We shouldn't need an #EndMommyWars video to be decent to one another

I'll admit that I'm easily suckered by clever advertising. A Publix commercial or a Cheerios spot easily does me in, and my heartstrings are easily tugged. That's why when I saw the new Similac spot, which features seven women talking tearfully about the judgments and struggles they face each day, I was instantly reaching for the tissues. It's a sweet little film, for sure:

#EndMommyWars Video

#EndMommyWars Video

Video: Similac US/YouTube

Once I splashed a little cold water on my face and got a hold of myself, though, one thought occurred to me before all others: a strong sense of gratitude to the benevolent Browser Gods up on Mount Gigabyte that I didn't have a whole lot of Internet access when I was both pregnant with and subsequently struggling to parent my infant daughter. Because good God, does it look like an awful experience. Moms everywhere who can afford Wi-Fi while you gestate, you have my complete and utter sympathy. Hang in there.

More: There's a (mommy) war being waged against C-section moms (VIDEO)

There are a lot of downsides to being a pregnant, unmarried college sophomore, and one huge upside: No money for an Internet connection means no access to what is frankly an awful and unceasing hellscape of judgment and garbage, people.

See, it's not that people didn't judge me. I'm sure they did, and there was lots of fodder: my tattoos, my piercings, my naked ring finger. Once in a blue moon, someone would actually approach me and comment on one of those things (usually my clear and apparent unmarried sluttitude), and that sucked. In a grocery store, a woman once asked me, without preamble, "Are you even married?" I joked, "No, but the father is," (not true) which shut her up quick.

It hurt my feelings, sure, but I had the benefit of perspective. Between my lecture classes, my two jobs and living in a busy tourist town, I easily interacted with hundreds of people a day, however briefly. So if one weird old lady with an unclear understanding of how boundaries work had something nasty to say, well, that was one person. I was being judged by one person, not "everyone."

More: Clever mommy wars parody goes viral (VIDEO)

Not true on the Internet. There, where parents are interacting on baby boards and Facebook groups and parenting blogs, that could be the bulk of the folks they talk to that day. And if they don't like what you're doing with your nipples or your vagina or your whatever, then yeah, that can feel like everyone is judging you. Something else that makes it feel like everyone is judging you? When you spend all your time judging other people and just assume everyone is following suit.

I think what struck me the most about this video was that it opened with every single woman admitting the nasty things they thought about other women before they themselves got a heavy dose of reality. And OK, judging people is normal — we're evolved to do it — and if you don't have a keen sense of judgment, you'd make an excellent patsy. You meet someone; you make a judgment. You can't help it. You know what you can help, though?

Being a dick.

The thing about empathy is that it's really empathy only if it isn't selective. You shouldn't need someone to sob out their heart-wrenching story about multiple miscarriages before you allow them permission to feed their baby any way they want to. You shouldn't have to hear about someone's struggle to keep their premature twins alive before you wave your empathy wand around and say, "Oh, yeah. I mean, I guess that's OK." And you shouldn't have to have something crappy happen to you before you can entertain the idea that crappy things regularly happen to other people. And then there's the possibility that people just do things differently than you and maybe mind your own business sometimes.

More: The Mamafesto: The 'Mommy Wars' flame on, burning everyone in its path

This is Sesame Street shit here, folks.

Nowadays, we all parent in this weird vacuum where you can find a million reasons in handy listicle form to judge the crap out of someone for co-sleeping/not co-sleeping/breastfeeding/bottlefeeding/whatever and never have to consider that maybe parenting isn't universal, until you find that — gasp! — parenting isn't universal. Then, suddenly, it's all tears and viral pleas to take it easy on one another.

No. Just start there.

I'm not hating on the video. It's lovely, and I'll probably watch it a few more times or ambush a more emotional friend with it when I know she has a big meeting later. All I'm saying is, judge not with opinions formed in gross echo chamber baby boards, lest ye be judged with opinions formed in gross echo chamber baby boards.

Khloé Kardashian has enough of the insults & rude comments over her divorce

Everyone and no one was surprised after Kardashian called off her divorce from Odom last week. Being that she completely put her life on hold and hasn't left his side since he overdosed at a Nevada brothel, it didn't take a rocket scientist to see that she's still in love with him. However, when it was made public that she had her attorney appear before a judge to have their divorce proceedings withdrawn, the world (read: Twitter) acted as if it was announced that Kardashian was pregnant with Odom's child.

More: Kris Jenner posts moving tribute to "fighter" Lamar Odom (PHOTO)

Understandably, Kardashian has had just about enough of the comments, blog posts and remarks that are more or less calling her an idiot for getting back with Odom, who, let's be real here, hasn't exactly been an exemplary partner. But Kardashian stands by the fact that she knows what she's doing, thankyouverymuch, and she's sick of everyone telling her otherwise.

More: Khloé Kardashian left in terrible position by one prenup holdover

According to TMZ, Kardashian is getting seriously annoyed with people who are calling her naïve for dropping the divorce, since she's more familiar with Odom's battle with drugs than anyone. She reportedly wants to be there to help him, and supposedly, if Odom so much as thinks about drugs again, she's going to continue with the divorce proceedings.

In other words, she's got this.

More: Lamar Odom speaks out about the Khloé Kardashian "ambush"

However, despite the fact that Kardashian seems to be confident in her decision, seeing some of the rude comments has to sting. Here are some not-so-nice tweets directed at Kardashian and Odom:

I could go on, but you get the picture, right? Imagine having to deal with this when someone you love almost died, and all you want to do is help him. It's so sad, and must be so hard for Kardashian right now.

Of course, I would be lying if I said that I thought that Kardashian was 100 percent making the right decision right now. This is an incredibly fragile time, fraught with emotion. Who knows if Kardashian — and Odom — are completely in the right mindset to make the best decisions for themselves? But who are we to judge? Yes, the Kardashians' lives are open books, there for us to devour, but this is an exceptional situation and fact is, we're not the ones in the hospital room with Kardashian and Odom. If they get back together and it doesn't work out, what do people have to gain by writing such hurtful things? The right to say, "I told you so"? Is that really worth it?

Bottom line: What Kardashian is doing right now is admirable. She's helping someone out in their time of need. Wouldn't we all do that? Perhaps her decision to call off her divorce is a bit rash, but at the end of the day, she's a grown woman and she shouldn't have to defend her decisions.

When do we set our clocks back this year?

$
0
0

Planning types typically set their clocks back an hour before going to bed, while the rest of us procrastinators do it when we finally crawl out of bed after lolling in our PJs for an extra hour. But have you ever wondered exactly when the time changes? The exact moment you get additional snooze time?

More: Why is it so hard to make friends as an adult?

It turns out the official "time change" comes at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, when clocks revert to 1 a.m., local standard time. That's the hour Congress designated back in 1966 as part of the Uniform Time Act, a public law establishing Daylight Saving Time. At the time, DST was set to end on the last Sunday in October, but as of 2007, it begins on the second Sunday in March and lasts to the first Sunday in November, thereby giving little trick-or-treaters a little more light for their Halloween antics.

More: Photographer's startling images show what cellphones are really doing to us

Of course, if you live in American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Arizona or Hawaii, you're out of luck this weekend. None of those locations observe Daylight Saving Time (with the exception of the Navajo Nation in Arizona).

What time do you actually change your clocks?

Man discovers he's not the father of his baby — his unborn twin is

$

If you're confused, don't worry, you're not alone. The sort-of parents, who have chosen to remain anonymous despite the fact that they're an awesome medical anomaly, went to a fertility clinic back in June 2014 for help to conceive a child. Not long after, the wife became pregnant and gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby boy. However, upon having regular blood work done, the parents noticed something odd: Their son didn't match their blood types.

MoreCourt rules baby from turkey baster pregnancy has a right to 2 parents

So the father took an at-home paternity test and received even more troubling results — he appeared to not be the father of his son. Naturally the parents were confused and upset. They thought the clinic had somehow used the wrong sperm during insemination. So they decided to get a more precise paternity test to make sure they weren't blowing a false negative out of proportion. However, sure enough, the second test came back with the same results — the man's DNA did not match his son's.

Needless to say, there were probably a lot of accusations thrown back and forth between the mother and "father" before the couple returned to the clinic, demanding absolution. The clinic assured them there was no way the sperm came from a different donor, because the "father" was the only Caucasian man to give sperm the day his wife was inseminated, and their baby looks Caucasian.

Stumped by this news, the couple consulted a geneticist at Stanford University named Barry Starr. According to BuzzFeed News, he suggested they get a genetic ancestry test. This came back with the most shocking results yet — the father was actually his son's uncle. While this sounds like the catalyst to a big, melodramatic reveal — that the mother was actually sleeping with her husband's brother — the truth is much more interesting. The father is his own twin.

MoreAmazing photos celebrate conjoined twins' successful separation

What this means is, he shared a womb with a twin, but that twin did not fully develop, and as a result, he absorbed his twin's DNA. This incredibly rare phenomenon is called a chimera and is believed to happen every 1 in 8 single births, but that's just an estimate, because it's not often recorded. It can happen to both men and women, and it means that while you may have conceived a child, they won't follow your genetic makeup. Freaky, right?

This is the first case of a father failing a paternity test because he's a chimera. However, he's definitely not the first chimera to ever be reported. Another interesting chimera case surfaced back in 2002 when Karen Keegan needed a kidney transplant and learned that her children were not compatible with her blood type.

While chimeras are totally possible, their occurrence does not mean you shouldn't fly off the handle if you learn you're not the father of your child. It's much more likely that there's something your wife's not telling you than that you're actually your own twin.

'Jacques Pépin: Heart & Soul is in the Kitchen' explores the connection between food and family

Now, with his 25th cookbook, Jacques Pépin: Heart & Soul in the Kitchen, and accompanying PBS television series, I finally got the chance to talk to this award-winning master chef. His latest project is a true labor of love that provides a narrative of his life through food, family, friends and his own artwork.

SheKnows: I hear that you’re retiring from television and cookbooks! Why now?

Jacques Pépin: Well, I may not stop entirely. I mentioned that I wouldn’t be doing another big cookbook like Heart and Soul and an accompanying television show with 26 episodes again. The book took about three years. Hopefully, I’ll do a smaller project, like something with my granddaughter where I give her lessons on cooking or something. But hopefully, I’ll slow down a bit.

SK: Heart and Soul seems like it’s just as much the story of your life as it is a cookbook. Was that intentional?

JP: It was an intentional decision. I did a book called The Apprentice [his autobiography], and this is a bit of an extension of this. I’ve done so many books and television series focused on food, like entertaining or making fast food. With Heart and Soul, I just wanted to reminisce. That’s why we have stories about my friends, what I cook with my daughter and granddaughter, what I cook at home or for my wife. There’s all kinds of things in this cookbook, so it’s a bit all over the place: from Puerto Rican inspired dishes (his wife Gloria is of Puerto Rican and Cuban decent) to Mexican, or Chinese or Japanese. Basically, I had no limits here with this cookbook. This is what I like to cook at home. I like all the books that I’ve done, but here there was a lot more family involved: my best friend Jean Claude Szurdak, my daughter Claudine, my granddaughter Shorey and my wife Gloria. So in that sense, it was closer to me.

SK: Heart and Soul definitely comes off that way. It seems much more special and comforting to read.

JP: Thank you! That’s the reason I put a lot of my artwork and illustrated menus in it because it shows different parts of my life.

SK: Speaking of that, there is a lot of your artwork in this cookbook. Tell me a little bit about what sort of place art has in your life.

JP: When you open the book, there are two menus. After 50 years of marriage, we have seven or eight big books of hand written and illustrated menus. We got into the habit after we got married, when people came to our house, we wrote the menu out and we’d have our guests sign the opposite page. Sometimes, I’d illustrate them, sometimes I didn’t. It’s a journey through our life. It’s very personal, so we wanted to put some of that into the book.

SK: What has it been like to have both your daughter, Claudine, and your granddaughter, Shorey, on your new show? You’ve got three generations of your family on the show!

JP: I just watched the third show in the series, and I’m cooking with Claudine. Shorey was in an episode before that for this series. It’s fun certainly. Again, it makes it more personal. They wanted to come on the show. The only one who doesn’t want to cook on TV with me is my wife, Gloria. She’s extremely private. She hates being on television.

SK: What are your plans now that you’re retiring from television?

JP: I still teach at Boston University, where I’ve been for 33 years. I’m still teaching at the French Culinary Institute. I’m the culinary director for Oceana Cruises. And I’ll still do a lot of food and wine events. I’ll still be really busy.

SK: You’ve mentioned before that some “celebrity chefs” can spend too much time on the “celebrity,” and not enough on the cooking. Who are some of your favorite well known chefs that you’re a fan of right now?

JP: Oh my gosh, there’s so many! Thomas Keller is probably the best chef in America. There’s Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Daniel Boulud. And there’s a group of us PBS chefs who are still teaching people like Lidia Bastianich, Ming Tsai and Rick Bayless. They’re great cooks and great teachers.

SK: Do you think part of being a good “celebrity chef” is about teaching and mentoring, as well?

JP: Well, it depends on your own style and character. I’m not an actor. I can’t be different than I am. Some people find my shows boring, and that’s fine with me. You can’t please everybody. Some chefs get crazy or overly fancy with their array of food, which I’m not particularly interested in. And confrontation in the kitchen isn’t my thing. I feel there’s a great deal of yourself and who you are when you’re cooking. So, the yelling is not condusive to my cooking. I know it’s television and people want that kind of entertainment. But it’s not really my style.

SK: When you’re relaxing at home with no obligations, what is your ideal meal? Would you cook or would someone else be doing the cooking?

JP: Usually I cook at home, or my wife. If she’s cooking in the kitchen and I come in, she usually tells me not to touch anything! But otherwise, what we cook is determined by the season, by the garden, by the market and by our mood. Sometimes, you’re in the mood for a soup or a stew because it’s cold. Sometimes, you want a fresh tomato out of the garden just with a bit of olive oil on top. Sometimes, you have a hangover and you want something else. But usually, it’ll be food I can recognize that is relatively simply cooked without too much embellishment on the plate.

SK: Is there anything you’d like to tell your fans who have followed your career?

JP: Well, my goal is to bring a smile to the face of someone. I hope they’re happy with what I’ve done, or follow one of my recipes and make it their own. That is gratifying for me.

Jacques Pépin's latest cookbook, Jacques Pépin: Heart & Soul in the Kitchen, is available in bookstores now. The accompanying television series of the same name airs on PBS. Check your local listings.

Bacon, ham and sausage cause cancer, according to WHO — cue the crying

$
0
0

This is horrible news for those of us who adore things like bacon, ham and sausage (in fact, what did you have for breakfast today?). Also to blame? Hot dogs, beef jerky, corned beef and canned meat. But the IARC holds firm on the findings of a Working Group consisting of 22 experts from 10 countries, which are as follows:

  • Processed meat has been classified as carcinogenic to humans. This means the agency has found sufficient evidence to state that its consumption causes colorectal cancer.
  • There was also a positive association between processed meat and stomach cancer.
  • The experts state that each 50-gram portion of processed meat eaten each day constitutes up to an 18 percent increase in risk of colorectal cancer.
  • Red meat (unprocessed) is probably carcinogenic. This means there is limited evidence that red meat causes colorectal cancer.
  • There was also an association noted between red meat and pancreatic and prostate cancers.
  • The overall risk of developing colorectal cancer due to consumption of processed meat remains small, but the more you consume, the greater the risk is.

This report has unsurprisingly been met with horror as well as skepticism. As experimental data for this study was scarce or absent (which would require years of humans eating a controlled diet, while also controlling for other variables), the experts in this situation had to rely on existing data, more than 800 epidemiological studies and observational studies of human diets and the outcomes of those who consumed them.

MoreSubway finally gives in to demand and will ditch antibiotics in all meat

As with most sweeping statements of this sort, which can seem like nothing more than scare tactics, you must keep in mind that if you consume too much of anything (including water), you will find it's not good for you — and can possibly kill you. It must also be noted that this panel of experts did not asses the nutrients found in meat that may possibly offset the small increased risk of certain types of cancers.

That said, it's really not a bad idea to eat these types of foods in moderation. The typical American diet is definitely meat-laden, which is delicious, but it's been long known that pairing meat with more fresh fruits and vegetables can go a long way toward better health and better outcomes, especially when it's coupled with plenty of exercise.

Start with a white base coat. This makes the colors stand out more than on a clean nail. You can apply some lotion or Vaseline to your fingertips for easier cleanup afterward. Just make sure not to get lotion on your nail.

2. Drop and swirl

Add a drop of black polish to the water. Don't drop it in from too much of a distance because it will fall fast and sink to the bottom. Add a drop of the gray and then the white, alternating as much as you wish. Working quickly before it dries, take a toothpick and draw some swirls to make a pattern.

3. Dip

Website encourages men to not look at their wife's face during sex

$
0
0

A Christian website that encourages men and women to live by biblical gender roles is also encouraging men not to look at their wives when they submit to sex with a less than excited attitude but that women, regardless, ought to be having sex anyway. See below:

Every time you have sex and are not genuinely feeling sexual pleasure from your husband and it is not for the two reasons I mentioned above – you should fake it!

Is he insane? He basically advocates for faking it unless you are in physical pain or he is hurting you. Even more, he says that men should ignore their woman's face while they are having sex so that he can have his pleasure without the major downer of not seeing her as happy as she could be.

More: Couples are apparently paying for nude wedding night photos

Wow. What a generous dude. If that's biblical marriage, let's please forget it.

I have been married 12 years (together for almost 15) and I have never faked "it" in any way. For better or worse. Sure, I have been less into having sex some nights and I have certainly said yes when I would have just as soon gone to sleep. But then my husband, because we love each other, has worked to get me in the mood. He teases and cajoles and helps me get to where I feel pleasure rather than just lie there.

I do the same with him.

Sorry, men, if you are turning your head away from your wife and just jack rabbiting her while ignoring her face, then you are bad in bed. And there is a reason your wife isn't looking at you. News flash: Sexual pleasure isn't just for men. Crazy, I realize. If my husband weren't into sex, I wouldn't jump on him and make him do it anyway. I would try to get him in the mood. I would flash him and do the things he likes in order to get him there.

7 Brooks Ayers accusations that are beyond disgusting

Vicki Gunvalson's daughter Briana Wolfsmith-Culberson appeared on the show — or as Andy Cohen sometimes calls her, the Voice of Reason — and she made a seriously disturbing accusation about her mother's ex-boyfriend. Apparently, Ayers hit on her. When she was pregnant. At a party where her mother also was. Hashtag: Disgusting.

More: RHOC's Vicki Gunvalson and Meghan Edmonds "go at each other's" throats

Of course, as disturbing as this news is, it doesn't exactly come as the shock of the century to anyone. Ayers, after all, has a seriously checkered past. From the news that he offered to show Culberson his penis ("They call me Girth Brooks." Barf!) to his insanely hard-to-follow cancer diagnosis, here are seven accusations about Ayers that make him seem like a fantastically awful person. Dear God, let's hope these all aren't true.

1. He told Culberson's husband to hit her

vicki gunvalson
Image: Oh No They Didn't

A few seasons ago, during a RHOC reunion, Culberson revealed that Ayers told her husband Ryan that he should hit her. "You told my husband to start hitting me and you’re not sorry for that?" Culberson said to Ayers. "F*** you! It’s on recording! It’s on a recording! I heard your voice. You told my husband, 'You need to start hitting Briana to get her to fall in line!'" Doesn't get much more revolting than that, now does it?

2. His cancer diagnosis is seriously shady

tamra
Image: Bravo

We obviously can't have a Things Brooks Ayers Have Been Accused Of list and not include his cancer, or "cancer," diagnosis. In addition to saying approximately nothing that adds up about his supposed disease, it recently came to light that he A) refused to take a lie detector test, and B) works at a medical facility that would totally have the resources to fake a PET scan report.

3. He cheated on Gunvalson

vicki gunvalson
Image: WiffleGif

Last year, in a weird sting-caught-on-tape operation, Ayers admit to being unfaithful to Gunvalson. "I've been known to cheat," Ayers said. He admitted that he was intimate with a prostitute in Las Vegas, whom he paid $300 to $400. Nice boyfriend.

4. He used violence with Gunvalson after a drunken night out

vicki gunvalson
Image: Giphy

In that same video, Ayers admitted to grabbing Gunvalson one night after having too many drinks. He claims that a guy grabbed her butt, and, for whatever reason, he decided to take it out on her. He claims that that was the only incident, though. Oh. OK. It's cool then.

5. His financial history is spotty

shannon beador
Image: Giphy

Many — including Culberson — accused Ayers of using Gunvalson for her money. He did, after all, move into her swank Orange County pad, remember? And, when you hear about Ayers' financial past, it's kind of hard not to think that way. At one point, it was revealed that he owed about $10,000 to his ex-wife in child support and $5,000 to $12,000 to the IRS. What a stand-up guy.

6. He was in jail

vicki
Image: Bravo

Ayers' financial history is actually so spotty that he was arrested and jailed in 2010 for failing to pay both his ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend child support payments.

7. He'll do anything for a buck

vicki gunvalson
Image: Giphy

According to sources, Ayers has been plotting and scheming ways to make money off of his breakup with Gunvalson for months. After his "tell-all" interview with Andy Cohen — where he was paid $10,000 — Ayers supposedly has been looking to get paid to date someone since he split from Gunvalson. An insider claims that Ayers is shopping around first-time photos of himself with a new woman to various magazines, waiting to see who will pay the most. Gross.

My guess? This is one guy who won't be getting a spinoff show anytime soon. Or, you know, hopefully ever.

What do you think of Ayers?

Mother creates child safety app after daughter killed by online predator

They had been chatting for 18 months before they finally decided to meet up. But Brandon wasn't a floppy-haired teenager — he was a middle-aged, balding paedophile named Gary Francis Newman, who lured Carly to the beach, attacked her, suffocated her in the sand, then dumped her body in the water.

Newman has since been given a 29-year sentence without parole for killing the young teenage girl, but Carly's mother, Sonya Ryan, wants to make sure that other children who chat to people online don't find themselves in the same dangerous situation.

Following the horrific loss of her daughter, Sonya created an app called THREAD, which is hoped will help children and young adults find safety if they end up in risky situations after meeting people online.

More: Is Facebook safe? Safety tips for teens

Child Safety App
Image: The Thread App

It uses GPS tracking to allow users to check in their location and to communicate to friends or family that they are okay. If they find themselves in a dangerous situation, they can click on the "Alert" button, which automatically calls 000 and sends out their location details.

After downloading and going through the THREAD child safety app, it got me thinking about the time I met someone in an online chat room and whether or not I would have used such an app. I too was around 15 years old; it was the late '90s. We'd met on Pirch, one of those ancient online chat rooms that my two best friends and I would log in to in secret after school.

"asl?" a message popped up in a new window. "Age, sex, location?"

"16/f/qld," my 15-year-old self lied. "U?"

"17/m/qld."

My friends and I giggled at the thought of chatting to a real-life teenage boy as one of our mums made us dinner from the kitchen down the hall.

After weeks of chatting at the same time after school in the same chat room, my friends and I decided to ask "17/m/qld" for his phone number. After a couple of months of talking — both online and on the phone — we ended up meeting in person. My two friends came for moral support and to make sure he was who he said he was: a 17-year-old, poetry-writing bass player. And thankfully he was. But what would I have done if he wasn't?

More: 5 Reasons your kids should have cellphones

Looking through the THREAD safety app, which is incredibly easy to use and simple in its design, I wonder if I would have used it as a 15-year-old, hormonal, boy-crazy teenager. If that technology was available then, yes, absolutely.

Even then I knew what I was doing could go horribly wrong, but I did it anyway, with just the support of my two 15-year-old girlfriends. If you have teenage, girl- or boy-crazy children, it might be worth shoving these apps under their noses, because, as Carly's mum Sonya would no doubt tell you, it could save their life.

Other child safety apps

  • Help Me: Daniel Morcombe's family have created an app to assist both children and adults who find themselves in dangerous situations with the Help Me safety app.
  • Guardian: Parents can have more control of what access their children have to the Internet through the child safety app Guardian. It monitors and restricts a child's access to calls and sms, allowing parents to restrict the child's use.
  • Australian Police Child ID App: An app which has been developed to help Australian parents provide information to police to help find their children should they go missing.

15 Ways to reduce your heating bill this winter

$

0

There is good news. You can really cut down on heating bills by making a few minor changes, and if you're up for it, there are some big changes you can make that can really keep your home warm and your pocketbook full.

1. Lower your thermostat. This is one of the oldest, most tried-and-true methods for keeping your heating bills from skyrocketing. Keeping your thermostat on around 68 degrees (or colder if you can stand it) should be your goal.

More: 22 Reading nooks that will make you want to curl up with a book

2. Lower your thermostat even more. If you're going to be gone for the day, bump it down another 10 degrees or so. This can really help you save on that heating bill — from five to 15 percent annually.

3. Keep windows covered at night. Make sure you close blinds, curtains and other window coverings overnight, as well as when you're gone for the day. This can help keep that precious, precious heat from escaping.

4. Upgrade your window coverings. Thermal curtains or shades can boost your efforts, as less heat will go bye-bye and will stay inside where you need it most.

More: 10 Reasons your house will never look like a home goods catalog

5. Grab a draft stopper. If you can feel cold air coming in underneath a door, get a draft blocker to keep that pesky wind outside where it belongs.

6. If you are using your fireplace, turn down your heater.

7. And when you're not using your fireplace, close the damper to prevent cold air from seeping in.

8. Caulk, seal and weather strip leaky windows. These leaks can let cold air in, making your furnace work harder — which means less money in your pocket.

9. Cover your windows with plastic, because that can help seal out drafts.

10. Install an energy-efficient pet door. Ordinary pet doors are a major source of drafts in homes, but there are modern models that work really well as they keep the cold air outside.

11. Have your air ducts looked over by a professional. Sometimes, the duct system can develop leaks as well, sending your money out into the thin, winter air, and insulating the ducts themselves can really improve your home's energy efficiency.

12. Install new energy-efficient windows. This isn't free nor easy, but the savings can be well worth the investment.

More: 10 Big organization ideas for your tiny home

13. Seal your attic. If your home is prone to drafty rooms, uneven temperatures or dust, this project may be for you — or a qualified contractor.

14. Install an air duct damper. Air duct dampers allow you to control which rooms are heated — the perfect solution when you don't need to heat the whole house.

15. Install a Wi-Fi-enabled, programmable thermostat. Smart thermostats can actually learn what works best for your home, and can be set and changed remotely via your smartphone or tablet.

And if all else fails, when you're trying to stay warm this winter, wear an extra sweater, keep socks or slippers on your feet. You'll love the extra savings.

Why you should steer clear of the workplace rumor mill

“I hear you work with Glenda."

“Yes, first week on the job.”

“Well, good luck. We hope what happened to the last two people won’t happen to you.”

“What?” you ask.

“She runs everyone off,” they begin, ending their story 20 minutes later with “watch your back.”

If you’ve started a new job, you’ve probably experienced the gossip gauntlet. Before you even learn the ropes of your new job, one or two individuals pull you aside and give you the scoop on your new co-workers and supervisor.

Do you listen? Of course. You don’t want to miss information that may help you avoid future pitfalls.

The real question: What do you do with what you hear?

If you're able to file what you learn into a mental space, "I'm not sure what to make of this," you pass through your initiation unscathed. If, however, you listen and even slightly buy into what you hear, you often pay a high price for cheap information.

Hallway Deep Throats generally possess a hidden agenda. Perhaps they didn’t get along well with your new co-workers or boss and don’t want you to. Maybe they simply like to hear, believe and pass on the worst about others. Whatever the case, substantial distorted misinformation masquerades as a valuable heads-up. Thus, new employees with little or no history with their co-workers and supervisor may adopt a ready-made negative history before they have the chance to form their own views.

You may feel and even be open-minded enough to “hear the dirt” without buying it. Are you? Or will some small flavor of what you hear take root in your mind — particularly if presented by someone who appears and speaks with conviction? Before you know it, you’re wondering if what you’re hearing is true and if you’ll regret landing the right job in the wrong organization.

Try as you might to set what you’ve been told aside, when you next interact with “Glenda,” you find yourself looking for clues that confirm the problems you’ve heard about. With your collusion, you’ve contaminated your future work relationship.

What can you do?

Realize that listening, while it appears to cost you nothing, costs a lot. One-sided hallway gossip leaves a residue. Don’t be an accessory to reputation murder. Those who trash your new co-worker or supervisor have their personal axes to grind. When you enter a new organization, create your reality based on what you hear, see and feel.

Turn pumpkin pie into a sweet pizza for a fun twist on a holiday classic

This pizza gets its start from a super-huge cookie crust and then all the fixings of a pumpkin pie.

To get started, heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Then form the cookie dough over a medium-size (12-inch) pizza pan, leaving about 1/4 inch of empty space from the top edge (to allow room for the dough to rise slightly).

As the dough warms up from your hand, it becomes much easier to form it into the shape of pizza crust.

For the pizza "sauce," cooked pumpkin pie filling is used. Once the filling has cooled, gently spread it over the cookie crust, leaving about a 1/2 inch of space from the edge of the crust (so it resembles pizza crust).

  • 1 cup pecan pieces
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

Directions:

  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees F.

  3. Let bake for 16 to 20 minutes or until it turns a golden color.
  4. Let cool for about 30 minutes.
  5. While the cookie crust is cooling, add the pie dough circles to the oven, and let bake until they turn a light golden color (about 15 to 20 minutes). Let cool.

  8. Top with chopped white chocolate chips for the "cheese."
  9. To the pie shell circles, top with Cool Whip topping, and sprinkle cinnamon on top for the "pepperoni." Add the pepperoni to the pizza.
  10. Add the candied pecans (sausage) on top of the pizza.
  11. Top with pumpkin spice morsels and chocolate chips.
  12. Just before serving, cut the pizza into serving sizes with a pizza cutter.

Weaning your baby: Introducing solid foods into your baby's diet

$
0
0

Where to start

Start with one "meal" a day, and pick a time when your baby will be alert and willing. A tired baby is likely to be less responsive to trying new things. By 1 year old, your baby should be enjoying three small meals a day, along with some healthy snacks. Keep offering your baby's usual milk, but gradually reduce the amount as you increase the number of meals. It is advisable to give the baby their meal first to avoid filling up on the milk and refusing the food.

Important note: Do not introduce protein, cow's milk (in food only), gluten-containing foods (bread, pasta, cereal, etc.) and allergenic foods such as eggs, fish and shellfish before 6 months. The nearer you can get to this age, the easier weaning will be.

If you're thinking about starting before 6 months, talk to your health adviser first. Department of Health advice is that exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of a baby's life is best. However, it is recognized among the medical and health professions that some babies might need to start weaning sooner.

Waking up in the night is not necessarily because your baby is hungry. It could indicate a growth spurt, and so at 4 months, it should not be confused with the need to wean, however tempting it may be. Taking a real interest in what they are eating, chewing on their fist or toys and fussing or not seeming satisfied with milk feeds can all be signs of readiness to move on to solids. The most important consideration is that your baby must be able to sit up and hold their head unaided.

More7 Things your paediatric nutritionist wants you to know about your baby's diet

For 4- to 5-month-old babies

First solid foods: Powdered baby rice or cooked and sieved potato is good to start off with. Although it's bland, it helps your baby to practice swallowing, and mixing it with your baby's usual milk provides a familiar taste. This initial practice will allow your baby to get used to the action of the tongue. Having been used to pushing the tongue forward for sucking, your baby must now learn to push it back to swallow the thicker food.

Potato, butternut squash, apple, pear, carrot, parsnip, banana and sweet potato are ideal first baby foods, as well as non-gluten grains like rice, polenta, millet, sago and tapioca.

Move on to mild green vegetables (broccoli, zucchini, cauliflower), avocado, papaya, plums, apricots and red lentils.

Baby meal ideas at this stage:

  • Root vegetable medley (carrot, parsnip and sweet potato mixed with boiled water or breast/formula milk)
  • Fruit/vegetable combinations, such as sweet potato and apple or butternut squash and pear
  • Butternut squash and cooked red lentils
  • Fruit and millet (or other non-gluten grain)
  • Broccoli, cauliflower and potato bake

MoreSkip the store with these 3 no-cook baby food recipes

For 6- to 9-month-old babies

Consistency: Mash rather than puree (with the exception of harder foods like meat). Babies should also be able to handle finger foods alongside a meal. These can include soft ripe fruits, cooked vegetables and toast fingers.

Weaning your baby - uk.sheknows.com

Progress to stronger-tasting vegetables, like peppers, cabbage, green beans and leeks, and to fruits such as mango and peach. Include grains, such as pasta and oats, and add dairy products, like yogourt and cheese (milk in cooking only), as well as protein in the form of meat (chicken is best to start off with, as it's softer and blander). Introduce allergenic foods such as eggs and fish separately, and wait two to three days between each to check for any potential reaction.

Baby meal ideas at this stage:

  • Carrot and red pepper risotto with chicken
  • Leek and potato with fromage frais
  • Zucchini and potato cheesy bake
  • Pasta bake
  • Fruit puree with yogourt or ricotta cheese

For 9- to 12-month-old babies

By this age, babies should be able to chew reasonably well with their hard gums, so mincing or chopping food is adequate. You can move on to offering raw fruit and vegetables alongside a meal. Note: Don't add salt and sugar to their food.

Weaning your baby - uk.sheknows.com
Image: Lars Plougmann/Flickr

Move on to include red meat, citrus fruits and a small amount of dried apricots, raisins or figs. Warning: Round fruits, like grapes or tomatoes, represent a choking hazard and should be cut in half.

Baby meal ideas at this stage:

  • Lamb, lentil and vegetable stew
  • Mediterranean vegetables with quinoa
  • Chicken and mushroom casserole
  • Poached apple with homemade custard
  • Chopped, poached summer fruits with yogourt or fromage frais

More: Homemade baby food

Should I give organic baby food?

Concerns about pesticides in fruit and vegetables and antibiotics in meat mean that many choose organic produce. Nutritionally speaking, there is no evidence that organic food is healthier for you. Regardless of what you choose, you should always wash the fruit and vegetables thoroughly before peeling.

Remember that babies need a lot of calories, so use full-fat dairy in cooking, and provide a variety of vegetables, protein and carbohydrates with every meal. This is a wonderful stage of your baby's life and the start of their becoming a real part of your family. Enjoy mealtimes together, and your baby will learn from your example, growing to enjoy a varied and healthy diet.
