  3. Once a boil is reached, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover. Allow to cook for about five minutes.
  4. Add the shrimp to the mixture, and cook for about three to five minutes or until the shrimp turn pink.
  5. Remove the bay leaf and turn off the heat. Add the cooked rice to the mixture and stir well to combine.

Serve up this tasty dish for a gluten-free Friday meal!

Tom Hanks is so, so sorry for dropping the 'F bomb' on GMA

Tom Hanks is the consummate professional, but all bets are off when he gets into character.

Tom Hanks is known as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood — he tried to give us $20 at The Emmys, after all — but all bets are off when he gets into character. The Oscar winner stopped by Good Morning America on Friday to promote his upcoming epic, Cloud Atlas. Host Elizabeth Vargas asked him to speak in the accent of one of his characters — and that's when things got dicey!

Tom Hanks loses his pooch >>

"Most of it is swear words," he warned Vargas before launching into the thick accent.

"I want people to f*****g...," he said, before realizing his error. Hanks then put his hand over his mouth and apologized.

"Man oh man, I'm sorry," Hanks said. "I have never done that before. I want to apologize to the kids in America that are watching this right now, and let me say, next time on the show, there will be a seven-second delay."

Tom Hanks joins Bill Murray in the awesome actors club >>

ABC later released a statement saying that yes, it's edited out of future broadcasts.

"This morning Tom Hanks accidently used an expletive during a live interview on GMA with Elizabeth Vargas. They both immediately apologized on air, and the show was corrected for all the subsequent feeds."

Larry Crowne actors admit: Tom Hanks is 'magical' >>

Hanks really, really felt bad about it.

"WHAT DID I JUST SAY??? Oops! In character! Sorry! Hanx," he tweeted after the appearance.

Cloud Atlas is the film adaptation of author David Mitchell's 2004 book by the same name. Co-starring Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and Jim Sturgess, the film takes on six different stories — each requiring the stars to take on several different characters. It'll open in theaters on Oct. 26.

Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel's journey to the altar

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake are finally hitched! Their nuptials inspired us to take a long look back at their relationship — which hasn't always been so happy.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake: The history of their relationship

It's finally official: Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel tied the knot this week in an intimate ceremony near Puglia, Italy.

"It's great to be married, the ceremony was beautiful and it was so special to be surrounded by our family and friends," they said in a statement to People.

Timberlake popped the question over the 2011 holiday in Big Sky, Montana. The pair tried to keep it under wraps, but JT's grandma spilled the beans to RadarOnline.

"Yes, Justin is engaged," Sadie Bomar told the website in January. "Jessica is a very sweet girl, she's upright and everything and we love her. She's a wonderful campaigner for the environment, and Justin is, too. A fine young man. Jessica will be a lovely member of the family."

Their relationship wasn't always so storybook perfect, though. Let's take a jaunt down memory lane, shall we?

Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel: Their road to the altar, in photos >>

"Good" beginnings

Timberlake was fresh off the heels of his four-year relationship with actress Cameron Diaz when he was spotted getting chummy with Biel at a January 2007 Golden Globes after party.

The interaction reportedly angered Diaz, but that didn't deter the pair from taking their budding relationship to the slopes. The pair was spotted snowboarding in Park City, Utah, later that month. Sources insisted they were just friends, though.

"He's trying to have a good time," the source said.

Apparently, that "good time" turned into serious business quickly. Biel soon accompanied Timberlake as he embarked on the European leg of his tour. They were spotted at a soccer game in Manchester, England, and later in Amsterdam and Sweden.

Apparently, feelings were getting pretty strong at that point.

"Justin's in love," a source said in May 2007. "She's the coolest chick ever. He wants to be with her all the time. He's ready to be serious."

He gushed about Biel in an interview with Oprah Winfrey later that same year, though he declined to name her.

"I get pretty romantic around her," he told Oprah. "But all I can tell you is, she smells lovely."

He later denied to Jay Leno that they were engaged, though Biel was more than willing to talk about marriage — rhetorically, of course.

"You know, the actual idea of signing those papers and doing all this stuff about it, I've never been someone who's like, 'I have to, have to, have to have it,'" Biel told Harper's Bazaar in the August 2008 issue. "But the idea of being with somebody I care about, who's my soul mate, that sounds groovy."

Jessica Biel is finally showing off her engagement ring >>

Did Justin cheat?

Their relationship wasn't always kittens and roses, though. The pair broke off the relationship in fall 2010, amid rumors that Timberlake had cheated on Biel with Olivia Munn and his Friends With Benefits co-star Mila Kunis. Friends of both actresses denied anything happened.

"There is no truth to the reports. Olivia Munn is not that type of girl," a source told People in October 2010.

The real reason for the breakup? Sources insisted the relationship had just run its course.

"Their entire relationship, once they got past the honeymoon stage, was a roller coaster of ups and downs," the friend told People. "Justin always gets accused of being associated with practically every female that he has worked with, and there's no truth to it. He has never cheated on her."

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

Both seemed to move on from the relationship without a hitch... or so we thought. Timberlake showed he still had big feelings for Biel during a June 2011 interview with Vanity Fair.

"She is the single-handedly most significant person in my life," he said. "In my 30 years, she is the most special person, OK?... I don't want to say much more, because I have to protect things that are dear to me — for instance, her."

They were later spotted canoodling everywhere from Las Vegas to Colorado. However, both sides denied their relationship was back on.

"A girl doesn't kiss and tell," she told Elle when asked about their status.

Wedded bliss

The rumor mill has been working overtime since the pair announced their engagement. They were allegedly going to marry in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in September, though the weekend went off without word of a wedding.

What did happen that month? It was Timberlake's bachelor party in Las Vegas. He seemed more than ready to kiss his single days goodbye, though.

"She's a really, really, really special person," he told reporters in September. "Plus, she's really, really hot!"

Behind the scenes: Breaking Dawn — Part 2

SheKnows has tracked down a behind-the-scenes clip to tide over Twi-Hard fans 'til the new movie drops in a few weeks.

If dogs are a man's best friends, then werewolves must be a vampire's.

Despite their shaky past, the Cullens have to call in backup from their four-legged neighbors, as well as the world of vampire clans, when the Volturi targets young Renesmee, setting the stage for a cataclysmic showdown hitting theaters Nov. 16.

You already know all of this, though. The books are probably on repeat in your mind as you count the hours, waiting to see all the action come to life on the big screen once and for all.

So let me bring something new to the table.

That's right. What if I could tell you I managed to snag a sneak peek, complete with footage from the film and some behind-the-scenes insight from all your favorite, fanged stars?

Sure, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson might not be so timelessy in love off stage these days, but everything looks solid in the world of Twilight.

At least you've got that. As if being a part of a huge motion picture adventure weren't rad enough, how awesome do those zip lines look?

Enough of my rambling. I won't stall this anymore. Check out the clip below, and enjoy a few moments behind red eyes.

Another celebrity gets hitched! This time, it's Clueless star Elisa Donovan who wed longtime beau Charlie Bigelow last week in Northern California.

ElisaDonovanWedding

Weddings are on everyone's mind in Hollywood these days. Earlier today, it was announced that Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel had tied the knot. Now, People is exclusively reporting that Clueless star Elisa Donovan married her longtime beau, Charlie Bigelow, on Oct. 13, in Carmel, California.

The couple released an official statement saying, "After meeting three years ago in Sayulita, Mexico, while vacationing with friends, we are thrilled to report that we were married on Oct. 13. We credit Charlie's friend Owen for waving Elisa in from the beach in what would be the moment that changed our lives."

The ceremony was attended by 150 guests, including some familiar Hollywood faces like True Blood star Sam Trammel and his girlfriend, Missy Yager. The bride wore a feminine gown designed by Elizabeth Filmore, with Jimmy Choo shoes to complete the ensemble, while the groom was decked out in a Burberry tux.

The entire wedding took place at The Carmel Valley Ranch, where guests dined on an organic meal topped off with wine from a local California vineyard. The newly married couple chose Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" for their first dance to kick off the festivities, but it was Bigelow's dance with his mother to "Bust A Move" by rapper Young MC that brought down the house.

The Sabrina, the Teenage Witch star and her husband have an almost 5-month-old daughter, Scarlett Avery, and they reside in San Francisco, where Bigelow works. Donovan has the ABC Family movie,The Dog Who Saved the Holidays, coming out soon, and she counsels women with eating disorders now that she has overcome her own struggles as a recovering anorexic.

Mat Kearney says Young Love reveals painful life lessons

Mat Kearney took a break from his tour to talk to SheKnows.com about his amazing journey from unknown musician to chart-topping singer-songwriter.

Mat Kearney on tour talks Young Love

Mat Kearney is deeply connected to his music, and his fans appreciate his honesty. His last album, Young Love, reached No. 1 on multiple Billboard charts, including Billboard's Rock, Christian, and Digital charts. The success of the 2011 record was largely fueled by the extremely personal track "Ships in the Night" — the lyrics reveal a heartbreaking story of a painful relationship marred by childhood trauma. In a recent interview with SheKnows.com, Mat Kearney explained the meaning of "Ships in the Night" and his journey to stardom.

The amazing journey to fame

"Yeah I've probably played I don't know how many shows since I started, but yeah, it's been amazing to go from me and my guitar, writing these little songs — I didn't know I'd be singing in front of huge crowds. We played a sold-out show at Red Rocks [Colorado] the other day — that's like bucket-list stuff. I feel incredibly blessed to be doing what I'm doing."

On revealing tough life experiences in his music

"Everything [on Young Love] was real. I had to have bled every lyric about my family or about my new marriage. "Ships in the Night" was a current song on the radio and that one — it took me a long time to write. All of the sudden, I got in this fight with my wife on the way to the airport or something and we weren't talking, and then I called her and we were like making up, and I remember pulling out my laptop and like taking notes on our conversation, like 'What did you say again?' It just turned into a really cool, special song about two people trying to connect, and it's probably one of my favorite songs on the record."

What's next?

"I'm starting to record and write a little bit more. I feel like I'm pregnant, like a month pregnant, so I'm not really talking about it yet... so yeah, there's a new record brewing inside me."

Brace yourselves! Nikita Season 3 is 'very Avengers-like'

After months away, Nikita is back to play. Friday night, The CW airs the season premiere aptly titled "3.0." A change is coming for the heroine, her team and, most importantly, Division.

Nikita

Tonight, everyone's favorite vigilante is back. Nikita returns for another season of nonstop drama and action. This year, the tables have turned, and the superspy's no longer on the run.

A lot has changed since the spring finale. After dismantling Division, Ryan took over the reins and is attempting to rehabilitate the agency. Percy's dead and Amanda's in hiding, which means two of Nikita's biggest threats are out of the picture — for now. So what's the game plan for Season 3?

Nikita's no longer a lone ranger. She has people she can trust who are dedicated to her cause. It'll make for a new dynamic.

According to creator Craig Silverstein as reported by TV Guide, "This season's theme is 'family. They've got their home now, and ... it's about seeing that family grow strong and start to fracture. It's very Avengers-like that way."

What an interesting comparison to make. They really are like a superhero team. Each member of the group brings something to the table. Following the events of the finale, they've become a well-oiled machine. One of the biggest changes we're looking forward to is the addition of Devon Sawa to the cast. After appearing in a handful of episodes, he's finally a series regular.

Sawa's character, Owen, will be back, but he isn't happy about their new Division alliance.

"He finds out that they've taken over Division and he doesn't think that's a good idea at all," Silverstein revealed. "There's some conflict with Nikita about that."

We can't wait to see it all play out!

Nikita premieres Friday, Oct. 19, at 9/8c on The CW.

JT breakup was the beginning of Britney's downward spiral

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were always the topic of conversation when they were together, but both have moved on since they broke up a decade ago. Today in court, Spears' attorney said Timberlake was the start of her breakdown, leading to a shaved head.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears' career, and life, has been a roller-coaster ride since she jumped into show business as a child. When she was dating 'N Sync member Justin Timberlake as a teen, she seemed to be at the top of the world. Even though they broke up a decade ago, with Timberlake's wedding Friday to Jessica Biel, Spears is bound to be thinking about her ex.

This week, the singer has been involved in a trial with her former manager, who has been sharing a lot about Spears, including her breakdown in 2008. A lawyer for Spears today spoke about what started the progressively deteriorating mental state that ended in a breakdown. He said it started the moment Timberlake and Spears broke up. In his opening statement, he said the breakup "left Britney depressed and angry, the beginning of a downward spiral that included impulsively marrying a childhood friend in Las Vegas and drug use," according to E! News.

"This is a story of a close family, but not a perfect one," attorney Leon Gladstone said, after Sam Lufti alleged yesterday that Spears' breakdown had more to do with her being on drugs than anything else.

Timberlake and Spears met when they were just kids and Mouseketeers. Spears' attorney is saying that the breakup with Timberlake started Spears' problems. He also spoke about why her dad finally forced her into rehab.

"You are going to kill yourself or one of your kids," her dad told her when he first sent her to rehab.

“Britney flew to Antigua for treatment, but flew right back," said E! News. "Then she checked into Promises, but left after a day, prompting [then ex-husband Kevin] Federline to start proceedings to get permanent full custody of the boys. Finally, she returned to Promises for a full month, but when she left at the end of February 2007, she wasn't talking to Jamie and Lynne, Gladstone said."

But it looks like both parts of the former couple have grown up and are doing better. Spears is engaged to Jason Trawick and lives with him and her two children, and she is restarting her career. Timberlake is officially starting a new life with his wife Jessica Biel.

Muppet lovers are going to Washington

Muppet lovers protect their own. They are headed to Washington, D.C., for the Million Puppet March, taking place three days before Election Day.

The Muppets

Apparently you don't mess with Big Bird. Or the Muppets. After presidential candidate Mitt Romney mentioned the character in the first presidential debate with President Obama, many have come out fighting, not only for the popular avian character but for the show and network as well. A group will be marching in Washington, D.C., for PBS.

"More than 1,000 puppeteers and public broadcasting supporters have signed on for a march on the National Mall in Washington three days before the election," said the Associated Press. The walk is set for Nov. 3, and already thousands of people have said on Facebook they will be attending.

"It comes after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's remarks during a presidential debate calling for the elimination of funding for PBS," said the AP.

Big Bird has been a long-standing character on Sesame Street, a popular kids show on PBS.

The name of the November event, the "Million Puppet March," is conspicuously missing the name of Sesame Street's puppets . The move could show that PBS is not officially condoning the walk, although the organizers said they changed the name to "to be more inclusive of all puppetkind." The organizers said they will now be able to welcome sock puppets, hand puppets, marionettes, shadow puppets and mascots among others.

During the second presidential debate on Wednesday, Oct. 17, Mitt Romney again made a point that stuck in many people's minds. He said that so he could hire women for his cabinet and staff when he was governor of Massachusetts, a women's group brought him "binders full of women." The puppet march organizers have not mentioned whether the walk will include binders, women dressed as binders, or puppets dressed as binders. But they probably wouldn't mind if you showed up dressed that way.

Taylor Swift's Red is out Monday

$

The singer's newest album is all about those in her past and present, but don't ask her who. That's one thing she likes to keep to herself.

Taylor Swift

At just 22 years old, Taylor Swift seems to have lived more like than many people twice her age. Or at least it seems that way because she shares every thought and emotion with her listeners. On her new album, she'll be doing more of the same. Red, the follow-up to her last album, Speak Now from 2010, will be out on Monday, Oct. 22.

"Red is really kind of diary entries of the last two years of my life," Swift told Reuters. "There were beginnings and ends and there were ups and downs, and lessons that I learned and then had to learn all over again the exact same way... the ups and downs of the whole experience of falling in love and being let down and letting go and starting over."

Based on the first few songs, Red will be as big a hit as her past albums. When the first single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," came out in September, it became the "most-downloaded first week digital single," said Reuters.

The song made fans wonder whom it was written about, since Swift has in the past written songs about her boyfriends — or ex-boyfriends. But she doesn't mind.

"It helps me to know that 90 percent of what those little blog posts and articles say isn't true at all," said Swift. "The one bit of privacy that I have is knowing that I know who inspired those songs and I don't tell anyone."

As someone in the spotlight, she knows she has to live a certain amount of her life in the public eye, but she also knows she doesn't have to share everything — even if she writes these songs about other famous people.

"For me, keeping my private life private and only sharing it with people through my music allows me to have that connection with my fans and not shut them out of anything," she said. "But it allows me to also have something that's just mine."

And the singer is doing just fine. According to Forbes, in 2011 she made an estimated $57 million. Red will be in stores and online starting Monday.

Madonna used guns in her Denver show

$

The singer has been using the images her entire tour, but apparently she didn't think about how insensitive they might be in a city that suffered 12 shooting deaths just three months ago.

Madonna

Thursday night in Denver, Madonna apparently did not practice what she preaches, no matter how fake it was. The singer reportedly showed a "gun scene" at her show at the Pepsi Center — when guns are still very much on the minds of Denver residents.

"During 'Gang Bang,' Madonna and several dancers dressed in black made their way across the stage, mock-shooting each other," said E! News. "A giant screen simulated splattering blood and falling bodies."

Whether or not it was fake and whether or not she had a point, many felt she could have been more sensitive to the town that lost so many of its own just three months ago in a shooting in a movie theater.

"According to KUSA-TV, the station received several calls Friday from concert-goers saying they were offended she used guns and violence as part of her show in light of recent events in the state that included a mass shooting at a theater during a Batman movie on July 20 that left 12 people dead," said the Associated Press.

However, in true Madonna style, the scene is simply to make a point. Before the tour started, the singer issued a statement saying she does not condone the use of guns.

"She said she is using the guns as symbols of intolerance and 'the pain I have felt from having my heart broken,'" said the AP.

Madonna has received complaints on the entire tour for use of the imagery, but this time it was more personal for an entire city. Madonna recently said the images are supposed to have the opposite effect: to show that many use guns and violence as a sign of power.

According to E! News, she said she wanted to "find a way to stop feelings that I find hurtful or damaging."

The images throughout her tour have also included swastikas.

Canceled: Private Practice is a goner

Private Practice is closing its doors. After six seasons, the medical drama is coming to an end. It looks like the spin-off won't outlive its Grey's Anatomy predecessor after all.

Shonda Rhimes of Private Practice

Creator and writer Shonda Rhimes is shutting down Private Practice. After months of speculation, she's confirmed what we already suspected: This current season will be the last.

Private Practice set to begin perhaps its final season >>

The writing was on the wall. Earlier this year, ABC decided to renew the show for a 13-episode run instead of a full 20-plus. If that wasn't enough, the show's lead, Kate Walsh, was also being written out.

Kate Walsh admits she's leaving Private Practice >>

But don't cry for Rhimes! She still has her hands full with Scandal and Grey's Anatomy. It's hard to believe, though, that Private Practice will end before Grey's considering its a spin-off. Who would have thought?

Friday evening, Rhimes posted a statement online announcing Private Practice's cancellation:

"I'm sad to say that Private Practice's run will end after episode 613 this season. There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line. Creatively, we are all extremely proud of the show and especially proud of this season — which you will all soon discover is a creative renaissance. I can't wait for you to see it.

"It's heartbreaking to end. Truly. I feel so lucky to write for these characters and tell these stories and I truly feel this show has taught me so much as a writer. And there's a family here, of crew and cast, people who have bonded over these past five and a half seasons. It's rare for a show to go for more than 100 episodes and we are incredibly proud to have been such a show. And we're grateful to all of you for spending time with us for an hour every week for the last 6 years. It's meant the world.

"Thank you."

Are you sad to see Private Practice go?

Father of the year Michael Lohan decided to surprise his daughter on Friday. But not quite in the way any daughter would want. He showed up at Lindsay Lohan's house to stage an intervention for the actress.

"I've just left Lindsay's house," he told Celebuzz. "It didn't go well."

The website said that cops were "swarming" Lindsay Lohan's property in an attempt to get him to leave, but he told a TMZ camera operator he wasn't going anywhere.

"I'm just trying to resolve some issues that Lindsay is having," he said. "She is just around all the wrong people."

He said he became worried after she failed to show up to a shoot for her current movie, The Canyons . Lindsay's publicist said part of the confusion came because the actress is also busy promoting her movie Liz & Dick.

Michael Lohan told the cameras that her friends are all "alcoholics" or "drug addicts" and that everyone else around her is worried about her.

"I just want to talk some sense into her and get her some help. That's all we want," he told TMZ. "We want the best for her. We want her to pick up where she left off at Betty Ford."

Lohan's dad did not show up alone. He had a couple other people with him to help, but a man answered the door and said Michael wouldn't be the one to help her solve her problems.

Lindsay Lohan is no stranger to rehab. The actress has been admitted three different times and has been in trouble with the law. She served 480 hours of "community service and therapy sessions" after a 2011 shoplifting arrest.

No, you're prettier: What JT & Jess might fight about

When two people as hot as Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake tie the knot, it's only karmically fair to imagine a few marital spats in their super-hot happily-ever-after. What will they find to fight about? Here are a few predictions.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake at the 2012 Costume Institute GalaNo, no, no... you're the hottest half

What must mornings be like for a couple as beautiful as Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel? We imagine it goes something like this: Jessica rolls out of bed, magically looking every bit of pouty-lipped perfection she did prior to rolling around with JT half the night. She saunters into their glamorous master bath, which is roughly the size of a college dorm. Standing before their dual vanities, they stroke each other's vanities.

"No, really, you're bringing sexy back."

"No, no, no, you already brought sexy back."

You get the picture.

You dry-humped your ex, so I get dibs on the next movie hookup

As a married couple in Hollywood, you have to contend with a unique marital problem: watching your partner make out with other hot entertainers. True, in the real world this counts as adultery and only gets you screen time on Cheaters, but it's totes okay in celebrity circles. After all, it's their "craft."

But surely, even celebrity spouses try to keep their on-screen dalliances in check. Perhaps Justin and Jessica play rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to lock lips with a costar next? However, Jessica has some heavy ammunition in her arsenal to win this argument: Last year, Justin full-on dry-humped his former flame, Cameron Diaz, in Bad Teacher. That should earn JT's new wifey a hot co-star hookup or two before he even thinks about puckering up again professionally.

You'll never get an a** like mine with squats like that

Jessica is known for rockin' an athletic physique, and this sporty chick doesn't mess around when it comes to getting ready for a role. For Blade: Trinity, the brawny beauty hit the gym six days a week for a few hours at a time prior to filming and then followed up with an hour of fight training, an hour of archery and a strict diet throughout filming. There is one physical asset in particular, though, that the star is known for busting her butt for — literally. Whether she's in the streets or at the gym, Biel frequently breaks out in squats to perfect that booty of hers. Justin, we're not implying she could kick your a**... oh, wait, yes we are. Her a** alone could kick your a**. Here's hoping you don't bring any weak mess into the gym when you two are working out á deux.

Just once, I'd like to sing the high parts

Have you ever been driving down the interstate only to get stuck in traffic beside some wahoo in the throes of a passionate radio sing-along? There's no mistaking the trademark mouth-agape, thumbs-drumming-the-steering-wheel style of a karaoke commuter. It seems like a certainty that the musically inclined JT and Jess partake to some degree in such musical shenanigans when on the road. Where we imagine they hit a speed bump is in divvying up the soprano parts. Jess might want to hit the more feminine high notes, but we all know JT can strike pitches as piercing as though his balls were in a vise grip. But hey, somebody's gotta sing the lower register! We like to think of this spat as playing out like the singing car scene in Step Brothers.

Healthy holiday diet fixes for new moms

The holiday buffets, the eggnog, the parties! The holidays can feel like a diet minefield just waiting to blow up the number on your scale by five, even 10 pounds. Added to the pressure of tasty bites and sweets is kid duty: Now you have the responsibility of making sure your new baby gets fed, bathed and looks adorable for the in-laws. Here are some coping strategies to keep you slim and sane.

Keep calm and hydrated

Visual food cues, as in that plate of gorgeous pastries passed around at the office, can send signals of hunger to your brain. But if we drink plenty of water, we feel more full and satisfied -- we can say no to the temptations. Hot liquids can be comforting, so now is the time to bring out that chamomile and green tea, preferably loose-leaf for potency. Both are soothing and hydrating, and green tea is reputed to boost metabolism. You can’t go wrong!

Hands off the leftovers

It's tempting, but don’t finish off the kids’ plates. It’s an easy habit to get into and you may have grown up with the “don’t waste anything” mentality, but the clean-plate club has its drawbacks. Those extra calories you’re devouring by eating the leftovers plus your own adult meal, can sabotage your weight goals.

Eat more veggies

Don’t underestimate the power of fresh veggies for nutrients and good health. When you’re prepping some pureed squash, carrots or rutabagas for your baby, for example, make extra for yourself. For example, if you’re doing a lot of chopping, chop more and roast them on a cookie sheet in the oven. With some good sea salt, herbs and drizzled olive oil, these vegetables make a great dinner with a quick fish fillet under the broiler. Or have them for lunch and add some feta cheese -- tasty, healthy and easier than you think. Another easy fix is the smoothie -- it’s a kid-pleaser and can be a nutrient powerhouse. Try this energy-boosting smoothie: Combine celery, baby spinach, strawberries or blueberries, almond milk, and honey in a blender and puree.

Me-time is crucial

You may feel like you've got to serve and please everyone, but make time for yourself during the holidays -- for your sanity and to keep your energy level high. Parents, and most often moms, often put themselves second to their kids’ needs and wants. It makes sense at the time, but it can leave you exhausted and grabbing whatever you can from the fridge or cupboard to keep fueled. So even though you may not have had time for a proper dinner, digging into that container of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream at 9 p.m. is not a good choice. The trick is to plan meals, shop wisely and schedule some me-time to relax, fit in exercise and get the rest you need.

Use small plates and avoid second helpings

At parties or gatherings, we really do load up our plates -- and if the plates are bigger, we take more. Using smaller plates can curb our portions so we’re not mindlessly noshing all those extra calories. If you're tempted to ask for seconds or keep the wine flowing to please hosts or family members, a simple compliment can avoid this pitfall: “Thank you, no, but that was delicious.”

Be prepared

Be sure to pack that diaper bag. Whether you’re out on a power shop at the mall or visiting friends and family, always bring your baby’s favorites, along with some energy bars for yourself to avoid the snack urge or the food court signs. Along with the diapers and toys, have baby's drinks and snacks at the ready. When you’re prepared, you’ll be calm, cool and relatively collected.

Recurrent ear infections and daycare

Tammy's nine-month old daughter frequently gets ear infections and the last three occurred in one month. Her doctor advised Tammy to take her daughter out of daycare, where currently she is only there about four hours a week. "I work part-time and need someone to take care of my daughter until my husband gets home," says Tammy. "Is it true that recurrent ear infections may be caused by daycare?" Let's look at the causes of ear infections and see if Tammy should find a non-daycare setting for her daughter.

What is an ear infection?

Otitis media, commonly called a middle ear infection, is an inflammation of your child's inner ear canal . Ear infections most commonly occur when children are between the ages of 6 months to 2 years.

What causes ear infections?

The middle ear is drained by a small tube into the nose. This tube is more likely to become stopped up in children because it is more horizontal , which may lead to an infection. Colds and occasionally allergies may "stop up the drain" even more, and ear infections commonly follow colds. Other factors that seem to cause an increase in ear infections include exposure to cigarette smoke, lack of breastfeeding, use of pacifiers, a history of ear infections in parents or siblings, and, of course, the usual suspect -- daycare.

Daycare and children's health

Children in daycare tend to have more infections of any kind in general, simply because most infections and viruses are spread most easily at this age. Toddlers and infants are touching and handling everything and placing fingers in their mouths, and even with the best hand-washing techniques it is hard to control the spread of infections.

It is hard to predict what effect taking a child out of daycare will have on her getting ear infections. It may help tremendously. On the other hand, if a child is genetically prone to ear infections or continues to be exposed to smoke, for instance, she may continue to get ear infections even when she is removed from daycare.

Talk to your child's pediatrician

Many working parents like Tammy do not have a choice as to whether or not they send their child to daycare. If your child is in daycare and experiencing recurrent ear infections, the decision to withdraw her from this childcare arrangement should be a thoughtful one involving a discussion with your child's pediatrician.

Miley Cyrus kisses Angus T. Jones on Two and a Half Men

The actress made her first appearance on the show Thursday night and ended up getting kissed by one of the characters. But to do so, she had to be reminded to take off her engagement ring.

Miley Cyrus

Thursday night, the world found yet another thing that Miley Cyrus is good at — boosting ratings. The actress/singer appeared on this week's Two and a Half Men, and 13.6 million people tuned in, up 14 percent from last week. The episode showed us that Cyrus is all grown up. It appeared at first as if she was the love interest of Walden, Ashton Kutcher's character, but she ended up kissing Angus T. Jones' character, Jake.

"Cyrus plays Missi , the daughter of one of Walden's old friends," said Entertainment Weekly. "Walden takes her in for a few days when she comes to town to consider moving to Los Angeles, and finds himself both annoyed by and attracted to the loquacious, buxom teen. He thinks the feeling of attraction is mutual until Missi confesses her plans to set him up with her mother."

In fact, Cyrus' character ends up kissing the younger character Jake, rather than Walden. Or rather, he kisses her. Missi and Jake end up on the beach, and she won't stop talking, so he decides to quiet her with a kiss, said EW. But the engaged actress said it's not always easy kissing others on screen.

"The prop guys would always [ask], 'Do you have your [engagement] ring on?' and I'd be like, 'I have to take my ring off to make out with Angus? This is creepy!'" according to Entertainment Weekly.

But her fiance, Liam Hemsworth, doesn't mind. As actors, he said he knows this is part of their careers.

"At this point, we're engaged, like we're forever. I think if I was a girlfriend... I would feel like I need to show my ownership," Cyrus said, adding that in the past she had "turned down scripts because... I don't think any career is worth stressing out the person that you love the most or making them feel hurt."

Cyrus' appearance on the show helped CBS win the ratings war on Thursday night, and she is set to appear on one more episode of Two and a Half Men.

Adele reportedly gives birth to her first child

The singer isn't talking, but reports are saying she gave birth to a baby boy on Friday night.

Adele

It has been only a few months since Adele first announced she was expecting a child with her boyfriend Simon Konecki, back in June. But it looks like only four months later, the singer gave birth on Friday night.

“New reports claim that the 24-year-old singer and partner Simon Konecki welcomed their child on Friday night,” said the UK Daily Mail. “She is said to be 'ecstatic' by the baby's arrival.” But as of now, those reports have not been confirmed, as Adele and her camp are not talking. When asked about the birth, a rep for the singer said, “We are not releasing a statement at this time. No comment.”

She has been shown to be good at keeping secrets, so it could be months before she announced anything, but multiple sources are reporting the birth. Back in June when she announced the pregnancy, Adele wrote on her blog: “I'm delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together. I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we’re over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time. Yours always, Adele xx.”

“Adele and Simon are ecstatic at their new arrival,” a source told the UK Daily Mail. The couple have had a whirlwind romance; they announced their relationship in January . The couple stepped out together in February at the Grammys where the singer won six different awards, including for record, song and album of the year, three of the most coveted Grammy awards.

Adele also recently released Skyfall, the theme song for the movie of the same name, the most current in the James Bond family. “When Adele’s name came up I just jumped at it, I just said, “We have to get her,” star Daniel Craig said in a recent interview, said the UK Daily Mail. “I just thought that she has the voice and she’s got the tone that we wanted.”
