College student's brush with death from drinking should terrify us all

$

Hanna Lottritz turned 21 this past week, but she didn't take the 21 shots. She didn't go out and drink until she blacked out. The reason? Last summer, Lottritz almost died from imbibing too much at a concert with friends. When she arrived at the hospital, she was unconscious and not breathing on her own. Her blood alcohol level was .41. That is five times the legal limit.

According to Lottritz:

"This situation could have been so much worse. Fortunately for me, I had good people around when all of this took place. I could have easily been taken advantage of when I passed out. I could’ve been left alone to “sleep it off.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the phrase, “Let them sleep it off, they’ll be fine in the morning,” but I’m alive today because my friends got me help. Don’t take a chance if you see a friend passed out from drinking too much. Get them help as soon as possible. I’m very lucky to have made a full recovery, but I know there are others who won’t be as lucky. So please drink responsibly and make sure your friends do too. Watch out for friends, family, even strangers, and take care of them when you suspect they might be suffering from alcohol poisoning. Know the symptoms and be safe."

Her life was saved by her friends. But also, what struck me about this story is the fact that her blood alcohol shot up so quickly. She went from not drunk to blind wasted in a matter of minutes. And that's the message she most needs to get across.

It's not just kids who binge drink, either. More and more, grown-ups, people in their 20's, 30's, and beyond are letting off steam by imbibing too much. This leads to drunk driving, bad sexual choices, falls, and yes, even death. Alcohol poisoning is no joke. And it can happen so quickly.

Last month I was in Mexico with family and we went to a wine bar. We also got some tequila shots. I am not a drinker, so taking three tequila shots and two glasses of wine took me from sober and calm to nearly blacked out and puking. The next day I was horrifically hung over. And I am a mom who is in her late 30's with a husband and three kids.

It can happen to anyone. Sure, it's a funny story I tell to my friends, but I was lucky I didn't drink more. It happened in seconds. I am not a drinker, but I lost control and very much paid the (much milder) price.

People think alcohol isn't as dangerous as drugs. After all, why would it be legal and readily available if it were so bad? But it's simply not true. Alcohol can poison and kill you in seconds. As parents, we need to watch our kids, but as people we need to watch ourselves. And our friends, lest a cocktail party turn out deadly.

What makes us love them (and be slightly envious of them) as a couple so much, you ask?

More: Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton put their PDA on full display (VIDEO)

They are not afraid to publicly show their support for each other as evident by their recent tweets, which started on Wednesday night after Shelton won big at the People's Choice Awards.

Taking to Twitter, Shelton shared his excitement over winning Favorite Male Country Artist and that NBC's The Voice (the show he is a regular judge on) took home the award for Favorite Competition TV Show.

The best part is that he wasn't just busting a move on a random dance floor, but rather serving as a backup dancer for his unknowing daughters, ages 10 and 12, who were making a video of their own moves. You see him sneak up behind them and then totally own that kitchen floor. When they realize he's back there, he's in mid-twerk… or something like that. You have to see it for yourself.

Eatable News: Coffee flour, toxic pizza boxes, a drinking robot and more

1. Coffee flour could be just the thing your Monday morning breakfast needs

We all basically carbo-load on Monday mornings (nothing makes the week seem more manageable than a blueberry muffin, right?), but thanks to a new invention, your weekday comfort carbs could come with a caffeine boost. A professor at Brandeis University has invented coffee flour, a caffeine- and antioxidant-rich flour made from par-baked green coffee beans. Because of its high caffeine content, you wouldn't want to substitute it for regular flour at a 1 – 1 ratio, but a tablespoon here and there gives baked goods a boost. And because it's an all-natural source of caffeine that's digested in food, the caffeine enters your system slowly, giving you a sustained burst of energy that's a lot less jarring than chugging a sugar-free Red Bull at 7 a.m. — Eater

2. Your Friday night pizza box may be tainted with toxic chemicals. Yum?

The pepperoni on your Friday night pizza might kill you, sure, but now it turns out the boxes might pose a threat too. Can't a gal catch a break? Apparently water- and grease-resistant pizza boxes contain perfluoroalkyl ethyls, a group of chemicals the FDA is worried might cause birth defects or cancer. They're also found in sandwich wrappers, microwave popcorn bags and other food packaging. Luckily the FDA has approved a ban of these chemicals in food packaging, which should go into effect 30 days after being published in the Federal Register. In the meantime, you might be better off skipping the delivery pizza and making your own instead. — Food Safety News

3. Trader Joe's is allegedly underfilling its tuna cans. "Oh no..."

Alley cats and thrifty seafood lovers alike are in a tizzy over findings that Trader Joe's may be underfilling its canned tuna. Two of its tunas, Albacore Tuna in Water Half Salt and Albacore Tuna in Olive Oil Salt Added, seem to be chronically light on actual fish. The government requires 5-ounce cans of tuna to contain at least 3 ounces of fish, but testing done by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found that, on average, these two labels contain just 2.43 – 2.87 ounces of tuna per can. This is bad news for aficionados of cheap, diner-style tuna salad sandwiches but good news for those of you who are just suffering through each mouthful of tuna because it's a healthy lean protein and you accidentally had a steak 'n' cheese sub for lunch three times this week. Trader Joe's is now facing a class action lawsuit from a group of tuna-loving customers, and if it goes anything like a similar lawsuit for StarKist tuna did, it could be forced to shell out vouchers of up to $50 to customers who attempted to feast on even a single can of tuna. — New York Post

4. Burger King's 5 for $4 deal is the easiest way to derail your New Year's resolution

Life is tricky. A kale salad pretty much anywhere is going to set you back at least $12, but at Burger King you can get a bacon cheeseburger, chicken nuggets, french fries, cookie and a soda for just $4. And they're not alone — McDonald's recently launched a McPick 2 for $2 menu, Wendy's offers a 4 for $4, and Pizza Hut just launched a $5 value menu too. It's like they want us to fail our healthy eating resolutions or something! I mean, after a busy day of work or running errands, when you're pressed for time, are you going to opt for stopping in at your favorite takeaway restaurant and ordering a salad that costs more than a month's subscription to Netflix, or fly through the Burger King drive-thru and spend 4 bucks on a five-course meal? This clever pricing makes BK pretty hard to resist, but if you're really trying to not fall for the bacon cheeseburger more than is strictly necessary, you can try one of these healthy recipes instead.  — USA Today

5. The robot drinking buddy is the best/saddest invention ever

robot drinking buddy

robot drinking buddy

In a story that will truly have you pining for the weekend's first glass of wine, South Korean inventor Eunchan Park has introduced his, er, special creation to the world. Robot Drinky is an alcohol-drinking robot he created so he wouldn't have to drink alone when he was depressed over not having a significant other. I mean, the sentiment behind the creation is relatable, but if I'm depressed and want to drink with a robot, I'm going to queue up some Futurama, open the spigot on a box of pinot grigio and get to it. Park was decidedly more ambitious: "I put an extra glass in front of me and poured Soju into it. And then, I cheered by myself with the glass of Soju, as though there was someone in front of me. Surprisingly, after that, the taste became totally to be changed!!!!!! WOW!!! So, I could finally find the secret of taste of alcohol totally depends on existence of partner. This is why I made this robot." So goes his YouTube video's description. Isn't this literally why bars were invented? Go find another lonely patron, and offer to buy them a brewski. Sitting at home playing Cheers with the BB8 replica you got for Christmas is not going to make you happier, trust me. Uh, not that I can speak from experience... — Eater

7 Ways to set your kids up for financial success

$
0
0

According to a survey by H&R Block, 75 percent of teens say that their parents are their most important source of financial information.

If parents have a significant influence on how kids learn about money, what should parents be teaching them and how?

The following is a list of some ways you can begin to teach your kids (even young kids) about money management:

1. Talk to your kids about money

Research shows, talking to your kids about money is among the most important money lessons you can provide for your children. But what does that mean exactly? A recent T. Rowe Price survey found that kids whose parents frequently talk to them about money, compared with those whose parents do not frequently discuss money with them, are more likely to feel knowledgeable about personal finance and investing.

2. Talk the talk, but also walk the walk

The dreadful and painful truth is that our kids are watching us and taking note of our every move. Striving to be a good financial role model can have a lasting impact on children. But what if we aren’t perfect? Kids can learn a lot through our mistakes if we make it clear that we wish we had done things differently.

3. Hand over responsibility

Letting kids make their own decisions about how their money is spent can result in lasting lessons in budgeting and saving money. For little kids, this could mean providing them with an allowance each week or month and then letting them decide if they will spend it on games, craft supplies or toys. Teenagers can be given even more responsibility such as deciding how to spend their clothing budget or entertainment budget. The idea is to determine how much you are already spending on these things and hand that money over to your kids.

4. Park your helicopter

It’s difficult, but you’ve got to let your kids make bad — often really bad — choices about how to spend their money. Maybe your teenager decided to spend a third of their clothing budget on a pair of designer jeans and wound up with few other clothes to get them through the week. While it may be painful to watch — don’t save them! — these mistakes will be lasting lessons that will stick with them into adulthood when budgeting and saving are even more crucial.

5. Make financial decisions as a family

It may sound crazy, but having your older child involved in the decision of which mortgage to choose for your new home is hands-on learning at its finest. Investment manager Jeff Tomasulo told Greenwich Time that he recently included his kids in the entire process of buying a new home: “My 9-year-old knows more about mortgages and interest rates and the process of dealing with a bank to borrow money than most people.”

6. Let kids experience credit: With 34 percent of Americans holding an average of $15,609 in revolving credit card debt, Americans need to be educated in how credit works. Teens also need to understand credit since 70 percent of college students will pay for their education with loans. One way to teach your kids about credit is to let them purchase things on credit through you, starting at about age 8. When kids are older, you can let them take out a credit card (that you co-sign) with the understanding that they are fully responsible for all payments. Of course, having regular discussions about how credit and credit cards work is also beneficial.

7. Turn your kids into investment managers

The majority of Americans will fund their own retirement and, therefore, need to decide how to invest their 401(k) or other retirement money. Since the earlier investments are made the more they’ll get in the long run, why not have your teen open a Roth IRA as soon as they get their first job? Sure, they may need that money for college, but even putting $50 in an account a handful of times, and making decisions about where to invest it, can not only be financially beneficial in the long run but provide a foundational lesson in investing. Likewise, companies like GiveAShare allow parents to buy a single share of stock, which could provide an introductory lesson in investing for young kids.

Kerry Flatley is the founder and author of Kids Money Lessons (www.kidsmoneylessons.com) a website created to help parents teach their kids about money including spending, saving, investing and donating.

More: Miranda Lambert learned a valuable lesson from her split from Blake Shelton

"Gwen and Miranda are actually big fans of each other's music and respect each other as artists," a source told E! News. "Miranda has always thought very highly of Gwen and thinks she is an extremely talented artist."

That's pretty high praise, but even more so that it comes from the ex-wife of the man Stefani is now dating. However, Lambert truly seems to be an exceptional, strong woman because she's reportedly not even jealous about the relationship.

"Miranda is happy that they are doing well and wishes the best for them," the source said. "Miranda is focusing on herself and enjoying her new relationship. Miranda is in great spirits!"

Stefani made it clear that she is a big fan of Lambert's when she decided to interact with her on Twitter, but according to the source, she also wants nothing but happiness for her.

More: Miranda Lambert proves she's so over Blake Shelton with new photo

"Gwen thinks very highly of Miranda and really likes her music," the source told the publication. "Gwen thinks it's great that Miranda is dating and in a happy place! Gwen is not the kind of woman to be catty at all, and she avoids drama at all accounts."

It's inspiring to see women uplifting and supporting one another instead of being bitter and jealous. And maybe we should all try and take a page from their book?

Do you think it's great that Miranda Lambert and Gwen Stefani are being so civil toward each other? Would you be able to do the same? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

In an upcoming issue of Good Housekeeping, Joy Mangano, inventor of the Miracle Mop and inspiration for the new film, Joy, reveals the "aha" moment she had when people claimed her specialized, self-wringing mop wouldn't sell.

"People I told were like, 'Who cares?' The aha moment for me was that people didn't even realize they'd care about [the Miracle Mop]. [I've been told] I think about things we need and want before we even know we need and want them," Mangano says.

For Mangano, becoming an inventor was never about getting rich; it was just about sharing a way to make things easier for working moms. "When I wake up, I think, What can I do to help others? I think we all owe the world something. That's the way I am when I'm designing a product."

Of course, it's not easy to take big risks, especially when the welfare of your family is at stake. But Mangano truly believes women are stronger than they think, saying, "I would love to see every woman feel that she knows who she is and how she wants to lead. Every part of me is passionate about having the ability to do what I never could when I was young."

Mangano isn't against marrying a successful man, either. "If some amazing guy plots out of the sky, that's OK, too!" she says.

Whether you're the breadwinner in the family or married to one, Mangano says, "You can't truly be [complete] until you know yourself. You have to trust your instincts in life. There are so many times I'll be talking to executives who are afraid to say the right thing — and I will be the one who says, 'Hey, listen! You know what…?' It's paid off every time to be courageous and not sit in the background."

Her biggest piece of advice about following your dreams is very practical. "Multitudes of people tried to get in the way of my dream. If you can't go around a rock, go over or under it."

The full interview with Mangano will be published in Good Housekeeping on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The movie Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, is currently playing in theaters.

I'm a competitive athlete and even I get body shamed

$

You know what else we had in common?

We had all been accused of being “too much” of something at some time: too big, too small, too curvy, too boxy, too lean, too thick or too much of something. After we got past the initial sting of it, we all basically had the same attitude about it: “I would rather be a strong badass than worry about other people's opinions. Pass me the peanut butter.”

The conversation got me thinking about “shapes.” What defines a body shape? We have all heard the words ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph thrown around. People often categorize body types by fruit: pear, apple or banana. Then, there is the geometric approach: triangle, oval, diamond, double diamond — or hourglass — and, of course, round.

Whether you are a fruit or a polygon or any type of "-morph," it doesn't matter. You know why? Those shapes are faceless, heartless and inhuman. None of these classifications are people.

Real people love, smile, hug, eat, sleep and feel. We can give and receive, suffer and soothe, love and let go, lose and win. We can and we do because we are people, not bananas or apples, or triangles or ovals. There is so much more to us than a simple shape.

For competitive athletes, the concept of body shape — as well as things like bone structure, muscle density, appendage length and stature — can make or break us. Do you know how I was persuaded to start competing? Someone told me my clavicle was perfect for it. That's how minute differences in our bodies can define our success in our chosen competitions.

Despite the fact that all three of us had found success in our given sport — with completely different shapes — there was body shaming dished out to all of us. How is that even possible? How is it possible that three different women with three very different builds all endured body shaming? There really is no way to win is there? The more I thought about it, the more I had to discover.

A simple Google search of female athletes brought the likes of pros including Ronda Rousey, Serena Williams and Elena Delle Donne to my screen. I immediately did a hard fist pump in the air. Yes! This is what I'm talking about: beautiful, strong, classy women of completely different shapes and physiques.

Do you think any of these women care when someone tells them that they are too big, too small, too curvy, too boxy, too lean, too thick or too much of anything? No, not even for a minute because they are owning the hell out of their unique and beautiful bodies. They are all winning — every damn day.

Learn from the pros. Don't let anyone, including yourself, make you feel you are too boxy or lean or curvy or thick or tall or short or imperfect in any way. Find things to love about your body and rock it! Find ways to develop your body, nurture it and make it healthy. Don’t minimize yourself to a type or a shape or a stupid fruit.

Whatever your build is, enjoy it, love it and treat it right. Lift heavy things, sweat, eat well and love your life. For God’s sake, don’t ever let anyone tell you that your body is too much or too little of something! Become who you want to be and own it. That's how you beat body shamers. That is how we win.

Grandmother gives birth to her own grandchild at age 54

After three years of trying to conceive naturally, Kelley McKissack, 28, and her husband were ready to try infertility treatments. While McKissack was able to conceive three times through these treatments, all her pregnancies ended in miscarriage, with the last falling on Christmas 2014. Unable to find any medical explanation for why she couldn’t carry a pregnancy to term, McKissack turned to her mother, Tracey Thompson, for support. Thompson offered to serve as a surrogate for her daughter and was successfully impregnated with one of the couple's remaining four fertilized embryos from their last round of in vitro. Thompson, who had to undergo hormone therapy to conceive in her postmenopausal state, gave birth to her granddaughter, Kelcey, on Jan. 6.

Even sweeter, Kelcey’s name is a combination of Mom's and Grandma's names, "Tracey" and "Kelley."

Grandmother surrogate

Surrogacy often makes the news, but never for such a beautiful reason as this. In most cases of surrogacy, we see an unfortunate legal battle because of the murky and often contradictory surrogacy laws overseas and state to state. In this story, we see one of those rare cases of surrogacy success, where a relative was not only willing but able to successfully conceive a child for another member of the family.

More: 8 Things you never knew about surrogacy

When you think about the fact that upward of 6 percent of married women are unable to get pregnant after one year of trying, it makes sense that family members are so willing to participate. We’ve seen several standout cases like Thompson’s before, where grandmothers have served as surrogates for daughters struggling with infertility and have even birthed twins. Sisters as surrogates are another increasingly common occurrence.

While these stories present a touching and often tear-jerking picture, it’s not so easy to get from point A to point B, even if it’s a family member offering to carry a baby for you. Securing a traditional surrogate is a long and arduous process that often requires the intervention of a surrogacy agency. Using a family member as a surrogate still requires lengthy communication and legal guidance, and on top of that, there’s still no guarantee a surrogate will conceive.

More: 18 Kids' toys that prove girls start paying the 'pink tax' early

Writing for The Organization of Parents Through Surrogacy, Shelley M. Tarnoff, JD, LMFCC, agrees that a family member who offers up their “oven” may seem like a dream come true — not to mention a money-saver. Still, Tarnoff cautions, a successful surrogacy agreement with a family member should include some kind of reimbursement or compensation and will require a written agreement that details guardianship rights. Family counseling is also recommended. New Beginnings Surrogacy Services of New Jersey says a surrogacy agency can also facilitate this process with a family member to make sure a surrogacy contract is up to standard.

As with any surrogacy agreement, laws governing the use of a family member as a surrogate will vary greatly from state to state. The Ethics Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine agrees that using a family member as a sperm donor or surrogate can be ethical in many cases, with a few exceptions, where sister-for-brother or daughter-for-father gestational surrogacy may be frowned upon.

More: Dad's 'sneaky' name for baby girl has gone viral

Successful surrogacy with a family member can be a beautiful thing, as long as all the legalities and medical concerns are taken care of leading up to the main event. As we saw in Thompson’s case, the family member who is willing to go this distance for a loved one — and cut through the red tape — is truly giving one of life’s most precious gifts.

Finding Rover app uses FBI software to find your lost dog

How Finding Rover works

Finding Rover uses the same facial recognition software as the FBI. Instead of identifying criminals and missing persons, the software searches for pets. The technology is surprisingly simple. The program takes 128 facial measurements from an uploaded frontal photo of the pet. Each set of measurements is unique, allowing the pet app to check them against other photos in its database to find a lost dog.

More: 50 Adorable dog coats to keep your pup warm this winter

So far, Finding Rover has reunited over 800 pets with their owners. The free pet-finding app works because it doesn't rely on a single technology like microchipping or collars. Every pet has a face. All pet owners have to do is upload a photo and their contact information. Meanwhile, the person wondering what to do with a stray dog just has to snap a picture of the stray and upload it to the pet app.

"Lost Dog" fliers are like dinosaurs

Calling all of the shelters in your area is an exhausting way to find a lost dog. It also doesn't always work. It can take days for a pet to turn up in a shelter. By that time, the helpful staff member who took your frantic call might have forgotten about you or simply misplaced your contact information. Not even microchipped pets are safe. Not every shelter or vet office has a microchip reader. Collars are even less reliable, and "Lost Dog" fliers are basically dinosaurs. In today's technology-driven world, we need an app for that.

More: 22 Cats who really hate Christmas

Finding Rover helps more than lost pets

According to the ASPCA, 3.9 million dogs enter shelters in the U.S. each year. Twice as many arrive as strays than owner surrenders. What happens to these lost dogs? The ASPCA has some disturbing statistics:

  • 35 percent are adopted
  • 31 percent are euthanized
  • 26 percent are returned to their owners

This means that your lost pet has a higher chance of being humanely euthanized than of returning to you. It also means that your lost pet is taking up much-needed space in already overcrowded shelters. Returning a lost dog to its owner increases truly homeless dogs' chances of finding their forever homes.

More: Dog-matching site borrows cue from online dating to find pups fur-ever homes

Cats love Finding Rover, too

The pet-finding app has exciting potential for cats as well. Less than 5 percent of stray cats are returned to their owners, and feral cat populations are extraordinarily hard to monitor. Finding Rover and similar free pet-finding apps could reunite cats with their pet parents and also help organizations monitor and understand the feral cat problem in the U.S.

The next time your pup goes missing, don't waste paper and ink putting up fliers. Download Finding Rover and start searching for your pet with the swipe of a finger.

Extended use of waist trainers can reportedly lead to compressed lungs and fractured ribs.

And what's a snowy owl doing in Montreal this time of year, cruising over the highway, no less?

"I think they are attracted specifically to the highway because it has open, grassy fields nearby, which is perfect for hunting their favourite prey, which is small rodents," Barbara Frei, the director of McGill Bird Observatory, told CBC News.

"They like to get a good lay of the land and the high lamp posts or other posts that they can perch on while hunting just suits them perfectly.”

She says the owl would likely have spent its summer hunting in the Arctic Circle, and is now migrating down to southern Canada for its "winter vacation."

"We want our event to be huge. We have people coming from overseas and we want to give them that really great experience that I received when I was down there and give them a cultural exchange," said Helen Oro — a makeup artist and designer who puts fun, contemporary twists on traditional beadwork — in an interview with CBC's Saskatoon Morning.

Oro hopes that the new initiative in Canada will raise awareness in the fashion industry about indigenous culture, which mainstream fashion designers have been known to blatantly appropriate: "There is so much going on in the mainstream where they rip off designs from sacred designs from tribes and put them on the runway," Oro explained.

"Some of these designs have been in the families and tribe for years and they aren't supposed to be used [like that]... It's part of their history, their culture, their family — and it tells a story. So, for designers to just grab that and put it on the runway without any knowledge or asking for approval is really disrespectful."

Take Miss Universe Canada's recent totem pole costume for instance. Many were shocked to see Paola Nunez Valdez shimmying around in an eagle-inspired headdress and slinky totem pole costume, which several in Canada's indigenous community thought mimicked sacred designs from the Pacific Northwest. Miss Universe Canada did respond saying the fiasco was a "tremendous MISUNDERSTANDING" — but these types of cultural misunderstandings prove why initiatives like the upcoming Indigenous Runway event are so important right now.

Oro hopes the event will provide the mainstream fashion community with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with indigenous designers, while raising much-needed awareness about Canada's indigenous culture. We can't wait to tune in September and see what these fresh new designers have to offer.

Mad Max: Fury Road's nomination keeps the BAFTAs from being a sausagefest

However, it may surprise you to learn that even on the 1979 original Mad Max, there were some women carving out design and production roles, but few in a decision-making capacity. This year, the BAFTA nominations pointed out a pleasing shocker. Mad Max: Fury Road is a female-driven movie in more than one sense. Not only is the protagonist and hero of the film a woman this time around (Charlize Theron), but the highly nominated team behind the scenes is, fittingly, full of women as well.

They include Margaret Sixel for editing, Lisa Thompson for production design, Lesley Vanderwalt for makeup and hair and Jenny Beavan for costume design.

More: Mad Max: Fury Road: 5 Things you need to know about the dystopian franchise

While individually these are all women of great accomplishments, with many awards and major successes in their industries, taken together they represent a united force as a solid block of women rather than a parcel. Many have been successful for decades, but have been the minority from film set to film set.

Costume designer Jenny Beavan, who has 11 previous BAFTA nominations, including two wins (A Room With A View, Gosford Park) has been humbly quoted as saying, “As a costume designer, you should not be concerned with putting any personal stamp onto your work. You should only do whatever is right for the particular project.”

More: Why Jennifer Lawrence and Matt Damon were snubbed at the SAG Awards

Production designer Lisa Thompson won an Emmy in 2010 for her work as the art director of another very male-dominated film (cast and crew alike), HBO’s The Pacific. Lesley Vanderwalt, also known for Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby, assembled a crew of makeup, hair and prosthetics pros totaling 35 people for Mad Max: Fury Road. She said that it was difficult finding people who were willing to travel to Australia and South Africa to work so hard for so long. “Every day, we would do 60-120 of the background ‘War Boys,’ mainly stuntmen.”

Before the film’s release, and during my interview with Charlize Theron, she made it clear that there was no agenda with Mad Max: Fury Road. She insisted that the intention of the filmmaker, George Miller, was to just portray the truth of his characters regardless of what gender they happened to be. Theron has also been quoted as saying, “When we use the word 'feminism,' people get a little freaked out.”

Is it likely that the film was subversively intended toward a female audience by intentionally employing a collective of female producers, designers and editors who had a universal vision? Action films do well, for the most part, but with so much at stake with a box-office franchise, perhaps Miller didn’t want to take any chances. Ironically, Theron’s ex, Sean Penn, had a big-budget flop in 2015 with The Gunman, which earned $15 million against a $40 million dollar budget. Then there was the $176 million dollar budgeted Jupiter Ascending, which took in a paltry $181 million, comparatively, representing a profit of less than 3 percent. Miller knew that with a $150 million dollar budget, he needed a female-driven Mad Max: Fury Road to be both aspirational and multilayered to be the success he was looking for. In the end, Mad Max: Fury Road took in over $375 million.

Maybe this is a lesson to be learned by action filmmakers: add a woman’s touch and you broaden your appeal.

The BAFTAs will take place on Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Royal Opera House in London. We’ll certainly be watching and cheering on all nominees.

"Remember… believe it when you hear it from my lips," she said.

"The rumors are untrue. I do not have cancer. I am recovering. My doctors have approved my concerts as scheduled in Europe, and as I promised, the postponed shows will be rescheduled. Thank you for your prayers and love."

Radar Online reported earlier this week that a source claims Jackson has a growth on her vocal cords.

"Doctors found a growth on Janet's vocal cords that could be serious," the insider told Radar. "It's a medical condition that has to be taken care of immediately."

The site then quoted a doctor who said that if it is throat cancer, Jackson's career is effectively over.

"God forbid that this should be cancer of the larynx," Dr. Stuart Fischer told Radar. "That would abruptly end her ability to ever perform again… Singing would be impossible… Surgery would be very complex, and followed by months of radiation treatment."

While Jackson emphatically denied the cancer part of the story, she did not reveal what is wrong with her health. Vocal cord nodules are unfortunately common among professional singers — John Mayer was taken out of commission for a while dealing with his — but it could still be something more serious. However, it seems Jackson would rather keep the details private, as is her right.

Jackson's update comes after her Christmas Eve cancellation announcement, in which she said, "Hey you guys… Happy Holidays to each and every one of you. I need you to know, I learned today, from my doctors that I must have surgery soon. It breaks my heart to tell you that I am forced to postpone the Unbreakable [t]our until the spring. Every date will be rescheduled. Please hold on to your tickets. They will be honored in a special way when the new schedule is announced."

Jackson continued, "Please pray for me, my family and our entire company during this difficult time. There will be no further comment. I love you all so much and am ever grateful for your understanding and your love. Gon' b alright." [sic]

Kylie Jenner's week just got worse with these new Tyga rumors

Just days after Tyga was accused of trying to sext an underage model, he stands accused of cheating on Jenner once more — this time with another model, who at least is of age.

Brazilian beauty Annalu Cardoso confirmed to Us Weekly that she had a fling with Tyga, and an inside source filled in all the details.

"Tyga is very careful and waits until Kylie is out of the country," the source explained. "He would text [Cardoso] and ask how she was doing, casual conversation. Then he started asking her to send pics and to meet up. They hooked up a couple of times, but for the most part they would just hang out."

They tried to play it cool in front of his friends, but everyone knew the score.

"She and Tyga wouldn't be extremely affectionate in front of them, but she could tell his friends all knew that they were something," the source said. "If someone else was sitting next to Tyga, they'd move so she could sit next to him."

More: Kylie Jenner's love of social media could pose a serious security threat

The subject of his relationship with Jenner never came up, and Cardoso never mentioned it. "She never wanted to ask because he was acting like someone who didn't have a girlfriend, so she thought those were just rumors," the source explained. "It didn't feel like it was her place to ask him about Kylie and she didn't really follow any stories about Tyga."

Cardoso and Tyga reportedly started their fling in December 2014, while dating rumors about Jenner started up earlier that summer — although they didn't officially go public until she turned 18 in August 2015. Eventually, though, things with Cardoso just petered out.

"He used to find a way to see her, and that stopped," the source explained. "They never officially stopped seeing each other, but she's stopped talking to him."

A new, uber-uncomfortable clip shows OG Maci Bookout enjoying a friendly brunch with her boyfriend, Taylor McKinney, and a group of friends, when the conversation starts to examine the future of Bookout and McKinney's relationship.

The mood of of the outing quickly slides downhill after a friend asks McKinney if wedding bells will be ringing anytime soon, which McKinney answers by making a frantic "cut it out" motion.

"When's that ring coming?" the friend asks as McKinney laughs in a nervous, high-pitched tone.

"When are you going to make me an honest woman?" Bookout quickly interjects, pouncing on the opportunity to talk about a subject that is undoubtedly on her mind all the time.

"I would never talk someone into proposing to me, but at the same time, I get tired of it," Bookout says to the rest of the table. "I get tired of people coming on to me like, 'he's a piece of shit,' because he won't propose to me. You know what I mean? Like, I get tired of defending him... We've been together for three years. We have a child together. We own a house together."

McKinney and Bookout's crew don't seem to disagree with any of Bookout's points, but McKinney still doesn't seem to be giving any hard answers on when — or if — he will pop the question.

"We can end it, just end it," Bookout says to McKinney at the end of the amazingly awkward clip.

Teen Mom fans likely aren't surprised about the exchange, as Bookout has been wondering — out loud to a group of media people — what McKinney's holdup is a lot lately.

"Marriage is something I want in my life," Bookout shared in a December interview with Us Weekly. "In my opinion — and I think Taylor would agree — we pretty much are already married. So it's kind of like, 'All right, what are we waiting on?' I'm confused."

Take a look at the full clip and tune into Teen Mom OG on MTV, Monday at 10/9c.

Tequila is used to getting attention for being controversial and for her scary behavior. She suffered from a drug overdose, a brain aneurysm and jumped out of her window in 2012, then was kicked off of Celebrity Big Brother for being a Nazi sympathizer and showing her support of Hitler.

She gave birth to baby daughter Isabella Monroe in November 2014, and she still is under Tequila's care — she even posted a video of the poor, sweet girl trying to poop last week.

The dirty truth about pooping during labor

$

One of the most common pieces of advice given to new moms who have not yet had the pleasure of squeezing a baby out of their nether regions is to “push like you are pooping.” That is to say, pushing as if you are having a bowel movement is going to help you get your baby out quickly, and it may also have its intended effect — by causing you to poop a little while giving birth.

More: 5 Myths about labor debunked

Most new moms who are already nervous about a whole team of doctors and nurses seeing their vag don’t like this one bit. They want to do everything they can to avoid this embarrassing side effect, which might explain why “how to prevent pooping during labor” has become a popular Google search phrase. Easing these fears surrounding childbirth is important, considering that a 2012 Norwegian study found birth to be over an hour longer for women who were afraid of delivery.

You asked, and we answered — or rather, we asked skilled medical professionals who know the answers to break down the burning question on every newly pregnant woman’s mind: Is it possible to give birth without pooping yourself?

What the experts say

Whisper this question to your doctor, nurse or midwife, and 10 bucks says that he or she won’t blink an eye: The fear of pooping during labor really is that common. “I always first remind women that it is a normal physiologic process, and we do not pay much attention to it as care providers. If noticed, it simply reassures me that a patient is pushing effectively,” explains Laurie MacLeod, a certified nurse midwife at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

More: True horror stories from the labor and delivery ward

MacLeod adds that a bowel movement that occurs naturally during labor may not be as bad as it sounds: “We simply wipe the stool away and minimize anyone else noticing it as much as possible. Prior to the pushing stage, women are able to get up and use the restroom privately. Enemas are no longer routinely used in labor as they do not improve outcomes and are uncomfortable for women. Often during labor, women are not eating normally as most women consume clear liquids in labor, so they are less likely to pass stool. It is also common in normal labor to have loose stools, so a woman's body often will take care of passing stool naturally prior to the pushing stage.”

What the moms say

The trustworthy expert opinions are all fine and good, but we all know that pregnant women can get a little cuckoo when surfing the Internet in the wee hours after a night of tossing and turning. Expectant moms are still looking for poop-prevention remedies, no matter how many doctors and midwives caution against it.

It was for this reason that Mary Apple created Pretty Pushers, the first legitimately cute and functional hospital gown designed to cover up all the unpleasant stuff. While Apple swears by the Pretty Pusher gown for a more comfortable and covered birth, she says she also took the advice of her midwife and used a “natural colon cleanser” before labor began. "At 41 weeks, my midwife suggested castor oil. The taste and texture were pretty awful, so I mixed it with orange Gatorade. At first nothing happened, and then I found myself on and off the toilet for the next few hours. Although the pain felt like what I imagined contractions would feel like, they were in fact just abdominal cramping — in other words, poop pains! Although I was disappointed to find that that I was still at 1 cm when I got to the hospital, I must attribute my 'poopless labor' to that magic castor oil/orange Gatorade concoction."

More: SheKnows guide to giving birth

When it all comes down to it, there’s no magic bullet that can guarantee you won’t push out a little something extra during labor. Most health professionals encourage pooping while pushing as a healthy byproduct, and some moms swear by natural remedies that should only be used under the care of a doctor or midwife.

Barring natural remedies and a pre-labor enema that doctors no longer recommend, there are a few common sense things you can do to "get moving" before you deliver:

  • Eat plenty of fiber — clean eating leading up to birth is not only good for the baby, it can help your body to naturally cleanse stool as your uterus starts to contract.
  • Drink plenty of fluids — drinking enough water will help to prepare your body for the marathon that is to come, and it will keep your bowels moving right along.
  • Take frequent bathroom breaks — in the early stages of labor and before the real fun begins, go to the bathroom often to give your body the chance to release stool.

The good news is that when it’s all said and done, pooping during labor isn’t that big of a deal — amidst all the chaos, you’re probably not going to know it happened anyway.

Lady Gaga, Taylor Kinney's racy magazine cover sparks criticism

Gaga and Kinney are the latest cover models for V Magazine, and the photo set to appear on the cover — while visually stimulating — was not professionally shot. In fact, it's a selfie Gaga and Kinney took after having sex on a canvas covered in paint.

As referenced in Gaga's tweet, all sales from their V Magazine issue will go to her Born This Way foundation.

"I asked [Taylor] to collaborate with me on a project to raise money and awareness about mental illness, [and] he immediately brought my attention back to this idea," Gaga wrote in the opening letter of the issue, which she guest-edited, according to Yahoo Style. "We made love on the canvas on a Sunday in Chicago... We made love amidst chaos. We talked about shootings. We made love amidst terrorism. And we talked about how people’s hearts are also suffering all over the world as they watch and witness a swell of violence. We made love amidst violence."

More: Lady Gaga slut-shamed for the most absurd reason (PHOTOS)

It seems like a well-meaning gesture, but some are criticizing the project for two main reasons: One, many fans feel the price to purchase the magazine is way too high, and two, not everyone thinks having sex with your fiancé and then taking a picture of it is all that charitable.

At $50 a pop, the magazine issue is certainly not cheap, but one Instagram user was quick to point out the price point was because the proceeds go to charity. "The cost of this cover is more than the others as 100% of proceeds support Lady Gaga's charity. You can read details of the charity on vmagazine.com," the Instagrammer wrote in response to nay-sayers.

But that hasn't stopped people from complaining.

Other critics are focusing on the fact that Gaga and Kinney taking naked pictures of themselves isn't exactly as artistic and charitable as they — along with their loyal following — think it is.

Surprisingly, there hasn't been any word of slut-shaming or bashing Gaga and Kinney for the charity shoot, which is probably because the cover photo is very tasteful, despite both subjects appearing nude.
