What makes this recipe even better is that it’s cooked in the slow cooker, so you can literally throw in the ingredients, set it and forget all about it until dinnertime.

10 Reasons why The Room is the WORST movie ever made

$

0

1. The evil genius of Tommy Wiseau

Tommy Wiseau wrote, directed and starred in The Room, thereby giving birth to this little devil-child of a movie. His strange brain and fevered ambition were the perfect cocktail to create a cinematic disaster.

2. Recycled love scene

What? The Room uses the same exact footage from one love scene over and over instead of shooting additional scenes. It wasn't a budget issue; Wiseau simply thought people wouldn't notice. FAIL!

4 Things Juno Temple just told us about Horns costar Daniel Radcliffe

3. Framed photograph of a spoon

For no apparent reason, the camera continuously pans across the spoon photograph, inspiring midnight audiences to bring plastic spoons to the theater and throw them whenever the spoon appears on on screen. It appears so many times, one fan reportedly went through several boxes by the end credits.

4. Weird dialogue about breast cancer

Claudette, the mother character in the film, tells her daughter, Lisa, that she has breast cancer. Lisa replies, "Don't worry about it. You'll be fine. They're curing lots of people every day." And the issue of her cancer is never addressed in the film again.

5. Football as symbol of male bonding

Whenever The Room tries to show that two men are good friends, it shows them throwing a football back and forth. While that doesn't sound too strange, it becomes very weird when the characters toss the ball just two feet away from each other.

6. The tux to nowhere

At one point, all the male characters appear in tuxes and, again, begin throwing a football to each other, but the reason why they're wearing tuxes is never explained.

7. Is it day? Night? Both?

Throughout the movie, establishing shots are at night but the scenes are shot in daylight, and vice versa.

8. Cheesy green-screen backdrop

All the rooftop scenes were shot in front of a static green-screen image that looks like it's from 1954.

9. Peter gets replaced

Actor Kyle Vogt started shooting the movie as the character Peter. Midway through the shooting, Vogt was replaced by another actor with no explanation. Peter is then called Steven, played by Greg Ellery, who acts like he's been with the other characters the whole time.

10. Denny is just creepy

Denny (Philip Haldiman) is the oldest-looking 17-year-old we've ever seen. He's obsessed with watching Johnny and Lisa have sex and isn't afraid to tell them so. He also gets involved in a dead-end storyline about a drug deal he's made. It's never addressed again. The moment where Denny almost gets shot is edited so poorly, it will have you cracking up.

Want more of The Room?

Award-winning screenwriter Robyn Paris, who played Michelle in the movie, is harnessing the power of Kickstarter to fund a mockumentary called The Room Actors: Where Are They Now?

Paris says her movie will be "a comedic look at what has happened to the actors from The Room since they appeared in the worst movie ever made."

The film will include documentary-style interviews and found footage. Paris follows these actors through their daily lives as they try to shake off The Room's overpowering disgrace. Sadly, as hard as they've tried, none of the actors has been able to escape the stigma.

While it may seem like these actors are looking for another 15 minutes of fame, Paris says that's not what her project is about. "We're already in the movie — we can't change that. We might as well have fun with it, enjoy it, because we can't erase ourselves from it."

Is it safe to give your pets human medication?

$

Human medications aren't for pets

According to the pet experts at Direct Line Pet Insurance, 78 percent of vets surveyed in July 2014 have treated pets that have ingested human medication in the last year. We know accidents happen and our dogs and cats can be tenacious at getting into things, but nearly one-third of these cases involved owners who deliberately gave their pets human medications hoping they would better the pet's health. Unfortunately, prescription and over-the-counter drugs for humans can cause illness and even death for our pets.

For example, if you give a painkiller, such as acetaminophen, to your cat to treat arthritis, you are putting it at a high risk of dying since cats cannot break down the drug.

Drugs and pets don't mix — even in small doses

The most common types of medication that vets report pets ingesting include painkillers, prescription drugs (for heart conditions or diabetes, for example), antidepressants, sleeping pills and, yes, even birth control pills. Direct Line Pet Insurance is calling on owners to be more vigilant in keeping drugs out of reach of their pets and to never deliberately give their pets human medications.

“It is concerning to see so many cases of pets ingesting human medication," says Madeline Pike, veterinary nurse at Direct Line Pet Insurance. "Human medication is extremely dangerous to pets and often results in them being treated with medication to induce vomiting or a fluid treatment, which may cause them great distress. Any procedure carries a risk for animals, so unnecessary treatments should be avoided at all costs. If you suspect that your pet has ingested human medication, it is essential that they see a vet immediately. If you are concerned about an illness your pet has, we strongly recommend seeking veterinary advice — do not assume that a smaller dose of human medication will suffice.”

Don't let your dog OD

Though the study reports that dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs have been brought in for vet treatment after human drug exposure, 76 percent of the cases involved dogs. Fortunately, if you get your dog to the vet within two hours of drug ingestion, the vet can induce vomiting and give your pup charcoal to soak up the toxins. If you wait to see how your dog will react to the drugs, it could be too late.

One vet reported that a Husky accidentally consumed a 40-count packet of ibuprofen and was not brought to the clinic until 16 hours later, which resulted in the dog dying from liver and kidney damage. No dog or pet owner should have to go through this.

What can you do?

You love your pets and want to do everything you can for them when they are sick or injured. However, giving them human medications isn't the answer. Prescription medications meant for people can cause illness and even death for your furry friends. If your pawed pal is in need of medical attention, instead of taking its health into your own hands, take it to a vet who can give your pet the care and treatment it deserves.

This dome is really a bed that drives you to work as you sleep

Dome

London-based designer Dominic Wilcox has just made your dreams come true... literally. The genius of a man has designed a driverless car that allows its passenger to take a snooze while the car handles the roads all on its own. This car of the future is controlled by a computer system that is said to change the roadways as we know it by using technology to avoid accidents and other hazardous road mishaps... like the famous bird-flippers, slowpokes and aggressive Nancys.

Dome

Made to look similar to a pod, Wilcox made the car in its unique design to show off the options that we'll have for future cars. Not needing any type of additional protective designs, owners can have any look they choose without sacrificing safety... or style.

Dome

This design, which was showcased at the London Design Festival mid-September, features stained glass for the outer shell. Attached to the wooden base of the vehicle using a copper foil technique, the top can be opened at the front and hinges at the back. If you'll notice, there are no controls in the vehicle, as Wilcox imagines that the "driver" will be able to control their car remotely. It's safe to assume he also doesn't think we need cup holders for our coffee cups with all of that extra sleep drivers will be getting in the pod.

Dome

Also referred to as the Taxi Robot, Dominic Wilcox has already created a website where potential consumers can start to design and dream of their future car. Outside of the sleeper bed, drivers can select a Jacuzzi design for those who wish for a little bubbly before work, a treehouse for the adults who just don't want to grow up, St. Paul's Cathedral for the very devout, and a few other options to fit the lifestyle of their choice.

Dome

Still only a concept, the car of the future has a bit more tweaks that will need to be worked out prior to hitting the market. In the interim, we'll just have to make do with a morning cup of joe to get us through our daily commute until we can enjoy safely snoozing on the road.

The British pop star kept hearing "rustling" noises inside her ear for a week before she decided to visit the doctor to have the issue checked out. When they peeked into her ear canal, the docs literally found something waving back at them from inside.

Fortunately, the singer's physicians were able to suction the spider out of Melua's ear and the insect actually lived to tell the tale. Apparently, according to an entomology professor at the University of Florida, Philip Koehler, spiders like dark, humid places, so Melua's little guest was "probably entering the canal as harborage, for heat, and/or for moisture."

Melua is a rising star in England and besides making headlines for her little spider ear resident, she is also becoming a popular singer. The songstress was given the best female artist honor and is also Europe's highest-selling European female artist to boot.

5 Things to know before seeing Thor: The Dark World

Below are five more things you may want to know about this up-and-coming artist, so check them out.

1. Melua was born in Kutaisi, Georgia (which was then part of the Soviet Union) on Sept. 16, 1984, and moved to Northern Ireland at the age of 8. When she was 14, she went to live in England and then got married to World Superbike racer James Toseland in January 2012.

2. The pretty brunette musician made her musical debut with Call Off the Search in 2003 at the young age of 19. The album reached the top of the United Kingdom album charts and sold 1.8 million copies in the first five months after being released.

5 Things to know about Britney Spears' boyfriend David Lucado

3. Melua really likes roller coasters, hang gliding and paragliding, so she is often referred to as an adrenaline junkie. In 2004 she was lowered from a 200-meter building in New Zealand at 60 mph.

4. An avid swimmer, Melua actually almost drowned in 2009 after she took in a lungful of water when diving in a lake near Heathrow Airport.

5. While she's mostly in check with her emotions, Melua actually suffered a nervous breakdown in September 2010 and was ordered to stop working for a few months. She was hospitalized for six weeks.

Iggy Azalea just had the worst wardrobe malfunction we've ever seen (VIDEO)

Some kids at a bar mitzvah on Sunday got an unexpected eyeful while Miss Azalea performed for them and accidentally flashed them her crotch.

Iggy Azalea puts someone on blast on Twitter, Hint: It's not Snoop Dogg

According to Gossip Cop, Azalea and Nick Jonas were both hired to perform at the lavish Beverly Hills party, and although the family paid to get one amazing performance, we're not sure how they felt about getting flashed, too.

Of course, the entire thing was captured on camera and the "Fancy" rapper looks to be in the middle of her performance of "Booty." She was going all-out, shaking her booty when something terrible happened: her pants split and revealed what appears to be her private bits. Poor Iggy!

Snoop Dogg apologizes to Iggy Azalea, but are we buying it?

To make matters worse, the Australian-born star didn't even notice her wardrobe malfunction and continued to perform with the gaping hole in her tight pants — that was, until the audience started screaming.

Unfortunately for Azalea, this was not the first time that she's had a wardrobe malfunction (and most probably not the last). If you remember the 2013 MTV EMAs, you'll recall when Azalea's barely there black dress moved and everyone saw right up her skirt, although the rapper claimed that she had been wearing flesh-colored underwear and we couldn't actually see it all. Let's hope she was wearing flesh-colored underwear this time around, too.

A wardrobe malfunction can happen to anyone, but we have to say we really feel sorry for Azalea.

Soon detecting cancer may be as simple as swallowing a pill

$
0
0

The super secretive Google X Lab, famous for projects like glucose-measuring contact lenses and driverless cars, recently announced a new project for public health: a pill you can swallow that will search your body for cancer cells, from the inside out. But does this mean the end to cancer or to privacy? Or both?

Andrew Conrad, head of Google's Life Sciences division, said in a press conference last week that they're looking into more ways to promote preventative medicine, as opposed to the current reactionary model. This means the company wants to help people find potential illness and treat it as early as possible rather than waiting until someone starts showing symptoms. But it's so difficult to find sneaky cancer cells in the body before they start mutating into full-blown disease — that is unless you have an inside view. This is exactly what they're hoping the Google Pill can do.

"You swallow a pill with nanoparticles and they're decorated in antibodies, molecules that detect other molecules," Conrad explained. "They course through your body and because the cores of these particles are magnetic you can call them somewhere. If you look at your wrist you can see that there are these superficial veins so just by putting a magnet there you can trap [the nanoparticles in the pill] and you can ask them what they saw."

Google says the science still has five to seven years before it becomes available to the public, but when it does, it could start a medical revolution, both with the ways illnesses are diagnosed and how they're treated.

But while many people are excited about the news, others are asking what this means for our privacy. Thanks to Google Maps, they're eerily omniscient on a global scale and because of their search engine they have a bird's eye view into all our thoughts. Google Wallet means they know our purchasing patterns and Gmail and Google+ means they know everything about our work and social lives. So do we really want Google knowing what we're doing on a cellular level?

I've watched several close family members die of cancer so personally I'm OK with trading in some privacy for the ability to detect disease earlier (can they also tell me why I can't lose these last 10 pounds while they're in there too??). Privacy experts say this is a mistake, that the information could be used in ways we never intended and could hurt us. All the same though I can't imagine anything that would hurt quite as much as watching a dear friend die of brain cancer.

Jamie Dornan gives more than lady boners in Fifty Shades

Why, you ask? Well, Jamie Dornan, who stars as the lead character Christian Grey, has just revealed that his penis will be a no-show. Speaking during an interview with The Guardian, the actor explained why there will be no full-frontal scenes in the film.

"You want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible without grossing them out," the British hunk told the publication. "You don't want to make something gratuitous, ugly and graphic.

"There were contracts in place that said that viewers wouldn't be seeing my, um…" Todger? (British slang for penis) The Guardian asked. "Yeah, my todger," Dornan replied with a laugh.

5 Things about Fifty Shades that probably left Charlie Hunnam reaching for Xanax

The publication went on to tell Dornan that he's nothing like Ewan McGregor, who is willing to show his man bits at every possible opportunity.

"Does he? Well, maybe Ewan has a more impressive girth," Dornan joked.

But we've seen Dornan's girth. And if you did have your hearts set on seeing the actor's junk, we've found a place where you, too, can see it. All you have to do is Google "visionaire jamie dornan" and you'll get pictures of Dornan's nude photo shoot. You're welcome.

But back to filming sex scenes: it's not quite as exciting as you may think.

"Anyone who thinks actors get turned on doing sex scenes in films is mistaken," Dornan explained to The Guardian. "There are dozens of hairy men standing around, moving cables and lighting equipment. That's not sexy unless you're into being watched, which I'm not."

Jamie Dornan dishes on his luck with the ladies

The star also told the publication that he knows not everyone is going to love him taking on the role of sadomasochistic, billionaire lover Christian Grey.

"I am never going to please all 100 million people who read the book," he says. "I'll be lucky if half that number are happy with me playing Christian Grey. I know there are campaigns of hate against me already."

Perhaps even more women will be disappointed with the choice now that there are no full-frontal scenes. Just kidding — we can't wait to see Dornan hit the big screen next Valentine's Day.

What Angie Harmon's recent restraining order had to do with her marriage

Rewind the calendar back to July when the Rizzoli & Isles star was granted a protective order against a transient woman who was threatening her family. TMZ noted the peculiarity of the restraining order because it only included Harmon and her three daughters and did not mention the former NFL player.

Angie Harmon's Rizzoli & Isles premieres

The couple often had a long-distance relationship since her TNT show shot in Los Angeles while Sehorn lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. Even with that distance, one could assume that Harmon would have wanted her husband protected in case the stalker harassed them while he was in town. The failure to add the athlete to the legal document makes us think the couple was already separated.

Harmon shared how difficult the schedule was on the family. She told Your Tango in a recent interview, "We don't get out Friday nights early enough to catch a flight home. So I'm here [in L.A.]. We sometimes meet in Texas, a 2-1/2-hour flight for both of us. I miss my kids, so it's hard, but my children are so understanding."

Who dumped who in the Chris Martin, Jennifer Lawrence split?

The cable star was also quite frank about marriage. She explained, "You have to be really considerate of each other, really kind to each other. It's a lot of work, really."

It seems that the two are trying to keep their separation amicable. Via their rep and People magazine, the couple said, "For the sake of their children, they ask for respect and privacy as they navigate this time in their lives."

The Mamafesto: The problem with princesses

$
0
0

At first glance, princess play may seem like a perfectly natural fit for young girls. But looking closer, it's not hard to see the potential problem with princesses. Many of the Disney princesses that we grew up with had storylines that devalued women. Ariel? She literally gave her voice up for a man. Sleeping Beauty and Snow White? They were both passive participants in their own stories, sleeping for most of them, only to be rescued at the end by a prince. And in fact, the notion of being saved instead of saving yourself is the standard for the traditional Disney princess: Any power they may have had has been stripped, and salvation rests in the hand of a man. This message has a lasting impact on our girls, especially as they are exposed to it at a very young age and for a good chunk of their childhood. And while these stories may have been written for a more general audience, for the last 20-plus years they have been aggressively marketed toward young girls, infiltrating every aspect of their lives.

What do these stories teach our daughters (and sons!) about the role of women in society? While young girls may not be theorizing on sexism and their place in the patriarchy, you can bet that they're still absorbing these messages on some level. And what about the notion of beauty? Princess culture pushes the hyper-feminine as the ideal, and with very few exceptions, focuses on white beauty as the ideal, leaving a whole lot of kids seeking princesses that look like them.

It's not as if princess culture is easy to escape. Take a look around at the toys, books, dress-up, TV and movies marketed toward young girls. It is a $4 billion/year industry saturated in princess culture. This wouldn't be that much of an issue if there were just as many alternative options to choose from, but princesses reign supreme. And despite a few outliers, they continue to promote negative stereotypes when it comes to gender, race, beauty, and more. And even those newer princesses that have a more promising story tend to fall prey to the dreaded Disneyfication process.

For parents who want to read more on princess culture and how harmful aspects of it truly are, check out Peggy Orenstein's groundbreaking book, Cinderella Ate My Daughter — an award-winning look at princess mania. For a practical, solutions-based outlook for dealing with princess culture, pick up Rebecca C. Hains's new book, The Princess Problem: Guiding Our Girls through the Princess-Obsessed Years.

Even better? Diversify your princess offerings! Nobody is saying they should cut princesses out of their kids' lives cold turkey, but media literacy (even at a young age!) never hurts. If your daughter can't get enough princess play, why not add some new twists to the usual Disney mix? Offer up ones that allow creativity to bloom, don't box girls and boys into stereotypical gender roles, and don't allow you to fall into the world of branding, marketing and consumerism that so often accompanies the more popular princesses. Some of my favorites include:

Is there a healthy balance between full-out princess invasion and banning them completely in your home?

Girls Season 4 teaser makes us dislike Marnie even more (VIDEO)

Things that first Girls Season 4 trailer should have covered

Last season left a lot of things open-ended and had us eagerly anticipating Girls Season 4. Would Hannah go to grad school? What was happening with Marnie and that folk musician? A new behind-the-scenes look at what's ahead answers all our leftover Season 3 questions and leaves us with one overwhelming feel: So much dislike for Marnie.

Who's your favorite Girl? Since Lena Dunham's coming-of-age HBO comedy found its way onto our screens, that question has plagued viewers. Much like the ladies of Sex and the City, every viewer relates to someone: Hannah, Jessa, Shosh or Marnie. Shoot, maybe you even spend most of the show recognizing how alike you and Adam are in your sexual preferences. There are plenty of girls out there who feel connected to Allison Williams' over-achieving, identity crisis-having Marnie. But, will that change during Season 4? After watching the new trailer, we think our feelings might change.

Girls - Invitation to the Set

Girls - Invitation to the Set

First things first: Marnie gets scandalous

It looks like Marnie will spend Season 4 chasing her folk-star dreams and banging her in-a-relationship musical partner. Sounds like something straight out of Behind the Music: The Civil Wars.

"Marnie and Desi are really making a go of it musically. They're gonna, like, try to be a 'thing.' To be a musical act together," Williams shares about her character's Season 4 journey. "And, yeah, it's an affair. He still has a girlfriend."

20 Perfectly relatable quotes from Girls

We're not the only ones not cool with Marnie and Desi's relationship. Alex Karpovsky says his character, Ray, is not at all cool with the situation.

"His feelings toward Desi are... they're pretty sharply critical," Karpovsky explains, unsurprisingly. "It feels like an upper-cut to him. It's messy and kind of unexpected."

Looks like we're also about to approach another season of feeling sorry for Ray. Will that dude ever catch a break? If the girls of Girls aren't going to treat him kindly, we will.

There's plenty more drama ahead on Girls Season 4

  1. We'll finally meet Shoshanna's (perfectly cast) parents. It turns out they hate each other, which could explain a lot about Shosh's personality quirks.
  2. Hannah will definitely go to Iowa, at least for a while.
  3. It sounds like her absence won't help things with Adam.
  4. Jessa will have a run-in with the cops and, apparently, continue to try her hand at pet ownership. Looks like she'll also get a reality check into just how worldly she really is compared to how she acts.
  5. The trailer also teases an onslaught of guest appearances. Our favorite: Zachary Quinto.

Reddit says: "Get a block of cheese. Whatever kind of cheese you like. Cut it into cubes and add it to the mac and cheese when you're adding the milk and butter. The cheese cubes will soften and partially melt, but remain as 'cheese bombs' within the pasta."

5. Cheese fries

Reddit says: "Fry up some French fries, and make your Mac and cheese real creamy and cheesy. Mix equal amounts of fries and Mac and cheese together. It is amazing; you get the crunch and crispness of the French fries, with the creamy cheesiness of the Mac. The fries just soak up all of the cheese sauce."

6. Corn

Reddit says: "The semi-crunchy texture of corn kernels is great with any noodle. The cheese is just a bonus. My family calls this 'yellow monster' whenever we make it."

Weeks before his fourth wedding, Charlie Sheen and fiancée call it quits

While the Anger Management actor's statement made it seem as though things were amicable between the pair and they mutually decided to part ways, it has since been revealed that the former porn star is taking the breakup very badly. And this weekend, things took a turn for the worse for Rossi.

According to RadarOnline, over the weekend, a close friend of Rossi's found her unresponsive at her home. She was then rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering an apparent overdose.

"It was an overdose," a source told the website. "It is not known what she overdosed on."

Jon Cryer airs his dirty laundry with Charlie Sheen

The source reports that Rossi had her stomach pumped and spent one night in the intensive care unit. She was later transferred out of ICU to regular care for another night of observation.

The outlet reports that although Rossi is "recovering well physically" she appears to be suffering from some emotional turmoil.

"It's been four or five weeks, but Brett is taking it very hard," the insider said of her breakup with Sheen. "She still has not gotten over the breakup."

Charlie's Sheen's fiancée changes her name and occupation

However, Sheen, who announced at the time of the breakup that he intended to focus on his children during this time, is apparently "very concerned" about his former fiancée and "is in communication with her," the source claims.

Let's hope that Rossi manages to deal with her demons and stay healthy in the future.

RIP Tom Magliozzi: My car and I will miss you, and here's why

Growing up in Los Angeles, I have never been without a car. At least from the time I was 16, I knew how to pump gas, pop a clutch and use jumper cables. These are essential survival skills for any Angelino.

The ladies' guide to stupid car problems

Currently, my Mazda RX-8 is my lifeline in a city that eschewed public transportation years ago in favor of smoggy air and horrible gridlock. Why interact with other human beings on a subway if you can have your own climate-controlled, private world? So what if it takes an hour to drive seven miles? My car has an awesome subwoofer.

Because I'm so car-dependent, I rely heavily on radio for news, entertainment and, well, as a friend in my lonely little car cockpit. NPR understands this and made a wise decision to take the show Car Talk national way back in 1987. If you're familiar with the show, it featured Tom and Ray Magliozzi, known as Click and Clack, taking questions from callers about their car issues.

4 Important tire-safety checks you are skipping

While it sounds like a ridiculously simple premise, it was genius. If you're like me, you don't have an auto mechanic in the family and there's always that little grinding sound, funny smell or overheating issue that doesn't seem like a big problem — until it is. And then you're screwed. Click and Clack provided an arena to deal with some of these issues and to help non-mechanically inclined gals like me understand what's going on under the hood.

Tom Magliozzi was 12 years older than his brother Ray and had a big laugh, making me feel like talking about cars could be fun — exciting, even. Their show felt very accessible to me and helped me understand my Mazda in new ways. I am going to miss their fatherly advice.

10 Things to teach your teen about car safety

From an Italian family in East Cambridge, Massachusetts, Tom had a near-fatal accident with a tractor-trailer as he was on his way to his engineering job, years before he was a radio host. The accident inspired Tom to examine his life, quit his job and seek out a more authentic lifestyle.

Magliozzi invented a do-it-yourself car repair shop and eventually made his way to radio as a car repair expert. Though the show stopped production two years ago, NPR continues to air older shows.

As I get ready to hit the 405, I'll be thinking of you, Tom Magliozzi.
