School board changes policies to prevent gay kids from having clubs

$
0
0

The Rankin County School Board was recently prompted to develop a policy change due to a potential student-led group at Brandon High School — essentially, a student asked a teacher to sponsor a student-led, gay-straight alliance group. There are such groups in schools all over the country, but the administration for this school district, in particular superintendent Lynn Weathersby, wanted to not only ax this group, but all such groups in the future.

At a school board meeting, Weathersby was reported to have said, "I talked to [board attorney] Freddie [Harrell] and several administrators about what we could legally do to limit organizations like that on campus that we don't want to endorse and don't want."

Harrell himself mentioned that he feared such groups would violate school policies that are already in place, such as abstinence-only sex education.

And here's where I start to see red. A group like this is meant to support LGBT kids and is supposed to be a place where they can feel safe and accepted. An organization like this is also where LGBT and straight folks can come together to work on important, serious issues, like anti-LGBT bullying and discrimination, which are real problems that can have disastrous consequences on young people.

Harrell's reasoning is beyond insulting as well. A "gay club" wouldn't be a school-sponsored sex club and is not meant to promote gay porn or hookups. We should also note that gay people don't have more sex than heterosexual people do. And just because a group focuses on sexual orientation, it doesn't mean the group is about having sex — just like a gay or transgender adult isn't more likely to be a pedophile than someone who is heterosexual (I'm looking at you, Michelle Duggar).

Human Rights Campaign Mississippi state director Rob Hill has requested the school board reverse its decision. "This policy sends a harmful message to LGBT students in Rankin County that they are not welcomed within their classrooms, at school functions or on the bus," he said in a statement. "The board's actions tell LGBT students that they should be ashamed of who they are and that their lives are valued less than their peers."

Groups dedicated to providing a safe school environment should always be allowed, and fortunately, federal law is on the students' side. Forget the ridiculous myths that surround gay people — these kids are not looking to fornicate on school grounds or turn the other kids gay. Change the policy, Rankin County School District. Embrace your students, and help them support one another in a safe school environment.

WE tv gives America something ABC couldn't: A black bachelor

More: Jimmy Kimmel's plans for The Bachelor's Chris Soules are "so messed up"

A new dating reality show on WE tv hopes to change that: It's cast a black bachelor for the first season of Match Made in Heaven, airing beginning in February.

The show centers on Shawn Bullard, a successful real estate broker and self-proclaimed millionaire, aided on his quest for love by Pastor Ken Johnson, spiritual adviser to the Indianapolis Colts. According to the promo video, Bullard has 24 gorgeous, successful, mostly minority women to choose from.

WE tv describes the show this way: "Not only does the pastor weigh in on Shawn's choices, but when his very outspoken mother moves in, she too has a say on who could potentially be her daughter-in-law. While some ladies are sane and sweet, others are downright devilish leading to plenty of drama and bad behavior."

More: Why The Bachelor girls riding tractors in bikinis shouldn't be on TV

And if the promo is any indication, "plenty of drama" is an understatement. There are dates, strong feelings, Bullard's mother telling the women that their "big boobs and big butts may go for Shawn, but it doesn't go for me."

Basically, it looks just as equal parts dramatic, awkward, hilarious and sweet as ABC's The Bachelor — but without the complete lack of diversity that sparked a lawsuit against The Bachelor and ABC in 2012 (the suit was dismissed).

The Bachelor is on Season 19 now and has yet to cast a black lead. Is it just us, or is that kind of ridiculous?

We're super stoked to see what this new show has to offer our guilty pleasure reality TV binge-watching. Check out the teaser video below, and then head to the comments to tell us what you think. Will you watch the show? Let us know.

Better Call Saul and 151 other January-April 2015 TV premiere dates

January

January

Highlights: Jan. 29 is going to be a very busy day for us. We've already organized to take the day off work, so we have adequate time to prepare for the elation that is the return of TGIT. Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder all answered a bunch of questions we had in their fall finales and then promptly gave us cause to ask a whole lot more questions. It was cliffhanger-central, and we can't wait to finally get back up off that cliff.

More: 13 Things about Tina Fey's new Netflix show

Also on Jan. 29 is our reason for needing to take a day of bereavement leave on the following Monday: Parenthood is wrapping up its seven-season run. We have no doubt the series finale will require all the Kleenex, and then we're also concerned about how Kleenex will manage to stay in business when this show is no longer on the air. But more importantly, how will we manage to stay afloat when this show is no longer on the air?

February

February

Highlights: February is a very busy month for us where new shows are concerned. First, the Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul, premieres over two nights on Feb. 8 and 9, and we'll obviously be tuning in and hoping it fills the Walter White-size hole in our hearts. Matthew Perry's new show, The Odd Couple, premieres on CBS on Feb. 19, and although the odd couple in question is not Monica Geller and Chandler Bing, we love Perry and are keen to support anything he does. The final new show to pique our interest this month is The Slap, which premieres Feb. 12 on NBC. This show is based on an Australian series, which was based on a book, and examines what happens after a child is slapped at a family barbecue by someone who is not the child's parent.

More: The Better Call Saul trailer is here, and it's a fantastic freak-out (VIDEO)

In returning shows news, the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead will hit our screens on Feb. 8, and we would pretty much have to actually be dead to miss that.

March

March

Highlights: Tina Fey's new show, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, premieres on Netflix on March 6, and we will be all over that because we can't help but pick up whatever Tina is putting down. Also on the March new show horizon is Younger, which makes its debut March 31 on TV Land. It features Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff, and that should be all you need to know to be on board with this new show. James Corden will make his long-awaited debut on The Late Late Show, and this guy is just so gosh-darn cute and adorable that we want to marry him, so we'll obviously be watching that.

In bittersweet news, Glee will air its series finale on March 20. Although Glee hasn't been good in years, we'll still tune in to say goodbye to our once-beloved show. It seems only right.

More: Confession — I loved Glee, but it should have ended three seasons ago

The March calendar also gives us a little peek into what to expect in April. With the return of Outlander and Game of Thrones on April 4 and 12, respectively, it's comforting to know we'll have glorious television to watch well into the middle of 2015.

Chastain received the honor thanks to her incredible body of work in the short seven years she has been in the industry, particularly the four big films she starred in during 2014: The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them, Miss Julie, Interstellar and A Most Violent Year.

But, in a classy and humble move, the star devoted her speech to others.

"Sometimes as actors, we are the ones who get heaped with the praise, and there are so many people that are equally deserving," she said before giving credit to her incredible team.

Then Chastain did something even more stirring. She spoke up.

Chastain wrapped her speech with a call to arms. "I'm an optimist, and I can't help but feel hopeful about the future of film — especially looking at all these beautiful people in this room," she confessed.

Bobby Brown's cheating comments about Whitney Houston seem insensitive

More: Lifetime's Whitney Houston biopic — 4 Reasons we actually think it'll be good

Access Hollywood will air an in-depth interview special with Brown on Saturday, immediately following the premiere of Houston's biopic, and according to E! News, the interview includes some dirty secrets.

One thing Brown isn't holding back about? Rumors of his and Houston's infidelity during their marriage, something both denied before the superstar singer's death in 2012.

"There was infidelity in the marriage, yes, on both parts," he said, according to E! News' report. "Both of us cheated on each other — period. So that's hard to swallow for both of us. I just think when two people that love each other as much as we loved each other, when they start drifting apart different people come into the situation, into the scenario, and we make mistakes."

More: Cop sues city over Whitney Houston post-mortem leer

Brown, who had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, now 21, with Houston, continued, "People make mistakes. We're human."

Is it just us, or is it kind of trashy of him to be airing all that dirty laundry after Houston's death? Considering how fiercely both of them battled the infidelity rumors while Houston was alive, it kind of feels like Brown is now dragging her name through the mud when she can't defend herself.

But according to director, Angela Bassett, the forthcoming Houston biopic puts a lot of focus on the singer's tumultuous life, including her rise to the top of the charts, her drug use and, of course, her relationship woes.

"I just want them to go on the journey between Whitney and Bobby. I considered it a love story... they were there to love and care for one another, and it was quite a journey," Bassett said. "I think we as fans, audience... those that looked on — we thought we had some say in it. We really didn't have any say in their love affair. They say all we have is ourselves and our capacity to love, to love ourselves, to love one another and to just spread more love and joy in this world."

Michael Keaton's next film could make you hate McDonald's

More: Birdman trailer with Michael Keaton is both bizarre and incredible

A new film called The Founder will chronicle the chain's rise from neighborhood hamburger joint to minimum-wage monolith, and Cinema Blend reports it wasn't always a feel-good tale of American entrepreneurialism.

Michael Keaton has signed on to play one of the leading roles — that of key franchise builder, Ray Kroc — in the film that reportedly will resemble David Fincher's The Social Network and Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood: a tale of a meteoric rise with a serious dark side.

According to Cinema Blend, the movie will stay pretty true to life. It'll tell the tale of Kroc, an Illinois businessman who partners up with Mac and Dick McDonald, owners of a California burger shack that's been using mass production techniques — inspired by the industrialization of the auto industry — to invent a new concept: fast food. Kroc's business savvy mixed with the McDonald brothers' innovative ideas would, within a few decades, become the largest food chain in the world — a billion-dollar industry leader with franchise locations in well over 100 countries.

The site reports that John Lee Hancock, of The Blind Side and Saving Mr. Banks, is directing, and the script is penned by Robert Siegel, who also wrote The Wrestler and Turbo. Few other details are known about the forthcoming flick, other than it's not likely to paint a rosy picture of McDonald's, already a favorite punching bag for those who oppose corporate America, and in light of steadily declining sales and decreasing popularity among millennials, McDonald's probably isn't too happy about that.

There is a lot of frustration when it comes to finding clothing in larger sizes that is functional, cute and affordable, as evidenced by this genius Venn diagram from Tumblr blog wtf, plus size clothing manufacturers?. And that definitely extends beyond street clothes, with athletic companies being some of the last to recognize the needs of the plus-size market.

Every woman deserves to feel both cute and comfortable while she sweats and thankfully women of all shapes and sizes are finally getting more options. There is no shortage of options for straight-sized ladies, but sometimes plus-size fitness gear can be slim pickings (har, har).

1. Athleta

Size range: XXS-2X (00-20). This athletic giant has a wide variety of mid-priced tops, bottoms, outwear and swimsuits. Not only do they get rave reviews for quality and comfort, but also the review section allows women to rate individual features of each fit so you know exactly where something runs larger or smaller. (Pictured: Splatter Be Free knicker, $64)

2. Lands' End

Size range: XS-3X (0-26). Lands' End has always been a great place for affordable, yet durable, basic fitness apparel, and they've now added fitness clothing to the list. You can find high-quality tees, pants and jackets in a variety of colors. Our ladies raved about the fit. (Pictured: Half-zip pullover, $35)

3. JCPenney

Plus size active wear from JCPennys

Size range: XS-5X* (0-34). No boring black capris here! The Xersion and Made For Life house brands offer a wide range of affordable fitness clothing with the same fun patterns and styles in their plus sizes as they have in their regular sizes. While their site boasts up to a 5X in size, when I looked at their fitness gear, the largest I could find was a 3X (26W). (Pictured: Xersion half-zip jacket and side-inset capris, $28 each)

4. Old Navy

Size range: XS-4X (0-30). Your favorite store for fashion deals also has super affordable workout gear. While the tops, bottoms, sweats and swimsuits don't have all the technical bells and whistles, they're still well made, comfy and cute. Be sure to check the reviews on each item for more details on how it fits real women. (Pictured: Active GoDRY word-graphic tank, $15)

5. Lineage Wear

Size range: XS-3X. Uniquely patterned leggings are the hottest thing in yoga studios right now. Lineage Wear specializes in fun leggings that are durable enough for a Bikram session, but cute enough to wear anywhere. Each adorable pattern comes in three lengths: calf, ankle and mid-foot. (Pictured: Watercolor leggings, $58)

6. Lane Bryant Livi Active

Size range: 14-32. The famous plus-size retailer's new activewear line is not only comfortable and durable, but one of the few workout lines cute enough to wear on the street as well as in the gym. Fit and fabric were variable from piece to piece — so trying things on is a must. The site says sizes go up to 32, but every item we checked only went up to a 28. (Pictured: Sparkle wicking active tank, $45)

7. Under Armour

Size range: XS-XXL (0-18). Beloved by professional athletes for its high-performance, all-season gear, Under Armour offers basic tops, bottoms and jackets with plenty of high-end details for the serious exerciser. (Ripshot short, $35)

8. Via Privé Mamma

Size range: XS-XL. While this is technically a maternity line, many non-expecting plus-size women proclaimed their love for the high-quality workout gear, saying it fit and flattered their curves — no baby bump necessary. The stretchy tops, bottoms and jackets work especially well for women who carry their weight in their midsection. (Snapdragon tank, $56)

9. Miraclesuit

Size range: 6-24. When it comes to swimming laps or beach workouts, nothing compares to Miraclesuit for a flattering, comfortable fit. The company offers a large variety of one-piece suits, tops, bottoms and cover-ups. (Pictured: Touche colorblock swimsuit, $136)

11 Things men do that are really clingy

That's because what first comes off as a flattering, highly attentive gesture — he asks you to call him after every meal just so he can hear your voice and make sure you ate your veggies (OK, wait, that's weird, too) — quickly turns into your worst nightmare; a needy, clingy and borderline frightening partner who may just have a spare key to your apartment.

We asked a random group of women to reveal their most cringe-worthy clingy boyfriend stories. Brace yourself — here are 11 of the worst we've heard:

1. The sign holder

"My ex was upset over a stupid fight we had because he didn't want to go to my friend's party. I told him we needed some time to cool off and went to a shopping mall with my mom. An hour later, my mom and I returned to my parents' house to find him sitting by the front door, waiting for me to get home. This might seem sweet to some. So I should mention here that he was also holding a sign that said 'Let's party.'"

2. The squatter

"I had a guy refuse to leave my apartment after I broke up with him. He left after my cat bitch-slapped him in the face. That might be more psychotic than clingy, though."

5. The pick-up artist

"He insisted on picking me up from work. Each and every day. I started to feel like he was my babysitter instead of my boyfriend. Right before I broke up with him, I actually used to duck out the back door of my building and call him when I was a few blocks away to apologize for 'getting out early.'"

"He used to ask me to call him every single day when I got to work. I worked in an office in downtown Manhattan and took the express bus, but he acted like I was a journalist in Baghdad."

7. Missed call man

"I missed a few of his phone calls one day because I was busy at work. When I saw him later that night at dinner, he took my phone and refused to give it back because, as he explained, I obviously don't need a phone since I never answer his calls."

In the controversial film, Slate plays Donna — a 20-something stand-up comedian who, following a drunken one-night stand, learns she is pregnant and decides to have an abortion.

Since the film's release, Slate has often spoken of how rewarding she found it to act in a film that portrayed a woman's right to choose, not as the defining moment of her life, but, rather, just a normal part of it — like starting a new job or any other big decision a woman makes.

When Slate took the stage on Thursday night to accept her award, the film's message was clearly in the forefront of her thoughts.

"Thank you very much for having me here tonight and to the critics for shining a light on our film," she said. "I am so proud to be in a movie that is joyful and thoughtful and depicts a modern and authentic experience of unplanned pregnancy."

In the string of thank-yous, Slate doled out one to her parents, whom she praised for "encouraging me to be intelligent and kind and creative," before addressing the core sentiment of her speech by thanking the people ultimately responsible for Obvious Child.

Impassioned, she thanked Gillian Robespierre and Elisabeth Holm, "who wrote this movie and who assert that even while we're fighting for our rights, we can do so creatively." She added, "Activism and creative expression can go together."

Before the times-up music could hustle her off stage, Slate gave out a little cheer, shouting happily, "See you in the future!"

We certainly hope so, Slate. We'll be holding you to that.

Chris Brown in trouble after all for concert during Fiesta Nightclub shooting

More: Chris Brown performance has terrifying end when 5 shots were fired (VIDEO)

People magazine reports that a Los Angeles judge revoked the R&B singer's probation on Thursday because Brown was on the scene of a San Jose, California, nightclub where five people were shot and wounded, despite a provision in his probation that said he wasn't allowed to leave LA.

Brown attended his Thursday hearing with his mom and girlfriend, People reports. He wasn't taken into custody, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin reportedly asked the probation department to further investigate the shooting to see whether it involved Brown in any way, according to the Associated Press.

There's no word yet on what the violation means for Brown or whether he'll have to serve any time for the incident, but he has been ordered to return to court on March 20.

More: See the ring that had us thinking Chris Brown got engaged for Christmas

According to People, the shooting happened at the Fiesta Nightclub in San Jose, where Brown was giving a private performance at a birthday party. He was in the middle of his song, "Loyal," when, according to Entertainment Weekly, San Jose police said that "an altercation in an area of the venue resulted in gunshots."

Brown was rushed off stage by his security team as the fight resulted in non-lethal injuries for five people.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Brown tweeted, "I'm 100," immediately after the incident to let fans know he was OK, but the tweet was deleted soon after.

People reports that Los Angeles district attorney spokesman Jane Robison told the Los Angeles Times the only provision Brown had violated was the one saying he couldn't leave LA, but that the singer also still needs to complete 200 of 1,000 hours of assigned community service.

Prestigious, yes, but dull... well, definitely not.

He joined in the dance routine, stopping just shy of ripping off his own clothes. Although not everyone looked too psyched about the skit (*cough* Patricia Arquette), the camera panned in on a few cougars sitting near the stage who seemed pretty pleased with the performance.

But just when you thought it couldn't get any better, Strahan took a break... and came back for more.

10 Easy coffee hacks for a better brew

$
0
0

Luckily there are some very simple steps you can take when you make coffee at home that will vastly improve the resulting cup o' joe. From adding a pinch of salt to rinsing paper coffee filters before use, these hacks will help you brew coffee so good, soon you'll be saying, "Starbucks who?"

1. Make cold brew coffee in the blender

For an iced coffee that's smoother than hot coffee you leave in the fridge to cool, blend 4.5 ounces of whole coffee beans until coarsely ground. Add 3 cups of cold water, and let steep in the fridge for 12 hours. Then, strain through a fine mesh strainer lined with a coffee filter, and you're left with a cold-brewed coffee concentrate you can dilute with water to your preferred strength.

blended cold brew coffee

blended cold brew coffee

2. Use cinnamon, not sugar

If you're trying to cut back on sugar, then adding a dash of cinnamon to your coffee is a good way to liven up its flavor while eliminating or reducing the need for any sweetener.

3. Use canned coconut milk as a rich, nondairy creamer

Nondairy creamers tend to be loaded with sketchy preservatives and artificial ingredients. Instead, try full-fat, canned coconut milk. It will give you the same rich, decadent texture as real dairy cream (unlike the thinner coconut milk that comes in a carton). Try to find a brand with the least amount of ingredients (just coconut and water, if possible) for the best texture and purest coconut flavor.

4. Freeze coffee for ice cubes

If you're a fan of homemade iced coffee, then try this trick. Next time you have leftover coffee, pour it into an ice cube tray, and freeze it. The cubes will be able to keep your next batch of iced coffee cold without watering it down.

5. Coffee too bitter? Add salt.

A dash of salt can help counteract bitter or off flavors in your coffee, making it more palatable. As long as you use a small amount, your coffee won't be noticeably saltier, especially if you drink it with cream and sugar.

6. Use flavor extracts instead of splurging on fancy fake creamers

Craving a vanilla or almond coffee but trying to cut back on expensive, overly sweetened, processed creamers? Simply add half-and-half or cream to your coffee with a drop or two of your favorite flavor extract. You can even mix and match to create fun flavor creations, like vanilla-maple and buttered rum.

7. Use filtered water for a more pure coffee flavor

If you have hard water, can taste the chlorine in your tap or just don't enjoy the flavor of the water you get from the sink, you shouldn't brew your coffee with it. Off flavors in the water you brew with aren't masked by the coffee and can end up ruining it altogether. Use filtered water or spring water instead so you know you're starting off with a clean-tasting base.

8. Clean your coffeemaker

Just because you use it only for coffee doesn't mean you don't have to clean it. Coffee residue can build up inside your machine after prolonged use, imparting off flavors to your brew. For best results, once a month, fill the reservoir chamber with half white vinegar and half water, run it through the machine, and then run a few cycles with plain water to rinse (using fresh water each time). Don't forget to wash the carafe between each batch of coffee you make too.

9. Rinse your coffee filters before each brew

For the purest coffee, you should rinse your filters each time you brew a pot. Flush paper filters with hot water to remove any woody, chemical flavors, and pour hot water through reusable filters to remove any residue. This will help you achieve a cleaner-tasting pot of coffee with minimal effort.

10. Reuse old coffee grounds

Hate throwing away all those coffee grounds? You can reuse them in plenty of ways. Scatter them in your flower beds to give a fertilizing boost to your garden, keep them in the back of your fridge as a deodorizer, or mix them with olive oil to create a luxurious body scrub.

Barf.

Pretty much any terrifying sound in the world other than my own kids doing the nasty. It's just so creepy! To make matters worse, Coleen claimed that when she heard it, she was dead impressed.

I don't know about you guys, but if my kid left me a voice mail and I realized they were having sex, I would delete it right away and never mention it and not go on a TV show and talk about it. Nor would I save the voice mail and play it for my kid and his girlfriend when they came over, as Nolan claims she did. Awkward lady, totally awkward.

She's making us LOL with her hilarious tweets and candid interviews.

In a recent interview with Nylon magazine, the Pitch Perfect and Twilight actress said she isn’t worried about possibly offending anyone on social media.

Kendrick told the magazine, whose cover she is gracing next month, "I don’t give a f***. Twitter is only 140 characters. There's really not that much that I could reveal, then later regret."

More: How to be amazing on Twitter according to Anna Kendrick

So much truth.

Yet we all know how celebrities and other famous folks have totally blown it in those short 140 characters (hello Chris Brown, Anthony Weiner, Alec Baldwin, Kenneth Cole and a slew of others who have managed to be as offensive as humanly possible in those 140 thoughtless microblogs).

But the candid actress keeps it pretty light, albeit hilarious, on her Twitter feed. And above all, she keeps it honest.

For example, a few of her most recent tweets are:

What else would you expect from a woman whose best friend describes her as "the weirdest combo of impulsive tequila-drinking party girl and 80-year-old senator's wife from Vermont."

It's an oddly specific and poignant characterization, but we totally see what she's talking about.

When Nylon asked Kendrick about her "embarrassing" Ryan Gosling tweet from two years ago, that pretty still much gets continuous circulation, she still had no regrets and no wish for a filter.

She says, "Thank God I've never been in a room with him!"

She continues, saying, "I don't feel embarrassed, though. I'm sure he has a sense of humor. But I'd probably feel like I'd have to address [the tweet], and I'd end up saying something to make it much, much worse."

Yeah, probably.

But then she'd tweet about it, and we'd all laugh and laugh and laugh.

These chicken enchilada pinwheels pack a punch of Mexican flavor

Using shredded rotisserie chicken breast saves a lot of time in the kitchen but also adds protein and extra flavor. Rather than using full-fat cream cheese in this recipe, I opted for creamy Greek yogurt along with fresh veggies and enchilada seasonings. If you want to keep these vegetarian, then omit the chicken, and just add extra veggies.

Easy chicken enchilada pinwheel recipe

These pinwheels are filled with an easy shredded chicken-enchilada mixture. You can make these up to two days ahead of time. Just roll up, chill and slice when ready to enjoy.

Yields 6

Prep time: 15 minutes | Inactive time: 2 hours | Total time: 2 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup enchilada sauce
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup finely shredded rotisserie chicken breast
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions
  • 1/4 cup minced red onions
  • 1 minced red bell pepper
  • 1 small handful fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 6 burrito-size, all-natural flour or whole-wheat tortillas

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, enchilada sauce, taco seasoning and shredded cheese, and mix well.
  2. Fold in the chicken, green and red onions, bell pepper and fresh cilantro.
  3. Divide and spread the filling evenly over the tops of the tortillas.
  4. Roll up the tortillas as tightly as possible, and wrap them securely with plastic wrap.
  5. Chill the tortillas in the refrigerator for several hours or for up to 2 days.
  6. When ready to serve, remove the plastic wrap, and slice each tortilla into rounds. Place on a platter, and serve.

Legoland's new Heartlake City isn't building the right message for kids

The brand "has always been boy-dominated," said Adrian Jones, the park general manager. The solution? Pink and purple bricks!

A clever web comic recently went viral thanks to the very simple punchline. You only need one LEGO piece to make any LEGO set a toy for girls. Just slap a plastic ponytail on a minifigure's head. Bam. It's for girls.

The new Heartlake City area of the park, aimed specifically at girls, will include a convertible for girls to take selfies in, a shopping mall and a horse-themed ride. The LEGO Friends themselves were on hand to introduce the plans. Unlike all of the other characters in the park — giant walking boxy minifigures — they're portrayed by real young women who are mostly wearing skirts. (Girls don't need pretty, thin women representing their imaginative toys, but that's another story entirely.)

What's the big deal, right? Girls can like taking selfies and hitting the mall. Girls should be allowed to have their own LEGO sets too, right?

Think about the real message here. Slow down your knee-jerk response that girls deserve their own toys — and consider the implications.

If Heartlake City is for girls, in all its pony-loving glory, the rest of the park is for boys. The dinosaur exploration area, the fire station, the city streets, the pilot school and the archeology-themed ride. Those are for boys. The science area where you build LEGO sets? Boys. The castle and dragon ride? Yeah, those are for boys. Jousting? Boys. Playground. Boys.

Girls get slapped with gender expectations and stereotypes and boys get to slay dragons and build things.

We need to stop treating our kids like this. Kids aren't stupid and they learn gender expectations from us. There's no natural law that makes pink and purple for girls and primary colors for boys.

Girls go to Legoland and they have a blast at Legoland, because up until now it's been a spectacularly gender-neutral park, capable of lighting up the imaginations of boys and girls alike. Before the higher ups at Legoland came up with the brilliant idea to make an area just for girls, girls somehow enjoyed the park the same way boys did.

There's nothing wrong with Heartlake City existing, but don't present the pink and purple paradise as a clever way to finally appeal to girls. Girls were already having fun, and they don't need their imaginations limited by adults trying to make an extra buck.

Cameron Esposito: Why the comedy genre is really lacking women

$

If you were a fan of the Chelsea Handler show, Chelsea Lately, it's likely you're already a fan of Cameron Esposito, who was a regular panelist on the popular late-night show. If you're just discovering Esposito for the first time, you're going to have a lot of upcoming opportunities to get to know her.

Originally from Chicago, we were surprised to hear that this funny gal started her career as a ringmaster in a circus. "It was an awesome job, I loved it. It's so much fun to hang out with people who are so dedicated to their craft — when you hang out with someone who does the flying trapeze for a living, you can really see all the hours of work they put into it. And their bodies are insane."

As much as she liked her job touring with the circus, her true dream was to be a stand-up comedian and write her own material, something Esposito says is extremely demanding work.

"There's an interesting disconnect between the preparation for stand-up and what stand-up looks like. Doing it well should look like you've never said these words before. Because the audience is often thinking, 'God, how does this person have the natural ability to talk jokes for an hour?' But it's all crafted over years."

While comedy has traditionally been a men's game, more and more women like Melissa McCarthy and Tina Fey are finally becoming big players. "There's more men involved in comedy than women. It's a numbers game. There's also more male audience members in comedy — that's my on-the-ground experience going to shows. But I do think there's been a massive change."

We had to ask Esposito why she thinks forging a career in comedy is so challenging for women. She said she thinks it's partly cultural.

"Women are often more encouraged to be listeners or to be helpful, or to be accommodating, and not taught to be leaders or be well-spoken or prove their point. Of course, that's what a stand-up is: A well-spoken leader who proves their point. I think that women have a little bit of an adjustment to go through in order to be ready to be on stage. You can do it yourself, it can be an adult adjustment. Or it can be something that happens because of your personality type. If you've never seen someone who looks like you do something, it becomes very hard to imagine yourself doing that. So, the best way to get more women started in comedy is to just keep doing our jobs," she said, adding that, "It's awesome that Barack Obama is president, it's a similar thing."

Esposito recently sold her first book idea, but claims, "I never thought I would be a writer." The book deal is so new, she couldn't share any of the details with us yet, but she did say it would be autobiographical in nature.

World's Funniest Fails

Image: Fox Television

After recently appearing on the IFC show Maron with Marc Maron, Esposito can soon be seen on Fox's World's Funniest Fails, hosted by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews, where a panel of celebrities and comedians analyze "epic fail" videos.

Esposito will also be performing live at the upcoming Comedy Night Too, a charity event to benefit Ivanhoe Elementary School in Los Angeles on Jan. 24. Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine) and Jeff Garlin (The Goldbergs) will also be performing.

Poet Staceyann Chin and her daughter share key message on consent (VIDEO)

Living Room Protest III

Living Room Protest III

The video is a part of Chin's "Living Room Protest" series, in which she talks with Zuri about various social justice issues, all in a way that is accessible to a child. In their latest, Chin and her daughter discuss Zuri's feelings over being picked up. Zuri says she doesn't like when people pick her up without permission, and as she talks, her mother both empowers her to share these feelings while reminding her to be clear about what she's asking for.

The topic of consent seems to be pushed to the wayside for many parents until their children are teens and all of a sudden it becomes necessary because of sex and rape. But why should that be the first time kids understand what consent is all about? For some it might be too late. Consent isn't something that should be relegated to talks about sex. Instead, let's start talking about it when our kids are young. Not only will it help them better understand the concept, but it will provide them with more agency over their bodies, a strong voice to talk about it and the understanding about respecting others and their bodies as well.

Chin and her daughter delve into it at their access point: being picked up. For other kids it might be about unwanted hugs or tickles. Whatever it may be, empower your children to speak up for themselves and their bodily autonomy and to know that they have the power to give consent — or not — to being touched, picked up, tickled, etc…

I for one love how Staceyann and Zuri Chin tackle consent and can't wait to see what's next for them in their "Living Room Protest" series!

Sam, the NFL's first openly gay draft pick, was first taken by the St. Louis Rams before being cut at training camp, then picked up by the Cowboys before being let go in training camp — but at least one guy wants to hang on to him for a long time to come.

The defensive end proposed to his college sweetheart Vito Cammisano at the Vatican, which is a nice little dig at an establishment that still forbids gay marriage.

The rumors of an engagement started a little over a week ago when one of Cammisano's friends posted her excited congratulations to the couple on Instagram, and Sam "liked" it — although neither lovebird publicly commented until today.

This was the gorgeous view the couple shared while the question was being popped: the timeless visage of Vatican City, a perfect place to celebrate what we hope will be a timeless love.
