Bobby Flay Really Did Quit Iron Chef, & Food Network Was Not Pleased

This summer, Bobby Flay shocked us all when, during an episode of Iron Chef, he ripped open his chef's coat to reveal a shirt that said, "This is my last Iron Chef battle ever," leading to a collective gasp from the audience and hosts that quickly made its way to the tabloids before the episode had even aired.

He initially brushed the incident off as a joke. A weird joke, for sure, and a lot of people were still giving him major side-eye. Now, he's finally revealed in an interview at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival moderated by other Food Network darling Michael Symon that it wasn't a joke at all. That ended up being his last episode of Iron Chef ever, which even the network didn't know until he revealed his shirt.

More: What would Bobby Flay do? We asked him and got more than we expected

"I wanted everyone to know that this is my last Iron Chef battle," he told Symon according to People. "And my objective, though it was probably not the best idea, was that that's what would be filmed. When the camera's on you, that's what the viewer would see. So I did it."

But he never got approval from the network, so they were just as shocked by the revelation as viewers were. "I thought it would be good TV," he told Symon. "They didn't think of it that way, and that's obviously their prerogative."

More: Bobby Flay's Daughter Sophie Flay Is Kind of Amazing

TV networks plan everything as carefully as possible, so Flay surprising them with a moment that couldn't be edited out of an episode of their show — since he revealed his shirt right in the middle of the battle, it wasn't just a matter of cutting it out of the beginning or end of the episode — would understandably upset them. That being said, they've been supportive of Flay's departure from the show.

So, why leave at all? Basically, it was exhausting. "When I do a season, I do between 6 and 8 [battles] in a week and it crushes me because it's 60 minutes of pure energy, creativity and execution... so at some point I was like, 'I've been doing this for a long time and I want to go out on a high note,'" Flay said. Considering how exhausting it is just coming up with a last-minute weeknight meal at home, it's definitely understandable that his constant competing just became too much for him.

More: 11 rumors about Bobby Flay — most of them having to do with his love life

Flay is still involved heavily in the Food Network's programming, with what seems like a new show coming out every couple of years. And though he did say that he's not opposed to returning as a guest someday, regularly competing in Iron Chef will remain a relic of his past. At least if you still need to scratch your watch-Bobby-Flay-in-culinary-competitions itch, you can always rely on Beat Bobby Flay!

Kelly Ripa Gives Her Full Support to Live Cohost Ryan Seacrest on Air

Updated March 1, 2018, 9:45 a.m. PT: Despite a mountain of evidence against him being made public, Ryan Seacrest has faced little backlash and still has supporters. On the March 1 episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan, his cohost, Kelly Ripa, made a very pointed public statement of support for Seacrest.

"I just want you to know you are a privilege to work with, and I adore you," Ripa said to cheers from the live studio audience. "Speaking on behalf of all of us here, I know what an easy, professional, great person you are, and I feel very, very lucky to work with you each and every day."

Seacrest's girlfriend has also spoken out in support of him. And Seacrest, unfortunately, isn't the first famous person to dodge the kinds of accusations that brought down the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Brett Ratner. It just goes to show we still have a way to go before Hollywood really is a safe place for women.

Seacrest will also be on the Oscars red carpet for E!, which is already causing some controversy. Jennifer Lawrence told Howard Stern she's on the fence about whether she would speak to Seacrest there, both because of the allegations against Seacrest personally and because Catt Sadler left E! after the network refused to pay her as much as her male counterpart.

"I have noticed that they keep cycling these women and I am going… is that so you don’t have to pay another woman equally to Jason [Kennedy]? Is this just a way to still maintain that you are not paying women equally?" Lawrence wondered.

When Stern asked her if her hesitation had to do with Seacrest as well, she answered, "I don’t know about the Ryan Seacrest thing. I think it is scary, you know. He has not been to trial for anything. I am not a judge. I am not a jury, you know. I don’t know… that is where this stuff gets tricky."

While Seacrest hasn't been tried, men who sexually abuse women almost never are, just as Weinstein, Spacey and Ratner have not been tried. While ideally, the justice system should handle these kinds of cases, the reality is that it doesn't, and we all need to take a stand to make it clear to these men, Seacrest included, that their behavior isn't OK.

Updated Feb. 27, 2018, 9:40 a.m. PT: The woman who made sexual misconduct allegations against Ryan Seacrest has come forward to tell her story, and frankly, it does not look good for either Seacrest or E! When the 10-year-old allegations were made against Seacrest, E! commissioned an outside investigation and ultimately found "insufficient evidence" to support the allegations. But now, Seacrest's former stylist Suzie Hardy is telling all of her story, and in a bombshell Variety report, her allegations are corroborated by multiple friends, colleagues and coworkers from her time at E! There are a lot of voices backing her up for E! to have found "insufficient evidence," and considering the network's recent track record for its treatment of female employees, it's hard to be surprised.

In a letter sent from her attorney to E!, Hardy details years of abuse. Variety obtained a copy of that letter and substantiated many of Hardy's claims through outside sources. Hardy said that in 2007, as a single mom, she was approached by Seacrest's personal assistant, her neighbor at the time, about working for the up-and-coming star. She jumped at the chance. But it wasn't long before Seacrest's assistant started dropping hints that Seacrest was interested in Hardy romantically, she said. Soon after that, she alleges, he started asking her to come to sets where he had another stylist or come to his home alone at late hours. Hardy says she refused many of these requests, and Seacrest became more aggressive. She says she turned down a request from him to "take a nap" with him while prepping for the 2007 New Year’s Rockin' Eve special (meant to ring in the year 2008).

Hardy says Seacrest's behavior continued to escalate, and he started giving her "bear hugs" while wearing only his underwear in his dressing room. He also gave her expensive gifts and at one point, she said, tearfully told her, "I just don’t think you’re attracted to me." Hardy says she replied, "I'm attracted to my paycheck."

"I didn’t know how to deal with it," Hardy told Variety. "I really didn’t. I was battling finally being in a decent financial position to breathe and be a mom, that I didn’t have to be freaking out all the time, and then dealing with this infantile celebrity person who was testing me on every level and manipulating me and knew that I was in a vulnerable position."

Hardy says Seacrest's inappropriate behavior continued into 2008, when Seacrest allegedly slipped his hand under her crotch, and then asked her, "Oh my god, are you going to sue me?" Hardy says she assured him she wouldn't as long as she kept her job. Variety spoke to a former E! employee who says Hardy told him about that incident when it happened. The former coworker also described times that Seacrest hugged Hardy against her will or tried to force her head into his crotch when she tied his shoes. That coworker also witnessed an event a year later when Seacrest allegedly slapped Hardy's buttock hard enough to leave a welt. Hardy photographed the welt and provided the photo to investigators. Metadata from the photo confirmed it was taken at the time Hardy and her former coworker claimed the slap happened. That coworker was also interviewed during E!'s investigation, which supposedly found "insufficient evidence" of Seacrest's alleged misconduct.

That same coworker also told investigators he witnessed Seacrest, again wearing only his underwear, grab Hardy and rub his erection against her, only stopping when the coworker yelled at him.

The following year, 2010, Hardy alleges she was in a new relationship, and Seacrest harassed her about it. "Have you fucked him yet?" she recalls Seacrest asking about her new boyfriend. Hardy says she told Seacrest not to ask her things like that, and he responded by "tightly" grabbing her vagina. Two coworkers and a friend not associated with E! told Variety they remember Hardy telling them about this incident in 2010. A coworker who witnessed it told Variety she offered to escort Hardy to HR to report it, but still in fear of losing her job, Hardy declined.

Hardy says that in 2013, HR approached her (not the other way around), asking about her relationship with Seacrest. Hardy says she denied having a physical relationship with him, but broke down and detailed the years of abuse and harassment she had suffered. She says she was fired soon after.

In the letter sent from her attorney to E!, Hardy is only asking the network to "come up with a plan to address the treatment of all women at the networks and to take responsibility for the wrongful treatment" Hardy endured. Hardy said when E! announced its investigation had cleared Seacrest of wrongdoing, she felt "total exasperation."

"I felt like by the third interview, it was obvious the investigator was whitewashing it for Seacrest’s side," she added.

A spokesperson for E! defended the investigation, telling Variety, "E!’s investigation was extremely comprehensive and thorough. Over the course of a two-month process, our outside counsel interviewed more than two dozen people regarding the allegations, including multiple separate meetings with the claimant. The investigator is an attorney with nearly 20 years experience and is highly regarded professionally. Any claims that question the legitimacy of this investigation are completely baseless."

Seacrest's attorney criticized Hardy for coming forward and Variety for giving her a platform.

"It is upsetting to us that Variety is electing to run a ‘story’ about untrue allegations that were made against my client, after they were told that the accuser threatened to make those false claims against him unless he paid her $15 million. At that time, the claimant threatened to issue a demonstrably false press statement unless she was paid. Instead, my client proactively and publicly denied the claims and agreed to fully cooperate with E!’s investigation about the matter," he said. It's important to note that Hardy and her attorney both deny ever asking for money, and Seacrest's attorney did not provide any evidence that she had done so.

Meanwhile, Seacrest remains one of the most formidable faces in entertainment. He hosts a radio show, shares the stage with Kelly Ripa on Live with Kelly and Ryan and is about to reprise his first major role as host of the American Idol revival, set to premiere next month on ABC. Seacrest is a force right now, and it will be a real test of Hollywood's reckoning in the time of the #MeToo movement to see whether his legacy can be toppled like those of other powerful men who have done despicable things.

Original story, published Feb. 6, 2018, 9:53 a.m. PT: Ryan Seacrest, never one to sit back and stay quiet, is speaking out about the sexual harassment allegations that were levied against him late last year. Last week, he was cleared by an external investigation, which stated that there was "insufficient evidence to substantiate allegations against Seacrest."

More: How Kelly Ripa's Husband Mark Consuelos Really Feels About Ryan Seacrest

In an open letter, Seacrest talked about how it felt to hear about the allegations.

"In November, I received a letter from a lawyer representing a former show stylist. She claimed that I mistreated her more than a decade ago when we worked together. This arrived during an unprecedented public reckoning by women in our industry and beyond, courageously coming forward to share their stories, many of them heartbreaking. These women sought to bring attention to the systemic gender inequality that has occurred for decades. I was — and am — amazed at their bravery," he wrote.

"To have my workplace conduct questioned was gut-wrenching. I’ve always aimed to treat all of my colleagues with honesty, respect, kindness and compassion. Yet, I knew, regardless of the confidence I had that there was no merit to the allegations, my name would likely soon appear on the lists of those suspected of despicable words and deeds. The pressures of our overflowing newsfeeds would insist on it. I absolutely want to be part of the change, the progress, that is coming. I did not want to be a postscript of evidence of its cause."

He went on to explain how important he thinks it is that we presume innocence for those accused, writing, "At a time when improper interactions between men and women, particularly in the workplace, are part of a national conversation, we must find a way to ensure that everyone — the public, private and public institutions, accusers and alleged accused — is given the opportunity for a swift and fair review."

More: Kelly Ripa Makes Huge Announcement About Ryan Seacrest's Future

He then went on to say this: "My job is to listen. Beyond listening, which I will continue in earnest, I also will ask questions and try to help voices be heard. It isn’t lost on me that my platforms — radio, TV, social media — can be powerful conduits for change."

But that's wrong. Seacrest's job is not simply to listen. In fact, listening to women when they tell the harrowing stories of the abuse, marginalization and dismissal they have faced is not a brave or important act — it's the baseline for being a decent human being. As a man with power and privilege most women can only dream of, Seacrest has a much harder job. He needs to use his power to take actual action to change the culture of harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry. He doesn't seem to realize this.

Another thing Seacrest doesn't seem to realize is that women very rarely make false accusations about men who mistreat them. We often have more to lose than to gain by speaking up. Women are historically blamed and vilified for accusing men of bad behavior. And when there's no evidence to support their claims, as there generally isn't when it's one woman's word against one man's, our credibility is destroyed, regardless of whether there was truth to the allegations.

Just because an investigation did not find evidence to support this claim against Seacrest doesn't mean he's off the hook. Men simply don't think about their words the same way women do. They think nothing of the jokes and offhand comments they make that can make women deeply uncomfortable because women are conditioned to see the possibility of danger in every interaction with men. Instead of speaking up about how difficult it has been to have his character questioned, now is the time for Seacrest to examine his and other men's behavior and actually commit to making changes.

Amy Schumer Is Being Mocked, Trolled & Torn Down Over Her Wedding Ring

In case you've been living under a rock somewhere, Amy Schumer got surprise married to her super-hot chef husband around Valentine's Day. Their wedding was gorgeous; they were surrounded by friends and family; and best of all, they seem blissfully happy together in the numerous photos Schumer posted from the special day. I'm not an Amy Schumer fan by any stretch, but even I can't help being happy for her, because there are a lot of awesome things going on in her life right now and she's clearly riding that high wave.

But the internet exists, so ya know, of course we can't all just be happy that another human is happy. Nope, happy people must be mocked, trolled and torn down. It is written in the rules of the internet.

And so, when Schumer attended a New York Knicks basketball game wearing her brand-new ring, and the Daily Mail published a photo of her flashing it, people became the worst. A few comments are now getting some attention because of the way in which they make fun of the size of Schumer's wedding ring. We should have expected this, but it doesn't make it any less irksome.

"Well she's not trying to flash that ring at every opportunity is she," one cruel commenter wrote. Another chimed in, "the only Rock I see is Chris. lol," referring to comedian Chris Rock, who was sitting next to Schumer at the game.

Really, people? Really? Do we actually need a collective reminder that marriage doesn't have one single thing to do with how big your diamond is? Schumer is clearly happy and obviously sees something in her husband other than money and a fat sparkler to show off in paparazzi photos. Imagine that.

How to Make Green Beer & 4 Other Festive Drinks for St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day just wouldn't be St. Patrick's Day without green beer — even if the official color of the holiday is actually blue because it's the color associated with St. Patrick.

We'll give you a moment to let that fun fact sink in...

OK, now that you've wrapped your head around how bizarre that is, let's get back to why we're all here: green beer. And we have a step-by-step guide for how to make the best green beer ever. Don't worry, though, if beer isn't your thing, we've got some pretty tasty green cocktail recipes for you too.

Now, let's get down to business. Here's all you need to know to get your suds a vibrant shade of emerald green.

Green beer

Green beer

1. Buy light beer

No, it doesn't have to be low in calories, but the color of the beer you use is important. You want to use a light-colored beer so the food coloring will easily mix. Using a dark beer (like Guinness) will require too much food coloring, which may change the flavor of the beer — or not even color the beer at all.

2. Food coloring goes in first

Making green beer is super-easy, being as that there are only two ingredients: beer and food coloring.

Start by adding three drops of green food coloring for each bottle of beer. Adding the food coloring to the bottom of an empty glass works best because when you pour the beer on top, it will help mix it. Adjust the color by adding more dye if you like.

3. Blue & yellow make green

Blue food coloring works also because when mixed with a brighter yellow beer, it makes for a nice green-colored brew. But be sure to test a drop of blue in a taster of the beer to see the result.

Now, on to the cocktails!

Beyoncé & Blue Ivy Were Pure Magic at the Wrinkle in Time Premiere

The worldwide debut for A Wrinkle in Time is almost here, and here to help get us excited for the magic are none other than Beyoncé and Blue Ivy Carter.

The famous mother-daughter duo allegedly snuck into a special premiere screening for the film — though, honestly, who would have turned them away? — on Monday at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, and from the looks of Bey's Instagram posts, they couldn't have had more fun.

And who could blame them for doing a happy jump for this much-hyped film? After all, the cast boasts the names of female icons including Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. And OK, Chris Pine doesn't hurt either.

The film, which is an adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 novel of the same name, is an exciting testament to the curiosity and capabilities of young girls. Directed by the inimitable Ava DuVernay (Selma, 13th, Middle of Nowhere) the big screen feature finally puts a black girl — the talented Storm Reid — in the sci-fi spotlight, a long overdue feat.

"I do feel a sense of responsibility, like that I have to keep [girls] uplifted and I have to keep inspiring them," Reid recently told The New York Times about her new role-model status.

Reid also hopes she can inspire young girls of color to realize their full potentials.

"[My character] is an African-American girl that is smart, that is beautiful, and that basically realizes that she is enough," she added.

Though she's much younger than Reid, Blue Ivy has also been regarded as a source of inspiration for girls of color. In her short life so far, she's already flown to Houston to help her mother provide hurricane disaster relief and unknowingly gave away some of her first gifts to children and mothers in need. Is it weird to say we look up to a 6-year-old?

The Real Reason Lori Loughlin RSVP'd No to John Stamos' Wedding

In general, it might be a universally agreed-upon rule that anyone you've kissed passionately on the mouth who isn't your fiancé(e) shouldn't be invited to your wedding, if only to avoid the awkwardness of the entire affair. But in the case of John Stamos and his longtime TV girlfriend (then TV wife), Lori Loughlin, that rule goes right out the window. After more than 20 years as Stamos' costar and friend, Loughlin obviously should have been at Uncle Jesse Stamos' wedding to Caitlin McHugh. So why wasn't she?

More: John Stamos & Caitlin McHugh Didn't Let a Robbery Ruin Their Wedding Day

Apparently, it's because Stamos sucks at planning ahead.

"Caitlin and John — they were a little last-minute in their planning and preparation and we had already committed to something else," Loughlin told Us Weekly in a new interview. "We were all invited. Unfortunately, Candace [Cameron-Bure] and I already committed to go to the Super Bowl months and months and months in advance so we couldn’t be there. But we certainly were all invited."

More: John Stamos Is the "Happiest Man on Earth" in Honeymoon Photos

She added, "All the Hallmark executives were taking us to the Super Bowl. It was so much fun but we already committed to that. So we, unfortunately, could not be at John’s wedding."

Didn't think there could be real, serious consequences to last-minute wedding planning? Here's proof that there can be.

Obviously, though, because the cast of Full House is all still best friends, Loughlin sent her own kind of congratulations to the happy couple.

"I sent flowers and I was really bummed that I already had plans," she said. "Dave [Coulier] went, Jodie [Sweetin] went. I think Bob [Saget] was there. Candace and I would have been there, we just unfortunately — timing."

There's a life lesson here, folks. Don't wait until the last minute to plan your wedding. The results can truly be catastrophic.

Why I'm Glad My Kid Isn't a Baby Anymore

$

0

As my son’s second birthday approached recently, I found myself looking through photos of him — clumsily walking at his first birthday party, giggling at the dog as a chubby 6-month-old and furrowing his brow at the camera as a newborn leaving the hospital. I laughed at that one, remembering how terrified we both were to embark on this new adventure. And I couldn’t help but marvel at how much we’ve both grown.

Moms are often told to “savor every moment,” right? That, and "don't blink because it goes too fast.” So now, looking at my big toddler as he runs around and chases the dog, I’m being told I should mourn his growth. Don’t I miss the days when his entire body could fit on my chest? Don’t I miss the baby snuggles? The sweet smell of a newborn? The swaddles and the pacifiers?

To be honest, not really.

More: How to Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems — at Any Age

I often feel inundated with messages about clinging to babyhood — and about wishing kids would "just quit growing already" and begrudgingly permitting kids' increased independence with each passing year, etc. But I haven’t forgotten just how hard those newborn days were. And the truth is I’ve become more enamored with my son the older we both get; watching him grow fills me with pride.

Instead of grieving as my son grows, I try to be conscious of how I interact with him, and I hope I don't place my own feelings at the center of his life. It’s easy to want to hang onto him for my own benefit — to want to always feel the warmth of him in my arms, to hold his hand as we cross the street, to keep him close to me and away from harm. But that’s not why I became his mom. Yes, motherhood is full of sweet, tender and fleeting moments — moments in which you, as a parent, are very much the center of your child’s world. But as my son grows, we will spend a lifetime separating, and it does me well to remember that’s kind of the whole point.

More:  These Eco-Friendly Clothes Are Great for Kids — & Planet Earth

He and I will always be connected by the special bond between a parent and a child, but we are also separate people. While I love the person I’ve become because of him, I also love the person I was before him, and I try to honor her daily. (After all, she’ll likely make another appearance years from now as an empty nester, and when that time comes, I’d like to still be able to recognize her.)

Raising children is selfless in a lot of ways, especially when they’re small: trading in full nights of rest for feedings and diaper changes, watching more of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood than you ever thought possible (and certainly more than any of the other shows you were once devoted to). But the truest act of selflessness is loving your child and then letting them go. My son still needs me a great deal right now, but it is my job to teach him how to take on the world without me — how to love and trust himself, how to right wrongs and be brave in the face of difficulty — and how to cross the street without holding my hand.

More: Should Schools Mandate That Kids Learn Cursive?

As difficult as it may be to accept my changing role in my son's life, I look forward to that growth. I welcome the day when we can have a conversation that consists of more than him asking for another snack and me telling him no.

Someday, he will walk away, and I can only hope I have given him enough love and security that on that day, he knows he can always come back home. I hope he'll know he is loved here and that while I will undoubtedly miss him, I won’t crumble without him. That I will love him no matter where his dreams take him — and that I have dreams too. Many of my dreams have a lot to do with him, but others do not.

Holding a baby is precious, but watching that baby grow is magical. Getting to know the person my son is and will become is one of the greatest joys in my life. Every birthday of his is indeed a reminder that time does go fast — but also a reminder that I don’t have to be sad about this. I’m not here to hang onto my son, whether that's his babyhood, his toddlerhood or his teenage years. I’m here to raise him up — and then let him go.

Lauren Paul Opens Up About This Awful Breastfeeding Condition

Lauren Paul and her husband, Jesse Pinkman — I mean Aaron Paul — are loving everything about being new parents. Well, except for one really, really unpleasant thing: mastitis. Lauren Paul, who gave birth to the couple's first child in February, shared her experience with the breast infection in a candid Instagram post.

"This post labor chapter has been rough at times," she wrote after gushing about how "precious and pure" her newborn daughter is. "Recovering from labor is no joke. I'm definitely on the mend in that department but...breastfeeding. Oh man."

More: Aaron Paul Is Going to Be a Dad, & We Can't Contain Our Excitement

Paul stated that even though breastfeeding has been "one of the most beautiful experiences" of her life, it's also been one of the most painful because of recurring mastitis, an inflammatory infection of the breast tissue.

Lauren Paul Mastitis

Lauren Paul Mastitis

"For those of you who don't know what that is, it's an infection from breastfeeding that creates severe flu-like symptoms," she explained. "Yesterday I was fighting a fever that almost hit 104. It was the sickest I have ever felt. The pain and aches were unbelievable."

According to the Mayo Clinic, mastitis can cause redness, swelling, fevers and burning sensations. In rare instances, mastitis can cause sepsis or death. While it primarily affects women who are breastfeeding or recently gave birth, you don't have to be a new mother to get the infection.

Various things can cause lactational mastitis, including blocked milk ducts and the introduction of bacteria into a woman's breast. By sharing her experience, Paul hopes to spark a conversation about "very common issues" that can affect mothers.

"I'm feeling a responsibility to share this so that any new mamma-to-be reading this is aware of these potential issues," she wrote. "If I could give an upcoming mother any advice for this chapter it would be to become well educated about breastfeeding. Take a class, do your research or have conversations with other mothers. There are so many things that can happen...an oversupply of milk leading to an infection, your baby having trouble latching, having an undersupply... being aware of this will be so helpful so that you will know how to avoid or handle these things."

She summed up her message simply by stating, "You are not alone."

All the Times Seinfeld's Elaine Benes Was a Champion for Women's Health

What is there left to say about Elaine Benes, the iconic Seinfeld character brought to life by Julia Louis-Dreyfus? She was smart, sassy and had her act together. But what we loved most about Elaine is how, in a show revolving around the lives of men, she still managed to raise several important women’s health issues throughout the sitcom’s nine-season run.

Off-screen, Louis-Dreyfus is equally outspoken in terms of her health. In September 2017, Louis-Dreyfus revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer; and since then, she's been nothing but open and positive about her health and her own personal journey. Just a couple of weeks ago, Louis-Dreyfus tweeted an update on her fight with cancer, letting fans know she went through surgery and was feeling happy, ending the tweet with: "Hey cancer, 'Fuck you!'" She also posted a hilarious "post-op" photo.

All that said, Louis-Dreyfus and Benes are basically one in the same: strong, inspirational and damn funny.

But let's get to the list. Here are a few of the most memorable on-screen Elaine moments.

She’s vocal & passionate about birth control

sponge

sponge

Elaine never hid the fact that she enjoyed sex. Even if it took her many years before she was able to have an orgasm, she still chose to engage in the act and wasn’t shy about talking about her birth-control methods of choice. Of course, there’s the Today Sponge. As someone entrenched in women’s sexual and reproductive health, I can say, hand on my heart, that I have not heard of anyone using the sponge outside of this episode of Seinfeld. But Elaine — she’s definitely a fan. When she found out from Kramer — inexplicably the messenger of crucial sexual health information — that the sponge was going off the market, she made it her mission to stockpile as many as she could. Given they were a nonrenewable resource, she made sure to assess her gentlemen friends in order to determine whether or not they were “spongeworthy.”

But this isn’t Elaine’s only discussion of contraception. In another episode, she describes how her diaphragm falls out of her bag — repeating the word to great comedic effect and making Jerry’s virgin girlfriend uncomfortable in the process.

While we’re on the subject, Elaine is also not shy about letting her friends know about the importance of female sexual pleasure and orgasms, but that’s a conversation for another day.

She doesn’t want kids, & she’s not afraid to say it

baby

baby

A lot has changed since Seinfeld was on the air, including a wider conversation about women’s decisions to become parents. Before people like Ina Garten were talking about their choice to opt out of motherhood, Elaine was speaking for all of us non-mothers-to-be. When her friend tells her that she's "gotta have a baaaaaby," Elaine quickly changes the subject to a piece of whitefish she ordered the other day.

Elaine tells Jerry her friends "act as if having a baby takes some kind of talent." Jerry immediately jumps to the conclusion that Elaine must want to have a baby, to which she responds, "Why? Because I can?" After meeting her future beau (and Bizarro Jerry), Kevin, Elaine says that having a baby has "been done to death." She’s not wrong.

She tackles the "women are difficult" stereotype

difficult

difficult

In another episode, Elaine goes to her doctor because of a rash, sneaks a peek at her medical chart and finds out she has been labeled "difficult" by her health care providers. The more she asks about it and protests, the worse her chart write-up gets.

While this made for an entertaining premise for a sitcom plotline, it's a very real problem that so many women face, both in and out of the doctor's office. The minute we open our mouths to express an opinion or even ask a question, we're labeled as "difficult." Elaine was ahead of the curve pointing that out.

She gets real about toilet seat germs

toilet seta

toilet seta

When Elaine finds out that she only shares her office bathroom with one other woman and that her colleague still uses toilet seat covers, Elaine gets offended. She likens it to using toilet seat covers if you lived with a roommate. In this case, Elaine even has science on her side: Most healthy people won't get sick from sitting on an uncovered shared toilet seat.

This episode also touches on slut-shaming. The reason Elaine's co-worker covers the seat and is afraid of Elaine's germs is she thinks Elaine enjoys the company of numerous men. This implies that she's afraid of catching herpes or some sort of STI from the shared toilet seat or the stapler or telephone receiver Elaine rubbed on her (clothed) butt.

This Survivor Contestant Had to Get Therapy After the Show

Jacob Derwin is a self-described Survivor superfan who had his dream cut short by being booted early in the game. Although his time on the show was brief, his moments are memorable. He was the first castaway to ever live on Ghost Island. He crafted an impressive fake Idol. He attempted big strategic moves. Ultimately, it just didn't work out. In our one-on-one interview with Jacob, he explained the bonuses to living on Ghost Island and discussed how going to therapy has helped him since being off the show.

SheKnows: Did you know you were going to be voted off?

Jacob Derwin: It was maybe a 25 percent chance I was gonna make it through that thing. The whole plot to get rid of Michael would've been great. It would've been fun. Stephanie, Laurel and James considered it, but I was trying to put together this majority out of pieces that didn't fit together. People who didn't really want to work together. People who never really got to talk to each other. Meanwhile, the entire tribe was pretty much ready to get rid of me anyway. I knew that there was a very slim chance I was gonna make it through that Tribal. I held on to hope for as long as I could.

Jacob Derwin voted off Survivor: Ghost Island

SK: After getting voted off, you said in your exit statements that you're embarrassed. How are you feeling about it today?

JD: It's a hard feeling to shake. I went out there to intending to at least make the merge. If things didn't go my way, I at least wanted to see the game through. I wanted to make my family and my friends proud. Instead, I kind of feel like I burned out too hard too quick. It's a bummer. I wanted to give everyone something to look forward to. I definitely am a little bit embarrassed. I'm still working through that. Therapy is very helpful. I've been going to therapy for two months now, actually.

SK: Did you seek out the therapy because of your Survivor experience?

JD: It started with that. It kind of comes up on the show, but I'm a bit of an anxious person. I kind of avoided it for a long time, but after doing something like this and being so scared of what would come afterward, how it will all look and the kind of humiliation that comes with doing this kind of thing on a giant scale, I definitely thought it would be a good time for me to give it a try. It's been nice.

Jacob Derwin singled out on Survivor: Ghost Island

SK: It seemed like you and Stephanie had formed some sort of an alliance. Did you have an alliance with anybody that we didn't get to see on TV?

JD: There was a final three deal [laugh] that clearly didn't mean much between me, Jenna and Stephanie. Obviously, I didn't care really much for Jenna. We didn't talk much, but me and Stephanie talked constantly. We were pretty buddy-buddy from like day two. I thought she was like the cool mom. We had a good thing going. Clearly, she had allegiance elsewhere and wasn't gonna commit to me when there was a majority elsewhere. There was a lot of almosts. Me and Laurel really liked each other, but she didn't have much to say. Me and James really liked each other, but he was kind of scared of me. Me and Donathan really liked each other, but he wasn't gonna go with me. He was going to go with the majority, and he was at Ghost Island when we went to Tribal. All of my connections weren't cohesive enough.

SK: You admitted to Stephanie that your Idol was fake, but did you tell anybody else?

JD: She was the only one. My hope with Stephanie was she was my connection to the pretty people because I wasn't connecting with Michael, Jenna, Brendan or Libby. I tried, but it wasn't really happening. They weren't super interested in me. Stephanie was kind of my way in. She's a big fan. I got that vibe from her really early. My hope was that if I show Stephanie how deeply I'm willing to put faith in her that maybe she would see me as a loyal ally. Stephanie is not the kind of person that wants to be a pawn in someone else's game. She wants to be in charge. Giving her all that information was my way of saying, "Let's work together on this. You want to take out Morgan later? We'll do that together. You want to work with her? We can do that, too. We can total control of this right now and nobody would see it coming." If we had, it could've been cool. It wasn't coming together. Not just with her. I was trying to piece together this crazy alliance out of her, Jenna, Laurel and James.

Jacob Derwin shows off fake Idol on Survivor: Ghost Island

SK: You showed everybody at camp that fake Idol, but said it was a real one you had found on Ghost Island. Then you told them you would play it to keep yourself safe at the next Tribal Council. Were you concerned they would take that threat and stack votes against you to flush out the Idol just in case it was actually real?

JD: The whole idea was to make them not flush it. ... I knew I was coming off as sketchy. I knew people were looking at me in weird ways, so I was thinking maybe I could sit them all down and say, "I don't want to be the Idol guy. I'm just gonna get rid of it, so I'm going to play it at the next Tribal. You can vote for me if you want, but I'm going to play it." I thought it might deter people from voting for me. I really thought they might be like, "Jacob is going to be immune, so we'll take out someone else instead." But Brendan is a smart dude. I can make a fake Idol, but I can't make fake parchment.

Jacob Derwin on Survivor: Ghost Island

SK: You were the first person to ever experience Ghost Island. Explain what it's like being there.

JD: It was just so cool. The snuffer shelter is just amazing. It's screwed up, is what it is. It's twisted because you're sleeping under ruined dreams. It's awesome on the screen, but it's even more baffling in person with the amount of things that are there.

SK: But what is it like once the sun goes down?

JD: It's comfortable. Is that weird to say? It's comfortable. Ghost Island was nicer than my camp [laughs.] It was a little rougher and little more rocky, but I had a nice shelter that just happened to have some twisted assets to it. I had really nice jug of water sitting right there. I had rice and firewood ready for me. I had fishing gear there if I wanted to use it. You're comfortable at Ghost Island. I can't complain about that. But don't get me wrong; you're sleeping under every snuffer from every season next to a giant sign that says, "One mistake will haunt you forever." That's unsettling, but overall I thought it was an awesome experience. I felt happy there. I felt safe because I was not gonna be voted out. Not in my wildest fandom dreams could I think of something like this.

Jacob Derwin on Survivor: Ghost Island

SK: Being a Survivor superfan, is there any item on Ghost Island you wish you could've snatched and taken home?

JD: Some of those snuffers are freaking gorgeous. ... The Thailand one with the golden dragon, my God, dude. These are gorgeous! I would've love to have one of those [laughs], but there's a sign when you walk in that says like, "Don't touch anything."

SK: At Ghost Island you had to select one person to give the Secret Advantage. Why did you choose Morgan?

JD: I really thought about it for a long time. It kind of drove me crazy. I was torn between two people. It came down to Morgan and Desiree. I got a really good vibe from Desiree. I got a good vibe from her personality during pre-game. Everything about it appealed to me, and I thought we would get along really well. But then I thought, who on that tribe is the most middle-of-the-road? Who isn't sticking out too much, but also isn't invisible? Who's playing a good social game? Who's pretty athletic and showing their strength in challenges? Who do I think will actually be able to use this thing? That was Morgan. I had more confidence in Morgan going further than other people. She was middle-of-the-road enough, friendly enough and strong enough to pull it off. I did all the math in my head, and it seemed to make sense. I think it was a pretty good decision.

SK: How did you get on the show?

JD: I applied when I turned 18, and I kept applying. They [producers] started paying attention, and they started responding. I started bothering them more and more until I eventually worked my way in. It was a heck of an experience to get through that process. It's vigorous. I'm proud to call lots of cool people my friends who work on this show because they fought for me to get there. It means a lot. Sometimes just being a really enthusiastic person can get you into something interesting [laughs.]

Jacob Derwin on Survivor: Ghost Island

SK: So you've made friends for life with the cast?

JD: I'll say this. I'm happy that the episode has aired so I don't have to follow everybody on Instagram anymore [laughs.] I don't plan on keeping up with all these people, and I don't think a lot of these people plan on keeping up with me. That's OK. I definitely have a couple friends in the cast who I'm very happy to have like Laurel and James. Some on the other tribe reached out to me afterward like Kellyn and Desiree. They've been really wonderful. There's a lot of New Yorkers in this cast, so that's a really cool part of this to have these friends I shared this experience with. We don't all need to talk to each other. It's OK. We don't need a 20-person group chat. We'll be all right.

Tori Spelling's Alleged Breakdown May Have Been Caused by Overwhelming Stress

Updated story, March 1, 5:50 p.m. PT: New details have emerged mere hours after initial reports broke about Tori Spelling's alleged breakdown that resulted in two separate phone calls to police. One phone call happened late on the evening of Wednesday, February 28, while the second followed closely sometime in the early hours of Thursday morning.

While it wasn't originally clear why the police were called, we may now know the reasoning thanks to further investigation. According to Entertainment Tonight's ongoing coverage, a source claims that Spelling's alleged breakdown was caused by a variety of concerns related to her marriage, her children and her finances. "There are several things that led up to this, and she really couldn't take the pressure any longer,” the source reportedly told ET. "[Spelling] tries to be the best mom she can be, but with five children and terrible financial issues, her marriage has suffered tremendously."

A source claims that that initial phone call on Wednesday night, which was reported to be classified as a "female mental call" resulting in the police responding, may have happened after some stress or possibly a fight occurred between Spelling and her husband, Dean McDermott, and McDermott possibly leaving the residence for a couple of days before unexpectedly returning home.

"She had no idea he had walked in the door and it scared her," the source says. “She is obsessed with trying to make her relationship with Dean work despite all their issues. Her breakdown came after she and Dean had been fighting. She literally was hysterical and, sadly, the kids were home and everyone was scared. [...] She is under far too much pressure."

The source also claims Spelling has been "so overwhelmed" with the pressures of motherhood and raising her children, to the point that it may have kept her from getting out of the house. "She spent weeks at home alone with her family," the source claimed to ET. "She has not been active on her social media and also stopped talking to almost all her friends."

Spelling made headlines in 2016 after she was sued by American Express for $87,000 in credit card debt. Additionally, in late 2016, she was also sued by American Express for an unpaid bill of $38,000 plus and was also made to pay an additional $855 in court fees. She had apparently been borrowing money from her mother, Candy Spelling, in order to assist in these payments.

Neither Spelling nor her reps — nor anyone directly related to Spelling, as it happens — has released a statement at this time. Whatever the cause is for her distress, we can only hope the turmoil subsides quickly and that she, as well as her family, is able to find a safe and happy resolution to the concerns.

Original story, published March 1, 2:30 p.m. PT: Tori Spelling may or may not be going through something serious right now, and the reports emerging from multiple news outlets seem to indicate the former. There is one report in particular from a former contestant on The Bachelor (of all places) that implies there were warning signs of trouble with Spelling just before the calls were made.

More: Tori Spelling Put Makeup on Her 9-Year-Old & the Internet Isn't Having It

TMZ reports that on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 28, the police were called to the Spelling residence by Spelling because she believed that someone was breaking into her home; it was her husband, Dean McDermott. While TMZ's report has yet to be updated, we know that the police were called back to the Spelling home early on Thursday morning local time, although it's unclear at this time, as E! News' follow-up report notes, who called and why the police were called again, although TMZ speculates this could be linked back to what they're alleging is Spelling's breakdown. The police visits have now led to an investigation by authorities.

For the most part, there seems to be no immediately discernible reason there would be discord or cause for worry about Spelling's mental health or her well-being. However, there's a chance that something could be simmering just beneath the surface, if there is any truth to the comments popular Bachelor Nation personality Corinne Olympios (yes, the Corinne Olympios) made to Entertainment Tonight.

More: Tori Spelling Wants a 6th Kid, Because The Brady Bunch

During the daytime on Wednesday, Olympios recalls that she got to spend some one-on-one time with Spelling while the two were taking part in filming an episode of the yet-to-premiere Facebook cooking show Secrets in the Sauce. Olympios notes that the whole experience was surreal, mostly because she never thought she'd be hanging out with Spelling, but also because Spelling appeared a bit quiet, tired and withdrawn.

"This is the weirdest thing that's ever happened to me in my life," Olympios told ET. "The host of the show said [Tori] wanted to stay and hang out to meet me. We were kind of chatting, but she was kind of silent."

When it seemed like Spelling was tired, Olympios said, "I was thinking, 'Well, she does have five kids.' She was saying it's stressful, it's a lot. Someone was joking around with her like, 'Don't go home yet, say you're getting a manicure.' She was like, 'Oh my god, yeah right.'"

MoreWhy Can't We All Just Be Happy for Tori Spelling?

Perhaps the most troubling detail is that at one point, Spelling was given gifts for her kids from the show, and Olympios recalled, "[S]he kept dropping them [and] kept picking them up. [It was] like her mind was somewhere else." The police were called just hours after this incident.

Neither Spelling nor her reps have released a statement at this time. It's still unclear whether this is something truly worrisome or just a blip on the radar, so let's hope for the best where Spelling and her family are concerned.

Alec Baldwin Reacts to His Daughter’s Nude Photoshoot for PETA

Considering the fact that he's usually surrounded by children — his children, mind you — in his Instagram photos and they're under the age of 10, it's easy to forget that Alec Baldwin actually has a grown-up daughter who is out, movin' and groovin', through the world on her own. His eldest, Ireland Basinger Baldwin (from Baldwin's first marriage to actor Kim Basinger), has popped up on his Instagram feed once again, not only reminding us that yes, he has a daughter, but also that he has so major feelings about her latest modeling gig.

There's a new PETA campaign underway which means a slew of new celebrity portraits proclaiming their love of PETA and rejection of animal byproducts, like fur, are being put up on ads and posters to paper the world. One of those people is Ireland, who recently posted her photo from the series onto her Instagram. And then dear old dad, Baldwin himself, saw it and reacted...well, to be honest, he reacted better than you'd imagine most dads would react in this situation.

After retweeting Ireland's photo, Baldwin captioned the photo with a simple, succinct, "O...M...G...". Yeah, that says it all, doesn't it? I mean, we know Baldwin likes to have a good laugh every now and then and, coupled with the fact that he's always been supportive of Ireland's professional endeavors, it's no wonder he'd celebrate this one in the silliest ways he knows how.

Interestingly, Ireland's move to pose for PETA's Rather Go Naked campaign is something of a family tradition, with her mother having posed for an earlier PETA campaign in the '90s. On PETA's website, Ireland explained why she wanted to take part in this revealing photoshoot.

"I saw the images from when my mom shot this campaign, so it was something that I had aspired to do," she explained. "Since I was a little girl, I wanted to do something for PETA. This is something my mother has fought her entire life and has advocated for and something that I have tried to as well."

For his part, there are no reports coming out about Baldwin keeling over from a heart attack at seeing his daughter pose in her birthday suit for a good cause. Instead, it's actually really sweet to see Baldwin supporting his daughter, no matter how, uh, revealing the work may be.

What Is 'Inside-Out' Endometriosis?

The Uterus User's Guide

While getting your period is never really a picnic for people who menstruate, some have a little-known painful condition called adenomyosis that can make matters much worse. The good news is adenomyosis isn’t life-threatening. The bad news is it can cause heavy and lasting menstrual bleeding, intense bloating and abdominal pain and severe cramps. It sounds awful because it is. So, what is adenomyosis, and how does it differ from endometriosis?

What is adenomyosis?

According to Dr. Robert B. Albee Jr., founder emeritus of the Center for Endometriosis Care,  adenomyosis was once referred to as endometriosis interna, or in layman’s terms, "inside-out endometriosis." Similar enough to endometriosis that it is called a sister disease, adenomyosis is a condition that causes the endometrial tissue of the uterus cavity to grow into the uterus muscle, which damages the uterine wall. The difference is that with endometriosis, the endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, while with adenomyosis, it grows inside the uterus.

With adenomyosis, the displaced endometrial tissue continues to thicken, break down and then bleed out during each menstrual cycle, which could result in an enlarged uterus and painful, heavy periods.

More: If Nothing Works to Treat Your Period, Endometrial Ablation Could Be an Option

According to the Seckin Endometriosis Center, between 40 and 50 percent of patients with adenomyosis also have endometriosis, and 50 percent of people with adenomyosis also having fibroids at some point.

There are three different classifications of adenomyosis — focal, adenomyoma and diffuse. Focal adenomyosis is focused in only one area of the uterus. Adenomyoma is similar to focal in that it is focused, but has grown to the point of being a mass or benign tumor. Diffuse adenomyosis is when the endometrial tissue has spread throughout the uterus.

What causes it?

Adenomyosis isn’t yet a fully understood condition, and at present, doctors and researchers aren’t sure what even causes it. One theory, per the Mayo Clinic, is that the endometrial tissue has existed in the person's uterus since they were a fetus. Another theory proposes that stem cells from bone marrow could potentially make their way into the uterus and eventually become adenomyosis. It may also be caused by uterine inflammation related to childbirth. The Seckin Endometriosis Center also speculates that tissue trauma or any vaginal injury could potentially cause the condition.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of adenomyosis include:

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding or both
  • Dysmenorrhea, which are severe menstrual cramps
  • Menstrual cramps every day of your period
  • Cramps that worsen as you get older
  • Having blood clots while on your period
  • Pain during sex
  • Spotting between periods
  • Tenderness in your stomach
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Uncomfortable or burning urination or blood in the urine
  • Anemia
  • Decreased fertility
  • Increased miscarriage and preterm birth

Much of the time, people with adenomyosis don’t have any noticeable symptoms or believe their symptoms to be normal parts of menstruation. Dr. Tamer Seckin of the Seckin Endometriosis Center confirms this, saying that many girls are made to believe that pain during menstruation is normal.

"We need to do a better job of defining the difference between normal and abnormal," she explains. "It must be understood that pain is not normal. Chronic pain has a reason, a physical cause, and is valid.”

Many symptoms of adenomyosis are very similar to those of other conditions like fibroids, endometriosis and polyps, so it is very important to get checked out by your doctor. If your period is causing heavy bleeding and cramps that interfere with your daily life, seeing your doctor is a necessity because it could cause you to become anemic. Dealing with the pain and other symptoms can also lead to or exacerbate depression.

What are the risk factors associated with adenomyosis?

There have been certain factors that seem to increase the risk of getting adenomyosis, like previously giving birth or being middle-aged. Having a uterine surgery, like a C-section or getting fibroids removed, is also linked to increasing the likelihood of developing adenomyosis.

Typically, adenomyosis is a condition that goes away after menopause, so if nearing that age, a doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory medicine to help curb pain and the amount of bleeding during your period. Birth control is another option to help decrease symptoms. Birth control pills with estrogen and progestin and the patch often decrease bleeding and pain, while IUDs can cause periods to cease. Results with birth control vary, and sometimes take a bit of trial and error. A hysterectomy is another potential treatment, especially for people with worse cases and those still years away from menopause.

The bottom line is that if you are having heavy, painful periods, this may be another cause to be aware of and potentially bring up with your doctor.

Oh, the sweeping grandeur that is the Oscars. From the magical dresses to the pretty, shiny trophies, it is a spectacle we entertainment lovers anxiously await every year. But let's be real; we don't tune in to hear A-listers thank Steven Spielberg and their parents. We tune in for those unexpected moments when, overcome with emotions, we get a glimpse at a celebrity's heart... if they have one, that is.

And when it comes to Oscar tears, it's a tricky business because, well, they are actors. So are the tears genuine moments of heartfelt emotion? Or just acting tricks from the pros who know how to turn it on. We may never know.

Either way, the moments overcome with emotion have led to some pretty amazing GIFs and iconic moments movie history will never forget.

Check out all the noteworthy Oscar ugly cries below.

1. Gwyneth Paltrow in her Best Actress acceptance speech for Shakespeare in Love

Maybe the most notorious Oscar ugly cry, Paltrow couldn't contain herself after accepting her award for Best Actress for her performance in Shakespeare in Love, especially when she started talking about her family.

2. Octavia Spencer when she won Best Supporting Actress for The Help

"I'm sorry. I'm freaking out right now," Spencer said during her speech as she accepted her Oscar in 2012 for her performance in the then-heavily nominated film The Help. It was Spencer's first major win and that nomination preceded numerous nominations for her in the ensuing years (including her nomination this year for The Shape of Water). The tears were plentiful and the emotions were real as Spencer gave her thanks; it was hard not to get a little misty-eyed watching it all unfold!

3. Chris Pine crying while listening to Common and John Legend perform "Glory"

OK, so this one definitely wasn't an ugly cry. It was a gorgeous-Chris-Pine-single-tear-falling-down-his-chiseled-cheek cry. But that didn't stop it from becoming one of the most iconic Oscar cries of all time.

And Pine even told James Corden on the Late Late Show that he got a lot of crap for the tears.

"It was a wonderful performance, and it was really moving," Pine said, defending his reaction. "And a lot of people gave me a lot of crap for it — a single tear."

4. Sally Field when she won Best Actress for Places in the Heart

Field was nearly hysterical in her Best Actress acceptance speech in 1984. She infamously yelled, "You like me, right now, you like me," which has morphed over the years into the well-known phrase, "You like me, you really like me."

5. Halle Berry when she won Best Actress for Monster's Ball

Berry was so overcome with emotion she just cried and said, "Oh, my God," for a solid 30 seconds before beginning her speech by saying, "I'm sorry. This moment is so much bigger than me." She is the only black woman to have won the Best Actress award.

6. Charlize Theron in her Best Actress acceptance speech for Monster

Charlize Theron may have been nearly unrecognizable in her role in Monster, but she pulled a 180 when she showed up on the red carpet for the Oscars in 2004 looking absolutely stunning. Of course, that doesn't mean girlfriend doesn't know how to get her ugly cry on. After winning, she got up onstage and, just as confidently as she transformed for Monster, she let those tears free-fall.

7. Daniel Day-Lewis when he won Best Actor for Lincoln

Day-Lewis won his third academy award for Best Actor for his work as Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln, but that didn't mean it was any less meaningful. In fact, Day-Lewis struggled to keep it together as he said, "I really don't know how any of this happened. I do know that I have received so much more than my fair share of good fortune in my life."

People Living in California Supposedly Have the Lowest Quality of Life

Most people think of California as the state of Hollywood magic and dreams of "making it big," but according to a new study published in U.S. News & World Report, all might not be so sunny in the Golden State.

California was ranked the 32nd-best state overall, with Iowa coming in as the surprise No. 1 pick. But what really tanked California's score was the fact that it came in dead last in the "quality of life" category, which looks at two subcategories: social environment (community engagement, social support and voter participation) and natural environment (drinking water quality, low industrial toxins, low pollution health risk and urban air quality).

Unfortunately, it's not all glitz and glamor in the state — more like acid rain and pollution. California was ranked last when it came to urban air quality, a shameful designation also bestowed upon the state by the American Lung Association in 2017.

Undoubtedly the traffic problem has a lot to do with the air quality. The state's population continues to boom, and Los Angeles was ranked as having the worst traffic congestion in the world last year (for the sixth year in a row).

The state's infrastructure is also part of what sunk its place in the standings. High electricity prices, long commute times and poor road quality (probably because, as the most populous state in the nation, people are always on the roads) led to a dismal infrastructure ranking of No. 38. Income indicators were poor too — the cost of living, especially in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, is just too high for salaries to keep up.

But it's not all doom and gloom in the state. It has the fourth-best economy in the nation and is ranked No. 1 in public health, GDP growth and business environment. And there are some things you just can't quantify on a spreadsheet. The natural beauty around those of us who live in the state is stunning, with sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs meeting azure seas below, towering snowcapped mountains and striking desert vistas around every corner. The arts flourish in the state, and cultural exchange happens at a rapid-fire pace.

It's an exciting place to live, but hopefully legislators will pay attention to the apparent flaws highlighted by the report so the Golden State can finally ascend the podium to the place where it belongs.

Here's How 'Me Time' Can Improve Your Mood

Whether we're juggling multiple projects at work or simply trying to get dinner on the table, we all know what it's like to feel frazzled. According to the American Institute of Stress, more than three-quarters of Americans routinely experience physical symptoms as a result of their stress, everything from muscle tension to fatigue. In fact, many researchers say that taking time to relax and recharge is crucial for fighting the toxic effects of stress. Typically called “me time,” time spent relaxing rather than working on something for another person, can help reduce stress and improve overall health.

In a 2014 meta-analysis, researchers from Johns Hopkins University uncovered that taking time out from a busy day to meditate reduced participants' anxiety levels and even helped with pain management. Another 2011 study found that regular yoga practice — wherein a person takes time from their day to purposefully focus on the present moment, stretch and slow down breathing — helped improve anxiety, depression and general stress.

So, how exactly does “me time” help decrease your stress and anxiety? To understand this, we have to look at the body's nervous system, which is split into two parts: sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for kicking your heart rate into gear when things get stressful, and the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for lowering your heart rate to a normal level. Activities such as yoga and meditation activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing heart rate and generally flooding the body with feel-good chemicals.

Of course, what counts as “me time” looks different for everyone. For some, it means a quiet, mindful practice like yoga or meditation, but for others, it may be hiking, exercising, reading a book, playing video games or watching TV. Whatever your activity, researchers agree that anything that feels like a pleasure — rather than an obligation — is beneficial. And that's something we can all get behind.

This Type of Cosmetic Surgery Is on the Rise — & It's Not What You Think

Cosmetic procedures are still growing in popularity in the United States, but it may not be very obvious. Since 2000, the number of minimally invasive procedures has increased by 200 percent.

New data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons noted that 2017 saw a 2 percent overall increase in the number of procedures over the previous year. According to their findings, the top five cosmetic surgical procedures (out of nearly 1.8 million) were:

  1. Breast augmentation (300,378 procedures, up 3 percent from 2016)
  2. Liposuction  (246,354 procedures, up 5 percent from 2016)
  3. Nose reshaping (218,924 procedures, down 2 percent from 2016)
  4. Eyelid surgery (209,571 procedures, approximately the same as 2016)
  5. Tummy tuck (129,753 procedures, up 2 percent from 2016)

More: How Women in Comedy Are Destigmatizing Plastic Surgery

People were far more likely to opt for minimally invasive procedures in 2017, having 15.7 million performed over the course of the year. The top five were:

  1. Botulinum toxin (Botox) type A  (7.23 million procedures, up 2 percent from 2016)
  2. Soft tissue fillers  (2.69 million procedures, up 3 percent from 2016)
  3. Chemical peel  (1.37 million procedures, up 1 percent since 2016)
  4. Laser hair removal  (1.1 million procedures, down 2 percent from 2016)
  5. Microdermabrasion  (740,287 procedures, down 4 percent from 2016)

Minimally invasive procedures may appeal to some because they are less drastic than some traditional plastic surgery and work with your body's natural features. One of the fastest-growing categories within minimally invasive procedures are those that aim to eliminate fat and tighten the skin, with treatments for cellulite alone increasing by nearly 20 percent since 2016.

“Unwanted fat is something that affects so many Americans,” ASPS President Dr. Jeffrey E. Janis said in a statement. “Plastic surgeons are able to give patients more options than ever before for fat elimination or redistribution. Patients appreciate having options, especially if they can act as maintenance steps while they decide if getting something more extensive down the line will be right for them.”

Another popular procedure in 2017 was the breast reduction, which saw an 11 percent spike in 2017 over the previous year. This surgery involves removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to make a person's breasts more proportional with the rest of their body and reduce back pain associated with large breasts.

MoreNo One Should Shame Women About Having Plastic Surgery — Including the President

“Breast reductions are consistently reported as one of the highest patient-satisfaction procedures because it positively affects a woman’s quality of life. It addresses both functional and aesthetic concerns,” said Janis.

It should go without saying that cosmetic procedures — whether surgical or minimally invasive — are not necessarily appealing to everyone, and you should talk with your doctor if you're interested in having one. And if it is something you're interested in, that's fine too. Basically, let's all try to be happy and healthy and not judge other people for their decisions or appearance — sound good?
