The Mamafesto: What moms need to know about breast milk banks

0
0

Yet there's another option that deserves more attention and support. One that should be available for families who want to feed their babies breast milk but for whatever reason are not breastfeeding or pumping. And that option? Milk banks.

More20 Breathtaking photos to celebrate the beauty & benefits of breastfeeding

Milk banks are centers where people can donate excess breast milk that is strictly screened, processed and stored. Depending on the particular milk bank, the milk then goes to a variety of people but mostly to families who have babies with various challenges (like failure to thrive, allergies, formula intolerance, premature birth, infectious diseases and more). To learn more about how it all happens, I spoke with Naomi Bar-Yam, Ph.D., executive director of Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast, a milk bank located in Massachusetts.

The idea for a milk bank came to Bar-Yam back in 2006. She had emailed colleagues about it, and they met in her living room to discuss making it a reality. In 2008, they moved into a space where they began dispensing milk from another bank, and then started screening their own donors and pasteurizing milk in 2011.

"We are a relatively young milk bank," explains Bar-Yam. "We have only been processing milk for about four years, and we are growing every year. In 2014, we dispensed about 200,000 ounces of milk to hospitals and families throughout the Northeast U.S."

MMBNE is a member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, a national organization that has almost 30 running and developing milk banks throughout the U.S. and Canada. According to Bar-Yam, the entire HMBANA network dispensed 3.77 million ounces in 2014, about a 20 percent increase over the previous year. When it comes to access, Bar-Yam notes that it's about growth and that HMBANA has been growing each year, making it easier for families across North America to access donor milk.

Since not everyone may have a milk bank in their community, there can be a lot of misinformation when it comes to figuring out what they do, exactly. Bar-Yam hopes to clarify some of the misconceptions out there. "People are surprised that we charge fees for milk even though we are nonprofit," Bar-Yam shares. "Most hospitals and universities are also nonprofit and surely charge for their services."

Bar-Yam also wants people to know that they pasteurize the milk that is donated. There's a myth that donated milk might have unknown substances in it, but MMBNE has very specific and strict screening and processing protocols for its milk. They are very careful because they understand the importance of the product they are handling.

"Recent studies have shown that hospitals that use donor milk in the NICUs have increased breastfeeding rates and need less milk over time," explains Bar-Yam. "The message that is sent by using donor human milk is very powerful, and it is an important part of breastfeeding support." The bottom line is that milk banks can be an excellent stopgap for some families or a necessary lifeline for others and need our support.

More: The Mamafesto: 5 Things breastfeeding moms need from the rest of us

Here's how you can help support milk banks, according to Naomi Bar-Yam:

  1. Help us get the word out. Let health care providers, doctors, nurses, lactation consultants, LLL leaders, WIC peer counselors and others who work with expectant and new parents know about donating milk so they can educate their patients and clients.

  1. Get the right info out there! Let them also know that some milk banks also make milk available to moms who are having some trouble with bringing in milk supply. A few bottles of donor milk will help to feed the baby while Mom’s supply comes in.

  1. Let new moms know about milk banks. If a mom has more milk than she needs, she can call the HMBANA milk bank nearest her and ask about donating the milk to help premature, fragile babies in her community. Milk donation should be like blood donation: Not everyone wants to donate, not everyone is eligible, but everyone knows about it. Everyone should know about milk donation too.

Jim Bob, Michelle Duggar's congratulatory video to the Bateses misses the mark

Now, I get it, Jim Bob and Michelle are used to being on a show all about them and their family, talking about themselves. But one of the cardinal rules of someone else's wedding is do not, above all else, steal the spotlight or make it about you and not about the bride and groom.

More: 19 Kids and Counting's Josiah Duggar has a special announcement

On the Duggar family’s website, the three most notable (besides, of course, the now-reclusive Josh Duggar) couples posted videos of congratulations and well wishes to the happy couple.

And while I completely understand they meant well and what Jim Bob and Michelle say isn't bad, they just had to go one step further and bring it back to themselves, ultimately ruining what started out as a perfectly lovely congrats.

Michelle says, "It was the most amazing, precious memory. They are such a sweet couple and you can see the love they have for each other… and we are so excited for their marriage."

Then Jim Bob goes and ruins it.

"You know, it seems like yesterday, Michelle, you and I got married. Thirty-one years ago, and you know what, our love has just grown closer and closer each year."

They were doing so good!

Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck's birthday get-together sounds miserable

The couple hit up what to everyone else in the world is the happiest place on earth, but to them nothing more than a minefield of marital discord, to "celebrate" Affleck's 43rd birthday with their three children. If they were hoping to present a united front for the kids, they failed miserably, onlookers say.

A witness told People the pair had "no interaction at all" and looked "so tense and uncomfortable." Another park visitor noted that Garner's body language made it clear that she wanted nothing to do with her allegedly cheating ex.

"When she was around him, you could see the tenseness," said the source. "Her shoulders would rise up... there was never a point that all of them were really [interacting] together."

The Daily Mail has some photos of the day, and by the look on Garner's face in most of them, it appears Affleck is lucky he made it out of that park alive.

The family also visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando over the weekend, but that trip wasn't much more pleasant.

"Neither of them looked too happy," another onlooker said.

Almost immediately after the couple announced their split, rumors started flying that Affleck cheated on Garner with everyone from Blake Lively to Rosamund Pike to the couple's former nanny, Christine Ouzounian. Affleck adamantly denied the rumors, but judging from these reports, Garner isn't buying it.

Cara Delevingne is rejecting the fashion industry for good

0

In an interview with London-based newspaper The Times, Delevingne exposed the harsh sexual harassment she faced in the fashion industry and vowed never to work in its confines again.

"I am not doing fashion work any more, after having, like, psoriasis and all that stuff," she said. "Modelling just made me feel a bit hollow after a while. It didn’t make me grow at all as a human being. And I kind of forgot how young I was… I felt so old."

The supermodel-turned-actress said she was talked into sexually suggestive poses as a young teen because she felt she couldn't say no and continue to work.

"I am a bit of a feminist and it makes me feel sick," she said. "It's horrible and it's disgusting. [We're talking about] young girls. You start when you are really young and you do, you get subjected to… not great stuff."

The stress, coupled with her demanding schedule, led to various health woes, including psoriasis. "People would put on gloves and not want to touch me because they thought it was, like, leprosy or something," she admitted. "It is a mental thing as well because if you hate yourself and your body and the way you look, it just gets worse and worse."

More: Vogue under fire after calling Cara Delevingne's sexuality a phase

But the fame she earned on the catwalk did give her some power and now she uses it to her advantage — and for the advantage of others, too.

"I am very good at standing up for myself now, and for other people. If there is injustice I will flip out. If someone is crossing a line, they will know about it and so will everyone else."

These days, Delevingne is focusing on her burgeoning acting career instead, starting with her new movie Paper Towns. She is currently filming Suicide Squad with Jared Leto.

Bachelor in Paradise's JJ Lane finally redeems himself

0
0

One of the most interesting things about the current season of Bachelor in Paradise is how easy it is for a cast member to go from good guy to villain and vice versa. Nobody took issue with Joe Bailey on The Bachelorette and now everybody hates him due to his terrible treatment of Juelia Kinney. Conversely, JJ was one of the biggest villains of Kaitlyn Bristowe's season of The Bachelorette, but now fans claim that he's not so bad after all. What gives?

JJ is no longer a villain

JJ once claimed that a villain's gotta vill, but what in the world will he do now that he's no longer a villain? That honor now goes to Joe, who is believed to have used Juelia so that he could meet Samantha — whom he allegedly contacted before he showed up in Paradise.

More: Bachelor in Paradise shows Joe for who he really is — a shallow hypocrite

At first, it looked like JJ had merely passed on the villain torch while still remaining fairly unlikable. That changed during tonight's episode, as JJ went out of his way to confront Joe about his awful behavior. This was thoroughly unexpected, but also a breath of fresh air. Maybe JJ's not so bad after all.

Everybody is still in shock about JJ's unforeseen sense of decency. The Twitterverse had plenty to say about the reality star, with several former haters admitting that they were pleasantly surprised about his willingness to stand up for Juelia. Interestingly enough, the most vocal fans are some of Bachelor Nation's biggest stars.

Jared (who, fortunately, is as charming as ever), summed it up best when he asked, "What planet am I on?" He added that, like fans, he never expected to like JJ better than Joe. It just goes to show that, in Paradise, just about anything can happen!

Fans speculate RHOC's Vicki Gunvalson and Brooks split due to cancer drama

It's always weird to watch a reality show after two of its cast members have decided to go their separate ways. This is especially true for The Real Housewives of Orange County, as Vicki Gunvalson spent the entirety of the latest episode professing her love for Brooks Ayers — and all the while, fans knew that the two would split in just a few short months. Several viewers were quick to point out how weird it was to see Vicki gushing about her love for Brooks in light of the couple's recent breakup announcement.

Could Vicki and Brooks' recent split have something to do with the upcoming episodes of RHOC? Perhaps the reality star is trying to distance herself from her controversial boyfriend? If so, she chose a very interesting time to kick Brooks to the curb, as the timing of the breakup was only bound to call even more attention to the latest Brooks drama on RHOC. Something seems really fishy about all of this, but, of course, Vicki is not ready to enlighten her fans just yet.

Brooks is one shady guy, but it seems difficult to believe that even he would fake cancer. What's the point? Even a cancer diagnosis isn't enough to gain RHOC's top villain any sympathy, as people are determined to hate Brooks, regardless of his current health status. That being said, the timing of Vicki and Brooks' breakup is very, very interesting. There's a good chance that, even if he's being honest about his cancer, Brooks is lying about something else... and that Vicki knows more than she cares to admit.

The Fosters: Maia Mitchell weighs in on the future of Brallie

More: Mariana gets relationship advice from her grandpa in this finale exclusive

We caught up with Maia Mitchell before the finale to talk about what's ahead and what her hopes for Callie's future are. The questions we tossed around most, as fans, this season were whether Callie and Brandon should be together and who/what Callie would choose for her life. Were her feelings for Brandon real? Or was he just a pleasant escape from the craziness of her life?

More: Did the show sacrifice Callie's future for the sake of teaching a lesson?

"I think she really does have true feelings for him. They have a connection that she's never had with anyone. He's kind of the one she really trusts, who has been really there for her," she said. "Obviously, the moms have been there, too. That's why she's been so conflicted by it. But she's a teenager. She's a 16-year-old girl. I guess she's very mature for her age because she's been through a lot... but she's also a teenage girl who is in love with a boy. And there's a lot to be said for that. I think he, when things go bad and turn awry, is kind of a beacon of light."

So, is she really in love?

"I think she's in love with him. I think they're both really in love, whatever that means for a 16-year-old; whether they'll feel the same way about each other when they're in their twenties or thirties, I don't know. But 16-year-old Callie and 16-year-old Brandon — or, I guess, 17 now — definitely are hopelessly in love. And have been, I think, since they met."

Of course, the follow-up question is who would Mitchell choose? Callie has had two significant relationships this half-season — one with AJ and one with Brandon. Who would Mitchell like to see Callie end up with?

"I've been kind of mad at Brandon this season, if I can be honest," she admitted. "I think he's been acting ignorantly. He's been frustrating and competitive and I found myself yelling at the TV screen at Brandon. So, honestly, if I were to pick for Callie, I'd pick Brandon because she's in love with him and he's good for her, I think. But as far as me, I'd go for AJ, for sure. I think Brandon has a lot of growing up to do."

We think they both have growing up to do — and we can't wait to see it in the next half of the season.

6 Mom tasks I refuse to fail at this year

The alternate-universe Chaunie has planned a rotating menu of lunches to ensure that my children will never be bored, researched the hippest trends so my girls will fit right in, purchased the latest in eco and organic lunchware and is fully stocked and ready with loads of lunchbox love notes.

But in reality?

More: Back to school: What moms care about, and what they don't

The real-life Chaunie knows that her back-to-school enthusiasm will fade faster than my attempt at pink highlights. Lunches will be slapped together for whatever the kids will agree to eat, plastic bags will never look better and I'll be lucky to remember a napkin, let alone a carefully penned love note. So instead of getting my hopes up only to fail at yet another motherhood task I'm "supposed" to do, I'm starting out the school year by keeping my expectations nice and low. Allow me to admit right here and right now that I will definitely not be doing any of these things.

1. Spending any brain cells on getting my daughter to eat a variety of lunches

My daughter once handed me — I kid you not — a list of "pre-approved" lunch menu items that included steak, bacon and hamburgers, and I'm still laughing about it. She pretty much refuses to eat any food I pack her, so instead of racking my brain and scouring the ends of the Pinterest-earth to find anything she will eat, I'll be sticking with the basics and hoping her palate eventually catches up with civilization.

2. Printing any love notes

OK, fine, maybe I'll print one. But that's it. If I remember to do it any other day, you had better believe some Sharpie marker and a napkin is as fancy as it's going to get.

3. Buying all-new wardrobes for the kiddos

Hahahaha, what do I look like? A money tree? Hand-me-downs for the win.

4. Attempting to cut anything into any shape other than the way it came

Unless it's looking as nature intended, it's not going into the lunchbox. We do realize that our kids are just going to chew up and swallow these elaborate lunches, right? As in, they are destroyed without so much as a downwards glance in the lunchroom?

5. Pretending to wake up early

You know you always start the school year thinking, "This will be the year I'll get up 15 hours before the kids and work out and make homemade breakfast every.single.morning"? Yeah, I'm just not even going to pretend this time. We all know I'll be snoring until the last possible minute and driving everyone to school with two different shoes on.

If they're lucky.

7 Makeup artist tricks everyone should know

0
0

Makeup is fun. Makeup is beautiful. And believe it or not, makeup can be easy. Most makeup artists achieve some level of success because they have figured out what works, and they stick to it. What this means for the rest of us humans who just want to put something pretty on our faces is: Makeup really isn't that hard, once you figure out what you're doing. With a few interesting tricks in your arsenal, you can look more like JLo and less like a preteen dolled up for the homecoming dance when you leave the house.

1. Apply orange concealer

If you're not going for that just-rolled-out-of-bed death look on Monday morning (and let's be honest, who is?), you may want to laminate celebrity makeup artist Dedra Whitt Dakota's tip and hang it on your mirror. Dakota, founder of the new skin care line dedra beauty, insists that the right shade of concealer is the most important part of your morning makeup routine — especially when you've been tossing and turning all night.

Try it: "Concealer is the most important makeup product for insomniacs because it adds 10 hours of sleep to your appearance. Placement is key, as well as choosing the right color concealer. Because the hue of dark circles is blue, choose a concealer that has a warm (almost has a bit of orange) undertone as it cancels out the blue," she says. "Choose a concealer that is the same color or a shade lighter than your skin tone or foundation. Looking into the mirror, tip your chin down. You will really see where the darkest part of the circle is by doing that. That's where you want to place the concealer. Then blend up from there, into the lash line. That will give you the most bang for your buck and look the most natural."

2. Brush your lips

Come again? It may surprise you to know that one of my favorite things to do when I have down time and am feeling a little dull is to get out my trusty toothbrush and go to town on my lips. First and foremost, brushing your lips feels good. It also exfoliates dead skin that can make your lipstick look cakey and obvious. Last but certainly not least, brushing your lips will allow lip moisturizers to penetrate more deeply — creating the perfect canvas for any color you apply to your pout.

Try it: Brush lips with a soft, moist toothbrush or warm washcloth in a circular motion for two minutes. Slather on your favorite lip balm or moisturizer and allow the product to penetrate. Then apply lip liner and lipstick, with optional gloss, for a flawless finish.

3. Make your own bronzer

With one quick Amazon search, you'll realize there are literally thousands of bronzers to choose from, so you might as well quit while you're ahead. Margina Dennis, celebrity makeup artist who has worked on the beautiful mugs of Lea Michele, Tom Brady (yes, Tom Brady) and more, says that mixing up your own bronzer at home is easy if you have a few key ingredients in your spice cabinet.

Try it: Dennis says, "Cocoa and cinnamon powders mixed together [can] create an emergency bronzer."

More: How to nail the strobing contour trend in 6 simple steps

4. Mix unlikely products

As a wise instructor once told me in beauty school, "Blend, blend, blend is your friend, friend, friend." I have never forgotten this silly little rhyme, which served me surprisingly well in my makeup artist career. When in doubt, blend everything: products, colors, textures and trends. Not only does blending make your makeup application look natural and polished, but it gives you the opportunity to experiment with new colors on the down low.

Try it: Dab a few spots of your favorite trendy lipstick (hot pink or deep red) on the palm of your hand. Blend well with a quarter-sized amount of tinted moisturizer and apply as cream blush. Don't you look fabulous.

5. "Remove" makeup with foundation

This insider makeup artist tip sounds counterintuitive, but soon it will all make sense. Joanna Schlip, Physicians Formula celebrity makeup artist and recent judge on BLUSH: The Search for the Next Great Makeup Artist, tells SheKnows that using foundation as makeup remover (and we use that term loosely here) is one of the best tricks to have up your sleeve when you need to freshen up on the run. Don't remove what you've already applied; just refresh with tinted moisturizer to create a clean slate.

Try it: Schlip explains how to substitute foundation for makeup remover when refreshing your face after work, "If you use makeup remover, it will take away the concealer, foundation and setting powder. Unless you are good at blending, it's going to look like there is a blank spot on your face. Use a moisturizing foundation. Swirl it around and reapply."

6. Sniff rubbing alcohol

There's a strange phenomenon that occurs when you bring a mascara brush or sharp eye pencil anywhere near an unsuspecting eyeball — one eye may go rogue and start to water like a broken fountain. Sensitive, watery eyes make a beautiful eye makeup application damn near impossible, until you discover one of the top celebrity makeup artist's tricks of the trade.

Try it: As Jacqueline Ryan learned when repping celebrity makeup artist clients, "If your eyes tend to water, pour some rubbing alcohol onto a cotton swab and sniff it. It stops your eyes from watering so you can finish doing your eyes without smudges."

7. Use mascara for eyeliner

How many times have I forgotten my eyeliner on a trip or carelessly misplaced it in the abyss that is my purse? Too many to count. Makeup guru Dennis says that the answer to my problem lies right under my nose.

Try it: According to Dennis, "Mascara used with a liner brush can substitute for eyeliner in a fix."

6 Ways you can cheat without even touching someone else

0
0

"Cheating is not only sex," says Tina B. Tessina, Ph.D. (a.k.a. "Dr. Romance"), a psychotherapist and the author of Money, Sex and Kids: Stop Fighting About the Three Things That Can Ruin Your Marriage. "The real thing that upsets the apple cart is betrayal and unfaithfulness. You can easily do that without touching anyone."

Here are six ways you're cheating on your sig-o without any physical contact whatsoever.

1. You're attracted to someone else and compare your partner to him, in a bad way

Look, attraction to other people happens when you're in a committed relationship. That part's totally fine and good and normal. It's what you do with it that matters. If you think another guy is hot and you keep comparing your significant other unfavorably to him, you're not being true to your man.

2. You lie about the important stuff

Whether it's about a friendship you've struck up but choose not to share details of with your sig-o, classes or coaching you're doing for self-improvement purposes, money, work milestones or any other significant occurrences, lying is a form of betrayal to the one you love. Period. So why do it?

3. You spend money you two haven't agreed on

While this might not seem remotely like cheating, if you're spending money behind your partner's back on something he or she doesn't feel comfortable with or doesn't know about, you're not being true.

"Anything that undermines your mutual love and connection is actually betrayal of the faith in your relationship, and therefore, unfaithful," says Tessina.

More: 7 Common couple fights that are completely normal

4. You can't stop thinking about someone else during sex

Fantasizing about someone else during sex with your sig-o is no big deal, once in a while. But it can rise to the level of cheating if you're "imagining sex with another person — the same one — consistently while having sex with your partner," says Jeanette Raymond, Ph.D., a licensed couples therapist and the author of Now You Want Me, Now You Don't!. Ask yourself how you'd feel if he were doing the same thing while having sex with you. Yes. Betrayed.

5. You avoid solving problems together

Whenever you do something to tamper with, weaken or break your connection with your partner — like giving up on solving problems together, as a team — you're not being faithful and you're in essence cheating on him, Tessina says.

6. You're very close to another person who isn't in your immediate group of friends

If you're "enjoying emotional closeness — total emotional nakedness — with another person who isn't a friend in your social circle," that's a form of infidelity, Raymond says. "This other person is the first person you think of talking to because it's more fulfilling than telling your partner." It's so common and so widely considered cheating that it's got a name: an emotional affair. Stop it before it starts if you want to keep your primary relationship healthy and intact.

More: How to know if you should end your relationships or fight for it

All of these examples are "cheating in its broadest context — not just sexual infidelity, but all types of infidelity," says Raymond. And we've only just scratched the surface here; there are plenty of other ways to cheat without touching out there. The lesson to be learned is this: If you're engaging in any behavior that is threatening your love, connection and relationship, or your openness and honesty with each other, it's a betrayal — and betrayal of any kind is cheating, in a sense. So take stock. Try to tackle the issue before it gets out of hand and causes you to lose everything that's important to you that you took for granted when you had it. It's just not worth the risk.

Summer on a plate: Grilled lemon chicken with nectarine-couscous salad

0
0

For this light and fresh meal, I marinated chicken breasts in fresh lemon juice, a few cloves of minced garlic and olive oil. Rather than stand outside in the dreadful Arizona heat, I used my cast-iron grill pan indoors to grill my chicken to juicy perfection (but feel free to fire up your barbecue too).

Serve the grilled chicken alongside a refreshing couscous salad full of juicy nectarines and crunchy vegetables that's tossed in a light, white balsamic dressing. It's summer on a plate.

Grilled lemon chicken with couscous salad recipe

This lemony grilled chicken is served next to a light and fruity nectarine-couscous salad with white balsamic dressing.

Serves 4

Prep time: 20 minutes | Inactive time: 30 minutes | Cook time: 12 minutes | Total time: 1 hour 2 minutes

Ingredients:

For the chicken

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 Meyer lemons, juiced
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the nectarine-couscous salad

  • 1 cup cooked couscous
  • 2 large nectarines, diced
  • 1/4 cup sliced green onions
  • 1/4 small red onion, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup fresh baby spinach
  • 4 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, diced
  • 1 large handful fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup white balsamic dressing or other vinegar-based dressing

Directions:

  1. To a zip-top bag, add the chicken, lemon juice, olive oil and garlic. Shake the bag to evenly coat the chicken, and let it marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or longer.
  2. Heat the grill pan over medium heat, and remove the chicken from the bag. Season with salt and pepper, then place the chicken in the pan, and grill for 5 to 6 minutes per side or until the centers of the chicken breasts are no longer pink.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients for the couscous salad.
  4. Drizzle the balsamic dressing on top, and mix well so that all the ingredients are combined.
  5. Spoon the desired amount of salad onto a plate, and serve with a warm piece of grilled chicken.
  6. Store any remaining salad or chicken in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the refrigerator.

Kim Richards' ex-husband writes cryptic message about her future

The pair, who were only married for three years and split in 1988, have remained close friends, and when Brinson was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he moved back into Richards' home. The couple has a long history together, so it's no surprise that the Real Housewives star's recent reported relapse at her daughter's wedding and shoplifting arrest have done nothing to drive a wedge between them. On the contrary — by the looks of Brinson's latest Instagram post, he is her biggest supporter.

Richards has been acting since she was a baby. Is she planning a non-reality TV comeback following her Sharknado 3 role? Maybe. But first she has a few legal issues to sort out.

More: Bachelor in Paradise shows Joe for who he really is — a shallow hypocrite

Everyone was convinced Joe Bailey was the villain of the household, but the plot thickens. When Joe ditched single mom Juelia Kinney for newcomer Samantha Steffen, fans were shocked. But the latest episode of the show revealed that Steffen and Bailey actually had a secret plan to be together all along — and they were willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish it.

The episode exposed the scheme as cameras caught Samantha coaching Joe on what to say about how they first met, Us Weekly reports. However, Samantha appears to be denying she and Joe had a secret plot, and she's desperately trying to defend herself.

She took to Twitter on Monday to defend herself and apologize to Juelia, informing fans that she was under Joe's spell.

Samantha's blaming everything on Joe and claiming she was under his "spell," but fans are calling her out for it. Especially since Tanner claimed that Joe had shown him screenshots of text messages to him from Samantha.

"Watching Joe take the fall for this is just painful because I know Sam is just as guilty as he is," Tanner confessed. "Before Paradise, Joe sent me a screen grab of a text message from Samantha telling Joe to do whatever it takes to stay in Paradise until she arrived."

12 Truths about rescue dogs every owner understands

0
0

If you've had the pleasure of owning a rescue dog of your own, then you have undoubtedly learned the following truths about these special creatures.

1. They prove that oddball is better

Sure, about 25 percent of shelter and rescue dogs are purebred — but the rest are a delightful mixture of different breeds and their breed-specific characteristics. The result? "Adorkable" oddballs that can capture your heart in an instant.

2. They know how they need you

Look into the eyes of rescue dogs, and you can see that they know. They may not remember everything from their past lives, but they certainly know that they need you and they love you.

3. They're surprisingly easy on your house

Many rescue dogs are already house-trained and well-behaved, so you don't have to worry too much about your rescue dog destroying your custom leather couch.

4. They know the pleasure of a good walk

Most dogs — rescued or not — enjoy a nice afternoon stroll. But there's something about the way a rescue dog holds its tail high that demonstrates just how much it loves the freedom of a walk and the freshness of the air.

5. Their gratitude is evident

Watch the slow tail-wag of a rescue dog when you feed it or pet it gently on the head. It's as though its whole demeanor is oriented toward telling you, "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

6. They're a steal of a deal

Forget shelling out hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a commercially purchased animal. You can get a rescue dog for just the cost of his or her start-up vet bill, depending on the shelter or rescue group you choose.

7. They're good for your soul

Have you ever noticed how good you feel after a cuddle session with a quirky, loving rescue dog? There's science behind those good feelings that churn in your soul. A good relationship with a loving rescue dog can trigger a biochemical reaction in your body that reduces stress and improves feelings of well-being.

8. Old dogs can learn new tricks

Even middle-aged and old dogs can learn a new trick or two. It all comes down to the attitude of the owner and the mutuality of the relationship.

9. They come with a clean bill of health

Surprisingly, health is a wonderful benefit of selecting a rescue dog. Most rescue groups require dogs to have a clean bill of health, including a spay or neuter and all necessary shots and preventative medicines, before the dog can ever go home with you.

10. They are delightfully quirky

Rescue dogs sometimes pick up the weirdest habits. And you know what? Quirkiness can make for the best kind of pet.

11. They never forget

Here's one that makes me cry when I think about it. I rescued my mutt, Radar, from a kill shelter when he was just a puppy — but my ex-husband got him in the divorce. I seldom see Radar anymore but when I do, he leaps at me just like he did the day I opened his door to the cage at the shelter. A rescue dog never forgets that you saved him or her.

12. Saving a life is a win-win

Yes, you saved your rescue dog's life. But you know that he or she is also saving yours, each and every day.

Azealia Banks predicts sexual assault of Nicki Minaj's wax figure (PHOTOS)

The "Anaconda" singer was honored by Madame Tussauds in Las Vegas with her own mannequin and it is posed very provocatively in a scene from the star's famous butt-loving video. But as Azealia Banks pointed out, other female singers are posed in non-sexual positions with microphones in their hands and Minaj's position will only result in further degradation by fans.

Talking to kids about weight: 6 Dos and don'ts for moms

0
0

In fact, kids are dealing with pressures and insecurities about their bodies even when parents can't see it. A recent study by Common Sense Media found that more than half of girls and one-third of boys ages 6 to 8 think their ideal weight is thinner than their current size. Even more disturbing is the fact that by age 7, one in four kids has engaged in some sort of dieting behavior.

More: Does your kid have an eating disorder?

Despite our best efforts, kids notice our cultural obsession with weight. If we want to keep them from experimenting with dangerous diets or taking bad advice, it's imperative that we open the lines of communication and teach them how to cultivate a healthy lifestyle. Most of us are not child health experts and have no idea how to go about this, so SheKnows sat down with a professional to get some advice.

Kristi King is a senior clinical dietitian at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas. She counsels children and families every day on the sensitive subjects of diet, health and weight management, and she provided some helpful dos and don'ts to help parents start a productive conversation. Here are some of the useful tips she offers parents on how to broach the weight discussion.

how to talk to kids about weight

Image: Becci Burkhart/SheKnows

Do: Focus on your child's health instead of his weight

Rather than sitting down with your child to have a conversation about the size of his body, aim for a discussion of his lifestyle, activity levels and eating habits. Take care to dispel the notion that body size is the most important thing because that can be counterproductive. "We want to take the focus off weight and appearance and make the focus about health," says King. "Because ultimately that's what we're aiming for."

Don't: Ignore your child's feelings

Children are complex people with their own thoughts and emotions, and it's important to treat them that way. King says the best way to do this is to ask open-ended questions and be ready to listen — actively listen — to what your child is thinking and feeling about her body. Then use her thoughts and feelings to guide the conversation.

Don't: Allow negative self-talk

This goes for your child and for you. "Children learn from role modeling," says King. "So if mom is saying, 'Oh, I hate the way my thighs look,' young girls and boys will pick up on that." Keep your child focused on setting positive goals instead of focusing on what she doesn't like about herself and reassure her that she has great qualities that have nothing to do with weight. Says King: "It sounds kind of simple and intuitive, but really reassure them that they're loved and point out those good qualities on a regular basis."

Do: Lead by example

Use role modeling to your advantage. Commit to giving your child concrete examples of moderation, healthy eating and an active lifestyle that he can look to as inspiration. Instead of listing off things he should avoid, King says, "Focus on the 'do.'" Give kids ideas and suggestions, like inviting them on a walk instead of harping on them about sitting on the couch.

Don't: Expect them to do it on their own

Living a healthy lifestyle is easier when you have someone to hold you accountable. Instead of setting goals only for your child, vow to make it a family affair. "If you use the word 'we,' it tends to work a lot better than making it a 'you' thing," says King. "It's just like adults. I do better if I have someone to go to the gym with who holds me accountable. This way there's accountability from parent to child and child to parent to commit to healthy goals."

Do: Give kids the tools to get and stay healthy

If your children are concerned about their diet, make plans to get them into the kitchen and grocery store so they can learn what healthy eating looks like. King says kids often head off to college having never grocery shopped or helped prepare a family meal. That sets them up to struggle as they attempt to manage their health as an adult. Getting kids involved in food prep helps them appreciate where food comes from, teaches portion control and gives them a sense of ownership over what they're eating so they'll be more likely to make positive choices.

Scream star teases Season 2 and how it won't be like AHS

0
0

Taylor-Klaus reassured us that Season 1 will be wrapped up, but not before setting up what's going to happen next year.

More: Scream's renewal basically kills all Season 1 anticipation

"It's not going to be like American Horror Story," she said. "It's gonna have the same cast, the same characters — or whoever's alive at the end of the season — going into the next season. There's definitely more to the story."

So fear not, Scream fans, you will be seeing at least some of your favorite characters back next season, though how many that will be is still anyone's guess. Of course, all the Audrey lovers out there want to know if she will be back, and while we still don't know the answer to that question, we do know that some big things are coming for her in the final episodes of the season.

"There's a lot going on with everybody, but definitely with Audrey after that whole anger video came out," Taylor-Klaus teased about the end of the season. "It's going to take a second for her to reconnect with Noah, but she seems to have kind of solidified her bond with Emma," she said, adding that the strengthened friendship between the two characters would be pivotal to the final episodes of this season.

More: Scream: How Emma, Aubrey and the gang perfectly nail female friendships

Taylor-Klaus has become known for playing characters who are very protective of those they love, including Audrey and her character on The Killing, Bullet. Is it a coincidence that she has played such similar roles or is she drawn to them for a particular reason? Taylor-Klaus said it was a little bit of both.

"Well, I'm actually a lot like [them]," she revealed. "It happens to be mostly a coincidence, but it makes sense because I'm a lot like that in real life and also I like characters that have darkness and passion and both those characters do."

We've seen that Audrey's passions have gotten her into a pickle, which is a trait Taylor-Klaus revealed she shares with the character. "I share that a little bit — my passions do definitely get me into trouble sometimes."

Displaying strength of character both onscreen and off, it might come as a surprise to learn that Taylor-Klaus was once the victim of bullying. But it was that experience when she was younger that led her to get involved with the No Bull Nation program.

"I love what they're doing," she said about the program. "I love the premise. I love everything that they've done so far and I really want to be more a part of it, because I got bullied when I was younger, I'm not going to lie."

Taylor-Klaus feels it's important that bullying stop happening. "Yeah, there are those people who say, 'It builds character and it made you who you are,' but that's not a fun way to become who you are," she said.

It's one of the many reasons she's happy to be a part of a show like Scream, which has craftily combined messages about bullying into a horror TV show. "That's another thing I love about Scream is that it's not shoving it in your face going, 'Hey! We're teaching you a lesson right now.'"

Another program that she's been a part of is Outward Bound, which she said was an incredible experience. "I met fantastic people and I spent 19 days without a phone, without electronics, literally just going. It was spectacular."

The program, which sends people on outdoor adventures as a way to learn more about themselves, also taught Taylor-Klaus some important lessons about how to treat the environment. "It was really interesting because part of Outward Bound is leave nothing behind, leave no trace," she said. "So we would cook for ourselves and clean up after ourselves. And when we cleaned up after ourselves, we cleaned up. We had to take everything with us when we left. We couldn't leave anything. Nothing. Nothing at all. It was a beautiful experience."

Through all of her work with various programs and charities, plus playing such strong characters, it's easy to wonder if Taylor-Klaus feels a responsibility to be a role model for her generation. But for her, it goes much deeper than that.

More: Scream: Why Brandon James is not the killer we thought he was

"I'm not sure if it's a sense of responsibility. I want to leave the world a better place after I'm gone than it was when I came in. There was a story I heard growing up about the old man who planted a tree and people laughed at him because they were like, 'That tree is never going to bear fruit in your lifetime,' and he said, 'I don't care, it's for my kids.' I think that's a concept that kind of stuck with me. Even if I never have children, it's for the next generation."

Face Off's shocking twist led to another double elimination (PHOTOS)

Before getting to the grit of this big twist, let us rewind to last week, where we were left with four contestants facing elimination in the "to be continued" 100th episode. Jason, Missy, Meg and Nora were all on the chopping block for their poorly received undead engaged couples. To refresh your memory, here’s a look at those finished makeups again.

"There was a lot that went wrong with both of your characters," judge Glenn Hetrick said. "Two of the biggest missteps were your muddy paint job and the poorly executed bone shoulder."

Missy was openly disappointed as she fought tears away. "I still have a lot more to show. I still have a lot more to prove. I need to keep my mind open."

First individual face off

Now back to the Focus challenge twist. What exactly is it? "Focus challenges are similar to Spotlight challenges, but they require you to focus your efforts on the most important part of any successful makeup: the face," host McKenzie Westmore told the contestants, who were excitedly shocked by the news. "Because the scope of your work has been limited, you’ll only have two days to complete your Focus challenge. With this focus on the face comes a more stringent judging criteria. The judges want to see attention to detail, which means clean makeups with great edges, great blending and great painting."

Final 13 Face Off contestants

This first Focus challenge also brought the first opportunity so far this season for the contestants to compete individually. Their task was to create a protagonist character in a mash-up theme combining classic literature and horror in the same vein as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter or Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

How did they do? Here’s a closer look at each finished makeup, where they ranked and the mash-up theme each contestant selected.

Best of the best

The following makeups were labeled as the "top looks" of the challenge.

Scott: Don Quixote — Monster of La Mancha

He wanted to make it look as if his creature was created from the parts of dead workers, much like Frankenstein. "There's a strong understanding of anatomy and anatomy that's been afflicted," judge Neville Page said. "Brilliant." For those reasons, the judges named Scott as the overall challenge winner.

Jasmine: Sherlock Holmes — Bloodsucker

Her creation was Sherlock's vampire daughter who has taken over his investigations. "It's well applied. It's beautiful far away — and it's even better up close," judge Ve Neill said.

Glenn said she accomplished all the goals of the challenge "exceedingly well."

At risk for elimination

The following makeups were labeled as the "bottom looks" of the challenge.

Meg: The Scarlet Letter — Puritan Poltergeist

"I am distraught. I just know that this is not gonna go over well," Meg said before presenting her finished makeup to the judges. Her fears were right.

A close look at Meg Wilbur's finished makeup

"It looks very bizarre to me," Ve said. "It's a poor sculpt. It's a poor paint job. There's just so many things that have gone wrong for you this week."

Jason: The Scarlet Letter — Puritan Poltergeist

"I don't think she looks demonic," Ve said. "I don't think she looks childlike. I think she looks like a weird vegetable that's pink and purple. I don't know how these furrows in her skin look demonic in any way."

Brittany: Great Expectations of a Serial Killer

The judges felt as if she bit off way too much for this challenge by trying to do a burn and old-age makeup mixed in one character. "You just tried to do something too big and too difficult for this challenge, and it showed in the final results," Glenn said.

In the end, Brittany was booted from the competition. "I'm going out on a makeup that I'm not proud of, but I'm just so very thankful to have been here. I have learned so much, and I hope to have a long career here in Hollywood."
