15-Year-old girl shamed for exposing her shoulders at a high school dance

Utah teen Gabi Finlayson idolizes Audrey Hepburn — the very portrait of grace and class. When she was in Paris, she bought a dress that reminded her of Hepburn's style. She chose the sweet, tea-length gown to wear to her school dance and even had it altered to make sure the bodice didn't expose too much skin.

Gabi didn't get to wear the special dress from Paris to the school dance. A school official stopped her and told her that her shoulders needed to be covered up. Her only option was to return to her car for a heavy winter coat.

It sounds like the plot of a teen movie. All her excitement and anticipation was shot down in an instant and replaced with shame and embarrassment.

Now, Gabi is speaking up. "Maybe instead of teaching girls they should cover themselves up, we should be teaching boys that we're not just sex objects that you can look at," says the remarkably well-spoken 15-year-old.

"The message that sends to girls is really troubling and damaging," says Gabi's mom, Kristy Kimball. She's absolutely right. Girls shouldn't be told their bodies are shameful. Exposed backs and shoulders aren't going to cause a high school sex riot.

These kinds of arbitrarily enforced dress codes also create tension among female students. Gabi pointed out that there were many other girls at the dance wearing shorter or more revealing dresses. It's awful that she had to look and compare. Every student attending should have been focused on the jitters and silly romance of a high school dance, not disgusting policing of girls' clothing for the sake of incredibly outdated notions of decency.

Woman covers her facial scars with tattoos with amazing results

If permanent makeup — like the eyebrows Hameed had tattooed on — could change her face, why couldn't tattoos change her scars? And just like that, Hameed changed her own life. She covered her scars and for the first time, was able to see her face as she'd always wanted to. Now she helps other women with facial scarring do the same thing.

See below:

Burn Victim

Burn Victim

Her technique uses skin tone pigments on scar tissue to camouflage the discoloration. And it works. She received all the training she needed and now has clinics in Chicago and Toronto where she changes the lives of many women.

It is hard to imagine going through life feeling so unhappy about one's face. There is really no easy way to deal with that. I have no equivalent in my own life and can only empathize and imagine what that must feel like. What Hameed gives these women is hope again. It's the ability to go outside their home and feel confident. Is there anything better?

Tattoos and cosmetic surgery both get a bad rap and sometimes it's for a good reason. But this is the best use of this treatment I have ever heard of. Beauty isn't everything, it's true. And we all need to learn to live with our flaws and embrace them. But scarring is different and anything that can help restore self-esteem to women who need it is amazing in my book.

Talk about using your own pain to spread joy in the world. Truly, this is a beautiful thing. And some of her work, she even does for free. What a story.

The Duggars forbid daughter Jill from helping her unwed, pregnant relative

And by love we mean controlling dominance and by conservatism we mean fundamentalist creepy Quiverfull crap.

This time, they have stuck to their Christian guns so hard that they denied one of their many children from helping a relative because she had gotten pregnant out of wedlock. The Jezebel!

So, here's the lowdown.

Jill Duggar, 23, is a practicing midwife (not really surprising with all the baby birthing going in a family whose beliefs include having as many children as your body will physically allow), and she reportedly wanted to assist her sister-in-law's younger sister with giving birth two years ago, but the sister was, gasp, unmarried!

The offender, Susanna Keller, is the 22-year-old sister of Anna Duggar, who is married to the oldest Duggar son, Josh.

More: 5 Reasons why Jill and Jessa Duggar hate each other

An unidentified source told Radar Online that the parents didn't think she should be "exposed to an unmarried mother in that condition." Because you know, that sin stuff's a-catchin'.

I'll give you a second to stop giggling before I continue.

The Duggars went one step further and banned, yes banned, the woman from their "hit" reality television show, 19 Kids and Counting, too.

More: Jessa Duggar attacked by pro-choice advocates on Instagram

Keller was once pretty tight with the Duggars, but Jim Bob felt her "slide into sin" meant they should forget she exists and strike her from all mention on the show. Whoa.

This is just another example of the ugly underbelly of the gigantic family's "wholesome" beliefs and the clean-cut family showing its true colors.

Emile Hirsch reportedly had a woman in a chokehold at Sundance

More: Emile Hirsch accused of assault at Sundance Film Festival

In the early hours of Sunday morning, police were called to Tao nightclub in Park City, Utah, where the actor had been partying during the Sundance Film Festival. At the time, the details of what happened between the film exec from Paramount Pictures and Hirsch were still pretty hazy, but now more details have emerged about what actually went down.

According to the New York Post's Page Six, the woman has been identified as Dani Bernfeld, and a source says Hirsch allegedly had her in a chokehold during the altercation. The publication also reports that sources told them the actor appeared to be inebriated at the nightclub and was picking on the woman.

"Emile was aggressively picking on Dani," said a source, adding, "He got even more aggressive and aggro [sic]. He pushed Dani up against a table, and then he put her in a headlock."

Another source said Hirsch allegedly put Bernfeld in a "chokehold" and that, "He attacked her from behind — he completely blindsided her after he'd been shit-talking and was already led away from her once."

The motivation for Hirsch's aggression is unclear although the sources' accounts of what allegedly happened do not paint the actor in a good light.

But the truth is that we underestimate our kids. Kids will normally eat what we feed them. Sure, your child may have a penchant for chicken nuggets like every other tot in America, but that doesn't mean she won't enjoy other, nontraditional foods that are packed full of flavor.

Break out of the chicken nugget prison you're living in, and try one of these delicious kid food alternatives for dinner:

1. Baked chicken fingers

Baked chicken fingers

If your kid has just gotta have it, then baked chicken fingers are a much healthier choice than fast-food nuggets. "Spice" things up by serving a spicy dipping sauce instead of ketchup on the side.

2. Breakfast pizza

I don’t regret scheduling my newborn down to the minute

$

It's not that I was against babysitting or outside caretakers. My husband and I actually relished the first time that his parents planned to babysit our new son for Valentine's Day when he was just 2 months old. When we dropped off our infant for a few hours, he came with an extensive and very detailed schedule:

6:30 a.m.: Wake up, change diaper, feed 4 to 6 ounces of breast milk

9 to 9:45 a.m.: Short nap in crib on his back with the lights out

10 a.m.: Feed 4 ounces of breast milk

11:30 a.m.: Feed 2 to 4 ounces of breast milk, put down for afternoon nap

2 p.m.: Wake up from nap

2 to 2:30 p.m.: Feed 4 ounces of breast milk

4 to 4:30 p.m.: Short nap in crib on his back with the lights out

5 to 5:30 p.m.: Feed 4 ounces of breast milk

6:30 p.m.: Feed 2 to 4 ounces of breast milk, start bath and bedtime routine

At the time, this type of moment-by-moment schedule seemed absolutely natural to me as an anxious parent. When I was in my third trimester, I came upon a parenting article that described two different methods of child rearing: Should we follow a schedule or just wing it?

I consider myself an outgoing and spontaneous person among friends, but because of my anxiety, my day-to-day life is pretty predictable. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would never be able to "wing it" when bringing a new human into the world. My husband is also a direction follower who viewed infancy as a complicated puzzle that we would work together to soon master.

That's when we bought the book. The New Contented Little Baby Book by a strict and experienced British nanny named Gina Ford became our parenting bible. The book covered every single detail of parenting that I always wanted to know but was too afraid to ask — like how to swaddle and when to start pumping breast milk to store up reserves.

The book also had a detailed, and I mean detailed, schedule for each stage in a baby's life, changing roughly every two weeks. My husband and I were committed to sleep training. We followed the schedules religiously. Ultimately, we got the results that we had hoped for: Both of our sons slept a solid 12 hours through the night at 6 months old.

Looking back on my neurosis, I'm torn. The critical devil on my shoulder reminds me how absurd I must have looked bringing around a printed schedule for my month-old baby everywhere I went. The kinder angel on my other shoulder reminds me: You were a new mom. Every new parent is nervous. Nobody gets it right the first time. You did what worked best for you.

Reddit Husband of the Year cooks wife 8-course dinner for her birthday

reddit 8 course dinner

reddit 8 course dinner

You've got to hand it to him. He used multiple cooking techniques, had beer and wine pairings, homemade bread and two (you heard me right — two!) kinds of cake. It probably took all day, and it probably cost some money. But it got him approximately nine gazillion good-husband points, to be used over his lifetime. That's right, lifetime. You cook me a meal like that, and you're allowed to exploit it whenever you want. "Hey honey, remember when I made you that eight-course meal seven years ago...? Can I buy a sports car?" "Of course, dear! Whatever you want. [swoon]"

Redditors came out en masse to comment on this glorious undertaking. They ranged from jealous to impressed to annoyed.

There were those keeping the wife's best interests in mind:

"Happy Birthday, I made you this nice meal, now hold on while I take photos for the internet peoples." Pics, or it didn't happen.

"I want to see the pile of dishes she had to wash after." To be fair, if dude cooks this kind of meal, he can probably manage the dishes too.

There were those lamenting their own substandard meals:

"Well, my husband made macaroni and cheese soup. ...He added everything to the boiling water." Is mac and cheese soup a fancy name for undrained mac and cheese?

"I microwaved corn and added celery salt to it. the celery salt makes it ~fancy~" Indeed.

"Brb microwaving a hot pocket." Mmm... hot pocket.

There were those who could only the see dolla dolla bills:

"Anytime I see a food with 'reduction' in it, I don't know what it is but I know it's fancy." Reduction = tasty sauce.

"What I'm seeing is I'm rich, I'm rich, I'm rich, also maybe French." That's logical.

There were some nitpickers:

"Bro, the napkin should be under the knife next time..." Jeez, give a guy a break.

"Shouldn't the knives blades be facing inward towards the plates?" There were knives?

And there were the hopeful:

"Willing to sign up for sister wife role." Will work for food?

"Congrats on the sex I hope!" Probably.

"When I make my girlfriend multi-course meals she just watches Netflix and falls asleep. Hope your wife's response was better!" Well, you get full, you know?

So, what do you think? Husband of the Year, or show off?

Ludacris wins bitter custody battle despite shocking allegations

$

In a bitter custody battle between Ludacris, whose real name is Chris Bridges, and his baby mama, Tamika Fuller, a judge has finally awarded the rapper-actor full physical custody of the 13-month-old baby girl.

Things have been a little crazy in this custody fight. Fuller had been back and forth to court several times to ask for an ever increasing (and crazy) amount of child support, once topping out at $35,000. Ludacris has taken several personal and financial hits during this drawn-out battle. Several times, the judge ordered him to pay more child support, from $7,000 to $15,000, and the rapper was forced to pay Fuller's court fees one time, as well.

In addition to that, Fuller accused the 2 Fast 2 Furious actor of trying to pay her off to have an abortion and that he was always against the pregnancy, saying he "offered her $10,000 and a house if she lost the baby."

Ludacris has always said these were hurtful lies she was using to publicly humiliate him and damage his reputation. He even filed a motion (which was denied) to have the court seal the proceedings as he believed the media was taking them and reporting them out of context to make him look even worse.

More: Feed a hungry kid by falling asleep to the voice of Jeff Bridges

During the proceedings, the rapper has been fighting the uphill battle of convincing the court he hasn't been making any money since the tragic and unexpected death of fellow actor and friend Paul Walker, which derailed the production of Fast and Furious 7, and that he couldn't afford to pay the exorbitant amounts of child support.

Fuller made further nasty allegations against her baby daddy, saying he married his longtime girlfriend just to make a better case in court.

More: Ludacris ditches daughter with Delta Airlines

You'll likely remember the amazing proposal and then fast (like same-day-as-the-proposal fast) marriage of Ludacris to his amazingly beautiful girlfriend Eudoxie Mbouguiengue just about a month ago.

Ludacris proposal

Ludacris proposal

More: Paul Walker's legacy lives on one year after his death

Well, in an official statement he released to People magazine, Ludacris said, "After review of all the evidence, the testimony of the witnesses, the report of the guardian ad litem, and the claims made throughout this entire case, I am gratified that the judge found me to be the most fit and proper parent to have primary physical custody of our beautiful daughter."

The rapper also has a 13-year-old daughter, Karma Bridges, from a previous relationship.

Most people had been counting Ludacris out throughout the proceedings, saying they didn't see how the judge would provide him full custody. I don't know if that is because they believed in the allegations or if it is because traditionally it is the mothers who win custody battles.

But it certainly is encouraging to see men like Ludacris stepping up and wanting to be fully responsible for their child(ren) and that the courts are recognizing when that is in the best interest of the child, not just taking the side of the mother, which is often believed to be the case.

Congratulations to Ludacris.

People over 70 are having loads of good sex — yay!

The study, from The University of Manchester and NatCen Social Research, questioned 7,000 people in their 70's and 80's. About 54 percent of the men and 31 percent of the women said they were still sexually active. Not terrible, right? And, of those, one-third said they had frequent sex, at least twice a month.

A part of me jumped for joy at this notion. It's great, right? And anything that increases awareness that older people are vibrant and vital is a positive step in the right direction.

On the other hand, those numbers seem low. I know, I know. It's great that they are getting busy at all and we'd all like to think we are in that one-third of women who are still happy and healthy and getting it on, but that means two-thirds of us won't be. That means a woman who is forty right now, if she falls into that majority, will no longer be sexually active in just thirty short years? Ouch.

Something about this just breaks my heart.

And of course, there is the extra downside that the CDC reports sexually transmitted diseases are up among baby boomers to a nearly alarming degree. Yikes.

Still, it's important to focus on the good here. And there is a lot. If sex isn't all you hope for in your 20's and 30's, isn't it comforting to know you have another 60 or 70 years to keep practicing? And if it IS good, well then you are in luck, too. It's just going to keep getting better and it's not going to stop. Pretty nice, right?

Maybe it's time we stopped looking at old people as gross or quiet or weird or not important. We will all get there someday and it's nice to know things may still be exciting.

There's a new, more terrifying human Ken doll...

$

We now live in an age that has embraced the "normal-sized" Barbie doll, and yet there are still too many of these original Barbie wannabes out there. Not surprisingly, it's usually women who undergo countless expensive surgeries to achieve this truly unhealthy body type. And while this may be because Barbie was the more well-known of the Barbie/Ken pair, it more likely has to do with how obsessed today's society is with women's bodies. However, guys like Alves prove that men are also significantly affected by these impossible body standards, and will go to absurd lengths to achieve them.

Ken doll - 3

Ken doll - 3

So far, Alves has undergone liposuction, multiple nose jobs, six-pack implants, calf implants and Botox fillers. He spent almost $23,000 on a strange stem cell procedure that involves injecting your own fat and blood back into your skin to rejuvenate it. For his latest, and most dangerous, procedure, Alves flew to Colombia for a six-in-one super surgery which cost him around $75,900. This included a nose job, ear pinning (whatever that is) and a particularly grotesque operation designed to give him a wider smile. I guess for some, beauty really is pain.

ken doll with doll

Despite all of the comments and criticisms Alves has received over his bizarre and expensive beauty endeavors, he is determined to keep going. "It is long-term maintenance. Once you start, it is difficult to stop. Naturally I'm a perfectionist. It's like a snowball effect and I'm not going to stop." This sadly is a common notion among the Barbie and Ken wannabes, and really all the plastic surgery obsessed. Like any addiction, trying to achieve body "perfection" is all-consuming, but it's frankly impossible with our culture's ever-changing beauty standards. Eventually, time catches up, and if you don't like who you are on the inside by then, no amount of surgery will change that.

Comcast changes customer's billing name, and it's awful

$

But the story doesn't stop there. When Ricardo's wife, Lisa, called the company to get the profane name change rectified, rather than receiving sympathy, she met with resistance from the service department. So she did what any smart woman would in this age where the media speaks louder than any one personal complaint: She called a reporter. That reporter was Christopher Elliott, who writes on travel and consumer affairs for The Washington Post, USA Today and other publications. Naturally Elliott was appalled by the story.

"You know employees talk about customers behind their back and say things like this," Elliott told CBS News. "But I've never seen anyone put something like this in writing. This falls into the category of 'What were they thinking?'"

According to Mr. Brown, he originally called Comcast to cancel the family's cable service and was told he'd have to pay a $60 fee to do so. He was then redirected to the sales department, where a representative tried to persuade him to keep the service and even go on a two-year contract. This call resulted in the infamous name change on the family's statement. "I was never rude," states Brown. "It could have been that person was upset because I didn't take the offer."

During his work on the story, Elliott received this statement from Steve Kipp, Comcast's VP of communications for the Washington region: "We have spoken with our customer and apologized for this completely unacceptable and inappropriate name change," he said. "We have zero tolerance for this type of disrespectful behavior and are conducting a thorough investigation to determine what happened. We are working with our customer to make this right and will take appropriate steps to prevent this from happening again."

Comcast is the largest cable service provider in the country but certainly not the only one to be lacking in the customer service department. However, it is the first to take customer disrespect to such an immature level. Well done, Comcast. You're officially the playground bully of the cable service world.

Circumcision: The part of home birth no one talks about

$
0
0

The home birth for my second son went off without a hitch. While I moved around quite a bit in the pushing stage of labor, my second son was ultimately born on a birthing stool in my bedroom. The precise location of his birth was almost an afterthought. I was the most comfortable at home, I was a low-risk pregnancy following my first son's birth at a birthing center, I was paying out-of-pocket and I had a good relationship with my midwife.

Our trusted midwife offered all of the services that you would find following a hospital birth including a newborn screening, antibiotic ointment for the baby's eyes and a vitamin K shot. What she did not offer, and what we were certainly in need of, was a doctor who would perform a circumcision following a home birth.

As a word of warning, don't even attempt to Google the word "mohel" without learning how to spell it first. That's a good 15 minutes of your life you'll never get back. As another word of warning, don't expect a traveling rabbi skilled in circumcision to be available anywhere in South Texas.

There is no mobile circumcision doc on speed dial if you forgo a hospital birth. Short of ordering a DIY kit on the internet (I kid, I kid), circumcision options are slim. As a home birther, and even a birthing center birther, your choice boils down to scouring your local area for a well-reviewed pediatrician who will perform an in-office infant circumcision.

One home birthing forum mom recalls her experience, "I had my son circumcised. We waited till he was 3 weeks old and had it done by a pediatric urologist at his office. It was quick and painless and done well."

For me, this involved calling dozens of local doctors, only to be shot down. After locating one of the only local pediatricians who performed in-office infant circumcision in an elite area of town, we learned that the "elective" procedure wasn't covered by insurance. We once again had to pay out-of-pocket.

After all of my time writing on circumcision, I now know what the typical response to this dilemma will be: Why would you go out of your way and pay extra money to mutilate your baby for no good reason?

Circumcision and home birth are tough topics that always bring out the angry mob with pitchforks. In fact, most "crunchy" home birth moms are afraid to ask this question precisely for that reason: judgment from other natural moms who may not agree with their choice.

But for many moms, there will come a time when both of these choices intersect. Parents who birth at home may feel like the circumcision decision has been taken away — when the truth is, it just requires a little more legwork to get the procedure done.

Justin Bieber's candid FB video shows a caring, gentle side of him (VIDEO)

There has been a lot for you to mull over about the Biebs in the past few months and the past few days, in particular.

Bieber took to Facebook to post an apology for his bad behavior on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and try to air out some things that have been weighing on his mind about his bad boy behavior during the past year and a half.

He has been getting into all kinds of trouble, being what most of us would consider a spoiled brat: racing expensive cars, peeing in public, the whole abandoning pets everywhere thing....

But he addresses his fans and the public in this candid and touching video.

In it, he first apologizes for his actions on Ellen, saying, "I didn't want to come off arrogant or conceited, or basically how I've been acting the past year, year and a half."

Then he lays it all out there: "I'm not who I was pretending to be."

He admits he has a lot of the same insecurities as the rest of us, wanting people to like him and acting the way he thinks people want him to act. Basically, trying to be "cool."

He says, "[O]ften we pretend to be something we're not as a cover-up of what we're truly feeling inside." He continues, "And there was a lot of feelings going on in there. Just being young and growing up in this business is hard. Just growing up in general is hard."

Honestly, I don't know how well most people would act or handle wildly successful careers, unlimited amounts of money and basically no rules at a young age. Think about the way most of us acted in college when we got our first taste of freedom, and we didn't have access to Lamborghinis — otherwise we might have ended up in the same boat as the Biebs.

Basically, I think we should cut him some slack. He might be realizing he's been kind of acting like an ass. Maybe this is the first step to him growing up a little bit.

Further proof that we think he might actually be turning over a new leaf? His latest Instagram posts.

We know you have been freaking out now trying to figure out if Justin is singing about his ex, Selena Gomez, and we are, too, people. We are, too.

Justin whets his followers' appetites with two clips on his Instagram page of a slow, guitar-plucking ballad. He sings, "How do our lives become lighter? How do our eyes become brighter? Gotta believe in something higher."

Well, it was the second clip that really is the kicker. He says, "When it's raining, it's pouring. How do I always end up the enemy? How do I wake up in the morning without you right next to me? How did we throw it all away?"

Then it cuts off!

Sure sounds like a regretful ballad about a lost love, now doesn't it?!

The tease.

This comes on the heels of Gomez releasing her hit, "The Heart Wants What It Wants," which is reportedly about her difficult time getting over the Biebs.

But the two have been out and about over the past few months and sporting various beaus and babes on their arms. Gomez has been rumored to be dating Zedd, and Bieber has been running around the country with Hailey Baldwin and Kylie and Kendall Jenner.

Hopefully, he will release a complete version sooner rather than later so we can pick apart every line and see what he means. And, hopefully, he is on the path to no more juvenile drama.
