5 BS facts about saving money that everyone thinks are true

$
0
0

A recent Gallup poll found that most Americans would rather save money than spend it (62 percent vs. 34 percent), but they’re not actually doing it. In fact, savings rates have dropped to an all-time low in nearly 10 years. Is this due to the state of the economy? Or perhaps it’s because we live in a consumer-driven society where we must "spend, spend, spend" in order to keep up with the Joneses. Whatever the case may be, most Americans simply are not saving money. And if they are, they may not understand the best ways to do so. Here, we’re uncovering five facts about saving money that are total BS.

BS Fact #1: My home is a good investment

While many believe owning a piece of real estate is a good investment, this is unfortunately not the case. Many Americans wrongly believe that the value of their homes will increase over time above the rate of inflation. Homes may get too old to maintain, they may go out of style and there will always be something new and improved. Sev Meneshian, CFP, and president of Public Retirement Planners, states that a "house is a consumer item unless it produces adequate income to cover the expenses or you bought it to flip." A home is a place to live and store your stuff, not a means of making money.

BS Fact #2: It’s a good idea to pay off your mortgage early

Seems to make sense, right? While being debt-free is the way to go, that’s not always the case when it comes to a home mortgage. Interest rates are low, and it may be more worthwhile to invest your money in something other than your mortgage. "Paying back debt over a long period of time (10+) with an income produced by another asset (for example, rental real estate) is good because the income-producing asset can appreciate, and you can pay back debt with depreciating dollars," Sev adds.

BS Fact #3: Cold hard cash is the way to go

Some people falsely believe that their money is only safe if it’s in the form of cash. Ashley Feinstein, CPC, of Knowing Your Worth, explains that "many banks and brokerage companies are FDIC insured, which means your money and investments are insured up to $250,000." Ashley believes "having a lot of cash in your home can be risky. If you are robbed or there is a fire, there is no way to get that money back." We couldn’t agree more — store your money at a trusted, FDIC-insured bank instead of under your mattress.

BS Fact #4: Keep all your savings in a savings account

While you don’t want cold hard cash lying around, a savings account is only good for money you may need short-term (think emergency fund). Depending on your income and short-term financial needs, you’ll want to keep three to six months’ income in a savings account. This allows you penalty-free access to your money if and when you need it.

CEO and finance expert Elle Kaplan of LexION Capital Management, the only 100 percent woman-owned asset management firm in the U.S., recommends investing in a diversified global portfolio. "That money can grow steadily over time," she states. "Once you have an emergency fund of living expenses set aside, it’s time to invest. If you have at least a three- to five-year time horizon, then your money should be invested so that it can be working just as hard for you as you did to earn it," Elle advises.

BS Fact #5: I can’t afford to save money

We’ve all been there at some point in time. "If only I made more money, then I’d be able to save," we think. Turns out, this is the biggest lie about saving money that many Americans believe. There’s always — always — a way to save. Ditch cable and subscribe to Netflix and put the difference in savings, have $25 per paycheck automatically go into your savings account, start using coupons and save the money you saved on food. Other creative ideas include using cash and keeping the change, getting a part-time job on the side or even selling a few of your unused items on Craigslist.

Selena Gomez, Cara Delevingne splash it up in Saint-Tropez

Gomez has been in Europe for the last few days making fashionable appearances at the Ischia Global Festival in Italy. The brunette pop star then went to France for some fun in the sun with girl pal Delevingne as the pair boarded a luxury yacht to go for a Mediterranean sea swim.

Selena Gomez was not pregnant in 2012 >>

Decked out in a tight white one-piece bathing suit, Gomez looked stunning while unwinding with her model friend. No stranger to hot headlines herself, Delevingne is known for dating girls, so this may raise fan questions as to the girls' relationship.

However, Gomez is strictly a boy-dater and even though Delevingne's ex, Michelle Rodriguez, was recently seen locking lips with Zac Efron on another yacht, the two ladies are most likely just good old friends having a fun girls' day out. The "Love You Like a Love Song" singer and the Victoria's Secret model enjoyed swimming in the waves and playfully splashed each other before climbing back onto the yacht for some continued onboard fun.

Orlando Bloom, Selena Gomez spark romance rumors >>

Meanwhile, Gomez's supposed on-again boyfriend, Justin Bieber, is back in LA where he's said to be parading around in a marijuana print hat and, as usual, without a shirt on. He has also been hiking with friends and continues to have loud parties at his new luxury condo, which cops have been called to numerous times already.

Sources told TMZ if his behavior continues, the Biebs could earn himself a probation violation and possibly land behind bars if he's not careful.

Haters thin-shamed Candace Cameron Bure and this is how she responded

Candace Cameron Bure found this out the hard way when she posted on Facebook about her 5-day cleanse and was inundated with comments telling her she is already too skinny, shouldn't be trying to lose weight and should just "eat a steak" already. Hundreds of people weighed in with their opinions on her food, her body and even her sanity.

Cleanse

Cleanse

Debate: Is thin-shaming just as bad as fat-shaming? >>

I think this says less about her and a lot more about us and how controversial food — yes, food — has become. Cameron's post has over 7,000 likes; compare that to CNN's most recent update on Gaza with a mere 2,137. The point is that we'd rather discuss someone's diet than their religion, their politics or even their clothing.

Cameron posted a response later that day saying she wasn't doing the cleanse to lose weight but rather to rid her body of toxins and get back on track after a "very indulgent" week in Napa. (Sounds fun to me.)

Candace response

Candace response

She wrote, "Since being off Dancing With The Stars, my body has struggled to find its balance after having danced up to 8 hours a day and eating so clean. After going back to my normal eating habits as well as extended over indulgent summertime vacation eating and normal exercise routine, my body has endured some confusion causing some minor health issues. That is private, so I will not be going into detail, but this cleanse is just a step to getting it back on track because I know that food is a key source to healthy living."

It's not only celebs that get criticized for their diets and we can all learn something from her about how to respond to the haters.

1. Educate them

Often people react without knowing what "vegan" or "paleo" is much less why you choose to eat that way. You don't owe anyone an explanation but it doesn't hurt to give a couple of sentences explaining how it helps you feel healthier.

2. Set boundaries

In the post she says she won't discuss her private health problems and then adds at the end that she won't be responding to any more comments criticizing her cleanse. It's totally OK to tell people what you're comfortable with discussing.

3. Don't apologize

You eat the way you eat because presumably you put a lot of thought into what you are doing and you don't need to apologize for doing what feels best for your body.

4. Don't become a diet pusher

It's a natural response to people pushing food on you to want to push your diet on them but resist that urge. If they're interested, they will ask questions and if not at least things won't be awkward the next time you see each other.

5. Use humor

Candace didn't really crack any jokes (Come on, DJ Tanner. I know you have it in you!) but one of the best ways to diffuse a situation is to make a joke. Plus, we could all stand to take ourselves a little less seriously.

No more babies for Jessica Simpson, two is fine for now

The newly-married star made her revelation via Instagram on Sunday, July 20, when she posted a picture of an adorable baby boy and herself bare-faced, but looking beautiful, as she snuggled up to him. The Blonde Ambition actress and singer captioned the photo, "I love you Jack, but I do not want another!!"

Fans may be disappointed to learn that the "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" singer won't be having any more children with her former NFL journeyman hubby, Eric Johnson, any time soon — not all that surprising, though, since she must be enjoying her amazing svelte figure — because, for now, the pair is content with their two tiny tots, daughter Maxwell Drew, 2, and son Ace, 13 months (she gave birth twice in the past two years).

Simpson has a $3 million deal with Weight Watchers as a celebrity spokesperson, so it's not surprising that she's concentrating on her hot new figure for now.

That said, the mom of two is clearly loving motherhood, "With two kids, we have our hands full, but every day is a new adventure," Simpson previously revealed to Us Weekly. "It's fun! I feel very at peace with being a mom."

Simpson has been very active via social media lately, and she also chose to share pictures of her tiny tots with her appreciative fans. The beauty even shared a pic of the two with the caption, "There is no way these kids could be more adorable. OMG! So happy to be home snuggling!!" How cute!

Shania Twain ends Vegas residency, headed to DWTS?

She said in a statement, "At the beginning of this amazing journey, through the rediscovery for my love of performing, I knew the stage would feel like home, but it turned out that Las Vegas itself became 'home.'"

Shania Twain talks Vegas, new music and her beauty secrets >>

The "From This Moment On" singer continued, "Performing for fans who come from all over the world to see the show night-after-night warms my heart. I started the first international Shania Kids Can clubhouse in Las Vegas because I love this city, and my time here has given me more than anyone can ever know. I can't thank Las Vegas enough."

Twain began her residency of Shania: Still the One back in December 2012. When she finishes up her concert series on Dec. 13, she will have performed 100 shows at the venue.

The timing of the announcement is curious, though, because rumors have been circulating in Hollywood that the Grammy winner is headed to Season 19 of Dancing With the Stars. She has a handful of dates left in October and the first half of December, which will add up to 16 more shows.

That schedule would not conflict with ABC's Monday night dance competition show and she can easily rehearse on the road with her partner.

DWTS pro Cheryl Burke is skinny-shamed on Facebook >>

According to HollywoodLife.com, it looks like Twain will be a cast member in the fall.

A source told the gossip site, "Those at DWTS are very confident that Shania Twain will join the show in its next season. She is very, very, very close to signing on the show."

The mom of one was also asked in a recent Facebook chat if she would be interested in doing the show. She responded with a non-committal, "I'd consider it!" However, the rumor mill is churning that she's onboard for the fall season.

DWTS begins airing on Sept. 15 on ABC.

Philip Seymour Hoffman didn't believe in trust fund kids

Philip Seymour Hoffman won't be CGI'd into Hunger Games >>

According to the newspaper, Hoffman's estate was worth around $35 million when he died, but he hadn't updated his will since October 2004.

Mimi O'Donnell was Hoffman's girlfriend and mother of all three of his children. Ten-year-old Cooper, 7-year-old Tallulah and 5-year-old Willa were not given any of the estate, which was willed entirely to their mother. Hoffman trusted O'Donnell to be in charge of the money allotted to their children.

Cooper was named as the backup in case O'Donnell was no longer around.

The information obtained by the NY Post was from an interview conducted with Hoffman's accountant, who said the actor was confident that O'Donnell would take care of their children but "summarily rejected" the idea of setting up a trust fund for his children.

It was previously revealed that Hoffman had asked that his children be raised in one of three cities (but not Los Angeles).

Celebrity deaths of 2014 >>

Hoffman's sentiments aren't that rare among stars these days. Back in June, singer Sting also told the Daily Mail that he has the same outlook for his children.

"I told them there won’t be much money left because we are spending it," Sting said, according to the LA Times. "They have to work. All my kids know that and they rarely ask me for anything, which I really respect and appreciate."

Overview

The oldest-known terrier, the Manchester Terrier was bred in England to hunt rats. The best vermin-hunting breed, the Manchester Terrier is extremely fast. Available in both standard and toy varieties, both are considered companion dogs with the same personality traits. Unfortunately, the popularity of the Manchester Terrier has gone down in recent years.

Is this breed right for you?

A completely devoted breed, the Manchester Terrier is very loyal, loving and faithful. Active and full of life, it needs a lot of mental and physical stimulation to avoid behavioral problems. Not capable of being left alone for long periods of time, it is in constant need of human companionship. With a natural instinct to hunt, it does not do well with cats but can get along with other dogs if raised with them. Enjoying walks, games of fetch and other forms of activity, it does best with a large yard. A good family pet, it does best with children if introduced to them as a puppy.

A dream day-in-the-life of a Manchester Terrier

A breed that enjoys snuggling with its favorite humans, it will enjoy waking up to the alarm in its owner's bed. Known for cuddling, it will wait to get out of bed until its master does. Once up for the day, it'll greet the kids with affection before going for a romp in the yard. After a good breakfast, it will enjoy engaging in a game of fetch. After a nap with the smaller humans, the Manchester Terrier will follow them outside to sniff out the perimeter for any unwelcome visitors. Ending its day exactly as it started, it'll be keen for a nightly snuggle session.

Switched at Birth review: Life goes on for some, but it sucks

In the last episode, Switched at Birth did almost too good of a job at depicting what life was like for a family dealing with a death. In this episode, they again did almost too good of a job — this time at depicting what life is like during the aftermath.

Missed last week's episode of Switched at Birth? Here's our review >>

Not all Sorrentos are the same

I really felt for Bay, going all the way to Chicago to tell a cousin she'd never met that Angelo was dead. At first, I started to feel bad for the cousin, too, thinking how awful it would be to get such news out of the blue. That was of course before I knew the guy was a jerk. I can't believe he tried to bilk his own family out of money. I know Angelo was probably a different person before he came into the family's life, but I doubt his memory deserved that kind of treatment. About the only good thing that Sebastian did was to warn Bay that aneurisms might run in her blood, which was definitely not the kind of news she needed to hear.

Daphne's frightening rebellion

I could feel that things were going to get bad when Daphne went off on Regina at the end of the last episode, but I was not prepared for the lengths she went to in her rebellion. I could understand her anger and even her need to find something to numb the pain, but doing cocaine was beyond insane. I know she told Bay that she was fine and that she stopped feeling it, but I can't help but to worry that everything we saw in this episode was just the beginning. I don't know how far she'll go, but after what she did in Chicago, I can't say I'd put anything past her now.

The story with Kathryn, Leo and Renzo was incredibly sweet. I thought it was great of her to try and fix Leo up with someone new. I mean her heart was in the right place, even if it turned into a total disaster. In the end, what Leo really needed was a family and I'm excited by the prospect of having both him and Abby around more often. With the loss of Angelo, it feels right for them to open their hearts to extended family and they all do need each other right now.

Drunk Tank

I know the basis of his story was sad, but Drunk Tank was mostly hilarious to watch. It was funny when Emmett and Mary Beth had to pretend to be a couple for him, but I was glad the truth eventually came out. His reaction wasn't a surprise, though I was glad no one got hurt. Toby's life suddenly got more interesting. Now he's got Tank as a roommate and Lily (aka Miss Summers) living upstairs. Was it just me or were there some possible sparks between Toby and Lily?

Overall, this episode truthfully showed the ups and downs that come with moving on after a family member's death. Some people move on to better things while others go in scary directions.

5 Switched at Birth finale questions to ponder until summer >>

My favorite bits:

Toby telling his dad that his new gig paid in creative fulfillment, not so much in cash.

Completely tearing up and Kathryn pointing out that Abby had lost two dads.

Renzo's reaction to seeing Leo's photo. I love that Kathryn decided to play matchmaker.

Emmett pretending to be Mary Beth's boyfriend for Tank's sake. Awkward.

Daphne on coke. So, so scary.

Literally laughing out loud when Renzo said, "I spilled the beans!" after he, you know, spilled the beans.

Leo: "I just don't need a boyfriend right now."
Kathryn: "Well, if you need a family you've got one right here."

Lily: "Did that drunken pile of desperation just hit on me?"

Daphne admitting she got high and asking her mother what she was going to do about it. Ouch.

Bay: "I went all the way there to find a Sorrento, and I have one right here."

Bay playing with Abby. So many tears.

What did you think of this episode of Switched at Birth? Were you shocked by Daphne's behavior?

New BFF alert: Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock

The two new pals bonded over dinner at a get-together in Gwyneth Paltrow's home a while ago, Us Weekly claimed. "Jen and Sandra are new BFFs. They're very excited about the new friendship," an insider told the publication.

Sandra Bullock's commencement speech advice is awesome >>

Aniston and Bullock apparently have lots in common and talked about things such as their bad divorces and mutual ex-boyfriends. Both actresses had actually been engaged in the past to Joshua Donovan, and both broke things off with him before either said "I do."

"Sandra and Jen have a lot in common and enjoy each other's company," the source continued. "They have been having each other over for dinner regularly."

The Friends alum and Gravity star do have some differences in their lives, however. Aniston has finally found the love of her life in Justin Theroux, who she's been happily dating for some time. Bullock has remained famously single since her very public divorce from Jesse James some years ago.

Jennifer Aniston: Happiness is a choice >>

However, the Virginia native has found happiness in adopting a baby boy, Louis, soon after her divorce, and the two are often seen out and about enjoying the town together.

While Aniston and Bullock are friends offscreen, the pair have yet to star in a movie together. That might change in the future, though, as there are several rumors floating around that the two new friends may star with fellow actress Cameron Diaz in the ultimate chick flick extravaganza.

No official word has been released on such a film yet, but if it does happen, it will definitely be a flick worth checking out.

Parents of children killed on flight MH17 release heartbreaking statement

Maslin Family Statement

An unspeakable loss

Children Mo, 12, Evie, 10 and Otis, 8, perished along with their grandfather, Nick, when flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine. Their parents are left in what they describe as a living hell. When I began following the tragedy the day it unfolded, my mind turned immediately to thoughts of revenge. Those responsible should be killed — they should pay for what they did. So many lives were lost from what appears to be a disgusting act of terrorism.

But today, Perth couple Anthony Maslin and Marite Norris remind us that the actions taken against passenger flight MH17 were born of hate. Can we afford to cultivate more hatred?

A statement of love

"We live in a hell beyond hell. Our babies are not here with us — we need to live with this act of horror, every day and every moment for the rest of our lives," the parents' statement reads.

"No one deserves what we are going through. Not even the people who shot our whole family out of the sky."

The parents go on to affirm their love for their family in these beautiful words:

"No hate in the world is as strong as the love we have for our children, for Mo, for Evie, for Otis. No hate in the world is as strong as the love we have for Grandad Nick. No hate in the world is as strong as the love we have for each other. This is a revelation that gives us some comfort. We would ask everyone to remember this when you are making any decisions that affect us and the other victims of this horror."

The Maslin family has requested privacy as they process their grief. I hope that in the memory of this beautiful family those of us who were touched by the parents' grace can find ways — every day — to choose love over hatred.

Goat and chair

All Dynamo the goat wants in life is to curl up on a purple inflatable chair and take a nice nap in the sun, but the dang chair just won't let it.

As over 375,000 YouTube viewers have discovered, Dynamo and this run-of-the-mill blow-up chair simply don't get along. No matter what Dynamo does, it can't seem to tame the chair, and its efforts soon turn comical.

Wool active wear: The new way to sweat less during your workout

Vie Active co-founders Noa and Bryan Ries help explain.

"[Merino wool is] natural, super soft, breathable, temperature regulating (keeping you cool when it's super hot out and warm when it's cold), odor resistant and anti-microbial. Once you work out in Merino and see that you can literally wear the same top all day (even after an intense sweat session) and feel as good at the end of the day as you did at the start of the day, you will never wear anything else!" Noa says.

In conjunction with the Australian Woolmark Company, the natural activewear brand produces a line of workout tees and tanks; Vie Active also makes sports bras, shorts, jackets, tights and more.

Is it healthy?

Sure, it's aesthetically pleasing to sweat a bit less (pit stains anyone?), but is it OK health-wise? Fret not, lovelies, Merino wool and other activewear materials aren't some kind of drastic medical cure, says Fountain MedSpa Attending Physician and Board Certified Physiatrist Dr. Todd Schlifstein. You'd need some heavy duty medical help (like armpit Botox injections) to drastically quell workout sweat. The wool is simply an extra bit of sweat insurance (along with your go-to deodorant).

"Controlling moisture and quick-drying material is good for your skin. Skin that stays moist for long periods of time in warm temperatures is at higher risk for skin breakdown, skin infections (such as fungal infections) and skin irritation," Dr. Schlifstein says. "If the skin and clothes remain dry you reduce the risks of these skin problems. Clothes that dry quickly allow you to be able to continue to wear the clothes without irritating your skin and being comfortable."

Don't be surprised if you sweat a touch more in other areas when wearing a moisture-wicking material though, Dr. Schlifstein says: "If your body is cooled through a material, it will sweat less. If you sweat less in one area you may sweat more in other areas if your body temperature is elevated."

Now that we've gotten the health clearance, go forth and enjoy your wool activewear, lovelies. We know we will.

VIDEO REVIEW: Pharrell's "Come Get It Bae" has one huge flaw

In the three-and-a-half minute clip, which dropped on Wednesday, July 23, Skateboard P sits in his director's chair, acts a fashion photographer, shoots a number of female dancers of all different colors and races in a studio with one killer city view. Despite an introductory message that reads, "Beauty has no expiration date," it looks like Williams failed to cast any ladies that are older than 30. Shame on you, Pharrell. Split screens flash mid-video as his girls wiggle, shake and groove to the same dance routine, proving that girls of all color look good dancing for Pharrell. And before you ask, he indeed is wearing a hat significantly smaller than his famed Arby's hat.

These Pharrell Williams parodies make us ridiculously happy >>

As the video nears the bridge of the song, there's one familiar face left to dance it out and that's Miley Cyrus. Sitting on a couch in a crop top and varsity jacket, the pop star pours herself a cup of sugar and later appears goofing off with the R&B extraordinaire. It's her usual affair with her tongue sticking out and exposed midriff, and reminds us of her over-the-top onstage antics.

"Come Get It Bae" is Pharrell's latest single off his album G I R L, which was released back in March. He performed a special mash-up of the song with Missy Elliot at the 2014 BET Awards in Los Angeles.

Finally! An emoji app that realizes one face doesn't fit all

But until recently, the only emoji faces to choose from were those goofy yellow humanoid Pac-Man-looking things. Now, thanks to Katrina Parrott, creator of iDiversicons, an app with racially and ethnically diverse emoji, you can tag your sentence with a face that actually looks like you.

Emoji

Emoji

The beginning of iDiversicons came when Parrott's daughter Katy, a UT Austin student, asked a simple question: "Wouldn’t it be nice to have emoticons that look like the person sending them?" And so, Parrott, with no developer experience, set out with an illustrator to create new faces for the digital world.

"It was precisely the kind of 'a-ha!' moment that leads to an incredible, game-changing idea," Parrot says. "So immediately we — Katy Parrott and mom Katrina Parrott — got to work and came up with a powerful answer to Katy’s question: iDiversicons, the new set of emoticons that show the world how you really feel."

Now, and thanks to help from a Kickstarter campaign that funded the entire project there are now more than 900 iDiversicon emoji available through the app available for download in the App Store or Google Play Store.

"Our biggest challenge in development was the limitations associated with the Unicode standard," Parrot adds. "iDiversicons allows the user to text and email images through a simple copy-and-paste process."

Emoji is a Japanese word meaning "picture letter" and they have become a part of our daily digital communication. To give you a visual, check out this emoji tracker for Twitter, which counts up all of the emoji being used on Twitter in real-time in a mind-blowing, light-flashing billboard. A word of warning: the page might induce a seizure.

Emoji Nelson

In the meantime, Parrott continues to create ever more diverse emoji all the time, like the Nelson Mandela face she created to commemorate his birthday. She also takes requests, which is pretty cool. Is there a new emoticon would you like to see? Let us know and we can pass the idea along.

The Originals star Joseph Morgan marries Persia White

The hunky vampire actor tied the knot after he proposed to girlfriend White back in May of this year. The pair met on the set of The Vampire Diaries, the series that The Originals spun off fromduring Season 3. Morgan plays original vampire Klaus Mikaelson on both series, while White portrayed the mom of Bonnie Bennett, played by Diaries series regular Kat Graham.

The intimate wedding took place in Ocho Rios and had a "very rustic feel to it," White told People.

"There was nothing about it that was overwhelming or very huge or fabulous in that way," White added. "We tried to keep everything really intimate and beautiful and sort of going along with nature."

For their wedding attire, the pair opted for a classical look. White wore a Vera Wang princess-style gown, while Morgan sported a black-and-ivory tux by Miguel Wilson. "And then I had a bow tie," Morgan quipped. "In fact, the bow tie was the first bow tie I've ever tied myself, so I was quite proud of that."

At the ceremony, which took place at a private villa, there were only 26 guests and it was just steps away from where the couple actually got engaged. "I think one of the reasons we picked it was because we love the ocean and we both grew up by the sea," White said. "To be by the sea was wonderful. And the people of Jamaica are just wonderful."

After a beautiful wedding, an awesome honeymoon in Negril and hopefully some more TV projects together, the newlyweds hope to start a family and have "little, cute mini-Josephs."

This is the first wedding for Morgan and the second for White, who divorced husband Saul Williams in January 2009 after just one year of marriage. White also has a daughter named Mecca from a previous relationship.
