Coolest high school teacher ever dances his booty off in 'Uptown Funk' (VIDEO)

This group of Dallas, Texas, high school students and their creative teacher, from A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School, got together and performed a fully choreographed cover of Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk."

The caption on the YouTube video says, "None of this would have happened if it wasn't for the hard work and dedication of the Director/Theater Arts Teacher Scot Pankey, with the help of Camera crew — Bryan Urraca, Albert Robledo & Johan Cruz & Edited and produced by Jonathan Vega AKA #TrippyJ."
To make it even more awesome, that camera crew is all students!
I dare you to not dance along with these awesome kids and one really great teacher.

4 Easy meals using leftover chicken with veggies

0
0

A great way to change up chicken leftovers is by using different veggies. Sometimes I just use veggies that are leftovers too, and other times I buy veggies just for making different leftover chicken dishes. I guess you can say chicken leftovers get the royal treatment in my house.

1 chicken wonton soup

I usually buy the veggies for leftover chicken wonton soup because I generally don't have them on hand. I especially like baby bok choy, bean sprouts and fresh mushrooms in wonton soup.

2 wonton soup

Leftover chicken wonton soup recipe

This quick and easy wonton soup is made with leftover chicken, mushrooms, baby bok choy, onion and bean sprouts.

Serves 2

Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 25 minutes | Total time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup cooked chicken, shredded
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (for the soup)
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
  • 2 baby bok choy
  • 1/2 cup bean sprouts
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/3 cup cooked chicken, minced (for the wontons)
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (for the wontons)
  • 8 (3-1/2 inch) wonton wrappers (for the wontons)

Directions:

  1. To a medium-size pan, add the chicken broth, and heat on medium heat.
  2. Add the chicken, garlic, mushrooms and sesame oil to the pan.
  3. Let boil until the mushrooms start to get soft. Add the onion.
  4. Slice each baby bok choy in half lengthwise, and add it to the pan.
  5. Let simmer while making the wontons.
  6. In a small bowl, add the garlic to the minced chicken.
  7. In the middle of each wonton wrapper, add a small amount of the chicken and garlic mixture.
  8. Lightly wet the inside edges of the wonton with water.
  9. Pull all ends of the wonton up, gently twist, and pinch the ends together into a small "sack."
  10. Carefully add the wontons to the hot broth, and let cook for about 2 minutes.
  11. Add the bean sprouts, and serve.

2 chicken pot pie

I like to use leftover veggies when making a chicken pot pie. This personal-pan version comes topped with flaky biscuits. But I confess, they are the store-bought kind, which cuts the time down a bit to make this.

Leftover chicken pot pie recipe

An easy dinner made with leftover chicken and veggies. This single-serving pot pie is topped with flaky premade biscuits that require a quick bake in the oven.

Serves 2

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 25 minutes | Total time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrots
  • 2 tablespoons chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons chopped celery
  • 2 dashes garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 dashes salt (or salt to taste)
  • 1/4 cup peas
  • 1 cup cooked chicken, cubed
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon water
  • 6 small, uncooked, premade biscuits

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (or whatever temperature required for the biscuits you're using).
  2. To a medium-size pot, add the chicken broth. Heat the pot on medium heat.
  3. Add the carrots, onion, celery, garlic powder, thyme, pepper and salt. Let boil for about 10 minutes.
  4. Add the peas and chicken.
  5. To a separate small bowl, add the cornstarch and water. Stir until a paste forms.
  6. Stir the cornstarch mixture into the broth. Continue to stir, and simmer until the broth starts to thicken.
  7. Once the chicken mixture thickens, add it to single-serving-size, ovenproof pans or dishes.
  8. Top with the biscuits.
  9. Bake until the biscuits turn a golden color (about 10 minutes).
  10. Serve while hot.

3 chicken tortilla soup

Leftover veggies like corn go great in chicken tortilla soup. I like to use fresh tomatoes and lime too. Lime juice is my favorite part of tortilla soup. Or maybe the avocado is my favorite part. Either way, leftover chicken is just perfect for tortilla soup.

3 tortilla soup

Leftover chicken tortilla soup recipe

  • 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded
  • 1/2 cup corn
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mexican oregano
  • 2 dashes ground cumin
  • 5 dashes ground black pepper
  • 5 dashes salt (or salt to taste)
  • 2 corn tortillas chopped in small pieces

  2. Add the onion, and stir.
  3. Add the garlic, and stir.
  4. Add the chicken broth, tomatoes, jalapeño, chicken, corn, oregano, cumin, pepper, salt and tortillas.
  5. Let simmer for about 20 minutes, and stir as it cooks.
  6. Carefully taste the soup to see if it needs more salt.
  7. Serve hot. Top with lime juice and avocado. Garnish with cilantro.

4 buffalo sauce chicken and veggies

Spicy, hot veggies with Buffalo sauce and leftover chicken is a great rice topper for dinner. A one-dish meal that's hearty and filled with veggies is a good thing.

Leftover chicken with stir-fried veggies, Buffalo sauce and brown rice recipe

This one-dish meal is a quick veggie stir-fry made with Buffalo sauce and leftover chicken and then served over rice. It's hearty, spicy and can be made in just 30 minutes.

  4. After they start to turn golden around the edges (about 5 minutes), add the mushrooms, and stir.
  5. Add the zucchini, yellow squash, green onions, garlic, salt, pepper and thyme. Stir as it cooks.
  6. When the squash starts to soften (about 4 minutes), add the chicken.

8 Trendy garden ideas for the hipster gardener

1. Millennials get gardening

gen y gardening

No, you will not have to add 18- to 35-year-olds to your landscape, but they will be the largest age group digging in the dirt this year! Gardening is not just a hobby for your grandmother anymore. As these generation Y-ers start to settle down and purchase homes, they are more likely to tackle DIY projects and spend time outdoors.

2. Sustainable living

sustainability

People are no longer gardening just to pretty up their landscape. They are gardening to enrich communities, the environment and their own well-being. Low-maintenance plants that are drought-tolerant and disease-resistant will be popular this year.

4. Pops of color

color gardening

Subtle colors are out and bright and bold colors are in! Plants with unusual patterns and strong colors will be popular choices in the landscape. Don’t be bashful — go ahead and plant a mix of hot pink and teal by your mailbox.

5. Outdoor "garden rooms" for entertainment

With all the time and energy spent to pretty up your outdoor space, you’ll want to show it off. Gone are the days of regular patio sets. Instead of bringing the outdoors in, bring the indoors out. Full dining tables, sofas and even televisions can be incorporated into your temporary entertaining space if you lack the room indoors. This year your "garden room" will be the most popular spot to entertain.

6. Portable gardens for small spaces

potable gardens

You don’t have to own a home to have a garden. Many dwarf varieties of traditional plants are readily available now and are perfect for container gardening. Apartment dwellers can enjoy gardening on their patios or in a well-lit room.

7. Urban farming

Looks like city dwellers want to be homesteaders too — just not in the middle of the country. Empty city lots are being converted to community gardens and residents living in major metropolitan areas are raising chickens and bees. You don’t need a bunch of acreage to have a farm.

8. Native plants

The popularity of native plants will be on the rise this year. These types of plants are indigenous, occur naturally or existed for many years in an area. These plants make awesome additions to your landscape because they are very low maintenance and have stood the test of time.

Fake dog prank tricks mom every time and it's so good (VIDEO)

Scaring my mom with a fake dog

Scaring my mom with a fake dog

I have to admit I was at first skeptical about whether the "Scaring My Mom with a Fake Dog" video would really make me LOL-cry, as so many YouTube videos are wont to do. But boy, did I underestimate the hilarity of a simple bait-and-switch gag that could provide endless hours of entertainment.

The basic gist of the prank is this: According to YouTuber Jomboy Videos, he bought his little brother a fake dog for his birthday. Their mother was not a fan, possibly because this fake dog is much, much too realistic. According to the video description, the strategically placed fake dog was used to scare their mom a minimum of five times in three minutes. The video captures 50 seconds of this fun.

Mom is first scared by the angry, German shepherd-looking fake dog as she comes in the door with groceries. She screams, realizes her mistake and yells at her sons. Rinse and repeat.

Mom is scared again just one minute later when she comes out of her room and sees the very lifelike fake dog that has been placed in the hallway. She screams and yells at her sons once she realizes she's been had again. Even though Mom keeps getting scared over and over as the fake dog changes location, she's humble enough to laugh about how ridiculous she looks.

If there's one thing I take away from this video, it is that fake dogs are scary, y'all. As a mother, I would be righteously pissed if my sons used their valuable time to prank me with a pretty scary-looking stuffed animal.

The fact that this mom just can't get her act together and keeps getting scared by the same fake dog is comedy gold. This YouTube video has over half a million hits and counting, on its way to viral status simply because of one mother's priceless reaction.

If five hilarious fake-outs were recorded in just a few minutes, it's safe to say this mom can expect a rough road ahead over the next few months. I give her all the points for being a good sport.

12 Ideas for raising a socially conscious kid

0
0

I get what she's saying. My own daughter is so immersed in Curious George and her demand for snacks and playtime that it would never occur to her that most children in the world lead lives vastly different from her own. But the idea of taking on one more "learning experience" to teach my kid about social responsibility sounds daunting. Also? Not particularly fun. Plus, I don't have the time or energy to serve soup at a homeless shelter every Friday night from now until my kid turns 18. Because that's what it would take, right?

Child development expert Denise Daniels, however, disagrees with my assumption about the parental exhaustion required to teach social awareness to our kids. "Teachable moments are built into our everyday lives," she explains. "They may take a little extra thought, but they certainly don't have to take much extra time or effort."

Daniels suggests the following everyday activities to teach social awareness and empathy to our children.

1. Participate in a coat drive. Pack up a coat that's grown too small and take it to a local charity, with your kid in tow.

2. Recycle at home. Recycling is so easy to do, but it teaches your kid that people are stewards of the earth and its resources.

3. Prepare a meal together for someone in need. Did you best friend just have a surgery? Whip together a casserole with your child, and deliver it for a personal touch.

4. Teach through exposure. Talk to your kid about what he's thinking when you see a panhandler on the street, or drive through a community that's different from your own.

5. Give one compliment a day. Teach your child the power of positive words by handing out compliments freely — to your family and complete strangers.

6. Share a positive story from the news. It's not all doom and gloom. Good things are happening out there, often as a result of socially responsible people.

7. Ask for birthday party donations. Encourage your kid to accept charitable donations at his birthday party, instead of gifts.

8. Donate a book. Many libraries accept donations of old books for kids in need.

9. Write to a pen pal. Expand your child's horizons by linking him or her with a pen pal from another country.

10. Turn off the lights. Conservation is key to a socially responsible life.

11. Travel to learn. Cruises are great, but traveling to learn about the world is instrumental in the development of a well-rounded person.

12. Tell a story. Pick out a few books for bedtime that tell stories about people who do great things for others.

See? Not so bad. "Remember that our society benefits from children who grow into socially responsible adults," Daniels concludes. "By instilling simple, everyday values in our children, we're teaching them to leave the world a better place." No soup kitchen required, unless it resonates with you or your kid.

HBO renews Togetherness and we could not be more excited about it

More: 16 Things viewers had to say about Empire's premiere in tweets

If you haven't been watching Togetherness, then you should be reevaluating your life and making room for this show in it. If you have been watching Togetherness, then you should be hugging everyone you know in celebration of the fact that HBO has just announced it is renewing the half-hour comedy for a much-deserved second season, which will begin production in Los Angeles soon and will make its way to our screens in 2016.

The show, which was created by Steve Zissis and the Duplass brothers — Mark and Jay — has aired only three episodes of its debut season so far, but we are already enamored with it. It seems Mark and Jay Duplass also have some amorous feelings to share.

"We began our love affair with HBO in our parents' living room in 1983, and to have these brilliant creative people put a ring on our fingers with a second season of Togetherness is a real-life dream come true," they shared upon HBO's announcement.

It's safe to say news of the show's renewal is also our real-life dream come true. We've said it before and we'll say it again: There is so much to love about this new show. Its exploration of the marriage between Brett (Mark Duplass) and Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) — who really love each other, but have lost their spark — is a subtle one and unlike anything we've seen on the same subject on television so far. Throw in Michelle's sister, Tina (Amanda Peet), and Brett's best friend, Alex (Zissis), and you have TV's most wonderfully entertaining foursome living under one roof.

Aside from rooting for Brett and Michelle to get back on the same track, we are also desperate for Tina and Alex to get together. Their scenes deliver much of the show's comedy and we are immediately filled with joy whenever they share screen time. And now that we know a second season is a go, it's entirely plausible we will get our wish.

More: SPOILERS — will our favorite Togetherness pair get together?

And while this show definitely delivers the laughs, it also delivers a major dose of heart and charm, making it a lovely and heartwarming addition to our TV viewing schedule. We can't wait to see what else is in store for the rest of Season 1 and when Season 2 hits our screens next year.

Moms are using acupuncture during labor, and it works

0
0

I'm not really one to buy into all kinds of alternative medicines, but I'll be honest with you — after working as a nurse, I've learned not to say no to anything. There are all kinds of things about the human body that we know nothing about, especially when it comes to women's bodies and the mystery of pregnancy and childbirth.

So when I first heard about using acupuncture during labor, I kept an open mind. Sure, my initial thought was, how on earth could anyone stay still enough for someone to stick needles in them during labor, but then again, everyone handles labor completely differently. How acupuncture works isn't completely understood, but it's thought to vary from "unblocking" the body's energy flow to simply boosting natural painkillers and blood flow in the body.

During labor, acupuncture can be used for pain relief, as a calming technique (which again will lessen pain) and to keep labor contractions going during a stalled labor. Some acupuncture practices support the procedure not only as a way to keep women relaxed, but also to shorten labor.

A 2004 review of the literature involving acupuncture as a pain relief method during labor concluded that the evidence was "promising," but that future research is still needed. Like all studies, it can be hard to tell if the study participants experienced pain relief as a result of expecting to get relief or from the acupuncture itself. A newer review in 2009 also found that, "acupuncture during labor and delivery is well tolerated by patients and medical staff. It should be further evaluated for its promise in potentially reducing the incidence of cesarean section."

You can even use acupuncture on yourself during labor, according to some proponents. "I used acupressure to start my labor, restart my stalling labor in the hospital and as pain relief for my natural childbirth," said licensed acupuncturist Ali Damron. She recommends a pressure point in the foot as "useful during the transition phase of labor" to help pull energy downwards in the body. "During each contraction I asked my husband to pinch the pressure point on my right hand, and it really helped distract me from the pain and concentrate on relaxing," wrote one mother who used acupuncture during her pregnancy and in early labor.

It's definitely not mainstream, but some U.S. hospitals now offer acupuncture for women during labor and it has shown promise for pain relief after C-sections and postpartum as well. If you think that you may want to try acupuncture during your labor, you will most likely need to prep a plan far in advance and either find a licensed acupuncturist to bring with you during labor or choose a facility that offers the service for laboring women.

7 Details on Adam Sandler's new Netflix movie, Ridiculous 6

0
0

More: Netflix adds 33 shows and movies in January, cuts 60 favorites

The flick, titled Ridiculous 6, sounds very, very ridiculous, but also like it has the potential to be ridiculously funny. And if Netflix's prior forays into original content are any indication (House of Cards? Orange Is the New Black?), the streaming service's stab at movie-making is going to go just swimmingly. A whole bunch of new details were announced today about the first upcoming film, Ridiculous 6. Here's what we know so far.

More: Adam Sandler, you're an overpaid actor!

1. Adam Sandler is producing the movie (and three others)

Ridiculous 6 is the first of four movies produced by Adam Sandler and his production company, Happy Madison, under a deal with Netflix.

2. It's a "Western spoof"

Blazing Saddles reboot, anyone?

3. The cast is the most ridiculous thing announced so far

The Wrap reported Tuesday that Ridiculous 6 will star Sandler alongside Taylor Lautner, three-time Oscar nominee Nick Nolte, country singer Blake Shelton and comedian Whitney Cummings, all alongside the regular cast of Happy Madison actors that includes Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Dan Aykroyd, Will Forte, Jon Lovitz and Vanilla Ice. Also rumored to be on board? Luke Wilson, Steve Zahn, Danny Trejo, Chris Parnell and Lavell Crawford. It's a surprising mix of names, to say the least.

4. Ridiculous 6 was passed up by Sony and Paramount

Both major studios said "no, thanks" to the Adam Sandler film before Netflix snatched it up.

5. Production begins in February…

… but there's still no word on when Ridiculous 6 will hit Netflix.

6. This will be Shelton's acting debut

Shelton's never acted before, but he's no stranger to being in front of a camera — he's been a judge on The Voice since the show debuted.

7. The plot features some famous names, too

According to The Wrap, insiders described the plot: Sandler will play an orphan raised by a Native American tribe and Lautner, Schneider, Wilson and Terry Crews will play his half-brothers. Nolte is Sandler's long-lost father, Forte and Trejo are leaders of rival gangs, Shelton will play Wyatt Earp and Vanilla Ice will play Mark Twain.

Nick Jonas is sick of 'looking at himself' grabbing his crotch

More: Nick Jonas has agreed to get hazed by frat boys

The now-22-year-old former Jonas Brother did an in-depth interview with Rolling Stone and dished on all the things that have changed since his purity-ring-rocking boy band days. From partying with Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Jay Z, to dating Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, it's probably safe to say Nick is officially all grown up.

"It was a lot of fun," he said of his Jonas Brothers days. "I got to perform at the White House five or six times, and I went to spring training with the Dodgers, which was a highlight of my entire life. But there are also things that are embarrassing, like looking back at your middle-school yearbook. Especially the emphasis on our relationships. That can mess with your head. We had a pretty huge female fan base, so we had to make a concerted effort to keep things private and say we didn't have girlfriends. I feel bad about it now. I probably hurt some people."

More: Nick Jonas surprises fans with a performance in NYC subway station

And then there's how Nick relaxes nowadays. Unlike his older brother, Joe, he never smoked weed with his fellow Disney stars, like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. But that doesn't mean he passes on pot.

"I smoked weed elsewhere," he said, laughing. "But I was actually way more guarded back then. I wasn't partying too hard at 15, which is probably for the best. I've loosened up quite a bit since then. My Disney years feel like a long, long time ago."

And now that Nick is known for his infamous crotch-grab photo shoot, he spoke out about that, too, and how he didn't know at the time what a big deal it would turn out to be — and the fact that's he's totally over it.

"I had no idea," he said. "It just kind of happened, and now I have a lot of unexpected new fans. It was pretty interesting to watch it all unfold and travel in the way it did. It's resurfacing at the moment, as another male artist [Justin Bieber] has done a photo shoot similar to it. It's one of those things where I'm getting sick of looking at myself like that."

Martha Stewart gets TMI about her toilet time with Meredith Vieira (VIDEO)

More: Martha Stewart is so tech-savvy she uses a drone in her garden

The reigning queen of recipes, decorating and all things lifestyle just did a hilarious interview with Meredith Vieira and gave us even more priceless insight into how we should be living our lives — in the bathroom.

Vieira, of course, is curious about potty etiquette (because who wouldn't be in that situation?), and while we may still not know whether Stewart sits or squats, we definitely know more about her bathroom habits now than we did before.

"Do you wipe off the commode before you use it?" is the first question Vieira asks.

"If I have to, I just use what I have in my bag," Stewart replies as she reveals that she's always ready for such a situation. "Of course, I come prepared. Martha Stewart Cleaner: It's the best bathroom cleaner… here are a couple of rags, which I always carry in my bag."

More: Martha Stewart’s Reddit AMA — "What's a dildo?"

And even on the potty, Stewart is always prepared — she's armed with answers and products as Vieira asks about pet care, recipes and good reading material for a long stay in the lav.

She slides a doggy bed stuffed with toys and other pet products, an entire crepe cake and one of her books under the stall door at Vieira's requests, and when the talk show host asks Stewart if she has "a square to spare," the domestic queen is armed and ready for that, too.

"I always carry a lot of these in my purse," Stewart says as she hands over a toilet paper square artfully folded into an origami swan.

It just proves there is nothing Martha doesn't think of.

No one but Kris Jenner could rock these sheer (yes, sheer!) pants (PHOTO)

When you step out wearing Chanel's latest designs and you run into the great Karl Lagerfeld himself, when he wants to look at your clutch, you let him look at your clutch.

Minor detail: You're using said clutch to preserve your modesty (which is laughable to even think about let alone type about any of the Kardashian/Jenner troop).

Well, if you're Kris Jenner, this is your reality.

The reality TV momager of the Kardashian clan was attending Chanel's fashion show in Paris on Tuesday. Jenner was wearing mesh pants (read: basically no pants at all) and was using a lovely leather Chanel clutch, so the entire world wasn't staring at her goods.

Now, she kind of rocked the whole see-through pants look (although we wish she had taken another tip from the runway trend and wore a skirt over them), but in every photo, you just can't stop staring at the unmoving clutch in front of her crotch!

Then, insert Lagerfeld into the picture. He swipes the clutch for a closer look… to Jenner's dismay (we think).

You can catch a glimpse of the infamous clutch in the bottom of this tweet:

One-Pot Wonder: A hearty skillet packed with Creole flavor

2 shrimp and andouille sausage rice bowl

This dish looks so pretty when the shrimp tails are left on, which also gives it a bit of a finger food flair.

3 shrimp and andouille sausage rice bowl

The big decision is whether you want to eat it with a fork or a spoon. I took the spoon route, but of course, either way it tastes wonderful. It's filled with so much flavor that with each bite, you can practically hear the New Orleans jazz and brass bands playing.

4 Shrimp and andouille sausage rice bowl

Skillet shrimp and andouille sausage rice bowl recipe

This hearty one-skillet Creole dish is made with andouille sausage, shrimp and rice, giving it New Orleans flavor with every bite.

Serves 2

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 20 minutes | Total time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 andouille pork sausage, removed from the casing
  • 12 fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper

  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 dash smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 dashes salt (or salt to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon warm water
  • 2 cups cooked white rice

Directions:

  1. Heat a large skillet on medium heat, and add the olive oil, red bell pepper, green bell pepper and onion. Stir together.
  2. Add the andouille sausage, and stir. Continue to stir until the sausage starts to brown (about 5 minutes).
  3. Add the broth, paprika, thyme, garlic powder, oregano, pepper and salt. Continue to stir until the sausage is thoroughly cooked.
  4. Add the shrimp, and stir as it cooks (about 4 minutes).
  5. To a small bowl, add the flour and water. Stir to form a paste.
  6. Slowly pour the flour mixture into the large pan while constantly stirring.
  7. When the liquid starts to thicken, remove the pan from the heat, and serve in a shallow bowl over white rice.

Turn the 'Big Game' into a family-friendly affair

0
0

Or maybe I'm just projecting my feelings onto toddlers. Look, I love football, but the whole ordeal of the "Big Game" is fairly exhausting. Four hours of commercials that aren't really all that funny. Thirty minutes of a halftime show with bad acoustics. Four hours of pretending like I care, when the Dallas Cowboys didn't make it past the second round of playoffs. (We were robbed.)

Anyway, I'm planning on using February's "Television Holiday" to play some games and eat some snacks with my kid. She's onto something when she starts flailing around on the ground during the second quarter, so here are a few ideas for each quarter of American gluttony and preseveration.

First Quarter: Get your app on

This activity has the promise of a craft-snack hybrid, which we all know is the best kind of craft. You'll just need paper, yarn and glue to make these cute football bowls with your little one. Fill them up with a favorite snack for extra enjoyment.

Second Quarter: Mix it up with a printable

Rain or shine, you can't go wrong with young kids and coloring pages. YesColoring has many football printables, including helmets for every NFL team your child might fancy. Print off a few pages and provide a few crayons so your kids can make it through the doldrums of the second quarter.

Halftime show: Step outside and play catch

toss game

Image: A Few Good Pieces

Of course, a normal game of catch can work just fine. But when it comes to raising small kids, why do something easy, when you can do something so difficult? Just kidding. A football toss game, like this one from A Few Good Pieces, is more engaging for little ones than a normal game of toss. Plus, you can use the game for years to come.

Third Quarter: Give bingo a whirl

bingo

Bingo — like a coloring page — is a small child's dream come true. Print off a few football bingo cards for all of your guests, in order to keep the party atmosphere churning and little hands busy. (Etsy, $10)

Fourth Quarter: An ice cream sandwich chaser

ice cream footballs

Image: The Celebration Shoppe

Finish off the night with a delicious dessert that's easy enough for a child to assemble. You'll just need ice cream sandwiches, white icing and wooden spoons to pull off this recipe like the champions you are.

7 Life hacks for a more productive week

0
0

Here’s a roundup of life hacks that will help a busy woman and mom be more productive and squeeze more out of her week.

1. Shop and prep ahead

So you're rolling along with your busy week, and the next thing you know, your household is out of everything. A midweek grocery store run puts a big speed bump right in your momentum. Have a complete grocery list and get all of your shopping done on the weekend before a busy week. If you have time to make some slow cooker meals and divide them into single-serve containers for quick meals, you will be way ahead of food planning on the fly.

2. The A list

Image: Rob and Stephanie Levy via Wikimedia Commons

A to-do list arm tat may not be your thing, but most busy people make some sort of list. It's easy to get disorganized when you don't have a system that works for you. Whether you use color-coding, grouping or making separate lists for immediate, secondary and less necessary action items, explore some different list methods until you find one that works best with your personal style.

3. Clock in

Try setting all of your clocks 15 to 20 minutes ahead, and don’t rely on the clock on your phone. You will find that you will be ready ahead of time and can use those extra few minutes to do some organization, pay a bill or just take a breath and enjoy the knowledge that you are not in a rush from running late.

4. Don't be alarmed

Image: Alan Cleaver / Wikimedia Commons

While you are tinkering with your clocks, you can explore the alarm functions on them and try setting alarms in different parts of your house to gently prompt you about specific things to do. Reminders on your phone alarm can also be useful. When you become aware of something you need to do at a specific time, set it into your phone clock and set a nice alarm tone for it.

5. Calendar girl

Integrate your personal calendar with your work calendar. If you use a program like Outlook and share it on a network with co-workers and you're worried about sharing details with others, you can filter the viewing options for personal appointments. Having everything on one schedule eliminates the potential of booking overlapping engagements.

6. Monotask

The most recent time-management studies say that multitasking is out and monotasking is in. Experts say multitasking not only reduces productivity, it can be really bad for you. People generally get more done and do it better when they focus on one thing at a time, finish it and then move on to the next item. This singular approach also helps reduce the overwhelming feeling that can come from looking at the big picture and realizing there is so much to do.

7. Good morning

While that snooze button sometimes seems to just keep pressing itself, try eliminating the extra 40 winks and wake up a half-hour earlier. Rather than working on projects into the night when you are sleepy and focus-challenged, utilize some extra time in the morning to get a few things done when you are fresh. You'll be surprised at how this can help squeeze more time out of your busy week.

Dear moms, I hope someone warns you that your kids will grow up and leave you

0
0

There have been some truly heartwarming and touching blog posts written recently about what it means to be a mom. "They Should've Warned Me" is all about how the author was warned about what was coming next, but she was totally unprepared for the overwhelming love and joy she would feel as a parent. At the other end of the spectrum, we have "I'm Glad They Warned Me," where this author speaks about the importance of moms sharing their truths and experiences, and how being honest about the scary and negative parts of motherhood can help other women. Both these writers have valid points and good for them for sharing them with the rest of the world. But I'm here to warn both of them. Part of me can't help being totally amused by how important both these women feel their views and emotions and opinions and roles of mom are — because in a few years no one is going to give a shit.

Now don't get me wrong moms, yes, your job as Mom is very important and one of the 'most important jobs a woman can do' and you will always love and treasure being a mom and blah blah blah. Here's your Hallmark card and your dozen pink carnations and your cup of lukewarm tea. Put your feet up and enjoy your kids growing old and getting jobs and having families of their own and you sitting alone and getting the privilege of being a babysitting grandma on occasion. No one cares about your views on co-sleeping or diapering or vaccinating or whether or not you were a damn activist or formula feeder when your babies were little, least of all your daughter and son-in-law or daughter-in-law and son who now all have kids of their own. Do you know what happens to women with grandchildren who spout their views on motherhood? They get eye rolls.

Is that who you want to be? The boring old lady who people roll their eyes at?

It's all fine and good you have such passionate feelings about motherhood now but you best remind yourself in a few short years these kids you are so enraptured with will grow up and get on.

And this is a good thing.

Now listen, yes, your kids when they start having kids of their own will want your help and opinions and views on being a mom. They will ask for advice and for your sugar cookie recipe and to borrow money. You and your views on parenting will not be forgotten. I'm sure being a grandma is one of the most fulfilling roles there is. All the old ladies I know seem to really get into it. I myself am looking forward to it.

But to you "They Should Have Warned Me" and "I'm Glad They Warned Me" moms, I'm here to give you another warning:

You are not your children.

You are your own person, with your own feelings, needs and yes, interests.

One day your kids will grow up and you will no longer be so totally consumed by all these things, the overwhelming love you felt while holding your newborn, how hard it was when your babies were sick, how lonely you felt in those first few days of motherhood.

You will still adore and love your kids and you will listen to them complain about midterms and help them pick out a prom dress and put away money for college and you will start to remember that yeah, you are a human too, and there is more to you than being a mom. I'm here to warn you for every overwhelming joyous moment you have as a mom, there is also joy in your kids getting older and no longer needing you to hold their pudgy little hand as they cross the street. There is joy in getting to sleep in on Sundays without cereal to pour or the sound of cartoons blaring from downstairs. There is joy in reading a book without being interrupted, with serving dinners where no one complains about eating broccoli, with spending alone adult time with your partner and not worrying about some kid banging on the door. I'm here to warn you that you will be able to go to Target and not leave the store with a toy in your cart. I'm here to warn you that you will one day make friends and not care if your kids are the same age or even if these people have kids. I'm here to warn you that there won't be a glass left on the counter, or a Lego to step on, or anyone to bathe or potty train or spoon feed or rock to sleep.

I'm here to warn you that there will just be you, Mom.

And yes, you will be surrounded by family and friends and your children but most of all it will be you.

I'm here to warn you that it's OK to be something other than Mom.

The NFL domestic violence PSA means women have one less way out

0
0

The PSA films a home, torn apart, with a voice-over between a 911 dispatcher and a woman who is using the guise of ordering a pizza to convince the dispatcher to send help.

"A large with half pepperoni, half mushroom," the woman says.

"You know you called 911. This is an emergency line," the dispatcher replies.

"Do you know how long it will be?"

"OK, ma’am. Is everything OK over there? Do you have an emergency or not?"

"Yes."

The video is harrowing and emotive, the destruction and fear evident. But with 54 percent of Super Bowl viewership being male, I can't help but think of the women who will see that commercial while sitting next to their abusers and have one less way to ask for help. Whose awareness are we really raising? The guise of ordering takeout — a method that seemed to come from a Reddit thread about 911 dispatchers eight months ago — is one fewer option for women who already have too few safe ways to ask for help.

One in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Even leaving is dangerous — more than 70 percent of domestic violence murders happen after the victim has left. So is the PSA helpful, a step in the right direction? Or is the time for awareness over and the time for action and justice present?
