Madonna at the Brit Awards 2015: Why you shouldn't wear a cape

0
0

Madonna last performed on the Brits stage in 1995, delivering an impeccable rendition of "Bedtime Stories". This time around, it wasn't quite so flawless. The 56-year-old crashed down three stairs during her closing performance of "Living For Love", after her long cape was pulled by a backup dancer. The ironic part is that she was singing the lyrics: "Not gonna stop, gonna carry on" at the time.

More: Madonna says ageism is just as bad as racism

What made Madonna's fall even more excruciating to watch was that she dropped her mic and missed several of the following lyrics. For a split second, it wasn't clear what was going to happen next. But at least we know she was singing live, right?

However, this is Madonna, and she's nothing if not the consummate professional. Pesky cape discarded, she picked herself up, carried on, and finished the track on a high.

She even took the time to reassure her fans after the show — via Instagram, of course:

ANTM model dies at 19 and the homicide details are shocking

Puhar, who competed on the 21st cycle of ANTM in 2014 but was eliminated in the 10th episode, was killed Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the home of her boyfriend, who was also murdered — along with a third person.

A source told TMZ that the Serbian stunner was found by a friend who went to check up on her when another pal reported hearing gunshots in the home. The friend of the couple called police to report finding the bodies of Puhar and her boyfriend and described seeing money scattered throughout the house. Cops later found the third victim.

More: Longtime CBS anchor Bob Simon killed in crash

The other two killed were Jonathan Cosme Alvarado and Jusmar Isiah Gonzaga-Garcia. It is unclear which man Puhar was dating.

Charlotte police have arrested Emmanuel Jesus Rangel and charged him with three counts of first degree murder. Law enforcement sources told TMZ they believe the killings are drug-related.

Rangel has also been charged in another murder earlier this week. Rasool Jaleel Harrell was shot to death in a car behind a Charlotte-area hotel Sunday and Rangel, along with two others, has been arrested.

"We don't know for sure [if the two cases are related]" said Matthews, Charlotte, police officer Tim Aycock, "[but] it's very suspicious that the same guy is charged."

The ANTM family is in shock over Puhar's brutal killing and is working out their grief on Twitter, including the winner of Puhar's cycle, Keith Carlos.

10 Precious moments you will not enjoy while parenting

Every parent looks forward to the next stage of growth, but be warned — these milestones are not all they are cracked up to be.

1. Sleeping in his own crib

Brad Pitt

Image: Giphy.com

You move your little guy from a bassinet in your room to his very own crib down the hall. My, how time flies… Here's what you can really expect: Nonstop crying and whimpering coupled with your crippling anxiety as you keep your eyes locked on the video monitor all night long.

2. Holding a rattle

Nene

Image: Giphy.com

The first time that your baby learns to grasp an object and play with it is kind of a big deal. Please remember this precious moment when you have an 18-month-old toddler who likes to hit you with LEGOs.

3. Learning to roll over

Nicki Minaj

As cute as it might be, rolling over is just one step closer to the terror that is a crawling baby.

4. Eating solids

Dog treat

Aw, your widdle bundle of joy is eating real people food! Fast-forward two months later, and he will be throwing globs of it on the floor with abandon.

5. Learning to crawl

Awkward

Image: Giphy.com

Can you believe he's crawling already? You'll believe it when the exhaustion sets in after chasing your active crawler around the living room for hours.

6. Cutting his first tooth

Hilary Duff

Don't worry — your excited wonderment will soon wear off when you realize that teething equals nonstop crying, diarrhea and irritability.

7. Saying his first word

Shut up

Image: Giphy.com

This might just be the most special milestone for a parent, but it's also the most dangerous. In two short years, you'll be wishing he had just one word in his extensive vocabulary.

8. Learning to walk

John Goodman

Every parent clamors to catch this joyous milestone on video. Savor it — before you find out the hard way that a walking toddler means your house will never look the same again.

9. Learning to climb

Michelle Obama

Let's be real — there is not one sane parent out there who thinks that a climbing toddler is adorable. Not a one.

10. Learning to run

"Wow, he's so strong and so fast. He must get that from his father." You might have to wipe that smug smile off your face when you lose your sprinting toddler at the grocery store yet again.

Daniel Haslam dies, but fight to legalise medicinal marijuana goes on

0
0

That thing is medicinal marijuana, and thanks to one man, the conversation about its legalisation is being had in Australia. Daniel Haslam died surrounded by his family on Tuesday, after suffering from an aggressive form of bowel cancer for more than four years.

With the support of his mother, Lucy, a former nurse, and his father, Lou, a former drug squad detective, Haslam created a national campaign to legalise marijuana for medicinal purposes.

He sparked the debate and gave politicians and the general public a chance to peer into how the effects of marijuana bring an added quality of life to those suffering during bouts of chemotherapy.

The nausea, the vomiting — Haslam questioned why a vaporiser couldn't be attached to each chemotherapy chair, why people weren't being given the substance that could mean the difference between living and feeling alive.

Thanks to the efforts of Haslam and his mum, as well as the "Dan's Story" campaign, the New South Wales government decriminalised small amounts of medical cannabis for cancer patients.

"We will keep fighting for medical cannabis and make it freely available to people who need it," Lucy said, following her son's death.

But following a moving speech in parliament last June, changes have been made and new policies are being put forward.

"As parents of three sons, Lou and I have always been opposed to recreational drug use," Lucy said during her parliamentary speech.

"I resent that in a country where we can provide heroin-injecting rooms and needle exchanges, where our government collects taxes from cancer-causing tobacco and the biggest killer of all, alcohol, we are forced into criminality because our son is unlucky enough to be one of the thousands who has, through no fault of his own, contracted a life-threatening disease," she said.

More than 59,000 members of the NSW Nurse and Midwives' Association supported the cause and agreed that patients who suffer from chronic pain could benefit from the medicinal use of marijuana.

Since Daniel's passing, an outpouring of support has been shared from politicians and the public alike. Haslam paid a big price, but his legacy is sure to live on, here's how:

  • In 2014, NSW premier, Mike Baird, announced the NSW government's support of medicinal marijuana after hearing about Daniel's story.
  • In December last year, $9 million was allocated to three trials on medicinal marijuana and how it affects patients suffering from pain and illness.
  • The Greens' Richard Di Natale has seen the formation of a regulatory body to control the growth and distribution of cannabis for those suffering a terminal illness or undergoing chemotherapy.

What it really takes to be a postmodern parent

0
0

It seems nothing is off-limits when it comes to sharing the ups and downs of parenting, especially in the digital world in which we live. Just yesterday, I saw my best friend's baby girl take her very first wobbly steps, all from a video posted on Facebook.

Parenting site, Netmums, has had a bit of a look into the habits of postmodern parents and their findings reveal that mums today love sharing, and even oversharing, some of the most intimate moments from their parenting lives.

Here are some of the parenting trends they found. Are you a postmodern parent? Here's how to see the signs.

Brelfies

Postmodern parents 1

Postmodern parents 1

Selfies with bub are so last season. The hottest family snaps to share with your online community are breastfeeding selfies. Celebrities like Miranda Kerr and Gisele Bündchen are said to have started the trend, posing glamorously with babes suckling at their chests. But now the brelfie craze has hit the masses, although without the makeup teams, the studio lighting and the professional photographers to get the best shot.

Pee parties

Postmodern parents 2

Postmodern parents 2

If you're hosting a pregnancy test pee party, then you are just about as postmodern as they get. The gist of the party is this: Instead of waiting to tell friends and family that you're expecting after a few months of being up the duff, the party is a way of telling people straightaway, as soon as you pee on that stick and see those two glorious lines. Pop the champagne! Oh, wait. Better not.

Post-baby body snaps

Postmodern parents 3

Postmodern parents 3

"Post-baby body" sounds like it's straight from the pages of a tabloid mag. But instead of the pressure and judgement that comes with talking about post-baby body photos, women are taking back being body beautiful and sharing photos of their bodies how they are.

Combined baby names

Postmodern parents 4

Postmodern parents 4

The true sign of a postmodern parent has to come from what name they call their child. And one trend that has emerged this year is using two names and then mashing them together. "If you love Jennifer and Isabel, go for Jennibel. Easy," Netmums says.

Baby growth photos and videos

It takes some planning and a whole lot of patience, but some incredible child-growth videos and photos have popped up online. It's kind of like the movie Boyhood, only better.

Every GIF of Taylor Swift audience dancing that you could ever want

She gives back to her fans, she gives to communities, she gives to those in need and, sometimes, she gives to people just for the heck of it. But there's one thing that Swifty has bestowed on the world time and time again that doesn't get nearly enough recognition: the gift of dance.

Award show after award show, the girl entertains us by shamelessly cutting a rug in the audience while her colleagues perform on stage. Swifty's got more moves than a barrel of monkeys and it's almost to the point that she needs to put a trademark on some of those gyrations, like she did with her lyrics.

These authors prove that a few minutes of writing a day can add up

A few short minutes

One of our very successful writers, Diane Stark, talked about this process in her story called "A Few Short Minutes" in our book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Writers. Diane had an epiphany, comparing writing to football: "A touchdown is nothing more than getting the ball across the field, yard by precious yard. Sometimes it happens in one amazing, record-setting pass. Other times, it occurs more slowly, just a few yards at a time." But six points are six points, right? She said, "I thought about all the little blocks of time in my life that I thought were too short to use. I realized they were too long to waste. My life circumstances don't provide me with many big chunks of time to write. So I needed to use the small chunks productively."

She started writing a few minutes at a time, and reported, "Finally, minute by minute, word by word, I was writing. I was submitting my work and getting it accepted. It was my own personal end zone, and it felt nothing less than amazing."

Image: Chicken Soup for the Soul

The man in the green pickup

Anna S. Redsand had another story on the same theme in the same book. "The Man in the Green Pickup" was about a man who wrote in his truck every day during his lunch break. He only had 15 minutes left by the time he finished eating, but he diligently wrote on a yellow legal pad, and after two years he had written a book and found a publisher. This motivated Anna, a single mother working full time as a school counselor, to write the inspirational book for teens she had in mind. She realized that she had a 20-minute window of opportunity every morning before she left for work. That was five minutes more than the man in the green truck. According to Anna, "Those 20 minutes a day turned me into the writer I am today." It took her two years to complete her book, Viktor Frankl: A Life Worth Living, but she did, and it was published by Clarion Books.

The English writer Charles Caleb Colton said, "Much may be done in those little shreds and patches of time which every day produces, and which most men throw away." I think that holds true for all our endeavors, not just writing.

‘Notebook Couple’ spends final moments alive proving true love is real

0

"We could tell my dad was in a lot more pain," their daughter Donna Scharton told Good Morning America. "We said 'it's getting close,' so we pushed the hospital beds together as far as we could. We put their hands together, and my dad died holding my mom's hand. Mom was not coherent, but we told her that Dad had passed away and that he was waiting for her. She died five hours later."

My papa passed when I was very young, but I still remember my dad breaking the news to me. My nana, who he always called his dove, lived many years after him. They had been high school sweethearts who married other people and when my papa came back from the Navy, they reunited. When my nana eventually passed from lung cancer, our family collectively knew she was ready to go be with her sweetheart again.

So, cheesy as it may sound, I think you fight as long and hard as you can until you realize you'll be more content where you're going because something or someone is waiting for you. In the case of Floyd and Violet, neither of them wanted a life without the other and that ran so deep, they both knew it was time.

To put it in Donna's words, "What we felt was keeping them alive was the will to live, and that they didn’t want to let go of each other."

The Americans: Phillip better not cross the line with Kimmy

0
0

You know The Americans' sweet spot, right? It’s that spot where they remind you just how much Phillip and Elizabeth’s responsibility to their country contradicts their responsibility to their consciences. The whole season’s tackling this contradiction head-on with Paige’s seemingly inevitable initiation into the world of being a Russian spy. But last night’s episode took this to a new level as Phillip’s relationship with Kimmy progressed.

While I usually finding myself siding with Phillip and Elizabeth when it comes to their targets, Kimmy's pushing the boundaries for me. Which is exactly what her character's designed to do. At just 15 years old, she’s the youngest person Phillip’s ever had to seduce. If this was an episode of Law & Order: SVU, I’d be yelling stranger danger at my TV to Kimmy because it would be clear-cut that Phillip’s a bad guy. But this isn’t SVU, it’s The Americans — a show that’s been blurring the line between good guy and bad guy since the very first episode.

More: 15 Strongest, most jaw-dropping and fearless female performances of 2014

Even though we’ve seen Phillip do horrible things — most recently stuffing a woman’s dead body into a suitcase like an old pro — we still view him as a good guy. Because when he’s not plotting against America, manipulating innocent people and straight up murdering people, he's a stand-up guy. I know, I know, everything I said earlier in that previous sentence negates that, but that’s exactly what makes The Americans so great. Even though he’s made it clear time and time again that he’s loyal to the Motherland, he’s also made it clear that he’s loyal to his family. A family that includes his very American children, Paige and Henry.

From the moment Phillip set foot in Kimmy’s house last night to the moment that he fled, I pleaded with my TV, “Don’t do it, Phillip!” And except for Kimmy’s sneak-attack of a kiss, Phillip didn’t do it. It, of course, being taking the relationship to the next level. However, it feels almost inevitable after last night’s episode (and next week’s teasers) that Phillip’s going to take the relationship past the kissing stage. I’m praying that I’m wrong because I very much want to stay on Team Phillip.

More: Is Keri Russell dating her costar Matthew Rhys?

Sleeping with Kimmy, or really going any further than he’s already gone, wouldn’t just blur the good guy/bad guy lines more, it would straight up destroy them. I can forgive a lot (and I most certainly have), but I couldn’t look at Phillip the same way if he really went through with seducing a teenage girl. And not just any teenage girl, but one who he so clearly identifies with his own daughter. I mean, that similarity could not have been hammered home any harder in the episode.

So here’s hoping that Phillip finds a way to avoid going any further with Kimmy so he remains a good guy. And here’s also hoping that Kimmy never finds out his real intentions for pursuing her. Being a teenage girl is hard enough without discovering that a middle-aged Russian spy’s hitting on you to get to your CIA father — who you don’t even know is in the CIA. Yeah, good luck to her future therapist.

Brelfies: The not-so-new breastfeeding trend taking Facebook by storm

0
0

What's so revolutionary about this? Nothing, really. Brelfie is a clever, funny term for something moms have been doing online for years — even back when selfies were still called "MySpace pics."

breastfeeding selfie

breastfeeding selfie

Brelfies are in the spotlight now thanks to moms posting nursing photos as a form of protest over Facebook's tendency to pull down photos of breastfeeding moms. Most women agree that censoring breastfeeding sexualizes and stigmatizes the act of feeding a baby. There's nothing obscene about breastfeeding, so why make it a shameful or shocking thing?

Some attribute the breastfeeding selfie trend to celebrity mom brelfies, but the truth is, women have been doing this for as long as they've been able to post pictures online.

Some women share breastfeeding pictures in support and solidarity. "I have shared in a variety of breastfeeding and parenting groups to encourage and support other women," says Anne Younger, a mom from Wisconsin.

Many moms seek to normalize something that continues to be characterized as shocking. California mom Janelle Hanchett says, "I share nursing photos regularly on my blog (which averages 300,000 views a month) and on social media (Instagram), for one reason: Normalize it. I only put those stats in there to make clear that I'm sharing in front of thousands of people. Literally. Don't care."

Others share photos in celebration. "I actually had professional photos taken when our family photographer offered breastfeeding mini session. I even posted a few on Facebook for family and friends," says Virginia mom Stephanie Himel-Nelson. "I think it's important to normalize breastfeeding but I also want to make sure I remember this special time."

And some women post brelfies in good old-fashioned protest, especially when mothers are criticized for breastfeeding in public or breastfeeding without using a cover.

While everyone may be talking about brelfies right now, nursing moms know the trend is timeless. Why? Because breastfeeding is just another part of life — a beautiful activity that's as normal to document as standing in front of the bathroom mirror before going out on the town.

The fact that people continue to criticize breastfeeding photos at all is all the more reason to continue posting them. Bravo to all the moms who post brelfies, even if they're stuck with a really silly buzzword for now.

More: Robin Williams' son Zak finally opens up about life without his dad

On Thursday, Feb. 26, during an interview with Kate Snow for the Today Show, Zelda revealed that it's still going to take time before she will be able to lead a happy life.

"It's going to take a lot of work to allow myself to have the sort of fun, happy life that I had, but that's important. Anybody who has ever lost anyone works very hard to continue that memory in a positive way," she explained.

Zelda, who is Williams' daughter with his second wife, Marsha Garces, also commented on the love that the world showed her dad, saying, "They knew a dad that he was proud of them knowing, because he was an incredibly kind and incredibly caring man. And he was also very private and very calm and very subdued, and so the side of him that people know and love and that is attached to their childhood is the characters that he had so much fun being. And that's what's important. And I do think that's what a lot of people will hold on to. That's not going anywhere."

After her dad's passing, Zelda paid tribute to him with a hummingbird tattoo, an animal that reminds her of him — and the handiwork of popular Hollywood tattoo artist Dr. Woo.

"Hummingbirds are fun and flighty and strange. It's hard to keep them in one place and Dad was a bit like that. Keeping a conversation in one moment was impossible with him," she explained of her ink.

Naomi Campbell's reason for attacking a cameraman was fair (VIDEO)

More: Naomi Campbell searches for a supermodel on The Face

During a 15-second video that was posted on NBC News' Facebook page, Campbell is seen out and about on the streets of Cuba. In the beginning of the footage, the model looks like she's adjusting her hat to hide her face, but it's game over once she spots a cameraman. She immediately walks up to him, grabs the camera and demands that he stops filming. At time of press, the video had racked up more than 95,000 views and we can only expect that the number will grow from there.

Sure, Campbell created the story herself by grabbing the camera and having a fit in front of the lens. I mean, she could have just kept it moving or told someone from her entourage to approach the cameraman from the beginning, but there is a sense of invasion that's going on and it's simply wrong. It's a tale as old as time, but this issue is going to stay relevant as long as the paparazzi keep on hounding these folks.

Thankfully, SheKnows and plenty of other websites have partaken in the #NoKidsPolicy wave, which urges people to stop supporting publications that run unauthorized photos of celebrity children. It's a step in the right direction and will hopefully create something that helps these adults out in the long run too. Until then, Naomi, just try and keep your head up high and anger to a minimum.

10 Tried-and-true tips to get you out of your dating rut

0

If any of the below ring true... read on:

  1. You're sick of being single!
  2. You're stuck in a dating dry spell.
  3. You haven't had a decent date with a good guy in a long time.
Did you think "yup that's me!" to any of the above three? Then chances are you are putting out some pretty non-inviting vibes, intentionally or not.

It's time to emerge from the rut and embody a sexy, sassy, seductive, attract-any-guy-I-want attitude!

Does that sound intimidating?

Maybe even impossible?

It's not.

Here's how to get back in the groove and on your game

1. Ask yourself: "would I date me?"

I want you to ask yourself this question: "Would I date myself?" Take an honest look at who you are, how you act, what issues from your past linger in your present, do you engage in self-sabotaging activities, is your inner voice your best friend or worst enemy, are you comfortable being you, what do you stand for... ? Before being ready to be in a healthy relationship, you have to focus on you first. Accept or fix your issues. Embrace your baggage. And work on becoming your best self. Once you are able to look at yourself and think "Yeah, I'd date me. I'm a pretty fantastic catch... " then do the next step.

2. Change your mind and your heart and life will follow

Don't "try" to enjoy yourself. Don't "try" to get out of your box. Just do it. Make a decision. "Trying" is a pre-emptive excuse for failure or not doing it at all. Do your best. Have zero excuses. If you don't find success, make a mid-course correction and try a different tack. Keep at it until you do find success.

3. Put out the old flames and light a new fire

It's time to clear out old flames and residual baggage! Out with the old and in with the new, attractive and incredibly exciting. Think about who in your life have you been holding onto for really no reason at all. Who doesn't serve you anymore? Who is more of a burden? Who transformed from being a crush to just a crutch? Who makes you feel used? Who is just a booty call to you (or you are to them)? Think about... is being a booty call serving me? Is it hurting me? You've heard the saying that you can't open a new door until the old door is shut. Time to clear those closets of old baggage and refresh your love life. Why? Because you deserve to be happy and fulfilled. You deserve to love and be loved. Starting now!

4. Get a mirror

If you can't figure out why you keep attracting these guys who are manic, obsessive, partiers, workaholics or lacking drive and direction, look in the mirror. The people you attract are often a reflection of yourself, a mirror image. Think about if you really want a mirror image of you. Would you date yourself? Fix yourself first. Then you'll attract a great guy, just as great as you.

5. Get clear on your core values

Before you are truly ready to find the right guy for you, you first have to take a real, deep, hard, honest look at yourself. Who are you? What's most important to you? Where do you stand when it comes to priorities in life? What do you stand for? What are your core values, the values that you will not budge on? They are your foundation. Once you are clear on that, then you will better be able to decipher if your potential guy's beliefs align with yours, if you stand on the same ground. Need some help in this department? Let's work together to figure out who you are, what you stand for, what your best self is, what your weaknesses are within each core value, how you can actualize them and how to be on purpose with your overall dating goals by focusing on each core value first.

6. Get a life

You complete me is horses***. You don't want him to be the center of your universe. And he doesn’t want to be that either. "But every guy wants to be doted on by their partner... " you think. Well, doting is one thing. Needy and having your world revolve around his is another. Not to mention that it's a lot of pressure! And it's anything but sexy.

So what is sexy? Having a life.

In other words...

  • You're busy, driven, self-sufficient and autonomous with your own interests.
  • You're interesting. You have things going on that contribute to high-quality conversations.
  • You have something to contribute to the relationship.

How do you get a life? By expanding your interests. Taking classes. Getting out of your box. Trying one thing new every single day. Find your passion. Take up a hobby that excites you. Become excited about your career again. As Katy Perry says: "Stand for something, or you will fall for everything."

7. Be "that chick"

You know that chick who enters a room and you (and everyone else) can't help but notice her? What is it about her that attracts so much attention? What energy does she radiate? How does she carry herself? What is she wearing? What type of facial expression does she present? How does she make you feel? Generally "that chick" is smiling. She is confident. Her chin is up, shoulders back and she makes eye contact with everyone. She is warm and invites others to be in her presence. She is deliberate with her moves, almost catlike. Instead of pushing her energy out and at you, she pulls you into hers. She might not be a natural beauty, but she takes care of herself and is well put together whether she is in jeans and a T-shirt or an evening gown.

I want you to get a very clear picture of "that chick" in your mind. Then write down her traits, give her a name and finally embody that chick when you go out.

8. Get out there!

Gym junkie? Get outside and learn something new: hike, walk the boardwalk, go to the ice rink, join a snow-shoeing meetup group. Work different muscles and have an open heart. Sweating together has been shown to initiate chemistry.

Try a new place. Instead of going to the bar where "everyone knows your name," try a new place. Talk to people. Ask questions as if you're a tourist; we tend to be more social when on vacation.

Take a class in a topic that doesn't interest you. Intimidated by technology? Go to the Apple store and take one of their group classes. Enroll in a CPR class. Try a cooking workshop. Have a positive attitude and be open to learning (and meeting someone).

Talk about what you know. Wine snob? Go to a big wine store and walk around perusing the bottles. If you see a potential partner who looks lost or confused, offer some suggestions.

9. Get online

Online dating is a strategy. It requires prequalifying, specific questions asked and profile mapping. I know it's a "whole new dating world out there... " and I can help make it not just less scary, but fun. If you've never done it, you might be intimidated by it. If you've done it and had a bad experience with it, you might be repelled by it. If you believe that the best way to meet your Mr Right is "naturally" where you will have a better gauge of your chemistry before committing to a date, you might be dismissive of it.

Get over it.

Online dating gives you the opportunity to date... a lot! Translation: Practice makes perfect right? Plus, you will develop an attitude of abundance, possibly the most powerful tool.

10. Get an attitude of abundance

Even if you aren’t dating several guys and you really don't have any other viable prospects, you still need to have an attitude of abundance. The operative word being "attitude." This is about putting off the energy that, while you think this guy is fantastic and you truly do hope it works with him, there truly are plenty of fish in the sea and you can easily pull another guy just as great or better than he is if need be. An attitude of abundance is an attitude of confidence. It's a knowing that you are a valuable commodity. Yes, you are worth something. As is your time and the energy that you put into the moment of being on this date. To clarify: An attitude of abundance is not an attitude of arrogance. It is not about juggling, screwing with, messing with or being careless with multiple minds and hearts. Sure you might be dating multiple people at once, but the purpose is to become clear with what you need and want in a partner, honing in then making a choice. After all, how can you make a selection if you don't have any options?

8 Seriously creepy things that happen when you're pregnant

0
0

If I can be honest for a moment, pregnancy is still a scary concept to me. I mean, you're literally growing a parasite inside you — granted it will turn out to be an adorable parasite (hopefully) — but it's a parasite all the same. It feeds off your energy and the food you ingest, adds a good amount of weight to your frame, and then after nine months, it gets so big it must force its way out of you through a small, very sensitive opening. Moms, I truly don't know how you did it/keep doing it, but needless to say, I'm impressed.

Then there are these fun videos that keep surfacing that would traumatize anyone who hasn't actually been through pregnancy themselves. Every time I see one, I try so hard to remember the squirming thing under the woman's skin is actually an adorable little baby and not a soulless, sharp-fanged demon spawn. One thing that really helps is hearing the parents laughing. I mean, if they're finding the whole situation amusing, everything has to be totally cool and normal, right? Right? In this particular video, the baby must have just heard his favorite song on the radio, because he has got some serious moves.

Pregnant belly

Pregnant belly

Yep, that's a completely normal, natural pregnancy, gals. It might look like that scene in Alien right before the alien bursts through the guy's torso, but don't worry, that probably won't happen here. Babies like being inside their moms too much to do that to them, plus they don't have the necessary teeth for it.

However, feisty in-womb babies is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of weird things expectant mothers go through during pregnancy. This is the other reason I'm nervous about letting a baby rent out my uterus for nine months. I am a huge worrier, thus anything out of the ordinary — you know, besides a small human growing inside me — would have me on the phone, crying to my doctor at all hours of the day and night. So for myself and all the other hypochondriacs out there, here is a list of some of the weirdest/scariest pregnancy symptoms that are 100 percent normal.

1. You leak all the time

Image: Gifsoup

Being pregnant means you're going to be peeing. A lot. Not only are you instructed to drink a ton of water, but there's a large, growing thing bouncing around on your bladder all day long. Chances are you will have little accidents when you sneeze, laugh, turn over, etc. Best advice: Let it happen, and be prepared with pads/extra underwear/a strong sense of humor.

2. Ridiculous, grandfather-style snoring

Image: Nick Wilkes via Flickr

Is your partner shaking you awake at night as if he or she is trying to exorcise the demons out of you? Well, chances are you've taken up a snoring habit that rivals the largest of potbellied pigs. Try some Simply Saline spray, prop yourself up, and get friendly with a body pillow, or get used to being poked repeatedly by someone other than your growing fetus.

3. You're drooling all over the place

Image: Giphy

No, you haven't lost control of your motor functions. Just another fun symptom of having all that water in your body. Well, that and the spiking hormones coursing through you. Try drinking acidic things like lemon and reducing your carb intake for this one.

4. You have spider veins like a body builder

Image: Giphy

Now, while it might look like you're about to explode into the Hulk, this is actually just a side effect of increased blood flow, because your body is pumping blood to two of you now. Nothing really to do about them while you're pregnant except freaking people out by saying, "You won't like me when I'm angry." They usually start to fade postpartum.

5. Tasting metal

Image: Giphy

This one would totally freak me out, because I'd be sure I was about to have a stroke, but apparently it's quite common among pregnant folk. It's another effect of raised hormone levels — unless you keep mints in your change purse, then it's just an effect of Messy Bag Syndrome.

6. Freaky, flying saucer-size nipples

Image: Giphy

Not only will your nipples force a hostile takeover of your breasts, they will become super dark and even sprout little bumps that can produce liquid, like tiny, gross skin volcanoes! This is an example of hyperpigmentation from hormones (again... thanks, hormones!), and some think it happens to make it easier for your baby to find his or her way to your nipple for feeding. But don't fret, they will shrink back to normal size once you stop nursing, though they might always be slightly darker than before.

7. Suddenly low, raspy voice

Image: Giphy

If you suddenly experience a voice change like you're a boy going through puberty, don't fret. Your balls aren't dropping; you're just a woman carrying a baby. "Changes in estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy can cause swelling in your vocal cords, which can cause you to sound different when speaking or singing." So if you find you're suddenly a base, go out and start a blues band, girl! Work those sexy pipes!

8. Bloody, bloody gums

Image: Giphy

This sounds like one of those terrible nightmares in which all your teeth fall out, but again, totally ordinary and regular in the world of pregnancy. Increased blood flow and hormone changes cause your gums to swell, get puffy and, yes, bleed on occasion. You may even notice nodules called "pregnancy tumors" (seriously, who decided on this terrifying term?) on your gums, but they're harmless and will disappear postpartum. Just be gentle when you brush, and try switching to softer brush bristles and sensitive toothpaste.

How Kylie Jenner was able to afford that $2.7 million mansion

0
0

The 17-year-old just dropped a reported $2.7 million on a Calabasas, California, mansion just blocks from the homes of her sisters and mom, and it is absolutely stunning. For that price it had better be, right? But perhaps a better question is, how does a 17-year-old buy a house like that?

More: 8 Kylie Jenner belfies that put Kim Kardashian's booty to shame (PHOTOS)

Let's look back at her career thus far. Kylie has appeared on Keeping Up With the Kardashians since 2007, as well as the spin-offs Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami, Khloé and Lamar, Kourtney and Kim Take Miami and Kourtney and Khloé Take the Hamptons. She got a cut of the OPI Kardashian Kolors nail polish collection, plus has her own hair extension biz. She and sister Kendall have a PacSun fashion collection, a jewelry line with Pascal Mouawad's Glamhouse, a shoe and handbag line with Steve Madden and last year they released a YA novel, Rebels: City of Indra.

But the timing of this purchase makes the real source of Kylie's cash clear. According to Page Six, the Kardashians have just inked a huge — and we mean huge — deal with E! for another four years of KUWTK as well as its various spin-offs. How much, exactly? Inside sources say the deal is worth $100 million.

"You'll be seeing a lot more of the Kardashian family," the source said. "This is a huge deal, which will see their involvement with the network and its digital properties expand well into the future."

So that means Kylie surely got a huge piece of the pie, since E! is said to be putting more focus on the younger generation of the clan.

More: Kylie Jenner is set to take over the world

Of course, since Kylie is a minor (and she doesn't seem to be emancipated) she can't just waltz into a bank and sign on the dotted line herself. We assume she had at least a little help from Kris and Bruce Jenner, or at least one of the two. Even if she is paying for the plush pad with her own cash, at least one of her parents would have to cosign, attorney John Kenney told Realtor.com.

"She cannot legally make the contract to purchase the house unless she is emancipated. But I'm sure it was her money that paid for it," he said. "She is the recipient of being inside an amazingly smart family," he said. "At the end of the day, Kardashians know how to make money — this is just another example."

Can Kris Jenner be our manager, please?

Coffee shop owner asks breastfeeding mom to cover up

Breastfeeding mother asked to cover up

Breastfeeding mother asked to cover up

Stephanie Scott and her friend Amberly Worley visited an Austin, Texas, coffee shop, toting along their two babies. Worley's baby needed to nurse, so she breastfed him, but she was soon approached by the coffee shop owner, who offered her a towel and asked if she wanted to cover up. When the owner, Sandy Hughes, was asked if breastfeeding made her uncomfortable, she told the pair that it didn't, but it might make the men in the area uneasy.

Scott, knowing that breastfeeding in public is legal in the state of Texas, took to the shop's Facebook page with the complaint that the business didn't support breastfeeding moms. The review she wrote quickly went viral, especially when a representative of the company responded and mansplained her experience away. The company then came under attack by many who were outraged by their customer relations misstep.

Thankfully, the company has posted an apology to their Facebook page in response. Hughes owns up to her error and says that the shop welcomes breastfeeding mothers, as they are legally obligated to do.

Moms — don't mind the people who cry for mothers to cover up, to go to the bathroom or to leave the premises of public places. Don't pay attention to those who say that moms with babies that need to breastfeed should pump and feed from bottles, or worse yet, just stay home. The only time you need to acknowledge anything like this is when an employee or owner of an establishment is the one saying it, because in nearly all cases across the U.S., it's blatantly against the law.

People in those positions should be aware of the law and they should ensure that all employees and representatives are thoroughly trained in it as well. Even though this company has apologized, and this is fantastic, it never should have happened in the first place. Hopefully, with more awareness, it will happen less and less.

No kneading, no rising and flavor rivaling the homemade stuff make store-bought refrigerated pizza dough a workhorse in both savory and sweet recipes. I prefer the kind that comes in a bag, but you can use the canned variety for many of these recipes too.
