Want to let the younger crowd in your house in on the New Year's Eve celebration? Round up some age-appropriate fun for the kids and let them celebrate New Year's in their own way.

Party ideas for the under-21 crowd

Celebrity party planner Marley Majcher, aka The Party Goddess, offers one big piece of advice — preplan. "The less preplanning you do, the more the kids are in your hair the night of the party," says Majcher. "For the under-21 group because drinking is not part of the equation focus on three kid-friendly areas: Food, beverages and activities."

Party food

The food may be out for several hours, so select edibles that hold up over time. Majcher recommends tamales and tacos, pasta dishes, homemade pizza and kid-friendly wrap sandwiches and food bars.

  • Create a snack bar of bite-sized finger foods and include healthy options such as apple slices, veggies and string cheese. "Display them in a fun setting that draws kids in and makes them want to eat," says Majcher.
  • Set up a make-your-own s'mores table with different types of graham crackers, marshmallows, peanut butter and chocolates. Bonus: Food bars are perfect for picky kids, says Majcher. Consider a salad bar, an ice cream sundae bar or a top-your-own-cupcakes bar.

Party drinks

Beverages are the thing at many grown-ups' New Year's Eve parties, and kids want to imitate their parents. Choose a signature fancy beverage that everyone will enjoy, but provide options like juice boxes or bottled water.

  • Fill plastic versions of adult wine or champagne glasses with sparkling juices
  • Add light-up ice cubes to the kids' punch bowl
  • Create a hot chocolate martini bar — kids can add marshmallows, whipped cream and more

Party activities

The kids can eat and drink only so much, and planned party activities are a must. Since the main event doesn't happen until midnight, there are lots of hours to fill before that. Think of party activities that have something for everyone, and let older children supervise or lead the activities. Indoor games are a must-do for New Year's Eve, so plan ahead for lots of time inside.

Hourly surprise bags

For the younger set, the hours until midnight can really drag. Megan, a mom and entrepreneur, helps her family pass the time with hourly surprise bags.

"Add different times to the front of the bags," says Megan, "and when that time rolls around, find out what surprise activity the family can do!" For example, at 6 p.m., open fortune cookies, and at 7 p.m., make New Year's Eve hats.

"When it's time to ring in the new year," continues Megan, "the last bag could have poppers and confetti!" Making some noise to welcome New Year's is fun for all ages.

Photo booth

"Make your own photo opportunity with different backdrops," suggests Majcher. "Use props, costumes, dress-up items, a glam makeup station and a mock red carpet. Use disposable cameras or iPhones to snap paparazzi shots." If you use your digital camera or phone, you can easily see how the photos come out and email them to party goers. Older kids love to Instagram their photos, so they can quickly upload and send their photo booth shots.

"Use props, costumes, dress-up items, a glam makeup station and a mock red carpet."

White elephant gift exchange

Everyone brings something they don't want so they can regift, suggests Megan. "One man's junk is another man's treasure!" Exchanging gifts in this way makes it fun and takes the pressure off. Just the gift exchange — and subsequent trading — can take up a good chunk of time.

Music

Kids love to sing and dance. Make playlists of songs that most kids will recognize, and mix it up a bit. Majcher recommends setting up a karaoke machine for a sing-off or the Wii for a dance competition. You may need to coax a few to participate at first, but once they get going this will be a party hit everyone will love.

Quiet time

Hard-partying kids need some downtime too. Choose something they can watch on DVD for some much-needed rest for tired kids with full bellies. A short movie will give them enough time to recharge their batteries and move on to the next activity.

Celebrating your first New Year's Eve with Baby

Though you probably don't want to take your new baby to a loud party, there are plenty of other ways to celebrate the New Year with your little one. Make your New Year's Eve special and fun, even with a baby.

New Year's Eve baby

Watch the ball drop on television

Unless you can spend a fortune on a babysitter or have a family member in town who is willing to watch the baby, you might be staying in to watch Anderson Cooper ring in the New Year in Times Square. Don't fret because most new parents are in this position. To spice things up, plan a fun menu to cook together with your hubby or have some board games to play during the commercials.

Host a slumber party

If you have enough space at your home, there's no better time to have some close friends and their babies over for a classic slumber party. You can order pizza or host a potluck dinner. When the kids go to sleep, you can break open the champagne. The beauty of a slumber party is that no one has to worry about transportation when the festivities come to a close.

Invite your friends over

The easiest way for new parents to celebrate in pre-baby style is to bring the party to you. Invite other parents with babies and young kids. It can be a play date and New Year's Eve party rolled into one. Celebrate early, it's New Year's in other time zones after all, and you can maintain the family-friendly atmosphere.

Go out to an early dinner

Some babies can tolerate a short time in public without too much fussing. Plan an early dinner well before bedtime. You could also find a holiday event that is not overly long and slightly more mellow. Try to give your baby a nap, clean diaper and food right before the outing so she is content when you go.

Bring your baby to the party

If you really want to go out to a party, consider bringing your little one with you. This depends on what kind of party you'll be attending, of course. A loud, raging soiree is not an option, obviously. But it's acceptable to bring your baby to a gathering at a friend's home where there will be food, drinks and celebration. Just make sure your baby won't mind being around strangers and will stay happy for the most part. It's a big plus if the host has a secluded area where you can lay your baby down early. No one wants to ring in the New Year with a screaming baby.

Make plans for New Year's Day

Believe it or not, you don't have to be awake at midnight to celebrate the New Year. Instead, consider going to bed early and then celebrating on New Year's Day. Going out to a special family brunch or having friends over for appetizers and cocktails the next afternoon is a fabulous idea. You'll have something fun to look forward to and going to bed at an earlier hour won't seem so lame.

Matthew McConaughey clears up the baby confusion

Matthew McConaughey clears up the confusion about his new baby. It's a boy, not a girl!

Matthew McConaughey

After initial breaking news on Friday that Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, had added a little girl to their growing brood, it turns out that their new bundle of joy is a boy!

It's a good thing McConaughey was around to clear up the news.

The Magic Mike star wrote on his WhoSay page, "Camila Alves gave birth to our third child yesterday morning. Our son, Livingston Alves McConaughey was born at 7:43am on 12.28.12. He greeted the world at 9lbs. and 21 inches."

The actor continued, "Bless up and thank you for your well wishes. Happy New year, and just keep livin, Camila and Matthew McConaughey."

Baby Livingston caps off a banner year for McConaughey, who has seen both personal and professional success in 2012. He turned in outstanding character actor performances this year in Magic Mike and The Paperboy, right on the heels of excellent 2011 performances in Bernie and Killer Joe.

The baby boy joins his older siblings: Levi, age 4, and Vida, age 2-1/2. The couple were married in June, just before announcing their third pregnancy on July 4 on Twitter.

McConaughey told People this summer, "We decided to embrace the ritual of marriage as an opportunity and adventure we'll take together."

It seems like the two are on quite an adventure as a family of five.

In 2013, McConaughey will next be seen in Dallas Buyers Club, in a fact-based role that has been much documented by the media due to the 30-pound weight loss he undertook in preparation for the movie. He plays Ron Woodroof, who smuggled alternative drugs into the United States to treat AIDS patients like himself in the 1980s.

Charlie Sheen's homophobic slur

Charlie Sheen finds himself in trouble again. This time, he uttered a homophobic slur at a bar opening in Mexico.

Charlie Sheen

Just when you think he's going to keep his nose clean for a bit, Charlie Sheen manages to find himself in trouble again.

On Friday night, Sheen was down in Puerto Los Cabos, Mexico, to open his new rooftop bar, Sheenz, at the Hotel El Ganzo. The Anger Management actor was busy all night emceeing the event. He introduced some of the musical acts in front of guests like Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the former guitarist from Guns N' Roses, Slash.

At some point during the night, Sheen grabbed the mic and yelled out to the audience, "How we doing? Lying bunch of f**got a**holes, how we doing?"

Of course, this was all caught on video, which was posted by TMZ on Sunday morning.

The former Two and a Half Men star issued an apology to the gossip entertainment site, saying, "I meant no ill will and intended to hurt no one and I apologize if I offended anyone."

That apology might have been sincere if he had not added, "I meant to say maggot but I have a lisp."

However, in Sheen's defense, only a few audience members are heard booing at his statement. The rest of the audience seemed to stick with him despite the homophobic greeting.

It seems like the actor had a good time nonetheless, as he posted a photo with Mayor Villaraigosa and tweeted, "From Boyle Heights 2 Mayor of LA..! @hotelelganzo 2 party w/SHEEN at SheenZ..! Antonio Villaraigosa knows how to party!"

The mayor's rep, on the other hand, told TMZ that Villaraigosa has "no comment."

Even though Sheen has been on his best behavior as of late, it's probably a good idea to steer clear of the actor's winning antics.

Robin Roberts is planning her TV return in mid-2013

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts won't be returning to the airwaves until June 2013 as she continues on her path to good health.

Robin Roberts

If fans of Good Morning America were hoping to see anchor Robin Roberts at the beginning of the new year, they are going to have to wait a bit longer. TMZ is exclusively reporting that the anchor will not be able to return to the airwaves until May at the earliest, with June being more likely.

Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome  in the summer. The disease is a side effect from the chemotherapy she received to treat breast cancer in 2007. MDS attacks both the bone marrow and the blood.

Roberts' sister, Sally-Ann, successfully donated bone marrow to the GMA host after finding out the two were a perfect match. The surgery took place in August, but the immune system needs to be strong before the newscaster can safely return to work.

While it is rumored that ABC network executives would like to see Roberts in place for February sweeps, June seems to be a more realistic time frame that would be cleared by her doctors. The execs are clearly fighting to keep their ratings lead over the floundering Today Show on NBC.

The good news is that Roberts is on track and progressing nicely. She just hit the 100-day mark in her recovery, which also meant she could be reunited with her beloved pup, K.J. The Jack Russell Terrier was not allowed to be around Roberts because her immune system was so weak.

Roberts tweeted about their reunion, "Look who made it back for my 100 day celebration...KJ!! We just keep staring at each ..can't believe she's finally home."

A little puppy love is sure to lift any patient's spirits, so it's good to see Roberts on the mend. One thing is certain: Her return to GMA will bring huge ratings to the morning show. The Today Show crew are probably quaking in their boots right now.

Jessica Simpson bikini baby bump revealed

The Simpson sisters prove they are both hot stuff in Hawaii as photos of them in their bikinis surface on Sunday.

Jessica SimpsonJessica Simpson has certainly documented every minute of her vacation in Hawaii this holiday season. It started out with the Christmas Day announcement — and worst-kept secret in Hollywood — that she is indeed pregnant with baby No. 2.

Throughout the week, the Weight Watchers spokesperson has posted a variety of photos that show off her cleavage and her hidden, but burgeoning, baby bump. On Sunday, Simpson gave her Twitter followers the big reveal: the actual baby bump in a bikini.

She tweeted a self-portrait and wrote, "Bumpin' and Proud!"

The Fashion Star judge, sporting a print bikini and floral top in the photo, clearly looks well into the second trimester. She has not given an estimated due date, but last time around, it seemed as if the reality star was pregnant forever.

This will be the second baby for Simpson, as she gave birth to her first daughter, Maxwell, almost eight months ago.

Not to be outdone by her sister, Ashlee Simpson was also rocking a hot bikini along the shores of Hawaii today with Jessica's BFF, CaCee Cobb. Jess' younger sister was making waves in a teeny-tiny bikini to accentuate her flat stomach and lean body.

The recently single gal was having fun frolicking in the water with adorable son, Bronx, 4, in tow. Cobb, who recently married actor Donald Faison, is there with the Simpson family over the holiday season. The only person missing from the family vacation is dad, Joe Simpson. His wife of 34 years, Tina, filed for divorce from her husband back in October.

Hillary Clinton hospitalized with blood clot

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been hospitalized with a blood clot stemming from the concussion she received just a few weeks ago.

Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton, the secretary of state of the United States, has been hospitalized with a blood clot Sunday night, the State Department announced.

"Philippe Reines, a deputy assistant secretary, said in the statement that the clot stems from a concussion Clinton sustained several weeks ago," said NBC News. "Reines said that Clinton, 65, is being treated with anti-coagulants at New York–Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. She will be monitored there for the next 48 hours, he said."

Clinton received the concussion in early December after fainting during what was described as a bout of the flu. During the illness, she canceled a trip to Morocco.

"Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion," Reines said. "They will determine if any further action is required."

After news of Clinton's fainting in early December, the State Department said she was recovering at home, according to NBC News. Her doctors also released a statement at the time:

"Secretary Clinton developed a stomach virus, leading to extreme dehydration, and subsequently fainted. Over the course of this week we evaluated her and ultimately determined she had also sustained a concussion. We recommended that the Secretary continue to rest and avoid any strenuous activity, and strongly advised her to cancel all work events for the coming week. We will continue to monitor her progress as she makes a full recovery."

According to NBC News, Clinton also fainted back in 2005 during a speech in Buffalo, New York. At the time, she was also complaining of a stomach virus. The secretary of state has been on the sidelines since first complaining of the illness.

"The medical setback comes as Clinton is wrapping up her busy tenure as secretary of state, during which she has logged more than 400 travel days and nearly a million miles," said CNN. "She plans to step down from the post if and when Sen. John Kerry — President Barack Obama's choice to replace her — is confirmed by the Senate."

Reines did not say where the blood clot was located.

Kim Kardashian's preggo: What Kimye's news and the fiscal cliff have in common

$
0
0
What fiscal cliff? As the country’s biggest financial crisis in decades hangs in the balance, the Kardashians figure out a way to hijack headlines with Kim’s fertility. Yay! Just when we thought Christmas was over. Odd though it may be, these two life-changing events will have a profound impact on our country. And here’s why…

Kim Kardashian Kayne West

Whining

Anyone who has been watching the fiscal cliff progress has noticed a fair amount of whining with a healthy dose of blame-shifting. This one won’t play right, that one won’t do what he is supposed to do. As a result, we aren’t getting any fiscal cliff results. Kim Kardashian, who has perfected the art of whining, will likely be kicking it into high gear as her pregnancy progresses and she starts to experience back pain and sleepless nights. Though women for millions of years have shared these pregnancy symptoms, we’re going to have to hear about it as if KK is the first and only woman to be inconvenienced by the physical demands of a pregnancy. It’s going to be a long six months folks. Strap in.

Speculation

Regardless of which news program you’ve been tuning in to during the holiday break, here is what you have seen — talking heads. These “experts” don’t have any more information on what solution may or may not be reached for the fiscal cliff crisis, but that doesn’t keep them from speculating for days about it. We can expect the same from Kim’s pregnancy. Every photo that is taken of her will generate baseless speculation. Among the headlines we expect: “Kim pregnant with triplets,” "Kim pregnant with Kris Humphries' baby,"“Is it a girl?” “Is it a boy?” “What will Kim Kardashian’s baby’s name be?” “What will Kim Kardashian’s baby’s last name be?” Kimye’s pregnancy is guaranteed to inspire much talk about nothing.

Drama

The fiscal cliff has some real-life drama tied to it. Will we all go broke paying higher taxes? Will the elderly and poor suffer greatly from government cuts? We anticipate that any drama surrounding Kim’s impending labor and delivery will be mostly manufactured. If she gets gestational diabetes or toxemia like countless pregnant women do, it will be life-threatening, and she and her baby will barely escape with their lives. If she goes into premature labor, will her baby survive? Is there any way we can just convince Kimye to go away for a year ?

Money

The fiscal cliff disaster is about money — or more specifically, a lack thereof. Conversely the most infamous Kardashian’s baby will likely become another vehicle for the marketing/money-making machine that is the Kardashian family. We don’t mean that in a bad way, but we do anticipate a sexy line of maternity clothes, baby wear, and a line of nursery furniture. Don't be surprised if we see a Keeping Up with the Kardashians spin-off .

Have we just accidentally stumbled upon a solution that Congress and the president hasn’t considered? Perhaps the United States government could force Kimye to donate all the proceeds from baby K to the national debt! It probably would only take a year or two for the newest member of the Kardashian family to clear up $16 trillion dollars! Excuse us while we make a call to Washington, D.C.

Jennifer Lawrence talks reality TV and being "chubby"

We love Jennifer Lawrence. She's a "real" girl... and not just because she "looks chubby" on film.

Jennifer Lawrence at the Silver Linings Playbook premiereThe Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook star Jennifer Lawrence recently sat down with Marie ClaireSouth Africa, and the interview that followed was pretty great.

The South Africa edition of Marie Claire may be hard to find in the States, so we're sharing some of the best parts. However, if you want to read the whole thing, you may want to keep an eye out for it on their website. Oftentimes, interviews will post online once that issue is off the shelves.

The Kentucky Girl loves her television...

"It's like a reality TV show cave," Lawrence said of her Los Angeles apartment. "I just learned how to work TiVo. That changed my life."

She means it when she says she loves reality television, too. She told Marie Claire that when she's forced to go out with friends or to events, she mostly sits around thinking about what shows she's missing back at home.

"...When I'm out, I think about my couch. Like, 'It would be awesome to be on it right now. I bet there's an episode of Dance Moms on. Am I missing a new episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians? I'm just stressed by the idea of missing them," she said.

And what about her weight?

Hollywood is cruel. This isn't some new revelation. Since Jennifer Lawrence first popped onto the radar after the announcement of her role in The Hunger Games, her weight has been the topic of much discussion. The girl is not fat. However, because Lawrence isn't walking around on the legs of a heroine user, people tend to call her "chubby." The actress's thoughts on the matter?

"I'd rather look chubby on screen and like a person in real life," she told Marie Claire.

We'd rather her look like a real person, too.

See what we mean?

Jennifer Lawrence, in all her young but infinite wisdom, told Marie Claire that her New Year's resolution is to stand up for herself and no longer end up a doormat. We think she already seems like one smart, headstrong girl. We hope she stays real... and off reality television.

Hillary Clinton: Is it really cancer?

$

Hillary Clinton is in the hospital for a blood clot, showing up the conservatives who said she faked an illness and inciting whispers about just what could be wrong with the Secretary of State.

Hillary Clinton at a desk

Presidential administrations managed to hide Franklin Roosevelt's wheelchair and Ronald Reagan's Alzheimer's — is the Obama team attempting to hide Hillary Clinton's cancer?

That's the question some are asking today, with Clinton in the hospital for what the Associated Press called a blood clot stemming from a concussion she sustained in the middle of December.

Kent Sepkowitz, an infectious disease specialist in New York, writes in The Daily Beast that the White House's reports on Clinton's illness are "fishy."

Sepkowitz explains that a blood clot was unlikely to be caused by Clinton's December swoon, supposedly due to a stomach virus the Secretary of State had developed.

"Trauma to the leg or to the hips and pelvis might cause a clot," Sepkowitz writes, "but we were not told of any leg injury. If there is no predisposing trauma — well, that might mean real trouble."

Many cancers readily form blood clots, Sepkowitz explains, making him wonder if recent National Enquirer stories about Clinton having a brain tumor are actually credible.

He points out that Clinton hasn't really explained why she's leaving President Obama's cabinet, and has recently put on weight, which can be a side effect of treatments for certain cancers.

Obama bores Hillary Clinton to sleep>>

Thus the Enquirer's story "no longer seems to me as implausible as it did after the faint and concussion reports," Sepkowitz writes.

The Enquirer quotes a "source" who said Clinton has been suffering from "blinding headaches, problems with her vision and memory, plus terrifying blackouts."

Was she suffering from health problems in November when she fell asleep during Obama's speech in Myanmar?

Meanwhile, conservatives who criticized Clinton in December must be feeling pretty stupid this morning.

One former U.S. diplomat, John Bolton, said that Clinton's December fainting spell was a "diplomatic illness" contracted because the Secretary of State didn't want to testify before the House and Senate on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Libya.

It’s pretty easy to come up with New Year’s resolutions that target your wallet or your waistline. Resolving to give back can sometimes be more difficult, but it doesn’t have to be.

It’s pretty easy to come up with New Year’s resolutions that target your wallet or your waistline. Resolving to give back can sometimes be more difficult, but it doesn’t have to be.

Resolve to give back

When it comes to New Year's resolutions, we sometimes think only about ourselves. Resolve to be a little more selfless this year by reaching out to your community as a family. Here are some suggestions for socially responsible resolutions to get you started.

Explore your neighborhood

How well do you know your neighbors? An opportunity to give back is probably closer than you think. Maybe 2013 is the year you hit the pavement and shake some hands. If you have a favorite recipe for cookies or banana bread, whip up a few batches and deliver them to neighbors you don't know well. They'll probably be shocked by the gesture but you'll definitely make some people smile . Your small step will go far when it comes to improving the sense of community in your neighborhood.

Round up the change

In these difficult economic times, giving financially to a charity or nonprofit organization can be painful. But, we also have an opportunity to teach our kids about character when we struggle. Encourage your family to put extra change in a designated spot and then decide where to donate the money when it reaches a certain level. Let your kids know that even though the budget is tight, we can still help others.

Defend a cause

Do you have a favorite charity? Ask your family members to research some charities and local nonprofits and pick one they'd like to support. When your kids feel a personal connection to an organization that is giving back to the community or helping people in need, they will be more excited about giving of their own resources. Perhaps you can take turns volunteering at everyone's chosen organization or rotate a family donation.

Revamp your choices

There's no denying the fact that we're all consumers, but where we fall on the consumerism spectrum varies. Where do you rank when it comes to making wise choices with your purchasing power? Maybe you'd like to buy more locally-made or sustainable products this year. However you choose to revamp your choices, the important thing is to be cognizant of your purchases. Your kids will see that there's no joy in accumulating "stuff" and that every purchase should have a bit of thought behind it.

Share your skills

Maybe this is the year you resolve to discover and share your skills. We all have something to offer and it doesn't have to be money. Are you a skilled organizer, gifted writer or patient teacher? Kim Kardashian pregnant: We're "so blessed"

$

It is totally 100 percent official, straight from the horse's uterus: Kim Kardashian is pregnant, and she confirmed the news herself on her blog.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kanye West spilled the beans last night, but now it's absolutely, totally confirmed: Kim Kardashian is pregnant — she said so herself.

The reality star told fans that she has the next generation of pop culture in her womb with a blog post titled "New year, New Beginnings."

"It's true!! Kanye and I are expecting a baby," Kardashian wrote. "We feel so blessed and lucky and wish that in addition to both of our families, his mom and my dad could be here to celebrate this special time with us. Looking forward to great new beginnings in 2013 and to starting a family. Happy New Year!!! Xo"

Kim's father, Robert Kardashian — an attorney who represented O.J. Simpson in his famous murder trial — died of cancer in 2003. West's mother, Donda, a university professor, died in 2007 after botched plastic surgery.

The news was welcomed with huge excitement by Kim's family, who tweeted their joy over the family's newest cash cow as soon as Kanye spilled the beans himself.

"Oh BABY BABY BABY!!" momager Kris Jenner wrote.

Kourtney said, "Been wanting to shout from the rooftops with joy and now I can! Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!"

Khloé, who has long struggled with her own fertility, put her heartbreak aside to congratulate her sis. "Kimye!" she wrote. "Keeping secrets is hard with so many family members! Especially when you are so freaking excited!!!!! LOVE is everything!!!!"

Meanwhile, there's one small matter still left to be cleared up: Kim's divorce from Kris Humphries is far from final. The estranged pair is due in court in February 2013 to continue the proceedings after the basketball star accused Kardashian of defrauding him for TV ratings.

So far, Humphries has remained mum on this hot new development.

Okay. So, Matt Saracen got married and it wasn't to Coach T's daughter. Whatever. I'm not mad.

Zach Gilford marries Kiele SanchezFriday Night Lights star Zach Gilford tied the knot over the weekend with Keile Sanchez of The Glades and Lost.

Keile and Matt Zach met in 2010 on the set of The Matadors, an ABC flop. Gilford proposed in 2011, and the two married on Saturday in California. Gilford, who turns 31 in January, has never been married. However, 36-year-old Sanchez was previously married to writer and director Zach Helm . Hopefully, Sanchez and Gilford can have a more lasting marriage — Sanchez is pregnant and due in early 2013.

What else is in the store for the newlyweds?

Sanchez is still working on the set of A&E's The Glades. She plays Callie, a woman trying to raise a 13-year-old son while her husband is in jail... all while working as a nurse and attending medical school. Callie has another possible love interest in Det. Longworth , a Chicago cop who heads to south Florida and joins the state police. What ensues is lots of action and a little romance. The show was recently picked up for a fourth season.

Meanwhile, Gilford is about to return to the big screen alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand. The movie, to be released Jan. 18, 2013, also stars Forest Whitaker and Johnny Knoxville. Aside from playing Friday Night Lights' lovable underdog-turned-hero, Matt Saracen, Gilford also starred in the short-lived Off the Map with Mamie Gummer and Rachelle Lefevre. He then went on to star in The Mob Doctor, which was canceled in late November. For more Gilford action, you can also check out Post-Grad, where he co-stars with Gimore Girls' Alexis Bledel.

All the die-hard Friday Night Lights fans were hoping for a miracle in which Zach would marry his FNL co-star, Aimee Teegarden, and make our fan-fantasies come true. However, we're still incredibly happy for Gilford and Sanchez and wish them the very best!

Our girls need guidance

Telling your daughter she can do whatever she wants with her life might seem like the kind of encouragement she needs. But a new study says that what girls really need is career direction — and to truly understand that all career paths are open to them. That means it's time to get specific.

Telling your daughter she can do whatever she wants with her life might seem like the kind of encouragement she needs.

Helping our daughters find their future career

But a new study says that what girls really need is career direction — and to truly understand that all career paths are open to them. That means it's time to get specific.

Remember when you were a young girl and everyone asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up? The ubiquitous question is both hard and challenging, as girls get to know themselves — and explore what they may or may not like.

As a parent, it's tempting to tell our daughters that they can be whatever they want to be and leave it at that. However, a new study is showing that girls need more than that — they need parents to help them head in a direction of the right career for them.

Studying career thoughts

"Telling girls that they can do anything simply isn't enough."

The study by Simmons College and the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts looked at more than 1,600 middle school students in New England, New York and Pennsylvania. What researchers found was that middle school girls were less likely than boys to choose careers in STEM fields — only 10 percent of girls compared with 32 percent of boys.

What's more is that many of the girls didn't think their parents would want them to have a career in a STEM field — only 11 percent thought that would be something their parents would want for them.

Gender stereotypes

And perhaps most disturbing, 27 percent of girls and 35 percent of boys agreed with the statement that "boys have more career options than girls." Worst of all though, 55 percent of girls and 73 percent of boys also agreed with the statement that "there are some jobs that boys are better at than girls."

Seriously, is this 2012 or 1950?

"Despite 40 years of progress by women in the workforce and the best intentions of parents to encourage broad career aspirations, societal messages still have a major influence on attitudes about job opportunities based on gender," study co-author Mary Shapiro, a professor at the Simmons School of Management, stated. "When parents tell their middle schoolers 'do whatever makes you happy,' this message is being heard through gendered stereotypes about careers."

Telling girls that they can do anything simply isn't enough. We need to give them concrete ideas and show them that their strengths — whether it's in writing, science, engineering or something else entirely — can lead to a successful career. And moreover, we need to do this so that girls can look at all careers with an understanding that they can do anything boys can do.

Go for the strengths

When kids show an aptitude for something, that's a great place to start in guiding them toward a career they'll be successful in. "Parents can best offer guidance to their teenage daughters by letting them know what they and their teachers have noticed over the years as their natural abilities and strengths," says Meredith Liepelt, owner of Rich Life Marketing, a personal branding and marketing consultancy.

In the end, Liepelt says this can lead your daughter to a more rewarding career. "While it's possible to do most anything, finding a career that fits a girl's natural strengths, skills and talents will be much more rewarding to her than simply chasing a job because she has been told that she can do anything," says Liepelt.

Hollywood is in the money. Over the past 365 days, studios have grossed over $10 billion domestically. Thanks to hits like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, 2012 was one for the record books.

The Avengers

It's the last day of 2012, and we've got good news to report. Even though the U.S. economy's still trying to find its legs, some businesses are booming. The film industry had a record-breaking year thanks to its blockbuster box office.

According to EW, movie theaters grossed $10.84 billion in ticket sales. That number soars past the previous record of $10.59 billion, which was held by 2009 . If you think that's a big difference, 2012 left 2011 in the dust. This year's receipts were a 6.6 percent increase over last year's domestic box office of $10.17 billion.

So what did 2012 have up its sleeve? The schedule was filled with highly anticipated sequels that got a 3-D boost. Leading the charge was Marvel's The Avengers, the highest-grossing film of the year with $623.4 million in the United States and over $1.5 billion worldwide.

There was also The Dark Knight Rises, the final installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. The film earned $448.1 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide. Then there was the last hurrah for Twilight as Breaking Dawn — Part 2 hit theaters with $286.1 million.

Skyfall proved that James Bond still has the magic touch with its $289.6 million. Plus, a little film called The Hunger Games made itself known with a box office coup of $408 million. Not too shabby.

There's no doubt that 2013 will try to keep the momentum going with plenty of bookmark releases. On the superhero front, there's Iron Man 3,Man of Steel and Thor: The Dark World. Plus, more sequels like Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hangover: Part III are coming out.

Tips for picking
a baby name

If you are gearing up to pick the perfect baby name for your child in the upcoming year, it is time to brush up on these baby name resolutions. Whether this is your first child or third, you are expecting twins or are adopting, check out these tips for picking the perfect baby name.

Resolutions aren’t just about losing weight, organizing or getting out of debt. If you are expecting a baby and are searching for the perfect baby name, our baby name resolutions will help you avoid many of the common baby name mistakes many parents fall in to.

Tip: Check out our list of the top 100 baby names and try to steer away from the names at the top of the list if you are looking for a more unique name.

I will think outside the box

Most parents who regret their baby name choice say it is because they picked a name that was too popular. Not sure if your name is in danger of being overused? Pay attention to the names of the babies and kids at the parks or at stores. If you love the name Mason or Olivia, but have heard a couple of kids with that same name you might want to consider a different name — unless you don’t care that your name choice is a popular one.

I will think twice about picking a name with a weird spelling

Even though you may not necessarily want a popular name, there is something to be said for picking a name that is easy to pronounce and spell. If you name your child Ryan, but spell it Rian or decide to name your daughter Emileigh instead of Emily, be prepared for you to have to spell it out and pronounce it to friends, family, teachers... the list goes on.

The bottom line is when it comes to creative baby name spellings, what looks cool on paper doesn’t always translate well into the real world.

I will look to the past for ideas for the future

One baby name trend we love are old-fashioned or vintage baby names. Many of these classic names are easy to spell and pronounce, yet still sound unique and fresh. Some examples include Milo and Jack for boys or Pearl and Delilah for girls.

I will use the middle name as a buffer

If you pick an unusual baby name or one that has a different spelling, consider using the middle name as a buffer by picking a classic name that can be used if your child wants to as he or she grows up.

I will be inspired by celebrity baby names, but won’t copy them

Even though Beyoncé named her daughter Blue or Reese Witherspoon named her son Tennessee it doesn't mean you should too... unless you want people to say things like, “Oh, you named your son Kingston... like Gwen Stefani?”

You can be inspired by celebrity baby names, but think twice about copying them. For example, if you love how Reese picked a destination name, consider naming your son Austin or your daughter Brooklyn. Instead of naming your daughter Blue, you can name her Sage or Rose.

I won’t go with names that sound too much alike when naming twins

Things can get confusing fast if you name your twins names that sound too much alike, such as Hayden and Aidan or Ava and Ada. You can pick names with the same first letter, just make sure there is a clear distinction between the two, such as Madison and Max.

Special considerations when naming children who are adopted

Many parents who are searching for a name for a child they are adopting struggle with deciding if they should keep the birth name or change it. Although every circumstance is different, many parents have decided to incorporate their birth name as a middle name as a happy medium. If the child you are adopting is older, letting him weigh in on this decision is a good idea. Some may want to completely change their name, other children may want to hold on to it.

Chloe Sevigny's tryst with 3 men

The outspoken star of Big Love talks about her job this year with American Horror Story and why she wasn't crazy about her role but loved the preparations.

Chloe Sevigny

Chloe Sevigny loved being with three men at once.

Three makeup men, that is. The actress told Entertainment Weekly that the best part of coming to work at Ryan Murphy's scary hit series American Horror Story was the makeup room.

"It took four hours of makeup to get into character," Sevigny writes in Entertainment Weekly's year-end issue, summing up her 2012, "but there were three very kind, handsome makeup-artist men applying it. So there was a fantasy element of having three men touch you at the same time."

Sevigny's affection for the makeup masters was returned, apparently.

"They said I was one of the best actors they ever worked with. I was the most calm," she writes. "And I was like 'Well, who wouldn't be? This is fabulous!'"

Sevigny wasn't quite as pleased with her character on American Horror Story: Asylum, a woman who suffers a traumatic double amputation after she rejects a mad doctor.

"Okay, I have six episodes, and three out of the six I was gurgling," she writes. "I wanted more to do. I didn't just wanna be the gurgling monster. Like, I would have rather been Anne Frank or something meatier than just 'Gurgle, gurgle.'"

By now, AHS show runner Ryan Murphy has probably read of Sevigny's dissatisfaction and gotten annoyed by it. Or maybe he expects it — Sevigny has a reputation for being outspoken , a rarity in Hollywood where groomed-for-the-press platitudes reign supreme.

Sevigny told The Onion's AV Club in 2010 that Big Love's fourth season was "awful" and like a "telenovela."

Murphy himself is a bit of a firebrand — he had to apologize in 2011 after he dissed several bands, most notably Kings of Leon, for not allowing their music to get the Glee treatment on that other series he runs. Specifically, Murphy called the band "self-centered a**holes."

Teen Mom 2 divorce makes Kim K's marriage look long

Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans is reportedly getting divorced less than a month after marrying Courtland Rogers. It seems one phone call was all it took for the reality star to call it quits.

Jenelle Evans

News that a Teen Mom 2 divorce is in the works broke Sunday, just 26 days after Jenelle Evans and Courtland Rogers married!

Though it's doubtful she was trying for the dubious honor, the mother of Jace has found herself listed among the celebrity world's shortest marriages. Kim Kardashian, now pregnant with Kanye West's baby, was famously wed to Kris Humphries for just 72 days.

Oh, good: Teen Mom 2's Jenelle Evans is married>>

While most of us are not so surprised to hear Jenelle Evans' happily-ever-after hasn't worked out, her husband seems a bit shocked they're done.

Posting to Twitter, Courtland Rogers wrote of the drama, "So I just got broke up with because of talkin to my lil girl on the phone last night, finally getting to [hear] her tell me she loves dada! Wow."

It seems that while he was interested in talking to his daughter, Jenelle felt he was a little too happy to talk to his baby's mama — ex-girlfriend Taylor Lewis.

"So now I just lost my soulmate and my wife and my future," he went on to tweet. "I want my wife to realize that I have a daughter that I love and that [when] I hear her voice tell me she loves me it melt my heart."

Addressing his wife directly, Courtland Rogers begged, "I always loved u!! I got ur name tatted on my heart for gods sake we can talk this out ya know !! Damn jenelle."

Jenelle Evan's last posted tweet, from Dec. 30, reads simply, "Deactivating twitter. Bye."

If it's any sort of consolation to the Teen Mom 2 star, her time as Mrs. Rogers far outlasted the infamously short 55-hour marriage of Britney Spears and Jason Alexander.

Are you surprised to hear Teen Mom 2 Jenelle Evans' divorce news?
