Avril Lavigne's positive attitude toward her Lyme disease is inspiring

More: Avril Lavigne, are you OK? The singer reveals she has health issues

Speaking during an interview with Billboard magazine, Lavigne remained positive about her illness, and admitted to even finding a silver lining throughout the entire ordeal.

"I haven't stopped working since I was 15," Lavigne explained, a decision she was forced to make when she fell ill. "Just to have this downtime, this time spent with my family, has been really good for me just to take a step back and look at my life, and really get to see who in my life is really there for me when I need them. I've had a lot of time to just think, and I've never been so clear before, or as close to my family. So there's been a lot of good that has come out of it. And moving forward, I'm really clear on what I want in life."

We applaud the star for having such a positive attitude and her outlook on life is truly inspiring. She's also decided to publicly share her battle with Lyme disease to help educate others who may not realize the horrible effect that a "simple bug bite" can have on them.

More: Avril Lavigne reveals she's not in rehab, but does have an addiction

"I feel like I have a responsibility — I can't just sit on my ass and do nothing," Lavigne told the magazine. "I need to talk about Lyme disease, because it's real, it's out there, it was a simple bug bite and it could happen to anybody. People need to know about it, because it's not talked about that much and a lot of the information that's out there is inaccurate."

Idiot boss fires woman by text message for refusing sex

Raymond Townsend used to be the manager of US Limousine, and despite the fact that his wife also worked there, he developed a major-league sexual attraction for his employee, 32-year-old Geralyn Ganci. He sent Ganci plenty of texts, including one stomach-turning message informing her that he "had to pull over to the side of the road and masturbate thinking about me," Ganci says.

No woman should have to endure this kind of harassment to earn a living.

Finally, in February 2009, Townsend forced her into a bathroom and shoved his hand up her shirt. When she resisted, he fired her from her job — by text message.

"The plaintiff even received another text message from Raymond Townsend which has been preserved stating that the reason plaintiff was fired was because he 'refused to have sex with the general manager,'" according to court documents.

Ganci was so traumatized by the experience she was eventually hospitalized for extreme emotional distress, her lawsuit says.

Ultimately Townsend and US Limousine were slapped with a judgment of $550,000 in damages and another $170,000 in court fees.

While this case is particularly shocking based on the sheer stupidity of Townsend, Ganci is hardly alone. A poll conducted by Cosmopolitan last month reveals that 1 in 3 women has been sexually harassed at work, and yet only 71 percent of those women report it.

Why? Just ask Ellen Pao, who just lost a groundbreaking lawsuit against Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Why? Because sexism in the workplace is practically impossible to prove. Unless your boss puts it in writing and sends it to you.

Not every sexual harasser is dopey enough to put evidence of their crime in a text message. Which is exactly why we applaud Ganci, Pao and all the women brave enough to stand up to workplace harassment of any kind.

Let's not leave brave ladies like these out in the open all alone. Support women you know at work, and encourage them to push back against sexual harassment. One case at a time, we have to work to make the workplace a safer place for our daughters. They're counting on us.

Sexless marriage isn't marriage at all

D'Ambrosio addresses the concept of the "sexless marriage" and the damage it can do.

"I'm baffled by couples who neglect having sex, especially younger ones. We all desire physical connection, so how does cutting that off lead you to believe your marriage will be successful? It's like telling someone you'll take them out to a restaurant but they can't order food."

More: 13 Things all happy couples do in their marriages

He makes an excellent point. A marriage without sex is not a marriage. It's a roommate situation. You are like business partners who share the same space. Obviously, every marriage is different and the amount of sex (and type of sex) will vary from couple to couple, but affection and sex are part of the marriage deal. Sorry. They just are.

Recently I have heard from countless people saying they are involved in marriages that lack sex. They aren't "sexless" entirely, but someone is not satisfied and it is disappointing to the other person in the relationship.

We can tell ourselves that sex doesn't matter. We can say it's a frivolous reason to be unhappy. But all evidence seems to suggest the opposite. In fact, sex is one of the main causes of divorce.

So how do we stop from having a sexless marriage? It's easy. Have sex. It's that simple. The fact is, we owe it to each other to try. Whether that means discussing our fantasies, watching porn, reading erotica or discussing sex with friends, we have to find ways to keep our fires stoked. Actually, it should be part of the marriage vows.

More: Divorced people open up about the moment they knew their marriage was over

They always say if you aren't sleeping with your man, someone else will. The same goes for men not sleeping with their women. We all need to put in a better effort to be there for our spouses. In all ways.

Bride by Design features Heidi Elnora and her Alabama boutique and it's like Say Yes to the Dress with all the glam but less of the drama. In other words, the good stuff. As she says, "No crazy drama because there's plenty of that inside my head [already]."

She designs custom gowns for brides that want to wear a dress no one else will ever be able to, but she also has a genius line of dresses called Build-a-Bride that lets brides start from scratch and build their own gown.

It's like the Chipotle of wedding dresses. Choose your silhouette (burrito, bowl, a-line?), choose your add-ons (rice, beans, lace, sparkle?), and be on your merry way. It's really pretty genius. See for yourself (and catch the show Friday nights on TLC at 9:30/8:30c).

"Build-A-Bride is awesome because it helps girls as a bride really define her shape and it helps to also define her personality," says Heidi. "It helps you to stay focused on your shape." Which is what every bride wants accentuated right? So simple, so genius.

I had to ask Heidi what her most common request is from brides who just can't find that gown. "There is one thing that everyone wants and that’s a tiny little waist." Thank you, Beyoncé.

Bacon-fried Oreos are the sweet-and-salty treat that will blow your mind

There are not a lot of times when I freak out about food (other than your normal I-am-excited-'cause-I-love-to-eat-all-day-every-day freak-out, that is), but when I see Oreos that are wrapped in bacon and then fried, my head spins in a way that makes my stomach wish I could reach my hand across the screen and grab one of these babies ASAP. I mean, look!

One of our favorite food blogs, Oh, Bite It!, has seriously outdone herself with this new recipe. I'm one of those people who loves flavor combinations. Give me salty-and-sweet any day, and these bacon-fried Oreos really deliver on that promise.

I don't know about you, but I know exactly what I am doing this weekend: eating about 27,000 of these. Well, maybe not that many, but certainly an entire box worth of Oreos. In fact, I also know what I am bringing to my friend's birthday next week, my friend's bridal shower next month and my dad's birthday in August. Everyone needs a signature dish, and I think I've just found mine.

Short on sleep? Use these beauty tricks and no one will know

$
0
0

I'm often lucky to get three straight hours of sleep. That means in the morning I don't look my best. Luckily I've found a few beauty tricks that can save me a day of being asked, "do you feel OK?"

11 Steps

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

I really think being awake in the middle of the night sucks moisture out of my skin. The end result is that I look older, my skin is lackluster and any makeup that I apply isn't even and sinks into fine lines. If you know that you'll be having a long night, plan ahead with a super-hydrating night cream. If you forget, you can still apply a light layer of that night cream in the morning under your makeup.

Product recommendation:

Garnier Miracle Sleeping Cream Anti-Age + Anti-Fatigue Night Cream (Garnierusa, $17)

2. Caffeine is your friend

Under-eye bags are a dead giveaway that you didn't get a good night of sleep. A good eye cream, especially if it contains caffeine, can decrease the puffiness and temporarily tighten the entire area.

Product recommendation:

Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller (Garnierusa, $13)

3. Color correction

Dark circles under your eyes? Don't reach for your concealer first! Instead, grab a color corrector to neutralize the color of the bags. Colors that are opposites on the color wheel will cancel each other out. The bags are usually blue based, so using a peach or orange tone on them helps hide them! Use a peach if you have a light skin tone, or go for a more vivid orange tone if your skin tone is darker or your under-eye circles are more intense. Using a fingertip, lightly pat the corrector onto the discoloration only. Cover it up with foundation or concealer.

Product recommendations:

FACE Stockholm Corrector Kit (Facestockholm, $32)
NYX Color Correcting Palette (NYXcosmetics, $12)

4. Concealer with illumination

It is tempting to just reach for a heavy-duty concealer to cover up the effects of a long night, but you'll likely just make yourself look worse! Start with the color correction, and then reach for a lightweight concealer with a bit of light diffusion. Because you've neutralized your under-eye circles, you no longer need the heavy coverage. The light shimmer in these products helps reflect light, making any imperfections less obvious.

When applying, don't only apply to the half moon under your eye. Instead, create an upside-down triangle with the points at either corner of your eye and the tip as the side of your nose. Fill that entire area with concealer and blend it well up onto the side of your nose, the inner corner of your eye and up to your lash line.

Product recommendations:

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch Highlighter (YSLbeautyus, $42)
Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer (Maybelline, $8)

5. Even more illumination

Illuminating doesn't stop at your under-eye area! Depending upon your usual routine, rotate in an illuminating primer, foundation or finishing powder.

Product recommendations:

COVER FX Illuminating Primer (CoverFX, $38)
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Foundation (YSLbeautyus, $57)
Too Faced Candlelight Pressed Powder (Toofaced, $30)
e.l.f. Studio High Definition Undereye Setting Powder (Eyeslipsface, $3)

6. Brow lift

Filling in your eyebrows is probably not the first thing that you think of when you need to look more awake, but this small step will make you look much more polished and really opens up your eye area! Use a brow pencil lightly in your brow, and then follow it up with a little concealer or a brow highlighter right underneath. Blend with a fingertip.

Product recommendations:

NYX Eyebrow Push Up Bra (NYXcosmetics, $10)
It Cosmetics Your Brows But Better Pencil (Itcosmetics, $24)

7. Change your eyeliner

Instead of lining your upper and lower lash lines with the same black eyeliner that you usually reach for, reach for a brown liner and a smudge brush. The brown isn't as harsh as the black, making it perfect for days that you aren't looking your best. Line only your upper lash line, as close to the base of the lashes as you can, and smudge with the brush to soften the look. Your eyes will be emphasized, but you'll avoid the midday eyeliner smudged under your eyes.

Product recommendations:

Sephora Pro Smudge Brush #11 (Sephora, $18)
Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Damsel (Stillacosmetics, $20)

8. Lashes

Who doesn't love long and lush eyelashes? Lightly curl your lashes and then apply a lengthening mascara with a wand that grabs every last lash. Your eyes will look larger and more open, helping you look much more awake.

Product recommendations:

Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara (Toofaced, $23)
Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes 5 Star Mascara (Charlottetilbury, $29)
CoverGirl LashBlast Volume (Covergirl, $8)

9. Open your eyes

Just when you think that you've finished your eyes, there's one last step! A little highlighter to the inner corner of your eye will brighten your eyes and make them pop!

Product recommendations;

Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightener (Smashbox, $20)
RMS Beauty Living Luminizer (RMSbeauty, $38)

10. A healthy flush

When I've been up most of the night, I am pale and washed out the next day. I need to add a bit of color to my skin, but going overboard will backfire and make me look even worse. I've found that a light pinky-peach blush with a touch of shimmer is perfect for my cheeks. I also grab a larger powder blush and will hit my forehead and down the center of my face. The larger brush means the color is much more subtle, but it makes a big difference in how awake I look.

Product recommendations:

It Cosmetics CC+ Radiance Palette (Itcosmetics, $38)
MAC Mineralize Blush in New Romance (MACcosmetics, $27)

11. A lippie with color

The morning after a rough night isn't the time for that dark, vampy lipstick you've been wanting to try out, or for the nude lippie that is just barely darker than your own skin tone. Instead, reach for a lip color that is darker than your own lips, whether it is a pretty rosy tone or a bright statement pink. The punch of color will brighten up your face.

Mums confess: "I sedated my kids for peace and quiet"

$

Sedating children is a highly controversial topic. Some mums are against using medication for sedation, while others will try anything for a few moments of silence. Once upon a time, the tried and tested solution was hot milk with whisky, a few sips of wine or Benadryl. Now, mums around the country are reaching for the Phenergan.

Phenergan, a so-called magic elixir, is a an over-the-counter antihistamine commonly used for rashes, itchiness, motion sickness and runny noses. However, it can also double as a sleeping aid. So we asked some mums who have sedated their kids what the effects were. The responses were a mixed bag.

It made them super hyper

Hyperactive

"My daughter had an ongoing skin rash when she was smaller. The doctor prescribed Phenergan, however, it just made her nuts and she went completely off the rails and hyper!"

"I gave my first child Phenergan when he was 23 months old for his first flight from Australia to New Zealand. It helped him sleep on the way over, but on the way back it had the opposite effect and he was super hyper."

"I used it on my daughter on a flight to Hawaii. She just went super hyper."

"My son drank some Phenergan, which I had planned to slip him on a long-haul flight to Heathrow. He ended up having over three times the recommended dose. We rushed him to emergency. I expected it would have made him sleepy, but no, it was like he had ants in his pants for the next six hours."

It had no effect whatsoever

"Tried Phenergan on my children, but it had no effect whatsoever. Our kids have travelled a lot with us, but we haven't experienced any trouble keeping them quiet. I have seen kids scream on planes for what seems like an eternity and wish their parents had tried to sedate them."

It made my daughter bark like a dog

"I gave my 3-year-old daughter a small dose to try and calm her down while we were having dinner with my husband's big boss. It ended up having the opposite effect. She crawled under the glass table where we were all having dinner and barked like a dog, up and down the length of the table, refusing to come out and dodging my attempts to grab her. I've never been so embarrassed and never tried it again."

It worked well for my child

"I gave Phenergan to my first child when she was 10 months old for a plane trip to my big sister's wedding. I gave her half the recommended dose and she slept for half the flight. A sleeping child equals a happy mum."

As with all medications, they can have unwanted side effects. According to WebMD these can include irritability, restlessness and hallucinations.

Boy with autism threatened with suspension over essential oils

Autism and essential oils

Autism and essential oils

Jessica Kemp's 5-year-old son, Logan, has autism, and she found that using essential oils such as lavender, sandalwood and chamomile helps her son's behavior during his school day. She says she was surprised when she got a note from the school advising that her son would be suspended because of the oils.

Using these essential oils is not a new practice for the family — they've been using them all year, and they've heard only one complaint from a teacher's aide. Kemp is puzzled as to why this is suddenly such a serious problem that it might have resulted in suspension.

Once the news story initially broke, the district backpedaled and stated that Logan would not be suspended as they worked to find another solution. But Kemp is upset that her attempt to help her son could have led to him being forced to leave the school he loves.

I feel for this mom, and I think it's wonderful that she feels these essential oils are helping to calm her boy. But it really depends on how strong the smells are — for example, we have a family member who has serious seizures that are triggered by catching even a whiff of essential oils, and for others, strong smells can cause migraines or possibly allergic reactions.

A spokesperson for the school district said she was told the smells are strong, which likely led to the decision to boot the kid out of school. And while I agree there should have been better communication with Kemp and the IEP team they likely have, I can easily see how strong essential oil smells can disrupt a classroom, much like heavy perfume or cologne can.

I've seen many people suggest that this child should be homeschooled, but Logan is entitled to a free and appropriate public education, just like all children are in the U.S. If some of his treatment is causing distress for other students and staff, then maybe there is another solution they can come up with so everyone can be safe, educated and happy.

3 Spring mimosas that will up your brunch game

$

A buffet breakfast with a little corner for this morning cocktail makes eating a great deal more special. I would normally pour myself a classic mimosa with freshly squeezed orange juice, 1 part each, but other combinations are just as delicious.

Mixing Champagne (or other sparkling wines) with fruit juices always makes for a pleasant experience, and with this in mind, I like experimenting with different fruits to mix together and discover new flavors. I would like to share with you three of my favorite mixtures that are perfect for spring.

1. Blood orange mimosa with balsamic glaze recipe

Blood orange and balsamic vinegar mimosa

With the classic version still in my mind, using blood oranges gives this mimosa an incredible vermilion color with an added touch of balsamic vinegar. It's a must-try for classic mimosa lovers.

Serves 1

Total time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 ounces chilled, freshly squeezed blood orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic glaze (or 3/4 teaspoon balsamic vinegar and 3/4 teaspoon honey)
  • 3 ounces chilled Champagne (or other sparkling wine)

Directions:

  1. Into the Champagne flute, pour the orange juice and balsamic glaze, and stir. If you are using balsamic vinegar, then add the balsamic vinegar and the honey, and stir.
  2. Pour the Champagne on top of the juice, and serve immediately.

2. Elderflower mimosa with raspberries and basil recipe

Ederflower mimosa with raspberries and basil

This drink is delicately floral and just refreshing. The elderflower syrup gives a delicious base to this mimosa, and the raspberries and basil give it a surprising touch.

Serves 1

Total time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce chilled elderflower syrup

Debbie Gibson explains why Taylor Swift wouldn't have happened in the '80s

Gibson, whose albums Out of the Blue and Electric Youth ruled the airwaves from 1987 to 1989, recently sat down with SheKnows to get nostalgic about the era and talk about how entertainment has changed over the past 25 years.

More: Debbie Gibson and Tiffany heading to Syfy

Being a female musician in the '80s was a lot more of a struggle, said Gibson. The singer helped pave the way for some of today's most popular artists by taking control of her own music, but she admits it wasn't easy. "Being a female writer and producer, it was an uphill battle," she said.

More: Debbie Gibson is battling Lyme disease

Gibson candidly speaks about how Taylor Swift's career wouldn't be what it is today had Swift been recording music in 1989 as opposed to being born that year. "Typically, women are puppets, especially young girls, and older males write and produce their music," Gibson said of the time period.

She also talks about how music is coming full circle from the '80s, and she reminisces about the time before reality TV and social media. "I feel like we've been saying 'the '80s are back' for so long and they're still here, and maybe they're not going anywhere," Gibson said, "which I think is fabulous."

The best thing about this dish is that it’s super easy to prepare. All you have to do is assemble everything, so you can actually prep it the night before and then just pop it into the oven right before your guests arrive. That ensures it will be fresh and perfectly crisp.

Ham and cheese slab pie recipe

Serves 6

Prep Time:  30 minutes | Cook Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

3 ounces cream cheese, softened

1 tablespoon whole grain mustard

1 frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed

3 ounces thinly sliced Black Forest ham

3 green onions, sliced (use green only)

3 ounces thinly sliced Havarti cheese or Gruyere

1 large egg

1 tablespoon water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Cream together the cream cheese and mustard.

On a lightly floured surface, roll puff pastry sheet into a 15 x 12-inch rectangle.

Transfer sheet to the prepared baking sheet; spread the cream cheese mixture lengthwise on half of the rectangle, leaving 1/2-inch border around outside edges.

Add individual layers of ham, onion and cheese over cream cheese layer, leaving a 1/2-inch border around outside edges.

Whisk together the egg and water.

Brush some of the egg mixture on the uncovered edges of the pastry.

Fold uncovered portion of the pastry rectangle up and over filling.

Use a fork to seal edges together.

Brush tops with egg mixture.

Cut decorative slits in top of pastry for steam to escape.

Bake about 25 minutes or until pastry is golden on the top and bottom.

Slide pie and parchment paper onto wire rack; cool slightly.

How to celebrate spring break without going anywhere

A week off with kids who are used to the nonstop stimulation of school can seem endless. How to keep everyone amused and get them properly worn out come bedtime? We came up with five great ideas to make this spring break fly by, no travel required.

Explore overlooked local fun spots

It's family field trip time! If you've lived somewhere for several years, you might be overlooking activities beyond your usually traveled routes. Is there an updated exhibit at the children's museum? A brand new splash park on the other side of town? Even a different mall play area can seem like a novelty for small children. Venture a bit outside your comfort zone to find some new activities on the local scene.

Hit up the library

Libraries often plan activities during spring break beyond their standard fare. Keep an eye out for special puppet shows, story times and craft activities. Take this opportunity to teach your children more about the library and encourage them to choose books they normally wouldn't. Need to spice this one up a bit? If you have a large public library system, trek the kids to a branch they've never visited before. Even if they don't have special events planned, your kids will be fascinated by their different displays and varied selection.

Go on a nature scavenger hunt

You may not even have to leave your own backyard. In fact, aim for not having to leave your house at all, and send the kids out back to retrieve a list of wacky nature objects. They can look for pinecones, leaves of certain colors, smooth rocks — whatever you can come up with. Make this science-based scavenger hunt challenging enough to keep them out in the bright sunshine as long as possible, but not so difficult they ask you questions every few minutes.

Give each day a theme

Pirate day? Pajama day? Anything your kids are into, make a day of it. Structure meals, activities and outfits around the day's theme. Before spring break starts, let the kids make some suggestions for what kinds of themes they'd be into. Try to balance the schedule with both silly and educational themes to make the most of your days together.

Fill a jar with ideas

No matter how much you plan, you are bound to be hit with "I'm boooored" more often than you'd like. Solution: Create a boredom jar. Brainstorm a bunch of simple activities (a mix of chores and fun), write them on slips of paper and keep them in a jar. If your kid comes to you because he can't come up with anything fun to do, direct him to the jar. It makes whining a bit of a gamble, and pretty soon you might find your kids stop requiring you to inspire their entertainment.

Khloé Kardashian's obsession with Lamar Odom might hold up their divorce

Khloé Kardashian filed for divorce from Lamar Odom back in December 2013, but the proceedings never moved forward. Now the whole thing is in danger of being thrown out of court.

The couple split amidst rumors of Lamar's downward spiral with drugs and other women, but when Khloé formally filed to dissolve their union, Lamar never responded. She could have gone back for a default judgement due to his unwillingness to participate, but after two years she still hasn't — and that may be by design.

Because, you see, Khloé still loves her Lammy.

"I will never, ever not love Lamar," she told E! News. "I was so obsessed with him, in a healthy way. He was my husband, and I still wish he was, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that."

"There's nothing I can do," she said. "Lamar has to do things in order to change in that aspect, but yeah, if I had my way I'd be married to Lamar in two seconds."

Can they mend their marriage before the end of April, when the court is threatening to throw out their case? Unlikely. Khloé is in Armenia with her sister Kim to get back to their family's roots.

7 Etiquette tips for smooth international spring travel

In an attempt to quash our long-standing identity as rude Americans and remove the Housewives blemish we have become so closely associated with, here's a little refresher course on how to behave when journeying and exploring a foreign territory. Remember, you're unofficial acting ambassadors of our country. Do us proud!

1. Taking to the friendly skies

Dress appropriately for international travel. Wear shoes with socks. Long pants or leggings are the most comfortable. Take a sweater or coat for cool cabin temperatures. Bring only carry-on cases that will fit in the overhead compartment. Use the restroom beforehand unless you are seated on the aisle. Refrain from boarding with offensive-smelling foods. Keep crunchy snacks to a minimum. Instead, try sampling the airline's cuisine. It may be serving dishes from the territory you will be visiting. Watch alcohol intake; limit yourself to one glass. It will make jet lag less likely. Drink plenty of water, apply hand cream and lip moisturizer; this will help keep you hydrated. Curb any diva tendencies. If the flight is delayed or grounded, stay calm and go with the flow.

2. Spending time in the hotel

Nice hotels may have strict guidelines regarding permissible attire to be worn in the common areas. Consult in advance to be sure you bring appropriate clothing. Manage voice level when dining or socializing. Always speak kindly to the staff when asking questions, making inquiries or reservations. Use the magic words: please, thank you, excuse me, I'm sorry... constantly.

3. Exchanging greetings with the natives

Apply the expression "when in Rome," and do as the others do. If you are greeted with a handshake, extend your hand willingly. A kiss on each cheek is never seen as romantic, merely a warm gesture of friendliness. If you are greeted with a bow, go along as this is seen as a sign of respect in Asian countries.

4. Sightseeing out and about town

When visiting churches, synagogues or other places of worship, show reverence by dressing conservatively. No shorts or flip flops. Bring a wrap to cover shoulders. If you are asked to remove your shoes, do so. Leave food and drinks outside. Turn cell phones off. Keep voices low. The same deference should be applied to museums containing significant works of art. Respect and mindfulness is the motto to be upheld any time you are in a public space.

5. Speaking the local language

While many foreigners learn English as a second language, Americans should never assume everyone speaks English. Make attempts to master a few key words and phrases in your destination's language. There are countless language and translation apps for this very purpose. This will not only leave a good impression, it will enable you to communicate more freely thus making your trip more pleasant. Do not worry about perfecting accents or pronunciation, the effort is what matters most.

6. Enjoying a scrumptious meal

When in doubt, dine continental style utilizing both fork and knife, fork tines down. Place napkin folded lengthwise neatly in your lap. Employ the resting position (fork and knife in an upside down "V" at the top of the plate) when taking a break and the finished position (fork and knife together on the diagonal to the right) when you have concluded your meal. If dining in a country that forgoes utensils altogether, dive in with your bread, your fingers, your chopsticks or any other device meant for bringing food to your lips.

7. Showing appreciation for services

The tipping conundrum of who to tip and how much to give varies from country to country. Review your destination's tipping habits and expectations, from restaurants and hotels to transportation and tour guides, prior to departure. Many of the workers rely on tourists for gratuities to feed their families and pay the rent, but it is important to educate yourself on the nuances. While it would be considered rude to stiff a service person, handing over a large clump of cash in certain countries may be considered equally offensive.

Quick and easy energy-boosting exercises

All of these workouts are focused on giving you an extra energy boost and stimulating circulation... because who doesn't like energy? If you're anything like me, you need your energy like you need your air. These three workouts will boost and lift your mood, your energy (so you aren't so exhausted!) and your butt.

Winner!

Here's why I like each of these exercises:

Tricep dips: Yes they're easy and simple, but I swear by them for the backs of my arms. True story: I used to have bat wings. You know that stuff that flaps in the wind when you wave goodbye? Yeah. Anyway, tricep dips tighten those wings right up. Thank God. This is my go-to when I want a quick energy boost.

Side lunges: Again guys, I'm old fashioned. None of this "hanging from the ceiling with a band" kind of shit. Side lunges are insane for the sides of your legs/butt. You know those inward curves we all want on our butt? Those are from side lunges. Obsessed with good, ol' side lunges. Plus the boost of lunging up and down will give you a quick wake up.

Front lunges: I guess I'm a lunge fan in general? I don't know, I just like what lunging does to my legs, I guess. I notice that it gives me muscles in all the right places without looking too bulky. Lunges are a great, quick way to tighten up and give you a quick kick in the butt aka energy boost.

Other ways to boost your energy? Walk the dog, dry brush, drink tea (I've been obsessed with tea since I've been in Asia... especially peppermint), ride a bike, take care of your skin (I've been loving Garnier’s Ultra-Lift® Miracle Sleeping Cream because it tightens my skin and gives it life), read a positive book (loving this one), go for a lymphatic drainage massage (more on this later) or have a glass of champagne (I kid, I kid).

What are your quick, easy energy tips?
