Meat & Cheese Might Actually Make Your Heart Healthier (& We Couldn't Be Happier)

Good news, carnivores: Meat, cheese and dairy products aren't just part of a well-balanced diet, they are good for your heart, at least according to a new report.

More: Why You May Want to Reconsider That Low-Carb Diet

Of course, this information is contrary to much of what we have been told (i.e., current dietary recommendations suggest eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat and/or nonfat dairy, choosing lean meats like chicken or fish and avoiding red meat and full-fat dairy products). However, the study — conducted by the European Society of Cardiology — found that saturated fats, like those found in meat and dairy, can actually protect the heart.

In fact, according to Professor Salim Yusuf, senior author of the study and director of the Population Health Research Institute at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, in a statement, dairy and meat products "are beneficial for heart health and longevity."

"Thinking on what constitutes a high quality diet for a global population needs to be reconsidered," he said. "For example, our results show that dairy products and meat are beneficial for heart health and longevity. This differs from current dietary advice."

What's more, according coprincipal investigator Dr. Andrew Mente of the PHRI, "people who consumed a diet emphasizing fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, dairy products, and meat had the lowest risks of cardiovascular disease and early death."

Why? Well, the reasoning is actually quite simple: According to the study, eating more unprocessed foods — like meat and cheese — meant individuals were less likely to eat refined carbohydrates, and this improved their overall health.

That said, as with all foods, meat and dairy products should still be consumed in moderation, as the amount of red meat being consumed by study participants amounted to about 4.5 ounces a day.

5 Small Daily Habits That Are Actually Killing Your Relationship

$

When it comes to things that end relationships, we tend to think about the big stuff: Infidelity, betrayal, blowout fights, one person being terrible. But often, the real undoing of a good relationship lies in the much smaller details, the daily habits we develop that create distance between a couple. And most likely, we're all guilty of doing these at least some of the time.

Here are the almost unnoticeable patterns that can eat away at even the best relationships according to two relationship therapists.

Not communicating

We have all heard that communication is key, but that doesn’t mean we’re good at it. “Talking is the glue that holds relationships together,” Fran Walfish, Beverly Hills family and relationship psychotherapist and costar on Sex Box on We TV, tells SheKnows. While she says it's natural that we sometimes get busy with other priorities, it’s important that we make a concerted effort to come back to communicating with our partners and set aside time to reconnect, like a weekly date night. "When couples stop talking, sex immediately follows,” she says. “You'd be surprised how many young, healthy people are living in sexless marriages.” So get to chatting.

Keeping score

If you find yourself keeping track of all the things your partner did or didn’t do — and all the things you did or didn’t do by comparison — you could be setting yourself up for failure. That’s because it doesn’t typically help us communicate effectively, says Kate Balestrieri, licensed psychologist and cofounder of Triune Therapy. “It really complicates our ability to be authentic and to get our needs met, which is what we’re frustrated about in the first place,” she tells SheKnows.

Imagine you’re keeping a mental tally sheet of the fact that your partner has left the dishes in the sink, their shoes on the floor and not taken out the trash, and now you’ve had to pick up the slack. If you’re keeping a tally, the next time your partner requests something of you, you’re more likely to think (or say!): “You don’t do anything around here anymore! I have to take care of everything!” That puts you both on the defensive, and it’s hard to communicate what’s underneath that — which is that you’re feeling overwhelmed — and hard to hear what’s going on with your partner, which may be something they’ve been bottling up and haven’t felt comfortable sharing.

That doesn’t mean you don’t tell your partner about the dishes. “ I think it’s appropriate to say, it would really mean a lot to me if you would do XYZ like you said you would, and when you don’t, I feel disappointed,” Balestrieri says. “But that’s really different than using a tally sheet and using it as a way to get power or express feeling disempowered indirectly.”

Saying yes when you mean no

This is a bad habit that almost all of us are guilty of from time to time. "Yes, I’ll stop by the grocery store" (even though I’m going to be working late and have no idea how I’m going to juggle that responsibility). "Yes, honey, I’ll go to your work event" (even though I’m feeling completely exhausted this week and desperately need time to myself). And then we either fail to do what we’ve been asked — forgetting, procrastinating or canceling altogether — and we disappoint our partner or we get resentful for taking on a task we didn’t have space to deal with.

But what’s so bad about these tiny white lies? “[It] creates a context of instability, and your partner feeling like you’re unreliable and like their needs are not important,” Balestrieri says. If you’re saying yes to things even though your partner knows you’re miserable or you’re failing to accomplish what you’ve said you would, your partner slowly stops knowing when they can trust your word.

“I always tell my patients, 'A hell no is the same as saying a hell yes to somebody,' because if you can definitively say no to your partner, then your yes is very valuable,” she says.

Skipping self-care

Yep, it goes back to the airplane mask analogy: You need to secure your own oxygen mask before helping others. “When we feel depleted, we can’t show up for ourselves let alone our partners,” Balestrieri says. “And that can create a lot of distance and disconnection."

So if you're not taking time for yourself, don't be surprised if you're struggling to connect with your partner. Carve out some me time to replenish your own sense of self, and you might be more willing to connect with others.

Getting lost in technology

Who here is guilty of occasionally trying to listen to their partner talk about their day... while answering a few texts you hadn’t gotten to or scrolling through a social media? Or having the TV on while our partner is talking? Unfortunately, this super-small habit has really heart-wrenching side effects. “If we’ve got one ear with them and one ear on our technology... then we’re not really being present fully, and that creates an intrusive sense of loneliness and can feel very abandoning to partners,” Balestrieri explains.

So leave the multitasking at work and notice when you’re reaching for a distraction when your partner is speaking with you, then mindfully reset your focus to the conversation.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Teases Big Changes for His Game of Thrones Character in Season 8

It's been a long year for Game of Thrones fans: season seven wrapped in August 2017, and season eight isn't slated to begin until April 2019. As such, many are chomping at the bit to know exactly what happens in Westeros and beyond the wall. Well, good news GoT fans: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau — known as Jaime "The Kingslayer" Lannister on the show — is talking, and boy does he have a lot to say. In fact, in a new interview with HuffPost, the actor confirmed his character is indeed heading north.

More: Don't Hold Your Breath for Game of Thrones Season 8 to Premiere in April 2019

"Well, he [Jaime] is heading north. I don’t think you can assume that he’s going to make it up there, but who knows. For sure, we see him head north. He might be eaten by dragons, you never know. Or he might just stumble, things happen. Or he might find the love of his life and suddenly he’s like, 'God, this is it. No more.'”

Of course, when season seven ended, it appeared the Kingslayer may be headed toward the wall. After finally standing up to his sister, Cersei, Jaime rode off in an unknown direction, but his latest interview confirmed what fans have been speculating.

When asked about Jaime's intentions, Coster-Waldau stated that he and Cersei are playing two "very different games...Cersei’s playing the game of thrones and Jaime’s playing the honest game of survival, and trying to accommodate both his sister and his brother."

Does this mean a character shift is in the cards for Jaime? Maybe. At the end of season seven, Cersei revealed that she had no intention to help Jon Snow or Daenerys in the war against the undead — which is what prompted Jaime to leave — so it seems like he may join #TeamDragons and (of course) his beloved Brienne.

As for Brienne, when asked about his relationship with the Starks' bodyguard/warrior/all-around badass, Coster-Waldau remained tight-lipped: "I don’t, well, I know how it ends but... I can’t comment on that."

DWTS Alums Peta Murgatroyd & Maksim Chmerkovskiy Won't Be Joining Season 27

Get ready to place your bets! The full list of pros competing for the coveted Mirrorball trophy on Dancing with the Stars’ 27th season has been released. On Tuesday, ABC announced the 13 “coaches” who’ll be helping celebrities realize their dance floor potential — and two names were noticeably absent from the list.

But first, let’s talk about who we will see hoofin’ it.

Troupe member Brandon Armstrong has gotten an upgrade to pro and will be joining some very familiar faces with fan favorites Cheryl Burke, Gleb Savchenko, Sharna Burgess, Alan Bersten, Witney Carson, Artem Chigvintsev, Lindsay Arnold, Keo Motsepe, newlyweds Emma Slater and Sasha Farber, as well as newly engaged Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson.

More: Celebrity Kids Who Should Be Cast on DWTS: Juniors

By now, you’ve probably realized which high-profile dancing couple isn’t present: Val’s brother, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and fellow dance pro and wife Peta Murgatroyd.

Don’t worry, though; it’s unlikely there’s any drama in the DWTS-hood. True, Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy won’t be twirling any contestants to victory this season. However, it’s understandable when you consider the fan favorites (and current power couple) have a lot going on outside of DWTS.

Last season, Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy couldn’t participate due to scheduling conflicts with their dance tour, "Maks, Val & Peta Live on Tour: Confidential." While the pair hasn’t officially commented on their absence this season, both have branched out.

In August, Chmerkovskiy personally produced a New York City show to run in September called Dancing in the Crowd. Murgatroyd costarred in the movie Faith, Hope & Love, out this November. She also has her own line of self-tanners that has recently taken off. Not to mention that Murgatroyd told ET she and Maks would like to get pregnant with a sibling for their son Shai “maybe in the next six months.”

More: Here's What We Think Will Happen on DWTS This Season

So, who knows? Maybe next season they’ll be juggling fewer projects and make a return to the DWTS stage. If not, they’ll undoubtedly still support their fellow pros (and in Maks’ case, his brother) from afar.

And, hey, if we’re really lucky, maybe Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy will live-tweet DWTS. Who doesn’t love a good live-tweet from an inside source? Although we’re still waiting to hear which celebrities will be competing on the upcoming season, there's no question there will be plenty of dance-related fodder to dissect each week.

Nicole Kidman Talks Letting Her Daughter Watch Big Little Lies

This week, actor Nicole Kidman revealed at the Omega "Her Time" exhibition in St. Petersburg, Russia, that her daughter is down to binge-watch her mom in Big Little Lies — but Kidman's not quite ready for her to see everything in the juicy HBO series just yet.

“My daughter is always negotiating with me to see Big Little Lies and I’m like, ‘No, no, no,’” Kidman said, as reported by Us Weekly. “She sees snippets. [That said] it’s really good, I think, for your children to see your work and understand what it is. Then it’s theirs as well, so I talk about it.”

MoreNicole Kidman Undergoes Her Biggest Transformation Yet for New Film

Kidman won an Emmy for her portrayal of her character, Celeste Wright, and her daughter's not going to stop pestering her to watch anytime soon, as season two of Big Little Lies will be back in 2019.

Kidman shares two daughters with her country music star husband, fellow Aussie Keith Urban. She also shares a son and daughter, who are both adults, with former husband Tom Cruise.

But of her younger children, Sunday Rose is 10 and Faith is 7, so we're guessing it's Sunday Rose Kidman was referring to.

We melted when we spotted this photo of Sunday Rose as a newborn with her parents in Kidman's Instagram feed:

But both daughters apparently love to watch their famous mom on the big — and little — screen. “I have three films coming out, but to my children, Aquaman is the most important film, and the boys at [their] school are interested in me being in Aquaman, which to my daughter is really important right now,” Kidman added. “I said to her, ‘I hope I’m in it.’ She said, ‘I hope you’re in it. I told everybody.’

No pressure, Mom.

Kidman is clearly an adoring parent; she and her girls even rocked out together at a recent Taylor Swift concert.

Kidman captioned a shot of herself with Swift: “Thank you @taylorswift for your kindness to my girls and me. Beautiful woman inside and out…and your talent is extraordinary.”

Mandy Moore Hints That This Is Us’ Jack & Rebecca Origin Story Is No Fairytale

Although This Is Us did deliver a little closure last season, it also left most of us with even more questions about the Pearson clan. And with the season three countdown dwindling, star Mandy Moore just dropped a bit of a bombshell — yes, we will be getting more answers, but they may not be the ones we want to hear.

More: This Is Us Season 3 Will Feature a Major First for Jack & Rebecca

Thanks to comments made by series creator Dan Fogelman, we know that the upcoming season will look back at the beginning of America’s favorite TV couple: Rebecca and Jack Pearson.

“It’s extremely good television to watch these two have their origin story,” Fogelman told EW. “It’s always interesting after you lose somebody — which we kind of feel like we did with Jack this past season — to almost go in and put in those old videotapes and watch them at much earlier stage of life. And I think that’s what this feels like.”

A sneak peek snapshot from season three depicting the couple’s past shows stars Milo Ventimiglia (Jack) and Mandy Moore (Rebecca) apparently on a date at a fair of some sort. Holding a half-eaten candy apple and wearing a raspberry beret, Moore looks predictably adorable. In a charcoal peacoat and clean-shaven face, a handsome Ventimiglia looks smitten.

It would be easy to stare at the picture and imagine a perfect world in which Jack and Rebecca ride carnival rides and live happily ever after. Of course, we know better — the Great Crock-Pot Debacle last season confirmed poor Jack meets an untimely fate.

Still, why wouldn’t fans romanticize these two? That’s part of their appeal. Even when they’ve had their bumps in the road, they seem so well-suited to each other. But, if Moore’s recent remarks to EW are any indication, the beginning of Mr. and Mrs. Pearson may not have been the starry-eyed storybook love we’ve all been hyping it up to be.

More: Is Everyone Watching  This Is U s  Without Me?

“People expect it to be a straight line to finding one another and living happily ever after — and that may not be the case,” Moore teased.

Welp, that does it. We need to go ahead and restock our chocolate, box wine and Kleenex stockpile. Although, to be fair, we expect the NBC series will balance out all of the tear-jerking moments with some trademark humor too.

This feels especially true when you consider that Rebecca and Jack aren’t the only ones getting an origin story this season. On July 31, NBC shared a photo of a blue index card reading “Toby Origin Story” pinned to a storyboard.

“Oh, we are going there!” the show’s IG captioned the photo. And you know what? We aren’t mad. While there will likely be a few sad skeletons in Toby’s closet, you can’t focus on Chris Sullivan (who plays Toby) and expect it not to be funny.

It won’t be long before fans find out for sure how much they’ll be laughing until they cry... and straight-up bawling. This Is Us returns to our screens on Sept. 24 on NBC.

This Bachelor Baby Is Obsessed With His Brand-New Brother

The Bachelor's Catherine Lowe (née Giudici) says her son Samuel (with once-Bachelor Sean Lowe) is "obsessed" with his brand-new little brother, Isaiah. That's OK, Samuel; we're kind of obsessed with the show your parents met on. We'll keep your secret if you keep ours, little man.

Lowe recently posted a photo of both boys attached to her with the caption, "Very always touching." LOL.

Her Instagram feed is full of pics of the whole Lowe clan. They a rare success in the Bachelor franchise. We're thinking they might be the most low-drama pairing the Bachelor's ever produced, in fact. The Lowes got engaged on the season 17 finale of The Bachelor back in 2012 — and the couple is happier than ever, living a low-key (if busy) family life with their two sons. Samuel is 13 months old; Isaiah is 3 months old.

Catherine Lowe told Us Weekly, “Samuel is obsessed with Isaiah. [Samuel is] very loving on [Isaiah] and wants to be around him and asks where he is all the time…Isaiah is now getting to the point where he’s being more present and he looks around and whenever he sees Samuel, he just follows him all over the place.”

She also spoke candidly about life as a working mom and needing to travel without the boys. Spoiler alert: You won't find any mom guilt issues here, which we love.

“I definitely don’t feel guilty. I don’t feel guilty. I just miss them,” Catherine Lowe said in the same interview. “We are such a crazy foursome that we’re always together. We’re very, very blessed in that way that, during the day, we both work from home and we get to spend a lot of quality time with the kids, so when I leave, it does make me miss them, but I definitely don’t feel guilt about it because I know who I let them with and what they’re doing is probably more fun than what they’ [sic] be doing with me anyway.”

MoreJade Roper & Tanner Tolbert of Bachelor Nation Welcome Baby Girl

And guess what? There may be more Bachelor babies on the way for the family. Sean Lowe told Us, “We’ve talked about adoption before and how great that can be. We may or may not be done with biological children, but I think we’re going to adopt at least one more child.”

He added, "I love having two kids. It’s nice because with two kids you don’t stretch yourself too thin. You can show up at all the baseball games and dance recitals and things like that. But I would like to try to see if we could get a little girl that looks like mama.”

The Best Birth Control Options if You've Already Been Pregnant & Given Birth

$

So, you're no longer taking a daily birth control pill because you literally just had a baby and haven't needed it for a while. Or maybe you're just looking into new formats of pregnancy prevention (and there are a bunch!). We looked over the birth control options that are currently available to see what's best for those who have already been pregnant and given birth, because once you have a baby, your life definitely changes.

Birth control you don't deal with every day

Dr. Elizabeth Sauter, who has been a practicing OB-GYN for over 30 years, knows that new moms have challenges they might not have faced before their child was born. "By far, the best birth control options are long-acting methods," she tells SheKnows.

For one thing, you don't have to think about them every single day, which is good, because if you're not getting enough sleep or are catching z's when you can, you may not be able to pop a pill every day at around the same time.

Also, there are other benefits to be had when you're on a birth control method that doesn't require any day-of fiddling around, such as what's required with condoms or diaphragms.

"Long-acting birth control is great when you want to be spontaneous — and have limited opportunities due to children," she says. We feel Sauter on that one, because once Baby arrives and continues to grow (and can open doors!), romantic interludes aren't always an option, and when they are, it's nice not to have to worry about birth control, because you're already covered.

Long-acting methods can take many forms, and as their name suggests, they don't come in the form of a small pill you have to remember to take at around the same time every day. Here are a couple of recommended options.

More: 6 Common Side Effects of the Pill & How to Counteract Them

IUD

The intrauterine device is a small T-shaped device that's positioned inside a uterus. "IUD are much easier to insert once one has given birth, especially vaginally," Sauter explains. There are two main types of IUDs — they're either copper or hormonal. Both provide years of birth control (copper IUDs can last around 10 years, and hormonal IUDs can last three to five years before they need replaced), she adds.

Implantable rod

Another long-term birth control is an implantable rod. These are thin, flexible rods that are inserted under the skin in your arm. Protection from pregnancy lasts around three years.

Other types of birth control

If you're not ready to commit to a long-term birth control device, here are a few other options.

Vaginal ring

A vaginal ring is inserted and kept inside the vagina and should be removed after three weeks. After that, you take a one-week break, then start again with a new ring. It delivers the same hormones that traditional combination birth control pills do, but might not be recommended for breastfeeding moms (ask your doctor!).

Birth control patch

This is a thin plastic patch that you wear on your skin that releases two types of hormones, similar again to the combination birth control pill. As such, your doctor may opt for another method if you're still breastfeeding.

Oral contraceptives

If a person is breastfeeding, Dr. Sheila Chhutani, a physician, usually recommends progestin-only pills, but moms who aren't nursing can take the combination pill. However, there are some definite drawbacks. "The pills are finicky because of a short half-life and need to be taken at the same time every day," she tells SheKnows. "If [a user is] more than three hours off, they need a backup method."

More: 6 Things That Happen When You Ditch Hormonal Birth Control

Condoms

The condom (as in the one that goes on a penis) is an excellent choice for breastfeeding moms, as it doesn't contain any hormones can affect your milk supply. It's also a good option for those who don't want to look into the more invasive types above or for those who have experienced side effects from other types of birth control. The caveat is that it's not as effective as other types, but that effectiveness rises with consistent, proper use, which means one has to be used as directed every time.

Work with your doctor

Of course, your doctor will know your personal health history and can make recommendations based on your own needs. Most hormonal birth control methods will have some side effects, which can include headaches, breakthrough bleeding, weight gain or sore breasts (of course, this list is not exhaustive — see your doctor for more information).

However, it's nice to know that there are varied options, from ones that need to be attended to on a daily basis to those that will last a literal decade. "New moms have a lot on their plate and don't need to worry about birth control on a daily basis," Chhutani says. "Thankfully, with so many options, they don't have to."

Aldi's Pumpkin Spice Liqueur Returns This Fall — but There's a Catch

Why drive to Starbucks to pick up a PSL when you can make one at home? At least, that seems to be Aldi's approach, as the German grocer is adding a pumpkin spice-flavored liqueur to its shelves this fall.

More: Aldi Plans to Add 700 More Grocery Stores Nationwide & Increase Its Fresh Food Items

According to Good Housekeeping U.K., Aldi's seasonal Pumpkin Spice Cream Liqueur makes its return to U.K. stores Oct. 4. However, there's no word from Aldi on whether it'll make its way to the U.S. — so keep your fingers crossed.

Pumpkin Spice Cream Liqueur

"Aldi's beautifully rich and creamy liqueur has been infused with classic pumpkin spice flavors, and is balanced by hints of cinnamon and nutmeg," the product description reads. It even suggests adding the liqueur to your pumpkin spice latte "for an extra kick," or simply enjoying it on its own over ice.

Last fall, for a limited time, Aldi stores here in the U.S. did have their own version of the liqueur, O'Donnell's Pumpkin Spice, which was priced at $9 per bottle. So chances are high we'll see it again.

According to Refinery 29, the product is described as "fresh Irish Cream blended with flavors of pumpkin pie and spices." In addition to drinking it straight over ice, it was suggested you "[e]njoy [it] straight, over ice, over ice cream, or with your favorite dessert."

Here's to hoping it will be on offer again this year — because we'll definitely be purchasing a bottle or two.

The New Mom's Guide to Piercings & Tattoos

$

Becoming a parent might not seem like the most obvious time to get new ink or a new piercing, but it’s actually a fairly common reaction.

“A lot of new parents find themselves feeling like, 'This giant thing just happened, and I feel like I should be different. How?' In a way, sometimes getting tattooed acknowledges that,” Scott Campbell, co-owner of Saved Tattoo, tells SheKnows. Campbell says many, many people get their first-ever tattoo to honor their child.

So, if you’re a new or expecting mom who wants to get a piercing or tattoo during this exciting time, what should you know health-wise?

More: Olivia Wilde's New Tattoo & The Meaning Behind It

First, choose your timing wisely. Doing any kind of body modification during pregnancy is not generally allowed. “My shop has a policy of not tattooing pregnant women,” says Campbell. “It’s not something there’s a lot of research on — we’re more going off urban legend and hearsay and what the old-timers taught us — but it’s a very long-standing part of tattoo ethics,” he explains.

Bruno Levy of Bandit Studio says they also do not tattoo pregnant women. In addition to concerns over infection, Campbell tells SheKnows there’s also a risk that the stress and adrenaline rush of the process will trigger labor, which can be very dangerous.

The rules about piercing are the same. “We just don’t want to risk any kind of infection since the baby shares mom’s blood stream,” Keylan Levine, a piercer at New York Adorned, tells SheKnows.

Generally, there is no additional care required for healed piercings during pregnancy, but if you have a navel piercing, you’ll probably want to take out the jewelry. “If you leave the jewelry in, that can misshape the piercing,” explains Levine. “But as long as the piercing is healed, you can generally put the ring back in once you’ve had the baby.” Levine also says — because for some people the piercing will close up without something in place — if you’re concerned about an existing navel piercing, contact your piercer, and they can help outfit you with a safe plastic insert to maintain the hole without constriction or discomfort.

More: How Did the Start of Middle School Become My Mom Crisis?

After delivery, the guidelines for getting tattoos and piercings while breastfeeding are a little different. “I’ve never heard of any adverse effects from tattooing and breastfeeding,” says Campbell. “Aside from the philosophy that the emotional state of the the mom can get passed on chemically through her milk.” Campbell explains that getting a tattoo can sometimes cause very high anxiety, so if you subscribe to that theory about breast milk’s emotional properties, it might not be the best time to get inked.

“But generally, people who are breastfeeding are not going to get an enormous five-, six- or seven-hour tattoo session. Usually, moms are profoundly moved by the new chapter of life they just entered, and they want something small to honor this bundle of cuteness. With a 20- or 30-minute tattoo like that, I personally don’t think that amount of stress would affect the breast milk in any significant way.”

Piercing-wise, breastfeeding is not a great time to get anything new. “I’ve been piercing for 15 years, and I know from clients that the hormonal response to breastfeeding can cause swelling in piercings [that aren’t fully healed],” says Levine. This can delay healing further and make the process more complicated, so it’s best to wait. For most piercings, the Association of Professional Piercers recommends a three-month waiting period after delivery to get a new piercing done to allow the body to return to “hormonal equilibrium.”

Nipple piercings, of course, likely require a longer wait (until breastfeeding is over, that is). It’s not that they are bad: “In our collective, massive experience, we have no awareness of even a single case of a woman who wished to breast feed and could not as a result of having had a nipple piercing,” says the official statement of APP. Most women just remove their jewelry and are able to feed without complication. But while nursing with a nipple piercing is totally possible — as Levine explains, the holes essentially just create additional pores for milk to come out of — to get a new nipple piercing, the APP suggests moms wait three months after finishing nursing, which would mean 15 months after delivery if you’re following the American Academy of Pediatrics guideline to nurse for one year.

Campbell had some last words of advice for new parents considering a portrait of their babe for their ink: “Babies all look the same in tattoos!” he says with a laugh. “If you want their face, wait 'til they get older and have more distinctive features.”

Emmy Rossum Reveals Her Shameless Exit Is Coming, & She's Not Happy About It

It’s a sad day for fans of the hit Showtime series Shameless. In a long and deeply emotional letter to fans, star Emmy Rossum broke the news that she will not be reprising her role as Fiona Gallagher after the upcoming ninth season.

Rossum, who's been with the show since it premiered in 2011, took to Facebook to express her feelings about the exit — or at least try to. “It’s a hard thing to put into words, feelings,” she started, “But I’m going to try.”

More: 7 Times We Wanted to Be Best Friends With Emmy Rossum

Before we go any further, we feel it’s only fair to warn you that the following excerpts from Rossum’s letter might make you tear up a little. Or a lot. Or bawl. You’ll get no judgment from us.

Rossum starts by touching on the typical work life of an actor: one that is constantly in motion. It wasn’t until Shameless, she explains, that she realized she likes standing still.

“Until Shameless came into my life 8 years ago, I led that kind of transient wonderful life of an actor. And I never realized how much I actually craved the kind of continuity that this show has given me. And given all of us in the crew. Season after season I’m amazed that our same crew comes back. And it’s not just because it’s a wonderfully written, wonderfully layered show. There are these real connections, real friendships that bring us back season after season after season,” she wrote.

More: Emmy Rossum Marries Mr. Robot Creator Sam Esmail

Unlike Fiona, Rossum grew up as an only child and craved the chaos inherent in a big family. Being a part of the dysfunctional but fiercely loving Gallagher family has given her that.

“We’ve watched the kids grow up into the strong, talented, independent human beings that they are. I taught Emma to shave her legs. I was there when Ethan learned to drive,” she revealed. “Shanola and Jeremy and Joan and Bill danced at my wedding in New York last year. Our fearless leader John Wells thankfully held Sam and me up on those rickety chairs during the hora. I’ve spent the Jewish holy days in temple with David Nevins and his wonderful wife and kids. It really feels like a family.”

And while saying goodbye to her cast and crew is clearly difficult for Rossum, saying goodbye to this character she’s inhabited for so long seems to be equally torturous for the actor, who calls playing Fiona “a gift.”

“There are few characters — female or otherwise — as layered and dynamic. She is a mother lion, fierce, flawed and sexually liberated. She is injured, vulnerable, but will never give up. She is living in an economic depression, but refuses to be depressed. She is resourceful. She is loyal. She is brave. I knew it the second I read the pilot script, this was different, this was special,” said Rossum.

Before signing off, Rossum hinted at that proverbial acting idiom, “The show must go on.” Although, as fans, we can hardly imagine the Gallagher world without Fiona in it, Rossum reminds us that there's still much story left for the family to tell. She just won’t be a part of it.

“I will always be rooting for my family,” she said. “Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”

BRB, just gotta go bawl our eyes out.

It's unclear at this point why Rossum decided to leave the show. As reported by Deadline, Rossum found herself locked in tense negotiations with the production studio prior to the eighth season. Before reaching a settlement that would provide parity for her and William H. Macy, Rossum had been holding out for a higher salary than her costar.

On Thursday, showrunner John Wells issued a statement lamenting the show's loss.

"Emmy Rossum will forever be part of the Shameless family," he said. "She has been integral to the show’s success, from her wonderful portrayal of Fiona to her leadership role on set, as well as directing multiple episodes of the series. We are hard at work now creating a season nine finale for Shameless which we hope will provide a Gallagher-worthy sendoff for Fiona that honors the great work Emmy has done. It is always bittersweet when an ensemble member decides to move out of the proverbial house, but our door will always remain open for Fiona to return home for a visit, or to move back in. I look forward to continuing the stories of this wildly unpredictable family and all of us on Shameless will miss Emmy and her wonderful Fiona.”

Hey, at least that means there's a chance Rossum could return in the future. Plus, we still have her final season yet to watch. And happily, she already has her next big gigs lined up. In 2019, she’ll star alongside Liam Neeson and Laura Dern in the revenge action flick Hard Powder. She is also currently attached to a limited series about Hollywood icon Angelyne that Rossum's husband, Sam Esmail, created.

Carrie made no apologies for her loyalty to designer footwear — most notably Manolo Blahnik’s sexy heels and Jimmy Choo pointy-toe pumps. The collection is totally derivative of her character’s taste, and some styles even closely resemble specific pairs she wore as Carrie on the show.

Tess Holliday Opens Up About Struggling With Postpartum Depression

Tess Holliday is outspoken about many things: From body image to motherhood, there isn't much the model won't speak about, and this week, she opened up to Cosmopolitan about her struggles with postpartum depression.

More: My Postpartum Depression Didn't Look Like What I Expected

Holliday gave birth to her son, Bowie, in June 2016, but she didn't begin experiencing the symptoms of PPD until January 2017. According to Holliday, "[I]t felt like the water was boiling over and things were coming to the top again," and this feeling didn't go away.

In fact, Holliday struggled with postpartum depression well into the spring of 2018.

"I remember very vividly driving in the car with Bowie and I thought to myself, 'I wish I could just disappear," she told Cosmopolitan. "I wish I could vanish.' It felt at that point like I was causing everyone around me so much pain. It felt like a never-ending black hole. I was so tired of hurting... I just didn’t want to be here any more."

The good news is Holliday is still here, and she was able to get help. In fact, in May, Holliday wrote an Instagram post crediting friends, family and antidepressants for helping her get through:

"I’m grateful to have support in my life, friends to talk to, but it got so bad that I had to take action & by doing so it potentially saved my life...I guess what I’m saying is, moms/parental figures: you have to take time to care for YOU. Don’t let it get to the point mine did where you feel like you’re losing your mind. Don’t think because your child isn’t a 'baby' that you couldn’t still be suffering from PPD, because I’m here to tell you, you most definitely can. Ask for help, talk to someone, find a support group or hell, message me. You aren’t alone & you don’t need to suffer alone."

And Holliday is right. You are not alone. According to the American Psychological Association, 1 in 7 women will experience some sort of perinatal/postpartum mood disorder. As such, it is important to know the symptoms — which include sadness, anxiety, irritability, changes in eating and/or sleeping behaviors and scary racing thoughts to name a few — and to know how to get help, i.e., talk to your friends, your family, your doctors.

Talk to anyone who will listen.

Mario Lopez's & Tiffani Thiessen's Kids Watch Saved by the Bell, We Feel Old

If you're an '80s babe, you've probably watched Saved by the Bell. The sitcom — which followed the fictional lives of Zack Morris, Kelly Kapowski, Samuel "Screech" Powers, Albert Clifford "A.C." Slater, Jessica "Jessie" Myrtle Spano, and Lisa Marie Turtle — was a staple in the late '80s and early '90s, and today, it remains a series most of us remember with fondness. But did you realize the show is nearly three decades old? (Yes, three decades.) And if that makes you feel old, you're not alone: Mario Lopez and Tiffani Thiessen feel the exact same way.

More: Nicole Kidman Talks Letting Her Daughter Watch Big Little Lies

In fact, on Thursday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Lopez and Thiessen talked about that and their upcoming anniversary.

"Oh, my God. I can't believe I'm that old," Lopez said. "I thought it was 20 years since Saved by the Bell. It's 30 years since Saved by the Bell."

"I know," Thiessen interjected on the show. "We are old. We are really old."

But it isn't just the calendar making this pair feel old; Lopez's and Thiessen's children now watch the show.

That said, even though Thiessen's 8-year-old daughter, Harper, really enjoyed what she saw, she has only watched what Thiessen told Lopez was a "tiny, tiny bit" of the show.

"I was OK with season one," Thiessen said on the show. "But then, after that, when kissing started happening, I was like, 'No, no, no. We're done.'"

However, Lopez's children, 7-year-old daughter Gia and 4-year-old son Dominic, didn't feel the same. Lopez told Thiessen they were "not feeling it" and were more concerned with why Daddy's hair looked like that.

These Foods Can Help Combat Autoimmune Conditions

$

Whether you’ve been newly diagnosed or have been living with an autoimmune disorder for a number of years, you’re most likely eager to gain some control over your flare-ups.

Food in particular plays an important part in achieving optimal health by providing the essential nutrients your body and immune system need to thrive, which is why you might want to choose wisely when it comes to the foods you eat since your diet might be able to help with the severity of your autoimmune flare-ups. But where to start?

“Though there’s no evidence that any particular food will prevent or trigger an autoimmune condition, there are some key nutrients to consider,” Meghan Lyle, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, tells SheKnows. “Some autoimmune conditions can produce inflammation, and some chronic non-autoimmune conditions also result in chronic levels of inflammation. We’re still gaining understanding of how dietary pattern impacts inflammation, but it is clear that there is a role for diet.”

More: Is the Anti-inflammatory Diet for You? Why You Should Try It & How to Start

If you’re having trouble with navigating which nutritional advice to take to help combat your autoimmune disorder, read on to learn which foods could help ease your next inflammation trigger and help you live your best life.

Eat more fibrous veggies

If you have an autoimmune disorder, the foods you eat have “to both reduce excessive inflammation as well as repair the underlying tissue damage that is causing a constant source of that inflammation,” says Dr. Barry Sears a leading authority in anti-inflammatory nutrition, author of the Zone Diet book series and president of the nonprofit Inflammation Research Foundation.

He tells SheKnows he recommends foods rich in fermentable fiber, as it appears “that many autoimmune diseases have their origin in the gut, and fermentable fiber is critical for maintaining gut health.” Sears also suggests eating at least eight servings per day of non-starchy vegetables — like cauliflower, broccoli and green beans — to provide fermentable fiber to reduce a leaky gut.

Similarly, Lyle recommends a diet rich of bright-colored fruits and veggies. “The richly colored array of fruits and vegetables gain their color from key phytonutrients. Some appear to modulate inflammation, others support the body’s natural detoxification systems, and others have a role in maintaining optimal vascular function among other things,” she says. “We know that a diet very high in richly colored fruits and vegetables can reduce inflammation and enhance immune cell function.”

Next time you’re at the grocery store, reach for foods like colored peppers, leafy green lettuce, eggplant, radishes and carrots.

Include omega-3 fatty acids

According to both Sears and Lyle, your foods should also be rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA.

“Omega-3 fatty acids are key mediators of inflammation and tend to be low in the average person’s diet,” says Lyle.

As for why they work, “[These foods] help to promote the formation of pro-resolution hormones that reverse inflammatory responses,” says Sears, who recommends consuming at least five grams of omega-3 fatty acids — EPA and DHA — per day.

Plant oils, such as flaxseed oil, nuts and seeds as well as fish, especially cold-water fatty fish, like salmon and tuna, are examples of foods all rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

Don’t forget polyphenols

Sears also recommends reaching for foods rich in polyphenols “to activate the genes that can repair the tissue damage that is causing the constant generation of inflammation.”

Polyphenols have antioxidant properties and protect plants from ultraviolet radiation. They can be found in foods like berries, dark chocolate, beets, pecans and most spices.

Check out selenium

“Selenium is critical to thyroid health [and] DNA synthesis and serves as a key antioxidant in addition to being involved in many other enzymatic reactions throughout the body,” Lyle says.

A trace mineral, selenium helps your body produce antioxidant enzymes, which help to prevent cell damage.

Brazil nuts are one of the best sources of selenium. It can also be found in eggs, lean meats and poultry, and fish, including yellowfin tuna, which is another excellent source of selenium, she adds.

Foods to avoid

But what should people with autoimmune conditions stay away from?

“Though we can’t say for sure that a particular food can be causative in immune disease, there are foods to limit for an overall anti-inflammatory approach and ensure the immune system is robustly supported,” says Lyle. “There is evidence that a diet high in red and processed meat, full-fat dairy, refined grains, saturated fats, added sugar and trans fat can promote inflammation.”

Along the same lines, Sears recommends avoiding high-glycemic carbs, especially refined carbs, such as grains and starches, as “they will increase insulin levels. And you should also avoid omega-6 and saturated fats, as they will increase inflammation levels.”

Grocery shopping doesn’t need to be difficult

As Lyle points out, eating the recommended foods doesn’t mean you have to overhaul everything today. “Even taking a few small steps to build on what you already do can be huge,” she says. “If you’re not eating fish, see if you can incorporate it at least once a week. If you’re eating only one vegetable per day, strive for two — one at lunch, one at dinner.”

And while there isn’t a cure to autoimmune disorders, Sears says that your inflammation-fighting diet needn’t be boring.

“Imagine you are going to Italy and just eating everything except the bread, pasta and rice. No one has ever complained about eating grilled vegetables [and] grilled fish and having fresh fruit for dessert."

The Search For the Next Bachelor Is Over — But Who Is It?

There's huge news in Bachelor Nation: ABC has chosen its next contestant for The Bachelor, but the network isn't quite ready to reveal exactly who will be handing out roses next season. ABC has narrowed down the pool of potential contestants to three of the men who were eliminated on Becca Kufrin's season of The Bachelorette—but who's it going to be?

More: Ashley Iaconetti Reveals How Jared Haibon Made Bachelor Nation History

A source with information on the selection process told Us Weekly, "it came down to a three-way tie" between Jason Tartick, Colton Underwood and Blake Horstmann. Multiple sources told the outlet that ABC asked their choice if he would be the next Bachelor, and he said yes. Us notes that Tartick was a fan favorite and that fans also reacted well to Horstmann, who was the runner-up on Kufrin's season.

When Us tweeted a link to the story, fans reacted immediately to the news. Most of them seemed to agree on one thing: they do not want Underwood to be the next star of The Bachelor

One person replied to Us' tweet about the choice, writing, "Bachelor Nation does not want Colton." They included the hashtag #notmybachelor and an animated gif of Simon Cowell saying, "It's a no from me."

Another fan wrote, "At first I wanted GROCERY JOE for bachelor but now that I know COLTON is a contender I will literally take ANYONE else even Juan Pablo again." Ouch.

Several fans compared Underwood to Arie Luyendyk Jr., whose controversial decision to take back the final rose he presented to Kufrin in order to choose the runner-up, Lauren Burnham, has made him a villain in the eyes of Bachelor Nation.

"I'd rather watch a 24/7 livestream of Lauren and Arie saying 'wow' back and forth to each other than have Colton as the Bachelor," wrote one fan. They even changed their Twitter display name to read, #anyonebutcoltonforbachelor.

Several fans also criticized Underwood's potential casting while showing their support for their faves, Tartick and Horstmann.

One fan tweeted an animated gif of Horstmann in the shower, writing, "IT SHOULD BE HIM!" with clapping emojis between each word. They continued, "He even has the hot shower scene down!" and included the hashtag #BlakeforBachelor.

Another fan was less harsh toward Underwood, but still doesn't want him to be the next Bachelor. They wrote, "Excuse me, sir. AMERICA DESERVES JASON. Don't get me wrong, I love Colton, BUT HE'S #notmybachelor !!!!! I vote for @Jason_Tartick !!!!!!!!"

Bachelor Nation has definitely spoken. When The Bachelor premieres on ABC in January 2019, if its star is Underwood, fans will be extremely unhappy. They've made it clear that they'll go for basically anyone else.

11 Times Alexis Ohanian Was #HusbandGoals

We can't get enough of Serena Williams, but you know what? We are also developing a pretty big soft spot for her husband, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian. Until recently, Ohanian has been more of a fixture in the world of startups and emerging technology, but thanks to him and Williams bringing their relationship into the public eye (beginning with their adorable engagement announcement in December 2016), Ohanian has been embraced by those of us who love Williams and love to see love thriving.

We've embraced him even more, though, because Ohanian has made it known that he is both a supportive, active husband and father (he and Williams' daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., was born in September 2017) by consistently showing love for the two main ladies in his life on social media. He is consistently cheering Williams on through his Twitter while also getting preciously sentimental with Olympia on Instagram

Basically, we're deeming Ohanian #HusbandGoals, and if you need any further proof, you can keep scrolling and see the evidence for yourself.

6. He knows how to have fun while flying solo

Ohanian embraces all the good things in life, and sometimes that includes ice cream and sightseeing while flying solo.

7. He can be a total goofball too

Ohanian never misses an opportunity to show that he is an ardent supporter of Williams and her greatness, frequently quoting others who comment on that same topic just to prove his point.

9. He's so sentimental

Ohanian bringing his family back to the place where he and Williams had their first date is the kind of attention to detail mixed with sentimentality that we need in our lives.

Ever Wonder Who Gets to Test Sex Toys? Now, It Could Be You

$

Before most new products are put out into the world, they're rigorously tested, including by potential consumers who provide feedback for the manufacturers. This can range from tasting new ice cream flavors to shoe insoles to features in a car. But what about products that are more... personal? Yes, we're talking about sex toys. And yes, there's a way for you to earn the coveted role of sex toy tester.

This opportunity comes courtesy of Dame Products — a company founded by two women and committed to making well-engineered sex toys to help close the pleasure gap. Earlier this week, they launched Dame Labs, a research arm of the company that focuses on getting feedback from everyday people (like us!) for its products and making it available to the public.

According to a release from Dame Products emailed to SheKnows, Dame Labs will be a brand extension in the same vein as similar programs at OkCupid and Casper, which will allow anyone to be a part of the company’s product development process, but this time, for sex toys.

More: Why the Pleasure Gap Is a Gender Equality Issue

"We've always done a ton of research when it comes to our products, but by making Dame Labs more public-facing, we're going to be able to get a wider diversity of respondents — which will of course help us create even better products in the coming years," Dame Products CEO Alex Fine tells SheKnows.

Signing up is easy. First, visit the Dame Labs website and take a survey. Based on your responses, the company will send respondents who meet their current research criteria follow-up surveys, which will gage their interest and engagement. Then, when a product is in development, the participants may be selected for prototype testing and reviews.

Dame Labs participants will give the company feedback on everything from the colors of the products to button placement to vibration speeds, in addition to being tapped to help come up with ideas for new products.

And why is this important? I mean, aside from the possibility of getting to try out cutting-edge sex toys, the fact that we're getting to the point of being more open about pleasure is definitely a step in the right direction.

More: The Best Gifts to Help Close the Pleasure Gap

"I'm really looking forward to creating spaces that allow for people to share intimate narratives and really having more honest conversations with more humans," Fine explains. "The topic has been taboo for so long, so creating welcoming, safe and trusting places to foster discussion is essential and exciting."

Pediatricians Announce Big Changes to the Guidelines for Rear-Facing Car Seats

$

If you have a young child, take note: car seat guidelines are changing — again — and this change is big. In fact, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies should remain in rear-facing car seats until they reach the height and weight limit for the seat, at which time they can safely be turned around.

More: 7 Surprising Tips to Surviving the First 6 Months of Parenthood

The updated guidelines differ quite a bit from previous recommendations, which stated that children should remain rear facing until they are/were 2 years old. However, according to the AAP, age is no longer a factor. Instead, infants and toddlers should ride rear-facing "as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed."

Of course, this means many children will remain rear facing even after their second birthday (and, in most cases, well past their third). However, the decision to update the recommendations was based on new data.

“The last time this policy was reevaluated there had not been a lot of new data,” Dr. Ben Hoffman, chairperson for the AAP’s council on injury, violence and poison protection, told NBC News“But in the last year, there has been a significant change in what we know about the relative protection of car seats.”

As such, car seat recommendations were changed accordingly.

But rear-facing car seat safety isn't the only car seat safety a parent should keep in mind. Once a child is turned around, they should remain in a forward-facing seat up to that seat’s weight and height limits, usually 60 pounds or more and once a child outgrows their forward-facing seat, they should be moved into a belt-positioning booster seat until the lap and shoulder belts fit properly.

More: Here's What You Should Do With an Expired Car Seat

What's more, children under 13 years of age should always be seated in the rear of the vehicle.

Of course, this change may be disappointing for some, as many parents cannot wait to turn their child's car seat from rear-facing to forward-facing. (It is a big milestone, after all.) However, it is imperative that parents follow these new guidelines, as proper car and/or booster seat use can help decrease the risk of death or serious injury by over 70 percent, according to the AAP.
