Shark Tank's Sharks find their hearts thanks to kitty cuddles (PHOTOS)

From dogs to lionfish, several different kinds of animals have been featured in Shark Tank pitches. Tonight, the show expanded its animal repertoire with a chicken coop, a dog and several adorable cats. The kitties had the opportunity to hang out with a few of the Sharks while Victoria Coopman and Tim Taft made their pitch for Innovation Pet, Inc., a pet products company with a promising future.

Kitties are a great tool for anybody trying to get in the Sharks' good graces, but these little bundles of fur just might have made tonight's entrepreneurs a bit too confident. They somehow thought that the Sharks would go for $250,000 for 5 percent equity. Either that, or the entrepreneurs cleverly began with a very high pitch in hopes of being negotiated down to something more reasonable, yet favorable for their purposes. Overconfidence is the more likely explanation, as the entrepreneurs boasted about their company soon hitting an impressive $2.5 million in sales.

Viewers expressed some interest in the very high pitch (and the eventual $250,000 for 12.5 percent Coopman and Taft snagged from Daymond John), but they mainly just wanted to see the Sharks hanging out with cats. Robert Herjavec especially seemed to have a good time, although he jokingly admitted that he knew all about being in the doghouse.

It wasn't exactly a surprise when Herjavec got all cuddly with the kitties, but viewers were taken aback when they saw Daymond John bonding with his new friends. Viewers were greatly appreciative of this budding friendship, as they made quite clear on Twitter:

Not only did John quickly bond with the cats from Innovation Pet, Inc., he offered up a very surprising revelation: He's in the market for chicken coops! While discussing this important product, he admitted to having purchased six coops recently — and to having been surprised by their price. Who knew John was such an animal lover?

The best Shark Tank moments are usually either inspiring or cringe-worthy, but maybe the show needs to bring on a few more pet-loving entrepreneurs. The already entertaining series could be that much better if it featured a weekly dose of Herjavec and John chilling with kittens.

Ciara and Russell Wilson are engaged

It's finally happening — Ciara and NFL star Russell Wilson have announced they are engaged to be married. Wilson, a quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, recently revealed that he popped the question to the 30-year-old singer, actress, model and record producer (seriously, is there anything Ciara can't do?) while the couple were vacationing in the Seychelles. He gifted her a very lovely and very large diamond ring before sharing a video with friends where he exclaimed, "She said yes! Yeah! Making this thing happen. My baby."

Ciara and Wilson have been dating since April 2015. From the very start, they've seemed totally smitten with one another and on the same page when it comes to their journey together. They attended the White House Correspondents' Dinner with Wilson's grandmother, made things official on the BET Awards red carpet and both have proudly announced they've decided to remain celibate until their wedding night.

That last little tidbit has snagged the lion's share of headlines. Imagine that: a singer best known for the single "Love Sex Magic" saving her love, sex and magic until after vows have been exchanged. Khloé Kardashian had to defend herself against a tirade of angry Ciara fans after she questioned the couple's reasons for announcing they were practicing celibacy, going as far as to say "it's not like we don't know if she is a virgin or not."

More: Ciara kicks her cheating fiancé Future to the curb

To her credit, Ciara, who has a one-year-old son named Future Zahir Wilburn with ex-fiance Future, has chosen not to respond to Kardashian's comment. When you're happy, in love, looking toward the future and have nothing to prove to anyone, why engage in unnecessary drama?

She has, however, had zero problem explaining her reasons for waiting until marriage. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Ciara made it clear that their celibacy vow was Wilson's suggestion: "It's until the deal is sealed. Absolutely. It was an organic thing for him and I think he was just being honest about where we are. It's cool when you get to build a foundation with someone on how much you care for each other and really know each others' personalities, so it's really fun."

More: Khloé Kardashian attacked after insensitive comments about Ciara's celibacy

Russell is reportedly treating Ciara's son like his own (sweetness!) and enjoys spending time with the tot and taking him on vacation with them.

Ciara deserves happiness in her life. It seems like she genuinely tried to create a future with Future, but the rapper reportedly cheated on her with his wardrobe consultant, Tyrina Lee. She was forced to call off their engagement just three months after the birth of their son.

All water under the bridge now. Here's to happy times. Congrats to Ciara and Wilson — now let the wedding planning begin.

For a simple twist on a favorite, a fresh round loaf of bread gets hollowed out and filled with lots of cheese, chopped veggies and, of course, the pepperoni for this easy pizza dip. To make this vegetarian, omit the pepperoni, or simply use a vegetarian-friendly version, which you can find at almost any health food store.

Zayn Malik may have just tattooed his face

Never put it past Zayn Malik to take a risk and do something totally unexpected. The former One Direction singer, who is enjoying a successful solo music career, may have made a permanent change to his lovely face. Malik reportedly got two large tattoos on his face and posted the evidence on Instagram.

The 23-year-old "Pillow Talk" singer, who dates Gigi Hadid, appeared in a black and white photograph with a hummingbird tattoo on his collarbone and a bird/flower hydrid tat that extends from the right side of his forehead down to his cheekbone. The second tattoo also features the letters "M.O.M.," which isn't in honor of his mom, but rather promo artwork for his upcoming album, "Mind of Mine," which will be released on March 25. Apologies in advance to anyone who "awww'd" before discovering he has turned himself into a walking billboard.

Anyway, here's Malik with his latest face tattoos:

More: Zayn Malik's girlfriend loves his tattoo of her face

I should mention he posted a second photo on IG that shows yet another tattoo on the other side of his neck, which appears to be a rose, though it's difficult to make out and Malik isn't commenting about them yet.

I'm not sure what to think. The fact that he captioned this photo "Like I would" leads me to believe that he is using the title of his second single to mess with fans and get them talking about him and his music. Would he actually take the plunge and ink a part of his body that he can never, ever conceal?

More: 8 thoughts we had while watching Zayn Malik's 'Pillow Talk' (VIDEO)

Well, considering the fact that Malik once got a tattoo of ex-fiancée Perrie Edwards on his arm and that his body is a work of art, I'm inclined to believe that he would do this. Will he regret it one day? Sure, maybe. But a young man who jumped ship from one of the most successful bands on the planet and broke up with his fiancée (like, in the same breath) doesn't strike me as the type who wastes time regretting past decisions.

Sigh. Oh, Zayn, you still have a beautiful face. It's just that you've now made it more difficult to see your beautiful face. Different strokes.

Why businesses need more working moms

More: 10 stages of a snow day for a work-at-home mom

Suddenly, the life they’ve worked so hard to build their identity around changes, and their focus shifts to their new title: mom. The inevitable conversations take place about how long a maternity leave she will take and whether she will be going back to work at all. It’s a decision that, no matter the outcome, has some guilt attached to it.

For a long time, social norms told us that moms should stay home, raise the children and manage the household. We’re fortunate to live in a time when there’s significantly more opportunity for women, although there’s more progress to be made. Still, there seems to be a perception that working moms are only mediocre both in their role as mother and as a professional simply because their time and attention is divided.

More: 9 ways to deal when the kids like their nanny more than you

We believe just the opposite

Because of a mom’s desire to continue on in her career after welcoming baby, regardless of what that looks like — full time, part time, in an office or from home — she has made the decision and is dedicated to doing both and doing them well.

Her time is limited

Moms in the workplace have schedules they need to stick to. Some employers view this as a challenge, given that they don’t have as much flexibility. We view this as a more efficient employee who has to tackle all of their to-dos to avoid being late to daycare pickup.

Her time is valuable

She’s got family as a priority, and when she is with them, she wants to be all in. That means she’s not going to waste her hours at the office water cooler or taking leisurely lunches. She’s got a job to finish so she can spend quality time with her loved ones each day. We know there are working moms who are leading successful and fulfilling lives as both moms and professionals.

We also know there are moms who feel stuck, moms who want to be taken seriously and not viewed as a distracted employee, and moms who are at home with their children looking for an opportunity to get back in the workplace.

It’s time we highlight the many strengths of these valuable women. We’re at a place where we need to redefine what the typical workday looks like — providing more flexibility in schedule and embracing working remotely to capitalize on the talent that’s out there but doesn’t fit into the standard 8-to-5 job with a 45-minute commute.

Don’t be mistaken — moms out there mean business, too.

How my husband and I are dealing with his night terrors

More: I fear my husband's surgery will trigger his pain-pill addiction

“This is very common,” they told us. When that nerve block wears off, all hell breaks loose in your body.

“Please, Lord,” I prayed, “Don’t let all hell break loose with the drugs again.”

Once they got the meds adjusted, we had a very frank conversation with the nurse and nurse practitioner who were caring for my husband. We told them about his battle with opioid addiction and how we just did not want to go down that road again — ever.

Our nurse was so compassionate. She listened to my husband and said, “No one has ever admitted to me that they struggled with addiction.”

When I tell you I am extremely proud of my husband, believe me — I am so proud. Still, I couldn’t help but be afraid that this surge of drugs in his system would ignite a craving like the old days. Our nurse and doctor both said, “This pain is very real, though, and it must be treated.”

So we came home with a prescription for the strongest painkillers I ever remember seeing my husband use. He was to take two 15mg pills, every four hours, and as with previous prescriptions, I would keep them locked away and give them to him as needed. My husband swallows them in front of me, and we have no issues of broken trust or reliving the nightmares from years ago.

More: How I accepted that my love couldn't save my husband from addiction

The nightmares are present, however. These opioids cause my husband to have horrific night terrors, and the fear that he will become addicted again has caused me to have night terrors for years.

We aren’t sleeping. The pills seem to go into his system within minutes after swallowing, and he breaks out into a full body sweat. He makes these grunting noises that remind me of the days he used to try and hide the pills from me, yet all the while I knew. You don’t just sweat profusely, grunt and talk incoherently in your sleep, not to mention start to vomit, for no reason. I have to remind myself that these issues are not self-inflicted this time, and he isn’t hiding anything from me. This time, we are actively treating pain and doing so with tremendous love.

“You were blessed with an incredible ability to discern the truth,” our former marriage counselor, Bob, once told me. “Trust your instincts, and be firm.”

When he said that, Bob wasn’t advocating for me to get a divorce. He was advocating for me to put my foot down and practice tough love.

Now after this surgery, my husband wakes up every 45 minutes to an hour, drenched in sweat, gasping for air and needing me to remind him the dreams are not real. I’m practicing gentle love with him, given that we have to take the pills. I say “we” because it is a team effort. I give them, and he takes them. Talking to my husband in the most loving, soothing voice I can seems to calm the night terrors. It is 2:30 in the morning as I type this, and I am having to imagine the way I used to tuck my daughter back in bed when she was little and had a nightmare.

I gave my husband a glass of cold water and tried to calm him. I wet a washcloth and ran it over his face, his head and his neck.

“Everything’s OK,” I whispered. “I’m here.”

“These nightmares are killing me,” he said. “I don’t want to go through this all over again.”

“You aren’t going through this alone this time,” I reassured him. “I’m here, and nothing is going to happen — not to you and not to us. We’ve got this, and this time we have countless people praying.”

Why anyone would willingly put themselves through opioids, I do not know. As soon as we can back off of these pills, we will.

Although we haven’t been in counseling for quite some time now, we communicated frequently with Bob. We were extremely fortunate to maintain a friendship and relationship with him over the years. Visits, texts and phone calls — Bob was always there if I ever thought we needed him. He was an invisible safety net that I knew I could turn to should the problems resurface.

We are now one week out from surgery, and I just received word that Bob lost his battle to cancer this morning. He died peacefully in his sleep.

Tears streamed down both of our faces as we prayed to put into action the advice Bob had given us years before. Jesus used Bob to save our marriage. The heartache and the fatigue make it difficult for me to catch a breath today. Bob had told me just a few weeks ago that he would be at my book signing.

Now, open, honest communication will see us through the use of opioids again. But mostly, prayer is what will get us through.

The obession with selfies is focusing on the wrong things

$

Journalist Fiona Keating expressed concern about the link between narcissism and selfishness, as seen in this International Business Times article. As society gives celebrity, physical appearance, fame, money and youth lots of attention, it is not too much of a stretch to assume that these type of selfies will feed into this concept as well.

More: How the media is promoting unhealthy body image expectations

Giving too much value to what is on the outside instead of the inside is worth discussing, and we need to keep the conversation going so we do not forget where the attention needs to be and we teach our youth how to value inner beauty. Let's not judge others for what they post on social media sites but start to change the way we talk about inner beauty over outer beauty. Selfies, makeup, celebrities and social media are entertaining and fun things to read or look at — not to emulate.

More: Rebel Wilson strikes back at the Kardashians' superficiality

It doesn't matter what you look like, what size you are, how great your makeup is, how much plastic surgery you have or have not had, what type of body you are in, what color your hair is, whether you are tall or short, how much money you make or if you are famous. When thinking about the media's recent uproar over Kim Kardashian posting nude selfies, it is important to remember what is actually significant.

Anyone, including you or me, can post a selfie of whatever they want whenever they want. That is their own choice, and we should not challenge this or say hurtful things to others because of it. However, the thinking on women and empowerment is a bigger discussion. If people are empowered by their body or sexuality, that, too, is their own choice, and no one should judge them.

Looking for inspiration and empowerment from women in areas other than looks might be worthwhile as well. Let’s change the conversation about physical looks and body style, because outside appearance just does not matter. Be proud of yourself in your own skin for who you are, not what you look like.

With the advent of the selfie, which focuses on looks, I pondered what might be posted instead of selfies. How about we focus on other characteristics, such as being a kind person, helping others, making a difference in someone’s life or changing the world for the better? So many women are worth talking about, not for their appearance but for their accomplishments, deeds and beliefs. It might make for wildly popular social-media feuds to admire and discuss physical appearance, but it’s really not that important.

There are plenty of more important things women contribute to society than physical appearance. This modern list has some amazing women, as does this historical list. And there are plenty of female role models in our own backyards, from teachers to moms, who are just as amazing. We are the ones who can change the conversation.

7 facts you probably didn't know about St. Patrick's Day

$
0
0

1. There's a man behind the name

St. Patrick's Day has been celebrated by the Irish for over 1,000 years during the Lenten season. St. Patrick was not actually Irish, having been born in Roman Britain. Kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave, he is often credited for explaining the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) by using the three leaves of the shamrock.

Over a period of time, St. Patrick was largely forgotten, but after a while he became known in myths and celebrated on March 17 (when he died, in 461 A.D.) as a feast day — a time to remember and reflect on his life and attend Mass.

More: How I learned to love historical fiction

2. You're wearing the wrong color

Even though a lot of people wear green on St. Patrick's Day, the color should actually be blue, as that is the color associated with St. Patrick. But since he preached the Trinity and the shamrock is a symbol of that, we wear green. The shamrock is not the national symbol of Ireland, though — the harp is.

3. Sorry, no snakes were involved

So, back to the question of St. Patrick banishing the snakes from Ireland: That is mostly untrue, as Ireland never had snakes to begin with. It is often thought that the snakes represented the pagans with whom St. Patrick had some issues.

4. It used to be really hard to get a drink in Ireland

The Irish are often known for their propensity for a drink, but from 1927 to 1961, the only place to get a drink on March 17 was the Royal Dublin Dog Show — a grand occasion, except for the dogs — because of the strict laws against the sale of alcoholic beverages on religious days. Guess the church and state were concerned that there would be too much consumption of "the drink" on this holy day.

5. Nobody knows where St. Patrick is buried

Down Cathedral in the town of Downpatrick, County Down, is the supposed resting place of St. Patrick. No one is really sure, but it's nice to have somewhere to go and visit if you so wish. While there, you can also reflect on saints Columcille and Brigit, as they are thought to rest there also.

6. There's a reason leprechauns hide their gold

Then we have leprechauns: Why do they hoard that pot of gold? Well, they worked hard for that gold by mending and making shoes, which is why they guard it. What they actually do with it, well, no one really knows, I guess. Did you know that there are no lady leprechauns?

7. And last but not least...

Did you also know the first Irish parade in the U.S. was in 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City? I didn't know that either! I did, though, know that Irish soda bread, typically served on St. Patrick's day, got its name from the use of baking soda instead of yeast.

Irish soda bread is quite easy to make, as you don't have to worry about rising the dough. Check out a few different ways you can make your own Irish soda bread.

There you have it! As they say, Éirinn go brách — Ireland forever!!

It wouldn't be surprising if you keep moving the papers to the bottom of the pile or neglect returning phone calls. Your reactions are bound to be more emotional than rational given the placement of the planets, and that's why you need to focus on doing what it takes. Once signed, sealed and delivered you can go back to living your life.

Jupiter in that part of your solar chart that pertains to friends in high places ensures that your prayers will be answered. You asked for help from those who can open doors and they opened them. The Jupiter/Pluto trine on March 16 will be a red-letter day for you. Yet there's always a cost when Pluto is involved, so pay close attention to things like reciprocity, unspoken expectations and any other strings that might be attached. Honor these obligations and you won't have to worry about any of them coming back and biting you in the derrière one day.

Saturn in Sagittarius is analogous to the kid who has to sit inside the classroom during recess while her friends play outside. It's no fun and you feel like you've been singled out unfairly for punishment. You haven't been, but Saturn is the planet of the teacher in astrology and if it's restricting your movements these days then it's because there's a life lesson that you have to learn. Maybe you have to take care of old business, honor an obligation or deliver on a promise. Rest assured that once you have you can join the rest of the kids outside.

In medieval times people went on spiritual pilgrimages to atone for their sins. They would leave the town where they lived and journey far away to a holy city, sacred site or spiritual place to find redemption. Nowadays we just go on "package tours" but that impulse to leave the familiar and to rediscover ourselves in some place new is still there. You might go on a pilgrimage (many people still travel the Camino to Santiago de Compostela), but there are other routes that lead to that higher purpose you seek. One of these roads will materialize on March 16.

Planetary aspects involving Saturn on March 14 and Jupiter on March 15 are forcing you to rally and stare down an impending threat. This can range from an office bully to an agency bent on taking away your rights or privileges. Sometimes we don't know what we're capable of until we are pushed to the extreme. The experience will be harrowing, but you'll also feel reinvigorated. More importantly you'll never let anyone walk all over you again.

There's nothing you desire more than someone you can't have. You love it when he plays hard to get. That's why you don't bat a lash if he tells you that he's damaged goods, that he comes with too much psychological baggage or that he's trapped in a loveless marriage. The greater the obstacles, the more stoked your passion — especially when Mars forms a square to Venus on March 14. The only thing you need to watch out for is when hard to get turns into impossible to accomplish. It's something you'll be able to judge for yourself on the 21st.

Life isn't always a bed of roses when you're born under Venus. Venus was named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. She rules over the power of attraction and when she's your ruling planet, then you're used to people pursuing you. The downside is that there are thorny situations folded beneath those soft petals as you'll discover this week when a certain smitten someone refuses to take no for an answer. It's laudable that you want to let him down gently, but he's not getting it. Be prepared to smack him over the head with the truth on the 20th.

It's also the time when people turn to self-tanners to get a sun-kissed glow. These products are pretty much the same in that they promise darker skin without the sun, but one Swedish company has gone too far with its line of dark hues that many are comparing to wearing blackface.

Alm reacted by first locking her company's Instagram page, but it is currently public with an apology.

"I'm in chock (sic) for the response I've gotten and may have responded and commented the wrong way because I expect [people] to know u dont get black from tanning products," she wrote. "I've got a lot of feedback and mostly been called 'black face' and racist. [People] looks at my pic I've posted and without a blink assuming we desire to look black, I understand why it might seem that way and I apologize for the miss understanding my pic may have approached."

Alm added that her self-tanners are only dark when they are first applied and dramatically lighten after a shower. However, the photos don't seem to reflect that; they give off the impression that the tans stay dark for days.

Once Upon a Time's Henry may soon become a target in the Underworld

More: Once Upon a Time's Robin Hood might not make it out of the Underworld

After coming face to face with Cruella, Henry seems to be considering using his Author role to save both Cruella and Emma. Wait. What? How? Didn't he break the quill, because that was just too much power to hold? Henry did, but Cruella revealed an interesting detail about the quill.

Per Cruella, the quill is a "living, breathing entity," meaning it is alive just like a human being. So, just because Henry broke the quill doesn't mean it is destroyed for good. Apparently, after Henry broke it, the quill was sent to the Underworld, because it too has some unfinished business.

That said, Cruella wants Henry to help her find the quill, so he can then change her story and bring her back to the real world, aka Storybrooke, or wherever she wants to go. As the Author, Henry can change her fate, but that's not all. Cruella also got inside Henry's head by saying if he helps her, then he is also helping his mom, Emma. Meaning: by bringing Cruella back to life, that will no longer make Emma a murderer (remember, she killed Cruella) and restore her back to the pure soul she once was.

More: Once Upon a Time: Will going to the Underworld really save [spoiler]'s life?

Henry Mills
Image: Tumblr

If Cruella's words are true remains to be seen, but it looks like Henry is seriously thinking about helping her. I mean, why wouldn't he want to make Emma "pure" again and take away murder from her resumé?

That said, if he chooses to help Cruella, not only is Henry going down a dangerous road, but he may soon become a target. Imagine if others in the Underworld learn that Henry is the Author. Who's to say that they won't target Henry and try to get him to change their fate, too?

Basically, Henry needs to be wary of Cruella and better watch his back by keeping his Author identity a secret, or he will soon face even more trouble in the Underworld.

4 reasons RHOA's Phaedra Parks is totally guilty of betraying Kandi Burruss

Parks is believed to have alerted the feds to a motorcycle in Burruss' garage, although she acted all innocent when questioned by Porsha Williams. The following are just a few of the many signs pointing to Parks's guilt:

Kandi Burruss

1. She acted awfully coy when Williams told her the feds showed up at Burruss' house

In one of the more suspicious scenes of the evening, Williams told Parks all about the incident at Burruss' house. During her awkward conversation with Williams, she made every effort to avoid eye contact. In addition to looking away, she gave several nondescript, one-word answers to Williams' questions. Williams seemed pretty neutral about all this, but viewers were very skeptical after watching this scene.

More: Kenya Moore keeps pregnancy rumors alive with suspicious Instagram video

2. She just walked away when Kenya Moore mentioned the debacle at a party

Williams was by no means the only Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member to bring up Burruss' scuffle with the feds. Always eager to stir the pot, Moore also wanted to know the scoop. Had Moore pried even half as much as she usually does, viewers might have had additional insight into whether Parks was to blame. However, it wouldn't be surprising to see Moore inject herself into the feds drama if it comes up again during the reunion.

Phaedra Parks

3. Her relationship with Burruss has been deteriorating for some time

Parks and Burruss aren't on that great of terms these days, and what's more, Parks doesn't seem to be getting along with Todd Tucker. It wouldn't exactly be out of character for Parks to take out her newfound animosity by alerting the feds to Burruss' motorcycle storage setup.

More: Kim Fields attacked for sheltering her children from race issues

4. The feds also showed up at Cynthia Bailey's house

Burruss was not the only Housewife targeted by the feds: Cynthia Bailey and Peter Thomas also received a most unwelcome visit. The timing of these two visits from the feds seems awfully suspect.

More: RHOA's Kenya Moore's homophobic behavior crosses the line

Viewers are rarely inclined to side with Phaedra Parks — she burned her bridges when the whole scandal involving Moore's supposed flirtation with Apollo Nida went down. This evening, however, viewers were especially hard on Parks. Several accused her of calling the feds, while others shared their desire for her to receive her comeuppance.

"I'm concerned with the generation of girls who aspire to look like Zendaya. I do not worry about Zendaya's health or care whether she eats."

"There have been times I’ve look[ed] in a mirror and wished for a perfect figure. No matter how much I went to the gym or how little I ate carbs and sugar, I still didn’t see what I imagined was perfect," Steel wrote on the video she posted on her popular Facebook page.

Over time, she realized that happiness won't come from forcing her body to be something that it's not.

"Once I realized that naturally, I don’t have a coke bottle figure, or long and thin legs, I began to let go of the pressures I’ve felt to fulfill an image that our society has deemed the pinnacle of beauty," she wrote in a comment. "I like to adventure and I love to try new foods — especially if they’re spicy. So let go of your demons and learn to enjoy the things you love in life. You can be healthy and happy. I’ve had this idea for a long time and I’m glad I finally did it!"

More: Fitness expert calls plus-size model Tess Holliday unhealthy

Most of the comments were supportive, thanking her for speaking about an issue that is, sadly, so common among women. However, others have called her video into question, saying that she's trying to justify being unhealthy.

And she wasn't having it, adding that her commentary wasn't about "letting yourself go," but about "letting go" of unhealthy standards.

"I do still work towards goals, but not towards body image goals that are unrealistic for my body type," she added. "...I've set realistic goals for myself and that's the point. I eat food that makes me happy and go to the gym a healthy amount. There's a balance. "

This is where I'd add the raised-hands emoji, if I could. Her message is solid, but adding the striking drawing to it really brings the message home.

The Walking Dead: 8 times Carol and Maggie's episode was hard to watch

More: Lauren Cohan discusses her new role and why she embraces being 'complicated'

Last week, we learned via walkie-talkie that a small contingency of Negan's Saviors had escaped the compound before Rick's crew... well... exterminated everyone there. Those select few then kidnapped Carol and Maggie, who were waiting on the compound's perimeter.

TWD
Image: Gene Page/AMC

Tonight, we actually saw the continuation of that tense revelation, and — from start to finish — it was gripping. And, in many moments, it was difficult to watch for a variety of reasons. Here are a few of those powerful scenes.

1. When the Saviors covered Carol and Maggie's heads

There's this moment, just before the Saviors place Carol and Maggie's jackets over their own heads, where Carol seems seized with panic. Clearly, this is out of character for the fearless Carol we've come to know. But in that moment, all the air is sucked out of the room when the jackets go over their heads and we get to see the harrowing walk through the woods from their perspective — looking downward in the narrow scope of space they can actually see from beneath the cover of their jackets.

2. When Carol starts hyperventilating

We've become so accustomed to seeing the Carol who blows shit up and threatens small children that it's easy to forget she once was frail and afraid. Sitting on the floor of a slaughterhouse bound and gagged, though, glimpses of that woman resurface — starting with the moment Carol begins hyperventilating. Was this all part of some act to get the Saviors to let their guard down? Possibly. Still, seeing McBride relay so much complexity of emotion made us short of breath too, in the best way.

More: The Walking Dead: All signs point to the survivors finally losing their humanity

3. When Paula discovers Maggie is pregnant

Another lady who turns out an impressive performance in a leading role this episode is guest star Alicia Witt, who played a domineering member of the Saviors named Paula. When Carol lets it slip that Maggie is pregnant, we learn the full extent of Paula's misanthropy. Not only is she unbothered by the idea that she could be responsible for ending the life of a pregnant woman, but she even goes so far as referring to Maggie's unborn child as a "bite-sized snack" for the walkers. Yikes, lady.

4. When 'Chelle and Maggie wind up in a stalemate

Part of the interesting dynamic of tonight's episode was the way Saviors Paula and 'Chelle seemed in a sense to mirror Carol and Maggie, respectively. Although there was a palpable air of repulsion between the two sets of women, they were also intangibly linked. There's a permeating sense that, if they weren't trying to kill each other, they might actually like each other. This is especially evident when 'Chelle takes the bound Maggie into a confined room to try to get her to reveal the locale of their camp. At that point, 'Chelle reveals that she had lost a child, and it now makes sense why she was slightly protective of Maggie around the others. However, as she keeps a loaded gun sited on Maggie, it's nearly impossible to exhale out of fear that Maggie may never make it out of that room.

5. When Maggie goes full Carol

TWD
Image: Gene Page/AMC

Have we witnessed Maggie making some tough calls to stay alive? Sure. Have we watched her stab loads of walkers? Absolutely. But watching Maggie attack a woman in the group of Saviors (the "smoker") and savagely bludgeon her in the head until she was dead? That was a new experience, and it was honestly tough to see. I may even have covered my eyes and peeked through the slivers between my fingers until they left the poor lady's now-limp body behind. Word to the wise: Do not smoke around Maggie's unborn baby.

More: Steven Yeun reveals why The Walking Dead trolled its fans

6. When Maggie gets a knife to the torso

Or, well, she almost does anyway. After Carol and Maggie effectively finish off the secondary male and female Saviors, they encounter 'Chelle in the hallway. Carol is still suffering from a perceived crisis of conscience and can't bring herself to simply pull the trigger on this chick, so she and Maggie begin to fight hand-to-hand combat style. Mere moments in, 'Chelle slashes at Maggie with a huge knife, cutting her shirt at her torso.

7. When Carol goes full Carol

Despite her reticence to hurt any one thus far in the episode, 'Chelle almost stabbing Maggie in the stomach and ending little Glenn was far too close of a call for Carol. In a brutal moment, she shoots 'Chelle in the head at point blank range. The violence alone was disturbing, but almost equally as unnerving was watching Carol grapple with the side of herself that wasn't affected by such actions.

8. When Paula gets her comeuppance

Hey, people die with alarming frequency on The Walking Dead. This is the zombpocalypse, after all. And if you're guesting on the show and you've gotta die, I suppose the way to go out is in a blaze of gory. Watching Paula get impaled with a walker and then have the walker peel the flesh from her face with his teeth was next level nasty.
