Caution: New Power Rangers has lots of nudity and drug use (VIDEO)

More: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie dream cast

But director Joseph Kahn — whose other credits include Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" and a ton of celeb music videos — has done just that with the help of Dawson's Creek's James Van Der Beek and Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackoff. Pair them with some serious blood and lots of naked women and you have a futuristic Power Rangers titled Power/Rangers that is far from kid-appropriate.

The short film feels like a feature with crazy special effects and fighting stunts that should come from an R-rated feature on the big screen rather than a YouTube video done purely for exhibition.

The film was sure to make a point to say Power/Rangers is "not a pilot, not a series, not for profit," calling itself, "a bootleg experiment."

More: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie has a release date, but no director

The short tells the story of the grown-up heroes who haven't been very heroic since their days of saving the planet from the evil alien race led by Rita. In fact, the story opens with Rocky the Red Ranger (Van Der Beek) who has betrayed the Rangers and kidnapped Kimberly the Pink Ranger (Sackoff), who is one of the last rangers alive.

As the film unfolds, we discover what led to the untimely deaths of our childhood heroes and it isn't a pretty picture. The gritty plot just keeps getting darker until a pretty serious twist at the end.

Check out the short film below.

Power Rangers gritty short film

Producer Adi Shankar said the inspiration for the film came because, as a child, his favorite series was Power Rangers and he wanted to be a Power Ranger until he realized "high school kids weaponized to fight an intergalactic threat would turn those kids into some seriously disturbed adults."

And while this film is purely a fan film, Lionsgate has announced that it is planning a big screen reboot of the franchise, which will reimagine the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. According to E! Online, however, the Lionsgate reboot won't stray far from the original premise of the show, following a group of high schoolers gifted with superpowers. In other words, you're looking at a PG rating here. At most a PG-13 rating, but don't hold your breath, people. The only place you'll see the blood and nudity of Power/Rangers is on YouTube.

Would you watch a feature-length film reboot of Power Rangers if it were as gritty as the short film?

Pregnant dads

Pregnant dads

The idea of men stepping into the shoes of pregnant women is cute, and it has been done before. You might recall this 2013 viral video of men experiencing real contractions through the use of a labor pain simulator as their wives stood by and cackled.

Perhaps it is this bonding ritual that these three dads are trying to recreate. The trio plans to wear full pregnancy suits that include a robust belly and boobs through Mother's Day, observed in the United Kingdom on Sunday, March 15.

So maybe their hearts are in the right place, but let's not forget that these married dads are also promoting a personalized Mother's Day book through this publicity stunt, the Book Of Mum. And speaking of hearts, what about the heartburn? What about the leg cramps and itchy skin? What about the constant need to pee every 15 minutes once the baby drops and nestles his sweet little head directly on your bladder?

This "empathy belly" is designed to make life uncomfortable by putting pressure on the lungs, stomach and bladder and causing abdominal distention. But sadly, there is no way for these devoted dads to experience what pregnancy is really like on the inside, save for the annoying task of carting giant boobs and 33 pounds of baby belly around all day long. Oh yeah, and they are only doing this for one month. They're missing out on the entire third trimester when most women have grown so large that they want to tear their hair out.

At the time of their Daily Mail interview just eight days into the pregnancy project, these dads already had something to say about what it was like to be an exhausted expecting mom. Forty-six-year-old Steve agreed that putting on socks becomes a "monumental task" when you have a giant pregnant belly in the way. After only three days of sporting a lovely lady lump, 45-year-old Jonny went to the pharmacy to get a belly band for support.

Forty-four-year-old Jason said, "I wonder why pregnant women don't use wheelchairs. I have a chair in the office with wheels, and this is a blessing. I can glide effortlessly across the office to my desired destination."

This project is kitschy and cute and will probably help to sell their book, but let's not give these dads a pat on the back just yet. It's sweet that these fathers are willing to risk public embarrassment to commiserate with pregnant women everywhere, but share these musings with a mom and see where it gets you. I'm placing bets on an eye roll and a punch in the face.

Your 'secret' online symptom searches actually aren't so secret

$

0

Vice opened up my eyes to this problem in their article on how sites like WebMD share your information with other sites. Obviously not with live status updates like "Jenni Maier is pretty concerned about a red bump that just won't go away," but through their tracking elements.

Their tracking what? I know, I'm not a computer scientist either. Let me have Vice explain:

"Thus, Libert has discovered that the vast majority of health sites, from the for-profit WebMD.com to the government-run CDC.gov, are loaded with tracking elements that are sending records of your health inquiries to the likes of web giants like Google, Facebook, and Pinterest, and data brokers like Experian and Acxiom.

"From there, it becomes relatively easy for the companies receiving the requests, many of which are collecting other kinds of data (in cookies, say) about your browsing as well, to identify you and your illness. That URL, or URI, which very clearly contains the disease being searched for, is broadcast to Google, Twitter, and Facebook, along with your computer’s IP address and other identifying information."

See that there? Your IP address is technically being attached to your searches. While I already knew that everything I do is being recorded somewhere, I somehow never really thought about this aspect of it all. I'm annoyed by the fact that whenever I search to buy something on Google, ads for that something take over my Facebook News Feed ads. I'm downright horrified at the prospect of someone connecting my symptom searches to my name.

I Google every bump, headache, stomach pain and cramp. I then usually proceed to diagnose myself with a deadly disease and spend several minutes debating if I should rush myself to the hospital. In the time between reading my new diagnosis and deciding whether or not to call 911, I usually develop every other symptom I read about. ("Now that you mention it, my hand does feel numb. OMG it's so numb! Do I even have a hand anymore?")

More: This year's top Google searches make 2014 seem pretty darn depressing

Now, in my defense, I did correctly diagnose my appendicitis through the internet. In not my defense, I've also misdiagnosed myself with several blood clots, cancers and rare bacterial infections. So this tracking revelation is definitely going to make me rethink my relationship with the internet. It's not like these are symptoms I go around bragging about. Is it really worth searching every symptom I ever experience if there's a chance that one day it will all be revealed?

My rational side is like, "No one cares enough to ever reveal this information." But my narcissistic side is like, "It will be revealed, and I will be ruined, so I should stop." And finally, my romantic side says, "This is what I get for starting an online relationship with WebMD."

6 Things Judd Apatow might change about Pee-wee Herman

$

The classic movie has everything anyone could ever want: mystery, romance, action, comedy, drama. It's like the best aspects of every genre were all rolled into one fun-filled flick. True, Big Top Pee-wee quenched our Pee-wee full-length feature thirst three years after the eternal man-child's beloved bike was finally found in the first film, but it still left us wanting more.

Talk of Judd Apatow partnering with Paul Reubens to bring Pee-wee Herman back onto the screen and into our hearts has been floating around for a couple years now, leaving loyal fans wondering when, and if, their prayers would finally be answered.

On Tuesday, Netflix officially announced that they will be working with Reubens and Apatow to make Pee-wee's Big Holiday, according to CBS News.

More: How Amy Schumer's Trainwreck made me realize being too PC is bad for comedy

Now that we know that Apatow is producing the next chapter for Pee-wee, what does it mean for the iconic character? Pee-wee's movies are beloved, mostly because they are richly based in fantasy, whereas Apatow's creations are so endearing to audiences because they are largely based on the realities of the human experience. We're still trying to wrap our heads around how the two styles will be united, but we're willing to bet it will be amazing.

Here are six awesome upgrades that only Apatow could bring to the Pee-wee franchise.

1. Crazy fight scenes

Seth Rogen

Image: Giphy

We love Pee-wee, however, the guy's got a strong personality, which might account for all the face-offs he encountered during his original big adventure. Technology has come a long way in the 20-plus years since the legendary Tim Burton directed Reubens. Apatow has produced more recent pictures, like Pineapple Express, that utilized this new technology and we can only theorize that it's going to be brought into Pee-wee's Big Holiday.

Pee-wee versus Francis in the bathtub is still one of the most epic battle royales of all time, though. Even with computer advances, it's gonna be hard for Apatow to beat this fight.

Pee-Wee vs. Fancis

2. An epic cast

Freaks and Geeks

Image: Giphy

We all know that Apatow has a crew. Kristen Wiig, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, James Franco and Seth Rogen (just to name a few) all love working him. As babies of the '80s, something tells us that all of these actors are chomping at the bit to get in on the Pee-wee action, to which we say: Bitchin'.

Pee-Wee Herman

3. Jokes on jokes on jokes

Danny McBride

Image: Giphy

Honestly, this is gonna be an amazing collaboration as far as comedy goes. Reubens, who cowrote Pee-wee's Big Adventure with Phil Hartman and Michael Varhol, is also penning the new movie, so we can expect hilarious one-liners throughout the whole script. Apatow is famous for throwing out strings of one-liners to his stars on set, so things are gonna get good when he gets together with Reubens.

4. Romance

Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston

Image: Giphy

Whether it's flawed romance or a bromance, humans bonding and trying to relate to one another is really what Apatow does best. To that end, is it possible that Pee-wee will have a true partner in crime to take on his holiday? Sure, he's had pals and love interests in the past, but they've never been the center of his universe. He's a loner, Dottie. A rebel.

Pee-Wee Herman

5. A contemporary soundtrack

Leslie Mann and Megan Fox

Image: Giphy

Danny Elfman's original score for Pee-wee's Big Adventure is not to be rivaled, but it's likely Apatow will bring more contemporary music to the newest Pee-wee installation. Different, not better, is the key idea here as far as music goes. We wouldn't mind a little "Tequila," though.

6. Some old friends

Jonah Hill and Russell Brand

Image: Giphy

Apatow loves to throw characters from old movies into his new plots — Aldous Snow from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, for instance — so it's not out of the question for him to bring back some people from Pee-wee's heyday. We'd love to see Elizabeth Daily reprise her role as Dottie or Mark Holton come back as Francis. At the very least, Apatow has some awesome cameos he can play with. Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis would be awesome, or how about a road encounter with Large Marge played by Danny McBride, just for shits and giggles?

Save money by being your own personal trainer—here’s how

$

So, the personal trainer you promised yourself you'd hire to get back into shape is simply not in the cards. Might as well throw in the towel, throw on the flannels, break out the Cheetos and revisit the issue in 2016! Not so fast. Though there are many incredible benefits to working with a trainer, there are a few ways you can act as your own fitness professional.

Pencil yourself in

Part of the reason working with a trainer works is that it keeps you accountable. You have set appointments that you pay good money for, whether you show up or not. More often than not, that means you make them a top priority and rarely miss a session. So, in order to keep yourself accountable on your own, you must treat your workouts like ironclad appointments. One way to do that is to pencil them in. Create a fitness calendar for yourself, put it where you can see it and physically write down the times, days and types of workouts you plan on attending each week. Work other parts of your schedule around these set-in-stone sessions just as you would for a hired pro. Simply, show up for yourself. (Isn't that a mouthful!)

Write down the plan

Another part of the personal trainer puzzle is the sessions are always efficient. There is never a moment wasted on trying to figure out what to do next; they have a plan already mapped out, moving everything along in a super-organized and super-time-effective manner. Well, can't we do this for ourselves? Abso-effing-lutely, we can! Just like a fitness expert, you too can ensure an effective session at the gym. I hate to sound like a broken record but, write it down! Spend a few minutes before you head out for your workout, put a pencil to paper and write down exactly what exercises you're going to do, in what order and for what duration. That way, when you enter the weight room you know exactly what's going down and never waste a moment staring blankly into the abyss of available equipment. If you're not quite sure where to start, don't fret. There are a lot of great online fitness resources to get your creative exercise juices flowing. You can find excellent pre-planned workouts at http://www.popsugar.com/Workouts and http://www.shape.com/fitness/workouts. Spend a few weeks following their guidelines and soon you'll start mixing and matching all the moves you learned into customized combinations. Just make sure you do the moves you hate as well as the ones you love.

Pump yourself up

"Don’t give up!" "You got this!" "Push harder!" You might roll your eyes at these cheesy affirmations, but trust me, when you're dripping of sweat, trembling from head to toe and working until absolute failure, you can use all the help you can get. Yes, motivation is another indispensible aspect of a trainer. Whether it's an enthusiastic pep talk to get you through a tough set, or a pat on the back afterwards, this encouragement can be the difference between getting through it and giving up. Can we do this for ourselves? Yes. Do we? Not usually! Most of us are really bad at giving ourselves positive pep talks, about anything. "I'm too tired." "I'm not good at this." "I should just quit." Most of our internal dialogue is ridden with negative, nay-saying self-doubt. Without getting into the incredibly depressing nature of that statement, this is a great time to stop that Negative Nancy B.S. and start supporting and encouraging ourselves.

Here are a few tips for flipping the script. Before you start a new exercise, remind yourself how capable you are. A simple, "I can do this," will do. As the set gets more difficult acknowledge the challenge and refuse to quit. Think to yourself, "I'm almost there... don't quit now!" When you finish, don't forget to praise yourself for your physical and mental strength to see it through! "That was amazing. I'm getting stronger!" #PREACH

Do it right

Anything worth doing is worth doing right, especially when it comes to exercise. You can do 1,000 squats, but if your form is off you may not actually be benefitting from them. The wrong technique can not only cause injury, but you can actually be working the wrong muscles entirely. Part of the personal training gig is to ensure safety, remind you how to properly execute every exercise and spot your form throughout the workout.

Here are a few prompts you can use on your own at the gym to improve your form without the help of a professional.* The first is: Relax your shoulders, otherwise you risk pulling muscles in your upper back and neck. The next cue is: Engage your core. It will intensify the work and help with stability and balance. Tightening the core will also help when it comes to protecting your back, which segues perfectly into the next cue: Make sure your lower back is not arching. Whether it's pressing your lower back into the mat when doing something like leg-raises or chest press or making sure your whole body is straight as a board when doing moves like planks or push-ups, this will help make sure your back isn't absorbing the brunt of the impact and the right muscles are engaged.

*Note: If you have doubts about how to safely perform an exercise, then ask someone! Find a fitness professional at your gym and ask them. That's what they're there for!

The Late Night with Conan O'Brien host has previously used the popular dating app Tinder (with Dave Franco's help), but now he wanted to know what the difference between the two apps was, and Eichner came to the rescue.

"Grindr is for basically gay guys not pretending it's for anything other than meeting up to have sex," Eichner tells O'Brien, who then happily reveals that there have been times when he has been attracted to men.

O'Brien then goes on to create a profile for himself, with a very inventive username of "FreckleF***er." Then comes the photo, which O'Brien describes as "horrifying" and we don't disagree — although we did laugh at his multiple poses.

O'Brien and Eichner take things to the next level as they have fun creating messages to send to men that they find attractive, which include, "Hey, I like your airplane. Are you circumcised?" and "Hey, what's up? You want to get plowed by a rich ginger?"

The end result is crazier than you would expect. Hilarity ensues, but don't take our word for it — watch the video below.

New reports about Marijuana will change the way you see booze

$

The new study published in Scientific Reports looked at 10 drugs. These drugs included marijuana, alcohol, tobacco, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, methamphetamine, diazepam, amphetamine and methadone. Marijuana was the safest.

The fact is, this is what recreational users of pot have been saying for years. The reason it is safer is related to the risk of mortality. Whatever is considered a "normal" amount of the substance is the amount they looked at. In other words: Users of pot are less likely to die. That's a good thing.

For health reasons, obviously we should all abstain from any and all recreational drugs. It's a fact. No drinking. No smoking. No snorting or huffing. We all want to live long lives, right? That includes marijuana. Anyone telling you it's good for you is obviously a liar. That said, if you had to do something, pot is better than alcohol.

This runs contrary to everything some people know about marijuana. But it doesn't mean we all need to start doing it (simmer down!). It's still bad for you. It's just less bad for you than, say, crack. Is that a good thing?

Still, for those who smoke, this is good news. And let's also recall that marijuana has medical implications as well. So good PR for pot means more cancer patients will get their anti-nausea meds and more materials can be made of hemp. These are all good things.

Research: It changes minds.

Does this change anything for you?

Fisher and her husband, Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen, are expecting their third child this spring. They have two daughters: Olive, 7, and Elula, 4.

The Wedding Crashers star looked gorgeous as she dressed her pregnancy curves in a long blue and white floral gown.

Celebrity mom Amy Adams was also at the Vanity Fair after-party and actually told the magazine that she always gets mistaken for Fisher. "I get Isla Fisher all the time, still. And I know Isla, and for a while our kids went to the same dance school. When I'm with Isla, we both look at one another and … I get it but I don't get it," Adams said.

"Almost here!" she captioned the photo, which shows her holding a sign that says, "35 weeks, 1 day."

Jill and her husband, Derek Dillard, were married June 21, 2014, and they announced their baby news shortly after. The couple, who plan on having a home birth, are expecting a baby boy around March 24.

No word on his baby name, but they have been calling him "Baby Dilly."

Jill recently said that she doesn't plan on sticking with the J-themed baby names like her mother did when she named all 18 of Jill's siblings with names that start with the letter J.

Even though she and Derick aren't sticking with the letter theme, she hinted that she has something in mind.

"We may do some kind of theme, like family names," she said.

More: Valerie Bertinelli is the sixth celebrity to call Christina Aguilera a bitch

The singer will be playing an established pop star named Jade St. John who wants to enter the country music genre (aka the opposite of "The Taylor Swift"), and it very well could be a not-so-subtle message from Aguilera herself that she's interested in expanding her brand.

Her Voice cohost Blake Shelton must be rubbing off on her or, at least, inspiring some healthy competition. "Move over, Blake, you may not be able to play that 'country card' for long," Aguilera joked in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

On a more serious note, Aguilera did admit she is interested in integrating some country style into her music. "I am excited to try something different, as I do think in life, and in music, experience just adds to the creative process."

While Aguilera's character on the show will have a country heart, her record label will want the pop star to stick to the brand they've already built, so she'll face an uphill battle trying to make the music she wants to make.

We have a feeling Rayna James (Connie Britton) might come to the rescue with her record label Highway 65. Rayna is building quite the fleet of strong female artists, after all.

But, of course, it wouldn't be Nashville if it were that easy. There's gotta be some good drama and it looks like Jade will have her eyes set on Jeff Fordham. Last time we saw him, he was getting fired from Edgehill Records, but there might be a silver lining to his dark cloud if he plays his cards right.

According to a Springfield, Illinois, ABC affiliate, sparks won't fly between the two, who have a rocky relationship, which is good with me since I'm team Jeff and Layla all the way. They're super-weird but it somehow works.

Rather than romance, it sounds like Aguilera will be spending her time in Nashville focusing on the music.

Do you think Christina Aguilera should add some country to her songs?

Madonna says ageism is just as bad as racism

The Material Girl, who is now 56 years old, has been getting flak for showing a lot of skin on Instagram — but the pop icon says it is nothing new and she's not going to stop now just because she's no longer 20-something.

"It's still the one area where you can totally discriminate against somebody and talk shit," she said in a new interview with Rolling Stone. "Because of their age. Only females, though. Not males. So in that respect we still live in a very sexist society."

More: Madonna loses fans after altering photos of MLK and Nelson Mandela

"No one would dare to say a degrading remark about being black or dare to say a degrading remark on Instagram about someone being gay," she continued. "But my age — anybody and everybody would say something degrading to me. And I always think to myself, why is that accepted? What's the difference between that and racism, or any discrimination? They're judging me by my age. I don't understand. I'm trying to get my head around it. Because women, generally, when they reach a certain age, have accepted that they're not allowed to behave a certain way. But I don't follow the rules. I never did, and I'm not going to start."

Which would explain why she flashed her ass on the red carpet at the Grammys last month.

"This is what a 56-year-old ass looks like, motherf***ers!" she told the mag.

And when it comes to discrimination, it's not just her appearance she's talking about. A British radio station reportedly refused to play her new single because she doesn't fit the age demographic — but her fans stepped in to let BBC Radio 1 know that Madonna's music is timeless.

One group of students is determined to have the conversation. Chaz Smith, a Vine personality, joined forces with One Student to talk about the role men play in campus assaults and rape culture.

"Our actions are excused, forgot, forgiven and almost always blamed on women," Smith says. "Guys: We are not the offense, and women are not the defense."

"This is real life. These are real lives."

"This problem is not entirely bleak. There is a solution, and there is hope... Speak up, and teach boys and men these three simple things: Love people. Respect people. And do not assault."

I think that's a message everyone can get behind.

Rancic went on air yesterday to not just apologize for her racist remark that Zendaya's dreadlocks must smell like patchouli and weed, but to explain the lesson she has learned from the experience — and that last part is something usually sorely lacking from celebrity mea culpas.

"I just want everyone to know I didn't intend to hurt anybody, but I learned it is not my intent that matters," Rancic said. "It's the result. And the result is that people are offended, including Zendaya. And that is not OK.

"Therefore, I want to say to Zendaya, and anyone else out there that I have hurt, that I am so, so sincerely sorry," she said. "This really has been a learning experience for me. I've learned a lot today, and this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of clichés and stereotypes, [and] how much damage they can do. And that I am responsible, as we all are, to not perpetuate them further. Thank you for listening."

10 Quick and easy Pad Thai hacks that'll make you forget takeout exists

Sometimes tracking down palm sugar, tamarind, fish sauce and rice noodles just isn't an option. Luckily the hacks below will help you have Pad Thai anytime, anywhere.

1. College Pad Thai

college pad thai

Craving your favorite noodle dish but don't have any specialty ingredients on hand? Not to worry, pad thai is still in reach! All it takes is some crunchy peanut butter, Sriracha sauce and ramen — and maybe a squeeze of lime if you have one left over from pounding back Coronas last night.

2. Brown sugar and lime Pad Thai

Traditional pad thai gets its tangy sweetness from tamarind and palm sugar. It can be hard to find either of these ingredients in U.S. grocery stores, but a simple swap is to use brown sugar and lime juice to mimic that same balance of tart and sweet.

3. Nut-free Pad Thai

Does someone in your house have a peanut allergy? If so, you can replace the crunch of chopped peanuts in a variety of ways. Try topping your pad thai with dry-roasted chickpeas or soybeans for a nutty, textural element. If your recipe calls for peanut butter, then you can replace it with some tahini.

4. Pad Thai sandwich

No noodles? No worries! It turns out that with a little maneuvering you can make yourself a mean Pad Thai sandwich instead. It's not quite the same, but you'll still get all the flavors you love from the traditional dish.

5. Fig Pad Thai

Another substitute for tamarind paste? Try blending dried figs with lime juice until you have a sour-sweet paste, then dilute with a little water.

6. Soda Pad Thai

Find yourself without tamarind yet again? Look for Jarrito's brand Tamarindo soda. You can usually find it in the Mexican aisle of the grocery store, and you can often find it at bodegas and convenience stores too. It will add a nice sweet-and-sour kick to your Pad Thai sauce.

7. Low-carb Pad Thai

vegetable noodle pad thai

If you're craving Pad Thai but don't want to screw up your diet by bingeing on noodles, there's still hope! Try Shirataki noodles, made from Japanese yam starch. You can also try using cucumbers or zucchini to make your own veggie noodles.

8. Fettuccine Pad Thai

If you can't find rice noodles at your supermarket (or are just too lazy to go shopping but want dinner, like, now), try using fettuccine or linguine instead. Both are flat like traditional rice noodles, and if you're super hungry, you'll barely notice the difference.

9. Ketchup Pad Thai

It's not authentic, but you'd be surprised how many Thai restaurants use ketchup in their Pad Thai sauce. It's salty, tangy and sweet, making it a good sub for tamarind. Haters, to the left — you just want your pad thai now!

10. Vegan Pad Thai

Pad Thai calls for fish sauce, which isn't vegan, but you can make a passable version without it. Soy sauce, Maggi, miso, Marmite — you want something that packs a lot of umami, and these foods will do it. If you go with miso or Marmite, make sure you dilute them with some water so your sauce stays the same consistency. You might also need to rebalance the sweetness and acid in the recipe if your substitute is saltier than the fish sauce. Just taste as you go.

Your teen shouldn't feel guilty about masturbating

$

0

To fully understand my pro-teen-masturbation stance, you have to understand my background. I grew up in a very, very religious home. My parents were missionaries. My dad was later a pastor. After my parents divorced and my mom remarried, I even attended Bible college as a young adult with my mom and stepdad.

I don't regret my time as a super-Christian — it helped me develop a strong relationship with God that still holds true as I discover myself outside of the religious box. I do regret some of the crazy crap that I was taught as a Christian teen and young adult. This crap is hard to scrape off my shoe and still sticks with me today.

The most vivid story I can remember about how Christianity affected my view of sex goes a little something like this: As a teen, I had never masturbated. I was told flat out at youth group that it was wrong, and even one dirty thought could send you down the slippery slope of porn addiction.

I asked my mom the question, "Is it wrong to masturbate?" To her credit, my mom has now changed her views, but at the time she said, "Yes. The only person who is allowed to touch your body is your husband."

There is so much wrong with that statement that I don't even know where to begin. I was never given the guidance to love and care for my body and my sexuality first of all. I didn't matter because someday I would just grow up to be "the wife." My body would always belong to another.

But the teen abstinence sword cuts both ways. My husband, the son of a lifelong pastor, has a similar story from growing up in a Christian household. As a teenager, my father-in-law found my husband's porn that he had picked up from the trash, as ninth graders are wont to do.

When he discovered the sinful porn that my husband was hoarding, he sat him down and said, "What if these women were your mother?"

Just no. As a parent, I can now see that both of these responses are terrible. I don't necessarily fault our parents at the time, but I do fault strict religion that enforces absolute rules about sex and masturbation.

If you are wondering how and when to talk to your teen about masturbation, do it now. Do it yesterday. Do it often. Thankfully, I have worked through many of these issues and have a very healthy sex life with my husband. But it didn't come easy. I had to knock down walls and challenge stigmas that made me feel guilty for the act of self-pleasure. Now I know that self-pleasure is a great and natural thing and is even necessary to support your sex life.

There aren't many parenting don'ts on my list, but this is a big one: Don't make your teens feel guilty about masturbation and sex. It absolutely will affect them for the rest of their life.

The most common eating disorder is one you didn't know existed

$
0
0

Because OSFED doesn't quite fit under the major pillars of eating disorders recognized by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM), it is much harder to be diagnosed with it. This makes people who have it think they're not nearly as sick as someone with anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating disorder, so they simply continue on with their incredibly harmful lifestyle. As such, the numbers for this elusive disorder continue to rise and now completely outrank the disorders that are most known.

Here are some frightening statistics to give you some perspective. While anorexia affects 1 out of 200 adults, symptoms of OSFED affect 1 out of 20, according to Jennifer J. Thomas on Buzzfeed, Ph.D., co-director of the Eating Disorders Clinical and Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-author of Almost Anorexic. That's a terrifyingly high percentage and definitely not one we should ignore any longer.

"Regardless of diagnosis, the level of pain and distress is the same, and help is available regardless of the number on the scale," said Thomas to Buzzfeed. "Even individuals who look 'normal' can die unexpectedly from complications of purging, including low potassium that causes their hearts to stop."

The biggest problem with eating disorder diagnoses in general is the incredibly specific list of symptoms you must exhibit to fall into one of the major categories. For example, you could be doing everything someone with anorexia does (not eating, missing periods), but if you eat, say, one meal every two days, you might be above the anorexia cutoff of less than 85 percent of what someone your age and height should weigh. You still have a disease, but not one a doctor can clearly designate.

"Patients might feel they are not in need of or deserving of treatment unless they fall into a different category, which can be detrimental to recovery," Rachel Cohen, LCSW, site director at The Renfrew Center of Northern New Jersey, told Buzzfeed.

That in a nutshell is the worst part of OSFED — it allows people who have it to let themselves off the hook, because their symptoms are just shy of a "really serious" eating disorder. But that, in effect, makes it a really serious eating disorder. People with anorexia and bulimia often live in denial of their disease even if it's been diagnosed. Now imagine how long such justifying could go on if you fall somewhere in the grey between "normal" and "sick." With that in mind, the best way to diagnose OSFED (either for yourself or someone you know) is to get familiar with the symptoms. It is a real disease and one that can hang on much longer under the radar than the more recognized eating disorders. Now that there's a name for it, let's haul it out into the open and get to know its ugly face.

OSFED symptoms:

1. Same symptoms as anorexia, except you still get your period

This means you're not eating, you have an intense fear of gaining weight, and you weigh significantly less than a person of your age and size should.

2. Same symptoms as anorexia, but for some reason you're still in the normal weight range

You may have been overweight, lost a significant amount and now appear to be a normal weight for your age and size. Doesn't mean you don't have an eating disorder.

3. Meets all the criteria of bulimia, except doesn't exhibit the symptoms as often

You're binge-eating, purging and/or using "inappropriate compensatory methods" (aka laxatives, excessive exercise, other weight loss meds, etc.), but you're doing it less than twice a week and/or for less than three months. A short-lived and/or less extreme eating disorder is still an eating disorder.

4. You use inappropriate compensatory methods after eating to maintain "normal weight"

Purging after eating an afternoon snack is not something a healthy person does to stay looking good.

5. Tasting your food

Remember that Sex and the City episode where the girls go to LA and Miranda runs into an old writer friend who doesn't actually swallow his food? Yeah, that's an eating disorder, and it's not funny at all.

6. Binge-eating without the purging

Yup, excessive eating without purging is a disease too. Usually it affects people who are trying to fill a void in another part of their lives and would likely feel much better talking to a therapist rather than a carton of Ben and Jerry's.

How you can get help for OSFED

Please, please do not ignore any of these symptoms if you or someone you love exhibits them. There are support groups, doctors and therapists waiting to help — all you have to do is call. Here are some ways to take that first step toward recovery:

  1. Think you might be a compulsive exerciser? Take this handy test to find out: Compulsive Exercise Test.
  2. Visit The Renfrew Center, or dial 1-800-RENFREW for diagnosis and treatment.
  3. Get a free and confidential screening at Almost Anorexic.
  4. Keep track of harmful thoughts about food on the Recovery Record app.

Leave princess-inspired fashion where it belongs – your daughter’s closet

Forgive me, guys, but when it comes to women's fashion — and I do mean women's, not girls' — I'm just about Disney'd out. Every time we turn our backs for a second, some clothing designer or makeup artist is using his or her God-given talent to come up with new ways of making us look like characters that appeal to toddlers (Literally. My 3-year-old is obsessed with Rapunzel).

Lauren Conrad, former queen of Laguna Beach-turned-fashion designer, has always been partial to feminine designs. But her latest collection for Kohl's takes dressing like a princess to new extremes — because it's actually called Disney's Cinderella, a Collection by LC Lauren Conrad.

The most notable thing about her spring collection of dresses, light sweaters and shoes is that there isn't a lot of variation in terms of color: expect to look soft in hues called fawn, marshmallow, ballad blue and heavenly pink.

Conrad didn't hold back when it came to tulle, specifically, layered tulle. Chiffon, which is gorgeous, but probably the second least practical fabric a woman can wear after tulle, also factors heavily in her collection. There's even a cami tank with a bow appliqué. This is exactly how my daughter would choose to dress each day of her life before promptly shredding her clothes into pieces the minute she stepped out of the house to roll around in the grass.

Honestly, Conrad's collection is pretty. With the exception of three tops — a sweater that features a glass slipper, a chiffon T-shirt with Cinderella's image on it and a tank top that reads "Once Upon a Time" — the princess influence is subtle.

Cinderella clothing line

So, why use Cinderella to promote it?

The answer is obvious: A lot of grown women still get a kick out of dressing like Disney princesses. Cinderella (and Belle and Ariel) sell. Everyone from wedding gown designers to MAC are getting in on the craze. The message is clear: F*** middle age. F*** Sophia Loren. And, if you want to keep the focus on Disney, f*** Maleficent. I am a princess, hear me be as totally silent as a tree.

I believe women have the right to dress however they want. But I'd be lying if I said I understood our obsession with youth culture or why some women want to wear Mickey Mouse jumpers. Say what you will about Kim Kardashian, but when she's wearing clothes, the woman dresses like a woman. Designer Carolina Herrera is a master at creating strong, but incredibly feminine styles that make women look their age — which is a good thing, despite what we've been brainwashed to believe. It can be done and it can be done well.

When little girls, even the ones who wish they could hang out in Elsa's dress all day long, parade around in mommy's heels and grown-up dresses, it makes total sense. Grown women in Cinderella shirts? Not so much.

1. Critics love her

Johnson sold it with her performance in Fifty Shades of Grey. The Wrap described her as "vivacious," Newsday called her "fetching" and the New York Daily News said her performance "smart" and "convincing." In other words, whether you liked the movie or not, Johnson kind of nailed it.

2. She was Miss Golden Globe 2006

Johnson has a long history with the Globes. Her mother Melanie Griffith was Miss Golden Globe in 1975, which made Johnson the first second-generation Miss Golden Globe. She's also the third generation involved with the Globes in her family. Her grandmother Tippi Hedren won the award for Most Promising Newcomer in 1964.

3. She isn't just an actress

Aside from acting, Johnson was a dancer growing up, and she models. Most recently, she was the face of Mango Jeans in 2009.

4. She doesn't have social media

She may have appeared in a little movie called The Social Network (as Justin Timberlake's bed buddy), but that doesn't mean she's into the online fame. Johnson doesn't have Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

5. She successfully completed rehab in 2007

Johnson's path to success hasn't come without some bumps in the road. In 2007 she was admitted and completed a 30-day program for drug and alcohol addiction at Visions Adolescent Treatment Center in Malibu.

6. She landed Fifty Shades with a sexy monologue

According to Elite Daily, Johnson read a monologue from the Ingmar Bergman film Persona, which is super-sexually explicit and, apparently, just what Fifty Shades producers were looking for.

7. She has no shame

Johnson told Elle she was up for the racy role of Anastasia Steele because "I don't have any problem doing anything. The secret is I have no shame."

Secret is out!

8. Her film debut was a family affair

Johnson made her first appearance on-screen in 1999 in the film Crazy in Alabama. She and her half-sister Stella Banderas played daughters to their real-life mother Griffith. As if that isn't true enough to life, Antonio Banderas, Johnson's stepfather, also directed the film.

9. She doesn't want to talk about her dad, OK?

"It's not necessarily annoying. I've come to understand the allure of that to other people, how it seems so interesting and different," Johnson told Interview magazine of her Miami Vice star dad Don Johnson and her actress mom Griffith. "But for me it's just my family, it's the way I grew up and it's my mom and my dad. It doesn't really bother me because I get it, but sometimes it's kind of a drag to talk about."

10. She's all about some juice

Forget cleansing, Johnson just wants to sip on some fresh-squeezed goodness throughout the day. According to Popsugar, during Fifty Shades filming, she and director Sam Taylor-Johnson were hooked.

11. She's not really a gym rat but is serious about staying healthy

Johnson admitted that in the past she didn't have a regular gym regimen, but it was important for her to be in shape for Fifty Shades, given all the nakedness. According to the same article by Popsugar, the scantily clad scenes were enough to get her in the gym, as was her boyfriend at the time, Jordan Masterson.

12. She's hilarious

Aside from appearing in The Office and starring in Ben and Kate, her funny bone is making its way to SNL next for a hosting gig that's sure to deliver. Just check out these promos in case you need more convincing.
