Disneyland Will Soon Offer Adult Beverages (& We Can't Wait)

The happiest place on Earth is about to get a little happier. According to Disney Parks Blog, Disneyland will soon be selling alcoholic beverages.

More: Your Next Trip to Disney World Is Going to Be More Expensive

Of course, most Disney fans know that Disneyland is a historically dry park. (Walt Disney wanted it that way to preserve the wholesome, family-friendly feel.) However, when Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens next year, one of it's eateries — Oga’s Cantina — will offer beer, wine and outer space-themed cocktails, making it the first time in Disneyland's 63-year history that alcohol will be served.

When asked what prompted them to arrive at this decision, park spokeswoman Liz Jaeger told the Orange County Register, “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be a completely immersive true-to-story experience. Given our commitment to offering fans an immersive cantina experience, we felt this was an opportunity to offer alcohol and non-alcohol based beverages in the context of the story.”

That said, Disney is no stranger to liquid libations. In Anaheim, California, Club 33 has been serving alcohol for years, as has Disneyland's sister park, Disney's California Adventure, and in Orlando, Florida, all four parks offer adult beverages. However, the remainder of Disneyland will remain dry.

Guests will have to consume their beverages inside the cantina.

That said, if the Disney Parks Blog is accurate, guests will want to stay within its walls, as the cantina will be an experience unto itself — with unique music, colorful characters and, of course, shady business, Oga’s Cantina will serve "pilots, bounty hunters, smugglers, locals and galactic travelers alike."

6 Ways to Bring More Positive Energy Into Your Home

Have you ever walked into your home and just felt... down? It might be an untidy space or that the air feels stale or that you can't recognize yourself in your decor — any number of things can make our homes feel like less than the safe, welcoming areas we want them to be. If you can't shake the feeling your home needs more positive energy, here are a few tips that can get the good vibrations going.

1. Salt lamps

Proponents of salt lamps say they produce positive ions, improve air quality and possibly improve allergies. These claims haven't been substantiated by science, but whether you buy into that or not, they inarguably do add a soft, warm light to a room that tends to make a room feel more cozy and peaceful. They’re best in spaces where you spend time in the evening, like the living room or bedroom.

More: 12 Ways to Detox Your Home

2. Infuse your home with essential oils

Bringing more positive energy to your home means engaging more of your senses. We live a lot of life in our heads, following our thoughts as they jump around. An easy way to reengage in the present moment is to focus on bringing your physical senses into play — and some scents even have research to back up their power. Lavender seems to help calm anxiety, as does jasmine, and peppermint seems to have an energizing effect. Put a few drops in a diffuser in a central area in your home or wherever you spend the most time.

More: 5 Ways to Boost Well-Being in Your Own Home

3. Create floor seating options

One technique that seems to help people feel more calm and present is grounding, or getting a sense of your physical self in the world, and being close to the Earth can help you do that. A simple way to feel more grounded is to have an area in your home where seating is on the floor, like a meditation cushion or a few blankets stacked on the ground. The change in location also helps you see your home from a new perspective. Place a few seats around a coffee table or find a corner in your bedroom or spare room where you can see yourself going when you need to center yourself.

4. Adopt houseplants

Houseplants remove chemicals and add oxygen to the air, which is definitely some positive energy, but they also seem to reduce physical and mental stress. Most of the benefits seem to come from leafy green tropical plants, so consider easy-to-care-for options like pothos, spider plants and ivy. Add a splash of green to every room in your house.

5. Hang up art you love

Art isn’t just about filling a blank wall — it can actually increase blood flow to the brain and be as powerful as falling in love according to 2011 research at University College of London. Take time finding art that makes you feel good. Try to match the art’s mood to the energy you’d like to create in your home, like peaceful art for the bedroom and energetic art for communal spaces.

6. Add meaningful trinkets

While clutter can add negativity, you can add good vibes to your home by purposefully putting meaningful objects in areas where you need a heartfelt reminder. Don't be afraid to take sentimental items out of the closet and display them. Maybe it’s a picture of someone who loves you near the mirror where you get ready in the morning, a small trinket from a place you felt happy and content on your bedside table or a set of tarot cards that help you get to know yourself a little better. Making meaningful objects part of your decor helps make it feel safe, which can add to the positive vibes.

Cameron Diaz's Husband Wrote Her the Sweetest Birthday Message

Cameron Diaz turned 46 years old on Thursday, and her husband, musician and producer Benji Madden, wanted the world to know how much he loves her and how grateful he is for their relationship. With a message this sweet, we're not even sure he needs to get her a cake.

More: The Real Reason Cameron Diaz Is "Retired" From Acting Right Now

Madden posted a sweet picture to his 391,000 Instagram followers, showing himself and Diaz bundled up in warm clothes, standing on the shore of a lake.

"Happy Birthday Baby There’s so much to write, so many things that make me so proud of you and how special you are," he wrote. "Thank you for being the best friend and partner to me and taking this journey of Marriage. The way you live your life everyday, and your compassion for the world shines thru in your eyes and you inspire me to want to be the best man I can be in this lifetime. You’re the realest. I’m so grateful to be yours Always&Forever, and to call you my One&Only. True Love." Aww!

Madden and Diaz seem to be at peak happiness four years into their whirlwind relationship, which involved about seven months of dating and a 17-day engagement. The Good Charlotte and Madden Brothers guitarist must be something very special, too. In the past, Diaz had been dubious about the institution of marriage

Although Madden's Instagram feed is mostly a parade of pictures depicting his rocker lifestyle, this isn't the first time he's wished his wife a happy birthday on social media. Last year he posted a similarly sweet picture and message.

The message read, "Happy Birthday to my beautiful Wife, You're my best friend and I'm so thankful for you, sometimes I just want to tell the world. Generous, Kind, Compassionate, Selfless, Humble, Thoughtful, Patient and Loyal. Just a few of the qualities I would use to describe who you are, consistently, every day. Thanks for being you, I'm a lucky guy. Here's to many more. I love you."

The couple met when Diaz's friend Nicole Richie introduced her to him in 2014 (Richie is married to Madden's bandmate and twin brother, Joel). Since they married, Diaz hasn't been taking acting roles or seeking the Hollywood spotlight much, although she was spotted celebrating her birthday in jeans and a T-shirt with Richie and Zoe Saldana earlier this week in a Los Angeles restaurant.

Our First Look at Jack Pearson in Vietnam on This Is Us Is Here

Today in news confirming that season three of This Is Us will rip your heart out (like the two seasons before it), we bring you a brief video posted by show creator Dan Fogelman on Twitter Thursday. The clip is short and doesn’t feature any dialogue, but true fans will understand the emotional depth of seeing Jack Pearson in Vietnam.

More: A Special This Is Us Episode Is Airing Before Season 3, So Mark Your Calendars

In the video, the Pearson family patriarch is seen flying in a helicopter in full military gear, holding a gun and scanning the land below for some unseen threat. On a purely surface level, this should tell fans that we’ll soon be heading into emotionally impactful territory — the Vietnam War isn’t a period of history you can tread lightly.

But for those of us who’ve caught every episode of this NBC drama, it also signals a particularly painful event in Jack’s life: the loss of his brother, Nicky. Up until this point, little has been said about Jack’s service in Vietnam, other than acknowledging that he survived and implying that his brother did not.

While we haven’t seen any adult Nicky flashbacks so far, fans “met” him during a childhood flashback. Later, a telling glimpse of the brothers as grownups came via an old photo of Jack and Nicky, both in uniform.

We now know Nicky will be featured in upcoming flashbacks. News broke earlier in August that actor Michael Angarano had been cast as Nicky, a recurring character. And since Fogelman has already revealed that the series will be “diving heavy” into Jack’s Vietnam experience, it’s not a stretch to say we may actually see how Nicky died — and how profoundly his death affected Jack.

“One of my writing heroes, Tim O’Brien, who wrote The Things They Carried and many other novels, I just finished writing an episode with him that’s an entire Vietnam Jack backstory episode, early in our season,” Fogelman told Deadline in July. “That’s going to be really incredibly exciting and unusual.”

That, coupled with the fact that Kevin and Beth’s cousin Zoe (who he’s dating) were both headed to Vietnam in the season two finale, makes us think our beloved This Is Us family will be doing some serious soul-searching soon.

And you know what that means, right? Tears. Lots and lots of tears. Get your bottle of wine and have a box of Kleenex handy, because the ugly crying over This Is Us resumes on Sept. 25.

The First Look at The Conners Has Arrived

Good news, Roseanne fans: The Conners are back, and while the new show will not feature the original series' namesake character, many fans cannot wait for this spinoff to air.

More: This Is What We Know About the Roseanne Spinoff & How the Internet Feels About It

Of course, we knew The Conners would be back. ABC announced plans for the spinoff series on June 21. However, early Friday morning, the network released a photo of the cast on set, and the image — which shows Sara Gilbert, Jayden Rey, Michael Fishman, Ames McNamara, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson and Emma Kenney gathered around the family's infamous kitchen table — is getting a lot of attention.

First behind-the-still of The Conners

That said, it's hard to ignore the elephant in the room: comedian Roseanne Barr's glaring absence. (Barr was terminated — and her show was canceled — after she wrote a racist tweet about former White House adviser Valerie Jarrett.) However, The Conners will confront the issue when it returns and, if a recent interview with Goodman is any indication, the show may take a dark path.

"I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead,” Goodman told The Sunday Times. ABC has not confirmed whether Goodman actually spoiled the big reveal of how Barr will be written off the show.

More: John Goodman May Have Just Spoiled a Key Detail on The Conners

An official synopsis for the show reads, "After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family — Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. — grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns — with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails."

The Conners will premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 8/7c on ABC.

What Sex and the City Got Right (& Wrong) About Consent

Throughout the six seasons of Sex and the City, there was, unsurprisingly, a lot of sex. Among talking about sex over plates of eggs at brunch, planning sexual conquests over cosmos or actually having sex, the four main characters were placed in countless sexual scenarios and positions. But re-watching the show in 2018, what's noticeably absent? Addressing the less-sexy aspects of dating and mating, like sexual assault and consent.

As Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, author of Sex and the City and Us, wrote recently in Vanity Fair: "Amid the four main characters’ many encounters with men, very few involve danger, nonconsensual sex or even harassment. Such incidents that do occur are played off as jokes, 'bad sex,' or occasions warranting no more than an eyeroll."

On the one hand, it was kind of nice to have a break from using sexual crimes as plot devices, but on the other hand, at least some mention of consent would have been nice. Also, Armstrong notes that the show chose to focus on how Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte saw sex as empowering and enjoyable rather than something they had to endure.

More: 6 Times Sex and the City Was a Primer in Women's Health

"Sex and the City leaned heavily on the lighter aspects of sex — the funny, the embarrassing and the fun — to great effect," Armstrong tells SheKnows. "It showed us that sex could be all of those things for women, and not just a scary place we should never go outside of marriage or even commitment."

The clearest example of a nonconsensual sexual encounter was when Julian, one of Carrie's editors at Vogue, dropped trou in the fashion closet, and she flees the scene.

Then there are other examples in which men's questionable behavior was overlooked as some sort of quirk or fetish, like when Carrie's artist friend — The Modelizer — films himself having sex with models without their consent. Another is when Miranda is dating a guy who gets off on getting caught during sex and knowingly initiates sex with her at his parents' house knowing they would walk in.

Overall, there's not much in the way of sexual negotiation on the show; as in, the sex usually just happens without much discussion or checking in with a partner regarding whether or not they're comfortable with what's about to happen.

More: All the Times  Seinfeld 's Elaine Benes Was a Champion for Women's Health

When you think about it, the most useful and important conversations surrounding sex and consent didn't take place in the bedroom — they took place over brunch. "It did teach women how to explore their own desires and boundaries, namely through the ways the women talked about sex with each other, which was revolutionary," Armstrong tells SheKnows. In her Vanity Fair article, she likens these chats to a modern-day yes/no/maybe list, where a person or couple actively considers a variety of sexual scenarios and determines whether or not they'd be interested in trying them.

What Sex and the City lacked in meaningful dialogue about consent, it made up for in making sex socially acceptable for women to have and talk about, so at least it was a (high-heeled) step in the right direction.

"Cosmos, Cupcakes & Consent: Sex and the City in the Age of #MeToo," a fundraiser for the #TimesUp Legal Defense Fund, will feature New York Times best-selling author Jennifer Keishin Armstrong and SheKnows health and sex editor, Elizabeth Yuko. It will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Spreadhouse Cafe in Manhattan. Tickets are available now.

Joe Biden Gets Choked Up While Speaking at John McCain's Funeral

They may have operated on different sides of the aisle, but Joe Biden and the late John McCain had a deep respect for one another — and that was more apparent than ever at McCain’s private memorial on Thursday, where Biden broke down in tears while eulogizing his dear friend.

In his touching speech, Biden underscored that the men’s political affiliations did not define their friendship. He thought of McCain, whom he met in the ‘70s, as a brother.

“I always thought of John as a brother, with a hell of a lot of family fights,” Biden said. “Out of this grew a great friendship that transcended whatever political difference we had, or later developed, because, above all, we understood the same thing — all politics is personal. It’s all about trust. I trusted John with my life, and I think he would trust me with his.”

Biden expounded on McCain's distinctive brand of politics, touching on the fact that his friend was never afraid to cross partisan lines if it meant defending what he knew to be right and good: "He could disagree on substance, but the underlying values that animated everything John did, everything he was, come to a different conclusion. He'd part company with you if you lacked the basic values of decency, respect, knowing this project is bigger than yourself."

The men shared another strong connection through Biden’s son Beau, who died of brain cancer in May 2015. During that difficult period in his life, Biden leaned into his friendship with McCain.

“There are times when life can be so cruel, pain is so blinding it’s hard to see anything else,” Biden said. “It’s brutal, it’s relentless, it’s unforgiving. It takes so much from those we love and from the families that love them, that in order to survive, we have to remember how they lived, not how they died.”

And Biden, who was visibly overcome with emotion throughout the speech, emphasized just how well McCain had lived.

“John’s story is the American story. That’s not hyperbole. It’s the American story. Grounded in respect and decency, basic fairness. The intolerance of the abuse of power. John understood America was first and foremost an idea. Audacious and risky. Organized around ideals,” he said, adding, “He made average Americans proud.”

McCain died last week at the age of 81, a year after he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. Every bit the true American hero his friend Biden made him out to be, the former Arizona senator will be laid to rest on Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland.

Kristen Bell Recalls Her First Meeting With Her Future Husband

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have one of the cutest celebrity relationships in Hollywood, but the way they met was not exactly adorable, as the pair told Entertainment Tonight.

According to Bell, the second time she met her future husband, at a hockey game, he asked for gum — and this happened:

"He asked for gum, I said no, I didn't have any," she explained. "Then I pulled [the gum] out [of my mouth] and said only this, then he took it."

Shepard didn't deny that that's how their first encounter went down.

"I didn't say, 'Hey, can I have the gum in your mouth,' I said, 'Hey, do you have any more gum,'" he said. "I was like, 'I'll take half out of your mouth.' And then I did."

After that, Shepard said he got Bell's number from a mutual friend and sent this message: "Hi, my name is Dax. I violated your privacy and got your number from Shauna. How do you feel about that?"

She must have been fine with it. Shepard and Bell got married in 2013 after six years of dating. They have two daughters together, Lincoln, 5, and Delta, 4, and will be celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary later this fall.

Bell has said before that she and Shepard met for the very first time at the birthday party of a mutual friend, but "there weren't any sparks." Two weeks later, when they bumped into each other at a hockey game and the gum exchange went down, she was interested, and by the time she received that forward text message, she was ready to go on a date.

"I thought...what the hell?? This kid is sassy," she wrote in an Instagram Q&A, E! News reported.

Of course, once she got to know him, she started to like other aspects of his personality. Bell said there's a three-way tie for her favorite thing about Shepard: "His patience to let me ramble; His ability to make me laugh; His critical thinking skills and intelligence," she wrote.

Shepard has also opened up about a lot about what he loves about Bell, even though their relationship is not perfect. He told Today, "She is really, really, a kind, thoughtful, generous person. And she, like everyone else, has all kinds of character defects, but at her core, her intentions are generally pretty solid. And that’s a great thing to know about your partner, because in the heat of battle, you can go, 'Wait a minute, I know this person. This person’s really kind and they are thoughtful and so something’s happening here other than that she has a flawed character.' What’s allowed me to be vulnerable with her is the trust, that she is a good person, and I know that, and so I can trust this person with my feelings or fears or concerns."

We can totally see why Bell and Shepard are one of the most respected couples in Hollywood — even after we've heard the gum story.

7 Things Healthy People Do Every Night

$
0
0

At the end of a busy day, you're looking forward to climbing into your bed and getting some shut-eye, right? Unfortunately, a good night of sleep doesn't always happen: as the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion notes, an estimated 25 percent of adults in the U.S. report that they're not getting enough sleep at least 50 percent of the time.

Your nighttime habits can definitely impact your sleep health, which can in turn impact your whole health, so we looked at some of the best habits healthy people have before they go to bed to get a primer on how to hit the sack healthy and happy.

Don't eat right before you go to bed

Leaving a buffer of time between your last bite and your head hitting the pillow is an excellent idea, emergency medicine physician Dr. Chirag Shah tells SheKnows.

"If your stomach is full and you lie down, you no longer have the benefit of gravity to help you push your stomach contents in the right direction in your body," he explains. "The result? The stomach contents and gases can leak backwards into your esophagus and even your mouth, causing symptoms of heartburn, a chronic cough and/or a stuffy nose."

Take a deep breath — or 20

Shah also recommends doing some deep breathing before bedtime. "Deep-breathing can stimulate your vagus nerve — a major nerve that helps activate parts of the nervous system that are focused on lowering stress in our bodies," he notes.

While you improve your upcoming sleepfest, you can also spend time focusing on your inner self as well — win-win!

Put your phone away

Don't just keep it by the bedside table in airplane mode, either — literally take it out of your room overnight.

"When our device is next to our bed, it is easy to grab it in the middle of the night when we are having trouble sleeping," says Shah. "How many people have done this and ended up wasting hours looking at social media or searching the web instead of sleeping?"

On top of that, spending time staring at your phone before you try to go to sleep can actually interfere with your ability to sleep well.

More: Why Resetting Your Internal Clock Is Easier Said Than Done

Cut the lights

You probably don't sleep with a lamp on, but even a little bit of ambient light sneaking in to your bedroom can negatively impact a good night of sleep. Shah recommends trying blackout shades if your bedroom windows are the culprits.

"Even a small amount of light can stimulate our bodies to wake up when we are not physiologically ready to do so," he says. "Do your body a favor and let it sleep as long as it can without being woken up by accidental light exposure."

Wash your face

Dermatologist Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse tells SheKnows that nighttime is when your skin has a chance to de-stress and repair itself. "It is important to wash off pore-clogging makeup, sunscreen, sweat and excess oils as well as oxidizing air pollution particles that contribute to free radical damage of the DNA and collagen fibers in the dermis," she says.

Shainhouse suggests choosing a gentle cleaner that is strong enough to remove your daily makeup without stripping your skin of its natural protective layer. Also, can we say that a freshly washed face just feels fantastic?!

Don't set an alarm

When you wake up naturally, your body is coming out of a bout of REM sleep — sleep you need at the end of the night to finish hardening your memories and refresh your emotions for the new day, Dr. Benjamin Smarr, a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley and Reverie sleep advisory board, tells SheKnows.

"When you use an alarm clock, you break that REM sleep and give yourself a jolt of stress instead of a peaceful awakening," he explains.

In other words, this can get your day off to a bad start, which is the opposite of what you want. "Waking up naturally is more healthy because you let your body and brain finish doing maintenance before putting yourself back on the road," he says.

Don't rely on OTC supplements for a good night of sleep

If you're someone who pops a Benadryl to help you drift off, even if you're not having an allergic reaction, you may want to think again. But what about something natural, like melatonin?

"Melatonin is clearly associated with sleep function, so you might think more must be better, but there still needs to be experimental verification that the dose and method of application allow the right amount to reach the right part of the brain at the right time to be meaningfully active," Smarr explains. So while it's easy to take some melatonin before bed, that's not always the best idea.

More: Does Melatonin Really Help You Sleep?

Bedding down and getting a good night of sleep doesn't just make you ready to face tomorrow's challenges — it can keep your stress down and can improve your overall health as well. Shut out the light, put the phone away and keep eating to a minimum at nighttime, and you'll be in far better shape.

Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born Is Struck By Literal Lightning

If you think Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s chemistry looks electric in the trailer for A Star Is Born, you should have been at the film’s world premiere. The unveiling, which took place at the Venice Film Festival on Friday night, was struck by a literal lightning bolt. We couldn’t make this stuff up if we tried.

According to Variety, the incident occurred roughly an hour into the film’s screening and caused a mini-blackout. Although the theater lights were restored momentarily, it took 15 minutes to fix the projector so that the screening could continue.

Sources said Cooper and Lady Gaga kept their cool, with the latter blowing kisses to an adoring audience during the interruption. It would seem the pair didn’t have anything to worry about, though. After the film resumed and wrapped up, it received an eight-minute ovation from the audience (who clearly was unbothered by the lightning bolt and the brouhaha).

Variety reported that Lady Gaga looked “relieved,” while star/director Cooper told the Warner Bros. delegation, “Thank you for staying!”

More: 21 Lady Gaga Quotes That Will Make You Want to Be a Better Person

As for that electric chemistry between the two on-screen, Cooper said it’s real (albeit platonic). Their connection was nearly instantaneous, and it sprung from an unlikely source: food. “I remember when we first met, after 10 minutes we were eating homemade food that she cooked — I love to eat — and that was actually a huge bond that we both came from East Coast Italian-American families," Cooper said. "So we had a real synchronicity on that level from our upbringing."

Cooper also said he “fell in love with [Gaga’s] face and eyes” on set.

It’s a good thing these two enjoy working with each other so much, because fans and critics alike will likely call for future collaborations. Early reviews of the film are positive across the board, with A Star Is Born being hailed as “transcendent” in one review.

And, speaking at the film festival, Cooper told reporters that he’s more than happy to step back behind the camera. “I’m 43 years old and I feel that time is the biggest currency and I have to utilize it to the best degree as possible,” he said. “This film took four years... and if I can continue to do [what I love], if Warner Bros. allows me to continue to tell these stories, then that’s what I’ll do.”

Don't Bother Jimmy Fallon During Dinner & He Might Pick Up Your $1,100 Tab

Sometimes, it literally pays to be quiet. Just ask the tableful of diners who enjoyed a free meal this week courtesy of Jimmy Fallon. According to Newsday, the late-night host so appreciated that the restaurant patrons didn’t disturb his date night with wife Nancy Juvonen, he decided to pick up their entire tab.

This random act of kindness occurred at the popular Hamptons eatery Il Mulino on Monday night, when two middle-aged couples dining together were seated adjacent to Fallon.

The restaurant’s general manager, Enzo Lentini, told Newsday that despite being huge fans of the television personality, they decided not to approach him. “They wanted to jump out of their skin,” Lentini said. “But they were cool — they didn’t want to interrupt him.”

In the end, not only did the couples get to meet Fallon, they also got to enjoy their meal at no cost to them. After dinner, Fallon approached their table. “He went up to them and said, ‘I appreciate you guys not wanting to disturb us. I knew you wanted to say hello,’” Lentini explained. “So he picked up the tab. With tip, it was $1,136.”

Fallon’s spokeswoman, Claire Mercuri, has since confirmed the story, proving once again that Fallon is a truly lovely human being. After all, this isn't the first time he has gone out of his way to be kind to strangers.

Last year on Long Island, the kind-hearted TV host offered a woman a ride when he drove past her walking on the side of the road in torrential rain. That woman, Dawyn Elyse Warden, was staying at a friend’s home in Sagaponack when she decided to walk to nearby Town Line Beach.

However, the weather didn't cooperate. When the rain started to pour, Warden had no choice but to head back amid the downpour. Then, an unlikely hero arrived.

“This truck pulls up and the window rolls down. I’m thinking, as a woman, ‘I’m not getting in the car with you.’ And then I was like, ‘Oh, it’s Jimmy Fallon,’” Warden told Newsday at the time.

The Tonight Show host offered to drive her the final few blocks back to her friend’s house, and Warden graciously accepted. Although Fallon never officially introduced himself, he did introduce his daughter Frances, then 2, who was in a car seat in the back.

“It was a big deal to me that he would stop the car for a stranger with his child in the car,” Warden said. “I thought that was kind of amazing.”

The Expert-Approved Way to Use Your Hair Diffuser for Camera-Ready Curls

There are many paths to the near-perfect curl. You can utilize a spiraling technique, such as shingling or the classic twist-out. For lazier beauties, cream and gel stylers are the best bet. And if you've got a thing (and the arm strength) for hand tools and despise air-drying, the diffuser is your saving grace.

Unfortunately, a lot of us are clueless about how to use it. And when you're dealing with hot air and wet strands, it can go from normal, everyday routine to straight-up disaster in a matter of seconds. So, if you're looking for volume and definition without the extra legwork, here's the proper way to do it the first time.

Expert Way to Use Your Hair Diffuser

What is a diffuser?

For starters, a diffuser is not a blow-dryer. It's an attachment for your blow-dryer that disperses air over a large area of hair. And according to Mia Emilio, senior stylist at DevaChan Salon, its purpose is "to disperse the air coming out of a blow-dryer evenly so it is not blowing air in one area of your hair."

In short: A diffuser ensures that your hair can dry completely and in one fell swoop before you walk out the door while also retaining the natural shape of your hair, whether it's curly or straight (although diffusers are typically better suited for the former).

Prepping the hair

Before hovering the diffuser anywhere near your head, Emilio recommends applying your styling product first. (Her faves for curly hair are DevaCurl’s Styling Cream or Super Stretch.) "I like to let the hair sit 10 to 15 minutes on its own before I begin drying it. I feel it allows the curls to settle in their ways," she says.

Everyone's frizz factor is different — and some of us couldn't care less about it — but if you do, Emilio suggests starting your dryer on a low setting to discourage high frizz from growing.

"I think the best way to diffuse is in circular motions around the head. Keep moving around while drying all over. You don’t want high heat or wind speed on any one area," she says. "Sometimes, you can cup your ends into diffuser, but you need to be careful depending on your curl texture." If you're cupping your curls, only do it for 30 seconds at a time so you don't alter your hair's natural curl pattern. Also, try to keep the touching at a minimum.

And in addition to starting your dryer at a low speed, begin with low heat too. "As you begin to dry more, maybe you can turn the heat up a little, even switching from warm setting and then hitting with cool. I like that trick for really adding height in the root area," says Emilio.

Expert Way to Use Your Hair Diffuser

Adding volume

When you want to create the illusion of fuller-looking hair, start to dry your hair in an upright position and then eventually bring your head down and forward. According to Emilio, "Drying upside down offers maximum volume." Once you are almost dry, use your hands to gently break up the cast that your product has created and massage or gently shake at the root.

"If you aren’t looking for volume, I would suggest keeping your head upright and turning your head side to side to dry your hair to avoid its getting too full," she says. Once you're finished, a little hair spray provides extra security, though it's not completely necessary.

"Honestly, diffusing your hair is a form of speeding up your drying process, so be gentle with it. I don’t feel the product you use before or after makes a huge difference," says Emilio. In the end, using the diffuser correctly is what will make or break your 'do.

What Is Keto Cycling, & Is It Effective?

Chances are at least a few of your friends and family members are on the keto diet or have tried it. If you're anything like me, the mere thought of bidding adieu to pasta and bread probably sends chills down your spine. But if you're looking for a balance between getting the benefits of the keto diet without foregoing your carb fix altogether, keto cycling may be right up your alley.

But first things first: What is keto cycling? Although it's essentially a form of the keto diet, it hasn't gotten nearly as much attention.

More: The Keto Diet: Here's What It's Really Like to Commit to It

"Keto cycling differs from the classical ketogenic diet because it allows more customization," registered dietitian Robert Santos-Prowse tells SheKnows. "With a strict ketogenic diet, you need to restrict your carbs to minuscule amounts all the time. "With a cyclical approach, you are allowing yourself the freedom to enjoy some carbohydrates on a regular basis but still get the benefits of the ketogenic diet."

Although doctors and nutritionists don't have an agreed-upon protocol for keto cycling, Alex Jatzke, lead dietitian at Simplex Health, recommends five to six days of a strict ketogenic diet followed by one or two days of higher carbohydrate intake.

"While the ketogenic diet requires a more long-term low-carbohydrate and high-fat diet, keto cycling allows for more flexibility with carbohydrate intake while still resulting in the long-term health benefits of a ketogenic diet," Jatzke explains.

More: 25 Incredible Keto Recipes Anyone Will Love

If you've tried the keto diet and found it too difficult to maintain (or you have a hunch that it will simply be too restrictive), Jatzke tells SheKnows keto cycling may be beneficial in these situations. Additionally, she notes that "cycling in and out of carb restriction" could be particularly beneficial for balancing hormone levels in women.

"The cyclical ketogenic diet is very effective because of the ketogenic diet itself. The main benefit of a cyclical approach is that it improves the sustainability of the diet," Santos-Prowse says. Although the keto diet is effective for weight loss, blood glucose control and blood pressure management, it's incredibly restrictive, he adds.

"You have to restrict your carbohydrate intake to the equivalent of less than one apple a day. That's hard to stick with long-term," Santos-Prowse explains. "A cyclical approach allows you to add in a bit more carbs on a regular schedule."

More: What Is "Keto Flu," & How Do You Treat It?

Of course, nutrition still matters on those higher carb days. Jatzke suggests getting your carbs from starchy vegetables, fruits and whole grains on those days.

"If you have a tendency towards binging behaviors, keto cycling should be avoided," she adds — and if you have a history of eating disorders, Jatzke says a strict ketogenic diet is generally not recommended. In fact, she recommends that people with any type of preexisting medical condition consult with their doctors before starting keto cycling or the keto diet.

But not all doctors and nutritionists are on board with the keto diet. "I recommend keto cycling over the keto diet if clients are set on some sort of fad diet," Sam Olmsted, consultant for All Inclusive Health, tells SheKnows. "However, it’s much more beneficial to simply have a balanced meal. Stick to whole grains, protein and vegetables while avoiding processed foods."

Can You Guess What Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Named Their New Dog?

If you’ve grown weary of all the bad news circulating on the internet, we bring you something refreshingly pure and innocent to cleanse your palate — Meghan Markle and Prince Harry just shared the name of their new dog. And, y’all, it’s cute.

According to The Daily Mail, royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith spilled the beans about the royal pup’s official moniker. First, it should be noted that the dog’s breed has also been revealed: Although it was widely being reported as being a Labrador retriever, new intel names it specifically a black Labrador retriever.

As for the name, Markle and Harry are said to have dubbed their canine companion “Oz.”

At this point, no explanation for the name has been nailed down. The Daily Mail speculated that it could have been inspired by the couple’s upcoming trip to Australia for the opening of the Invictus Games in Sydney in October.

Another argument for the royal dog’s name being inspired by Australia is perhaps the significance of the couple’s upcoming journey. Markle and Harry’s Australia excursion kicks off their first overseas tour as a married couple. It’s a trip royal expert Dickie Arbiter, former spokesperson for the queen, called a “litmus test” for the Duchess of Sussex.

Then again, who knows? Maybe Markle and Harry are just really big fans of The Wizard of Oz. It’s hard not to draw parallels (tenuous though they may be) between Markle and Dorothy — young women with simple roots who find themselves on a magical adventure to a beautiful, faraway land that feels like a dream.

Regardless, Oz will undoubtedly live a charmed life with Markle and Harry as pet parents. The black Lab will join Markle’s other dog, a beagle named Guy, in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace. Oz will also likely enjoy puppy playdates, so to speak, with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s cocker spaniel Lupo.

Per the Daily Mail’s sources, the new pup is already “happily ensconced” at the cottage and, like his royal parents, will “divide its time” between the cottage and the couple’s country home in the Cotswolds.

Kristen Bell Celebrates Dax Shepard's Sobriety Birthday With a Heartfelt Post

Dax Shepard was born on Jan. 2, but this weekend, his family is celebrating the CHIPS star’s other birthday — it’s been 14 years since he ditched his drug addiction. His proud wife, Kristen Bell, took to Instagram to honor the occasion.

The Good Place actor posted an emotional tribute to Shepard that speaks to the couple’s supportive (and playful!) relationship.

“To the man [who] mocked me when in our wedding photos because I cried too many tears of joy, Who wore a baby Bjorn for 2 straight years to show his girls how to be as adventurous as possible, Who held our dear little shakey mann pup for 8 hrs straight on the day we had to put him down, I know how much you loved using. I know how much it got in your way. And I know, because I saw, how hard you worked to live without it,” Bell wrote.

She continued, praising her husband’s willpower: “I will forever be in awe of your dedication, and the level of fierce moral inventory you perform on yourself, like an emotional surgery, every single night. You never fail to make amends, or say sorry when its needed. You are always available to guide me, and all of our friends, with open ears and tough love when its needed most. You have become the fertilizer in the garden of our life, encouraging everyone to grow.”

Bell also gave Shepard due credit for coming forward with his past “with the hope it might inspire someone else to become the best version of themselves.”

She closed the heartfelt post by telling her life partner how much she loves him, and that she sees him. “I see how hard you work,” Bell wrote. “You set an excellent example of being human.”

And that wasn’t all Bell did for her husband and the father of the couple’s daughters, Lincoln and Delta. On Instagram, Shepard shared a photo of Bell alongside his Armchair Expert podcast cohost Monica Padman in peculiar garb. In the caption, Shepard explained that his wife snagged him a tour of the King’s Hawaiian bread factory.

“Best sober birthday present ever. @kristenanniebell got me a tour of the @kingshawaiian factory and I ate 8 STRAIGHT oughta the oven. 2 more upstairs, and 3 at home. 13 all-in for one day is an accomplishment I will not soon forget. Also, the fact that Kristen looks like a scientist and @mlpadman looks like she’s on a kindergarten field trip just makes my heart my heart swell to dangerous levels,” Shepard wrote.

In 2012, Shepard opened up about his troubled past to Playboy, revealing his bad habit of choice was “Jack Daniel’s and cocaine.”

“From 18 to 29, I was a heavy smoker, drinker, drug addict, terrible eater and philanderer,” he said, pointing out that since he got sober he has “honestly been about trying to peel back each of those habits, to get back to the 12-year-old kid inside who was tremendously excited about life.”

With a little help from Bell (and copious amounts of bread), it looks like Shepard’s almost there.

Shauna Sexton Makes a Great Point About Being Blamed for Ben Affleck's Relapse

Since Ben Affleck checked himself back into rehab last week, speculation over what may have caused his latest relapse has run rampant. Unfortunately, many fans are finding fault with the Batman star’s rumored love interest, Shauna Sexton. But Sexton just clapped back at critics and made a solid point in the process.

On Saturday, one of the Playboy model’s Instagram followers called her out for allegedly getting Affleck “thrown into rehab.” And, well, Sexton didn’t take the slight lightly.

More: Ben Affleck Is Reportedly Very Serious About Getting Sober

“It’s so bizarre to me that you follow me and have the energy to come to the comments section strictly to comment something negative. It’s even more bizarre to me that you can somehow correlate someone’s [poor decisions] to anyone other than that person,” Sexton wrote, adding for good measure, “Never drank around or with him for the record.”

Sexton then urged the commenter — and, presumably, all of her followers — to focus their time on cultivating positivity, not hate.

“Don’t pollute your brain with tabloid and media bullshit. Form an educated opinion on things if you do decide to,” she said. “Love yourself a little harder. Radiate kindness. Spread words of encouragement.”

The keyboard warrior lobbing judgment at Sexton apparently wasn’t keen on letting it go, though, and opted instead to bring up alcohol-related issues in the model’s past. But Sexton had a smart, measured response for that, too.

More: This May Be the Reason Ben Affleck & Lindsay Shookus Split

“I love to drink and party! Absolutely dud. Most 22 year olds do,” she said, fessing up to two separate occasions on which she was placed in the “drunk tank” (one of which was the night of her 21st birthday).

“Do those mistakes define me? No, stupid miniscule shit I learned from. Do these mistakes mean that I am human? Yes. Do these mistakes mean I would disrespect someone’s hard earned sobriety by drinking with them or in front of them? Hell no. I have limitless respect [for] people who have the humility and maturity to admit when they need to fix something in their life. I have even more respect for those who take action and actually do something about it,” she wrote.

Still, Sexton pointed out, Affleck’s relapse wouldn’t have been her fault even if she had been drinking around him. Of the “grown ass man,” she said, “He makes his own decisions. Blaming a 22 year old for someone’s 3rd time in rehab is just ridiculous.”

In other words, random internet troll, please take all the seats.

Sexton has likely been inundated with negative attention since news first broke that she and Affleck may be romantically involved. If you ask us, though, she seems to be handling the entire ordeal with impressive grace.

The model signed out of the argument with a simple suggestion: practice empathy. “[Affleck] is human. I am human. You are human,” she wrote. “We are all going to fuck up, it’s just a matter of learning from it. Don’t be so quick to throw shade on people. Take a step back, accept that we are all on our own journey, and be a little less critical.”

If Sexton is in Affleck’s life — in whatever capacity it may be — she’s in good company. Another strong, outspoken woman, Jennifer Garner, reportedly staged the intervention responsible for getting her ex-husband the help he needs.

Chip & Joanna Gaines Introduced Their Youngest Son to Football

Crew Gaines is already a fan of football, well, sort of. On Sept. 1, Joanna and Chip Gaines shared Instagram photos with their youngest child attending his first football game at Baylor University.

Based on the pictures the happy parents shared, Crew didn't seem to watch too much of the actual game, because he was busy sleeping. Well, he is only three months old, so what else do you expect?

"First game day for baby Crew," Joanna captioned her image. As for Chip, he simply wrote, "#gameday."

Even though Crew seemed to sleep through most of the action, thank goodness there are photos of him at the game. The pictures are adorable and Chip and Joanna look beyond thrilled to have brought their baby boy along with them.

On June 23, Chip announced the birth of his fifth child on Twitter. The HGTV star tweeted, "And then there were 5. The Gaines crew is now 1 stronger! 10 beautiful toes and 10 beautiful fingers all accounted for, and big momma is doing great! #blessedBeyondBelief."

The former Fixer Upper hosts are also proud parents of Drake, 13, Duke, 10, Ella, 11, and Emmie Kay, 8. The Gaines children seem to adore their baby brother just like their parents, as proven in many photos shared by Joanna and Chip.

On Jan. 3, the couple announced they were expecting another child. In an Instagram of Chip donning a fake baby bump (would fans expect anything less?) next to Joanna with her actual baby bump, he wrote, "Gaines party of 7.. (If you’re still confused.. WE ARE PREGNANT)."

On June 28, People reported Joanna opened up about becoming a mom again to KMOV St. Louis before giving birth to Crew. She said, "When this baby comes, there is going to be quite the gap. I feel like those years when the kids were all young, it was so foggy … at one point I had four kids [age] 4 and under, and I just remember it was like tag-team wrestling. Chip and I were trying to figure out how to do this with four kids so young."

She continued, "But now I look at this as another opportunity to really embrace this moment with a newborn. My kids are so excited about it … but [I want] to slow it down a bit."

It sure sounds like Chip and Joanna are embracing every moment with Crew by ensuring he already experiences new things, like football.

The Quick-&-Easy Makeup Artist Guide to Under-Eye Concealer

By the time most of us find out what causes dark under-eye circles — mainly genetics or bad lifestyle choices — the damage has been done. Now we’ve got to slather on vitamin K- and vitamin C-rich eye creams and makeup to diminish the unsightly color that lets everyone know we’re not getting enough sleep.

It’s hardly surprising that under-eye concealer remains a must-have. Even if you don’t wear a full face of cosmetics every day, a small swipe of this stuff disguises blemishes with little effort. Unfortunately, it can do the opposite when applied incorrectly. So if you need a refresher, here’s exactly how to do it the right way.

Finding your shade

Like your foundation, color matching matters with under-eye concealer. When you utilize the wrong shade, you risk cakey-looking skin or, worse, emphasizing the darkness of your already dark circles.

According to celebrity makeup artist Min Min Ma (Hailee Steinfeld, Zosia Mamet, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto), the best way to cancel out under-eye darkness is with a pink or warm-color base. This counterbalances that blue-gray darkness and also brightens the area, creating a glowy, highlighting effect.

Liquid vs. powder

Although powder concealer may be more appealing to those with oily skin, Ma actually finds cream or liquid formulas much easier to apply, blend and maintain, regardless of your skin type. It also looks the most natural.

“I never use powder concealer because it looks cakey as the powder gets into the fine lines and wrinkles. Instead, I recommend sticking to cream/liquid,” she says. “Cream-based for those with dry and premature skin. Since it’s less oily, liquid can be used for normal, oily and acne-prone skin types.”

Application

Once you’re ready to apply your under-eye concealer, start by applying your foundation first. “The foundation can camouflage a bit of under-eye darkness so you don’t have to use a lot of concealer,” says Ma. From there, you’ll need a small, flat synthetic brush to spread evenly under the eye.

“I do like using brushes for application because it makes the job easier and the application more smooth-looking. I like flat-shaped brushes best, such as Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage brush and Hourglass No 8 large concealer brush,” she says. “Note that blending is also important to the final result. Lightly tap the concealer with your fingertip to ‘set’ the work and remove excess concealer. If you’re using a nongreasy concealer, I would forgo setting powder altogether.”

If you need a starter list of formulas to try, Ma’s favorites are the Lilah B. Virtuous Veil concealer, Hourglass Hidden corrective concealer, Lancôme Effacernes waterproof protective under-eye concealer and Tom Ford waterproof concealer and foundation.

Apparently, we aren't the only ones who just can't imagine life without Ryan Gosling. Emma Stone did a Q+A session at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado over the weekend, where she was honored for her career, and she couldn't help but gush about her longtime friend and repeated co-star.

Entertainment Tonight reports that Stone said she's learned a lot from Gosling, with whom she co-starred in Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), Gangster Squad (2013) and La La Land (2016): “I can’t even imagine what my life would be without Ryan,” she said, calling Gosling her “dear, wonderful friend."

"He’s so special," she continued. "It makes me emotional. He’s so talented but he’s such a great person to work with because he’s so collaborative and excited about the process. He’s taught me a lot about being really generous.”

Gosling was not at Telluride, according to ET, because his mother was renewing her wedding vows, but La La Land director Damien Chazelle presented Stone with a special silver medal for her career accomplishments. In addition to the Q+A session, attendees were treated to a 25-minute retrospective of Stone's numerous roles.

Stone has always been open about her closeness with Gosling. At the 2016 Venice Film Festival, where La La Land premiered, she told ET that they hit it off when they met during pre-production for Crazy, Stupid, Love: "We've been just pals ever since," Stone said. "He is a wonderful person, but also an incredible actor. It's a lucky thing that we get to do three. It's not bad."

Gosling shared similar sentiments when speaking to ABC prior to Stone's first Academy Award win in 2017, for her performance in La La Land. “It’s so much fun working with her,” he said. “We’ve been really lucky that we were asked to improvise on our first film together, and that’s where we created a connection. We’ve been really lucky to work that way."
