Ashley Darby has had enough of trying to please the RHOP ladies

More: Caroline Manzo no longer speaking to her RHONJ sister

Poor Ashley Darby. And I mean that in the sense that she's worthy of sympathy, it's not a comment on her finances, because those are definitely resplendent. On last week's episode of RHOP, she invited the group to her beach house in Delaware and, with a few exceptions, they behaved abhorrently. (Did you know some people had to sleep in twin beds? And share bathrooms? Unbelievable.) On Sunday, the adventure continued, as Ashley tried to keep everyone happy with fancy dinners, a trip to an old-time photo place and a drag show. For the most part, it actually worked, until the last night, when her husband Michael showed up while the ladies were at a club.

More: Kim Richards made a sweet plea deal to avoid jail

If you watch the Real Housewives franchise, you know that the girls' weekend is a part of almost every season, regardless of location, and it almost always culminates in disaster. Some notable examples: The fight in Miami on this season of RHOA; and, one of my favorites, the time on RHONY when everyone went to St. Barts (except for Aviva and Reid) and they were having a lovely, drunken time until Aviva and Reid showed up and then there was a giant, screaming meltdown. The point is, on Sunday's RHOP episode, Ashley's efforts at a flawless second half of her own girls' weekend were finally paying off — until her husband Michael materialized on the last night of the trip, and then everything fell apart.

The women, particularly Karen, were furious about Michael's presence, feeling like he violated their space and was a distraction, but Ashley had had enough, stating that, since it was the last night of the trip, she didn't see anything wrong with ending the girls-only part a little early. I believe she uttered the phrase "I don't care". While everyone seemed to get over it after their initial annoyance (a spectacular game of beer pong happened later that night which included Michael), Karen refused to let it go, claiming that, had she known Michael would show up, she wouldn't have come, since she told her husband that the weekend would be man-free. (She's still totally mad about the time she threw that party on the boat and Michael got super drunk and tried to remove his pants in front of everyone.)

It's no wonder Ashley's at the end of her rope. She's been trying since her arrival on this show to make a good impression on the RHOP ladies, although it's become more than clear that her version of fun isn't always theirs (i.e. whiskey tasting in the basement of a bar). I can't blame her for wanting Michael there; he's in her corner, after all, which is definitely more than we can say about the ladies she's been hanging out with all weekend.

What did you think about Michael showing up at the girls' weekend? Should Ashley have been more understanding, or does everyone just need to chill? Tell us in the comments!

The Family: Who's evil and who's just misunderstood?

0
0

And while I am a long way away from deciding for sure who is a good guy/girl and who is a bad guy/girl, the lines are slowly being drawn now that we're into Episode 3.

More: The Family: Why Adam might not be who he says he is

Here are my theories about the heroes and villains of Season 1.

Villains

1. Claire Warren

Call me negative, but politicians don't really have my trust right now in the wake of our current presidential primaries. (It's rough out there, people.) And maybe that's just where the show wants its viewers' heads to be. If that's the case, call me duped, because I just don't trust Warren matriarch Claire. At all.

2. Willa Warren

If I don't trust Claire, how can I possibly trust Willa, who's her mom's right-hand woman? Plus, the flashbacks don't exactly do Willa any favors. If she was planting evidence as a child, what's she planting now?

3. Hank

Just because Hank didn't kill Adam doesn't mean he isn't a shady dude. Everything he does totally creeps me out, and the guy has a record, after all. I don't know what he's playing at, but there's no way he'll spend the rest of the season just playing with puppies that's for sure.

More: The Family theory: Fake Adam has a secret link to real Adam

Heroes

1. Adam (or the Adam impostor...)

Call me an optimist, but I think the returned Adam is a good kid. Now, whether he's the real Adam or not is still definitely a topic for discussion and that key reveal tonight made me skeptical about his intentions. But, if anything, I think he must have had a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome. I'm not at the point where I think he's out to get the Warren family, whether he's an actual member or not.

2. John Warren

Sure, John cheated on his wife and did some shady things the night Adam went missing, but the disappearance of his son clearly destroyed him. He's not the most moral of people, but he tries to do what's best for himself and his family, even though he seems to rarely be successful.

3. Danny Warren

So far Danny (Zach Gilford) is actually my favorite character and not just because Gilford is adorable to watch and great in this role, but because he is trying so hard to really find out the truth of the situation with Adam. He knows his family is super messed up — and I definitely don't think that reporting Bridey is his way out — but he's got some serious hero potential.

More: Scandal characters who could take over Fitz's presidency

4. Officer Meyer

There are a lot of cases of people trying to do the right thing and failing miserably in this show, but none more so than Meyer. She put away the wrong guy in Adam's case and made so many wrong moves leading up to when Adam went missing. But she's trying to right her wrongs now and she might actually stand a chance.

5. Bridey Cruz

Maybe it's just because I'm a journalist that I relate to Bridey, but I do have a soft spot for her in my heart. She's definitely skirting the law in order to get information for her story about Adam, but she's doing the digging that someone needs to do. There is more to this case than anyone knows and a mind like Bridey's might just be the one to unravel the truth.

Do you agree with my list of villains v. heroes for The Family?

Fitness may be more about genetics than anything else

0
0

Yet they're also a bit of a blind excuse. It's really easy to say, "My genes make it harder for me to lose weight," when there's certainly nothing visible to the eye to strictly prove or disprove the statement.

Until now.

Gene testing, once an absurdly expensive tool used by scientists in white coats hidden away in research laboratories, is now affordable and accessible for the average person. And it's being used specifically to help people understand their genetics as they relate to weight loss and total fitness.

I recently had my own genes tested by FitnessGenes and found the experience to be downright fascinating. Because I've been analyzing my responses to workouts and dietary consumption for years, using my own body as a pseudo-lab, there weren't any major surprises. But to see evidence that my approach to training is actually genetically sound? That was pretty cool.

More: When owning a Fitbit becomes unhealthy >>

It's one thing to get an analysis of your genes; however, it's another thing entirely to put that information to use to improve your fitness. To some degree, genetic testing seems like a focus on minutia (probably because it quite literally is), and it's the convergence of genes, rather than a single gene, that adds up to create the totality of who we each are. So who, exactly, should try genetic fitness testing?

Dr. Dan Reardon, the co-founder and CEO of FitnessGenes, argues it really is for everyone from the pro athlete to the average person just trying to get in shape. "A professional athlete will generally be looking for every competitive advantage they can find," he says. "Even a 1-percent improvement in performance can mean the difference between fourth and first place. So the motivation to use genetic testing to enhance training is pretty significant."

But not any more significant than the motivation for the mom trying to get back in shape after having a baby. "The main reason people stop using the gym, stop following diets, or become completely detached from their health and fitness goals is because they simply don't see results and get bored," Dr. Reardon says. "There's no better way to become empowered than by a personalized precision-based program based on your DNA. By starting out on the right path from the outset without guesswork, people are more likely to achieve their goals."

More: Low-key exercises to get you back in the saddle >>

It's the specialized training and nutrition plans that accompany genetic fitness testing that are particularly beneficial. "There are literally thousands of training plans and nutrition plans in the world today," Dr. Reardon points out. "Some plans work well for one person but, with the same level of commitment and effort, not for the next, and that's because we're all completely different on a genetic level."

As I said before, it was really interesting to discover that the types of training programs I've been following for years are actually the exact types of training aligned with my genetic predispositions. And even though I'm perfectly capable of coming up with my own workout plans, I have to say, it's really nice to have plans customized for my genetics that I can simply pull up and follow from my FitnessGenes account. Although these personalized workouts are an additional cost to the genetic testing, everyone receives a summary of the type of training they should be engaging in.

The summary also includes how you should approach strength training, cardio and high-intensity interval training.

fitness-genes-sample
Image: Laura Williams screenshot

At the end of the day, genetic testing is information. It's education. "The truth is there are no single genes that give us a propensity to fitness," Dr. Reardon says. "It's the overall effect of many genes that, in unison, gives us a propensity to respond to certain types of training. Don't look at genes as being important for performance because they should be viewed as being targets of training that, when understood, improve the quality and specificity of workouts that will ultimately lead to better performance."

But what if your genes really are a bit of a sticking point when it comes to fitness? Will the confirmation keep you from pursuing your goals? Dr. Reardon argues no: "Consider the FTO gene as an example. This is the gene linked to obesity. The concern with telling obese people this gene result is if they do have the mutated version, then they will use that as an excuse for being obese. What actually happens, though, is that rather than using it as an excuse, it actually removes the negative emotions that the individual has about being obese, and they're more likely to do something about it. It's actually very positive to give people this type of information."

And just for the record, I carry one of the alleles associated with obesity. Genes don't have to be your destiny.

Kids' Choice Awards brings the fun, inspiration and a whole lot of slime

0
0

The Kids' Choice Awards brought the fun, laughs and a really big mess on Saturday, March 12, and I was inside The Forum in Inglewood, California, to get in on all the green, slimy action.

Blake Shelton hosted the event and kept the show moving with his larger-than-life personality and sense of humor. The The Voice judge and country singer even wore a unicorn costume at one point during the show.

More: Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton have a huge surprise for music fans

The majority of the audience consisted of parents and their children. KCA tickets can't be bought, so to score them, you have to either know somebody or be somebody. However, seat-filler tickets and pit tickets (for kids only) can be snagged online for free.

The KCAs is likely the only awards show where the entire audience screams along with every countdown at the end of commercial breaks. During those breaks, audience hype guys even shot T-shirts into the crowd out of cannons to keep the arena pumped up.

Performers included Charlie Puth with Wiz Khalifa, Joe Jonas' new band DNCE and Silento singing his viral hit "Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)."

Nickelodeon did a great job of seamlessly integrating both big-name talents, like Heidi Klum, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, and Nickelodeon stars into the show. The standout young celeb of the night was the star of Nickelodeon's Henry Danger, Jace Norman. Norman played a major role in the show as Shelton's partner in crime, teaming up with the country singer to slime John Stamos and play a toilet paper prank on DNCE.

One of the coolest and most innovative bits using Nickelodeon talent was when the cast of Game Shakers did a live-action version of the video game Mario Bros., complete with kids on wires.

More: Zendaya gives inspiring response to Julie Klausner's body-shaming tweets

What do kids love in 2016? Social media stars. No surprise, YouTube and Vine stars played a key role in the show. Cameron Dallas and Bethany Mota went head-to-head in a fan-voted slime-off, resulting in Dallas getting a major sliming. Fifth Harmony, Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Shelton were among other stars to get slimed.

While kids today are often glued to their phones watching online video, don't be fooled, they still love children's television stars. While exiting the venue, I got caught in a mob scene of young fans surrounding Disney Channel actors Peyton Meyer and Kelli Berglund. Meyer is a series regular on what's arguably Disney Channel's current most popular show, Girl Meets World. Berglund stars on the Disney XD show Lab Rats.

Through every winner's acceptance speech, from the cast of Nickelodeon's The Thundermans to the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro, the sentiments remained the same: encouraging kids to follow their dreams.

More: Angelina Jolie's Kids' Choice Awards speech about diversity is inspirational (VIDEO)

I attended the KCAs for the first time when I was on a trip to Los Angeles from my hometown, Omaha, Nebraska, with my family during middle school. At the time, it was the coolest thing to ever happen to me. I remember sitting in the audience and thinking, "If I can be here, maybe I can achieve my dreams, too."

Now, I've covered and attended the KCAs as a reporter and "adult" for the past five years. I'm no stranger to the KCAs, but my slime-colored, green ticket from the 2006 KCAs is still stuck with tape to the mirror in my childhood bedroom in Nebraska. That mom was right. Her daughter's going to want to keep it forever.

No surprise, Abraham says she does put herself in the same lane as the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star.

"I've been beating out Kim on a lot of things," Abraham responded.

Unfortunately, the host didn't give Abraham the opportunity to elaborate on what those things are. He then asked Abraham, "Do you think you've surpassed Kim Kardashian?"

"I think I've surpassed her in some aspects," Abraham replied. "Then again, I conduct myself and my brand in a different way and my life in a very different journey. So, I think I'm doing very well, and if not better."

Kardashian and Abraham may have both found fame on reality TV and dealt with their fair share of sex tape drama, but the Teen Mom star likely has a ways to go before matching Kardashian's earnings. According to Forbes, Kardashian earned $52.5 million last year, thanks in large part to her hit mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. According to Rant Finance, Abraham's net worth is $1 million.

More: Farrah Abraham's mom crosses a line in her daughter's love life

As far as social media numbers go, Kardashian has 41.7 million Twitter followers and 63.6 million Instagram followers. Abraham has 1.16 million Twitter followers and 469,000 Instagram followers.

Despite a pretty clear difference in the fame levels of Abraham and Kardashian, we are happy to hear Abraham is doing well. We're glad she's feeling good about her success and life journey.

Why I refuse to give my toddler a 'bedtime'

0
0

I’ve never attempted to attempt a bedtime routine with the little one. I’ve always felt like it was a whole lot of effort and not much payoff. The kid’s gonna go to sleep when she’s tired enough to, no matter how much calming lavender scent I surround her with.

More: Daylight saving is coming: How to get your kids to sleep through the change

When my 8-year-old was in her first and second year, our entire day was a regimen of the strictest schedule with only one goal in mind: to get her to sleep by 8.30 p.m. I thought I wasn’t a good mom unless my kid had a normal sleep schedule. When she stopped napping around 12 months old, I stressed over her not getting those extra hours. She woke up at dawn and didn’t stop until I painfully spent the evening trying to convince her to lie still long enough to go to sleep.

Every day ended in the same routine of dinner, bath, stories, then lying with her in bed, or patting her back until she fell asleep. Some nights I was out of there four or five hours after we began our descent into bedtime.

But my older daughter was a bit of a different breed of child than my second. I was there to fulfill her needs while she gained her independence. My second has been a little different.

More: 12 celebs who aren't afraid to admit they co-sleep

At first, having a baby who was happiest sleeping on my lap with an exposed nipple at her disposal was sweet, organic even, while I worked from home. It was easier for her to set her own schedule.

As she got busier, I tried, for a while, to get her into a routine. I discovered that no matter how much I struggled to wrangle her into bed, the hour or two I spent was all for naught. She fell asleep when she was tired, and my level of exhaustion shot up rapidly in my struggle to will her eyes to close. I gave up quickly on a set bedtime. What was the use for me to spend all this energy at the time I was most tired to convince her to sleep, when she’d naturally fall asleep anyway?

I realize this goes against most articles on sleep training. As parents, we’re expected to manipulate our children into having a schedule where they are meant to sleep for a pre-determined amount of hours. As a single mom with two kids, it was too much. While my older daughter prides herself in preparing for bed, playing her CD, and reading books on her own, my toddler played, or ate, and eventually showed signs she was tired enough to sleep, so I put her to bed.

More: The food stamp problem parents don’t talk about

With my older daughter, struggling through the bedtime routine, having her resist and sometimes physically fight me on it, only left me emotionally drained and feeling like a failure. When really, for some unknown reason, she just wasn’t tired at 8 o’clock that night. Maybe it would have saved us a lot of heartache in battling each other if I’d just watched her for physical cues that she was tired, and put her to bed when she was ready.

This is not the first time Simpson has come under fire for her raunchy comments and/or photos with her husband — and we don't think it will be the last — but critics feel that pictures, like this one, should be kept private.

Others are even more annoyed with the post and comments include, "Very disturbed and vain couple. Who needs to see this??!", "Someone takes these scissors and stab me in the eyes please!!!", and "That's disgusting."

It's obvious that Simpson just wants to prove she and Johnson can still have fun and goof around, and really, the fact they are so happy should be applauded, not criticized. But do critics have a point? Should PDA pictures be kept private?

Image: Conor McClure/Flickr

An Easter egg hunt is to be expected — which is exactly why you have to mix it up this year. Keep parents and kids on their toes with a new and interesting interpretation of the traditional Easter egg hunt. Try an egg hunt "upgrade" like a dusk hunt, treasure hunt, egg puzzle or golden egg hunt instead. You can also up the ante by throwing out the candy altogether and filling eggs with fun prizes, like stickers, movie tickets or even some cold, hard cash.

2. Egg toss

Each child should partner up to create teams of two, with each team given one raw egg. For the first round, the partners stand just three feet apart and toss the egg to each other. If the egg breaks, then the team is eliminated. After each round, the partners take a giant step back (becoming even further apart) and toss the egg again. The rounds continue until there is just one team left — the egg toss champions!

7 things your gynecologist wants you to know

0
0

1. How often do I really need a pap smear?

Yes, your prayers have been answered. You don't need a pap smear every year. Pap-smear guidelines state that after three normal annual paps you only need one every three years. Many women, even though they hate having it done, are skeptical when I tell them the recommendations have changed and most likely they do not need a pap every year. Some even insist I do the test after I have just told them they don't need it.

More: Why your hormones may be interfering with your sex drive

Why the switch? We discovered that doing paps more frequently did not lead to fewer cases of cervical cancer, which is the only reason for performing the test. Instead, it detected more abnormalities that required invasive and uncomfortable follow-up without any benefit.

What has made these new recommendations possible is a better understanding of the biology of cervical cancer and the addition of HPV testing. HPV, or human papillomavirus, is the source of most pap-smear abnormalities. For women between 30 and 65, co-testing — performing a pap with HPV — is recommended. If your pap is normal and HPV is negative, you don't need a pap for five years. Screening should begin at age 21. Women younger than 21 do not need a pap, and women older than 65 don't need to continue if their paps within the last 10 years have been normal. Women in the 21-30 age group should have just the pap smear, not co-testing, every three years.

Of course, if you have an abnormal pap, the screening schedule changes based on the kind of abnormality. There are some exceptions as well, including HIV infection, immune-system compromise, exposure to DES (diethylstilbestrol) and prior history of cervical cancer. If you have any of these, be sure to discuss it with your physician.

2. How often should I have a pelvic exam?

A pap smear and pelvic exam are not synonymous. The pap smear refers to the collection of cells from the cervix to screen for cervical cancer. The pelvic exam refers to the inspection and palpation of the pelvic organs, including the vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, bladder and rectum. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends having a pelvic exam every year, as it screens for other problems that can arise in the pelvis. With the exception of ovarian cancer, most problems that occur in that region will be symptomatic. Unfortunately, the pelvic exam on its own does not detect ovarian cancer early enough to make a difference in its outcome. Thus, the American College of Physicians does not recommend annual pelvic exams in asymptomatic women.

So, should you still see your gynecologist every year? I think so, because it is an opportunity to discuss your health questions or concerns. There is so much health information out there — some is good, some not so good. Your annual exam is the time to check in with a knowledgeable professional about current health recommendations and be evaluated if necessary for any ongoing health concerns.

3. When should I start screening mammograms?

This is a loaded question, with more than a little controversy and some very heated opinions. Here is my opinion, which you should consider as a starting point for a discussion with your own doctor, so that you can make the best decision for yourself: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPTF) in 2009, after reviewing the available evidence, recommended screening mammography be done every two years starting at age 50, after determining there was not enough evidence to support annual mammograms in women between the ages of 40 and 50.

These guidelines were widely ignored, and organizations such as ACOG continued to recommend annual mammograms starting at 40. The USPTF reaffirmed these standards last year, and again it was met with resistance. However, in October 2015, the American Cancer Society changed its recommendations and now says to begin annual mammography at 45, continue until 55, then go to every other year. I want my patients to be aware of the risks and benefits of mammography and then decide for themselves.

4. How safe is the birth control pill?

Birth control pills are very safe, have some noncontraceptive benefits and can be continued until menopause in women who do not smoke. It has often been stated that birth control pills changed the world. Being able to control fertility has allowed women the freedom to pursue education, a career and financial independence. It has separated sex and reproduction. The Economist stated it was one of the seven wonders of the world and defines the 20th century.

In addition to excellent contraception, the pill provides a number of benefits. It regulates your periods so they're light and predictable with minimal cramping. It decreases the amount of blood loss during your period, which improves anemia. You can choose to have no period at all by taking the pill continuously. It reduces acne and undesired hair growth. It significantly reduces your risk of endometrial cancer (which occurs in the lining of the uterus), ovarian cancer and even colon cancer.

There is an increased risk of blood clots, approximately 3–9 per 10,000 women compared with 1–5 per 10,000 women for nonusers, according to ACOG. So, the risk is increased but still very low. Birth control pills increase the risk of heart attack and stroke in women over 35 who smoke or have high blood pressure.

5. How can I make my horrible period better?

If your periods suck, you can do something about it. I am always surprised by the number of women who have awful periods. Sometimes they are so heavy as to soak through their clothes at an unpredictable time or so crampy and painful they have to miss work and other activities due to discomfort. This is where modern medicine can help. As described above, the pill can be a good choice for some women to manage their periods, even if they don't need the contraception. The Mirena IUD is another excellent choice to help control your periods. It works, using the hormone progestin, by preventing the endometrium or lining of the uterus from proliferating. Most women then have either a very light period or nothing at all.

Depending on your circumstance, you might benefit from a minor surgery, either a dilation and curettage (D&C) or an endometrial ablation. These are day procedures, can often be done in your doctor's office and have minimal recovery times, usually a day or two. Life is too short to lose a few days every month to deal with your period, especially when there are some straightforward ways to fix the problem.

6. Does natural family planning really work?

Natural family planning — or fertility awareness — works well with a surprisingly high success rate and can be a great option for some women. After all of this talk about hormonal therapies, not everyone can or wants to take hormones. Many women have for years relied on fertility awareness for contraception. This allowed them to prevent pregnancy successfully, and the knowledge they gained about their fertility could be used to help them conceive when the time was right.

The two-day method is a way to think about your fertility using cervical secretions. When you are fertile, your cervical secretions change. It becomes like the consistency of raw egg white — clear, smooth and slippery. Once you are familiar with your fertile cervical secretion, you can use the two-day method. Ask yourself two questions: Do I have fertile secretions today, and did I have them yesterday? If the answer to both of those questions is yes, you are fertile. If the answer is no, you are likely not fertile. This method has a very high satisfaction and success rate. There's a learning curve, but many women like feeling in touch with their bodies, their cycles and their fertility. It can be very empowering. Remember, though, as with all methods of contraception, it can fail.

7. What's one thing my OB-GYN wishes I wouldn’t do?

Don't lie. Why do people do this? I can't help you if I don't know what's going on. It's not so much that people consciously lie, although there is some of that, but most of the time I think patients just leave out stuff. Sometimes when pressed for details, if there is time, patients will open up. But time is usually limited, so I know many leave without addressing their underlying problems. I guess they think I will judge them or disapprove. It's not my job to judge or disapprove — it is my job to understand what your health issues are so I can work with you to be healthy, feel good and live well. The best way for me to do that is to have all your information. No one's perfect. Everyone has a vice or an unhealthy habit that crops up here and there. Let your doctor work with you to improve your health habits.

In a lengthy post on her Instagram, Kardashian preached to her followers about the power of self-love and how it's sometimes important to take care of yourself before other people.

"Sometimes we have to stop being so giving to others because in the process we end up destroying the part of us that needs to be giving to ourselves," she wrote. "I find that people may be practicing self care on so many levels but abandon themselves emotionally. So many search for others to make them feel whole. Try to stop searching for your missing pieces in other people or material things. Self-love or personal happiness should never be contingent on success because there are always failures to contend with no matter what level."

It makes sense that Kardashian might be taking some time for herself, as she's been by Lamar Odom's side almost constantly since a drug overdose landed him in the hospital last October. She also recently broke things off with James Harden, whom she was dating during Odom's health crisis. In her post, she continues, "Self-love is dynamic and runs deep. When we act in ways that expand our self-love, we begin to expand our minds. We start to notice the parts we once abandoned. We will find dimensions of our soul that need attention too. We begin to know exactly what we deserve and we shouldn't settle for anything less. Don't apologize for your past for it made you who you are today. Former RHOBH star divorces her husband of 13 years

Former The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Marisa Zanuck dropped a major hint that the marriage was suffering when she appeared on the show during Season 3 and said her hubby, Dean Zanuck, was not her type.

It seems she really meant that: According to TMZ, Marisa filed divorce papers in Los Angeles last month. She is asking for joint custody of their two young sons, aged 11 and 13.

More: RHOBH's Kathryn Edwards defends her behavior, calls out Erika Girardi

Marisa's run on RHOBH was short-lived. She appeared on just one season, introduced as a friend of Kyle Richards', and quickly ran afoul of two powerful costars.

First, she basically called Lisa Vanderpump two-faced in an interview.

"She does have this thing about her — a lot of the other girls see it, too — where she'll be nice on camera to you but then she won't talk to you or engage with you if you're at another party but we're not shooting," she told All Things Real Housewives.

She later ran afoul of Yolanda Foster after an ill-fated trip to Las Vegas when she made the mistake of blogging about one incident in particular and placed Foster in a less-than-flattering light.

"I spilled red wine on my dress, which was enough to shift the energy temporarily. Most of the women were helpful and that was very sweet, but Yolanda just gave me a disapproving stare," she wrote on her Bravo blog. "Not sure where that came from. All I could think was 'Thank God I didn't spill that red wine at Yolanda's house because if it upset her in Vegas, I would really be up shit's creek in Malibu.'

"Maybe Yolanda has never spilled a drink before, which wouldn't surprise me since her life is so pristine and perfect that it just wouldn't fit in with her image. That said, I am admittedly clumsy and this won't be the last time I spill a drink."

Even her relationship with Richards suffered and she announced on Twitter in 2013 that her former bestie had unfollowed her on social media — something Richards said was completely accidental. Marisa later deleted her tweets.

While drama is usually welcome on RHOBH, the rifts did affect Marisa's employability and she did not return for Season 4.

"I wasn't asked back. It's as simple as that and I'm OK with it," she told Celebuzz.

Now its her turn to do the rejecting, as apparently her husband was not asked back for another "season" of the marriage.

Dean is the son of famed Hollywood producer Richard D. Zanuck, who made such iconic films as Driving Miss Daisy, Jaws and six Tim Burton movies. Dean himself has been an executive at The Zanuck Company for 13 years and is behind such films as Reign of Fire, Road to Perdition and Get Low.

Canadian army looking to recruit women despite their 'sexualized culture'

More: 11 Things feminists should brace themselves for if Donald Trump becomes president

This year, the military only recruited 735 women, so women now make up 15 per cent of the enrolments. While that number tops the 640 female recruits to the armed forces last year, they hope to significantly increase this number. But it should come as no surprise that women choose to stay away from the military.

Last year, a report from retired Supreme Court justice Marie Deschamps found that there was an “endemic” problem of sexual misconduct in the military and a lack of functional resources for victims of sexual violence. "Victims, concerned about how they will be treated by the military justice system, tend not to report sexual assaults," writes Deschamps. "Many of those victims who did report an offence said that their experiences were 'atrocious.'"

A big part of the problem was the pervasive macho culture which included "frequent use of swear words and highly degrading expressions that reference women's bodies, sexual jokes, innuendos, discriminatory comments with respect to the abilities of women, and unwelcome sexual touching," explains Deschamps.

Sexist behavior and views appear to be deep-rooted in the military. Who can forget the Canadian Armed Forces officer, Mason Stalker, who was charged this July with multiple counts of sexual assault and exploitation of the cadets he was charged with mentoring? And the military has also had issues with misogyny and sexism amongst higher-ups.

Gen. Tom Lawson, the chief of defence staff, came under fire last June when he expressed a "boys will be boys" attitude about sexual assault in an interview on CBC's The National saying, "... we’re biologically wired in a certain way and there will be those who believe it is a reasonable thing to press themselves and their desires on others," implying that sexual assault was a natural male instinct. Though Lawson quickly apologized for his "awkward" comment, it'll take more than an apology to overturn an entrenched macho culture.

Getting justice via the military police court has also proved to be challenging for those who have reported sexual assaults in the military. St. John's woman Lesleyann Ryan reported being sexually assaulted at the end of her Bosnia tour, and after filing a freedom of information request to view her investigation. Ryan says, in an interview with The St. John's Morning Show, that she was "blown away" by how "incompetent" the proceedings were. "I can see why they never charged him, because what [the military] submitted was not what I said. I wasn't even given a chance to sign off on [my statement], so they took a verbal complaint, sent it up, didn't bother to have me check what they had written down," she recalls. "What came back was not what I said."

She added that speaking out about the alleged abuse had a detrimental impact on her career, causing her to drop out of law school. "The harassment from peers and supervisors, it eventually got to the point I had to get out," she says.

In August, the new chief of defence staff, Gen. Jonathan Vance, made efforts to get rid of a culture that disrespects women at its root, banning sexist jokes and sexualized photos of women as part of an anti-harassment campaign. The military also set up an independent centre to support victims, as recommended by Deschamps in her report. Since opening in September, the Department of Defence reported (in February) that the center fielded 100 harassment or sexual assault-related complaints, eight of which they're currently investigating. Gen. Christine Whitecross, commander of military personnel, says in an interview with CBC News that "the fact that people are calling the centre is a tremendous — great — step forward."

Canadian forces ending sexism

Canadian forces ending sexism

Maybe so, but let's not rest on our laurels just yet — the step forward we should aim for would eliminate sexual assault in the military entirely. A 2014 study found that whopping one in 14 women have been sexually assaulted in connection with their work with the military. And Statistics Canada is expected to release a new study soon to assess the current scope of the problem.

While the Canadian Forces have clearly taken steps to address the deep-rooted culture of sexism, 100 complaints of sexual assault and harassment are still 100 far too many. Only time will tell if the changes they've made to fight sexism are working for women.

"It's all friendly fun and they tease each other relentlessly over their choice of attire when they go out. In fact it's a long-standing joke among their friends to see how mismatched ‘Mr Chalk and Cheese' are looking that day."

Gilmore Girls: Will Rory marry one of her three exes?

More: Gilmore Girls: 3 clues Melissa McCarthy is totally returning

Gilmore Girls wedding

Gilmore Girls wedding

Really, it could be anyone, including Luke and Lorelai, Kirk and Lulu, Rory and one of her three exes, or maybe even a vow renewal with Sookie and Jackson (you know, if Melissa McCarthy actually returns as Sookie). The options are endless, but I'm sure the most die-hard of fans hope it's Rory. If it is her wedding, then who will she say "I do" to? The most obvious options are Dean, Jess and Logan. If not one of them, then a new man may waltz into Rory's life.

Per an interview with the Gilmore Guys podcast, Michael Winters (aka Taylor Doose) kind of alluded to Rory reuniting with either Dean, Jess or Logan. "I think I know from the scripts who has an edge, but I’m not going there."

More: 8 details about the Gilmore Girls revival that'll get fans excited

Rory Gilmore

Well, that's an interesting way to put it. Does this mean that one of her former flames will definitely win her heart again? It sure sounds like it, but fans will have to wait until the revival to see for certain. As for the wedding, if Rory does get back with Jess, Dean or Logan, then that also means she could marry one of them.

Who does Winter want to see Rory with? "I would not touch that hot button," he said. "I want to stay away from it; they’re all such nice guys, Jared and Milo and Matt, you know? I don’t know, who would decide? Who could decide?"

With that, all of these emerging revival details leave fans with more questions and fewer answers. Rory totally feels my pain in the above GIF.

Canadian woman sent home from work for not wearing her hair straight

0

Akua Agyemfra told the CBC that she was sent home from her shift at Jack Astor's because she wore her natural hair in a bun. The reason: The management requires all servers to wear their hair straight down. Agyemfra's physically can't do that in its natural state.

More: I have struggled all my life to find my natural hair beautiful

"Management at Jack Astor’s did NOT specify that I had to wear my hair down every single shift. If they did, I would have NOT taken the job because I know my hair cannot be straight every day," she wrote in a Facebook post after she was sent home from her shift.

"I had extensions during my interview and my two training shifts. After I took out my braids, my Afro did not comply to the ‘straight hair’ rule. To maintain it and look presentable, I had to put it in a bun."

More: 6 ways you can make your hair grow faster

Women of color have been forced to straighten and chemically alter their hair for years — or wear wigs and extensions — to step in line with some idiotic unwritten rule that says only straight hair is acceptable and professional. Hair in its natural state is finally becoming more accepted, but experiences like Agyemfra's show there's still a painfully long way to go.

"I'm not going to compromise my roots and edges because my employer wants me to," she told the CBC. "My scalp has a right to breathe just as much as the woman standing beside me."

Candace Cameron Bure gets real about what keeps her marriage alive

Sex — and lots of it.

More: 11 things we learned about real relationships

"We have lots of sex!" the Fuller House star told In Touch in a new interview. "I’m gone half the week, so when I’m home, we have to keep things alive."

Bure and her former hockey pro hubby, who have three children — Natasha, 17, Lev, 16, and Maksim, 14 — also keep up a habit that many people dump after marriage.

"But listen — my husband and I like to have fun with each other. We flirt a lot!" she added.

She has a point: So many married couples succumb to the stressful parts of life — money, work, children — and they forget what brought them together in the first place. Keeping things spicy with date nights, flirting and "lots of sex" helps regain some of the fun parts that brought the couple together in the first place.

More: 6 differences between couples who make it out of a rut and those who don't

Bure sparked some controversy a few years ago when she said that they follow the "biblical" teachings of marriage and she defaults to her husband's decisions when it involves their family.

"I'm a very strong woman and an opinionated woman, but I don't think a marriage is at its best when you have two people vying for the same position, so someone has to yield at some point and ultimately I will defer to my husband," she said at the time.

"That's not to say he isn't constantly going, 'Well what do you think?' And we compromise on things, but ultimately he makes the decision," she added. "I know that makes him feel respected as the man of our home."

Sounds like the copious amounts of respect — and sex — are the not-so-secret secret to a long marriage!

Vanderpump Rules' Jax Taylor and Stassi Schroeder stun with finale decision

0

Minus James Kennedy, did some of the cast of Vanderpump Rules actually kind of mature during Season 4? Granted, they are all still ridiculous, have the most petty fights (i.e. like Lala Kent shoving Kristen Doute at Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz's engagement party) and are still getting arrested (ahem, Jax Taylor), but the conversations held between some of the cast members have been surprisingly civil.

More: Vanderpump Rules’ Kristen Doute, James Kennedy make relationship confession

Take that time Stassi Schroeder and Katie acted like adults, when the two finally sat down to talk after not being friends or speaking for a very long time. It was shocking! The same can be said for the Season 4 finale when Stassi and Jax had a somewhat calm and respectful conversation.

Since Season 1, these two have had their ups and downs. To say their former relationship was contentious would be an understatement. I mean, just look at the below GIF.

Jax Taylor and Stassi Schroeder
Image: Tumblr

Before I get to the light at the end of the Jax and Stassi tunnel, I can't leave out the part where they did bicker for a bit over Jax's lies, Jax cheating on Stassi and how horrible Stassi treated Jax (his words, not mine). Then, Jax did say this to her about why Stassi is all of a sudden wanting to be besties with everyone again: "I think things didn’t work out with your boyfriend. You were like, 'Shit, I lost all my friends, I need to, like, crawl back in.'"

More: Vanderpump Rules' Jax Taylor just proved he's jealous of Tom Sandoval

That might've been the smartest thing Jax has said all season long. Who wasn't thinking or voicing that exact same thing about Stassi this season? Don't pretend you weren't.

Anyway, back to them making nice. After everything they've gone through, Jax and Stassi came to an agreement on Monday night's finale episode. They are going to move past all of the drama, fights, tears and horrible things said and will at least be cordial to one another. They even shook hands. Whoa. Who would've ever thought that would happen?

Stassi even told Jax how much she likes his girlfriend, Brittany Cartwright, and that he had better not mess up what he has with her. Jax took it to heart, but who knows if he'll truly listen to Stassi.

Now all fans have to do is wait and see if Jax and Stassi will stay cordial during the Vanderpump Rules Season 4 reunion airing Monday, March 21 at 9/8c on Bravo.

The Voice's Pharrell astounds with unexpected drum performance (VIDEO)

It's not exactly a secret that the coaches on The Voice are amazing singers, but most viewers don't realize that many of them are also great instrumentalists. Pharrell certainly impressed tonight, when he showed off his mad skills on the drums.

Pharrell's awesome drumming occurred right at the beginning of tonight's episode, when all of the coaches joined up for a toe-tapping rendition of Stevie Wonder's classic hit "I Wish." Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine's vocals were great, of course, but Pharrell attracted the bulk of the attention when he was spotted on the drums. He had a huge smile on his face throughout the entire performance and appeared to be having the time of his life. The only person who could potentially look more delighted during a rendition of "I Wish" would be Stevie Wonder himself.

More: Gwen Stefani is gone from The Voice but definitely not forgotten

Viewers always enjoy hearing the coaches' amazing voices — and their other instrumental abilities — but this has been especially refreshing during Season 10, for, outside of a handful of great performances, viewers have largely been disappointed by this season's blind audition process. The contestants have a lot of promise, but thus far, most lack that special something that Jordan Smith had right away during Season 9.

Although they didn't have much good to say about the remainder of the blind auditions, viewers on social media spoke favorably of Pharrell's drumming. Several expressed their desire to see more of him on the drums in future episodes, in part because he seems so darn happy as a percussionist.

Kim Kardashian may have broken the Internet with her backside last year, but Tom Hiddleston is crashing it now.

The actor plays Jonathan Pine in the series, which is based on John le Carré's spy novel. It follows Hiddleston's character as he goes from European hotel manager to an intelligence agent infiltrating an international arms dealer's operation.

In this particular scene, Pine is finally making it happen with his love interest Jed Marshal. Up until this point in the show, the two have only had some steamy eye contact and one quick kiss before deciding to make things happen, all while Jed's boyfriend is downstairs.

If you're feeling frisky, you can watch the scene below. But be warned, it is NSFW.

As one tweeter pointed out, men shouldn't be objectified just as women shouldn't either. And, as Twitter showed, there's a fine line between appreciation and objectification.
