Shark Tank gets its most deluded entrepreneur yet

Plenty of parents would be happy to pay good money for a product that would prevent their kids from making a huge mess at mealtime. But can such a product generate tens of millions of dollars in profit? According to EZPZ's Lindsey Laurain, the answer is an undeniable yes! The Sharks, however, disagree.

More: Shark Tank fans go wild for Robert Herjavec's dance moves

Laurain raised several eyebrows when she entered the Tank, dressed in a questionable outfit and full of unbridled enthusiasm. She shared a ridiculous movie that featured a group of kids with normal dishes being way crazier than your average child. When presented with EZPZ mats, these kids miraculously transformed into well-behaved youngsters.

As ridiculous as the EZPZ video was, the initial pitch was far more ludicrous. Laurain asked for $1 million with a mere 5 percent in equity. This is one of the most optimistic pitches of the season, and it means that Laurain believes EZPZ is worth $20 million.

EZPZ

Despite having one of the least convincing pitches of the season, Laurain managed to attract the interest of a handful of Sharks, who were impressed with the quality of her product. Kevin O'Leary was initially one of the most dismissive of the Sharks, but he eventually made a very generous (and possibly foolish) offer: $1 million for 5 percent equity. However, if Laurain cannot secure $10 million in sales within a year, Mr. Wonderful gets 20 percent equity.

More: Shark Tank gets morbid with inappropriate comments about cancer

O'Leary wasn't the only Shark silly enough to make an offer. Barbara Corcoran promised Laurain $1 million for 5 percent, but with the following stipulation: The money would be delivered in regular installments over the course of four years. Neither of these pitches were evidently good enough for Laurain, who turned both Corcoran and O'Leary down.

Suffice to say, viewers were not impressed with Laurain, although a few did speak favorably of her product. The rest, however, referred to her as deluded and out-of-touch.

With a good pitch and a more realistic outlook, Laurain could accomplish great things with EZPZ. She could have scored an amazing deal from the Sharks, but instead, she walked away empty-handed.

Mama June reveals the truth behind Sugar Bear's same-sex encounters

In spite of what you might have thought up until this point, the main focus of this season of Marriage Boot Camp is not going to be Althea and Benzino arguing, or Sean and Catherine being boring (and occasionally acting scandalized), or even Sundy not wearing underwear (Fine, you do you. I'm not here to tell people how to live their lives). After Friday's episode, it looks like the focus, at least for a while, will be on Mama June's accusation that Sugar Bear cheated with not only women, but also men.

If no one ever again checked their significant others' text messages, it's pretty likely that reality TV wouldn't exist, since that seems to be its engine. Mama June confessed to Sean and Catherine that the texts she found in Sugar Bear's phone weren't what she expected, and when she confronted him about it, he responded by saying, "What you're not gonna do is call me gay." Oh, Sugar Bear. Repeat after me: Sexuality is fluid. On Twitter, fans were definitely shocked and tried to figure out if what they heard could really be true.

More: Mama June gets caught at strip club getting unique lap dance (VIDEO)

There are more than a few loose threads here, and we haven't even approached the fact of Mama June's more-than-problematic relationship with a sex offender. Having sex with men if you also happen to be a man doesn't make you gay or bisexual, it's much more complicated than that. (If Sugar Bear is in fact gay or bisexual, let's hope this show can handle it with great care.) It looks pretty bad for Sugar Bear right now, in terms of being able to deny texting with dudes, considering there are apparently actual texts to prove it, but there is always the possibility of him claiming that he changed women's names to men's. Why would you do that though? Why are you such a mystery, Sugar Bear? Can we ever truly know you?

Of course, the show ended right at the point when this could have gotten resolved, so viewers are hoping that next week they will get answers. But since it's still relatively close to the beginning of the season, let's be real about how this is probably going to get dragged out until the bitter end, when these two stand in front of each other — and Jim and Elizabeth — in fancy outfits and decide whether or not they're going to break up. Until then, it's probably going to be loud and rowdy.

More: Spencer Pratt talking about fatherhood will totally change your mind about him

What do you think is going on here? Did Sugar Bear cheat with men, or is this all a big, convoluted mess? Or both?

Thandie Newton calls out coffee shop chain for offensive statue

More: Thandie Newton had her baby on bathroom floor

Newton posted an image of the controversial item — a young black boy holding up a basket of coffee beans to promote Colombia Narino espresso beans — on her Twitter account on Monday January 4 with the caption "Seriously @Starbucks? At the counter - Loin cloth and Safari hat on a black child. Happy New Year circa 19th century."

Starbucks' customer service department quickly responded to the 43-year-old actress:

On January 6, the company issued the following statement:

"Serving as a welcoming place for everyone is core to who we are as a company. As we became aware of the offense, we immediately removed the figure from our store. We aim to provide an inclusive environment for all customers and communities in which we serve, and we are working with our partners (employees) to avoid similar incidents from happening in the future. We apologize for the offense caused."

This is just the latest in a string of controversial incidents for the global coffee chain. Last November, it was attacked by an evangelical Christian group for its non-festive ombre red holiday cup and accused of waging a "war on Christmas". In December, the company was called out by Momofuku boss David Chang after it began selling bagel balls, baked goods strongly resembling a product that's been produced by Momofuku sibling Milk Bar for many years.

Earlier in 2015, Starbucks axed its "Race Together" campaign — which involved baristas writing #RaceTogether on coffee cups in a bid to start a dialogue on race with customers — after it was slammed on social media.

What do you think of the Starbucks display? Let us know.

Why are little kids better at makeup than I am?

0
0

If you haven’t seen the Bella Rose makeup video circulating YouTube and Instagram showing everyone how to create a perfect face, you need to watch it:

Kid Makeup

Kid Makeup

This is not the cute type of video where an adorable little girl is playing with mommy's makeup.

Little Bella Rose is wearing a full face:

  • Foundation
  • Contour palette
  • Highlighter
  • Blush
  • False eyelashes
  • Eye shadow
  • Brow pencil
  • Lip gloss

This child is using makeup brushes and a beauty blender. How many of you are using beauty blenders? In the interest of full disclosure, she didn't do her entire face on her own. Australian makeup artist Emily Louise created the look and then allowed Bella Rose to do her thing with some of the contouring, eye makeup and lip gloss application.

Bella Rose is just one of the many elementary school children playing the makeup game on social media. Guess what? They’ve been doing this for years now. They do pay attention to what people say in the comments of their videos and pictures. When they get makeup suggestions, they apply them in their next videos.

They watch makeup tutorial videos on YouTube, look through Instagram and watch the older women in their lives applying makeup. These little girls are paying attention and are quick studies. Little Miss Bella Rose's makeup application skills are the result. These kids will teach and inspire more young ones like themselves to apply makeup at an advanced level. That kind of sounds scary doesn’t it?

When you think about it, little girls playing in mommy's or big sister's makeup is nothing new. I used to do it and looked like a two-dollar floozy afterwards. However, I wasn't at this child's level until my 30s. Even now, I still won't wear false eyelashes.

I know some of you feel these children are too young to wear makeup. We all know their adorable faces do not need it. In fact, neither do we. In the case of these little ones, this really is just playtime for them. Yet, this form of play has them advancing on us at a rapid pace.

Should we catch up or should they slow down a little? Let's face it: Their childhood is different from the ones we had in the 20th century. Is this the new normal for little girls — perfecting their makeup skills before they hit the double-digit age bracket? To tell you the truth, I think it is.

5 Types of people you find in your workplace jungle

0

The snake

Although manipulative in nature, office snakes appear smoothly professional and show a glitteringly polished skin to their supervisors. Office snakes whisper intriguing disparaging remarks to coworkers about others. Unfortunately, the falsehoods that office snakes speak make sense.

Do you work next to a snake? If so, don’t ignore her. Snakes strike the unwary more frequently than those on guard. If you let the snake’s venom reach the bloodstream of your office reputation, it may be too late.

More: How to survive workplace mean girls

Puma

The reclusive puma lives in the shade. Leave the puma alone and you do fine. Wander too close or force the puma into a corner and watch out. Pumas handle challenging assignments with quiet grace, so others underestimate them until the office puma shows its claws. If you want to stay on the office puma’s good side, understand that they protect their turf against all newcomers.

Hyenas

Hyenas generally travel in pairs and don’t appear to take things seriously. While laughing hyenas can get on anyone’s nerves, realize that if you react to them, you become a hyena yourself. If you consider others in your office mere hyenas, you let their exterior blind you to their cunning and capability. Hyenas reinforce each other so they can gang up on and bring down larger mammals.

More: Why you should steer clear of the workplace rumor mill

Lion

Most workplaces have a “hear-me-roar” lion. Lions expect you to believe that what they say is true because they say so. If you react with a “who-does-he-think-he-is” attitude, you ignore reality. Seemingly benevolent and always aware of their majestic position on the organization chart, lions exercise power simply because they can.

While you can’t ignore the lion’s strength, you also can’t afford to make false assumptions based on the office lion’s size or stature. Don’t fall for the lion’s myth; while lions possess power, they don’t always know what’s going on.

Elephant

You may not take the ungainly elephant seriously. Beware. If you wander too close, you may find yourself stomped when the elephant decides to throw his weight around. If so, and even if you are in the right, you will find yourself flatter than a pancake.

Your workplace jungle

Have I missed some of the animals in your office jungle? Do you work next to a boar or been recently quilled by a porcupine? Regardless of the animals in your office jungle, keep your wits about you.

7 Essential outfits that are perfect for both work and play

0

I have compiled a list of seven awesome outfits — and of course accessories to help dress up your look — for those of you who want to play hard after staring at a computer screen all day.

1. The little black dress

Little Black Dress
Image: Bree Fesh/SheKnows

This sweetheart neckline LBD looks a little risqué for the office by itself; however, pair it with a nice fitted blazer during the day and you’ve got it made. In this case, all you need to do is ditch the blazer when you leave your office, and you’ll be ready to paint the town red.

Dress: Forever21 (Thrifted) $15, Heels: Christian Louboutin (Tradesy) $480

2. Shift dress

Shift Dress
Image: Bree Fesh/SheKnows

The shift dress is basically a godsend when it comes to dresses. The high neckline makes this piece perfect for the office, while the flowy cut makes it a fun and flirty look for going out for the evening. Whether paired with flats or flashy heels, this dress always steals the show.

Dress: Banana Republic $84, Earrings: Kendra Scott (Rocksbox) $36, Heels: White House Black Market $79

3. Peplum sweater and pants

These pieces are chic, sophisticated and understated all at the same time — the perfect combo for both work and after hours. For the work place, this pair is perfect on its own. For a cool evening look, pair this outfit with some statement jewelry and patent heels.

Peplum Sweater: Banana Republic $39, Earrings: Jared $199, Necklace: Jenny Bird (Rocksbox) $110, Pants: Ann Taylor LOFT $69, Heels: Christian Louboutin (Tradesy) $389

4. Swing dress and statement necklace

Swing dress

My favorite: the swing dress! This type of dress is essential because much like the shift dress, its overall appearance is professional for the work place. However, when paired with the right accessories at night, this coy little dress can just become so subtly sexy.

Swing Dress: Terry Jolo Brand $249, Earrings: Mirina Collections $60, Necklace: Mirina Collections $149, Heels: White House Black Market $79

5. Collared dress

Collared Dress
Image: Bree Fesh/SheKnows

The collared dress is such a classic office look; I am positive every woman who works in an office has one. However, we typically see them donned in a solid color. To switch up this look, try going with a fun and fabulous pattern. This still gives you the classic, sophisticated look, but with a bit more flare for the evening.

Dress: Terry Jolo Brand $449, Earrings: Kendra Scott (Rocksbox) $36, Skirt: Banana Republic $59, Heels: Christian Louboutin (Tradesy) $389

More: 30 Times it's socially acceptable (& awesome) to wear black tights

6. Patterned pants

Paterned Pants
Image: Bree Fesh/SheKnows

Cropped skinnies in a clean print with a simple sweater is an everyday, easy-to-rock look for work. It can also be dressed up with a pretty necklace and some heels after hours for a great laid-back look that keeps its chic charm.

Sweater: Pendleton $69, Earrings: Yuri’s Jewelry $45, Necklace: Mirina Collections $149, Pants: Ann Taylor Loft $69, Heels: White House Black Market $79

7. Two-piece dress and feathered shawl

Dress and shawl
Image: Bree Fesh/SheKnows

Last but not least, my favorite style trend this year: the two-piece dress. I’ve been digging this look so much because it looks so feminine and pretty paired with a fitted blazer in the office, but it can become so fierce and sexy at night when paired with a feathered shawl and stilettos.

Dress: BAR III $79, Shawl: $10 (Thrifted), Heels: Christian Louboutin (Tradesy) $480

Married by Mom and Dad tackles arranged marriage in America

0
0

The premise behind Married by Mom and Dad is arranged marriage in modern times. From a press release for the show, we learn: “Married by Mom and Dad is a modern take on voluntary arranged marriages, based on old school tradition and real world success. Four singles who have been unable to find love in the world of modern dating, have now agreed to put their future into the hands of their parents. We follow each mom and dad through the process of meeting and vetting the potential future spouses and watch their kids meet their life partners for the first time. But the real work begins as the couples get to know what they like, dislike, and everything in between."

More: Married At First Sight: Yes, people really do want to wed a total stranger

I really enjoy the idea of parents and stepparents setting up their children to find love and marriage. Why? There is something more intuitive and magical about this concept than Married at First Sight, which is a social experiment for a group of experts who combine their experience and research to pair six strangers into couples for marriage.

Previously, I approached the challenge of only using science to create love. I think we have a case of science versus intuition in the battles of these two arranged marriage shows. But, I’m going to approach this debate from a relationship-minded perspective to give you something to think about. I definitely like the concept of Mom and Dad setting up the couple. I think science in love is more complicated than just numbers and statistics, but you get a different feel for the matches when the parents meet potential partners.

More: Living together may be better than getting married after all

Both of these shows market the idea of marriage being the fundamental element that holds relationships together. According to the statistics I found on divorce, over 40 percent of first marriages end within 13 years, over 20 percent of first marriages end within five years and over 75 percent of divorced people get remarried. These are daunting statistics. It doesn't seem like the concept of marriage creates loving bonds and lasting, healthy relationships.

It’s the process of creating a healthy relationship that allows for commitment to occur as a by-product of love, not the other way around. The idea of parents helping to select their child’s partner has something to it. Who knows you better than your mom and dad? I find this intriguing and possibly a more prudent way than allowing science to dictate the match. Even with the parent’s intuition and knowledge of their child, the difficulty with these shows is they both take out the dating process to grow a relationship, which might sometimes be a necessity in relationship growth toward commitment. Let’s give credit to the process of getting to know someone with time and progress.

Claire Underwood’s style is unpretentious. She isn’t a trend chaser, adorning the latest and greatest. Her look is achieved from a collection of timeless pieces pulled together to achieve a very classic look: a fitted skirt and silk blouse or fitted dress, high heels, handbag and that’s it. She brings balance into her hectic life by running to reduce stress. She takes time to enjoy mealtime.

3. Her hair makes a statement

Claire Underwood consistently delivers and gives us what we want on the screen. Her fashion sense is unmistakable. She has style power. Let’s make no mistake: Style power isn’t just for the powerful and wealthy. All of us can have style power. In an industry that celebrates youth, Claire Underwood inspires us to be our best.

11 Cruelty-free drugstore makeup brands that won't break the bank

0

1. Annabelle

Annabelle is a Canadian beauty brand owned by Groupe Marcelle, which doesn't test products or ingredients on animals. More good news: Annabelle is not sold in China, a country that has animal test requirements for cosmetic products.

Try Annabelle SkinTrue Foundation for a lightweight, natural-looking base that looks like skin. (Annabelle, $11)

More: 15 Drugstore beauty gems you have to try

2. Ardell

A well-trusted and go-to brand by makeup artists and beauty lovers for false lashes, Ardell's false lashes are not only cruelty free but also vegan. Try Ardell Lashes #Demi Black for a bolder eye makeup for the evenings. (Walmart, $5)

3. e.l.f.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that one of the most budget-friendly beauty brands, e.l.f., is cruelty-free and carries a large number of vegan products. The paragraph below is taken straight from the brand itself:

"We do not test on animals or endorse such practices. Our products do not contain animal derived ingredients. Beeswax has been replaced by synthetic beeswax and lanolin has been replaced by Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladinpale-2. We currently support HSUS and are partners with PETA in the Caring Consumer Project."

Try e.l.f. Eyebrow Kit to create your full, bold brows. (Walmart, $4)

4. EcoTools

Not only are the EcoTools high-quality brushes made from highly sustainable materials such as bamboo, the bristles are also soft synthetic instead of animal hair, which makes them vegan. Another reason to love EcoTools? They donate one percent of their annual sales to 1% for the Planet, an alliance of businesses committed to leveraging their resources to create a healthier planet.

I bought EcoTools' six-piece Day-to-Night Brush Set in 2013, and the brushes are still one of my favorites today. (Walmart, $20)

More: 11 Drugstore cruelty-free makeup brands that won't break the bank

5. Marcelle

Just like its sister brand Annabelle, Marcelle is also owned by Canadian company Groupe Marcelle, which doesn't test products or ingredients on animals nor sell in China.

I personally am a huge fan of their products and swear by the Duo Eyebrow-PRO. (Marcell, $15)

6. Milani

Milani is certified by both PETA and the Leaping Bunny program as cruelty free. There are many reasons to love the brand: the products are some of the best drugstore gems in the market, and the quality rarely disappoints.

Try: Milani Baked Blush for a gorgeous, long-lasting glow on your cheeks. (Well, $8)

7. NYX

Despite the fact that NYX is currently owned by L'Oréal, it remains a cruelty-free company and is certified by PETA.

According to the company, "NYX Cosmetics is certified and acknowledged by organizations, such as PETA, as a cruelty-free brand. We are committed to producing 100 percent cruelty-free cosmetics. We do not test any of our products on animals."

I own and love so many NYX products, but their Butter Gloss is my favorite lip gloss on the market. Beautifully pigmented without being overly thick and tacky, they are the only lip glosses I reach for. (London Drugs, $8)

8. Physicians Formula

Another PETA-certified, animal-friendly group, Physicians Formula tests the safety of their products "using such alternate methods as 'in-vitro' testing, human clinical evaluations and human use-trials under the supervision of a Board Certified Dermatologist."

Physicians Formula is on the higher price range for a drugstore brand, but they do have some hidden gems. Try Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Loose Powder, which was created for sensitive, breakout-prone skin for a smooth, natural finish on the skin. This loose powder doesn't settle into my fine lines and is perfect for days when I don't feel like wearing a foundation. (Physicians Formula, $15)

9. Prestige

This is a lesser-known drugstore brand, which I've only seen sold at London Drugs here in Canada. I've personally only tested their Classic Lip Liners, and they are beautifully pigmented and glide across the lips smoothly without any tugging. (London Drugs, $4)

10. Sonia Kashuk

Sonia Kashuk was exclusively sold at Target and is on the higher end of drugstore brands. Unfortunately for Canadians, Target has since shut their doors in Canada, so the only way for us to get our hands on her products is online (try Amazon.com or eBay.com).

Try: Sonia Kashuk Velvety Matte Lip Crayon, you won't be disappointed. (Amazon.ca, $13)

11. Wet n Wild

One of the most budget-friendly drugstore brands, Wet n Wild is PETA-certified, cruelty-free and also makes a point to work with cruelty-free third party vendors. Another bonus point: Wet n Wild has a decent list of vegan products.

Try Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color lipstick in shade Stoplight Red, which is one of their best-selling products. (Walmart, $4)

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for the slow cooker pot)
  • 1 (1.5-pound) pork tenderloin fillet
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 3 teaspoons cornstarch (for the sauce)
  • 1/3 cup apple juice (for the sauce)

Directions:

  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. On a piece of foil that's about twice the size of the garlic, lay the bulb of garlic, and top with olive oil. Fold the foil into a tent shape, and seal the edges.
  3. Bake until the cloves are lightly browned and tender (about 30 minutes). Let cool, and squeeze out the roasted garlic.
  4. Coat the inside of the slow cooker pot with olive oil.
  5. Add the salt and pepper to all sides of the pork.
  6. Rub the roasted garlic on all sides of the pork.
  7. Drizzle honey and sprinkle thyme on all sides of the pork.
  8. To the slow cooker, add the pork, and drizzle the Sriracha sauce on top.
  9. Cover with the lid, and let cook on the low setting for 4 hours.
  10. Heat a small pan on low heat, and add about a cup of the sauce from the slow cooker and the apple juice.
  11. To a small bowl, add the cornstarch and just enough water to make a liquid paste. Whisk together.
  12. Slowly add the cornstarch mixture to the pan with the liquid from the slow cooker while continuously stirring. Let cook until the sauce thickens. Strain in a small wire mesh strainer, reserving just the liquid.
  13. Transfer the pork to a cutting board, and slice. Top with lemon juice, and transfer to serving dishes.
  14. Drizzle the sauce on top of the pork, and serve with your favorite side dishes.

How growing your residual income can help your future

0
0

Residual income comes from building an asset that continues to pay you after the work has been done. A book, movie or song is an asset to the people earning royalties from it. A house is an asset to the landlord being paid rent, and a business is an asset to the business owner who does not need to be involved in the day-to-day activities anymore.

More: 3 Financial questions to ask before the year's end

To create residual income, a business needs to have products that are sold over and over again rather than trading the business owner’s time for money, and it needs to be something people value. And preferably something you truly believe in and have a passion for. Having this fire will make it less like work at the beginning and honestly, the more you truly love what you do, the more you will attract people to it.

In my business, I have resources at my disposal to help me along: talented teammates who are sharing their strengths across the lines. As I share more and more about my love for these products and how they have helped my family and me, more people want what I have and that creates a marketplace. They see the changes in me, and then start to experience them themselves.

More: Improve your finances in 6 weeks with these simple goals

The snowball eventually takes hold and as I start making more residual income, they make more residual income. This means residual income will grow even faster once you pay it more attention by leading your team, replicating others to lead and handing them the reins. You can start slowing down and doing what you love without losing your income. In my business, I will be making $100,000 per month in nine years just by moving up a rank a year. Look at that number for a minute and let it sink in. What would you do with $100,000 per month and time?

Now I see what you are about to say: Is this one of the multilevel marketing schemes? Unfortunately, multilevel marketing companies are generally thought to be like a pyramid scheme. I can honestly tell you that this is not the truth. Multilevel marketing companies basically give you control of your own career path. Even Forbes Magazine endorses such companies as the wave of the future. Read "Is MLM a Bad Word" by Jody Greene or "Would You Join A Multi-Level Marketing Company For Retirement Income?" by Robert Laura.

Before you turn away from your friend who is excited to tell you about her new career path, open your mind to the fact that this person is doing something they love, creating a business they are in control of and is super excited to share it with you. Then, think about how having some of that residual income can impact your life. Sometimes all it takes is a leap of faith. In my industry, it's less than $200 to get started. That's a pretty safe investment compared to the potential earnings!

6 Ways to make your resolutions less stressful

Adopt a positive attitude

As another year has finished, it’s time to reflect on lessons learned and new directions that you would like to take. If you’ve noticed that your life has taken on a negative tone through the various roadblocks that you may have hit, try adopting a more positive attitude. If you’ve recently gone through a bitter divorce, look at the changes as a start to a new chapter. If your finances are in disarray, set a realistic budget that allows you to get out of your monetary depression. No matter what is thrown your way, it’s best to see the positive side in what you’re dealt.

Update your surroundings

If a move is on your list of things to do in the coming year, you can set a smaller achievable goal until you’re able to make that happen. Updating your dwelling with a fresh coat of paint or furnishings can boost your mood.

Enjoy in moderation

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is dieting and exercise. Unfortunately, it’s a resolution that is typically broken before the end of January. Instead of depriving your body of the things that you enjoy most, you can welcome them in moderation. If you have a passion for chocolate, you can still indulge. However, limit yourself to one piece of chocolate each day. If you’re looking to eat healthier, try to incorporate a few nutritional items into your diet such as blueberries and yogurt, salmon or whole grain bread.

Make it count

Hitting the gym during the week can be challenging with work and family life. You can make every movement count by keeping active no matter where you are. If you have an office, keep a few dumbbells on hand and do some curls and squats in between customer calls. During lunch, take a walk instead of sitting at your desk perusing the Internet. Grab a co-worker or plug in your favorite book on tape or podcast as you walk. After a long day, you would probably rather spend time with the family instead of working out. But, you can get your partner and children involved by going for a bike ride together, walking to the park, sledding or ice-skating.

Be nice to others

Nothing can zap your good feelings more than talking badly about someone. In addition to the shady gossip, this form of bad-mouthing is a poor reflection of yourself. Adopt the mantra: “If you have nothing nice to say, refrain from saying anything at all,” for a healthier outlook on life. While everyone has their faults, you’ll feel happier focusing on a person’s positive attributes instead.

Treat yourself

If you try to cram as much into your day as possible, you may be feeling stressed and out of sorts. One of the easiest and most achievable tips for a happier and healthier new year is to be good to yourself. You can start by getting a good night’s rest. Before bedtime, ditch the electronic gadgets in favor of some relaxing stretches and meditation. You should also schedule time into your busy planner to do something for yourself each day, such as taking a walk, reading, gardening or catching up with friends.

5 Ways to stay healthy in your forties

0
0

There are numerous physiological changes associated with aging. These include a decrease in heart efficiency and bone density, and cholesterol and blood pressure may start to increase, as does your risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. No matter how you slice it, none of the above symptoms are good for longevity at any age. So, here are five tips to be fabulous over 40 (or at any age).

1. Ditch the diet

Diets wreck your metabolism and result in yo-yo weight gain and loss. The key to successful weight management is adopting a healthy eating plan and sticking with it — for life. A well-balanced diet includes plenty of fruit and vegetables, healthy fats, proteins, calcium and water. Eat fresh and unprocessed foods as much as possible, since most processed foods will contain calorie-laden, unhealthy ingredients, like saturated fats and sugar. Reduce saturated fat in your diet and include more calcium-rich foods — such as low-fat dairy, spinach and white beans to stay healthy. Stick to low-glycemic foods — nonstarch vegetables and minimal sugar — to ensure long-lasting satiety and minimize the likelihood of hunger pangs or sudden drops in energy levels.

More: Bashing your body is a surefire way to get fatter

2. Eat for energy

Eating for energy, rather than pleasure, is key to any successful dietary plan. Being fabulous over 40 doesn’t just happen — we have to make it happen! Pleasure eating happens when foods are available to you, rather than out of real need. Would you really take the time to make and eat those bacon wrapped tater tots if they weren’t staring you in the face on the buffet table? You crave those chips in your pantry because they are there and readily available. You may have kids and may not be able to get rid of all temptations, but why not buy yourself some veggie chips (low salt) so you can snack smartly? Once you begin to think of all food as energy, rather than as cravings, you will be on the cornerstone of health success.

3. Satisfy your sweet tooth

Satisfying your sweet tooth is another great obstacle for many of us. We all have cravings, but it is how we manage and respond to those cravings that keep us healthy. Have an occasional sweet treat, but be mindful and keep your health goals intact. So, choose the pear over the piece of cake. For those times when a piece of fruit simply won’t do (talking to you, PMS), studies show that after three bites our cravings are satisfied. If you must have the refined sugar treat, make it the treat you actually want and have three bites. Test this theory and let me know your results. You will be amazed at how well it works to satisfy your sweet tooth.

4. Hormone havoc

Hormones can wreak havoc on our bodies — and never is that truer than in our 40s. Most women hit perimenopause (the time four to five years prior to menopause) and start experiencing hormonal fluctuations and symptoms, such as mood swings, low libido, hot flashes, irregular periods, vaginal dryness and cognitive problems. Listen to your body. Take note of and avoid your triggers, such as heat, spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine and smoking. Track your emotions and your periods to help determine if the two are connected — there are great phone apps that can help you keep track. Studies show excess weight, stress and smoking can increase the frequency and intensity of symptoms. Listen to your body and your hormones will wreak less havoc on you.

More: Why you can blame hormones for the dreaded belly bloat

5. Plan and prepare

The best laid plans are forgotten if you’re not prepared. Has this ever happened to you: It is 4 o’clock and you ate a decent lunch at about noon, but you find yourself starving and know you won’t make it until dinner. You go to the pantry, only to find your kids' Rice Krispies Treats or other processed treats, and you’re so hungry, you gobble it down in record time. You’re hungry again 20 minutes later. So frustrating, right? The truth is, those empty calories have no nutritional value, so they can’t possibly fill you up. If you have fruit with fiber on hand with a smear of natural nut butter (protein), that will get you through those hunger periods much better. Plan ahead and be prepared for those times when hunger strikes.

The body’s ability to heal and recover can take longer as we age and stress, and lack of sleep can result in faster aging and an inability to fight infection or disease — your body’s way of saying it is at "dis-ease." Don’t ignore a pain or problem that persists beyond a few days. As always, if in doubt, seek medical advice.

Starting today, you can make small changes so you can live your best life possible and be fabulous over 40. After all, age is just a number, right? We can turn back our body clocks by taking control of our health and making small changes each and every day that make a big impact on our health for our 40s and beyond.

Donald Trump actually made me a better blogger

0
0

Obviously, I was wrong.

Like many others, I am mystified... mystified... by the appeal of this man. I think his candidacy and the public reaction says a lot about the inner psyche of our nation right now. His candidacy can also teach us a lot about communicating. As I was doing my usual round of new year content for my recipe and health blog, I began to think about how The Donald communicates.

This is a time of year when many people are frustrated. The excess of the holidays tends to make most people feel like they need a change. The beginning of a new year begs reflection on the year past. For those who didn't achieve what they wanted to, this can be a bitter time.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized I could borrow a few of Mr. Trump's most effective tactics to capitalize on this sentiment to create action. Here are a few nuggets I borrowed from his playbook.

Be a straight shooter

When you're in the business of discussing health or self-image, there is the tendency to be very gentle. It's not hard to understand why. In my niche, people struggling with obesity who have had weight-loss surgery, life itself is marginalizing enough. Why make it worse by being blunt?

Answer: At the end of the day, people don't need to tell you there is a problem — they already know that. Most people want an answer that makes sense and seems possible.

Whether I agree with Trump or not, he tends to offer simple solutions — some might say oversimplified solutions — to some of the most common frustrations America has. While we could argue all day about the actual helpfulness of this type of rhetoric, we can't argue with its effectiveness. When this man talks, many people listen. But more importantly, many people understand what he's saying. That's because he's being a straight shooter. He says exactly what he thinks the problem is and offers a solution that seems to directly address it.

So, as I went to write my content, I sought to do the same. I didn't ease into it. I put out there what I see as my audience's biggest problems — which I know because I spend a good deal of time asking them. Try being a straight shooter in your posts. The worst that can happen is you get a lot of pushback. But, guess what? Pushback means you're communicating with your audience!

More: What I learned about adulting this year

Don't sugarcoat things

This sort of goes along with being a straight shooter, but I would argue it's possible to clearly and simply identify a problem, then proceed to sugarcoat what it will take to solve it.

That's not what The Donald does!

Say what you want, but Trump didn't get to where he is by being an idiot. He knows his messages are provocative. By not sugarcoating his words — and probably more importantly, not being apologetic for doing so — he knows he exudes a sense of authority.

Many times, a blogger's audience looks to them as a source of authority. Sugarcoating your words can water down that authority, and thus erode your audience's confidence in you.

More: 5 Things I learned from monetizing my blog this year

Now, it's a tricky thing to tell hard truths, but for my website, I figured out that the solution is to know my audience. I constantly ask them questions and engage in conversation. I know their struggles and I know what they respond well to and what would offend them. I would never intentionally offend my audience. Knowing what I know about them, I tailor my advice to what I know they are going through, but I don't water it down. If they need to change, I say they need to change. Most of the time, they agree with me!

Don't get so bogged down in facts you forget human experiences

This one is really tricky. Mr. Trump sometimes seems to throw facts completely out the window! In my estimation, it seems to be in favor of recognizing the collective feeling of his audience. His audience feels frustrated, disempowered and infringed upon — if his words are to be believed. For his purposes, it doesn't really matter why they feel that way, they just do. So, he speaks their language.

Now... if he gets elected, will he do half the things he's said to his audiences? There's no way to know that just yet, but my money is on "no" — after all, there is that thing called "checks and balances" in our government. Still, Trump knows how to speak to his audience's feelings and make them feel like he understands them.

In my communications, I don't get so bogged down in health science and facts that I forget the process of getting healthy is hard. I know for a fact that experts recommend logging your food intake to stay mindful of your eating. Does that make it easy? No! I recognize that. I recognize that sometimes forming healthy habits sucks.

More: 10 Things I learned from surviving a website hack

I don't sell my audience the narrative that they should just "buck up and do the right thing." I realize that they have feelings and that those feelings are valid. More importantly, I recognize that their actions are driven by their feelings, so if I want to inspire real change, I first have to get them to listen. By acknowledging their feelings, I earn trust, which works toward that goal.

So... thank you, Mr. Trump! I have no idea where your candidacy will go, but I do know one thing for sure: You've taught us all a lot about how to connect to the innermost thoughts and feelings of audiences and how to leverage those thoughts and feelings to make seemingly impossible things happen.

I’m so excited for the premiere of Murder She Baked: a Peach Cobbler Mystery tonight (January 10 at 9 p.m. EST on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries). The entire cast is planning to join me in a tweetalong for tonight's premiere, so we’re definitely going to be having fun with the viewers. I hope you join the chat with us as you watch.

My other big project has been a kitchen cleanse. The leftover desserts are gone, and only healthy foods are back. I’ll admit that we got a little carried away during the holidays—a lot of eating out, and not enough stocking our fridge with the best options. As my kids went back to school, it was the perfect time to grocery-shop for all the healthy elements that go into breakfast before school and lunches during school.

While I was at it, I bought a ton of fresh veggies and fruits for the whole family. I’m looking forward to home-cooked meals again, and I love creating new recipes to try with my family.Tonight, I’m making a baked fish and some quinoa with green beans for dinner. We’ve been inhaling the delicious tangerines in season at the market right now, and of course the bowl of fresh blueberries is front and center. Such perfect treats!

Poignant photo shows woman hugging her boyfriend after violent car crash

They came out of the accident injured, but alive, and a friend took a poignant photo of the pair when they saw each other for the first time afterward. Stovall soon shared the photo on Facebook, along with a message thanking her boyfriend for doing what he could to protect her during the accident.

"Three seconds," she wrote. "That's how long we had from the moment we drifted off the road until the truck hit the pilar at 85mph. In three seconds Hunter had to handle a situation that would either kill us immediately or save our lives. He keeps beating himself up for my pain but he saved my life. He keeps saying 'I should have protected you and I didn't do that' but he did exactly what he needed to do to make sure my life didn't end."

She went on to talk about the severity of the crash, which happened when Hanks' Toyota Tundra drifted off the road and hit a bridge support.

"I'm overwhelmed at how little damage was done to Hunter and I in a wreck that should have chopped our bodies in half," Stovall continued. "... The way God helped Hunter to respond exactly the way he did behind the wheel, spinning the truck exactly where it should have to be able to smash into the pilar (sic) directly in the middle of me and Hunter so we were both untouched...that doesn't just happen. God doesn't throw protection around like that for no reason. He does it because he's not finished with us."

The pair were released from the hospital 48 hours after the accident, which paramedics told Stovall should have ripped them "in half."

"Here is the miracle part: no broken bones, concussions that lasted not even 24 hours, no internal damage, and just a few stitches in my knee and hunters (sic) face," she wrote.

The pair credits God — and their love for each other — with helping them make it out relatively unscathed. "I lay my head on my pillow and can close my eyes knowing God's not done with me and I can sleep with a peace that. He's hopefully proud of my efforts of reaching others," Hanks wrote on a separate Facebook post.

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)

You're a remarkably independent woman. You pretty much do what you want when you want to do it. You pride yourself on your financial autonomy, your emotional self-sufficiency and your drive. So what's a man supposed to bring to your life — other than the obvious? That's the question you'll be asking yourself this week when the Venus/Uranus trine in fire stirs up all of that restive energy. You may think you know what you want in a mate, but the stars show that you haven't the faintest clue. Thankfully they'll be filling in the blanks over the next few weeks.

TAURUS (April 19 - May 19)

Just because he says he wants to take a break doesn't mean he's calling it quits. Lovers pick up on all kinds of signals — the ones sent and the ones we don't think we're broadcasting. Instead of warming up for another verse of the rejection blues, you might take this time that Jupiter is retrograde to ask yourself why you're relieved. Did he suspect your feelings weren't simpatico? Or was he voicing something you couldn't? Whether this provides you with an out or a compelling reason to stay depends on you. Like it or not, the next move is yours.

GEMINI (May 20 - June 19)

News through the grapevine that he's been asking after you (or maybe it's an unexpected friend request?) makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. You really did have fun together even if your relationship didn't work out. And this is the difficulty with modern communication. Do you just leave well enough alone or do you follow up? Well, it's not every day when retrograde Mercury forms a trine to retrograde Jupiter in Mercury's own sign. Astrology has a funny way of holding space until the stars align and your horoscope this week shows that he's willing if you're able.

CANCER (June 20 - July 21)

There are times when we have to give people their space and this is one of them. The sun/Mercury conjunction on Jan. 14 shows that a lover or spouse is retreating into himself. He's struggling with pressing concerns and they're taking up a lot of time and energy. You'll want to help but your advice would only fall on deaf ears. Trust that if he wants support then he'll ask for it. Give him lots of latitude and he'll re-emerge on Jan. 26. Meanwhile you might want to catch up with friends who have been wondering where you've been lately.

What do you do when the chemistry's right, but the person's all wrong? That's the dilemma you'll face when Venus trines Uranus on Jan. 12. Now the easy thing to do would be to throw him back in the water and cast your line again. However, Uranus has a way of upsetting our expectations and broadening our horizons. Yes, his politics will be questionable, his manners brusque, and his income level has a lot to be desired but there's something about him that you just can't shake. You might want to take a chance on love and go against type.

Virgos don't mate easily. Astrology books say it's because you're a perfectionist and people fail to live up to your expectations. Actually your search for the perfect mate is a stalling tactic aimed at keeping men at arm's length. You're afraid that if you met the right guy, then you'd fall in thrall to him and lose yourself in the process. Virgos are always afraid of losing their autonomy, but that's more about you trusting yourself than it is about him. Thankfully you've been through enough dry runs that you're at a point where you can commit without hesitation.

Sometimes it's when you're on the verge of losing someone that you realize you had feelings all along. This is what will be happening this week when Venus trines Uranus and then squares retrograde Jupiter. It looks like you've finally come to your senses and are ready to tell him what he's been longing to hear. Unfortunately it won't be that easy because it could also be argued that the only reason you're fighting for him is so that nobody else gets him but you. An unflattering thought, but it's one worth considering before you do something you might regret.

You need to lean in to your Venus. This isn't easy for someone who was born under Mars, the planet of "that's-what-I-want-and-I'm-going-to-get-it." In other words you're used to hot pursuits and not being hotly pursued. This week's Venus/Jupiter square shows a complete cosmic role reversal and you could suddenly find yourself the object of competitors' affections. Competitors? Yes, because it looks like there's more than one fellow hoping to make a love connection with you. Try your best to enjoy the attention. Dating different guys at the same time isn't your style, but it could grow on you given time.

Careful. The Venus/Uranus trine on Jan. 12 followed by a Venus/Jupiter square on Jan. 17 will stir up all of your "I could do better" tendencies. This may be the case, but you could also be overreaching your grasp. It depends on whether or not you have a realistic appraisal of your relationship. This isn't always easy to judge (even in the best of times) but it usually gets down to companionship. Romance, sex and excitement will come and go, but true companionship is always there. Not all great loves of your life are romantic. Some of them may be friendships, intellectual affairs or spiritual bonds.
