That’s What She Said movie review: Lizzy Borden’s Flying Circus

Life as a single woman in your 40s is difficult, especially for this trio of lusty ladies led by Anne Heche down a spiraling path of loneliness — good thing they have a sense of humor. This indie flick explores the darkly funny side of the feminine mystique.

That's what she said

3 out of 5 stars: Perfect for those who embrace
the raunchy side of femininity

Bebe has a date tonight. So what if it's with a man she doesn’t know too well and that he didn’t actually confirm the date. Bebe likes to view her rose-colored glass as half-full.

Bebe’s best friend and confidante Dee Dee is still reeling from a breakup despite the fact it happened three years ago. She seems to relish obsessing on Dick the Pr**k.

A nymphomaniac stranger named Clementine crashes the pity party and shares TMI about the sex therapist she sees at a free clinic. Bebe is a bleeding heart and wants to befriend the pathetic woman while cynical Dee Dee couldn’t care if Clementine drops dead, especially after Clementine pukes on her in a cab.

As Bebe tries to prepare for her date, she confesses she’s battling a horrid yeast infection, which leads to everyone gleefully suggesting she try yogurt to cure it. Things go from bad to worse for Bebe when she gets an unmanageable haircut and then puts on a yellow dress, saying she looks like, “an incontinent Brillo pad.” Yeah, she kind of does.

That's What She Said is funny, but at the expense of its characters, a type of comedy more typically seen in bromance movies. This movie lets women be as crude as men, elaborating about challenging biology and the hopeless feeling many single women try to deny. Here, all those fears and bad ideas make their way into the lives of these flawed ladies.

Bottom line: It is nice to see a film that stars women of various shapes and sizes who appear to be north of 40. These three woman are all in various stages of heartbreak and hope, and none of it is pretty — though pretty funny.

Hunted premiere: Sneak peek!

Cinemax would like for you to meet Sam Hunter, the main character of its new show, Hunted. She used to be a spy. Until she was slain a year ago. Or so everyone thought.

Hunted's Sam Hunter

Here's the thing about Sam Hunter : She was a spy until someone tried to kill her. She has no idea who set up the attack — it might have been an enemy, but it probably was a friend. She's been "dead" and off the grid for a year, but now she's back and she wants answers.

When she shows up at Byzantium Security International, her former bosses, Deacon Crane and Rupert Keel , are surprised to see her, obviously. However, they let her back onto the team.

Byzantium's clients aren't always the good guys. Oftentimes, the Byzantium operative must work for people who aren't upstanding citizens, and a lot of Byzantium's operatives do things that fall into a sketchy gray area.

Most important, the operatives rarely know anything about the client. In other words, Hunter may have earned herself a lot of enemies. But before she can start tracking them, she has to figure out who they are. Along the way, she'll also work at trying to figure out exactly who runs Byzantium and makes up the rules she must follow.

Like the proverbial cat, will her curiosity get her killed for real this time?

"You don't want to cross Sam," warns her portrayer, Melissa George.

She makes a fair point. Sam is definitely a bada**!

Sam is convinced someone in the agency was behind the attempt on her life. Instead of living her life as a dead woman, she chooses to go back and face her possible enemies until she has a name and a face to put with the gun that nearly killed her.

She may be on the hunt, but you can be sure the person who wanted her dead is after her, again.

Hunted is a Cinemax spy-thriller with filmlike scope and cinematography. It's the story of when Hunter becomes the hunted.

How to parent sensitive kids

$

Every child is different, and parenting a highly sensitive child isn't easy. If your child is especially sensitive, you need to learn to parent a little bit differently to make life easier on her and yourself.

Mom hugging little girl

Step 1: Adjust your behavior

It's easy to tell your son to "man up" or try to make your daughter behave differently. However, the truth of the matter is that some children are just more sensitive than others. Instead of criticizing or trying to change your child's behavior, adjust your own. Love your child unconditionally and accept his sensitivity as you would anything else about him.

Step 2: Figure out his triggers

Does your child get overwhelmed in crowded places? Does he interact better in small groups rather than large ones? If you find your child gets upset, overwhelmed or highly emotional in certain situations, you can often defuse issues before they start. Work with your child to help him feel more safe and secure.

Step 3: Take things slowly

If your child gets distressed over new or different situations, don't thrust her into changes. Instead, take things slowly. Encourage her to try new things without scolding or correcting her behavior if she doesn't take to it right away. You want her to feel more self-confident, not less. So don't push her into a situation where she isn't going to be comfortable.

Step 4: Focus on his strengths

Being sensitive isn't a horrible thing. In fact, it can be beneficial in plenty of situations. If your child is especially sensitive to people's emotions or the feelings of animals, it could eventually be the driving force behind his career choices. Sensitive children might have a better than average imagination, be gifted in certain areas scholastically or empathize when many others don't. Focus on your child's strengths and help him develop strong skills and good habits.

Step 5: Get help if you need it

In some circumstances, your child's sensitivity may be related to sensory processing disorder. Learn about the signs and symptoms of SPD and talk to your pediatrician. Children with SPD general need more routines in their lives. You can also help curb their symptoms, by using a sensory "diet." Seek help from your doctor, occupational therapists and other specialists to help meet your child's needs.

Beauty and the Beast recap: Don't poke the beast

Cat runs into some serious problems when she lets her obsession with her mother's murder take over. Will it be too much for even the beast to take?

Rooftop Renedevous

If there was ever a woman with only one thing on her mind, it is Detective Cat Chandler . This girl just will not let her mother's case go for longer than a sentence. As much as it can be annoying to regular folks, it's really pushing the limits for the already temperamental Beast .

When a genetically altered Beast Man who has a habit of punching walls into cement asks you to leave something alone, I dunno, maybe you should leave it alone. Instead, every spare moment Cat gets, she's running over to his warehouse home, rustling J.T.'s feathers and bringing attention to the existence of Vincent Keller. He's been "dead" for nine years and he'd just really like it to stay that way. But, she is relentless.

She tells him she wants to help him expose Muirfield, but what she really wants is to find out how Muirfield is connected to her mother. Vincent sees right through all of her tactics and continually tells her to go away. And yes, he did get so mad his face did that scary veiny thing. Cat seems to be a pretty good detective, but she's sloppy with a top secret government conspiracy case, and Vincent's afraid she's going to lead the assassins in suits right to his doorstep.

Cat and Vincent Discuss the Case

And, of course, that's what she does. But instead of his doorstep, it's the hood of her car. A man on a bike slams into her car and when she gets out to help him, he shoots at her. He doesn't appear to be highly skilled because he misses and then she beats him up for a bit.

So, at this point, Muirfield seems only mildly concerned with her, and I'm sure they'll send their top-notch hitmen later. The bicyclist was able to knock Cat down, though, and that's when Vincent appears and accidentally kills the guy. Oops.

To protect himself, Vincent moves. He packs up all of his things in the place he called home for nine years and moves to an undisclosed location. Even his best friend, J.T., doesn't know where he is or if he'll ever see him again.

And he's not the only one packing up and moving out. Cat's sister has been crashing at her apartment, but her constant obsession with her mother's case is driving a wedge between them. Her sister would rather move back in with Dad than deal with Cat and the never-ending questions about their mother's death.

When she's not pushing away the people in her life, Cat is solving the murder of a ballerina who was pushed off a roof. During the investigation, she discovers she isn't the only one with an obsession. The handsome janitor was rather infatuated with the victim, so much so that he stalked her and kept her "smoking hot" jeans as a token after she died. Just when Cat thinks she's got this one in the bag it turns out our creepy janitor was at Zumba class working on his dance moves. Instead, the murderer was the ballet director, who had raped the victim.

Once Cat closed her case, she was able to see things a little clearer. She left a four-page apology letter for Vincent explaining how she recognized that she had crossed the line. And she was even able to persuade her sister to stay. She promised she'd put the mess of the past behind her.

Vincent and Cat reunite on a rooftop and he accepts her apology. With the city lights glistening behind them, he tells her he can't stay away from her either. But, they didn't kiss! It was the perfect moment, guys. You know wanted to. Guess we'll have to wait until next week.

Barbecued pork or beef are delicious options when it comes to sandwiches. But why stick with the standard barbecue sauce when you can crank things up a notch and use an Italian tomato sauce?
Great sandwiches from tomato sauce
Tomato sauce beef sandwiches

Tonight's Dinner

Barbecued pork or beef are delicious options when it comes to sandwiches. But why stick with the standard barbecue sauce when you can crank things up a notch and use an Italian tomato sauce?

There's nothing I like more than pulled pork or barbecued beef sandwiches. I love the tanginess of the barbecue sauce. I love how the meat is so tender, it just falls apart. I love how the French rolls soak up the sauce so you don't need any extra condiments.

There are so many reasons I love a good barbecued beef sandwich, I couldn't possibly list them all here. But one thing I'd never considered when it came to these types of sandwiches was using a thick tomato sauce. Yes, I love the sweet tanginess that comes from the barbecue sauce but the tomato sauce filled with all those Italian spices brought the sandwich to a whole new level. It was like a nice piece of French bread dipped in a thick hearty Bolognese, but without all that heavy pasta. It was absolutely delicious, and I can't wait to make it again.

Italian beef sandwiches

Serves 10

Ingredients:

  • 1 boneless beef roast
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon basil
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 2 green bell peppers, sliced
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons of Philadelphia Italian herb and cheese cooking cream
  • 10 sandwich rolls, split and toasted

Directions:

  1. Place the roast in a 5-quart slow cooker. Pour the tomato sauce over the meat. Stir in the cooking cream. Top the roast with the peppers, onions, basil and oregano. Cover and cook on high for five to six hours.
  2. About 30 minutes before the meat is done cooking, transfer the roast to a cutting board and shred with a couple of forks. Return the shredded meat to the slow cooker and cook for 30 more minutes.
  3. Spoon the shredded meat, sweet peppers and onions onto the bottom half of each roll. Spoon some of the tomato sauce over the meat, top with the top half of the roll and serve.

How to be a successful business owner

$

Owning your own business and working for yourself is a dream for many but only a reality to a few. In fact, only about 11 percent of the population owns their own businesses.

Store owner

It's no surprise that successfully running your own business requires a lot of hard work. When you first start out, you could spend every day working for months and months on end. Financially speaking, you may have to keep your full- or part-time job to make ends meet until your business takes off. Do you have what it takes to be a successful business owner?

Get support

Having support from your partner and loved ones is vital. You can't go at it alone and need to have people encouraging and challenging you along the way. This being said, don't expect your partner to be on board right away. Prove to yourself and others that this isn't just a "phase" or "hobby" that's going to fizzle out. It's a lot easier to gain support when you already have an action plan in place. Start your business as part-time work while still keeping your 9-to-5. Save at least three to six months of your salary so you're not financially strapped if things don't go as planned. This will prove to your partner and yourself that you're serious about making this dream a reality.

Make a business plan

All business owners will tell you that having a plan in place is required in order to be successful. Set goals — both long- and short-term. Write out all the costs involved — equipment, supplies, office space, employees, etc. With a plan in place, you're able to set a schedule, manage your time, manage your stress, learn to say "no" and more. Think about it — if you set a goal of losing weight but don't have a plan in place, do you think you will be successful? Probably not. Now imagine if you have that same goal but with a specific daily eating and exercise plan and people to support you. Your success rate has just quadrupled.

Promote, promote, promote

Market your product, your brand and yourself in every way possible. The more people know about you and your product, the more potential buyers you'll have. Make business cards and post them in local stores, hand out fliers, build a website or blog, take advantage of social media, network with those with similar businesses, and talk about your business to anyone and everyone. The biggest mistake potential business owners make is not getting themselves out there, whether because they're afraid or they don't know how. Believe in your business and yourself.

Find a work-life balance

This goes back to making a business plan and setting goals. With the internet, television, kids and chores, it's easy to get distracted and for life to get in the way. Your business falls second to all of life's other responsibilities. If you truly want to own your own business, you can't let this happen. Commit yourself to sticking to your schedule every day. Make sure your schedule includes time to hang out with the family, alone time and time for chores or whatever else it is you need to get done. Remember to ask for help if you need it. Having a work-life balance, a business plan with goals in place and support are all necessities when it comes to running a business. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the ride. After all, if you truly are doing something you love, you should never have to work another day in your life.

The Vampire Diaries recap: Hungry enough to kill

$

Elena's so hungry she could eat a horse, but even that won't satisfy these hunger pangs.

Vampire Diaries

Stefan is on a mission and in complete denial. He knows Elena has to feed to survive, but he doesn't want her to feed on humans and lose her humanity. Damon , on the other hand, would prefer that she go straight for the vein, so they can just get it over with. Elena sides with Stefan and they go hunting for some tasty deer blood.

In the woods with her heightened vampire senses, Elena can't keep her hands off Stefan. Just when it starts to get steamy and we're getting to the good stuff, Elena bails to puke up the animal blood. Just like a lady though, she does it in private and doesn't tell her man.

In town, there's a new vampire hunter, Connor , who is investigating the fire that killed the council members. He forces himself into the Mayor's house and shoots Tyler with specially carved bullets. Tyler is able to get away, but now everyone is on edge, especially with the upcoming funeral for the council members.

When Elena's hunger pangs won't quit, she calls Damon for help and he is more than happy to assist. He allows her to feed from him in a very intimate scene. There was even some hair stroking. It was hot and romantic, and I feel weird about it. Unfortunately, even vampire blood isn't sitting well. She winds up vomiting all over the church's basement bathroom at the funeral. It looked like a scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre in there.

To the rescue again, Damon brings her some non-blood spattered clothes and a bag of blood from the hospital. She takes a swig and immediately spits it out. She can't eat anything and now she's beginning to starve. But, she still refuses to feed on a human.

Stefan catches Damon and Elena together and confronts Damon. The older Salvatore brother seems to get a little too much pleasure out of telling Stefan that Elena fed on him. I don't know exactly what it translates to in vampire culture, but it sure looked like cheating to me.

Trapped at the Funeral

At the funeral, Connor stabs April Young and ties her up on the balcony so that her blood drips down to the floor. He sets up his rifle and just waits for one of those bloodsuckers to make a move. Luckily, they are aware it's a trap. But, poor Elena is losing her mind and has to be held back from running after the blood. So, Matt lets Elena feed from his neck and makes it look like she's crying into his shoulder. Way to give back after she saved your life, Matt.

Tyler goes to the podium and takes a bullet for the team… for the second time. He'll be fine. Everyone runs out of the church, and Damon chases down Connor, but he gets away. Caroline and Elena save April and help her to believe everything is going to be OK.

At the end, Elena is overwhelmed with grief because of all the loss their town has suffered. Stefan gets the friends together to release wish lanterns for loved ones who have died. He really is quite sensitive. As usual, the pessimistic Damon isn't interested in the emotional display and instead gets drunk and talks to Alaric's gravestone. At the end of his rant, a dead Alaric appears and says, "I miss you, too, buddy." It's just too bad Damon couldn't see him.

Having a baby when you don’t have a mom

$

If you lost your own mother before you became a parent, it can be truly bittersweet to go through pregnancy, birth and the baby years without your mom being there for advice or simply to bask in the joy of a grandchild. We talk with moms who have been through parenthood without their own mothers by their sides.

When you have a child of your own, your relationship with your parents — particularly your mother — begins to change. Chances are you will begin to understand your relationship from her perspective, and her guidance and support during your early parenting years can be crucial.

How your sense of loss changes

If your mom died before you had a baby, it can really feel like you’re missing out on connecting with your mother in a special way. Her absence can be felt in a new way once you go through pregnancy and birth, and not having your mom by your side as you move through your parenting experience can make your loss even more pronounced.

"I missed learning about her experiences with her pregnancies."

Liz is the mother of two children and lives in Australia. Her mother passed away before she became a mother herself, and she shared a little of what that experience has been like for her.

“I think I missed learning about her experiences with her pregnancies,” she shared with us. “She had three children before having me, so I am sure she would have plenty to share with me. I also think that your relationship with your parents changes a lot when you have kids, so I feel like I have missed out on how our mother/daughter relationship would have changed and developed after their birth and as they have gotten older.”

When your relationship wasn’t ideal

If your relationship with your mother wasn’t the best, it can still be difficult to go through pregnancy, birth and parenting without your mother by your side. Melissa, whose mother was an alcoholic and passed away when she was pregnant with her third child, had mixed feelings and unique experiences when her mother died, and the years after.

"I didn't like my mom, but I loved her very much!"

“The thing is, she had been an addict for so many years that it kind of felt like I had already really lost her,” she shared. “But I could still go to her with all the exciting news I had or new pregnancy problems I had. I didn't like my mom, but I loved her very much! Before she became an alcoholic, she was a wonderful mother that did her absolute best to raise my sister and I.”

Missing a grandparent

Missing your mom means that your child will grow up to miss a grandparent, and this can leave you wondering how to share your mother with him as he grows up. Sharing her life through photographs, the things she loved and your experiences growing up are great gifts to share with your children.

“My son is almost 6 now, and it was probably when he was around 5 that he started asking why his Poppy lives alone and I had to explain everything to him,” said Liz. “I think that was probably harder for me than him! I try to tell him as much as possible about her, because I grew up with only one grandparent, so I tell him about her music and what she used to do. I try to see the positives that they have three loving grandparents that are actively involved in their lives because even if your parents are still alive, this might not always be the case.”

As you move through your parenting years, your mother will be missed, yet she is a part of who you are. You can help keep her memory alive as your children grow and you will know that she is proud of the mother you have become.

When updating a teen's bedroom, space there are several things you should consider in order to make sure the space will be functional as well as trendy.

steel trash can

Storage wars

As your son moves into his teens, having adequate storage becomes more of an issue. Collections from his younger years may not be on display, but he's not ready to part with them just yet. Plastic bins with lids can be easily labeled and stacked in his closet for easy access to that baseball trophy collection. An old-school steel trash can is a hip place to store anything from sports equipment to dirty clothes. This steel shelving unit , intended for a garage or basement, is sturdy enough to stand up to the heaviest of teen stuff and has a cool industrial look.

locker storage bin

Clothes-minded

Teens are all about their clothes — and teen boys are no exception. Bigger clothes take up more space, so think about how to store clothing items in different ways. Folded jeans can be stored on closet shelves where they are easy to see rather than crammed into a dresser drawer. These metal locker storage bins with open tops are great for socks and underwear, which don't really need to be folded — regardless of what mom thinks. Double-hung closet rods are great for the unusually excessive T-shirt collection owned by most teenage boys. Be sure to leave a section with room to hang long items, like dress slacks.

Crate

Desk jockey

By the time they reach their teens, most boys will prefer to have a study space in their room. The kid-sized desk needs to go, but don't limit your options to just desks. You can make a large table-style desk from plywood and ready-made legs purchased at any home improvement store. Use permanent markers to doodle on the top for an instant one-of-a-kind art piece, then seal with a clear coat of spray paint. Your teen will also need lots of storage for school books and desk supplies. Mesh pencil cups are great for storing pencils, scissors, markers and paperclips. These wooden storage crates are a great way to store books and keep them handy.

T-shirt pillows

Bedtime

When he's up until the wee hours, your teen will need a cool place to sleep until noon. A platform bed with built-in drawers in the base is a smart way to find a bit of extra space in a small bedroom. If you have room, consider upgrading him to a full-sized bed or even a queen. You can use the extra sleeping space when guests visit and send your son to the sofa for the night. The Maxwell comforter set has bold stripes and neutral colors that roll with any theme. These T-shirt pillows or some comfy cushions make his bed not only a place to sleep, but a place to chill and listen to music or read a book.

Upgrade your teen boy's room with a few simple updates and give him a space to call his own.

What were on the minds and Twitter feeds of some of our favorite celebrity moms? Kristin Cavallari tweets that, despite stories that say otherwise, she has not yet lost all her baby weight. New mom Giuliana Rancic posted an adorable picture of baby Edward Duke, while Alicia Silverstone tweets about healthier Halloween options. Lastly, Tori Spelling ponders about her kids’ scary Halloween costumes.

Kristin CavallariKristin Cavallari

New mom Kristin Cavallari looked gorgeous as she showed off her slim figure at the ULTA Beauty's Donate With A Kiss event on October 2. The Laguna Beach star certainly looks like she has lost all her baby weight since giving birth to Camden on August 8, but perhaps she is wearing an amazing pair of Spanx under that black dress

Cavallari took to Twitter to call out US Weekly for citing a source as saying that five weeks after giving birth she “has already lost all the weight by working out like crazy with a trainer.”

“Hey us weekly next time u want to make something up at least get my sons bday right,” she tweeted. “I haven't lost all of my baby weight yet. Thats sending the wrong message to women.”

She also tweeted about how she handles traveling with baby Camden. “Who watches your baby when you have to travel for work?” wrote one follower.

“He comes with me and i bring my mom,” Cavallari replied.

Nothing like having an extra pair of hands to help when you are traveling with a baby — and it certainly is a bonus if it can be Grandma!

Tori Spelling

“Liam and Stella both want to be killers for Halloween... What does that say about me as a parent?” tweeted Tori Spelling, who just gave birth to her fourth child.

“Kids asleep and @Deanracer and I are settled in and psyched to watch season premiere of #WalkingDead . One of our fave shows!“ she later wrote, referring to her husband Dean McDermott.

Spelling became pregnant with her newborn baby Finn when Hattie was just 5 months old.

“After 2 years pregnant I finally got to have RAW fish again. #LovesMeSomeSushi,” tweeted Spelling, who recently shared her story of her difficult pregnancy to Us Weekly.

“I don't care how many kids you have... Nails like this is unacceptable!” wrote the new mom, with a photo of her chipped nail polish.

Giuliana Rancic

Giuliana Rancic

On the heels of reports that Giuliana Rancic and her husband Bill Rancic are gearing up for another baby via surrogate, the E! News reporter tweeted an adorable photo of baby Duke.

“Here's latest pic @BillRancic and I took of Duke,” she tweeted, with a link to a photo of their adorable baby.

So far, the new parents have kept Edward away from the cameras, but Giuliana tweeted to a fan that he will be on the new season of their reality show “very soon!!!”

The breast cancer survivor also tweeted about how she and Bill prepared to be parents. “Before @DukeRancic there were parenting classes, lots of them!” she wrote.

The internet-savvy parents have already set up their son Duke with his own Twitter page and, despite never writing a single tweet , he already has over 17,000 followers!

Alicia Silverstone

Want to be included in Alicia Silverstone’s new book? “Tell me about your #vegan pregnancy, and I may feature you in my next book!” tweeted the actress, who has one son named Bear Blu.

The Kind Life blogger also shares tips for a healthier Halloween — and says you can even compost candy!

“5 ideas for celebrating a green Halloween,” she tweeted, with a link to her website.

“Back in the day, Halloween was a pre-party for All Saints Day….So, how did we get from that to parading our kids around the neighborhood, asking for unhealthy handouts? Who knows?” she writes. “I'm not sure what I'll do around Halloween when my little muffin grows up, but for now, these are some ideas I have for celebrating kind-style”

3 Pleasing prints you'll love!

Future fashion historians will remember 2012 as a year that brought us a multitude of prints and a mix of all sorts of patterns, textures and colors. If you love prints, then this season is your style nirvana. I'm about to unleash three of my favorite print trends for fall, because you guessed it, this is my pick as favorite trend of the week!

Now remember, if you're hesitant about wearing prints, you can bring them into your style in small doses, with accessories. But if you're like me and you want to dive in head first, then you'll want to go for bigger statement pieces like dresses, trousers and tops.

Our pick: Kirna Zabete for Target floral dress

Feisty florals

This fall, we're continuing the floral theme from spring, though now florals are edgier with darker backgrounds and richer colors. This is great news for the 99 percent of us that are on a budget, as this classic print just keeps rolling over season to season. Want to get crazy? Mix your floral prints with a pinstriped menswear piece for a look that is insanely chic.

Our pick: Kirna Zabete for Target floral dress

Indian bomber jacket

Baroque brocade

This print or pattern is so refined and rich, think Catherine the Great or Marie Antoinette! You'll see this opulent print with gold or metallic thread, because for brocade it's all about the glamour. Layer your brocade with a broken-in denim or chambray to keep your look modern and downtown as opposed to overdone.

Our pick: Indian bomber jacket

Horse print blouse

Equine excess

True story, as a child I drew pictures of ponies and horses nonstop. My parents never got the hint, so I remained pony-less all throughout my childhood. Fast forward to fall 2012, with equine prints all the rage. I'm so excited for this trend, as it allows me to celebrate my love for all things equestrian. I'm planning on layering my horse delights: a print sweater with horse bit jewelry and even a horse hair belt. Whoa!

Our pick: Horse print blouse

Now if these prints don't excite you like they do me, there are other honorable mentions for you to fall for, such as houndstooth, paisley, animal prints including leopard and python, and our classic friend, stripes!

Tell us

So there you have it, SK Style Watchers! Three amazing, not to be missed prints for your style this season. What print is your favorite? Leave me a comment below — I love to hear from you! Thanks for watching, and for SheKnows Style, I'm Jill Laine.

DIY pumpkin-egg white face mask

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons organic pumpkin purée
1 egg white

Easy, DIY pumpkin mask

You might have all you need right in your own kitchen to easily whip together a moisturizing and toning mask. All you need is organic pumpkin purée and an egg white. The egg helps smooth and tone your skin while the pumpkin, full of vitamins A and C, helps to exfoliate and brighten your skin.

It might seem like you’re making a pumpkin treat to eat, but this one is definitely a treat for your face! Before applying the mask to your face, first test it on your inner arm, where you skin is more sensitive, to help ensure you can tolerate the ingredients. Wash your face to remove any dirt or makeup, and apply the mask starting from the chin and working your way up, avoiding your eyes.

1

Step 1

Add the egg white to a small bowl and whip with a whisk.

Cake ball brains with oozing cherry blood

Whether you're hosting an adults-only costume party or a spooky kid-friendly bash, these zombie-themed Halloween treats will be a huge hit with the whole crowd.

Cake Ball Brains with Oozing Cherry Blood

These bloody brains look cool just sitting idly on your dessert table. But just wait until your guests cut into them and find the gruesome surprise!

Cake ball brains with oozing cherry blood

Yields 28-36 cake balls

Ingredients:

  • 1 baked chocolate cake
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup vanilla frosting
  • 30-38 ounces melted white confectionery coating/candy melts
  • Black candy coloring
  • 1/2 cup cherry jelly, jam, preserves or dessert sauce
  • Red food coloring

Supplies:

Directions:

1

Step one

Note: By using a stand mixer, your cake balls will have a smooth truffle-like consistency. If you do this by hand, you will probably want to mix it with your actual hands to get it smooth.

Break up prebaked cake into a mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer or a food processor. Add one-quarter cup white frosting. Mix to combine. If the mixture holds together well, and you can easily form balls, then stop. If it crumbles, add up to another one-quarter cup frosting. Set aside.

2

Step two

Melt your confectionery coating or white candy melts, according to these Chocolate Making Tips. If you'd like your brains to be gray, stir drops of black candy coloring into your melted white confectionery coating until you get the desired shade. Make them as dark as you prefer.

3

Step three

Spoon some melted white candy coating into one of the brain mold cavities.

Cake Ball Brains with Oozing Cherry Blood

Use a spoon or a pastry brush to "paint" the coating in a thin layer all around the inside of the mold. Be sure you can't see any pink through the white. Paint all four brain cavities in your mold.

Cake Ball Brains with Oozing Cherry Blood

Wipe off any candy coating around the edges of the mold. Freeze for five minutes. Don't leave them in any longer, or you may get cracks and condensation on your brains. Remove the molds from the freezer.

4

Step four

If you want your cherry filling to be brighter red, add a few drops of red food coloring to your jam, jelly or sauce. Spoon three-quarters teaspoon of the cherry filling into each brain cavity.

Cake Ball Brains with Oozing Cherry Blood

5

Step five

Scoop out about two tablespoons of the cake ball mixture and press it into a brain cavity leaving enough room to add a layer of candy coating on top.

Cake Ball Brains with Oozing Cherry Blood

6

Step six

Spoon some more white candy coating on top of each cake ball and smooth it out. Be sure to wipe off any excess coating around the edge of the mold. Freeze for five minutes.

Cake Ball Brains with Oozing Cherry Blood

7

Step seven

Remove the cake ball brains from freezer, turn mold upside down, press and pull on the mold until your brains pop out.

Cake Ball Brains with Oozing Cherry Blood

8

Step eight

Store the candy-coated brains in an airtight container for up to a week. Don't freeze or store these in the refrigerator as the moisture in the fridge will cause beads of condensation on your cake ball brains.

3 US cities with the best Halloween parties

Think Halloween is just about passing out candy, wearing the same ol' costume to the same ol' bar or watching reruns of old horror films on TV? If so, you need to pack your bags this All Hallows' Eve and hit up one of these scary good party cities! Just leave the lame Freddy Krueger mask at home!
Salem, MA -- Festival of the Dead

These three cities are known for their gigantic Halloween bashes and balls, so you won't be seeing the same ol' people you see at your local pub. In fact, Halloween is such a big deal in Salem, New Orleans and Las Vegas that people spend months planning and creating their costumes! If you're a Halloween junkie craving some real fun this Oct. 31, hit up one of these spooky lovin' cities.

Salem, Massachusetts

You can't think Halloween without thinking of Salem. Famous for the witch trials in the 1600s, this spooky city is said to be haunted by the 19 women who were executed. Although many people flock to Salem to hunt for spooks, a majority of the travelers come for the party! The monthlong Festival of the Dead was voted one of the top 10 Halloween parties by AskMen.com and takes place in Salem's city center. Destination Salem says the city sees more than 200,000 visitors for the festival and makes about 25 percent of their tourism revenue during the month of October.

The event kicks off on Oct. 1 with the opening of the Annual Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo. The parties, events, parades and fairs go all the way until Oct. 31, but the main attraction is the Official Salem Witches Ball in the historic Hawthorne Hotel. Like the movie Hocus Pocus depicts, the town and visitors dress up in elaborate costumes , enjoy Halloween-inspired hors d'oeuvres and dance the night away to live music. There's a costume contest this year with a prize of $1,000 for the winner! Hotels book up months in advance, but check for hotel and inn openings at Salem.org.

New Orleans, Louisiana

The Big Easy isn't just known for Mardi Gras. In fact, thousands of visitors flock to the city in October for the huge Halloween parties. The first of the large parties is the Halloween in New Orleans four-day festival. This event is one of the largest charity-driven parties in the city. So far, the four-day extravaganza has raised $4.2 million dollars for Project Lazarus, an assisted living community for people living with AIDS. The party kicks off on Oct. 25 with the Lazarus black tie ball. The biggest party of the festival is the Monster Brawl on Saturday with more than 3,000 people usually in attendance. There's a costume contest complete with celebrity judges, a celebrity fight, a New Orleans Bounce, costume parade and show. Tickets include drinks and start at $260 for the whole four days or $85 for one.

The Voodoo Experience is a concert festival that starts on Oct. 26 and goes until Oct. 28. The huge concert series draws more than 100,000 people to the Big Easy during Halloween weekend. This year, the concert is featuring the Avett Brothers, Jack White, Nas and Neil Young, among others. Tickets start at $90. Because of the Halloween event and the concert, most of the hotels in New Orleans during Halloween see 85 percent to 90 percent occupancy. In addition to these events, there's also the Krewe of Brews Halloween parade down Frenchmen street and Boo at the Zoo at the Audubon Zoo.

Las Vegas, Nevada

If there's one thing Sin City knows how to do, it's party. Halloween on the famous Las Vegas Strip is one of the craziest times of year for the party city and is home to the best Halloween party in the entire country . In addition, this party was also named as the world's wildest Halloween party by Bizarre magazine and one of the top events in the world by the Travel Channel. So what is this amazing Halloween party? The Fetish and Fantasy Ball at the Hard Rock Casino, happening on Oct. 27!

The ball put Vegas on the map as the best place to go for Halloween because of its dedication to the event. Party goers not wearing a costume are fined $40, and the person with the best costume has a chance to walk home with $1,200! All types of costumes and fantasy apparel are welcome, however, no nudity. In addition to amazing DJs, dancing and booze, this party has erotic stage shows, laser cannons, two haunted houses, a porn slide show, stilt walkers, fire breathers and belly dancers, to name a few! The event costs $88. Another great option is the Haunted Hotel Ball at the Mandalay Bay also taking place on Oct. 27, complete with an Emmy award winning designed set and more than $5,000 in costume prizes.

Jason Aldean: 'Buy someone else's record'

$

Jason Aldean has some advice for country purists who send him buckets of haterade for including rap in his tunes -- and it involves spending your money elsewhere, because he doesn't need it.

Jason Aldean

Ludacris on a country song? Sounds crazy, but singer Jason Aldean is all about it -- and if you aren't, then that's your problem, not his.

The "Night Train" singer told Charlotte's The New 1037 that other people's taste in music doesn't concern him.

"Go buy a pure country record," he said. "If we all sounded the same it would be boring. If you like what I do, go get the record. If you don't? Buy somebody else's record."

"I respect their opinion, but it's not going to change the way I play my music."

"I love working with other artists," he said. "It's fun for me, and also fans."

Aldean collaborated with two other country stars, Luke Bryan and Eric Church, for the single, "The Only Way I Know."

"Luke and I are really good friends," Aldean explained, and "he and I have two completely different personalities. He comes in and never stops talking, and I'm the complete opposite."

"…the more I listened to [the song], the more I thought we could bring somebody else in, and Eric was the first guy that came to mind. I felt like it would be a really cool thing for the album."

Jason Aldean on extramarital kiss: "Sorry, everyone" >>

The title "Night Train" brings to mind the Guns N' Roses hit of the same name, but none of the same meaning. While the Axl Rose tune was actually about drugs, Aldean's is much more family friendly fare.

"'Night Train' to me kind of makes me think about a couple years ago [when] I was on a bus with 12 other guys and I was pulling one trailer," he explained. "Now I'm backstage and I look around and we have eight or nine buses and eight or nine semis. And when we pull out of the venue, that's what it looks like -- it looks like a freight train going down the interstate."

Aldean's entire album Night Train is available in stores and on iTunes.

Switch Witch: Good or bad idea?

$
0
0
If you’re like a lot of moms, you don’t love the over-the-top candy aspect of Halloween. An alternative idea to candy is the Switch Witch. But is this the best solution? We asked real moms to give us their non candy-coated opinions.

What is the Switch Witch?

In case you're not familiar, the Switch Witch is a good witch that visits your home on Halloween night, usually while the children sleep, and takes all of the children's Halloween candy and leaves a toy in its place. She loves high-fructose corn syrup. She's a huge fan of mouth-watering sugary snacks. In other words, she's a lover of all things candy. And she wants your child's, if he's willing to hand it over...

Why the Switch Witch?

She might be the "Santa Claus" of October — bringing a child his first non-edible goody of the holiday season — in exchange for his candy — and she might be a good witch, but is she really a good idea?

"She might be the 'Santa Claus' of October... "

Many might argue that the Switch Witch is really just a fix for the anti-candy mom. For the mom who can't stomach the idea of her child consuming candy bars, gummy things and sometimes even pure sugar ad-nauseum. And although most moms would agree that eating candy in excess, especially in one sitting — Halloween or not — is not the best idea for their children's tummies, is it really necessary to talk the kids into this idea of wiping out the candy stash they just collected earlier that evening?

Barbara from Pennsylvania puts it simply. "While trick-or-treating is a fun tradition for kids, I have never thought it particularly healthy to encourage gluttony by bringing home pillow cases and bags overflowing with candy! With my kids, it always seemed as if the more they got, the more they wanted."

Does the Switch Witch take the fun out of Halloween?

It all depends on who you ask. Barbara says, no. "It's a tactful way to teach kids moderation, making choices, trading and currency concepts and it also adds a bit of whimsical fun to a child's holiday. They can participate in trick-or-treating without feeling like they're missing out when the candy gets taken away for their own good, and parents don't have to feel like they are depriving their children of a fun tradition."

Tricks for healthier Halloween treats >>

Not to mention many kids might scream, yes! to the idea of the Switch Witch, far more excited with the prospect of the latest video game than a bag full of mini candy bars. And because the more candy you give the Switch Witch, the better your toy, this might be a motivator to collect more candy in the first place.

But Elizabeth, mother of two from California, disagrees. "That's what Santa Claus is for," she says. "Halloween's not about toys, it's about candy. It's a part of being a kid. They don't have to eat enough candy to get a cavity, but I wouldn't dream of taking any of it from them."

Switch Witch 101

If you want to give the Switch Witch a try this year, here's what you do:

  • Sell your child on the idea. Give her some backstory on who the Switch Witch is.
  • Have your child decide, in advance of trick-or-treating, how much candy she is willing to give to the Switch Witch.
  • Have your child write a note to the Switch Witch asking for the toy she wants.
  • After the trick-or-treating is over, help your child prepare the candy for the Switch Witch.
  • After your child goes to sleep, exchange the candy for the toy. Tip: Throw it out immediately so your child doesn't find it and so you don't eat it!

Does the Switch Witch teach a good lesson?

"One year, my then 10-year-old son, decided to sneak into the candy stash while we all were asleep, and made himself extremely sick from the amount of candy he ate. That is why I think that the Switch Witch is a fantastic idea ," adds Barbara.

So is it the worst thing to be taught that a sugar high is short lived but a toy can be long-lasting? If a mom doesn't want to venture off her healthy family plan even for this holiday the Switch Witch can be a welcome rescue.

"This is especially a good solution for kids with allergies, medical or dietary requirements that may be restricted from having candy, chocolate, nuts, food dyes, etc.," says Barbara.

Plus, the kids can still elect to keep some candy. So they reap the benefits of both a little sugar and a fun toy.

Ken Baker talks Fangirl

$
0
0
With teen idols such as Justin Bieber and One Direction, fan girl hysteria has never had a firmer grip on our youth — it’s about time somebody write a novel about it. E! Channel’s Chief News Correspondent Ken Baker shares his insider knowledge on the crazy lives of Hollywood’s most famous teens in his new novel, Fangirl — and he isn't sparing any details on Tinseltown's youth.

It’s the story of a daydreaming teenage girl who not only fights to meet her teen obsession Peter Maxx, but ends up with romantic tweets, IMs, and texts from him. Where that romance leads will have tweens and teens glued to every fantastical page.

SheKnows: What inspired you to write Fangirl?

Ken Baker: Twitter — to be totally honest. Fans have so much potential for direct access to their celebrity crushes via Twitter that it is not much of a stretch to imagine a regular girl from a small town grabbing the attention of a pop star. In fact, the most shocking thing is that it hasn't already happened. But, equally inspiring really, are all the interesting stories and behind-the-scenes things I have witnessed and reported on over the years covering celebrities that tell the inside story of what the life of a teen idol is really like. Fiction is liberating because I can tell the real story!

Plus, in the early stages of outlining Fangirl, I came across a quote from Justin Bieber that turned the lightbulb on in my head. The Biebs was asked if he would ever date a fan and he replied, “I think that it just depends — it depends what the situation is. I think that I’m not going to limit myself." Fangirl's pop star Peter Maxx obviously has the same open-minded attitude, which of course makes him able to fall for his fangirl, Josie Brant.

SheKnows: Was it hard writing from the perspective of a teenage girl?

Ken Baker: Anyone who knows me would tell you that, for better or worse, I have a little teen girl in me. Yes, I realize that seems really weird, but I have to admit it is true. What I mean by that is, having been a celebrity journalist for the last — wow, I can't even believe it has been this long — 16 years, I am trained to put myself into the shoes of fans when covering celebs. A lot of the audience I speak to every night on E! News is made up of young women, so I try to stay in tune with where their heads are at, what they care about, what connects with them. Sure, it was challenging to pull off. But I did my research! I also interviewed several high school-age girls around my neighborhood, and even did a field trip up to Bakersfield, California, where Josie Brant lives. There, I met up with some local kids there and picked their brain. I call it my "lab work." I asked a lot of questions. I also did a lot of eavesdropping and observing at concerts, coffee shops, the mall, and fan events. So, in observing, interviewing and soaking in the whole teen fangirl culture, I approached writing the novel like I would writing a piece of journalism. Also, you have to realize that Fangirl is told equally from the girl and the boy's perspective. So it wasn't as hard as it could have been!

SheKnows: Is this based on any famous teens you’ve interviewed or reported on?

Ken Baker: It is based on all the teen celebs, yet none of them specifically. Peter Maxx is entirely his own person. But, yes, Miley, Selena, Justin Bieber, One Direction… they are all a part of Peter in some way.

SheKnows: Besides Kylie and Kendall Jenner, who are some other teen queens you’ve interacted with?

Ken Baker: So many. I mean it is my job. I have met Miley, Selena, the Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber. Still haven't met Taylor Swift, but she is no longer a teen, so I guess I lost my chance!

Seriously, though, my job at E! News is so awesome. I get to interview and meet so many interesting pop culture personalities. Just the other day, I had to interview Aerosmith at the House of Blues and when I got back to the studio I sat down in the makeup chair next to… Carly Rae Jepsen! I couldn't think of two musical acts any more different!

SheKnows: You have a daughter of your own. How did that affect the way you told this story?

Ken Baker: I wanted to write a story that my kids would be proud of and that they could relate to. Because the book is about more than just the world of pop stars and their fans; it is also about the power of music, about being true to yourself, about not letting your fears stop you from going for your dreams. These are messages that I hope will come across in the novel and that anyone — be it my 8-year-old daughter or an 80-year-old reader — can relate to and be inspired by.

SheKnows: Are you going to be more protective of her when she grows up based on what you know about the Los Angeles scene from working in it for so long?

Ken Baker: I live south of Hollywood near the beach, pretty much out of the Hollywood orbit, and I have a joke with my wife that our kids aren't allowed north of LAX. But the bottom line is that if their dreams end up being to work in Hollywood, I will support them. But, naturally, I will first tell them all the reasons why it might not be a good idea!

SheKnows: Who do you think is the best teen celebrity role model in the business right now?

Ken Baker: I don't think it is healthy for teens — famous or not — to have the pressure of being a role model. I mean, isn't it hard enough to transition from being a kid to an adult? I mean, I'm technically an adult and I am still struggling with being a grownup.
