'If my daughter wants to wear a sundress or tank top in August, then she can and she has purple hair so deal with it.' One mother said, 'How do I tell my kid she can't wear super short shorts when the school allows it and her friends do it?' My retort was, 'That's called parenting.' Blurg I hate this issue. Flip side my kid is not wearing heels to school because pain and sprained ankles while you are growing still are not conducive to learning." — Amanda Rose Adams

"I went to a religious Jewish day school with a very strict dress code. Once, one of the teachers warned us 'girls' to stop wearing such large T-shirts because the boys could lean over and at certain angles see our bras. Imagine the body contortions involved for that feat.

The dress code should say... 'Boys. Stop being little invasive brats. Focus on your own lives. When a girl wants to show you her bra — if she wants to show you her bra — it'll be her choice. Now get back to work.'" — Leigh Shulman

"In an ideal world, a dress code should be six words: Be yourself. Be respectful of others." — Sarah Buttenwieser

"If you feel you genuinely must wear clothing with words on it, make sure your words aren't hurtful. Don't wear anything you're going to want to cover up or photoshop when you look at your school pictures in 30 years. And no Axe body spray." — Rowan Beckett Grigsby

"Young women: If you are told by a teacher that the way you are dressed is causing 'arousal' or 'distraction,' please tell us immediately. Adults sexualizing and shaming girls' bodies should not be teaching young people."  — Katharine Heller

"Wear whatever is comfortable for you as long as it doesn't do any of the following:

- Light up.

- Set off smoke alarms.

- Generate sound that could distract from lessons.

- Make you too tall to walk through doors comfortably.

- Contain within its construction any large spikes, blades or anything that could cause irreparable harm to the structure of the school or your classmates.

- Throw fire from any of its extremities." — Seraphina Ferraro

"Drape, fasten or affix coverings (preferably fabric) on your body. And as always, keep your eyes on your own paper. Love, The Administration" — Jen Selk

"This is a school. It is a community for LEARNING. While school administration reserves the right to give advice about clothing to you and your guardians should it distract from your own learning, we trust you to make your best decisions about what to wear on your body that will make it easiest for you to LEARN.

When choosing your outfit for the day, please consider:

1) Will I be able to do my best LEARNING while wearing this?

2) Am I covered enough to work in the science lab AND paint in art class?

3) Will I be warm enough to LEARN?

4) Will I be cool enough to LEARN?

5) Will I be comfortable enough to LEARN?

Please use your best judgment. (When it doubt, ask for help from any member of school administration!)" — Alex Blank Millard

"Your school ensemble should include your brain, but no other weapons are allowed on school grounds." — Meredith Counts

"No logos. Nothing that could potentially be hate speech. Respect the weather. Express yourselves." — Hani Yousuf

"As a raging feminist who is also a member of the DAR, I have no problem with dress codes per se (hey, I love wearing hats and gloves in my free time!), but they've got to be gender neutral. There are a ton of ways to say this: Shorts/skirts/kilts must be two inches above the knee or longer, shirts must be worn at all times, hats must be removed indoors, collars must be open less than 3 inches from the nape of the neck, etc. I think the key is that it should be spelled out enough, and gender neutral enough, that judgments should not be at the discretion of school staff — too much room for personal bias that way!" — Gyda Arber

"Dress codes should be about encouraging a sense of belonging and unity. They should be about making the school easily identifiable in public, but also about being a source of pride and connection for students. At high school, when students are most looking for a tribe, when they’re feeling most unlike the children they were, and not yet the adults they will be, a dress code should be something that gives them a sense of place.

As always, it’s easier to say what school dress codes should not be about. It should not be about dividing people on gender, race, creed or any other superficial measure. And it should definitely not be the source of attributing shame. Schools, all schools, need to get better at designing uniforms and policies that are inclusive and encompassing of all their diverse students. Only then will there be a real sense of belonging." — Asha Rajan

How to make the perfect hard-boiled egg

$

0

'Tis the season for deviled eggs, whether you're making them for Easter brunch or using up the dyed-egg leftovers. But before you get that far, are you boiling your eggs the right way?

Overcooking hard-boiled eggs can lead to the dreaded green ring when you cut them open a few days later. There is one (and only one) tried-and-true method for hard-cooking eggs that will eliminate that unappetizing green ring around the yolk and prevent the smell of sulfur. Oh, and cracked eggs? You can (almost) kiss those goodbye with this method. And though fresh eggs are best for scrambling and frying, eggs that are a few days old will peel much more easily than any egg plucked right from the henhouse.

Perfect hard-boiled eggs

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 6 large eggs (any variety)
  • Water

Directions:

  1. In a large saucepan, place the eggs, and fill the pan with cool tap water at least 1 inch above the eggs. Over medium heat, bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, and then cook for 3 minutes.
  2. Remove from the heat, cover, and let stand 8 minutes. Transfer the eggs to an ice bath, and let stand 15 minutes. Refrigerate up to 3 days.
  3. To peel, gently tap all sides of the egg on a hard surface to crack the shell. Beginning with the air pocket end (the large end), peel away the shell.

Then put those perfectly cooked eggs to good use with this tasty recipe.

Deviled crab-filled eggs recipe

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 6 hard-boiled eggs
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tablespoon capers, chopped
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1/4 cup fennel bulb, julienned
  • 1/4 cup celery, julienned
  • 1 cup lump crabmeat, cooked and cooled
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For garnish

  • Fresh Italian (flat-leaf) parsley
  • Fresh thyme
  • Sesame seeds

Directions:

  1. Slice all the hard-boiled eggs in half across the middle, as shown above. Remove the yolks, and set them aside in a medium bowl. Slice a very small piece off the bottom of each egg white so they stand up straight, and then set them aside.
  2. Add the sour cream, mustard, garlic, thyme, capers, lemon zest and celery salt to the egg yolks. Add the fennel and celery, and gently mix until coated with the sour cream mixture. Taste for seasoning, and add salt and pepper as needed.
  3. Add the crab, and gently fold it into the sour cream mixture until incorporated. Be careful to not shred the crabmeat.
  4. Using a spoon or melon baller, fill the cavities of the white portions of the eggs with 2 heaping tablespoons of the crab mixture. Garnish with thyme, parsley, capers and sesame seeds.

Hard-boiled egg FAQs

Can I add vinegar to the cooking water to prevent the shell from cracking?

Yes, but the vinegar doesn’t really prevent the cracking. As with poached eggs, the vinegar helps to coagulate the egg whites so they don’t roam far from their point of origin. As long as you bring the water up to a boil slowly and gently remove the pan from the heat once it comes to a boil, the eggs should remain crackle free.

The dye from my eggs penetrated the whites. What should I do?

As long as it’s a food-safe dye, eat the eggs as planned. If you need beautiful, bright white eggs for presentation, you’ll have to cook additional eggs and skip the dye.

Sounds delicious, but what’s so devilish about this egg recipe?

The term "deviled" usually refers to anything spicy — mustard, hot sauce, red peppers, cayenne. In this case, it’s Dijon mustard.

I’m a traditionalist. Can I skip the crab and just do a traditional deviled egg recipe?

You bet! In fact, you can fill the hard-boiled eggs with absolutely anything. Try chicken salad, lobster salad, artichoke and spinach dip, guacamole or saffron mayonnaise.

Brandi Glanville reigns as the RHOBH drama queen with her return

The Lyme disease storyline got old a long, long time ago, but The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills just can't seem to move on. Unfortunately for bored viewers, Yolanda Foster's journey will still very much be a part of the show, but, at least, there is another factor mixing things up: Brandi Glanville!

More: Yolanda Foster crossed the line with her children's privacy

Everybody has known for some time that Glanville was set to return as a guest — it was only a matter of time. For a few weeks, Glanville has been hinting at her return on Twitter, and now, finally, she's back!

During last night's episode, she met with Yolanda Foster, who, outside of Kim Richards, she has long thought of as one of her very few real friends in the Real Housewives world.

The two talked about Glanville's dating adventures, Foster's deteriorating relationship with her husband, and, of course, Rinna's poor treatment of Foster. During this chat, Glanville learned all about Rinna's anger about Foster's recent outing with her former RHOBH friends and, of course, she was very upset. She claimed that Rinna's "wig glue" was getting to her.

Later, in a very colorful rant, Glanville made it abundantly clear what she thought of Rinna: "Dear Lisa Rinna, get a f***ing life, eat some food and stop talking about my friends. You have nothing else going on in your life. Hashtag straight jacket; hashtag real friends; motherf***er, get some help."

More: Kim and Kyle Richards finally find their maturity on RHOBH

As annoyed as Glanville was after hearing of what she pegged as Rinna's jealousy, she was even less happy after learning of the Munchausen syndrome accusations. Not only did she let Foster know that she found these accusations absolutely disgusting, but she also shared her anger in a biting Bravo blog post.

According to Glanville, the women are only now questioning Foster's illness because she and Richards are no longer there to keep them in check.

On social media, viewers were mixed in their responses to Glanville's return. A few were more than ready for a new source of drama, but others felt the show would be better off without her stirring the pot.

Rob Kardashian's relationship with Blac Chyna has made a lot of headlines; but for as much bad press as their relationship has attracted, there's also a fair share of positive reports.

More: Rob Kardashian's new relationship is helping him reconnect with Kris Jenner

There is no denying that Chyna has been good for Kardashian's self-esteem, and she has not only made him become less of a social recluse, but also become more focused on his health, and this is something that his mother, Kris Jenner, is grateful for.

"The whole family sees that it's her who brought Rob back," a family insider told Us Weekly, adding, "Kris is so grateful to Blac Chyna for rehabilitating her son."

And the reason for Kardashian's newfound confidence and dedication to a healthier lifestyle could actually be very simple: love.

A friend of Kardashian's told the publication that he "went forever without any girl being interested in him."

But he now seems like a new man, and part of that credit has to go to Chyna. The friend said, "His confidence was shattered for so long, so to have this banging girl all over him has given him a new lease on life."

However, while the Kardashian clan can see that Chyna is doing Rob a lot of good, they are reportedly still hesitant to welcome her to the family — which is not all that surprising given the complicated history between her and Kylie Jenner.

"There's no ill will toward her, but yes, they're cautious because of the Kylie and Tyga situation," a family insider told the publication.

7 reasons Chase Chrisley is secretly the star of Chrisley Knows Best

Anyone trying to follow Todd Chrisley has some pretty big shoes to fill. Todd is successful, witty, caring and a little bit out of his mind. The combination of charm and authenticity gives him a huge personality that's hard to compete with in any room. But if there is one person who can shine Todd, it's his oldest son, Chase.

Chase is also funny, caring and definitely a little crazy just like his dad. But lately, Chase has been stealing the show from his dad. We've got seven reasons Chase may actually be the new star of Chrisley Knows Best.

More: Todd Chrisley reveals dramatic extortion efforts lead by his sister-in-law

1. He's always ready for friendly competition — especially with his sister, Savannah

Chase takes his brother-sister rivalry to a whole new level, and it's always so funny to watch. You can tell he loves annoying his sister, but not too much. Just enough to be considered a good brother. Like when he teases her about how Todd is going to kill her for bringing home a dog all the while helping her hide it.

2. He balances out his dad

He handles Todd's big personality by being understated and calm. It's a perfect balance.

More: Todd Chrisley overreacts in a big way to son's tattoo

3. He's charming in a bad-boy-that-won't-hurt-you kind of way — that's a thing, right?

4. Family is very important to Chase

Even though he is in college and trying to experience all that college has to offer, he's still constantly back at home visiting with his parents and spending quality time with his younger brother.

5. He uses Todd's antics against him

When watching the show, you realize that living under the same roof with a dad as particular as Todd would be pretty exhausting. Watching Chase take advantage of the way his dad acts is one of the highlights in every episode.

6. He is the most down-to-earth Chrisley kid

Julie Chrisley is, by far, the most normal one in the house, but second place goes to Chase.

7. He's got great style

Let's face it. Sometimes Southern style can be over the top, but Chase always manages to look well-dressed and cool. That definitely counts for something.

'Reversing' type 2 diabetes is possible through diet, say experts

More: 7 things you're doing now that may cause diabetes later

The findings, published in the journal Diabetes Care, may give hope to the 2.6 million type 2 diabetes sufferers in the U.K..

Researchers from Newcastle University, the University of Glasgow, and Lagos University carried out the trial, which involved a group of 30 volunteers who had all suffered from diabetes for less than 10 years. They were asked to follow a very low calorie diet (only 600-700 calories per day) for eight weeks, followed by a less radical six-month weight control diet.

At the end of the trial, the average weight loss was two stone and 12 of the patients had reversed their diabetes. Six months later, they were still free of the condition, reported the Mirror.

Although the volunteers lost weight, by the end of the trial they were still classed as overweight or obese. However, they had lost enough weight to remove the fat out of the pancreas and facilitate normal insulin production.

Professor Taylor, from Newcastle University, said: "What we have shown is that it is possible to reverse your diabetes, even if you have had the condition for a long time, up to around 10 years. If you have had the diagnosis for longer than that, then don’t give up hope — major improvement in blood sugar control is possible.

"The study also answered the question that people often ask me — if I lose the weight and keep the weight off, will I stay free of diabetes? The simple answer is yes."

More: Type 2 diabetes in teens: Out of control?

Professor Taylor said the results supported the theory of a Personal Fat Threshold, where fat can be stored around the body, but above a certain level it is deposited in the liver and pancreas, where it causes damage and can hinder proper insulin production in the pancreas.

"Interestingly, even though all our volunteers remained obese or overweight, the fat did not drift back to clog up the pancreas," he said. "If a person gains more weight than they personally can tolerate, then diabetes is triggered, but if they then lose that amount of weight then they go back to normal.

"Individuals vary in how much weight they can carry without it seeming to affect their metabolism — don’t forget that 70 percent of severely obese people do not have diabetes. The bottom line is that if a person really wants to get rid of their type 2 diabetes, they can lose weight, keep it off and return to normal. This is good news for people who are very motivated to get rid of their diabetes."

While the NHS said it found the science of a Personal Fat Threshold "interesting", it pointed out that the results are from a “small group of highly motivated volunteers”, which called into question how many people would be able to follow the diet and keep the weight off after it.

The NHS recommends consulting your GP before trying a very low calorie diet, and warns of the long-term health implications of "yo-yo" dieting (losing a lot of weight on a crash diet then putting it straight back on afterwards).

A larger trial, involving 280 patients, is now underway to see how successfully people can reverse their type 2 diabetes through weight loss simply under the care of their GP.

The divorced couple has been fighting over who will be the primary parent to their twin daughters since the very early seasons of Teen Mom 2, and it will all come to a head on the March 28 episode when we get to watch Simms learn that he has won.

The proud dad is instantly emotional over the fact that he gets everything he asks for, including being named the primary caretaker and the primary legal custodian. As Simms’ lawyer says, “[Leah] no longer has the decision making, it’s shared now. So you both have to share it.”

More: Leah Messer officially ended her marriage in an unconventional way

Once he had a second to process what his lawyer was saying, Simms said, "It's amazing. We've fought for so long. I mean, it's hard to hold back the emotions. I really didn't expect it, you know? But for the girls' sake, I'm tickled pink that it happened."

Not only is he in tears that he will be the primary caretaker, but he also uses phrases like “tickled pink” in a lawyer’s office. Simms is basically the most charming Southern teddy bear in the world.

Messer sparked concern in Simms (and his current wife, Miranda) when she repeatedly brought the girls to school late and missed important doctors' appointments. Simms tried to explain many times the importance of responsibility and getting the girls their best shot and an education, but Messer continued to prove that she wasn’t focused on being the best mother she could be. We’ll all have to tune in to see whether or not this is the end for the custody battle between Messer and Simms.

Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg deal with huge privacy invasion

$

There are times that celebrities complain about aspects of their lives that genuinely make my eyes roll. If Kim Kardashian expects me to feel bad for her that she doesn’t have enough marble in her house, I don’t care. But when Jenny McCarthy was outside on her front lawn picking up her newspaper and some stranger pulled up looking for a picture, I did genuinely feel bad for her.

More: Jenny McCarthy says her son has no idea he is being bullied

In the latest episode of Donnie Loves Jenny, the stars deal with random strangers showing up to their Illinois home hoping to take a picture or talk to them. If I didn’t actually see the cars pulling up to their house, I wouldn’t believe it. I mean, who just rolls up to a stranger’s house and asks for a picture? Not anyone I know.

The couple had to jump through major hoops in order to get a fence built around their yard in order to protect their privacy, and the entire time I was thinking, how is this necessary for them? How does anyone justify invading another person’s privacy like that?

More: Donnie Wahlberg's junk's got the right stuff, baby

I understand they are celebrities and that means they’ve given up a certain percentage of their privacy, but I think the line for when it’s acceptable and when it isn’t acceptable to walk up to a celebrity looking for a selfie is way before walking up to their front door and knocking. We end up punishing people for letting us into their lives and sharing their talents with us. One selfie isn’t worth making another person feel violated and unsafe in their own home. You can get likes somewhere else.

More: Donnie Wahlberg and Jenny McCarthy are putting their marriage at risk

The couple was able to get clearance to add a fence to their house and is now protected, but the real problem hasn’t been solved. The real problem is respecting personal boundaries of even your favorite celebrity. Always.
