This is how much men know about birth control (VIDEO)

$
0
0

However, if we can agree that the guys in this video represent men in general, then the vast majority of them know very, very little. This is quite disappointing, because female birth control affects men (well, at least heterosexual men) just as much as it does women, even if they're not the one directly dealing with it.

MoreHormonal birth control might not be your best choice

Women are taught to be super attentive to their reproductive health from an early age, because a lot happens to our bodies during puberty. Sure, stuff happens to guys too, but nothing that suddenly makes them able to grow a baby in their belly. As such, when teenage girls start to become sexually active, they're keen to study up on all the ways they can prevent pregnancy.

At the beginning of this video by BuzzFeed, the woman on the street flat out says she doesn't think the guys she'll interview will know much about birth control (at least hormonal birth control). Sadly she is correct, but the joke of it stops being funny after about 30 seconds when you realize only 1 in 5 guys knows you need a prescription to get birth control.

Guys birth control

Guys birth control

Kind of scary, right? It's not like when a girl politely asks which teams are playing the Superbowl this year, then giggles awkwardly. This lack of knowledge on guys' parts is shameful, and guys who are reading this and didn't know the answers to most of these questions, you should be embarrassed. What it says is you're fine to leave all this up to the ladies you sleep with, because if they get pregnant, it's not your problem. If you actually saw reproductive health as your problem too, perhaps we wouldn't be losing Planned Parenthoods left and right.

MoreWomen weigh in on the problem with male birth control

Worst part of this video — none of these guys knows what an IUD is! OK, one of them did, but that's just frightening considering that IUD usage has increased by 83 percent in the last decade alone. It was also surprising to hear how few of them would consider having something similar implanted, especially since one of them was wearing a large metal earlobe expander. That's just hypocritical, dude.

However, there was one redeeming moment at the end when all the guys interviewed said they'd definitely try male birth control once it became available. So they at least have sympathy for women who spend a large chunk of their lives manipulating their hormones to have protected sex. That said, one guy did say, "As long as there's no crazy side effects." Guys. There are plenty of possible crazy side effects, but we use it anyway, because we accept the risks along with the benefits. That's what you do for love. Or one really great night of sexual escapades.

So men, go crack open those old sex ed books from high school, and get learning, because once you jump into bed with someone, you're in this reproductive game together.

4 Bill Cosby TV appearances that made everyone uncomfortable (VIDEO)

But the embattled comedian is making headlines again after a video resurfaced showing him awkwardly interviewing Sofía Vergara on The Late Show in 2003.

According to The Huffington Post, Cosby was filling in for regular host David Letterman at the time. To say his interview with Vergara, the first interview she ever did on American TV, is uncomfortable would be a major understatement.

Bill Cosby creepy interviews 1

Bill Cosby creepy interviews 1

Cosby starts the interview by inappropriately commenting on Vergara’s dress. He then sits next to her, leans in, and says, “S-I-N is sin.” Vergara looks at him uncomfortably as he continues, “Men look at you, and they only think of sin... Now, what you have on tonight is wonderful. This is wonderful. And when you walked out, many, uh, many people became attentive.”

Throughout the exchange, Vergara tries to laugh off Cosby’s remarks. But we can’t shrug off our own discomfort, especially when he adds, “You make me feel young again. You make me feel very, um, excited. Look at me.”

The newly rediscovered Vergara interview isn’t the only time Cosby’s made a TV appearance that was less than comfortable. Here are three others.

1. Cosby intimidates an Associated Press reporter

Since sexual assault allegations started piling up against Cosby last year, reporters looked to the comedian for an explanation. The way Cosby bullies this AP reporter into editing out his remarks about the scandal is very uncomfortable.

2. Cosby jokes about Spanish fly

In a 1991 interview with Larry King, Cosby jokes about Spanish fly, a dangerous illegal substance used historically as an aphrodisiac.

“Spanish Fly was the thing that all boys from age 11 on up to death — we will still be searching for Spanish fly,” Cosby says.

He goes on to explain that all it takes is a single drop in a woman’s drink to make her “yours.” Yikes.

3. Cosby’s “special barbecue sauce”

Of course, since allegations against Cosby became national news, people have created video roundups of the comedian’s creepiest lines and moments on his sitcom The Cosby Show. But none beats the scene in which he talks about his “special barbecue sauce” and its effect on those who eat it.

How hospitals treat wealthy patients differently

$

Shoa L. Clarke noticed something odd when he was working in a California hospital as a medical student. One older gentleman had a red blanket covering him, even though most patients he saw had the standard white bedding. While at first he didn't think much of it, later he overheard two doctors referring to the man as a "red blanket patient."

MoreThe new mammogram guidelines don't make our lives any easier

This concerned him, especially when he began treating these so called "red blanket patients" himself. This particular hospital used red blankets to distinguish wealthy patients from everyone else. Many other hospitals use similar indicators, but all share the same purpose: to separate out the rich. And while doctors, Clarke included, continue to claim they uphold the medical ethic of treating all patients equally, he notices a decided difference.

These patients are given red blankets by patient services for many reasons, but all have to do with their having an elevated status. They could be celebrities, related to hospital board members or have simply made it known they have money. Regardless of where their money comes from, they're willing to pay big to be extra comfortable when they have to be in a hospital, and hospitals are taking notice.

Many hospitals are undergoing extensive (and expensive) makeovers so that they'll appeal more to this elite clientele, many of whom are often willing to spend upward of $1,000 a night on a hospital room. As such, many hospitals create wings that look more like five-star hotels than medical centers that are supposed to treat all patients equally.

The point of these VIP services is to get more money for the hospital as a whole. Medical professionals call it "trickle-down health care," because it implies a big donation from one wealthy patient will help the rest by improving the overall quality of the facility. However, all this special treatment can't not result in an unfair dividing line between regular and red blanket patients.

And yes, it changes who gets treated first in an emergency room. The ethical standard of ERs is to treat patients in order of case severity and then by when they came in. However, one survey of 32 ERs found that most doctors will in fact treat an elite patient first as long as the other patients are "well enough." How's that for ethics?

MoreWoman donates her kidney to a stranger after seeing Facebook plea

The interesting thing about this prioritizing of the elite is that it doesn't always work in their favor. While Clarke cites several studies that show patients do better in more upscale surroundings, he also says that elite patients sometimes fare worse because the doctors coddle them more. I have some personal experience with this. A family friend who broke her hip a few weeks ago ended up spending two extra weeks in hospital because she's terrified of pain. She's quite well off, and no doubt her family used their monetary power to convince the doctors to wean her off pain meds at an incredibly slow rate. This means her recovery time will be that much longer, because the hospital wanted to assuage her.

So in the end, even if hospitals may benefit from this red blanket patient care long term, is it really serving anyone that much? The answer is no, but that doesn't mean it won't continue as long as hospitals have to deal with budget cuts and competition.

We could count for days the reasons why we love this gender-neutral, androgynous, goddess of a human being, but she pretty much summed up why we're so smitten after her hosting gig on the MTV Europe Music Awards this week.

And her opening sentence won us over straight away. We knew then and there that Ruby Rose was going to do us proud. And she did. What were her words? They were simple. All she said, while addressing the crowd for the first time, was: "Ladies and gentleman, and everyone in-between." Simple but powerful gender-inclusive language that has caused people to show their appreciation all the world over.

How yoga helped me grieve and begin healing after losing a child

$

When my son Norbert was stillborn, I avoided yoga because I associated it with him and his life. It also scared me to be alone with myself, as if the feelings would be too much and swallow me up. When I became pregnant with my daughter, I never thought of practicing prenatal yoga with her. My mind wandered to a very dark place — what if it was the yoga that killed my son?

Yoga and trauma

When we experience a traumatic event, our bodies lose a sense of safety and relaxation, living in a state of hyper-arousal and survival mode. We are constantly on alert and the anxiety can be overwhelming. We disconnect from our bodies and find it nearly impossible to be present in our lives.

After my loss, I discovered a really powerful book called Overcoming Trauma Through Yoga, which helped me come to terms with my grief and made me realize how vital yoga could be in my recovery process. Authors David Emerson and Elizabeth Hopper tell us that "our sense of ourselves is anchored in a vital connection with our bodies." After this type of experience, our grief and trauma can become stored in our physical bodies.

That said, "People who are traumatized need to have physical and sensory experiences to unlock their bodies... tolerate their sensations, befriend their inner experiences and cultivate new action patterns."

Yoga after loss

It took a few years for me to dip my toe into those waters again. When I was ready to take my healing into my own hands, I started attending yoga classes and was willing to risk being alone with myself. Through the yoga poses and the meditation, I again felt a familiar sensation of calm and grounding that I used to have when practicing. I felt that I had finally found a tool that bridged the gap between the “new” me and the “old” me.

Yoga provides you with an opportunity to help you retreat from the world, connect with and find compassion for yourself. The movement, either through prana (breath work) or asana (poses), helps to move the grief and trauma stored in our bodies.

When I first started the Return to Zero Center for Healing, I knew that I wanted to incorporate the teachings of yoga into retreats and workshops that could help women through the grieving process. Through our Yoga After Loss classes, we are now helping parents become empowered and present, while developing a sense of connection to themselves. While, the road to recovery was not easy for me or the women I have met along this journey, I have found that yoga has played a vital role in helping us heal emotionally, physically and spiritually.

In defense of bacon: It's not the dangerous villain you think it is

That is, researchers from a World Health Organization working group called the International Agency for Research on Cancer put cured meat in the same cancer-causing category as cigarettes — it's a "definite" cause of cancer. Bacon was classified as carcinogenic because eating it and other cured meats raises your risk of colorectal and stomach cancers. And red meat, according to the working group, is a "probable" cause of cancer.

More: Bacon, ham and sausage could cause cancer — cue the crying

Naturally the meat industry is all over this story, trying to defend its products. But meat producers aren't the only ones protesting, and neither are bacon lovers. Would you believe at least one cancer prevention organization is defending bacon?

Cancer Research UK's Science blog points out that the IARC's report has been distorted by news outlets. It's not that eating bacon puts you just as much at risk for cancer as smoking does or that bacon causes as much cancer as smoking. It's that the researchers are as confident that bacon causes cancer as they are that smoking causes cancer. It's a subtle but key difference.

On the other hand, the risk of getting cancer from smoking is much, much higher than it is from eating bacon.

More: The key to a long life is bacon, according to world's oldest woman

How high is that sausage-cancer risk? Joshua A. Hirsch of Vocativ points out that the average person's risk of getting colorectal cancer is 5 percent. He then says that when the IARC says eating 50 grams of cured meat raises your risk of that cancer by 18 percent, it means you're raising that 5 percent risk by 18 percent, so it's now at 6 percent.

So keep calm, and keep eating bacon. But not too much. Personally I would rather eat high-quality bacon less often than cheap bacon all the time. For me that means bacon from hogs not raised with growth hormones, antibiotics and other junky feed additives — preferably pasture-raised.

More: VIDEO: Cook bacon like a pro

We already know it's not healthy to eat large amounts of bacon all the time for several reasons, not just because of the cancer risk. But saying it's as unhealthy as smoking cigarettes is ridiculous. Maybe save your bacon-eating for the weekend, but if anyone scolds you for ordering it at brunch, you now have science at your defense.

6 Shopping tips for saving money while building a grocery stockpile

$
0
0

It seemed like a solid plan, until I ran out of storage nooks and crannies — and started to consider slipcovering a pile of paper-towel rolls to use as a chair. Also, it turns out that sale items still cost money. I needed a better strategy.

If you’re new to creating a grocery stockpile, or if your couponing has gotten a bit out of hand, never fear. My “stockpiling 101” tips are here to save the day — and your budget.

1. Know when to stock up

Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean you should clear the shelf. There’s a big difference between a good deal and a stock-up price. For most items, the magical stock-up number is 70 percent off retail price. Other items that are hard to find on sale, like Tide detergent, jam, almond butter and syrup, should be stocked when they’re 50 percent off. Pair these stock-up prices with coupons, and you got yourself a smoking-hot deal!

If you need a little more help knowing when to buy things, and how many to get, The Krazy Coupon Lady Stock Up Price Sheet is a great guide.

2. Get creative with your storage

Don’t worry, I abandoned the “stockpile as furniture” idea a long time ago. There are ways to creatively make the most of your space.

  • Don’t assume that everything has to be stored in your pantry, linen closet or laundry room. Utilize your attic, basement, garage, the back of doors (hanging shoe organizers make great storage tools), under your bed and other unconventional spaces.
  • Remove bulky packaging when possible. Some products are packaged like Russian nesting dolls — a bag, inside a box, inside another box, inside a... you get the idea. If you can remove some of that without compromising the storage life of the product, you’ll gain a bit of extra space.

3. Only buy what you can use

If you buy something for an incredible price, but you never use it, is it still a good deal? Be realistic about your product usage, and only buy the types and quantities that you will actually consume.

4. Rotate your stock

If your product has an expiration date, make sure you organize it so you can easily access and rotate it when needed. Out of sight, out of mind is a real thing, and it’s a bummer when you realize you’ve missed a window to use something. Putting the products that expire the soonest at the front is just one way to save on spoilage.

5. Freeze perishables

My kids always know when I got a good deal on a fresh item, because it suddenly becomes the star of our menu for the week, i.e. corn on the cob with creamed corn, cornbread, corn cakes, corn salad, corn chowder and corn salsa on corn chips — and that’s just for dinner. There’s no need to panic about fresh items, because you can stockpile them too. Simply freeze the excess and use them over time. (Tip: To freeze fresh veggies, simply blanch them, submerge them in ice water, and then freeze them in airtight containers or freezer bags with as much air removed as possible.)

6. Know sale cycles

We all know fruits and vegetables have a season, but did you know packaged goods do too? For example, it’s best to buy baking goods like chocolate chips and nuts in November and December when they’re on sale for the holidays. Learn the stock-up seasons — we’ve broken them down for you here — and you can save a bundle while filling your pantry.

Follow these six tips, and you’ll be well stocked — and well on your way to being an expert saver. For more tips and tricks, and to see the best prices and deals, visit TheKrazyCouponLady.com.

Why coffee and tea tours make exciting travel destinations

Most of us look forward to that first cup of coffee or tea of the day. Besides plain water, they are our most popular beverages. Coffee and tea drinks are delicious, nutritious and give us an energy boost.

Are you a coffee aficionado? Can you identify the differences between arabica and robusta? Do you grind roasted coffee beans at home? Are you the first among your friends to try a new brand or blend?

Or is your kitchen perfumed with the scent of loose tea leaves and with teapot and strainers at the ready?

You’re the kind of person who’d most enjoy a coffee farm or tea plantation tour in some exotic far-off place.

Didn’t know these tours exist? Now you do!

Here are a few examples to consider:

  • Ethiopia — Africa The arabica coffee plant is said to be native to the country of Ethiopia. Ethiopians are friendly people and proud of their history. You’ll learn firsthand about how coffee is grown here and enjoy watching coffee-centered ceremonies. (FANOS Ethiopia Tours)

  • Republic of China — Asia Cultivation of tea goes back some 5,000 years. In the ancient world, fermented tea leaves became an important currency for trade. Today, visitors can join tour groups traveling into China’s rural areas, where breathtaking views of hill-top verdant fields await. (WildChina)
  • Sri Lanka — Asia Here’s a unique paradise still unseen by most Western travelers. This island nation, formerly known as Ceylon, was part of the British Empire for more than 100 years. Sri Lanka is the source of the highly-regarded Ceylon tea, and it is the world’s 4th largest producer of tea. (Jetwing Eco Holidays)

In an interview with The Sun on Sunday in early 2014 Allen talked about the experience of giving birth to her stillborn son six months into her pregnancy.

"It was horrendous and something I would not wish on my worst enemy," she said. "But it's not something that you get over. I held my child and it was really horrific and painful — one of the hardest things that can happen to a person.

"I was overwhelmed by what an incredibly unlucky thing it was to happen. But I had this man standing by my side, who I knew was going to be with me for the rest of my life. I nearly died. But I was numb and I didn't care. I'd just lost my baby and that is a reflection of how numb I was."

Allen married her husband Sam Cooper in June 2011 and went on to have two daughters, Ethel, 3, and Marnie, 2.

Kourtney Kardashian is reportedly furious with Kris Jenner's latest move

Jenner took Kardashian's three children to visit their dad in rehab on Sunday.

More: Kourtney Kardashian makes a stunning and smart decision about Scott Disick

Jenner was still wearing the blue-and-white striped pajamas that all the guests wore at Kim's baby shower on the same day, suggesting that Jenner went straight from the party to the rehab center with Kardashian's kids.

And Kardashian was none too pleased by the paparazzi photos snapped of the reunion.

"Kourtney, of course, was livid that Kris went to see him," a source dished to In Touch. "She went nuclear on Kris."

But Jenner didn't want Disick to see the kids simply out of a kindness to him. The source also reports that she had some serious ulterior motives. "It was a stab at trying to smooth things over with Scott. She wants him and Kourtney to get back together, and she wants it all documented on Keeping Up with the Kardashians."

More: Scott Disick's scary texts may prove he's hit rock bottom

This is the fourth time Disick has been in rehab. He entered the treatment center the same day Lamar Odom was discovered in critical condition at a Las Vegas brothel. Odom had overdosed, and the news was enough to kick Disick into gear to get help for his addiction problems.

But it wasn't just his problems with drugs and alcohol that led to Kardashian breaking things off with her longtime love.

Disick was also caught cheating on her while vacationing back in July.

And a source told People that "Kourtney won't allow Scott split custody. She thinks he is a drunk mess and not fit to be a parent without supervision."

But it seems that by supervised visitations, she didn't mean while he was still in rehab, according to the report from In Touch.

Erectile dysfunction is affecting young men more and more

$
0
0

According to a 2013 study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, 1 in 4 patients with newly developed ED is under the age of 40. Almost half of those men suffer from severe ED, which just means the ED symptoms are more prevalent. It was also observed that more of the younger men suffering from ED tend to smoke or use drugs — two factors that can elevate risk.

MoreOpioids, erectile dysfunction linked

ED has many causes, one of the most common being a simple affect of aging. According to Live Science, poor vascular health can also play a major role, which is why doctors often check for blocked arteries after psychological causes are ruled out.

However, the predominant causes of ED in young men seem to be stress and anxiety. And once stress triggers ED, a lot of men become victim to a vicious cycle of it, because they psych themselves out when gearing up for sex. “A lot of men may have an off night, and then that sticks in their head and hurts their performance for a few weeks or months,” explained Tobias Köhler, M.D., chief of the Division of Male Infertility at Southern Illinois University, to Men's Health. According to Köhler, anxiety stimulates the production of adrenaline, which is a known erection killer. However, more stress is not the only reason more young men are experiencing ED.

Other causes

Poor diet plays a big role as well. We eat more junk and chemically altered foods today than 20 years ago, and that can seriously impact blood flow, which affects everything vascular, including penile function. There's also estrogen in processed food, which directly counteracts a man's testosterone levels, aka the hormone that makes the penis work.

While stress was already mentioned, emotional and relationship problems can easily result in ED. Whether it's suspecting your wife's cheating on you or just the pressure to perform if, say, you're trying to conceive, anything that puts onus on sex may cause the sails to go limp, so to speak.

More6 Extremely common sex problems it's OK to finally talk about

Prescription medications don't help testosterone levels either, especially opioids and strong painkillers. And according to a recent study conducted at George Washington University, there has been a dramatic increase in opioid prescriptions in the last decade.

What can you do?

The first thing you should do if your boyfriend starts experiencing erectile dysfunction is talk about it in as gentle a way as possible. Since the more common reasons for ED in young men are psychologically based, start by seeing if it's a relationship issue you can work out together. If it's not, then suggest he talk to someone unbiased, like a therapist.

If it seems to be stress- or anxiety-related, you might suggest your guy take 10 minutes a day to meditate or do yoga. Exercising regularly is also a great way to clear one's mind, and it also helps improve cardiovascular function.

If after all that the problem persists, it may require a more intense lifestyle change and/or medication. Your guy should consult his general practitioner to rule out any more serious underlying health conditions and to find out what medications might help.

Café takes on vegans in hilarious Facebook battle

More: Hair salon pranking clients is cruel — but funny (WATCH)

The latest online spat to catch our attention is between the White Moose Café in Dublin and every vegan in the world. Yes, that’s right. This café likes to offend en masse and it certainly has a lot of outspoken vegans choking on their quinoa.

It all started when Paul Stenson, who owns the White Moose Café, asked vegan customers to bear in mind that they do not have "50,000 items on [the] menu that suit your idiosyncratic dietary requirements." Apparently this was prompted by a complaint he had received from a vegan diner (presumably about the lack of vegan options available).

The vegans of Facebook didn't take too kindly to his sarcastic tone and came out fighting, urging fellow vegans to post one-star reviews of the White Moose Café online.

In retaliation Stenson posted the following on Facebook: "Given the torrent of abuse and unjustified negative reviews we have been receiving from the vegan population over the past 24 hours, all vegans are now barred from our café. Any vegans attempting to enter the café will be shot dead at point blank range."

More: 3 Ways to earn respect by following the golden rule of branding

Things escalated pretty quickly after this, with several Facebook pages being set up to protest against the café's "anti-veganism" and the argument going viral all over the world.

The fight even went offline when a group of vegans staged a small protest outside the premises. Unfortunately this happened when the café was closed so didn't have the desired effect.

Ultimately, despite all the negativity from vegan corners, Stenson soon realised that there's no such thing as bad press.

"We have been receiving hundreds of messages and fan mail from people saying they will make a point of eating in our café, and the table reservations have been coming in thick and fast, all because of you guys," he posted. "There aren't many restaurants that can say they have sales reps dotted across the globe the way we have. I feel truly grateful. We owe you big time."

And his gloating didn't stop there. He posted this earlier today:

Bride surprises her husband on wedding day with sexy dance (VIDEO)

The video is totally adorable (and hot, to boot) and is such a great example of spouses bringing themselves and their personality into their wedding. See below:

sexy wedding

sexy wedding

My first thought when I heard the bride did a "sexy wedding dance" was that it was a little inappropriate. It definitely could be. There are traditions (garter, I am looking at you) that seem a little tacky and out of place at weddings, but in this case, the sexiness was kind of perfect. The way her husband responded to her dance is beyond adorable, and quite frankly, sex is what makes a marriage go.

More: You'll flip over how much this couple paid for their wedding

It's a fact.

People will say it is other things, and most certainly it is. Humor. Curiosity. A sense of fun and adventure. All these things matter in marriage as well. But when it comes down to it, sexual attraction and that passion for each other is key. Without that, you might as well be roommates.

So these two? They have a great shot. Love the video. Love the hotness. Love it all. Congratulations to the happy couple!

I Knew I Was an Adult When: I found out my daughter has special needs

But looking back, I now know I became a card-carrying member of the grown-up set the morning I looked down at my gorgeous second child, who was only six weeks old, and was struck with the overwhelming feeling that there was something profoundly wrong with her. Yes, I became an adult at 36, the day I knew in my heart that my daughter had significant special needs.

That was the beginning of many, many visits to a host of specialists, therapists and teachers. Countless appointments that started with, “I don’t think it’s anything serious,” and ended with, “Something does seem to be very wrong.” So many invasive tests and procedures that suggested syndromes and diseases that were life-threatening, only to have other tests contradict them. Five MRIs that showed significant brain damage but not one doctor that could tell us what it all meant.

Through it all I had a little girl who needed me to make it better. Yet, I couldn’t. Despite countless professionals reassuring me that she would eventually be OK, she wasn’t.

I have never felt more like an adult. My husband and I were responsible for this little girl. Her future depended on us. The fear that we would screw up was overwhelming at times.

The way I sometimes describe Lizzy’s condition is to compare her to an amazing computer that has all the bells and whistles you could want. Yet each time you turn it on, you get another result. Some days it never turns on. Other days it turns on but gives you information that makes no sense. Then there are the days it may work perfectly for an hour or two and shows you just what an amazing machine it is, only to stop working again.

Before we had Lizzy I believed that doctors, therapists and teachers would always have the answers, and if they didn’t, all I had to do was look harder to find one who did. I lived under the delusion that all I needed was good insurance, a supportive family and a husband who was willing to work as hard as I was, and we would not only find out what was wrong with our sweet girl, we could actually “fix” her.

My friends and family would tell me that I was doing everything I could, but how can that be true when I was unable to help her? My husband and I started to wrap our family in a cocoon. We stopped sharing the more difficult aspects of Lizzy’s issues with our loved ones. I couldn’t take any more looks of pity or comments that I was a saint.

And I was angry. I had always been able to solve any problem that came my way; why couldn’t I do it now when it mattered the most?

I began to realize that my belief that I could always find an answer and a solution came from a place of privilege. One only needs to watch the news or read the paper to see that difficult, horrible things happen to people every day. Why did I think I was immune? What made me so special?

Whenever I have a pang of the “why me’s,” I focus on everything I do have and think about the families who are dealing with everything that we are and more. Many are doing it without the resources and support we are lucky enough to have.

I stopped being consumed with finding the reason behind her condition and started to look for ways to manage it. We were very fortunate to find a doctor who was able to find the right combination of medicines that allow for Lizzy to be able to go to school and sit through a meal with her family. Today she attends a school for children with special needs and is a happy 13-year-old girl who loves princesses, cheerleading, art and music.

Today I see all that we have gone through, and will most likely continue to go through as an odd blessing. I am a much stronger, more understanding adult than I would have ever been if I weren’t the mom of a special princess.

Parents ask school to remove photo of girl with Down syndrome from yearbook

Masha, the 7-year-old who so offended these parents, doesn't even attend the school that has bent to pressure and erased her from the photos of the classroom she sits in. Instead, her mother, Olga Sinayeva, teaches fourth grade there. A single mother, Sinayeva needs to take Masha to work with her, so the girl sits in the class while her mom teaches, but just until next year, when Masha will begin her own schooling.

That's why when the school yearbooks were sent home, Masha was pictured in photos alongside Sinayeva's fourth-graders. Well, the ones who were left, anyway. Sinayeva said on her Facebook page that at least five children transferred out of her class immediately once their parents realized Masha would be there.

It's hard to imagine that people could get any more heartless than that, but the parents soon outdid themselves anyway, insisting to the school that the photos of the girl "ruined" the album and that they edit her out. The school acquiesced, asking for the yearbooks back, which Sinayeva describes on her Facebook page as "so very pompously glossy, with all kinds of poetry about school, friendship and mutual understanding, with pages separated by parchment paper."

More: Stop babying my son with Down syndrome

This is so ugly it's hard to bear. It's true that Russia isn't exactly known for its delicate handling of human rights issues, but anytime the target is a child, there is an added element of awfulness. Individuals with Down syndrome deserve the same amount of basic dignity that we give anyone else, not scorn and ridicule. What's more is that Sinayeva fears that when Masha does finally start school, she won't fare much better. Another mother on Sinayeva's Facebook page claims that when her own child with Down syndrome started school, parents pulled kids from that class too.

Besides outraging scores of people worldwide, Masha's story also caught the attention of Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova, who was outraged to hear how shabbily the parents and the school were treating the 7-year-old. She posted a photo of herself posing with her sister, Oksana — who has autism and cerebral palsy — imploring others to do the same using the hashtag #OurMasha. Just this summer, Oksana was kicked out of a café because the manager claimed she was "scaring" the customers.

More: I have Down syndrome and run my own business

Much of the deplorable attitude surrounding individuals with disabilities springs from simple ignorance, though that's not a good excuse for it. The cure for that ignorance isn't erasing the people we don't understand; it's acknowledging that we have more to learn and inviting those individuals to share our lives and spaces with us. It's encouraging to see people with influence, like Vodianova, taking the lead on that front. Maybe people will see her hugging her sister, unashamed and happily, and see that every disabled individual is someone's sister, child or friend.

Every single child, whether they have Down syndrome or not, deserves the same opportunity to walk through the world without being accused of "ruining it." They deserve to go to school, to be photographed and to live their lives without being tormented or ridiculed or shied away from.

Masha can be edited out of a yearbook, but she can't be edited out of the world, so hopefully people will find a less disgusting way to deal with their own discomfort in regard to what they don't understand.

How to make a blanket ladder — an easy DIY project perfect for cold weather

You won't need anything overly fancy to make this blanket ladder project. Just a few items from the hardware store (full list below), a saw and a drill will get you started.

Cut each of the boards down to size. I used 1 x 3 and 2 x 2 boards to make my ladder. I cut two 1 x 3 boards to 5-feet in length. Then I cut the 2 x 2 boards into four 20-inch pieces. Lay the boards out to figure out the spacing for the rungs of the ladder.

Use wood screws to attach the rungs of the ladder to the sides of the ladder. If the look of the screws bothers you, you can use wood filler to hide them. I was looking for a more rustic look with my ladder so I left them visible.

I chose to sand down the corners and edges of the wood to give it more of an aged, distressed feel.

Brush some wood stain on the ladder with a paint brush, then use an old rag to wipe away any excess stain. Allow the stain to dry overnight.

If you are worried about keeping the ladder from falling over around small kids or rambunctious pets, use a picture hanging kit to safely secure it to the wall.

How I'm teaching my kids privileges are earned

For us, our weeks are full of activities, many of which can be chalked up to the kids' "main job" — a.k.a. school — which brings weekly projects, studying for tests, homework and after-school sports. I must admit, I sometimes wonder if it is all too much, but I see how my kids move about and get it done.

Yes, I am impressed.

I do see why they would want to just take a break when they get home. Cleaning and chores are the last thing a kid would want to think about after all the stresses school brings — but not in my house. Those chores need to get done, or those privileges they expect automatically won't happen.

My oldest son is 17 years old now, and he knows that Monday, Wednesday and Friday are trash nights. I still hear grumbles as I hear the bags getting dragged and his voice getting at his 12-year-old brother, "Get those other bags out!"

This came only after seeing week after week that forgetting trash days meant I'd forget to return the Xbox controller or to unlock the computer and that cell phones disappeared for the weekend.

I do have to turn my face as I grin, but I know that this will be something for which they will thank me later in life.

For now, I hear my 8-year-old getting the new newspaper and trash bag and saying, "I'm ready," as those are the days the guinea pig's cage needs to be cleaned.

Yes, there will be days where I scream out, "What is taking so long," to my middle kids who were suppose to be cleaning the cage but instead are each with a guinea pig in hand giving them love and forgetting there is a job to be done. T

hat's when you'll hear me say "privileges are earned," and get a choir repeating my own words followed with: "Yes, mom."

It has taken many years to make this rule learned. With every week, month and year that passes, they have seen and know what happens if they haven't been able to complete their assigned tasks (unless there is a reasonable explanation of course — such as getting sick, big exams or the occasional "Mama says its a free day!")

By implementing this for my children, I hope they learn that hard work does pay off, and everything your mom tells you is for a reason — at least that's what my mom told me.
