New condom that kills HIV — too good to be true?

$

0

In the past condoms have been not only the best but the only way to decrease your risk of getting a sexually transmitted illness, but they've never been 100 percent effective. Estimates vary but the FDA found that depending on use and the type of disease, condoms are only 18 to 92 percent effective.

These new killer condoms developed by StarPharma and coated in Vivagel wiped out an amazing 99.9 percent of viruses in lab tests, including HIV, HPV and herpes.

Just like Vegemite, whale sharks and the other myriad of cool things that Australia has that the U.S. doesn't, the condoms will only be available in Australia for now. But the FDA is overseeing trials that could make them available in the U.S. eventually. StarPharma says there are no plans as of now to develop it into a stand-alone gel that could be used as a lubricant.

But it's not all sunshine and fear-free orgasms. Philip Werthman, M.D., a urologist and director of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine in Los Angeles, cautions that more research needs to be done, noting that the Australian studies only looked at 1,000 women total. In addition, in animal trials the gel only prevented transmission of viruses 85 to 99 percent of the time.

"That's great but is 85 percent good enough for something like HIV?" he says. "I wouldn't exactly tell someone to buy these condoms and do whatever you want."

Which leads to Werthman's main concern that people will hear the hype and believe it gives them 100 protection and forget about the other parts of safe sex. "Other than abstinence, nothing takes away all the risk," he says, pointing out that even if the gel works perfectly, condoms can break and viruses can live on places the condom doesn't cover like the base of the penis or the outer labia of the vagina. "Technology won't mitigate risky behavior and risky sexual behavior is still the strongest determinant of whether someone will get an STI."

Still, anything that makes condoms more effective sounds good. No word on if the gel will come in flavors. Vegemite, perhaps?

Yes To Carrots’ new coconut line: What you need to know

If you're like me, you adore the coconut scent. It's summery, sweet and sassy without being overwhelming, after all. So when Yes To Coconut's new line hit my desk, I was ready to dive right into the new releases.

Formulated specifically for dry skin, the natural collection combines nourishing moisturizers like hydrating coconut oil to help smooth dry and cracked skin. In typical Yes To style, there's something for everyone in this collection — everything from a lip oil and body balm to a conditioner and hand/cuticle cream. I could go on and on about the collection, but I'll save you some time and just give you a little sneak peek at some of the highlights.

One of my favorite items in the new line is the Coconut Naturally Smooth Lip Balm. Lip balm is a staple in every woman's purse, but some are extremely overpriced and ineffective. Luckily, this little baby is affordable ($3) and works overtime to moisturize dry lips. It's smooth, compact, light and totally tasty (cuz let's be honest ladies, that's the most important part). Even better, the effects are long lasting.

Moving on to skin care, we have the Coconut Cleansing Wipes. Like the rest of the collection, these wipes feature a fun coconut scent, but the appeal doesn't stop there. They're refreshing and non-sticky, and don't leave behind a residue like some other cleansing wipes — definitely a plus when you're wiping off so much in the sweaty summer months.

In addition to the beauty cabinet staples, the collection also features a few fun innovations like the Coconut Ultra Light Spray Body Lotion (we're loving it for its ease of application) and Coconut Eczema Relief Spray.

If hair care is more your thing, there's a shampoo, conditioner and hair smoother in the collection, too. Or, if you prefer to indulge your body in the shower, there's a luxurious (and delicious smelling) body scrub we've quickly fallen for and have been using to amp up our exfoliating game for the summer.

Intrigued? Head on over to Yes To's website to check out the rest of the collection and let us know what you'll be trying first.

Here's another reason to stop feeling guilty about your epidural

$

0

There are times in my life, like when I'm reading a beautiful all-natural birth story, that I feel a tad bit guilty for choosing an epidural for the birth of my third child.

But a new study out of China might just help alleviate a little of that guilt.

Anesthesia & Analgesia released new data that revealed epidurals might actually reduce the risk of postpartum depression.

Sweet relief in more ways than one?

The first-of-its-kind study looked at 214 patients and the 107 women who chose epidurals as their form of pain management during childbirth. Using a postpartum depression scale at both three days and six weeks after their babies' births, the researchers found that postpartum depression occurred in 14 percent of the women who received epidurals and in almost 35 percent of the women who didn't have an epidural. The statistics were enough for the researchers to conclude that epidural labor analgesia was, in fact, associated with a decreased risk of postpartum depression.

Many factors contribute to mom's mental health

While at first glance the results seem to point to epidurals as the clear-cut winner for pain control during labor, it's not so simple. The study found that breastfeeding and childbirth classes also contributed to lower rates of postpartum depression. Additionally, women who scored high on the three days postpartum scale were more likely to develop depression — suggesting a link between childbirth and postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression is a complex, multi-factor disorder — there isn't one single factor that any researcher can ever say with certainty causes depression.

Is it too good to be true?

Still, looking at the study I couldn't help but wonder — is there any truth to it? I struggled greatly with postpartum depression after the long and arduous natural birth of my first child, and even for a few months after the (again) natural birth of my second daughter. But when I chose to have my first-ever epidural with the birth of my third child, I have to admit that although my physical recovery wasn't a slam-dunk, mentally and emotionally I felt great. There's no telling if the difference had anything to do with my epidural or was due to the fact that I was more prepared as a mother and that the transition to adding another baby into our lives felt more natural than the first two times around.

So maybe there's some truth to the study, but it's still just one study. More importantly, it points to the fact that women need support during labor and childbirth. Although a completely "pain-free" birth might not be possible or even ideal, controlling pain during labor and birth is key. "Pain control gets the mother off to a good beginning rather than starting off defeated and exhausted," says Katherine Wisner, M.D., a Northwestern Medicine perinatal psychiatrist in the study's accompanying op-ed. "Whether it's vaginal or cesarean section delivery, pain control postpartum is an issue for all new mothers. There is no way to have a delivery without pain. The objective here is to avoid severe pain. Controlling that delivery pain so a woman can comfortably develop as a mother is something that makes a lot of sense."

So whether that's natural childbirth or an epidural, it comes down to supporting women to have the best birth they can have, because empowering women with knowledge and information are the best tools to help her stay in charge of her physical and mental health.

And as I prepare to give birth for the fourth time around in a few weeks, let's just say that I won't hesitate to choose an epidural if I need one.

Bindi Irwin at 14: Crocodile Hunter's girl grows up >>

Bindi, who will be 16 on July 24, said it has been a journey to find herself in the struggle of losing her dad in the public eye.

"I remember after we lost Dad, so many adults came up to me and said, 'Honey, time heals all wounds,'" she told People. "That is the biggest lie you will ever hear. It doesn't. That kind of sadness never goes away."

Irwin has found her mission now in continuing her father's legacy, and she does that by continuing the wildlife conservation efforts that her father was so passionate about. She still lives with her mother Terri Irwin and 10-year-old brother Robert in the home they shared with their father — which is on the grounds of their Australian zoo.

Bindi Irwin has not only used her name to film nature TV specials, but she also just signed on as a youth ambassador for SeaWorld. Her father's death has given her a path in life, and she is using her grief to help conservation efforts across the world.

"When you lose a loved one, you come to these crossroads. You can take the path that leads you down the aisle of sadness, or you can say, 'I'm never going to let this person's memory die,'" Bindi said. "'I'm going to make sure everything they worked for continues.'

Indian meal moth larvae

Indian meal moth larvae

Indian meal moth larvae

Although you may not have heard of them, Indian meal moth larvae are a lot more common than you may think. Brought in via an infested package, these insects are often found in the kitchen or pantry area. They feed on cereal, grain, pet food and more. Get rid of them with the use of moth traps and pesticide sprays or by calling your local exterminator.

Bees

bees

bees

Bees are a scary infestation, as many people are allergic to their stings. You are most likely to see such an infestation in the spring, although bees are known to be active through the summer and fall. The queen bee is responsible for choosing the nest location, build and construction with little to no help from the male colony. Once a nest is set up, other bees will swarm the area to protect the eggs and begin their work. The only way to rid yourself of a bee infestation is to remove the nest entirely. Since there are so many bees involved, it is best to leave the removal up to a professional extermination service.

German cockroaches

German cockroaches

German cockroaches

German and American cockroaches are the big, nasty insects that most people fear in their homes. They are extremely invasive and very hard to get rid of. Since their eggs are naturally protected from pesticides, it is very hard to rid your home from these creepy guys. As you would do for smaller roaches, contact a professional to help get cockroaches away from your house.

Ladybugs

Ladybugs

Ladybugs

Believe it or not, a ladybug infestation is more common than you may think. Because ladybugs migrate to warm places when it's cold, an infestation is most likely to happen in the winter. And because they release pheromones, once you get one ladybug in your house, you are likely to get a few dozen. They're extremely hard to get rid of until the spring, when they will naturally head back outside. The good news is that they won't do any harm to your home. However, if you want to get rid of them, you can either sweep them out or vacuum them, using a paper towel to block the hose, and release them outside where they belong. Close up any cracks or holes that may have let them inside in the first place.

Box elder bugs

Boxelder bugs

Boxelder bugs

Another nuisance form of infestation, box elder bugs do very little harm. However, if infested in multiples, they can be extremely annoying. Like the ladybug, these insects can be vacuumed up or swept up. You can also kill them by spraying them with a water and soap solution. You may want to avoid stomping on these bugs if you are inside, as they will leave a nasty yellow stain behind.

Bedbugs

Bedbugs

Bedbugs

Once you have bedbugs, it is very hard to rid yourself of them. The female lays hundreds of eggs — which are hardly seen by the naked eye — over her lifetime. Getting into your hair, skin and furniture, these annoying insects are transported by clothing, luggage and an infected person. You are likely to see signs of an infestation in the form of bites, blood stains on bedding, and shells and other disgusting remnants. Clean all of your bedding with hot water and replace any furniture or mattresses. Use an exterminator for further treatment.

Termites

Termites

Termites

Termites are the most threatening form of infestation to your home. Eating at your home's foundation, they are a silent killer that can do a lot of damage before you even know you've been infested. The most common signs that you have a problem are finding discarded wings in the corner of your home, seeing small swarms of winged insects or finding cracks in the paint. If you think you may have a problem, it is best to contact a professional service immediately.

Farmers market fresh veggie tofu scramble

Tofu can get a bad rap from time to time, and if you don't know how to properly prepare it, it can be a huge letdown when hunger strikes. I used silken tofu and lightly sautéed it with veggies, nutritional yeast and spices. If you aren't familiar with nutritional yeast, it's an excellent source of B vitamins, and it has a mildly sweet, nutty and cheesy flavor, making it a great cheese substitute in vegan sauces, pizzas or just as an overall seasoning when cooking.

Farmers market veggie tofu scramble recipe

This tofu scramble makes an excellent breakfast, brunch or even dinner.

Farmers market veggie tofu scramble recipe

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon organic coconut oil, melted (or cold-pressed olive oil)
  • 1 (14 ounce) package soft or silken tofu, drained
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 zucchini, diced
  • 1 yellow squash, diced
  • 1/2 sweet onion, sliced thin
  • 2 cups fresh baby spinach
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved

Directions:

  1. Heat a large pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the coconut oil and the tofu. Using a spatula, break up the tofu so that it crumbles. Sauté the tofu, and stir continuously for about 5 minutes until it starts to lightly brown.
  3. Add in the nutritional yeast, water and garlic powder, and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Once all the liquid has evaporated, transfer the cooked tofu to a bowl, and set it aside.
  5. In the same pan, add the zucchini, squash and onions. Lightly cook until the vegetables have softened, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  6. Add in the spinach, tomatoes and cooked tofu.
  7. Cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes, transfer to a serving platter, and serve warm.

Tip: Try using leftovers in tortillas to make breakfast burritos.

A speeding ticket has been the best thing to happen to me all summer

Highway patrolman writing ticket

As I drove down the four-lane, divided highway in South Dakota, I didn't see the highway patrol car coming toward me across the median. I didn't see it make a U-turn to come up behind me. It wasn't until he was right in my rear-view mirror that I saw the discreet lights flashing on his dashboard. By the way, what happened to the tell-tale roof-mounted light bars? I digress.

The officer was polite the entire time. He had a practiced, patient smile on his face when he told me that you cannot exceed the speed limit, not even to pass a slower vehicle. I have to admit that I incorrectly believed you could accelerate in the passing lane in order to pass a slower car in the right lane. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong. My plan was to resume the speed limit once I passed and got back into the right lane. He said it was not lawful even in big cities, like in California, where he previously worked. The smile stayed as he told me that he was tired of witnessing the average of one fatality per month on this stretch of highway, due to someone speeding. He spoke of the higher speed limit on that stretch of highway, one of the highest in the country. And still we speed.

I have since learned that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in the first nine months of 2013, 24,270 people died in traffic crashes. These were highway deaths.

The economic impact is great, as well. According to a study, "crashes involving a speeding vehicle traveling over the posted speed limit or too fast for conditions accounted for 21 percent of the total economic loss and cost the nation $59 billion in 2010, an average cost of $191 for every person in the U.S. Including lost quality of life, these crashes were responsible for $210 billion or 24 percent of the overall societal harm caused by motor vehicle crashes." Wow. Not to mention families missing loved ones and businesses missing employees.

When the officer printed my ticket and handed it to me in the front seat of his vehicle, I remember feeling sheepish when I said "Thank you. Thank you for the ticket." Then I said, "I know it was for my own good." How many times have we silently (or not so silently) cursed officers with their radar guns pointed towards us while zooming down the highway? How many times have we said, why don't they go fight real crimes? We accuse them of issuing speeding tickets just for the revenue in order to meet some silly, greedy quota.

I have driven a few hundred miles since then. I do not exceed the speed limit, not even to pass. Not even locally, on the highways in my town. I still see his face; his profile, his polite, frozen smile as he patiently explained it to me. I think of that officer, and countless others, having to come to the scene of a speeding accident and see dead bodies and mangled survivors. An event called an "accident" that is completely preventable.

I still thank him for the wake-up call before tragic consequences could occur. In my business (as a safety speaker) I get called upon to educate about safety, often after the fact, once there has already been a tragedy. How nice to learn a lesson beforehand. Slow down and plan accordingly.

Tara Reid warns Sharknado could really happen

Tara Reid's wild theory on whale shark sexy time >>

"You know, it actually can happen," Reid told GQ magazine. "I mean, the chances of it happening are very rare, but it can happen actually."

The interview, which seems as far-fetched as the movie itself, has Reid talking about the possibilities of a real-life sharknado.

"Which is crazy. Not that it — the chances of it are, like, you know, it's like probably 'pigs could fly,'" she said. "Like, I don't think pigs could fly, but actually sharks could be stuck in tornadoes.

"There could be a sharknado," she added.

In the film, sharks were not only flying through the storms but also did more unrealistic things like climbing ropes with their teeth.

Sharknado 2 has upped the franchise's star power, adding actors Vivica A. Fox, Mark McGrath and 30 Rock's Judah Friedlander, among others. Costar Ian Ziering, who is returning for the sequel, did what he could to bring the interview back to reality, and made a joke of Reid's comments. He added, "The most terrifying tornado would be probably be full of lawyers."

But Ziering did offer advice on how to prepare for a sharknado, in case you are ever faced with one.

Comic-Con 2014: 24 movie still has "potential"

Review: What was Jack's final sacrifice? >>

The show's executive producer, Jon Cassar, said a movie is always still a possibility.

"We're still talking about the movie; it's still potentially out there," he told fans.

Both Sutherland and Cassar also noted that the show's newest "ending" was purposely left open for interpretation or additional story. Sutherland, especially, talked of his emotional attachment to the character and the show, even going so far as to say the ending was a "cop out" because it was just too hard to let go.

"It's hard to end it," expounded Cassar. "We came – ourselves, as people who are making the show – came full-face with that. Trying to create the end of the show this season, because we had said this was the last season, was really difficult for us. All of us individually didn't want to let it go; we fought against it, we fought for it."

Cassar went on to thank the fans.

"Your response to the end of this season was really gracious and kind," he said. "So thank you very much."

Notice anything about that statement? If you're like the rabid fans who were at the panel, you no doubt noticed Cassar saying the end of the season, not the end of the show. So, will 24 live to see yet another day? No official announcement has been made at this time, but earlier this month NBC did mention they were open to the possibility. Keep your fingers crossed, Bauer fans.

5 Reasons the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer killed our lady boner

1) Don't want to see Dakota Johnson naked

The daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, Dakota most certainly inherited acting genes and good looks. But in the trailer, her Holly Hobbie blouse and schoolgirl skirt make her look incredibly mousy. We understand that Anastasia is supposed to be a woman repressing her sexual desire, but she seems terrified of Christian, as opposed to being curious about getting to know him better. Dakota Johnson looks more like our kid sis than a woman on the verge of a sexual awakening.

We were so elated, even instantly aroused when we first heard the Sons of Anarchy bad boy was going to play Christian Grey. We fantasized about Hunnam without his scruffy beard and leather jacket, all spiffed up in his tailored Armani suit and tie and looking sharp. But when the Brit backed out, we really questioned whether or not Jamie Dornan could fill his pricey Berluti dress shoes. From watching the trailer, we're not optimistic.

Charlie Hunnam still regrets quitting Fifty Shades of Grey>>

3) Jamie Dornan comes off as a cardboard cutout of Christian Grey

Dornan is hot and we appreciate the tease of his bare, slip and slide chest, but there doesn't seem to be much going on behind the scowl. In fact, the trailer comes off more like a perfume ad that's made for a wide television audience.

4) Where's the kink?

OK, we see Mr. Grey take out a blindfold, which is pretty tame, if you ask us. Then there's a super-quick shot of a leather flyswatter and the red silk restraints, but the objects aren't what we're interested in. S&M is more about taking on the role of a dominant or submissive and it's all about either feeling in control or giving up control — that's what's sexy to us. We don't get any real sense of these desires from the trailer.

5) Sometimes books are better left as books

Not all novels are destined to be great films because the concepts don't always transfer from the page to the big screen. Erotica is to be read alone and to live in one's imagination. One of the reasons the book was so popular was that a woman could read it on her Kindle at the PTA meeting and no one would ever know she was reading about sexy spankings. Will Fifty Shades make a lot of money? Certainly. Will it be as orgasmic as the book? We're guessing not.

Marcus Grodd found love in paradise: He's engaged

Why? Well, Bachelorette alum Grodd has found love with someone else, and that someone else is Lacy Faddoul.

Danica McKellar is engaged to boyfriend Scott Sveslosky >>

The happy couple met on the show Bachelor in Paradise, which was filmed in June, and they have already decided to take their relationship to the next level and become engaged. In fact, Grodd and Faddoul decided to get engaged on the show, Us Weekly reports.

This confirms reports from Bachelor maven Reality Steve who previously claimed that the pair would get engaged during the show.

We're so happy for sports medicine manager Grodd, because he truly appears to wear his heart on his sleeve and he fell hopelessly in love with Dorfman (he was the first to tell her he loved her) during Season 10 of The Bachelorette.

"Andi is my soul mate. I feel that with her," he gushed while on the show. "I'm ready to propose to her."

Listen up, men: Sheryl Crow would love to be married >>

Well, Grodd appears to have gotten over Dorfman quickly and discovered that there are plenty more fish in the sea, and he's certainly has got a fine catch now.

While many have been rooting for Grodd on Season 10 of The Bachelorette, few have heard of his lady. Faddoul's claim to fame is from Juan Pablo Galavis' season of The Bachelor, although she was among the first contestants to be eliminated after the first cocktail party.

Bachelor in Paradise premieres on Monday, Aug. 4, at 8/7c on ABC.

Congratulations to the happy couple on the news of their engagement.

In the video, the House of Lies star has to quit her job as a nanny for the Banks family because she can't support herself on $7.25 per hour. Bell sings a parody of "A Spoonful of Sugar" to explain to her two kid clients why she supports raising the federal minimum wage.

She sings, "In every job that must be done, you must be paid in more than fun."

Millions of Americans live below the poverty line, many of the them domestic employees like Mary Poppins. Bell explains in the song that "just a $3 increase can make a living wage."

Of course, there is a dig at the Republican party, which doesn't support the increase. In the song, the actress says, "Are you a Republican? I do love a good Tea Party!"

The Veronica Mars star does bear a close resemblance to the woman who made the role famous, Julie Andrews. The legendary star won an Oscar in 1965 for her portrayal of everyone's favorite babysitter.

Bell isn't doing too badly in the Disney department either. The pregnant actress voiced Anna in Disney's monster hit Frozen. She has also been vocal about wanting to star in the Broadway version of the movie that the company is developing. She's now in rehearsal for a production of Hair at the Hollywood Bowl in early August.
