More: Lamar Odom may be mad at Khloé Kardashian over ridiculous divorce settlement

While the Kardashian clan is off on what looks like a dream vacation in St. Barts, they've been keeping their fans around the world updated with snap after beautiful snap of their activities on social media. And thanks to one photo, posted by Khloé Kardashian on Monday, we know exactly how hard little Nori can party.

The photo shows North West, 2-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, holding up a drink and rocking a grown-up's pair of crooked sunglasses, captioned simply "MOOD."

Is it a party foul to wear those shades so off-center? We're going to go with no, just because she's so darn cute. With Kim K. currently expecting her second child, we can rest easy knowing the Kardashian-West family's new arrival will have a role model to show him how to party like a pro.

The other Kardashian ladies have been hamming it up just as hard in front of Khloé's camera. We can't help but browse her Instagram and be totally jealous of all the fun they're having on vacation.

The highly anticipated DC flick already has a ringing endorsement — from its cast, who revealed on Twitter today that they did something surprisingly permanent in support of the project.

From the photos they've been posting, it looks like several of the cast members have given each other matching tattoos that read "SKWAD." #skwadgoals, anyone?

In one photo, actress Margot Robbie, completely decked out as her character, Harley Quinn, is working the gun, presumably on a forearm tat for director David Ayer, since the photo was posted to his Twitter account.

"Got my #skwad tattoo:) Will has many many talents, tattooing is not one of them. It was like watching a drunk baby fly a helicopter. #suicidesquad #willsmith #harleystattooparlour," Kinnaman captioned the pic of himself and Smith, all smiles, after the ink sesh.

Even Jai Courtney is getting in on it, with a small, scribbled "SKWAD" on what looks like his wrist.

None of the tattoos are particularly small, so while we admire the cast's dedication and their obvious bond from working on Suicide Squad together, we can't help but hope, for all their sakes, the movie turns out as good as everyone seems to expect.

RHONY's Sonja Morgan disrespects John F. Kennedy Jr.'s memory

Remember way back near the beginning of RHONY Season 7 when Sonja Morgan claimed that she used to party with John F. Kennedy Jr.? Nobody believed her at the time, but there was enough other drama going on that most people didn't bother to question her too much. That all changed during tonight's reunion, when the gals discussed Sonja's earlier JFK Jr. name-dropping at length. Did Sonja actually hang out with JFK Jr.? Or did she make up the entire story in order to impress others?

More: Bethenny Frankel blamed Andy Cohen for her failed marriage

After Andy Cohen brought up the old "John-John" issue, Carole — who actually knew John F. Kennedy Jr. — made a good point: None of JFK Jr.'s real friends referred to him as "John-John." This was merely a moniker used as a slight against a guy who, according to the tabloids, was nothing more than a huge party animal. Sonja may have read plenty of tabloid stories about JFK Jr., but that doesn't mean that she was his best bud.

More: Sonja Morgan's model body-shaming was cruel and unnecessary

Carole and Twitter think Sonja is full of it

Sonja hasn't received a ton of Twitter support these past few weeks, in part because she body-shamed a gorgeous model who allegedly lacked a defined waist. Tonight, the reality star attracted even more criticism than usual, with most RHONY fans agreeing that her story about "John-John" was dubious, at best.

Sonja hallucination

Sonja hallucination

Pretty much everybody agrees that Sonja is making things up or, at a minimum, exaggerating her relationship with "John-John." But what fans of RHONY can't figure out is why she's so intent on talking about the guy like he was her friend and her friend only. In doing so, she's distorting his legacy, disrespecting his memory and hurting those he left behind.

More: Ramona Singer's new beginnings party is pure narcissism

It would have been nice to see Sonja actually own up to her mistake and apologize, but instead, she merely dug a deeper hole for herself. Contrition simply isn't Sonja's style, which is too bad — she could have repaired a lot of the damage by simply owning up to her tendency to exaggerate.

Fans upset that Dance Moms' leader Abby Lee Miller might abandon her team

Tonight's Dance Moms reunion was, as expected, full of drama. But while the usual catfights took center stage, even more of the intrigue centered around Abby Lee Miller's future plans. The reality star has hinted at the possibility of ditching the show or, at least, ditching her beloved junior elite team. After all, as she's quick to point out, most of the gals are no longer able to compete at the junior level in competitions — they're teenagers!

More: Abby Lee Miller hit an all-time low encouraging shameful behavior

A whole new team?

While it's true that Dance Moms could use a little freshening up, Abby's hints at the reunion made it sound like she is considering the possibility of completely revamping the team that brought her so much fame. Knowing Abby, any new team would surely include golden child Maddie and her little sister Mack Z. Beyond that, it's hard to say what will happen.

It's no secret that Abby is not getting along with Nia and Kalani these days — and she certainly wasn't afraid to trash JoJo (and her father) during the reunion. As such, it's not hard to imagine Abby creating a new team largely based around the Ziegler children. Of course, knowing how much fans adore Nia and JoJo, this could be a ratings catastrophe.

More: Abby Lee Miller's recent weight loss has angered many fans

Dance Moms fans clearly do not like the idea of a new junior elite team. Many panicked at the mere thought of saying goodbye to their favorites. Several fans expressed their desire for more from the current team on Twitter.

It's hard to say what's going through that crazy head of Abby's, but clearly she's had enough of the current setup. If nothing else, fans can expect to see at least one new dancer join the ranks for the next season of Dance Moms, as rumors indicate that Lifetime is on the hunt for a new reality star. Whether that newbie will join a teenage version of the junior elite team or a completely different group of dancers remains to be seen.

Emergency C-section scar photo shows beauty of caesarean births

However a stunning image by Guernsey-based photographer Helen Carmina is making people rethink their C-section views — and it's about time.

Carmina — who is due to give birth herself any day now — admits that she had no idea the photograph, shared on her Facebook page, would attract so much attention.

More: Are "gentle C-sections" the new trend when it comes to birth options?

It's easy to see why it has. It's an intimate, beautiful, inspiring picture that perfectly encapsulates what a C-section birth is.

As a mum who has given birth by C-section I consider myself more than qualified to give my opinion on this. (If you haven't, then sorry, but you just aren't.) My C-section was planned — not an emergency Caesarean like the mother in the photo had — so I had time to prepare myself for it. Even so I was just as anxious as I was in the lead-up to my other birth experience, which happened to be a vaginal delivery.

It's impossible to compare the two experiences but what I can say is this: for all their differences, they were both challenging, painful, at times traumatic, completely surreal and, above all, life-affirming.

After my C-section I was fascinated with my scar. At first I was scared to look at it. (I imagined a gaping wound, oozing with all sorts of unspeakable substances.) Gradually I took pride in watching it heal, while marvelling that this was the opening through which my daughter entered the world. Even when it brought tears to my eyes — if I moved too quickly, or sneezed, or laughed, or coughed — I felt empowered, knowing that this pain had a purpose. For me the best purpose in the world.

Images like Helen Carmina's are so encouraging to new mothers who have to give birth by emergency section. It's not the birth experience they would have hoped for and it's one that requires great strength — mental as well as physical.

However a woman gives birth it's not a gentle experience. In many cases it leaves scars. Mums should wear those scars with pride.

Man who posted 'revenge porn' images of his wife on Facebook escapes jail

As reported in The Independent, David Honeybell, 49, sought revenge after discovering his wife Sarah was having an affair. As well as posting the private images online he threatened to send them to her employer. He also burned a pile of her clothes.

New laws brought into force in spring mean those found guilty of “disclosing private sexual photographs and films with an intent to cause distress” will face a maximum prison sentence of up to two years. However Honeybell pleaded guilty to a less serious offence of harassment, as well as arson, and avoided a custodial sentence.

More: Australia should be doing more to stop revenge porn

Honeybell, who represented himself in court, admitted harassing his wife by sending her 18 text messages and leaving her six voicemail messages on June 16, telling the judge: “I am sorry. I was upset that after 23 years of marriage my wife was having an affair.” He also told the court he now accepted that his marriage was over.

He was given a 12-month community order and a restraining order, as well as a total of £325 in fines and costs.

It’s not clear why Honeybell wasn’t charged with the offence of revenge porn and cases like this provide little reassurance to victims.

In Revenge Porn, a Channel 4 documentary which aired this week, several women who have been the victims of revenge porn spoke to presenter Anna Richardson about how it affected them.

One woman, whose photos were viewed multiple times, said it made her feel as if she had been “abused 30,000 times.” Another said she felt “ill” when she discovered naked images of herself on the Internet.

A woman named Laura revealed that she didn’t want to send her ex-partner topless photos of herself but “went along with it” because she “wanted to make him happy.”

Richardson posted images of herself online to see what response they would get and was horrified when reading some of the comments, ranging from "Ooh, I'd tap that" to "I want to rape you now."

When she took the evidence to the police they told her that, because she consented to having the photos taken in the first place, she was to blame. "It made me feel abused, abused, abused," she said. "When I went to the police, they told me it was my fault because I consented to take the pictures. It was my fault."

Let’s hope that the government’s crackdown on revenge porn — Honeybell’s case aside — goes some way to cut down on the distribution of private sexual images of someone without their consent. 17 Things couples learn after doing house renovations

$

Except that it's not at all. It's like a confusing journey through all nine circles of hell. The only difference? It ends with some new granite counter tops and a neat-o lazy Susan cabinet insert. Worth it.

If you manage to survive the renovation experience with your darling, however, you will undoubtedly emerge with the following relationship wisdom. 'Tis worth its weight in travertine backsplash tiles.

1. Pick your battles wisely

The shade of laminate matters not, as long as you get to select the new cabinetry.

2. Treat problems as an adventure, not an intrusion

Problems will undoubtedly arise during the remodel. Remember that these problems can constitute a complete emergency or just another bend in the road. It all comes down to attitude.

3. The only taste he has is in picking you

Do not expect your partner to have reasonable taste. You should know better by now.

4. Flexibility is happiness

The happiest of trees are those that can bend in the wind, rather than snap.

More: The best marriage advice from those who've succeeded — and failed

5. People handle stress differently

Just because you feel like screaming and he feels like escaping, it doesn't mean you're not both stressing out. Be kind.

6. A date night can fix a million problems

Water line burst? Fireplace exploded through the rooftop? Walls held together by only a very aggressive species of mold? Fix that ish with a date night, and you'll feel better.

7. Asking questions can be perilous

Dear friend, do not interrupt his train of thought with an unnecessary question.

8. A renovation is a magnifying glass for pre-existing issues

Remember that you're not actually arguing about the renovation. You're arguing about communication, or budgeting or stress management. These are pre-existing issues in your relationship. As they arise, recall that the renovation is helping you see your weaknesses so you can address them.

9. "Budget" means different things to different people

Do you think of your budget as gospel, or more of a guideline? Always make sure you know exactly what you mean by the word "budget."

10. Hash it out ahead of time

Arguing must occur with a reasonable expectation of privacy, and not in front of the contractor, the children or the staff of the local hardware store.

11. Opposites attract

Remember that you fell in love with your partner for precisely the reasons he makes you want to jump out of a window sometimes.

More: The caveat to dating your polar opposite

12. A rock-solid plan is the most important ingredient...

Think things through ahead of time, always.

13. ... And so is mutual buy-in

But as you're thinking things through, make sure you're both on the same page. One person's well-contrived plan does not turn into success without mutuality.

14. Divorce is more expensive than outsourcing

Sure, you could DIY everything. The money you save on contractor fees will help you afford that divorce you'll certainly want at the end of all those projects.

15. Know when to leave the house

Ignoring problems isn't a good thing, but it's perfectly acceptable to walk away from them for short periods of time if you just can't bear to deal with them.

16. Compromise is king

There's an old adage that rings true: "You can be right, or you can be happy." Know when compromise is the highest good.

17. It's a journey, not a destination

The destination of a house remodel is a nice goal. The journey you take to attain your goals with your partner, however, is what makes your house a home.

'Super lice' pop up in 25 states: Is yours on the list?

$

0

Here's what you need to know about the unwelcome friends your child might be bringing home from school this year: Just like a low-budget sci-fi movie, a new ultra-strain of lice has become resistant to most commercial lice shampoos. TODAY reports that lice and other bugs are growing resistant to the active ingredients found in most OTC treatments, called pyrethroids. In a new study, Kyong Yoon, assistant professor at Southern Illinois University — Edwardsville, and his research team reported 104 lice populations with high levels of genetic mutations among the 109 lice populations collected at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society.

More: What your kid's back-to-school supply list should say (but won't)

Resistant lice have been found in at least 25 states, and several other states have a few mutated strains. As for the rest of the country, researchers either haven't analyzed the data or have not tested the states yet — which means, Teenage Mutant Ninja Lice are probably coming to a school near you.

Here are the states with confirmed populations of 100 percent resistant "super lice" — gulp:

  1. Alabama
  2. Arizona
  3. Arkansas
  4. California
  5. Connecticut
  6. Florida
  7. Georgia
  8. Illinois
  9. Indiana
  10. Kansas
  11. Kentucky
  12. Maine
  13. Maryland
  14. Massachusetts
  15. Minnesota
  16. Missouri
  17. North Carolina
  18. Ohio
  19. Rhode Island
  20. South Carolina
  21. Tennessee
  22. Texas
  23. Virginia
  24. Washington
  25. Wisconsin

If you ever had the pleasure of having lice as a kid, or if your child has brought the little buggers home from school, then you know what a living nightmare it is to deal with regular lice. You have to quarantine, comb hair, apply smelly shampoo, wash everything, throw away stuffed animals and ultimately consider burning your house down so that you don't have to deal with the hassle of it all. Lice are the worst, and this isn't even taking into account the new super lice that will laugh in the face of OTC shampoo.

More: Lice! Now what?

Logically, it would make sense to just use a stronger chemical shampoo to get rid of super lice, but this theory has a few problems. Not only is there the possibility that lice can grow even stronger to resist stronger chemicals (meaning they will soon take over the world), but we're talking about putting these extra-strong chemicals on the sensitive scalps of young children.

Before it even gets to the quarantine phase, there are two things you can do to head off the super lice invading America: prevent and contain.

Lice prevention

Lice prevention starts far before you get that dreaded lice letter sent home from school. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, here are the best early lice prevention tips every family needs to know:

  • Teach your child not to share — sharing toys is still kosher, but passing around personal belongings like hats, pillows and earbuds at school is an absolute no-no.
  • Teach your child to steer clear of lice "hot zones" — lice-friendly beds, couches, pillows and rugs in public places should be avoided.
  • Check hair regularly — preferably using a comb and a bright light after a bath, every night before bed.
  • Inspect, inspect, inspect — check clothing, towels, rugs, bedding and other household items that are easily infested for signs of lice and nits.

More: So, you got the head lice memo: What now?

Lice containment

Even when your child comes home scratching their head, it's not too late. If you jump at the first sign of an itch — and do the dirty work by cleansing your home — you can contain super lice before they spread to friends and family. In the Pharmacist's Guide to Controlling Head Lice, The National Pediculosis Association recommends containing lice before resorting to the use of chemicals (that might not work anyway):

  • Wash everything in hot water and dry in a hot dryer — like clothes, sheets, stuffed toys and any other household items that may have been exposed.
  • Vacuum everything in sight that can't be washed or dry-cleaned — vacuuming is the safest and most effective lice control alternative to spraying a home with pesticides.
  • Avoid bagging clothes and toys — vacuuming is far more effective and less traumatic for young children who have lice.
  • Try manual lice removal first — nit-picking wet hair is safer and gentler than chemical lice treatment.

More: Home lice treatment ends tragically with a child’s death

You can still try an over-the-counter treatment to deal with the super lice your kids might bring home from school, but if the lice are resistant, there's no guarantee OTC shampoos will work. In that case, it's recommended to see your pediatrician right away instead of trying one chemical treatment after another. Repeat chemical treatments can be potentially dangerous to kids and are only recommended 10 days apart. A pediatrician can prescribe a medicated treatment that super lice may not be resistant to yet.

At the end of the day, when you've tried everything and have spent hours ridding your home of the lice that refuse to die, you can comfort yourself with one all-important fact: Experts agree that having lice doesn't mean a child is "dirty." Kids are most likely to spread lice around, but anyone with hair can get them.

Subway suspended its relationship with Fogle in July after the FBI raided his Zionsville home. The raid came a few months after an employee of Fogle's charitable foundation was arrested on child pornography charges and allegedly found to have over 400 videos of child pornography in his possession. Subway claims it knew nothing about the allegations against Fogle and have pretty much erased every mention of him from their website and branding material. — Yahoo

5. Something special for the ladies

Yesterday, the FDA approved Addyi, which is the first approved prescription drug to boost female libido. The FDA previously rejected Addyi twice over concerns about the drug's side effects, which include lovely things like low blood pressure, fainting, nausea and dizziness, especially when paired with alcohol. The drug works by changing the balance of chemicals in the brain to increase arousal, and women who took it in clinical trials had — on average — one additional "satisfying sexual experience" per month. No word yet on whether the same results could be achieved with regular viewings of Magic Mike XXL. — The New York Times

Mayberry took to Twitter earlier this week to expose the misogynistic online abuse she has received on a 4chan thread, which all started because of her appearance in the video.

Some of the comments on the thread refer to Mayberry as a "slut" and a "hypocrite," make crude sexual references and grossly objectify her.

While many of the comments are too disgusting to post, two of the tamer remarks read: "I thought Lavren [sic] was pure, why did she agree to dress like a slut?" and "Feminists are always the biggest sluts."

Mayberry's fans have reacted in disgust and taken to Twitter to show their support for her.

Unfortunately Mayberry is far from the only woman — or man — to have been objectified or spoken to like this. Sexism has become so commonplace in society that women are often just expected to accept it and move on but, by calling out those responsible, the "We Sink" hitmaker is bringing awareness to the issue.

Perhaps Mayberry put it best herself during a 2013 interview with The Guardian, when she discussed how she is unwilling to accept online misogyny.

"It seems almost too obvious to ask, 'Would you condone this behaviour if it was directed at your mother/sister/daughter/wife/girlfriend?' but maybe going back to basics is what the trolls or 4chan addicts need. To learn a little empathy. To have a little respect for other people. To think before they speak," she told the publication.

Boy George slated The Voice two years ago — now he's a coach

Unfortunately for Boy George, the recent news of his new role as a coach on The Voice has been tainted somewhat by the revelation that, two years ago, he was less than complimentary about the show that will be paying his (no doubt substantial) wages for several months.

The Culture Club frontman publicly announced that he was "thrilled" to be joining the programme but fans have pointed out that he used to hate the show, reports The Mirror.

After watching The Voice in 2013 Boy George, 54, tweeted: "The Voice, it’s a TV show and these pointless vocal battles are proof that it’s nothing to do with creativity or growing! It’s drama!”

After the tweet was brought to the attention of The Voice bosses they responded publicly on their own Twitter account, posting: "Thanks for watching." Boy George replied: "Well, I am paying for it!"

Shortly afterwards one of Boy George's Twitter followers joined in the conversation, commenting: "You didn’t get asked to be a judge then?"

The singer hit back: "Yeah, consider yourself judged and blocked!"

Since his role on The Voice was announced a few days ago the "Karma Chameleon" hitmaker has received a mixed response from Twitter users (and has yet again been making good use of the "block" button).

In response to messages of encouragement from fans, he tweeted: "Ha. Don't confuse and handful of 'naysayers' with a sea of love! :) (sic)"

More: Jamie Oliver gushes about family but women are judged for doing the same

Boy George is taking over from Tom Jones on the show, with the Welshman wasting no time in making it clear that he was rather unceremoniously dumped from the panel and, to make matters worse, he only found out he was being let go on the same day as his replacement was announced.

“It’s not that I was let go, it is how it was handled,” he told The Mirror. “If indeed the producers were planning a cast change back in March/April, after the most successful year of the series in terms of viewer numbers, a warm and civilised conversation was in order at that time. We would have been mutually appreciative for what we did for each other over the last four years. That the executives in charge couldn’t be ladies and gentlemen about it, that they were filled with paranoia about a ‘leak’ above all, is deeply insulting to our professionalism.”

More: New report claims Teresa Giudice's found a way to make crime pay, big time

According to People, the teen was arrested this past weekend after she threw a house party at her family's home in New Canaan, Connecticut, while her parents were out of town. But the house party is not the problem — the problem is that she reportedly supplied alcohol to her underage guests.

Georgia is facing charges from New Canaan police for permitting minors to possess alcohol and procuring alcohol for minors, NBC New York reports.

According to the publication, on Saturday, Aug. 15, about 1 a.m., someone called the police to report that underage drinking was taking place at the Connick family home. When police arrived at the scene, they reportedly discovered several teens trying to flee the party and escape through the woods. However, 15 guests, who were between the ages of 18 and 20, remained at the scene while police called their parents.

Police also say they found empty and partially empty beer cans at the house, NBC reports. Georgia told police that she had only intended to have a small gathering of friends, but many uninvited guests had turned up.

This mac and cheese, however, is a one-pot wonder. Not only is it made all in one skillet, but it's creamy, cheesy and everything you want in mac and cheese. The secret? Cream cheese. No grating required, yet the perfect ingredient to get a super-decadent and creamy pot of mac and cheese. This version uses spicy sausage and chipotle peppers, but feel free to use sweet sausage if you're not as into spice. Either way, this is a meal everyone will love.

11 Tasty noodle substitutes you might like even better than pasta

$
0
0

I've been eating low carb (in a clean-eating, Paleo kind of way) for about two years. I'm getting to the point where my body has adjusted, and I don't have as many uncontrollable carb cravings as I used to. But there's only so much kale you can eat before you want to bang your head against a wall.

There has got to be a better way — and there is.

I've learned the hard way that the only way to successfully stick to a healthy diet is by being creative (and by cheating in moderation). If a single tear rolls down your cheek every time you drive past an Italian restaurant, not to fear. Dieting isn't all about deprivation. Pasta may be off the table, but these tasty spaghetti swaps can almost help you forget you're playing the low-carb game.

Here's all the proof you need that you can have your spaghetti and eat it too:

1. Black bean pasta

Black bean pasta

Image: Taste with the Eyes

Black bean pasta is the ultra-convenient, uber-delicious, gluten-free, low-carb dish you've been waiting for (try saying that three times fast). You can buy packaged black bean spaghetti at Whole Foods and dress it up with some garlic, soy sauce, fish sauce and brown sugar when you get home.

More: Low-carb gooey skillet brownie for two

2. Cabbage noodles

Cabbage noodles

Image: Empowered Sustenance

This pasta variation may sound strange, but hear me out. Not only is cabbage a deliciously crunchy cruciferous vegetable loaded with detoxifying antioxidants, but it makes for a great grain-free pasta sub if you're handy with a kitchen knife.

3. Carrot noodles

Carrot Noodles

Image: Inspiralized

A subtly sweet pasta with a satisfying crunch? Say it ain't so. Boiled carrots can be easily turned into veggie noodles with a spiralizer, perfect to swap in for regular spaghetti in a traditional Italian dish like pasta arrabbiata.

4. Cucumber noodles

Cucumber noodles

Eating healthy shouldn't be so easy, but sometimes it just is. You don't have to chop your cucumbers like a chump anymore — bust out that handy spiralizer again to make cucumber noodles, tossed in a sweet-and-spicy summer salad.

5. Eggplant noodles

eggplant noodles

Image: Inspiralized

Eggplant may not be your first pasta substitute choice when you jump off the carb wagon, but there's something about the meaty eggplant that makes its faux noodle extra filling. These eggplant noodles get a quick fry with a little virgin olive oil to soften the texture, and the chickpeas and garlic don't hurt either.

6. Froodles

Fruit noodles

Image: Raw on 10

Fruit noodles, aka froodles, may not technically work as a savory pasta, but don't be so quick to cross this recipe off your dinner menu. Raw, vegan froodles are deliciously cheap — a fruit noodle dish made with fresh favorites like mango, papaya, cucumber, onion and avocado totals in at a cool $2 per serving.

7. Kelp noodles

Kelp noodles

Image: Pink's Pantry

Here's another store-bought pasta alternative that will scratch that carby itch whenever you're jonesing for spaghetti: Packaged kelp noodles are about as healthy as they come, made from edible brown seaweed with an estimated 10 calories per serving. If you've been looking for a low-calorie alternative to pad thai, then this kelp noodle swap does it right, at only 200 calories per serving.

8. Rainbow noodles

Rainbow noodles

Image: Peace, Love and Low Carb

Rainbow noodles are the perfect antidote to that boring, monochromatic color scheme on your plate (cauliflower and mashed potatoes, I'm looking at you). These fresh and flavorful noodles are made by spiralizing a cornucopia of vegetables — summer squash, zucchini, carrots, sweet potato, red onion, bell pepper and whatever else is in season.

9. Spaghetti squash

Spaghetti squash

Image: Erica's Recipes

Spaghetti squash is the OG of the pasta substitute world. You're bound to have had it at least once as you dipped your toes into the low-carb waters. But you've probably never had spaghetti squash like this before — serve it up piping hot with a traditional Italian Bolognese sauce, and your family will forget all about spaghetti.

10. Sweet potato noodles

Let's see a show of hands for everyone out there who has an unhealthy relationship with sweet potato fries. Now let's see those hands bookmarking this addicting sweet potato pasta recipe. Make your own sweet potato angel hair by running raw sweet potatoes through a spiralizer and baking for 10 minutes — serve up with your favorite spaghetti sauce.

11. Zucchini noodles

Right behind spaghetti squash, zucchini noodles, affectionately called zoodles, are arguably the second most popular pasta sub. Their consistency works well in almost any pasta recipe. Swap in spiralized zucchini noodles in your favorite spaghetti dish, or keep your taste buds guessing by trying zoodles one of 15 ways.

How to handle a friend’s pregnancy after you've miscarried

$
0
0

1. Don't feel guilty

Coping with miscarriage comes with its own feelings of guilt that you should not harbor. Sometimes women feel jealous or angry at their pregnant friends, then immediately feel guilty about these emotions. You have to remember you have a right to feel anything you want to or need to in order to cope, but feeling guilty is unfair to you. It is normal to go through these emotions and you should not feel guilty about feeling angry or upset at things out of your control.

2. Remember how you felt

When approaching an event or get-together with your pregnant friend, remember the excitement and happiness you felt when you found out you were pregnant. Try to remember how she is feeling and what she is experiencing when things get hard to deal with. If it ever gets too difficult, excuse yourself and regroup in another room or the bathroom. If you want to be there for your friend, no matter what you are going through, this is the best way to go about it.

3. Avoid if necessary

If you do feel emotions such as anger or guilt that you can't control, it is often best to avoid your pregnant friends for a little while. Hopefully, they will understand why you are not around as much as you were before. You need some time to cope with your emotions before trying to put yourself in damaging or painful situations around pregnant friends. As a friend recently told me, "Never apologize for doing what you needed to do to survive."

4. Be open and honest

If you are close to your friend and planning on being involved in her pregnancy and, ultimately, in the child's life, the best route is to be open and honest. If you are experiencing difficult emotions and are feeling the need to stay away to cope, then you need to tell your friend so that she doesn't feel upset. Explain why you are not going to be around and why. It is always good to express how much you love her and how excited you are for her, but there are some things you have to sort through before you can become more involved.

5. Practice patience

Because women often do not express the fact that they suffered a loss they need to deal with, they try to jump back into life as if nothing happened. If you are trying this, remember you did suffer a loss and that means you need time to grieve. Just because life doesn't slow down doesn't mean you have to keep racing as well. Yes, your friend is pregnant, but that doesn't mean your loss doesn’t exist. Be patient about going through your grieving period. It will take some time before you are able to celebrate life with your pregnant friend.

Sexy book excerpt: A steamy scene from Emma Chase's Sustained

Read the excerpt from Sustained by Emma Chase:

Mrs. Higgens heads out of the office and a few moments later, Chelsea and her fidgeting, noisy gaggle of nieces and nephews come into my office. She’s wearing a casual outfit — definitely “mommy wear,” but on that body it screams sexy. A dark green sweater that highlights the red in her auburn hair. Snug blue jeans tucked into high brown boots accent those endless legs — and the tight swell of her supple ass. That’s a pleasant surprise — I didn’t notice her ass the first time we met, but it’s f***ing gorgeous.

She adjusts her grip on the baby carrier and her smile is strained. “Hello, Mr. Becker.”

I stand up behind my desk. “Chelsea, it’s good to see you again. What brings you...”

My eyes scan each of the faces that crowd my office, and I realize one is missing.

“Where’s Rory?”

More: Sexy book excerpt: The first look at Christina Lauren's Dark Wild Night

Chelsea sighs. Before she can speak, the grouchy girl — 14-year-old Riley — answers for her. “The idiot got arrested. He stole a car.”

“A car?”

In a week, the little shit went from mugging to grand theft auto. That escalated quickly.

The small towheaded one, Rosaleen, continues. “And then he crashed it.”

The two-year-old supplies sound effects. “Brooocshhh.”

The smart one, Raymond, adds, “And not just any car — a Ferrari 458 Italia Limited Edition. The starting price is around nine hundred thousand dollars.”

I look to Chelsea, who nods. “Yeah, that’s pretty much the whole story. He’s in juvenile detention — serious trouble this time.”

This time implies there’s been other times — my almost-robbery notwithstanding.

Jesus Christ, kid.

Chelsea explains in a strained voice, “My brother has dozens of attorneys in his contact list, but none of them are defense attorneys. I had your card... and you seem like a good lawyer.”

Out of curiosity, I ask, “What makes you think I’m good?”

She raises her chin and meets my eyes. “You look like a man who knows how to win a fight. That’s what I need — what Rory needs.”

I take a few moments to think — to plan.

Chelsea must interpret my silence as rejection, because her voice turns almost pleading. “I don’t know what your typical retainer is, but I can afford —”

My lifted finger stops her. “I don’t think that’s going to be necessary. Wait here.” Then I point to Raymond. “Come with me.” And to the oldest girl. “You too, Smiley.”

As they follow me out the door, the brooding teen corrects me. “My name is Riley.”

“I know. But I’m going to call you Smiley.”

“Why?” she asks, like it’s the stupidest, most vile thing she’s ever heard.

I smirk. “Because you’re not.”

Let the eye-rolling commence.

I lead them into the office next door. Sofia Santos’s head is bent over her desk, her perfectly manicured hands scribbling rapid notes on a document. She looks up as we enter.

More: Sexy book excerpt: Read an intimate scene from Kresley Cole's The Master

“Hey, Sofia.” I hook my thumb at the sullen girl behind me. “This is Smiley McQuaid — her aunt is a new client and we have to head downtown for a few hours. Is it okay if she hangs with you?”

Stanton’s daughter, Presley, is almost 13. I figure if anyone is adept at dealing with a teenage female, it’s Sofia.

“Sure. I’ll be here all afternoon.”

Riley moves to my side. “My name is Riley.”

Sofia smiles. “Hi, Riley.” Then she points to a chair in the corner, next to a wall outlet. “The phone charger’s over there.”

Riley almost cracks a grin. Almost. “Swag.”

I turn to Sofia’s office companion, who’s staring at images on his laptop. “Brent, this is Raymond. Raymond, Brent. Can you keep him out of trouble for a few hours?”

Brent nods. Then, with the excitement of a boy allowed to watch his first R-rated horror movie, he asks Raymond, “You want to see pictures of blood splatter?”

The boy steps forward. “Is it as cool as it sounds?”

“Waaay cooler.”

“Sure!”

And my work here is done.

I pop my head back into my office and crook my finger at Rosaleen. She looks up at her aunt, who nods permission, and Rosaleen steps out to join me in front of Mrs. Higgens’ desk.

“Mrs. Higgens, this is Rosaleen. Can you mind her for a bit while her aunt and I head to the courthouse?”

Rosaleen looks down shyly, and Mrs. Higgens pulls up a chair beside her. “Of course. I have a granddaughter about your age, Rosaleen. I keep coloring books right here for when she visits. Do you like to color?”

Rosaleen nods eagerly, climbing into the chair.

I stride back into my office, where Chelsea and the two youngest rug rats await. I point at them. “You two look like the real troublemakers in the group, so you’re coming with us.”

“Hi!” the two-year-old replies with a deceptively sweet smile.

“Oh no, you’re not roping me into that again.”

I take the baby carrier from Chelsea’s hands — and almost drop the thing. “Wow,” I say, glancing down. “You’re heavier than you look.” He gurgles back with a mouth full of drool.

I turn to Chelsea. “You grab Thing One. Let’s go.”

Her voice stops me. It’s a whisper, quiet and inquisitive.

“Jake?”

It’s the first time she’s said my name. One small syllable that makes my gut tighten. That makes me want to hear her say it again — in a moan, a gasp. A pleasure-spiked scream.

More: Sexy excerpt: A steamy romance read from Baby It's Cold Outside

“Can I ask you something before we go?”

“Sure.”

She searches my face with an honest curiosity that could pierce body armor. “If it’s not the money... why are you helping us?”

It’s an interesting question. I’m not the noble type. I’m more of an “every man for himself” kind of guy. So why the hell am I helping them?

Because I want in her pants, of course. Doing Chelsea a favor is the most direct route to doing her. Really not that complicated.

I shrug. “I’m a sucker for a lost cause.”

And because I just can’t hold back any longer, I reach out one hand and gently stroke the ivory skin of her cheek. It’s softer than I ever could’ve imagined.

“And for a pretty face.”
