Elegant almond granita with strawberry and basil puree

$

0

My love for granita was born in Sicily, where my husband introduced me to his favorite summer breakfast of granita and brioche, which is a kind of fresh sweet bread eaten with the granita. I tried all the classic flavors, and I finally found my preferred one: almond. It is hard to replicate the ones I had on the island, but putting together some basic ingredients of ready-made almond milk and preparing my own syrup can take me back to my beautiful Sicilian summer breakfasts (and afternoon snacks or desserts) of almond granita. Adding some strawberry and basil puree makes it even more special, because the flavors go very well together. It's a refreshing experience you shouldn't miss.

Almond granita recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 3 cups unsweetened almond milk

Directions:

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, mix together the water and sugar, and cook until the sugar is completely melted. Let the syrup cool.
  2. When the syrup has reached room temperature, mix it very well with the almond milk.
  3. Transfer the granita mixture to a container (best shape is long and low, like a baking dish), and place it in the freezer. Every 30 minutes, mix the granita until it's ready to be served. This is to ensure it doesn't become one solid mass. If you don't mix it and it becomes one solid mass, don't worry. When you are ready to serve the granita, just break it into big chunks, and place the chunks into a blender to break everything up.

Strawberry and basil puree recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups strawberries, hulled
  • 3 tablespoons granulated white sugar
  • 6 large, fresh basil leaves

Directions:

  1. In a blender, blend together all the ingredients until very smooth.
  2. Refrigerate until it's ready to be served with the granita.

How to put a fun twist on pizza night: Crunchy pepperoni pizza taquitos

After a stressful day of endless errands and countless loads of laundry, dinner is the last thing on my mind. Yet I have a family to feed that is ravenous and starving.

What is a mom or dad to do?

This recipe for pepperoni pizza taquitos with ranch dipping sauce swooped in to the rescue. I'm a big proponent of ranch with my pizza, so I couldn't disappoint by leaving these taquitos without the same side. The best thing is that you can save these in a Ziploc bag for lunch the following day.

  • Very large

Overview

As the name suggests, the Tibetan Mastiff originated from the Himalayas where it worked to guard Tibetan villagers. First recorded in 1271 by Marco Polo, the breed may have even been around as early as 1100 B.C. and is considered the forefather of mountain and Mastiff breeds. An extremely large-sized dog with great strength, the Tibetan Mastiff makes for an excellent guard and family dog.

Breed standards

  • AKC group: Working Group
  • UKC group: Guardian Dog Group
  • Average lifespan: 13 - 15 years
  • Average size: 140 - 220 pounds
  • Coat appearance: Very thick and heavy double coat
  • Coloration: Black, brown, blue-gray, gold and sable. May have cream, white or red markings.
  • Hypoallergenic: No
  • Other identifiers: Large-sized dog with large bone structure; heavy, over-sized head that may present some wrinkling; strong muzzle; brown, deep-set eyes; pendant, V-shaped ears; cat-like feet; and feathered tail
  • Possible alterations: May have a silky or curly coat.

Is this breed right for you?

An extremely loyal breed, the Tibetan Mastiff will require good training techniques to understand who is the leader of the pack. If not provided with a strong and confident leader, the dog may growl and even bite if it does not understand its role or the rules of the household. Good with children, it makes for an extremely good guard dog that will stop at nothing to protect its family and home. With this in mind, it will need to be socialized with others to avoid problems when having visitors. Docile indoors, the Tibetan Mastiff is a very loud barker when left outside. Doing well in an apartment, it will still need to be walked daily with an experienced and strong owner to avoid any behavioral problems.

breed characteristics

A dream day-in-the-life

The Tibetan Mastiff is very relaxed when indoors with its family. Devoted, it is likely to spend the brunt of its time wherever its owner is in the home. Going in and out to keep guard on the house, you won't hear much from this big dog unless there is some type of disturbance. Satisfied with an evening walk, it'll enjoy a day filled with commandments and order.

Ikea: Clean and simple

This pure white closet is so squeaky clean it makes us think if we had it, our lives would be in perfect order as well. Recreate this look beginning with Ikea's large shelving unit ($200). Add simple white drawers ($25) for variety and hide-your-underwearability. Toss in these hangers ($5) and voila! Your closet, and quite possibly your life, is in perfect order.

Pops of personality

Ikea makes it easy to add a few flourishes to a simple closet, and it give some personality. They used two floral hanging storage units ($15) and matching boxes with lids ($20) to brighten this closet. Again, you can always choose to organize your closet using a large structure, but if you just need a little bit of extra space, these mesh baskets ($8) will do the trick.

This closet is the stuff of walk-in dreams. So much space you can have a comfortable chair just sitting on the side, no big deal! Ikea created this look using a large organizer ($259) as its base. Because there was so much extra wiggle room, they were able to add this white chest of drawers ($100) and a few rails ($10) to hold jewelry and scarves. The result is spectacular.

Prince William: Family is my silver lining after losing my mom >>

Will, Kate and Harry were joined by Belgian King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, U.S. Secretary of the Army John M. McHugh and the presidents of France, Germany and many other countries.

French President François Hollande used the occasion as an opportunity to talk about the current conflicts unfolding across the world.

"When in Gaza a murderous conflict has been going on for over a month… we cannot stay neutral, we have an obligation to act," Hollande said, according to the Wall Street Journal. "Europe has to take its responsibility to act, along with the U.N. We cannot simply invoke a cult of memory, we have to take our responsibilities."

Prince William, who has previously talked about the Ukraine/Russia conflictechoed those sentiments in his speech.

"The peace that we here enjoy together as allies and partners does not simply mean no more bloodshed — it means something deeper than that," William said, according to ABC News. "The fact that the presidents of Germany and Austria are here today, and that other nations — then enemies — are here too, bears testimony to the power of reconciliation.

"Not only is war between us unthinkable, but former adversaries have worked together for three generations to spread and entrench democracy, prosperity and the rule of law across Europe, and to promote our shared values around the world," he added. "The events in Ukraine testify to the fact that instability continues to stalk our continent."

Bizarre picture book teaches kids about open carry gun laws

Open carry video

Open carry video

I'm not against the second amendment. I grew up in a household with guns. Many of my family members have concealed weapons permits. My brother goes hunting and texts me photos of dead deer and I don't cry about it. On the other hand, I'm completely freaked out by the notion of open carry and bringing guns to restaurants, stores and recreational areas. Just last year, a disgruntled elderly gentleman shot and killed another man at the movies. Why? The guy was texting during the film. This kind of senseless gun violence simply wouldn't happen if guns weren't being carried in public places like movie theaters. I genuinely don't understand why untrained civilians can carry loaded weapons around me and my kids.My Parents Open Carry | Sheknows.com

But maybe I just need to be educated on safe, responsible gun ownership. That's where My Parents Open Carry could come in handy. This picture book from White Feather Press answers the sweeping call for pro-gun children's books. With 20 U.S. kids hospitalized each day for gun injuries, it's clear that children desperately need to learn that adults walking around with loaded firearms are totally safe. My Parents Open Carry tells the story of 13-year-old Brenna Strong, the super-creatively named teen who runs errands with her gun-toting, freedom-loving parents, Richard and Bea.

The book includes helpful information such as telling kids what an easy target is. "Someone that would be easy to rob," the My Parents Open Carry glossary explains. "For example an elderly person, a woman, a person that is preoccupied or one that appears unarmed and wouldn't cause much trouble during the crime." You heard that, ladies. You're all easy targets. Unless, of course, you're carrying a firearm in self-defense.

Right now, everyone who purchases My Parents Open Carry get a free copy of Raising Boys Feminists Will Hate!, a paperback that doesn't even pretend to be sane. "If metrosexual pop culture, feminized public schools and the effeminate branches of evanjellycalism lay their sissy hands on him, you can kiss his masculinity good-bye because they will morph him into a dandy," cautions the blurb for Raising Boys Feminists Will Hate! Sounds legit.

Now who's going to write a picture book explaining mass shootings to kids?

Will you be picking up My Parents Open Carry for your kids?

How to change a tire with a toddler

$
0
0

Let's say you're driving down the road doing the classic mom surveillance — glancing every two and a half seconds at your toddler in the backseat to make sure he hasn't managed to Houdini himself out of his restraints or, if he's sleeping, to make sure he's still breathing (I'm not the only parent who still does that, right?).

Then, you hear it... the dreaded "fwap-fwap-fwap-fwap." The telltale sound of a flat tire. In case you cruise into this fate in your near future, we've put together a short how-to for fixing a flat with a toddler in tow. So buckle up, baby... you're in for a bumpy ride.

1. First, you're going to want to put on your blinker and ease onto the side of the road. Because cars have now transitioned from inconsequential things you barely notice when you're driving to speeding projectiles of death hurtling toward you, you pull over as far as humanly possible without people wondering if you're actually trying to cross into the opposite lane of traffic. While doing so, you must maneuver around mile markers, guard rails and about a million whys from your inquisitive toddler.

2. Next, put on your emergency lights and promptly put in frantic calls to your husband, father, brother and that one incredibly resourceful girlfriend who could out-MacGyver MacGyver. Naturally, because this is a time-sensitive and entirely terrifying situation, no one picks up. Once you accept that you have to go it alone, grab the vehicle instruction manual out of the glove compartment. Flip through the designated tire-changing procedure, reassuring yourself that if you gave birth to a 9-pound baby without an epidural, you can surely kick this flat tire's ass.

3. Before getting out of the car, roll down the window nearest your toddler so you can maintain some semblance of eye contact. While cars and trucks traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour (or, you know, somewhere in that range) whiz by — nearly taking your blouse and resolve with them — locate the jack.

4. With the aforementioned jack in hand, check on your toddler, hastily pacify him with a handful of Goldfish and then crouch down to the deflated tire. Immediately curse (What? Your kid totally can't hear you over the passing traffic) upon realizing you forgot to lodge heavy objects in front of the tires. Scanning the roadside devoid of anything heavy besides your hopes, you peek into your car. Your toddler sees you, prompting a crying fit and desperate pleas to be picked up. Locate his sippy cup so you can get back to your thoughts. What the heck are you supposed to do? Wedge a carseat in front of the wheel? Make a mental note to keep a bag of rocks in the trunk of your car at all times.

5. Grab the spare tire before heading back to the flat tire. Position the jack correctly, say a prayer that your definition of "correctly" is, in fact, correct and raise the jack until it is supporting the car. Make another mental note to step up your upper body workout routine, 'cause any more resistance and your arms would literally turn into jelly.

6. Pick up the lug-nut-remover, making yet another mental note to actually learn the name of the tool you are about to use to loosen the lug nuts. A wrench? That sounds right. Using the wrench, begin turning the lug nuts counterclockwise to loosen them. Promptly realize those little suckers are latched on there tighter than a tick. Become distracted by your toddler, who has managed to pull the wipes out of his diaper bag and is now throwing them out of the window like rice at a wedding. Pry the package of wipes out of his hands, then scramble to pick up the discarded sheets.

7. Turn your attention back to the lug nuts. Put your body weight behind that wrench, girl. Finally, you feel the resistance break. Along with your kneecaps, perhaps, which you fear will forevermore bear the pebbly indentation of asphalt. With sweat now pouring down your face, raise the jack until the tire is off the ground, simultaneously freaking out your kid. As quickly as your jello arms and pebbly knees can muster, remove the flat tire and replace it with the spare. Tighten the lug nuts, lower the jack and start putting everything back, all the while singing "Old MacDonald" to keep your kid from dissolving into full-fledged hysterics. Pack everything back up and retreat back inside the safety of the front seat and the oddly comforting familiarity of your screaming child.

8. Or... you could skip all of this hassle and choose Bridgestone tires. Then, the next time you get a flat, simply drive (if your tire isn't too mangled) or have roadside assistance tow your car to the nearest Bridgestone, where they'll take care of it for you. You know, minus the hurtling death projectiles.

The fans certainly responded well to their photographed make-out session. One follower posted, "Perfect couple and beautiful example of marriage #neverstopmakingout," while another shared, "#perfectmrsbrady."

The couple, who has been married since 2009 and has two kids together, is currently apart because the football player is in pre-season training for the NFL. Bündchen is on vacation with her little ones while their dad is at work.

Their love has been smoldering for a long time, though. A look back at a few of the 34-year-old's Instagram photos shows that the duo hasn't stopped kissing since the day of their wedding.

In May 2014, the couple snapped a selfie on the way home from the Met Gala.

Who makes more: The cast of The Big Bang Theory or Modern Family?

Yikes! Production stalled while the gang worked out salary disputes >>

Phew! We were really worried they'd show up at the studio looking for a place to stay and ain't nobody got time for that.

So, just how much money are leads Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco making? The talented trio just secured a whopping $1 million per episode. That's three times what they made last year ($325,000 per episode). Just to break your heart a little more: If you're making the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, you'd need to work 137,931 hours (or a total of 40 hours a week for 66 years with no vacations) to make what the cast is making for one 30-minute television spot.

7 Shows you may not know are super popular in other countries >>

Are they worth it? That's debatable. From all the various award shows, The Big Bang Theory and its team of writers, producers, actors, etc. have collected 34 trophies. That's impressive, right? But what about a show like Modern Family, another show that had a cast recently go on hiatus during salary disputes? That family comedy has raked in 79 various wins. Modern Family's last reported cast salary? $175,000 per episode.

One interesting thing to keep in mind: In 2002, NBC bumped the cast of Friends' salaries to $1 million per episode in its final season. It's not that we want The Big Bang Theory to come to an end. We love those sexy nerds. We have to wonder, though: Just how long can the network float that kind of money to just one show? And what other shows and actors out there deserve more money? Modern Family continues to make us laugh while pushing social and entertainment boundaries. Why aren't they worth that same kind of money?

Congratulations to Cuoco, Galecki and Parsons. Expect your invites to our birthday party to come late next month and, yes, we want presents.

Cameron Diaz ends interview after Drew Barrymore snark >>

It's only been three months since Diaz was first spotted hanging out with the Good Charlotte guitarist/vocalist, however, it looks like things could be escalating quickly for the two. "It's early, but they have talked about marriage," an insider recently told People magazine.

Another source claims that Madden, who has romanced both Paris Hilton and Katy Perry in the past, has already taken the big step of spending time with Diaz's family. "It seemed important to Cameron that Benji met her family, and she looked very proud to introduce him to everyone," a witness told People of the couple's recent trip to Florida. "They were very sweet to each other, constantly kissing and flirting. It was obvious that they had a great vacation."

Yet another source says that the two Los Angeles-based artists spend every moment together that they can when they are in their hometown. "Benji spends so much time at Cameron's that it seems he now kind of lives there," the source said. "They look very happy together... Cameron hasn't looked this happy for years."

Diaz, 41, said in April that she is having a blast being in her 40s, which is perhaps what helped her find her new happy relationship with Madden, 35. "I love being in my 40s," the Sex Tape actress said to E! News. "You know yourself and you don't give a s*** anymore. You really don't care what other people think. You let go of things that don't matter... it's liberation. It's fantastic."

Diaz definitely has a thing for musicians. She's previously been linked to Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto and Robbie Williams.

All you need is a homemade crust, some juicy, fresh peaches and some booze. I mean, what's easier and more summery than that? Just be sure to pair it with a big glass of spiked tea.

Boozy peach pandowdy

Boozy peach pandowdy recipe

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • Dash salt
  • 4-6 tablespoons water
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 5 cups sliced peaches or nectarines
  • 2-1/2 tablespoons whiskey
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons apple pie spice
  • Egg whites
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon cinnamon sugar
  • Whipped cream

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the 2 flours, brown sugar and salt. Cut 6-1/2 tablespoons of butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse sand. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of apple pie spice. Sprinkle in the water (starting with 4 tablespoons) until the dough comes together. I needed about 6 tablespoons to make it come together.
  2. Place the dough onto a hard, floured surface, and knead it with your hands until soft. Roll it out to about 11 inches, and shape it into a disc. Wrap the dough with plastic wrap and wax paper, and chill it for about 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Mix together the peaches, white sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch and the remaining apple pie spice. Stir in the whiskey. Pour the mixture into a casserole baking dish.

Robert Downey, Jr. is Forbes' highest-paid actor for second year in a row >>

Bullock's film Gravity brought in more than $716 million worldwide and garnered seven Academy Awards. And even though the actress didn't win the statue for Best Actress, between June 2013 and June 2014, she jumped all the way from seventh place to the top spot on the Forbes list.

Coming in behind Bullock at No. 2 is Jennifer Lawrence, who is in the second-place spot for the second year in a row. JLaw earned an estimated $34 million in the last 12 months. Not bad for Lawrence, who earned less than $1 million for the first film of the Hunger Games series.

Jennifer Aniston is securely in the third spot, with $31 million.

"Thanks to Friends and her endorsement work for products like Aveeno, Aniston can be choosy about her film projects," said Forbes. "Lately she's focused on smaller-budgeted comedies like We're The Millers and Horrible Bosses. Aniston is usually willing to cut her upfront pay for these movies in return for a chunk of the profits. It's a strategy that's paying off."

Aniston's next film, Horrible Bosses 2, hits theaters in November.

Rounding out the top five are Gwyneth Paltrow with $19 million earned, and Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz, who tied for fifth place, earning $18 million each. Jolie was in the No. 1 spot in 2013 — earning $33 million — because her paycheck for Maleficent cleared in that 12-month period.

New BFF alert: Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock >>

The actresses made the list not only for earnings from their films, but also from endorsements, residuals and advertising.

Despite the high paychecks for these actresses, women in Hollywood continue to make less than the men. According to Forbes, the top 10 highest-earning actors brought in around $419 million combined, while the top 10 actresses on Forbes' list brought in only around $226 million.

Martin Scorsese has Kodak film's back

"We have many names for what we do — cinema, movies, motion pictures. And… film. We're called directors, but more often we're called filmmakers. Filmmakers. I'm not suggesting that we ignore the obvious: HD isn't coming, it's here," the 71-year-old moviemaker shared in a recent statement.

No luck for mega-duo Scorsese and DiCaprio >>

Referring to Kodak's decision not to halt production of film a "positive one," the director of The Wolf of Wall Street continued by admitting there's a lot to like about digital. He explained, "The advantages are numerous: The cameras are lighter, it's much easier to shoot at night, we have many more means at our disposal for altering and perfecting our images. And the cameras are more affordable; films really can be made now for very little money.

"Even those of us still shooting on film finish in HD, and our movies are projected in HD. So we could easily agree that the future is here, that film is cumbersome and imperfect and difficult to transport and prone to wear and decay, and that it's time to forget the past and say goodbye — really, that could be easily done. Too easily."

Top signs it's time to book a digital detox >>

Making an effort to relate the medium conversation to current times, Scorsese added, "Film is also an art form, and young people who are driven to make films should have access to the tools and materials that were the building blocks of that art form. Would anyone dream of telling young artists to throw away their paints and canvases because iPads are so much easier to carry? Of course not.

"In the history of motion pictures, only a minuscule percentage of the works comprising our art form was not shot on film," he continued. "Everything we do in HD is an effort to re-create the look of film. Film, even now, offers a richer visual palette than HD."

Closing his argument with a warning that going completely digital could mean disaster, the brilliant man behind the highly acclaimed Hugo went on to share, "We have to remember that film is still the best and only time-proven way to preserve movies. We have no assurance that digital information will last, but we know that film will, if properly stored and cared for."

Do you agree with Martin Scorsese, or is film soon to be just a thing of the past?

According to TMZ, the 28-year-old actress was just hit with a default notice on her Beverly Hills, California, mansion. She reportedly owes $100,000 in back mortgage payments. Since she has not paid a large amount on the home for some time, the bank has begun the foreclosure process.

Mischa Barton isn't in the mood for an O.C. reunion >>

Barton bought the house in 2005 for $6.4 million at the height of her fame. It's quite an impressive abode, featuring eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms and three guest houses on 1.2 acres of land.

She took out a $4.2 million mortgage on the property. After she was killed off her hit series in 2006 and her career slowed down, she tried to sell the house for $8.695 million in 2010. Barton didn't find a buyer the first time around, nor the second time, when she re-listed it in 2011.

Former O.C. actor slams young co-stars' bad attitudes >>

In 2012, she attempted to lease the mansion out for $35,000 a month, but that didn't entice anyone to jump at the property. At this point, the actress must work out an agreement with the bank or get current with her payments as soon as possible. If not, she faces losing the property in foreclosure.

In the past few years, Barton has been splitting her time between Los Angeles and a home in London. It is unclear whether she owns or rents her U.K. home.

The Sixth Sense star has multiple projects listed in pre and post-production on IMDb, but most of them are small-budget films. It's going to take a big contract to dig her out of her 90210 mess.

Seventeen-year-old Meghan Loma of Valparaiso, Indiana, told the Chicago Tribune that she was next to Malia and it was obvious who she was.

"All these Secret Service guys were around," she said. "My friend turned to me and said, 'I've seen the movie, and I know what they are.'"

The Obamas are from the Chicago area and still have a home there. Lomas said it was a highlight of the festival for her.

"I was in awe of her, and I was just staring at her for a while," she added. "I freaked out and I waved at her and said, 'Hi,' and she waved and said, 'Hi.' That was really cool. She seemed really nice and polite and stuff.

"Everyone was trying to get in to see her, but those Secret Service guys just formed a wall," she said.

Chance The Rapper is from the South Side of Chicago, the same area where the Obamas are from.

Sasha and Malia Obama: Fashion forward at the inauguration >>

Malia Obama has been keeping herself busy this summer. She also surprised another group by acting as a production assistant on the set of Halle Berry's show, Extant, back in June, and she seems to be figuring out what she wants to do — other than being her father's daughter. The 16-year-old is likely considering her college options, but she also seems to be having fun acting as a normal teen — even if she does it surrounded by the Secret Service.

Bendik, who was a prominent nightclub owner and managed venues on both the east and west coasts, was travelling for business with Tobin when he was found dead in a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, hotel room, according to TMZ. His body was discovered face down by a housekeeper a little after noon on Thursday, July 10. Authorities said their were no signs of foul play and no drug paraphernalia found at the scene.

Additionally, sources say that Bendik was not known for being a partier. "He was a hardworking business man, the nicest guy, very diligent, with such a vision," a source told Us Weekly around the time of Bendik's passing. "It is unbelievable. None of us knows what it could be. He was a guy that loved life and loved living."

The discovery of Bendik's body fell eerily close to the one-year anniversary of the death of Cory Monteith, an actor who was also a main character on Glee and was dating co-star, Lea Michele, at the time of his passing. Monteith, 31, was found dead on July 13, 2013, in a room at the Fairmont Pacific Room Hotel in Vancouver, the victim of "combined heroin and alcohol toxicity," according to the British Columbia coroner's office.

Although an autopsy was conducted on Bendik, 35, the cause of death still remains a mystery.
