More: Brooks Ayers' new tell-all book will be lacking details fans want most

Photos hit social media over the weekend showing The Real Housewives of Orange County star Gunvalson getting suspiciously cozy with a mystery man while on a trip to Scottsdale, Arizona, immediately setting off a flurry of boyfriend rumors. But who is Gunvalson's cowboy hat-wearing new friend? Here's what we know about him so far.

1. His name is Jack Losey

Some A+ sleuthing by Starcasm.net reveals that his full name is Jack Losey — or it appears to be, based on a Facebook profile for a Jack Losey who looks just like the man in Gunvalson's photos.

2. He works for a big-shot construction company

According to his Facebook profile, Losey is a superintendent for Big-D Construction, a 600-employee firm with locations in several western states that averages $600 million in revenue yearly.

3. He's a real cowboy

Losey grew up on a small farm, according to an aerial photo of his childhood home that he shared on Facebook. He says the farm is located west of Cherry, Illinois, which would put it in the northwestern part of the state.

4. He's not very active online

Losey appears to have an Instagram account, but he only follows two people — Gunvalson and one of his sons — and he's only posted three photos so far. His Facebook account is carefully hidden by privacy settings and he doesn't appear to have any other social media accounts.

More: Vicki Gunvalson and Brooks Ayers still have 2 alarmingly different stories

5. He's a big-time family man

All of Losey's public photos on Facebook include one or more of his kids, and his two boys even joined him and Gunvalson during their PDA-filled night out in Scottsdale.

6. He's definitely infatuated with Gunvalson

According to one Instagram caption, Losey thinks, "She looks damn good in a hat!!"

Vicki Gunvalson 2

7. And this definitely isn't the first time they've hung out

Gunvalson captioned one of her Instagram snaps from the evening, "Last night in Scottsdale. Thanks Jack for dinner and dancing at our favorite place. #tripisending, #allworknoplayisboring." It can't be their favorite place unless they've been there together before, right?

8. All signs point to them dating

Neither has officially confirmed that they're a couple, but one picture of Gunvalson and Losey publicly locking lips has the caption, "Date night one …success." If they consider it a date, we consider it a date. These two are definitely dating.

8 Ways The Magicians is the adult version of Harry Potter

$
0
0

1. The universe of The Magicians includes people who possess magical abilities — and people who do not

This is a universe of muggles and wizards — though they may not call themselves by those terms. Magical abilities aren't always obvious to the people who possess them and education can help to hone such skills, but The Magicians is a universe where magic is innate, not acquired.

2. Brakebills is the new Hogwarts

Though the magicians-in-training are students, Brakebills isn't an elementary or high school — it's a university. The full name is Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, and it's basically what Hogwarts would have been if Harry and the gang had discovered their abilities a bit later in life.

More: 18 Things J.K. Rowling has revealed about Harry Potter this year

3. Quentin Coldwater is Harry minus the glasses

Don't worry, Quentin's as brainy as Harry was — but he's got a much more sophisticated look. He's mature, though a bit sullen, and he's got a dark past. As the protagonist of the show, he's likely to have some of Harry's kindness and commitment to doing the right thing, but the extra life experience has given him a bit of an edge that comes through in his appearance and in his personality. Oh, and he's got a prophetic destiny — though he doesn't quite understand that at first.

4. It's an ensemble effort

There are not likely to be direct stand-ins for Ron, Hermione and the others, but this isn't just Quentin's show. When he arrives at Brakebills, he meets a whole group of fellow students who are also learning to hone their magic skills. There's also Julia, the friend he's left behind who failed the Brakesbills entrance exam, whose journey will also be critical to the progression of the series.

5. There's some evil that accompanies the good in the world of magic

Certainly, Harry Potter's universe got much darker as he and his peers (and the readers!) aged and acquired more life experience and perspective. But since the students in The Magicians are already grownups, expect the darkness and fear to set in pretty early in the game.

6. Not all of the magical beings are human

You might not find it in a copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but early on, the Brakebills students do encounter a creature named The Beast. Chances are, he won't be the last mystical being that they come across in their studies and in the real world.

7. There's a deeper mystery at play

We didn't know Harry's full story from day one, and clearly, there's a lot more to Quentin's story than we'll get right away. But there is a deeper mystery involved in understanding Quentin's history (and future), as well as his role at Brakebills, more of which will gradually be revealed over time.

More: Harry Potter fans are making us believe in magic with this cool new trend

8. Not everyone is supportive of the work of Brakebills

Julia may have been rejected by Brakebills, but there is a different group that has an eye on her for membership. Is this secret society another educational institution like Brakebills? Or is there something a bit more sinister going on with them?

Can't wait to know more? Tune into The Magicians when it premieres on Syfy tonight at 9pm/8c!

Smart cars are harvesting your data

More: Gigi Hadid's privacy is in jeopardy after illegal phone hack

A recent study, by The BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association, questions just "who is in the driver's seat" when it comes to owning a smart car.

"The same technologies that allow for safer, more convenient and entertaining vehicles are also capable of amassing vast databases of information about drivers and analyzing that data in order to generate 'actionable insights,'" write the researchers. And just why does it matter if your car knows that you drove it home last night at 3 a.m., narrowly missed hitting a pigeon on your way home? Who would possibly care about that?

Lots of people apparently. For one, how you drive your car can actually affect your insurance rates, as smart cars can measure your "distance driven, time of day driven, as well as acceleration, braking, speed and cornering," explain the study authors. For some, this can all work in their favor, as your car sends data wirelessly to your insurer: "Discounts of up to 30% are typically offered for drivers who drive less overall, who do not drive between midnight and 5 a.m., and who refrain from sudden braking and acceleration." But if you work the night shift, or have a heavy foot when it comes to braking, you're probably not going to appreciate owning a car that rats you out.

Connected cars are also increasingly sharing information with advertisers. For instance, the mobile advertising company Kiip can connect with your car to offer you targeted ads at certain moments of the day, whether “you get to your meeting early and you should get a free coffee from the place around the block” Michael Sprague, Kiip's head of partnerships explains in MIT Technology Review, or “you just logged 100 miles on a road trip; your phone says, ‘Here’s a Red Bull.’”

More: Do moms really need an app to make friends?

Our cars are learning more about us every day

The ways our cars reach into our lives is growing by the day. And now companies like Ford and Mercedes-Benz have even offered drivers the option of linking their car up with Google Nest — your car is actually able to communicate with your house directly. It can open and close garage doors or even connect to thermostats.

Some employers are even taking advantage of the new trend in collapsing privacy on the road, installing dash cams into cars to help monitor employees. Brick House Security markets its cameras as “a great way to make sure your teen driver or employee is doing the right thing behind the wheel. Dash cams are also great for providing evidence in case of an accident or insurance dispute."

What if we don't want our cars to spy on us?

But what about those of us who are creeped out by the fact that our cars seem to be spying on us? While you can always choose not to connect your car with optional apps, the study authors point out that soon consumers won't have a choice; connected cars are quickly becoming the new normal. The study authors are calling out for the creation of a set of data-collection rules for smart cars.

"Cars are private places in which Canadians spend a great deal of time and conduct a great deal of personal business," they write. "According to the Supreme Court of Canada, it is exactly this kind of data in which, Canadians have a reasonable expectation of privacy."

More: Kim Richards' ex remains positive despite his journey coming to an end

News broke Sunday of the tragic death of her ex-husband, Monty Brinson, after a battle with cancer. Richards had yet to speak publicly about Brinson's passing, until Monday afternoon, when she posted a sweet photo of him and reminisced about their love.

"Yesterday I said goodbye to the best friend I've ever had in my life…Monty was an amazing person with an amazing soul," she wrote alongside the photo, which showed her and Brinson dancing at their daughter Brooke Brinson's wedding in 2014. "We shared over 30 years of love & happiness and brought a beautiful daughter into the world. I am so grateful for all that we shared. I know we will be together again one day. I love you Monty."

She continued, "My angel in heaven…and I know that we will be together again one day. I will carry you in my heart always my love…until then, may you rest in peace."

Richards' brother-in-law broke the news of Brinson's passing on Sunday, releasing a statement that read, "We have lost Monty Brinson after a brave battle with cancer. His heart was as big as the moon and he was loved by all he met. He will be sorely missed. I love you always!"

Brinson and Richards were married from 1985 to 1988. They remained close friends even after their divorce, and Brinson frequently appeared on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alongside Richards.

Before Richards broke her silence, reports quoted sources close to the family saying she was "devastated" and that other family members were extremely worried about her maintaining her sobriety amid her grief.

"Everyone's worried about Kim in the same way they're always kind of worried about her," a source told E! News. "No one wants to see Kim's health take a step backwards because of grief."

And now, according to Us Weekly, Modern Family actress Vergara has filed a $15 million lawsuit against beauty company Venus Concept in order to ensure it stays that way.

In her lawsuit, Vergara claims the beauty company has been using her name and image in advertisements without her permission. She's been battling the company over the unauthorized use for more than a year prior to filing her lawsuit.

The whole situation started when Vergara posted a photo to the media sharing Web site WhoSay showing her getting ready for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards in August of 2014. In the photo, Vergara can be seen using a Venus Concept machine to get a pre-red carpet massage.

"Legacy massage at @drlancerrx," she wrote alongside the snap.

"Sofía personally prides herself on believing in what she sells and she talks about it genuinely," a source close to Vergara told Us Weekly. "For someone to just slap her face and image on something that she doesn’t even like, she just feels like she’s cheating her fans."

Man secretly divorces wife right after wedding to 'protect his assets'

But Gabriel kept a secret the whole time: He secretly divorced Cristina four months after they wed in an effort to "protect" his assets. According to the New York Post, Gabriel launched a legal dissolution of marriage in the Dominican Republic, even though they didn't live there. He arranged for legal counsel to "represent" both sides and told authorities that his life was "unbearable" with Cristina.

More: Viral video of surprise haka performance at wedding is raw with emotion

Except it was anything but unbearable.

"He was absolutely charming, and despite our age difference, it was love at first sight,” Cristina, 59, told the Post. “It was and somehow it’s still a great love."

She cared for her husband, now 90, during his hospital stays, but now she's suing him for the fraudulent divorce. She only found out about it in November when a tax bill arrived for their Manhattan home without her name. After investigating, she found that Gabriel tried to have her name removed from the deed citing the Dominican divorce as proof.

Cristina says she "has no recollection of [giving] any authorization to anyone to proceed with a divorce, or even thinking about divorce from the man she had just recently married," adding that she was “surreptitiously impaired, drugged or misled” into giving permission if she somehow did.

"I realize now that during all these years of joy and happiness, and of difficult moments we shared together, my husband lied to me and had the Dominican divorce on the back of his mind," she continued. "It’s what is hurting me the most."

Male lawmaker enacts new dress code that only applies to women

Kansas state Senator Mitch Holmes, a Republican and chairman of the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee, decided to create a new dress code that calls for "professional attire" for men and more stringent guidelines for women who testify before the state government.

More: Woman says clerk told her teen she couldn't wear a dress without Spanx

For women, "low-cut necklines and mini-skirts are inappropriate," according to the Topeka Capital-Journal, because it's too distracting during testimony. Because, you know, lawmakers apparently aren't adults who know how to act like professionals.

There are no actual guidelines for where hemlines must be to satisfy the rules because "it's one of those things that's hard to define," said Holmes. "Put it out there and let people know we're really looking for you to be addressing the issue rather than trying to distract or bring eyes to yourself."

More: Woman defends her dramatic eyebrow tattoos, says she did it "because I can"

And Holmes gets to play judge and jury to decide what is and isn't appropriate for women to wear. "Oh, for crying out loud," Democratic Senator Laura Kelly said in response, according to the paper. "What century is this?"

For. Real.

"I am more interested in what they have to say about the direction our state should go than what they're wearing that day," Republican Senator Carolyn McGinn added.

The most infuriating part: Holmes thought about specifying that men wear a jacket and tie, but decided men didn't need instructions on appropriate wear. What he forgets is that some of the most powerful women in the world wear "revealing" outfits and are able to conduct business just fine, thankyouverymuch.

The X-Files: Mulder and Scully's nightmares hold the key to their baby's fate

More: Outerspace Vodka will appeal to your inner nerd

Let's be honest, tonight's episode, "Founders Mutation", was everything a classic X-Files monster-of-the-week episode should be: creepy, spine-tingling and more than a little bit gross. Not only did Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) investigate a crooked doctor with a super-unsettling collection of genetically manipulated children, but we got to see a woman cut her pregnant stomach open in order to save her unborn child.

But the real feels came courtesy of Mulder and Scully's imagined versions of their missing son's life.

That's right, not only did they actually talk about baby William, but we also got windows into their individual fantasies of what raising him might have been like. The segments were all kinds of heartrending — especially since both Mulder and Scully live such insanely dangerous lives that even their fantasies can't help but turn into nightmares about their son being abducted or mutated by aliens.

X-Files - Scully's nightmare

After last night's premiere episode, it was obvious that baby William's fate — long shrouded in mystery — was on the table for this season, but so were a lot of new conspiracy theory elements. And with only six episodes in total, it was anybody's guess how deep the William story line was going to get.

Well, with so much attention paid to the missing baby in Episode 2, I'm willing to bet we're going to finally get some answers about his whereabouts. Either that or fans will demand the show come back again and again until it does. I mean, there's no way show creator Chris Carter would build so much of this season's story line around Scully's abduction, alien DNA and baby without giving us some sort of answers, right?

She and her cohosts on The View have been discussing the #OscarsSoWhite controversy extensively, but on Monday, they continued by taking on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' decision, made public in a pledge last Friday, to double membership of women and minorities by 2020.

"The issue is not the Academy," Goldberg said on the show. "Even if you fill the Academy with black and Latino and Asian members, if there’s no one on the screen to vote for, you’re not going to get the outcome that you want."

And then Goldberg tried to use her own Oscar win, for Best Supporting Actress in Ghost in 1991, as proof that the controversy is overblown.

"I won once," she stated. "So it can't be that racist."

Goldberg joins a number of celebrities of color, including Stacey Dash, who have made controversial comments in support of the Oscars. Meanwhile, the list of notable black celebrities who are boycotting the event, including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee, continues to grow.

Goldberg has been adamant that she doesn't support the planned boycott, saying the problem lies not with the Oscars, but with the relatively small number of roles for black actors.

"You need directors and producers who will say, ‘Hey, what about so and so?’" she said. "They need to be aware that the picture is not complete. You wanna boycott something? Don't go see the movies that don't have your representation. That's the boycott you want. To me, we have this conversation every year. It pisses me off."

J'onn J'onzz's Supergirl episode proves the silly love triangles need to go

$

The emotional episode took us deep into J'onn J'onzz's backstory, explaining how the White Martians forced his people into concentration camps and slaughtered his family back on Mars. The appearance of the latest villain exposed Hank's PTSD, introduced National City to a terrifying new threat and totally strengthened the bond between Hank, Kara and Alex.

Supergirl still
Image: Darren Michaels/Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

The plot, along with David Harewood's acting performance, added incredible dimension to the Hank Henshaw character and breathed new life into the show's story line as a whole.

More: How Supergirl is disappointing its feminist fans

The problem with this well-executed story line that Supergirl so desperately needed? It completely highlighted the absurdity of the weaker story lines surrounding characters like James Olsen, Lucy Lane and Winn Schott. At this point, all three characters seem to have no other function than to fulfill trivial romantic plotlines that aren't doing anything to further the show — and while it's true that almost every show on TV has some kind of love subplot to add some soapy fun into the mix, the Supergirl romantic story lines just really aren't that entertaining.

supergirl tweet 3

supergirl tweet 3

At first, James was just there to be the object of Kara's lust, but now that Lucy has entered the picture, it's morphed into a super-awkward game of Kara continually torturing herself after walking in on the two lovebirds getting cozy.

And the love story between Lucy and James is equally as awkward. They can't seem to get on the same page and have passive aggressive squabbles — like when James kinda sorta didn't want Lucy to work with him at CatCo — but there's not enough fire in the relationship to make anyone actually care if they break up or not.

More: Supergirl: 8 Reasons the first half of Season 1 was a total letdown

And sure, we got a closer look into Winn's backstory last week when it was revealed that his father is the evil Toyman, but that episode also made it resoundingly clear that his infatuation with Kara isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Making Winn a villain is the only way to preserve his story line on the show. Otherwise, he's just stale. However, his behavior in the beginning of tonight's episode in which he dismisses Kara before making a quick exit shows that he will remain a trite subplot for the time being.

Supergirl tweet 2

That being said, it was obviously super refreshing to be immersed in the Martian Manhunter story tonight that actually had some purpose.

But don't get too excited about the prospect of subplots with actual heart taking center stage on Supergirl.

The Biggest Loser's Erin Willett proves she should have won The Voice

Season 17 of The Biggest Loser began with two celebrity contestants, although one (Richard Hatch) has already received the boot. Erin Willett remains on the show, but perhaps not for long, as she's struggled to lose as much weight as her fellow contestants. This lack of weight loss progress clearly made her emotional during the show's latest episode, when she lost five pounds during the first weigh-in and just one during the evening's second stint on the scale.

More: 9 Things to know about The Biggest Loser Season 17 cast

Overcome with emotion, Willett decided to use a song she'd previously written to show the other contestants — and the trainers — how she felt. In a later interview with People, she admitted that the song gave her the opportunity to finally release her inner demons.

Although she wrote the lyrics to "Out of Darkness" several years ago, the song's message still rang true when she performed it on The Biggest Loser. And because viewers had a better idea of the dynamics at play than they did during Willett's time on The Voice, this stripped-down (literally) performance had far more meaning than any of her onstage appearances during Season 2 of The Voice.

Viewers overwhelmingly approved of Willett's performance, with a few even claiming that, with pipes like those, she deserved to win The Voice. Others, while not willing to go so far as to award Willett an honorary The Voice victory, admitted that her performance made them very emotional. The performance definitely generated an impressive social media response.

Toy Grandison (who was sadly eliminated tonight) also chimed in on Twitter. Like many viewers, she was brought to tears by the special performance. The song must have been especially meaningful to Grandison, who could relate to the pain and frustration that prompted Willett to burst into song.

Willett's performance may very well have secured her another week on the show. When the time came to vote, pretty much everybody on Team Jen agreed that it was time for Vicki Clark to head home. A few cynics have since speculated as to whether Willett will be able to remain on the show much longer, as she cannot merely start singing every time she worries that she might be eliminated.

Recovery Road stars Jessica Sula (of the British incarnation of Skins) as Maddie Graham, a 17-year-old girl whose drinking and drug addictions land her in a 90-day live-in substance abuse treatment program. Maddie still goes to school during the day, but for the next three months, she'll be spending every morning, night and weekend moment at Spring Meadows. Maddie is rebellious and doesn't see herself as truly belonging at the facility, but since her only other option is expulsion, she makes the effort to give it a fair chance.

The first clue that Maddie's journey will be a bit more intense than the sort of journey typically seen on a family show comes about halfway through the pilot. During her first night at Spring Meadows, Maddie has a dream about her deceased father. He was killed by a drunk driver when Maddie was 14, and although common sense would suggest that such an experience would encourage her to be cautious with substances, we all know that the grief process is never that simple. It might not come as a shock, then, that her grief has pushed her in the complete opposite direction, one embracing of alcoholism and risky behavior.

Maddie's dream about her father starts out nicely — he offers her support and comfort as she transitions into this new living situation. But quickly, the dream morphs into a nightmare and we see a glimpse of what Maddie's father must have looked like after he was hit by the drunk driver.

Recovery Road_Nightmare

When Maddie sees her bloody, bruised father, she screams in terror and wakes up. Whether it was first night jitters or a recurring nightmare is unknown at this point. As terrifying as the image was, I would be interested in seeing the show continue to use dreams and nightmares as a way of tapping into Maddie's subconscious and addressing the trauma and fears that have contributed to her struggle with addiction. Perhaps dreams will be a safer place than group therapy for Maddie to process her demons.

What we do know right now is that Recovery Road isn't afraid to show the very real, frightening and dark sides of difficult issues. Substance abuse on its own isn't exactly a picnic, but Recovery Road isn't interested in sugarcoating it one bit.

The intensity heats up again toward the end of the episode, when Maddie's mother visits her at Spring Meadows. During the conversation, her mother takes out a condom wrapper that she discovered in Maddie's car, expressing gratitude that, at the very least, her daughter is engaging in safe sex. But this reveal is more shocking to Maddie than she's willing to let on.

Earlier in the episode, Maddie mentions that she is a virgin. When she sees the condom wrapper, she realizes that she's engaged in sexual activity under the influence — but she doesn't know with whom or when or how often. She can't remember any of it. And although she knows that this makes the sex non-consensual (and therefore rape, not sex), she tells her roommate that she feels guilt and fear that she may have initiated or vocalized consent anyway. That wakeup call leads her to take her work in rehab much more seriously than she had previously.

Shortly after this, Maddie and the others receive a surprise visitor: newly discharged patient Doug. When we meet Doug earlier in the episode, his Spring Meadows peers gift him a leather jacket as a parting gift once he finishes the program. But sobriety doesn't stick for him and he shows up at the house drunk (or high or both), physically and sexually threatening housemate Rebecca. Doug's actions lead to his arrest, but not before several violent altercations make the residents fear for their safety and well-being.

Recovery Road's pilot is certainly a strong one, and audiences can look forward to a compelling, thoughtful look at addiction and recovery. But what's more notable than its quality is its extremely mature and disturbing content. Although nothing appears to be included solely for shock value, this is a far more shocking (and, potentially, controversial) show than one might be accustomed to seeing on ABC Family. Does the rebranding of Freeform mean that we have many new shows as dark and as serious as Recovery Road to look forward to? Hopefully so, because if this episode is any indication, Freeform is a network that truly knows how to address dark and challenging issues with a huge amount of sensitivity and grace. Just don't let the little ones stay up for it or they'll have nightmares as terrifying as Maddie's.

Ben Higgins takes a page from Sister Wives on his awkward two-on-one date

The twins, Haley and Emily, have always sort of been this weird addition to the season. We're not even sure if Ben can really tell them apart, let alone if he's actually developing feelings for either of them.

More: Ben Higgins enjoys new fame with John Stamos & Samuel L. Jackson (PHOTOS)

Chris Harrison even said during the premiere of Bachelor Live that the only reason he could tell them apart, at least in the beginning, was because one of them hurt her thumb, so the injury made it easier to differentiate between the two.

Hence the reason Ben gave the twins a special date during tonight's episode. He could get to know them both a little better and decide which twin he actually wanted to pursue a relationship with.

But the date quickly went from special to strange since Ben jumped the gun by having a hometown date early. The group had traveled to Las Vegas, which just happened to be Haley and Emily's hometown. So what did they do? They took Ben to meet their mom, of course.

Cue the first uncomfortable moment on this date.

And then, after squeezing in some time snuggling with each twin separately, Ben decided that it was time to stop seeing double.

"There's no doubt I'm attracted to them both," Ben said prior to making up his mind about who to eliminate. "But as my feelings grow, it's harder to comprehend how I could continue with two sisters."

More: The Bachelor's Ben Higgins might have the weirdest women yet

I genuinely think that Ben is a good guy who is searching for love. But the twin thing is just strange no matter how you look at it. Which is why it's good Ben isn't waiting until too late in the game to let one of them go. But the way he decided to eliminate Haley tonight was just downright uncomfortable to watch.

Especially given that her mom was involved!

"You've got two amazing daughters and they really are incredible in every way," Ben said earnestly to the twins' mom as he sent Haley home (or really just asked her to stay at home, since they were already there) without a rose and kept Emily around for another week.

So many cringes I'm getting wrinkles from this episode!

The girls had a good cry session together before we all gratefully accepted the end of the twin era on The Bachelor. Let's maybe never do that again, OK, ABC?

How to handle nepotism as a business owner

$

The larger the company grows, the more hiring family becomes nepotism. In a culture where we’re urged to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and promised that hard work and dedication will lead to success, the bias is a slap to the face. It’s an insurmountable barrier that employees have been barred from based on birth. Not an easy pill to swallow in a democratic country.

More: Why 70 percent of millennials are unhappy with their jobs

Nepotism is a concept I’m very familiar with. I have a family member who is a successful owner of two businesses. Due to the fact that the majority of my family never attended college, most of the family has worked for him at one point or another.

My cousins spent their teenage years sorting and packaging nuts and bolts. I have two aunts who have filled a management role and another uncle who has been in several different positions within both companies. If you need a job and are family, chances are my uncle will hire you.

More: Why you should steer clear of the workplace rumor mill

Whether or not a family member getting a job will be a boon is really dependent on who they are. Some of my family took a pay cut to work for my uncle and waited for years to get a raise. Another was being paid more than other employees and would pull the “I’m related to the business owner” card when reprimanded by managers, letting him effectively get away with more than they should have.

This favoritism can severely hamper a company’s ability to hold on to their non-family employees. Employees often measure how well they’re doing within a company based on how their wage measures against other employees. Having a higher wage for doing better work can lead to less employee turnover.

Likewise, an unfair pay structure for family leads to employees wondering why they’re paid less.

In an effort to help employers navigate hiring family members, here are some guidelines:

  • Try to offer them what they’re worth. You’re doing no one any favors if you give them more money based on familial affiliation.
  • Have honest conversations about how chair filling hurts the company’s bottom line.
  • For hopeless family members, make it very clear that they shouldn’t share any hiring information with their fellow employees.
  • If an employee comes to you to complain about nepotism, don’t cave and offer them a raise. Yes, they’re right. Yes, it’s unfair, but if you give them a raise and that gets around everyone will want to earn more than the incompetent family member. That’s not sustainable.
  • Ensure, apart from the slight deviation, that there is enough ability to earn a higher wage or receive a promotion to alleviate the concerns about the preferential treatment. Steer clear of wage gaps based on other factors.

While nepotism is a reality, it’s not always seen as a positive one. Business owners should handle the practice delicately. As long as you offset hiring your family with an otherwise fair pay structure and management hierarchy, employees will understand that family — whether they're great or mediocre — is just a necessary evil they’ll need to deal with.

Parents get a telling-off for wearing pyjamas on the school run

More: School bans pupils from wearing coats even though it's freezing

Fortunately, my children don't go to Skerne Park Academy in Darlington, because if they did I may have found myself in the headteacher's office for a dressing down. Or, rather, a dressing up — because Kate Chisholm is fed up with parents pitching up at the school gates in their jammies and has made sure they know all about it.

In a letter published on Metro.co.uk, Miss Chisholm highlighted the "increasing tendency for parents to escort children to and from school while still wearing their pyjamas and, on occasion, even slippers," and asked all parents to "take the time to dress appropriately."

"While this may seem to some to be a minor point, I am sure you will agree that it is important for us all to set our children a good example about what is appropriate and acceptable in all aspects of life, not only from the point of view of their safety and general well-being but also as preparation for their own adult life," she wrote.

More: Spelling homework goes viral but it's the teacher who's under the spotlight

Phil Naylor, a parent of Skerne Park Academy pupils, told Metro.co.uk, "We all support the school and I hope this helps get the message across to parents. It’s disgraceful, we should be guiding our children not giving them bad habits."

Now, there's nothing wrong with having the occasional nothing-is-going-right morning and doing the school run with a bedhead and mismatched socks. Or, in my case, with pyjamas under my clothes. I'm fairly sure my kids' safety and general well-being didn't suffer too much from being exposed to that, and I don't think it's any business of the school what I choose to wear, at any time of the day.

However, in Miss Chisholm's defence, it seems things at Skerne Park have reached a point where some parents are, quite frankly, taking the mickey — she claims they're even turning up to school assemblies and meetings in their pjs and slippers.

How to find the right type of therapy for you

More: 5 relationship habits of the happiest couples on the planet

That always stuck with me, especially as I started to research alternative forms of therapy for a relative of mine who wanted to try something other than traditional talk therapy. When you see that there are different types of therapists whose processes are based on solid, empirically-based research, you'll have information that can help you — or someone you love — find the right therapist.

Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people who want practical solutions

If you are dealing with a mental heath issue (depression, anxiety, insomnia, grief or stress) and don’t want to be in therapy for the rest of your life, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) allows you to participate in your own recovery. Cognitive behavioral therapists may give you some homework to do to help you master whatever it is you are lacking. For example, if you go to a CBT for anxiety, they may have you keep a record of when you feel anxious, on a scale of one to 10, how anxious you felt and what thought preceded the anxiety. CBT is all about changing the way you think. CBT utilizes a limited number of sessions to help get you back to your life with the tools you’ll need to help yourself. CBT is extremely motivating and highly effective. To find a doctor who does CBT near you, your best resource will likely be your heath insurance, or ask the folks at the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, or check out the National Institute for Mental Health.

Dance therapy might be right for you

Dance therapy can help patients who are shy, have body image problems or find talk therapy too confrontational. Dance therapy is also good for those with dementia and those who have severe mental health issues and are in day programs, since it is very useful for building communication. One of the best uses for dance therapy over the past few years has been for kids with autism.

Dr. Shoshana Dayanim of Keiser University says dance therapy is great with movement exercises or even just passing a ball around. “Dance therapy can help the patient get in touch with their surroundings in a meaningful way. It grounds you in reality, because you have to be present.”

She likens it to education. “We all learn differently, so it stands to reason that when it comes to therapy, it’s the same thing. Not all therapy works for every person.” Dance therapy is very good at helping you articulate what’s really going on in areas of depression for example because it is so non-confrontational. Dr. Dayanim suggests that if you are looking for a therapist for someone who is on the spectrum, dance therapy’s “mirroring technique” has been found to be highly effective. The American Dance Therapy Association is a great place to find a dance movement professional near you.

Why you might consider desensitization or exposure therapy

If you are having specific phobias that you need to get over quickly — like you’re afraid to fly and have a trip to Hawaii planned with the family — exposure therapy might be right for you. It is gradual and repeated therapy that exposes you to the element or situation you are afraid of and teaches you how to lower your anxiety levels surrounding the target of the phobia. If we use the flying example, there are programs where they will start with education about flight, then you are taken to an airport, next you may board a plane and finally a short take off and landing. Common uses for exposure therapy are for everything from fear to PTSD. The Mayo Clinic is a great resource to find a therapist who can help.

Who should try activity-based programs for girls

If you have a daughter between the ages of 8 and 18 with body image issues, look into activity-based programs. Those programs are a specialty of GMA contributor Dr. Robyn Silverman, who makes it clear there is a big difference between body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and body image. “If your child has an eating disorder or BDD, they will need a clinical therapist well-versed in it, since this needs a much more profound clinical slant.”

Body image is different. “Even girls who seem normal and healthy may not feel happy with their bodies," she says. “Their feelings may even interfere with daily tasks.”

Girls need to learn how not to pick apart messages that they receive from the media, but also from those around them. These programs educate girls and can help their babysitters, your mother-in-law, older siblings and anyone who is around her giving her an unhealthy message. These programs are not therapy based, but are really strong options that build on media literacy and how to navigate the world we live in.

Dr. Silverman suggests programs like Girls on the Run, Girls Inc. or Girl Scouts and Big Brothers Big Sisters. “Some are weekly, some bi-weekly, but they all talk about the body with a focus on empowerment." Contact these programs and read Dr. Silverman’s book, Good Girls Don’t Get Fat: How weight obsession is messing up our girls for more information.

When to try traditional psychotherapy

If you have self-esteem issues, especially those surrounding aging, traditional psychotherapy might be your best option. Psychotherapist, Dr. Robi Ludwig explains, “The process of talking can change the brain chemistry. Just by sharing your story, in an unedited way, in the presence of a professional, can be enough.” Therapy at its best can be validating. You learn that your emotions matter, especially if people around you are dismissive of your feelings.

Traditional talk therapy can help you feel less out of control as you learn that its OK to have your feelings. “But,” Dr. Ludwig adds, “also to correct distortions that you hold.” Dr. Ludwig, author of Your Best Age is Now likes to focus on issues that involve the ageing process. She talks to patients about what we're told culturally, and what that means in terms of your life. She says that she likes to change the thinking of people who are feeling hopeless about their future. “It’s wrong thinking that it’s too late to have anything positive happen for you in your life, or feeling regretful about the mistakes you’ve made.”

She also believes that it is never too late to have the career you want, have the type of relationship you want or look the way you want. “It’s absolutely not too late,” she says. She adds that “we are so youth focused that we have overlooked the new science about being in mid-life, how we think and how we learn.”

This type of therapy can help you understand that each stage brings its own challenges but also its own solutions. “You’re doubting yourself and need to feel more in control of the life you want to have. Of course it’s possible and the science backs that up.” To find a great psychotherapist near you, check out the American Psychological Association.
