Yes, it's science fiction/fantasy. But we promise Doctor Who is a great show even for people who hate sci-fi. The sometimes complicated plot twists make it ideal for Lostfans. The epic and ill-fated romances will lure in anyone who loves sex-soaked television drama . The quick-witted and fast-paced dialogue is reminiscent of shows like Gilmore Girls or anything by Aaron Sorkin. And, if you like any show that involves running from bad guys, Doctor Who was practically made for you. After all, one of the Doctor's most-repeated lines is, "Run!"

The annual Doctor Who Christmas special — this year titled "The Snowmen"— just aired and, while it does play on the show's past and present, you could easily watch it as a stand-alone during one of this week's replays on BBC America without any real spoilers or confusion. As a matter of fact, we highly recommend it: The usual Doctor Who dialogue is at its most fantastic and flirty, and it's also a chance to see the Doctor's new companion in all her glory.

Once you've watched "The Snowmen," you'll have a couple months before any new episodes air. In the meantime, we suggest catching up on seasons past. Here are a few things to keep in mind, though, when you pull up Doctor Who on Netflix or Amazon.

It's older than you realize

Doctor Who actually first aired in 1963, fifty years ago. Since the original airing, there have been 11 "Doctors." The Doctor from "The Snowmen" is often referred to as "Eleven" by fans because he is the 11th Doctor.

Don't worry! There's no need to start from the beginning

There was a long break in filming between 1989 and 2005. While the older, classic episodes are great , it's perfectly acceptable and actually quite common to start with the more modern episodes. When the show re-started in 2005, it was with Christopher Eccleston as "Nine."

Don't get too attached, though...

So, there have been 11 Doctors, right? Technically speaking, it's all the same guy: A lonely man from the planet Gallifrey who flies around time and space in a big blue box. Occasionally, however, the Doctor runs into trouble from which he can't escape. Instead of dying, he regenerates and a new actor takes over. Each actor brings his own special brand of awesome to the character, but they each take a little time to win your heart.

About the girl...

The Doctor always travels with a companion. He's been traveling for hundreds of years and that gets lonely. His companion is almost always a pretty girl and there's usually a little bit of a spark. That said, three well-loved companions have been Donna Noble , Wilf and Rory .

So try out "The Snowmen" this week. Fall in love with the not-quite-magical madman with a box. Doctor Who returns to BBC America with all new episodes in April 2013.

2012 certainly wasn't a good year for actor Nick Stahl. He went missing several times during the year after checking in and out of rehab and now, he's ending the year with an arrest.

On Thursday, the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines star was arrested for "touching himself" in a porn store, according to TMZ. The store is located in Hollywood and is part of the regular beat for LAPD undercover vice officers.

During a routine check, Stahl was found in a private booth while watching an adult film. While that isn't illegal, the act of "touching himself" is. He was booked on a misdemeanor for lewd conduct and released from police custody later that night.

TMZ caught his release from the station on camera. Stahl didn't seem too happy to see the paparazzi there. The 33-year-old likened his arrest to a "misunderstanding."

Another interesting note is that his wife, actress Rose Murphy, was nowhere to be found. Stahl left the station alone. Murphy has been a longtime supporter of her husband despite his consistent substance abuse problems. In May, after his first disappearance from rehab, she told E! News, "He wants to be well. He's a good man and we want him home so we can help him."

While the actor has remained out of the news since his second disappearance in June, we're certain he didn't want to end his 2012 this way. The good news is that a new year is just around the corner, Nick.

It isn't easy being the villain in morning television. After the Today Show fiasco over the summer that included the ouster of anchor Ann Curry, Matt Lauer is finding that the aftermath is messy.

TMZ reported on Thursday that Lauer is being tortured by public taunts over his involvement in getting Curry fired. Everything from "You got Ann fired. Does that make you happy?" to "You're a bad guy," is being yelled at him on the streets of New York, where the show is based.

The longtime anchor is reportedly "freaked out" over the reaction. The 54-year-old doesn't think he should be blamed for Curry's job loss. However, multiple sources reported the rumor that a new female anchor was a big part of Lauer's contract negotiations in 2012.

Another point of contention with viewers is his $25 million salary. As the media reported on the Today Show saga for months, Lauer's salary was also leaked during this time. New Yorkers are tough, and they continually make sarcastic remarks about his worth.

This reaction should come as no surprise though. The Today Show has lost its hold in the ratings as the No. 1 show in morning television. ABC's Good Morning America stole the lead from Today as viewers ran away from the off-screen drama happening at the peacock network.

Despite the ratings drop, there will be no major changes to the anchor lineup for now. Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, Curry's replacement, are here to stay. The new addition to the 9:00 a.m. show, Willie Geist, might be a future replacement,but a source told TMZ, "He's not ready. He's not there yet."

As for Curry, she has been reporting on both domestic and international issues for NBC News, including the recent Newtown, Connecticut, shooting. It is rumored that CNN is courting her now that her former Today Show boss, Jeff Zucker, has taken the reins at the Atlanta-based news outlet.

In the meantime, Lauer is going to have to put on a brave face in the mean streets of Manhattan while cashing his $25 million check. He can handle it.

This just might be teenage pop star overload. When you're young and rich and famous, you probably just hang out with other young, rich and famous people. Case in point: the Bieber-Gomez double vacay date with Taylor Swift and One Direction's Harry Styles. The group was spotted looking winter-chic in Park City, Utah. According to People magazine, both couples lodged at the luxury complex The Colony, but Gomez and Bieber stayed in a separate rental home than Swift and Styles.

The celebrity magazine also reported that while Swift and Styles hit the slopes together, Gomez opted for a ski lesson, and Bieber went snowboarding with his bodyguards.

Meanwhile, it looks like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are back together. Gomez and Bieber suffered a very public breakup back in November, but the press reported the pair had mended their relationship right around the time Bieber seemed to serenade Gomez during the American Music Awards. Then the couple was seen just before Thanksgiving at Gomez's house and meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Ealier this month, paparazzi snapped photos of Justin Bieber in a new white Ferrari after he spent the night at Gomez's home.

Hopefully Park City, Utah, is ready for the teenage pop group vacay of the world's hottest young musicans at the moment: a Bieber-Gomez-Swift-Styles snowy playdate.

Filet mignon with chestnut cream sauce recipe

Serves 6

Ingredients:

• 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
• 1 shallot, diced
• 1/2 carrot, diced
• 1 stalk celery, diced
• 1 clove garlic
• 1/2 pound chestnuts, roasted and peeled
• 1/4 cup red wine
• 1 cup chicken stock
• 1/4 cup heavy cream, plus more as needed
• 6 filet mignons
• Salt and pepper

Directions:

1. In a saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sweat the shallots, celery, carrots and garlic until tender. Add the chestnuts and deglaze the pan with red wine.
2. Add the chicken stock and allow the sauce to simmer, covered, for 15 minutes.
3. Puree the ingredients in a blender and return to the pan. Stir in the heavy cream and add more as needed to reach the desired sauce consistency. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Season both sides of the filets with a generous amount of salt and pepper. When the oil is shimmering, sear both sides of the meat. Once seared, place the pan in the oven and finish cooking the steaks until they reach the desired level of doneness.
5. Serve with the sauce.

We're five days from 2013, so why don't we reflect on the five worst songs that we've witnessed this past year?

Now, I am always loaded with opinions and never shy away from expressing my biases, but this time, I wanted to research what you thought throughout this year. I took a chance and asked a few friends to gather inspiration for the list below. What did they say, you ask? The choices were all too easy , because there was an overload of Bieber hate followed quickly by One Direction–inspired insults.

So, I scoured the inter-waves, scraped the skin of gossip sites and soaked myself in the sea of music reviews. What you see below is what the masses have said.

What emerged? Pretty much what I already thought. It's always hard to agree on what is good, but it's ironically easy to unanimously agree on the irritating.

#5: "Goin' In"— Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez. That's a household name. Vivacious, strong, independent and talented. Now, after you have an unstoppable hit like "Dance Again," the stakes are high. And "Goin' In" was not a fair follow-up. The video was entertaining , but the song itself was just meh. I hate to put her on this list, but for taking us up so high with the singles she was releasing, only to drop us so low — sorry JLo.

#4: "Instagram That Hoe"— Fat Joe feat. Rick Ross

Oh, no no no. Fat Joe, please "lean back" so far that you disappear again. I hadn't heard his music in a while, but he's got a decent flow, his style is unique and I'm always up for new music. However, the title already had this single dubbed a "loser." Instagram? Really? Sorry, then you pair it up with the most respectable word "hoe," and wow, you have the makings for an alluring hit right there. Press play, because he's the best person to depict his own ruin — and degrade any respect you may have for him.

#3: "Payphone"— Maroon 5 feat. Wiz Khalifa

Normally, I think Adam Levine's voice is pained and beautiful, but in this case, it sounds whiny and miserable. I want to sing along, but then I end up changing the radio station. I cannot help but curse his godly beauty. I would love for someone to send me a comment about a deeper meaning to this song, other than the fact that "payphone" rhymes with "home." Jokes aside, the lyrics aren't that bad, and Wiz does make for a good addition. However, this song just doesn't do justice to Levine's musical prowess.

#2: "Kim Kardashian"— Soulja Boy

You know how BET's late-night programming features raunchy music videos and subpar rappers? I can't understand why Soulja Boy has fans, but if you've heard this song, you'll know why you aren't one of them. A repetitive phrase dominates the song — what phrase is it? "Kim Kardashian" repeated. Over. And over. This doesn't really warrant an explanation other than...

#1: "Stupid Hoe"— Nicki Minaj

Dear Nicki, why do you make it so easy to make fun of you? Are your attempts at Barbie-likeness only trying to bite the bullet before we bullies annihilate you? If hiding behind your mask of makeup wasn't bad before, now you will need it — because this song is just a downright outrage. It's nonsensical or, rather, unimaginative and annoying. I wish this were a horrible song I could at least sing along to, like Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe." Alas, you manage to make me even more disappointed in you.

The year 2012 could have been a big year to celebrate for one reason: It marks the 40th anniversary of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. Instead, 2012's end-of-year celebration will be big for a much different reason. This will be the very first episode of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve since Dick Clark's passing in April of 2012. Ryan Seacrest co-hosted alongside Clark starting in 2005. This year will be his first going solo on New Year's Eve.

Is he ready for it? Of course!

However, to help him along, he'll have two bombshells to help ring in the New Year with some much needed sex appeal. Joining him in the celebrations are The Black Eyed Peas' Fergie and actress Jenny McCarthy. Things are bound to get loud with the addition of those two.

But Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve has never really been about the host. It's about the entertainment! And this year's lineup is stellar.

The biggest name on the show's list? Taylor Swift. The 23-year-old country/pop songstress has plenty worth celebrating. Her new album, RED, has done extremely well on the charts. She'll go into 2013 as Billboard's reigning princess if her album continues to hold on to the No. 1 spot.

T-Swift isn't the only big name dropping by NYC on NYE. Carly Rae Jepsen will also perform. Jepsen has had a pretty spectacular year herself. Her slightly annoying but oh-so-fun single "Call Me Maybe" has been all over the radio.

New Year's Rockin' Eve will also include performances from Neon Trees, Pitbull, OneRepublic, Karmin, Brandy and Flo Rida. Plus, ABC is promising even more artists to be announced closer to the show!

Don't forget, just because it's midnight in New York doesn't mean the party is over. Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve will carry on for another two hours after the ball drops at midnight in Times Square! Grab your sparkly top hat and your 2-0-1-3 sunglasses and tune in for a night of music and celebration!

Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, are ending the year with one more mouth to feed. Their third child was born Friday morning in Austin, Texas.

The couple kept with tradition and did not learn the sex of the baby ahead of time. Joining big brother Levi, 4, and big sister Vida, 3, is a baby girl. Neither the name nor weight of the baby were released right away.

The third pregnancy for the McConaughey family came on the heels of Matthew and Camila's wedding in June. The couple married after six years together. The ceremony was a down-home affair with camping, Southern comfort food prepared by celebrity chef Guy Fieri and lots of dancing and partying.

A guest who attended the wedding told Us Weekly,"You could definitely tell [Matthew] was in love. It was a great night for everyone."

Less than a month later, McConaughey announced on Independence Day that his wife was expecting another baby. He tweeted the news: "Happy birthday America, more good news, Camila and I are expecting our 3rd child."

The Magic Mike star has had a particularly stellar year on the big screen with a turn as a male strip club owner in the Channing Tatum film, generating some of the best reviews of his career. He also earned praise for his work in the dark comedies Bernie and Killer Joe.

Currently, McConaughey has been generating a lot of buzz for the tremendous weight loss he underwent for his role as an AIDS patient in the upcoming film The Dallas Buyers Club. He reportedly lost 30 pounds, and the actor looked emaciated in many paparazzi photos last fall.

She begged Shia to ask [director Lars von Trier] if [was] possible to make the scenes appear real, rather than shoot them real." LaBeouf has yet to confirm his relationship with Goth. Nymphomaniac is set for release in 2013. To get the lead role, he told USA Today he had to email pictures of his um, goods, for casting. LaBeouf also explained that his decision to star in Nymphomaniac is a career move intended to shift focus away from his big-budget but weak-character roles in Transformers.

"All I'm really trying to say in the most politically sensible way is, 'Thank you for giving me the opportunities, I would just like to make movies about people now.' That's it." LaBeouf continued, "If I could give the money back and get all the credibility in the world that I'm seeking, I would do it tomorrow. In a heartbeat."

We're not entirely sure filming real sex scenes is the best way to go, but we can understand LaBeouf's thinking. Hopefully his new relationship will be a positive outcome of filming Nymphomaniac, even if he doesn't receive the critical praise he's looking for.

Achieving a strong body takes more than just lifting a few free weights or taking a kettlebell class here and there. There are many factors that go into toning and building muscle, and we’re sharing our best tips on getting the strongest body of your life.

To learn more, we asked Travis Steffen, a certified strength and conditioning specialist with a master’s degree in exercise science, and creator of WorkoutBox.com, for his best advice on building a stronger body.

Benefits of strength training

You may jog every morning, you may have the best form in your cardio kickboxing class, but if you're not including strength training in your workout routine, you're never going to be as strong as you can be. "Regardless of your gender or your goal, strength training should never be absent from your routine,” says Steffen. “There are very few, if any, things that it won't help you improve upon.”

Not only will you see an increased metabolic rate when you build a stronger body, which can help you burn more body fat at rest, there are a whole host of other benefits to regular strength training. “You'll see increases in bone, joint and connective tissue strength and resistance to injury, you'll be able to reduce lower back pain by strengthening your abdominals and hamstrings via resistance training, you'll improve your quality and ease of sleep, and you'll improve performance in nearly everything you do,” Steffen says.

Strong body essentials

When it comes to developing a strong, healthy body, many factors contribute to results, and having the right plan and being consistent are two of the most important, says Steffen. “The right plan is one that's been scientifically designed by a highly qualified professional for your goal, ability level and the equipment you have available,” he explains. “This needs to factor in both your training plan and your nutrition plan. I'd say nutrition is arguably more effective than the training itself, and the two combined are extremely powerful.”

Consistency essentially means following that plan outlined for you on an ongoing basis. If you do, Steffen says that you can expect fairly rapid results. But be reasonable: “Don't expect those results will be you looking like a cover model. That can take years of consistency, but you can start seeing results right away if you consistently do the right things.”

Mistakes to avoid

If you really want to see results and know your hard work is paying off, there are some mistakes you need to avoid and bad habits to steer clear of. One of the most common strength training mistakes is placing too much focus on single-joint upper-body movements like curls, explains Steffen. “If you want to get stronger in an overall sense, prioritize multi-joint weight bearing movements,” he advises. These include full barbell squats and deadlifts, which he refers to as “go-to movements.” With these exercises you get what Steffen describes as “maximal fiber recruitment and increased hormone release,” which will boost the effectiveness of all of the other movements you're performing.

Another major mistake Steffen points out is trying to spot-target. “Many people want bigger arms or a bigger chest or a slimmer waist and decide to only focus their efforts on that one area, but this isn't really how it works,” he explains. “You'll get far better results in that one area by focusing on building a better physique overall. Spot-targeting is not only ineffective, but it can lead to muscular imbalances that can increase your risk of injury.”

Other factors to consider

Building the strongest body of your life isn’t just about pumping iron. There are other things that contribute to building strength. “Nutrition is definitely the major factor,” says Steffen. “You need to be eating the right things in the right amounts at the right times and with the right frequency, and you need to do this consistently.” Talk to a dietitian or nutritionist who can help you come up with a meal plan based on your training goals.

Incorporating different types of training is also important. Don't just stick to the weight room. “Go do some yoga. Go do some body-weight training. Get out and play some organized sports and use your body in various other ways,” Steffen advises. “Not only will you work your muscles in a variety of different ways, but you'll also increase your ability to stick to your plan, as the variety keeps things interesting for you.”

Cardio can also play a role when it comes to building a stronger body. “Decreasing your rest periods between sets, increasing your rep count and performing more sets per movement can help integrate a cardiovascular component into your resistance training,” Steffen explains. “Performing compound sets, super sets, drop sets and circuits can also help combine the two.”

Book a session or two with a personal trainer at your gym to get a better sense of what you need to improve overall strength and muscle tone.

Hey, buck up boys… if you ever needed proof that funny guys don’t finish last, just look to Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde. He’s known for his comic chops, while she’s known for being obscenely hot. Personally, we like the pairing much more than Sudeikis' last relationship with January Jones — we suspect "guys' girl" Wilde, who cops to things like winning eating contests and swilling beer, is a much better match for Sudeikis' slapstick style. And, since she recently called him "the love of my life" in the Twittersphere, we have high hopes the cute couple will be rocking right through 2013.

How could you walk away from someone who promises to keep making you banana milkshakes the rest of your life? Such was the question we all asked when Brad Pitt left first wife Jennifer Aniston jilted after five years of holy matrimony. Apparently Angelina’s milkshakes were, ahem, more appealing. Since then, we’ve commiserated as unlucky-in-love Aniston has maintained her trademark pluck through a string of unsuccessful relationships. So when she and actor Justin Theroux went from hot and heavy to on-the-way-to-hitched, we all crossed our fingers our favorite Friend will finally find her happily ever after.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling

We’re gonna go ahead and file Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling under the guilty pleasures category. Their union doesn’t give us quite the same warm and fuzzies we got when Gosling was canoodling with The Notebook costar Rachel McAdams , but looking at them is a pleasurable enough way to pass time. Plus, it’s a win-win when it comes to your own relationship — your significant other can’t heckle you for poring over magazine pages featuring Ryan, since we all know he is sneaking peeks at Eva on Ryan’s arm.

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom

With more rumors circulating about the veracity of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom’s marriage than there are theories about what fillers Kim Kardashian plumps her a** with, it’s kind of amazing the press-plagued pair has managed to rack up several years as Mr and Mrs. The latest gossip rag headlines include fodder of impending divorce, failed pregnancies and Lamar dancing suggestively with other women. However, for fans of the couple’s hit show Khloe & Lamar, such stories about the down-to-earth duo seem far-fetched at best.

So Katt Williams may be losing his mind. Williams, a 43-year-old stand-up comedian who is infamous for raunchy material, was arrested Friday night after law enforcement in Los Angeles, California, searched his home and found it really unsafe for his children.

Technically, Katt Williams was arrested for child endangerment. According to Shouse Law Group, child endangerment refers to criminal acts that place children in dangerous situations without making an effort to protect them. The crime can occur even when children are not injured. Williams was arrested after police found several guns and illegal drugs throughout the house.

TMZ reports that Williams is still in jail with a $100,000 bail and his kids are in protective custody. Katt Williams' latest legal trouble means he faces the real possibility of felony charges. He is set to go before a judge next week.

Katt Williams' arrest is just the last stop on a downward spiral of odd behavior, which has sparked concern the comedian and actor may not be mentally well. In December, Katt threw his microphone at least once at a fan he believed was badgering him, and he was handcuffed outside a Subway store after an incident with LA police involving illegally parking next to a fire hydrant. Williams was also just hit with a $4 million lawsuit from the IRS for back taxes. Merry Christmas!

We can also go way back to 2006, when Katt Williams was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon — which later turned out to be a stolen firearm — in his luggage at LAX. Most recently, Williams was arrested in early December 2012 after leading LA police on a car chase after failing to stop at the scene of an accident. A warrant was issued for his arrest — which brings us full circle: The warrant is likely why, on Friday night, law enforcement showed up at Katt's door in Woodland Hills, California, and presumably found probable cause to believe his four kids were in imminent danger.

Here's wishing Katt Williams a very happy New Year, and we propose he make a resolution to stop getting arrested.

Are you ready to fist-pump your way into 2013? That's exactly what MTV has planned for New Year's Eve.

MTV plans on bringing "the club" straight into your living room. Jersey Shore vets Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley will host an incredibly rowdy Club NYE 2013. This appears to be MTV's answer to Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.

The two party girls from MTV's insanely popular and finally canceled show, Jersey Shore, will host an hour of Jersey-accented, short-skirted fun in New York City's Times Square.

So, aside from nuclear orange skin tones and lots and lots of animal prints, what else can you expect from MTV's New Year's Eve celebration? Believe it or not, there will actually be music!

Club NYE 2013 has pulled in some pretty decent Top 40 pop artists this year. MTV is promising performances from Ke$ha, Ne-Yo, Conor Maynard, Sean Kingston and Rita Ora. Sweet!

Two things you shouldn't expect: sobriety... and Ke$ha's former big hit "Die Young." The song took a huge dip in radio play after Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. It's a shame, really, because it's actually a pretty spectacular and dance-inducing pop song. Oh, well. Her newest single, "C'mon," is a fairly typical Ke$ha song though, so it's bound to keep the party/club pumpin' for just a little longer. Check it out...

True story: We kind of love this song.

If Ryan Seacrest's Dick Clark festivities require a glittery top hat and 2-0-1-3 glasses, Club NYE 2013 requires glitter face paint, platform heels and a few too many Jager bombs.

Go with food that's in season! It has the best flavor and might also give you a chance to try new recipes. Acorn squash offers the perfect opportunity to try a winter weather vegetable. It's easy to make, and that's just one reason to try it for Sunday dinner. You'll love the presentation of this dish, too!

Acorn squash with wild rice recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

• 2 acorn squash, washed
• 2 cups cooked wild rice
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 shallot, minced
• 1/2 cup dried cranberries
• 1/2 cup toasted walnuts, chopped
• 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
• 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
• 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus 1/4 teaspoon for seasoning squash
• 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, plus 1/4 teaspoon for seasoning squash

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F.
2. Sliced squash in half, lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp and discard.
3. Drizzle the insides of the squash with 1 tablespoon olive oil and season with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.
4. Place squash on a baking sheet, cut side down, and bake for about 30-40 minutes or until soft when pierced with a fork.
5. Meanwhile, cook your wild rice, then set aside.
6. In a large saute pan, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. When hot, add the shallot and garlic, salt, pepper and sage, and mix well.
7. Add the rice to the shallot mixture, just to heat it through, along with the walnuts and cranberries. Mix well and remove from the heat.
8. When the squash are finished baking, place on a platter, cut side up, and fill each half with the rice mixture. You will have some extra rice to serve on the side.
9. Serve warm.
