Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band is one happy dad. Not only did wife Shelly give birth to his fifth child, he finally got the son he has always wanted.
The band announced the big arrival on their social media sites. They wrote, "Baby makes 7! [We] are pleased to announce the arrival of Alexander Frost Brown. Born May 5, 2014 [weighing in] at 11 lbs., 7 oz. and [measuring] 22.5 inches long."
That's one big boy.

The 36-year-old country singer already has a full household with daughters Justice, 7, Lucy, 5 1/2, Georgia Sloan, 4 1/2, and Joni Mason, 3. He loves his girls, but he has always wanted a mini-me.
He told People in jest in 2011, "We're just gonna keep on going until we get a boy," shortly after his fourth daughter was born.
The couple announced their pregnancy and the sex of their baby in November. The duo wrote on their Twitter page, "#BabyBrown Update! Please help us congratulate Zac and Shelly as they welcome their 1st baby BOY this spring!”
In addition to his growing family, the Zac Brown Band is heading out on the road for their Great American Road Trip tour in May. The group has been promoting their album, The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1, all year, including at a Super Bowl pre-party. Their first stop is in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the tour will continue through mid-September.
Congratulations, Zac and Shelly!

Clay Aiken won over the hearts of the masses years ago on American Idol, and it looks like he was able to garner those votes again as he holds a slight lead in the Democratic primary in North Carolina's 2nd congressional district.
Aiken's road to the primary congressional seat in North Carolina is shaping up to be a tight race. At time of press, the singer led his opponent Keith Crisco at 40.9 percent to 39.5. He's nabbed enough votes to avoid a runoff, but there are still provisional, absentee and military absentee ballots that need to be tallied. The last of the votes will be counted on Monday, May 6. If Aiken wins this race, he'll face off against two-term Republican representative Renee Ellmers in November.
Aiken locking in the race will be an impressive feat considering Crisco ran four television campaign advertisements. While Aiken only put out one ad, he definitely had some support from his celebrity friends, like former Idol competitor Ruben Studdard and his Celebrity Apprentice challenger Arsenio Hall. Both friends took to Twitter recently to show Aiken some love.
Proud of my friend @ClayAiken. We need more people like him in Congress. http://t.co/fE120lj4Ut #ncpol #nc02

Aiken spoke to ABC News earlier this week about his celebrity and the hurdle it became when running in this race. "Obviously, the name recognition is a plus. It gets people to the table. There is that challenge of getting people to see me in a different light, to change the lens that they're looking at me through," the always-opinionated star said. "But the name recognition has gotten people to the table and gives us the chance to actually talk to people. And once we actually talk to people, it's easier to get them to look at me in a different way."
It's been five months since 20th Century Fox whet our appetites with a teaser trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, so when we heard a new trailer was being released, we got a little excited.
Then we sat down to watch the trailer and were like:
Talk about intense.
When credits rolled on Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011, we were left wondering what would happen to Caesar, a super-intelligent chimp, and all his rescued monkey friends now that they had escaped into the Muir forest north of San Francisco.
And we knew things were going to get bad for the humans, what with that pesky man-made virus starting to spread.
But we had no idea when the story would pick up next.
Well, we've got our answer: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes begins a decade after James Franco said goodbye to Caesar beneath the redwoods, and it looks like things have gone from bad to worse.
Oh, yes, Keanu. Much worse.
With Caesar leading the pack, the apes have established an impressive woodland community — complete with a school for the little ones — but a band of human survivors threatens their civilization, leading to all-out war.
Maybe it's humankind's ego that makes us go crazy for dogs in sweaters and cats that dine at the dinner table, but when we saw those apes astraddle those ponies, our jaws just dropped.
Call us sentimental, but when we see a big ol' orangutan teaching young chimpanzees not to kill one another, we get a little choked up. Maybe because we know these primate commandments are only going to last as long as there is a greater threat to their survival: mankind.
Holy cow — we don't know who was more surprised, the hiker or the apes. But when the hiker pulls out his gun? OMG. And when the rest of the apes come swinging over the ridge, surrounding the small band of humans? O. M. G! We totally got the shivers.
Talk about a punch in the gut. James Franco may not have returned for the sequel, but that doesn't mean Caesar isn't thinking about him. The trailer doesn't tell us what happened to Franco's character, but by the way Caesar is looking at that video camera, we're pretty sure it's a tearjerker. Bring the tissue.
Whether you find yourself rooting for the diseased and displaced humans or the intelligent, freedom-fighting apes, you've got to admit that your body experienced a little adrenaline rush at the sight of Caesar painted for battle. A part of you may have even been braced to run, because who in their right mind would look at that face and think, "I'm going to go poke at that with my metal boom-boom stick"?
Apparently the answer is Gary Oldman, whose character seems to be spoiling for a fight.
With all this and more packed into just over two minutes of footage, we're agog with anticipation for this flick to come out.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens on July 11 in 2D and 3D, and stars Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Jason Clarke and Judy Greer, with Andy Serkis as Caesar.
Be prepared to see your credit rates spike post-foreclosure. It goes without saying that other creditors may feel uneasy about whether they will collect what you owe them. Be prepared to struggle with not only credit cards, but car loans and other purchases. If the foreclosure was your only major screw up, you may be able to recover to a decent credit score after 24 months. However, if it was just one fallout among many, you may never be able to fully recover.
Dreaming of buying another home? Be prepared to wait a minimum of five years, if not seven. And be ready to show that you are timely with your bill paying and are exercising good financial habits in general. If you can prove that your foreclosure was due to extenuating circumstances (such as a severe injury or illness), you may be able to cut this time down to three years.
After a foreclosure, there’s also a chance you may have to explain the event to a hiring company. Companies may perform background and credit checks as a standard part of their hiring process. Plus, if you’re in a position to handle money or deal with anything financial related at your job, it could be even more likely that they question your judgment due to the foreclosure.
Just because you’ve walked away from the home, doesn’t mean you’ve escaped all the bills. You may be ridding yourself from the burden of a mortgage payment, but the IRS may view your forgiven payment as a gift, thus taxable income. Additionally, you may be liable for capital gains taxes due to the sale of your home. Though it’s not a sale in the traditional sense, the IRS views it as a sale under the tax code. You’ll want to discuss your mortgage and cancellation-of-debt income with a tax professional to see how your unique situation is impacted.
Walking away from your home and neighborhood that you may have lived in for many years — and created a lot of memories in — can be a psychological battle. It can be daunting to come to terms with your new financial situation, or you may be feeling sadness, shame or embarrassment. One small upside here is that because foreclosures have become so common, especially in recent years, you may find people to be a lot more understanding.

We're sad to announce that The CW cut three shows from its lineup this week. They may not have been heavy hitters, but we're certain at least some of you will be disappointed. On their list of cancellations: The Carrie Diaries, Star-Crossed, The Tomorrow People and the Supernatural spin-off Bloodlines.
The Carrie Diaries was the network's longest-running show on the cancellation list. It ran for two shortened seasons (13 episodes each), but never seemed to get the audience The CW hoped for from a show that was the prequel for the blockbuster known as Sex and The City. It seemed younger fans never got into the show and fans of the original weren't interested in seeing their favorite character's teenage years.
Star-Crossed only aired 12 episodes of its 13-episode season before receiving the ax. The show's romantic premise hit home for a lot of viewers, but sadly not enough to keep the fledgling series on the air.
The Tomorrow People aired its full 22-episode season and just had its finale this week. Though the story line had its rocky points throughout the season, the show seemed to be reaching its stride in recent episodes. Moving away from being purely about the lead character, it explored a much wider world and even introduced a possible apocalypse. But alas, the bigger stories and love of those loyal fans who stuck with it wasn't enough for it to get a second season.
Though it didn't actually air on its own, the last show to see the CW's ax was the Supernatural spin-off known as Bloodlines (originally titled Tribes). Of the shows that were canceled, Supernatural: Bloodlines had the track record that could have made it a hit. Supernatural is heading into its 10th season next fall and has a rabid fan base, but it was those same fans that spelled the end for Bloodlines. One look at the pilot (which aired as an episode on the original series) and fans were very vocal about their dislike of the new show.
Bloodlines was touted as too slick by viewers used to Supernatural's grittier themes. Nor did they seem to like a story based in a big city and based on dueling monster families. In fact, many fans wondered why the network didn't take some of the original show's beloved characters and use them as the basis for a spin-off, or perhaps even an origins story going back to earlier generations of Winchesters (the family of monster hunters around which Supernatural is based).
A new study in Cell reports that the bears underwent genetic changes to allow them to eat their high-fat diets and survive in the Arctic. Genes related to the bears' cardiovascular and metabolic systems changed through mutations to allow them to pig out on fatty foods without having a high risk for heart disease.
The bears have high levels of triglycerides and LDL (bad) cholesterol. That would cause heart disease in humans, but the bears' genetic changes have made the bears able to survive despite the diets. The scientists noted a change in the gene APOB, which transports cholesterol out of the bloodstream and into cells — reducing the bears' risk for heart disease.
The scientists also found that the species diverged from brown bears less than 500,000 years ago, so it's newer than we originally thought.
"For polar bears, being very fat is no problem," said Eline Lorenzen, a molecular ecologist at the University of California, Berkeley. Polar bears can be about 1,700 pounds.
Up to half of a polar bear's body weight can be fat and their source of fresh water is metabolic water that is a byproduct of the breakdown of fat in the body.
The researchers examined blood and tissue samples from 79 polar bears from Greenland along with samples from 10 brown bears.
"In this short amount of time, polar bears have adapted to the cold environment of the Arctic and to a new diet. We see the footprints of this adaptation in the genome of the polar bear," said Rasmus Nielsen, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of California, Berkeley.
OK, maybe we don't want to live on a high-fat diet (though we're not opposed to the occasional indulgence). Just don't overdo it — we definitely do not have the genetic capabilities to handle too much.

Let me start by saying The Vampire Diaries is one of my favorite shows on television. I love how witty and satirical it can be, but Thursday night's episode was ridiculous. Not necessarily bad ridiculous, but, well, sort of, considering the end. The show left me feeling completely unsure of what I just watched. Is this The Twilight Zone? Because it surely can't be The Vampire Diaries, especially if the death at the end of this episode holds.
The Travelers drain Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan's (Paul Wesley) blood into dirty old silver tin pails. Who has tin pails anymore? Don't The Travelers use Tupperware? I get it, I get it. They're nomadic.
Then, to top it off, Stefan suggests Elena let him know if she sees a buffalo when she complains about being hungry with only squirrels to eat. (Yes, they're eating squirrels.) Not a cow or a horse, Stefan goes straight for buffalo. Where are we right now? It sure doesn't sound like Mystic Falls.
Does anyone really understand what The Travelers are doing at this point? Sure, they're looking for their own little piece of paradise, and they really don't like the witches. We get it. So they're going to take over Mystic Falls after killing off everything supernatural except themselves? Aside from that boring picture of an ending, why can't The Travelers just be happy in their own bodies for a while? It's gotten way too convoluted.
As Markos' master plan begins to take effect, he encourages Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to run so he'll have a little time to say goodbye. Since all his friends are also supernaturals, wouldn't a simple "see ya soon" suffice? Either way, Damon takes Markos up on the offer and flees but not before he grabs his coat and shuts the door behind him, of course. All with one long, pitiful glance back at Markos as he leaves his house behind.
Don't worry, Damon and Elena have time to make a pit stop for kisses because, as we've learned, anything goes during a bad day, no matter how broken up you may be.
Seriously, who comes up with this stuff? It's fantastic how the show kind of makes fun of itself while also being so intelligently funny. Here are the best lines of Thursday night's episode in all their nonsensical glory.
Julian, as Tyler, rips out Stefan's heart. And this is the part of the episode where we know none of this can possibly mean anything permanent for the future of the show because Stefan can't die. He just can't. He's not allowed. Especially since he and Caroline still have so much unfinished business. There is no The Vampire Diaries without Stefan. Period.
We're convinced his death will simply serve as Bonnie's much needed motivation to save everyone's life. She and Enzo had the start of a plan, after all. At least we have the season finale next week to put everything back in its proper place. Namely, Stefan's heart back in his chest. Please and thanks.
With Mother's Day just around the corner, it got us thinking about all the celebrity moms in Hollywood and their offspring, and as much as we'd like to believe that parents don't have favorites, well, apparently some do.
According to our infographic, one in four moms has admitted to having a favorite child. And here's the shocker... 51 percent say it's the oldest child they like the most! (Cue the tears now if you are not the oldest.) That figure was followed by 35 percent for the youngest and a depressing 14 percent for the middle child — now we know why there's a thing called middle child syndrome.
So this information got us thinking about celebrity siblings and who their mothers (on-screen or off) may actually prefer.
Alex and Emma Watson's parents must be seriously proud. These British siblings have starred in Harry Potter films together (although Alex was an extra and Emma was the lead) and as models for Burberry campaigns.
Born to British lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, Emma is the older sibling, and thus far, the more popular one. That's not to say parents pick their favorites based on their children's success, but if they did, Emma would win.
While Jake Gyllenhaal may not be great with the ladies, one lady he is great with is his older sister Maggie Gyllenhaal.
We don't know who their real mom's favorite child is, but as far as on-screen moms go, Maggie was definitely the favorite in the dark yet thought provoking film Donnie Darko.
There's not much age difference between celebrity twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen — two minutes to be exact — so we're not sure how much favoritism their mother has when it comes to this duo. In fact, not even their on-screen moms could pick because they were always swapping parents.
The Kardashian sisters are always fighting it out for matriarch Kris Jenner's attention. Khloé is convinced she's not her mother's favorite and has confessed on more than one occasion that she thinks she may not be a Kardashian... so that leaves Kim and Kourtney.
Kourtney is the oldest Kardashian sister, but we're convinced the 58-year-old momager prefers Kim. Why? Jenner has spent a great deal of time focusing on Kim's career and ensuring she takes every opportunity that has ever been presented to her.
Casey Affleck is Ben Affleck's younger and not quite as famous sibling, but the two appear to get on very well and even frequently collaborate professionally.
It would be a tough decision to pick between these two down-to-earth guys, and we're not sure their mother Christine Anne could do it. As for on-screen mothers, well, the brothers haven't had many of those either.
Even though Haylie Duff is older than her sister Hilary by two and a half years, professionally her younger sister has outshone her. Whether the blond beauty's mother Susan Colleen has a favorite, well, we can't be sure. But she has been the co-executive producer on several of Hilary's movies such as The Cinderella Story, Material Girls and The Perfect Man. Hmmm?
You can't get much more vibrant than the flavors of lemon and basil. Both are bright and flavorful and combine to make a fab dish like this recipe for gluten-free spicy lemon-pesto pasta with chicken.
Use your favorite gluten-free pasta (I used a quinoa pasta shaped like corkscrews) and grilled chicken to mix together with this colorful pesto. I elevated the pesto just a bit and added a few dashes of hot sauce and some red pepper flakes.
This recipe makes a lovely spring-inspired meal. You can turn to this pesto recipe again and again, as it works well with fish, chicken and tofu.
Note: Gluten can be found in many different foods and products, from ketchup to soy sauce to candy and seasonings. British surgeons have developed an experimental new procedure that places a hardened silicone cup under the skin of each breast and then uses silk straps to bolt the cups to the rib cage with titanium screws, like an internal bra.
What I want to know is who are these ladies who want to wear a bra 24-7? As a mom who has birthed five kids, I'd love it if the girls just faced forward, much less looked perky, so I can see the allure — and yet is there anything more delightful than coming home after a long day and ditching the Playtex for pajamas? So what if your double D's get a little droopy — that's just what breasts do.
Plus having two "hardened silicone cups" under my skin seems like it might hurt — a reasonable fear says Dr. Eugene Elliott, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California. "In my experience anything stiff enough to be supportive would likely be very uncomfortable, especially if you ever wanted to lie on your stomach," he says. Not to mention the pain of having titanium screws drilled into your rib cage — a pain he says would be like having your ribs cracked... times 10.
What we really need to talk about though is the nasty issue of extrusion. Apparently there's a real risk of the pressure of daily wear and tear forcing the cups out through your skin. If you thought it was bad when you missed a button and flashed your bra at the office, imagine what an impression you'd make if your bra actually popped out of your skin.
So far the surgery has only been performed on three women and the device hasn't been approved by the FDA. Even when a surgical technique is proven and performed under ideal circumstances, there are still risks and those are amplified for experimental procedures like this that haven't undergone any clinical testing or studies yet.
And all this for what — to achieve the look of perfectly perky bra-free breasts? Why not just wear a normal bra that you can take off when you want to? This seems like just one more way that women are being told that the normal state of our breasts — from time, childbirth or genetics — is wrong.
Women's breasts aren't meant to face forward and stand at attention all the time. Even the Victoria's Secret Angels get to take off their bras and relax.

A new hot couple alert may be in the works after Robert Pattinson was spotted reportedly holding hands with a pretty blond model.
Pattinson was photographed as he left The Little Door, a hot spot in Los Angeles, at around 1:00 a.m last Friday night with a hot new girl, Us Weekly reported. The girl was eventually identified as 22-year-old LA model Imogen Ker.
The twosome was snapped several times by stand-by photographers as they exited the chic hangout venue and got into a waiting car together. Pattinson was dressed in jeans and a black jacket, sporting a 5 o'clock shadow, while Ker, also in jeans, clutched an iPhone in one hand and a cigarette in the other.
"He was leading her out; it was romantic," a source told Us. Then, a few days before that, Pattinson and Ker were also seen getting cozy and holding hands at Hollywood's Good Times at Davey Wayne's.
Apparently, the Twilight hunk and his new girl were introduced by mutual pal Dakota Fanning a while back. Incidentally, Ker is also friendly with Pattinson's ex, Kristen Stewart, and it appears she's OK with the model dating her longtime ex.
The last time Pattinson was believably in a possible relationship, he was rumored to be dating Dylan Penn. The 27-year-old Englishman went out on a few dates with Sean Penn and Robin Wright's daughter, although nothing serious between the two ever developed.
Pattinson has also sparked big relationship rumors with Katy Perry on several occasions, although the pair are just very good friends and often go out together. The two pals were actually spotted hanging out at Coachella's H&M Loves Music Party, where they talked and partied for several hours with a group of friends.
There are laws on the books in many areas that say not only are mothers allowed to nurse their babies wherever they are legally allowed to be, but the act of harassing them (for example, asking them to use a cover or leave the premises) is illegal. This is the subject of a bill that died last year in Texas — a bill a state representative plans to reintroduce next year. So when graphic art students were asked to create an ad campaign that reflected a real-world social issue or project, University of North Texas students Johnathan Wenske and Kris Haro decided to tackle nursing in public. And their striking ad campaign has hit a nerve.
Breastfeeding in public is a polarizing topic. So many people say that breastfeeding is fine, "but" only if certain conditions are met — such as moms must cover themselves if they are nursing in public, or they should only breastfeed in private. However, state laws protect moms from being asked to cover or move (Missouri just recently passed a law making that illegal, in fact), so even if you're uncomfortable at the sight of a nursing mom, you simply have to look away. It's that simple.
However, there are many, many folks out there who feel that it's indecent, disturbing, obscene or should be illegal to breastfeed in public. These are the ones who feel that it's perfectly acceptable to ask a nursing mother to nurse their babies in a hot car, in a bathroom, on a toilet or "somewhere else" and this is why nursing mothers need to be protected. When a mom is approached by an employee of a business and asked to move or cover up, for example, it can really take her off guard and can be a humiliating experience.
A Texas bill that would have made this sort of harassment of a nursing mother illegal fizzled out last year, but the legislator who introduced it plans to revive it in 2015. These graphic art students decided to tackle the issue head on and it was immediately clear why such a law needs to be in place everywhere.
Each poster in their When Nurture Calls campaign depicts a mother nursing her baby while she sits on a toilet in a public restroom. The posters are designed to be affixed to the interior of a stall to raise awareness and make you think while you're going about your business — would you want to eat where people poop and pee? No. Nobody would. So it's unfair to expect a baby to eat under such conditions. Unfortunately, when the images were released, a firestorm of public opinion burst forth. A popular blogger posted one of the images on Facebook and it raced around social media, bringing out messages of support as well as vile judgment of the mother's appearance, her age and her "indecency."
Breastfeeding in public is a basic human right — a right of the mother to nurture her baby undisturbed, and the right of the baby to be able to eat without restriction. It's sad what these images have revealed about the general public, but with time and with more moms nursing their kiddos in public, hopefully it will cease to be an issue.

Even if your relationship is over, the father of your kids can give you a serious headache by bad-mouthing you to your children. Here's how you can take the high road with your kids.
If you're divorced and co-parenting, you're likely familiar with the sickeningly powerless feeling that arises when you learn your ex is bad-mouthing you to the kids. Community members of the online divorce support group First Wives World are quick to chime in with their bad-mouthing horror stories.
"When [my ex] has the kids on the weekends," writes Patti, "he tries to drill them for information and tries to drive a wedge between me and them by saying negative things about me. I know because the kids tell me." Dawn adds, "It's now been seven months since my ex left, and in all that time he's done nothing but berate my parenting skills to my daughter. Last weekend he called my daughter fat and said it's because I'm fat and feed her badly."
Mud-slinging stories like those shared on First Wives World have the makings of a nightmare. Any mother would feel the urge to turn into a mama bear to protect her kids from vitriol of any kind, but the stakes are much higher, obviously, when it feels like your reputation as a mother is on the line. Let's be real — learning that your ex is mud-slinging in front of your kids can feel devastating and completely violating on an intensely personal level. Not only that, bad-mouthing can actually damage your relationship with your kids by turning them against you. Many moms report that their kids grow alienated, distant and downright mean when they hear nasty rumors and assertions from their dads.
Since you've already survived the breakup of your marriage, you're likely aware that reasoning, pleading and begging will do little to fix a problem behavior like bad-mouthing — unless your ex is committed to changing. Unfortunately, if he thinks it's appropriate to say terrible things about you in front of the kids, then he's likely past the point of change and reason.
We spoke with nationally-renowned psychologist Dr. Richard Warshak to hear his take on what a mom can do when she learns her ex is engaged in bad-mouthing to the kids. First of all, he was clear that moms need to avoid the temptation to spin stories and return the bad-mouthing. Doing so may make you feel better but it won't correct anything in the long run. Then he suggested zeroing in on your relationship with your child to assertively correct misinformation about you. Consider the following "fixes" if you sense that your child is aligning with your ex as a result of the mud-slinging.
Without a doubt, these methods are a lot harder than returning insults to your ex. They might not feel as good in the moment, either. But rising above the fray will give your children a safe environment to process their feelings in a loving home, which is worth any difficulty you may face.

It was possibly one of the worst-kept secrets in Hollywood this year, but the rumor has finally been confirmed: Mila Kunis is definitely pregnant. During an appearance on Ellen, the actress confirmed she and Ashton Kutcher are expecting their first child later this year.
"Now, you hid it for a while. I mean, you got away with it for a long time," DeGeneres said.
"I did," Kunis replied. "We were actually able to hide it for a very long time. I know, it's amazing."
While she shied away from revealing her due date, she did say that Kutcher prepared for this pregnancy in the best possible way: by stocking the fridge.
"He assumed that I was gonna have goofy cravings, so he stocked our secondary fridge with weird food," she said. "Just like pickles and sauerkraut, or like anchovies and ice creams… just in case at one point during this pregnancy I'd be like, 'I really want something.'
"And it happened last week, I was like, 'Oh my God, I need a pickle.' Like it was just the weirdest thing. Like I needed this pickle and he was like, 'Hold on a second,' and disappeared in the backyard and came back with the most amazing dill pickle of all time."
Kunis also said she is hoping for a 100 percent natural, unmedicated birth.
"We watched a couple of documentaries and we looked into the, like, the you know, midwife aspect of it and things, and spoke to my OB/GYN and realized that the hospital that I'm going to be laboring in does have a midwife, you know, doula type of thing," she said. "So I'm gonna do it as all natural as I possibly can unless there's an emergency or something [goes] wrong."
Kunis didn't say what names she and Kutcher are considering for their new addition, but we hope they'll consider some of our suggestions.

As I reflect back on my first year of motherhood, this quote by Henry Ward Beecher particularly speaks to me: "We never know the love of the parent until we become parents ourselves."
I have the privilege of being surrounded by three incredible moms — my own mother, who has taught me incredible life lessons, and two wonderful mother-in-laws, who have welcomed me into their families as one of their own.
In honor of Mother's Day, I'm sharing a collection of quotes, poems and stories by moms and about moms. I hope you enjoy these sweet sentiments and the accompanying family photos. (I'm admittedly partial to the first quote listed from my mother-in-law Shellie Dunlap, which includes a memorable bonding moment she shared with my daughter.)
Happy Mother's Day moms!

Forgive me, Lord
for all the tasks
that went undone today.
But this morning when my child
toddled in and asked, "Mommy play?"
I simply had to say yes.
And between the puzzles and trucks
and blocks and dolls and old hats and
books and giggles,
we shared a thousand special thoughts,
a hundred hopes and dreams and hugs.
And tonight, when prayer time came
and he folded his hands and softly whispered,
"Thank you, God, for Mommy and Daddy and
toys and french fries, but ‘specially
for Mommy playing,"
I knew it was a day well wasted.
And I knew You’d understand.

My mother, Hilda, served as a wireless operator in the Women’s Royal Air Force during WWII, mostly stationed in the south of England, close to London.
Decades later, and after a few sherries, she’d regale us with her adventures; dancing to swing bands, sneaking back to the barracks in the early hours and the time that she narrowly missed being flattened by a German bomb while on a weekend pass in London.
"Oh yes," she would always say, "I had a wonderful war."

The perils of being a mother, are equal to not any other
For granted she’s taken and often mistaken — for a robot, "She’ll do it — why bother?"
A mom has a time clock she punches — breakfast dishes done — oops, time for lunches.
From 8 to 12 Hey! All her time’s slipped away — her work comes in bunches and bunches.
The lunch turns up — half on the floor. And they turned up their noses like before.
As usual — she fixed it. And as usual — they nixed it, and then in an hour they want more.
After supper she wails to her spouse, "I’ve got to get out of this house!
I think you will find that I’m losing my mind, and yes — this is blood on my blouse!"
The day has been just like another — and so ends the day of A MOTHER.

"You can't spell 'moments' without mom. Life may be full of moments, but you only get one mom to experience them with." - Jacob Markiewicz
- Jacob Markiewicz came up with this quote when he saw a picture frame that read "Life is full of moments" and realized that "mom" begins the word. He used the above quote with his mom a year ago, which she loved.
When I was a little girl, I would watch my mom closely, seeing her as a beautiful example of what it is to be a grown-up. For some reason I mostly focused on her hands wrapped around never-ending coffee mugs. Her slender, pretty fingers were so different from my short chubby ones. And the look of reflective calm that came over Mom with the first few sips of each steaming cup of that grown-up beverage seemed to me the epitome of adulthood. Watching my mom, I knew that it was wonderful to be a grown-up!
So as I sit and sip my adult coffee brew today and look far off into myself, I feel as though I am mostly grown-up. I see a bit of my mom in me, and that's beautiful!
And when I look down at my still short and chubby fingers, I am reminded that I will always have more growing up to do. I see a bit of only me in me, and I smile.
My mom taught me to be myself, and she encouraged that by exampling it always. So now I am a comfortable mixture of us. I love that.

The smallest, flickering moment —
the turning-on of a lamp, the brewing
of just one more cup of tea,
the contribution of spare change
because of one mention that it bought
thrift store paperbacks;
tiny affectionate expressions
pile up, a hand at my shoulder
or a kiss on my cheek.
Smiles in my direction
crank up the atmosphere,
wiping away the
grime of my thoughts —
listening, supporting, forgiving.
Love of a mother is
sweeter than chocolate,
stronger than hurricanes,
thicker than blood, and
ever-enduring.

"Here is a poem my daughter wrote for me last month after I told her I was finally graduating college," shared Sedaria Williams. "It brought tears to my eyes."
By Aureon Johnson
I look like her, I sound like her at times
I find myself reacting to situations like her with all the grace of a ballerina
People ask are we sisters, Momma laughs and says "She wishes…"
I never knew her journey until recently
Being a teen, I didn't want to look like mom or sound like her
She was middle aged…. We had twenty years between us
I found out that after 12 long and hard years, she is finally graduating from college
Her journey lasted this long because she was willing to give me everything I need and more
She sacrificed for me… She forfeited her life to make my life better
So, yes I look like her, I sound like her at times
I find myself reacting to situations like her with all the grace of a ballerina
People ask are we sisters, Momma laughs and says "She wishes…"
I say no — that's my mother!!!
My mother, my twin, my hero
By LinDee Rochelle
My Mother, who art in heaven,
hallowed be her name.
Her spirit comes
though her job is done
and she rests now, in heaven.
She gave me each day her daily bread (of life),
forgave me my trespasses,
and urged me to forgive those who trespass against me,
she guided me away from temptation
and protected me from evil.
My heart is now her kingdom,
with all her power, and glory
within, forever and ever.
Amen.
LinDee Rochelle, author of Blast from Your Past book series, reverently adapted this poem from The Lord's Prayer for all whose mothers are in spirit only.
- A poem about my mother, who died two years ago.
Beautiful spring blossoms conjure memories of you,
My sassy marmalade Mama at age 42.
"Don’t take shit from anybody," she often said to me,
"Get your degree, then a marriage, then, think about a baby."
As she grew into her fifties and the arthritis got worse,
She still carried Fashion Fair lipstick in her overstuffed purse.
Once she arrived in her sixties I could see her growing tired,
But she always kept me focused on reasons to stay inspired.

Accept the gift that is your life and follow rules of your own definition."

On Saturday, an 18,000-square-foot store will open in South Gate, California, boasting items like $2 tanks and $8 jeans.
You know what the color red usually signals? Pump the breaks.
I’m probably not alone in being guilty of shopping at Forever 21 here and there (I mean, sometimes you just can’t pass up a $9 clutch for that last-minute date), but can you possibly fathom garments that are cheaper than their current lineup?
And I of course don’t just mean the price. The craftsmanship (a generous word) of these pieces must be hitting an all-time low in order to pump out clothing that can sell at these prices. Not to mention the issues about who is making them and what they’re getting paid.
Granted, F21 Red is probably aimed at tweens with an allowance. They probably don’t really care whether or not a 30-year-old is interested in what they’re offering. To put it in terms that their target demo will never understand: Contempo Casuals is probably rolling in their grave right now.
Don’t get me wrong though. I may be almost a decade too old to shop at Forever 21, but I might have to put on a trench coat and sunglasses and pop into a F21 Red store near me to see what they’re up to. Hey, maybe I'll snag an ill-fitting dress that will cost less than I'll pay to park and might make it through one wash if I sell my soul or something.

Hugh Jackman's gorgeous face has been sliced into once again as the actor revealed he had a second skin cancer removed.
The X-Men: Days Of Future Past star revealed the second surgery to fans on Instagram, along with a stern warning: Wear sunscreen!
"Another Basel [sic] Cell Carsinoma [sic]. All out now. Thanks Dr. Albom and Dr. Arian. PLEASE! PLEASE! WEAR SUNSCREEN!" he wrote.
Jackman first battled the sun-induced disease in November 2013 and told fans with a similar Instagram shot.
"Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked," he wrote. "Boy, was she right! I had a basil [sic] cell carcinoma."
According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, the recurrence of Jackman's basal cell carcinoma is not unusual. After one year, a person's chances of a recurrence are 18 percent, but after five years those odds jump to 55 percent. There are approximately 2.8 million cases of basal cell carcinoma diagnosed each year in the U.S., and nearly one in five Americans will develop the disease, which can be fatal if not caught and treated in time.
