The 8 uncomfortable topics I refuse to lie to my kids about

$

I never wanted my children to doubt me, so I made every effort to tell them the truth, even when it was easier to be dishonest. When it comes to the following subjects, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable they may be — I refuse to lie to my sons

1. Money.

I was never allowed to ask about money as a child. I remember wondering how much money I needed to save to buy a car, and being told it was “none of my business” when I asked. Discussions of money are important to have with children, if only to help prepare them to manage their own finances as adults. My kids know when I am broke, they know when I’m not, and they know that we have to budget to stay on track. While it may feel awkward to be transparent with our children about money, it can help them be more financially literate in the future.

2. How do I look?

While this is entirely subjective, my sons know that I will always give my honest opinion about their style choices. I am specific, pointing out the exact reason(s) I don’t love their attire, whether it’s an off-color shirt or ill-fitting jeans. I’ll even tell them if their hairstyle is wonky. I have a rule about this brand of honesty, though. I only speak up if they ask me, and I also make sure to tell them something I like about their look, too. My goal is not to break their confidence but to share my perspective and ultimately allow them to decide how they feel about their appearance.

3. Death.

Some families may choose to hide death from their children in an attempt to lessen the impact of losing someone they love. In my family, we have chosen to always talk about death as honestly as possible, even if it was difficult. Beyond the act of dying comes the wondering about an afterlife, and the need to understand our own purpose. Due to our family being non-religious, we don’t rely on scripture to explain these processes; rather, we use examples in nature and open the door for all possible interpretations, even spiritual ones, as potential answers. When someone dies, we mourn, we remember and we talk about death — even the uncomfortable parts — until everyone feels ready to move on.

4. Is there a God?

Our choice to raise our family without religion means discussions of God are open-ended talks that don’t have one final answer. My sons have asked me if there is such a thing as God, and my answer has always been the same: I don’t know for certain, but I believe so. I’ve also told them that my beliefs don’t have to be their beliefs and that they are free to explore that question throughout their lives to come to their own conclusions. While this may be unsettling to some, I believe it has fostered an independent ideology of acceptance and healthy skepticism within my sons that enables them to question popular ideas while valuing their own judgment.

5. Drugs and alcohol.

I was told as a child that drugs killed people. One hit, one time, and boom — people would drop dead. When as a teenager I tried marijuana and didn’t die, I immediately felt that all the warnings given to me by my elders about drugs and alcohol were lies. When my sons asked me about drugs and alcohol, I decided to take a more honest route. I taught them that drugs are so enticing because they literally make people feel "high" — and that can trigger a dependency problem. I explained the chemical effect drugs and alcohol have on the body, and that it can be dangerous, but I only relied on facts, not fear, to encourage them to stay away from drugs. Now at 16 and 18 years old, neither of my sons has tried drugs nor wants to try them, and I believe it is, in part, because I was honest with them.

6. Sex

I’ll just get this out now: I don’t horny-shame my kids. Part of being human means we have a sexual drive that enables us to procreate and perpetuate our species. This sexual drive begins at a young age, and is generally expressed by masturbation and a desire to explore sex with others. What I have taught my kids is how to manage those feelings while still being socially acceptable. We don’t touch ourselves in public, we don’t touch people who don’t want to be touched, and we recognize the maturity necessary to engage in a sexual relationship with someone else. My sons are not embarrassed by their sexuality, and have (so far) been successful in transitioning from children to young adults who have sexual experiences in safe, healthy ways.

7. What’s in this recipe?

I have always been upfront and honest about what I am cooking and feeding my children. They haven’t always liked or agreed with my recipe choices, but they know that I am not hiding ingredients to make them eat something they don’t want to eat. I never cooked separate meals for my children, and let my sons know that if they didn’t like what I prepared, they were welcome to find something to feed themselves. In the end, my sons have developed an ability to try new foods, even if they are shy about new ingredients.

8. I’ll be there.

I never want my sons to feel the sting of looking for me and expecting me to be there when I’m not. My boys both know, aside from death or dismemberment, I will be where I say I’ll be, and this has taught them that above all else, they can always count on me. Even when it’s something small, like promising to take your child to get an ice cream, or to watch a video with them later — when we go back on our word and don’t deliver on our promises, it teaches kids they can’t depend on us for the bigger things in life, too.

Scrolling through the comments left on the featurette's YouTube page, a trend begins to emerge: People are thrilled to see how the women of Full House have aged.

Time has been good to all of them
Image: Netflix/YouTube

Some of the sentiments are quite warm and complimentary, expressing kind feelings about how lovely the actresses look so many years after the original show aired.

Lori Loughlin

Others expressed their feelings in slightly more colloquial ways.

But across the board, it is clear that people are very interested in seeing how attractive Candace Cameron Bure (D.J.), Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie), Lori Loughlin (Becky) and Andrea Barber (Kimmy) look and dress in the year 2016.

More: Andrea Barber had the sweetest reason for returning to TV for Fuller House

This new wave of commentary on Full House hotness was catalyzed by the release of the featurette, but fans have been commenting on the actresses for weeks. Ever since Netflix began releasing more promotional images and teasers for the show, we've seen more of D.J., Stephanie and Kimmy than we'd seen in ages — and it's hard not to notice what a difference two decades makes.

None of these comments go past the surface-level understanding of attraction, but I wonder if part of the appeal that these commenters may be noticing (but unable to articulate) is how strange it is to see mature, beautiful women when you are most familiar with them as young girls. For the generation that grew up alongside the Tanner sisters and their friends, D.J., Stephanie and Kimmy reminded us of our friends. And, certainly, crushing on them as they aged was to be expected, but even when the girls started dating, the show maintained a sex-free innocence. It was hard to really conceive of any of them as "hot," even when they looked beautiful, because Full House was never a show about sexiness. It was a show about youthful innocence.

Perhaps, then, this emphasis on how terrific the stars look today (and, don't get me wrong, they do!) is a sign that Fuller House is headed in a more mature direction than Full House ever did. Will the show be sexy at all? Will we get to learn about the relationships that D.J., Stephanie and Kimmy have had in years since, including all the juicy bedroom details? It'll be interesting to see how much the series capitalizes on this clear reality. Surely, if they do, fans will be even more pleased.

Wanna see what D.J., Stephanie, Becky and Kimmy look like today? Watch them in all their glory in the new Fuller House featurette!

Tourism Australia campaign featuring Chris Hemsworth revealed

Chris Hemsworth's voice can be heard while visions of majestic views from around Australia appear on the screen. It almost looks and sounds like a love note to the country.

"How can the colour blue be a feeling?" Hemsworth asks, as we take in views of turquoise waters shot from above.

More: Why Australia was named the 2016 destination of the year

Hemsworth joined Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in New York at an Australia Day function yesterday to launch the three-minute clip.

The only letdown we can see in the $45 million campaign, though, is that while Hemsworth lends his voice to the clip, he is absolutely nowhere in sight.

Tourism Australia Managing Director John O'Sullivan said they didn't want the Thor star to take the attention away from the real star of the show — Australia.

"[The campaign] has always been very much about Australia being the hero and telling the country's story," said Mr O'Sullivan, according to News.com.au.

"We felt Chris and his voiceover would provide the perfect complement — an authentic and influential voice to help tell the story."

So far it seems that the video has been a hit with the locals, which can't be said for some of the previous tourism campaigns released over the years.

Lara Bingle appeared in the 2010 campaign which gave rise to the now famous catchphrase, "Where the bloody hell are you?" The phrase didn't translate well, unfortunately, so the $180 million production was controversial at the time and received some negative coverage as a result.

One of the best tourism campaigns Australia has ever seen has got to be the commercial featuring Paul Hogan and his infamous line "Put another shrimp on the barbie." The ad itself was a great success, even though no one says shrimp, and as a result Australia became the No. 1 tourism destination for Americans at the time.

Australians think it's time to see the flag get a makeover

Voters were asked to select one out of the six designs, with 31 per cent of people voting for Southern Horizon, pictured below.

New Australian flag design

The second most popular flag was the reconciliation flag which attracted 28 per cent of the votes.

The poll didn't measure how many Australians want the flag to remain the same or to adopt a new design, but the fact that more people took part in the survey than was expected is a reflection that Australians at least want to have a discussion about it.

"We were overwhelmed with how popular the survey was," says Benjamin Jones, historian from Western Sydney University.

"We were expecting between one and two thousand [respondents] and we ended up with over 8,000, which I think does indicate there's at least enthusiasm for a conversation about the flag, if not a groundswell of support for actually changing it."

More: Hilarious Australia Day tweets that will make you smile and feel patriotic

Australians have been sharing their opinions of the flag on social media, some embracing the idea while others are not so sure.

"I like the idea of changing our flag, but this design, for me, misses the mark," says Peter Lloyd.

"How can we have a truly Australian Flag without incorporating the colours of the aboriginal flag — black yellow & red?" says Graeme Egan.

"Absolutely nothing wrong with our current flag. I will NEVER EVER recognise any other flag. No need to change to a cartoon picture!" adds Brian Cox.

While Don Lopez suggests a slight change to the flag to incorporate the traditional colours of our first people.

"If it doesn't include the aboriginal flag forget it! 40,000 years cannot be wiped," says Cook Tragic

There have been ongoing talks every now and again about replacing the Union Jack with another design, and our friends across the ditch in New Zealand have also been in talks about changing their own flag design.

More: MTV Australia's racist comment a reflection of Australian society

They've held the first of two referendums, the first of which was held last year to choose a preferred flag design, the second which will be held this year to decide whether they actually want to adopt it.

The design that was elected was a silver fern on a black and blue background, instead of the traditional Union Jack.

According to tradition the Maori hunters and warriors used the silver of the leaves to find their way home.

The flag becomes a link between indigenous and modern New Zealand, something that is hoped a new Australian flag can also achieve.

Indigenous activist and playwright Richard Frankland says changing the flag would be a powerful step towards racial equality in Australia.

"Symbols and images, they provoke thought, they can enable people to create a pathway to change their lives," he said. "We have the opportunity to be better than we are at the moment."

What do you think about changing the Australian flag design? Let us know.

In a recent appearance on his sister-in-law Khloé Kardashian's new talk show, Kocktails with Khloé, Disick claimed that the world has the wrong impression of him and that chasing money and celebrity no longer bring him any satisfaction or happiness.

"Everybody keeps saying, 'Focus on work, focus on work. Make more money,'" said Disick as he sat on a couch with fellow cocktail-sipping guests Morgan Stewart, Jenna Marbles, Malika Haqq and Tyga. "I have money. The more money I have, the less happy I am. So, the only thing I'm trying to focus on is just calming down and focusing on the kids and just trying to be a good dad."

In addition to calming down and focusing on his kids, Disick, who's infamous for his hard-partying ways, is also eager to rehabilitate his reputation.

"I do get a little bit of the wrong impression I think," Disick answered when Haqq asked what's next for him. "A lot of people think that I, like, only care about money and cars and don't realize it's more just about insecurities and how much I care about my friends and my family.

"I'd really rather never be in a tabloid again," he added "But, if I'm gonna be, at least it'd be about, like, this guy isn't what everybody thinks he is."

While we applaud Disick's decision to turn his life around, leave behind the pursuit of fame and focus on family, we have to note that it's an interesting choice to make the announcement on a talk show called Kocktails with Khloé that features other reality stars drinking and talking about their celeb lives.

But Tyga, who has an on-again, off-again relationship with Kardashian's sister Kylie Jenner, was quick to jump in and defend Disick's claims that the public has the wrong impression of him.

"First of all, he's a great person," Tyga said of Disick. "He's a great father... he's a great person."

Startling new video shows how women are used as props in ads (WATCH)

In response, Badger — a well-known advertising company cofounder who has worked with brands like Vera Wang, Avon and Diane von Fürstenberg — pledged that her company will no longer create ads that use women as objects. Further, she refuses to put out images that are airbrushed "to the point of perfection."

She also produced a NSFW video for her #WomenNotObjects campaign that calls out a variety of companies and the ridiculous ways they hyper-sexualize women.

"I love giving blow jobs to sandwiches," one says while holding an ad of a woman holding a phallic-shaped sandwich in front of her mouth.

"I love sleeping with guys who don't know my name," adds another.

"Obviously, my cleavage can sell anything."

"I'm only here for your entertainment."

And many, many others.

More: Male lawmaker enacts new dress code that only applies to women

Badger admits that she was once the very person behind those types of ad campaigns. She was responsible for creating the infamous Calvin Klein ads of the '90s that featured Kate Moss and Mark Wahlberg.

Her attitude toward how women are treated changed after her own daughters were killed during a 2011 fire, along with her parents. She wanted to find a way to honor the memory of her daughters and she couldn't do that by promoting the very thing that holds women back in society. "I love my job but I don’t want to do it if it hurts anyone," she told the Washington Post. "I want my life to have a purpose."

The #WomenNotObjects campaign is picking up steam and, as we've seen with other movements, it looks like people are finally paying attention. Will it fix things automatically? No, but preventing even one objectifying advertisement will help. Let's just hope other advertising agencies are paying attention.

The photo doesn't only illustrate how much Zolciak, Brielle and Ariana have changed physically, but the caption of the photo and accompanying hashtags also indicate just how much their lives have changed since 2004.

"12 years ago!! I showed this pic to Kroy and he asked me if I shot it at Walmart!" Zolciak wrote. "This was Destin Fl, one of the most beautiful beaches  #ItWasJustMeAndMyGirls #TheyAreWereMyStrength #SingleMama #DreamsDoComeTrue #KeepBelieving."

It's kind of crazy to think that 12 years ago Zolciak was a non-reality star and single mom to two children. Fast-forward to 2016 and she's Bravo's pride and joy, married to NFL player Kroy Biermann and mother to six. Dang, she's been busy!

The response to Zolciak's throwback photo, for once, has been resoundingly positive.

"Hi Kim! I'm Brielle's age and my parents recently got divorced. Your daughter's (sic) are so lucky to have such a caring mother like you. I love watching your show. You guys are a great family. Keep working hard!" one young fan wrote in the comments section, while another added, "You are an inspiration to all the single mommy's. This picture reminds me so much of my two little girls and I!! You have a beautiful family and I enjoy your post (sic)!!!"

The praise is a refreshing change from the usual harsh bashing Zolciak faces when she posts a photo of herself, past or present.

Woman calls out reporter for implying that workers 'fake' mental illness

Another fact: A person's mental health status is rarely recognizable by physical appearance. These types of invisible illnesses are no less severe than physical afflictions, but one newspaper reporter set people's understanding of that back significantly by writing an article on how employers can tell if an employee is "faking" a mental illness to get out of work.

More: #StillHere campaign aims to overcome the stigma of dementia

The rise in awareness about mental illness has created an increase in the number of employees "willing to take advantage of the heightened sensitivity: the employee who fakes a disorder for their personal benefit," wrote James Adonis in an article for the Sydney Morning Herald.

The astonishing article inspired an Australian writer to post two images on Facebook that were taken three days apart. In one, she's crying; the other, smiling.

"In the first one, I have a mental illness," Anna Spargo-Ryan captioned the images. "And in the second one, I have a mental illness."

More: Why I overshare about my mental illness

She continued: "One of the recommendations from this absolute dropkick of a human was to 'issue a warning to those you suspect are faking it.'"

Mental Illness Anna Spargo-Ryan

Mental Illness Anna Spargo-Ryan

That's dangerous because it's part of the "constant reinforcement that we're 'imagining it' or that we're 'just sad' or that we 'have to want to get better,'" she wrote.

And that mental illness equals lazy or unintelligent.

"Good people have mental illnesses," she continued. "We need them to feel supported and empowered in their places, whether that's work or home or school or somewhere else. Not that someone is waiting to 'catch them out.'"

More: Vlogger's confession about depression is a must-watch

The image has been shared widely on social media, prompting Adonis to write an addendum on his original article. "… this has been unfair on those with a mental illness and their loved ones," he wrote. "This was never my intention. My intention was to achieve the opposite. At this I clearly failed. I'm genuinely sorry."

The Dance Moms minis have arrived, but not everyone's excited

One of the most rewarding aspects of watching Dance Moms has been seeing a group of talented girls grow from tiny dancers into teenage stars. Now, viewers may have the opportunity to watch a whole new batch of talented young dancers grow up. Abby Lee Miller has introduced an impressive new group of little girls, and suffice to say, they know how to rock that stage!

More: Dance Moms takes a page from Bring it On during the premiere

When they first learned of Miller's grand plan, a few of the main moms from the show worried that the minis might take the spotlight away from the other dancers. Instead, Miller's focus has largely been on her ongoing legal affairs; although, if anything is able to lift her out of her present funk, it's a couple of adorable little dancers.

More: Dance Moms cast members fall victim to another hack

Ultimately, the new dancers were no threat to the other girls. Despite offering up a truly stellar performance, they only took second place at the competition featured during tonight's episode of Dance Moms. Conversely, the older girls walked away with a first place trophy. Granted, Miller disappeared prior to both performances, and the minis were less equipped to handle this sudden absence. For the older girls, an absent teacher is a disappointment, but ultimately, no big deal. For the minis, it's downright scary! Fortunately, Gianna Martello was on hand to keep things running as smoothly as possible.

Several viewers also pointed out the young dancers' impressive technical skills. RHOBH's Kathryn Edwards sparks outrage for her entitled actions

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills viewers and cast members are still getting to know Kathryn Edwards, but if tonight's episode is any indication, she'll have a long and prosperous career as a Housewife. Her penchant for drama and her opulent lifestyle definitely garner strong reactions.

More: Kim Richards continues to film RHOBH for a surprising reason

Reality TV stars certainly aren't shy about showing off their expensive possessions and lavish lifestyles, but during tonight's episode of RHOBH, Edwards took this concept to a new extreme. She decided to give viewers a glimpse into her luxurious life while enjoying a private shopping spree courtesy of her husband, retired NFL player Donnie Edwards.

If gawking at million-dollar jewels wasn't enough to annoy viewers, Edwards also boldly proclaimed how she refuses to fly anything but first class. In fact, she is disgusted by the mere thought of flying (gasp) business class. While fancy means of travel are expected on RHOBH (who could forget Erika Jayne's private jet?), the other Housewives at least make some effort at stifling their condescending behavior.

Needless to say, Edwards' attitude didn't exactly sit well with viewers, who can usually tolerate the over-the-top luxury displayed by the Housewives — as long as they are somewhat tactful about it. Several viewers took to Twitter to complain about the latest addition to RHOBH's cast.

Surprisingly enough, a few viewers actually enjoyed Edwards' presence on RHOBH. These Edwards fans claimed that the newbie was eager to keep it real, unlike her fellow Housewives. Most viewers, however, agree that Edwards is the most annoying gal in an already-annoying group of women.

She may be intolerable for certain viewers, but Edwards is actually a great fit for RHOBH, as the show has been in need of some non-Lyme disease drama for quite some time. With Edwards causing so much chaos, viewers can finally rest assured knowing that, while the cast will discuss Yolanda Foster's health way more than necessary, this isn't about to simply become the new version of RHOC's cancergate. With Edwards' help, the show will get back to the drama levels experienced during the golden age of Brandi Glanville and Kim Richards.

Shadowhunters: 5 Reasons Alec and Jace's parabatai could soon be broken

If you didn't read Cassandra Clare's best-selling book series by the same name before the Freeform show (like me), you may be thinking, "What the heck is a parabatai?" But while it very well sounds like it could be an infectious disease or, you know, that tropical fish that swims up your urethra, parabatai is actually the term for a pair of Nephilim warriors bound together by a lifelong bond.

The term is derived from the ancient Greek expression heniochoi kai parabatai, which basically translates to "charioteers and side-men." Hmm, a precursor to the modern day "wing man" perhaps?

In any case, on tonight's episode, Jace explained to Clary what parabatai means and specifically what it means between he and Alec. By episode's end, though, it's clear trouble is brewing for these bonded boys. Here are a few reasons I could totally foresee a major shakeup in their future.

1. Love is in the air

You'd have to be pretty oblivious not to notice the intense chemistry between Clary and Jace. You'd also have to be pretty oblivious not to notice the seething tension between Alec and Clary — or between Alec and Jace over Clary. Listen, it's not like they'd be the first bromance in history to have a heart-shaped wedge driven between them thanks to a love interest. While Jace's feelings for Clary might not sever his bond with Alec, they definitely don't do the duo's parabatai any favors.

More: Shadowhunters spoilers: 8 Things to know about Freeform's new show (VIDEO)

2. Resentment is floating around, too

You know how these things go. You get a little inkling of resentment tickling at the back of your mind and then someone actually validates that inkling, which is exactly what happened tonight when it was implied Alec was in Jace's shadow. Once validated, that inkling sprouts roots, takes hold of your brain and grows like a weed. Judging by Alec's comment to Jace at the episode's end — "I'm older than you, Jace... I'm not in your shadow" — Alec's resentment is in full bloom.

3. Simon still isn't really safe

Most of tonight's episode centered around Clary's driving need to save Simon, and Jace's driving need to help and protect Clary. This, of course, was the very reason he and Alec kept bumping heads. So, yay, they ultimately save Simon! Or, wait, did they? Next week's preview teases that Simon could be turning into a vampire or have been tainted by evil in some way. If that's the case, we know the drama is far from over and Clary won't stop trying to rescue her BFF. In turn, Alec won't stop trying to shelter Clary and the whole cycle of conflict will continue to snowball.

4. Parabatais can be broken

The reality of the matter is that, although rare, parabatai bonds can be broken. This most often happens in the case of death (fingers crossed eye-candy Alec is around for a long time), but it can also happen if one of the parties becomes a Downworlder or a Silent Brother, or if they leave their life as a Shadowhunter to be with a mundane. All of which are possibilities, however slim.

5. This is TV

Let's be real — just because things happened a certain way in the book series, does not mean they will happen verbatim in the TV series. In fact, the odds are extremely high that the show will stray from the story line at some point or another, because it has to find a way to remain fresh and unpredictable and relevant if it has any hope of longevity. So all of the above things may very well lead up to a break in Jace and Alec's bromance, because that kind of drama makes for good television.

Will Pretty Little Liars' Aria be able to save Ezra from himself?

Ezra is absolutely not in the "hey, let's fall in love all over again" mindset right now. He's more in the grieving and drunk place in his life. Which is really terrible to see.

More: Pretty Little Liars cast dishes about the new relationships in 6B

Ezra actually might be my favorite character in the series since the show has always done such a good job of making him feel like he has just enough of a dark side. He's not a killer, but he definitely has personal demons that he struggles with. And those demons are out in full force right now.

Not only was his alcoholism confirmed tonight, but so was his innocence, in my opinion. The way he got so upset with the Liars when they questioned his whereabouts the night of CeCe's death was as tragic as it was such an amazing scene.

He didn't deny killing CeCe. Instead, he pointed the finger at Aria, asking her if she even knew him. And she admitted she didn't. Not anymore.

Score one for Aria.

More: Pretty Little Liars' new villain had better be a Liar

But then she kind of gave up on her whole "bring Ezra back to greatness" plan and just started writing his book herself.

Uh, not the way to help an alcoholic, Aria; not the way.

Plus, this whole scheme she has of writing Ezra's book for him is probably going to get Aria fired in the very near future.

But, hey, at least then she won't have to worry about running into Liam at the office when she and Ezra do eventually get back together.

Here's how I think it should play out: Aria gets caught writing Ezra's book. She gets fired and Ezra gets huffy about it for a bit. But it's enough that it snaps him out of his addiction stupor. And Aria decides to move back to Rosewood, at least until she finds another job. Right... Ezra and Aria have a good long chat about their respective futures. They start to hang out more. She decides to be his editor and leading lady moving forward. And they live happily ever after.

More: Pretty Little Liars' Ezra can't possibly be CeCe's killer

Keeping my fingers crossed for Ezria all the way!

I give them until the end of Season 6 before they're smooching.

Do you think Aria and Ezra will reunite romantically in the near future?

Baby died after NHS 111 failed to identify sepsis

More: My son's Lyme disease was finally diagnosed thanks to my gut instinct

Following a chest infection, William died of blood poisoning on December 14 2014 — after his mother phoned NHS 111 for assistance and was told "it's nothing serious", reported BBC News.

The report on William’s death said he might have lived if NHS 111 call handlers had been able to identify his condition, and that if a medically trained professional had taken the final call, they probably would have identified the infant’s cries as "a child in distress". It also revealed that GPs had failed to make an accurate diagnosis of William's condition and told Melissa Mead "not to worry", despite several visits to the doctors' surgery in the months before her son's death.

Initially, William's cause of death was cited as natural causes, but following a coroner's inquest in June 2015, it was determined that he died from septicaemia (treatable blood poisoning) caused by a long-running chest infection.

The report highlighted other failures in the care given to William, finding that his GP had not recorded all of the relevant information in his notes, his symptoms had not been recognised as something more serious, the out-of-hours GP service had not had access to William's primary care records, and the pathway tool followed by NHS 111 advisers had been too basic to pick up "red-flag" warnings connected to sepsis.

More: Baby's day care death blamed on popular napping practice

"Had any of these different courses of action been taken, William would probably have survived," stated the report.

Lindsey Scott, director of nursing with NHS England in the South West, said: "Everyone involved in this report is determined to make sure lessons are learned from William's death, so other families don't have to go through the same trauma."

"None of this detracts from our profound regret at the loss of William. For that loss, on behalf of all NHS organisations involved, I would like to apologise publicly to Mr and Mrs Mead," added Ms Scott, who also said staff at the local NHS 111 service had since been given extra training to recognise when cases might be more complex and need referral to a medic.

Sepsis, known as a "silent killer" because it can be difficult to identify, is the second biggest cause of death after cardiovascular disease, killing over 35,000 people per year in the U.K. The body's immune system goes into overdrive in response to infection, which can cause organ damage, shock, and even death. The most common causes are lung and urinary tract infections.

Signs of sepsis, which can affect people of any age but is most common in the very young and the elderly, include fever, breathlessness, shivering and mottled or discoloured skin.

William Mead's story is tragic, and the outcome could have been so different if he had received the care he needed. The fact that a number of GPs failed to correctly diagnose his condition suggests that all NHS staff need to be trained to detect and treat sepsis.

Additionally, but there has to be a wider recognition given to a parent's intuition. That parent may not be a qualified doctor, but when it comes to your own child, sometimes a gut feeling is just as important as years at medical school.

Lily-Rose Depp clarifies what 'sexually fluid' really means to her

Set in a small Canadian town, Yoga Hosers stars Harley Quinn Smith (director Kevin Smith’s daughter), and Lily-Rose Depp (Johnny Depp’s daughter) as teen besties, both named Colleen, who work the counter at the local convenience store called Eh to Zed. When their town is plagued by "Bratzies," racist little sausage people, the Colleens use their supreme yoga training to vanquish evil.

Depp, who is nearly the spitting image of her gorgeous French mother, actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, enjoyed getting to fight off bad guys using yoga. But she thinks the Colleens are more than positive role models for teen girls.

"They are role models for anyone, young boys and young girls. It's cool to see two 15-year-old girls in a position of power. We save the world in the movie and it's not to get the guy at the end. It's 2016, so it's gotten to the point where I don't think we even need to talk about the fact that it's women kicking ass. Women are f***ing badass," said Depp.

Smith agreed. "So many women have risen to power, so it should just be a natural thing. But it's still so talked about because it's shocking to some people that women could have the same position as men in this industry, but thank God it's changing."

For Smith, getting to work with her father was a real bonding experience. "We got to connect with each other and it was eye-opening — it led to a totally new understanding of my dad. It's crazy that we get to come here as a family and show our family project," she said. Kevin Smith debuted his first film Clerks at Sundance 22 years ago.

Depp also enjoyed getting to act in scenes with her own father, who plays Guy Lapoint, an offbeat writer in heavy prosthetics with facial moles that seem to move around on his face from scene to scene. "I've grown up going to his sets and everything, so to be on one together and be collaborating, it was really fun," she said.

But Depp was surprised by the fast pace of the shoot. "When we shot with my dad, it was really, really quick. Kevin works really fast because he's an editor, so he knows exactly what he needs. All of my dad's scenes were shot in a week."

While both Smith and Depp are beautiful and talented, they admitted they also have insecurities, just like other teenagers.

"In my experience," said Smith, "I've realized that not everybody is going to like you. There's good and bad to everything, but just realize that the bad is so minimal. Some people will think you're the most beautiful person in the world and some may think you're ugly. I've had people tell me I'm fat to my face. But what you are on the outside comes so secondhand to what you are on the inside. If you feel good about yourself on the inside, that you're a good person, doing good for the world, it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside. No one should be judging you on that anyway."

Depp agreed. "Every single person in the world is going to have their off days and insecurities. I'm sure even Beyoncé has days where she doesn't feel her best. I remember when I was little, looking up to these beautiful actresses and thinking they probably don't have any insecurities, but they do."

Social media, according to Depp, can often fuel insecurities. "People tend to feel isolated when they're attacked by people on the Internet and think, 'Oh, I'm the only person dealing with that insecurity.'"

More: Suffragette: 11 Reasons your daughter absolutely needs to see this film

Smith agreed. "There are nasty people on the Internet that sit there all day and type away, because they're hidden behind a virtual screen. We live in a world now where screens are such an important part of everyone's life, and there are a lot of advantages to that, like Instagram, and that's fun. But some people are going to type bad things about you. You have to realize that they don't know you, you don't know them. You should just carry on being your awesome self. Don’t let anyone's negative, stupid opinions define you."

Depp says it's easy to forget that we all have control over what information gets to us. "If you're getting too many negative comments on Instagram and it's pissing you off, delete your Instagram account! You have control over what you surround yourself with. People feel they need to stay on social media to stay in the loop, but if it's getting to you and making you feel insecure, just don't be on it."

Depp made headlines in August of 2015 by participating in a campaign for the Self Evident Truths Project. On Instagram, Depp stated that she was "sexually fluid," but thinks some people misinterpreted her message.

"The reason I did that campaign was not to come out. A lot of people took that as me coming out, but it wasn't at all. I did it to say the opposite, to say that you don't have to label your sexuality. If one day I decide to do something different, I'm comfortable with that, with whomever I happen to like. I'm just saying to kids today: It's becoming more acceptable not to label your sexuality, to not say I only like boys, or I only like girls. It's something that's so fluid and not set in stone. You might think you're straight for 50 years and then decide that you're gay, or vice-versa. It can change. It's a spectrum, and everybody is somewhere on the spectrum. Like whoever you want to like and feel whatever you want to feel."

In terms of the future, Smith said she looks forward to doing some writing. "I really admire people who act in their own stuff. I saw Amy Schumer's movie Trainwreck, and that's what I want to do."

For Depp, she clearly wants to follow in her parents' footsteps. "I'm having a really fun time acting right now, and I want to keep working hard. This is what I love to do."

With this recipe, you won't be making any of the lasagna components from scratch one by one. When time permits, I do that, but it does take a lot of time and work. So to make things faster and simpler, grab your best choices of premade marinara sauce, béchamel sauce and tomato meat sauce from the supermarket, because their tastes matter to the finished dish. Put them together in this simplified version of lasagna that takes only 30 minutes. Buon appetito!

Evans chose not to have a chin job after being offered some free plastic surgery by "Dr. Miami," who did extensive work on other Teen Mom stars in exchange for permission to Snapchat their surgeries. Rumor has it he wound up deciding not to perform Evans' surgery because he is not an expert on chins, but Evans is trying to spin it like she was the one who turned it down for moral reasons.

When asked how she feels about her onetime friend Lowry's full-body makeover in light of her own decision to forgo more surgery, Evans came across as supportive — but not everyone saw it that way.

"She looks great, and I'm happy [for her]," Evans told Us Weekly. "Whatever makes her happy. That's her choice. It's just not mine. It's her decision. It's her body. No one can tell her what to do."

Lowry interpreted that comment as a huge insult.

New study dispels myth of Facebook 'friends'

More: 6 Reasons to unfriend somebody on Facebook

Much like monkeys, humans have a set "personal network size," says author Robin Dunbar in his study. Our real-life friend groups include about five really close friends and 15 friends in our extended network.

Dunbar points out that face-to-face relationships require an investment of time and energy, which are limited, thus capping the number of people with whom you can practically be friends. But an unlimited number of people can read our Facebook status updates and "connect" with us online: "Being able to interact with many individuals at the same time could in principle allow us to increase social network size dramatically," he says.

But as it turns out, it doesn't. Working with over 3,000 UK-based adults in comparing their social networks with their real-life friendships, Dunbar's study challenges claims that online social networking allows us to increase the size of our actual social networks.

More: I found out my partner cheated on me on Facebook

Regardless of how many Facebook friends you've logged, the study finds most people only have an average of around four real friends in their day-to-day "social clique" on whom they could actually rely in a crisis. And our extended real-life social network includes about 14 people we'd consider "close friends."

But should we throw in the towel and delete our accounts or start posting those obnoxious statuses that say things like, "If you're really my friend, copy and paste this into your status bar"? Not so fast. While the term friend may be misleading, Dunbar found Facebook was still useful for some things, namely preserving friendships over time and distance.

"The fact that people do not seem to use social media to increase the size of their social circles suggests that social media may function mainly to prevent friendships decaying over time in the absence of opportunities for face-to-face contact," he explains.

So maybe it's time to rethink the way we use Facebook. Carefully choose who you share Facebook updates with by creating groups for your contacts that match your real-life relationships. Because, I promise you, your coworker's fiancé's brother probably doesn't want to see an entire album of your baby's first bath and your boyfriend's friend's uncle's cousin probably doesn't care to read your 500-word rant about your terrible IBS. If we all consider our actual audience, we may just keep Facebook fun.
