Jason Aldean's controversial Halloween costume sparks huge backlash (PHOTO)

More: Jason Aldean gets engaged to former mistress

The Nashville Gab published a photograph last week, which it claimed was of Aldean. The photo shows Aldean posing for a photo with his wife, Brittany Kerr, and a group of friends, while wearing black face paint, a dreadlocks wig, black sunglasses and a chain around his neck. And we're sure we don't need to explain why this choice of outfit has caused so much anger and disappointment.

Following the backlash, Aldean's rep revealed to The Guardian on Tuesday, Nov. 10, that he went as Lil Wayne for Halloween, saying, he was "dressed as rapper Lil Wayne for Halloween" — although the rep failed to elaborate on his decision.

Aldean has made his fair share of mistakes in his personal life, but this one has taken things a step too far, and it has resulted in people taking to Twitter to call out Aldean for wearing blackface.

I have struggled all my life to get fit

$

I was a young teen who became fixated on the idea of losing weight for a better quality of life. That later became an obsession with the number on the scale and the size pants I wore. I fell into two common eating disorders — first, anorexia and later bulimia. For a time, I dealt with it on my own until the feeling of control slipped out of my hands. I turned to my mother and my private doctor. With their help, I managed to gain some sense of balance and further educated myself on the permanent damages I could cause.

If manipulating my body wasn't an option anymore, I later turned to mechanical alternatives. I became a cardio-bunny and salad-eating supplementation junkie. I had a real issue with my curves, and I tried everything to tame them. I would invest hours at the gym and sometimes come back for a second session. I blame ignorance and lack of knowledge. It wasn't until I was in my mid-twenties that I discovered the gym, and it was there where I learned the ins and the outs on shaping your body. It also helps that society has opened its mind to all shapes and size.

The gym has become my sanctuary. It's become my school, and the people there have become friends and my second family. I've further educated myself through accredited classes and have applied everything I've learned to find my balance. At the age of 30, I am in the best state of health possible, which is now my number one focus. I am also the strongest I have ever been. I have to say that eating right and implementing extra activities has become my fountain of youth.

You can watch my video on YouTube for my full story, and I hope that by sharing my story you can truly not feel alone during your fitness journey. If there is one thing I would like to stress in this post, it's that quality of life should be about optimizing your health, not your physical appearance. It took me years to learn this; and now that I live by it, I'm in such a better state of body, mind and soul.

Make sure to tune into my channel as I will be providing more informative videos as well as fitness routines and meal plan ideas.

Survey reveals how generous the tooth fairy is & it depends where she lives

More: Unique new trend: Baby teeth jewellery

My own tooth fairy experience is fairly recent (aside from losing my own teeth, of course, which was such a long time ago I've forgotten how much I got — I'm guessing around 20p was the going rate). My son is almost 8 but he only lost his first baby tooth after he turned 7. I was so relieved that it had finally happened that I was apparently overcome with excitement and left a £5 note under his pillow.

I couldn't keep that up, of course, and as the teeth continued to drop out their value began to drop down.

Anyway, if you're wondering what the going rate is, the people at Carisbrook Dental in Manchester have carried out a survey, which reveals that the tooth fairy is way more generous in some parts of the U.K. than others.

The average amount left by the tooth fairy is £2.10, which is 60p more than five years ago. One in 10 lucky kids received £10 per tooth, which equals a whopping £200 for a full set of baby teeth.

More: Is the tooth fairy actually good for kids?

London's tooth fairies are the most generous compared to those in other cities but then again everything costs more in London, right? Bristol comes second at £1.90 per tooth and right at the bottom of the list is Newcastle, where a baby tooth is only worth £1 on the open market.

Here's the list in full:

London – £2.50

Bristol – £1.90

Aberdeen – £1.87

Birmingham – £1.75

Cardiff – £1.72

Leeds – £1.60

Manchester – £1.55

Belfast – £1.42

Edinburgh – £1.34

Coventry – £1.32

Leicester – £1.29

Nottingham – £1.26

Plymouth – £1.22

Sheffield – £1.20

Liverpool – £1.15

Sunderland – £1.12

Glasgow – £1.10

Bradford – £1.07

Wakefield – £1.05

Newcastle – £1

"The Tooth Fairy is a much-loved family tradition and a very good one," dentist Tariq Idrees from Carisbrook Dental told the Metro. "We tend to find that parents and children who are most excited by the Tooth Fairy and make sure that it visits with each lost tooth also take dental care most seriously, too. They tend to be the children who brush their teeth most regularly with little parental pressure and suffer the least tooth decay."

The Rock steals hearts with his clever baby gender reveal

Following reports of a pregnancy a few months ago, The Rock finally revealed what the couple has been "cooking" on his official Instagram and Facebook pages: It's a girl!

Leave it to a big personality like The Rock to break the mold of a "traditional" Instagram gender reveal. We've seen celebrities spill the gender news to their Instagram followers plenty of times before — like Gwen Stefani's announcement of her third son last year and Kelly Clarkson's gender reveal for her second baby, a boy, just weeks ago. You may notice a distinct similarity between Stefani's and Clarkson's Instagram gender reveal announcements: the use of the hashtag #itsaboy.

More: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West reveal the gender of their second baby

The Rock, of course, had to do things just a little bit different. Already the father to a 14-year-old daughter from his first marriage, The Rock's gender reveal started with an ode to the strong women he knew and ended with a more ambiguous hashtag that left us guessing: #BringOnMoreEstrogenInOurHome. Excited fans put the pieces together and figured it out — yup, the adorable couple is expecting a little girl!

The Rock gender reveal

The Rock gender reveal

Now you can thank The Rock for a brand-new parenting trend that is likely to be sweeping the Internet any minute now. Social media gender reveals started coming on strong a few years ago, as all of the once-young Facebook users became parents. We've seen couples stage elaborate pranks, create specialty photo shoots and throw now-customary gender reveal parties that involve the cutting of a pink or blue-filled cake — and yet, the Internet gods aren't satisfied. Every expecting parent is still looking for a new and better way to announce their baby's gender on social media.

More: Creative ways to announce your baby's gender

And then we have The Rock, a sweet second-time dad coming in cool as a cucumber. Instead of creating a viral video or writing his baby girl's gender in the sky, Johnson kept it classy. He made his announcement through the use of a clever hashtag that implied an increase in #GirlPower in his house.

More: Bachelorette DeAnna Stagliano shares the weirdest gender reveal ever (VIDEO)

Because of this rise of the gender reveal, most expecting parents are feeling the pressure to put on a show for their friends and family before they even have a baby. To move us far, far away from this high-pressure parenting game, let's hope The Rock's subtle "gender hinting" catches on as the hot, new gender reveal trend. Even a celebrity like The Rock knows what our mothers have been trying to tell us all along: Sometimes, less is more.

Rapid Reads: 7 Big stories of the day

1. Thanks for your service

Today is Veterans Day and the perfect time to say thank you to those who've served or are currently serving the country. As a show of gratitude, many businesses and restaurants are offering free things for veterans. Starbucks is offering free coffee, Great Clips is giving free haircuts, and IHOP is offering free red, white and blue pancakes. In more serious Veterans Day news, today President Obama will call on Congress to pass measures that will help veterans gain access to disability, health care and education benefits. After all, the best way to say thank you to vets is to take good care of them. — The New York Times

2. Snoozefest

Last night the fourth GOP debate took place, and it was a lot of the same stuff we've been hearing. The candidates faced off on immigration (Trump still wants to build a wall), taxes, foreign policy, and there was a lot of back-and-forth between them. At one point, Trump told Carly Fiorina to stop talking so much and she didn't slap his hairpiece off, which I think shows great restraint. The candidates are finally starting to focus on each other, rather than bashing Obama or other Democrats. That's a good thing, since there can only be one nominee and primary season is fast approaching. — CBS News

3. Celebrate

President Obama has made history as the first sitting president to ever appear on the cover of an LGBTQ magazine. Obama graces the cover of this month's OUT Magazine and has been named their "Ally of the year" for his "evolved" stance on LGBTQ issues, especially gay marriage. The celebration comes in the middle of a tough week for Obama. Congress just passed a defense bill that prohibits moving Guantanamo prisoners to the U.S. — a key part of Obama's plan to close the prison. He's also appealing the Supreme Court's ruling against his executive actions on immigration. You win some, you lose some. — Refinery29

4. The beginning of the end

Yesterday the New York State attorney general ordered fantasy football sites DraftKings and FanDuel to stop accepting bids from NY residents. He began investigating the sites a few months ago after a DraftKings employee released betting data prior to game day and went on to win $350,000 from his fantasy picks on FanDuel. The attorney general called the sites a "multi-million dollar scheme intended to evade the law and fleece sports fans across the country." It's likely that other sites will follow New York's lead and then maybe we won't have to watch anymore of those obnoxious FanDuel commercials during Sunday games. — The New York Times

5. Treat yo' self

Today is the opposite of Valentine's Day in China: it's Single's Day, which is a day devoted entirely to spoiling the crap out of yourself. The day was created by online retailer Alibaba and has become something of a Black Friday for China, except everyone shops online for gifts to give themselves. The other difference is it's way more profitable. Alibaba's Singles Day sales reportedly brought in almost $3 billion in the first half hour and they're expected to top $11 billion before the day is over. That's an awful lot of self-love. — CNN Money

6. Heartbreaking

An 8-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the death of a 1-year-old baby. The baby was reportedly left in the custody of the 8-year-old while her mother and some friends went to a nightclub. Authorities say the boy allegedly "viciously attacked" the baby because she wouldn't stop crying. She died of severe head trauma and major damage to her internal organs. The 8-year-old will be tried in juvenile court. The baby's mother, Katerra Lewis, has also been charged with manslaughter. Everything about this story is just awful. — Newsweek

7. Espresso shots fired

Dunkin' Donuts just released a holiday-themed cup, amid the controversy surrounding the Starbucks red cup and the "war on Christmas." The cup features the word "joy" encircled by a red and green wreath. Many are questioning whether the cups are a response to the Starbucks fiasco, but a Dunkin' spokesman says the company has always used festive cups throughout the holiday season. Deck your halls with that, Starbucks. — Fox

But if she's trying to avoid media attention and keep things private, her new picture is definitely sending out some major mixed signals.

On Tuesday, Stefani took to Instagram to share a picture of herself, Shelton, and Pharrell Williams looking very happy as they posed for a picture on the set of The Voice (Shelton and Stefani look particularly cozy as she leans her hip into him). She captioned the picture with, "[heart] them @nbcthevoice gx."

If Stefani is worried about the potential public backlash over her new relationship — since she and Shelton both recently got divorced — she need not be concerned, because fans are clearly thrilled, as evidenced by the comments on the post.

jfisla wrote, "You go girl... A real man at last. You deserve that and so much more."

"No more pretending to be happy for the camera, now you really are! It's about time, soooo long overdue!" pennyclancy wrote.

"Cute couple!!!!! Gwen and Blake," gushed izzydeal28.

Other comments include, "Surrounded by the ones that make you smile the most," "Love you and Blake! Don't let the haters tell you any different. They're just jealous you have Blake and they don't," and "Looks like Pharrell is Gwen and Blake's love child!"

And sadie.patricaaa also had a message for all the haters out there. She wrote, "Hey don't listen to all them haters I might just seem like another billion fan but don't listen to them, YOU AND BLAKE ARE MENT [sic] TO BE, I'm glad he got a divorce bc it lead he to you. I really don't expect you to answer me back bc you have one-million (prob) fans but I love you so much and your such a inspiration [sic] one day I hope to audition for the voice [sic] and I hope to be on your team. That's my only dream."

Low-tech alternatives for infertility treatment

$
0
0

Exploring low-tech treatment options

Treatment options could include lifestyle changes such as weight loss or gain; cessation of tobacco, alcohol and drug usage; minimal caffeine intake; and the adoption of a regular daily exercise routine. In some cases, surgery may be required to remove growths within the uterus such as polyps, fibroids and/or scar tissue. Laparoscopic surgery may be required to diagnose and treat conditions such as endometriosis, which can lead to scar tissue formation, ovarian cysts, tubal damage and blockage — all potential causes of infertility. Other treatment options include ovulation induction and assisted reproductive technologies (ART).

For patients not experiencing regular periods, ovulation becomes the goal of treatment. In this case, the production of a single egg in response to treatment would signal a favorable response. In patients who are already maintaining regular periods, an egg is produced each month, so the goal of treatment would be to increase the number of eggs produced each month.

Fertility drugs may be used to cause the development of one or multiple eggs. It is important to remember that as the number of eggs increases, so does the likelihood of having multiple babies, such as twins and triplets. For this reason, it is very important that patients be monitored during infertility treatments with ultrasound and/or blood work in order to assess fertility drug response.

The most commonly-used fertility drugs are:

  • In pill form — These include Clomiphene citrate and aromatase inhibitors. The pills are usually taken for five days, beginning any time between day two and five of the menstrual cycle.
  • Injectable drugs — These appear in the form of gonadotropins and are initiated on the second and third day of the menstrual cycle. These are taken every evening, and progress is monitored with blood work and ultrasound. Monitoring ensure that patients do not hyper-stimulate, and allows physicians to adjust the dose of the medication if necessary.

Once a patient produces an adequate response, ovulation is ensured by administering an injection of HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Ovulation usually occurs 24 to 36 hours later.

The patient will then be instructed to try conceiving at home or come into the office for artificial insemination. In this procedure, the partner’s sperm is washed and processed in the laboratory and then placed directly into the uterus. This increases the number of sperm and also places the egg and the sperm in closer proximity.

Achieving successful conception

Success rates will be dependent on a number of factors, some of which would include age and individual test results. Once testing is completed, success rates for various treatment options will be presented by the physician. Traditionally, ovulation induction can be performed for a number of cycles depending on patient age and response. If a patient fails to conceive with ovulation induction, then it may be recommended that the patient proceed to ART. For some patients, the best success comes from proceeding directly to ART.

  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice

Directions:

  1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine all the dry ingredients, and set aside.
  3. Using a handheld mixer, cream together the sugar and butter. Slowly add the molasses, pumpkin and egg, and continue beating.
  4. Slowly add the dry ingredients, and continue beating until well incorporated.
  5. In a small, separate bowl, place the additional sugar.
  6. Using your hands, make 12 balls of dough with the batter, and roll each into the sugar until fully coated.
  7. Place the dough balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and bake for 10 to 12 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven, let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 1 to 2 minutes, and then transfer them to a cooling rack.

Slowly add the powdered sugar, and beat until incorporated. Lastly, add the vanilla and pumpkin spice, and beat again until mixed together.

Jessa Duggar's baby needs one more thing before she'll share his name

Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald welcomed their baby boy just five days ago, after a rough delivery that landed Jessa in the hospital. Just yesterday, they shared a few first pictures of their newborn on Instagram, but they're holding off on sharing the baby's name. The reason? Well, they just haven't decided yet.

MoreAshton Kutcher & Mila Kunis break their own rules to share baby photo

In her post, lots of fans wanted to know what Baby Seewald's new moniker would be, but Jessa isn't spilling the beans yet. In the post, she tells everyone what the holdup is:

"Every time I look into this precious little face, I can't believe he's really mine! I feel blessed beyond measure! So in love! #BabySeewald (P.S. Still haven't settled on his middle name! Looking forward to sharing with y'all as soon as we decide!)"

More: What moms need to know about the 'spying' Barbie doll

Before Baby Seewald made his appearance, the Seewalds were courting baby names on their family website and fan page, setting up a poll that allowed followers to add their baby name suggestions. Perhaps she'll grab one of the top five baby boy name results — Luke, Zachary, Sawyer, Noah or Benjamin.

A few fans are suspicious of the decision, like one commenter who simply said, "You mean as soon as you get paid to release his name on the front of a magazine!" in response to Jessa's caption. Of course, that's always a possibility, especially given the family's popularity, but it's just as likely that Jessa is facing the conundrum so many new parents face — she's just waiting for the name that seems right.

More: 16 Family Christmas card photo ideas that will wow your relatives

Even if you've had a name in mind for months, it can sometimes fall by the wayside when you meet your beautiful baby for the very first time. What you thought was the perfect decision might seem totally wrong when you finally meet the little person you've been waiting for for months.

Sometimes, even when you know your baby's first name is spot on, the middle name can present more of a challenge, and it's not unreasonable to want to have all three names lined up before you finally spill the beans. There's a lot to consider when you're choosing a middle name for a boy: Will you honor a loved one? Will it sound right paired with the first and last name? What if your child wants to be called by their middle name later? All these factors will play a part in the name you choose.

Whatever her reason for waiting, Jessa is in good company. Practitioners of Islam and Judaism traditionally wait seven days to name their babies, and in places like China and India, some parents hold off on choosing for a month or more.

Let's hope we don't have to wait that long!

Details of Gavin Rossdale's affair with his nanny are completely shocking

Earlier this year, there were rumors that Rossdale's affair with the family's nanny, Mindy Mann, led to the downfall of his marriage; and now a source has revealed details to Us Weekly about exactly what went down.

Everything came to a head when one of Stefani's other nannies reportedly found steamy exchanges between Rossdale and Mann on the family's iPad — and that's how Stefani learned of her husband's infidelity.

"The iPad was linked to Gavin's phone," a family source told the mag. "One of the other nannies discovered the exchange and told Gwen."

Stefani reportedly discovered explicit texts, as well as nude photos of Mann, and arrangements for her and Rossdale to meet up for sex. While Mann was quickly fired, Rossdale reportedly tried to explain the exchange as mere "flirtation." It was only months later that he finally confessed to his indiscretions and Stefani decided to end their marriage.

Her husband's confession "completely devastated her," the source revealed. "She was mortified, livid, and embarrassed."

The publication goes on to reveal that the sexual relationship between Mann and Rossdale allegedly lasted for more than three years, including the time when Stefani was pregnant with the couple's third son, Apollo (now 20 months).

"This was done right under Gwen's nose," a source told the publication.

The details are shocking, and if the report is true, you really feel for Stefani — but you also can't help but be inspired by how she has picked up the pieces and bravely continued with her life.

A better way to attune to your attachment-challenged child

$

The acronym is A.T.T.U.N.E.: Awareness, Turning toward, Tolerance, Understanding, Non-Defensive Responding, Empathy.

Gottman says, "Bonding created by turning toward any negative affect and fully processing conflict and failures to connect... has the power to create trust."

That is exactly how parents need to build trust — by engaging their challenging children with the A.T.T.U.N.E. principles.

If you are gasping for air right now because living those principles in relation to your family would be impossibly monumental, then let me count to three and we can all collectively gasp together. There are so many days when parents of challenging children think we have climbed Mount Everest and back because we simply resisted losing our temper. Some days it is a fine line, isn’t it? Let’s be honest.

What I know is that A.T.T.U.N.E. principles, as a daily practice, will make the days easier. The challenges won't magically disappear, but they will seem less daunting when your heart and mind focus in a concerted effort to stay in a secure state of attunement.

When your child is engaging in extreme negative emotion — also known as dysregulation — be aware that his brain is in a neuro-biological, chemical cascade and your brain is, too, in response. For a start, breathe to soothe yourself. Just breathe.

Recipe for following A.T.T.U.N.E. principles when tempers flare

  1. Go closer with awareness of the therapeutic moment, rather than farther away in hopelessness, hurt, anger, punishment or disgust.
  2. Turn toward the negativity with tolerance and understanding for your child’s feeling of upset.
  3. Don’t take it personally — it really isn’t about you — and you will be able to non-defensively respond with safe, calm and loving voice tones, also known as prosody.
  4. When you ATTUNE, empathy will be more easily accessed in yourself to give to your child, who is usually looking angry and operating out of pure, knee-jerk fear.
  5. When the recipe is practiced well enough — not to perfection — there will be stronger trust and a stronger bond.
  6. Be kind to yourself. It is hard to learn to ATTUNE to so much pain in the heart of your beautiful, wounded child.

Love Matters.

JWoww's pregnancy confession is one a lot of moms will relate to

But not long after she shared the good news, she was accused of drinking while pregnant during a club appearance in Missouri. Boo.

Now Farley is speaking out and explaining what really happened that night. The Jersey Shore star sat down with HuffPost Live and explained the situation. Was she drinking at the club appearance? Yes. Was she out-of-control drunk? No.

And now for the important thing: Did Farley know she was pregnant? Of course not!

Farley, who's currently a few months along, had a club appearance in September. (The club owner is the one who sold the story, FYI — nice, right?) "I either conceived that night — go figure — or the week before," Farley said. "And when it comes to pregnancies, when you actually pee on the stick, you're already four weeks pregnant. So a lot of people don't realize that." She then continued, "So, yeah, I found out [I was pregnant], like, two weeks after that, and I would never. I would never. And to be honest, I wasn't even drunk out there."

Here's the thing: The chances of women drinking or doing something they shouldn't do during pregnancy — eating deli meat, drinking unpasteurized juice — are pretty high before they know they're actually pregnant. Especially if they're not necessarily trying, which, who knows if Farley and husband Roger Mathews were? For all we know, this could have been a complete surprise for the couple, in which case, why wouldn't Farley have a few drinks?

Of course, if someone is actively trying, it's obviously smart to talk to their doctor and try to be as healthy and safe as possible. But it's not worth beating yourself up if you slipped and had a glass of wine or a turkey sandwich before you found out you were pregnant. It happens. And you're going to be OK.

There are definite, proven reasons why you should not drink alcohol during pregnancy. It's harmful to you and your baby. That said, about 18 percent of moms do wind up drinking in the first trimester — likely because they don't know they're pregnant — compared to the 4.2 and 3.7 percent who have alcohol during the second and third trimesters, respectively. Moms, for the most part, know that drinking while pregnant is wrong. If they do it early on, it's likely because they were unaware, not because they were reckless. Pregnant mothers — including Farley — shouldn't be chastised for that and made to feel like they're terrible people. That's simply not the case.

Of course, though, as with pretty much any and all things related to motherhood, odds are pretty high of feeling some level of guilt about enjoying a few glasses of wine before you knew you had a bun in the oven. So take heart in this: A 2013 study found that women who imbibed early on in pregnancy were neither putting their baby at risk for premature birth or low birth weight nor subjecting themselves to the risk of high blood pressure complications during their pregnancy.

Of course, women shouldn't take these studies and findings as a message that it's OK to drink during pregnancy, because again, there are definite risks. But if you conceived your baby after a boozy night of merlot, there's more than likely no need to worry — and no need to scold a fellow mama.

Farley likely felt bad for drinking when she was technically pregnant, so it's a shame that it wound up being plastered in the pages of a tabloid (as if moms don't deal with enough!). But hopefully she can rest easy knowing that she's OK — and that she's not alone.

Did you drink alcohol before you knew you were pregnant?

IVF doesn't have to be a budget breaker

What is IVF? In a nutshell, IVF is when eggs are taken from the ovaries and are combined with sperm in a lab where fertilization takes place in a glass culture dish, or "in vitro," and are then placed back in the uterus.

While IVF may provide hope for infertile couples, that little bundle of joy will come with a high price tag. On average, one cycle of treatment costs $12,000 to $15,000, and you can expect to pay up to another $5,000 for medication. It regularly takes a few rounds before an IVF pregnancy is successful, so it's a big investment. What's more, you need to act quickly after an infertility diagnosis so your eggs are as young as possible. And that doesn't always allow for time to save for treatment costs.

So how can you cut costs financially without compromising your fertility care?

Work with your clinic

Some clinics may offer discounts on medications or on multiple cycles of treatment, and some may be more prepared to help you budget and work out costs in advance. Most initial fertility diagnostic testing can be done at an obstetrician's office and billed to insurance prior to seeking out a fertility clinic. At the same time, be ready to shop around and negotiate; some clinics may offer loan financing and self-pay rates, since clinics bill insurance companies at a much higher rate.

Look at your insurance policy

Your insurer may consider IVF a luxury rather than a necessity. In 15 states, however, insurers are obliged to pay for fertility treatment, but even the best policies may not necessarily cover all costs. While the World Health Organization and the National Infertility Association recognize infertility as a reproductive disease, not all organizations do. Ask your insurer if you're not sure and don't assume you're covered. Read your policy carefully and be prepared to argue your case. Typically, insurers won’t cover the cost of fertility treatments without evidence of multiple failed pregnancies. Additionally, if you are lucky enough to have your insurance cover fertility costs, coverage is typically capped anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000.

Use a flexible savings account or health savings account

If you have one, use a flexible spending account (FSA) or a health savings account (HSA). Most major corporations offer employees an FSA account, however anyone can setup an HSA regardless of what their employer offers. These accounts allow you to set aside pre-taxed dollars for specially designated purposes including medical expenses that insurance doesn't cover. Using these savings accounts can roughly save you up to 30 percent of the cost of IVF.

Tax breaks

IVF is considered a medical expense in the eyes of Uncle Sam. Depending on your income, it may be possible to offset this expense against your taxable income. Also, the cost of transportation to and from doctor’s offices or hospitals can be deducted. To write off your fertility expenses, you must exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income for that year.

No- or low-interest financing

If you know you need to borrow money to pay for IVF, be smart about how you are borrowing. If you are thinking of putting some of the procedure on a credit card, get a credit card that offers a 0 percent APR intro period. These periods usually last for up to a year and a half, giving you time to pay off the debt without being hit with interest. You can also rack up some serious cash back or airline miles. If you want to apply for a loan, look for lenders that offer the lowest interest rates. Many online loan sites offer lower interest rates because it is cheaper for them to operate online instead of having physical branches.

When nothing else works…

Asking family for help may be an option, as is crowdfunding, seeking treatment abroad for IVF and scholarships from non-profit organizations. Some programs may refund some costs if the treatment is not successful, but that could mean paying for several cycles upfront.

Always research your options, whether it be HSA, or using the cost of IVF on next year's tax return. There are many ways to make this very difficult and costly process a bit more affordable.

Budget-savvy tips to save a fortune on your grocery bill

Tired of watching my money disappear, I decided to make some changes. Now my weekly shop is a military-style operation that totals about half what I used to spend. It’s not hard — in fact, it’s made my life so much easier. If you're up for the challenge, take a look at my top money-saving tips.

1. Arm yourself with a plan and a list

Here’s a quick way to spend lots of money on stuff you don’t need: Go grocery shopping with vague notions about what you might like to eat later in the week. I guarantee you’ll walk out with far less of the useful kind of food and far too much of the "chocolate and ice cream" kind.

Before you even leave the house, work out a sensible meal plan and check your pantry and fridge so you don’t double up on items you already have. Then, write out your list.

Savvy solution: Apps like Paprika allow you to easily save all your recipes from websites. Then, you can add the items you need to a shopping list on your phone. Boom! Meal plan sorted!

 2. Go meat-free at least once a week

Hear me out! Going meat-free doesn’t mean you have to start eating tofu or bean curd instead. Sub out meat for cheaper vegetables, like pumpkin or potato in a curry instead of chicken, or lentils in a shepherd’s pie instead of mince. There are loads of recipes out there for delicious meet-free meals that will save you a pretty penny and won’t have you feeling like you’re missing out.

Savvy solution: This creamy potato curry is a great meat-free meal from a website called Forks Over Knives, where you’ll find a recipe to satisfy even the most devoted carnivore.

3. Have an end-of-week leftovers meal

The final night before your next grocery shop can be a catchall meal, where you use up all the leftovers in your fridge. My favorites are fried rice, curries and stir-fries because they are so versatile for using up veggies and only require other pantry staples to complete them, like coconut milk, rice or soy sauce.

Savvy solution: Be inventive! Here’s a good omelet recipe and a basic fried rice recipe to get you started. Just add your leftovers!

4. Have at least one ‘cheap’ meal a week

You don’t have to eat gourmet every night. At least once a week, plan for a super-cheap meal option like soup. When in season, a head of cauliflower will cost a couple of dollars, and the rest of the ingredients for cauliflower soup can usually be found in your pantry.

Savvy solution: Plan your meals to take advantage of seasonal produce (Sustainable Table has a helpful guide). Buying sweet potatoes for 99 cents instead of $2.99 a kilo makes a big difference to your weekly total!

5. Don’t buy packet snacks

Packaged snack foods cost an insane amount of money, and you’re paying for nasty ingredients. A much cheaper option is to make bulk batches of healthy muffins or your own muesli bars.

Savvy solution: Popcorn is a super simple and brilliantly cheap snack idea. My family chooses from these seasoning recipes to keep it interesting. Unpopped corn kernels are cheapest — and use a popcorn maker or just pop them on the stovetop.

6. Once your shopping is done, put your purse away

Buy everything on your list and don’t go back to the grocery store for the rest of the week. If you’ve forgotten something, find a substitute in your fridge or pantry. An extra trip to the store usually results in buying more than you need (like the aforementioned chocolate and ice cream).

The exception: The only things I bend on are bread and milk — because the kids can’t survive without toast and I can’t survive without my morning coffee.

There's a whole lot more you can do to cut back your grocery bill, but these top six are a good start. How much can you save on your grocery bill with just a few of these simple changes?

Jessa Duggar's midwife did exactly what she should have done

But now that she and husband Ben Seewald have opened up about what really went down when their little guy was born, it's clear that Jessa's home birth didn't go wrong. In fact, what happened is right in line with a 2014 study that declared, "Outcomes among women who had planned, midwife-led home births were 'excellent.'"

According to Jessa, their little boy arrived at 6:54 on Nov. 5, but soon after she experienced bleeding that worried her midwife. That was when her mom, Michelle Duggar, made the 911 call many have since heard, and Jessa was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where she was given a blood transfusion and kept overnight.

More: Jessa Duggar's baby needs one more thing before she'll share his name

Certainly not a mom's dream for her home birth. As she told People, "I had dreamed about those first moments, getting to breastfeed right away, all that. And so when I had to go to the hospital, it was a shock."

But consider this: Jessa is fine. So is the baby.

And that's because her midwife did exactly what she was supposed to do: She monitored the home birthing mom, and when something concerned her, she sent said mom to the hospital. According to the aforementioned study, some 11 percent of moms transfer from the home to a hospital during a home birth — be it because of complications or a decision to seek pain relief.

More: Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis break their own rules to share baby photo

That's OK. It's OK for a mom — or her midwife — to say, "You know what? We tried home birth, but we need a hospital." It's not a failure of home birth. If anything, it's proof that this option is viable for many moms because that backup of the hospital does exist. Provided there is access to a hospital and the midwife does her (or his) job correctly, that hospital option can actually end up enhancing the safety of home birth in much the way that a driver's ed teacher's brake makes things safer for a student driver. They're there to step in if needed... but they don't always need to do so.

Whether or not you're a Duggar fan, Jessa's situation is not unlike that of many moms in America. And if we really listen to what it is she's saying, we should take heart in knowing that even a complicated home birth can turn out just fine.

DIY festive holiday centerpiece filled with chocolate kisses

The more festive and creative we can get, the better! I often find myself putting themed items together when I decorate for Christmas. Sometimes the most unexpected things end up being perfect. This centerpiece is not only gorgeous and inviting, it captures attention and starts conversation. Best of all, it's edible!

DIY festive holiday centerpiece filled with chocolate kisses

Supplies:

  • Glass flower vase
  • Cake stand
  • Milk Chocolate HERSHEY’S KISSES in holiday colors (3 bags or more, depending on the size of your vase)
  • Various decorative picks (found at craft stores during the holiday season)
  • Christmas greenery

For my centerpiece, I picked out various red, green, and silver decorative picks, as seen below. These picks are designed to stick on a Christmas tree, on a wreath, and can even be used as a gift topper.

Directions:

  1. Separate the Milk Chocolate HERSHEY'S KISSES by color. In this case, the holiday bag has 3 colors: red, silver, and green. For this centerpiece, I only used red and silver.
  2. Place a layer of silver HERSHEY'S KISSES along the bottom and gently press them down to make sure that they are leveled. This prevents the layers from getting uneven.
  3. Next, place a layer of red HERSHEY'S KISSES on top.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you get to the top of your vase.
  5. Finally, gently stick the decorative picks in the vase just like you would with flowers. I put the taller picks toward the back and the smaller lollipop ones near the front.
  6. Place the finished vase on top of a cake stand.
  7. Wrap Christmas greenery (faux or real) around the bottom of the cake stand.

Everything stays in place so nicely with the layers of HERSHEY'S KISSES! A cake stand is a great way to create various levels in a centerpiece. I love when things are easy like that! In our house, I put coordinating Christmas decor just behind the centerpiece. Those silver and red gifts are about the same height of the centerpiece, but because the vase is sitting on top of the cake stand, your eye is automatically drawn to it. Greenery is an important feature for any centerpiece. It adds a different texture, breaks up the colors and fills space in a beautiful way.

You could place this centerpiece on a formal table or even by your front door (people love grabbing a sweet treat before leaving!). I think it would look fantastic in an office, a classroom or even on a desk at work.

Happy holidays!

There have been conflicting reports about what's been going on between Gunvalson and her ex, Brooks Ayers, and while she recently told Mario Lopez during an interview for Extra that she hates Ayers, a source claims otherwise.

"I hate him, I hate him with everything in me, and I don't hate people, but I believed him, I trusted him, I defended him, took a bullet for him when people didn't like him," she said during her interview. But according to E! News, a source told them Gunvalson is actually not over Ayers.

Um, what?

More: Vicki Gunvalson's reported new man is a huge mystery

She's "absolutely still in love with Brooks. She talks about missing him. She's dating other people here and there, but she's not over Brooks," the source claimed.

"They have texted a lot in the past few weeks, and they've spoken a couple of times," the source added.

Ayers has been taking a lot of heat over the legitimacy of his cancer claims (and was recently found faking documents), and Gunvalson reportedly feels awful about the way things have played out so publicly.

"I think she feels terrible about everything that's happened. If it weren't for her position in the spotlight, Brooks' character would never have been called into question so publicly," the insider told E! News. "When things were good with them, she was really happy and they had a lot of fun. She's sad that it's over."

Could Vicki Gunvalson and Brooks Ayers still be in contact despite the fact that she says she hates him? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
