For all the romantics out there, Fathom Events and Sony Pictures Entertainment are putting on a once-in-a-lifetime event. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the '90s classic rom-com Sleepless in Seattle, the film will come back to theaters for two nights only in December.

Originally released in 1993, Sleepless in Seattle stars Tom Hanks as recent widower Sam Baldwin, whose son calls a national radio show to seek advice on how to help his father. Meg Ryan stars as reporter Annie Reed, who's one of thousands of women to hear the broadcast and feel moved by Sam's story. Although she's already engaged to another man, she can't stop thinking about Sam — so the two arrange to meet at the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day. The rest, as they say, is history.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the 25th anniversary screenings will feature a new introduction to the film by Ryan and producer Gary Foster.

“We couldn’t let 2018 come to an end without honoring one of the truly great romantic comedies as it celebrates its 25th anniversary — and we’re doubly excited to have the help of Meg Ryan and Gary Foster, whose talents were so critical to making this film a success,” said Fathom Events Vice President of Studio Relations Tom Lucas in a statement.

Hanks and Ryan have starred in four films together, including 2016's Ithaca — which was also Ryan's directorial debut. During an interview with People about working with him again, she described him as having "big spirit" and said that after all her years of knowing him, she "can't get over how much he loves the water."

Fans will surely be excited to see America's sweethearts together again in one of their most iconic films. Per EW, Sleepless in Seattle will be screened at nearly 400 theaters on Dec. 2 and 5 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (all local times). Tickets and locations are available via Fathom Events.

These Smirnoff-Filled Christmas Tree Ornaments Make the Perfect Holiday Gift

The holiday season is all about celebrating, and this year, Smirnoff is making it easier to do just that. They've released a line of limited-edition No. 21 holiday ornament bottles full of their signature vodka that will definitely add some flair to bar carts and office parties alike.

Each 750-milliliter bottle will retail for $12.99. Not bad for such a festive addition to your home bar. The bottles are colorful, bedecked in designs like Christmas trees, holiday lights and falling snow. They're also emblazoned with quotations like "Mix & Mingle," "#BESTGIFTEVER" and "Don't Get Lit, Drink Responsibly."

Smirnoff ornament bottle

Now, sadly the bottles are a little too heavy to actually hang on your Christmas tree unless you have a 20-footer with big, strong branches (if so, do you live in a castle, and do you need a roommate?). But they are the perfect size to leave as gifts under the tree, and they'll add a boost to any big-batch holiday punch or classy, classic cocktail (like Moscow mules) you whip up while celebrating the season with your friends and family.

The holiday ornament bottles are available now but will only be around for a limited time, so if you see them in stores, make sure you stock up on enough to last you through New Year's. And when you're finished, don't throw the bottle away — you can stuff it full of twinkly lights and use it to decorate your bar next Christmas.

McDonald's Is Serving Up a New Breakfast Item — a Chicken Egg McMuffin

The grass is always greener on the other side, which is doubly true for those living across the country from McDonald's HQ in Chicago.

That's where the fast-food chain has one of their most interesting restaurants: an experimental venue that specializes in showcasing potential new menu items as well as McDonald's favorites from around the world.

They've recently added the crispy Chicken McMuffin with egg, a menu item that originated in Asia. Those in Chicago who visit the restaurant in the West Loop neighborhood can enjoy this breakfast delicacy featuring a crispy McChicken patty sandwiched between two toasted English muffin buns slathered in mayo and topped with an egg rested atop a slice of American cheese. Think of it as a gloriously protein-rich way to start your day (you might want to hit the gym first, though, or you'll probably immediately go back to sleep after eating it).

Chicken egg mcmuffin

Other savory options at McDonald's HQ include the vegan (yes, vegan!) McAloo Tikki from India, a veggie patty that's served with eggless tomato mayo, tomato and onion; a legitimately fresh-sounding tomato-mozzarella chicken sandwich from Canada that tops grilled or crispy chicken with mozzarella, tomato-herb sauce, tomato, red onion and lettuce; and a self-explanatory cheddar barbecue bacon burger from Australia.

There are salads too. Both from Canada, the Keep Calm, Caesar On and I'm Greeking Out salads sound like the perfect pick-me-ups on your lunch break.

But who cares about salad when you could be sipping on a chocolaty wafer McFlurry from Germany? This shake features soft-serve vanilla ice cream filled with crushed chocolate wafer candy bars and a swirl of hot fudge or warm caramel. Buying a plane ticket to Chicago in November has never seemed more appealing.

Wafer McFlurry

If you want to try these along with other desserts and savory items on their rotating global menu, you can head to the McDonald's HQ restaurant, which is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It's totally worth a road trip. Just remember to bring your stretchy pants.

Nicole Kidman Opens Up About 2 of Her Kids Becoming Scientologists

Nicole Kidman doesn't generally open up about her marriage to Tom Cruise or her relationships with their two adopted children, Isabella and Connor. There are lots of rumors about why that is, but in a new interview, Kidman seems eager to put those rumors to rest.

“I’m very private about all that. I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150 per cent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is,” Kidman told Australia's Who magazine in a rare candid discussion about Isabella and Connor both deciding to join the Church of Scientology.

“They are adults," she said. "They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them."

As far as Kidman is concerned, unconditional love for her children (which includes Connor and Isabella as well as her children with Keith Urban, Sunday and Faith) is part and parcel of being a mom. She told Who, "And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here. I think that’s so important because if that is taken away from a child, to sever that in any child, in any relationship, in any family — I believe it’s wrong. So that’s our job as a parent, to always offer unconditional love.”

Kidman herself was introduced to Scientology through Cruise when they met and started dating in the early '90s. After they separated in 2001, Kidman left the church and since then, she's rarely made mention of Connor and Isabella, even during thank-you speeches at award shows.

However, she has spoken publicly about allowing her kids to make their own decisions — including living with their dad and joining the Church of Scientology. Her newest interview with Who magazine only reinforces her stance.

It seems like things are looking up for Michael Bublé and his family. Two years after his eldest son, Noah, was diagnosed with liver cancer, Noah is healthier, Bublé and his wife Luisana Lopilato have welcomed their third child, and now, Bublé is going on tour for the first time since Lopilato texted him just minutes before his 2016 performance on The One Show on BBC One in 2016 to tell him about Noah's diagnosis.

According to E! News, Bublé will embark on a 27-stop U.S. tour called "Don't Believe the Rumors" starting on Feb. 13, 2019. The tour will kick off in Florida before moving up the East Coast and then across the country, wrapping up in Washington state on April 6.

Following his U.S. tour, Bublé is also slated to do a series of shorter tours across his home country of Canada. Canadian dates are spread throughout April, July and August of next year.

Going on tour marks a major step forward for Bublé and his family. When Noah was diagnosed in 2016, they released a statement on Facebook which read in part, "Luisana and I have put our careers on hold in order to devote all our time and attention to helping Noah get well. At this difficult time, we ask for your prayers and respect for our privacy. We have a long journey in front of us and hope that with the support of family, friends and fans around the world, we will win this battle, God willing.”

E! notes that "Don't Believe the Rumors" will be the sixth tour of Bublé's career and will support his new studio album, Love, which drops Nov. 16. Every full-price ticket purchased will include a CD or digital copy of the album. Fans can purchase tickets starting Nov. 19.

9 Reasons Every Parent of a Young Child Should Use an Amazon Echo Kids Edition

Technology often gets a bad rap when it comes to kids. Sure, parents should be invested in how their kids are using it and monitor accordingly, but tech can be educational, fun and useful for kids.

Take the Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition. Your child won't be able to get enough of the fun games and stories that comes with a FreeTime Unlimited subscription. You can even use it to your advantage when it comes to kid-friendly entertainment and early learning programs. Here's why every parent of a young child would enjoy an Echo Dot Kids Edition.

Stay connected with Drop-in and Announcements

Need to get a few chores done but want to say "I love you" from another room? With compatible Echo devices, you can use Drop-in as a two-way intercom or Announcements as a one-way intercom. It's also great when your kid keeps saying "five more minutes," and you don't want to have to run back up the stairs.

Start a dance party whenever you want

Great for a family dance-off, Freeze Dancers is exactly what it sounds like — the game commands kids to dance and then tells them to freeze when the music stops. If they don’t, they’re out of the round. It’s a great way to shake the sillies out. Just say, "Alexa, open Freeze Dancers."

A single voice command teaches your kids good teeth-brushing skills

The Chompers skill tells jokes, plays music and offers up facts about the importance of brushing teeth while your child gets familiar with the routine of you brushing their teeth, which sounds way more fun than setting a two-minute egg timer.

It’s a great white-noise machine

Just say, "Alexa, open Sleep Sounds" and your kids will be treated to rain, fan sounds and other ambient noise for a set period of time (or on a loop!) to help your child sleep through the night or go down for a nap.

Kid-appropriate jams whenever you need them

The Amazon Echo Kids Edition offers hands-free, kid-friendly music. With FreeTime Unlimited and built-in parental controls, you can automatically filter music with kids in mind on Amazon Music and Spotify.

Manners? Echo Dot Kids Edition has them

Try the “Magic Word” feature when using FreeTime Unlimited. When kids make their requests using “please,” Alexa thanks them for asking nicely.

Have a direct line to Elmo

Sesame Street has a whole new audience. Just say, “Alexa, ask Sesame Street to call Elmo,” and kids can learn about the letter of the day or play hide-and-seek with their favorite red monster.

Alexa makes story time more magical

If you purchase the Echo Dot Kids Edition, you get a year of the FreeTime Unlimited, which includes more than 300 Audible audiobooks and ad-free, kid-friendly radio stations. There’s also the Amazon Storytime skill, which has a collection of professionally narrated stories.

Alexa has a bedtime

Do your kids try to stay up all night chatting with Alexa? FreeTime lets you configure a time that Alexa stops responding so kids will go to bed.

The Best At-Home Cold & Cough Remedies According to Doctors

$

'Tis the season. Yes, the holidays are nearly upon us, but really, we're talking about cough and cold season. Once people start staying indoors and sharing germs, those wintertime maladies start piling on. While there is no cure for a virus (your doctor will tell you it has to run its course), there are a few things you can do at home to alleviate some of your symptoms so you don't feel quite so horrible. Here's what a few doctors have to say on the topic.

Gargle saltwater

Is your throat sore, either from a viral infection or drainage from your schnoz? Dr. Nadia Shaukat, physician and associate medical director at Paradocs Worldwide Inc., tells SheKnows saltwater may give you some relief. She suggests dissolving a half-teaspoon of table salt into 8 ounces of warm water and gargling up to four times a day.

Use steam

If your nose is stuffy, you know how miserable it is just to breathe (not to mention sleep). Thankfully, there's a nifty remedy you can do at home to clear those nasal passages up: breathing in steam. Shaukat says a humidifier can work, as can warm showers. However, if you're feeling weak or dizzy and standing up is a problem, she recommends a warm tub bath instead.

Try tea

There are a few different types of teas that can help your cold symptoms, physician Dr. Maiysha Clairborne tells SheKnows. "Peppermint is a natural cough suppressant and helps to open the airways when you feel congested in the chest," she shares. Also, India spice tea (including cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and black pepper) can help open up the chest and sinuses, she says.

Check out fresh ginger

"Fresh ginger is a great way to fight off cold and flu and its symptoms," says Clairborne. She suggests blending fresh ginger and drinking it as a shot (but definitely dilute it with water, as it's pretty spicy and potent). You can also boil it for 15 or 20 minutes and add some honey.

Take honey

Honey has been known to be a common item to turn to in the event of a viral illness. Shaukat says that it works well on a cough, so you can add a tablespoon or two of honey to a cup of warm water (or tea!) to get your honey in.

It's also soothing for adults and older children who have a sore throat. "Honey, however, should not be given to infants or very young children, as it may have botulinum spores, and their immune systems may not be strong enough to handle it."

Make some chicken soup

Chicken soup is soothing because it's warm and helps you feel comfortable, but that's not the only reason, says Shaukat. "Chicken soup contains an amino acid that acts like a drug called acetylcysteine, which is used to treat bronchitis," she explains. So not only is it a comfort food, but it may also actually help you get better faster.

Get some sleep

Sleep is definitely not overrated when you're feeling sick, Dr. Ian Tong, a physician and chief medical officer at Doctor On Demand, tells SheKnows. And while sleep is not something you can buy at a store, it's an at-home remedy that can actually help.

Sleeping will help your body have a chance to recover, he notes, and while you're not working on getting those z's, definitely don't overexert yourself. Your energy is best conserved to help you recoup your good health instead of trying to get a few extra chores done.

Maybe try vitamin supplementation, but keep this in mind

While many turn to vitamin C supplementation when they're under the weather, Tong says it may not do a whole lot of good after you're feeling ill. "Vitamin C is effective with cold symptom duration if you use it for prevention, but it is not as effective after you get sick," he warns. This means if you take vitamin C on the regular, it may shorten your cold but might not do a darn thing after you've come down with a cold.

While you can't go to a doc and get a cure for a viral illness, there are a few things you can try right there in the comfort of your home. Thankfully, these methods are doctor-approved and may make your journey to good health a little shorter — or at least less miserable.

Chrissy Metz Discusses Whether Kate's IVF Storyline Has Her Wanting Kids for Real

In her role as Kate Pearson on the family dramedy This Is Us, Chrissy Metz is learning a lot about what it's like to want to be a parent and encountering obstacles along the way to reaching that goal. However, she admitted in a new interview that she isn't quite ready to be a mom herself just yet.

“I have a huge family and I taught preschool. I love children and they are the funniest, most magnificent creatures,” she told Us Weekly on the Nov. 7 episode of their podcast, Watch With Us. She also noted that liking kids doesn't necessarily mean she's ready to have kids of her own right now.

“But I can’t even keep a succulent alive, so I’m concerned that should these thoughts and desires come about, that whether I do it conventionally or unconventionally, who knows?" Metz said. "I just feel like a baby myself. I need to nurture myself first before I could do that to another human being.”

Metz's This Is Us storyline in season three closely follows her and Toby's pursuit to conceive a child of their own. However, Kate is struggling to conceive through IVF treatments, partially due to her weight, which Metz said has given her some perspective on how tough conceiving through IVF can be, especially when it feels like there are too many obstacles to overcome.

“What I love is that [the writers] touch on this feeling of inadequacy because you feel, like, ‘Oh, I’m a woman who can’t have a baby naturally and I have to do this and I have to do that.’" she said. "But sometimes, that’s just the case and it’s not personal and you’re not broken. I think a really important message to convey is that it might not be a conventional way to start a family, but it’s a possible way and I know people whose lives have been completely changed for the better because of it.”

According to a 2017 report from the U.S. Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology, approximately 1 million babies were born in the U.S. between 1987 and 2015 through the use of IVF or other assisted reproductive technology. These include egg and sperm donors or adopted embryos.

Metz noted in her interview with Us that not everyone is meant to have children, and not all people with uteruses give birth: "That’s why adoption’s also a storyline in this show, and fostering," she said. "There’s so many other ways that you can be a parent. But it’s not because you’re broken or inadequate, but just some different journeys.”

A great thing about This Is Us is the way it tackles these real-life topics — and even if Metz isn't quite ready to upgrade from raising succulents, at least she can be prepared through her research for her role if she does decide to pursue parenthood herself.

Prince William Wants Prince Charles to Spend More Time With His Grandkids

Growing up in the public eye isn't easy, and if you're a veritable royal? Please. There are rules to follow and family obligations aplenty. But Prince William is hoping that at least for a little while, his father, Prince Charles, will take a step back from some of his royal duties to spend more time with his grandchildren.

According to a new documentary entitled Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70William revealed his father is “brilliant” with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and 6-month-old Prince Louis. However, he wishes his dad would slow down.

“It’s something I’m working more heavily on. Put it that way,” William said in the documentary. “I think he does have time for it, but I would like him to have more time with the children." And with Prince Charles' 70th birthday right around the corner — on Nov. 14, to be exact — William believes now is the perfect time.

"It’s a perfect time to consolidate a little bit,” William said, “as most families would do, you are worried about having them around and making sure their health’s OK. He’s the fittest man I know, but equally, I want him to be fit until he’s 95. Having more time with him at home would be lovely, and being able to, you know, play around with the grandchildren. Because when he’s there, he’s brilliant. But we need him there as much as possible.”

Charles’s wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, was also interviewed for the documentary, and she echoed William's sentiments. “He will get down on his knees and crawl about with them for hours, you know, making funny noises and laughing, and my grandchildren adore him, absolutely adore him."

“He reads Harry Potter and he can do all the different voices," Camilla said. "I think children really appreciate that.”

And we're sure they do. (Heck, as a Harry Potter fan, even I do.)

As for William and Charles, we hope they are both able to slow down and enjoy the littlest royals, because before they know it, they'll be all grown up and having royal weddings of their own.

Rep-Elect Lucy McBath Ran — & Won — After Her Son Was Murdered

$

Newly elected Congressperson Lucy McBath has one message for the United States: "Absolutely nothing — no politician & no special interest — is more powerful than a mother on a mission," she posted to Twitter on Thursday.

McBath, a Democrat who defeated Republican incumbent candidate Karen Handel in a race to represent Georgia's 6th District, was officially announced the winner on Thursday morning. A staunch supporter of stricter gun-control legislation, McBath devoted her campaign to her son, Jordan Davis, who was shot and killed by a man in 2012 at a gas station in Florida.

"Until we change the laws, until these kinds of things don't continue to happen, justice really is not served," she told BuzzFeed News' Profile in September. "When I become Congresswoman, there will be change in Georgia. And I intend to go toe to toe with the gun lobby."

And when McBath, who's beat breast cancer twice, puts her mind to something, she gets it done. As the daughter of the former Illinois NAACP president, she has a background in civic engagement, which she used for years as a leader for gun-control advocacy groups Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Everytown for Gun Safety.

McBath's platform includes expanding background checks, raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21 and preventing known domestic abusers from accessing guns.

Her win was announced on a somber day in America, just hours after a gunman killed 12 people at the Brookside Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. Weeks prior, two gunmen carried out apparent hate crimes: one gunman shot and killed 11 Jewish people in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, and another killed two Black people in a Louisville grocery store in an apparent race-related crime. According to The Gun Violence Archive, more than 12,000 people have died from gun violence in 2018, and last night's tragedy is now one of 307 verified mass shootings to happen this year alone.

McBath has a tough battle ahead if she intends to quell gun violence in the U.S., but with enough support from constituents and the record number of women now in office, I have no doubt this determined mother will make her mark.

Co-parenting Icons Anna Faris & Chris Pratt Agree to Live Within 5 Miles of Each Other

Anna Faris and Chris Pratt will live within 5 miles of each other until their son, Jack, completes sixth grade according to documents obtained by Entertainment Tonight

The decision is reportedly part of their divorce agreement, which the pair signed last month and finalized this week. Should either party want (or need) to move, they'll have to give at least three months' written notice. ET also notes the pair will continue to share a joint bank account for Jack and will work together to provide their son with enriching extracurricular activities.

The actors filed for divorce last December after eight years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Since the split, they've been a constant source of #CoparentingGoals, as they've gone on beach strolls with Jack and defended each other from online trolls. Recently, they were even spotted trick-or-treating together with their new partners, Michael Barrett and Katherine Schwarzenegger.

Both Faris and Pratt have been open with fans about the emotional toll the divorce took on them. "Divorce sucks," Pratt told Entertainment Weekly in April. "But at the end of the day, we've got a great kid who's got two parents who love him very much. And we're finding a way to navigate this while still remaining friends and still being kind to one another."

Faris echoed those sentiments on her podcast Unqualified. "We had an unbelievable marriage, and we have a great friendship now," she said. "And we love our son to death."

Still, Faris acknowledges the world expects more from her than they do from Pratt (especially now that they're separated). Because of this, she told SheKnows she experiences her fair share of mom guilt.

"You know, when I had Jack, I was worried that my whole identity would change. Not just within Hollywood but everywhere — that suddenly, the identity is motherhood," she told SheKnows. "And it's just not quite the same for men. And the different pressures that we put on moms?... It is difficult — of course, it is difficult. I have to get my son moving in the morning when he wants to sleep in, get myself ready while I get his snacks together — everyone deals with it."

Parenting — let alone co-parenting — isn't always easy, but we have no doubt Faris and Pratt will continue to do what's necessary to give Jack a wonderful childhood.

Giving Birth to a Boy Is More Likely to Lead to Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression does not discriminate. It can affect people from all backgrounds and walks of life. But a new study suggests that some are more prone to it than others.

In fact, according to the study, giving birth to a boy can greatly increase your PPD odds.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Kent and published in Social Science & Medicine, analyzed the reproductive histories of 296 women. What they found was that women who gave birth to boys were 71 to 79 percent more likely to experience postpartum depression than those who gave birth to girls.

What's more, researchers found that delivery complications increased those odds by 174 percent.

“The finding that having a baby boy or a difficult birth increases a woman’s risk gives health practitioners two new and easy ways to identify women who would particularly benefit from additional support in the first few weeks and months,” Dr. Sarah Johns, one of the researchers in the study, said in a statement.

According to Johns and Dr. Sarah Myers, who also worked on the study, the decision to assess the relationship between the sex of infants and PPD was a no-brainer, as there is a "known link between inflammatory immune response and the development of depressive symptoms."

That said, having a boy doesn't seal your fate. According to Johns, PPD is avoidable, and one of the best ways to avoid the condition is to monitor for it, as "it has been shown that giving women at risk extra help and support can make it less likely to develop.”

For more information about postpartum depression and/or other maternal mood disorders visit Postpartum Progress. You can also contact Postpartum Support International at 1-800-944-4773 or text “START” to 741-741 to immediately speak to a trained counselor at Crisis Text Line.

Get ready to swoon: Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have welcomed a baby girl into the world. Their newborn daughter was born via surrogate on Nov. 7. The next day, couple blessed the world with photos of themselves skin-to-skin with their "miracle baby." Union and Wade's baby's name has yet to be confirmed, but the couple might have provided an Easter egg for fans through song lyrics on Wade's Instagram post.

MoreAll the Celebs Who Are Pregnant Right Now

When I wake up in the mornin' love
And the sunlight hurts my eyes
And there's something without warning, love
Bears heavy on my mind

Then I look at you
And the world's alright with me
Just one look at you
And I know its gonna be
A lovely day
A lovely day

Union expressed her graciousness and love for her newborn by following the lyrics to "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers with a gushing caption: "We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate and 11/7 will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days. Welcome to the party sweet girl!"

Union has been extremely open about her fertility struggles this year, appearing on The Dr. Oz Show and revealing she's endured about eight or nine miscarriages. The star told Oz, "There's so much shame and mystery and guilt that surrounds fertility issues, and that’s why I wanted to include it in my book because I’m tired of it."

The 46-year-old also shared her diagnosis of adenomyosis while speaking at the #BlogHer18 conference on Aug. 8, 2018. "Everyone said, 'You're a career woman, you've prioritized your career, you waited too long and now you're just too old to have a kid — and that's on you for wanting a career.' The reality is, I actually have adenomyosis."

We couldn't be happier for Union, who has inspired millions of women by bravely sharing her journey to motherhood. Many congratulations to Union and Wade — and we can't wait to find out what the couple named their miracle.

I Almost Died 4 Times Before the Age of 30 — Here’s What I Learned

$
0
0

For most of my 30-some-odd years, I have projected the image of a perfect life. I went to great schools, worked and lived around the world and always had a smile on my face.

So it might surprise you to know that for most of my life, I’ve been ashamed of myself, loathed my existence and hated who I was.

I have always put on a “strong” front in an effort to mash the shame I felt for being anorexic as a young girl. It never dawned on me that I’ve been in a battle with myself. I was drawn toward anything that gave me the opportunity to challenge myself and prove I was no longer that weak girl.

After my nearly decadelong battle with eating disorders and suicide attempts, I was in a near-fatal car crash. Later, I had two massive strokes requiring emergency brain surgery, which left me paralyzed, forcing me to relearn everything from scratch like an infant.

Death had to beat me over the head three times before I finally realized how to live and love my life. Here’s what I’ve learned:

Embrace the differences

As an Indian child of immigrant parents, I always felt “different.” I was “too hairy,” had ugly brown eyes, was too chubby and my parents were too strict. I became accustomed to looking for ways I was not like my peers and mentally making a note it was yet another imperfect quality I should hide.

Societal ideals — and later, social media — became my yardstick, and if I deviated from these idealistic standards, I was not worthy.

At the time, I didn’t realize that differences are not imperfections but rather all the things that make me special and unique from every other person on this planet.

These days, I embrace everything from my frizzy hair to my imperfect skin to my idiosyncrasies.

The next time you feel like you don’t fit in, keep reminding yourself, “I am unique, one of a kind!” Embrace your differences, love them and know that it makes you you.

Vulnerability represents strength

It became apparent that much of the anger, shame and lack of love for myself resulted from not acknowledging and sharing the areas of my life I was embarrassed about. I chose to brush everything that wasn’t perfect under the rug and never speak about it. I realize now that was a mistake. I never realized how much healing happens when you share and allow yourself to be vulnerable.

Vulnerability also allows you to form more deep and meaningful relationships. We all want to know we are not alone in our struggles and that another person out there understands how we are feeling and thinking and can say to us, “I understand you, and feel the same way.”

We are human. It’s normal and OK to have fears, struggles and imperfect moments. When we share these times, talk about them, remember that vulnerability is your badge of courage and strength.

Chose new behaviors that serve you well

The process of uncovering all my past that I have kept hidden for so long forced me to acknowledge and actually understand my behaviors today and what is not working. It’s never easy to admit to being wrong and see the need for change.

Even though I have been doing the same thing for years, it doesn’t make it right or a healthy way to be living. Trying to undo the way I have thought of myself and treated myself over 20 years doesn't miraculously happen overnight. These things do not come naturally to me and require a lot of work on a daily basis. Who knew learning to be kind to myself and not beat myself up over every minor thing would take such effort?

There are sticky notes all over my desk and walls reminding me to “Trust your gut,” “Believe in yourself,” and “You’ve got this!” I have notes in my Google calendar to remind me of the daily progress I am making. It takes so much energy each day not to revert to my “normal” tendencies. It is easy to want to do what I’ve always done.

But every single day, I remind myself I am fortunate enough to still be here, and I want to lead a happy life with a clear mind, and so instead of beating myself up, I choose positive affirmations and don't let my mind run rampant with anxiety. I choose guided meditations instead of suppressing emotions and feeling shame. I talk to a trusted friend.

There are many things you can do to get you out of a funk and make you feel better. It might be listening to music, going on a walk in the fresh air, writing in a diary or watching a funny show.

So next time you catch yourself engaging in a behavior that does not serve you, look to your list and chose a new behavior that serves you well.

While it would have been easier to learn these lessons much earlier in life — and not have to almost die three times in the process — I’m grateful to know them now and put them into practice each day. There is no quick fix or magical pill to learn how to live your best life. But I know from experience that all that matters is taking one step at a time.

Emma Stone Changed Her Name Because of the Spice Girls

Plenty of celebrities change their names when they get to Hollywood, whether it's because they choose a stage name or because they share a name with someone who's already famous. So, how do they decide what new name to take? Emma Stone was inspired by her favorite member of the Spice Girls — which she admitted on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon on Thursday.

As reported by Entertainment Tonight, Stone changed her name from Emily to Emma when she became an actor, but she admitted to Fallon that she asked to be called Emma long before she started performing.

"I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what, now I am," Stone said. "So that’s pretty messed up."

She clarified, "It wasn’t necessarily because of her, but yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher and ask her to call me Emma? Yes, I did. And was it because of Emma Lee Bunton from the Spice Girls? Yes, it was."

This isn't the first time Stone has opened up about her years-long Spice Girls obsession. In 2014, as noted by ET, she was brought to tears during an Australian press tour when she received a video message from Mel B, aka Scary Spice.

Stone also told Fallon that she's seen the girl group in concert twice and has big plans to see them on their 2019 U.K. reunion tour, too. "I saw them in concert in the '90s," she said. "I saw them at O2 Arena in 2008, and they recently announced a new tour and I will be going to that somehow. I don’t think tickets are on sale yet, but I’m gonna figure it out."

To close out the segment, Fallon had Stone take a BuzzFeed quiz to determine, once and for all, which Spice Girl she actually is — name change aside. When the results of the quiz revealed that Stone is supposedly most like Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham, who won't be going on tour with the rest of the group), she couldn't believe it.

"I'm Posh Spice?!" Stone declared, rearing back from Fallon's desk with her hands in the air. "I am shocked! I am shocked."

Dubious quiz results or no, the fact that Stone is so open about her love for the Spice Girls is amazing — and we hope she actually gets to meet them someday so she can tell them how much they mean to her. Stone is living the dream for lots of Spice Girls fans who wanted so badly to be just like the band, and we're here for it.

Michelle Obama Opens Up About Miscarriage & Using IVF to Conceive Both Daughters

Ever since she stepped into the public eye, Michelle Obama has been a vocal advocate for women's health. Now, in her new memoir Becoming, she is opening up about her struggles with infertility and miscarriage — topics that are still stigmatized.

In an exclusive interview with Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts, Obama said she felt "lost and alone" after going through a miscarriage 20 years ago.

“I felt like I failed because I didn't know how common miscarriages were, because we don't talk about them,” Obama told Roberts. “We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken. So that's one of the reasons why I think it's important to talk to young mothers about the fact that miscarriages happen.”

Obama said that she realized "the biological clock is real" and "egg production is limited" around the age of 34 or 35. She said she underwent in vitro fertilization in order to conceive her daughters, Sasha and Malia, now 17 and 20, respectively.

Around 10 to 15 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, according to the March of Dimes, and other people may miscarry before they're aware they are pregnant. Unfortunately, there is still guilt and shame associated with miscarrying, in part because it's still shrouded in secrecy. When people like Obama, Gabrielle Union and Chrissy Teigen speak out about miscarriage and infertility, it helps to normalize the conversation and make those going through it feel less alone.

Now, Obama has decided to lend her voice to the discussion on miscarriage and infertility to help destigmatize these incredibly common challenges that many people are afraid to talk about.

“I think it's the worst thing that we do to each other as women, not share the truth about our bodies and how they work,” Obama said.

What's better than free candy on Halloween? Our opinion may be unpopular, but we'd say a full rundown of Sephora's Beauty Insider Holiday 2018 Sale, including the sale's end date, suffices. The mecca of all things hair, skin and makeup has already launched most of its holiday offerings, but the fun has quite literally just begun. Here's what you need to know about the annual sale whether you're a VIB Rouge member or still working your way up the Insider ranks.

More: The 7 Features You’re Not Using Enough of at Sephora

For starters, the sale dates are different according to your status. The entire Beauty Insider program, which is free to join, is tiered, so your rewards are according to how much you spend. The more you spend, the better the discounts — make sense?

Once you spend over $350 in a year, you gain VIB status, and for purchases that total over $1,000, you get to be a VIB Rouge, the highest rank of them all.

As revealed in a post from the popular Instagram account TrendMood1, those with a VIB Rouge stamp will have exclusive sale access (20 percent off purchases online and in-store) Nov. 2 through 5 with the code ROUGEBONUS.

Next up are VIB members, who will have also have 20 percent off their purchases online and in-store the weekend of Nov. 9 through 12 with the code VIBBONUS. And finally, basic-level Insiders will get 15 percent off their purchases the weekend of Nov. 16 through 19 with the code BIBONUS.

The best part of this entire extravaganza is that there's still time (the entire sale wraps up on Nov. 19) to dissect Sephora's website and start bookmarking what products you plan to purchase... as long as they don't sell out first. Good luck!

7 Ways Amazon Echo Can Save Parents Time

When you become a parent, a lot of joy is brought into your life, but your schedule is bound to get tighter, too. Suddenly, there's so much to keep track of: keeping up with homework assignments and staying on schedule at work, juggling dinner and reading bedtime stories. It's a lot, but it doesn't have to be so difficult.

Amazon Echo helps you save time by streamlining your day. It provides hands-free access to information like traffic updates and dinner recipes. These are just a few of the ways that Echo and Alexa can save you time in your busy day.

It can help kids with homework

Echo Dot Kids Edition allows you and your kids to ask simple homework questions, like spelling a word, researching a science topic or double-checking math.

You can also use Echo Dot Kids Edition to set a homework or silent reading timer, so your kids know when time is up.

It can find and read recipes while you cook

If you're in a hurry to make dinner, ask Alexa to find a recipe on Allrecipes to make life easier. You can either ask Alexa to look up something on Allrecipes (for instance, "fettuccini alfredo recipe") or ask for recipes that include ingredients you have on hand ("I need a recipe with beef and tomatoes"). You can even specify how long you want the recipe to take to cook, so if you're really pressed, you don't end up making something more involved than you really have time for.

It makes picking out outfits easier

Picking out your kids' outfits the night before school will make mornings easier, but what if you choose shorts and a T-shirt only to wake up to rain? With an Echo, you can ask Alexa about the weather forecast while choosing clothes, saving you the hassle of last-minute outfit changes in the morning.

It records shopping lists

We don't know what's harder, remembering to write things down or not losing the list once it's written. With Echo and Alexa, you don't have to worry about keeping track of your shopping list anymore.

Just tell Alexa you want to create a list. She'll ask you to name it, and then you can add things to it. It's as easy as saying "Alexa, add broccoli to my shopping list," or if you want to add something to your kids' to-do list, you can say, "Alexa, add clean rooms to kids' to-do list."

When you want to access the list, you can either have your Echo read it out loud to you, see it on the Amazon Shopping app or view it on the Alexa app that lives on your phone or tablet. No more wasting time writing, rewriting and searching for those lists!

It keeps you on schedule with timers and reminders

Schedules are important when you're a parent, but sticking to them can be hard. It's easy to get caught up with work only to realize your kids have been indulging in hours of screen time or that nap time was supposed to end an hour ago and now you'll be up all night with your child.

Luckily, you can easily use Alexa to help stay on track. Just say, "Alexa, set timer," and you can set a timer for however long you need. You can also ask Alexa to set alarms and reminders and keep a calendar, so you never get behind schedule or forget to do important tasks.

It makes keeping up with the news easier

You want to stay informed, but it's also hard to find the time to read or watch the news when you're busy juggling your kids' schedules. Luckily, you can get the news from Alexa. Listen to your favorite news podcast, or just hear about the day's biggest headlines while making lunches or washing the kids' uniforms. Enable your favorite news source's skill, then ask Alexa for their news summary. You'll stay informed without having to spend too much time tracking down the info.

It lets you know where there's traffic

Between work and dropping kids off at school, practice and social events, most parents are in the car a lot. This means traffic can throw a big wrench into your day. But you can use Alexa to find out about traffic before you leave the house, allowing you to plan ahead and find alternate routes.

All it takes is one Echo device to streamline your life as a parent. You'll have more time to spend quality moments with your family and more time to spend on self-care, too.

Survivor's Elizabeth Olson Claims Another Player's Sabotage Led to Her Elimination

Although it appeared Survivor: David vs. Goliath contestant Angelina Keeley was about to bite the reality TV dust, she was spared from elimination as the newly merged tribe opted to take out Elizabeth Olson instead. But Olson didn't go without a fight. Before her torch was snuffed, Olson exposed Keeley for secretly warning her of the tribe's plan to vote her out. But it was too late. Everybody — including Olson's own allies from the David tribe — sent her packing.

SheKnows had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Olson about her elimination, including how one player threw her under the bus and why she believes he's playing "one of the most dynamic social games in the history of Survivor."

SheKnows: When it seemed like there might be a possibility the tribe was going to get rid of Angelina, everybody voted for you. What happened?

Elizabeth Olson: They saw the writing on the wall and they decided it would be better to be right than wrong. They kept all their options open for one more vote. If I was in their shoes, I would've probably done the same thing. It was the right thing to do. If the Goliaths weren't voting for Angelina, then they [Davids] should try to keep their place in the game as safe as possible by voting for me, too. I'm not bitter.

Elizabeth Olson on Survivor: David vs. Goliath

SK: Did any of your fellow Davids warn they were voting against you?

EO: No. My Davids did not. When Angelina told me on the path, it was right before we had to go to Tribal. I was talking to Gabby and Carl right as I'm going to a confessional right before Tribal, so I had no time to tell everybody. Gabby and Carl acted surprised, so they had me fooled. Both of them were hamming up the fact they didn't know I was actually going home. It was very frustrating, but at the same time, I was playing the game of Survivor. It's what I signed up for.

SK: Walking into that Tribal Council, did you know your time was up or was it a genuine shock to be voted out?

EO: I knew Angelina was telling me the truth, so I knew I was a target to go home and likely would go home. I literally felt like my destiny was 100 percent in my hands whether I was able to convince the Goliaths to vote out Angelina. She was their giant crack. She betrayed them all by coming and talking to me. If I could exploit that well enough, I felt like I had a chance. I felt like I was gaining some major traction seeing that come to fruition.

I was whispering around, too, at Tribal and I finally got around to Carl. He loudly proclaimed to everybody, "I don't even want to hear it, Elizabeth! I don't even want to hear it." At that point, that's when I realized all my Davids were in on it and they were voting for me, too. It took the wind out of my sails. I was gaining ground, but then no Goliath in their right mind would vote for Angelina not being confident that all the Davids weren't gonna vote for her. Had I known about the Strike Force six [Christian, Gabby, Nick, Alec, Alison and Mike] that did not involve Carl, I would've tried to utilize them more. But I was gunning on Alec being my one that I swapped over and having all the Davids vote for Angelina. I thought I only had to convince one; I didn't know I had to convince my Davids, too — specifically Carl. My game was screwed up by Carl. Ugh. So frustrating.

SK: Do you feel like Carl threw you under the bus?

EO: Yeah. He didn't like me. I don't think that he likes me now. I don't know what his deal is, man. That's not how I was raised. I never, that I know of, did anything to offend him. I know I'm annoying. I know that. He and I just clash. I think it might just be that we're so very different.

Dan Rengering and Elizabeth Olson on Survivor: David vs. Goliath

SK: Who were you planning to go to the end of the game with?

EO: When I got to that merge, my No. 1 strategy was to build relationships. I wanted to have as many one-on-one relational conversations with people — not strategy, necessarily — but with as many people that I hadn't met as possible. I think I flawed in going after my enemies first. I think I should've rounded the wagon train a bit more around my own people first. I just didn't think it was going to be my downfall. I felt like everybody, and even Carl, I had a working relationship with. I had talked in-game with Christian from day one. Me and Christian were actually much closer than what they showed. He tried so hard to save me on that vote. He tried. He kept telling me, "I'm trying."

I really liked Alec a lot, and I wanted to play the end game with him. I promised him and Christian a final three. And Lyrsa, I promised that, too. But she was, unfortunately, the last one out before the merge, which was like a knife to my heart. Those are the people that I was wanting to play the end game with.

Christian Hubicki, Elizabeth Olson and Lyrsa Torres on Survivor: David vs. Goliath

SK: Tell us more about Christian, because it seems he is so well liked by everybody.

EO: He's playing one of the most dynamic social games in the history of Survivor. He's a genius. He's also socially on point. It's not an accident that everybody and their mother wants to work with Christian. Kudos to my man Christian. You could tell that he was close with a lot of people.

SK: When Angelina warned you the tribe was coming for you, was it a strategic play to get your jury vote later or was it a heartfelt moment?

EO: Angelina is constantly playing. She's a very crafty person and good at manipulating situations. [...] I think part of the reason she believes herself in that is because she has genuine empathy, care, concern and kindness in her heart. I think she's lulled to sleep by that and is unaware of how crafty she really is. Sometimes that's what is coming across stronger to other players in the game, that she's so aggressive, manipulative and whatever. She's like, "Well, I was genuinely feeling that." Yeah, there might have been 5 percent genuine but 95 percent strategic. I think she's convinced herself that it's all good motives where she's actually just a genius and playing the game really well.

Davie Rickenbacker, Alec Merlino, Kara Kay, Angelina Keeley and Elizabeth Olson on Survivor: David vs. Goliath

SK: What has the fan reaction been like?

EO: I've heard very, very little negative, which has been surprising because I kind of came unglued and had a meltdown bigger than what they even showed about the bed thing. I've been pleasantly surprised by the whole experience, both while I was out there and by the fan base. As long as most people see the reality of what happened out there — the good, bad and the ugly — I don't care if people think I was the best Survivor ever. That's not my problem. My problem was to do my best to play the game and try my best to win.

Why You Shouldn't Tell People Your Baby Name Choice

$
0
0

One of the best parts of pregnancy should be choosing a name for your baby. And it can be — if you don't get overwhelmed by all the choices and you and your partner are pretty much on the same page when it comes to these things. My top tip as someone who has already named two kids and is currently growing a third in her uterus who's estimated to make an appearance in around eight weeks' time is don't tell anyone your baby name until there's an actual breathing, squirming, puking person attached to it

My theory was proved right a couple of months ago. We found out we were having a girl, so the baby boy name we'd chosen early on in the pregnancy was no longer required. We didn't think everyone would dig it as much as we did, so we agreed to keep it between us until little Sonny arrived. But now that we're not having a Sonny, we decided to share the name with our families. The reactions of some people were as expected ("Okaaaaay," accompanied by a skeptical look and even a shocked, "Really?!" followed by repetition of "Sonny" as if the more they said it, the better it would sound). We're pretty laid back about some people's absence of a filter, but it strengthened our resolve not to reveal the name we've chosen for our daughter.

I've since discovered that a lack of baby name diplomacy definitely isn't unique to our respective families.

When Kristen S. and her husband shared their baby name choice — Gram — with her "very Italian in-laws, who were deeply rooted in generations of Vinnies, Josephs, Sals, etc." her father-in-law looked them in the eye and said, "You ought to be ashamed of yourselves."

"It's funny now," says Kristen. "But I admit I was intimidated at the time."

It seems that even when a name otherwise gets a lot of compliments, there are always people ready to burst your baby name bubble. And sorry, grandparents, but you're typically the guilty parties. "For my second son, Milo, my parents hated it and kept saying it sounded like a dog or a cat's name (because of that '80s movie...) and my husband's parents just said it was 'interesting,'" says Alyssa H.

"When we shared a few top choices for our second son with two or three family members, we got all kinds of annoying stories, associations and feedback," says Katie C. “Toby was apparently the name of my brother-in-law’s bird and what my mother’s childhood friend called his ... ahem, most private part."

Lauren C., who is pregnant with twins, has shared her baby names with mixed results. "My girl's name has been met with silence, and the boy's name people are quick to say they love," she says. "I'm sad more people don't like my girl's name, but we love it."

So what's the answer? It's unanimous: Save yourself a world of pain and keep your baby name to yourself. "It's very hurtful to tell people you hate a name that they've chosen; it's as if you'll hate their kid because of the name," says Bethany K. "My advice is don't tell anyone in advance. It's a fun secret to reveal at birth."

Lauren G. and her husband also kept their son's name — Zephyr — a secret until he was born. "People are so eager to give their opinions," she says. "It was nice to keep it to ourselves, free of judgment, allowing us to really get used to the sound of it in our home in conversations just between my husband and I."

Midwife and author Kathy Fray agrees that the problem with announcing an unborn baby’s name is that people tend to give you their unsolicited opinion, perhaps because they assume the name is not quite set in stone because the baby isn’t born yet.

"My advice to parents-to-be about their chosen unborn-baby name is to keep it to yourself unless you want to receive others’ opinions, because after a baby is born, people are generally far more accepting of the name you’ve chosen and won’t slather you with unwanted naming advice," she tells SheKnows.

That's advice my husband and I are definitely following right now. We're also getting a kick out of the fact that people know we've chosen our baby name, they're driving themselves crazy trying to guess it, and so far, they're way off the mark.

On the other hand, you could just share the baby name you love and tell everyone to get over themselves.
