Bryan Cranston scares teen girl into going to prom

These days, asking a date to a prom is no joke. Gone are the days of a single rose and a sweetly-asked question. Now, lavish, well-thought-out, over-the-top prom proposals are all the rage.

High school senior asks model Kate Upton to prom >>

Bryan Cranston gave one teenage boy the prom date-asking ammunition of the decade when he recorded a video with the youngster asking his prospective date to go to the dance with him, according to the New York Daily News. Except the proposition was more of a demand than a question, really.

Seventeen-year-old Stefan Montana and his date of choice, Maddie, are huge fans of Breaking Bad, and Montana felt that Cranston backing him up in character as Walter White would be a hard offer to refuse.

"Would you say, Maddie, if you don't go to the prom with Stefan, then maybe you're best course of action would be to tread lightly?" Cranston asks ominously in the quick video. The camera pans over to the beaming high school junior who then asks, "Maddie will you go to prom with me?" The "tread lightly" phrase is, of course, a reference to the infamous TV chemistry teacher.

Cranston falls easily back into character, but that might be partially due to the fact that he admittedly sees a lot of Walter White in himself.

Montana, who was in New York visiting colleges with his family, waited outside Cranston's Broadway show, All the Way, and approached the actor as he was leaving. "It wasn't a realistic thought at first. But we were waiting (outside the theater) and I asked, 'Could you please do this?' He really is the nicest guy in the world," said Montana. "It really is true. He's not really a celebrity, he's a dude. He didn't have to help me out, but it was pretty amazing."

Word of Cranston's gracious deed comes hot on the heels of news that Taylor Swift surprised a fan by unexpectedly showing up at her bridal shower. We love hearing about celebs showing appreciation for their admirers.

Montana uploaded the video to Instagram to formally invite Maddie to prom. She, of course, accepted and not a moment too soon... their prom is this Saturday in Los Gatos, California.

Hemlock Grove primer: Season 2 kicks off July 11

Hemlock Grove Season 2

Fans of Hemlock Grove will be happy to know that the Netflix series will indeed be premiering a second season. Starting on July 11, 2014, at exactly 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time, Netflix subscribers can begin watching Season 2. Right in the middle of the summer will be the perfect time to settle down in a nice, dark, air-conditioned room and binge on the entire season from beginning to end.

Hemlock Grove recap: Season 1 is worth the watch >>

The premise

Hemlock Grove follows the strange happenings in a small town of the same name occupied by people with supernatural powers and afflictions. The story begins when a number of murders happen in town and the resulting investigation leads to many more mysteries. At the core of the show is the odd friendship that develops between two young men, Roman (Bill Skarsgård) and Peter (Landon Liboiron). But although the show centers often on them, it is, in fact, full of many more characters, each one of them more unusual than the last.

Hemlock Grove recap: An intriguing beginning >>

What I liked

As a horror fan and a fan of supernatural stories in general, this series had a lot of elements that I enjoyed. Each character was a fresh take on the standard characters and creatures seen in this kind of show. For instance, it's no spoiler to say that the series features a werewolf, but the transformation of said werewolf from human to wolf was the most mouth-dropping moment in the series and done in a way that I have never seen before.

I also really loved the core relationship between Roman and Peter. They definitely held my attention and carried the bulk of the show for me in terms of story and interest level. As soon as they had a scene together, I found that I was unable to look away from the screen and felt compelled to lean in and carefully watch and listen to everything they were doing and saying.

Hemlock Grove's Kandyse McClure on Skarsgård and more >>

What I didn't like

In my opinion, Hemlock Grove did drag a little bit in parts, which made it hard for me to binge-watch it over a single weekend. I think that the pace of the show might be better suited to watching in shorter bursts — maybe one or two episodes at a time with a nice break (and perhaps a strong cup of coffee) in between. If you're looking for lots of action, you won't find it on this show. Instead, you should expect a slow and steady drama that doles out its story with cryptic dialogue, dark scenery and eerie music.

From porn to terror threats: Airlines have a bad day on Twitter

Airlines have been in the news all day, and not always in good circumstances. Sometimes, it's easy to forget what an impact a social media account can make on one person, on a country, or even on the world. But American Airlines and US Airways showed a few different ways to handle social media — or not handle it.

Social media dictionary: What your kids are really saying >>

The first tweet to go viral was from American Airlines. They received a tweet from someone named "Sarah" threatening terrorist activities, and they replied in the best way possible. The original message said, "Hello. My name's Ibrahim and I'm from Afghanistan. I'm part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I'm going to do something really big bye."

American Airlines responded quickly with their own threat.

"Sarah, we take these threats very seriously," the reply tweet said. "Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI."

The Twitter profile has since been deleted, but before it was, "Sarah" tweeted a series of replies, stating she is an obviously-scared teenager.

"I'm so sorry I'm scared now," she tweeted.

"I was joking and it was my friend not me, take her IP address not mine.

"I'm just a fangirl pls I don't have evil thoughts and plus I'm a white girl."

American Airlines decided to delete their original tweet because "it generated a lot of traffic. We took it down so we could better focus on our customers," spokeswoman Dori Alvarez told the NY Daily News.

It turned out that the teen is a 14-year-old Dutch girl and she has since been arrested in the Netherlands.

LOL! Watch the famous read mean tweets about themselves >>

Another conversation happened between a passenger and US Airways, but this one went very, very badly.

US Airways responded by saying, "@ellerafter We welcome feedback, Elle. If your travel is complete, you can detail it here for review and follow-up."

However, along with the tweet (which has since been deleted), the airline's Twitter handle included a very NSFW photo that can only be described as a naked woman and a strategically-placed toy airplane. According to BuzzFeed, the "graphic picture is originally from a German-language amateur porn and shock site."

The tweet was pulled down an hour later, and all the airline could do at that point was apologize.

5 More mysteries Courtney Love has solved through Twitter >>

US Airways hasn't yet explained what happened, but there is not much they can do to explain this one away.

In the war of Twitter, both airlines faced tough situations, but it looks like American Airlines may have won this one.

Oprah reduces Pharrell to "Happy" tears

Pharrell Williams chatted with Oprah Winfrey recently to talk about the success and inspiration behind his latest single, "Happy," and in true Oprah fashion, the interviewer had a surprise that brought about a strong emotional response from the superstar.

VIDEO: Oprah makes Lindsay Lohan cry >>

"Zero air play. Nothing," Williams said of "Happy," wearing his now iconic hat. "And then the next thing you know, we put out the video on November 21st, all of the sudden... boom. I mean, when I say boom, I mean, boom. And we were like, 'What's happening?' OK, first of all, people are putting up their own videos. It was like, no longer my song."

"I think we actually have a tape," replied Winfrey. "Can we roll the tape of that? When people started putting videos around the world of themselves gettin' happy."

Cue the touching video of men, women and children in places across the planet, from Detroit to Malawi, dancing and sharing their joy with the rest of the world. Williams quickly goes from calm and collected to speechless and sobbing with happiness.

Just as the singer was starting to pull himself together, Winfrey threw in, "I know. It makes me cry, too. You know, I was just thinking about your grandmother. I bet she didn't even imagine that." Come on, Oprah! You already got him crying, and now you're gonna pull the grandmother card?

"Why am I crying on Oprah?" Williams rhetorically asked with a teary smile as Winfrey handed him a tissue. "It's overwhelming because it's like, I love what I do and I just appreciate the fact that... people that believed in me for so long that I could make it to this point, to feel that."

Williams has a lot to be inspired and happy about right now in his own life. His career is huge with the success of "Happy" and "Blurred Lines," and he is set to step in as a judge on The Voice in place of CeeLo Green. His love life isn't doing so bad either: Williams wed longtime girlfriend, model Helen Lasichanh, in October.

"I get it," said Winfrey. "I really get it. I so now get why it's so infectious, because it came from such a clear space. That the energy was absolutely uninterrupted by anything other than allowing it to flow from heart to heart. And that's what happens when you see it."

Sunday was a big day for Mark Wahlberg. The actor was the toast of the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, and his latest film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, got a huge marketing push. During the broadcast, viewers were treated to a new TV spot for the film, which marks the beginning of a new era.

Mark Wahlberg to be honored with MTV's Generation Award >>

The promo featured Wahlberg as the series' new protagonist, Cade Yaeger. He and his daughter, Tessa (Nicola Peltz), get caught in a war between the Transformers and the government. According to the footage, the age of the Transformers is over. The robots that used to be viewed as heroes are now considered enemies of the state.

Michael Bay confirms new Transformers trilogy >>

Director Michael Bay has set the stage for another sequel, which will show the creatures in a new light. Unlike the original trilogy, the upcoming films will explore the aftermath of the Transformers' arrival. Their presence hasn't yielded all positive results. Yes, they saved the world from the Decepticons (multiple times), but they also did a lot of damage in the process.

The Autobots have their hands full with humans, as well as the Dinobots that are on the prowl.

Aside from Wahlberg and Peltz, the film also stars Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci and newcomer, Jack Reynor. Transformers: Age of Extinction opens in theaters June 27.

Paul Walker fans and sensible minds alike are none too happy to see Ice Cube ranting he was "robbed" of an MTV Movie Award by the late actor.

The rapper, seen here at Sunday night's event alongside wife, Kimberly Woodruff, has angered many by complaining about losing to the star, who died in a fiery crash last November.

Awkward moments you missed at the MTV Movie Awards >>

"We was robbed," 44-year-old Ice Cube told USA Today hours after the festivities ended. "Shame on you, MTV."

While he and Kevin Hart had been up for an award for their roles in Ride Along, the gilded popcorn ended up going to the late actor and Vin Diesel for their work in Fast & Furious 6.

"We had the best chemistry of everybody nominated, for us not to win was crazy," Cube, whose net worth is estimated to be in the neighborhood of $140 million, added of his role with Hart. "We were the best onscreen duo, period."

The comedic actor added of Walker, "They should have gave it to him before he passed away."

Along with his heap of hurt feelings about losing to Walker, Ice Cube vented about the ceremony as a whole.

"I just wasn't into it," he explained of the MTV Movie Awards. "I have been going in and out of these things for 25 years. If you ain't into it, why torture yourself? As soon as you get bored, get up and leave."

I've heard it's a good idea to "pre-treat" stains, but I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know what that means. Please explain.

Basically, pre-treating simply means you can't just throw your clothes into the wash. You need to apply something to the stain first to help release the stain from the clothing fibers. Stain sticks, wipes, pens and sprays are all popular ways to pre-treat a stain. You can also apply detergent and rub fabric together or use a soft brush to help release the stain. If none of these are available, soak the stain with plain water.

Help! I spilled red wine on my new white shirt. What should I do?

Relax. A little Shiraz on the shirt doesn't mean it's ruined. Grab a clean dry cloth and gently blot the excess liquid. Next, pour white vinegar over the stain, saturating it completely. Let the clothing sit for at least 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cold water and treat with a pre-wash cleaner (soaking longer if necessary). Once the stain has lightened, launder as usual. Do not dry until stain has been removed.

Uh-oh! My daughter just "decorated" my jeans with Crayola markers. Is there any way to remove the ink?

First, plunge your jeans into an ice-water bath and give them time to soak. If soaking doesn't remove the marker, try hand sanitizer. Squirt some sanitizer onto a soft cloth and gently rub on the stain in a circular motion. Work slowly, repeating with clean parts of the cloth and taking care not to spread the ink or marker to other parts of the clothing. After the stain is completely removed, spray with stain remover and wash as usual.

I discovered a giant wad of bubble gum on my son's baseball pants. How do I get it off? Peanut butter?

First, step away from the jar of Skippy. The peanut butter trick works to remove gum from hair, but to get that Big League Chew off your little slugger's pants, all you'll need is a piece of ice! Place one ice cube under the bubble gum stain and one on top. As the ice melts, the gum will freeze. Be patient — this could take up to 30 minutes. When the gum is frozen, use the flat side of a butter knife to scrape off the frozen chunk of gum and any extra bits. If there's any remaining gum or discoloration, use a spot cleaner or gently rub with regular clothing detergent and wash as usual.

Vacuum Cleaner

What would we do without a vacuum?

Vacuums can seem like pretty big investments. That's why it's important to get the most bang for your buck. Sure, it'll make your carpets look nice, but what else can you do with that hunk of metal and plastic? We have a few ideas.

There's a chance you might have tried some of these bright ideas already. Maybe you just forgot about how awesome that suction can be. Or maybe you're a vacuum owning newb. Either way, we've rounded up our favorite uses for a vacuum that will surely make your life easier... or at least more fun.

1

Catching bugs

We still remember out first apartment. Plenty of light. Our kitchen decorated just so. The ground floor with our very first patio housing our very first grill. And the katydids. A whole fleet of them. Invading our home. Thankfully, the vacuum drowned out their chirping and kept them a comfortable three feet away during removal.

2

Finding lost items

Stupid earring backs. Stupid earrings! They're forever rolling off your dresser, right? (This might be the cat's fault.) Next time something tiny and precious goes missing, grab a pair of pantyhose and secure it over the hose of the vacuum, then get to sucking around under the dresser. It'll slurp up your earring without eating it.

3

Perfecting the pony tail

Observe...

4

Lint roller

With a powerful enough vacuum and a sturdy enough pant, you can use one of the attachments to run up and down your pants to suck up lint and animal hair. Just don't try it on anything too loose-fitting or it could be slurped into the mix.

5

"Brushing" the dog

Want to severely cut down on your allergies? Instead of brushing and then vacuuming up the pile of fur, take the vacuum directly to the dog. It will feel like a nice massage to him. Just so long as he's not one of those dogs already terrified of the vacuum. Then it's just cruel.

6

Making white noise

Need to hush the babies or drown out the raucous neighbors so you can get some rest of your own? Check out this trick! We suggest starting the vacuum further down the hallway until you find a distance that gets the job done without being overwhelming.

7

Teaching science

Whether you homeschool or are just looking for some educational fun, the vacuum is a great way to teach the kiddos about airflow and movement. This tutorial will help you prepare.

8

Making an airgun... for fun

Ready for family fun day? We suggest putting together this awesome vacuum-powered airgun. It's perfect for shooting light, soft things at each other.

9

Taking your baby for a walk

Like so...

10

Blow drying your hair

We're not sure in what universe you'd have a vacuum and not a blow dryer. But, if you're ever in a pinch: Put a clean bag in your vac, put it on reverse and go to town on your hair. (Maybe just give it a few seconds to puff out any settled in dust, first)

11

Flirting with the hubby

Next time he treads through your freshly vacuumed living room, instead of scolding him, give him a hickey by locking that hose attachment onto a butt cheek for a second. That'll teach 'im... and earn you your favorite grin.

See, y'all? Vacuuming doesn't have to be a beast. You just have to know how to use it to your advantage.

Ugh. Not ready to spend another evening in front of the sink or another weekend in rubber gloves? Let us uncomplicate your to-do list.

Simplify chore day

Washing

Yes, it takes care of dinner dishes, but you can throw more than a few plates into a dishwasher. After a day at the beach, you can clean out your kid's plastic toys. If your shower curtain is looking a little mildewy, wash it with a low food-residue load. If you're not grossed out, you can clean your dustpan and small waste bins in there, too. If you're feeling really adventurous (and maybe a little bit reckless), you could wash your computer keyboard, or even cook yourself a salmon dinner while you finish up the rest of your chores.

Dusting

If you're still dusting every week, forget about it. Use the hose attachment on your vacuum and go over the blinds, surfaces, and nick nacks (at least the ones that won't get sucked away). While you're at it, as long as Fido is good-natured around a Hoover, give him a good vacuum -- it saves you the need to brush.

Laundry

Who owns an iron anymore? Toss your wrinkled shirts in with a damp cloth for a few minutes and voila, freshly pressed slacks. If your pillows look depressed, a few clean tennis balls will put the fluff back into down pillows and blankets.

Scrubbing

Cut down your scrubbing time by soaking these items for a few minutes — or even overnight, before trying to wipe them clean.

  • Scorched pans — You might still need to scrub later, but if you pre-soak in hot water for a couple hours, it'll be easier and quicker.
  • Cast Iron — Scrubbing your cast iron skillet will remove the flavor... which is the whole point.

Cleaning the floors

It's not as hard as you think to keep your floors presentable. For wood floors, you don't have to scrub on your hands and knees like grandma did. The Hoover FloorMate Deluxe will do a much better job than even elbow grease. And, when someone is coming over, it's perfectly normal to just hit the most noticeable parts of the carpet.

We know all you clean freaks are fuming. If you have the time or overwhelming desire to take your cleaning to the next level every weekend, then more power to you. For those of us who are happy with slightly better than "good enough," these tips might just be a lifesaver.

Cleaning hacks ladies should steal from men

We're not going to call our guys lazy. It takes a lot of thought to come up with some of these cleaning hacks. We'll just say that guys are great at coming up with the easiest and fastest ways to get things done.

dudes know what they're doing

Boys know how to get life's little chores done so they can get on to bigger and better things. You know, like watching the game and getting hot wing sauce all over themselves. How do they whiz through their chores? By knowing shortcuts like these.

In the kitchen:

Microwaves are gross, especially when it belongs to a dude. But try microwaving a bowl filled with a cup of water for five minutes. The sludge slides right off -- even those awful frozen dinner explosions.
Years of muscle-building protein shakes taught guys the importance of an easy blender fix. After your smoothie, fill the blender back up with soap and water, put the lid back on and turn it on again. All you've gotta do is rinse and it's ready for next time.
Scary but awesome: Lemonade Kool-aid in the dishwasher will eat away lime and hard water stains.
Line your George Foreman grill with foil before you use it. When you're done, you can toss the foil and keep your Foreman clean.
Dirty dishes in the sink and a hottie on the way over? That's what ovens are for! (Right?) Stick all the dirty dishes in there and just order out... just forget about them or the next time you go to preheat you're in for a nasty smell.

Use a window squeegee to remove pet hair from rugs and furniture. Or forget Fido and buy a lizard.

Tape a stick of deodorant near the heating or air conditioning vent. A scent Glade would kill for.
Wear those weird, extra-fuzzy chenille socks around on your tile and hardwood. They pick up dust and dirt. Bonus: Slather your feet in moisturizer before you put the socks on and treat yourself to the softest soles of your life.
Use the sticky part of Post-Its to clean out crumbs from between keys on your keyboard. And then wipe it down with some bleach. Because that thing is disgusting.

Finally...

The biggest hack you can learn from men is that your friends should love you always, even if your sink is full of dishes or there are seven pizza boxes by your door that you keep meaning to take out for recycling. But you probably should clean your microwave.

White vinegar and cleaning supplies

Oh, who are we kidding? Vinegar is totally a miracle substance. In most of these instances, vinegar will still do a fine job at cleaning... it's just harmful in other ways.

Maybe it's not such
a miracle after all

All hail vinegar! One of the safest and most natural cleaning products around, vinegar can do all kinds of things from disinfect to remove stains. There are some instances where vinegar can do more harm than good, though.

1

Electronic screens

Vinegar will eat away at the protective coating on the screens for computers, TVs, phones, etc. Your best bet is to invest in a microfiber towel or a screen genie ball. For particularly tough spots: Try warm water. And always make sure your device is off.

2

Marble/stone

Be careful! We spend thousands of dollars on marble and natural stone countertops in our kitchen, and vinegar is a kitchen staple. But, if used as a cleaning agent on that precious stone, it can corrode and cause pits or potholes over time.

3

Grease

Vinegar can cut through a lot, but it when used on a greasy pot or pan, it just mixes in with the mess. You'll need an alkaline-infused product to cut through the grease. Good news: That's what they make dish soap for.

4

Cast iron pots

Never put vinegar in a cast iron skillet! Will it clean that bad boy? Yes. But, the whole idea of a cast iron pot or skillet is that it absorbs the flavors of whatever you make in it. Just use water and elbow grease.

5

On healthy/wanted
plants

Yes, vinegar is a great natural way to cut down on insects and weeds, but it can also harm a lot of plants. Make sure to target your vinegar spray specifically to the weeds. To cut back on critters in the garden: Plant marigolds.

6

To protect against salmonella

While vinegar is a fairly useful disinfectant and will clean away a simple flu virus, it won't kill many types of salmonella. In other words, cutting boards should be scrubbed with hot water and soap first. Then use a commercial disinfectant.

7

Waxed surfaces

Whatever you do, don't use vinegar on any waxed woods. The vinegar will eat through the wax, those leaving the wood dry and dull (and, eventually, brittle). For waxed tile floors, you can use vinegar, as long as it's your plan to remove the wax and start over again. (Which, let's face it, is sometimes a necessity.)

8

With bleach

Mixing bleach and vinegar is extremely toxic. Together the two actually make a chemical once used to clear out trenches during the war. It's nasty stuff for people and the environment. Do not ever make a bleach and vinegar cocktail. Please.

9

Dishwashers or washing machines

... or any other appliances with rubber hoses. Over time, the vinegar will dry out the hoses, making them brittle and more susceptible to breaking or rotting. (Note: We just noticed that our automatic tea maker suggests cleaning with vinegar. While it's possible the hoses aren't rubber, it's more likely that they're just keen on us needing to eventually replace it with the newer model.)

As far as we know, all other instances of vinegar use are fair game. So, have fun cleaning!

Woman doing housework

Family means team

Donloyn LeDuff Gadson, a writer, wife and mom of eight in Charleston, South Carolina, says, "My husband and children would love to think that I am the one responsible for all of the cleaning; however, family means team. With a family this large, it has to be a group effort. I didn't create the mess alone — I will not clean it alone. That being said, sometimes they need a little 'motivation,' i.e. hollering! It's all hands on deck, for me. Even the little ones can pitch in. My 4-year-old twin girls fold clothes like a boss!"

How to get your kids to help with the housework >>

She also admits to having "no idea" how often she really cleans but adds, "With the constant hustle-and-bustle that comes with life in a household of 10, it is difficult to carve out time to devote to full-on housecleaning mode. We clean in chunks, so it's a continuous thing. Plus, I find it's easier to keep things relatively neat as you go. So when you do have time for full house deep-cleaning days, it's not as bad."

Forget the mess

Carrie Le Chevallier works full-time (half outside the home and half telecommuting) and she and her husband have five adopted kids between the ages of 22 months and 7 years old. The Garner, North Carolina couple is "supposed to pitch in equally for cleaning our house, but wouldn't you know it, it ends up being about 80-20, with most of the cleaning landing in my lap," Le Chevallier admits.

She reveals that she tries to do a little cleaning daily, and usually "bangs out more" come the weekends. She adds, however, "if we have something to do, I always choose that over staying home and cleaning; the mess will be there, the kids are only little once. Make memories, forget about the mess."

Clean house battle cry

Self-admitted "domestically-challenged homeschool mom of three kiddos" Genevieve West, who works from home as a relationship consultant, author and marketing expert for her and her husband's liquid nitrogen ice cream business in Portland, Oregon, says, "Unfortunately for my husband, it just makes sense that the bulk of the chores would fall on me and kids, since we're home all day... which means the only time our house is actually clean is when we're expecting company. And then it's all hands on deck for the mad scramble to hide and clean everything. Our cleaning battle cry is, 'We don't want people knowing we actually live the way we live!'"

10 Ways to clean faster >>

Multi-tasking queen

"With a husband who doesn't cook or clean, two kids (2 and 5), and two dogs, I've got a lot going on."

Jacqueline Fisch is a full-time working mom in a busy consulting firm in Chicago, Illinois who recently launched her startup coaching business. She says, "With a husband who doesn't cook or clean, two kids (2 and 5), and two dogs, I've got a lot going on."

She admits that having guests over is her main motivator for cleaning. "Otherwise, I'm an expert at 'piling' — arranging messes into tidy piles, or filing them away to give the impression and feeling of clean."

She adds, "As an aspiring minimalist, my family of four keeps a relatively small space, so there isn't a lot of room for clutter. Less clutter, less toys means less mess, meaning less to clean." Bathrooms get attention once a month or so, same with the kitchens."

She multi-tasks her efforts — wiping down kitchen appliances while waiting for pasta to cook, or wiping down the bathroom sink after using it and keeping a squeegee in the shower to remove water spots before they happen after every shower.

Let it go

Full-time working mom and handmaker Jean Kake admits, "I hate to clean! With two boys (14 and 21), it seems like as soon as I clean something, it needs to be done again. Turns out I can overlook a dirty floor or piles of laundry and focus on work. Around the time I turned 30, I decided to let go of the quest for perfection, and I'm a happier mom and person for it. Yes, there may be dishes in the sink, but I'm OK with it most of the time — unless my mother-in-law is coming by. I'd rather develop a new idea, watch TV with my sons or go thrift store shopping than worry about dirty dishes. Life's too short."

Clean like a pro

Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time to deep clean the house. Cast off your fear of the hard stuff. With a little help from the pros, you can DIY yourself to a happy house.

1

Get after the grout:

Because grout is porous, it easily absorbs stains, mildew and dirt. Instead of hiring help, try spending a little bit of money on some professional-grade tools and do it yourself. Grout is sensitive to cleaning solutions, so it is important to use the mildest solution possible. Bob Vila recommends starting with warm water and a stiff-bristled brush, like this one from Home Depot ($3). If the warm water solution doesn’t cut it, stronger options include things like baking soda, vinegar, and oxygen bleach. For three bucks and a bit of elbow grease, DIY-ing is a good option.

2

Dust the drapes:

Instead of spending money on cleaning service, check out these easy ways to deep clean dusty drapes on your own. If curtains are machine-washable, put them on a cold gentle cycle and then dry them on delicate. Take them out before they are completely dry and hang them back up to finish. If yours are not machine-washable, you have the option to steam clean, wipe them down with a damp cloth or use a lint roller to collect the dust.

3

Clean the carpets:

Instead of hiring out for clean carpets, spring for this (very affordable) Hoover Dual Power Carpet Washer ($99). You will be able to do your annual deep clean as well as spot clean the high-traffic areas more often. What is the best part you ask? The carpet washer costs as much as having a company do one room. Totally worth it. One tip from the pros at Hoover is to be sure to rinse your carpet after washing to avoid any build-up of cleaning solution which can attract dirt. Smart.

4

Wash the windows:

scrubber and squeegee

Washing windows can seem tricky if you are using the old spray-and-wipe method. Instead, take some tips from the pros and invest in a professional-style scrubber and squeegee combination tool ($12) and a microfiber cloth. Watch a few tutorials and go for it. It really is easier than you might think to get streak-free windows. Simply dunk your scrubber in warm soapy water, wet the window and then squeegee in a horizontal pattern. Once you finish the window, wipe the excess water from the edges with your cloth and you are done. Your windows will be clean and streak-free.

5

De-gunk the gutters:

super nozzle

Go for wife-of-the-year in 2014 and try your hand at cleaning your gutters yourself. Put on your gloves, dust mask and safety glasses and check out the instructional from Bob Vila. Start by scooping the gunk into a garbage bag. Then, when most of the debris has been removed, carefully spray out the gutter (spraying toward the downspout) with a super nozzle, like this one (Home Depot, $11). You will be proud of your DIY skills after this one, trust me.

1

Soak (two minutes working time)

Start soaking hard-to-clean items now to save you some scrubbing later.

Soak stovetop grates

Get your gas stove grates de-greased by exposing them to ammonia. Simply place the grates in a large zip-lock bag with about 1/4 cup of the smelly stuff and seal. Place the ziplock in a garbage bag for extra protection and set outside overnight. The ammonia fumes break up the nasty buildup, making it easy to wipe clean. Make sure to wear gloves and rinse the grates after wiping them down.

Soak pans

If you have pans or casserole dishes that have food concrete stuck to the edges, do not fear. Fill the offending dish with warm water and drop in a dryer sheet. Let that puppy soak overnight, and by morning the gunk will easily wipe away.

"Soak" the microwave

For your messy microwave, try a quick steam soak. Simply fill a microwavable bowl with 1-2 cups of water and add 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar, then microwave for five minutes. The solution will steam and work the stuck-on grime loose for easy cleaning.

2

Declutter (three minutes working time)

This step is key, and sets you up for success or failure for the rest of your working time. Make sure you really get everything tidy in this step.

  • Dishes are washed and put away
  • All appliances (toaster, blender etc.) that are not in use are stored and off the counter
  • Mail is put away/recycled
  • Kids' toys are put where they belong
3

Wipe down (five minutes working time)

Wipe down grates, pans and the microwave: All those things that were soaking are now ready for a wipe down.

Wipe down the fridge

Ever heard of lining the shelves in your fridge? If you haven’t tried it, check this out. It'll save you a ton of time and trouble, and pretty much eliminates the need for major fridge wipe-downs.

Wipe down the counters and cabinets

Use a mild cleaning spray on the countertops and cabinets. Wipe them with a microfiber cloth or sponge.

4

Sweep and mop (five minutes working time)

Some of the crumbs you wipe from counters and other surfaces will probably end up on the floor, so save the floors for last. Try using a vacuum instead of a broom — the attachment works wonders in tricky corners and under cabinets. For an added shine, finish your floors with a steam mop.

5

Add something fun

Light a candle or put out some fresh flowers after a good clean. It adds an extra sense of calm and is a simple and pretty reward for your 15 minutes of hard work!

6 Things that instantly make your house look cleaner

We’ve all been there. Someone’s coming to visit, and the house is a wreck. There’s no time for a deep clean, but you can make it look like you’ve been keeping up with your chores. Use these sneaky tips to make your home look cleaner in an instant.

1

Clear the entryway

You want a place for your guests to hang their coats, right? Gather the coats, shoes and bags that tend to accumulate in that area, and move it all to a bedroom or closet.

2

Sweep high traffic areas

There’s just no time to sweep or vacuum your whole house, but do a quick once-over to high traffic areas, like the entryway, main hallways and living room — places you know your guests will see. Use a cordless vacuum like Hoover's Air Cordless to quickly move from room to room.

3

Curb the clutter

Piled-up junk makes your house look worse than it is. If you don't have time to put everything in its place, just fill a laundry basket with everything that’s not where it belongs. Store it in a closet or the basement until your guests go home.

4

Make the beds

Making the bed is the easiest way to make your bedroom look neat and tidy. Throw the covers up over yours, and send the kids to take care of their own. While you’re there, pick up any dirty clothes and toss them into a closet or hamper. Mission accomplished.

5

Empty your kitchen sink

Nothing says “I’m a housekeeping slacker” like a mile-high pile of dirty dishes. Patrick Flynn, CEO of Wicked Clean, says you should clear out the kitchen sink to instantly give your kitchen a cleaner feel. Do you have a dishwasher? Throw all those dirty dishes in there and shut the door. No one will be the wiser.

6

Remember the bathrooms

Drop some toilet cleaner in the water, and while you wait for that to work its magic, get to work on the rest of the room. Wipe down the sink and toilet surfaces, sweep the rugs (just shake them outside if you’re really pressed for time), and close the shower curtain. Are there wet towels or dirty laundry littering the room? Toss them behind the shower curtain — we promise not to tell. Swish the toilet with a cleaning brush and you’re done.

Quick tip:

Debra Johnson, home cleaning expert and training manager for Merry Maids, says it’s important to pay attention to high-traffic areas when preparing for company. “Spruce up high-traffic areas such as entryways, kitchens and guest bathrooms… Walk the path your guests will take to enter your home and make sure things are presented the way you want — look for cobwebs, hair from pets and other quick cleanups.”

10 Things you can get away with cleaning once a year

Woman stresssed from over cleaning

Are these cleaning chores on your to-do list every month or so? If your answer is yes, you're wasting your time. Once a year is all you need to keep up on these items. Spend less time cleaning, more time playing.

Clean less, stress less

If you think your cleaning list is a bit too long, you're probably right. In fact, there are several items we bet you're cleaning way more often than you need to.

1

Under your furniture

Do you move your couch out of the way every single time you run your vacuum? You're spending too much time (and strength) on that simple chore. Vacuum under furniture once a year and no more — who sees under there, anyway?

2

Your window treatments

Trust us, no one is checking out the very tops of your window treatments, so you shouldn't, either. If the dust up there seems noticeable, just take them down and toss them in the dryer. It takes way less effort than washing them and won't require an ironing session afterward.

3

Your windows

No need to go out and scrub your windows once a month when the weather is warm. Check it off your list every spring when you wash away the winter residue and forget about until next year.

4

Your walls

Washing your walls is a time-consuming chore, and it's really not needed that often (if ever). Spot clean with a rag and hot soapy water when you see a problem area, but leave the big job for once a year.

5

Your carpets

Unless you have a pet (or child) with potty-training issues, there's no need to deep clean your carpets more than once a year. Invest in an at-home shampooer for spot cleaning as needed, but make the steam cleans an annual task.

6

Your closets

We get it. You adore that closet full of clothes and shoes, and you want it be just so. Fine. But do you really need to spend that much time cleaning out your closets? You do close the door, after all. Take a little extra time when you put things away, and save the major clean-outs for once a year, or at least bi-annually, during big season changes.

7

Your light fixtures

Let's face it, lady. Those light fixtures don't get that dirty. Clean fan blades every now and then with a vacuum extension, but leave the fixtures up where they belong. A yearly run through the dishwasher is more than enough.

8

Under your appliances

Who has the muscle power to move out appliances each time you clean, anyway? Does dirt accumulate under your stove? Yep. Does anyone ever look there? Um, no. Get the visible dirt that's right up front with a vacuum attachment, and walk away.

9

Your cabinets and pantry

Nobody's cabinets or pantries look as perfectly organized as the ones you see on Pinterest. Unless your kitchen uses an open shelving system, there's no reason to clean them out more than once a year.

10

Your garage

Perfectly arranged garages tend to last less than a week, so don't waste a day trying to make it look exactly right. You have to have someplace to shove all the stuff you don't want in your house, right? Do a purge once a year and call it a day.

Erica and Chad

Chad and Erica were friends in high school before Chad proposed to Erica in a snowstorm on Mammoth Mountain. They don't have any kids yet, but they do have a 2-year-old dog named Piper.

They bought their house in 2012 from the original owners who had been in the house for 50 years. Erica says the living room is central to their main dream for the house, which is for it to be a place where family and friends are comfortable visiting.

The house is definitely a work in progress, and the living room had been neglected. They've been bogged down by other major projects in the house, with tasks ranging from ripping up the floors, redoing the kitchen and even knocking down a wall that had a built-in fish tank.

They're excited for someone to give their living room a little love and finally have a space for loved ones to hang out.

Gone Girl trailer: Is Ben Affleck a killer?

David Fincher's Gone Girl trailer is here and it shows the film being just as mysterious as the novel of the same name, and may end up with Ben Affleck as a killer — or it may not.

The new preview is full of haunting scenes and hardly any dialogue, but it surely sets the mood for the mystery thriller. Showing Affleck as Nick Dunne mourning the disappearance of his wife Amy on their fifth wedding anniversary, the trailer slowly changes scenery when Nick begins to look like a suspect.

Ben Affleck getting buff to play Batman >>

The clip begins with a devastated Nick pleading with the community to help him find Amy. Flashing scenes show people holding candlelight vigils, actively searching for Nick's wife in fields and Nick walking around his home in a daze, seeing visions of Amy everywhere.

But, things quickly take an odd turn when scenes of Nick and Amy fighting begin filling the screen and he is being questioned by authorities on his possible connection to her disappearance. Investigators are shown taking evidence from his home, Nick evades the public and then is interviewed by the media.

Ben Affleck noticeably absent from Academy Awards >>

The ending of the clip features Amy underwater and seemingly dead as Nick tells a reporter, "I did not kill my wife. I am not a murderer."

The whole trailer is set to Charles Aznavour's song "She," which is covered by The Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler and perfectly fits the mood of the film's eerie preview.

Gone Girl is adapted by David Fincher, who apparently worked with the novel's author and former EW writer Gillian Flynn to change the story slightly for the screen version.

Ben Affleck: Jennifer Garner built my career >>

"There was something thrilling about taking this piece of work that I'd spent about two years painstakingly putting together with all its eight million LEGO pieces," Flynn said recently. "And take a hammer to it and bash it apart and reassemble it into a movie."
