Vanderpump Rules stars dish on Season 4 drama and new cast members (VIDEO)

As fans know all too well, Vanderpump Rules has never had any shortage of drama, but Madix says this season ups the ante. As the trailer hinted, viewers can expect to see some major ups and downs in various relationships, from a happy engagement between costar Tom Schwartz and longtime girlfriend Katie Maloney, to the apparent end of newlywed bliss between Scheana Shay and her husband, Michael Shay.

"There are some relationship issues between Scheana and [Michael] Shay; some issues with him personally," Madix said of the upcoming season. "Just different relationships and different friends are put to the test in a new way that people haven't seen before."

The Season 4 trailer revealed some of those personal issues, hinting that Michael suffers from an apparent substance abuse problem — something that took even Madix, a good friend of his, by surprise. It wasn't something that I ever thought was going on with him and I felt really horribly," she said. "I felt really horribly that he didn't feel comfortable talking about it and that he was kind of suffering through this alone."

But while Scheana and Michael may be facing some serious personal issues this season, they aren't the only ones who will run into problems. Sandoval says Season 4 also includes a particularly regretful moment for him. "I did one thing this season that I never, ever, ever thought I would do," he teased, although audiences will have to stay tuned to find out exactly what it is.

The new cast members, Lala Kent and Faith Stowers, are also doing their part to spice things up. "They're probably my favorite new additions that we've ever had," Sandoval said. "They came in and they were very just real, open book, 'This is who I am, I'm not trying to do anything; I'm not putting on a show.'"

As for what viewers should expect from the newbies, Madix describes Kent as "a very sensitive, warm soul" with a "tough exterior" and Stowers as "a badass bitch" with a military background — which sounds like it'll make an excellent match for the rest of the Vanderpump crowd.

In addition to Kent and Stowers' introduction, former costar Stassi Schroeder is set to make a return at some point this season, although Madix says that viewers will have to wait until later in the season to catch her appearance.

Between the breakups, makeups and new cast members, fans clearly have a jam-packed, drama-filled season to look forward to. Vanderpump Rules Season 4 kicks off on Bravo on Monday at 9 p.m. ET, with the brand-new after show, Vanderpump Rules: After Show Pre-Show, airing on Fridays at 9 p.m. ET.

Tamar Braxton's DWTS chances could be ruined by a health emergency

More: Bindi Irwin grants sick fan's Halloween wish (VIDEO)

The Dancing with the Stars contestant missed tonight’s live show after she was rushed to the hospital, reportedly threatening her chances of continuing in the competition.

TMZ reported Monday afternoon that Braxton was rushed to the emergency room during dress rehearsal for the show. Host Tom Bergeron confirmed that at the beginning of the show, but offered hope that Braxton might still make it back in time to perform.

"This is very much a live show," he said. "We don't have all the information right now. She might return in time to dance live here. We'll keep you posted as we find out more."

More: 7 Things Rumer Willis and Chris Soules actually have in common

Ultimately, however, Braxton didn’t make it back, meaning the judges had to score her based on taped footage from the dress rehearsal. Braxton and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, received a score of 22/30.

"You just saw a person that shouldn't have been here, and was here because she felt bad for her partner, teacher, you know? That's why I feel really bad, because it shouldn't be like that," a tearful Chmerkovskiy told the judges. "It should be a fun journey. I'm not here to make her life hard. We want to celebrate her effort."

TMZ reports that Braxton had been fighting pneumonia for two weeks and that her illness became so bad during the rehearsal, her husband rushed her to the hospital. She’s the second contestant this season to miss a live show due to illness; Kim Zolciak was forced to withdraw early in the season after she had a stroke and wasn’t cleared to travel in time to make it to the broadcast. Zolciak's withdrawal has fans wondering if the same will happen to Braxton.

Prior to tonight, Braxton was a favorite on the show. She tied with Bindi Irwin for second place last week with 28/30, just behind Nick Carter’s perfect score.

Our thoughts are with Braxton and we hope she gets well soon!

More: Pillsbury and chef Cat Cora team up to unveil ready-to-bake gluten-free dough

Cora and her wife, Jennifer, have been married for 17 years. They released a statement Monday about their decision to end their relationship.

"It is with great sadness, that after 17 years, a tremendous amount work, careful consideration and heavy hearts, my wife and I have mutually decided to no longer remain married," Cora told People magazine. "In love, there is a season, a reason and a lifetime."

Forty-eight-year-old Cora and 44-year-old Jennifer have four children together — Zoran, 11, Caje, 8, Nash, 6, and Thatcher, 6 — all sons they conceived via in vitro fertilization and carried by Cora and her wife.

"Although this is not what we ever imagined, we will always have four incredible reasons to celebrate our years together: our sons," Cora continued. "We are forever parents to our boys and are jointly committed to raising them in a peaceful, nurturing and healthy environment."

According to People, Cora, who was the first-ever female Iron Chef, revealed in a 2010 interview with the magazine the unconventional path she and her wife followed to motherhood.

"The doctor implanted Jennifer and me with each other's eggs," she said. "So she gave birth to Caje, but he's my biological child. I carried Nash, but he's Jennifer's biological child."

She continued, "As a same-sex couple, we had to go back and legally adopt them. Even though Nash was her biological son, Jennifer had to adopt him. Same with me and Caje."

Our thoughts are with Cora and her wife during this difficult time.

The Voice fans disapprove of Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton's on-air flirting

Now that Shelton and Stefani are a dynamic duo, nothing will be the same on The Voice. Stefani's rep recently spilled the beans on Shelton and Stefani's relationship, and ever since, fans have been waiting with bated breath for a new episode of The Voice to air. These fans initially hoped that they'd gain more insight into the new relationship while watching the season's very first live show. Suffice to say, the new couple delivered.

Although fans' interpretations of Shelton and Stefani's behavior are definitely colored by the recent news of their relationship, it's impossible to deny the chemistry between the two. Several fans acknowledged the flirtation that often took over on The Voice, highlighting the frequency with which Stefani giggled at Shelton's remarks — even those that weren't particularly humorous. Although a few fans thought the two were behaving in a very awkward manner, several others thought that the romance made an otherwise dull episode much more interesting. Highlighted below are a few of the many pro-Shelton and Stefani tweets that appeared while the two flirted on The Voice.

The annoyed Twitter users highlighted above evidently aren't the only people bothered by Shelton and Stefani's behavior. Not one to let go of his famed bromance, Adam Levine awkwardly imitated Stefani's giggling. Although he was clearly just razzing the couple, his brief moment of mimicry actually felt a bit mean-spirited.

From the disappearance of Shelton's wedding ring to his recent flirting with Stefani, his relationship developments have added a new layer of interest to Season 9. It will be fascinating to watch the romance unfold during future episodes — and to see how it impacts Shelton and Levine's bromance.

Emergency hospitalization

Shortly before Dancing with the Stars aired, news broke that Tamar Braxton had left rehearsal and had been admitted to hospital with pneumonia. The live show went on with the initial pairs' dances, with host Tom Bergeron admitting they had no idea how the situation would play out.

Tamar Absent

Tamar Absent

After all the DWTS couples had performed their first dances, Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough, and Alexa PenaVega and Mark Ballas sat at the top of the leaderboard, and the judges were forced to evaluate the rehearsal tape of Tamar Braxton and Val Chmerkovskiy's contemporary dance in her absence. As it was a rehearsal, there were some issues and they wound up with a score that left them at the bottom of the leaderboard. Fans began to wonder if Braxton would make it back from the hospital in time for the Showstopper Team Up Challenge or possibly be eliminated like Kim Zolciak was earlier in the season following her mini-stroke.

Showstopper Team Up Challenge

To kick off the Dancing with the Stars team dance round, Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson, and Alek Skarlatos and Lindsay Arnold teamed for a dance from the Queen musical, We Will Rock You. Their paso doble was entertaining and they really got into the spirit of it, but the judges found weaknesses.

Next up, Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough, and Alexa PenaVega and Mark Ballas performed a Charleston routine based on the musical Chicago that had the judges raving that it was right on the money.

Tamar Braxton arrived back from the hospital exhausted but ready to dance along with partner Val Chmerkovskiy and Nick Carter and Sharna Burgess for her team dance, which was a rumba based on the Beatles' Love show. Had Braxton not performed, she would have been eliminated as per the rules. The routine was beautiful and the judges expressed their respect for Braxton.

Braxton's last-minute return to Dancing with the Stars had fans of two minds about her reprieve. Some were thrilled at her perseverance and were relieved that she was able to stay in the competition regardless of her illness.

However, some fans thought that because Braxton was unable to perform her first routine, she should have been eliminated.

Leaderboard

After all the DWTS performances were complete and the scores were added together, Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough, and Alexa PenaVega and Mark Ballas were tied at the top of the scoreboard, each with two perfect scores for the night. Alek Skarlatos and Lindsay Arnold were on the bottom despite Tamar Braxton's lower scores for her rehearsal dance.

Elimination

Despite her two perfect scores, Alexa PenaVega learned that she and Mark Ballas were in jeopardy, along with her husband, Carlos PenaVega, and his partner, Witney Carson. One half of the married couple would be going home. Ultimately, it was Alexa PenaVega and Mark Ballas who were eliminated, which some fans found shocking, as it was widely expected that Alek Skarlatos, arguably the weakest dancer at this point, would reach the end of his run on Dancing with the Stars.

What is your opinion on the Tamar Braxton controversy? Which was your favorite Showstopper performance? Were you shocked by Alexa PenaVega's elimination?

Vanderpump Rules' fans shame Scheana & Katie for cruel behavior in season premiere

More: Vanderpump Rules: 7 Reasons why James and Kristen's relationship is a disaster

Tom, Ariana, James
Image: Bravo

If you're a longtime watcher of Vanderpump Rules, you might remember that when Scheana first arrived at SUR in Season 1, Stassi immediately had it out for her, because she was the new girl and also because she knew Scheana had slept with a married man and didn't trust her around her then-boyfriend Jax. She didn't make any effort to even pretend otherwise, and organized her girl gang, which was then composed of Kristen and Katie, to treat Scheana badly, hoping that she'd go back to Villa Blanca (or just drop off the face of the planet).

Now, three seasons later, there's another new girl at SUR, Lala, and ironically, it's Scheana, along with Katie, who have it out for her, to the dismay of fans, who also have their theories about why they're lashing out.

Regardless of the reasons for Katie and Scheana's behavior towards Lala, it's pretty hard to overlook certain ironies: Katie and Scheana hated each other until midway through Season 3, when Scheana finally made friendship overtures and apologies, and Katie finally severed her toxic relationship with Stassi. The most giant of all the ironies, though, is the fact that Scheana's disdain for Lala seems to be directly connected to her sexual behavior. If Stassi succeeded in doing anything during Season 1, it was to make sure that everyone within one hundred miles of SUR knew that Scheana had slept with Eddie Cibrian while he was married to Brandi Glanville, and sold the story to a tabloid. Scheana has never denied that she slept with Cibrian, although she has claimed she didn't know he was married until their relationship was pretty far along. The point is, fans are in firm agreement that Scheana, of all people, shouldn't be criticizing another woman's sexual decisions.

It's possible that Scheana's attempting to be the Stassi of this season, and/or that she's gotten extra smug about other people's relationships now that she's married (although it doesn't seem like that's going particularly well). Either way, it wasn't cool when Stassi did it to Scheana, and it's not cool now. Things didn't end awesomely for Stassi in terms of her friendships — she was essentially left with no one at the end of last season — and it would be a shame to see Scheana isolate herself in a similar way. There's still time to make sure that doesn't happen, Scheana. Think about it.

More: Ladies of London: The 8 most dramatic moments of Season 2

Juliet
Image: Bravo

The second season of Ladies of London was a mere 10 episodes long (although, that's four more than the first season), but by the end, there was so much drama that it couldn't be contained to a season finale episode. Caroline Stanbury pondered life after the Gift Library and threw a pool party. Annabelle and Julie continued to be on the outs, causing fans to wonder if their once-close friendship is even salvageable, and everyone was still surprised and confused by Annabelle's behavior on the Denmark visit and tried to figure out how to act around her. As the episode drew to a close, viewers were certain about one thing and that was their overwhelming desire to see these ladies be fabulous and dramatic for another season.

Annabelle and Julie's friendship began to unravel at the end of this season, starting with the trip to Denmark when Annabelle snapped at Julie for not joining the rest of the group on an adventure to the furrier. Viewers hoped they would be able to mend things, but at the end of the season finale, it didn't look good — and everyone was blaming Annabelle.

In other unresolved drama news, it's still not clear if Caroline Fleming and Marissa have really made up after the "cougar" incident and the 800 apologies that followed. Also, if there's any residual tension between Juliet and Marissa after Marissa decided to let the friendship cool off, it's hard to tell where it's left them. Additionally, there's the matter of Mapperton, Julie's husband's family estate, which is becoming increasingly more expensive to maintain. All of the proceeds from the projects Julie's been doing this season — including her yoga classes and her JUB snacks — have been put toward the goal of keeping Mapperton going, but will it be enough?

Season 2 also saw the introduction of Caroline Fleming, as well as Julie Montagu upgraded from "friend of cast" to a full-time cast member. In Season 3, viewers long to see Caroline Stanbury's makeup artist, Luke Henderson, as well as her sister-in-law, Sophie Stanbury, join the cast full-time.

How Supergirl is disappointing its feminist fans

$
0

Kara Zor-El's story was a chance for the entertainment industry to prove that shows about powerful women can succeed. Supergirl was supposed to be the perfect opportunity to showcase female strength, promote equality and illustrate that female lead characters don't have to be any different than male lead characters.

But instead of a superhero show that just happens to feature a woman instead of a man, we've been given a boring program that blatantly waves stereotypical feminist phrases in people's faces, simultaneously turning off both non-feminist and feminist viewers in one fell swoop.

More: Supergirl: Why Kara's horrible boss is actually the perfect ally

For example, we've already witnessed Alex stand up to her boss with lines like, "Why, because she's just a girl?" and Cat Grant's utterance of "He he he. Him him him. I am so sick of hearing about the man of steel. Every woman worth her salt knows that we have to work twice as hard as a man to be thought of as half as good."

In tonight's new episode, titled "Fight or Flight," the dialogue insults fans by rubbing their noses in hot-button phrases that echo contemporary movements like Ask Her More. Supergirl gets bent out of shape when Cat asks her if she "plans on starting a family" during an exclusive interview and quips back, "No one asks my cousin those questions." We're also given the gem, "She's not a consolation prize. She is every bit the hero he is; she just needs the chance to prove it."

More: 7 Times the Supergirl premiere set up Alex to be Kara's biggest enemy

It's not that these movements and phrases are not something to get behind; it just seems like the show is insulting fans' intelligence by spelling out the feminist theme instead of assuming they are smart enough to pick up on the female empowerment vibe.

And then there's the fact that there are the typical blatantly sexist themes sprinkled throughout the episode, as well — like when Cat wants all of the hostesses at her launch party dressed up in cute little Supergirl costumes.

We were also introduced to Reactron this week, a family-man-turned-monster who seeks revenge for Superman's transgressions. Yes, we have Aunt Astra as a female bad guy, so to speak, but why have all the weekly villains so far been gritty, scary men? Where are all the badass female convict villains? All of the escapees from Fort Rozz are from the same planet as Supergirl, so shouldn't there be more female aliens who have the same powers as Kara? If we're going for equal opportunity here, we need some girls for Supergirl to fight.

More: 8 Things to know about Melissa Benoist, TV's new Supergirl

Furthermore, this week, Supergirl is continually being saved by men. Superman saves the day and Supergirl's life in one maneuver, and why does Jimmy constantly feel the need to save Kara, even though she's straight up told him that she feels completely belittled by his help?

supergirl tweet 3

supergirl tweet 3

supergirl tweet 4

supergirl tweet 4

Perhaps the most annoyingly sexist scene this week was at the end of the show when we met Lucy Lane for the first time. Kara has morphed into Supergirl and says she's ready to take on the world, but her crush's gorgeous ex shows up at her day job and suddenly she's reduced to tears? Snore.

Not to mention, the preview for the upcoming episode makes it look like the plot is solely based on Kara's love life — or lack thereof.

supergirl tweet 1

supergirl tweet 1

supergirl tweet 2

supergirl tweet 2

Supergirl wants us to believe that it's empowering women, but it's starting to seem like it's just trying to capitalize on the feminist movement happening right now. Hey, Hollywood, if you really want to make a feminist TV show, write a script for a man and then change all of the pronouns from "he" to "she." It's not that hard.

3 Pumpkin desserts that will make you forget all about traditional pie

$

Each of these desserts has all of the traditional flavors of pumpkin pie (like cinnamon, pumpkin puree and cumin) with other delicious ingredients too, like Greek yogurt, cream cheese and chocolate chips. Plus, each bite size pumpkin treat requires no fork or plate. And for those who are always stuck on dish duty (like I am), this fact alone makes each one necessary this year.

pumpkin pie cupcakes
Image: Claire Gallam/SheKnows

Don't let the name of these fool you — they aren't your ordinary cupcakes. These mini cakes have the same ooey, gooey center as a slice of the famous pumpkin pie. The flour and sugar in the mix form a crust around the center so you get the same texture as a piece of pie. Plus, the top becomes concave while cooling, forming a perfect spot for a dollop of whipped topping.

Pumpkin pie cupcake recipe

Yields 12

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3/4 cup skim milk
  • Whipped topping and cinnamon for garnish

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line cupcake wrappers in a muffin pan and coat wrappers with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and pumpkin pie spice.
  3. In a larger bowl, combine pumpkin puree, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, almond and milk until fully combined. Add in dry ingredients and mix until no streaks of flour remain and batter is smooth. (Batter will be runny).
  4. Fill liners about 3/4 of the way full and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until cupcakes are brown. Once cooled, add a dollop of whipped topping into the concave center and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Injured while texting: It happens a lot more than you'd expect

$

That little incident was as humiliating as it was painful (and it really hurt!). But every time I tell that story, I'm surrounded by a chorus of "me toos!" Because let's face it: Texting (or playing games or reading on your phone) while walking isn't just for teens anymore. According to a new survey, nearly half of people confess to having a physical accident or injury due to improperly using their tech.

More: 7 Technology investments worth the money

"I tripped over a garbage can and got a massive bruise on my hip because I was too busy looking at something on my phone," says Lizzie B, who is part of the 43 percent of cellphone users who say they've walked into an object while looking at their phone. In fact, she was so prone to these types of mishaps that she says one of the last pieces of advice her dad gave her before he passed away was "Lizzie, look up."

"I think he meant figuratively, but actually it's pretty sound advice literally too! Now my phone stays in my bag when I walk around," she says.

In addition to walking into something, 13 percent of people have walked into another person, while 27 percent have fallen off a curb or into a glass door or window.

More: Cell phones may be the worst thing to happen to weddings

It's not just tripping while tech-ing that can get you into trouble, though. The study also found that 60 percent of people have dropped their phone on their face while using it lying down. "My phone slipped out of my hand while I was reading in bed one night," Angie S. confesses. "I ended up with a huge bruise, and it hurt for days! I wanted to lie and say I got it at a boxing class or something cool, but no, I'm just an idiot," she says with a laugh.

And that's not even counting all the many hours of sleep lost to checking "just one more" email or site.

But while bruises, scrapes and hurt egos are the most common injuries, occasionally they can be quite serious, as Deb R. demonstrates. "I was looking up at some interesting architectural details and trying to take a picture of them with my iPhone when I tripped over the uneven sidewalk and broke my hand," she says. "Six weeks in a splint, four weeks of therapy, and a hand still doesn't bend completely... all because of the beautiful 1920s architecture on an old theater." (Well, that and her phone.)

And who can forget the texting teen who fell into an open manhole while texting and walking in New York City? Not only did she get the scare of her life, but she lost her phone (and a shoe!) in the raw sewage.

"In our fast-moving world of smartphones and other gadgets and gizmos, we’re encouraging people to pay a little more attention to the potential risks around them so we can reduce avoidable accidents and get on with enjoying all the great things that modern life has to offer," said Russell Atkinson, CEO of the National Accident Helpline, which funded the study.

Atkinson added that he hopes we all learn from these painful mistakes, but if this stat is any indication, then we're all in big trouble: While only half of adults say they've had a tech-induced accident, nearly 90 percent of young adults aged 16 to 24 say they have. Time to stock up on Band-Aids and ice packs!

7 Tips for your most effective parent-teacher conference yet

$

0

I’ve been on both sides of these conferences, and the best approach for parents is to put aside all reservations and use the opportunity to establish a relationship with your child’s teacher.

Now that students are settled into the new school year, this is the perfect time to talk with your child’s teacher about his progress — and any potential challenges — and then work together to set goals for success for the year.

Research shows that partnering with teachers and engaging in your child’s learning improves her achievement and social skills.

Here’s how you can make the most of your parent-teacher conference so you can best support your child:

  1. Schedule your meeting — Typically, your child’s teacher will contact you when it’s time for parent-teacher conferences and give you dates when you can meet with her. This gives you time to prepare and schedule the meeting. If you need a translator, sign language interpreter or other help, you can plan for someone to attend the meeting with you.
  2. Talk with your child first — Before your meeting, talk to your child. Find out which subjects your child likes best, and which ones he doesn’t like — and why. Use National PTA’s Parents’ Guides to Student Success as a tool to help understand a clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade level. Sometimes, there is a concern your child doesn’t know how to express themselves, and you can talk to the teacher directly about it.
  3. Create a list of questions — These meetings can go by quickly. The teacher will have a prepared report, so you need to be prepared too. To have a productive two-way conversation, prepare a list of questions so you can leave the meeting with a comprehensive understanding of how your child is doing academically and socially in the classroom and how to address any issues. These questions should provide guidance and outline important talking points.
  4. Listen to the teacher’s perspective, then tell your side — Be open-minded and don’t judge your child’s teacher until you hear his side. A parent-teacher conference shouldn’t be the first time a teacher or parent should learn about a problem, but sometimes it is. It’s hard not to be defensive, but assess the situation before reacting and share any contributing factors, such as a parent divorce, death, bullying or medical issues so the teacher has a full perspective on any issues.
  5. Take notes — Don’t forget your notebook and pen! Jot down possible areas of improvement or positive feedback you want to monitor or talk about when you go back home to your child. It’s also handy if you have several teachers to visit, such as during middle or high school.
  6. Ask to see work samples and other important documents — Parents should ask to see samples of their child’s work and ask about any activities they can do at home with their child to support her learning. Go over any other documents like the syllabus and upcoming projects or events.
  7. Give your contact information — Parents and teachers should schedule a follow-up conference and decide on the best way to stay in touch for progress reports. Consistent communication (via email, phone, etc.) will help build the relationship and address issues immediately.

These tips will help you best support and advocate for your child. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing your child excel in school. Good luck!

1. They're not lovin' it

Today fast food workers are planning a nationwide strike in a bid to raise the minimum wage to $15/hour. Protests are planned in 270 cities around the country and tens of thousands of workers are planning to participate. They'll begin by protesting at restaurants starting at dawn and then move to city halls during the afternoon. It's the "Fight For $15" movement's largest protest so far. If you were planning on going out for lunch today, you might want to brown bag it instead. — USA Today

More: How eating a french fry changed my view of the minimum wage situation

2. Bye-bye

The president of the University of Missouri resigned yesterday amid protests against his inaction in the campus' racism problem. You'll recall a student was on a hunger strike and most of the football team was refusing to play this weekend after dozens of incidents, including someone drawing a swastika in feces on a residence hall wall. Things have been so bad, even the coach said he'd stand with his players, despite the fact that forfeiting this weekend's game could have cost the university $1 million. Ultimately, the president says he takes "full responsibility" for the inaction, and both he and the chancellor have stepped down. — CNN

3. Donald Trump: Christmas Crusader

Donald Trump — the Official Pot Stirrer of the presidential race — encouraged his supporters to boycott Starbucks over the whole red cup fiasco. At a rally in Springfield, Illinois, he said maybe we should consider boycotting and then promised, "If I become president, we're all going to say 'Merry Christmas' again." Sure, Don, whatever you say. If you'd like to see more obnoxious comments about Starbucks cups, you're in luck. There will probably be plenty at tonight's fourth GOP debate on Fox Business at 9 p.m. ET. — Washington Post

4. Cheater, cheater

Yesterday Russia was accused of having a national doping problem among its elite athletes. A commission set up by the World Anti-Doping Agency — yes, that's a real thing — reported a "deeply rooted culture of cheating" in Russian sports and recommended that Russian athletes sit out during the track and field events at next year's Olympics. They say officials have been bribed or blackmailed in past games and the government has destroyed drug tests. It's a huge mess. Russia has until the end of the week to address the allegations, but the commission says more damaging revelations are to come. — AP

5. Nice try

SeaWorld is making changes, sort of. They just announced their San Diego park will no longer focus on killer whale shows and will instead open a new informative Orca "experience" that will be held in a more natural environment. Translation: We're keeping the whales in captivity, but trying to make it look nicer. SeaWorld has been dogged by flagging attendance and tanking profits since the documentary Blackfish revealed the devastating effects captivity has on Orcas. This is a tiny step in the right direction, but more meaningful changes need to take place. — Los Angeles Times

6. Reusable bags at the ready

GameStop's 2015 Black Friday deals have leaked online, much to the delighted surprise of anyone whose kid asked Santa for a new PlayStation. The retailer will open at 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving and offer more than 319 deals, including $299 PlayStation 4 and Xbox One bundles. This is among the first Black Friday flyers to make it online, but surely won't be the last. Black Friday is a competitive sport in the U.S. and there are only 15 days left to prepare to battle your friends and neighbors for the last copy of Assassin's Creed Unity. — Game Spot

7. Here we go again

Another university is in hot water over racial tensions and a failure to address the issues. This time it's Yale, where hundreds of students have signed an open letter demanding resignations over an email telling students to "look away" if they don't like racially and culturally insensitive Halloween costumes. It's the latest in what detractors are calling the "campus PC wars" — debates over triggers and censorship and who gets a voice in campus affairs. At the University of Missouri it seems change is taking place after serious student action. We'll see if the same thing happens at Yale or if they'll continue to attempt to silence those who speak out. — The New York Times

I was married to a pedophile, became a single mom and still found love again

$

I realized women aren't morons — sociopaths are just incredible liars. A lot of people use the word sociopath freely when, quite frankly, they are just referring to assholes. I've come across many assholes in my life but only one true sociopath. Unfortunately, he was my husband. The man I built a life with for over a decade, had a 1-year-old baby girl with and thought I knew better than anyone in the world, I didn't know at all. On a normal day, finding out your husband was paying to have sex with transsexual prostitutes is the kind of news that could be very upsetting, but nothing could trump the child porn I found on his computer. I kicked my husband out of the house and became a single mom. I also secretly started working with the police to protect my baby girl and other children from men like my ex.

For the next few months, my life was filled with over-the-top, high stakes drama. My only salvation was watching preschool TV with my daughter; Nick Jr. became my new best friend. Slowly the fog started to clear a bit and I made the decision to start dating again. Somehow, I felt like if I was good enough to put on some lipstick and go on a date, my life wasn't completely broken.

I was finally starting to get my mojo back when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I made the decision to get a double mastectomy. I cried when the doctor informed me the whole process would take at least six months, culminating with my cherries on top. "I didn't know there would be these scars going across my breasts! I thought I'd be coming out with a boob job," I shrieked.

More: Woman's graphic photos show us a side of breast cancer you never see

"No, Lisa, after your breasts are removed, we just start the reconstructive surgery. I go in and put expanders where your breasts once were, that stretch out your skin. A few months later, we do the implant surgery. When that heals, I make nipples from your scar tissue, wait for them to heal, tattoo them and then we're done."

To which I replied, "I'm a single mom, my ex is a pedophile and I just started dating again!" I had finally gotten used to giving that disclosure and now I have to say I'm losing my breasts, too? Who's gonna want to date me?

My first few days in the hospital were a beautiful morphine-colored blur. By day four, I was a little more lucid. I looked down at where my breasts once were, and there were these two little baby anthills. In the middle of my anthills, there were lines going across. I started to see these lines as my war wounds, and they didn't look as bad as I expected.

I made the decision to not let little things like reconstructive breast surgery, not having nipples and having scars get in the way of my dating life. But I knew that I would have to give a disclosure before I took off my top so someone wouldn't be surprised. I made a habit of telling everyone on the first date that I was a single mom, my ex is a pedophile and I just had my breasts removed so I'm under reconstruction. My aunt thought I was crazy to disclose so much. I just knew I couldn't do dating small talk, and if it scared someone away, so be it.

For the next two years I went on over 50 first dates under reconstruction. I became a player in the most superficial city in the world and my line was "I have no nipples." The dating became my romantic comedy that helped me get through the tragic, dramatic, psychological thriller my life had become.

More: 5 Types of men single moms meet online

The first guy I slept with in my reconstructive state, when I told him about my situation, asked me if I had any nipples yet and I said no, "I'm just like Barbie." I showed him my breasts, we had great sex and were involved for four months. He said to me, "You know what's so sexy about you? It's how comfortable you are in your body."

He was right. I felt sexier and more comfortable in my body than I had ever been! Look, I don't have nipples, you think a little cellulite is gonna bring me down? There was something so unexpectedly liberating about not having nipples. It's like any ideal of perfection I could have ever hoped for, went out the window with my breasts.

"Hi, I'm Lisa. I'm a single mom, my ex is a pedophile and I don't have nipples yet. I'm under reconstruction. Nice to meet you." This was also the line I used when I met my current husband. I am now cancer-free and got married this year to the amazing man I met on my nipple-less dating spree. He is a wonderful husband and father to my daughter.

I once heard someone say, "Life isn't about surviving the storm, it's about learning how to dance in the rain." I'm happier and more content in my life than I've ever been. And so much of what I've learned over the last few years wasn't in spite of the storm, but because of it. And I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Lisa's final show, "Dating in L.A. With No Nipples," is this Wednesday and all proceeds benefit StandUp2Cancer.

11 Merrier things to do instead of shopping on Black Friday

$

No worries — we've got you covered. We’ve put together a list of 11 things to do on Black Friday instead of shopping. We’ll see you on Cyber Monday, when the sane people shop online in their underpants.

Once the turkey is digested and the dishes dried, you are officially free to deck the halls with boughs of whatever puts the jingle in your bells. Ho, ho, hold the tinsel. Then, fling it strategically. You’ve got a full day to get your Griswold on — so no excuses.

  1. First, sleep in — you’ve earned it. You survived another "fun-filled" family event. Your reward? A big cuppa java and a slab of leftover pumpkin pie buried under a mountain of full-fat whipped cream, for the win.
  2. With breakfast covered, it's time to drag the Christmas decorations out of the attic. Take the opportunity to peruse the scene. That box of clothes you saved because you just might fit into them again? The bin full of hideous knickknacks you shoved in the corner five years ago? Let it go, let it go. You’ll feel so much lighter — it will be almost as good as losing the weight. Almost.
  3. After dragging and decluttering, take a little “me time.” Stop asking Photoshop to tend to your personal grooming. Soak! Scrape! Clip! Paint! Wax! Pluck! Exfoliate! Just do it — you’ll look and feel so much better.
  4. Lunchtime! Overwhelmed by the dizzying array of leftovers? Feeling guilty about abandoning your diet? Grab your juicer, stuff it all in there, drown it in gravy and whip up a hearty glass of Thanksgiving. Brown juice is the new green juice. No, seriously. Shut up, arteries — nobody likes kale.
  5. You can’t decorate until you clean the scene. Sure, cobwebs are festive with a little glitter spray, but the rest needs to go. Strap some Swiffer pads around your slippers, slip on some dusting mitts, crank up the Christmas tunes and bust a move.
  6. You exercised! Go you! Time for that second slice of leftover pie. Don’t forget the whipped cream — your thighs will thank you later.
  7. So many activities! So much pie! The day is still young, so don’t stop now. Get a head start on your holiday cards. Dig up the box you bought last year and never mailed. Stamp ‘em, stack ‘em and send ‘em on their way.
  8. You’ve put it off as long as possible, but it’s time to put the lights on the tree. It’s a string of lights followed by a string of juicy expletives on repeat until you reach the final branch. Whee. Complete this frustrating task and you get a mug full of eggnog, hold the egg.
  9. Now comes the fun part: adding the decorations. Pile ‘em on! The more the merrier. It’s Christmas, that magical time of the year when tacky is tasteful and glitter is a condiment. Self-restraint should be avoided at all costs. When in doubt, add more sparkle. Bedazzle every inch of the house with gleeful abandon.

Congratulations! No elbows in the rib cage, no fighting over bargain bin blowouts and no baby-buggy-battered shins. You are the Holiday Master and those other suckers are missing out on all of the fun. Pour yourself another mug of nog, dish up that last slice of pie, plug in the tree and exhale. Cheers, darling, Happy Holidaze.

An exhausted Democrat reviews the fourth GOP debate

$

Last night's debate on Fox News, with moderators from the Wall Street Journal and the Fox Business Network, was focused on the economy. I knew going in I wasn't going to understand a whole lot of what they're talking about — it's all numbers and taxes and rates and spending and maybe, if we're lucky, why they sell wedding clothes for ferrets at Petco. But I didn't hold my breath.

Here's what I saw:

After the last debate, the candidates had fits over the way the moderators and CNBC handled it. For this debate, they demanded changes like equal time for all candidates, fairer questions, 90-second responses and 60-second rebuttals, and no filming the candidates leaving their podiums to go to bathroom breaks because holy f***ing shit what the hell are these people talking about. The Fox Business Network decided to handle this by giving their moderators chemical lobotomies and a little bell they could ring for no reason at all because everyone ignored it.

More: The third Republican debated re-enacted by a liberal Democrat

Success!

The candidates started by talking about raising the minimum wage which they all think is a terrible idea. Trump says it's because we're losers who need to stop losing, Carson thinks people don't really understand the minimum wage (although, if you understand what the words "minimum" and "wage" mean, you're more than halfway there), and Marco Rubio thinks more people should look into welding because apparently, those guys are taking baths in money.

By the way, did you know that John Kasich's grandfather was a miner who had black lung and one eye? That was part of his answer about how he would balance the budget, and it was the most fascinating piece of information I heard all night.

The moderators asked Ben Carson about the recent questions that have been raised about his past, namely that he said he was offered a full scholarship to West Point when really, not so much, and that he stabbed a guy once which, also, may not be the case. His response was that Obama and Clinton are liars, too, and it's not fair that his lies are getting all the attention. I'm not sure that, "Well, yeah, but what about that guy," is the best answer, but I also believe in evolution, so what do I know?

They talked more about immigration and Trump got to talk about his wall again, but what I appreciated was that they discussed his nonstarter of a plan to kick out 11 million illegal immigrants. Kasich and Bush pointed out that not only is it impossible, but it's heartless and stupid as well. Trump considered their input and said, "We have no choice." So, there's that.

And what about Ted Cruz? Ted Cruz is still that guy you dated once who was super confident even though he worked at the last Blockbuster Video in the state and lived in his parents' basement. He knows he's smart, even if no one else does. He likes to think of himself as compassionate so he tells dramatic stories using "caring face" and "soft voice," and you know he wants to hug you but you really don't feel comfortable with that because you're pretty sure he'll end up trying to kiss you and the thought of that makes you want to curl up in a ball with a shard of broken glass for safety.

More: A Republican's reaction to the first GOP debate: My party is doomed

Cruz, by the way, also stated that he wanted to abolish five government agencies, which he listed as: "The IRS, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Energy, the Department of Commerce and HUD." This is bad news for the Department of Commerce, which Cruz obviously plans to abolish extra hard.

Carly Fiorina still hates to read (she wants everything to be no more than three pages long) and got the crowd riled up by saying again and again that, "we need to take our government back," making her the first person to try to lead a revolution while also requesting extra towels for her room at the Four Seasons.

Marco Rubio and Rand Paul also attended.

From there it just went on and on. Everybody wants us to have a big military so that we can — I don't know — be the president of our fraternity and f*** the homecoming queen. It's a big deal to them that the world knows that America has an enormous penis and will throw it down on any table we please. I stopped listening after that. I did a couple of The New York Times crossword puzzles (I like the Monday ones because they're easy), and petted my dog. I did snap to attention again during closing statements when Ben Carson started listing all of the people who have died during the course of the debate, because I was worried that he was going to say my name next. Luckily, however, I made it.

More: Ask a Raging Feminist: What answers does Hillary Clinton owe women?

Saturday night we get the Democrats again for their second debate, and I am really looking forward to it. Lincoln Chafee gets to talk more nonsense, Jim Webb might confess to another murder, and who knows what Bernie Sanders is going to yell about. It's going to be a good time.

Oh my God, I am so tired.

6 Serum foundations for an effortless 'no makeup' look

Serum foundations got their start with the launch of Giorgio Armani’s much-raved-about Maestro, so we asked the brand’s Celebrity Face Designer Tim Quinn to weigh in on what they are and why you need one in your life.

It’s all about texture

So what’s so great about serum foundation? According to Quinn, serum formulas combine a high concentration of skin care ingredients with a sheer to medium coverage that’s easy to build. Many formulas also contain SPF, for added anti-aging protection.

But the first thing you’ll notice is the texture. Typically, serums offer the luxurious slip of an oil but without a greasy feel. But don’t let the oil comparison scare you. “Serum foundations are great for most complexions unless you’re extremely oily or very dry,” says Quinn. So don’t skip your daily moisturizer or mattifier.

More: How to make your own serum foundation for cheaper

How to apply

Their trademark silky texture means they blend easily into skin for a smooth, flawless look. One caveat: Dry patches can be emphasized with serum formulas, so you’ll want to hydrate and exfoliate as needed. Also, many brands use dropper bottles, which can take a little practice to master sans mess.

Quinn advises applying the way you would a skin care product: Dab it on with your fingertips, starting at the center of your face and blend outward. The warmth of your hands will help the product glide on even easier. For a sheerer, “no makeup” look, mix the formula with a spritz of mineral water or dot of moisturizer in your palm before applying and focus only on the areas you need coverage.

Serum foundations to try

Every bottle contains a dose of YSL’s ultra-hydrating Forever Youth Liberator Serum. Other highlights: SPF 20, generous-yet-buildable coverage and a luxe texture. (Yslbeautyus.com, $69)

2. e.l.f. Foundation Serum

This budget-friendly take on the trend features a light, silky formula and broad spectrum SPF 25. The drawback: It only comes in three shades. Although the sheer coverage allows for a little more versatility, those at the fairest and darker ends of the spectrum won’t find a match. (Eyeslipsface.com, $8)

3. Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup

The original serum foundation. With its luxe, super-velvety formula and beautiful coverage, it’s easy to see why so many makeup artists and beauty experts have been smitten. It racks up bonus points for essential oils like white lotus, which Quinn asserts is “very calming to the skin.” (Giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com, $64)

4. Diorskin Nude Air Serum

As its name suggests, this formula delivers lighter coverage for a natural look that lets skin show through. But that doesn’t mean flaws get extra leeway — special pigments diffuse light for a radiant, soft-focus look. Other goodies include vitamins, minerals, “hyper-oxygenated oil” which is purported to let skin breathe and broad spectrum SPF 25. (Dior.com, $53)

5. By Terry Densiliss Foundation

Part imperfection-erasing foundation, part anti-wrinkle serum, a few expertly blended dabs impart matte coverage with a hint of radiance. The effect is like your skin — as seen through a forgiving Instagram filter. (Space.NK.apothecary, $115)
