Teen Mom Leah Messer's rehab experience worsens, thanks to Corey Simms

0
0

After a whole lot of prodding from Jeremy Calvert, Messer finally made the right decision and checked into rehab. Unfortunately, she did not receive a whole lot of support from her ex and his new wife. During last week's episode of Teen Mom 2, the smug Simms couple called out Messer repeatedly for being a bad mother. Although plenty of the show's fans agree that Messer is not the ideal parent, they thought that it was unfair of her ex to kick her while she was down.

Simms' lack of sympathy became an even bigger issue after Messer finally showed up at rehab. The reality star desperately wanted to see her kids for Mother's Day, but Simms had other ideas. Unless he knew their exact location, he wasn't willing to let them see their mom. His reasoning? It was Messer's choice to leave her children behind, and now she must suffer the consequences.

In Simms' defense, his former mother-in-law was being a bit difficult when she dropped the girls off. It wouldn't be the end of the world for him to know where his ex was receiving treatment, but Messer's mom seemed to think that disclosing that particular tidbit was a bad idea. As a dad, he simply wanted to know where his kids would be while they were away from him. This is certainly understandable, but while inquiring about his children, he didn't need to bash Messer's recovery efforts.

Messer eventually did get to take the girls to physical therapy, so at least she wasn't entirely barred from spending time with the ones she loves most. But taking the kids to an appointment and hugging them on Mother's Day are two different things.

The Corey and Miranda Simms bashing has still not let up, and this week, the haters have fresh ammunition. During tonight's episode, several critics once again called out Messer's ex for not being supportive of her recovery efforts.

Dealing with an ex in rehab can't be easy, but a little sensitivity on Simms' part would go a long way. He needs to stop shaming Messer for her decision to get help.

Remembering Joan Rivers: What I wish I’d asked my idol when I had the chance

0

Three days a week, I would hop on the LIRR from Locust Valley, switch trains at Jamaica, arrive at Penn Station and make my way up to 1440 Broadway, home of the famous WOR, where Joe Franklin, John Gambling and Larry King had all hosted shows.

More: New Fashion Police teaser pokes fun at show's drama-filled past (VIDEO)

From the subway, I would walk among the suits with my clear stockings (packaged in an egg and not so passé in 1998), chunky heels clicking away like I belonged, yet always a bit in awe of the massive buildings, where the sun glistened off just about anything, paving the way to my new summer office. The freedom to buy a muffin or coffee at the just-opened Starbucks was tickling. Not that I ever actually ordered that coffee — young girls sipping on macchiatos didn’t exist just yet.

At the radio station, I quickly earned the nickname Little Lindsay, and while little (both in age and stature), I came to be known for my big personality, eagerness and willingness to try and do anything. I was even considered pretty professional for my age.

The most famous of hosts on the air at the time was an idol of mine: Joan Rivers. There was no Fashion Police then, and no real red carpet commentary. She was just the brash, blond-haired comedian who had made me laugh and think twice about what outfits I’d wear to work — just in case we ever crossed paths. Her show was on in the evenings, and I worked during the day. But hey, you never know.

My opportunity to meet Joan Rivers arrived when she was slated to fill in for one of the afternoon drive hosts who had called in sick that morning. Ms. Rivers would host his show that afternoon, have a break and then host hers a few hours later.

I knew I would meet her, and my outfit was coincidentally perfect: a white pleated skirt with a thick ribbon waistband that my 16-year-old self considered high fashion, a light white sleeveless knit sweater and black sandals with a little heel and jewels making a V at my toes. My normally curly hair had been blown straight, a pattern starting that summer (and continuing today) meant to impress my new and older off-to-college boyfriend. What would he think after I met Joan Rivers?

It was 2 p.m. She was broadcasting out of Joan Hamburg’s studio and I hadn’t yet run into her.

So I decided to ditch fate and timing and make it happen.

I would find a reason to need something from Joan Hamburg’s studio, break my way in on a commercial break and see her in person. With a deep breath, my shoulders back and feigned confidence intended to mask my shaky hands, I opened the door to the control room.

“Hey guys,” I said to the engineer and the producer, “I’ll just be a second. I need Joan Hamburg’s binder from today’s show.”

With nods all around I opened the first steel door. And then the second steel door into where she was surrounded by a radio console of buttons, microphones and switches. The entire control room would hear our conversation through the speakers and see it through the glass.

I smiled at her.

She squinted at me.

And before I could speak, she did.

“Who are you and what are you doing in my studio?” the raspy voice shot toward me. Knowing that timing was one of my best assets, I punted right back.

“I’m Lindsay, the summer intern here, and since this is actually Joan Hamburg’s studio, I was just grabbing her resource binder from this morning’s show.”

Let’s just pause so I can describe my surroundings. There was no available Internet (I don’t even think I knew the word “digital”), so show research was saved in binders, each studio a rainbow of three-ringed plastic cases filled with newspaper clippings and magazine articles. And to reach the host? Typical schoolgirl scratches of paper passed from producer to talent, of course. Hand signals across the glass and verbally through a sound system when on commercial break also worked as well.

And Joan Rivers? She was dressed as you would picture her to be. Colorful blazer, a big choker necklace and matching earrings. Her face was fully painted and her hair so done it wouldn’t blow. Even in Chicago.

A smile crept across her face at my smart-mouthed response.

“Well, do you need anything else?” she asked.

“Nope, I’m all good. Thank you, Ms. Rivers.”

“My pleasure. Now get out of my studio,” she said with a warm smile that made me love, not hate her.

“Great to meet you, Ms. Rivers,” I replied. “Everything I hoped it would be, actually.” I smiled a big, toothy smile.

“You too, chicklet, you too,” I heard while opening the first steel door.

I met her. I met Joan Rivers. And it was fun! Now, what to do with Joan Hamburg’s binder so I wouldn’t misplace it? I had no sooner put the binder down when Joan’s producer breathlessly ran over to my desk.

“Lindsay,” she said. I turned around, and as my eyebrows were in mid-raise, she continued. “Joan wants to see you back in the studio. Can you come in and talk to her on the next break?”

“Absolutely. Is everything OK?” My mind went to the worst. Did I do something to offend? Too quippy? But back into the studio I went, nervously. Steel door. Second steel door.

“So, I’ve been thinking,” Ms. Rivers said, smiling. “I like you. You’ve got chutzpa, kid. Want to be on the radio with me tonight?”

“I would love to, Joan. Thank you so much. Is there something specific you want to talk about or are we just winging it?”

“Of course, chicklet, and I can see that your mind already works like a producer’s. This is good.” She paused and I waited. “Are you comfortable talking about being a female intern on the radio?” she asked. I nodded.

Reminder: It’s 1998. Internships weren’t as prevalent as they are today. “We are going to talk about Monica Lewinsky.”

Oh. And there was that. But…

Joan Rivers wants me to be on the radio with her tonight!

After calling my parents to alert them that I’d be taking a late train home because, ahem, I’d be joining Joan Rivers on the radio in a few hours, I anxiously counted down the minutes to “go time.”

I sat in the control room and watched the first 20 minutes of Joan’s show, just as I would any other on WOR, separated from Ms. Rivers by only a few thick pieces of glass. Perched at her console, she calmly devoured a vending machine-sized bag of M&Ms (her staple  —  not a day without them) as the minutes flew by. Her M&Ms dwindled as my heartbeat sped up.

During the second commercial break, I made my way into her studio. Only one steel door to pass through this time. I sat across from her, put on a headset and rested my hands on the honey-colored wood.

“Some M&Ms for good luck,” Ms. Rivers said, her perfectly manicured hands dropping the tiny chocolates into mine.

“Thanks,” I replied, an impressionist palette of red, yellow and green forming on my sweaty palm.

And then it was time.

The producer signaled our countdown through the glass.

3... 2... 1... “This is Joan Rivers and we’re back! Sitting with me in the studio tonight is a young, hot, very fashionable little chickie named Lindsay. She’s my intern. And we are discussing  —  well, Monica Lewinsky. So, chickadee, would you shtup the president of the United States if you had the chance?”

More: Joan Rivers: Top 20 most memorable quotes

The rest of the interview was a blur, only to be played back to me on the Dictaphone that my parents held up to the radio to record it.

In the years since Joan Rivers had me on her show, we gabbed about our puppies (both Havanese) and our shared love of plays when we would run into each other at Manhattan Theatre Club or the most obscure basement black box. She gifted me jewelry from her QVC collection, highlighting her notorious generosity. She would ask about boys I’d been dating (her curiosity abounded) and then let me know that they weren’t good enough for me based on my paltry descriptions. And I was lucky enough to produce the last interview that she and her daughter Melissa did together on Larry King Now.

Yet, in all of our conversations, I should have asked her one question:

Joan Rivers, would you shtup the president of the United States if you had the chance?

Maybe she already had. Either way, I’m sure she would have come up with the most perfect and unexpected answer.

Switched at Birth hits hard on myths about Down syndrome

0
0

Within the first few seconds of the exclusive featurette featured below, John Kennish practically hyperventilates while berating Toby — the teenage father — about whether he knows "how much it costs to raise a kid like that?"

More: Switched at Birth theory: The baby is the plot twist Toby needs most

Ouch. Look, I'm only five years into my own parenting-a-child-with-Down-syndrome gig, but I feel qualified to respond.

The truth is that raising a child with Down syndrome will always be more expensive and much harder than raising the unborn child you've conjured up in your mind. After all, most expectant parents imagine a parenthood punctuated by perfection, happiness and smooth sailing when they have no reason to believe otherwise.

This leads me to the argument I hope Switched at Birth presents in Monday night's episode: raising all children is hard and expensive, period. Is it fair to assume a tougher, costlier experience with a child who has an extra chromosome?

More: 10 Switched at Birth spoilers proving it's going to be a controversial season

The oldest of our children, Charlie, has Down syndrome, and we received a prenatal diagnosis because we thought we wanted to be prepared. The Switched at Birth episode offers a much more complex thought process than we experienced, through characters who say what they think is right, no matter the ugliness or ignorance of those thoughts.

They debate multiple what-ifs. None are positive.

My hope is that because the show manages to spotlight so many myths about having a child with Down syndrome, real education — and thus mindset shifts — will take place.

Not one of the characters conflicted on the show truly arrives at the right answer, because no one can predict any unborn child's future.

Our minds don't consider a child born with the worst mouth an orthodontist has ever seen (my parents didn't). Our minds don't consider the cost of raising a child who has no motivation to keep a job, pay bills or help take out the trash because he is in your basement playing video games at the age of 28. Our minds equally don't consider the possibility of giving birth to a gifted child who will excel at every expensive extracurricular activity known to man, requiring global travel (cha-ching) and Ivy League tuition (cha-ching, cha-ching).

Sure, if your unborn child has heart issues, which some babies born with Down syndrome do have, then you may have a future of medical bills.

Our Charlie is healthy as a horse and in some ways, our easiest child. He doesn't hold grudges. He doesn't sulk or fixate on something that hasn’t gone his way. That extra chromosome doesn't come with rose-colored glasses, but he doesn't dwell. He sees the best in people, refusing to consider their frowns are anything more than a resting expression prior to being greeted by Charlie.

Should you make a decision about continuing a pregnancy based on speculation and pessimism? How many pregnancies would continue if that were the litmus test?

Raising children — minus qualifiers like extra chromosomes or poor eyesight or a speech impediment or hair that will tangle in knots during the night and require dedicated, delicate combing time each and every morning of a childhood — is hard and expensive, and you shouldn't dive into the fertility pool if you're going to start placing conditions on the outcome.

What guarantees does a parent have about the child he or she has conceived? The answer is: none.

My Charlie has been the most incredible gift for my husband and me. Having Charlie has changed our lives in ways I never could have dreamed. This stubborn, full-of-personality, blond-headed little boy has given my life a real purpose. He gave my interest in writing a passion to write about. He tests my patience every day.

Just like our other two children.

What price would we have paid if we chose to abort him?

More: October is Down syndrome Awareness Month: Moms share most maddening myths

For me, all lives have value. I'm still pro-choice and believe a woman should be able to make her own decisions about her body, and I cringe at state efforts to ban abortion based on a Down syndrome diagnosis.

But for me, abortion was not a choice because I wanted my beautiful, imperfect baby regardless of the degree or visibility of his imperfections.

Frankly, we got a pretty perfect deal out of the whole thing. Regardless of the storyline's outcome, I hope Switched with Birth's thorough exploration of this sensitive topic opens minds — and hearts.

Watch the Switched at Birth cast discuss the controversial storyline, and share your thoughts in the comments below.

Kim Davis gets meme'd by the Internet, and it's hilarious

When Davis' appeal to the United States Supreme Court was denied and she still refused to do her job and issue the licenses, Davis was called before a federal court judge on charges of willful contempt. The parties petitioning for Davis to be found in contempt requested she only be fined, but after hearing Davis' testimony and her attorney's representation to the court that she refused to allow other members of her staff to issue the licenses, the court ruled that Davis should be incarcerated until she agrees to issue the licenses.

1. Shiny metal

"Metal is everything," says Mark Cutler, chief designer for nousDECOR. Cutler, who has worked with Jennifer Lopez and Steve Carell, says that shiny brass is making a comeback in Hollywood.

Beverly Hills designer Ryan Saghian agrees. "Right now, it's all about accentuating with brass," says Saghian. Look for it in fixtures, home decor, lighting and even wallpaper!

2. Black rooms

"Black rooms are a huge trend," says Cutler. "Black is being used everywhere… even on house exteriors!"

3. Or blue...

If black is too extreme for you, then think blue. "Bring the alluring melancholy of deep indigo into your home with saturated hues and velvet upholstery," say the experts at Dot&Bo. "Capture the essence of a world at dusk with the help of dark woven lampshades, and bring a brooding energy to your interiors."

5. Gaudy glam

6. Friendly front yards

"People are finally rediscovering that a front yard can actually be used and not just looked at," says artist and designer Pablo Solomon. "They are creating interesting, comfortable and surprisingly private areas in their front yards and returning to the mid-century neighborhood pastime of watching the world go by from the comfort of a front porch or lawn chair."

7. Big floral prints

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/99803/Home-office-contemporary-home-office-baltimore'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/36e1b5790d2290c5_8-6189/contemporary-home-office.jpg' border=0 width='500' height='334' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary/home-office' >Contemporary Home Office</a> by <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/professionals/interior-designer/c/Elkridge--MD' >Elkridge Interior Designers & Decorators</a> <a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/pro/afpinteriors/afp-interiors-llc' >AFP Interiors LLC</a></small></div>Image: Houzz.com

Large-scale florals are hot right now, according to the experts at Laura Ashley. Replace geometric-patterned drapes and upholstery with big flower prints and mix with stripes and other patterns for a French-inspired look that's just now making its way to the States.

8. Decorated ceilings

wallpaper-ceiling-decorating

"The coolest decorating trend is the inclusion of the ceiling in the concept," says interior designer Arthur Rooks. "Although the ceiling has been decorated in homes since the Renaissance, most of us have never considered the idea of viewing the ceiling as the sixth surface in a room." The design doesn't have to be tedious or expensive — simple paint or wallpaper will do!

"I wallpaper a lot of the ceilings in my projects to give a dramatic accent," says south Florida designer Alena Capra. "I typically use wallpaper with metallic hues for a nice reflection of light."

9. Upcycled furniture and decor

<div><a href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/1172152/dordesign-contemporary-folding-chairs-and-stools-new-york'><img src='http://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/2f71adee0ff759df_8-0463/contemporary-folding-chairs-and-stools.jpg' border=0 width='306' height='422' /></a></div><div style='color:#444;'><small><a style='text-decoration:none;color:#444;' href='http://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary/folding-chairs-and-stools' >Contemporary Folding Chairs And Stools</a></small></div>Image: Houzz.com

"Of course, sustainable is big," says Solomon. "A growing part of that trend is the reuse of materials and the refunctioning of what were once thought to be only industrial throwaways." Like dordesign's amazing floor coverings, ottomans and director chairs created from recycled billboards.

It is nice to see her getting out from behind the camera a bit and back in front of it for a quick selfie.

Many commenters noticed the other people in the background of her photo and were trying to figure out where the celeb is, some noting it looks like maybe a hotel. Honestly, I don't care where she is — I want to be there, too, with that drink in my hand preferably, not thinking about how summer is coming to an end soon.

Lookin' good there, Lizzie.

YouTube vlogger's latest video takes fat-shaming to new level

More: Horrible social media account was dedicated to 'fat-shaming' celebrities

If you were to pause this video three seconds in and were unaware of its title, you would assume Arbour was about to give a tutorial on how to get a Kesha-inspired do. However, it takes only four seconds for her demeanor to become increasingly cruel and obnoxious.

“Dear fat people,” she begins, “some people are already mad at this video. What are you going to do, fat people? What? Are you going to chase me?"

Within 12 seconds of speaking, Arbour has proven herself a bully. Every word she uses is offensive. She has clearly has never struggled with a significant amount of weight gain or the inability to lose it.

More: Is thin-shaming just as bad as fat-shaming?

Founder of ProjectLifesize and plus-size YouTube vlogger Meghan Tonjes took to her channel to respond to Arbour’s video hours after it went live. Tonjes was brought to tears, expressing her concern for what effect it may have on women and men who are overweight.

Meghan Tonjes video

Meghan Tonjes video

“I’m really upset about the Nicole Arbour video,” Tonjes says in her response. “And it’s not necessarily even just the video. It’s the mindset that I find really upsetting, even if it’s done for 'satire' comedy, which it just isn’t. I find it really harmful, if I’m being honest."

Tonjes continues, "It’s so easy to go after fat people, because it takes a lot of time and energy and effort to view people as people. And to view them as well, fully formed people that you have to get to know. It’s so easy to put people in a box of good and bad and to look at someone and to just think that you know everything they’ve ever gone through or where they are with their body or their relationship with their body.”

More: Teach kids to love their bodies, because the media isn't (VIDEO)

The defining moment of Arbour 's video is when she concludes that the offensive nature of fat-shaming is nonexistent, but instead, fat-shaming is in fact a genius idea to shame overweight people into some kind of health-conscious epiphany.

"Fat-shaming is not a thing,” Arbour says. “Fat people made that up. It's the race card without a race. Fat-shaming. Who came up with that? That’s f***ing brilliant. Yes, shame people who have bad habits until they f***ing stop.”

However, selfishly ridiculing a person's body is body-shaming and criticizing an overweight person’s body is proven to be counterproductive if you are genuinely concerned about their health.

“Dear Fat People” is not an expression of genuine concern. This video is a poor excuse for entertainment and ironically for Arbour, her video defines body-shaming. It is material like this floating around the Web that further advances the negative movement. If she had truly wanted to express her concern for those who are suffering from obesity, this was not the direction to take. Body-shaming is not a joke. Do not start making it one.

What does it mean to be an early bird versus a night owl?

0

All humans operate on a 24-hour clock, because that's how long it takes the earth to spin around fully on its axis. However, your natural cycle, or circadian rhythm, has to do with how long your body can stay awake during that 24-hour cycle. If you're a night owl, you can comfortably stay awake for longer stretches of that 24-hour cycle.

More: Understanding benefits of sleep — and risks of not enough sleep

The science behind why we have longer or shorter rhythms is that night owl and early bird brain matter is actually different. Night owls have less insulating matter that transmit neural messages, so they're brains tend to remain active longer. The funny thing is, despite your brain make up, you can actually change from a night owl to an early bird and back over your lifetime. It all hinges on changing hormones, and how your outside stimuli affects you (aka high school, to college classes, to work schedules). However, if you've tended towards one rhythm or the other over a long stretch of time, you may find you exhibit certain qualities over others. If you're not sure which category you fall into, here are some tell tale signs, and common personality traits of night owls and early birds

Night owls

Image: Giphy

Tendencies

1. You have a very hard time getting up in the morning.

2. You almost never fall asleep before midnight.

3. You find you're most productive in the mid to late afternoon.

4. You're generally more extroverted, and enjoy going out more than staying in.

5. You're emotionally stable for the most part.

6. You drink caffeine like it's your job.

7. You suffer from insomnia.

What it means about you

Lots of research has been done on night owls and their intelligence levels. Overall, studies suggest night owls are more creative, because they can remain mentally alert for longer. One study in particular says night owls are more intelligent than their early bird counterparts.

However, the downside to having a slightly more active brain is it can spawn more narcissists and psychopaths. WebMD also says night owls tend to have problems with depression, alcoholism and are often prone to illness, because they're usually not allowing their bodies enough sleep.

Early Birds

Image: Giphy

Tendencies

1. You enjoy your rest. This often means you cut nights short to get your full eight hours.

2. You are most productive in the morning.

3. You tend to get that 2 p.m. drowsy feeling.

4. You tend to sleep well — meaning the whole night through.

5. You thrive on the typical 9-to-5 work day.

6. You tend towards being a home body.

7. You're pretty reliable and punctual.

What it means about you

Early birds really do tend to get the worm, so to speak. Since they are at their best earlier in the day, they're awesome at getting things done. A 2008 study at Texas University said self-described early risers on average score a full GPA point higher than their night owl counterparts. They work really well within traditional systems and structures, and thus appreciate logic above all else. They're mega goal oriented, and love to plan ahead. They're not afraid of the super early morning workouts, so they're often healthier overall.

They sleep much better, which also contributes to them being healthier and happier. All this makes them more optimistic people, and less prone to vices that drag down their productivity. However, the downside of all this productivity is higher stress levels, and a more compulsive, schedule-driven lifestyle, which can seriously diminish one's creativity.

Insiders reveal Tamra Judge's sex party was way worse than shown on TV

A naked sushi waitress and fake-out sex tape are nothing compared to what one partygoer says was left on the editing-room floor.

"Tamra pulled out a large pink strap-on sex toy and was walking around the party holding it," a witness told Radar Online. "Then she got tied up on a sex machine and someone else put the toy on her. Eddie was laughing, but the guests at the party did not find it amusing.

"Shayne was stroking the toy while it was on Tamra," said the source. "But then she yanked it off of her and yelled at her to cut it out because she was embarrassing herself."

5 Tips that will make your post-summer feet look (and feel) great

0
0

1. Give yourself a foot bath

Your feet need a day off. Give then a warm bath using black tea, which has tannic acid, a natural astringent that may help prevent athlete's foot. Use a pumice stone on your damp heels and calluses. It will make your feet look great in open-backed shoes.

First, soak your feet in water for about 15 minutes. This will soften the skin on your feet. Remove the thick skin using the pumice stone. Another effective way to exfoliate the dead skin on your feet is to use moisturizing scrubs made out of botanicals. After scrubbing, you can apply foot cream like shea or cocoa butter. Look for creams with salicylic acid or urea to soften those calluses.

2. Moisturize

Try medicated heel pads to soften your calluses while you walk. After exfoliating calluses, moisturize your skin with heavy cream. Look for the creams that have petrolatum, which is an emollient, or those with humectants like lactic acid to draw moisture to your skin. If your very dry, cracked heels don't respond to moisturizer, it's time to see an experts — a dermatologist or a podiatrist — to get a prescription for the right treatment.

3. Keep them healthy

Remember that prevention is better than cure. To prevent athlete's foot, maintain proper hygiene, make sure your feet stay thoroughly dry and make it a habit to wear fresh socks. Athlete's foot loves dark and damp conditions.

If you're already stricken, you can buy treatments over the counter — common ingredients include terbinafine, ciclopirox, miconazole, tolnaflate and clotrimazole. These are useful in removing fungus on your feet. You may already know the benefits of tea tree oil for skin. For mild cases of athlete's foot, you can use tea tree oil.

If you have sweaty feet, look for powder or spray with aluminum chloride hexahydrate. If you have dry feet, use a more emollient treatment, but make sure your feet are thoroughly dry before you apply any antifungal cream or lotion.

4. Protect and support your feet

If you wear open sandals or go barefoot at the beach, make sure your feet are protected. Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. When you wear shoes, support your feet using insoles. This will make your feet feel comfortable, especially if you're standing for a long time. Look for the ones with hard plastic shells or cups at the heel.

5. Get a proper pedicure

If the pedicure technique your nail technician use is wrong, you could get hangnails and ingrown toenails. Make sure your nail technician will push your cuticles back, and not cut them. Cutting them often leads to infection. If you clean your toenails yourself, make sure you follow their natural curves.

Make sure your nail polish does not have the hazardous chemicals formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate or toluene. Also, make sure your nail polish does not have alcohol as part of its ingredients. This is crucial because your nails will become brittle, as you grow older. You can use petroleum jelly, cuticle cream or and vitamin E oil to moisturize your toenails.

Gluten-free blueberry coffee cake with lemon glaze recipe

Coffee cake doesn't require a hot beverage to enjoy! Make this cake for guests or your family to enjoy, and serve it with (or without) a favorite drink.

Prep time: 10 minutes | Bake time: 25 minutes | Inactive time: 25 minutes | Total time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

For the cake

  • 1 cup gluten-free baking flour, plus extra for coating the pan and the blueberries
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 4 ounces blueberries
  • Nonstick cooking spray

For the glaze

  • 1-1/2 cups confectioner's sugar, plus extra as needed
  • 1-2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, plus 1 tablespoon water

Directions:

For the cake

  1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray an 8 x 4-inch loaf pan with the nonstick cooking spray. Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of the extra flour into the pan, and tap it around the bottom and sides of the pan to coat it. Set aside.
  2. To a large bowl, add the gluten-free flour, sugar, xanthan gum and salt, and whisk to combine.
  3. To a separate bowl, add the egg, and beat well. Add the milk, vanilla and lemon zest, and whisk to combine.
  4. Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture, and mix with a wooden spoon until combined.
  5. To a clean bowl, add the blueberries. Sprinkle in about 1 tablespoon of the extra gluten-free flour, and toss to coat the blueberries. Fold the blueberries into the batter.
  6. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan, and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a knife inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  7. Let cool slightly on a wire rack. Run a flat, plastic spatula around the edges of the pan, and then invert the pan, keeping your hand on the top of the cake, and tip it out. Allow to cool thoroughly on the wire rack, then drizzle with the glaze.

For the glaze

  1. In a small bowl, add the lemon juice to the confectioner's sugar, and mix until combined. Adjust the consistency to your liking. If you’d like a thinner glaze, add a tablespoon of water to the mixture.
  2. When the cake has completely cooled, drizzle the glaze on top.
  3. Slice and serve.

Kendra on Top: An insider reveals the real reason Kendra is so angry at Hank

0

In celebration, here's a look at how tonight's episode illustrated the old adage "Two wrongs don't make a right," or, perhaps, "What's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander." Or, you know, that Wilkinson and Baskett's marriage needs some serious TLC.

The last leg of the press blitz

Last week, Wilkinson's 10-day London trip was nearing its end, and the former Playboy bunny was clearly making the most of her time in the UK. After a momentary scare when her father, who she'd recently reconciled with, called to reveal he was headed for surgery, Wilkinson resumed her whirlwind round of press appearances — after her dad, Eric, assured her he was OK, of course.

So despite being "so tired I can't even see straight," Wilkinson soldiered on. Although, admittedly, she hoped her next stop on a reality TV show about, erm, reality TV would be a big more lighthearted than some of her other UK stops so far. (We're looking at you, curmudgeonly old lady from Loose Women.)

And, well, how else would you define a show on which Wilkinson starts off talking about sex with Hugh Hefner and ends up entangled in a faux threesome? To be clear, it was all in good fun. I would totally tune into that show, should it come stateside.

With all of her official press appearances for the trip now concluded, Wilkinson decided to cap it all off with one more fantastic photo op — sitting front-row at a top UK designer's fashion show during their Fashion Week.

Front row at Fashion Week

It's a bit of a departure for Wilkinson, who hilariously says of coming into her own at this age, "I feel like I've cleansed my soul. I pretty much had a 20s douche." Somebody cross-stitch that on a pillow and get it in an Etsy store, stat!

After posing with a giant blow-up doll, Wilkinson runs into an even more exciting attendee — James Anderson, a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys who happens to be an acquaintance of Baskett's from back home. Seriously, you guys, it's a small world.

Of course, Wilkinson hits the nail on the head when she is anxious to sit beside Anderson. "One picture will be taken of me talking to him, and it'll be 'Kendra f***ed him.'" Naturally, tabloids essentially ran with headlines of Wilkinson's inappropriate flirting the next morning. As for what really went on between the two, Kendra on Top's executive producer had this to say: "Kendra spent a better part of the day with him and partied with him that night. They were in the moment and enjoying London."

The effect of Wilkinson's work on the kids

Intriguing. Regardless, Wilkinson was heading home and happy to be doing so. At this point, she'd been in the UK for nearly two weeks and — prior to that — filming Marriage Boot Camp and I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! back to back. The absence definitely affected Wilkinson, who couldn't wait to get back to her kids. But could it have affected little Hank and Alijah in a negative way, too?

"Yes, absolutely. Though kids are fairly resilient and I am sure she has more than adequate care for them, they definitely feel the absence," asserts SheKnows Parenting Expert Lori Pace, pointing out from personal experience that her own children call her and want to come home after only a weekend at their dad's.

"The early years are the backbone for developing that bond between mother and child," she says. "Though I understand she needs to earn an income for a family, her kids need to see her as well. I would have made the effort to take them with me."

The trickle-down of miscommunication

When Wilkinson made it back to LAX, Baskett surprised her at the curb in a new truck wrapped in logos for his newest endeavor, GAEMS. Or, judging from Wilkinson's reaction, a mobile marketing vehicle of mortification.

"I feel like I'm in a billboard," she says, among more colorful expressions.

"In Kendra's mind, this may be just another example of Hank attracting unwanted and embarrassing attention to her," explains SheKnows Dating and Relationship Expert Laurel House. "While advertising his new company can bring positive financial attention, the blatant advertisement is still stepping out of a box that Kendra feels comfortable in. And because this public display was, yet again, not discussed with and agreed upon by Kendra, it feels forced on her."

What Baskett should have done, explains House, is communicated to his wife how he was feeling and what he planned to do before he did it. This way she would have felt like part of the decision-making process instead of an afterthought.

"The problem is that by Kendra making undercutting comments, poking fun and making Hank feel like a fool or not good enough, her resentful actions may start to cause resentment in Hank. Hank is not advertising his company to hurt or embarrass Kendra. In fact, he is probably doing it in an attempt to build his own platform so that he can start contributing to the marriage in a positive way."

The aftermath of resentment

And it just goes downhill from the truck debacle, my friends. Baskett is obviously hurt by Wilkinson's reaction, and her next question doesn't help. "How are the kids? Have you been feeding them right?" After pointedly responding, "Of course I have," Baskett goes on the offensive.

Pulling the ol' "I hate having to do this, but" trick out of the playbook, Baskett explains that he had to Google Wilkinson to find out the extent of her wild times in London. She insists most of that was typical paparazzi manipulation and shoots down the conversation.

Tellingly, she says to the camera, "I want him to know how it felt, you know, when I read stuff through the press. I want him to know what it's like. I'm looking at our marriage like a whole new marriage."

But because Baskett wants things to go back to the way they used to be, they just keep butting heads. As the episode draws to a close, Wilkinson walks out onto the balcony where a depressed Baskett is sitting.

And here's where things get really real, and really tough. When Baskett vents to Wilkinson about the distance between them and she reiterates that she still has stuff to work through, he responds, "How long do you want to punish me and make me realize I failed?"

The space between them

Wilkinson tells the camera, "I'm tired of trying to fix him. He needs to get stronger." But, for her part, insists the show's executive producer, Wilkinson really is trying not to hold a grudge against Baskett for his part in last year's cheating scandal.

"Kendra is trying very hard not to be angry with Hank, but her biggest problem is that it took him so long to tell her what really happened last year. She feels that his reluctance to share the truth with her indicates some deeper problem between them, and she's struggling to figure out how to deal with it. Her emotions are raw and real and, even she would admit, imperfect."

Understandable, right? These things take time, and they take effective communication. But if Wilkinson is committed to making her marriage work, the couple might need to up their marriage counseling sessions.

Says House, "Some couples simply cannot effectively communicate without a marriage counselor present, and any attempt to try can be destructive. This happens when the individuals communicate in different styles, leading one or both people to mistake the intended meaning, become offended and defensive, feel confused or threatened, and react in a non-productive way."

The best-case course of action for couples like Wilkinson and Baskett (who obviously fit this mold) is to wait to hash out the tricky topics with a counselor present.

"That being said, Kendra is knowingly stirring the pot," says House. "She is saying and doing things in an attempt to upset and get back at Hank. As the old saying goes, two wrongs don't make a right. It just causes two people to be really pissed, hurt and push either against or away."

The bottom line

This much is certain — with tension that palpable between the two of them, Wilkinson and Baskett need to address the situation before the stress starts manifesting in their kids.

"As a mom who went through a less than amicable divorce when my children were very young, I know the effects stress and tension have on children," Pace shares. "My now 9-year-old still remembers the fights and running [from] the room to get away from it."

So where do Wilkinson and Baskett go from here?

Says Pace, "Kids absorb what the parents put off. Minimizing it could be as simple as the parents agreeing to 'fake it' or by taking the time to spend with the child in a conversation about the 'weirdness' having nothing to do with them."

Caitlyn Jenner labels Bruce a 'traditionalist,' haters fire back (VIDEO)

During her appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that will air next week, Jenner tried to explain the evolution of her views on gay marriage, much to the confusion and chagrin of Ellen and the bemusement of commenters online.

She said, "I was not for it! I thought, 'I'm a traditionalist…' I kind of like tradition, and [marriage] was always between a man and a woman. And I'm thinking, 'I don't quite get it...'"

People online are honestly bewildered.

One person said, "I'm confused then. Because if she always considered herself a woman, authentically (her words, not mine), and she married women then how did she not view herself as a lesbian."

Another pointed out, "talk about a walking contradiction… Jenner is one very confused individual."

One person thinks Jenner is quite the hypocrite, saying, "[She] sometimes talks out of both sides of [her] mouth. Hard to believe [she] even knows what [she’s] talking about at all."

I wholeheartedly believe that I don't understand what anyone who is transgender goes through, but in an effort to understand what she is saying, I like to think that years — decades, even — of having to be a man and suppressing all her feelings, thoughts and actions in an effort to be "normal" may have something to do with her beliefs. Basically, she had to be a man for her entire life, so it's not entirely surprising that those thoughts normalized into her expressed feelings.

One other commenter felt that same way, saying, "This doesn't surprise me. I think part of suppressing her feelings included taking such a conservative stance on gay marriage."

And while her stance on marriage equality might be confusing, her thoughts about dating in her new life are actually pretty spot-on. She had her relationships and has a fulfilling family life, so maybe she really isn’t thinking about jumping into the dating pool just yet.

Supernatural speculation: Who will and won't return in Season 11?

0

While chatting with TVLine, executive producer Jeremy Carver talked about The Darkness and how it will hugely affect Sam and Dean. "As responsible as the boys feel for having released The Darkness and how much they personally want to defeat it, they’re not going to be able to do it alone," he said. "They’re going to have to confront some figures from their past. They're going to have to make some unexpected and unholy alliances involving folks from their past, which will have personal ramifications as well. Because these are some pretty significant figures from their past."

More: Supernatural finale: Did Sam and Dean just end the world?

Anyone else both terrified and excited? First, I'm all about fan favorites returning to Supernatural. However, when it comes to Sam and Dean making deals with the devil, so to speak, well, fans of the series know how that usually goes.

With that said, who do you think will and won't return? Seeing as it's called "The Darkness," this probably means some of the darker and more evil characters who have appeared throughout the series may return. Don't take my word for it, but that's just my guess, especially since Carver said Sam and Dean will make "unholy alliances." Also, the returning faces are "significant figures" from the brothers' past, which means characters who most likely appeared in more than episode. There are a ton of options, so let's take a closer look.

Most likely to return

Lucifer, played by Mark Pellegrino

Lucifer

Image: The CW

If Lucifer doesn't return, I might throw a fit. Pellegrino played this character spectacularly, which is one of many reasons why I hope he comes back. Who better to make an "unholy alliance" with the Winchesters than Lucifer himself? He definitely put Sam and Dean through hell, so I'd say his chances of popping up are pretty good. Plus, here's what Jared Padalecki told Entertainment Weekly: "I think [The Darkness] certainly opens the door for Lucifer and/or God to pop up. We're certainly going back to that and going a bit more biblical and having our take on the writings that didn't make it into the Bible."

John Winchester, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan

John Winchester

Image: The CW

Ever since John Winchester gave up his own life to save Dean and went to Hell, where did his spirit go? Did he go back to Hell? Did he go to Heaven? Who knows, but The Darkness could easily bring back Papa Winchester — and maybe as a darker figure. Plus, Morgan really wants to return. As he told TVLine, "I would absolutely love to come back." Well, let's hope he can clear his schedule.

Ruby, played by Genevieve Padalecki, née Cortese

Ruby

Image: The CW

How great would it be for Ruby to pop up in Season 11? Not only would Padalecki get to play alongside his wife again, but watching Dean have to possibly work with the demon who persuaded his own brother to turn against him, all while being responsible for starting the apocalypse, well, that'd be fantastic.

Meg, played by Rachel Miner

Meg

Image: The CW

Anyone else miss Meg? What about her scenes with Castiel? Before her death, she ended somewhat on good terms with the Winchesters. With that said, I'd love to see her work alongside Sam, Dean and Cas once again.

Samuel, played by Mitch Pileggi

Samuel

Image: The CW

Based on this photo shared from the Season 11 set, well, there seems to be a very good chance Grandpa Winchester could be seen again.

Azazel or Yellow Eyes, played by Fredric Lehne

Azazel

Image: The CW

Azazel, formerly Yellow Eyes, has to return, right? Supernatural all started with his demonic presence. So, it only makes sense that the demon who killed Mary Winchester and Sam's love Jessica would be brought back with The Darkness, right?

Who probably won't return

Abaddon, played by Alaina Huffman

Abaddon

Image: The CW

As much as I'd like to see Huffman kick butt again as a Knight of Hell, I think there's a very slim chance we'll see her wreak havoc on Sam and Dean's lives. But, hey, don't quote me.

Zachariah, played by Kurt Fuller

Zachariah

Image: The CW

Oh, Zachariah. He was a true evil angel, all about the apocalypse and getting Dean to officially become the Michael sword. But I just really hope he doesn't return, because he was one villain who really got under my skin.

Bela, played by Lauren Cohan

Bela

Image: The CW

Bela, Bela, Bela. She could easily return, especially since she made that deal with the Crossroads Demon, but I'd rather see the others mentioned above return over her.

Dick Roman, played by James Patrick Stuart

Dick Roman

Image: The CW

Let's just hope we don't see this Big Bad Leviathan again, because not only was he horrible, he killed Bobby!

Adam, played by Jake Abel

Adam

Image: The CW

Adam, or should I say the second Michael sword? I doubt we'll see Sam and Dean's half-brother anytime soon, but if Lucifer gets out of the pit, then does that mean Adam/Michael will escape it, too?

Benny, played by Ty Olsson

Benny

Image: The CW

Did anyone else adore Benny? I was thrilled to see that guest appearance from him during Season 10. With that said, seeing as Sam and Dean might be aligning themselves with characters who aren't really friends, this probably won't include Benny. After all, he and Dean were besties. Sadly, Benny will probably remain in Purgatory.

With that said, let's also hope Bobby and Chuck find their way back to a few Season 11 episodes, because I need them back in my life, stat.

During an interview with Piers Morgan, which will air Friday, the legendary R&B singer opened up about how Nicole came to be his daughter.

He said, "I went to a Prince concert and there on stage in the middle of the concert was this 4-year-old kid playing the tambourine. So I went backstage and I knew the mother and I knew the father [Karen Moss and Peter Michael Escobedo] and, of course, they were having difficulties with their relationship. I said, 'While you are having the difficulty, the kid is sitting out there in limbo so I'll tell you what I'll do, just put the kid in my house until the tour is over with and then we will sort this out later.'"

He continued, "So it took about maybe a year for me to just fall in love and she was a little button, and of course by that time I was Dad and so I said, 'OK, here is what we are going to do: you're going to make everyone wish that they had adopted you. You are going to make everyone in your family wish they actually had a chance to get you back,' and that's when I said, 'Let's adopt her.'"

And from then on she had won his heart. Even during her dark times growing up, he stood by her as only a truly great father could. When she got into trouble with drugs, he gave her some sobering advice and literally stuck by her during her time getting clean.

He said, "I went to her and I said, 'When I was growing up, I lost three friends [to drugs]'… I said, 'It's going to happen to your generation. I don't want you to be in that list of three.' Three months later, her friend died of an overdose, and I went back to her and very quietly, I said, 'I am sorry to hear that, that's one.' And then sure enough, one year later the second one died, and I said, 'That's two,' and I got a phone call and she said, ‘Dad I need help, I don’t want to be the third.'"

His response could not have been more perfect. He said, "I am with you," and he cancelled his tour. He then did something amazing: He and his ex-wife, Nicole's adoptive mother, checked into rehab with her.

The elder Richie sure did make good on his promise to take care of that little girl with the tambourine. What sweet words and what an amazing dad! Nicole Richie is now flourishing with a family of her own and another hit reality TV show.

RHOC's Vicki Gunvalson got attacked by a surprising co-star

It's no secret that King Edmonds and Gunvalson can't stand each other, but now Hayley Edmonds is getting involved in their feud.

When King Edmonds tried to apologize to Gunvalson at a luncheon for implying that her ex might be faking cancer, it did not go over well.

"Don't you ever question if he has cancer or not. I'll take you down," Gunvalson said. "How dare you go there. Is my mother still alive? Guess what, she's dead. Are you going to question that, too?"

Later in the episode, she called King Edmonds "evil" and "classless" — and stepdaughter Hayley was not having it.

This was not the first time the teen has spoken out against her stepmother's nemesis. Just days earlier, she posted another critique.

Gunvalson has not commented on the teen's harsh words, but King Edmonds wrote about the argument with Gunvalson on her Bravo blog.

"Vicki immediately went on the attack and I couldn't get a word in edgewise," she wrote. "Watching this made me ask myself if her style of arguing by throwing jabs is simply a personality flaw and/or a defense mechanism to hide a deeper issue?"

P!nk vs. Demi Lovato: Pop stars' public feud gets dramatic

0

It's pop star versus pop star in the latest celebrity Twitter feud, and this one is all over something as frivolous as the MTV Video Music Awards — and between two such unlikely foes as P!nk and Lovato.

On Sunday night, P!nk reportedly posted some critical comments about the artists and performances at the award show.

"I felt embarrassed and sad. And old. We're getting old," she wrote. "But in all seriousness; I felt sad because music is supposed to inspire. It saved my life. This trash won't save any kids life… In a world that is even scarier and with lives still worth saving, who will stand up and have soul? Disenfranchised to say the least. Let down by my industry and peers. Beside Macklemore and Pharrell and Bieber(pre-sob fest) and The Weeknd, Tori Kelly was dope too. The rest was gross and embarrassing and hard for this aging pop star to believe."

Since the singer pointed out the performers she thought were good, some believed that meant she thought the other performers — like Lovato, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea, Twenty One Pilots and A$AP Rocky — all sucked. And that's where the problems began.

P!nk posted a so-called apology later, which some thought was a backhanded insult to Lovato.

When Lovato caught wind of the comments, she fired back, saying that she has done plenty to help others through her art and that sometimes being frivolous and fun is just fine.

Bring It: Is Coach Dianna being crueler to the girls to up ratings?

0

In the real dance world, coaches are sometimes strict, but rarely outright cruel. But in the world of dance-based television, coaches and teachers begin a series as slightly mean and become crueler as time goes on. Everybody already knows about Abby Lee Miller's favoritism, harsh words and penchant for throwing chairs, but Dianna from Bring It appears to be going in the same direction.

More: Selena Johnson acts more immature than her teenage daughters

Dianna has never exactly had a laid-back personality, but as the pressure piles on and everybody goes after the Dancing Dolls, the coach is starting to take her hard-core form of "motivation" a bit too far. She is coming perilously close to crossing the line, and, arguably, her tactics will only shake the dancers' confidence and make it harder for them to shine as bright as they have in the past.

Just as the ladies of Dance Moms speak out when they think Abby Lee is going over the top, the moms from Bring It have also decided to call Dianna out on her excessive yelling. They think the coach needs to back off a bit and return to the coaching style that worked so well in the past. Their demands really aren't that unreasonable: Stop using the clipboard as a whip, and scale back a bit on the screaming. When Dianna spends a full 20 seconds yelling without taking a breath, she's simply wasting valuable time that could be spent practicing for the next big performance.

There's nothing wrong with a coach calling out her dancers when they act up or fail to put forth sufficient effort. And it's certainly not unusual for coaches to raise their voices, as Coach D has been quick to point out. She believes that, if she goes too soft on the dancers, they'll suddenly transform from athletes to "pansies." However, purposefully trying to scare teenagers so that they play ball is cruel and, arguably, ineffective. There's a difference between respect for and fear of a coach. Dianna should not be striving for the latter option.

Whenever a coach or a teacher on a reality TV series suddenly starts to amp up the yelling, fans begin to question whether her cruelty is really intended as a form of motivation, or rather, a means of giving the show's ratings a boost. Yelling isn't necessarily good for the development of a strong, confident dance team, but it does make for very entertaining television.
